The Liberty Bell—Among all the famous bells of the world no other has been associated with events relating to humanity as the Liberty Bell, one of the most priceless relics of the American Republic. Its golden tone was listened to as if to a voice of the prophet foretelling the greatness of a nation. It had a defiant note when independence was proclaimed. It had a joyous sound when the struggle of the Revolution was completed. It tolled in sorrow when the founders and builders of our liberty passed on. And when it finally was silenced, it remained to be the symbol of human aspirations for freedom and independence.

To the people of the Czech extraction, the history of the Liberty Bell an additional responsive - chord. The Moravian Brethren, living in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, had their share in saving this bell. But it may be better to tell the history of the bell very briefly.

In 1751, the superintendent of the statehouse in Philadelphia ordered the bell from London, England. Up to that time no large bells were cast in America. The order stated that it must be cast by the best craftsmen found in England, and that it must have, besides other lettering, a verse from the Old Testament, from the third Book of Moses, the twentyfifth chapter, saying, "Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof." A selection of a verse perfectly fitting into the events which happened twenty-five years later, in 1776, was truly prophetic.

The tower and belfry of the statehouse had just been completed when the bell was delivered. The tongue of the bell, the clapper, was placed in position, and the bell was tried for sound. The bell cracked at the first trial. The ship which brought the bell was still in port.

Some wanted to send the bell back to England for recasting, but finally it was decided that American workmen would melt the bell and recast it themselves. It was thought that the metal was too brittle, and it was agreed upon to add more copper to the old metal. When the new bell was tried, it was found that too much copper was added, because the tone of the, bell was not pleasing.

Once more the bell was recast, and the work was satisfactory. It was the third bell, made by home labor, that announced the news of independence twenty-five years later.

The history tells us that the Declaration of Independence was adopted and signed on the Fourth of

July. It was decided to read the Declaration publicly. It took two days to make`the necessary preparations of calling together as many people as possible. On July 6th, 1776, the bell began to ring early in the morning, calling the people to the square. There was a small procession of leading men, who took it upon themselves to read the proclamation to the people. When the men reached the platform, the bell ceased ringing.

When the important document was read through and accepted with applause, the Liberty Bell began to ring once more. Next year the bell rang again, this time on the Fourth of July, the first anniversary of signing of the document, and the custom was continued so long as the bell was in good condition.

Shortly after the first anniversary the Liberty Bell had to be moved from Philadelphia to a quiet little town, Bethlehem, about 50 miles northwest of Philadelphia.

Bethlehem was a settlement of the Moravian Brethren, founded by them thirty-five years before the Declaration of Independence. (The Moravians, otherwise known as the Church of the Brethren, or the Unity of the Brethren, were the descendants and representatives of the ancient church of the Bohemian Brethren, or by its better known Latin name of those days, UNITAS FRATRUM, the followers of John Huss and Peter Chelczicky.) The Liberty Bell was taken to this community of immigrants who held that there should be no distinction of rank among the citizens, no military service and no use of oaths.

The written records kept in the community of the Brethren of Bethlehem contains these words under the date of September 18, 1777: "Army wagons are arriving here since early morning." Five days later this record was made in the journal: "More than 700 wagons arrived today from the army camp.

They trampled all our buckwheat, and destroyed the fences around the fields. After unloading, the wagons returned for more supplies. The wagon, in which was loaded the State House bell from Philadelphia, broke down under its heavy load, and the Brethren helped to unload it."

There were conflicting stories as to how the Liberty Bell was saved.

Some claim that the bell remained hidden in Bethlehem; some told that it was brought to another town farther away and hidden beneath the stone floor of a church; some even maintained that the bell was submerged in the Delaware River.

At any rate, it was saved and later restored to its original place in the belfry of the Independence Hall in Philadelphia, and was only used on special occasions. Thus its golden tones were heard when the centennial anniversary of the birth of Washington was celebrated, February 22, 1832. Its ringing welcomed Lafayette when he arrived in America the second time. It announced the death of the last of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. But it cracked when it was ringing its sad farewell at the death of one of the truly great sons of America. Listed below are the facts: John Marshall, Chief Justice of the United States, a veteran of the Revolution, the interpreter of the

Wednesday, June 20, 1984—VESTMIC/3 Constitution for 34 years, breathed his last on 6 July 1835. Two days later, a huge funeral procession was passing through the streets of Philadelphia. The body of John Marshall was carried to the harbor to be placed on a boat which would take the mortal remains to his late home in Richmond, Virginia. As the Liberty Bell was being tolled in the last farewell to Marshall's memory, it cracked. What is very unusual is the fact that the bell cracked exactly on the same day, July 8, fifty-nine years later after the day when it proclaimed liberty to the American people.

All later experiments to correct the damage proved unsuccessful.

Today the Liberty Bell is a silent memento of a heroic past.

The 1948 silver one-half dollar should be a reminder of the pleasing tone of the old bell. ***

The Birth of the Pledge of Allegiance The National School Week Public School children first recited the pledge as they saluted the flag during the National School celebration in 1892. President Benjamin Harrison at that time called for patriotic exercises in schools to mark the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America. Born in 1855 and died in 1931, Francis Bellamy of Boston was an associate editor of the Youth's Companion who composed the pledge. It was during the National Flag Conference of the American Legion who expanded the original wording in 1923-24. Then in 1942 Congress made the pledge a part of its code for the use of the flag. In 1954 the words "under God" were added to the pledge.

We were so glad to hear the wonderful accordion music by Arthur Zarosky. It really made things festive.

We were so pleased to •have Brother Matt Vanek and his lovely wife Henrietta as guests. Brother Matt came with a bag full of gifts for our lodge members. Thanks for your thoughtfulness, Matt!

There was a snappy question about the Vestnik and key chains were awarded for the correct answers to Sister Martha Kopecky and Mrs. George Lehnert, Sr. President Kulcak read a list of scholarship recipients. They were Carolyn Marie Blaha, Garland David Blaha, Eric Clayton Payne, Craig Neal Popp, Kimberly Vanek, Robbie Churan, Laurie Howell, Renae Merta, Kinnan Stockton and Debbie Mondrik. The money for the scholarships came from the bingo funds. It's such a great feeling that we are able to help such nice young people.

We are at this time number eleven in sales in Texas. Both Brother Matt and Brother James had words of encouragement for our salesmen. Without our salesmen our lodge cannot grow.

President Kuleak also talked about the new addition, cost, choice in material and the saving, and encouraged the members to attend the monthly meetings held every third Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. He and other members welcome all input or comments concerning the running of our organization. Bingo is also helping finance the running of and addition to the building.

Second Vice President Rita Vanek had an announcement about the festivities for the Christmas dinner and New Year's Eve dance. There will be a band for all members and friends. More details later.

They are Brother James Kuleak, Sister Margie Kulcak, Brother Dutch Kopecky, Sister Dora Lee Kopecky, Brother Benny Reck, Brother Frankie Vanek, Sister Laverne Bacak and Brother James Bacak. Also attending are Sister Leona Macha of the Finance Committee and Sister Rita Vanek of the Bylaws Committee. There are a number of changes proposed and delegates have all promised to do their best to represent this lodge.

A delicious meal followed, with members furnishing vegetables, salads and desserts. Our members from Staff's Catering provided delicious fried chicken.

We extend our congratulations to Sister Mary Jean Stoeppelman who was recognized at the Southern District Sokol Slet for the beautiful Prostna she composed and will also be in the National Slet in Chicago, June 1985; also for the special number that took first place. The gymnasts came home with many trophies. Congratulations to you all!

We also congratulate Sisters Judy Briscoe who was named "Teacher of the Year" in the Hurst-Euless-Bedford District and Sister Barbara Ne Smith was elected "Superior of Her Order" in Texas and California.

They are the daughters of Brother Herschel and Sister Mary Ne Smith.

Brother Jerry and Sister Donna Parker and children Thane and Jill just returned from a wonderful vacation in New York visiting Jerry's family; on their way home they visited relatives in Lebanon, Ohio, Indiana and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

We will have a stand on our grounds from June 24th through July 4th with fireworks.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Brother Benny Pavey for his 79th and Sister Anna Johnson. Sister Carrie Milan was the door prize recipient.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, July 8th.

SPJST Lodge 169 held a reorganizational meeting at the Nancy Carol Library on Sunday, May 20 at 6:00 p.m. President Nick & Mrs. Morris, from Temple, attended this meeting and explained the various options open to our lodge. The reason for this meeting was to inform the members of the very low attendance at lodge meetings and the lack of interest shown by the members.

There will be another very important meeting in the near future. If you are a member of Lodge 169 and care about keeping this lodge, please make an effort to attend this meeting. All members will receive a letter informing them of the date, time, and place of this meeting.

Coming Events For Pasadena Lodge No. 172

will be served free and to guests it will cost $6 per person. There also will be a dance with music by Bobby Jones and His Band from Boling, Texas who plays variety music.

We danced to his music June 3rd at Lodge 88 and half of Houston seemed to be there at their "homecoming" having a good time. The meal prepared by Brother John Hilsher and his helpers was delicious, also the selective pastries, coffee and tea.

We ran into some lodge and district dignitaries, namely, past President Larry Flughaupt, President Jerome Ermis and District V Director Louis Hanus, plus meeting others we haven't seen for several years; they were all a friendly and courteous group of people.

'Don't forget our lodge dance for June 23rd when we will be having Lee Roy Matocha of Fayetteville, Texas playing your favorite variety music.

In our hearts we are not forgetting those who are sick and in distress. We also remember our deceased loved ones in our prayers.

Czech Heritage Society Of Texas To Hold Workshop The Czech Heritage Society of Texas will hold a workshop at the Victoria College Student Union Building June 30 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There will be a meeting of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas in the morning with Albert J. Blaha, Sr. of Houston as the guest speaker.

He will talk on what the Czech Heritage Society of Texas stands for and what the society's goals are.

The only charge for the workshop will be for the lunch catered by DoNuts and More at 11:45 a.m. The lunch will cost $5.50.

The meeting will reconvene at 12:30 p.m. The organizational meeting of the Victoria County Czech Heritage Society will be held.

After a break, the Czech genealogy experts present will hold

a genealogy workshop. The genealogists expected to be present are: Edmund Hejl of Ft. COTTONWOOD YOUTH CLUB PLANS ACTIVITIES Dear Members and Friends: The youth club of Lodge 6 held their meeting at 2:15 p.m. and they had a good attendance.

Election of officers was held and they are: President— Shirley Dobecka, Vice President—Darrell Uptmor, Secretary —Lanette Hykel, Treasurer —Kevin Dobecka, Hykel, Reporter — Terry Joe Historian —Raymond Hromadka.

Cakes were donated to the West Rest Haven for their June 6th Birthday Party by our club members. The youth will bring a cake in July.

We had three youth members graduating from grade school to high school and one from high school. A swimming party and fried chicken supper was planned for them, June 13th.

Money and gifts to charities and members in hospitals were donated by our youth club.

The youth clubbers are still selling knives and cards; the knives are boxed in sets which make nice

wedding, anniversary and birthday gifts.

Elaine Stuckley was the only birthday celebrant in the month of June. Terry Hykel brought the cake.

Fathers were honored with gifts that the youth club made and door prizes that were donated by the club members. "Happy Father's Day" was wished to all of them.

Our next meeting will be held Friday night, July 6th, so be sure and don't forget to attend our meeting.

The District HI YAD will be held July 1st at Lodge 154 in Fort Worth, so all the youth and adult members of Lodge 6 try to attend the youth activities.

We will have our annual lodge picnic Sunday, July 15 and we will need help for games, cake walk, fish pond and "dunking Sam"; if you have items you wish to give away, bring them to our games and also bake an extra cake for our cake walk, it will be appreciated very much.

District III camp will be July 23rd, 24th, 25th and 26th at Camp Val Verde. I need each youth club member to fill out two blanks for camp for all of you who are going; I need them RIGHT AWAY. ' State YAD and Royalty will be on the same day, August 12th at Temple High School beginning at 10:30 a.m. for registration.

Interesting Book On Beautiful America

Although most Texans are at least vaguely aware of this ethnic group due to community festivals such as Westfest at West, Texas, and the popularity of the Czech pastry called the kolac, they may know little about the important, uniquely Czech institutions in the state: the century-old Czech press, the very successful fraternal organization known as the SPJST (along with the prominent Catholic fraternal orders, the KJT and KJZT), and the distinctive Unity of the Brethren Church, to name only a few.

Very little about these subjects has been included in the traditional Texas history books, although the Czechs constitute one of the largest ethnic minorities in the state and have been a major economic, cultural, and political influence, particularly in Central Texas.

The book contains a helpful introduction which briefly sketches the history of the Czech people and clears up some common misunderstandings about them. For example, many think that the term "Bohemian" is synonymous with the term "Czech," but this is not correct.

Most of the Czechs who settled in Texas did not come from Bohemia at all. Instead, they came from the Czech province known as Moravia, and they spoke a special dialect of Czech that can still be heard in some Texas Czech farming communities today.

In the first two chapters of the book, Machann and Mendl trace the history of the Texas Czechs, from the 1880s, when they began to emigrate to Texas in large numbers, to about the time of World War II, which was in some ways the high point of Czech ethnicity in the state.

Among the early settlers were some especially important and colorful figures. Anthony Dignowity was a prominent doctor and businessman in San Antonio and a friend of Sam Houston. His Unionist sympathies got him into trouble during the Civil War. Josef Bergman was a minister who settled in the village of Cat Springs in 1850. His encouraging letters about the opportunities in Texas written to friends in Europe made him personally responsible for attracting the first large groups of Czechs to Texas.

Later in the century, pioneer Catholic priest Josef Chromcik and Rev. Adolf Chlumsky, who was primarily responsible for organizing the Czech Brethren Church in Texas, were important figures in the Czech community. Later still, successful Czechs such as Augustin Haidusek, the first member of his ethnic group to obtain a law degree, to serve in the Texas legislature, and as County Judge, became very influential community leaders.

Throughout the late nineteenth century and the early twentieth century, the vast majority of the Texas Czechs were farmers and lived in rural areas. After describing the large, early settlements in Austin, Fayette, Lavaca, and Washington Counties, and the gradual movement of Czech farm families throughout large areas of the state, Machann and Mendl devote a chapter to the social institutions of the Czechs. Their cooperative, rural way of life was marked by an amazing number of

The authors also devote chapters to religion, folk culture, Czech language, journalism, and literature and ethnic identity and assimilation.

Any one of these chapters culd have been expanded to book length, due to the surprising amount of interesting information available.

For example, Texas has supported over thirty Czechlanguage newspapers since the late nineteenth century and out-of-state newspapers and journals, especially from Chicago, also enjoyed large circulations in Texas. Two all-Czech newspapers survive in Texas today; along with two others that print at least some articles in the Czech language.

The story of Czech folklore in Texas is also a large subject in itself.

Particularly notable are the large number of folk songs that are alive and well even today. Approximately thirty to forty Czech-American polka dances are still held in Texas each week, and several radio stations continue to broadcast programs which feature music with Czech lyrics. Shows of this type in the 1920's were early examples of "ethnic programming."

Krasna Amerika contains nearly fifty illustrations, including useful maps and numerous photographs of people and places. Also included are a larke bibliography and several useful appendices. One appendix lists virtually every Czech community in Texas. county by county, in chronological order.

Dozens of names of early settlers and specific dates will be of particular interest to Texas Czechs who are preparing their own "family histories."

According to the authors, the important story of the Czechs in Texas has been virtually ignored for so long because much of the information necessary for research was difficult to obtain and use. The book, Nase dejiny (Our History), for example, compiled by the National Council of Czech Catholics in Texas in 1939, is an excellent source, but like many others, it was written in Czech. The ability of both authors to read Czech was essential in conducting research for the book, as was their patience and hard work in collecting a large number of obscure and difficult-to-obtain sources over a period of years.

Both authors cite the lack of information about Texas Czechs in the history books used in the state's public schools as one of the factors that inspired them to write the book.

Machann is an associate professor of English at Texas A&M University and Mendl teaches history and government at Kirby Hall School in Austin. Mendl also occasionally teaches Czech classes, most recently at Temple Junior College. Both have traveled and studied in Czechoslovakia.

Corpus Christi, Texas Who are all these people walking or running around Corpus Christi?

Seems as if South Texans have just discovered their feet!

Sometimes for a charity, sometimes for athletic awards, sometimes for good health, people of

all ages seem to be going on shanks' mare all over town, in small groups or big crowds.

That wide sidewalk atop the seawall is perfect for all kinds of foot races and more of them take place elsewhere in the area.

In February, there was a "Run for Your Life", a sponsored minimarathon to benefit the American Heart Association. On May 5, a "Walk America" benefitted the "March of Dimes".

The ninth annual Beach-to-Bay Marathon celebrated Armed Forces Day on May 19. Corpus Christi Road Runners entered almost 2,500 runners in teams of six to complete the 26-mile marathon, from Nueces County Park on Padre Island to Cole Park on Ocean Drive.

Now comes a stroll on the Bayfront on July 15, preceded by a walk in West Guth Park on July 14.

Both of these interesting events are for 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). The Sparkling City Strollers now attract several hundred walkers. They are fully sanctioned by the American Volkssport Association and the International Federation of Popular Sports.

Volkssports (family-oriented) evolved from public running races in Southern Germany in the 1960's.

The idea spread to many countries in Europe (not in the Soviet bloc) and now in the United States and Canada.

It was actually in Fredericksburg, Texas, that the sport started in 1976, with recognition nationally of the American Volkssport Association by June, 1979. Later by the International Federation of Popular Sports. (There are yolksswims, bicycling and ski wandering also.) Anyone may join. Kids (accompanied by parents) and dogs (on a leash) included.

For a small fee or two (totalling not more than $5) one may register, work for a patch or hat pin or beautiful medal.

Record books of places, dates and distances are kept. Some participants proudly display several patches on their jackets from walks all over America or in foreign countries.

The July walks here are set for Saturday, July 14, at West Guth Park from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, the 15th, walks will be started at 6:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. (not the hottest time of day), at the bandshell on the Peoples St. T-Head.

These are only a few of the walks or races scheduled. It doesn't count all those parades held in Corpus Christi.

Of course, the Junior Parade on Saturday afternoon and the illuminated Night Parade the following Saturday evening, were highlights of Buccaneer Days recently.

What is the Fourth of July without a parade and fireworks? A two-hour parade on Independence Day will begin at the Tourist Bureau/Chamber of Commerce building on Shoreline Drive at 6 p.m., to end at the Coliseum. Bishop Rene Garcia will be the Grand Marshall, State Senator Carlos Truan and Mayor Luther Jones are sponsors.

The Confederate Air Force Ghost Squadron will give an air salute.

Flags and red, white and blue balloons everywhere. After a short patriotic ceremony with music,

there will be a fireworks display over the water.

First time for the fireworks on the Fourth; fourth time for the parade after a hiatus caused by World War II. But the walks, races and parades are not over yet. Always a special feature of the city's fall festival, the Bayfest Marathon, with perhaps 1,250 runners, will be held on Shoreline to the Naval Air Station and back; half-marathons and 4-mile races, too.

Last weekend in September for the "Bayfest".

People are moving, at all speeds, by nature's provision for human propulsion.

State Program Promotes Use Of Safety Seats for Kids In Texas last year, 78 children aged 0-4 died as passengers in motor vehicle accidents. Another 6,603 were injured—many seriously.

Texas leads the nation with these grim statistics. Yet in some areas of the state, as few as 4 per cent of children ride in car safety seats.

National studies indicate that the death and injury rate for children in motor vehicle accidents would be 70 to 90 per cent less if all children were properly restrained in safety seats.

Because so many Texas children are killed or hurt in motor vehicle accidents, and because so few parents take advantage of the protection offered by car safety seats, the Texas Department of Health, in cooperation with the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation, is starting a statewide campaign to promote the use of safety seats.

The TDH's Child Passenger Safety Program is providing general information about the seats as well as educational materials explaining how to buy or borrow child safety seats and how to properly install and use them.

John Snider, coordinator of the program at TDH headquarters in Austin, said, "We are just beginning to gear-up this program statewide.

If our model program in the DallasFort Worth area is as successful as we expect, our statewide campaign will be intensified."

The model program in the DallasFort Worth area is meant to demonstrate that the deaths and injuries of children in motor vehicle accidents will decrease with better availability and wider use of child safety seats, Snider said.

The statewide program includes a telephone hotline. Information, in English and Spanish, on projects which loan or sell safety seats at reduced prices is available through the hotline. In addition, callers may order educational materials, also in English and Spanish.

The hotline number is 1-800-2528255. It is manned weekdays from 8 a.m. to ,5 p.m.

In Texas we spell it S-U-C-C-E-S-S. 1983's Smokeout was just that. It generated more enthusiasm, more local activities, more volunteer involvement — and more would-be 24hour abstainers — than any previous effort.

Factors Important In Lowering Cholesterol

COLLEGE STATION — 'A lowcholesterol diet alone is no insurance against coronary heart disease.

"Although cholesterol has received a great deal of publicity, it is not the only factor associated with heart attacks," says Dr. Alice Hunt, a nutritionist with the Texas A&M University Agricultural Extension Service.

"High blood pressure, smoking, obesity and physical inactivity are also involved," she adds. "So those concerned about heart disease really need to examine several different lifestyle changes they can make to reduce this risk."

For example, restricting total calories to reduce weight is effective in lowering cholesterol levels for anyone, but especially for those who are overweight, says Hunt.

Because physical activity is also an important factor in keeping cholesterol levels low, the American Heart Association advocates regular exercise. Studies show an inverse relationship between exercise and cholesterol levels, she explains.

Many people who eat large amounts of fat and cholesterol, but are also heavy exercisers — like athletes or laborers — have normal cholesterol levels.

A recent study by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute which showed that reducing cholesterol with diet and drugs can reduce the risk of heart disease, has generated more public interest in low-fat diets, says the nutritionist.

But not everyone needs to be concerned with cholesterol, she says, since it's estimated that only about 25% of American adult men and women need to lower their cholesterol levels.

If you are considering a lowcholesterol diet, Hunt suggests having your blood cholesterol level checked by your doctor. ILA is above 240 mg/dl, your doctor may recommend that it be reduced.

A cholesterol-lowering diet involves restricting consumption of meat, eggs and shellfish while also reducing overall fat consumption to less than 30 percent of your calories.

Even with such a diet, cholesterol reductions may not be highly significant. Participants in the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute study who were on lowcholesterol diets for 7 to 10 years reduced their levels by an anverage of only four percent.

Those participants who took the cholesterol lowering drug had an 1825 percent drop. Since all the participants were already in a high risk category for heart disease, the strict diets and drug treatment were understandable, says Hunt.

A low cholesterol diet may not be necessary for everyone, but a wellbalanced diet is, says Hunt.

Vitamin C is necessary for every cell in the body. It prevents scurvy, which causes swollen and sore joints, spongy bleeding gums and bruising.

But just how much vitamin C is necessary for good health has been the subject of a 50-year controversy.

According to the National Research Council, which sets recommended levels for nutrients, 60 milligrams of vitamin C per day is adequate to maintain good health. A single orange has about 66 milligrams.

It takes only 15 milligrams of vitamin C per day to prevent scurvy.

'Some self-taught nutritionists and vitamin sales persons disagree with this figure," says Dr. Alice Hunt, a Texas A &M University Agricultural Extension Service nutritionist.
