Texas Tech Receives Czech Language Grant

Temple, Texas August 12, 1984

Director Stanley Broz recently presented the College with a $1,000 contribution from the SPJST to be used in the Czech language program Those shown in the picture are L to R: Dr. Ulrich Goebel, Professor and Chairman of Germanic and Slavic languages; Dr. William Conway, Dean; Director Broz; Angeline Kristinek, supporter of the local Czech language programs; and Professor Peter Siska, Czech language instructor. We have received information that in response to public requests and inquiries, the Czech language will, again, be taught this fall at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. Texas Tech, again, qualified for funds allocated by the SPJST for education institutions teaching the Czech language. The funds were authorized by the SPJST Convention and are administered by the Supreme Lodge through the Czech language allocations committee, a sub committee of the Supreme Lodge. In an article appearing in the

Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar presents plaque and letter to Darrell Uptmor, which entitle him to a scholarship in the amount of $1,000, which is available to him when he decides on the college, university, or trade school of his choice. Darrell is a member of Lodge 6, Cottonwood in District III. The scholarship award covers the period from June 1, 1981 to June 1, 1984. Darrell is the son of Aubrey & Rose Uptmor of Elm Mott. Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, Dr. Ulrich Goebel, Chairman of the department of Germanic and Slavic languages, indicated that funds donated to the Czech program have made it possible to offer the course. The Czech language instructor is Professor Peter Siska who recently came to the USA from Czechoslovokia. The class will be offered as a night class.
