Your editor reported, some issues back, that these two brothers had been elected to those respective positions. They are both well-known to yours truly for many years as well as by our membership for their devoted service to our SPJST Society.

Brother Pokladnik, who is no stranger to countless SPJST members, has been leading a very active role in our Society since his early life; through the efforts of the late Brother Frank B. Steiner, Sr., he was involved in many activities on the lodge level and soon became president of Lodge 84, where he served in that capacity for a number of years.

From an early stage in life Brother Hanus has grasped, quite a bit about the SPJST through his parents, the late Louis Sr. and Rosa Hanus of Lodge 88 in Houston. His parents who were very strong supporters of the "Hlahol" Dramatic Club and dedicated workers at the lodge, inspired interest in others and some of it rubbed off on Brother Louis where he helped organize (the first youth club in the SPJST).

In this issue, on page 6, in the Youth Section, is a letter of information about State YAD and directions on how to get to the Frank Mayborn Convention Center, plus a schedule of events for that day. The Grand Opening and Dedication date of Lodge 183, MidCities at Arlington had to be rescheduled from October 20th to September 29th because some of our Supreme Lodge officers and directors will be attending Texas Fraternal Congress. We hope all of you brothers and sisters, especially in District III, will make a notation of the official date. ***

All our districts have had their share of activities after the convention that involved numerous individuals assisting their respective district youth counselors.

Sunday, July 22nd, we had the pleasure of attending District I's Youth Achievement Day which was hosted by Lodge 186, Caldwell.

It was indeed an inspiration to see so many youngsters from the Bryan, Caldwell, Centerville, Dime Box, New Tabor and Warrenton lodges competing in Arts/Crafts, Talent and Royalty. The six queen and two king contestants, with their duchesses and dukes, highlighted the evening's activities. It was indeed heart-warming to witness the outgoing queen, Pamela Spitzenberger, crowning her sister, Penny Spitzenberger, as the 1984-85 District I Queen from Dime Box.

The sound of cheers, after each winner was discovered, signified the support of our young members, and we are certain they are awaiting the final step that closes each annual event: State YAD - August 12th at the FRANK W. MAYBORN CONVENTION CENTER, 3303 North 3rd Street in Temple, with registration beginning at 10 a.m.

District I deserves everyone's praise for a well-organized Youth Achievement Day. Our hats off to DYC Susan Skrabanek and all her assistants. Good luck to your entrants at the state level! *** As we have mentioned before, the annual State Youth Achievement/ Royalty Day will soon close its calendar activities and now it's time to focus everyone's thoughts on the fall district meetings.

Round Rock Lodge 187 members are hosting District II meeting, August 19th. An interesting program is planned for the day's festivities for the entire family, we encourage your presence because the host lodge membership will appreciate a large attendance. For more information we suggest that you refer to DYC Frank Klinkovsky's letter in the previous issues.

Some of the other districts have also announced their district meetings; District V has planned a Family Day, October 7th in conjunction with their meeting at Lodge 88 in Houston and New Taiton Lodge 30 will host District VI meeting, October 14th at the New Taiton Community Center. *** A law just passed by the Texas Legislature and signed by Governor Mark White will go a long way toward protecting the health and safety of Texas children. The new law requires the use of automobile safety seats or seat belts for chidren under age four. Its aim is to reduce the grim statistics which have Texas leading the nation in deaths 'and injuries for this age group.

Last year in Texas, 78 children under the age of four died as innocent passengers in automobiles, and another 6,603 were injured — many seriously. National studies indicate that up to 80 percent of the deaths and injuries could have been avoided through the proper use of child passenger safety restraints.

Texas lawmakers passed the bill mandating the use of child passenger safety seat systems on June 30, 1984. Specifically, the legislation requires children under two years old to be secured in child passenger safety seats, and children between the ages of two and four years to be secured by either safety seats or safety belts. The law goes into effect October 31, 1984.

The new legislation also provides for a $25-$50 fine for noncompliance, (Continued on page 12)

June/July Meetings Of Lodge 6, Cottonwood Due to being absent at the last meeting, I am putting two reports together.

Family Day For Lodge 4, Hallettsville Dear Members: Our lodge met Sunday, July 8, 1984 at 6 p.m. in the evening in the Grant Bldg. with local Lodge President Frank Zabransky presiding. Gaynell Chudej led the members in the pledge to the flag.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes from the previous meeting which were approved.

Convention reports were given by the delegates who attended. They noted some of the changes made and an overall successful convention.

Treasurer Helen Zabransky gave her report. She also read a letter from the Lavaca Work Activity Center pertaining to the Special Olympics. The members voted to contribute to this worthy program.

Committees were named and plans for Family Day were made. It will be held Sunday, August 12, at the American Legion Hall in Hallettsville beginning with a beef stew dinner with trimmings to be served at noon, as usual, with a small charge. Ladies of the lodge may bring pickles, peaches, cakes, kolache or pies to be served. A short meeting will be held in the afternoon with initiation of members and recognition of 50-year and over members. A representative from the Supreme Lodge will be with us. A Bacon Wheel, sponsored by the mother lodge, will provide entertainment in the afternoon. Members and their families are encouraged to attend.

Refund checks were given out and the meeting adjourned.

July, August and September birthdays were honored. Those present with birthdays were Linda Mikush, Gaye Galetka, Patsy Zabransky, Hilmer Galetka, Erwin Holy and Otto Holy. The winner of the birthday cake was Erwin Holy.

Linda Mikush won the adult door prize. Refreshments and lunch were served and enjoyed.

Make plans now to attend our annual Family Day to be held Sunday, August 12th at the American Legion Hall in Hallettsville beginning with a beef stew dinner with trimmings to be served at noon as usual. Members and their families are invited to attend and spend an enjoyable day.

Fraternally, Patsy Zabransky, Reporter -SPJSTSTATE YAD-1984 The 1984 State YAD (including Royalty) is set for Sunday, August 12, 1984, to commence at 10 a.m. at Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center, 3303 North 3rd., Temple, TX. The noon meal will be catered; resume YAD early in the afternoon. We plan to finish by 6:30 p.m.

The monthly meeting for June was called to order at 3 p.m.

Sunday, June 10th by President Robert Dobecka. The meeting for July was held Friday, July 6,1984 at 8 p.m.

Kevin Dobecka and Keith Hykel led the Pledge of Allegiance at the June meeting.

Shirley Dobecka and Elaine Stuckly led the Pledge of Allegiance at the July meeting with Shirley reciting the SPJST Pledge.

Roll call of officers at the June meeting was called with Sister Rose Uptmor and Peggy Dobecka being absent. Officers absent at the July meeting were Sister Stella Perez and Rose Uptmor.

All reports given at both meetings were in order.

Correspondence read at the July meeting was from the Supreme Lodge in compliance to the new laws concerning sales.

Sister Willie Mae Schuetz reported the youth took cakes to the Rest Home July 4th. Our youth members did very well at District III YAD. There were several first place winners and many second and third places taken in Arts/Crafts. Congratulations to all the youth; they did a very good job. Shirley Dobecka is our District III Queen with her Duchess Tammi Dobecka. Darrell Uptmor is Teenager of the Year and Kevin Dobecka is Junior of the Year. Everyone is looking forward to State YAD. The youth sponsored several games at the annual picnic. Shirley Dobecka brought the birthday cake.

Door prizes drawn at the June meeting were $10 door prize, Rita Svacek, (not present) $10 door prize, Nancy Neill, (not present) $4 progressive door prize, Patricia Jaska, (not present) and $2 door prize was won by Cyrill Srvcek. Door prizes at the July meeting drawn were $10 door prize, Audrey Dvoracek, (not present), $10 door prize, David Schroeder, (not present), $5 progressive door prize, Vlasta Blaha, (not present,) and the $2 door prize was won by Edward Hykel.

The next Board of Trustees meeting was set for Friday, July 27th at 8 p.m. and the monthly meeting for August will be held Friday, August 10th at 8 p.m.

Due to moving and other events, my newsletter is late.

Next month I will have the letter in earlier. I also want to thank my mother-in-law Lydia Dobecka for taking notes for me at the •June meeting.

18, Elgin Held July Meeting Lodge

Our July meeting was called to order by our president, Brother Morris Boutwell.

Brother Roy Simank led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Roll call of officers read by Sister Doris Brian showed one officer was absent.

We had a silent prayer in memory of Floyd Felfe, Jr. who passed away July 6th; he was the son of Floyd and Peggy Felfe. Our sympathy is extended to the Felfe family and to Curtis Young whose cousin passed away last week.

Sister Pat Young reported our youth members did very well at District II YAD. They came home with five 1st places, two 2nd places and two 3rd places. They also attended McDade Watermelon Festival. Camp is coming up soon.

Floyd Felfe gave a very interesting report on the Convention held in Corpus Christi last month. Irene Helgren thanked the lodge for electing her a delegate; she learned a lot and all had an enjoyable time. Delegates Floyd and Peggy Felfe, Evelyn Gustafson and Irene Helgren brought back a large group picture and donated it to the lodge; so look at it next time you come to the lodge hall.

Alvin Klotz won the door prize.

28, East Bernard Meeting Lodge

Dear Members: The August meeting, of Lodge Karel Jonas, will take place on the 5th, at 2:30 p.m. Besides the regular items on the agenda, there will be more discussion on some old business from the July meeting; also any new business needing attention

will be taken care of.

The social "Gathering" will take place after the meeting.

Both the June and July meetings covered discussions of convention items. All reports made, in both meetings, were accepted as given.

Several motions were made, in both meetings. to take care of lodge operations; all passed. In the June minutes, it was noted, that Sister Mildred Srubar donated a large platter to the kitchen.

In the June meeting, Father's Day was honored with a special door prize from the lodge. This was won by a recent transferee, Brother August Kubena. He also won the regular door prize. In addition to the lodge prizes, several sisters donated prizes. Sister Frances Haverda donated three prizes. They were won, in order, by the following Brothers — Anton Kelner, Jr., Albert Lupik and A. J. "Tony" Kelner. Sister Mildred Srubar donated a prize and it was won by Anton Kelner, Jr. Two prizes were donated by Sisters Luquette and Nezval and they were won, in order,

by Brothers Albert Lupik and August Kubena.

In the July meeting the regular door prize was won by Sister Annie Foytik. An additional prize was donated by Brother August Kubena and it was won by Brother Anton Kelner, Jr. The socials of both meetings were well-attended and enjoyed by everyone present. Discussions covered a wide range of subjects but the prime one was the lack of that thing called rain. In the June social, Sisters Haverda, Srubar, Luquette and Nezval added additional food items to the table to make things more festive. In the July meeting, Sisters Janik, Haverda, Kortis, Srubar, Brdecka, Foytik, Luquette and Nezval made everyone happy with their donation of additional food to the table.

Brother Brdecka brought a box of tomatoes from his garden. Just about all present took some home.

On a sadder note, this writer learned that Brother Ed Talas passed away sometime late evening of July 9th. He was found close to Simonton where he was farming some land. Most brothers and sisters, of District VI, did not know Brother Ed personally but knew of him through the good barbecued sausage and ham served at the District VI Spring meeting held in East Bernard. He was 54 and will be missed in the community.

Reports Given At Lodge 40 Meeting Many

Dear Vestnik Readers and Friends: The July 18th meeting of the El Campo Hillje Lodge 40 was called to order at 8:00 p.m. by Vice President Benny Reck.

The Pledge of Allegiance was followed by a minute of silent prayer for our departed members.

Secretary Laverne Bacak called the roll of officers. Due to a variety

Motion was made, seconded and carried, that the minutes of the May and June meetings be accepted as reported in the Vestnik.

Second Vice President Rita Vanek read thank you notes from Debbie Rose Mondrik, Garland Blaha, Carolyn Blaha, Kim Vanek, Eric Payne, Robbie Churan and Mr. Lowe for our contribution to the scholarship funds.

This month's application for membership was Leslie Bacak. Welcome!

Treasurer Leona Machu reported on regular, special, bar, bingo and moneymarket accounts. She did explain some of the uses of the different accounts.

There was no old business.

Sister Margie Kulcak explained insurance needed on the new addition will be prorated.

Construction on the building started in the latter part of June. Wiring was laid and concrete poured. Three walls and insulation are now up; looks like construction is moving right along.

Brother Benny Reck says panels for stalls in the men's restroom are to be installed soon. We had such a good response on our Work Day last year, we are thinking about another one to spruce up the place after all the construction is finished. The brick wall will need painting, the stage could be refinished and the kitchen cabinets finished. Our old hall is really coming alive!

Dear Members: We held our regular monthly meeting Sunday, July 1st. President Bohac called the meeting to order at 2:10 p.m.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all members present.

Roll call showed all officers were present.

Secretary Latham read the minutes of the June meeting.

They were approved as read.

In correspondence we had a nice letter from Sister Thelma Hrncir, thanking us for having the privilege of having a part in our June meeting.

We accepted one new member at the meeting; he is Nickolas Ivicic, son of Mr. and Mrs. Darvin Ivicic.

Frankie Pajestka Jr. and Glen Latham gave us a good report of what was done at the Convention.

Our sympathy is extended to the Sister Frances Balusek family.

Sister Balusek was a member of longstanding (61 years) in the SPJST. A motion was made and passed that the local lodge will reward the representative from our lodge who will sell the most insurance by the end of the year with a prize or entertainment to be determined by the lodge (a very good gesture, I think.)

In closing I would like to say that the SPJST members should be forever grateful to our outgoing President Nick Morris for the past 151/2 years while he was president.

The SPJST made tremendous progress in new lodges, lodge buildings and History of the lodges.

Personally, to you Brother Nick, I am very grateful for all of these accomplishments.

I am writing this on the morning of July 24th, and we are having a wonderful rain falling up to this time 10 a.m.; we had over 2 inches and still raining steadily.

News

Dear Members: It was good to go on vacation but it's good to get home. We were gone from the 7th of June until the 26th, but, oh the work: unpacking and cleaning clothes.

We went to New Mexico, then to Old Tucson, Arizona and proceeded to San Diego, Long Beach, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Murphy's, Carson City; and then to Salt Lake City, Utah; Denver, Colorado; Carlsbad, New Mexico and to San Antonio, Texas and, of course, back home.

We saw some beautiful sights and played in the snow. We went to Disneyland, Queen Mary, Spruce Goose and that is a sight, it's so big! It was nice and cool, also downright cold.

We will be on The Price Is Right program, September 26th. We didn't get on the stage, however, we sat right close to the stage.

We went to Matagorda to see my sister for 3 days and came home (had out-of-town company for 4 days). While in Matagorda, Louis stepped back on my 2 big toenails and I will lose both of them. I had gotten shots each day for infection and the doctor said that he may have to finish pulling them off Monday.

I was sorry we lost Frances Crossman and Rita Alexander lost her mother. Let's try to remember them in the families'

sorrows.

The children in District V had their YAD July 8th. I wished there could have been more people supporting them; what they did have was very good.

Good luck children at State competition. I hope you all will win again. (Not being able to wear shoes, I haven't been to the lodge for the past week.)

I understand that District V camp will be August 6th through 9th. I hope you all have a good time, but be very careful and don't get a sun stroke or overheated.

I understand that there was a good attendance for the ceramic classes Tuesdays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Be sure you bring your lunch each time.

Dear Members and Friends: The July 11th meeting was called to order by President Marie Tesar with twenty-three members and three children present. We made welcome our new members, Ann Sustala and Irene Green.

The July birthday members were Louis Belota, Carolyn Cleveland, Jeanie Mason, Rosie Steinman and Albert Boenisch.

Rosie Steinman and Louise Oujesky volunteered as hostesses and the delicious spread of many salads, cold cuts and desserts was enjoyed by all. The August 1st meeting will be a cold luncheon, and the hostesses will be Jo Prochaska and Martha Boenisch.

Anna Johnston was able to be in our midst after foot surgery. We were sorry to hear that Rose Million had fallen while visiting a friend at Lake Tahoe and broke her arm. We wish her a speedy recovery.

Our wedding congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Carlton Layton, (the former Doris Korteff Burnette) who married on July 21, 1984. Prior to getting married, Doris spent two weeks touring in the Orient. We wish this newlywed couple many years of happy bliss.

We also extend our congratulations to Jesse and Tracy Hajek who will celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary August 4th at the Sacred Heart Parish Hall in Seymour, Texas. We know it will be a lovely affair, but Roy and I regret we will not be able to attend, due to our attending a Wave convention in Wash., D.C. Lad Maly of Azle, Texas will have, as his guests from Prague, Czechoslovakia, his cousin, Vera Korabekova and a friend, Vera Seifortova, a tour guide who helped highlight Lad's tour of Czechoslovakia in 1983. We do hope these young ladies will have a pleasant three week stay in our U.S.A. To all the Texas polka fans that will be attending the annual Pla-Mor Czech Polka Fest in Lincoln, Nebraska in August do have fun.

Roy and I will be visiting our son, Tony, his wife, Kathy, and three grandsons in Chicago. Tony and Kathy have returned from attending a lawyers' convention in San Francisco where the National Democratic Convention drew national attention.

Day, October 7th, Dallas State Fair

Czech

Once again, Czech Day will arrive at the State Fair this year The program has not been finalized, and those of you who wish to participate must notify the program committee now; but no later than August 10th. We encourage diversity. Let us hear from you. Complimentary gate passes are funished to all who are involved. Please write to Mr. Stanley Patak, 2122 Swansee, Dallas, Texas 75232 of your inten-

tions and the program committee will advise you subsequently. Yes, we hear from many of you that the fare is almost always the same, just as it is where the entertainment is scheduled. We are fortunate to be able to have the Band Shell for a complete day, especially on Sunday.

Likewise, to have Mass in the morning for the convenience of visitors and local people; and to have the "Big Tex" stage, Creative Arts Building, and the Marine Parade Ground in the afternoon, are assets to our program presentation.

Although the Band Shell is not on the midway or on the main thoroughfare, its isolation makes it a good place to meet friends, enjoy the program and participate in partaking of Czech souvenirs, food and drink.

So What? Now is the time to look ahead and mark the calendar, that this day is reserved for Czech Day at the State Fair. To many of you withirf a 2 hour drive, you can make "it" for Mass, if you or your family are Catholic. Then, after a light snack at the Band Shell, you can tour the exhibits and attractions before returning to have a "Czech" lunch.

Then the afternoon programs are sequenced, so they can be seen by everyone; or one may wish to remain at the Band Shell with its excellent program. With our dance finale, everyone has to clear the area soon after 6:00 p.m., in order that the evening's fireworks may be presented safely. Thus, when you leave, you will be home by 9:00 p.m., safe, sound and satisfied.

Why is it important to keep up our Heritage? Well much of it is dying in the mother country, which isn't perpetuating the old customs, dances, songs or dress. This is the link through our parents or grandparents with our forefathers who persevered in maintaining the Czech language, etc. under trying conditions of Czars or Kings or of invasions by French or German armies in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Be proud of the Czech Heritage!

Since our schools do not dwell on the Czech accomplishments in all fields of endeavor, who else but we who take that little extra effort to keep up the traditions, try to pass it on to succeeding generations.

If the Houston band and the choral group can make the round trip in one day's time, why can't you?

Let us see you with a "Dobre Rano" in the morning and wish you a "Na shledanou" when we part after a full day of festivity.

Austin Czech Aqua Fest Czech Night of the Austin Aqua Festival will be held Tuesday, August 7 from 6:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Auditorium Shores, Town Lake off Riverside Drive between South 1st Street and Lamar Blvd.

There will be 6 stages of entertainment, of which two will be Czech. On the Beer Garden Stage at the west end of the grounds starting at 6:30 will be Fritz Hodde and the Fabulous Six of Pflugerville, Texas alternating with the Vanek Polka Band of Victoria. The "Young Czech

Texans" of Dallas will dance at 8 p.m.

On the Feature Stage starting at 6:30 will be Eddie Ray and The Polka Dots of Taylor, alternating with the Harold Strand Orchestra of Waco. The "Young Czech Texans" will dance on this stage at 9:30.

Directly in front of the Feature Stage KJZT No. 93 and KJT No. 112 of Austin will have a Heritage Display Tent and a Kolache Booth with kolaches, rosettes, etc. for sale.

Many different foods and beverages will be available on the grounds from other groups.

Country Singers Ray Price and Johnny Rodriguez are two of the many other entertainers performing on the festival grounds on Czech Night.

Price at the gate is $5 for adults or $3 with a Skipper Pin bought before August 3 from local merchants.

Children are $1 at the gate and those under 6 are free. There will also be activities and a stage for children.

Come join us for a fun evening at this 16th annual spectacular Czech Celebration in Austin!

My Stibal family were very active in Idaho. Originally they came from Jetfichoves and Milein, near Tabor, in the old country. The grandma Moural from Podhradi, Budejovice and Mrs. Stibal, nee Strnad, Bylany, Kutna Hora. Grandma Opasek from Albrechtice.

Years ago, I edited two weekly newspapers in Idaho and was also county judge. I wish to honor the forgotten Czechs, who made this country great.

Hope you will run the enclosed news item in your fine paper, so that kin of the Idaho settlers will see the names and take an interest in their family.

You will also notice that the lunch hour overlaps some of the activities. This is regrettable, but there are many phases to cover and as stated, we hope to be able to finish at a reasonable time.

DISTRICT VII YOUTH ACHIEVEMENT DAY Lodge 107 hosted our 1984 YAD. I wish to thank the members for giving up their Sunday to do this for our youth. The snack bar was especially good.

Youths from Lodges 79, 107, 117 and 185 participated in YAD this year. We had some exceptional crafts and talent numbers. We had 3 Queen contestants, 3 Duchesses, 1 King, 1 Duke. All the speeches were well prepared and presented. The job of the judges was far from easy.

A special thanks goes to the judges, tabulation workers and all who helped out.

We had several former youth club members present (they also assisted). It is great to welcome them back and hear of their roles in life after Youth Club days. We were honored to have our 1983 Queen Amanda Burleson to crown the new queen. Joe Landin was also our 1983 king.

To all youth and parents who made our Youth Achievement Day, I want to express my sincere thanks. I know how hard each of you worked and to me, you are all winners.

Enjoyable Outing Held By District VII

The district outing at H.E.B. Camp Linnes Wings was a success beyond my wildest expectations.

The 2,000-acre Foundation is a natural beauty to behold. The clean clear water of the Frio River was a swimming paradise, under the watchful eye of our lifeguard Anna Trojakova. Anna proved to be an educational experience for everyone as she told of her experience in Czechoslovakia and her trip to the free world. Anna has been in the U.S. for 2 1/2 months and has

mastered the English language in this short while. Anna, we thank you for your lifeguarding and your friendship.

The campers spent most of the time in the water, but after dark hours were spent dancing (also break dancing), playing table games, then just visiting. I heard about a domino game that — wel l I better not tell about that. I will just say hat there is a challenge to resume the game at next year's outing.

The nature hike led by the assistant H.E.B. camp director was enjoyed by all who went; our fearless leader was on a crutch (made while at camp from a forked limb), due to a twisted leg muscle When a few loose rocks rolled from under her feet. Anyone who knows Bill will guess who made the crutch.

The kitchen duties were really enjoyed (or so it seemed) by those who were always busy around meal time. The nice kitchen with large freezer, ice maker and ice box was very functional. The Foil Dinner cook out was great (ask us for our recipes). We also had real bar-be-que chicken and charcoal-cooked hamburgers.

The boys were always busy, catching fish and cleaning them, but they never made it to the skillet, Those attending camp will tell you all about this wonderful fellowship experienced at this outing.

Our LIT Todd Ellzy instructed archery, when the rain would allow it; he also assisted the 6 through 9 age group in their activities.

Everyone at camp made a kite for craft, but the limited June wind made flying them quite a chore. We had two high flying kites plus one that landed in a tree. Several kites flew, for a short while but some never got airborne. How long since you have flown a kite? Get out and try it, if you want some real exercise, man against nature.

The time at camp went so fast it was over before we knew what had happened.

Getting set up in a new camp was a lot of work for the leaders. Now that we are acquainted with Camp Lone Star it will be smoother sailing next year. We got our share of walking. No cars were allowed past the parking area in the front of the camp. All our luggage plus all camp

supplies had to be carried to the assigned areas. We may all have learned to pack lightly for next year Dancing was again the most enjoyed night activity. We popped corn every night and enjoyed the cookies that each camper brought.

The punch jug was also a popular spot.

We enjoyed having Lodge 79 youth clubbers and their leaders at camp for the first time. We are looking forward to seeing them again next year. We had campers from Lodge 79, 107, 117 and 185.

We also had visitors from District VI. A special thanks is extended to the leaders for all the work it took to operate camp. With no staff for the activities, it was a lot of work; each of you gave a little bit more to make camp work and it did just that.

DISTRICT VII YOUTH CAMP REPORT

Thirty-three youngsters, one leader-in-training (LIT), five chaperones, two lifeguards, one district youth counselor, one assistant DYC made up our 1984 camp.

A change of scene for our camp this year took us to Camp Lone Star in La Grange.

We camped in two large dorms.

This was a new experience putting all age groups together. We really got to know each other.

The horseback riding was rained out one day, so each camper got one trailride. The horses were exceptionally gentle, no luting or kicking. Everybody enjoyed the long shaded trails. Camp Lone Star has many beautiful trees.

The pool ground was the most popular activity. We were so fortunate to have Frankie Campbell and her daughter, Cindy, from San Antonio to lifeguard for us. They were always ready when we needed them at the pool or canoeing.

August 25th, we will be going to Padre Island after the meeting.

Each Youth Club member is asked to bring as many of the following school supplies as possible: Crayons 16 count, package of notebook paper (200 sheets), bottle of glue, folder with pockets, pencils, etc. These will

be donated to the Department of Human Resources. There are children who cannot afford to buy basic school supplies, so any help will be appreciated.

-SPJSTPOKLADNIK (Continued from page 1) organized after the 1952 Convention, he travelled the state with his spouse and close associates to stimulate interest among other district members and soon there were insurance sales contests between Districts III and V to see who wrote up the most insurance and then the losing district would host the winning district. Brother Sid has also served as District III president for many years.

He has served as convention chairman for four consecutive conventions. (At the 1964 Convention, he was elected District III director and was re-elected to serve his sixth consecutive term at this last convention.)

Brother Sid is serving on the Executive Board of Directors of our S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes along with the other rest homes' directors who have supervised and maintained an exemplary management for other rest homes in Texas.

In addition to the various capacities he has served and/or is serving, he is known as serving on different Executive Board panels in the Texas and National Fraternal Congress sessions. For a number of years, Brother Sid, along with some of the Supreme Lodge officers and directors, has attended and obtained valuable information for our SPJST. During their recent SPJST Supreme Lodge quarterly meeting, Brother Sid was elected Chairman of the Board of Directors by his fellowmen.

Brother Pokladnik, a wellestablished Dallas businessman and rancher, enjoys being with his wife, Justine and their immediate family.

HANUS (Continued from page 1) Then World War II came along and interrupted many young men's lives for armed services and Brother Louis was among them where he served as Captain. After the war he became adjusted to civilian life and soon the Korean War interrupted and, again, he was called to active duty. He stayed in service until he received his honorable discharge and came back to Houston to settle down.

After several years working for the Schott's Bakery in the sales department, he became a supervisor and was able to adjust to some of the outside activities; such as the SPJST affairs.

12/VRSTMK—Wednesday, August 1, 1984 He has helped and promoted activities long before he became president of Lodge 88 in 1966, 1967, 1968, 1975 and 1976. He also was a member of the Board of Trustees at Lodge 88. He is the only second generation at Lodge 88 having served as president.

Due to the death of District V Director Ernest Hanka, the members in the district elected Brother Louis Harms and he was reelected in 1980 to serve another term which will expire December 31st, 1984. Brother Jerry Prochazka will assume the duties of District V director, then.

Brother Hanus was elected Vice Chairman of the SPJST Board of Directors at their last quarterly Supreme Lodge meeting in Temple.

After a busy day's work he enjoys being with his wife, Oleta and mother-in-law.

In reaction to the new law, Dr. Robert Bernstein, Commissioner of Health said, "It gives me great pleasure and relief to learn that the legislature has acted on this problem. The new law, combined with public education and awareness campaigns, will save the lives and protect the safety of thousands of infants and young children in Texas."

In an effort to increase parents' voluntary use of safety seats and to reduce the number of young children killed or injured in motor vehicle accidents, the Texas Department of Health has initiated the Safe Riders program.

This program, conducted in cooperation with the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation, began in April.

John Snider, child passenger safety coordinator at TDH, said the program consists of the statewide awareness effort and a special demonstration project in the Dallas/Fort Worth area (Public Health Region 5).

The statewide effort includes: *A public awareness campaign to encourage parents to use child safety seats in their cars; ,„ *A toll-free information line (1800-252-8255) manned by bilingual (English/Spanish) operators from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday; *Promotional and educational materials for consumers and health care providers concerning the use and availability of car safety seats; and *Educational resource materials for community leaders who want to establish loaner and reduced-cost sales programs.

"Because children cannot decide for themselves whether or not to use a safety seat, the statewide Safe Riders public awareness campaign will inform the public about the benefits of using car safety seats properly and consistently," Snider said.

"Information in English and Spanish about localized .child passenger safety programs which w loan or sell seats at reduced prices is

available through the hotline. In addition, callers may order bilingual educational materials, as well as receive consumer information about safety seats," he said.

The demonstration project in the Dallas/Fort Worth area includes: *A localized public awareness campaign; *Face-to-face educational programs and technical assistance for health care providers and community leaders to establish loaner and discount sales programs and to encourage local parents to use safety seats; and *Provision of about 1,900 safety seats to supplement existing loaner programs and stimulate the creation of new ones.

This demonstration project is expected to show that the deaths and injuries of children in motor vehicle accidents will decrease with better availability and wider use of child safety seats. The Dallas/Fort Worth area was targeted because it has a high number of children who are under age four and who do not use safety seats and because it has a high percentage of deaths and injuries resulting from automobile accidents.

To further widen the scope of the child passenger safety program in Texas, TDH is sponsoring the first statewide Child Passenger Safety Education Conference. It will be held in Austin on September 13-14 at the Austin South Plaza Hotel. The conference is also sponsored by the Texas Public Health Association, Texas Society of Public Health Education, Texas Medical Association, Texas Pediatric Society, American Academy of Pediatrics-Texas Chapter, Texas Medical Association Auxiliary, Center for Health Promotion Research and Development, Texas Coalition for Child Passenger Safety, Texas Safety Association, and the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation.

E. HAUSEY, of 4520 Melinda Street in Fort Worth, who passed away in a hospital July 10, 1984, at the age of 74.

He was a retired butcher and was a member of the Scottish. Rite, Tarrant Lodge No. 942, and the North Fort Worth Chapter, No. 684, of the Moslah Temple.

He was also a member of Diamond Hill Baptist Church and of SPJST Lodge No. 92. He had been a

Fort Worth resident for 69 years.

Brother Hausey is survived by his wife, Katy L. Hausey; two daughters, Mrs, Connie Votaw, Fort Worth, Mrs. Joann Samuels of Arlington; brother, Curtis W. Hausey of Fort Worth; a nephew, Dewey Neufeld of Fort Worth, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral service was held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, July 12 at Shannon's North Funeral Chapel with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Rev. Bill Swank officiated. Arrangements were by Shannon's North.

Brother Ondrusek was the owner and president of Columbia Packing Company. He was a charter member of SWMPQ (Southwest Meat Packers Association), Oak Cliff Lions Club, St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church and SPJST Lodge 84. He dearly loved Lodge 84 and made many contributions over the years. Before his illness, he never missed an SPJST ball club game and when they won a trophy, he always furnished the steaks for the celebration.

Survivors include wife, Carlyn Ondrusek; sons, Willie J. Ondrusek, Jr., James Robert Ondrusek and Joseph Carl Ondrusek; daughter, Barbara 0. Wolfe; sister, Annie Janousek; 16 grandchildren; 9 greatgrandchildren, and one nephew.

Rosary was recited June 15 at the Crane-Weiland Chapel. Funeral Mass was held June 16 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church with Rev. J. Douglas Deshotel, celebrant. Interment was in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Pallbearers were Jerry Manak, Ben Jarma, Emil Chmelar, Douglas Charba, Ron Coker and John Bragman. Honorary pallbearers were employees of Columbia Packing Company.

JURCIK REUNION The annual Jurcik reunion will be held Sunday, August 5, 1984 at the Sokol Karel Havlicek Borovsky in Ennis, Texas on Highway 34 East.

The descendants of Alvis and Anna Jurcik are invited to attend and make this a large attendance.

Registration starts at 10 a.m. Each family is asked to bring enough food for their family and guests. We are looking forward and hoping to see relatives from different states to attend this year's reunion. As usual each head of the family is asked to notify his/her family of the date.

Friends are invited to come and spend the afternoon visiting with us.

MAREK-SUPAK-HAISLER REUNION NOTICE That time of the summer is almost here, so mark Sunday, August 12, on your calendar and don't forget the Marek-Supak-Haisler Reunion!

We will meet at the Hus School Encampment near Caldwell, Texas, as usual. 12:00 noon is the starting time, but come earlier and have more time for visiting. (You might even get to help get things ready!)

The building will be open. Bring all that delicious food we have every year-the meat, vegetable and dessert dishes. The tea, coffee, bread and eating utensils will be furnished; a soft drink machine is available. The families of Emil Marek and Emil Fick are in charge of the reunion. Gifts will be presented to the youngest and oldest family member present; also to the family from the farthest distance and to the family with all members present.

This is a nice recent family "tradition" that has been started.

Each family (each original family group) is to bring a gift - perhaps something you made, or a white elephant, maybe? - for a drawing, using the name tags of everyone registered at the reunion. Be sure to include on your "things to bring" list information and dates concerning any weddings, births, or deaths in the family since last year or that has not been turned in to me, and, don't forget your old family picture albums and scrapbooks to show.

Everyone loves to look at pictures and this is a chance to show off your family!
