NOTICE There will be NO Vestnik dated June 27; we will publish a Vestnik dated June 20 and the following Vestnik will be July 4.

In this issue are some final recommended changes and/or additions to the bylaws of our SPJST; they are on pages 20 and 21 and they are in darker (boldface) type. In some cases it is only one word and could be easily overlooked so you are urged to read very carefully; for instance there are two cases of this: 35 C and 90 days. Please read the editor's note at the beginning of the change recommendations. Remember these changes will effect our Society in its future work and actions; it is the duty and responsibility of the delegates to give them careful and thoughtful consideration! ** *

In the last few weeks, many letters have been written and thoughts expressed in them plus proposals for changes in the bylaws. One word of caution this editor would have for all concerned and that is that we should use the admonition of the old Czech proverb which translates to — "measure twice before you cut once!"

Let us not rush the deliberations without giving them thoughtful consideration and LET US DO THE BEST FOR OUR SOCIETY! Brother Calvin Chervenka has another thought-provoking letter in this issue, again. We have a very democratic order and a free publication from the formation of our Society in 1897; do we wish to change it? It seems that the Vestnik, cost of it, the Publication Committee and the editor are on the minds of some of our members; I wonder if these items have been thoroughly thought out. The Vestnik has a lot more value to our Society than credit is given to it. Think about it!

"Be Proud Of It."

The 207th birthday of the Flag of the United States of America is June 14, 1984. This flag is a symbol of the faith held by the founding fathers of this great nation.

Ten generations of Americans are represented by the stars and stripes.

The red, white and blue — colors of the national emblem — have inspired patriotic Americans to heroic deeds and supreme sacrifices. The call of the colors brings out the best in most people.

Current events give us reason to reaffirm a greater devotion to liberty, which is threatened in many parts of the world. According to Robert Hutchins, democracy is the only form of government that is founded on the dignity of man, not the dignity of some men, of rich men, or educated men, but of all men. Its sanction is not the sanction of force, but the sanction of human nature. Equality and justice, the two great distinguishing characteristics of democracy, follow inevitably from the conception of men, as rational and spiritual being's.

In this light freedom takes on meaning. It is not freedom to do as one pleases, but freedom to achieve that autonomy which is approached in proportion as one: develops a rational and spiritual nature. It is not mere freedom to live that concerns men most, but freedom to live human lives. Men must be free to exercise those powers which make them men.

Flag Day is a day for all Americans to remember their roots, be grateful for their blessings and rededicate themselves to the basic American ideals.

President Woodrow Wilson in 1916 proclaimed the first Flag Day, thus fulfilling the dream for a former schoolmaster, Bernard J. Cigrand.

Cigrand, a 19-year-old schoolteacher in a tiny, stone schoolhouse at Fredonia, Wisconsin held the first known observance of "Flag Birthday" on June 14, 1885. A small American flag with only 38 stars in its field of blue was held upright in a bottle on his desk while he reviewed its history with his students and led them in a ceremonial pledge. That was the beginning of Cigrand's efforts to have a day set aside as "Flag Birthday" to honor the Flag of the United States.

A bronze marker attesting to the historical significance of Cigrand's patriotism and his love for the flag stands in front of the Stony Hill Schoolhouse in Fredonia.

The National Fraternal Flag Foundation and member societies of the National Fraternal Congress of America have made a national shrine of the Stony Hill Schoolhouse. Each year members of the foundation / conduct a flag-raising ceremony in the schoolyard and invite all Americans to recognize and honor the flag, symbol of their freedom.

In his original Flag Day message in 1917, President Wilson said: "This Flag, which we honor and under which we serve, is the emblem of our unity, our power, our thought and purpose as a nation. It has no other character than that which we give it from generation to generation.

The choices are ours."

Members of fraternal benefit societies throughout America will hold special Flag Day ceremonies.

Join with them. Let others see your pride in The United States and in "the Red, White and Blue," "Old Glory," "the Stars and Stripes," . . . the Flag of the United States ... your flag. ,L

FRATERNAL WEEK AND FLAG DAY PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, The fraternal benefit societies of the United States have historically sponsored the week of June 8-14 as FRATERNAL WEEK.

During this seven day period these societies make a definite effort to inform the entire nation of the contribution to pride in heritage made each day by members of the Fraternal Benefit System; and WHEREAS, National, cultural, and spiritual values have always been recognized by fraternalists as qualities necessary for the continued growth and stability of our Nation; and

Then, in 1932, a stage was added to the hall and various Czech plays and shows were given. This provided a graduated increase in activity. However, it wasn't until 1947 when Charlie Mikeska became an organizer that the lodge showed any considerable gain.

In 1959, with the help of John and Rudolph Krizan in the organizational field, Lodge 6 won the "first" District III Queen contest. Honored with this title was Miss Janie Hubik and her escort Jerry Janek. Another honor on the same level was achieved in 1961 by Miss Linda Mynar (queen) and Donald Zatopek (escort).

The lodge hall was remodeled in 1961, more space was added in 1964, and in 1971 the lodge improved its building with air-conditioning.

An important milestone occured in 1959 under the leadership of Sister Ruth Krizan and Sister Martha Monthei when the lodge's "first" youth club was organized. In 1964 the youth club had to be divided into two groups for the club to be able to participate in various events. In 1968 Dorothy Schuetz and Ernie Makovy were elected youth leaders. In 1970 Willie Mae Schuetz was elected youth leader with Rose Uptmor as her assistant that they still presently hold. Under her long years of leadership, there were too numerous achievers to mention, However, on the royalty state level it is known that Ernie Makovy won king in 1967, Anton Kaluza in 1971.

During the past few years royalty winners on the District III level included King David Dobecka, and the late Queen Therese Mae Dobecka, plus several "first" place winners in the arts and crafts category. Other state titles were accomplished by winning Youth Club of the Year Junior and Teenager of the Year and Youth Leader of the Year. If you ever visit

Cottonwood Lodge 6, you find their hard-working club members' pictures hanging on the wall from 1959 through 1983.

Lodge 6 officers are: President Robert Dobecka, Vice President Rose Uptmor, Secretary Barbara Jean Hykel, Financial Secretary George Straton, Treasurer Stella Perez, Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz, and Assistant Rose Uptmor. Terry Hykel is their flag bearer and Peggy Dobecka serves as reporter.

In 1984 there were several 50year members who were eligible for their membership pins; namely, Edmond Hegar, Wilhelmina Truitt, Elsie Moravec, Marie Marguliex and Rosalee Urbis.

Robert Dobecka, Barbara Jean Hykel, Johnnie Krizan, George Straton and Aubrey Uptmor are delegates.

The membership of Lodge 6 shares the feeling of having one of the best fraternal oriented family lodges in the area; for this, they honor their , pioneer fathers and fellow members who have made their lodge a growing and friendly place to bring the family and friends.

Space does not permit the recognition of all their members, however, their untold devotion of time and effort will long be remembered.

Brief History of Lodge 9, Snook Lodge Slovan No. 9 in Snook joined the SPJST Order March 17, 1897 in the Sebesta community.

At that time 15 members gathered to discuss the organization of an SPJST lodge within this territory.

Meanwhile as interest and enthusiasm grew among the instrumental members, Lodge 9 had its roots firmly set with about 104 members and was dedicated July 1, 1897.

Their first meeting took place in the CSPS Nova Osada Hall at Sebesta, Texas. After the membership started increasing, in 1910 the members decided they needed a hall of their own in which to conduct its meetings and activities.

Lodge 9 first lodge home was dedicated December 26, 1910, with Method Pazdral of West, Texas as guest speaker. After a short life the building was burned down from unknown reason in the first part of January 1911; after two dances had been held in it. The members wouldn't accept defeat in the meantime they were able to construct another lodge home which served Lodge 9 until 1935.

Thereafter, members supported their lodge more than before and they were more or less forced to build another larger home building.

A Building Committee was set-up to make plans for the new hall. This committee went to work August 7, 1935 to work out plans on the third hall and use the lumber which, could be salvaged, plus apply, for financial

assistance from the Supreme Lodge Their dedication on the third lodge home was held December 26, 1935.

With continued cooperation of all members, the members had their new home paid for by the end of 1945.

Among some of the modern improvements consists of a kitchen, bar, restrooms, running water, and air-conditioners were also installed.

The lodge, located in Snook, Texas, is also known for having a very active youth club in the district, under the leadership of Betty Schoenemann.

Recently they honored their 50year members; namely, Georgia Ann Cummings, 011ie Jakubik, Fred Lednicky, Clara Orsak, Lillie Edmonson, Robert L. Skrabanek, Ernest Jakubik, Albina Hart, Bessie Skopik, Eddie Fojt, and Chas. J. Sebesta.

Serving as delegates to the 24th Convention are: Mary Ann Vajdak, Richard Vajdak, Donnie Victorick, and Janice Victorick.

History Of Lodge Karel Jonas 28, East Bernard

SPJST Convention. That convention was one of the turning points in the history of Lodge 28 because it caused an increase in membership and made known the name SPJST in the surrounding communities.

When the first frame building (hall) burned in March 1918, Alois Urbanec, charter member and first treasurer, let the lodge membership use his place of business for their meetings at no cost.

In 1914 the dramatic club "Krouzek Snaha" was formed, the purpose being to produce and perform plays in the Czech language. The club produced numerous plays. Some were held in Schulenburg, Guy and Houston. The last play produced was presented at the 1936 SPJST Convention.

Sokol East Bernard was formed in the hall in 1925 and continued until 1936.

The hall was used as the community's picture show in the 1930's and 40's. Other groups and organizations produced Czech plays in the hall, including Sokol Houston, Hlahol Dramatic Club of Lodge 88 in Houston and Texas Lodge ZCBJ (known now as WFLA). The hall was also used to produce plays by the local public high school and the Catholic school.

Lodge 28 hosted the 1936 SPJST

Convention, which was held in the Riverside Hall on the banks of the San Bernard River on the east side of East Bernard.

The lodge has also hosted District VI meetings in 1979 and 1984.

Enrollment of members at our lodge stands at 562.

We have several members who were 50-year pin recipients; namely, Lydia Sperlik and Vaclav Sindel in 1975; Albert Lupik and Lillie Nezval (1976), Bozena Tulley, Edward J. Novosad and Adolph Urbanec (1978), Joe Maly, Jr. and Erna Urbanec (1981), Georgia M. Burnside (1982), and Albert J. Kubena, Alma Schiller and Martha Naiser (1983).

The lodge is also proud to state that we had two members who outlived their insurance policy by attaining age 96; they were the late Brother John Klecka and the late Brother John K. Novosad.

Charitable donations were made in 1981 for $175 and $150 in 1983.

The beginning of Praha Lodge No. 29 near Taylor, Texas was organized on April 16, 1899.

Charter members were: Jos. E. Jancak, Josef Jirasek, V. A. Masek, John H. Strnad, Marie Strnad, Anton G. Strnad, Jind. Frisl and Amalie Frisl. The devoted 10

members continued their efforts to reach a total of 27 members by 1st January 1903.

By January 1910, the membership increased to 99 members. The decade between 1940 and 1950 was the best growth in membership; on January 1950, there were 968 adults and 226 under 17 years of age. By 1972, there were 1,267 adults and 384 juvenile members in the lodge.

It was decided to buy four acres of land as a site for the lodge building at a cost of $1,000 on May 7, 1933.

Many more improvements have been added within the 22-year period; such as air-conditioning, renovating the ground-floor by providing a special meeting room and a new kitchen, reconstructing the, front of the building, and paving the parking area The lodge has a very active youth club under the supervision of Brother Melvin and Sister Geraldine Steger along with their assistants.

Their youth club has achieved many district and state awards at Youth Achievement Days; mainly in talent and arts/crafts. They also hold an annual Mayfete to select their royalty which is usually held always the first Sunday in May for many, many ye ars.

Lodge 29 is well-known for hosting State Royalty competition several times and also hosted the

SPJST Convention in 1940. Their lodge always had additional delegates to represent the lodge at each convention and in 1984 there are 13 delegates; namely, Edwin Adamek, Kathryn Adamek, Ila Mae Jansky, Joe Jansky, Michael Kaiser, Albin Machu, Elaine Machu, Donna Pasemann, Otto Rieger, Ronnie Reiger, Geraldine Steger, Melvin Steger and Frances Tallas.

Eighty Years Of Lodge 54 History

Fifty-Year Members Honored at Lodge Seaton on May 6th. After two postponements and one failure at a vote to build a lodge home, in October 1905 the voting results were 22 for 10 against. Two acres of land were purchased from the Joseph Holans for $75 an acre on 27 February 1906.

The membership totaled at that time each loaning $10 to the building fund, ten days of free labor and $1 a day for working or if you couldn't work you paid $1 a day for your replacement. After all funds were exhausted, another $10 per person were collected.

During Labor Day weekend the lodge home was dedicated in 1906 with intermittent rain falling in the afternoon and a downpour at night.

The merriment went on into the wee hours of the morning after the keg beer was moved indoors.

In 1938 the remodeling of the hall was done and an additional 2 acres were purchased for $300 an acre from Mrs. Sally Holan for more parking area. This building served our purpose until we voted to build a new lodge home with indoor facilities in late 1962. One and a quarter of an acre of land was purchased from Brother and Sister Ed Schneider. While the construction took place in 1963, meetings were held at Seaton School, again.

After the meetings, we took tours of the new building going up. The 64foot by 116-foot building proved to be inadequate, we expanded by enlarging the hall, added a youth room and air-conditioned with central heat and air to modernize the facilities in 1968. We constantly improved by adding the front entrance with the canopy and display room that holds a lot of the history with lodge relics and photographs of various activities,lodge presidents and an honor roll of Brother and Sister award recipients from 1963 to the present and a large storeroom.

The need of additional parking was taken care of by purchasing more land, modernizing of the restrooms and interior improvements took place in the early 70's.

In 1977 we asphalted the parking lot and the area around the barbecue pit. A 40-foot by 40-foot steel building adjacent to the pit with kitchen and restroom facilities was constructed in 1981; these are used many times a year by the lodge and are rented by companies for family parties.

The hall is rented for family reunions, weddings, anniversaries, etc. for a nominal fee. Dances with

bands from all parts of the state are held each Saturday, except the Saturday before Easter or before Christmas. These bands play polka/ waltz, Country/western or ballroom music for all ages; some out-of-state bands and the Moravanka of Brno, Czechoslovakia have also performed at Star Hall, located five, miles east of Temple on Highway 53.

These brothers have served as presidents and have led the lodge up to its present time; namely, Frank Motl, Paul Olejnik, F. E. Hejl, Sr., Frank Spanhel, Sr., Anton V. Mikeska, Charles Kalenda, Sr., John H. Hurta, Joe J. Mikeska, F. E. Hejl, Jr., Frank V. Spanhel, John Kaspar, William Vanicek, Johnny H. Kohut, Johnnie L. Vanicek, Dan F. Balusek, Leon G. Zavodny, Sr., Jerry J. Pechal and Alfred Klusacek, Sr. Their tenure in office varied from 16 years to a few months. From 1970 to 1983, there was a limitation of two years in office in succession, as were the terms of the secretary and treasurer. The financial secretary and youth leader were the only ones to be elected without a limit.

Since 1983, there is no limit to any office nor the Board of Trustees; they are elected for one year term instead of three year terms.

Lodge meetings are held on the first Sunday of each month. We have a lunch and happy hour following the meeting and occasionally a covered dish supper. Our kitchen is operated by lodge members serving one month at a time. We have updated the kitchen that includes a large hamburger grill installed last year and other modern facilities to serve the public at the dances; also fluorescent lighting was installed.

The lodge honors the 50 ,.year pin recipients with a reception and the high school graduates (former youth club members) annually. We hosted the Texas Fraternal Youth Spectacular in 1983 and only recently the press section of the National Fraternal Congress. At each meeting, birthday celebrants of the month are recognized and those celebrating wedding anniversaries.

The lodge has been growing membershipwise constantly due to the efforts of the team of active sales representatives who attend the seminars so they are well-informed of the changes that are made.

Delegates were elected to represent the lodge at the XXIV Convention in Corpus Chrsti this year; namely, Willie E. Kohutek, Jerry J. Pechal, Frank E. Klinkovsky, Dan F. Balusek, Adeline Kohutek, Alfred Klusacek, Woodrow Marek, Anton

If history did not repeat itself the younger generation and our new members would not know how a lodge got its beginning.

Eleven members braved the official dedication ceremonies of Lodge 54 in West which took place 4 December 1904 in McLennan County, Additional eleven members decided to transfer from a neighboring lodge to the newly-established lodge.

From its 22 members they elected its first slate of officers; namely, President Herman Holik, Vice President John Machac, Secretary Chas. Zapalec, Financial Secretary Robert Cervenka, Treasurer Albin Rydel, Guard Vine Hutyra, Inside Guard Will Tobola, and Outside Guard Chas. Zajicek.

In those early days, the progress seemed somewhat slow with many obstacles; organizers or sales representatives were not in the picture, therefore, the lodge had to rely on its membership to promote fraternal spirit in order to secure prospective members.

Within its next decade, a building was purchased in 1913 for approximately $1,400 known as Lone Star Hall. Meanwhile, as time was beginning to be favorable for buying land, a few acres were purchased on which the lodge home was erected.

The enrollment of members began to prosper and they were forced to obtain larger accommodations.

Presently, the lodge home structure is located in a rich suburban area where many new homes have been constructed; it is also near a hospital, rest home, high school and Trojan Field track and the new City Park. The lodge property has many oak and pecan trees ideal for park and/or picnic:, activities.

During the 1920s fire swept and destroyed the lodge building, causing hardship on its members who no longer had a place to hold meetings and functions. For the time being, rental was obtained from the Eagles Hall and Knights of Columbus from 1922 and 1928. At

last, in 1928 the lodge was financially able to construct a new building that would serve their purpose.

The members participated in numerous Czech plays in the 1930s that were staged at the Opera House (near its present City Hall building), under the direction of Dr. J. A. Pazdral who was known for writing and producing plays; some of these plays were presented in many Central and South Texas localities and at the State Fair on Czech Day at Dallas in 1933.

More members were acquired and they began to get involved in various lodge activities such as: meetings, reunions, weddings, picnics and banquets in the 40s, and 50s when the lodge was the center of attraction in our community. In those days during their annual meeting, a banquet was held to bring out the families and socialize together for a family affair type of entertainment. (According to some of the pictures taken at these type of activities reveal that 5 January 1947 was their biggest turnout.) Another featured annual attraction held on Fourth of July every year (during those years), people came from many surrounding communities to hear and learn what the speakers for state and government positions had to offer to their constituents. Among some of the speakers include the late Lyndon Baines Johnson and the retired U.S. Congressman Bob Poage who is an SPJST member of one of our neighboring lodges.

Then came along the 60s when the membership decided to have an active organizer to secure more members. Records indicate that the late Brother Joe Mazanec, Sr., was the "first" organizer for the lodge.

He also served our lodge efficiently while he held two offices — financial secretary and treasurer until he passed away. He was also very careful to enroll members who would retain their insurance policy and those who would not be delinquent in payments. He likewise

was careful of lodge responsibilities and kept the members informed at every meeting he attended. During this decade the lodge had remodeled its building to accommodate larger public affairs, whereby, an additional space was constructed on the south side of the structure. In the 60s Lodge 54 also co-hosted the 19th SPJST Convention at Waco in 1964.

During the 70s when the lodge continued making progress, the members voted to purchase three 20 ton air-conditioning units which were installed quickly as possible; the same units have served their purpose well and helped accommodate a comfortable atmosphere. In December of 1977, the former Lodge 126 at Ross merged with Lodge 54 in West and in the 1980 Convention it helped the lodge gain an extra delegate. A Jubilant occasion transpired 2 December 1979 when our lodge had its 75th celebration; the Planning Committee composed of Maxine Sefcik, chairman, Mona Zahirniak, John Mynar, Beanie Kacir and Robert Wright, did an outstanding job. A large turnout witnessed the occasion when the preceding lodge presidents were given recognitior for their services, House Representative Dan Kubiak gave the address, and the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra (under the direction of Brother Sid Pokladnik) presented rich entertainment that was broadcast live on KFRD Hillsboro by Brother Rudy Sefcik and Brother David Kolar, both members of Lodge 54. Then along came the bicentennial of our United States in 1976 and the West community wanted to undertake something that would create international recognition from year to year thereafter; now, the Westfest being in its 8th year, the members have involved themselves in numerous activities for the 2-day annual affair which is always celebrated on the Labor Day weekend (Saturday and Sunday).

(It is also interesting to know that the West Sesquicentennial Committee received approval for its 1986 festivities' plans and has set its

sanctioning ceremony for 10 a.m.

The West City Council approved the local committee's master plan for the city's Sesquicentennial activities scheduled for 1986. The City of West will now join other Texas cities in celebrating the state's 150th birthday in 1986. Mayor Adolph Muska, a member of our lodge, is on the Sesquicentennial Committee. This special project will also involve a large number of Lodge 54 members.)

Lodge officers serving in 1984 are: President Rudy Sefcik, Vice President Ted Kocian, Secretary/ English Reporter Anne Emery, Financial Secretary/Treasurer Maxine Sefcik, Youth Leader Mona Zahirniak, and Czech Reporter Jan Vaculik. Rudy Sefcik, a member of our lodge is also Editor of the Vestnik, The lodge recognizes 50-year members in conjunction with our meeting and dinner usually in the June meetings. A delicious meal and corsages or boutonnieres, also their membership pins (from the Society) are presented to them at these functions. Lodge 54 recent 50-year recipients included: Leon Motis (whose father, the late Tom Motis served as one of our lodge presidents), George Mikeska, Fr. R. Marek, Wilson Janek, Norma Scott, Edward G. and Margaret Sulak and 0. B. Walls.

Delegates to the 24th Convention include Ted Kocian, Maxine Sefcik, John Mynar, Mona Zahirniak and Beanie Kacir.

Much good fortune and a fruitful convention is wished to the XXIVth Convention and let us hope the proceeding of our SPJST Bylaws will "fit" our society's operation for the next four years instead of duplicating some other society's that may be regrettable by our delegates' decision. Lodge Slovanska Lipa (Slavonic Linden) No. 66 Waco, was chartered on August 16, 1906 but unfortunately the record of the char tering and up to 1912 were burned in a fire at the Maennerchor Hall and no records are available of the early officers of Lodge 66. The first available records start with the meeting of May 1912 at which time Victor Bunata was president and Leopold Macel was secretary. The lodge meetings were held in the Sokol Tyrs Hall located over a mercantile establishment at 3rd and Franklin Streets in Waco. Later the meetings were held at the Maennerchor and Labor Hall and sometimes in the law offices of Kacir and Kacir in the Provident National Bank building at 4th and Franklin Streets; all these buildings have since been demolished.

In the meeting of April 19th, 1914 a motion was made to build a new lodge hail on three city lots that were offered to the lodge for $25.00.

Brother M. J. Mazanec made a motion that this would not be enough room and the newlyappointed Building Committee, which was appointed, were instructed to look for a location outside of the city limits. The committee appointed consisted of the following members: Roman Parma, Sr., Victor Bunata, Roman Konvicka, M. J. Mazanec and Josef Dusek and they were instructed to report at the May meeting. The committee did not show up and no further mention is made of building a hall until the meeting of May 26th, 1917 when the lodge was offered a small hall on the Dallas Road; but, after consideration, that this place had a "wild" reputation, the offer was turned down.

In the July meeting of 1914 Brother J. R. Kubena, secretary of the SPJST Supreme Lodge, complimented Lodge 66 on the good progress it has made. Stating that he had no idea it would grow so fast when he helped charter it in 1906. In the November meeting of the same year, it was decided that future meetings of Lodge 66 be held at the Labor Hall which was located over another mercantile establishment on South 4th Street between Austin and Franklin Streets.

A 10-year Jubilee was held in August 1916 at which Brother Metod Pazdral was the chief speaker; Brother Pazdral was a prominent Czech attorney and active in anything that helped SPJST. The celebration was pronounced an outstanding success and resulted in a net profit of $67.30 for the lodge treasury. Later that year it was decided to move back to Sokol Tyrs Hall at 3rd and Franklin Streets and so it went changing the meeting place from one location to another and sometimes in the homes of members.

Shortly after the March meeting in 1950, Brother Otto Hanus, (who was the financial secretary) was transferred to Oklahoma City by his employers and no one wanted to hold office. Brother John Simcik made a trip to the Supreme Lodge offices at Fayetteville and asked that our lodge be disbanded.

Brother Edward L. Marek, active president of the Supreme Lodge counseled with Brother Sirncik and asked him to try to get a meeting together of as many Lodge 66

members together and see if a solution can be worked out. Brother Simcik got busy and a meeting was held at the home of Brother Roman Parma, Sr., and, at this meeting, Brother Ed G. Mazanec agreed to accept the office of financial secretary and it was agreed to meet once every three months. At this time Lodge 66 had 28 members who were located: three in California, one in Oregon, two in Dallas, one in Corpus Christi, and one in Czechoslovakia which left only 20 members who could become active.

Lodge 66 continued to hold quarterly meetings until June 26th, 1953 held at the home of Brother Ed G. Mazanec. In this meeting Brother Sid Pokladnik, president of District III and Johnny Hrabina, secretary of District III, visited our lodge and were invited to speak. Brother Pokladnik, in his talk, pointed out that to start Lodge 66 being active it was very important that we meet monthly and, at this meeting, it was decided that we meet monthly. It was also decided to ask Albert Casper, owner of Shady Rest Hall, to hold our meeting there. Shady Rest was not available for our next meeting and it was held a_t the home of Brother Otto Hanus.

In the July meeting Brother John Simcik made a motion that the wives or husbands who are not members should become members and Brother Hanus wrote up 11 new members. It was agreed that the next meeting be held at the Shady Rest, which was available for that meeting. Shortly after the July meeting Louis Wolf, husband of Sister Katerina Wolf, passed away unexpectedly. Sister Wolf was ill at the time herself and shortly after her husband's death, she called Brother Frank Parma and Brother Otto Hanus to her bedside and said that since neither Mr. Wolf nor herself had any relatives, she wanted to leave what was left of their property, after all expenses are paid, to Lodge 66 with which to help build a new hall. Brother George Kacir, an attorney at West, was called and Sister Wolf told Brother Kacir, in her own words what she wanted and a will was drawn.

Shortly after Sister Wolf passed away, and after all expenses were paid, the property was sold and some $2800 was realized and this with what Lodge 66 had in its treasury was the start of Linden Hall In our August meeting held at Shady Rest, the 11 members were initiated into our lodge and Brother Hanus appointed the following on ,he Building Committee: Brothers Frank Parma, Edwin Narovec, Anton Mazanec, John Simcik, Ed G. Mazanec and Chris C. Spence, Jr. to find a suitable location on which to build. In the October meeting the Building Committee reported that some five acres were available out of the August Hottman farm, one-half mile east of Elm Mott, for $650. It was voted to accept this bid and after all the legal proceedings, Lodge 66 became the proud possesor of a building site of our new hall. For the next several months our lodge held their meetings under the trees on the new site and after the meetings members who brought their tools, began to prepare the site for building.

In the early spring of 1955 a

contract was let to build a roof and walls of our hall and the members agreed to do the inside work themselves; the rest of that spring members spent every available hour they could from their employment to finish Linden Hall. The great day finally came and Linden Hall was dedicated on August 28, 1955 with hundreds of members from surrounding and distant lodges helping in the dedication. Lodges 84, Dallas and Lodge 88 Houston came by bus loads. Brother Anton.

Mazanec was president of Lodge 66 and officially cut the ribbon. The dedication was pronounced an outstanding success and many other lodge halls were patterned after Linden Hall.

Lodge 66 began to grow. Many new members were written up and it was soon found that the hall would have to be enlarged, and a year later, 32 feet were added to the original structure. Linden Hall became a popular place for area weddings, celebrations and enter tainments. It was again enlarged in 1958 to its present size. From 28 members in 1953, Lodge 66 has grown to over 1,700 members and keeps growing at every meeting and we hope it will continue to grow.

History of SPJST ,Lodge Borovy Haj-Pine Grove No. 74

Then along came 1977 and Sally Meyer and Mary Jo Bobalik, plus King Kenneth Ervin and Duke Jason Hodges represented our lodge at District II competition. In that year Kenneth and Jason placed as first runners-up.

Lodge 74 members are very active in community affairs, such as muscular dystrophy, Heart and Cancer Drives, donating to fire departments, ambulance service and nursing homes.

In addition to their numerous activities, the youth club participates in skating parties, in District Youth Talent at Youth Achievement Days and camp.

Linda Michka became youth leader in July and we started with a membership of six youngsters so we had to build our membership back up and prepare for 1981 District II summer activities and contests.

Under Linda Michka's leadership, the youth won many "first" awards, they also won first place on their float in the Crockett Christmas Parade. The club is happy to state that it now has approximately 28 members.

During 1981 the lodge had purchased a parking area, put up a fence and a metal building. In 1982 our youth club had achieved many

first awards on the State YAD level in arts/crafts, and talent.

We are fortunate to have an active youth club and thanks to the sales representatives who made it possible. Brother Chester Shmoldas, in the past years, was selected as the State's "Million Dollar Insurance Salesman." From 1971 to 1982 nine years of those he was top salesman of the year.

Although we are blessed with talented youth members, we also had an SPJST Scholarship recipient.

Kevin Flanagan in 1983 who won a $1,000 scholarship to a university of his choice. He was salutatorian of Crockett High School that year.

The lodge is proud to reveal that from 1979 to 1983, it ranked among the 10 top lodges in the state and presently it ranks the 7th in the state.

Serving as delegates to the SPJST Convention are Oliver Fowler, Jerry Michka, Linda Michka, Chester Shmoldas, Dorothy Smith, Hughie Smith, Creola Wilcox and James Wilcox.

Rozkvet Ruie (Blooming Rose) of Lodge 81 was organized July 25, 1909 by the president of the Supreme Lodge, of Fayetteville, Texas, J. R. Kubena.

Their charter members included Hynek Kubos, August Kubos, Charlie Kubos, Leo Peters, Anna Peters, Frank Kubos, John Kubos, Louis Bosak, Frank Bosak and Teresie Bosak.

Frank Matula, president; and Leo Peters, secretary were the first elected officers. The lodge meetings were held in the Vogelsang Hall and Neswadba Hall, in Rosenburg.

Their charter was transferred to Needville 11 December 1910, and plans were being made to construct a new hall. In the meantime lodge meetings were held in the home of John and Frances Lubojacky.

About 11/2 years later, a commit-

tee was elected to locate a small tract of land in Needville for Lodge No. 81. The lodge seal was changed from Rosenberg to Needville 12 July 1912. At this meeting it was voted to purchase two acres of land from Dr. Cloud, which is the present site of the lodge hall. Construction of the hall started, and the first meeting was held in the new hall on September 14, 1913.

A small portion of the lodge property on the west side of the hall and east of the old Highway 36 was sold February 12, 1933.

In those days the membership was approximately 100, and the lodge continued to slow prosper without too much activities.

Lodge 81 (Rozkvet Ruze), and Lodge 70 (Laskovost (Kindness) at Guy consented to merge because Lodge 70 was holding some of their

The merger of these two lodges took place 9 February 1949, and they decided to change the name of the lodge from Lodge 81 (Rozkvet Ruze) to Lodge No. 81 Needville. Supreme Lodge Vice President Edward L. Marek conducted the merger of these two lodges.

On the afternoon of September 4, 1910 Lodge 92 was organized at the home of Brother Frank Paprskar.

The first president was Joe Juran, Sr. Other officers were: Bohumil

Carboch, J. W. Cihacek, Rudolph Koci, Sr., Vancil Becan, Joseph Becan, Frank Zacek and Arnold Volka. At this time Joseph Becan is the only one of these members still living.

Wednesday, June 13, 1984--VESTMK/11 The first formal meeting was held September 11, 1910, the second Sunday of the month and now 74 years later we still meet on this date the second Sunday. As membership increased it was deemed necessary to build a formal place of assembly, so a joint lodge hail was erected with the Sokol organization. In 1919 Lodge 92 purchased the entire property. In due time it was again essential to the club's welfare to build another facility. It followed that on October 8, 1938 the present structure named "National Hall" was dedicated. At the time of construction, our location was in what was then considered a suburban area But now homes and businesses are all about. However, the attractive cream colored brick building sits comfortably on 5 acres of land with numerous shade trees, also the site for egg hunts at Eastertime for eager children.

Because of the hard work of many of the members, Lodge 92 has become the success that it is.

However, bad luck befell us in March 1979 as a disasterous fire ruined a great portion of National Hall. It was rebuilt with added improvements, an even finer dance floor and increased air-conditioning.

A lodge history would not be complete without mention of most of our lodge presidents. Their names and tenure of office are: J. R. Bartek, — 20 years, Joe Juran Sr.-10 years, Carl Zich — 9 years, Joe Paprskar — 8 years, Albert Kubala— 7 years,

Rudolph Koci, Sr.-4 years, Frank Paprskar —4 years, Joe Juran, Jr.3 years and Joe Botik — 2 years. The following served one year each: Robert Ruzicka, Al Kercho, Kenneth Krivanek, Joe Tabor, J. W. Cihacek, Joe Balleja and Frank Dobesh.

Lodge 92 has been supportive of many fraternal causes and projects.

A donation in 1957 was made to furnish two rooms in the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home and, in later years, an annual gift has been made to one or both homes. The latest support to a cause has been given to the Child Abuse program of the DHR and the local office of the Tarrant County DHR presented our lodge with a plaque of recognition for this action. Our goal for charitable donations is approximately one thousand dollars a year Since Lodge 92 has flourished, a number of advantages are available to members. Those over 65 years of age do not pay annual dues and the club furnishes food for all who attend the monthly meetings and at other functions on special occasions.

There are over 1800 members at this time and we have a fine team of insurance salesmen working to increase this number. Recently 20 members received 50-year membership pins.

God willing, may the group of people working at making this organization a success persevere in keeping it an asset to the community and a source of pride to all of its members.

History of Lodge 133

Lodge 133 members hosted two SPJST Conventions: The 18th one was held in 1960 when the first "Miss SPJST" contest composed of seven district queen candidates took place. Then (twenty years later) they found themselves confident to host another convention for the large number of delegates, which indeed was a royal treat both times by the host lodge. ALL OF THE MEMBERS OF LODGE 133 ARE SALUTED FOR THEIR GREAT EFFORTS! Brother Emil Matula serves on the SPJST Publication Committee as co-chairman, and he also served as chairman of the 23rd Convention Committee along with Brother Dominic Netek as co-chairman.

San Antonio lodge has several 50year members; namely, Martha Bransford, Alois L. Dressler, Bettie Naquin, Hildegard Balvin, Edw. J. Lukasik, Anna Mary Lukasik, Lillie Creech, and Jerome A. Sliva.

Delegates to the convention are Brother Emil Matula and Brother Dominic Netek.

mately 269 members. We have seven 50-year members. These are Brothers Frank A. Laznovsky, Jim Pavelka, and Joe Janousek; and Sisters Emily Vytopil, Bozena Brozek, Mildred Baker, and Annie Koubek.

Since the last convention we have lost five members: Brothers Hatten Collard and Jim Reeves, and Sisters Frances Laznovsky, Annie Hejny, and our lodge secretary of 25 years, Mary A. Laznovsky.

Although we are one of the smaller lodges, we have many activities which our lodge participates in Monthly meetings are held regularly. Each year we have an annual dinner for the membership.

At Christmas time we join Sokol, WFLA, and RVOS in sponsoring a party for the youngsters. Our members fully support our home organization, the Sokol, in all of its activities.

We continue to be active in the Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council and its many worthy causes. We are extremely proud of our accomplishments in connection with SPJST's efforts for the Child Abuse program. Our lodge held a raffle and several stew dinners. Through our efforts we were able to contribute $1,300 to this worthy cause.

San Antonio, Texas Brother K. J. Hanak called together a number of Czech people residing in San Antonio for the purpose of organizing a SPJST Lodge in this area This first meeting, held at the Crockett Hotel, was the initial step in the organization of SPJST Lodge 133.

The charter was approved on March 18, 1917 in ceremonies conducted at the Woodsmen of the World Hall located at 822 E. Houston St. Forty-six persons attended the ceremony including out-of-town guests from Yorktown, Floresville and West Texas. The first officers were Brother Fred Maly, President; Sister Haas, Secretary; K. J. Hanak, Bookkeeper; Sister Rose Gold, Treasurer; K. Fajgil, Guide; Josef Vanek, Guide; L. Steffek, Outside Guard; Ed Valicek, Inside Guard.

In 1962 meetings were moved

from the old Woodsmen of the World Hall. Meetings are currently held at Woodsmen of the World Hall, 1505 S. Gevers, every third Sunday of the month. Brief History of Lodge 155, Austin

By Diana Pelzel First officers elected on November 7, 1937 were: Frank Havlak, Sr.— president, Henry Mazur— vice president, Bedrich Socha--secretary, W. J. Drgac —Financial Secretary and Otto Bubenik —treasurer.

Lodge 160 was organized and chartered November 7, 1937 at St. Anthony Hall which was located 10 miles east of San Angelo on the Eola Road in a farming community. This hall was partially owned by Brothers Otto Bubenik, Frank Havlak, Sr., Henry Mazur and John Dorotik; some of our SPJST brothers living in the immediate area, who were members of Lodge 49, Pokrok, Rowena, had promised to transfer their memberships and work toward the organization of the new lodge.

By Raymond Prasatik Hlava Texasu Lodge No. 155 received its charter with installation ceremonies at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John B. Hejl in Austin 11 March 1935. President C. H. Chernosky, Secretary J. R. Kubena and Treasurer Edward L. Marek were among the officiating officers attending.

Ten charter members attended their "first" meeting in the Waggoner Hall at the University of Texas. Officers elected were: President John B. Hejl, Vice President Dr. Eduard Micek, Secretary/Treasurer Raymond Prasatik, and Warden John J. Mares. Most of their meetings were held in members' homes and later at Club Houses and Bank Board Rooms when available.

Somewhat small in membership, the lodge grew steadily participating in notable events during the years such as the Majales Festivals promoted by the Slavonic Department of University of Texas and the Czech University of Texas

Club. Many of the students became our members as a result. The all-out contribution of our lodge to the success of Czech Festival featured by the Girl Scouts which won national acclaim and the assist given the Supreme SPJST officials and the crew members of the Bomber "Spirit of SPJST" during its dedication in Austin in 1932, is worthy of mention. During war-time soldiers were welcomed into the homes of our members as well as students and the Hejl family home was always the gathering place.

Our lodge continues to be active in the community and our members have been increasing although still far from the potential which it has.

Lodge 155 officers for 1984 are: President Alice Prasatik, Vice President Gerard Chmelir, Secretary/Financial Secretary Raymond Prasatik, Treasurer John B. Hejl, and Honorary President is Sister Lillie Hejl.

History

When grounds were fairly wellestablished for organizing a new lodge, Brother Bedrich Socha wrote SL Secretary J. R. Kubena and asked him to send an experienced organizer to help establish a new lodge. In mid-October Brother Ignac Senkyrik was sent and he and other interested brothers began crisscrossing the eastern part of Tom Green County. In a few weeks enough members were acquired to organize the new lodge and the date for chartering was set. All agreed in naming the new lodge after the late T. G. Masaryk, an outstanding man in the history of Czechoslovakia.

At the time of organization and chartering there were 16 charter members and 16 transfer members making a total of 32 members.

In November 1949 one of our diligent organizers, Brother Sedrich Socha, now deceased, wrote in a history of Lodge 160 of the day that it was organized and chartered.

According to Brother Socha the weather was beautiful and the BacaRipple Band was playing Czech music to gladden our hearts. There were so many people there that Brother Edward L. Marek was moved, to say that he never thought there were so many Czech people in West Texas."

SL President C. H. Chernosky brought the meeting to order and the new candidates were introduced into the lodge and installment ceremonies were conducted by Brother Kubena.

By 1949 our membership grew to 160 members.

By 1951 our membership grew to 231 members.

By 1972 our membership grew to 354 members.

By 1978 our membership grew to 457 members.

A turning point in the historical development of our lodge took place December 14, 1969 under'the leadership of SYD James Janousek, DYD Mary Haisler, District IV Director R. E. Broz and Sisters Agnes Michalik, Betty Mika, Beatrice Socha and Diana Pelzel. A youth club was organized which brought the lodge members back together after a few years of very poorly-attended meetings. It was at this time we began having a free meal on an annual basis and this brings out a large percent of our membership.

A Brief History Of Lodge 179, Warrenton In the fall of 1973, Sis. Evelyn Mikeska of Houston, Dist. V Sales Representative, who owns property with her husband (now deceased) in the Warrenton area, approached Sis. Dorothy Oltmann of Warrenton about becoming a member and sales representative for the SPJST. Sis. Oltmann responded by joining the SPJST October 1, 1973 and becoming a sales representative at about the same time. Sis. Mikeska owned some property across the road from Bro. Harold Bergmann's property that he was interested in purchasing. In the negotiating talks, a sort of "lady's and gentleman's" agreement was that Sis. Mikeska would sell him the small tract of land if he would become a member of the SPJST. By early fall 1975, the membership was such that it was decided to formally organize Lodge No. 179, and this was done September 3rd, 1975, when State Field Manager Bro. Silas Smith travelled to Warrenton for that purpose. That meeting was held in Zapp's Kitchen in Warrenton. Others present at that meeting included District I Director John Kubena, Sis. Jeanette (Silas) Smith, Dist. I YC Lola Vavra, Dist. I SR Ben & Martha Trcalek, Dist. V SR Evelyn Mikeska, Dist. I President Willie Trcalek and Dist. I Vice Pres. Clint Luksa.

Approximately 21 members were present at that organizational meeting.

Officers elected at that time included President Harold Bergmann, Vice President Elgene Eckermann, Secretary Terry Roemer, Financial Secretary Dorothy Oltmann, Treasurer Lee J. Leonhardt, and YL Margie Koopmann. Today, the officers remain the same, except that Terry Roemer has been replaced by Dennis Roemer, and Doris Eckermann replaced Margie Koopmann as youth leader.

In recent weeks, the lodge also elected Gene Ha.ckernack as lodge reporter. (Bro. Hackemack left for an overseas assignment the 20th of August in Iran where he was a medic attached to a subsidiary of Brown & Root Construction Co. of Houston).

Since the organization of the lodge, Sis. Dorothy Oltmann (now deceased) and Sis. Mikeska each wrote up approximately 50% of the new members. Sis Doris Eckermann became a sales representative on the 11th of August and has also been successful in writing up new members.

The Chartering of SPJST Lodge 179 at Warrenton took place 12 September 1976 in the Round Top Rifle Association Hall, one mile east of Round Top on FM 1457, which turned out to be a huge success.

The lodge has progressed nicely from then on and also has an active youth club that has won many state and district awards in Youth Achievement Days. The young and old members continue having a nice gathering on a monthly basis at Zapp's Kitchen in Warrenton.

Lodge 183 Mid-Cities was formally chartered Sunday, May 20, 1978 at the lodge home of Lodge 180 at Burleson with a dinner and dance.

In September 1980, Robert and Pat Sill, B. J. and Betty Hlavaty, Daniel and Mary Ann Roznovsky, Albert and Inez Greenlees, and Norman Kneschk purchased bonds and leased the building on 1220 Arkansas Lane for the first lodge home and, in 1983, the members voted to buy a new building for a new hall. After a few delays the members moved the equipment into the hall in January 1984, and at this time are planning the formal dedication some time in mid-1984.

The present officers are: President Phill Boyle, 1st Vice President Pat Sill, 2nd Vice President Lambert Pustejovsky, Secretary Jeanie Roznos, Financial Secretary Daniel Roznovsky, Treasurer Inez Greenlees.

The Board of Trustees are: Robert and Pat Sill, B. J. and Betty Hlavaty, Daniel and Mary Ann Roznovsky, Inez Greenlees and Norman Kneschk.

Building Committee consists of Phill .Boyle, Lambert Pustejovsky, Daniel Roznovsky, Inez Greenlees and Norman Kneschk.

Daniel Roznovsky is serving as delegate and B. J. Hlavaty is the alternate.

History Of New Moulton Lodge No. 184 At one time in Moulton, Texas there were two SPJST lodges and after realizing the small membership of the former Lodge 27 it decided it would be best to, someday, merge with their neighboring lodge (the former No. 165) and become a more active lodge in the community.

Finally, the merger of Lodges 27 Pokrok Moulton and Culak No. 165 officially merged July 9, 1975. State Field Manager Silas Smith presided at their meeting, which was held in the American Legion Post No. 392 Hall in Moulton. There were approximately 23 members in attendance plus a few visitors.

Off and on the merger of Lodges Pokrok Moulton and Lodge- Culak had been discussed among the members of both lodges. The voting on the merger in both lodges was decided and announced after both lodges approved, a date was also set for an official from the Home Office to be present and preside over the merger meeting.

Brother Frank Wagner opened the meeting and welcomed the members. He also advised the attending members that Brother Silas Smith would explain the absence of one of the officers from the Home Office why he couldn't be present. Their district's director was also unable to be present at the meeting because he was attending a meeting at the Supreme Lodge in Temple.

Prior to the election of officers, Brother Smith presided over the

14/VESTNfK—Wednesday, June 13, 1984 joint meeting. During the merger of these two lodges, there were approximately 428 certificates in force.

In their joint meeting the members also decided to hold their meetings every second Wednesday of the month. Their sales representatives were Brothers Jerome Vasek, A. J. Vana and William Miculka.

Brother Smith then installed the new officers of the merged lodges.

Their new president elected was Brother Ed Mikes, and Vice President Jerome Vasek agreed to appoint committees and have them approved at the next meeting.

The members agreed to name the new lodge as Moulton Lodge No. 184, and their meetings would be held monthly and hold quarterly socials (serve food and refreshments).

The 1984 records reveal that Lodge 184 has 429 members. This year's 50-year members are Hugo Barak, Emil Tousek and Ida Kubicek. Others were Terezia Selzer, Mary Valenta and Fr. J. Miculka.

Lodge 184 also supports charitable organizations and the lodge has donated $100.

The present local lodge officers are: President Jerome Vasek, Vice President Herman Kurtz, Secretary Frank C. Wagner, Financial Secretary Alfons Vana, and Treasurer Jim Filipp.

Serving as delegates to the 24th SPJST Convention are Helen Vasek and Jerome Vasek.

Dear Members: After it appeared in print in the Vestnik of May 30th, I realized that one of my statements ,could be misinterpreted. I refer to the statement that the president of the Supreme Lodge, as Chief Executive Officer, signs the Annual Statement submitted to the State Board of Insurance and by virtue of his signature he assumes the responsibility for the accuracy and veracity of that voluminous document, even though most of it is prepared by the other officers and a small portion by the actuary. Perhaps I should have stated: "assumes a portion of the responsibility . . ." I did not state that I was the only person to sign the document when in fact, the other three officers here also affix their signatures. I offer my apologies for what may have been misunderstood or misinterpreted by some people, although no one has contacted me about this I have always gone out of my way never to demean the roles and responsibilities of my, fellow Supreme Lodge officers.

Another case in point is the usual Triennial Examination by an Examiner from the State Board of Insurance. I say triennial because they normally come and examine us every three years, but they can and have come more often than that. In the case of that Annual Statement, inquiries from the State Board and requests for clarification on a number of points were recently addressed to me as president. This is their normal operating procedure.

I then proceeded to answer the letter after consulting with the officers responsible for that information.

A Change Of Mind. I think it is reasonable, perhaps even commendable, when a person decides to change his position on a matter after listening further to the pros and cons on that matter. I don't think it is particularly wise to cling steadfastly to an opinion, even though there is reasonable evidence to the contrary.

Earlier this year I submitted a proposal to the By-Law Committee that only one person from the same household would be eligible for mileage reimbursement to and from the convention. At the time that appeared to be a reasonable and fair proposal, especially since it was tracking the recommendation of the Finance Committee in the last convention and there was no groundswell of opposition or unfavorable comments against it, although there were a few "rumbles" here and there. In the meantime, this proposal has gotten a

lot of thought and consideration by well-meaning and reasonable people.

I was at the District II meeting when this matter was discussed and I suggested that their member on the By-Law Committee present this for consideration to that committee and try to address the problem with some sort of proposal. I agree with the expressed opinions of the District II members that each delegate is a delegate in their own right, elected as individuals and not as husband and wife or other relatives from the same household.

They do not go to the convention as a team. Each one fulfills the obligations and meets the qualifications of being a delegate on their own; they don't do it as relatives or as husband and wife.

This is also unfair to those members of committees who may have to travel to Corpus Christi on committee work well ahead of the other person from that household because of work or family obligations. They would have to travel separately, but as it is being proposed, only one would get reimbursed.

Each delegate should be considered as a separate individual and reimbursed accordingly. There will be more delegates from the same household attending this convention than ever before so it is a foregone conclusion that travel expense will be greater if the above is approved, but it will also be more equitable and fair. I urge adoption of the District II proposal, as discussed in their meeting and set forth in the Vestnik of May 30, 1984, p. 4.

I agree that our membership, which includes the delegates to the coming convention, are reasonably well informed, well-intentioned people and quite capable of thinking for themselves. They always have and this convention will be no exception.

I have not had the time or the opportunity to do any more traveling or personal communicating than has been necessary to perform my duties of office. I've been on the job. Most of my, thoughts and positions have been communicated to you by way of the Vestnik since the first of the year. I look forward to seeing and greeting all of you in Corpus Christi.

Lodge 13 Sets June 17th Meeting Dear Members: Dime Box Lodge No. 13 had their last monthly meeting Sunday, May 20, 1984. President Claude Flippin called the meeting to order at approximately 2:05 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance being recited by all.

Roll call of officers showed: 8 present and 5 absent. All reports were approved and accepted as read.

In new business Brother Frank Balcar asked permission from the hall to use the trash barrels for Frankie Riske Day for June 9th; the hall approved the decision to let Brother Balcar have use of the trash barrels.

Mary Jean Daily was accepted as a new member to our lodge.

Complaints about checking IDs too closely: President Claude Flippin asked for everyone's cooperation since this is one of our methods for stopping minors from drinking.

The hall was asked for the use for a wrestling match with all the money going to Lee County and surrounding counties to help the needy children. The hall gave permission as long as all monies for donations toward this cause were given.

There being no further business door prizes were drawn next. First prize went to Claude Flippin, second—Doris Balcar, 3rd —Keith Spitzenberger.

President Claude Flippin then adjourned the meeting at approximately 3:10 p.m. Our next meeting will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 17th. I hope to see you there!

Lodge Recognizes 50-Year Members West

Lodge 54 in West held its second quarterly meeting and recognized the 50-year members June 3, 1984.

The meeting was called to order

by President Rudy Sefcik at 2 p.m.

All present, at the meeting, stood and recited the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag and remained standing for a few moments of silence in honor of all lodge brothers and sisters who have departed from us.

Roll call of officers was held by Secretary Emery and all were present.

Financial Secretary and Treasurer Maxine Sefcik gave the financial reports on the insurance account and hall account; both reports were accepted as read.

Secretary Ann Emery read the minutes of the March 4th meeting; these were accepted as read. Correspondence to the lodge was also read.

A motion was entertained by Vice President Ted Kocian to have a special called meeting with the Sokol group on the second Monday in July (9th) if there is need for it This motion was seconded and passed. This will be a very important meeting for our lodge and

it is imperative that as many members as can attend this meeting because some major decisions will be made that will affect the entire lodge. This meeting (if called) will be announced in future issues of the Vestnik so let's be sure and read it.

President Sefcik asked all members present if anyone had any questions regarding bylaws or anything that needed to be discussed with the convention delegates.

There were no comments so the delegates were asked to vote their conscience.

The premium refund check recipients were named by Sister Sefcik and the checks were dis tributed to the present ones after the meeting.

Lodge 54 acquired three new members; Matthew D. Scott, Ronald Wayne Price and Dorman L. Dollins.

Rudolph Janek transferred his membership to Lodge 66.

Presentation of 50-year membership pins was held by President Sefcik. Honorees present included Leon Motis, George Mikeska, Edward G. and Margaret Sulak, Frank R. Marek, and Henry Grossman accepted the pin for 0. B. Walls; and Norma Scott, and Wilson Janek were unable to be present.

Youth Leader Mona Zahirniak presented an anniversary cake and a lovely corsage, also boutonnieres to the honorees, after which pictures were taken by Jan Vaculik.

Sister Mona Zahirniak read the names of the 1984 Lodge 54 graduates who were nearly all at one time part of the group when the youth club was reactivated in the 70s; namely, Troy Lynn Gerik, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Gerik, Elaine Junek, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Lawrence Junek, David Maler, son of Mr. and Mrs. James A. Maler, John Mitchell, son of Mrs. Lenora Eisma, Darrel Picha, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albin Picha, Edwin (Bubba) Sefcik, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Sefcik, Helaine Wernet, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Wernet, Jr., and Jackie Zahirniak, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest G. Zahirniak.

Debbie Marek, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Marek, was selected salutatorian from Abbott High School. Our sincere congratulations to all of these fine young people for this accomplishment. This is the largest single group of graduates our lodge has had.

Brother Sefcik expressed appreciation to Brother John Sulak for all the help he has given to the lodge, even on some instances when was out of town. This is greatly appreciated by all members and Brother Sulak should be commended for his care and concern for our lodge.

Brother Johnny Krizan of our neighboring Lodge 6 addressed the membership on behalf of his candidacy for substitute director of District III. Margaret Sulak drew for the door prize which was won by John Sulak.

Our third quarterly meeting will be held September 9th. The meeting was adjourned and everyone enjoyed refreshments and a delicious spaghetti dinner. Many thanks to Sister Maxine Sefcik, Brother John and Sister Willie Mae Sulak for preparing this wonderful meal. Also thanks to all the lodge sisters who brought pastries.

I was talking to Josephine Bishop and found out that she had been cleaning her house and had an accident by fracturing her vertibrae; having two accidents in just a few months is enough for you, so watch out next time.

I understand that Randy Stonaker had knee surgery May 24th (football knee); he is doing fine so don't take any chances, Randy, and do something foolish and mess your knee up, because you can bet it will be worse and maybe mess up your leg for good; give it time and it will heal fine for you.

We were sorry to hear about Gladys Drawe passing away and who was buried May 29th; she was the daughter-in-law of Mrs. Albina Drawe. Mrs. Albino. Drawe, the late Mrs. Joe Fusig and I played quite a

few games of dominoes on Saturday nights.

Our good members, Bill and Evelyn Vornsand, lost her 23-yearold nephew Mark Anthony Kocich, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elvin Kocich of Sugarland who accidently drowned in Canyon Lake while 3 couples were camping out. He was frying chicken and became hot so he said he was going to cool off. He leaves his parents, 3 brothers, 3 sisters, and the girlfriend he was to marry the first of the year. May our prayers be with our departed ones.

We have new grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Poston who are proud of their granddaughter born June 1st at 1:30 p.m. to parents, Mack and Trisha.

Susan and I will be leaving Thursday, June 7th for California, also Salt Lake, Utah and Denver, Colorado; we will be gone until June 25th, so this may be my last letter until I get back.

Our lodge sister, Rose Tanecka, director of this program, has arranged for the following bands; Neal Hart and the Wranglers, Texas Brew, Original River Road Boys, Country Motion, Amarillo and Leon Ranch and the Texas Playboys. What a line-up of some fantastic country-western music. Dancing begins at 1 p.m. and will continue until 8 p.m. Food and drinks will be available. The donation will be $10 per person which is tax deductible. We hope to have some of the leading radio station disc jockeys to appear and our special guests will be Miss Judy Hay and some of the children from the child abuse home. Make plans to attend this worthy cause.

In September we will have Al Pierson and Big Band USA appearing and plans are being made for our annual anniversary event scheduled for Nov. 4th. More information later regarding these two events.

Coming Events At Lodge 183, Mid-Cities Dear Members: For all of you members and friends who are not going to the convention, there will be a dance at the lodge hall June 16 with music by Blue Grass and Old-time Country and western band. Be sure to bring all of your friends and relatives for a ball at the lodge hall. This band has played for Lodge 1983 before and everyone enjoyed their music. And from those going to the convention, they will send their best wishes and will be thinking of you.

The next regular meeting will be Sunday, July 8; be there and hear what your delegate will have to tell you about the convention in Corpus Christi.

Coming dances for the lodge are: July 28th, August 18th and September 15th, the music will be by the Blue Grass and Old Style Country. Then, on October 20th will be Ennis Country Boys, November 3rd the Czechmates, and for New Year's Eve the Rejeek Polka Band.

Remember, in the last newsletter, I told that a good speaker had to be able to speak louder than the stereo, now I will tell you my knowledge of stereo; my dog is a woofer, my bird is a tweeter, and my mother-in-law is the loudest speaker in the house.

Meeting For Lodge 185 Dear Members and Friends: Lodge No. 185 of New Braunfels held its regular monthly meeting, May 20 in conjunction with our annual Spring Fling.

We met in beautiful Landa Park under the shade of its stately trees.

Everyone enjoyed a delicious barbecue dinner prepared by our barbecue expert Charlie Schandua.

Dominoes and other games were also enjoyed by the members. We had four guests present.

Our annual Polka, Fest is coming soon. This year it will be held in Eagles Hall, July 22; the music will be furnished by Hi-Toppers and the Little Fisherman both of New Braunfels. Dancing will be from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m., but our meals will begin serving at 11:30 a.m. It will consist of turkey and dressing with all the trimmings. We're hoping for a nice turnout and enjoyment for all.

Our next regular monthly meeting will be held one week early on June 14 which is due to the Convention and Polka Fest preparations.

Lodge 187 Gets Ready For Convention The regular meeting of Lodge 187 was held Sunday, May 27 at 6 p.m.

Roll call of officers showed all present, except Edward Volek, Gene Landry and Wilbert Nelson.

The main topic of discussion was the convention to be held in Corpus Christi June 17-19. All the delegates are looking forward to working with the other lodges represented for a long-range future for all SPJST lodges.

We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all those who assited in making our 1984 Mayfete another huge success. It is very refreshing to see all the young men and ladies dressed so nicely (and colorfully too, I might add). Once again, our youth members showed us what SPJST is all about; nurtur-

ing the youth of today, setting high standards for them to live by tomorrow and reassuring the adult world that not all today's teens run wild in the streets. Thanks to functions like Mayfete, YAD's, and other organized youth activities, SPJST young people become responsible adults. We are looking forward to the District II YAD in TaDor and hope many young people districtwide will be participating.

By the way, Bob Griffith, you did another fine job as MC for our Mayfete; won't be long and you will be a pro!

Although it was a bit soggy, we had several people turn out to ride our float in the Pflugerville Deutschenpfest Parade, May 19th. Victor Kunz and Henry Wobus, thanks for all your carpentry skills in building the frame. Arnold Leschber was our designer for the stand our queen and princess used; "Thank you, Arnold."

Our "carpet" layers for the float, Norman and Nancy Fuessell, Wilbert and Lucille Klaus, Henry and Paula Wobus, Arnold and Allene Leschber and Victor and Flora Kunz did a super job in getting the frame covered. I was unable to be there, so I hope I didn't miss anyone; if I did, please accept my apologies and know that your work was well appreciated. We have several more parades to show off our new float (Georgetown) Williamson County Sheriff's Posse Rodeo Parade, Frontier Days Parade (Round Rock—July), and possibly Taylor.

Mark your calendars for the next lodge meeting, June 24 at 6 p.m. with a covered dish meal to follow.

Please come join us; we would truly like to see a larger turnout for all our meetings. It is at the lodge meetings and board meetings that we get ideas and information from our members. Unless we hear from you at these times, it is rather difficult to know or learn some new and fresh ideas for lodge activities.

Our youth club is a busy little group these days. Activities are on an increase and, hopefully, member participation will grow as well. They are getting all geared up for YAD and camp. Thanks so much to Guy and Jeannie Hilsabeck for all the time, effort and energy being poured out for these young people, and we must not forget Ken and Nathan for their moral support!

Remember the District II fall meeting will be held at our Lodge 187, Round Rock in August. We hope Lodge 187 will have good participation by its members. August 19th is the date to mark on your calendar for this event.

Pre-Convention Comments Dear Bro. Editor and Readers: In this last issue before the convention, I would like to discuss mainly the SPJST VESTNIK and our "freedom of the press".

Before doing so, however, I must try to make amends for some wrong information I included in my letter published in the June 6 issue.

Correction

Brother Sidney Kacir has advised me that the By-Law Committee (BLC) Recommendations, as published in the April 18 issue, call for the Supreme Lodge to remain unchanged at 12 members, made up of the seven District Directors and the five Principal Officers.

I had based part of my letter in the June 6 issue on my erroneous understanding that the Supreme Lodge would consist of only the seven directors. Perhaps I was overreacting to the arguments of Pres.

Morris in the May 30 issue concerning these proposed changes.

I apologize for the misinformation and for the concern it may have caused anyone.

Reading Carefully I have been urging delegates to ask questions. Now I have to urge them to read very carefully, to avoid any unhappy experiences such as the one I have just acknowledged and have endeavored to correct.

BLC/VESTNIK The BLC Recommendations published in the April 18 issue made very few changes in the VESTNIK and Publication Committee. The meeting frequency for the Publication Committee was the only significant one I could find.

In the May 30 issue (pages 4 and 5), Sister Evelyn Salac (Secretary for the Lodge 84 Delegates) and Sister Frances Olexa had two separate letters recommending that the Publication Committee be made up of only three appointed members, instead of the seven elected members presently required.

Sister Salac's letter also recommended that any editor, after the present editor retires, be appointed and have his salary set by the Supreme Lodge, instead of the convention delegates.

Bases for Recommendations I assume that these were independent recommendations made for what they believe are good reasons, although they did not give those reasons.

I personally cannot support those recommendations because I feel that they would centralize control of the VESTNIK in the SL and would abandon the "freedom of the press" which we have cherished so long in our country and quite uniquely in our SPJST.

Some may contend that this recommended change would be better for the SPJST because the SL (of the future) would control what was put in the VESTNIK; therefore it would present a better image of the SPJST to the members and the public.

They forget that it might be better for the home office, but not necessarily better for the members whom it is intended to serve in our democratic society.

If the Editor were to lose the independence he now enjoys, he might prefer to print what would let him keep his job rather than what might be the best for the SPJST. Quality of VESTNIK Another letter in the May 30 issue was very critical of the content and make-up of the VESTNIK. There may be some merit in what Bro. Cecil Dickson's friend says, but we must realize that, to a certain extent, "quality, like beauty, lies in the eyes of the beholder".

24/VESTNIK-Wednesday, June 13, 1984 We need to reconsider what we want in the VESTNIK, how much we are willing to pay for it, and then write by-laws or resolutions charging the Publication Committee and Editor with producing it,. I am sure the job would be well done.

We can go from the extreme of a pulpy, newsy, membership-oriented, information-and-views-exchange type of publication to the other extreme of a slick-paper, color, home-office-oriented PR-type publication, or something in between. Maybe we could have both.

Previous Efforts At every other convention or so, there have been efforts to do away with the independence of the VESTNIK and Publication Committee on the basis of quality, efficiency, and economy. Thus far, every one of these efforts have been resisted by the delegates. I hope that will again prove to be the case.

"Freedom of the press" is not something you can disregard for four years to see if things will be better without it. They probably would not be, but you probably would never read in the press that they were not.

Houston Texas June 2, 1984 Dear Members and Friends: In last week's Vestnik of May 30, 1984 (and other weeks) surprisingly, we may find many directions in managing our SPJST in the future.

Let's see for a moment the advice given.

First of all, something new in our SPJST history to be found, is to elect the first woman to preside in the president's chair. Reading the qualifications as given for this position: very poor and impossible with so little knowledge for the highest position.

I may say, with my sons' college education, of which I am very proud would, no way, give me knowledge to lead the SPJST. As long as I remember, our present president and all the past presidents served our order well. President Nick Morris, for the past 16 years, guided us well.

Where is it written, the office of the president is only a public relations position? With no connection of insurance or investments.knowledge or other, it is very funny to think it would take 2 four year terms for the president to have difficulties to come up with new ideas. Our President Nick Morris has no difficulties to innovative new ideas for the future, as we all know..

The Czech Ex-Students Association of Texas (CESAT) The Texas Council of Higher Education Officers and members of the Czech Ex-Students Association Texas (CESAT) held their annual meeting Saturday, May 26, 1984 at the Parish Hall in Moravia, Texas, and elected the following slate of officers for the 1984-1985 term.

President-Marvin Marek, Vice President —Emil Stavinoha, Sec./Treas. - Mae Kainer.

Officers elected to positions on the Texas Council for Higher Education (Texaska Matice VyS'§iho Vzdelani) which is a branch of CESAT and maintains and controls the student loan program of CESAT were as follows: Secretary — Clinton Machan, Treasurer — Ace Chlapek, Accountant — Helen Pavelka.

Guests attending the meeting were, Mr. Jan Vaculik, editor of the Hospodar, Mr. Al Prochaska, president of the Czech Heritage Society of South Texas, and Mrs. Gail Zaruba, publicity director of this society. Mr. Prochaska and Mrs. Zaruba outlined the plans for the Czech Festival to be held at the Bay Front Exhibit Hall in Corpus Christi Saturday, March 2, 1985.

Announcement was also made of the St. Cyril and St. Methodious Czech Mass and celebration at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Houston Sunday, July 8. This CzechSlovak program will be attended by a Polish Catholic bishop from Ohio, and also a Slovenian group from Ohio.

(April 16, 1983) were read by Secretary/Treasurer Marvin Marek and approved as amended.

Director of Public Relations Charles Heyda reported on the program for Czech language study at Charles University sponsored by the Czechoslovak Foreign Institute (CSUZ) this summer. A total of 26 students, varying in ages from 15 to 65, will, leave for Prague June 28 for 3 weeks of Czech language study and cultural tours of Prague and other sections of Czechoslovakia.

Included in this group are 8 students from the University of Texas, four from a University of Kansas Adult Education class and students from various adult education classes in Houston and other parts of Texas.

Mrs. Lillian Pivonka gave a report on the activities in the loan program of the Texas Council for Higher Education, and also on the collection of Czech song boks, records and tapes now available for CESAT members. Mrs. Pivonka was commended for her work in keeping CESAT members informed of club activities and programs via the CESAT Newsletter.

Mr. Calvin Chervenka reported that CESAT had received a donation of $150.00 from KJT and $250.00 from RVOS which is to be used for a scholarship program. Mr. Chervenka stressed the need for the various committees to develop more active programs, and to maximize the potential of CESAT in the promotion of the teaching of the Czech

language and study of Czech culture in Texas.

Mr. Albert Blaha furnished a very complete report on the Czech Sym posium which was held in Temple last May. With the change of officers applications for membership in CESAT should now be addressed to Mrs. Mae Kainer, secretarytreasurer of CESAT, 2003 Hollow Hook, Houston, Texas 77080, Members who were not present at the May 26 meeting are urged to renew their membership by sending their annual dues ($2.50; students $1.00) to Mrs. Kainer.

This covers the Denton Tournament during the April 27th and 28th weekend. Friday, April 27, we played the Denton team at 7:30 p.m. and we lost by a score of 7 to O. Lionel Schulz was the losing pitcher allowing 9 hits, 1 walk and 2 strikeouts.

Hitters for our team were few, Paul Bartos had a single and Lionel Schulz had a walk and a single.

Our next game was played Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. against the Carswell AFB team from Ft. Worth and we won by a score of 7 to 2. Lionel Schulz was the winning pitcher allowing 5 hits, 2 walks and 5 strikeouts.

Leading hitters included Kerry Goad with a single and a double, Don Lennox with a double and a single, Don Jarma with 2 singles, Lionel Schulz with a single and a triple and Ben'Downey had 2 singles.

We played immediately following this game against North Texas of Ft. Worth and we were blasted by a very strong team by a score of 9 to 2.

Lionel Schulz again had to pitch and allowed 14 hits, 2 walks and 2 strikeouts.

Hitters were Kerry Goad with 2 singles, Don Lennox, a double and Don Jarma had a single.

Our league game No. 3 was played Tuesday night, May 8 against

Adairs and we won by a score of 8 to 2. Lionel Schulz was the winning pitcher allowing 6 hits, 1 walk and 4 strikeouts.

Leading hitters were Ben Downey with 2 singles and a walk, Tim Hays with a single and a walk, Dan Palm with a double, Tom Stites with a single, Kerry Goad with a single, Don Jarma with a walk, Don Lennox, a walk and Lionel Schulz had a single.

Our May 1st game was rained out and will be played later.

Saturday April 28th weekend, we played in the Ft. Worth tournament.

Our first game was at 8:30 p.m. against McGregors from Wichita Falls. We really took a beating: a 15 to 1 loss. Lionel Schulz was the losing pitcher and also pulled a charley horse and things were really looking bad for us. Also our hitting was nice, because Danny Yates had a single, Kerry Goad had a single, Don Jarma had a walk and Paul Barton had a single and drove in our only run. Everything they did was right and everything went wrong for us, batting and otherwise.

We played our second game at 12 noon against the Ft. Worth Merchants and we won by a score of 9 to 0. Tommy Yates was the winning pitcher allowing 1 hit, 2 walks and 4 strikeouts.

Hitters were Ben Downey with a single, Kerry Goad had a single and a walk, Don Jarma, a walk, Paul Bartos, a double and, a single, Danny Yates, a single, Darrell Clements, a single and Ron Bliss had a walk.

Game No. 3 was played at 1 :30 p.m. against the Ft. Worth Rooki.c by a score of 5 to 4. The winning run was scored on a homerun by Don Jarma in the bottom of the 7th inning.

Lionel Schulz, with his leg taped, unable to run, was the winning pitcher allowing 4 hits, 3 walks and 3 strikeouts.

Leading hitters included Don Jarma with a single, a sacrifice and a homerun, Paul Bartos, 2 singles, Kerry Goad, a single and a walk, Ben Downey, a single, Lionel Schulz, a sacrifice, Darrell Clements, a single and Ron Bliss, a double.

I will say we were playing hurt, had only 10 players with us, the others couldn't get off Saturday to play. By winning, we played game No. 4 at 4:30 p.m. against First Baptist of Denton and we won again by a score of 4 to 1. "Ole Cripple" Lionel Schulz was the winning pitcher allowing 3 hits, 2 walks and 3 strikeouts.

Hitters were Kerry Goad with a homerun and a single, Ben Downey with a sacrifice, Don Jarma, a double, Paul Bartos, 2 singles, Tommy Yates, a sacrifice, Lionel Schulz, a single and Ron Bliss, a walk and a single. This meant we were still in the tournament: 1 loss and 3 wins.

We had to play again at 6:30 against Ft. Worth Tel Turf team.

We were just wore out, tired, crippled but we still played and we lost by a score of 7 to 2. Losing pitcher was Lionel Schulz allowing 12 hits, 2 walks and 1 strikeout.

Hitters were Tommy Yates with a double and a single, Don Jarma, a single, Jerry Manak, a single and kerry Goad, a single.

We had a real good time, enjoyed a picnic lunch, a few drinks and went home with our chins up; just wish we could have entered one tournament

Mary Haisler District IV DYC —SPJSTDISTRICT VI YOUTH CAMP The District VI SPJST Camp will be held at Bastrop in the State Park from June 25th to June 28th. Please do not arrive before 2 p.m. on the 25th.

Things you will need are: swimsuit, beach towels, shoes, casual clothes for 3 days, good walking shoes for hiking, 2 bed sheets, pillow, a light blanket, flashlight, towel, wash cloth, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, T-shirt or white pillowcase for autographing.

You also will need the following costume for our night parties: a Halloween costume, a western attire (hoedown) and attire of your favorite actor or singer.

A cap or hat, insect repellent and sun tanning lotion would be helpful.

Be sure that your camp forms are notarized.

You will be busy with art and crafts. We will try to do a nature study this year instead of sports.

Come with a cheerful attitude and a big smile. Be willing to do your best in all activities. See you at camp!

ROBSTOWN LODGE 117 YOUTH CLUB ACTIVITIES HELD

Dear Members: I will write about the happenings of Robstown Youth Club. At times there aren't many activities because of school having other activities which the youth clubbers have to attend but we do the best we can.

In February a Valentine Party was held with everyone enjoying playing "Bingo" (no money

District VII Youth, at April 1st District Meeting, playing "You Know My Aunt Stacy Bielefeld of Lodge 107 sitting it the background. In the front seat is Jennifer Marek of Lodge 117, at Magic Isles, during their District VII April 1st outing.

exchanged) only small prizes; also meeting was held on the 18th, followed by a movie trip.

March 10 a regular meeting was held. Prior to the meeting a movie was presented by Miss Rita Blake who is a volunteer worker at the Department of Human Resources.

March 17 we took a movie trip to Cinema 6, in Corpus Christi.

March 15, with the help of Mrs. McDonald, Mrs. Ellzey, Katheryn Marek (assistant youth leader) I delivered 73 potted plants to Westwood Manor Nursing Home.

April 14 a regular meeting was held with a good attendance. Youth clubbers donated candy to fill the 134 Easter baskets; 22 youth clubbers and adults put the finishing

Park on Nueces River. The youngsters enjoyed exploring the trails and also the barbecued hot dogs with all the extras: April 21 a bake sale was held at Model Market. Part of the proceeds from this sale were given to Nueces County Child Welfare Board. The following have donated to this project: Jennifer and Donald Marek, Edwin McDonald, Todd and Brad Ellzey, Sue Baker, Angie Hrncir, Mrs. Marek and Betty Jurica. The money was presented to the Welfare Board, April 24th; also, at that time, a $500 check was presented to Mrs. Fancis, employed by the Texas Department of Human Resources by Mrs. Kathyrn Marek, treasurer of Lodge 117, Robstown, which was

touch on the baskets. For this project, H.E.B. and Albertsons donated the small baskets; ribbons and pipe cleaners were used in decorating them. At least 75 hours of work was involved in this project. Several mothers worked on the baskets before this date. The baskets were delivered on the 19th to Westwood Manor Nursing Home and Dos Mundos Day Center. The baskets were a big surprise, especially for the children at the day center. These children range from 2 to 5 and are from single parent homes. Their faces lighted up with smiles when they each received a basket full of goodies.

Another bake sale was held May 12 and proceeds from this sale will be used for the trip to Astro World, June 30th and July 1st.

A meeting was held May 19, followed by a movie trip to Cinema 6.

May 27 was a happy occasion; two of our hard-working and active youth clubbers, Todd Ellzey and Edwin McDonald were honored with dining out at "The Sizzler." The honorees and other guests enjoyed the evening. After dinner a beautifully decorated cake in the colors of maroon and gold, the school colors of Tuloso-Midway High School was enjoyed. Graduates, may you continue in all your endeavors and all of us who are involved with the youth club wish you much success in the future; you two clubbers will be missed at all of the activities and meetings.

All the youth clubbers are preparing for District VII YAD which will be held July 8 in Floresville and from there to State YAD, August 12th.

Conventiontime is nearing where the delegates will be making big decisions; I'm hoping to see all of you here in Corpus Christi, June 17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th.

In July, I will be taking off for Creyahoga Falls, Ohio to visit with our daughter, Dorothy, and her husband, Richard, and granddaughter, Catherine Kline; they moved to Ohio after Hurricane Celia. Mrs. Marek and her two children, Jennifer and Donald are going with me.

We sure do need rain; we had 1.9 about 2 weeks ago but we need much more. The crops are not the best because the rainfall was scarce; Lake Corpus Christi is half-full, this means that water will be rationed and it can be a critical situation.

DISTRICT III YOUTH CLUB MEETING REPORT Dear Readers, The District III Youth Club spring meeting was held at Cottonwood, April 29, 1984, at approximately 1:30 p.m. Prior to the meeting the Cottonwood Youth Club members presented entertainment for the district meeting.

Thirty-six children were present at the youth club meeting, and new officers were elected.

Door prizes were given and were appreciated by all winners. Darrell Uptmor won a paint by number set which he promised to complete and enter at District III YAD, July 1st.

Other prize winners included Kevin Dobecka, Craig Hromadka, Tracy Breitkreutz, Ryan Leshikar, Becky Mynar and Raymond Joe Hromadka.

A possible outing at Johnson's Appoloosa Ranch was discussed but no definite date was, set until additional information could be obtained.

I YOUTH ENJOY CAMP

DISTRICT

Dear Members: We went to Camp Lone Star near La Grange June 2-5, 1984. I had a great time!

We went horseback riding, hiking, canoeing and swimming. My group won second place in relays. I received a red ribbon. We did crafts too.

Some of the lodges arranged night activities. Our lodge had a Hawiian night and we wore flower costumes. We had a Mexican Fiesta and the last night we got to stay up for a fifties dance.

It was really a fun camp. I can't wait to go again next year.

30 YOUTH CLUB MET RECENTLY

LODGE

Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club held their monthly meeting on June 3, at 2:30, at the Taiton Community Center. Pres. Michelle Srubar brought the meeting to order. Keith Kresta led the pledge, and March Dorotik said the prayer.

During the meeting we discussed camp which will be from June 25-28.

All members going to camp should meet at Kahanek's at 11:00 a.m.

For the contest, everyone was asked to make a Father's Day card, in which is a picture of what your father likes to do best. The winners are as follows: (6-9) 1st — Craig Dorotik, 2nd — Craig Dornak, 3rd — Lenice Caspar; (10-12) 1st —Marcy Dorotik; (13-17) 1st —Janna Dornak, 2nd—was a tie between Jean Dorotik and Michelle Srubar.

3n filtnuititun EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge Novy Tabor 17, Caldwell, Texas, in behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother KVERIN URBANOVSKY, of Caldwell, Texas, who died Monday at 9:25 p.m., February 27, in St. Joseph's Hospital in Bryan, Texas. He was 66 years of age.

Mr. Urbanovsky was born June 3, 1917, in Burleson County in Snook to the late John and Julia (Jakubik) Urbanovsky. A resident of Burleson County all of his life, he was a farmer in the New Tabor Community and also had been employed by Bennie Polasek Sheet Metal Company for many years and for Kellar Chair Company for 15 years.

He was a member of the New Tabor Brethren Church, the SPJST Lodge 17 and the CSA Lodge of New Tabor. He was married to Agnes Srubar, July 23, 1940 in Bryan, Texas.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Agnes Urbanovsky of Caldwell;

HERBERT OTTO KIESCHNICK,

who died April 24, 1984 in Humble at the age of 66 years, 1 month and 14 days.

Born March 10, 1918 in Lee County, Texas, Brother Kieschnick was a longtime member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, and SPJST Lodge No. 142, Houston where he served as vice president.

Prayer service was held at 7:30 p.m. April 26th in Klein Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral services were held at 10 Friday, April 27 at the Klein Funeral Home Chapel in Tomball, Texas with Rev. Roy Kieschnick of the Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Interment was in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Alene Kieschnick, sons and daughters-inlaw, Robert and Mary Ann Kieschnick and Donald and Grace Kieschnick; grandchildren, Curtis, Keith and Byron Kieschnick; brothers, Martin Kieschnick and Howard Kieschnick; and one sister, Ella Schiwart.

- In lieu of usual remembrances donations may be given to the Good Samaritan Lutheran Home, 18937 KZ Road, Cypress, TX 77429.

May our departed lodge brother rest in eternal peace.

INI■Nimmummusim BARTA-VALENTA-HAVELVLASAK REUNION The annual reunion of the BartaValenta-Havel-Vlasak families will be held at the American Legion Park in Shiner, Texas June 17, 1984.

All relatives and friends are invited.

Each family is asked to bring enough food for their family. The cups, plates, and tea for the noon meal will be furnished by the committee. A short meeting will follow. This being the 27th annual reunion, please make an extra effort to be present.
