Sister Irma (nee Hruska) Klinkovsky was recognized by the Supreme Lodge for completing 25 years of loyal service as a Home Office employee. Irma began her employment in the Home Office on June 15, 1959 and worked under former Supreme Lodge Secretary, J. F. Chupik. She served for several years as a secretary to former secretary Raymond Urbanovsky. At the present time, and since January 1, 1973, she has been a valued employee in the secretarytreasurer's department.

During the July Supreme Lodge meeting, Irma was recognized for her many years of devoted service and presented with a token of appreciation. The members of the Supreme Lodge and all of the Home (Continued on Page 11)

Please plan your letters and write a week ahead, especially dates for future affairs. *** One of our National Conventions are now over which was held in San Francisco and, watching it several nights last week, it brought back some thoughts of our convention held about a month ago in Corpus Christi and brought thoughts of where, in some ways, we were similar and, in some ways, of course, very different.

Those of us who watched saw that there was wasted time in certain places same as in ours, and, on the other hand, there were many ideas brought forth and much democratic discussion of ideas. Of course, we are just about the same way and cannot criticize too much for waste of time because that seems to be done at every convention to a certain extent.

Your editor was disappointed that the subject of paying $2,000 for the writing of the History of the SPJST was brought up again, because if I had even the slightest inkling of an idea that it would be brought up in this convention after it had been brought up in the 1980 Convention and defeated, I would have written how the history-writing came about.

One delegate figured that we had taken about enough time discussing and voting on this $2,000 payment to figure it costing the convention $5,000.

You will notice in the YOUTH SECTION under STATE YAD, there has been a CHANGE in LOCALITY and TIME of beginning, it will commence at 10 a.m. instead of 10:30 a.m. at the FRANK W. MAYBORN CONVENTION CENTER, 3303 North 3rd Street in Temple, Texas. The day's activities including STATE ROYALTY will conclude approximately 6:30 p.m. SL President Leshikar notified us of the change and please check the STATE YAD/ROYALTY time and place of the YOUTH SECTION. We hope to be able to be present and certainly wish all of our young people the best in their efforts at State Youth Achievement and Royalty Day; remember, if you don't win "first" place you are still a

winner because you have gotten as far as SYAD! And, as they say, next year is another year. ***

Ranchers who are being forced to sell livestock because of decimated pastures and reduced water supplies should begin considering the income tax aspects of their losses.

"Income from drought sales may be treated two ways for tax purposes, depending on whether the livestock is considered inventory or breeding stock." Both types of sales are outlined in the Farmer's Tax Guide.

Income from the sale of inventory stock may be deferred for up to one year, he said.

"Producers can elect to defer the revenue from sales of certain livestock, such as steers, heifers and calves, for one year if the sale was due to drought conditions."

However, he explained, this particular election does not apply to livestock used for breeding, draft, dairy or sporting purposes.

If, because of drought, a taxpayer, whose principal activity is farming or ranching, sells livestock in excess of the number that would be sold in a normal business year, he may elect to include the proceeds in the next year's income provided that: the cash method of accounting is used; it can be established under usual business circumstances the number sold would not have occurred; and, the drought has resulted in the area being designated as eligible for federal assistance.

Purchased livestock, such as stocker steers or heifers, as well as "raised livestock" will qualify, he said. In addition, sales made prior to an area being declared eligible for federal assistance may qualify.

To determine the amount of income to be deferred, a producer must first calculate the average amount received per - head sold during the year and multiply this figure by the excess number of head sold due to drought, he said.

When livestock kept for breeding, draft or dairy purposes are sold or exchanged solely because of drought, the sale or exchange is considered an involuntary conversion.

A taxpayer may elect to postpone the tax on the gain from sales of breeding livestock if replaced with livestock of like kind within two years from the close of the year in which the gain was realized.

"The taxpayer's principal business does not have to be farming or ranching and the area does not have to be officially declared eligible for assistance by the federal government."

Tax on the gain may be postponed on the number sold in excess of the usual practice. A loss resulting from the sale is deductible in the year that it is sustained.

In either situation, direct losses may be reported either in the IRS Form 4797, Supplemental Schedule of Gains and Losses, or on Schedule F, Farm Income and Expenses, if the livestock were purchased and died or were sold at a loss.

However, basic information covering tax deferral should be reported in IRS Form 4797, Supplemental Schedule of Gains and Losses. The tax return for the year of (Continued on page 15)

u ii District V Family Day Dear Members, We district officers had a meeting with Lodge No. 88 officers to start plans for our District Family Day. We had quite a problem facing us!

At the spring district meeting we had decided to have our Family Day the last Sunday in September, but Lodge No. 88 had that date filled.

Since Lodge No. 88 is the only lodge that offered to have this day, we district officers had to change the date of our Family Day to October 7th (the first Sunday in October).

This will be a fun-day for you and your family, and we hope you make plans to attend it. It will be a covered dish luncheon, and the district will furnish the meat and beer before the meal. We will be entertained during the noon hour by Lodge No. 88 Concert Orchestra and Choral Club. There will be various displays for you to enjoy and a program of comical skits and dances.

Buckholts Sets Meeting Date Dear Members: After all the heat and dry weather we've been having, the barbecue supper that Warren and Pat Hillman made for all of us to enjoy really did taste good.

When everyone finished, President Ann Balusek opened the regular meeting of Lodge 15 by leading the members in the Pledge of Allegiance. All remained standing for a few moments of silence in memory of our departed Brother James Gray.

Sister Balusek welcomed our visitors, Louise Stalmach, Dan Balusek, Lillie Zajicek and Thomas Harwick. We enjoyed having you, please come again.

Roll call showed all officers present.

The minutes, all officers' and committees' reports were approved as read.

We are happy to welcome a new member Justin Miller and we had one member to take our more insurance, namely, Melinda Wright.

We were sorry to hear that Brother Frank Svetlik fell and broke his hip a while back, but he is doing better by now and is out of the hospital. We hope and pray good health will stay with you.

Sister Ann Balusek gave a very interesting report about the convention. We are real proud that Pat Hillman was elected substitute Bylaw Committee member.

Birthdays this month were Louise Stalmach and Martha Stalmach. We hope both of you had a very happy day.

"Happy Anniversary" was wished to Pat and Warren Hillman and Ed and Sidonia Svoboda.

Dear Members: Our June meeting of Lodge 24 was called to order by President David Vanicek.

Flag Bearers for the meeting were Christie Waits and Christie Marek.

Visitor at the meeting was Heny Lynn, grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Haisler.

We wish Ben Tyroch a get well wish; it was reported at our meeting that he is ill.

The members of Flag Hall also extend their sympathy to the J. T. Surovik family on the accidental death of the granddaughter from Dallas.

Wilbert and Margaret Mikeska will be kitchen chairmen for the month of August. Please call them if you would like to work some Saturday at the dance.

Keep a. mark on your calendar for September 2nd because Sterling Country will have an Appreciation Dance here at the hall; everyone is invited to come out and hear this great band.

We welcome new member Ashley Veselka to our lodge.

Congratulations to our Youth Club for winning six "1st" places at District II Youth Achievement Day last Sunday. Now, they will advance to State-competition in August (the new location of State YAD will be announced later by Supreme Lodge — Editor). If you have never been to State YAD, make plans to attend because it really is some good entertainment.

Regina Zabcik gave an extensive report on the convention. We want to thank all the delegates from our lodge for taking time out to go to the convention and for a job well done on their duties. Thanks again to all the delegates!

Celebrating birthdays this month are Barbara Macek, Johnny Chervenka, Glenda Gottcher and Pauline Marek.

The 50-year members were honored with a dinner and program.

It turned out very well. I want to thank those who came out, also those who worked in the kitchen and cooked stew; the dinner was very good.

Our next meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. August 13th; until we meet again, take care.

From Lodge 32, Victoria

News

SPJST, Lodge 32 met recently at InterFirst Bank for the monthly meeting. All officers were present.

Georgia Lynn Horelka was approved as a new member.

The Czech Fest, which was held on July 1, was discussed. The event was a great success. Each committee chairman spoke briefly about their booth. A "workers' appreciation" dinner is planned for August 1, at Kiwantis Park. All workers and their families are invited. Each member is asked to bring either a salad or a dessert. The meal is to be served around 7 p.m.

The District VI YAD was discussed. YAD is to be hosted by our lodge on Sunday, July 15, at the Victoria Community Center Annex.

The new state officers were announced and all agreed that this should be a good, productive year for SPJST. Refreshments were prepared and served by Pat Marek. The door prizes were won by Aaron Spears and Theo Kocian.

35 Changes Meeting Date

Our July 8th meeting at Elk was called to order by President Henry Breitkreutz, and Dawn Pavelka led us in the pledge to the flag.

President Brietkreutz then introduced our guests, Elmer and Cindy Smith and children, Billy and David, who are in the process of becoming members.

Secretary Rosemary Banik read the minutes which were approved; she also read a letter from the Supreme Lodge concerning liability insurance.

Treasurer Eddie Banik gave a good report.

Youth Leader Louise Burney then gave a report on the youth activities. The youth will have a campout August 3rd or 10th at Trails End. She announced the names of the youth who placed at YAD. They were as follows: Richard Burney; 1st in Talent, 1st in Foods, 1st in Science and Constructed.

Melissa Burney: 1st in Talent, 3rd in Foods, 2nd in Home Arts, 1st in Handicraft/Miscellaneous, 3rd in Education/Science.

Pam Cullen: 1st in Talent 1st Group Talent, 2nd in Foods.

Dawn Pavelka: 2nd in Foods, 1st Group Talent, 2nd Home Arts.

Under new business there was a discussion of our Saturday night bands and changing our next month's meeting date which has been changed from second Sunday in August to Friday, August 10th at 7:30 p.m. So, you members please make a note of this.

On the sick list is Edwin Pavelka, who is in the VA Hospital at Temple and Helen Pospisil's granddaughter, Charlene, had heart surgery. but is reported doing very well; we wish them a speedy recovery.

Sister Vlasta Pavelka is now in the Mart Rest Home, and I'm sure she would enjoy a visit from her friends.

The adult door prize was won by Elizabeth Kubitza and Richard Burney won the youth door prize.

With no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

From Lodge 79, Corpus Christi

News

Well, the convention is over and, after a much needed break and rest, I thought I'd better get back to the Vestnik. Along with the convention preparations, yours truly was also moving and becoming a grandmother for the second time so I really needed the break.

The experience of being on the Convention Committee and a delegate for the first time was very rewarding. I have been an SPJST member all my life but have never gotten this involved. It has brought me closer to our organization and definitely more interested.

I met so many lovely members from all over the State and each and everyone of them could not have been nicer. I do hope I get to meet up with some of these people in the future.

I feel the convention went smoothly but, if it weren't for the help and cooperation of our Supreme Lodge officers and staff and the delegates plus their guests, it might not have been so. The Convention Committee would like to express our thanks for all this cooperation that made our jobs easier.

Thanks also to our local help, especially Michelle Pesek, Carrie Veselka, Cindy Tepera and Brother Jerry Sijansky who video taped a lot of the proceedings. The tape was fantastic.

The officers and Convention Committee of Lodge 79 do hope everyone enjoyed their stay in Corpus Christi.

Our regular meeting was held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 11th. After the Pledge of Allegiance, Brother Veselka called the meeting to order and all officers' and committees' reports were given.

4/VE. STMK—Wednesday, July 25, 1984 The main topic of the meeting was the convention, with each delegate giving a brief report to our members in attendance. We were very pleased with our turnout. Monta Foster showed the delegate picture which he had framed and it will go into our library along with other pieces of interest from the convention.

Sister Milly Elzner announced one new member, Tiffany Rambo, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Newell Rambo and granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peters. Charlie Majek wrote up the policy. We lost one member. She was also a dear, close friend of mine, Agnes Bollom, who passed away in June. Of course, Milly also acknowledged my new granddaughter, Kristen Nicole, who was born June 29th; her parents are James and Kay Tepera of Uvalde.

Assistant Youth Leader Virginia Rebecek gave a report of the local youth attendance at District VII YAD. She stated that nine members attended and participated and almost all came home with ribbons.

She also reported that four Juniors attended District VII camp. Those attending were Stephanie and Steven Rebecek, and Cheryl and Charlie Majek. She reported that the quilt project was very successful and now the Juniors have funds to work with. A special thanks was given to Sister Mildred Foster who donated her time in quilting the quilt. The Juniors' next meeting will include an ice-cream social.

Our lodge will not have a meeting in August but let's all turn out in September. We hope everyone has a nice summer.

Sets August 14th Meeting Needville

Lodge 81 met July 10 for its regular monthly meeting. President Charlie Matcek called the meeting to order at 7 p.m.

Sister Willie Mae Kuykendal led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag and we remained standing in silence as a tribute to our deceased Sister Lillie Vitek who passed away at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home. May she rest in peace.

The meeting was called to order for business. All officers answered the roll call.

Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes of the previous meeting.

She also read a card of thanks from the Stanley Slacalek family and Lillie Vitek family for the memorials.

Financial Secretary Jo Ann Morgan gave her report. Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendal gave the financial statement. Special Fund Treasurer Gilbert Walzel gave his financial statement. All of these reports were accepted as given.

Two new policies were issued to Kenneth White and Veronica Lyn Wetz.

Reported on the sick list are Willie Valka and Ruby Kuban. We wish them both a speedy recovery.

Wm. Fojtik, Sr. of Wharton has been in ill health and is now a resident of the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home. We were also saddened at the death of Ed Faler, husband of Sister Lydia

Faler. Our deepest sympathy goes to their family. He will be missed in our midst.

President Charlie Matcek showed the group picture of the delegates, Supreme Lodge officers, and nondelegate committee members, which was taken on the steps of the Convention Center just before the convention convened. Very good and interesting reports were given by all the delegates and President Matcek then gave the results of the election of officers. From all the reports we learned that everyone had an enjoyable time in connection with the proceedings of the Convention, all reported Lodge No. 79, Corpus Christi proved to be a very gracious host.

Refund checks were handed out and the door prizes were won by Lillie Teykl and Charlie Matcek.

There being no further business the meeting adjourned. See you at our next meeting August 14th at 7 p.m.

San Antonio Holds Regular Meeting

Lodge 133 held their regular monthly meeting, July 8th. There was no meeting during the month of June because of the SPJST Convention that was held in Corpus Christi.

Our meeting was called to order

by President Emil Matula at 2 p.m.

He led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance and also asked the members for a moment of silence in remembering our loved ones who have since departed.

Roll call of officers by the secretary indicated that all officers were present.

Flag Bearer Brother Alfred Kalmus, who was absent, was replaced by Brother George Schultz who was appointed by the president for that particular meeting.

Minutes of the past meeting were read and accepted, also the treasurer's report was accepted which was given by Sister Viola Mazac.

Lodge 142, Houston Meeting Dear Mr. Sefcik and Members: Our monthly meeting was called to order at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 8, 1984. We had fifty-four members present, who attended and recited the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

Secretary Alice Jochen read the minutes from the previous meeting after roll call of officers. All officers' reports were also given.

District V Youth Counselor Dorothy Pfluphaupt held a meeting for District V youth members at our lodge, June 27th. Officers were elected, namely: Pesident —Keith Kieschnick, Vice President—Curtis Kieschnick, Secretary — Cheryl Schilhab, Treasurer—Debbie Beyer, Sergeant-at-Arms and Sunshine Committee—Jason Hermis.

Then President Mary Ann Kieschnick asked for nominations for our own local youth leader. Brother Henry Hermis nominated Sister Rosie Tumis. Sister Tumis accepted and was elected by acclamation. We now once again have a local lodge youth leader for Lodge 142. Thanks to Sister Rosie Tumis.

New applicants for June were.

Our delegates attended the convention in Corpus Christi in June.

This was very educational and we learned a lot. We have a new Supreme Lodge president, Brother Howard Leshikar. We all intend to work with this young man and give him our support, just as we did to Brother Nick Morris. We also have a new District V Director, Brother Jerry. Prochazka.

Our door prizes went to Frances Barrett, Ella Cieslevvitz, Millie Linhart, Dennis Veselka.

Congratulations!

The capsule prize for $5 went unclaimed by the absence of Ladig Joe Ermis, Jr. Next month's prize goes to $10.

Youngest member present for the $5 prize was Amanda Hermis, little 4-year-old daughter of Dennis and Elizabeth Hermis.

The meeting adjourned at 2:45 p.m. and all members present enjoyed a great meal of sausage, sauerkraut, potatoes, beans and trimmings. Thanks to Sister Rosie Tumis for preparing this delightful treat which was enjoyed by all.

172, Pasadena To Host CA/N Benefit

Lodge

Dear Members and Friends: From the many empty seats everywhere, it is a Sure sign that vacation is in full swing. Joe and I were lucky to have enjoyed a nice vacation in Florida in May before schools were out and the lines of people were still short. Time goes by so fast and soon everyone will be getting back to their usual routine and the empty seats will be filled again.

Our May and June meetings were normal except for a few members who were on vacation at that time.

We had two donations to the lodge: Mr. and Mrs. Norman Tofte donated a nice chair for the ticket office and Mr. and Mrs. John Hausler donated a nice small table for the backstage lounge. Many thanks for those gifts; they are appreciated and I am sure they will be very useful. Our socialdinner dance of June 24th was a great success. Many thanks to all of you who helped with that social. The barbecue was made here by the members. Thank you, ladies, for bringing the delicious pastries! It is so encouraging when so many participate. Thanks, again!

Our big event is coming up SUNDAY, AUGUST 5, 1984 from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.—a barbecue dinner and dance to benefit the CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT PROJECT OF HARRIS COUNTY. Sister Rose Tanecka is chairman of this project and she is doing a tremendous job. Rose is still walking with the aid of a walker and sometimes in a wheel chair as a result of some broken bones but she is doing the work as if nothing had happened to her. What an inspiration to us!

She has contacted several TV and radio stations for advertising, also several newspapers. We will have 4 big bands featuring: The Original River Road Boys Kelly Shoppa & The Amarillo Boys Texas Brew Country Motions Starring: Leon Rausch, (vocalist of the Original Texas Playboys) (Barbecue and Dance: $10 Donation; all proceeds go to Abused Children Fund) Make plans to attend this worthwhile event.

We hope to have some of the radio disc jockeys to appear and our special guests will be Judy Hay and some of the children from the Child Abuse Home of Harris County. Judy Hay appeared on our program here several months ago with Sister Thelma Hrncir, who is the volunteer coordinator for Child Abuse and Neglect Project for the SPJST. It is heart-warming to see so many generous people. The bands are donating their music; the TV

stations and radio stations are giving us free advertising and so are the newspapers. We want them to know that everything is greatly appreciated by the lodge members.

We hope to be able to give a nice sum of money to the Harris County Child Abuse Program. The need is great and donations are needed. For more information call 487-3297 or 473-4174 SPJST Lodge 172, 3609 Preston, Pasadena, Texas.

The July 15, 1984 meeting of the SPJST Lodge 178 was called to order by President John Campbell, who also led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Libbie Bartek thanked the lodge for allowing her the privilege to attend the convention.

There was no new business brought forth for discussion.

The Board of Trustees did not meet because of the Fourth of July holiday, but a meeting was held Thursday night, July 12th.

A motion was made, seconded and passed to adjourn the meeting; it adjourned at 9:50 p.m.

Dear Members and Guests:

Sunday, July 1st at 8 a.m. thirtyeight interested members and guests boarded a chartered bus for a pleasure trip to Galveston. Upon arrival the group first viewed the various Sea-Arama shows and exotic birds and fish. Then, we all took a round trip ride on the Bolivar Ferry.

Now as time availed many enjoyed the beach, although that day, we had intermittent rain which didn't interfere much. At 8:30 p.m. the group all attended the live play, "Texas Lone Star" at the amphitheater.

At the conclusion of the program we, again, boarded the chartered bus and returned home. We arrived at Warrenton at a late hour having

spent a very enjoyable and memorable day and evening.

Thursday night, July 12th at 8 p.m., Warrenton Lodge held its regular meeting with President Harold Bergmann presiding, who also led the assembly in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Jeanette Schoenst read the minutes of the previous meeting and correspondence.

Brother Arnold Peters gave the financial report and an interesting and informative report on the convention at Corpus Christi. He also stated that he and Sister Peters enjoyed the convention and their stay in Corpus Christi.

Brother Lee Leonhardt gave the treasurer's report that was accepted as given.

Our annual feast of August 5th at the Round Top Rifle Association Hall was again discussed and plans finalized. The noon meal will consist of fried chicken and all the trimmings. Chicken to go will be ready at 10:30 a.m. and serving commencing at 11:30 until ?? There will be a variety shoot at 1:30 p.m. for your entertainment, etc.

Working committees were appointed, which will be posted in the Warrenton Store. Members are also to bring a cake or pie which will be sold by slices and an item for the Country Store.

We were happy to vote into our lodge the listed new members, David Vierus and Bryon Radenz. We warmly welcome them and hope that you will be active members.

The Serving Committee for July, August and September consists of Mr. and Mrs. Fritz Schoenst, Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Lee Leonhardt and Sister Edith Pfeiffer; they stated, that for the August 9th regular meeting, at 8 p.m., the lodge will furnish cold cuts.

With no further business, the meeting adjourned. Afterwards, all enjoyed a delicious lunch including ice-cream.

Texas Lodge 191 News East

A big HAPPY ANNIVERSARY to us. Lodge 191 is one year old this July 1984. We are planning an anniversary dance to be held in August. Keep your eyes and ears open for more information on this dance. I will announce details later.

We held our June meeting and old and new subjects were brought up.

Our June dance was a big success in spite of the many summer activities.

We had a good turnout and our band enjoyed the new band stand we built for them. Other improvements have been done such as more room at the entrance of the building. And listen to this six ceiling fans have been installed throughout the dance floor.

It sure looks nice and sure is a lot cooler. Many thanks also to the people helping improve our lodge with repairs and keeping of the lawn.

We had our July meeting and, as usual, discussed our subjects of interest but besides this, Jerry and Gloria Sizemore, who represented us at the Corpus Christi convention

6/VESTNIK—Wednesday, July 25, 1984 had brought back a lot of news. They also reported that they had a real good time.

Don Sessum's band will be playing for us the 28th of July. Make plans to be there.

Mrs. A. Milsted, our secretary, has come up with a real good idea that is already getting off to a good start. She has started a program of MEMBER'S YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP and already donations have been made. We urge all members to participate in donating to this cause and in new ideas of raising money for the kids.

Ennis Sewing Circle

Our Krouzek met July 12, 1984.

The meeting was called to order by President Sadie Kubin. Thirty members and four guests attended.

The guests were Mary Patak of Ennis (neighbor of Stazie Jurcik), Vlasta (Polly) Getchell (sister of Rose Bednar's), Mrs. Getchell is from Vtica, Michigan. Other guests were Agnes Macal of Cameron, Texas (sister of Ludmila Nesuda), and Marie Szenasy of Rice, Texas (a former neighbor of Wilma Jelinek).

After the secretarial minutes were read and the treasurer's report made, our Sunshine Lady Libbie Wisniewski made a report on July birthdays and wishes went out to Hattie Tekar, Rose Mynarcik, Antonio Novak, Annastazie Jurcik, Annie Novak, Mary Vrla, Agnes Janecka and Mary Sill. Libbie also made a report on membership and said we had sixty-nine members and also our deceased members are well'remembered. She also said Helen Jaresh and Mary Kopecek were on the sick list; so get well ladies, "a ne stonat" you are missed at the meetings.

A nice quilt was quilted for Agnes Janecka. Our next meeting for August 9, 1984, the Krouzek quilt is scheduled for quilting. The top was pieced by Olga Ewing and is a real pretty one. "Good job, Olga" and all the ones you did before. There are some more of you talented with piecing fabric and harmonizing all those colors and the Krouzek is real grateful to you for all your good work.

The door prizes were furnished by the Krouzek, namely, Vojta Janicek and Agnes Houdek. These were won

by Betty Houdek, Wilma Jelinek and Ella Zmolek.

Two of the guests joined the Krouzek. They were Mary Patak and Marie Szenasy. Welcome to you both, come regular.

From the District Youth Counselors IMPORTANT INFORMATION ON DISTRICT II CAMP TO ALL LEADERS, CHAPERONES AND CAMPERS: Our camp will begin Friday, July 27 for the teenage group in ages 12 through 16; this group of youngsters and their chaperones are to arrive at camp between 10 and 10:30 a.m., July 27. This teenage group of youth members will go home Monday, July 30th about 11 a.m.

The Junior camp group (6-12) of children for District II will arrive at camp Monday, July 30th at about 10 a.m. and are scheduled to leave Thursday, August 2nd at 11 a.m.

At camp the first activity for the teenagers is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. Friday and will continue until Monday morning at which time camp will be over with for this teenage group, and the junior group will arrive.

12. Comfortable shoes (2 or 3 pairs are desirable) because you will walk and play quite a bit. (1 pair of old tennis shoes for canoeing) 13. Camera (if desired) 14. Suntan lotion or bug repellent (optional) 15. Tennis racquet (if you wish to play tennis), balls furnished by the district 16. Stereo records (optional) or some favorite dance records 17. Some money for extra soda pop (there will be morning refreshments served by the camp) Our schedule includes swimming, canoeing, horseback riding, crafts, some hiking, outdoor and indoorgames of many varieties, also softball, and parties are planned for each night.

We will have flag ceremonies twice daily , and there should be a patriotic song or a poem in addition to the pledge. Each club will have one of these ceremonies for each group, so plan what you will do.

Table grace will also be given by the youth members at each meal.

The shortest way to get to Camp Val Verde is to take Hwy. 36 West out of Temple, go about 6 miles, take Hwy. 317 to the right, toward Moody and go straight through Moody and to McGregor, go to the second red light in McGregor and turn right; this will be Hwy. 84 heading east toward Waco, go about '8 miles to the Val Verde exit to the left, follow that road and when you come to a “T" turn right and then take the second road to the left and that takes you into camp. Stop at the flag pole for further instructions.

It seems that I am running out of time this year trying to get this in the Vestnik, so I hope you will come to camp and see what else was planned this last week.

The schedule planned for this year will be similar to last year's for the junior category since we will have to divide them into five groups and plan to give them a little time to rest during noon; if it will be too hot, we may have to slow down our activities.

We certainly hope all of you, who sent in applications, will be able to attend because we are having a place reserved for you in your group and your cabin and we have plans to have a great camp.

ATTENTION DISTRICT II CAMPERS The final details of camp are being finished and everything seems that we will have a very good camp. We plan to have a good staff of young people who will help us make it more „enjoyable. We are supposed to have a man from the Zoo to bring some animals and a few surprises. The reason they are surprises is that they may not all come true. They are being worked on.

We will again have swimming, crafts, horseback riding, archery, softball and volleyball. For tennis you must bring your own racket, ball furnished. Washer and horseshoe pitch games will again be set-up.

Good meals, parties and games, dancing and a penny carnival for the junior group are planned.

The groups are well divided this year at about 70 to each group so that will be more equally divided.

We are promising you a lot of activities and please come with a smiling face and we will have a great time Everything looks good and it seems that we should have the best camp we ever had. Hope you are there!

The fall District II meeting is also being planned and we want to see all of you there. This will be Sunday, August 19th at 2 p.m. in Round Rock at Lodge 187. Bowling, dancing and free supper is planned for all District II members. (The music will be by Eddie Ray & The Polka Dots).

DISTRICT V YAD RESULTS The District V Youth Achievement Day was held at SPJST Lodge 88, July 8th, 1984.

The day started at 11:30 a.m. with a delicious baked chicken dinner with all the trimmings.

At 1 p.m. DYC Dorothy Pflughaupt began the program with the presentation of the colors by District V Flag Bearer Jeff Barcak and Lodge 88 Flag Bearer Vincent Hegwood. She then introduced Lodge 88 President Jerry Ermis who welcomed the members and guests.

COTTONWOOD YOUTH CLUB ACTIVITIES

State YAD and Royalty August 12th at the Convention Center at 3303 North 3rd Street in Temple. (The location for State YAD/Royalty was changed recently, so please remember this new location.)

The Youth Club of Lodge 6 held their meeting at 8:30 p.m. Friday, July 6th with a fair attendance.

They had their swimming party July 13th at the West Playdium, they also had fried chicken with trimmings plus drinks which everyone enjoyed immensely.

Money and items were donated to charities and needy groups by Lodge 6 Youth Club members.

Our annual lodge picnic was held Sunday, July 15th. The Youth Club was in charge of Bingo, cake walk, duck pond and dunken "Sam". We did real well and I wish to thank all the youth members, lodge members, other interested persons for helping us, also to all of those who donated cakes for cake walk and to Mr. and Mrs. Kotch for the use of tents.

District III camp will be held July 23, 24 25 and 26 at Val Verde and our lodge planned to have the game after supper, July 23rd.

Birthday celebrants in July are James Hromadka Jr. and Melissa Mynar. Shirley Dobecka brought the cake, and Kevin Dobecka will bring the cake in August.

The next meeting will be held August 10th so don't forget. There will be a paper drive at Tours Church for the CYO, remember to gather your papers because our Youth Club will donate the paper to their CYO. I will see you all Friday.

Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club attended the District VI tour to Houston July 12th. We visited many different places in Houston. First, we went to NASA, then we ate our lunch on the grounds of the "Battleship Texas" and toured it.

Afterwards, we toured the San Jacinto Monument. Then, we visited a planetarium and, lastly, we went to Hermann Park Zoo. We will be having our next monthly meeting August 5 at 4:30 p.m. at the American Legion; this is a family-affair and the members' families are invited. Everyone can swim anytime before the meeting at the pool.

For craft we did Panda bear hangings which we had to take home to finish.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the members of Lodge 133 San Antonio, Texas wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed brother EDWARD LUKASIK, age 76, who passed away July 11, 1984.

Brother Lukasik's parents immigrated from Czechoslovakia in the late 1800's and met when they arrived in Galveston. His parents settled in Moulton, Lavaca County, Texas, a Czechoslovakian community where Brother Lukasik was born and reared. The family later moved to George West and in the late 19211s- he served'in the 12tli

In 1927, Brother Edward Lukasik and his brother built the first monoplane in Texas to succeed in flight. His brother, the late Henry and Lloyd LeMay, brother of General Curtis LeMay, (known from WW II) built the monoplane with a motorcycle engine and motorcycle wheels for landing gear, which soon crashed. They had some young guy who flew it, but he cracked it up after flying it for about a half mile. It had motorcycle wheels for landing gear and it looked similar to the way planes look now.

Brother Lukasik returned to George West when his enlistment was over and in 1933 he married Annie Gawlik. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary September 12, 1983.

During the Depression, the Lukasiks lived on the family farm and in 1938 moved to California in search of work. He had an old Page truck and he had a sort of modern day camper on the back of it. It was like something right out of "The Grapes of Wrath."

Brother Lukasik with his family eked out a living as sharecroppers and did some gold mining on the Bear River but returned to Texas the next year and settled in San Antonio. He worked as an auto mechanic at Henry's Garage until it was sold by his brother in 1965. He retired two years later. He was also one of the best farmers and mechanics.

He was a member of St. Benedict's Catholic Church. He was also active in the SPJST and Hermann Sons Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Annie Lukasik; daughter, Mae Lukasik of Pasco; sons, Ernest and Elliott Lukasik; a sister, Hilda Staglik, all of San Antonio; four brothers, Max Lukasik of Deer Park, Washington, Louis Lukasik of Denver, Colorado, Joe Lukasik and John Lukasik, both of Devine; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A funeral mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Benedict's Catholic Church with the Rev. Leo. Dolan officiating. Burial was in St. Jerome's Catholic Cemetery.

George was born February 12, 1917 in Hallettsville, to Frank Johana (Bezecny) Urbish. George attained his education in East Bernard and embalmer college. He was an embalmer for several years and later associated with the Willingham Funeral Clothiers of Gustine, Texas.

He is survived by his wife, Lillian (Petravalsky) Urbish; one son, Frank L. Urbish; two grandsons, Frankie and Shane; four sisters, Mrs. Lena Janik, Mrs. Olga (Michna) Matula of a 4 aerxIpar v Mrs- PP1P4ie

of Hallettsville, Mrs. Sophie Janak of Yoakum; two brothers, John Urbish and Fred Urbish of Hallettsville, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and four brothers.

Services for George were from the Catholic Church St. Rose of Lima, Houston, with Father Rudy Beranek officiating. He was buried April 25, from Pat Foley's Funeral Home, Houston, Texas. Interment was in the Forest Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers were his nephews.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Pat Foley's Funeral Home.

Resolution Committee: Frances Haverda Albert Lupik Anton Kelner, Jr. -SPJSTEXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 35, Elk, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed sister EVELYN RUTH STEINKE, age 49, of Marlin, who lpassed away at a Marlin Hospital, May 27th.

Services were held May 29th at Littlepage Funeral Home Chapel in Mart, with Rev. Melvin Spenn officiating. Burial was at the Mart Cemetery.

Sister Steinke was born November 30, 1934 in McLennan County. Sister Steinke was married to Felix Steinke in 1953. Sister Steinke was a seamstress.

Survivors include her husband Felix Steinke of Marlin; a son, Larry Steinke; two daughters, Sandra Box and Sharon Walker, all of Marlin; her mother, Mrs. Edd Wellbrock of Marlin; a sister, Irene Newmann of Riesel and three grandchildren.

David Andreason, their son-in-law, is an active sales representative for Lodge No. 84 and District III. There are five grandchildren, all SPJST members.

Their oldest grandson, Richard and his brother Brandon are the newly-selected District III King and Duke.

To say the least, this is a strong SPJST Family, with Brother Sid leading the way as re-elected District III director, and this year's chairman of the SPJST Convention at Corpus Christi.

We are all proud of this wonderful couple, and wish them many more happy years together.

Irma is married to Frank Klinkovsky and they have one son, Frank, Jr. and two grandchildren, Frank III and Kelli Marie. (The two grandchildren are her pride and joy.) The SPJST has truly been a family affair for Irma and Frank. Many of you know Frank as the District II District Youth Counselor, a position he has held for over 13 years.

Irma commented on the many progressive changes that have occurred in the Home Office over the years that have helped her and the other employees efficiently perform their duties. She remarked that the years have gone by too fast and it has indeed been a short 25 years.

The Supreme .Lodge and the entire Home Office staff join in congratulating Irma for the many years she has devoted to the SPJST. She has been a good employee and we hope that she will be with us for many more years.

POKLADNIK ANNIVERSARY (continued from page 1) June 30, 1984, Cyrill (Sid) and Justine Pokladnik celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a lovely dinner and dance held at the Czech Club in Dallas.

The happy couple was blessed with the attendance of 500 friends and relatives, including their original wedding party. Present at this beautiful occasion was the Bishop of Dallas, Most Reverend Thomas Tschoepe, and prior to the meal, the marriage was blessed by Rev. Msgr.

Claude Smyth, a longtime family friend.

Everyone enjoyed dancing to the Winston Barney Orchestra.

Mrs. Pokladnik, the former Justine Svoboda, and Cyrill were married June 30, 1934 at St. Patrick's Church in Dallas. The couple has two children; John, a Dallas resident and lifelong SPJST member, and Justine Marie Andreason, who is also a youth leader at Lodge. No. 84, Dallas.

Efficient Gas Ranges In these days of increasing cost, the wise consumer wants to be certain the kitchen range is energy efficient, says the American Gas Association.

Continuing research by the gas industry has led to more efficient gas ranges — most notably, those with pilotless ignition systems. In these new models, the burners are lit with electronic igniters instead of continuous burning - pilot lights. Thirty percent of the total natural, gas normally consumed for cooking is saved by eliminating the standing gas pilot light.

Many new ranges also came equipped with a convection oven, which speeds cooking time by circulating the heat around the food. In this way, less gas is consumed, resulting in lower energy bills.

Gas Association suggests following these tips: • Cook food in batches whenever possible and freeze the extra food. It is more economical and very convenient.

• Boil only the exact amount of water needed so extra time and gas are not wasted. Keep the lid on saucepans to trap heat. Make sure the burner is not turned up too high. A too-high flame will only waste natural gas and cost money.

• Set the temperature gauge exactly when preheating the oven. An initially higher setting gains nothing, but consumes more gas and money.

New gas ranges are available with a variety of special featums to make cooking easier and more economical.

Natural Gas For Vehicles Natural gas has been used successfully as a transportation fuel for more than 40 years in countries around the world and for more than a decade in the United States, according to the American Gas Association.

Natural gas is a safe vehicular fuel based on millions of miles of test driving. The containers used to store natural gas on a vehicle are stronger than typical gasoline tanks.

Also, natural gas is considerably less dense than air; therefore, natural gas tends to rise and disperse in open spaces more readily than gasoline. And the auto-ignition temperature of natural gas is higher than that of gasoline.

Using coynpressed natural gas in natural gas vehicles (NGVs) is emerging as a practical solution for fueling

fleets economically while helping to reduce imports of foreign oil. Besides the saving on fuel, NGVs offer easy starting, a longer engine life and less frequent oil and spark plug changes, since natural gas is an inherently cleaner fuel thaftgasoline.

When natural gas is used as a fuel for fleet vehicles, it costs approximately twothirds as much as gasoline, making natural gas the least expensive motor fuel on the road.

Overall, natural gas costs the equivalent of approximately 80 cents per gallon of gasoline when used for transportation purposes. In fleet use, the saving of converting to natural gas and constructing a fueling station can be offset in one-to-three years. .The cost of conversion is approximately $1550 per vehicle.

Consumers Can Select Efficient Appliances

Cicchetti—Fennell Wedding Cindy Fennell and Greg Cicchetti were united in marriage on June 2, 1984 at Terrace United Methodist Church in Houston, Texas. Cindy attended the University of Texas in Austin and Greg is a graduate of Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. They built a new home in Houston and will make their home there. The couple honeymooned in the Bahamas and New York.

Consumers faced with the cost of replacing a horneheating or air cooling system should select the most efficient and cost-effective system, according to the American Gas Association.

Heating equipment has changed significantly in the past several years. Improved pulse combustion, recuperative cells, induced draft, heat exchanger design, power venting and pilotless ignition are just a few of the energy saving features available with natural gas heating systems, the A.G.A. says.

Some of these new gas furnaces have Department of Energy efficiency ratings of more than 90 percent.

When shopping for homeheating or air cooling systems, check for the federally required Energy Guide or fact sheet available from your appliance dealer. This information will provide energy efficiency ratings and allow consumers to compare estimated annual operating costs.

Most new gas furnaces have automatic vent dampers which prevent warm air from escaping when the furnace is ,off. When the thermostat calls for heat and the furnace goes on, the damper opens.

When the furnace shuts off, the damper closes, keeping the warm air from escaping.

Since space cools off at a slower rate, the thermostat "calls" for heat less often.

Most new gas furnaces also feature intermittent ignition systems instead of wasteful continuously burning pilot lights. With intermittent ignition, a tiny electrical spark jumps across a gap to ignite the pilot and then the furnace.

And only a minute amount of energy is needed.

New gas furnaces with vent dampers and intermittent ignition can save consumers as much as $2924 in lifetime operating costs. The same amount of space can be heated with 20 percent less gas as quickly, cleanly and dependably as before.

You remember that in your study of English that a pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun. In Czech, there are 7 types of pronouns.

1. Personal: jo., ty, on, ona, oni, ony, my, and vy.

2. Possessive: milj, tvuj, jeho, jeji, nil, vas, etc.

3. Demonstrative: kdo? co? kter'? jak'? ei?

3. Demonstrative: ten, ta, to, tento, tato, toto, onen, ona, ono.

4. Interrogative: kdo? co? kter'? jak'? ei?

5. Relative: kter', jen'Z (who, which, that ...), kdo, co.

6. Indefinite: Nekdo, nekterk, nejakk, kdo-si, co-si; quantitative pronouns: kaidk, vAechen; sam, sama, samo, t'2, tai, tet latter all expressing identity.

7. Negative: Nikdo, nic, iadnSt. ***

1. Personal pronouns: the longer forms — mne, mne, tebe, tobe — are used in emphasis and after prepositions. The shorter Forms — mi, me, te, ti—are used when no stress is needed, and are used AFTER the stressed word.

There is a special REFLEXIVE pronoun, SE for all 3 persons, singular and plural. EX: <TA se m'ji. On se m'je. My se mheme.

(Let us note here an important spelling rule: When the masculine sex ONLY is involved, the pronoun is oni. When both sexes are involved, the pronoun is still oni.

When only the female sex is involved, the pronoun is ONY. Modifying adjectives and verbs must agree with these endings. Ex.: Zeny donesly; Chlapi donesli; v§ichni (both sexes) donesli.

After prepositions, of course, the j becomes 11—do neho, k nemu, s ni, s nimi, etc.

2. Possessive pronouns: correspond to the personal pronouns. For the 1st person singular, the possessive pronoun is muj (ma, me) and plural: na.§. For the 2nd person singular, it is tviij (tva, tve)—plural (vase).

For the 3rd person singular, masculine and neuter, the possessive pronoun is jeho, which remains invariable; for the 3rd person singular feminine, it is jeji; for the 2nd person plural, it is jejich, for all 3 genders. It also remains invariable.

3. Demonstrative pronouns: ten, ta, to, tento, tenhle. Colloquially, tamten or tamhle is used for "onen" (yonder, that one). The gender of course, determines which you use.

4. Interrogative pronouns: Kdo, Koho, Komu, o kom, 14m; co, eeho, eemu, o eem, elm? pro co, pros, nae, zae.

5. Relative pronouns: Kdo — he who.

Co — that which . . . Dojdeme k tomu, o eem jsem chtel mluvit. Co is also used colloquially, as is: Od te doby, co ...2 Lidi, co tam byli Jeni is used mostly in literary style; in speech it is replaced by "kter'" — instead of mui, jeho znam, we say mu2, ktereho znam.

6. Indefinite pronouns: nekdo, nekterk, nejakk, nekde, 'lady; the suffix si: kdo-si co-si, kde-si, kdy-si, ei-si; also the suffix-koli: kdokoli, cokoli, jakkkoli, kter'koli; also the prefix lee: lec-kdo.

Kaidk may be used only with countable objects; vkchen for uncountable objects. In the plural, viichni does duty for both countables and uncountables. Ex.: kaidSr elovek, kaida iena, kaide (levee. v§ichni lide, vkchny ieny, vkchny chleby, vkchna deveata.

Sam means "alone": byl jsem tam sam.

Samk, sama, same, are used to express an idea of fullness or 'richness: stromy byly sam' kvet; byli tam sami cizinci; na samem konci; u sameho okna.

7. Negative pronouns: if the prefix ni — is added to the personal pronouns, they are turned into negative pronouns ni-kdo, nic. From kter', jak', the negative pronoun sioxink is used before nouns: iadriST, elovek, 2adna, Z'ena, etc.

Energy Saving Tips At home, set the furnace thermostat at 65 degrees in winter and at least five degrees lower when sleeping or away. But higher heating temperatures are recommended for places with the sick, elderly or with infants. In summer, set the air conditioner thermostat at 78 degrees.

A water heater is a major energy user. Try a lower thermostat setting. Install water flow restrictions in showers and faucets - they cut hot water use without affecting family comfort. And when replacing a water heater, choose an energy efficient model.
