SPJST Convention 1984. Most of the delegates arrrived in Corpus Christi either Saturday or Sunday and registered for the 24th Convention of our Society.

The first thing this editor must state is: the fact tht Lodge 79 Corpus Christi proved to be the most gracious, receptive and friendly hosts and very capable, also hard-working.

Personally, I would say that the convention was enjoyed by everyone from the program and entertainment side of the Convention Committee which planned the programs and the evening activities for the delegates.

We will not go into detail about the proceedings of the Convention in this issue with the exception of stating that promptly at 8:30 a.m.

Monday, June 18th, a group picture of the delegates, Supreme Lodge officers, and non-delegate committee members was taken on the steps of the Convention Center and immediately, thereafter, they proceeded to the Convention assembly hall and the convention was convened by President Nick Morris. We will be printing the proceedings of the Convention in the future issues and will not dwell too much on the proceeding of the convention at this time.

Your editor is sure that all the members are interested in the outcome of the elections for officers, legal adviser, editor, directors and committees. On the front page you will find the outcome of the elections and, at this time, we will give you the results. Of course, our members know that there were three members seeking the office of president of the SPJST. Below are the results of the first election which caused a runoff between Brother Morris and Brother Leshikar. The first ballots cast revealed Sister Thelma Hrncir received 9,429 votes; Brother Nick Morris, 12,723; and Brother Howard Leshikar, 16,364. In the runoff Brother Nick Morris received 13,657 and Brother Howard Leshikar, 24,854 which, of course, elected Brother Leshikar as the President of the SPJST Society.

The other officers, legal adviser and editor had no opposition and, therefore, were re-elected for another 4-year term.

The District Caucus results are listed below and we feel, of course, you are interested in us printing them at this time.

We will have more to say about the certain aspects, hopefully, next week.

The Convention adjourned at 8:45 p.m. Wednesday, June 20th. From this editor's standpoint, it was well conducted by Convention Chairman Sid Pokladnik and Co-Chairman Jerry Prochazka.

Sunday, June 24th, still a bit tired from the Convention, we decided to attend the District IV Youth Achievement Day (DYD) at Seymour, Texas because we had promised Sister Mary Haisler that we would attend and also take pictures of the YAD results.

We left early Sunday morning and travelled in comfort under overcast skies and saw beautiful country scenery. We arrived shortly before their program started and thoroughly enjoyed the individual and group talents, royalty competition and the many craft entries displayed for judging first, second and third places. We were, very frankly, surprised to see the large amount of entries. The first place winners will advance to the State competition August 12th at Temple High School.

District IV Youth Counselor Mary Haisler is to be complimented for her dedication to the youth and she was somewhat let down because so few lodges were represented. Sister Haisler and District IV Director Stanley Broz distributed the prizes and some of the young people came away with quite a nice sum of money for their efforts. To the youth of District IV this editor says do not just give up, make an effort because the youth program of our SPJST is there for you to take part in during each year and you are only the loser if you do not enter, so do the best you can and don't be afraid or hesitate to enter your talent or talents in these various programs.

The day's concluding portion was enjoyed visiting and socializing with all and I must say that the ladies and parents certainly do give a lot of support to their young people, and when it comes to food, they also know how to prepare special dishes for these types of affairs.

To you folks in District IV we appreciate your hospitality and the support of our youth so keep it up because you cannot lose by helping the youth.

Dear Members; Our lodge met Sunday, June 10, 1984 at the Grant Building in Hallettsville with President Frank Zabransky presiding.

The Youth Club led the members in the pledge to the U.S. flag.

President Zabransky recognized our visitors, District VII Director Thelma Hrncir, her husband and daughter.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes to the previous meeting which were approved. Correspondence followed.

Co-Youth Leader Gaynell Chudej talked about the Youth Club.

Reports were given by Treasurer Helen Zabransky and Financial Secretary Hilmer Galetka.

Director Thelma Hrncir spoke to the members on SPJST, also the concern she has for its growth and continued progress. Mrs. Hrncir and her family were well-received by the members. We enjoyed their visit and hope they come, again.

Family Day was discussed with final plans to be made at the next meeting.

Linda Mikush announced that July, August and September birthdays will be honored at the next meeting.

Refund checks were given out and the meeting adjourned. Refreshments and lunch were served and enjoyed by all.

Winners of door prizes were Adult— Albert Kahanek, Youth — Melissa Holy, and Special Father's Day Door. Prize — Anton Bollorn.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, July 8th at the Grant Building beginning at 2 p.m. July, August and September birthdays will be honored. Refreshments and lunch will be served as usual. Members are encouraged to attend.

The Czech societies of San Antonio are sponsoring an annual Czech festival Sunday, July 15, 1984 at Comanche Park No. 2 at 5600 Block Rigsby in San Antonio.

Festivities will begin with a delicious (one half) barbecue chicken with trimmings being served from 11:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. There will be plenty of Czech pastries: Kolache and strudel.

There will be rides and fun for all ages. Prizes also will be given away.

In addition to the festivities, there will be a dance from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., and then from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. by the famous Bobby Jones Orchestra of Needville playing your favorite polka, waltz and country/western music.

Come and spend an enjoyable afternoon with all of us in San Antonio.

Cottonwood Annual Picnic The SPJST Lodge 6 at Cottonwood will be having their annual picnic Sunday, July 15, 1984.

Donations for the auction, will be greatly appreciated; the items may be brought to the Cottonwood Hall or be given to a member for delivery to the hall.

Buckholts Honors 50-Year Members Dear Members: President Ann Balusek opened the regular meeting of Lodge 15 by leading the members in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Sister Balusek welcomed our two guests, Louise Stalmach and Dan Balusek, and special guests Willie and Adeline Kohutek. Brother Kohutek gave a very interesting talk. Thank you all for coming and being with us; do come, again.

Roll call showed all officers present.

The minutes, all officers' and committees' reports were approved as read.

Secretary Charlsie Svetlik read a letter from the Main Office about the new law on driving while intoxicated. After some discussion, it was passed up until the next meeting.

Leonard Marak received the $500 scholarship, for the college of his choice, donated to Buckholts High School by this lodge.

The reception and,dance for our 50-year members was a very big success. We were very proud to have Brother Jerry Mikulas, here with us to give out the 50-year pins to our honored members.

Dear Members and Friends: President Jerry Pechal called the meeting to order Sunday, June 3, 1984 at 2 p.m.

Tim Wilson and Daryl Kortis led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Special honorees at this meeting were the 1984 graduates from Rogers High School; namely, Vickie Tepera and Missy Coufal. They were seated at a specially decorated table in front and presented gifts by youth leader Rosie Craft. A cake decorated and donated by Adeline Kohutek was also presented to the honorees.

Frankie Klinkovsky gave an inspiring speech to the graduates after which all the youth club members and visitors went to their meeting and the adults continued with theirs.

All lodge officers and chairpersons were present and gave satisfactory reports.

Correspondence consisted of a letter from Thelma Hrncir thanking the lodge for participation in the Child Abuse program. Thank you notes were from the Rosie Fojtasek family, Alfred Hejl family and Jerome Green family for flowers; a thank you note from Frances Hejl for the corsage, cake and 50-year pin; a note from Henry Kabella stating that he regrets he couldn't be present to receive his 50-year pin since he is confined to his home.

Reported on the sick list were: Agnes Bartek, Frances Ondrasek, Albert Mihatsch, Leo Kahlig, Frank Janacek, Ed Naiver and Anna Marie Eichmann was left off my last month's report. We do wish all of these members a speedy recovery and may you be blessed with good health.

New members accepted into our membership were: Elizabeth Anne Sodek, Shirley Mae Norton, Joe J. Vrana, Mary Frances Cervenka, Betty J. Vrana, Elena Y. Ramirez, Phillip D. Hernandez, Terry Lynn Coufal, Karen Ruth Zavodny.

Adeline Kohutek donated a decorated cake for the Youth Club graduates in honor of deceased Sister Leah Marek. The cake for 50year pin honorees in May was donated in memory of deceased Brother Jerome Green.

133 Members Celebrate Golden Wedding

Lodge

Brother and Sister Adolph Popp of Lodge 133 in San Antonio celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Sunday, June 24th.

It was a beautiful celebration with their children at their side, their grandchildren and their many friends throughout the State of Texas; some from Kansas, and some from the State of Michigan.

The dance started at 2 p.m., dinner was served at 5 p.m., and more dancing afterwards.

While the couple sat at the wedding table, the San Antonio Choral Group, which Adolph and Agnes are members of, approached the table and sang the beautiful "V zelenem haji" (Green Grove). The club also presented them with gift certificates to Luby's, and a beautiful plaque which had the inscription as follows: "Bylo to pied 50-lety, kdyi jako dva majove kvety ruce jste si podali.

Results of Lodge 142, Houston Meeting President Mary Ann Kieschnick called our regular monthly meeting to order at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 10, 1984.

The fifty-seven members who were present along with guests stood and recited the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag. All remained standing for a few moments of silence in memory of our departed Brother Lige Ungrad.

The minutes from the previous meeting were read by the secretary.

All officers' reports were read.

Our new members are Brian Hermis, Charles Hobratsch, Mary A. Hobratsch, Phillip John Tumis, Jeremy Beiersdorfer and Kenneth Beiersdorfer.

We had two transferees from Lodge 88; namely, Lillie Bertha Volka and Emil John Volka.

Brother Robert Kieschnick made a motion to accept the new members; it was seconded by Brother Henry Linhart.

We recognized our youngest member present for a $5 prize; he was Brian Hermis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hermis, Jr., winner at this meeting. (This is a one time winner only.)

We had our District V Director Louis Hanus present in this meeting who was recognized and asked to speak. He said all he has to say to us is: "To Keep Up The Good Work."

Under old business we discussed the pending decision if we want to sell our lodge home property and relocate. The purchaser is only interested to purchase our tract if they can purchase the whole block and this depends on if our neighbors are willing to sell. Some discussion followed by the membership.

There was a motion made and seconded to appoint a committee which consists of the Lodge 142 Officers and Board of Trustees to

look into a new building site before a decision can be made, and report back to the membership within 90 days.

Our four door prizes went to: Howard Kieschnick, Ella Cieslewitz, Millie Linhart and Joyce Molnoskey.

Attendance Capsule Prize: We had a winner for $35 and it was none other than our President Mary Ann Kieschnick. Congratulations! The next prize reverts back to $5; come on out because you may be a winner.

Announcements: District V youth are to meet Wednesday, June 27, 1984 at 7 p.m. at Lodge 142; any youth over age 6 years is welcomed into this youth club. Delegates are to go to the convention at Corpus Christi, next week, beginning Monday, June 18, 1984.

The meeting adjourned at 3:10 p.m. until next meeting July 8th at 2 p.m.

Refreshments were served and everyone enjoyed the good fellowship of our fine membership. I am looking forward to seeing you all at the next meeting; come to our meeting.

Over the Memorial Day week-end, two of our lodge members jetted off to New Orleans to visit the World's Fair. Pat and Bob Schleider reported they enjoyed themselves very much. They toured the fair, cruised down the Mississippi River on a river boat and took a very informed tour of the City of New Orleans.

Lodge Donates $1,000 To Little League Academy

Dear Members: Lodge 177 of Academy meeting was called to order June 13 at 7:32 p.m. by President Louis Driska.

All officers were present.

Bereavement Chairperson Libbie Bartek was absent.

The minutes from the last meeting were read and approved.

Correspondence was then read by Recording Secretary Pat Tomastik.

A thank you from Jerry Tomastik for the flowers. (Jerry has been in the hospital twice in the last month or so and hopefully is on the road to a full recovery.) A thank you from St. Luke's for the use of old bingo equipment, also letters from District VII Director Thelma Hrncir, and Legal Adviser Sidney Kacir on selling beer to minors and additional liability insurance.

New members present were Mr. and Mrs. George Whitehead. We welcome them and come back to see us.

Visitors were Ronnie White, Susan Johnson and David Newsome, also Laverne Michalek.

Bar and kitchen reports were good. The ticket report was not so good because too many people are on vacations. I'm sure Frances Love, ticket chairperson, hopes to have a better report at the next meeting.

The youth leader reported having thirteen members and six social members. The youth will go to Six Flags July 18th.

The Board met June 6th with all members present. Charles Ramm is to recondition plumbing and bathrooms. We still have a water leak in the front entrance; hoping to remedy that problem. The board members wish to remind the workers: NO LIQUOR BEHIND THE BAR!

It was voted to remove the carpet in front entrance until the leak is found. Sam Estes will repair the leak.

It was agreed to start giving six free passes for Saturday night dances.

Financial secretary had two new members. All other reports were good.

Othen Jezek reported on the first house account and they are doing a good job.

The Auditing Committee reported that all books were in order.

Othen Jezek replaced Jerry Tomastik as a delegate to the 24th SPJST Convention.

Our Club asked the lodge to charter a bus for Six Flags trip, and the members voted to buy the youth members Six Flags tickets.

A motion was made to have a party by Alex Garcia Friday night, July 20th. Not being able to decide on what or where, a committee was appointed, so members, if you want to find out about the party you will have to come to the next meeting JULY 11th at 7:30 p.m., because I will not have time to get it in the Vestnik.

The members voted to give $1,000 to the Little River Academy Little League.

Thirty-eight members were present at the last meeting and we extend a hearty welcome to all of you and come back again, and everybody bring an extra person.

Otis Beck was replaced by Walter Jezek on the Rules and Regulations Committee.

If the State of Texas will approve the additional $947 which was made on the benefit bingo, it will be donated to the Little RiverAcademy Little League.

With no further business the meeting was adjourned at 9:55 p.m. and a chili supper was enjoyed by one and all. A social is held after every meeting now and much socializing takes place.

178, Longview-Kilgore Schedules Project Lodge

The June 10, 1984 meeting of SPJST Lodge 178 was called to order by President John Campbell.

The Pledge of Allegiance was also led by John Campbell. James Harris led the lodge motto. A moment of silence for our departed brothers and sisters was observed.

Roll call of officers showed officers absent to be 2nd Vice President Doug Kimmey, Youth Leader Rite Crossland, Sgt.-at-Arms Charles DeWitt, Flag Bearer Kathy Brown and Parliamentarian Chuck Kunkel.

The minutes from our last meeting were read. No corrections were necessary. The minutes stood approved as read.

Communications read were: a letter from Longview Boys Baseball Association in appreciation for use of the lodge, and a letter concerning the first annual Czech Heritage Festival to be held at Corpus Christi in March 1985.

The committee reports were given.

The following Wednesday night a general cleanup of the lodge will be held. The use of paper linens on tables was discussed. It was the concensus of the members present that if there would be a considerable savings to try the paper linens for three months.

Having a garage sale to raise extra money was discussed; a garage sale will be held July 6th and 7th at 1920 Tryon Road, Longview.

The items are to be taken to the sale location Thursday, July 5th or may be brought to the lodge.

Dan Brown made a motion to pay bills; it was seconded by Arthur Wiesner. Motion carried.

The meeting was adjourned by President John Campbell.

Festival In New Braunfels For Lodge 185 Polka

Our annual Polka Fest is coming soon. This year it will be held in Eagles Hall, July 22; the music will be furnished by Hi-Toppers and the Little Fisherman both of New Braunfels. Dancing will be from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m., but our meals will begin serving at 11:30 a.m. It will consist of turkey and dressing with all the trimmings. We're hoping for a nice turnout and enjoyment for all.

Thank You President Nick Morris Dear Members: In reminiscing about the 151/2 years tenure of our President Nick A. Morris, we are reminded, first of all, of the amazing growth and progress made during those years: assets increasing from 17 million to over 30 million the chartering of 14 new lodges, and the building of 12 new lodge buildings. We know that it took many to accomplish these but back of it all was the great leadership of a dedicated president that made it possible!

We are deeply indebted to President Morris for the history of SPJST from 1897 through 1980. It took four years of hard work; it was completed four months ago and will soon be printed. This history is something of which we can be very proud; it is our gift to future generations. We probaby never would have the history if President Morris would not have written it.

Two or three attempts of writing the history were made in the past, but always were given up. So it is due to the perseverance of President Morris that we will have a history of SPJST in our homes, lodges and libraries!

A few years ago the fraternal organizations were in trouble. Our state legislature wanted our sales representatives to be licensed and our tax-free status was threatened.

This indeed would have been a blow to all fraternals. President Morris appeared before the legislature and in his persuasive and dynamic manner was able to convince the legislators to give up these ideas.

The fraternal organizations are very grateful and let President Morris know how much they appreciate what he accomplished for all fraternal organizations!

We have heard and know from personal experience how eloquently President Morris performed at the funeral services for members. We Krejci's will never forget his comforting and inspiring words at the service of our dear mother.

Wherever President Morris went, he gave a great impression of our SPJST. When he gave a lecture at Lodge No. 88 before about a thousand people, other fraternal -SPJSTorganizations were present and were very impressed with his Lodge 188 Schedules abilities.

They wanted to know where we were able to find so Two Meetings capable a president. How well we The Deerest Lodge of Centerville remember that beautiful program will hold a regular lodge meeting and how proud we were of our and Executive Board meeting president!

Friendship Club Of Fort Worth Dear Members and Friends, Due to the club's excursion to the Omni Theater to see the film, "To Fly" at the Ft. Worth Museum of Science and History, our meeting was very brief.

There were 32 adults and one child who enjoyed soaring over waterfalls, mountains, deserts and major cities without ever leaving our seats. It is a visual experience that often takes the breath away, and, at times, one has the tendency to close one's eyes to escape the near real life catastrophe that appears to

occur.

We made welcome new members, Camille Bolcer, Mary Perricone and Albert Boenisch. Guests were Leona Tesar, Amelia (Millie) Bell, Mary Cole, Ted Bugaj, Mary and Benny Pa.vey and young Jason Gowins. We were glad that Martha Boenisch could be with us at this meeting.

The birthday members were Rose Million, Bessie Prochaska, Bernadette Holford, Ruth Nisle, and guest Benny Pavey.

Due to the first Wed. falling on July 4th, the next meeting has been changed one week later, to July 11th. A cold covered dish luncheon will be served, thus no hostesses were selected.

Our thanks to our two hostesses in June, Mary Kubala and Agnes Reznicek, who made it possible for everyone to get served and have the kitchen cleaned in order that everyone would arrive on time for the 1:00 p.m. showing at the Omni.

Every Fourth of July, the United States celebrates its birthday for independence with family gatherings, etc. Several of us will celebrate with the societies and fraternals at the Sokol Dallas-SPJST No. 130.

When the final buzzer sounded at a recent Brain Bowl challenge recently, one of the quartet of seniors from Ft. Worth Paschal High School helping the school to win the Southwest Regional Whiz Quiz championship and move into competition with 51 other teams from 27 states was Kathy Tesar, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Tesar, members of SPJST Lodge 154. Kathy will join her sister, Sharon at the University of Texas in Austin and pursue her education in communication. Another sister, Debbie, will be a Sophomore at North Tex. State University. We wish to express our Congratulations to this fine family for each girl's achievements.

A recent headline in the local paper read, "Boswell High taps principal from Hurst". Marcus Kret, member of SPJST Lodge 154 has been a principal at the Harwood Junior High for nine years, and from seventy applicants he was elected by the Eagle Mountain- Saginaw school board as the new principal of Boswell High School. Our Congratulations to Marcus, son of Mrs. Margie Kret and the late James Kret. Marcus and his wife, Diane, an assistant food service director for the H.E.B. school district, have three daughters; June at the Czech Club in Dallas. It Bell High School in the fall and 15 year old twins, Kimberly and Kristie, who will start at Boswell

High School in the fall. Mrs. Margie Kret is also very proud of her grandson, Kevin Peck, who graduated from North Garland High School with top Honors.

With family and close friends, Anton Vystavil celebrated his 97th birthday on June 16th at the home of his daughter, Rosie Zalesak. We wish him many more years of good health for more celebrations.

Many of our members attended the XXIV SPJST convention in Corpus Christi. We anticipate reading many reports in the Vestnik and also have verbal reports from several of the members who were in attendance at the convention.

Our congratulations to David Hajek, son of Tracy and Jesse Hajek of Seymour, Texas for being elected District Judge of the 50th Judicial District on May 5th. He will assume this office at the end of the year.

We also extend our congratulations to District III Director Sid and Justine Pokladnik, who celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary on the 30th of June at the Czech Club in Dallas. It was a most enjoyable evening and we wish them many more anniversaries.

Mrs. Anna Johnson had surgery on her right foot on June 15th. She is limited in her walking, but is now recuperating at home. We wish her a speedy recovery.

We would like to express our condolences to Rosemary Gribble and her family on the loss of her husband and father, who passed away June 10, 1984.

Our belated wedding congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Steil (former Wilma Phemister Baird), who married in February and 46th wedding anniversary congratulations to Lucille and Johnny Kret June 22nd, which was celebrated aboard the Princess ship bound for an Alaskan cruise from Seattle, Wash.

Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting opened with Hermina Cihacek, vice president, presiding. She also welcomed all of us in Czech and in English.

Frances Grizzard read the minutes from the last meeting. She then read the "Thank You" notes from Julia Dueser and Betty Billingston.

Lillie McMillen reported on sending cards to Betty Billingston, Julia Dueser and Helton Whitaker.

She reported on Lydia Matusevich who had open-heart surgery in San Antonio. She is staying with her daughter, Helen.

One group discussed buying a commercial stove versus a microwave for our kitchen use.

The door prize donated by Mary Cihacek was won by Frances Grizzard. Frances was kind enough to say she would be responsible for the door prize for July.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Tillie Gillis, Betty Billingston, Frances Grizzard, Eleanor Svacek and Christine Zich.

Clara Cohen gave an interesting resume of the Hubenak Family Reunion at Clara's home. She explained how nice it was to see families that you haven't seen in a long time and their children that have grown up. She also had pictures to show.

Our Ladies' Circle No. 92 wish to congratulate our new State President Howard Leshikar.

We understand that there was a nice representation from Lodge No. 92 at the Convention in Corpus Christi. The delegates who went were Helen and Albert Kubala, Carl and Christine Zich, Al Kercho.

Kenneth Krivanek and Martha Durham. Also present were Carol Everett of Florida and Shirley Zich, daughters of Carl and Christine Zich. Other guests were Mary Ann Krivanek and her daughter, Mary Cecilia. Frank and Marie Tesar were also there, and had fun meeting with old-time friends and going to the banquet on Tuesday night and attending other activities.

We also extend our congratulations to Albert Kubala who was elected Substitute District Director to Sid Pokladnik, Director of District III. Hostesses for our July 10th meeting are'Marie, Joyce and Bunny Tesar and Maria Prill.

Ennis Sewing Circle The

Our Sewing Circle met again June 10, 1984. Twenty-four members attended the meeting. A beautiful bright orange floral quilt was quilted for Hattie Lekar.

For the July 12th meeting, a quilt is scheduled for Agnes Janecka to be quilted.

The covered luncheon always turns out great. Some of the ladies who don't quilt help out with the luncheon and cleanup. Those who don't do either one, can sit and tell jokes. We cannot put everybody in the kitchen or around the quilting rack, so some of us have to sit or stand around and just talk. The menfolk who come along with members are always welcome to the luncheon.

Birthday wishes went out to Vivian Vrana, Mary Bouska and Sylvia Laznovsky for the month of June. Hattie Lekar and Wilma Jelinek brought door prizes. Miss Agnes Houdek and Vojta Janicek won the prizes.

A lot of you ladies who have not attended (like you of Dallas), we welcome you to showup again and attend regularly. We hear all your regards sent to the meetings through other members. We all are grateful for Mary Vrla's successful eye surgery because she can see better, now.

Fourth Quarterly Report Dear Members: Reports for the fourth youth quarter for the months of March, April, and May have been received and reimbursements sent to the participating clubs. Out of 42 youth clubs 29 sent in a report.

A total of 29 checks (26 last quarter) are going out in the aggregate amount of $597.00 ($540.00 last quarter). The average monthly attendance was 397.99 (363.31 last quarter). These are modest increases in all three areas.

This YAD will be upstairs because there will be a family reunion downstairs, so we ask you to please come upstairs.

We are trying a new type of outing this year. Hope you can join us.

We are going to H.E.B. camp at Leakey. This will be our first try at this type of camp... I know it will be a success, all we need is YOU. The camp has a capacity for 60 people. The invitation gives priority to active youth club members, then on a first come basis. Anyone may go. Bring your grandchildren.

This camp will be different. We are asking everyone to bring food enough for those they are bringing. You will also be responsible for the care and behavior of the people you bring to camp. We will have a lifeguard, a nurse, and, hopefully, a cook.

Even if we do hire a cook, everyone will have to take turns helping with the cooking and cleaning.

All it will cost you is the food you bring. I will post a menu so we will be able to put our food together to prepare the meals.

We are to arrive at Camp Lennet Wing's (at H.E.B. CAMP) after <3 p.m. Thursday, we will stay Friday-Saturday, and leave for home Sunday after LUNCH. Send in your application now. Time is short. I will let you know as soon as the 60 places are filled.

ROUND ROCK HAS NEW YOUTH CLUB OFFICERS The June 24 meeting of Lodge 187 was called to order at 6:30 p.m.

At our meeting we discussed YAD. We have several entries for craft and king and queen.

For our social we are going bowling; the date was set for July 15, from 3 to 5:30 p.m.

We are planning a lock-in for District II Youth Club only. We would like for youth leaders to attend. It will be August 4th; that Saturday, you need to get there between 3 and 4:45 p.m. Doors will be locked at 5 p.m. The lock-in will last until 12 noon Sunday, the 5th.

We will have games, music, food, etc.

Dear Members: We held our first meeting of the youth year Sunday, June 10, 1984.

Door prizes were won by Diane Luza and me; both of us got beach balls.

We received our cookbooks to sell as a fund-raising activity and each of us received twenty books to sell by our meeting in August.

We also practiced for our Youth Achievement Day program.

We had planned our swimming party for June 30 at 2 p.m. at the A&M Annex Pool.

We donated $25 to Holly Zingelmann of Rogers who was in the hospital a few weeks and had several surgeries. A speedy recovery was wished to her.

Our birthday celebrant for June was Amber Henderson who had a birthday June 18th. "Happy Birthday" to her!

Marcus Kret Appointed Boswell Principal

Monday evening the board interviewed the three remaining applicants which included Hafley and Wayside Middle School principal John Craft.

Willkie said the decision was "one of the toughest we've ever had to make." But the decision was unanimous.

"We had to make a choice from three top notch, super good people.

Our number one priority was to make the very best decision for our district. Whatever we do is for the betterment of Boswell and the entire Eagle Mountain-Saginaw school district.

"We hope all three of these individuals will remain on our campuses. Not taking anything away from Weldon or John we were looking for new leadership. We feel like we have found a good leader. He (Kret) just seems to have all the proper credentials, the personality and good leadership ability," Willkie said.

Superintendent of schools Bill Anderson commented, "Kret is a top notch individual and I look forward to working with him."

However, Hafley commented, "I have no intention of coming back here as assistant principal. I feel the board did what they felt was right but it does not make me happy. They are convinced they are going to make Boswell a better place by bringing in an outsider. I hope they're right. But I am still not convinced they made the right choice. I think I was the best applicant."

Since he has worked at the school as acting principal Hafley said, "The kids attitude has been super. The faculty has been supportive. We have been working as a unit. I think we have apparently. It seems they thought a change was in order."

Hafley has spent a total of eight years with the Eagle MountainSaginaw school district.

The newly appointed principal has worked hard for the success he has achieved in his life.

While in his junior year at Northside High School he went to work for a Safeway Supermarket in River Oaks as a "package boy". His father, James Kret (now deceased) worked for the Swift Packing Co. of Fort Worth, His mother Mrs. Margie Kret still lives on the Northside.

The former "package boy" remembers he had little time for sports and other extra curricular activities but he has fond memories of his time spent as editor of the school's newspaper — The Lariat.

He continued to work for Safeways while studying at Texas Christian University. In his senior year he married Diane Crader from West Fort Worth.

He and his wife, now assistant food service director for H.E.B. school district, even considered a career with the supermarket chain.

Having risen to produce manager at the store Kret recalled, "My wife and I sat down and thought about it very seriously. I took a substantial decrease in pay (by accepting a teaching post).

"But there are rewards to working with the kiddos. They are

intangible type rewards and, although the money is important, it's not everything," he said.

He became inspired to teach in his high school junior year after being in class with an especially good English teacher.

Kret started his career in education teaching science and history in the Hurst Junior High School. For one year he was social study supervisor and then promoted to vice principal when the Bedford Junior High School opened.

In 1972 he was promoted to principal of the Hurst Junior High School. He remained in that position until 1976 when he was appointed principal of Harwood Junior High School — the newest school to be built in the 18,000-student district.

Kret, of Czechoslovakian descent, is no stranger to the Eagle Mountain area. His uncle Johnny Kret lives in Saginaw and his first cousin is ophthalmologist Dr. Tim Kret. He and his wife attend St. Michael's Catholic Church.

The couple have a daughter Shelley, 16, who will be going into her senior year at L.D. Bell High School in the fall. And they have twin (non-identical) 15-year-old daughters, Kimberly and Kristie, who will start at Boswell High School in the fall.

Asked what changes he intends making at Boswell, Kret jokingly replied; "I always tend to go along with the old adage, 'If it ain't broke down - don't try to fix it!"

And asked if his emphasis was on academics, sports or the arts, Kret said, "If I had to answer that I'd say my emphasis is on the individual student. You have to look at the total child.

"In my area of expertise, if I had to brag on myself, it would be in the area of curriculum development."

Kret has taken course in curriculum development at the University of Texas at Arlington.

"Academics are extremely important and this is how we are going to measure, to a degree, an individual's success in life. But you've go to temper that with being a well rounded individual. Whether it's fine arts, athletics or pure academics . . . anything that we can do to help make that student a wellrounded individual. That's the bottom line."

Kret says he hopes to have a meeting with the Boswell High School faculty as soon as possible.

"I want to have a brief 'needs assessment' meeting. I'd like to get input from the faculty, what direction they feel like we need to be moving. There seems to be a lot of good things going on here.

"I have heard nothing very negative outside of what's normal in any high school. I feel like I am getting into a very good situation.

The job I hold now is a quality position and I feel very fortunate to be in the position I am.

"But I feel this (appointment as Boswell's new principal) is an advancement. I am excited and looking forward to working with the staff. There's a . lot of hard work ahead of us but I am ready for that challenge," he said.

A keen believer in getting involved in community functions, Kret belongs to the Optimist Club.

He keeps himself in tip top shape by running three miles early each

Books on Czech Genealogy

Czech family historians who are researching the genealogy of their pioneer Czech or Moravian ancestors in early Texas will find much data in the four books just released for the counties of Lavaca, Austin, Colorado and Fayette. These four volumes include the Czech family entries who were enumerated in the Federal Census of 1860, 1870, 1880 and 1900. The entries include all members of each family by name, age, place of birth and occupation.

The year of arrival in the USA is also shown on the 1900 Census extracts as well as the number of children born to the mother and the number yet living.

The volume Czech Footprints Across Lavaca County contains some 500 pages of extracts and may be obtained from the compilers, Dorothy Bujnoch or Ann Rhodes, Rt. No. 1, Box 180, Hallettsville, Texas, 77964. The price is $32.00 postage paid.

HRABAL B,EUNION, SHROMAZDENI HRABALOVE RODINY The annual Hrabal reunion will be held again at the SPJST Lodge No. 6 Cottonwood Hall, 3 miles East of West on FM 2114, Saturday, July 7th, 1984. This will be our 12th anniversary, so let's make it a big one and make us all happy to see each other again. The program will be as usual. The hall will open at 10:30 a.m. Registration begins at 11 a.m. Refreshments and snacks will be served for old and young until supper time; supper served at 5 p.m. will consist of barbecue beef with all the trimmings and a baked turkey for those who cannot eat barbecue; also bring your favorite dessert if you wish to. The food will be caterstyle like last year. There will be 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes given to all the winners who will be participating in contest games; guessing, blowing bubble gum, shoe racing and old or crazy hat contest for men and women. Following will be an auction, as always, so bring your favorite items. Sunday morning, July 8th breakfast, as always, at the Sheraton Inn at 9:30 a.m. across from Old Main Lodge.

This meal will be Dutch treat affair, so join in for the final good-byes and farewells.
