Danbury Lodge Donates $500 To City Park

President V. J. Hechler and Secretary Tommie Lostak recently presented a $500 check to the Danbury Skrabanek City Park on behalf of the Danbury SPJST Lodge No. 139.

The park is being renovated and new facilities are added.

SPJST Makes Contribution To UT

District III Given Recognition

SPJST District II Director Henry E. Vitek recently presented a $1,000 SPJST contribution to the University of Texas. The funds were presented to Franti gek W. Galan, assistant professor at the University of Texas at Austin who teaches in the department of Slavic languages. The contribution was made under the special program authorized by the XXIIIrd SPJST convention for institutions teaching the Czech languages.

Director Sid Pokladnik is holding an appreciation award from the Texas Department of Human Resources, for the many contributions given by several lodges within the district to the Child Abuse and Neglect (CNN) Program, at the members' District III meeting held April 29th at Lodge 6 in Cottonwood.

but because their life would not be worth living without those convictions. To acquire and hold convictions takes time. It is a soulsearching matter. The reward is faith in oneself - a reason for existence. It has been my experience that the persons who are most deeply motivated by convictions come eventually to the conclusion that there is a master plan for all of us, governed by an allpowerful being.

We are born to assume eventual responsibilities, but the person who is born with unusual, or even aboveaverage intelligence, has a responsibility for service greater than that of his brother who, through a combination of genes and chromosomes, is less brilliantly endowed.

Service and recognition of the need for service are mainsprings of American life. Service can be effective only if given willingly. Our system places this responsibility on the individual. Any individual can lose their dignity if the strong do not continue to take up the task of serving their fellowmen, and unless each bears their responsibility according to their capacity and capabilities.

Yet another horizon is the practice of tolerance and patience.

This editor remembers well from a non-fraternal convention that he has attended and heard the guest speaker quote one of Plato's philosophies: "You are young, my son, and as the years go by, time will change and even reverse many of your opinions. Refrain, therefore, a while from setting yourself up as a judge of the highest matters."

No doubt our forthcoming SPJST Convention is bound to make very essential decisions regarding the system of delegates, plus various other progressive steps to maintain a fraternal benefit society that must continue to be a charitable organization, and must operate without stockholders or shareholders, also must have a lodge system and a representative form of government. Naturally, our Society has all of this. We do not operate for the benefit of any individual, we only pay salaries for the work done; and premium refunds are being issued.

The local lodge home is the property of each local member and not of the few. The Home Office in Temple does not belong to the Supreme Lodge, but to all. SPJST members in good standing. We have a lodge system, which means that members meet regularly. If they would not meet regularly, it would have to be reported that certain lodges do not comply with the requirements.

Presumably quite often you have heard the need for service. We, the SPJST members have the responsibility of serving our fellowmen.

Numerous of us repeat it, some believe it, and some of us have acquired a deep conviction that we must serve others.

Remember, conviction and belief are not to be confused. We can believe in many things and can change our beliefs with the passing of time. Convictions are acquired slowly and, once acquired, are as much a part of a human behig as is an arm or a leg. The boldest definition of conviction is: Something we would rather die for than yield.

This editor believes that any individual, to be successful, must have one or two things that they believe in so strongly that they would die for them, not suicidally,

Give up or keep up! When a man speaks of "giving up his policy," make it quite plain to him that something much more than a policy is being "given up."

For example, he may be - giving up a home for a widowhis widow.

- giving up decent and adequate food, shelter and clothing for helpless children -his children.

- giving up the last two or three years in high school for a boy or girl- his boy or girl.

- giving up a mother's companionship with her children, and the lifelong benefit the children themselves receive from this companionship.

When a man realizes what it means to "give up" a policy, the chances are that, instead, he will keep it up! *5*

SUPREME LODGE

From the Office of the Vice-President

From the President's Office Convention Wrap-Up Dear Members/Delegates: Although the announcements will be made on Monday and Tuesday of the convention, I thought it might be appropriate to let you have the starting times of the evening convention activities.

The Howdy Party on Sunday will be from 6:30 to 8:30.

The Monday night function with the Majek Orchestra will be from 7:30 to 11:30.

SUM The semi-formal Tuesday night banquet will get under way at 7. In this regard, the committee is asking that you place your banquet tickets by your plates; they will be picked up by young ladies working with the Convention Planning Committee.

We are asking that everyone start assembling between 6:30 and 6:45 because the caterer has been instructed to start serving at 7 p.m. sharp.

This, is important: We are asking that everyone assemble in the area of the convention sessions which adjoins the area where the banquet will be held until it is announced that you may proceed to the W.S.hquet seating area. The reason for this is because the caterer and his staff will be putting the final touches on all arrangements and if approximately Sales representatives in attendance Tues. May 22, at Nolan's Steak House in 500 people (our estimate) are in the Corpus Christi. Lodges represented were Lodge 79, Lodge 93, Lodge 117, banquet area, they might hinder the Lodge 137, and Lodge 161. catering staff. This will also insure us being able to start the banquet meal promptly at 7. The short program and introductions should not take too long and the dance will get under way promptly at 8 p.m. It will last until 12 midnight.

See last week's Vestnik for the appropriate attire for each of these functions, plus other information regarding the convention.

The 30 Sales Representatives to be recognized and their spouses will be seated at designated tables, as will the Youth Scholarship Recipient and parents and the State King and Queen and their parents. The tables are round banquet tables and will seat 8 persons each Other than these, the seating will be "open".

So that the delegates can leave their families a phone number in case of necessity, that number is 512-888-6119. If there is a change in this number, it will be announced at the convention. The phone will be located in the Home Office Staff Work Room. This is for the convenience of the delegates and their families at home. No LD calls out or collect calls, please.

Sales representatives in attendance Wed. May 23, at Beef and Bourbon Steak House in San Antonio. Lodges represented were Lodge 107, Lodge 133, and Lodge 161.

SFM McBride held dinner/seminars at Corpus Christi and San Antonio along with District 7 Director Thelma Hrncir for the active sales representatives in District 7.

Of the 35 producing sales repre sentatives in District 7, 15 were in attendance at these seminars. We appreciate the efforts of these sales representatives and urge those that are not active to come join us aboard the SPJST train. We are moving on

to bigger and better things —"Don't be left behind".

It is the lodge and members duty to support the sales representatives of your lodge and to help them secure new members in order to keep your lodge alive and growing.

Please urge the sales representatives of your lodge to attend the insurance, seminars so they can better serve your membership.

District VI Sets Meeting Date The District VI fall meeting will be held Sunday, October 14, 1984 in the Taiton Community Center at Taiton, Texas with Lodge 30 of Taiton as host.

4, Hallettsville Meeting Lodge

Dear Members: Our lodge held its regular monthly meeting Sunday, May 13, 1984 in the Grant Building.

President Frank Zabransky called the meeting to order, followed by the pledge to the U.S. flag led by Chris and Gary Chudej.

Gay Galetka read a resolution of sympathy for our departed member, Sister Frances Cervenka.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes of the last meeting which were approved, followed by correspondence.

Co-Youth Leader Evelyn Holy reported on the activities of the Youth Club. Reports were also given

by Treasurer Helen Zabransky and Financial Secretary Hilmer Galetka.

It was decided that, at the next meeting, we should start planning and discussing our annual Family Day to be held as usual in August.

Following other business, refund checks were given out and the meeting adjourned. Refreshments and lunch were served.

A Mother's Day door prize given by the youth club was won by Evelyn Holy. The adult door prize went to Linda Mikush and the youth door prize to Gary Chudej.

The Birthday Cake for April, May and June was won by Helen Zabransky.

Our next meeting will be held Sunday, June 10 at the Grant Bldg. beginning at 2 p.m., followed by refreshments and lunch as usual.

4/VESTNIK—Wednesday, June 6, 1984

June 10th Meeting At Lodge 29, Taylor The monthly lodge meeting of Lodge 29 was held Sunday, May 20 at 4 p.m. with President Edwin Adamek presiding.

Andy Wuensche, representing the youth club, presented the flag and led the members in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing for a few moments of silence for our deceased members, Brother John Pokorny and Sister Dorothy Kardine.

Roll call of officers showed all present, except Melvin and Geraldine Steger, Elaine Machu and Leroy Marx.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.

The Property Committee report was given, also the treasurer's report. Edith Shiller gave the Audit report for January, February and March.

New members accepted in our lodge included Steven Joseph Rieger, Shane Elizabeth Kovar, Timothy George Vanecek, Kelly Wayne Kovar, Brian Wayne Rieger, Wendy LeAnn Kovar and Michael Hodge.

A thank you letter was read from the Farm Bureau for letting them use our hall for the Farm Bureau Queen's contest and also from the University of Texas Czech Club for the use of the hall for their conference and dance.

Door prizes were won by Ronnie Rieger, Edith Shiller and Lillie Krueger.

Our next lodge meeting will be at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 10th.

11th Meeting For Lodge 84, Dallas

Dear Members: Our meeting last Monday needed more members. Where were you? A reminder to attend the next one June 11th at 7:30 p.m.

The report given by Brother Ben Jarma for the Sunshine Committee included get-well cards to Brothers John Slovak, Jerome Zabojnik, Sr., James Grier, Leo Troracek and Sisters Stacy Athas, Annie Steglik, Lisa Sadecky and Christine Sykora.

Get-well wishes also go to Brother Bob Wright, a former officer of our Lodge 84, who moved many years ago to the West Community.

New baby cards went to Brother Jerry and Lisa Zabojnik, parents; and grandparents, Brother Jerome and Rosemary Zabojnik.

Congratulations to all of you!

Our sympathy is extended to the William Pecena family who lost their father. May he rest in peace.

Vice President Ida Schultz gave a good entertainment report and on a newsletter, which is being sent. She also talked about our Czechfest for September 16th. Are you, as a member, giving any thought to this day? If sewing is not your best, then use a hammer and nails to build or how about some canned goods: pickles, jams, peaches, etc? Last year, Brother Oldrich Horak grew some tobacco plants. .I mean tall

ones in containers and these items sold first in the greenhouse booth; what the Entertainment Committee really wants to ask you to do is: start early, perhaps week after next and work on these items which you wish to give to the various booths being planned; time is so short.

I do wish to clear all thoughts on this tobacco plant; it really was just that, not collard greens going to seed nor mustard greens or a sick magnolia tree, but a honest-to-goodness plant from seed from South Carolina. Brother Bill Beseda and Brother Bill Giaser bought the two biggest ones, so ask them how mild the leaves were.

Youth Leader Bessie Petr reported the youth were having their meetings and asked to be excused for a moment but did say that Beseda practice for YAD competition was in full swing, and also many good reports about the Juniors' dance at the Polka Festival in Ennis.

House Committee Chairman Adolph Salac thanked the following for work during cleanup night on the dance floor and kitchen; namely, Brothers Emil, Charlie and Edwin Petr, Paul Pokladnik, Oldrich Horak, Randolph Scott, Joe Ondrusek, Ron Coker, Ben Jarma, Weldon Hackworth and Sisters Annie, Wanda and Cheri Petr, Lillie Jarma, Rose Scott and Evelyn Salac. He also reported there were many compliments about our wonderful dance floor; it's second to none; you should try it soon by attending our scheduled dances: June 2 were the Mikula's from Ennis, and June 16 — The Czechmates.

For Social Committee, Evelyn Salac reported on money donated through work in the kitchen.

The Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council will have the annual dinner and short meeting and games June 14 at the Czech Club on Military Parkway at 7 p.m. The council furnishes the fried chicken, drink and bread, and each lodge is designated to bring items; Lodge 84 has desserts and, so, if you come, please bring something for that table. The generous council donated money to the Dallas "Meals on Wheels," Ennis "Meals on Wheels," and the Brady Center in Dallas in memory of Father Brady who died last week.

The Czech Culture Society met and a report was given by Sister Petr. The Society donated $1,000 to a worthy cause. I'm not sure of the next meeting date (my apologies).

Brother Ben Jarma said only four more league play games are left, so hurry if you plan to attend. SPJST has won all games in their league.

Aren't you just so proud of all this good playing despite sore muscles, charlie horses, scraped knees, etc.

No new candidates for this month but additional insurance by Brother Alex Parma was purchased.

President Ondrusek brought up the Fourth of July get-to-gether of all lodges and more will be said at our next meeting June 11th.

Mr. and Mrs. H. Jarisch left on a vacation with their daughter and son-in-law. They went to Canton, Texas to look at the Flea Market there. From there they went to Wichita Falls, then on to Caprock Canyon and to Palo Duro Canyon.

Mr. Jarisch said it was so pretty and they were having a nice trip until they got to Colorado and he couldn't breathe; he said it's very rough not being able to breathe, so he and Mrs. Jarisch came home. They were at the Workers' Party yesterday afternoon. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves on the dance floor.

It was nice that the sun came out for us, but the rain was a big welcome because it was so dry. Boy, the grass has turned green, again, and growing!

pletely. Why? Ask some of the older members who remember what happened in the early Forties when the directors took over. According to what I was told, the directors would meet and decide on matters without the officers being present!

It was a disaster and had to be straightened out by the Insurance Commissioner in Austin. Some say we are big business and should be run like big business, and I say that we do big business but basically we are a fraternal family organization.

Contrary to what I heard someone say, this change was not considered by the Bylaw Committee for the 1980 Convention nor was it considered by any other committee.

Delegates, I know you are loyal members who consider carefully all changes; I just had to write about them because I really am worried.

Why such changes when we have grown so much, especially since 1968 when President Nick Morris took office. We have a most capable Supreme Lodge made up of dedicated officers who all should be reelected! Yes, we have made changes before, but let's not change what is working so well and with great progress!

I also want to mention our wonderful SPJST Scholarship Program which means so much to our young members. Vice President Bernie Gebala and Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas brought back the scholarship idea from the Croatian Fraternal Life in Pittsburg. Bernie worked hard on it, and the result is a fine scholarship program! I am sure the young people join me in saying, "Thank you very much, Bernie and Jerry!"

Dear Delegates: It is because I dearly love our SPJST that I feel compelled to write this letter about the proposed bylaw changes. My parents were members (mother receiving a 50-year pin), and my grandson is the fourth generation in SPJST. He will be a paid-up member at age 10, and when he graduates from high school, he will have an SPJST Endowment policy and an SPJST Annuity. So you can see why I am very interested in our Society continuing to grow!

There are several changes proposed by the Bylaw Committee that we need to consider carefully. I think these changes would have bad effects on our presidency and our youth department.

In Article 33, number 18, the committee proposes a youth director who would report directly to the Supreme Lodge. Only officers do that, so are they trying to make the youth director an officer? We have the finest youth program in the state, so why the change?

In Article 33, number 18 — (b) 9, they propose that the secretary treasurer procure bonds instead of the president, and in Article 34 — C they recommend that the financialsecretary replace the president in transferring the money with the secretary-treasurer. Why take these powers from the president?

Their proposal for Article 37 (a) would really bring down the position of the president. They want "head of all departments" be struck out!

Why? The president is responsible for the activities of all departments; if anything goes wrong, he is the one blamed. Each head of department runs his department, and when a problem arises, he can consult with the president. No. 92, Fort Worth Dear Members and Friends: Due to the illness of our President Mary Powers, our meeting was called to order by Hermina Cihacek, vice-president, who welcomed back all of our regular members who have been absent for a short time due to illness or vacations.

Frances Grizzard read the minutes from the last meeting, also "Thank You" notes from Mary Powers and Sadi Gorsuch.

Lillie McMillen reported that Bill Renfro would be operated on next week at St. Joseph's Hospital. We hope he will soon be recovered.

Lillie also gave a short talk on their visit to Hawaii and how blue the water was at all times. We all enjoyed it. Millie Wruble gave an interesting talk on the weather in Europe and told us about her sister who had passed away. Anna Polk told us about Pennsylvania and told us to be sure and come to see her if we were visiting in that state. We were happy to see her again and hope she can come and visit with us soon.

Maggie Konecny surprised all of us by donating three prizes. The one for the oldest mother was won by Bennie Hundle, the one for the youngest mother was won by Joyce Tesar and the regular door prize was won by Flora Koci. Maggie, we really appreciate your thoughtfulness.

Mary Cihacek will donate the prize for June.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Hermina and Phyllis Cihacek, Esta Belle Hubenak, Corina Tesar, Evelyn Williams, Rosie Zalesak and to Lydia Palachek.

We learned that Betty Billingston was in the Huguley Hospital in Grandview and that Julie Dueser was just taken to All Saints Hospital yesterday. While talking to her on the telephone she told me that they had just buried her brother-in-law, Luther Shaw, who had a heart attack while working with the election. We wish to extend our sympathy to the Shaw family.

Another one of our members, Helton Whitaker, has also been in the hospital. We hope everyone will soon be well and able to go home.

A lovely and extravagant reception and dance was enjoyed by all the guess. The bride and groom will live in Fort Worth.

Another lovely wedding took place at College Station over the weekend. Congratulations go to Kathryn Elizabeth Kulzer and Randy Mark Palachek. Parents of the bride are Mrs. and Mrs. Leland Kulzer of Long Beach, California, and parents of the bridegroom are Mr. and Mrs. Charles V. Palachek of Smithfield, Texas. Grandmother of the bridegroom is Mary Palachek.

The wedding took place at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in College Station, Texas. Officiating were Rev. William Oxley of St. Thomas and Rev. Joe Palachek of Centre Pr6sbyterian Church in Longview, uncle of the bridegroom.

The reception and dance was held in College Station Community Center following the ceremony.

Assisting in the reception were Mrs. Roy Williams, Mrs. James Greer, and Gina and Misti Watson.

The bride and bridegroom are both Wildlife and Fisheries biologists. She is employed by the Dept. of Texas Park Wildlife in Kerrville, Texas and both are graduates of Texas A&M University and working for their Masters Degree.

After a honeymoon in California the couple will reside in Kerrville, Texas.

Congratulations go to Emily Ann Palachek who graduated from Westwood High School in Austin, Texas, Thursday, May 24, 1984. She has also been presented with a scholarship to the University of Texas in Austin, Texas. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Palachek.

After leaving the wedding of her grandson, Randy, Mary Palachek went home with Tommy and family to Austin, Texas to attend the graduation of Emily, her granddaughter.

Congratulations also go to Kala Ann Proctor who graduated from Richardson High School May 30th, 1984. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Proctor of Dallas and the niece of Mary Powers and Tillie Gillis.

Mary Powers said to tell everyone that she misses all of us and that she really did appreciate all the cards and telephone calls from all of you.

She hopes she will be well enough to be back for the July meeting.

Greetings From Lodge 191, East Texas May 26th: A big dance and a big success. We had a real good turnout for this dance and really had a good time. Don Sessum and Jimmy Bryan seems to me were extra good. They all donated their earnings for that night to the family of Tony Niosi, a good friend of theirs and a band drummer who had died that morning— Saturday, May 26th. I thought it was real nice of them. Many of the dance participants also donated.

We had our Lodge 191 meeting May 14th and old and new projects were discussed and seems like we are doing real good. I would again ask for more Lodge 191 members to participate in our monthly meetings to help out with lodge projects and decisions.

The monthly garage sales are helping a little, so, in order to meet our objectives, we, again, ask those of you who have items you would like to get out of your way, bring them to the lodge or call either Jerry Sizemore at 632-2804 or John Anderson at 639-4130. Someone will be glad to pick up items.

John Anderson, our lodge president, has also been elected SPJST sales representative, so any information needed about our lodge throughout the state, contact John Anderson or Jerry Sizemore.

We had other real good dances with taped music and everyone has enjoyed them. Our first Western dance class was a big success. Lots of happy, people as you can see by the picture. Pre-Convention Comments Dear Bro. Editor and Members: There has been considerable discussion concerning the Bylaw Committee's recommendations concerning the Supreme Lodge (SL) and the President's office/duties.

Since I do not know enough about the inner workings of the SL, it is not my intention to approve or disapprove of those recommendations; but I would like to express some thought concerning them.

Even though no explanations were given, there must be some subsurface problems concerning the incumbent President being (1) head of all departments, (2) head of the SL and presiding officer at all SL meetings, and (3) head of the Youth Department and youth activities.

Need For Changes From the recommended changes, there must be some problems within the SL and the leadership of the president, contrary to statements made in some of the recent testimonial letters. Surely the Bylaw Committee would not have adopted such changes, unless they had information which indicated a need for those changes. Surely if there is so much smoke there must be some fire.

I do not know what the contributing problems are; but if I were a delegate, I think I would need to know, if I were to vote intelligently on these issues. Toward that end, I would suggest that delegates ask questions of those who should know the answers.

Supreme Lodge I see nothing basically wrong with the proposed reorganization which calls for a SL consisting of only the seven district directors. The arrangement resembles the structure of many large corporations and to some extent the structure of local public school or junior college boards of trustees. These boards are charged mainly with the setting of policies, and the administrative officers are charged with carrying out those policies.

I see no problem with the selection of one of the seven district directors as Chairman of the SL Board and his presiding at SL Board meetings.

If the functioning of the SL Board continued on a parallel with the school boards, the agenda might still be prepared by the President but the SL Board would need its own Secretary for minute-taking.

The SL Board could go into Executive session, if there were delicate/confidential matters which they needed to discuss.

In this proposed SL Board arrangement the directors must be capable and must be highly interested and knowledgeable in all matters relating to the SPJST. They surely will have what amounts to a much greater and more exclusive role in SPJST policy determination.

Administrative Officers The principal officers of the organization still • could attend meetings and offer their expertise (as the public school superintendent and principals or college president and deans attend board meetings); but they would not be in the possible "conflict of interest" situation of voting on their own proposals or

other personally related matters.

I suppose that the principal officers might act as an Executive Committee, in case of need between board meetings.

Department Heads I feel that sometimes the annual and other reports are somewhat misleading, as to who does what in the home office. I think each departmental head should stand on his or her own performance, being given the credit and/or blame. I think most would prefer it that way and would come out with much more credit than blame.

Youth Department I think the SPJST is a sufficiently large organization, its commitment to an effective youth program is admittedly great, and the need for improvement is readily apparent; therefore, the SPJST should have a Sate Youth Director who would report directly to the SL Board.

This State Youth Director should have some training, expertise, and experience in youth leadership, training programs (including Czech heritage work), and activities.

He should understand today's youth and should be able to work well with the district and local lodge youth directors, as well as with his fellow officers and the SL Board.

Possible Reason For Changes There is always the possibility of an unstated reason or purpose for making -bylaw changes. Could it be that the SL, and the office of President, are being designed for or around the existing president? In other words, are we trying "to make the office fit the person" instead of "picking a person to fit the office"?

If this were the only reason for the change, I would not approve of it. Anyone is replaceable and we should select persons who can fill the office and job description rather than making basic changes in our organization to accommodate them.

Conclusion If time permits, I will try to discuss at least one more topic in the last issue of the Vestnik before the convention.

Recent Family Activities

Saturday morning, March 31 at 5:30, I cooked my breakfast, then, at 8 a.m., my dear daughter, Ann, and son-in-law Roy Peal, came in their new auto to take ne to Kenedy, Texas to meet my other dear daughter, Lillie Huber and her husband, John to take me to their home at Austin. (I kept my home empty for some time, but kept the city utilities and telephone services.

My dear children live nearby my home and they will take care of it.

They are Olga and Emil Mokry and Ann and Roy Peal.)

At 2 p.m., I was in Huber's home for the next month in a new home.

My dear granddaughter, Paula Huber Richardson, with her lovely son, Harrison, came to say welcome to Austin, Texas the same day. Next day Nancy Huber (my other granddaughter) also came to say welcome to Austin, Texas. (Their son Harrison was born October 5, 1983 and he is my 11th great-grandson.)

The month of April is hunting season month for turkeys. We went 3 times and had no luck! Paula's husband, Randy Nichols, got one on the last hunting day, which was Sunday April 30th.

April 24th, in the morning, my daughter Lillie Huber and yours truly went to Taylor for a visit with the occupants in the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home. In no time, we met Mr. John Adamek who introduced himself to us and gave some information about the services he and others are getting. He had great praise for this institution.

At 9:30 a.m., we were invited to the office occupied by Adminsitrator Mrs. Frances Schwenker; the next room was occupied by her assistant.

Mrs. Schwenker said that she had seen me somewhere before. My reply was: "Maybe in the Vestnik."

We filled an application for entry occupancy in case I may need it.

At my February doctor's visit he said that I need not get ready for a nursing home yet. We made a personal visit in a single room to.

Mrs. Wilma Marek, widow of the late SPJST Supreme Lodge President Edward L. Marek in Temple, Texas. (Mrs. Marek and my late wife, Albina (Poboril) Stasa attended the Red Ranger School located in Bell County, Texas for some time together.) Since the Makre's three children are living out of state, she found her next home in Taylor, Texas. At this time, she is in better health. It was a pleasure to talk to her.

After we stepped out of her room, we met Mrs. Annie Troubil who is employed there since 1957. Her late husband, Rudolph Troubil, was appointed administrator of the rest home after Stephen Valcik from Houston was the temporary administrator, Mr. Troubil died in 1960 when attending the SPJST Convention in Dallas of a heart attack. The Troubil family moved from West, Texas to Corpus Christi in 1940. They joined the SPJST Lodge No. 56, Sokol, also SVPS (fire/ storm mutual insurance organization). This family was active in all these named organizations for several years. Rudolph was hall manager and Annie was kitchen manager. Rudolph also helped organize a talent club to play Czech stage numbers.

At the present time, the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home is filled to capacity (74 rooms) and a long waiting list. In Taylor, there are two more nursing homes. Good living and better health is wished to all occupants.

Going to Taylor and coming back home, we noticed that many new apartments were being built and much construction is going on. The land around the cities is selling for $2,000 an acre. In Austin and by the highways, the land is sold by square feet. I understand that northern state and foreign capitalists are investing their money in Texas.

There are less cattle in pastures than in other years because of dry weather, little hope for rain and a small supply of feed; it raised the price of a bale of hay to $3 — what unheard of price! The creeks are dry, the rivers are running low, and the field crops are late and in poor condition.

Monday, April 30th, my dear son, Johnny, and wife, Elsie Stasa, came to Hubers to take -me to- their

home.Hubers are located in northwestern Austin in the city limits and Stasas are south of the city limits about 17 miles and 7 miles from Manor in a subdivision. The forest ranch was subdivided into lots; a creek runs through the ranch.

There is a park and lake on six acres; my two grandsons, Larry and Dennis, are living there with their families. The same day they came and made a welcome visit, also some neighbors came. The surrounding land and people are nice and friendly.

Saturday, May 5th, we were invited by neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. Moffet to their barbecue supper; there were 12 adults and 5 children.

The two men played guitars and one lady played on the piano, with some singers entertaining. This was outside under the shady oak trees. I got home to sleep at 1:15 a.m. after having a wonderful get-together party.

Sunday, May 13th, we attended a celebration of Dennis's and his dear wife, Donna Stasa's new home; there were 22 persons and I got home at 9:25 p.m.

May 16th, my stepgrandson Danny Loving and his dear wife, Diana came from Oklahoma to visit his parents, Elsie and Johnny Stasa.

Diana's parents are Ed. M. and Flossie Neal of Beeville, Texas.

I enjoyed the country living, the fresh air, trees, animals, birds, and the people very much.

An Invitation To The Scasta Reunion The Scasta reunion will be held Sunday, June 10, 1984 at the Wheelock Community Center in Wheelock, Texas. Relatives and friends are invited to attend this reunion and kindly bring enough food for your family and guests to be served at noon.

This will be our 70th anniversary of the family gathering; the first reunion was held in Bryan at the American Legion Hall Therefore, make plans to attend. I know transportation is much easier and faster than in the olden days.

Our oldest sister, Christine, passed away August 26th at the age of 95 years. We miss her and we hope she is resting easy. We will also miss her at the reunion. There are six more living in the family of 12 and some day we will follow her in our retired age.

The Scasta Family: Let us be proud of our pioneers who laid a foundation and made a tremendous progress in everyone's occupation; how proud our father would be if he were alive because he believed in progress and now we live in luxury and push buttons. Will this comfort last forever? Will air, oil and water last forever? Probably the unborn generations will invent new methods to get all of these things from some other place.

While I was visiting my son in New Mexico, a kind lady brought me a Reader's Digest and in large print in it was that the sun will quit shining in 1980 that cycles and gives light which will quit shining and the world will quit rotating; in darkness nothing will grow_

We plan to utilize these funds during the next year to continue our support of Czech instructional activities in the Alvin community.

At this point we are planning our fall schedule and will follow through with plans for a field trip to the museum in Temple as one of our class activities.

I have also talked with Mrs. Lynn Hall, Senior Citizens Coordinator, and she is most interested in finding out if we can schedule a program activity for our senior citizens group that will highlight Czech culture, traditions, and contributions to Texas (present and past). We will contact Mr. Hanus regarding this later in the summer or early fall.

News Release The Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas, is an organization pledged to maintain the background of the Czech culture, language, and traditions; and they accomplish this through various activities. For several years Alvin Community College has been awarded annual contributions from SPJST for the continutation of Czech activities and the instruction of the Czech language. These funds are used by ACC to support educational activities, to provide educational opportunities, and to promote Czech culture and tradition in this area.

One of the newly planned activities to be implemented into the

noncredit Czech language curriculum this fall is a trip to Temple, Texas. Located there is a museum housing the archives and historical artifacts of Czech people in Texas dating back to the 1800's.

SPJST donation to ACC will assist in funding this trip for Czech language study students.

Alvin Community College has Conversational Czech language courses each fall and spring, scheduled in the evenings to accommodate working people. The current director of Conversational Czech at ACC is John Karas. He has been with the program for two semesters. Prior to that time, William Souchek, the initiator of Czech language studies at Alvin Community College taught the courses. Both of these men have brought personality traits and educational qualities to the program that enhance and encourage the enthusiasm of the students.

Alvin Community College boasts of its Czech Club activities. This group, made up of students present and past, enjoys the social flavor of its out-of-class activities when members get together fora picnic or join in baking homemade kolache to sell at Alvin Frontier Days or the ACC Halloween Carnival. The funds from these money-raising activities are awarded to deserving students of Czech lineage by the club in the form of scholarships.

Alvin Community College, through its Continuing Education Department, has been successful in creating interest among the people of the Gulf Coast area in the study of Czech language, culture, and traditions. The response of the local community, the efforts of the instructors, the interest of the Czech Club mmbers, and the valuable assistance of state organizations like SPJST have made this possible.

News Release The Czech Club of Alvin Community College annually presents two deserving students of Czech lineage with scholarships for college study. The organization works hard during the year to raise money to fund these scholarships. The activities of the club include making homemade goodies, including kolaches, and selling them at festivities such as Alvin Frontier Days, ACC Halloween Carnival, etc.

These efforts indicate the high regard this group has for educating young people and assisting in the preparation for their futures.

May 4th was Awards Day at Alvin Community College. During these ceremonies Czech Instructor John Karas presented Jeff Orsak and Bryan Peltier with $250 scholarships to ACC. Each of the young men will attend ACC in the fall of 1984, one as a freshman and the other a sophomore.

The son of Charles and Annie Orsak of Alvin, Jeff will be a drafting major at ACC. During his high school career, he lettered four years on the diving team and has been active in the youth ministry at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church where he is a member of the Youth

Bryan Peltier, son of Richard 8z Irene Peltier, will begin his second year at ACC the 1984 fall semester.

His high school activities included football, student council delegate, state livestock judging team, being a

winner at the Houston Livestock Show, and 4-H. Peltier was active in 4-H for ten years. He is a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Alvin. When Bryan was 12 years old, he attended a Conversational Czech class at ACC instructed by Mr. William Souchek.

The leaders of District I met before the spring meeting April 29 at Lodge 39, Bryan for their training class. The lodges were well represented.

The following dates were reviewed: June 5—Depart Camp 10 a.m.

July 1 — YAD Cards Due to DYC July 22 — YAD at Lodge 186, Caldwell (More details later) August 12 — State YAD/Royalty at Temple Please mark these dates on your calendar and plan to attend.

The 1984 Youth Club year is almost at an end and I am very pleased with the progress each youth club has made. This is evident in the number of camp applications I have received (almost 100).

Here is a list of things you need to bring to camp: 1) Bedding: sheet, pillow/pillow case, light cover (Sleeping bags are ideal) 2)3 or 4 changes of clothes 3) Jeans and socks for horseback riding 4) Swimsuit and beach towel 5) Towel, wash cloth, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.

6)Flashlight (if you have one) 7) Comfortable shoes (tennis shoes) 8) Costume for party Note: I don't think fans will be necessary because we are camping earlier and there are large fans in each cabin.

I hope camp will be a great success. Campers, it is up to you to make this the best camp ever. See you there!

Seniors were honored with a hamburger supper. The honorees were Lori Henderson, Jackie Marek, Melissa Brandt and Kim Vanek.

Lori, a charter member of the youth club since 1977, received special recognition.

NEWS FROM TAITON LODGE 30 YOUTH CLUB Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club held their monthly meeting at 2:30 p.m. May 6 in the Taiton Community Center.

President Vicki Dorotik called the meeting to order. Marcy Dorotik led the pledge, and Amy Kresta recited a prayer.

For our contest, everyone was asked to make a Mother's Day card.

Winners in ages 6-9 were: 1st — Craig Dorotik, 2nd —Lenice Kaspar. in age 10-12: 1st—Landis Dornak, 2nd —Marcy Dorotik. In 13-17: 1st — Janna Dornak, 2nd — Michelle Srubar, 3rd —Jean Dorotik.

For Mother's Day, we honored each of our mothers with, a special door prize.

On behalf of our entire membership of Pokrok Jihu Lodge No. 72, we wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge sister HERMINA SALAC, who passed away April 24, 1984 on her 84th birthday at the Manor Oaks Nursing Home in Rockdale, Texas.

Sister Salac was born 24 April 1900 to Bernard Valka and Rosalie (Haskova) Valka. She was a lifelong resident of Milam County.

Sister Salac was a member of Lodge 72 Pokrok Jihu since October 12, 1930, and St. Monica Catholic Church, and KJZT in Cameron.

Services were held April 27 at St. Monica Catholic Church with Rev. Tom Chamberlain officiating. Burial was in St. Monica Cemetery.

Rosary was recited Thursday, April 26 at Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home Chapel, in Cameron, Texas.

Survivors include four daughters, Rosalie Salac of San Antonio, Caroline Farek of Corpus Christi, Helen Morris of Waco and Mildred Rabion of Pansey, Alabama; two brothers, Frank Valka of Cameron and John Valka of El Campo; five grandchildren and one greatgrandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband 21 September 1982 and a son.

May our departed lodge sister rest in eternal peace.

Sister Ondreka was the daughter of the late John A. Zak and Eva (Urbanek) Zak, born December 30, 1895. She was a homemaker.

Her husband preceded her in death.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Evelyn Moreau and three grandchildren of Dayton, Texas; also one sister, Mrs. Charles Olsak of Ballinger, Texas.

Burial was in Magnolia Park Cemetery, May 6th in Dayton.

NETEK'S FIRST FAMILY REUNION The family of Leo Netek from Corpus Christi, Texas will have their first reunion July 7, 1984 at the Community Hall in Robstown, Texas.

The celebration will begin with Holy Mass, offered for the loved ones who have departed and also for the living members.

In the afternoon activities will consist of getting to know each other; as in all large families, there are many relatives who have not

met each other; expected are some from Midland, Lubbock, Houston, San Angelo, San Antonio, etc. Everone is asked to bring pictures of their families or any pictures they may have that are related to the Netek family. (In the enclosed picture is the Leo Netek family that was taken in December 1946 at the family home.)

Leo Netek's first wife, Mary Kranavek Netek (mother of his 10 children), died at the age of 39 after giving birth to Christine 20 December 1926. Mr. Netek was left with 10 children, the oldest being 29 years old.

In 1929 he remarried and married Anna Svatek Netek from Shiner, Texas. They had, two children, Frances and Emil.

Leo Netek came to America in 1903 and settled in the Corn Hill area, worked at the country store and also farmed there.

In 1906 he married and, in 1914, he moved his family to Corpus Christi, where he farmed throughout his life.

He was 19 years old when he left his hometown, Svebohov, Czechoslovakia (in northern Moravia). He returned to Czechoslovakia for a visit when he was 84 years old. His relatives from Czechoslovakia correspond with the families in America. ***

Sokol Educator JOSEF MANES Josef was born in Prague, Old Town in 1820. He painted portraits, landscapes, flowers and colored sketches of' peasants. All his work had poetic, symbolic qualities. He viewed life from a highly intellectual, artistic background and also from close association with aristocrats. However, he was aware that his Czech people, ruled by the Hapsburgs, were strongly influenced by the rich, the nobility. He knew that it was the peasants who kept the Czech language alive. It was for this reason that he devoted his life not only to portray the aristocrats, but to leave a lasting record of the "sedlaci" (peasants), with their beautiful costumes, their kindness and their gentility.

Josef Manes became a national hero, a celebrated artist so well loved that many books were written about him. He was taught the first of artwork by his father, Antonin. He was also encouraged to follow an art career by his mother Magdalena. They were a family of artists, including Uncle Viclav, a professor in the Art Academy, who lived with them.

In 1833, Josef left school to be trained by his father and uncle. His father painted landscapes which came up to the high standards of landscape painting as done

by Theodore Rousseau. In 1835, Josef entered the Art Academy where he spent five years. Before finishing his schooling he was exhibiting and receiving awards, the first a silver medal. This was followed by a gold medal he got for a painting of King David, playing a harp. He was honored with many awards. His long friendship began with Count Tarouco, who became a student of his father.

Quido, the brother of Josef Manes, was also artistically inclined. He was interested in the costumes, as worn by the people from different provinces. They had intentions of opening up a gallery showing colored sketches of the natives in their costumes. Josef made a portrait of his brother Quido as a youth. His sister Amalie opened up a private school for girls.

Manes illustrated Czech folk songs with thoughts of publishing an album of them. He promoted Czech music, art and literature, also knew French, English, German, Slovak, Russian and Polish literature. He loved music, favoring that of Bedfich Smetana and Mozart. The 19th century in which Manes lived belongs to Romanticism, but its roots go back to the 18th century. Manes worked in oil, watercolor, pencil, pen and ink and knew the art of making lithographs and xylography.

He painted portraits of counts, countesses, their children, people from all walks of life, heads of women and men, gypsies, nude women and babies, young people, mountain scenes, townscapes, forests, wide tree trunks to emphasize their long survival and flowers. He designed insignias for fraternal lodges and singing societies, made banners for different organizations, also replicas of the Bohemian coat-of-arms, the lion with a crown on its head. Taken from the astronomical clock on the Old Town Hall, the calendar dial is a copy of the original one done by Josef Manes. The twelve medallions are made up of twelve scenes of country people which show pictures of the cherubs, one attached loosely by reins to a Pegasus, another cherub to a lion and there are other animals not as unreal as a winged horse.

Manes made engravings in wood which brought out the beauty of the Slovanske costumes, Hanicke costumes and those from Trentina, and men there know as "dratenici" (wire workers). They repaired pots, pans and could do anything with wire from wiring together an animal cage to making a stand for a flatiron to set on. Manes embraced a variety of subjects. He made pictures of cherubs portraying spring, summer, fall, winter and people in different cycles of activity going to church, attending a funeral, fishing or driving out in a buggy.

Traveling overseas or to faraway places did not appeal to Manes. He walked around the country and traveled extensively through Moravia and Slovensko studying and painting. He was satisfied to stay in his own Slav world. He went to Poland and Silesia, there also to study costumes and a trip to attend an art festival in Russia. He was one of the patriots who after the 1848 revolution brought pressure on Emperor Francis Joseph to grant a group of Czech artists the same equal rights that the German artists received.

Josef Manes worked with Jindfich Fuegner and Miroslav Tyr§ in designing the Sokol uniform. The original red shirt was chosen as the symbol of love for one's country. It was the color of the uniforms worn by Guiseppe Garibaldi, who with his soldiers fought for freedom and to unify Italy. Sokols had that same great desire to unify their country and free it from Hapsburg monarchy. The red in the Sokol shirts still survives with the rosette and feather stuck in the hat. In the Miroslav Tyr§ Museum hang paintings by Manes of the Fuegner and Tyr§ families.

The technique of coping with light and atmosphere to the best advantage was mastered by Manes. He had a magical way of using colors and fitting them together like a rhythmically compased poem. He found his

national artistic sense and the pathos of his nation in the Slovenske people.

One of his paintings that show his great harmony with nature and brought him recognition from the country people was "Libinky Na Hane" (Lovers on Hane), Slovak province. The lovers embraced in each others' arms are seated in a buggy, driving along a country lane. Mines said that the best years of his life were years of 1847 through 1867. It is known that Manes had a close association with Countess Isabella Tarouco:She kept a diary in which she wrote daily, leaving behind a record of his art life.

For years, Josef Manes' humorous drawings and sketches of natives appeared in a Prague magazine. He had a "IconiZek" (hobby) which was collecting clocks.

It had probably begun with his great interest in the astronomical clock on the Town Hall tower.

Josef Manes exhibited in Rome, Moscow, Berlin, Bucharest, Serbia, Dresden, Budapest, the Royal Scottish Acadeny in Edinburgh and in many other countries. He became ill in Rome and his sister Amalie brought him to Prague. He recovered and was able to attend another art exhibit and that was the end. He died December 9th, 1871 and was buried at 01§anske Cemetery.

ITEM OF INTEREST People in all parts of the world continually strive to better their lives by learning and doing. In Czechoslovakia, as in many other countries, the making of "povidla" had become because of economics, a necessary task and tradition.

To supplement food availability fruit trees were planted around the home, in the yard (humna), along the roads bordering properties, along lanes leading into and through fields. The plum (trnka, §vestka, or sliva) was/is very popular throughout Czechoslovakia and especially in southern Moravia. It is a fruit of many uses . . . it can be eaten fresh, cooked, dried, baked in pasteries, made into jellies, preserves, jams, butter, wine and spirits.

NAt JE TRNKA? (WHAT IS A PLUM FOR?) Herein lies an ageless controversy; for what use is it best suited. The wife contends that the "trnka" is for "povidla", but the husband knows it is for "slivovice" (plum brandy).

The process of making povidla may vary to some degree from area to area or even village to village. In Veseli nad Moravou area the plums were harvested in early September as they ripened. Generally, they were of two varieties, the "karlatky" or "puka6ky" a free stone and the "durancije" a cling stone. The workers sang as they worked and the gathering of plums may have been a time for song, romance and heartache.

The picked plums were carefully spread on clean rye straw in the cellar or other room to further ripen. In the evening after two or three days the "karlatky" variety were pitted and put into a wooden tub. Next morning the cooking began. The "trnky" were put into a large copper kettle (or vat) which had been thoroughly scrubbed with vinegar and salt and rinsed with water the day before. A special structure, in the yard or attached to the rear of the house was used in the cooking.

A steady medium fire under the kettle had to be maintained all the time and constant stirring was required to keep the plums from burning. The kettle was filled half way and covered, and as the plums cooked down more plums were added until the vat was full when cooked or all the plums used. Stirring the plums during the cooking was done by a four-faced paddle, the shaft of which protruded from the kettle lid. A handle attached to the shaft extended beyond the edge of the kettle and as the handle was moved back and forth the paddle mixed the plums. At intervals the lid was lifted and the contents were samples for consistency. As the plums thicken often time they bubbled and splattered inflicting minor burns upon the taster. Perhaps the word "lizaZka" comes from the habit of licking off the tasty splatters.

The making of povidla was a long, tedious, monotonous chore that ran continually for two days and two nights when the crop was plentiful. To ease the monotony and to lighten the work, friends came to help and much singing, joking and cavorting went on. In fact, too much so at times when the younger folks took over the chores in the evening. Someone always brought an accordion and hence merriment dulled the senses of duty and attention to the task at hand.

As the cooking continued the plums began to thicken and finally became prune butter or "povidla". Then it was ladled into earthenware containers, cooled, covered with clean cloth and stored. It was used throughout the year, and next harvest time the making of povidla began again. Povidla keeps well, it is known that even after ten years it still may be good and usable.

Using the "durancije" variety plums, the process of making povidla required a little more work. Since these are cling stone plums they were first cooked with the stones. When well cooked the plums were mashed through a strainer, a small broom, which had been thoroughly cleaned, was used to rub the flesh of the fruit through the strainer until only the stones remained. At this point in the process, an interesting and delicious event took place. The mashed and strained fruit, in a rather liquid form, referred to as "lizatka-, was put back into the kettle for its final cooking. But first small

amounts of the "lizaka" was packaged in small containers, distributed to relatives and friends, and some sold in the neighborhood by the children.

Now you have learned how "povidla" is made - but what about the husband and his "slivovice"? Well, happily for him, the story does go on.

There were always some later ripening plums, discarded plums from the making of povidla, overlooked fallen plums and no doubt withheld plums. All of these were gathered, put in a wooden barrel, left to ferment and then distilled into that "cure all" elixir "slivovice".

Most households made plum brandy. They had their own stills or borrowed one from neighbors. Others again, would await a mobile distillery that visited the villages. The operators of the still would keep one liter of brandy out of every ten liters distilled.

The Principles of Strength Training

Weight training and strength training should be an integral part of all advanced and elite gymnastics programmes. With advanced training, body preparation is important to prevent injury and allow the most rapid progression in acquiring new skills. Injuries are 60% less frequent in gymnasts who weight and strength train than in their non-trained counterparts.

Before any resistive weight training session is started, an adequate stretching and warm-up routine should be done.

In other words, the warm-ups prepare the body in many ways to help optimize the gymnasts' bodily response to strength training.

The following principles should be followed when performing the resistive strength training in order to gain maximum strength in the least time 1. The gymnasts; strength training should be progressive. They should constantly attempt to either increase repetitions or resistance during each work out.

Training should always be done to build strength, not demonstrate it. Neither fooling around nor seeing how much one can lift should be tolerated. An individual exercise should last forty to seventy seconds or seven to twelve repetitions to be most effective. More than fif teen repetitions causes failure from lack of oxygen rather than muscle exhaustion. A set of an exercise is finished when no additional movement is possible, not before. When twelve repetitions can be done by the point of exhaustion, the resistance should be increased five to ten percent.

2. The amount of strength gained is directly related to the intensity of the exercise. Individual muscle fibers in an all or none fashion. No more fibers will fill in a muscle than are necessary to move a given resistance. If the set is stopped before the point of failure, the maximum number of muscle fibers will not be involved in the exercise and the maximum benefit will not be obtained. It is also easy to see that a slight reduction in effort will cause a disproportionate decrease in benefit.

Less than maximal effort cannot be measured, nor will it do more than help your present level of fitness. It will not help increase it. Most people left to themselves will not perform to their maximum potential. Gymnasts are no exception. Supervision or "peer pushing" are often necessary to ensure maximum effort.

3. Each exercise should be done with very strict form to ensure maximum loading of the muscle groups to be worked by the exercise and to prevent injury from abnormal biomechanical loading of other areas.

4. Proper breathing technique should be taught prior to beginning any weight resistance programme. Generally when pushing a resistance away from the body, one sh6uld exhale and when bringing a weight toward the body, inhale. Or a more general rule is to exhale during the positive component of a move and inhale during the negative phase. With year round programs in 16 sports, over one million Special Olympians participate in sports activities in every state in the U.S., the District of Columbia and over 50 countries.

Years ago, experts in the field, of mental retardation claimed that mentally retarded people could not compete in sports, the retarded would not understand the concept of winning, the experts said.

Special Olympics has proven otherwise.

Today there are more than 7,500 Special Olympics gymnasts in the U.S. As Special Olympics attempts to improve and expand its gymnastics program, more and more volunteer coaches will be needed to train athletes, conduct gymnastics Clinics, develop local gymnastics programs, and open their clubs to special athletes.
