Texas Tech Receives Czech Language Grant

Temple, Texas August 12, 1984

Director Stanley Broz recently presented the College with a $1,000 contribution from the SPJST to be used in the Czech language program Those shown in the picture are L to R: Dr. Ulrich Goebel, Professor and Chairman of Germanic and Slavic languages; Dr. William Conway, Dean; Director Broz; Angeline Kristinek, supporter of the local Czech language programs; and Professor Peter Siska, Czech language instructor.

We have received information that in response to public requests and inquiries, the Czech language will, again, be taught this fall at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. Texas Tech, again, qualified for funds allocated by the SPJST for education institutions teaching the Czech language. The funds were authorized by the SPJST Convention and are administered by the Supreme Lodge through the Czech language allocations committee, a sub committee of the Supreme Lodge.

In an article appearing in the

Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar presents plaque and letter to Darrell Uptmor, which entitle him to a scholarship in the amount of $1,000, which is available to him when he decides on the college, university, or trade school of his choice. Darrell is a member of Lodge 6, Cottonwood in District III. The scholarship award covers the period from June 1, 1981 to June 1, 1984.

Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, Dr. Ulrich Goebel, Chairman of the department of Germanic and Slavic languages, indicated that funds donated to the Czech program have made it possible to offer the course.

The Czech language instructor is Professor Peter Siska who recently came to the USA from Czechoslovokia. The class will be offered as a night class. More information can be obtained by calling 742-3282 in Lubbock.

It was also decided that only one officer would attend these functions and he would be representing all the officers. The Supreme Lodge officers indicated they would work out a rotation schedule.

CONVENTION PROCEEDINGS/ BY-LAWS-The Supreme Lodge officers were authorized to act on the bids for printing of Convention Proceedings and By-Laws.

Recess for the day was taken at 5 p.m. until 9 a.m. July 11, 1984.

REQUEST FOR LOAN INCREASE-A request from an SPJST lodge for an increase of their loan was considered. The limit on lodge loans was reviewed, and after due deliberation, a motion was adopted to leave the limit unchanged and decline the request for the loan, because of the limit previously set by the Supreme Lodge.

LOCAL LODGE LIABILITY INSURANCE-There was a review of the general liability insurance needs for local lodges. Report was made on progress in having a standard policy developed for local lodges. The policy would be intended as an option for the lodges to consider when purchasing their liability insurance. A questionnaire might need to be mailed to local lodges to obtain information needed by an insurance company to formulate and underwrite a plan of liability insurance and worker's compensation.

A motion was adopted to pursue the matter of haNiing a package of liability and worker's compensation coverage developed for SPJST local lodges.

TEXAS FRATERNAL CONGRESS-The TFC annual meeting was set for October 19-21, 1984 in Kerrville, Texas.

OPTIONAL DIRECT BILLINGAfter due deliberation, the EDP Committee was authorized to do whatever was necessary to implement the optional direct billing as approved by the convention.

VESTNIK PUBLICATION BIDSThere was deliberation on the procedure to be followed in obtaining bids for publication of the Vestnik. It was generally agreed that an advertisement for bids be placed in the Vestnik and the Temple Daily Telegram. The Publication Committee designee and the editor will be invited to be present when the bids are considered in the October Supreme Lodge meeting.

ANNUITY INTEREST RATE-It was decided to increase the annuity rate from 11% % to 12% for the period from August 1, 1984 through October 31, 1984. The interest rate could be decreased during the October Supreme Lodge meeting but could not be set lower than 11 1/2 % through December 31, 1984.

Fraternal Affairs Dear Readers: The delegates to the past convention held in Corpus Christi last June approved a bylaw recommendation naming the president as the director of fraternal affairs. Therefore this will be, my concluding report to the membership as State Coordinator for the SPJST Child Abuse and Neglect project.

Thirty-two (32) lodges have responded to the request from the Supreme Lodge to the local lodges asking for their support of this statewide charity project. Donations have included cash money, food, clothing and materials needed by the children and foster families, contributions to the emergency shelters, as well as donations of members' time, talents and skills.

Sunday, August 5, it was my pleasure to attend a benefit for the Child Abuse and Neglect Project held at Lodge 172, Pasadena. The members prepared and served a delicious barbecue dinner. Four popular area bands donated the music for everyone's dancing pleasure. Prizes were given away, a local radio station furnished publicity and sold T-shirts, and a group of teen dancers performed, with all proceeds going to support the project in Harris County. Forty foster children were special guests of the lodge at the dinner and afternoon's entertainment. Over 500 people attended, and several thousand dollars was collected for the project. The officers and members of Lodge 172 are certainly to be commended for such an outpouring of generosity and support for our statewide project.

Lodge 133, San Antonio, will hold a similar benefit Sunday, September 16, at Comanche Park on Rigsby Avenue. A dinner will be followed by much fine entertainment, with a dance from 5:30 to 9:30. All the lodges are extended a special invitation to attend and help make this benefit festival a great success.

I wish to express heartfelt thanks to several people who have given me special help throughout this year as I served as Project Coordinator:

Vice President Bernie Gebala, who initiated the project and helped work out many of the details to get it off to a good start; Jerry Haisler, who worked closely with me as the project director and coordinator for the Texas Dept. of Human Resources, and who will continue to work with President Leshikar to keep the project forging forward; Harolyn Moreau from the Children's Protective Services who helped open my eyes to the needs and problems to these children and their families and suggested ways the lodges could help; the seven district directors and all the DHR workers who traveled with me and presented the project so well to the lodges and stoody ready to help the lodge volunteer workers; and, most of all, to the lodge officers, members, and project volunteers who supported the program in many different ways.

The kindness you extended to me and all the Children's Protective Services workers was most appreciated. I traveled over 6,000 miles across the state for thoproject and presented the Child Abuse film and program in about 15 lodges.

Everywhere we went, the response was tremendous. I feel we have all grown because of our involvement, and "I hope many children will have the opportunity to become good, productive citizens because the SPJST showed they cared through their support of this worthy project.

I will always remember you good members who opened up your hearts and pocketbooks to help with solutions to this serious problem facing many children in today's society. God bless you everyone!

Buckholts Lodge Announces Dance

Dear Members: All the members of Lodge 15 are so proud of our remodeled hall, we decided to have a remodeling dance.

The dance will be August 26 from 4 to 8 p.m. Everyone is invited so we can show off our hall. Please plan on coming.

Our regular monthly meeting was called to order by President Ann Balusek, who also led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

We had one guest Thomas Harwell present and a very special guest; it was his birthday and he and his lovely wife, June, welcomed anew grandson named Eric, so we had a lot to celebrate.

Once in a while we forget what a job it is to be an officer in a club and how much work it takes, so, at this time all the members and I want to say a big thank you to President Ann Balusek, Ed and Sidonia Svoboda, Charlsie and Pat Hillman for jobs well done!

We had one member Albert Kamenicky on the sick list and who was in the hospital. We hope and pray you are feeling better by now.

Anne and Gene Hejl, chairpersons, thanked everyone for the delicious desserts brought for our lunch after the meeting. They also graciously took the kitchen for the month of September. Thank you, Gene and Anne. President Pechal also reported there are some openings for the kitchen for the rest of the years so some of you members who have been thinking about running the kitchen had better hurry up and let Brother Pechal know as time is running out for this year!

Waco July Meeting Results

Lodge

Lodge 66 Linden Hall called its July 15 meeting to order at 2:30 p.m.

Flag Bearers Chris Owens and Bill Warren came forward and everyone joined in the Pledge of Allegiance.

All officers were present for the meeting. There was one guest present, Mrs. Johnson.

Everyone stood up for a moment of silent prayer for our deceased member Dorothy E. Moore.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.

Correspondence was read concerning a new law passed about the sale of alcohol to intoxicated people by businesses.

Board of Trustees met July 11; minutes were read by Sister Engelke. Brother Miller then gave the second quarterly report on receipts and expenses.

Brother Shilling of the Auditing Committee reported everything was in order.

The Entertainment Committee chairman reported that ice-cream will be served at the August meeting. On the lodge's birthday celebration, barbecue will be served.

Sympathy cards were sent to Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Teat, Sophie Leshikar and Mr. and Mrs. Louis Macha. Get-well cards were sent to Sisters Jeanette Smith, Emma Ceska, Jewel Warhol and Brothers Wayne Rossi and Chris Spence who is in the VA Hospital.

Our youth leader reported that twenty-one persons attended District III YAD in Fort Worth. She announced the winners and gave the category they won in; also the items were on display for everyone to see.

All first place winners were to participate in the State YAD August 12, in Temple. The youth would also be going to Six Flags in August.

Some of the members who were delegates at the convention came forward to thank everyone for their support in voting for'them to attend.

Our President Johnnie Gaidusek showed everyone present a plaque that was presented to Brother Otto Harms at the convention for a job well done! Everyone showed their appreciation by giving him (Brother Otto) a standing ovation. Also for Sister Matilda for being behind him 100% for so long.

Sister Smith then read a thank you from the Family Abuse Center for the donation they received. She also read off a list of some other items they could use. The floor then voted to donate $100 to each of the following: Sister Mary Vrana and Wayne Rossi.

Sister Parma thanked the Bingo Committee for donating $50 each month to the Trust Fund. She also thanked everyone who had donated money in memory of someone special to them. She then, asked the floor to increase the scholarship to $200. A motion was made and carried. Sister Parma also asked that everyone try to get more youth involved in the Youth Club program.

Brother Otto asked all of the committees that give reports involving the reading of names to write them down and give a copy of them to the reporters. It gets difficult trying to get them all correctly written down when someone is reading them off.

Sister Engelke suggested that the money for the lodge's birthday party be taken from the 8% refund. A motion was made and seconded to do so. At this time she presented the premium refund checks.

Our president installed the Youth Club officers who are Janice Stanislav, president; Donna Stanislav, vice president; Michelle Shelton, secretary; Bill Warren, assistant secretary; Chris Owens, treasurer; and Michael Warren, Telephone Committee chairman.

Birthday celebraties for the month of July were Polly Gaidusek, Roland Webb, Georgia Kofnovec, George Shilling, Leona Nors, Kevin Owens, Brian Cox, Glenna Dunagan and Emil Barak.

Door prize winner was Jewell Warhol.

Sister Libbie Parma came forward and asked youth member Larry Brern to come forward. She then presented him with a check for $200 towards the costs of his continued education. He will attend TSTI and then go on to Texas A&M University.

Larry was an active member of the Youth Club for 8 years. He has held several offices on the local level as well as in District III. He is a 1984 Connally High School graduate and belonged to several clubs including Future Farmers in which he showed the Grand Champion Lamb at the 1984 McLennan'County Show. He is presently employed at Community State Bank in Waco, in the Bookkeeping Dept.

Sister Parma then presented checks to members of the Youth Club who were winners in the Point system for the same amount as they received at District III YAD; they were Larry Brern, Donna Stanislav, Janice Stanislav, James Yates, Lynnette Nors, Kevin Owens, Chris Owens, Michelle Shelton, Bill Warren and Larry Yates.

The meeting was then adjourned.

Meeting Held At Lodge 88 August

The regular monthly meeting of Lodge No. 88 was held Monday, August 13th. President Ermis called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. and efficiently completed the business at hand by 8:55 p.m. The membership was informed of the activities of the various activities of the Officers, Committees and Board of Trustees during, the month of July.

Forty-seven new members were accepted into our Lodge 88. We would like to welcome them and hope that they will be active members.

District V President Tillie Helmcamp reminded us of the District V Family Day scheduled for October 7th. The district will provide meat and members are asked to bring a covered dish for the family-style lunch. Interesting booths will be provided and a program of entertainment will begin at 2 p.m.

The swimming season is drawing to a close for this year and back to school activities fill the air. Our Youth Club participated in the State YAD, as always, and represented our lodge, beautifully. We are proud of them.

Speaking of being proud, we are so proud that our Choral Club and Concert Orchestra will be going to perform at the World's Fair in New Orleans October 13 and 14. Our Youth Club will perform at the State Fair in Dallas. These groups are performing to represent the entire SPJST. Won't you please help them with their fund-raising projects to help defray the expenses of their trip?

Dear Members: Friday morning, July 27th when Susan got off from work, we packed and went to Rollover Pass to fish and crab. We caught about 15 or 16 crabs (nothing to brag about) and I caught a small croaker and a small hardhead. I gave them to a man nearby and said: "If they are big enough to bite, they are big enough to keep!"

One of our sisters, Sister Dorothy Othold has been in the Heights Hospital for some time and to make it sadder, her youngest son got married Saturday, July 28th and she was unable to be present, but she was there in spirit and prayers. I'm sure they will tell her all about it and have pictures for her to see.

(Hang in there Dorothy because you have all our prayers to get well; I'll try to go see you Wednesday) It seems that one of our young members had a small accident with a go-cart and got all bruised up. She is Michelle (Missy) Childress, granddaughter of Mike and Kathy Trefell.

Missy, you better stay off those gocarts because it may save some sore bruises.

We had a nice turnout for the Birthday Club Wednesday, August 1st, with a good dinner.

I understand that Sister Annie Baethe had her 95th birthday and had her children, grandchildren and friends with her to help celebrate her birthday. May you celebrate many more, Annie!

Jerome Janak III, has been ill again in California; he is the 14-yearold grandson of Justine Janak.

Hurry and get well, Jerome, so you can come visit us again.

J. E. Mikolas died of a heart attack in Port Lavaca; he was Sister Evelyn Mikolas' nephew.

Gus and Clara Ann Urbanovsky got the news Thursday that Gus's youngest brother, Robert

Services were held at 11:30 a.m.

August 4 in St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

Agnes Pederson told me that she had been in the hospital.

We're praying that our sick get well and may we remember our departed ones and their families.

I was told that 19 persons went on a trip to Hawaii (I saw some good pictures, it seems that they had a big time).

Harley and Viola Cox and Bonnie (their daughter) went on a nice trip.

Let's not forget that our monthly meetings are held - the second Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m.

Our recent meeting was held August 13th and I was hoping to make this one since I've been out of town for the last two meetings.

I was glad that so many of you hadreservations for the Jan Garber dance held August 11th. The Texas Brew played August 17th and the Knights of Dixie were playing August 18th.

Don't forget the tickets for Russ Morgan dance, the tickets go on sale August 24 for $10 per person.

I've just noticed in the newspaper that we lost a member, Mr. Eddie Schiller, 84, who passed away August 4th; a resident of Houston for 35 years, he was a member of the Houston Brethren Church and Lodge 88, Houston. May our brother rest in peace.

SPJST Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth Dear Members and Friends; August 12 a "small" group opened our regular meeting by leading us in the salute to the flag. Little Cody, Kelly and Brandi Kubala, Jon Eric Paprskar and Mary Cecelia Tesar, in union with the adults, did a great job.

Following the reading of the minutes by Secretary Christine Zich and the approval of same, the assembly observed a moment of silence in memory of deceased members; Minnie Tatarevitch, T. E. Hausey and Walter Ltiksa. Also mentioned was Frances Koneckny, mother of several children who belong to Lodge 92.

We next heard and accredited other reports and accepted three new members. We all welcomed a visitor, Victor Kubala, from Pilot Point, Texas. Our lodge hall managers announced plans for a Halloween Costume Matinee Dance October 28 from 4 until 8 p.m.

There's plenty of time to get those costumes figured out and with just a little effort you could be a prize winner and, if not, you still can have a lot of fun. The kids can all enjoy this because of the early hours.

Martha Durham, our sunshine chairperson, reported sending twelve birthday cards to members over sixty-five years of age. Some were present and received a hearty rendition of "Happy Birthday".

Martha also sent get-well cards to Bernie Kratky at Northeast Hospital and to Edith Quirk at All Saints Hospital.

The majority of the Youth Club was absent because they journeyed to Temple for the State YAD along with Cheryl, Gordon and Esta Belle Hubenak.

Donations to the memorial fund in remembrance of Minnie Tatarevitch were sent from the following; Dona Hubenak, Joan Hixson, and Joyce Whatley; also from Albert and Helen Kubala, and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Pulliam.

The attending members noted and approved the installation and effect of six new ceiling fans that are sure to aid in keeping the dance floor more comfortable than ever.

Bennie Bartek was unable to attend Sunday's gathering because of illness but she sent me a most interesting clipping from Buckholts, Tex. Lodge 24 concerning her nephew Jeff Beckhuesen. All of the accomplishments of this talented twenty-year-old are too many to

mention here but I am requesting our good Editor to reprint the clipping elsewhere in the Vestnik.

The last business of the afternoon was an accounting by V.P. John Paprskar of the Board of Trustees' discussion of plans for a new structure to house living quarters for hall managers along with space adequate for small meetings and socials. This is still only in the discussion stage therefore a committee was appointed to garner ideas and estimates for consideration at a later date.

Sherry and Mike Watson were named as volunteers for preparing food for our September assembly and the meeting adjourned at 3:00 p.m.

Sister Pavey reported on the cards sent. We were sorry to hear Brother Frank Kovar had not been feeling well, but he was in our midst.

Assistant Youth Leader Sister Carrie Milan reported that our youth Michael Mason, Blaine Mason and Josh Milan attended the Youth Camp and said they really had a good time.

We extend our congratulations to Sister Lisa Michelle Miteff who was wed to Thompson Earl Purvis III at St. Andrew Episcopal Church, August 14th. Mr. and Mrs. Meta Miteff are the bride's parents and Mr. and Mrs. Thompson Earl, Jr. of Fort Worth are parents of the groom. May they have a long and happy life together.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Sister Mary Hale for her 82nd birthday. May you have many more.

A Birthday Cake, baked by Sister Anna Johnson, and other goodies were enjoyed by all.

It was quite exciting to see Brothers Emil, Rome and Jerry Milan quite a few times during the Olympic Gymnastics; they should be coming home soon, with much to talk about.

Notice To Members Of Lodges No. 172 & 173 SUBJECT: Merger of Lodges No. 172 & 173 Monday, August 13, 1984 at 7:30 p.m., officers and members of SPJST Lodges No. 172 Pasadena, Texas and 173, Galveston met at Lodge 172 and discussed merger of the two lodges. Louis Hanus, Dist. V director, was present to represent the Supreme Lodge SPJST. Lodge 179, Warrenton Hears Good Reports Dear Members and Visitors: Sunday, August 5 was an enjoyable and busy day for Lodge 179 members, interested supporters and visitors including as special guests, Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar and wife and children, Brother Ben Trcalek, District I director, and past director Brother John Kubena and others when this fine group assembled at Round Top Rifle Association Hall for the lodge's annual celebration, which began with a delectable noon meal of fried chicken and all the trimmings and culminating with a variety shoot at 1:30 p.m.

The cake and variety walk and country store also displayed much enthusiasm. As the day drew to a close the feast came to a conclusion with everyone having had a super day.

Then Thursday night, August 9th at 8 p.m., our lodge held its regular meeting with a fair attendance.

President Harold Bergmann opened the meeting by leading the assembly in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Jeanette Schoenst read the minutes of the previous meeting and correspondence.

Lee Leonhardt gave the treasurer's report and also outlined the expenses and income of our 9th annual feast in details.

The president thanked everyone who brought cake, pie, pickles, etc. and an item for the country store.

Furthermore, he expressed special thanks and appreciation to those who worked on the various committees or helped in some way to have, made this feast a success as well as enjoyable.

In new business it was decided to have a variety shoot September 9th at Eichler's Drive Inn. A committee was appointed to take care of that project. Posters will be printed and displayed in various business places.

The Food Committee stated that the lodge will furnish cold cuts for our next regular meeting to be held at 8 p.m. September 13th.

The meeting was then adjourned.

Afterwards members and friends enjoyed delicious fried chicken and trimmings with tasty cakes, pies and refreshments.

Highlights From Lodge 183, Mid-Cities Dear Members: Since my last newsletter I have learned that two of the lodge members have been hospitalized; Jeanie Roznos fell and broke both arms, and Jill Doll gave birth to a 7lb., 2-oz. baby boy and had to spend a few days in ICU. The lodge sends them their best wishes and hope that they will be back to good health soon.

July 14th Inez Greenlees, Daniel and Mary Ann Roznovsky, Lambert Pustejovsky and Johnny Pullin did a lot of needed things at the lodge painting, fixing leaks, and building some railings around the outside airconditioning units to keep cars from running into them. Thanks to all of the good hard-working members because this is what keeps SPJST going and makes it more fun for all you members.

By the time this letter goes to press the monthly meeting will be history, also the monthly dance will be in the past. We hope everyone enjoys the music for the dances and invite all your friends, neighbors and relatives to the socials and show them a good time.

More plans also will be made for the Grand Opening for September 29th; hope all you members get involved and make this a great day for Lodge 183.

The lodge wishes to send their best wishes to Bennie Mae and Lambert Pustejovsky's daughter, Debra, who will be getting married to Mike Daniels August 25th at Saint Maria Groetti Catholic Church in Arlington. A long and happy marriage to Debra and Mike!

Lodge 189, BryanCollege Station Meeting Dear Members: The quarterly meeting of the lodge was held at 3:30 p.m. June 10, 1984. After the officers' reports, it was announced at this time that Clifton Junek had been approveds as a sales representative. It was decided that President Ernie Wentrcek would appoint the Nomination and Renumeration Committees before the next meeting.

A reminder to all, the next meeting will be at 3:30 p.m.

September 9, at the KC Hall. The officers for 1985 will be elected at this time.

President Pearl Hanka called the August 8th meeting to order and she also read one of her fantastic poems called, "Everyone Needs Someone."

Sister Rosalee Kostom read the minutes from the previous meeting and they were approved as read.

Sister Lillie Spies gave the treasurer's report and it was a good report.

Sister Mary Kosut, our sunshine lady, gave her report of whom she sent cards to. Sympathy cards were sent to Sisters Rita Alexander and Josephine Bishop. Get-well cards were sent to Sister Agnes Pederson and Brothers Miraslav Bily and Hubert Jarish. It was good to see Agnes Pederson back at the meeting. Sister Alverta Wilson has broken her leg for the second time.

We hope she recovers quickly and will be up and about again soon.

Hostesses for August were Sisters Bessie Dewer, Inez Jeanes, Georgia Buchannon and Martha Saco. The second Wednesday Esther Holton cooked for Inez Jeanes.

The meeting closed by singing "Happy Birthday" to the sisters who had birthdays; namely, Delores Condon, Betty Kulhanek, Judy Akey, Josephine Pumelia and Edna Froelich.

It was a pleasure to see so many sisters at the meeting.

SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas Softball Team Report Dear Brothers and Sisters: It has been quite, a while since I have reported to the Vestnik about scores and activities of our softball team.

These are some old dates starting with our game played Sunday, May 20, a first-half league make up game.

We played Dallas Micro Tool and we won by a score of 5 to 1. Lionel Schulz was the winning pitcher allowing 2 hits, 1 walk and 1 strikeout.

Hitters were Don Jarma with a single, a triple and a walk, Tim Hays with a double and a triple, Darrell Clements with a single, Paul Bartos a single, Don Lennox, Danny Yates and Kerry Goad with base-on-balls.

We played Trans-Con May 29 and we won by a score of 1 to 0, thus clinching a tie for the League Championship. Winning pitcher was Lionel Schulz allowing 5 hits, no walks and 3 strikeouts.

Leading hitters were Don Jarma, Don Palm and Don Lennox with single safeties, Tom Stites, Kerry Goad, Darrell Clements, Ron Bliss, Don Lennox and Danny Yates with walks.

Then, the following night, May 30 we played Dallas Metros and we lost by a score of 7 to 6 in a very exciting game. This closed out play in the Spring Season and we ended up League Co-Champions and the team received a very nice trophy to add to our trophy case.

Mike Moeller was the pitcher of record allowing 7 hits, 2 walks and 5 strikeouts and really, he deserved to win. Hitters were Kerry Goad with a double and a single, Danny Yates with 2 singles, Don Lennox with a double and single, Don Jarma,

Don Palm, Paul Bartos, Darrell Clements and Mike Moeller, all had single safeties.

We played in a Dallas Tournament Saturday, June 2 and we lost our first game 5 to 1. We won the second game 5 to 2, and lost the third game by a score of 8 to 3.

To determine the City League Spring Champion, we played our first game June 11th against Adairs and we lost by a score of 2 to 1.

Lionel Schulz was the losing pitcher allowing 7 hits, 2 walks and 1 strikeout.

We had only one single by Paul Bartos and Danny Yates and Ben Downey had 2 walks a piece and Don Palm and Tim Hays had one walk each.

The second game was played June 12 against Trans-Con and we lost an extra inning ball game 6 to 5 in the 9th inning. Lionel Schulz hurled the first 4 innings allowing 5 hits, 2 walks and 1 strikeout. Mike Moeller pitched the last 5 innings, allowing 4 hits, no walks and 2 strikeouts.

Leading hitters were Ben Downey with a triple and 2 singles, Don Jarma with a triple, 2 walks and a sacrifice hit, Kerry Goad with a double and a walk, Darrell Clements, a sacrifice hit, Tom Stites, a single and a walk, Tim Hays with 2 singles, Paul Bartos had 2 singles, Mike Moeller and Don Lennox, each had singles.

The weekend of July 7th and 8th, we entered a tournament in Denton.

Our first game was at 11 a.m. against the Fort Worth Merchants and we won by a score of 4 to 3.

Winning pitcher was Lionel Schulz who allowed 4 hits, 1 walk and 4 strikeouts.

Hitters included Tom Stites with a double, Kerry Goad had a double and a walk, Don Jarma with 2 singles and drove in the winning run, Danny Yates had a walk, Don Lennox, a single, Mike Moeller, a single and Paul Bartos, a single.

Our next game was at 8:30 p.m.

Saturday against Meadowbrook of Fort Worth and we lost by a score of 3 to 0. Losing pitcher was Lionel Schulz allowing 7 hits, no walks and 2 strikeouts.

Hitters were Kerry Goad, Don Lennox, Tommy Yates and Danny Smith with singles and Danny Yates had a walk.

We had to play Sunday at 9:30 a.m. against Denton and we lost by a score of 5 to 1. Mike Moeller was the losing pitcher allowing 3 hits, 3 walks and 6 strikeouts.

Leading hitters were Paul Bartos with a double, Kerry Goad and Darrell Clements with singles, Don Lennox, a single and sacrifice fly and Don Jarma, a walk.

This report will bring us up-todate with all games and next report will start with our July 11th game which covers our play in the FallSummer League.

Lodge 66 Hosts RVOS Family Day The Waco-Ceska RVOS Lodge No. 109 celebrated its 25th anniversary in July with an annual family day, barbecue and dance at the SPJST Linden Hall in Elm Mott. The letters "RVOS" is a trademark derived

8/V2 STNiK—Wednesday, August 22, 1984 from the first letter of the Czech words "Rolnicky Vzajemne Ochranny Spolek" meaning "Farmers' Mutual Protective Association." The Waco RVOS Lodge was organized in 1959 with thirteen (13) charter members. It has been one of the most progressive lodges in the state and now has a membership of 1,012 and ranks fourth in the State of Texas.

In appreciation and in recognition for his efforts in being instrumental for the organization of the Waco lodge, Otis Jerry Ceska was presented a lovely plaque by Johnnie Gaidusek, Sr., director of RVOS District I and a member of the Waco Ceska Lodge 109. His wife, Emma Ceska, was presented a lovely corsage and a silver necklace.

Approximately 750 persons attended the social. Honored guests were Glenn Hutka, President StateOffice, and wife, also John Dugat and wife from the State Office in Temple; also, from the State office, Past President Jerry Valchar and wife, and past secretary-treasurer George Hubik and wife, all of Temple.

The Waco Ceska RVOS Lodge 109 holds quarterly meetings and socials with the highlight of the year being Family Day and Christmas parties.

Local lodge officers are Dorothy Moore, president, Emma Ceska, vice president, and Rosemary Spence, secretary-treasurer.

Otis and Emma Ceska are members of SPJST Lodge No. 66, having been faithful workers and officers for many years. Otis served on the building committee during the construction of the original Linden Hall and held various offices with SPJST and for many years served on the Board of Trustees of Linden Hall. Their daughter and son-in-law, LaNell and Elmer Brem, and their three grandchildren, Karen, Jerry and Michael Brem, are all members of SPJST Lodge No. 66.

Granddaughter Karen Brem is a graduate of Lorena High School and, during her senior year, attended classes at McLennan Community College. She will be attending Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas this fall.

Westfest Involvement

By Maxine Sefcik Every Labor Day weekend (since 1976) brings scores of people from different nationalities to a community of approximately 2400 at West in McLennan County to share something of interest for every member of the old and young family.

Last year a live TV promo had been aired over KCEN in downtown West to acquaint the listeners with S.P.J.S.T. Rest what the Westfest is all about.

This year another live TV Home No. 2 coverage will take place Tuesday, August 28th on Channel 6 at 11:30 The Board of Directors and a.m. with Pam Slovar narrating the administrators of the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Westfest highlights of some of our Home No. II in Needville, Texas participants in authentic costumes, would like to sincerely thank the Miss Westfest and the Mayor persons and organizations who inviting everyone to our friendly donated or contributed goods and city. time to the home and residents.

DISTRICT II SUMMER CAMP The summer is fast rushing by and back to school days are just around the corner. The SPJST activities for the summer will be over and only a few activities left for this year. (Missing the August 15th Vestnik sure caught me by surprise and I missed out getting a detailed report of our District II fall meeting.)

I attended camp for 7 days and the

day I got home I did not look at the mail. Then Friday afternoon I was going through my mail and reading the Vestnik and saw that there will be no August 15th issue, but the date was in the Vestnik and I had mentioned it in prior letters, so I hope you come to the District II fall meeting.

Group II was chaperoned by Sherry McKenney and Linda Michka from Lodge 74, Lovelady.

Elaine David helped with Group IV at Junior Camp and she was also camp nurse for the juniors. Gloria Ebner was in charge of crafts for the Junior Camp. Both ladies are from Granger Lodge 20.

District II Teen Campers — Melvin and Geraldine Steger of Lodge 29, Taylor were chaperones for Group I. Also pictured is Rita Marburger from Granger Lodge 20 who was in charge of crafts for teen camp.

by Guy Hilsobeck from Lodge 187 Round Rock, and Nancy West from Lovelady Lodge 74 who also helped as camp nurse. Guy supervised the boys and Nancy had charge of the girls in this group. were all winners in your districts.

At teen camp we had a total of 61 campers of which 44 were youth, the rest were staff and chaperones. At junior camp we had 69 of which 56 were youth and LITs and the rest included staff and chaperones.

We hope all of you enjoyed camp.

The schedule was a little slower this year for a little more free time.

Canoeing was out for this year because the river looked very sad when there was no water. The wildlife must move to find water in order to survive. There was only one place that I saw water so I imagine

you saw a lot of wildlife at this location. I saw some small deer which we have not seen before, so I figured that they were there in search for water. I feel that this water shortage is getting worse as the years go by and that some day we will have a serious water shortage in this country.

I would like to thank all the leaders/assistants and chaperones who took time to attend camp and helped in every way that you did; we could not have had a camp without you, all of you were very important.

Also, a big thank you to the LITs for their help and time. We appreciated all the youngsters from the youth clubs who attended camp for your behavior and attention. If there are things you liked or disliked tell your youth leader so she can pass it on to me.

The main thing that I always fear is that someone may get hurt seriously, so each year, after camp and before, I thank the Lord for watching after us and keeping us from injuries. This year we had no serious injuries and no one had to see a doctor due to other health reasons, so that is something to be thankful for.

I will end for today and will give a report next week on State YAD and the fall meeting. Thanks to all for attending camp and all other SPJST activities.

SPJST YOUTH CLUBS ENJOYED NORTH TEXAS OUTING Dear Vestnik Readers, The Youth Club of Lodge 73, Seymour and Lodge 77, Bomarton had a wiener roast held July 15, at Miller Creek in Baylor County.

We had a great time boating, swimming, fishing, riding the floating pontoon and, most of all, eating hot dogs!

Jay and Lisa Tomanek caught one big turtle and one catfish.

We want to thank our leaders for the fun-time, especially Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Joe Orsak for taking us boating, and letting us use their floating pontoon. We're looking forward to doing this again maybe before school begins.

Incidentally, the Czech Folk Dancers of West were selected among the top three groups throughout Texas from an attendance of 40,000 spectators.

Most of the dancers belong to Lodges 6, 54, and 66. We congratulate them for their constant promotion of the Czech Culture and Heritage.

During the 2-day festivities at Westfest, there will be 12 hours each day of dancing to live bands at two locations on the same premises; Sunday, you will, especially have an opportunity to hear the famous HiToppers and Don Peachey Orchestra from Wisconsin. Don Peachey's Orchestra will also perform at' Lodge 25, Ennis- August 30th and at Lodge 47, Seaton- August 31st. *r*

September 16th has been reserved. for Lodge 133 in San Antonio to sponsor a Child Abuse and Neglect Program for a worthwhile project.

The.lodge has previously announced that all proceeds will go to this charity. They also promise everyone a lot of enjoyable entertainment by various local and out-of-town singers and dancers. A cordial invitation is extended to all of you to attend and your support will be appreciated.

On the same weekend there will be a Czech flavor entertainment and food to eat at Lodge 84 in Dallas when they have scheduled their Czechfest for a 2-day occasion.

Sister Rose Scott had a complete detail of their festivities and Sister Evelyn Salac also extended her assistance to accept various contributions for their projects. *** Czech Day, at the State Fair of Texas, has been designated for Sunday, October 7th. Brother Roy Alholm had an article on the upcoming event in the August 1st issue, and Brother Bob Zvolanek in the Czech language had a writeup in the August 8th issue. We hope many of you plan to participate in many of their activities; Beseda dancers performing and accompanied by live music by the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra, Sokol Exhibitions, Original Czech Costumes in Review, speakers, and more dancing to -another band. We went swimming and afterwards we had refreshments. We had a great time; there were nine youth members, three guests and six parents at the meeting.

Eight youth members from our lodge attended District I YAD in Caldwell. It was quite exciting since most of us had never gone before.
