GOOD LUCK TO EACH OF YOU BECAUSE YOU DESERVE IT! *** In this issue you will find a picture of the West Trojan High Band along with their band director, Mr. Jack Felts, who has worked diligently with the group to achieve many meaningful awards on their performances for the past three years.

Meanwhile as their designated date is approaching, enthusiasm and excitement is the best way to express their feelings because they (band members) have achieved their goal for the trip to New Orleans, Louisiana.

Mr. Felts has the Trojan Band working on two very fine original Czech concert marches arranged especially for the band to play at the concert. The composer is Frantisek Kmoch and the arranger is Alois Piskor. The compositions are called "Sousa" of Czechoslovakia and "Night Flight to Madrid" featuring the fine trombones and baritones.

The West High School Polka Band will also perform at the World's Fair, which promises to be a very good program.

Several of the band members are from Cottonwood Lodge 6, West Lodge 54, and Waco Lodge 66, (actually, the larger portion of them are from Lodge 54.) The SPJST Society wishes the entire band the best of luck, and let's wish the approximate 80 individuals who will be representing Texas at the World's Fair, June 5th and 6th, a safe voyage home. *5* May 28th is Memorial Day. Let us pay tribute to those who gave their lives . . .Today we pause to remember . . . with gratitude and respect . . . the men throughout this nation's history who answered the call to arms and lost their own lives so that we can live in freedom and dignity. Today we count our blessings; we also consider their cost.

How to benefit from attending a convention. We think it is in order at this time, as we approach our 23rd Convention, to set forth some guidelines that may help you gain the maximum benefit from your attendance: 1) Evaluate the program. Study each session, speaker, workshop (if any), social function, well in advance, to get them fixed in your mind.

Underscore the ones that interest you most. Then some last minute distraction is less likely to divert you.

2.) Summarize your needs. One of the reasons for holding conventions is to bring members together so they can share in the planning, discuss common concerns, and exchange ideas. Jot down your own concerns and dilemmas and bring your notes with you to the meeting.

3.) Participate often. Unless you do, you might as well have stayed home.

4.) Command attention. Be sure to speak up when you have the opportunity. If you don't inject your interests and problems, who will?

Take advantage of discussion periods and reciprocate by answering as many questions as you can.

5.) Circulate. Keep on the go. The convention is your opportunity to contact others and learn what you want to know.

6.) Don't hide away. Mix at parties and receptions. The member you haven't spoken to yet may help you most. Introduce yourself to new people.

Remember that planned participation is the key to your getting the most out of your attendance. *5*

Awards Day at ACC —Spring 84 The annual Awards Day at Alvin Community College did take place on May 4, 1984 in the auditorium of the mentioned school. The program of this memorable occasion started at noon by the witty welcome address given by A. R. Allbricht of ACC. His very appropriate comments were followed by short notes of 34 other speakers, each of those presenting awards or scholarships to selected recipients in order to recognize their outstanding work in their vocations or to encourage them to further strive in their educational field. One of the 34 speakers was John J. Karas of Houston, a teacher of Czech for past 2 semesters at Alvin Community College, who presented on behalf of the Czech Club in Alvin two $250 scholarships to Jeff A. Orsak and Bryan J. Peltier. The annual Awards Day ceremony was closed by a short speech of A. R. Allbricht. The whole event lasted just over an hour, thanks to the excellent set-up of the organizers.

Czech Club of Alvin with its scholarship committee should be highly commended for making the above mentioned scholarships (Continued on Page 15)

Important Convention Update Dear Members and Delegates: I thought it might be good to bring you up to date on some of the matters pertaining to the next convention. Bro. Mikeska and I went down to Corpus Christi and the Convention Center this past Wednesday and tied up a lot of loose ends with the convention management and members of the Lodge No. 79 Convention Planning Committee.

This report will include a summary of important information that all delegates and those attending the convention will need to know.

1.) The Convention Planning Committee has determined that the packet for each delegate will cost $22. The packet will consist of various information plus tickets to the Monday evening function and the Tuesday night banquet. Admission to the Howdy Party on Sunday evening will be on the basis of badges that each delegate and visitor (name tags) is asked to wear.

THE WEARING OF THESE BADGES IS VERY IMPORTANT. There are no tickets per se to the Howdy Party and there will be a cash bar. The Howdy Party will be held in rooms on the second floor of the Convention Center overlooking Corpus Christi Bay. Should any desire tickets to only the Monday evening function, the cost would be $6 per person. Should anyone desire tickets for only the Tuesday night banquet and dance, these will cost $15 per person. Both the Monday evening function and the Tuesday night banquet will be held in an area adjoining the space for the convention sessions.

2.) There will be no food available for the Monday evening function, which will feature music and dancing by the Leo Majek Orchestra of Corpus Christi. There will be an open cash bar. Convention regulations prohibit bringing in your own bottle or beverages, so there will be no BYOB's. It is suggested that those attending the Monday evening function eat prior to coming.

3.) A local catering service will provide food for the noon meals only during the convention. The food will consist of light snacks, sandwiches, coffee, tea and soda water, etc.

There will be no hot or plate lunches as such.

4.) Shuttle buses will be provided to transport delegates between the two hotels and the Convention Center, but will not transport anyone to any other locations within the city.

These shuttle buses will operate principally early in the morning and after recess each day, which will be from about 7:45 or 8 o'clock in the morning and upon recess in the afternoon, probably around 5 o'clock.

Convention sessions will commence at 9 a.m., unless announced otherwise.

5.) There is ample free parking for personal automobiles around and at the Convention Center. There are 1,000 parking spaces around the Convention Center itself. There is limited parking in the basement of the Convention Center and parking there will be 500 per entry.

Holiday -Eberald Beach 1102 S. Shoreline convention delegates should gather on the main steps to the Convention Center for a picture. These steps are located on the side of the Center opposite the bay. Just follow the crowd to this stairway and listen to instructions from the photographer so that this session can be completed by about 9 a.m. Please be on time, be alert, and listen to those in charge.

After the delegates' picture, delegates will file inside the Banquet Hall for the opening of the convention. From the stairway (which is exposed to the outside), it is only a short distance to the lobby entrance where you will go past the registration desk, credentials desk, pick up other literature from the Tourist Bureau, and ascend to the second floor on the escalator to the left and proceed to the Banquet Hall.

There, members of the host lodge Planning Committee will greet the delegates, lead the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, make welcoming remarks, introduce a representative from the Corpus Christi Municipal Government, if available, and then introduce the president of the Supreme Lodge, who will formally convene the convention.

7.) Delegates will be seated on one side of the table only facing the main rostrum. The delegates will appreciate the padding in the chairs.

There is plenty of space so there is no need for crowding. There are three sections of seating on the convention floor and signs will be placed on the table designating the seating areas for the seven districts.

The designation of these areas was done by the Supreme Lodge officers in a random drawing of numbers, so it was done as democratically as possible, with no intention of giving any particular group or district seating preferences. With the acoustics being what they are and microphone arrangements what they are, there should be no difficulty or disadvantage in being seated anywhere in the convention hall. There will be plenty of microphones strategically placed among the delegates' seating arrangement for quick and ready access. There will be a special seating area for guests and nondelegates, most likely at the back of the delegates' seating. The area will be designated with a sign.

8.) The question has arisen about provisions for a smoking area and it is felt that the best solution to this question is to ask the delegates to refrain from smoking during the convention proceedings, BUT if they feel they cannot wait until the next break there will be an area designated as the "Smoking Area" at the

rear of the convention hall. A number of delegates have stated that they objected to the smoke of their fellow delegates in past conventions, but felt hesitant about registering a formal complaint.

Given the change in attitudes and national sentiment on this matter in recent months and years, however, it is felt that some accommodation should be made. We do not plan to ask the convention management to furnish ash trays on any of the tables except on those in the "Smoking Area". Without being partisan, we felt that both smokers and non-smokers would be treated equally with this arrangement and we hope that no one feels that they have been inconvenienced or discriminated against. We recognize both groups as having their rights— one to smoke if they wish and the other the right not to have to be subjected to smoke if they do not care to. We read about the various municipal ordinances and federal and state regulations pertaining to this matter and that is the reason we are taking this into account.

9.) Water pitchers with cups are being provided by the Convention Center for the delegates with fresh water.

10.) Attire. It has been decided that the attire for the Sunday Howdy Party and the Monday night function be designated as casual.

Further defined, casual dress for men would include shirts without ties (long or short sleeve) no coats, and dress slacks. No jeans, please.

For the ladies this would involve street dresses or dress slacks with blouses, but no shorts, halter tops or jean slacks, please. The attire for the Tuesday night banquet will be semiformal. For the ladies this means either floor-length dresses, street attire, or cocktail-length dresses.

For the men this means suits, but NOT tuxedos or after-6 attire.

Sport Coats with tie are permitted.

11.) There will be various excursions in the area (fishing trips, boat rides, etc., etc.) for visitors and non-delegates, but these will be strictly optional to the individual and will not be sponsored by any group, committee, or anyone connected with the convention itself.

In other words, these activities are available strictly on an optional basis. Information pertaining to such activities will be available from the Tourist Bureau and the literature you pick up in the lobby.

12.) The various meeting rooms for the committees have been designated and will be identified by signs being placed in front of the

rooms. The same goes for caucus rooms that will be in use toward the close of the convention for the seven districts. The district directors are asked to acquaint themselves with these caucus rooms and then lead or direct their district delegates to those rooms.

13.) Visitor tags will be available at the Registration Desk. Please wear them. They are different than the tags for delegates and committee members.

14.) A list of delegates' votes will be placed in each delegate's packet as was the case in the last convention. This will save a lot of time. It is pretty well self-explanatory and you will see that it contains the lodge number, the total number of votes from that lodge, and the number of votes that the top delegate has, and the votes that the other delegates will exercise. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THIS LISTING AND VOTE ACCORDING TO IT— NOT MORE OR LESS THAN THE NUMBER STATED The Tellers Committee will have these lists before them when they tally any votes and any delegate voting an amount different than is on the sheet will have his ballot voided, unless there are some last-minute changes in delegate attendance at the convention.

15. There will be three copies of the SPJST History available at or near the Registration Desk for delegates to look at. These are not to be removed from that immediate area. This version is not what the final product will look like, but it will be pretty close. The three copies will be spiral-bound, whereas the final book will be a regular hardback book-bind or soft cover. The contents of the book will be pretty much what the final product will look like. Final decisions on number of copies, hard and soft-bound, will be made in the July Supreme Lodge meeting, but these advance copies should give delegates an idea as to the content and general scope of the final product.

16.) We plan to furnish coffee, tea and soft drinks, and possibly donuts, during the .breaks. The donuts will be available only on Monday, but the liquids will be available for the duration of the convention, courtesy of the Supreme Lodge.

17.) We feel that the vast majority of our delegates will be coming in from the north and northeast and the main route of entry is 1-37 from the north. Highway 77 feeds into I37 in the north part of Corpus Christi. Still, others of you may wish

As you enter Corpus Christi on 1-37, proceed until you get almost to the water, which is the end of 1-37, That will be Shoreline Drive. Make a right and go approximately a mile to the La Quinta Motor Hotel or approximately two miles to the Holiday Inn. If you make a left at that same point, you will be roughly half a mile away from the Convention Center. Shoreline Drive runs along the water and is as far as you can go.

18.) For those who wish to eat out, there is a folder on Corpus Christi area restaurants that will be included in your packet, and if it's not in your packet, you can pick it up at the Tourist Bureau Desk in the

Convention Center lobby as you register.

If there is any other information that we feel you should know before you go to Corpus Christi, we will make every effort to get it in the Vestnik in time. Remember that there will be no Vestnik printed the week of the convention, so that means that the last Vestnik you will have until after the convention will be dated June the 13th.

SFM McBride held Dinner/ seminars at Taylor and Temple along with District II Director Henry Vitek for the active sales representatives in District II. Of the 70 producing sales representatives in District II, 35 were in attendance at these seminars. We appreciate the efforts of these , sales representatives and urge those that are not active to come join us aboard the SPJST train. We are moving on

to bigger and better things — "Don't be left behind".

It is the lodge and members duty to support the sales representatives of your lodge and to help them secure new members in order to keep your lodge alive and growing.

Silas Smith, SPJST State Field Manager attended the FIC/FFMA Meeting held in Minneapolis, Minnesota May 3rd thru May 5th. Brother Smith, who is a Fraternal Insurance Counselor, brought back many innovative approaches used by fraternal benefit societies in market-

ing their insurance products. The FIC designation has been in existance for thirty-four (34) years and is earned by an individual who bas studied the fraternal insurance system and is highly trained in this area.

The regular monthly meeting of SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood was held Sunday, May 6, 1984 at 3 p.m.

Pledge of Allegiance was led by Darrell Uptmor and Delton Stuckly.

Darrell then led the SPJST Pledge.

Roll call was called with all officers being present.

Secretary Barbara Hykel read the minutes of the previous meeting.

They were approved as read. All other reports given were in order.

Correspondence was read from the Supreme Lodge and the John Parma family.

Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz reported that the youth donated cakes to the West Rest Haven May 2nd. The youth members are making corsages for the residents at the rest home for Mother's Day. The craft cards have to be turned in by June 4th and camp cards by July 1st. The youth clubbers made pot plants and dusters for their mothers. The club will be having a Graduation Party at the West Swimming Pool, May 20th.

Stacie Mynar brought the Birthday Cake.

President Robert Dobecka thanked everyone who helped in anyway at the District III meeting.

The District III was a great success.

He also thanked Brother Cyrill Svrcek and Brother George Straten and Sister Josie Mae Straten for cutting the grass around the hall.

Brother Johnnie Krizan gave the Board of Trustees' report. He reported that the trustees discussed Westfest, work on the roof, a successful Easter Party, District III meeting, Form 990 to IRS, the upcoming SPJST Convention and date of next meeting. The board recommended that Robert and Lydia Dobecka be picnic chairmen for the upcoming picnic, completion of work on the hall and appoint a committee on donations.

There were 13 new adult members accepted and 2 new juvenile members accepted.

The $10 door prize drawn was Ronnie Matus, not present; $10 for William R. Mikeska, not present; $3 progressive door prize for Edward A. Havel, not present, and the $2 door prize was won by Christine Svrcek.

The next monthly meeting will be held at 3 p.m. June 10, and the Board of Trustees meeting will be at 8 p.m. Friday, June 8th.

The regular meeting of Lodge 74 was held at 7:30 p.m. May 14, 1984.

All reports were read and approved.

We had a new member Sherry McKenney to attend the meeting for the first time and we hope she will come back.

This is election year as we all know; one thing good about it is, we get to meet a lot of nice people.

Visitors to our lodge have been: Willie and Adeline Kohutek of Lodge 47, Seaton; Ann Balusek of Lodge 15, Buckholts; Dan Balusek of Lodge 47, Seaton; District II Director Henry Vitek of Granger Lodge 20; District VII Director Thelma Hrncir and Eugene Hrncir, both of Lodge 117, Robstown. We enjoyed hearing from each of them and hope they will visit us again.

The youth club gave away two corsages and a pot plant at our Saturday night social. The winners were Hazel Smith (corsage) and Chester Schmoldas (corsage and pot plant). Congratulations to both of them!

To all Lodge 74 members if you read your Vestnik, you have been reading the articles of candidates for Supreme Lodge offices. If any of you would like to voice your opinion contact one of Lodge 74 delegates who will be attending the convention June 18th. 12th Meeting For Lodge 81

June

Needville Lodge No. 81 met for its regular monthly meeting May 8th.

Everyone enjoyed a chili supper prior to the meeting.

President Charlie Matcek called the meeting to order promptly at 7 p.m. We were led in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag by Jason Walzel and remained standing in silence as a tribute to our deceased Sister Pauline Kuban. Our sympathy goes to her family. May she rest in peace.

All officers answered the roll call.

We were delighted to have, in our midst, visitors from Corpus Christi, Mr. Eugene Hrncir who is on the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes Board of Directors, Mrs. Thelma Hrncir, SPJST District VII director, and Mr. Frank Veselka, member of the Bylaw Committee for District VII. President Charlie Matcek called on each one of them to speak to us.

They welcomed everyone to Corpus Christi for the convention in June and expressed their views for the betterment of our great fraternal organization, the SPJST. The meeting was then called to

order for business. Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes of the previous meeting and read a card of thanks from the Caroline Uherek family.

Financial Secretary Jo Ann Morgan gave her report. Willie Mae Kuykendal gave the treasurer's report. Special Fund Treasurer Gil Walzel gave the schedule of activities at the hall for the month and then gave his financial report; all of these reports were accepted as given.

We were sorry to learn that Victor Werner was in the Methodist Hospital in Houston. We hope all goes well. Also Mac Fojtik has been in the hospital. We are glad to know that Brother Stanley Slacalek is at home now. We hope you keep on improving.

Refund checks were handed out and the attendance prizes were won

There being no further business the meeting adjourned.

88 Holds May Meeting

Lodge

The regular monthly membership meeting of Lodge 88 was held May 14th at 7:30 p.m. There were 136 members present to hear the reports of officers' and committees' activities for the past month.

Twenty-seven new applications for membership, plus two social members, were accepted.

President Ermis announced that the position on the Audit Committee, occupied by Sister Margareth Liebscher, will remain vacant for the balance of the year in her honor and memory. Sister Liebscher will be missed by all of us.

The Czech Play, which was performed April 29th, was a huge success. There were over 400 people in attendance and the performance was great. Congratulations to all who participated.

Donations are needed for the Country Store, and pastry is needed for the Pastry Sale Homecoming Day, June 3rd. Please join us for an exciting day. There will be many activities to entertain you.

The swimming pool has been prepared for the season and begins its summer session May 19th.

Swimming lessons will be available beginning June 4th.

Our Choral Group and Czech Concert Orchestra have been busy performing at various places, and are receiving invitations to perform at many others. Both groups performed at the Czech Fest in Rosenberg recently, and both are being considered to perform at the World's Fair in New Orleans. We are proud of them.

The Lodge 88 Men's Club has painted the tables in our back yard.

The Birthday Club sisters are busy selling tickets for the beautiful prizes they have gathered to give away Homecoming Day. Brother Harley Cox reported the first four months' profits for the Entertainment Committee. He suggests we keep smiling and support our lodge. Wonderful idea!

Committee, gave a report of the many hours donated to charity by our members, as well as the time donated by lodge committee members.

Board of Trustees Chairperson Mildred Holeman reported on the activities of the Board. She then introduced Brother Ed Zalmanek who spoke on behalf of Crime Stoppers of Houston and suggested that personal donations be made by willing members, along with a possible amount by our Board of Trustees, to assist this worthwhile organization.

A delegate's meeting has been called for May 21st. All District V delegates are invited. The district is providing a supper, beginning at 6:30 p.m., and the meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m.

I have previously reported that Lodge 88 would host the District V Family Day in September. This was an incorrect statement. I should have said that Lodge 88 has agreed to host the Day, provided the District V officers choose Lodge 88.

Our meeting Sunday was called to order by our President, Brother Jerry Milan. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all.

Brother Milan welcomed BrotherEugene and Sister Thelma Hrncir, their daughter Angie and Thelma's mother, Sister Mrazek. It was nice also to see Sister Agnes Chandler and her husband, Leon.

All reports were approved as read.

Correspondence was read from the secretary and financial secretary of the Supreme Lodge.

Brother Steinman gave a good report on the District III meeting.

We were sorry to have missed it.

Brother Milan reported on the large group that attended the Czech Film in Dallas, and it was enjoyed by all.

Sister Carolyn Cleveland reported on the Youth Club having their meeting preceding the Easter picnic. The Youth Club donated two beautiful plants for the oldest mother present Sunday; Sister Mrazek, who will be 84 years old and our youngest mother was Sister Anna Mason.

Brother Milan reported the District III Family Day will be held July 4 at Lodge 130, Dallas.

Sister Hrncir donated two tickets to Captain Clark's Flagship in Corpus Christi and they were won

by Sisters Mary Hale and Rose Steinman. Thank you.

Brother Milan reminded us to read the Vestnik on all the proposals.

Our guests were really impressed with our facilities. We were happy to have them. They really enjoyed the delicious dinner that preceded our meeting, everyone said that was the best fish they have ever eaten.

Sister Mary Renfro did it, again.

Sister Mary was excused early because she had to get Brother Bill (C.N.) to the hospital; he is in St. Joseph's Hospital, 1401 South Main Street, Ft. Worth, TX 76104. He was to have his surgery Tuesday morning. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Brother Bill.

We also wish a speedy recovery to Sister Lillian Smith who is in the hospital, and Chick Sales who suffered another heart attack. He is the stepfather of Brother Johnny Stoeppelman.

We extend our prayers and best wishes for the recovery of Brother B. W. Pavlicek, Jr. who was seriously injured from a fall. His father was on the SPJST Bylaws Committee at one time. He is the double cousin of my husband, Benny.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, June 10th.

We hope all you mothers had a wonderful day.

Dear Members: We have changed bands for our June 24th dance; we have Bobby Jones Orchestra from NeedvilleRosenberg area to play with a social FREE to Lodge 172 members and $6 to guests.

The lodge has lost one of our members, Sister Sophie Baker, age 70, recently. Surviving her are: husband, E. C. Baker; sons, David and Bruce, and 3 grandchildren. Our sympathy is extended to them and may their loved one rest in peace.

At our April 25th meeting, we had five new members and four social members which shows that our sales representatives are working.

Lodge 179 Meeting

Dear Members and Guests: Thursday night, May 10, 1984 at 8 p.m. a nice group had assembled in Warrenton Guest Room, when President Harold Bergmann convened the meeting. He also led the assembly in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

The minutes were read by Sister Paula Key in absence of the secretary who had other commitments. She also read the correspondence.

Arnold Peters gave the financial standing. He will also distribute the refund checks. Lee Leonhardt gave the treasurer's report. Both readings were accepted as given.

Paula Key gave a report on the baseball game. A motion was made, seconded and carried that the lodge will furnish a chartered bus and game tickets for the baligame for July 1st in the Astrodome at 12:35 p.m. Members wishing to attend must sign up at Warrenton Store from now until deadline, June 14 at 8 p.m., which will also be the next regular meeting. The bus will leave July 1st at 9 a.m. from Warrenton Store.

It was a pleasure to have District I Youth Counselor Susan Skrabanek, in our midst. Do visit again soon including all guests.

The Food Committee stated the lodge will furnish cold cuts and members bring cake, cookies, chips or the like for our June 14th meeting at 8 p.m.

The meeting was then adjourned.

Afterwards all enjoyed the delectable fried chicken and the great variety of delicious side dishes, desserts plus refreshments. The remainder of the evening was spent just good "ole" fellowship.

on Lodge 183

Dear Members, If you missed the last dance you missed a very good one. THE COUNTRY BOYS did a very good job of playing and everyone present were pleased with their music and hoped that they will be invited back soon. Members getting together and having a good time is what SPJST is all about. This is why the organization has grown so fast in the past and what keeps it going now, and to help the lodge grow we need MORE MEMBERS to come to meetings and socials: invite your friends and neighbors to the socials and encourage them to become members.

There were 5 members from Lodge 183 present at the District III meeting at Cottonwood Lodge No. 6, Sunday, April 29th; they were B. J. and Betty Hlavaty, Daniel Roznovsky, and Gracie and Norman Kneschk. It was a very good meeting. Those of us from Lodge 183 wish to thank Cottonwood lodge for their hospitality and a very good meal; also a big hand for the youth club for a wonderful program for the enjoyment of everyone present; we must all remember these youngsters will be the future officers and adult members of SPJST. All of you should be pleased to know that this is what has kept fraternalism growing in the, past and what will keep it going in the future.

Everyone should encourage the youth programs in your lodges.

On the sick list from Lodge 183, since the last newsletter, is Lambert Pustejovsky (had a small tumor removed from his eyelid), Harry Music is recovering from knee surgery, Walter Parsons (eye surgery) and Mary Ann Roznovsky had major surgery; the lodge wishes them well and hopes that they will be back to good health, soon. If there was any others that I missed I had not been told about them.

Saturday, April 21st Daniel Roznovsky, Lambert Pustejovsky, and Norman Kneschk, with the help of a licensed electrician, installed an exhaust fan for the hall and lights on the front of the hall to light up the front parking lot; sometimes the fastest way to get something done is to get some members together and do the work that needs to be done.

Remember, in every lodge there are people who watch things being done, those who make things happen and those who wonder WHAT HAPPENED!!! Unless you want to be classed in the last group, you need to come to meetings and socials; you may be surprised at the good time you can have at the lodge.

By the time this newsletter goes to press, the next meeting will be over, but, members, there is only one more meeting before the convention in Corpus Christi beginning the 17th of June; anyone in Lodge 183 who wishes to go should let Daniel Roznovsky or Phill Boyle know so they can tell you about hotels that are available and more about what will be happening there. Since he became president in 1968, the SPJST has grown immensely under his fine leadership with the cooperation of the officers and directors. of American SOKOL Organization May 13, 1984 Dear Members, The Southern District, American Sokol Organization Slet will be hosted by Sokol Karel Havlicek Borovsky at the Sokol Gymnastic Center in Ennis, June 1, 2, and 3, 1984. Sokols from throughout the state are expected. We hope all members and friends of Sokol will be there to join us in this annual event.

Volleyball championships will be held Friday evening beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the junior-mixed and senior-mixed divisions. Apparatus and rhythmic competitions will be held throughout the day Saturday, June 2nd. Special number competition will be held at 6 p.m. that evening. The awards dance Saturday evening will begin at 8:30 p.m. with music by the Brave Combo.

The Slet Sunday will begin at 2 p.m. Musical accompaniment will be by the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra under the direction of Brother Sid Pokladni.k. A dinner will be served at noon.

We look forward to seeing everyone in Ennis for a big Sokol weekend —June 1, 2, and 3.

eesat Annual Meeting In Moravia May 26, 1984 Officers and members of the Czech Ex-students Association of Texas (CESAT) will hold their annual meeting Saturday, May 26, 1984 at 1 p.m. in the Moravia Parish Hall, Moravia, Texas. All Members of CESAT are urged to attend this meeting which will include nomination and election of officers for the 1984-1985 term and discussion of various programs and activities planned for the current year.

In conjunction with this meeting the Texas Council for Higher Education (Texaska Matice Vy§§lho Vzclelani) will also convene to resolve various problems pertaining to student loans and tax exemption for the organization.

The Czech Ex-Students Association of Texas {CESAT) is a group dedicated to the encouragement of higher education among Texans of Czech ancestry. By focusing on the study of their ancestral language, literature, arts and music, the organization strives to preserve the Czech culture throughout the state.

While most members are present and former students of the Czech language, membership is open to anyone interested in its purposes.

Annual membership fee is $2.50; students $1.50. For membership application, write to Mr. Marvin Marek, 3218 Hunters Glen, Missouri City, Texas 77459.

CESAT through its subsidiary, the Texas Council for Higher Education (Texaska Matice VyS'S'iho Vzdelani) makes low interest loans to university students throughout the state of Texas and by means of this student loan facility can do much to stimulate and preserve the study of the Czech language and Czech culture at our colleges and universities.

May 10, 1984 our meeting was called to order by chairman Sadie Kubin. Thirty-one members and three guests attended the meeting.

Everyone was welcomed. Our guests were Vlasta Cerovska of Hradec Kralove in Cechy (Bohemia) near the Moravian border in Czechoslovakia; Vlasta is a first cousin of Bob Zvolanek, Lydia Kucera is from Denver, Colorado; she is the first cousin to Bobaliks in Ennis and is staying with some of them; welcome Lydia, I know of you through Anne Zmolek and Albina Hucek is from the Dallas area; it was nice talking to you, Albina! "Pani Cerovska, jak budete odjizdet od Zvolankt, mejte Atastnou cestu zpetky do Hradec Kralove."

After the secretarial and treasurer's reports were given, Sadie Kubin reported on the selling of tickets on the Krouzek quilt for Polka Festival. Anne Zvolanek sold 36, Stasie Hejny (12 tickets) and Libbie Wisnienski sold 13. Evelyn Novotny (non-member) sold some,

too. A report was also made on ladies who donated gifts for the Arts/Crafts table for Polka Festival.

These are: Sadie Kubin, Stasie Hejny, Bette Houdek, Rose Zazvorka, Georgia Tupy, Alice Roberts, Libbie Wisniewski, Rosie Bednar, Vojteska Janicek, Bertha Podhradsky, Annie Vrana and Albie Nesuda. Olga Ewing donated the quilt top for the Krouzek's Polka Festival quilt. Stasie Hejny gave the filling and the Krouzek furnished the lining; then all was put together and quilted by some of our Krouzek's enthusiastic quilters. The quilt was won by Floy Pokladnik of Dallas. The Junior Sokol quilt was made by Lil Laznovsky. Sorry about the error in the last writeup. I happen to be new at all this and sometime soon I'll catch on to the whole routine. I also ask the members to keep me informed; I don't live in Ennis, you know.

Birthday wishes were made at the beginning of the meeting for Ella Zmolek, Janie Marusak, Annie Vrana and Helen Vrla.

Hattie Lekar has a quilt scheduled to be quilted June 12th, our next meeting. Hattie also won the door prize this time.

Virlie Lipcomb's husband recently passed away. A moment of prayer was held for him in silence by the Krouzek's members and guests.

Some of you folks out there were interested to know who made those generous donations to our Krouzek in memory of Annie Hejny. They were: Jerry Koubek of Richardson, Frank and Mary Stransky of Ennis, Jerry and Georgia Stransky of Dallas, Rosie Hejny of Ennis, and Joe Hejny and family of Houston. The Krouzek is still thanking them. If all the thank you cards hadn't been received, we are still trying to obtain the addresses.

President Morris Deserves Reelection Dear Members/Delegates: In 1968 the delegates to the Dallas Convention trusted, placed their faith in and elected our husband and dad, Nick A. Morris, as president of the SPJST. The members' trust in and support for him has been evident these past 16 years. Prior to that be did an outstanding job as editor of the Vestnik for some 6 years. We are proud to know him as our husband and dad and as the very qualified, honest and hard-working leader of the SPJST. You can put your confidence and trust in him again and be assured that he will continue to achieve even greater progress and success for the SPJST in the coming term.

We ask your support and vote in reelecting our husband/dad to the office of president. We have witnessed his loyal dedication and love of the SPJST. We recall that many, many times he would have preferred to stay home and do things with his family, but he placed the SPJST ahead of us and tended to official business. We missed him on those many weekends but we supported him because he was doing what he thought was best.

During the period that he has been president, he was our husband and father, helping to solve our many personal problems, giving us advice, and showing us much love and understanding. (Children's personal note: Alongside our father was our wonderful mother who helped run our household, raise our family and who also gave us much love and security. As you know behind every successful man is a loving, caring and encouraging wife.

All the members of the Supreme Lodge and employees are a winning team. They deserve to be reelected.

The record of progress during our husband's and father's tenure as president is known to everyone, especially those members in the 14 new lodges that were organized in the decade of the '70's and in those 12 lodges that built new lodge homes during that period —more than the combined total of the previous 40-50 years! Also unequaled was the growth in certificates (members) and insurance for that period. The

SPJST is respected nationwide among other fraternal organizations. Our husband/dad is not claiming credit for this alone because there were many other people who were responsible along with him, but he was in office and was serving vigorously as president and had an active personal role in this growth and progress.

A few years ago, he was also very instrumental in effectively combatting legislation in Austin that would have required the licensing of our SPJST sales force.

He knows his way around the halls of both Houses of the Texas Legislature and enjoys a personal working relationship with key legislators. He serves as permanent liaison between the Texas Fraternal Congress and the State Board of Insurance and the Legislature.

Experience and proven competence serve as good reasons why you should reelect Nick A. Morris as president of the SPJST. He has served you well. God Bless you all.

10/VESTMK—Wednesday, May 23, 1984 The 1984 Youth Club year is almost at an end and I am very pleased with the progress each youth club has made. This is evident in the number of camp applications I have received (almost 100).

Here is a list of, things you need to bring to camp: 1) Bedding: sheet, pillow/pillow case, light cover (Sleeping bags are ideal) 2) 3 or 4 changes of clothes 3) Jeans and socks for horseback riding 4) Swimsuit and beach towel 5) Towel, wash cloth, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.

6) Flashlight (if you have one) 7) Comfortable shoes (tennis shoes) 8) Costume for party Note: I don't think fans will be necessary because we are camping earlier and there are large fans in each cabin.

I hope camp will be a great success. Campers, it is up to you to make this the best camp ever. See you there!

COTTONWOOD LODGE 6 HAS A BUSY SCHEDULE Dear Readers, The youth held their meeting at 2:15 p.m. May 6 with a good attendance, also had door prizes for Mother's Day. Corsages made by the youth club were for mothers of their lodge and for the West Rest Haven mothers. They also gave ivy pot plants to the lodge mothers, made and decorated from two liter sodawater bottles.

May 2 they donated cakes to the West Rest Haven for their Birthday Party There were no youth club birthday celebrants, however, Stacie Mynar brought the cake. Terry Hykel will bring the cake in June.

REMEMBER: I need everyone's craft cards and point sheets by June 4th.

District III YAD will be held July 1st at Lodge 154 in Fort Worth.

During the month of April, we had a very good bake sale April 20th. My thanks to all of you who donated cakes, kolaches, bread and other items; it was appreciated very much.

April 29th the District III meeting was well attended and everyone was nice and friendly. We were glad to have you all. I also wish to thank the youth club members and the group from Abbott High School for presenting their program for the District III meeting at our lodge.

CYCLONE LODGE 24 YOUTH CLUB PLANS EVENTS Dear Readers, The monthly meeting of Lodge 24 was held May 9, 1984 at 7:30 p.m. with an election and a barbecue dinner. There were 23 members and 2 adults in attendance.

First, we discussed about going to Prairie Dell Amusement Park for our summer outing. A date has not yet been set.

Under new business a discussion was held concerning purchasing a camera for our scrapbook and bulletin board. Youth Leader Carol Chervenka assigned Kim Schneider in charge of this project. Pictures will be taken at all youth functions.

For old business we discussed more about camp and YAD. The youth leader said she would mail us the camp forms. Mary (Martin) Novasad was born near Dripping Springs, Texas May 8, 1904. She passed away in the Wharton Manor Convalescent Home April 17, 1984. Funeral services were held from the First United Methodist Church of East Bernard, Thursday, April 19, 1984 at 10:30 a.m.

Mrs. Novasad had been very active in her church, especially the Women's Society of Christian Service, the PTA, and, for more than 25 years, assisted with all local elections. She was married to Paul T. Novasad April 17, 1927, who preceded her in death December 31, 1979. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. William J. (Mary Jo) Hlavinka of East Bernard, Mrs. Thomas H. (Frances) Cordelle of Houston, Mrs. Willie (Polly) Graves of East Bernard, and Mrs. Willard G. (Sudy) Coody of Weatherford; and one sister.

Mrs. Novasad was born to Edward Newton Martin and Salome Mary Martin. Her mother passed away when Mary was nine years of age, and her father was deceased by the time she was thirteen. A sister, Bertha, and a brother, R. D. Martin, were then reared by three aunts in Robstown, Texas, the Misses Hattie, Lillie and Phoebe Martin. After finishing Robstown High School, she furthered her education at San Marcos Normal School, where she met Paul T. Novasad. After teaching school in Driscoll, Texas for three years, she married Paul Easter Sunday, April 17, 1927. They spent the early years in Eagle Lake and Bay City, and finally in East Bernard.

She was a gifted needle woman, a fine cook and homemaker, trying to also teach these things to her four daughters. Mary and Paul celebrated their Fiftieth Anniversary with their many friends and relatives Sunday, April 17, 1977, as a part of the regular morning worship in their church, and afterward greeting friends at a Brunch in Fellowship Hall here.

One grandson, James W. Coody, preceded her in death Nov. 30, 1980.

Surviving, besides the above mentioned, are a sister, Mrs. Henry Foster of Kingsville, Texas; grandchildren, Paul T., Chris, Timothy, Stephen, and Toby Hlavinka; Joe and Bonner Cordelle; Melinda Hoffman, DeWitt, Cameron, Russell and Joel Graves; Cathy Zellers and Sam Coody. There are also five surviving great-grandchildren, William Hoffmann, Jennifer and Blake Graves, and Margaret and Matthew Hlavinka.

The Rev. Thomas A. Hill, Pastor of the First United Methodist Church here, officiated at the last rites. Pallbearers were grandsons of the deceased. Mrs. Phillippa Russek rendered several beautiful organ numbers.

She was a member of St. Luke's Catholic Church in Temple, the St. Luke's Catholic Altar Society, and a member of the Church choir. She was also a member of the Riverside Home Demonstration Club, SPJST Lodge No. 87, and KJZT. Services were held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, at St. Luke's Catholic Church. Rosary was recited at Sheffield Funeral Home. Monsignor Arthur Michalka officiated and burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery.

The ARCIE computer program is designed to help the farmer decide whether he needs crop insurance, and if so, what level of coverage he should choose. Twenty options are available to peanut farmers under the insurance program.

For ARCIE to evaluate all the options of All-Risk Crop Insurance, specific data are required based on the peanut farmer's production budget for the crop as well as his cash flow and the market situation, explains the economist.

The interpretation of the computer output on cash flow with each option requires careful consideration and weighing of the tradeoffs between risk protection and cash flow, he warns.

The economist gives one example of how crop insurance might apply.

Crop Insurance For Peanuts COLLEGE STATION— Because peanuts are a high-risk crop, with annual yields often fluctuating widely in dryland production, farmers need to consider some plan for risk reduction.

All-Risk Crop Insurance, available from a number of private insurance companies, can reduce the risk involved in peanut production. And a micro-computer program known as ARCIE (All-Risk Crop Insurance Evaluation) has been developed to provide farmers with quick and concrete decision-making information, says Dr. Ashley Lovell of Stephenville, economist with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, Texas A&M University System.

However, farmers need to act soon since the deadline for applying for crop insurance is mid-April, in most cases.

"Before ARCIE was available, the evaluation of yield coverage and indemnity price elections was a difficult and time-consuming task," Lovell says. "ARCIE has reduced that burden."

Over the years, farm management economists and farmers have identified and tried many strategies for reducing price and yield risks, Lovell says. Among these have been di versification, contracting, maintaining flexibility in cost structures, dispersing the farm operation over a geographical area, and intensification of production inputs such as irrigation.

Since each farm's production system is different, ARCIE can help producers evaluate their individual situation regarding crop insurance.

Relocation Benefits An employer's payments to a relocation service that buys the homes of transferred employees are generally not taxable as compensation to the emplyees, according to a recent private letter ruling by the Internal Revenue Service. Such rulings provide guidance but may not be binding in other cases. One exception: Reimbursed expenses imposed on homesellers by local law or custom.

People with hypertension may be able to get substantial reductions in their health and life-insurance premiums by lowering their blood pressure, suggests a survey of insurance companies published recently in the "Journal of the American Medical Association." The survey found that insurers will write standard policies—or reconsider a prior substandard rating—for hypertension patients who have reduced their blood pressure to a normal range for one to two years.

Lawns To Recover Slowly From Winter Most lawns will recover slowly this spring due to the unusually harsh winter, says a turfgrass specialist at Texas A&M University.

"St. Augustine lawns appear thin and slow to recover all over the state," points out Dr. Richard L. Duble with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service. "Floratarn St. Augustine, which is more sensitive to low temperature injury, was particularly hard hit."

Lawns that were in poor condition last fall were severely damaged by low temperatures in December and January, notes the specialist.

"Lawns affected by brownpatch, St. Augustine Decline, chinch bugs and white grubs last year were in a weakened condition before low temperatures produced further injury. Heavily thatched lawns also suffered extensive winter injury since the turf was more exposed to temperature extremes."

What can homeowners do to promote lawn recovery and prevent similar problems next year?

Duble suggests "scalping" the lawn in early spring with a mower to remove debris, applying a complete fertilizer to promote recovery, and controlling broadleaved weeds to reduce competition. "If these tasks are followed with regular maintenance, lawns should green-up rapidly," he says.

Scalping involves mowing the lawn with the lawnmower blade set 1/2- to 1-inch lower than normal and then removing the clippings.

Next, apply a complete fertilizer such as 8-8-8 or 12-12-12 at the rate of 1 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet of lawn area. This means 12 pounds of a fertilizer such as 8-8-, 8, which has 8 percent nitrogen (the first figure in the formula).

The specialist cautions against early application of preemergence herbicides for weed control on lawns since they may further slow grass recovery. "Weeds will be a problem this spring, but regular mowing and fertilization will keep weeds under control and give the grass a better chance to recover."

TN (*PURIFYING WATER Unless you are absolutely certain your home water supply is not contaminated, purify all water before using it for drinking, preparing food, brushing teeth or dishwashing. If the water contains sediment or floating material, strain it through a cloth before treating it. If the water is cloudy, muddy or discolored, filter the water through clean cloths or allow it to settle.

Pour or draw off the clear water to be disinfected. Water can be purified by boiling or by chemical treatment.

Boiling

Boil water at a rolling boil for 10 minutes to kill any disease-causing bacteria in the water.

Add a pinch of salt to each quart of boiled water or pour several times between clean containers to improve the taste.

Chemical Treatment

If water cannot be boiled, treat it chemically.

Two chemicals usually found in the home will purify water.

1. Chlorine bleach. Household bleach is a good disinfectant for water. However, check the label to be sure that hypochlorite is the only active ingredient in the bleach.

Do not use any bleach which contains soap.

Add per gallon of water 1 40 drops 8 drops 4-6 4 drops 7-10 10 drops Unknown (double for cloudy water) Mix the bleach thoroughly into the water.

Let it stand for 30 minutes. The water should have a slight chlorine odor. If it does not, repeat the dose and let the water stand for an additional 15 minutes. The taste or smell of chlorine in the water is a sign of safety. If the taste or smell of chlorine is not detectable after these procedures, the water should not be used.

2. Iodine. Household iodine from the medicine chest or first aid kit will purify water.

The iodine should be 2 percent United States Pharmocopeia (U.S. P.) strength.

Add 20 drops per gallon of clear water, and 40 drops per gallon of cloudy water. Let stand 30 minutes.

Water purification tablets available at drug and sporting good stores also will purify water. Follow manufacturer's directions.
