SPJST Insurance Goals The future growth of the SPJST depends directly on the success of our volunteer sales force's production.

The SPJST means many things to all of us. To many members, it is the primary source of social activity (youth club, dances, bingo, civic projects, heritage and cultural event, etc.). Due to the fact that our Society has so many important facets, we become so involved in a specific area that we forget the prime reason our Society was founded in 1897. This reason being to furnish a financial blanket of protection for those who are members. Translated, this means the SPJST is a Fraternal Benefit Society chartered to furnish its

membership, Texas State Board of Insurance approved coverages of life insurance.

All programs within the SPJST need funding to exist. The basis of these funds is the insurance premiums we collect. The more insurance sold, the more funds available for us to expend on approved projects. The point of this message is that every member of the SPJST, no matter what your primary interest may be within our Society, should be concerned with its insurance sales and growth because it affects YOU. At our recent convention in Corpus Christi, TX, it was voted unanimously by the delegates to reward the lodges that meet sales

goals established by our By-Laws.

Those lodges that grow at a very nominal pace will be allowed to send more delegates than those that do not grow.. It was agreed by the delegates that the lodges that are helping the SPJST prosper should receive more acknowledgment of their achievement than those who are not growing or, in some cases, declining.

Within the next month, Jerry M. Mikulas, Jr., SL Financial Secretary, will be sending each lodge president a letter informing them of the goals established by the delegates of the XXIVth SPJST Convention. It will then be the job of every member of that lodge to assist the sales representatives to attain that goal. We

hope everyone will work hard to reach these goals because we all stand to gain from it.

Once again, I want you to know the Insurance Department will do anything and everything we can to help you grow. We want the local lodge to give us input in any way they feel we can be of any further assistance. Everyone here at the Home Office is dedicated to make the SPJST the ultimate in Fraternal Benefit Societies. With all of us pulling together, I look for even greater successes in the future.

President Vanicek appointed a new Audit Committee; namely, Nancy Posvar, Barbara Macek and Shirley Waits.

The Child Abuse Program is in progress, please bring your items to the next meeting.

Henry and Willie Mae Vanicek are in charge of the kitchen for September; if anyone is interested in helping them, please let them know.

Welcome to our new members Kenneth and Pauline Marek and Shelia Altum.

Congratulations to Raymond and Doris Coots at the birth of their new baby girl, Lori Elizabeth; Raymond is the bar chairman.

Birthday celebrants for August were Keith Mikeska, Clayton Cabla, Milton Zavodny, Juanita Cabla, Ray Coots, Willie Mae Vanicek and Joe Sebek. Happy Birthday to all of you, also happy anniversary to Kenneth and Pauline Marek.

Expression of Sympathy is extended to the John Zabcik family.

Mr. Zabcik died a few weeks ago. I understand he was 95 years old and this year he would have outlived his SPJST insurance policy.

The SPJST Lodge 29 at Taylor held their regular monthly meeting Sunday, August 12 at 4 p.m.

Mark Steger, representing the youth club, presented the flag and led the members in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing for a few moments of silence for our deceased members Sister Marie Mikolaj and Sister Rosie Goerig.

40 August Meeting Lodge

Dear Vestnik Readers and Friends, President James Kulcak called the August meeting of the El Campo-Hillje Lodge 40 to order, August 22 at 7:45 p.m. The usual meeting date was cancelled; the new addition was about completed and financial matters needed to be decided closer to that time.

Following the Pledge of Allegiance, a minute of silent prayer for our departed member was observed.

Secretary Laverne Bacak called the roll of officers; youth leader was absent.

Motion was made and seconded to accept the minutes of the last meeting as written in the Vestnik.

Motion carried.

Treasurer Leona Macha reported on all bank accounts and all bills paid. We are financially sound.

Financial Secretary Bill Goerig gave the names of new applicants; namely, James L. Shelton, Cindy Gonzales, and Natalie Bubela.

Welcome to our lodge.

President Kulcak gave information on the insurance rider for the new addition. He also discussed a survey on liability to be filled out from the home office. It deals with the possibility of a blanket policy covering all lodges.

Presently we are well covered on our own.

There was a discussion about the smoke eliminators that were to be installed; it seems there was some problem, so another method is being looked into. One of the possibilities was to rent eliminators monthly.

Brother Benny Reck is looking into timer operated vents to cut costs.

Cost of the 51/2 ton air conditioner wasn't included in the original bid on the building, estimated cost of building should be less than the full amount voted on originally. There will be an additional lighting cost.

Land next to the hall is to be purchased immediately out of savings. There was a discussion about installing sodium lights and enlarging the parking lot as soon as the hall is finished.

It's important to thank the people working Monday night bingo, because without them we would not have been about to make the land purchase immediately. Thanks go to Ernest Opello, Benny Reck, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Kresta, Sr., James and Margie Kulcak, Frankie and Rita Vanek, Dora Lee and Dutch Kopecky and Frank Krauskopf.

They are all working every week to make our lodge a success.

The meeting adjourned. The next meeting is Sept. 19th. If you haven't had a chance to see the new addition, come by and look at it. They've done a great job.

Flash From Lodge Pokrok Dallas No. 84

News

Our annual Czech Fest is coming up in the near future, so we want all to start preparing now. It is set for September 16th. In fact the entire weekend will have a lot of activity, a dance with music by the Czech Harvesters will be held Saturday, September 15th. This will set the festive mood for all.

Sunday, following this dance, we will start with a Czech dinner and tons of entertainment all day.

We will, have many booths, so we do need everyone's help by donations toward them or by working or both; anything and everything will be appreciated, once again.

I have volunteered to work the gift booth, so I am counting on our members to repeat the wonderful support as you have in all the past years.

A free dance is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. with The Blazek's Band playing. Everyone is invited.

The SPJST Lodge 135 in Ennis will be hosting their t•inual dinner Sunday, September 9th at 12:30 p.m., at the Sokol Gymnastic Center.

Members are asked to bring a covered dish or pastry. Smoked turkey will be furnished by the lodge.

There will be a door prize, cake walk, and a drawing. The proceeds will benefit the Ellis County Foster Parent Association Child Abuse Program.

We had a very good turnout at our last meeting at the interesting unique home of Dr. Svatava Jakubson in the hills. Those of you who were unable to attend missed an enjoyable get-together.

The charming hostess, Dr. Jakubson, served barbecue brisket, potato salad and coffee. Members brought covered dishes of baked beans, combination salad, pea and green bean salad, casseroles, etc. as well as many delicious desserts and cool drinks. Because of the heat, we

We also congratulate Linda and Leonard Johnson on the arrival of a baby girl after two boys. Lindsey Ann will also become our member.

Things will be different in that household. No doubt Mrs. Rose Urban is a very proud grandmother.

We hope to have you, Rose, come to our meeting sometime also, when you are visiting Linda and family.

It may be interesting to some of you readers that at our Czech Aqua Fest during the Austin Aqua Festival, Kathy Turner, of Czech descent, our TV Channel 36 weather reporter surprised us in the Czech Heritage booth and asked some of us to be on a live show on the grounds of Auditorium Shores, near a Czech band stand. I dressed her up in part of a Czech Kyjovsky kroj costume and the four of us were in other respective Czech costumes. Kathy gave a short weather report in Czech. Ed Havelka spoke only in Czech. Georgia Chamberlain displayed a pair of costumed Czech dolls.

Kitchen Chairperson Othen Jezek reported $2,000 was added to the special account from the kitchen.

Larry Bland reported $200 was added to the first place account from the Bingo Fund as it is every month.

Youth Leader Bruce Tomastik gave the youth report in the absence of Ann Tomastik. There were 14 members present.

Libbie Bartek reported she had sent sympathy cards to Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Tschoerner, and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Justin. Get well cards were sent to Harvey Williard, Will Tyroch, and Vernie May. We hope all of these will have a speedy recovery.

No notes were taken at the called Board of Trustees' meeting. Wilbert Ramm is back in the hospital and the lodge also wishes him a speedy recovery.

Old business, which was much discussed, was brought forth about members voting and when the members vote can be overruled by Sept. the trustees. At our benefit for the Child Abuse & Neglect Benefit held August 5th, we collected $5,618 and I would like to see someone or other organization top this. We, in Pasadena (at Lodge 172), are not that big, but we do things in a big way. Many thanks to all the helpers who put this on.

Genealogy Workshop For Czech Families In The West Community

Persons of Czech descent living in West and surrounding communities are invited to participate in a Genealogy workshop to be presented on Sunday, September 30, 1984, one to five p.m. at the West Community Center. Those of you who are interested in tracing the origin of your family and or developing a family tree will get helpful information on sources you will need for your research.

Janak Family Reunion Largest Ever in Texas

"Fantasy becomes reality," said Joe Janak, one of the estimated 1,500 Janak descendants who attended the family's reunion held recently in Hallettsville.

"It first began with visualized dreams, then an ultimate goal," said Janak, It was a matter of "planning, coordinating and working with relatives, descendants of the six Janak brothers, sons of Ondrej and Rosalie Janak from Czechoslovakia, who immigrated to America from 1873-1891."

For the first time in 111 years, the descendants of Ondrej and Rosalie Janak, including Frank, John, Mikulas, Vinc, Ondrej, Jr. and Ignac, gathered for a family reunion June 10 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Hallettsville.

"It was a spectacular sight to behold as over 1,500 relatives came to mingle, reminisce, Worship, visit and enjoy," Janak said.

The day's events began with registration and a Mass celebrated

by Monsignor Hubert Janak, a grandson of Frank Janak.

The Slavic Folk Liturgy was sung in Czech and English by a group from Houston, which included Janak relatives. Leonard Kulhanek led the singing, which was accompanied by an accordian, trumpet and other instruments. A catered Czech meal was served. Of course, it featured

Following the meal, a brief meeting and program were conducted.

Special guests of Mr. and Mrs. Leo G. Janak at the reunion included Mr. and Mrs. Ferdinand Maralik of Ticha, Czechoslovakia. The Maraliks are descendants of Joseph Janak, a brother to the six Janak brothers who came to America. Since the Maraliks attended, the reunion actually united seven brothers, all descendants of the original couple.

Other distinguished guests included the only three living descendants of Ignac Janak. They included. Henry Janak of Mathis, Walter Janak, of Hitchcock and Rosie Janak Steffik of Lovelady.

Congressman Bill Patman telephoned his regrets and stated, "This is indeed a historic event." He also stated that he will send a U.S. flag to the descendants to be passed on from reunion to reunion in celebration of the family's history.

Channel 13 in Houston taped a story on the reunion and the establishment of the Janak family near Hallettsville. Coverage of the reunion was also carried on Victoria's Channel 25.

It took nearly a year to plan the reunion, according to Joe Janak.

Family displays representing the families of each of the six brothers were set up. Nearly 100 artifacts were displayed, including a 226year-old prayer book.

6/VESTNiK—Wednesday, September 5, 1984 ville, 87, was the oldest family member present. She is a descendant of the John Janak family. The youngest present was Travis Wayne Janak, nine-day-old son of Joseph and Carol Janak of Victoria. Joseph Janak is a descendant of the Frank Janak family and his wife is a descendant of John Janak.

Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Schneider of Hallettsville, descendants of Vinc Janak, claimed the longest marriage. Mr. and Mrs. Michael Viet, who had been married one week at the time of the reunion, took honors for the most recent marriage. They are descendants of the John Janak family. Mr. and Mrs. Maralik of Czechoslovakia and Sylvia Scott of Caracus, Venezuela, traveled the greatest distances.

Panoramic pictures of each family group and of the entire group were, taken by Goldbeck and Company of San Antonio. A cake, which measured almost 10 feet square was baked and donated by Mr. and Mrs. Victor Michna, who own Barbara's Bakery in Rosanky. The cake featured a six-pointed star. Each point represented one of the brothers. Janak's Nursery donated ornamental plants.

Individual family chairmen included Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Janak for Frank Janak; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Janak for John Janak; Mrs. John Matula for Mikulas Janak; Mrs. Johnnie Micek for Vinc Janak and Mrs. Victor Boehm for Ignac Janak.

There are no descendants from Ondrej Janak Jr. because he drowned and never married.

Joseph D. Janak Jr. served as the overall reunion chairman.

Prior to the reunion, 200 booklets on the family's history were printed.

The copies were sold out within two hours.

Copies of the family tree showing the relationship of the nearly 4,000 members of the Janak family were sold and are still available from Joseph D. Janak Jr. in Victoria, 5723804.

The family tree consisting of nearly 4,000 names was compiled and produced by Joseph Janak Jr. who was assisted by other family members. The project required five years to complete. The final typing alone took two months.

"I guessed that there were approximately 2,000 family members," Janak said, "but when I eounted them, there were closer to 4,000." The finished family tree measures 37 x 50 inched and there are so many family members represented that the type is truly of the "fine print" variety.

It is hoped that, as a result of this reunion, each of the five families with living descendants will hold their own individual family reunion next year. The families of Frank and John Janak have been doing this for many years. The Frank Janak family has been doing it for 26 years consecutively.

"I think our reunion has inspired many other families to trace their genealogy," Joe Janak said. He has received numerous calls asking genealogical advice. "Some were from Janaks and some were not," he said. Although he does not do genealogical research for other families, he will share what techniques he has learned in tracing his own family's history.

There is good reason to speculate that the Janak family reunion may be the largest ever held in the state of Texas.

Our purpose is to preserve, maintain, and promote the customs, language, heritage, and social relationship of the American people of Czech descent.

Our program tentatively includes two Czech bands, the Leo Majek Band during the day and the Leroy Matocha Orchestra for the evening dance.

Entertainment will be provided by the Czech Heritage Society Singers, the.

Corpus Christi Sokol . Gymnastics, the Houston Czech Concert Band and their Choral Group, the San Antonio Singers, Victoria Singers and Czech Dancers, also view authentic Czech costumes in the parade of costumes to highlight the evening dance.

Booths are being made available to display examples of Slavic foods, crafts, art, clothing and music. Booths may simply be of a cultural nature or act as a fund raiser for your organization.

The seventh annual reunion of the Ondrej and Marianna Stavinoha descendants was held Sunday, August 12, 1984 at the American Legion Hall in Shiner, Texas.

The hall opened at 10 a.m. with registration, family history display, taped Czech music, dominoes were available for playing.

Zavodny-Persky Wedding Abbeye Gay Persky became the bride of Jodie Lyn Zavodny Saturday, August 18, 1984 at 2 p.m. at Hope Lutheran Church in Buckholts, Texas.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William A. "Bob" Persky of Rogers. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Leon G. Zavodny, Sr. of Rogers.

The Rev. Douglas A. Stolleis of Temple officiated at the double ring ceremony. Music was by Becky Roessler of Seaton, pianist and organist, and Margaret Nauman of Bay City, soloist. Guests were registered by Lisa Bruggman of Cyclone.

Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore an A-line organza gown fashioned with a molded empire bodice with pearl encrusted venise lace, Queen Anne neckline, and bishop sleeves ending in wide cuffs. The full skirt of organza was encircled in and had motifs of venise lace. To complete her ensemble, she wore a fingertip veil of crystal sprinkled illusion held in place by an

open-crown juliet cap of crystals and silk flowers. She carried a cascade of white roses, royal blue gypsophelia, cornflowers and baby's breath.

Maid of honor was Jane Fuchs of Rogers. Matron of Honor was Kim Cranford of Waukegan, Illinois.

Bridesmaids were Sherry Vrazel, Anna Skrhak, Sharon Pick, Elaine Zavodny and Theresa Zavodny.

Flower girls were Addie Nauman of Bay City and Sarah Zavodny of Buckholts.

Best man was Leon G. Zavodny, Jr., brother of the groom. Groomsmen were Michael Merka, Chris Sebek, Elden Zavodny, Tommy Merka, Randy Miller and Craig Green.

Local Youth Is Olympic Winner

Milani County is home for what is probably the best kept secret of the 1984 Olympics — the National Deaf Olympics, that is.

Mil= County gained a double medalist at the 5th National Track and Field events June 26-30 in Austin, called the United States Committee World Games For The Deaf. That medalist is Jeff Beckhusen of Buckholts.

At 6-feet one-inch and 230 pounds, Beckhusen is a natural athlete who doesn't let his 'handicap' (85 percent deafness since birth) interfere with his goals. Beckhusen won the silver medal in the Men's Javelin Throw, a bronze in the Men's Discus Throw and placed sixth in the Shot Put. For Jeff, it was simply a matter of putting his mind to it. Alarmed, Stibal assisted the aged man to the wagon. Kosina had a sad look in his eyes and asked his friend if he could spend the night with William and his family. He also asked if they would make some Czech food like knedliky (dumplings) and also some warm old-country soup (polevka), for him.

Further questioning by Mr. Stibal as to why the elderly man would be walking in a bad storm, prompted the response by Mr. Kosina, who had no family, that he expected to die the next day. He further stated, without a change in voice or expression, that this being the case he had not wished to die alone.

Furthermore, since he was going to die, he would like to have a meal of warm, Czech food with his people.

He also explained to the startled Stibal that the bundle he was carrying contained his few personal effects and a change of clothes.

Despite pleas by Mr. and Mrs. Stibal, after their dinner which featured the requested knedliky and polevka, Kosina remained adament that death was near. From all appearances, however, his mind and body, gave no trace of illness. Their conversation was of many topics.

The storm raged all night and Mr. Stibal awoke early the next morning to find that John Kosina, true to his word, had died in his sleep.

One of the first burials, 1899 was Mrs. Bertha Zabransky, wife of the jeweler, who died at childbirth.

Mr. Vystercil Sr., Mr. Stibal Sr. and Andrew Tomchak were early trustees of the school district.

Laudy Tomchak, a son of Andrew, also served on the county school board. Early mayors were Lewis and Ed Ledvina, sons of Joseph.

Lewis was also postmaster while Ed and a bro.-in-law, Paul Bartunek, had local businesses. Mrs. Carrie Hynek Freauf ran the phone exchange.

Fred Vystercil, Ed Ledvina and Jim Pospesil were active in the Market Lake Band, music and dance being favorite activities of the Czech people. Mr. Dostal represented the community in the Spanish-American war, while Frank Vopat was among the many who served in World War I. William and Adrian Lapacek were killed in World War II. One who had considerable rapport with his countrymen was Wm. Stibal Sr. Able to speak Czech and German as well as English, his store was a favorite of the settlers, who were often taken advantage of by others due to their lack of English. Stibal, who had been an employee of Mr. Patrie, filled the void somewhat, when Patrie's sudden death, caused a halt to plans for further Czech and German homesteaders.

The Czechs of Market Lake lived up to Martin Patrie's description of them as being honest and hard working and the ideal kind of citizen for the new state of Idaho. ***

Beseda Group Resume

Beseda Dancers from Lovelady, Lodge 74.

The SPJST Lodge 74 Youth Club of Lovelady has had a Beseda dance group for 2 years now. Their Youth Leader Linda Michka teaches the danceft.

She first received help on learning the edited version of the dance from the Supreme Lodge (SPJST) who furnished a record and written instructions.

Further assistance came from Bessie Petr, youth counselor of SPJST District III. At the Youth Leaders' Retreat in 1983 at Camp Val Verde, she and her husband, Emil, taught the group this dance; from this help, Linda was able to teach her group the basic steps.

They (the dancers) are very grateful for this help in getting them started who do the best they can, however, they are always ready for improvements and/or corrections.

(It would be good gesture for the SPJST Supreme Lodge to sponsor a Statewide Seminar in "Beseda" instructions. This would help the participants plus many others to learn this dance which would help those from different areas to

perform the the dance in a similar manner.)

Assistance on designing the dancers' costumes came from Bessie Petr of Dallas and Maxine Sefcik from West; both graciously shared their knowledge on appropriate colors and designs to use. Additional help came from the dancers' mother lodge (Lodge No. 74) that helps with the money-making projects to raise money for the costumes and mothers went to work measuring and sewing. The ladies who were involved in reproducing the dancers' costumes were Linda Michka, Billie Listiak, Sherry McKenney, Donna Roberts, and Nancy West.

The new dancers added this year include Karen Conarroe, Darrell Jones, Scott McKenney, and Craig Stone.

Folk Costumes In Czechoslovakia

The culture of the nations of Czechs and Slovaks developed to a great extent in the period of National Revival, when the difference between the arts represented by common people and by higher social classes disappeared.

The talent of ordinary women and men in the country made a special imprint on the culture and particularly the creative arts of that period. This was seen for instance in painted wood-cut, places of painted furniture, pottery, ceramics and folk architecture. The poetry of shapes and colors of folk costumes, which were used everyday and on festival occasions was formed in a special way.

A folk costume consists in many parts, each being made of various materials, and with varied decorative patterns. The oldest types of costumes were made of such materials, as flex-linen, hemplinen and woolen cloth, and their colorful ornamentation and patterns were rather sporadic. A remarkable material for costumes was also kanafas, a checked or striped cotton cloth, canvas, which was worn by girls and women. Throughout Bohemia and Moravia weavers produced hundreds of various patterns. Also blueprint was frequently used as a material for costumes in Bohemia and Slovakia.

Canvas and blueprint, as the traditional designs, are used still today in original and new forms.

It was, however, embroidery and lace that were the real works of the creative arts. Embroiderers and lace-makers used to work for feudal lords and the Church, and when the oppression of people became weaker, after the abolition of corvee, the most beautiful embroideries and lace appeared as part of a folk costume. There were many different folk costumes in various regions and districts. The original white and red, yellowish or black combinations of basic types of patterns developed in a wide choice and variety of colors and shapes of the embroideries and lace.

New methods of production and new cuts of clothes were also made use of. New rare pieces of fashion filled wardrobes. Women's costumes differed to a great extent, as far as the length of skirts, the height of waist, head-dress, the cut of shirts and waistcoat, stockings, shoes, the height of the heel of shoes, the color, shape and kind of embroidery are concerned. Men's costumes were not so varied, but they also differed in the width and length of trousers, their material, quality and color (trousers, made of black and yellow deerskin, trouser-legs made of coarse or smooth cloth), in the width and length of shirt's sleeves, the cuts of waistcoat, jacket and furcoat, and very often in the shape of a hat. The reliable way of telling a difference in various kinds of costumes has always been the type of embroidery on the collar, breast, waist and trouser-legs, or a decoration on a fur-coat.

Before 1850 there were 17 areas in Bohemia and more than 40 districts in Moravia where people wore folk costumes. In the borderland between Moravia and Slovakia, called Moravian Slovakia, there

were 27 such districts at the beginning of the 20th century. In Slovakia, which was formerly divided into 16 administrative units, there were old types of folk costumes at the end of the 19th century, particularly in central Slovakia (Zvolen, Liptov and west Slovak Kopanice), but also extraordinary costumes composition were to be found there, too (Luzna, Myjava and Polomka).

Folk costumes were different to a great extent, which depended not only on the districts of origin, but also on purposes for which they were used. A white-robed bride from the region of Detva becomes a woman with a black apron and a bonnet after her marriage.

The costume of Blata (region) which survived in south Bohemia until the nineties of last century, made it possible for older women to have a dignified appearance, after they had put on large kerchiefs with rich embroideries. The costume from the nearby district of Tabor called the Cossack's costume, like the costume of people living in the region of Policka, have a classical and modester composition. Of very colorful patterns are the MoravianSlovak costumes of people living in the districts of Vlcnov and Kunovice. Both types differ in sleeves of shirts, their embroideries and lace. Children also wore national costumes; first they had on shimmies, but later when going to school, they wore various folk costumes. Children singing carols in Bohemia, young girls, also called little queens from the district of Hana in Moravia, then Wallachian shepherds as well as youths from the areas of Detva in Slovakia, all of them had characteristic folk costumes.

In Bohemia and western Moravia people stopped wearing folk costumes in the second half of the 19th century, whereas in eastern Moravia and Slovakia folk costumes became old-fashioned only after World War One. But even today we can still admire the beauty of folk costumes on special festive occasions, such as festivities held regularly in the month of May, harvest-home, some public holidays, etc. Also in Bohemia if we want to see the originals of some folk costumes, we must go to museums, but in Moravia and Slovakia it is possible to visit here and there an old-wedding or feast to see people in their old national costume.

Nationwide and international folklore festivals, held every year at Straznice, Vychodna, Detva, Bratislava, Strakonice, Kromeriz, Velka nad Velickou, Tvrdonice, Roznov pod Radhostem and other places throughout Czechoslovakia are every year a parade of poetic beauty of folk costume, which is admired not only by Czechoslovak people but also by foreigners.

Houston International Folk Dancers Primarily a recreational group, HIFD has been active in Houston for over two decades. The group dances every week for fun and friendship.

Workshops are sponsored regularly to introduce new dances and to further improve their styling of the

old favorites. Most recently, Hungarian, Polish, Balkan, and Yugoslavian instructors have been presented. Accompanying the pure enjoyment of dance is a commitment to preserve folk dance culture including authentic music and costumes.

HIFD has over fifty active members, many of whom enjoy performing. The Romanian Ensemble is an outgrowth of that interest. They have had the honor of performing at the Houston Festival, The San Antonio College Folk Dance Festival, SPJST Lodge No. 88, and the Texas Folklife Festival over the past few years. As you will see, they also strive to reproduce authentic folk costumes. Much time and effort went into the costumes we wear, which are from Transylvania in central Romania. Many of the blouses were cross-stitched by hand.

The beads on the men's hats are favors from the ladies.

The dynamics of the dances you will see presented are very distinctive. They are mainly energetic, lively, and set to a vivid tempo. The mood is lyrical, but the coloring is cheerful, bright, outspoken, and intense. The dances are for the most part fast; however, they also include examples in a more moderate tempo.

This year was the HIFD group's first appearance at the annual 8th Westfest during the first weekend (Labor Day) in September. ***

Polish Folk Dancers of San Antonio The Polish Folk Dancers were organized in 1972 at San Antonio by members of Polish descent who were interested in preserving their culture.

Mrs. Jo Ann Witek had been director of the group since the beginning. John Singleton is their present instructor.

There were 4 couples in the group at the start and there are now 18 members in the group.

The group performs in San Antonio and throughout the state.

Their first performance was at the San Antonio Folklife Festival in 1972 and they have performed at all the festivals since then.

To name a few places where they have performed include New Braunfels' Wurstfests, Grand Prairie Oktoberfests, El Paso Border Folk Festival and Fort Worth Ocktoberfests.

They have also performed at a State Postmasters' Convention, State Teachers' Convention, National Travelers' Convention, American Business & Men's Convention and International Military Ball in San Antonio, PolishAmerican Congress Conventions in Houston, Austin and San Antonio.

They escorted the Queen and , her Court at the Coronation of the Queen of the Alamo in San Antonio.

They perform at military balls, church, civic and ethnic functions, schools, universities, hospitals and military installations.

The group is comprised of natives and descendants of Poland, Czechoslovakia, Germany and the United States. There are 60 dances in their repertoire representing

various regions of Poland. They perform in 3 costumes representing different regions of Poland.

The group has been complimented for their beautiful costumes and music with their fast and intricate movements. In 1977, when the group performed at the El Paso Border Festival, the members of the Polish National Alliance Lodge at El Paso were so impressed by the San Antonio dances, that they organized a Polish Folk Dance group.

Although the group is non-profit, they are supported only by donations which helps maintain and replace their costumes, also sound equipment plus transportation which is so expensive, therefore donations are always appreciated to the group's expense fund. ***

Norwegian Society Of Texas Leikarringen (means: Play ring) The dance organization a dimension of the total society's endeavors began in 1976 with only twelve people and has expanded to over 50, plus 20 children — called Barne/(children) ringen (children's ring).

There are dancers from Amarillo, El Paso, Dallas, -Ft. Worth, Arlington who join together 3 times a year: Texas Folklife Festival (participant 8 years), State Fair of Texas in Dallas on Norway Day and for a workshop once-a-year at various chapter locations in the State. (Tryouts for Texas Folklife Festival are held at this time.)

The highlight of its dancing experience has been the opportunity to dance for King Olav the fifth, present reigning monarch of Norway, at a celebration dedicated to the 200th year of Norwegian migrations to America; the leader, Cleng Peerson, is buried in Bosque County in Norse, Texas (near Waco) this event took place October 1982.

A letter was received (from King Olav) by their Consul General Metune who, in turn, shared with the dancers that the most satisfying occasion spent in Texas for this event was held in Dallas at the State Fair, when the dancers performed the original Norwegian dances that he was accustomed to in Oslo.

-Carla Sanborn Jones, co-ordinator of the chapters of Leikarringen for State of Texas and vice principal in the Irving Independent School District, advised that the group "loves" the Westfest. ***

Rathkamp German Dancers A group of Houstonians got together and organized a dance club in 1959 and for nearly twenty-five years, the family dance club, which is composed of a German family, has accomplished their dream.

Within its affiliation the dancers retain their regular dance rehearsals for public participation.

Since their organization began, the dancers performed at various statewide festivals; namely, Texas Folklife (San Antonio), Wurstfest (New Braunfels), Astroworld, Westfest, and for 6 weeks every

On another occasion, held at the Hyatt Regency in Houston, held September 24, 1983, an anniversary (300 years) celebration was held in honor of all theGermans in America.

Monroe Rathkamp, a dance instructor, teaches German folk dancing in 10 high schools within Houston and neighboring vicinity.

From these schools the best student dancers are selected to compete at TAGS (Texas Association German Students) level for the most outstanding honors. It is also interesting to know that in 1982, there were five top students from Mr. Rathkamp's class selected to go to State level.

Mr. Rathkamp's spouse, Betty, who is a very strong supporter of the group, advised me that she worked with Young Audience Concerts presenting German music and dance to Houston and surrounding area students because the German language students learn the cultural aspects of the language they are studying, and it also makes more fun and gives them a better understanding of the people. ***

Alamo Cloggers Resume "CLOGGING BEATS JOGGING" - say the Alamo Cloggers of San Antonio, Texas. Clog dancing is an authentic American Folk Dance that according to researchers, apparently originated by combining folk dance movements performed by the immigrants who settled in the Appalachian Mountains of Northeastern United States.

Several styles of clog dancing from various parts of the Appalachian region seem to be related in different degrees to dances from Ireland, England, Germany, France, the Netherlands and Africa.

Clogging is a vigorous exuberant fun dance done with fancy footwork executed flatfooted with a variety of backward chugs, stomps and forward slides. The rhythm for dancing done at the pioneer "play parties" and harvest gatherings or barn raisings was set by clapping the hands and stomping the feet. It seems only natural that the clog dance emphasizes the bass beat of the music now with heel sounds or stomps. Significant differences in the clog dance can be found from one mountainside to another. Depending upon the origin of the pioneer settlers.

Alamo Cloggers dance team was organized in the 1970's in San Antonio by Deloris Breske. She learned this unique dance in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina from a mountain boy named "Bill Nichols." Mrs. Breske brought clogging to San Antonio and organized the first clogging team in San Antonio. Alamo Cloggers is the first team in the state of Texas to emphasize and perform "mountain style" clogging. Mrs. Breske has conducted clogging workshops in New Mexico, Lehigh Acres Resort in Florida, and in San Marcos, Blanco and Victoria, Tx., also was a panelist at the Clogging Seminar at the Texas State Festival, Dallas.

Funeral Services for Brother. Fojt were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 27 at the Memorial Chapel, with Reverend Henry Stovall officiating.

Burial followed in the Good Hope Cemetery at William Penn, in Washington County.

ZABCIK, age 95, who passed away August 1, 1984, in a Temple nursing home.

Mr. Zabcik was born in Washington County. He had been a resident of Bell County for the past 94 years. Prior to his retirement, he was engaged in farming and ranching in the Red Ranger Community area. He was a member of Ocker Brethren Church.

Mr. Zabcik is survived by two sons, Edwin Zabcik of Corsicana, and Clarence John Zabcik- of Houston; one sister, Mrs. Charlie Tomasek of Zabcikville; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. August 3, at the Ocker Brethren Church with the Rev. James Parks officiating. Burial was in the Ocker Cemetery. HarperTalasek Funeral Home of Temple was in charge of arrangements.

He was born August 25, 1921 in Fayetteville, Texas and passed away in Conroe, Texas, August 8, 1984.

Items of Interest The 44th annual Czech Day at the Texas State Fair in Dallas will take place at the State Fair grounds Sunday, October 7th.

Arrangements have been made to have a Mass in Czech language in the auditorium of the Hall of State Building beginning at 8:30 a.m. with the Very Rev. Msgr. George Tydlacka officiating (unless His Excellency Bishop John Morkovsky, bishop of the Galveston-Houston Diocese will be available); Bishop Thomas Tschoepe of Dallas has also been invited to attend. Amos Pavlik, president of State KJT, will be the Lector. The Catholic Czech Club singers under the direction of Bob Liska will provide singing.

There will be seminarians from the Dallas Holy Trinity, and altar boys.

The Czech Day program, at the Band Shell, will start at 10 a.m.

There will be national anthems sung in English/Czech/Slovak by Helen

(Milberger) Sampson, with the accompaniment by Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra under the direction of Cyril Pokladnik.

In addition there will be some musical numbers, some Czech singing and dancing by children and adults.

A gymnastic exhibition by the Southern District Sokol gymnasts from Texas cities as well as some of the gymnasts will be performing who performed at the Los Angeles Olympics. Guest speaker will include Glen Hutka, RVOS president of Temple.

There will be a kolach social from 9:30 a.m. at the Band shell; also at 12 noon klobase, roast beef, sauerkraut and apple strudel will be served plus "pivo", all at nominal prices.

From 12 to 6 p.m., at the Band Shell, there will be more musical numbers, Czech singing and dancing to the music provided by James Zalkovsky and his Lone Star Czechs of Ennis. Beginning at 12:10 until 12:50 p.m., in the Creative Arts Building, located on the back side of the Cotton Bowl, there will be children's dances and singing, a promenade of Czechoslovak costumes and a Ceska Beseda dance.

At the Marine Field, located near the main entrance, from 2 to 3 p.m., there will be a Sokol exhibition featuring gymnasts from Dallas, Ennis, Fort Worth and West (some of them Olympians). This program will be directed by Robert Podhrasky and Brad Durham.

On the Big Tex stage from 3 to 4 p.m., there will be a Moravian Beseda dance, a special gymnastic number of Sokol Southern District and Team Tumbling by Sokol Fort Worth. There may be some changes, however, that is about the way it will go.

Gates will open at 7 _a.m.; come early, get a good place to park, have breakfast at the Fair.
