Dear Members and Friends: I want to thank the District II delegates and members for the support and friendship you all gave me at the XXIV Convention in Corpus Christi by electing me as your District II director.

I will be available for constructive comments for the betterment of our Society and hope to meet many of you members throughout the state during my term.

With the 1984 Convention behind us it seems that the lodges and the membership have settled down to more or less normal routine business.

For a month or so now it seems that our mail has been very light and late. It was not until this week that more members have returned to Writing weekly as they did previously.

Some of this was probably due to the fact that some were on vacation and, of course, some had to somewhat recuperate from the "convention doldrums."

In this connection, this editor requests that you mail early because we are receiving too many of your letters as late as Friday and Saturday. We try to get as much of the Friday's mail as possible into the paper, however, it causes a hardship on the type-setters if it is brought in Friday morning and handed to them.

And, of course, Saturday's mail never gets in until the following issue, so please remember to mail your letters as early as possible.

The convention delegates accepted the Bylaw Committee's recommendation that the newlyelected officers in the Supreme Lodge would take their office duties July 1st, 1984; that is what happened this past week when the Supreme Lodge had its first quarterly meeting after the 24th Convention. The entire SL body met and as the bylaws decree, Brother Howard Leshikar assumed his duties as President effective July 1st. In the SL meeting, they elected a chairman and a vice chairman of the Board of Directors; District III Director Sid Pokladnik was nominated and elected chairman of the board, and District V Director Louis Harms was nominated and elected vice chairman of the board for the remainder of 1984. It is the editor's understanding that the nominations were made by, the other directors of the Supreme Lodge and the entire Supreme Lodge (directors and officers) elected the two brothers to serve.

It is also the editor's understanding that the transition from the past administration to the new one is working smoothly, and, therefore, the SPJST is, once again, moving forward after a lull during the convention. We all know that changes take time and we know that in due course everything will fall into place and probably much to our satisfaction.

If this editor understands correctly, there were two things that were considered and they are for the improvements of relations between the Supreme Lodge and the lodges and membership.

One was that a 1981 directive that had been acted upon previously which more or less restricted the visiting of lodges and districts by Supreme Lodge officers was reconsidered and rescinded which is absolutely an improvement in Public

Relations between lodges/members and Supreme Lodge.

The other was that they (SL) are getting rates on a liability insurance that would cover all the lodges concerning liability, which would take a great financial load off the local lodges. Let us hope that they find that it can be done at a reasonable rate of payments for that insurance. We will have more to say in the future when we have more complete information from the proper sources. ***

Sunday, July 8th the editor attended the District II Youth Achievement Day at Lodge 29, Taylor. It was a very nice, wellattended District II YAD and everybody seemed to enjoy the day's activities. A fine group of talent was presented and, of course, crafts were very bountiful and we certainly need to compliment our youth members on their efforts; we want to encourage them to continue in their work.

Your editor was pleasantly surprised to see five king and eight queen contestants present to perform their talents and they were all well-versed on their speech presentations. This editor remarked to Brother Howard Leshikar, "I would not want to be a judge in this contest." Brother Leshikar agreed.

District II Youth Counselor Frank Klinkovsky certainly is to be complimented on his well-arranged and productive YAD; you will find his report in this issue. (The YAD black/ white pictures will be published as soon as they will be developed.)

Lodge 74 from Lovelady indeed has a very active youth club; other lodges in District II likewise and, again, Lodge 74 was successful in having someone represent them as king at the State competition.

The outgoing District II King Joe Giarrusso of Round Rock and Queen Sharma Patterson (who is also the reigning State Queen) of Seaton participated nicely during the YAD program and relinquished their roles to the incoming crowning royalty: King Scott Listiak of Crockett-Lovelady area and Queen Tessa Mikulencak of Granger, who will compete in the Royalty competition Sunday, August 12 in conjunction with the talent, l3eseda circles presentation and arts/crafts at Temple High School. Brothers and Sisters, remember, that all of these activities were combined for one occasion at the State Youth Achievement Day when all seven district youth achievers will challenge each other in four-age categories. We plan to run 'a map of the City of Temple in the Vestnik, especially for those who are participating for the first time. ***

Lodge 183, Mid-Cities at Arlington has announced their date of their Grand Opening and Dedication of the new lodge home building; the date was set for Saturday, October 20th, therefore, we suggest many of you set aside this date and plan to be present at their festivities. Brother Norman Kneschk is advising that there will be more information forthcoming. It's good news because their membership has been waiting a long time for the grand opening. Let us all give them our brotherly support

Special Features Red Ranger Was Named By Cigar Drummer

CIGAR WAS NAMED AFTER REZNICEK BABY

Red Ranger, located between Zabcikville and Rogers, on FM 437, has a historical marker dedicated to its founder, the late Frank Reznicek (1879-1911).

The marker was donated by descendants of Frank and Veronica (Manak) Reznicek, and it is located on FM 437.

A site for a home and store was chosen by Mr. Reznicek near the community's one-room school. The property was on the Joe Giestman farm (now the Herbert and the late Dory Schwertner faultily land), and was leased for a home4d store.

In the Fall of 1908 Reznicek, wife and three small children moved from their farm into the new home and the store had its beginning.

No name was used, so several settlers gathered to make their suggestions. A cigar salesman happened in on the discussion and he suggested the name Red Ranger as most of the houses in the community were painted the same colors as their barns, red ... but the settlers were trying to come up with a name that rhymed with Frank.

The cigar drummer still wanted it named Red Ranger, so he made a deal with Mr. Reznicek ... he would name a cigar after his son, Rymund, and would put the baby's picture on

the box. That swayed the deal and the name has stuck, and the picture of Rymund (Raymond) was printed on the inside of the boxes of cigars.

Dubina Dedicated. State Historical Marker

One of these boxes is a treasured keepsake of Mrs. Will Lesikar of Fort Worth. She is the daughter of the late Joe Fojtasek who was a salesman for Southwestern Life Insurance, and he kept all his insurance papers in the cigar box.

The Reznicek family had bad happenings, with the death of the father in 1911. His wife Veronica, not able to run the store and raise a family, turned the business over to her brother William Manak. He later sold it to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Marek, and it was later sold to the Henry Jakubiks.

He operated the store until the death of his wife (the former Anna Lesikar). He sold it to R. J. Marek and wife, Louise. Mr. Joe Fabian and later Mr. Emmett Vanicek also had a blacksmith shop where they did repair work for the farmers.

Ninety-five-year-old John Zabcik is one of the community's eldest, and he loves to talk about it. Mr. Zabcik now lives in Temple's Golden Heritage Home.

Senator John Tower and Congressman Bill Patman addressed the gathering Sunday as the community of Dubina was dedicated a historical marker which notes it as the first entirely Czech settlement in Texas. It was held in conjunction with the Dubina Parish picnic. Edward Janecka of Weimar gave a brief history of the community and Jack Montgomery, Weimar postmaster introduced Tower. Tower was no stranger to Dubina having force landed an aircraft on the rural roads in the area years before. He closed in Czech with, "Ji, vas mam rad," I love you people.

The Community of Dubina was officially dedicating a historical marker which notes it as the first settlement in Texas founded entirely by Czech.Moravians.

Results From Lodge 47, Seaton Meeting Dear Members and Friends: Alfred Klusacek, vice president, called the meeting to order at 2 p.m.

Sunday, July 1st. President Pechal took this opportunity to sit back and enjoy the meeting.

Woodrow Marek and J. D. Chiapek led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was observed in memory of deceased Sisters Angeline Koprivaand Agnes Bartek. Our sincere sympathy to both families in their time of grief.

Reported on the sick list were: Evelyn Gebala (who is back at work), Lucille Chaloupka, Albina Dueser, Albert Mihatsch, John Jakubec, Bill Kotrla, and Torn Merka. We wish all of you a speedy recovery.

Visitors were Ann Balusek, Wesley and Vallie Tupa and Jerry Valchar. We are always happy to have visitors and do come again!

New members accepted into our membership were Edward J. Coufal, Randy E. Embrey, Amber A Carlton, Vincent Dean Brown and Adam Michael Dohnalik.

Correspondence consisted of a thank-you note from Thelma Hrncir, thanking everyone for the friends she acquired during her campaign for president; thank-you note from Mrs. John Jakubec for get-well card sent to John and reporting he is now in a nursing home and thank-you note for a corsage, cake and ten-year pin from Annie Jakubec.

All officers and chairpersons were present, with the exception of the youth leader, and all gave their reports. All, but 2 delegates to the XXIV convention, were present and they all gave brief reports on the developments at the convention.

Board minutes were read by Dorothy F'echal in the absence of Vallie Zavodny, board secretary.

Jerry Valchar from Lodge 87 and newly-elected District II Finance Committee member also gave a brief report about the convention as did Ruby L. Bolton, PublicStion Committee member.

The Youth Club had their meeting Monday, July 2, so there was no youth report.

Birthdays celebrated in July are Willie E. Kohutek, Della Mares, Joe Sefcik, Charles Sirney and Frank Shenkir (my dad who is 88 years old and still'likes to go fishing).

We only had one wedding anniversary, this month: Jerry and Anna Chupik. Happy anniversary to you!

Door prize winners were Anton Motl and Judy Sirney. The meeting was followed by "Hppy Hour" and lunch. J. D. and Vallie Chlapek, kitchen chairpersons for June thanked everyone for the delicious cakes brought by the ladies.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, August 5 at 2 p.m.; see you then.

After the meal all are invited to enjoy the social hour of domino game, etc.

66, Waco May & June Meetings

Lodge

Due to short time span between our May and June meetings, I have combined the two reports.

Both meetings were called to order at 2:30 p.m. At the May meetings the flags were presented

by Jamie and Chris Yates with Donha Stanislav leading the pledge.

In June, Chris Owens and Bill Warren presented the flags, with the pledge led by Janice Stanislay.

There was a moment for silent prayer at both meetings for our deceased members, Sharon (Engelke) Herring and Monroe Janke.

All officers were present at the May meeting, with Johnnie Gaidusek, president, absent at the June meeting.

Guests present at the May meeting were Thelma Hrncir of District VII, Brother Rudy Zalman and Sister Joyce from Wisconsin.

Minutes from both meetings were read and approved.

New members for both months were Kirby W. Matthews, Lisa S. Shirley, Marion H. Kwasnica, Ronnie L. Waters, David Gaskamp, Luther J. Hern, Jackie Hern and Gilbert F. Marek.

Correspondence was read by Sister Pruitt from the Engelke and Herring families, Father B. J. Zientek, Czech Heritage Society and Thelma Hrncir, State Project CoOrdinator for Dept. of Human Resources.

The minutes from the Board meetings were read.

At our May meeting thank you's went to: Brothers Orsag, Nieswinger, Locke and the Board of Trustees for putting up the new sign for Linden Hall. Thanks also was given to Brother Mueller for the use of his post hole digger.

The Youth Club report was given

by Kay Owens, youth leader. The children are still collecting aluminum cans, coupons and labels.

Everyone was getting ready for YAD to be, held July 1st in Fort Worth. Janice Stanislav, our queen contestant, read her speech before the members. Her duchess is Katherine Warren. The youth club went to the movies to see Indiana Jones in "The Temple of Doom," June 25th.

Sister Shilling gave the Entertainment Committee report. There

was a drawing for both Mother's Day and Father's Day. Flower arrangements were made by Mary Langlotz and a pillow by Sister Shilling. For the July meeting bologna, cheese and crackers will be served. The ladies are asked to bring desserts.

Get-well cards were sent to: Brothers Alfred Pankonien, Otto Harms, Wesley Martin, Little Steven F'ankonien and Jim Tidwell and Sisters Chudej, Beanie Kacie and Little Kimberly Schroeder.

Sympathy cards went to the Engelke familly, Herring family, Mrs. Henry Eberhardt and the Robert Kreder family.

Sister Parma gave her report for the Trust Fund. Donations were received from the Bingo Fund, Brother and Sister Bennie Engelke, Brother and Sister Pauling, Brother and Sister Otto Harms, Youth Club, Brother and Sister Johnnie Gaidusek, also Mary Langlotz.

Our Welfare Committee report was given by Sister Jeanette Smith.

Thank you's were read from Mrs. Lewis at M.D. Anderson Hospital, the Tim Grams family, Father B. J. Zientek, and the Waco Lighthouse for Blind. Donations at our June meeting were made to the March of Dimes, Child Abuse Center and Jeff Warhol.

A Resolution of Sympathy was read by Sister Gladys Yates in memory of Sharon Herring at our May meeting.

The audit report was given by Brother Shilling. Everything was in order.

Checks were presented by Sister Engelke to members present.

Mother's Day prize winners for our May meeting were 2nd runnerup — Kay Owens, 1st runner-up — Ruby Orsag, and "Mother of Year"— Bonnie Pruitt. Sophie Leshikar received a beautiful pillow for being a good mother. The Youth Club presented the following with a bouquet of carnations: Leona Nors, Mary Langlotz, Rose Galler, Mary Urbanek, Marcella Kucera, Hilda Grams, Matilda Hanus, Bertha Verankamp, Anna Vernetti, Mary Jaska and Madeline Webb. Also, Themla Niekamp, Bertha Newmann, Sophie Leshikar, Annie Harms, Georgia Kofnovec and Dorothy Shilling. Everyone was pleased.

A special tribute was made by the Youth Club to its leader, Sister Kay Owens.

In June the Fathers were honored. Walter Grams was 2nd runner-up, Frank Kofnovec, 1st runner-up and Bennie Engelke was "Father of the Year". The Youth Club gave the following gifts: George Shilling, Ray Orsag, Emil Hanus, Frank Parma, Weldon Galler, Jim Locke, Bill Cox, Daniel Nors and George Trefny.

Door prize winners were Tim Urbanek and Kay Owens.

Birthdays for the month of May were Emil Hanus, Leslie Dunagan, Sophie Leshikar, James Neslony, Alisha Neslony and Elma Silvers.

Members with birthdays in June were Darlene Engelke, Ashley Locke, Sue Pauling and Larry Yates.

News From Lodge 74, Lovelady Our regular lodge meeting was held at 7:30 p.m. July 9th. We had twenty-six in attendance. All reports were read and approved.

The big news of the evening was all the awards won at District II YAD Sunday, July 8th, by our Youth Club.

In Royalty Competition: Scott Listiak won King and Matt West is the Duke.

Jennifer West was 1st runner-up for Queen and her Duchess was Sherry Michka.

In addition there were so many other awards I won't mention them in my letter. They will be printed though, so watch for them in the Vestnik.

We are so proud of our young folks, their leaders, and parents for bringing these honors back to Lodge 74; to show our appreciation for their hard work in achieving these goals Lodge 74 presented King Scott Listiak and Duke Matt West with an ID bracelet and Queen Jennifer West and Duchess Sherry Michka with an add-a-bead necklace.

After our President James Wilcox installed the new officers of the youth club, everyone enjoyed refreshments with a cake made for the youth members.

The club members will be selling tickets on a box of groceries to be given away August 4th, so, members, buy your tickets and support your youth club!

No. 88 Monthly Meeting Lodge

Monday, July 9th, the regular monthly meeting of Lodge No. 88 was attended by 125 members. The Convention is now over and we can settle back into the routine of local Lodge functions and activities.

President Ermis reported on the events of our Homecoming Day, combined with the usual Splash Day, held June 3rd. The usual financial reports by the officers and committee chairmen proved that we had a great month in June.

Another Blue Room party is scheduled for August 26th, providing dining, drinks and dancing for the usual low cost of $10.00.

Music will be provided by the Henry Tannenberger Orchestra.

We should all be proud of one of our delegates who not only attended the Convention in Corpus Christi, but invited four other family members and purchased for them the entire package for entertainment as provided by the Host Lodge. This was our faithful Annie Vala. Thanks, Mrs. Vala, for your support.

A discussion was again held concerning the problem of failing attendance at the Saturday night dances, and the possible causes, thereof. Members, please support your Lodge by attending these functions and you will have a good time.

Meeting For Lodge 154, Ft Worth

Dear Members and Friends: On a very hot Sunday afternoon of July 8 our meeting opened with Stacy Hubenak leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. It seemed so much more meaningful that day, being so soon after July 4th, Independence Day with so much attention being given lately to the restoration of the Statue of Liberty.

We had a visitor from Canaveral, Florida, Carol Everett, visiting with her sister Shirley and mother and father Christine and Carl Zich. Our Vice President John Paprskar was absent from his post because he and his family were enroute home from Canaveral and Disneyworld. Al Kercho sat in for John.

All of the officers' reports were given and approved. Martha Durham, one of our delegates to the recent convention, gave us a condensed but newsy report of activities there. We who could not go enjoyed this accounting of events. Albert Kubala was applauded for his election as substitute director for Sid Pokladnick, director of District III. Our Youth Leader Gordon Hubenak told us that the young folks enjoyed a trip to Six Flags and that the children did well at the YAD at Lodge 154 on July 1st.

Several from our lodge won awards for their entries but I failed to get all the names. Perhaps one of them will send a report to the Youth Section of the Vestnik.

Lillie Matusevich has now been released from the hospital in San Antonio and is at the Four Seasons Nursing Center on Babcock Road there. She wishes to thank all of her friends who sent her get-well cards and flowers while she was in the hospital. Several other members were hospitalized locally, Charlie Botik, Scott Lackey, Terry Saenz, Sandra Hubenak, Mary Chaloupka and Minnie Tatarevich who was moved from the hospital to the Bishop Davies Nursing Home in . Hurst, Texas. Helen Kubala had been ill at home but was able to attend Sunday's meeting. She was on the Dinner Committee for the day with Liz Howard, but her daughter Sherry and son-in-law Mike Watkins did a good job as alternates.

We learned of the marriage of our member Cynthia Teems, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. (Eldora Praskicka) Teems, and granddaughter of Ella Praskicka. She is also the grandniece of Bennie Hundle and Minnie Ruzicka.

Richard and Raymond Hubenak have taken up new residence at 7333 Wexford Court in North Richland Hills. Hope you both enjoy the new place.

We would like to acknowledge a donation given to our lodge by Edward Johnnie in memory of his wife, Juanita.

A little past 3:30 p.m. Evelyn Spacek made a motion for adjournment and it was quickly seconded and everyone spent a while visiting with each other and partaking of -a good meal. See you in August.

Dear Members and Friends: We hope everyone arrived home safely from the convention. Lodge 79, Corpus Christi were wonderful hosts.

Our meeting Sunday was called to order by our vice president, Brother Don Steinman, then our president, Brother Jerry Milan arrived.

The Pledge of Allegiance was said b3, all present. The members stood for a moment of silent prayer for our departed Sister Pauline Kubick.

All the reports were approved as read.

Congratulations were extended to Sister Mary Renfro who was honored with the top sales representatives at the Convention and Brother Jerry Milan who was elected for District III By-law Committee.

The YAD was discussed which we enjoyed hosting, and we congratulate all the youth who participated. We enjoyed having our newly-elected president Brother Howard Leshikar and family in our midst. Everyone enjoyed meeting and visiting with them.

Sister Pavey reported on all the cards that were sent.

We had several members in the hospital, namely, Melanie Mason, Lori Steinman and Emil Milan.

Others on the sick list were Sister Anna Johnson who had quite extensive foot surgery, and our young member Kira Christopher has been ill for a while. We were sorry to hear that Sister Helen Kubala of Lodge 92 was also on the sick list; so to you all, "Get well soon!"

We extend our sincere sympathy to the families of Sister Pauline Kubick who passed away Sunday, June 17 and to Brother Johnny Stoeppelman on the loss of his stepfather, Chick Sales, and Sisters Mary NeSmith and Albina Kuban (Lodge 92) on the loss of their brother, Henry Novak of Seymour, Texas. May they rest in eternal peace.

Brothers Emil and Jerry and Sister Henrietta Milan will be leaving June 14 to join Rome Milan who has been working the last few weeks with the Olympics in Los Angeles, California (and heard he is having a wonderful time). They will work for a month. Brothers and Sisters, Bobby and Carolyn Cleveland and Darrell and Gaye Williams will join them later.

Brother Emil and Sister Frances Mamula and daughter, Missy, are here from South Bend, Indiana visiting all the Milan family. Their son, Mark, and wife, Annie, and her brother from Oklahoma City were here over the weekend for a big celebration for Brother Bill Renfro's 69th birthday; glad he is feeling a lot better.

For Child Abuse Program

Benefit

The Harris County Children's Protective Services, Child Abuse Program, will benefit from a Country & Western extravaganza put on by the SPJST Lodge No. 172 at 3609 Preston, Pasadena, Sunday, August 5, 1984. Ticket donations are $10.00 per person; your ticket includes 6 hours of music, dancing, prizes, and a barbecue dinner.

Judy Hay, from Harris County Child Welfare and a representative of the Pasadena Foster Parents Association, attended one of the monthly meetings of Lodge No. 172 and presented a program on child abuse, showing us the great need for money to cover all of the extra things the abused and abandoned children need as they live in foster homes. That night several months ago, the members of Lodge No. 172 decided to do a benefit to raise the needed funds. They selected Mrs. Rose Tanecka, a member of Lodge No. 172 to be Program Director of this very worthy project.

The home of the SPJST Lodge No. 172 is a beautiful and very large ballroom. It is family-oriented and is operated by the members, it is a nonprofit organization and all work is on a volunteer basis. The membership is large and growing; the members are from all walks of life, all of whom enjoy having a good time at their weekly social events, but, most of all, they enjoy helping others.

Rose Tanecka, with the help of Mr. J. Singletary, the manager of the Original River Road Boys, have organized a Country 82 Western Show, with all proceeds going to Child Welfare. All of the bands providing the music for dancing are donating their time - they are "The Original River Road Boys" starring

Leon Rausch, vocalist for the Original Texas Playboys, "Kelly Shoppa & The Amarillo Band", "Texas Brew", and "Country Motions". The members of Lodge No. 172 will prepare the barbecue dinner and donate the use of their beautiful "Grand Ballroom". The Pasadena Police are donating their time to help with the security and parking.

Anyone wishing to make a donation to the Child Abuse Program or to purchase tickets for the Dinner-Dance-Show, at $10.00 per person, may contact Rose Tanecka at 473-4174 or call the lodge at 487-3297. Please get your tickets early. Do call if you need more information on blocks of tickets.

All of you members from all over the state are invited, so mark your calendar and be there.

Plans at this time include a "Happy Hour" from 3 to 4 p.m.; dedication of the new hall from 4 to 5 p.m.; serving a meal from 5 to 9 p.m.; and the music for dancing will start at 5 p.m. and will last until 1 a.m. (Read more about it in the latter newsletters.)

Lodge 183 is now taking bids for lodge manager which includes cleanup three times a week after bingo and after one regular dance a month, to be present at the lodge for all deliveries of beer and other supplies, take care of rentals and maintenance of the lodge hall.

We have a lot of work that needs to be done to get C.E.F.T. reorganized and reactivated. I have purposely used this old letterhead stationery because on it are named the old officers and directors and as you can see, many are not living anymore.

Times have changed and we may have to change some of our goals. I plan to run off some copies of the original by-laws so that each of you will get a copy after you arrive here.

From Caldwell, take 21 East for nine miles; look to your left and you will see a twostory brick colonial home with six columns across the front - about 1000 feet from the highway - that's us! If you go to Bryan, high-six forms a Y with 21 in the north part of Bryan, take 21 West. When you cross the Brazos Rive P , look at your speedometer, about three miles out you will see the house on your right.

Polka Festival In New Braunfels For Lodge 185 Our annual Polka Fest is coming soon. This year it will be held in Eagles Hall, July 22; the music will be furnished by Hi-Toppers and the Little Fisherman both of New Braunfels. Dancing will be from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m., but our meals will begin serving at 11:30 a.m. It will consist of turkey and dressing with all the trimmings. We're hoping for a nice turnout and enjoyment for all.

The Seaton Choral Club will be on summer vacation until the 2nd Tuesday in September, but they ended the year on a strong Czech note by participating in the Pioneer Days celebration at the Mayborn Civic Center; also two of the club members, Helen and Henry Janacek, sang duets with Henry playing the accordian.

II ACHIEVEMENT DAY RESULTS

The YAD in District II was wellattended by both youths and adults.

The youth members were full of enthusiasm and they were well represented from the whole district.

There were 60 youngsters who participated in the talent and royalty contests and there were 150 entries in the arts and crafts contest. We had 5 kings and 8 queens competing in the royalty contest.

Seaton, Taylor, Cyclone, Rockdale, Granger, Elgin, Beyersville, Lovelady and Round Rock were very well-represented.

I would like to thank the youth leaders and assistants, the district officers, Director Henry Vitek, District President D. I. Bohac, and many other sisters and brothers who were so efficient in helping make our YAD such a great success.

It was through your help that made this day successful and we certainly do thank everyone. I would especially wish to thank the 7 people who did all the tabulating. Brother Henry Vitek supervised this committee. Others on the committee were John Chervenka, Curtis Young, Michale Kaiser, Albert Lange, Morris Boutwell, and Brother Willie Kohutek who is the newly-elected District II director.

The local lodge youth leaders and assistants all did their part and certainly did it well. Thank you again, one and all!

I also wish to thank the judges because they donated all of their time and we certainly do appreciate the use of their time and talents. All the members in District II wish to say thank you to Lodge 29, Taylor that was such a good host lodge and helped in many ways to make our YAD a great success. A special `thank you to the members who worked that day, in the bar and kitchen and setting up chairs, etc., also for the delicious barbecue meal they served. It took a lot of hard work to prepare the food. The members of District II enjoyed their afternoon at. Lodge 29 and we all thank them for being such good hosts once again. I want to give a big thank you to all of my leaders and assistants they all did their best and worked hard to make this day a success. Thank you to my assistant Melvin Steger and his wife Geraldine, Brother Edwin Adamek and his wife Kathryn for the extra help at the lodge, and Sister Donna and Shanna Pasemann for making the royalty banners. I will not name any others because all of you need to be recognized individually but since it was about 40 people I would be sure to leave someone out, but we know what each of you did, and it is certainly appreciated. I must than Brother Rudy Sefcik for taking pictures, and my wife Irma for her help and support. Everyone worked hard and it took so many people working together and everyone cooperated well to make this a successful YAD. I wish to thank everyone for attending and for being quiet and patient because you were a good audience.

I will start the results of the YAD with the Royalty King Contest. Our District II king winner is Scott Listiak from Lodge 74, Lovelady and his duke was Matt West, also from Lovelady. The 1st runner-up was Shawn Young of Lodge 18, Elgin with his Duke Trey Danne from Lodge 18. The queen winner was Tessa Mikulencak from Lodge 20, Granger with Duchess Vanessa David, also from Lodge 20. The 1st runner-up was Jennifer West of Lodge 74, Lovelady and her Duchess Sherry Michka, also of Lovelady.

They did perform for us and had beautiful and colorful costumes; we all enjoyed their performance and we wish them good luck at State competition.

TO ALL LEADERS, CHAPERONES AND CAMPERS: Our camp will begin Friday, July 27 for the teenage group in ages 12 through 16; this group of youngsters and their chaperones are to arrive at camp between 10 and 10:30 a.m., July 27. This teenage group of youth members will go home Monday, July 30th about 11 a.m.

The junior group (6-12) of children will arrive at camp Tuesday, July 31st at, about 10 a.m. and are scheduled to leave Thursday, August 2nd at 11 a.m.

At camp the first activity for the teenagers is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. Friday and will continue until Monday morning at which time camp will be over with for this teenage group, and the junior group will arrive.

The junior group has 100 entries, 19 adult leaders and chaperones, plus 6 staff people will make it about 125 at meal time. In the teenage group we will have 62 entries, 7 adults and 6 staff individuals for a total of 75; so they are divided much better this year but still quite a few more juniors.

Our morning break, which will include cookies and pdnch or Gaterade, will be furnished by the camp, but the afternoon break is soda pop and the children must buy their own so they should have some money for drinks.

The shortest way to get to Camp Val Verde is to take Hwy. 36 West out of Temple, go about 6 miles, take Hwy. 317 to the right, toward Moody and go straight through Moody arid to McGregor, go to the second red light in McGregor and turn right; this will be Hwy. 84 heading east toward Waco, go about 8 miles to the Val Verde exit to the left, follow tnal, road and when you come to a "T" turn right and then take the second road to the left and that takes you into camp. Stop at the flag pole for further instructions.

It seems that I am running out of time this year trying to get this in the Vestnik, so I hope you will come to camp and see what else was planned this last week.

The schedule planned for this year will be similar to last year's for the junior category since we will have to divide them into five groups and plan to give them a little time to rest during noon; if it will be too hot, we may have to slow down our activities.

We certainly hope all of you, who sent in applications, will be able to attend because we are having a place reserved for you in your group and your cabin and we have plans to have a great camp.

Let's all remember our fall District II meeting and dance, also bowling for all youth members August 19th at Lodge 187, Round Rock. More on this next week.

There will be another letter about camp next week a few additions, so please watch for them.

The junior camp will include a penny carnival so the junior group can bring their pennies for this activity.

There is an animal talk show scheduled for both groups. Plan to be there because other activities are still being planned. Don't miss out!

AT BASTROP Sixty campers from District VI completed their annual district camp at Bastrop State Park, June 25th through 28th.

The campers were divided into three groups. Junior leaders, under the direction of Marjorie Treumer (30) and Lori Henderson (40), led the workshops. The junior leaders were Jean Dorotik (30), Michael Marek (40), Michelle Srubar (30), Tammy Dybala (40), Elizabeth Adamcik (40), Kim Dornak (30), and Tim Kresta (30).

Mrs. Diann Srubar (30) taught a workshop on nature. Tim Kresta (30) led the groups on a nature hike.

Upon returning, each camper made

a leaf print and a nature arrangement on a wooden shingle from their collection. The campers showed creativity in their individual displays.

In Group I, under the leadership of Wanda Dorotik (30) and Karen Kaspar (30), consisted of the 6 to 8 age group. They were Arron Spears (32), Valerie Roye (30), Sandi Drubar (30), Lenice Kaspar (30), Kim Vacek (30), Craig Dorotik (30), Kristy Vacek (30), Craig Allan Dornak (30), Sharon Borak (40), Kendra Richardson (32), Chris Springer (32), Jennifer Kounty (32), Keri Kubala (30), Jeannie Dorotik (30), Michael Kaspar (30).

Group II, under the supervision of Frances Motl (32) and Stephanie Spears (32), included of 9 to 11 age group. They were Rebecca Sellers (30), Keith Kresta (30), Heather Spears (32), Slate Srubar (30), Stephanie Roye (30), ERic Motl (32), Wes Springer (32), Jessica Koutny (32). Danny Borak (40), Jason Motl (32), and Darren Dybala (40).

Group III, under the directions of Brenda Kresta (30) and Janet Holub (40), consisted of ages 12 to 14. They were Kristi Korenek (30), Lori Holub (40), Mary Ann Bartos (40), Janna Dornak (30), Jennifer Dluhos (30), Marcy Dorotik (30), Landis Dornak (30), Amy Kresta (30), Christopher Marek (32), Beverly Horelka (32), Pam Donalson (32), Linda Treumer (30), Charleen Mondrik (40), and Jodi Henderson (40).

The themes for the night parties consisted of a Hoedown Monday night, Halloween Tuesday night, and Celebrity night. Everyone dressed and participated accordingly.

The junior leaders really put a celebrity show Wednesday night for the campers. There were beautifully decorated people brought to the stage such as Pointer Sisters, Dolly Parton, Michael Jackson, Shirley Temple, Kenny Loggins, Sheena Easton, Madonna and the Go Gos. They looked so real that we didn't believe our eyes while they performed with their songs. An excellent job done by all.

To conclude our evening a campfire devotional was held at a camp site below the dorms.

This year the water fight was cancelled because of low water pressure.

The quiet and active games were directed by Jean Dorotik (30), Tammy Dybala (40), and Mrs. Karen Kaspar (30). The group learned many new games.

Folk dancing was led by Mrs. Janet Holub (40), Michael Marek (40), Marjorie Treumer (30), Kim Dornak (30), Elizabeth Adamcik (30), Brenda Kresta (30) and Michelle Srubar (30).

Crafts were taught by Lori Henderson (40) and Mrs. Janet Marek (40). The group worked with woods which are pre-cut wooden shapes and painting on corkwood.

Karen Kaspar served as swimming director. The group swam twice a day.

Each morning started with a short devotional, exercise (by all leaders), a short jogging trip, breakfast followed by a sing-a-long.

The junior leaders-in-training were Charlene Mondrik (40), Janna Dornak (40), Beverly Horelka (32), Pam Donalson (32), Linda Treumer (30) and Jodi Henderson (40).

Our great cooks were composed of Elsie Brdecka, Wilma Gaddis, Rose Mondrik and Georgia Henderson.

Friday at St. George Catholic Church in George West, with Father William DeAngelis, OSB, officiating. Burial was in the St. George Cemetery.

Sister Hanus was born January 5,

1920 in Cuero to Annie (Kalich) and Joseph Macha. She was a resident of Live Oak County for 25 years, and she was a housewife and a member of the St. George Altar Society.

She married Paul Hanus September 23, 1942, in Live Oak County.

Survivors include her husband, Paul Hanus of George West; one daughter, Mrs. Janice McMahon of San Antonio; two sons, David Hanus of Katy and Michael Hanus of Kingsville; one brother, William Joseph

Macha of Yoakum; four sisters, Mrs. Louise Hinus of Olmos; Mrs. Stella Trlica of Sinton; Mrs. Leona Sumbera of Victoria and Mrs. Pauline Nesloney of Annaville; and three grandchildren, Michelle Marie McMahon, James Michael McMahon and Paul Brandon Hanus.

A case is the form which shows, the function of a noun, adjective, or pronoun, in the sentence, and its relation to other words in the sentence. There are seven such cases in the Czech language.

1. NOMINATIVE, or subject case: prvni pad — answers the questions: KDO — who? (is the doer of, or subjected to, some action?); CO — what? (lifeless object or event is something said about?)

Ex.: KDO tam chodi? Karel tam jde.

Here Karel is in the nom. case. Co se tam deje? Schtize se tam kona. Here schtize is in the nom. case.

2. GENETIVE Case — druhS7 pad, has a function similar to the English possessive case, (my friend's house, or the house of my friend). The genitive has acquired a wide range of meaning besides the basic sense of BELONGING. It answers the questions: Ceho? of what?, Ci? whose?

Ex.: Z eeho je to vStrabene Ze ieleza a z litiny.

Ci je to pueik? Je to pueik meho otce. (Otce, here is in the gen. case).

3. DATIVE Case — tieti pad, is primarily a case of direction marking end or result towards which an act proceeds. It is therefore used after the verbs GIVING, SENDING, SAYING, or WRITING something to someone. It answers the questions KOMU?, to whom?, and CEMU?, to what?

Ex.: Komu piS'eA? PfAu domu tatinkovi. (Tatinkovi here is in the dative case). Cemu poslouchaA Poslouchair' vysilaci stanici. (Stanici is in the dative case).

4. ACCUSATIVE, Or Direct objectcase — etvrtS7 pad; marks the receiver of the action or the thing acted upon by the subject. It answers the questions: K0110? whom?, and CO what?

Ex.: Koho's tam videl? Videl jsem tam meho pfitele. (ptitele is in the ace. case).

Co tam vid g ? Vidim moji matku. (matku is in the ace. case) 5. VOCATIVE Case —patST 'Adis used for addressing or calling to a person or a thing.

6. LOCATIVE, or prepositional — AestS7 pad; is always used with prepositions. It cannot stand alone. It expresses position in time or space. It answers the questions KDE? where?

1. The infinitive of Czech verbs ends in -t (in dictionaries you may find -ti).

With many verbs its stem (verbal base) differs from the present tense form we have been using in this course so far. The relation of the present tense form and the infinitive: -at

V lidovem podani je jalovec dokonce rostlinou darovnou, ktera ma moci nevidane: vyhanet nemoci, zapudit nepfatelskou situ, zpOsobit, aby dobytek lope pfibirval na %/Sze, a dokonce divce pfidarovat ienicha.

Ledebne nejuiivanejti dasti jalovce byly vidy plody — jalovainky, ale take jalovcove dfevo. Terapeuticke vyuiiti jalovcovych drog bylo pOvodne velmi 6iroke. Stfedoveky lekaf Otto z Mendonu y e svem slavnem herbah z XI. stoleti — „De herbarum virtuti bus" — o jalovci napf. tike:

Dnes se zasadne teto drogy neutiva jako diuretika, tedy modopudneho prostfedku, protoie draidi ledviny a navic bylo zji6teno, ie je pfili6 male rozpet" mezi davkou fediy ou a davkou 6kodlive draidivou.

Nyni se jalovdinky uplatduji v leobe nekterYch poruch traveni, zejmena tam, kde nezabiraji anebo nejsou nemocnYm sna6eny drogy s obsahem hofoin, ale pfedev6im v ledbe nekterych typO poruch latkove vskmeny, napfiklad tam, kde nachazime „opotfebovane klouby". Jde zpravidla o degene-

rativni onemocneni, souborne nazYvane deformativni artroza" (arthrosis degenerative). To g o onemocneni se projevuje nejdasteji v kloubu kolennim, kydelnim nebo ramennim. Jalovoinky totii zleptuji latkoyou vYmenu v okoli kloub0, zlepkji jejich prokrveni, dini je pruinej6i a pohyblivejti a tim vlastne sniiuji bolestivost.

Tohoto efektu ov6em nelze dosahnout jednorazovYm poutitim. Jalovec pOsobi pomalu, ale jiste, navic — vzhledem k uvedene draidivosti — musi byt da y kovan vzestupne, aby organismus byl zateiovan postupne. Uplatriuje se zde stare, ale stale platna Kneippova zasada, ie vlekle choroby se musi i dlouhodobe ledit. Samozfejme je take tfeba vzit v uvahu, ie u zastaralych phpadO, kdy jsou klouby jii znaene degenerativne zm 'eneny, prakticky nemOie dojit k Upinemu vyledeni, ale nemocnY bYva vdeanY za kahle zlepkni sveho krukeho stavu.

Jalovcovou ledebnou luiru musi schvalit lekaf po zji6teni stavu ledvin (iadne bilkoviny v protoie v pfipadech ledvinovYch chorob je tato ledba nevhodna. KUru je nejlepe zapodit v pozdnim podzimu nebo v zime, aby se pOsobenim jalovce klouby chranily pied nepfiznivymi vlivy zimniho podasi, av6ak neni to rozhodujici podminkou. Prvni den dini davka 3 x denne jednu jalovainku, dobfe rozkousat a pfipadne jette zapit tipkovym dajem. Denne se davka zvykje o 1 jalovainku v kettle davce, tedy druhy den 3 x denne dye jalovainky atd., ai po 3 x denne 21 jalovoinek. V nasledujicich dnech se opet po jedne jalovdince v kafde davce ubira, at Vire za 6 tYdn0 skondi posledni davkou, tedy 3x denne 1 jalovainku.

V ledbe travicich poruch slabeho a pfecitliv'eleho ialudku obvykle postaduje zkracena. kUra s bodem obratu na 3 x denne 14 jalovdinek.

Poulitou drogou bYva kofen, popfipade kofen s nati, lekovou formou nejeasteji odvar, pfipraveny podle beinych pravidel. Ledebna kUra spodiva v piti 2-3 sklenic odvaru denne, po dobu 6-8 tydnO. Tato kUra mule take navazovat ihned na jalovcovou kUru po jejim skondeni. Na rozdil od jalovcove kury Ize pampeli6kovou kUru podle potfeby brzy opakovat. Misto samotne pampeliSky Ize pouiivat jeji smesi s listem kopfivy a bfizy, kterou'ito smes v pomeru 2:1:1 povaiuji nektefi odbornici za Odinnej6i.

Kofen se sbira pfedev6im na podzim, fiddeji dasne na jefe, kofen s nati pak na jafe, pled rozkvetem rostliny. Drogy jsou pouze v sortimentu specializovanych lekaren, resp. prodejen ledivych rostlin.

But the Czechs who settled in Dubina were not the first Czechs in Texas, according to the Dubina Historical Commission. Prior to Dubina's beginnings all other Czechs settling in the state moved to already established towns. "The group of Czechs who found shelter from the elements under a gigantic oak tree in November, 1856 were the "first" in Texas who, started their own town," according to a release by the Dubina Commission.

From a small beginning, where the community collectively made one bale of cotton, Dubina began to grow into a cultural and business center of the region. Dubina was a stop-over place for Czechs who came to Texas and eventually grew to have a mill, gin, store and in the 1880's the Catholic Church had an enrollment of over 600 families.

Following the construction of a railroad which bypassed Dubina, many of the residents moved on. But today Dubina has a Catholic Church, hall, a restaurant and many other buildings left to be restored, as well as giant oak trees.
