DHR Recognizes The Efforts Of The SPJST

Special guests were Erwin M. Dabbs. Regional Administrator of Texas DHR (Region 6) in Austin, standing at left and Mr. Dan Bullock of the Governor's Office of Community Leadership, standing next to Jerry Haisler.

Lavenie Hoelscher, and Joyce Kasberg did a beautiful job serving from the refreshment table. All the members of the Supreme Lodge received certificates for their efforts in promoting the Child Abuse Program in Texas. They are pictured here with Messrs. Dabbs and Bullock.

The lady on the extreme left in the striped dress is Harolyn Moreau, also with the Regional Office of DHR, who has been very instrumental in working with the SPJST Home Office with the Child Abuse Program.

Two beautiful cakes were on display and were enjoyed by all those in dt tendance. The cakes were baked by Mrs. Joyce Kasberg, Temple area caterer.

A special plaque wa., presented to the Supreme Lodge of the SPJST through its president, Nick A. Morris. by Mr. Erwin Dabbs, Regional Administrator of the DHR, on the right. (See accompanying report for text of plaque.)

A special certificate of appreciation was presented to the SP.IST Supreme Lodge through President Morris by Mr. Dan Bullock. (See accompanying report for text of certificate.)

Wednesday, April the 11th, the obby of the Home Office building was the scene of a happy gathering of officials of the Department of Human Resources (DHR), representatives from the Governor's Office, members of the Supreme Lodge SPJST and numerous Temple business and community/civic leaders. The gathering was the occasion of recognizing the efforts of the SPJST in its works and efforts to aid the Abused Child Project in localities around the State.

DEADLINE FOR MATERIAL TO BE ACCEPTED FOR THE FOLLOWING ISSUE IS THURSDAY.

At this time of the year 1984 we cannot turn the television or radio on without hearing about the politics of our national election primaries and/or caucuses in various states and, after each, we hear that a certain number of delegates are going to the national part v convention committed to vote for a certain delegate - example: "Mondale has 'so and so' many delegates committed to him, Hart has 'so and so' many, etc." That means that those delegates will vote for the candidate whether he/she is their personal choice.

This brings us to our convention in June and the same applies - each delegate represents 100 or more members at the convention and it is the fraternal duty of each delegate to find out (ascertain) how the majority of the members' he/she represents feel about candidates and by-law changes. This simply means that if the majority of the lodge members feel a certain way, then the delegate should cast his/her vote that way regardless whether that delegate feels the same way! Your editor has heard: "So & so says he/she is going to vote for - - -." The question arises whether our delegates are fraternally-democratically enough inclined to represent the majority of the members they represent?! We hope so because that is the only way democratic action can survive in our Society. If a delegate goes to the convention with the attitude: "I do not care how the members feel. I am going to vote 'so and so' ", then that delegate is not a representative delegate. *** Oh, for the life of an editor of a Fraternal Society! In the last two weeks, your editor has received a number of telephone calls (as usual), however, two were rather critical mainly about the 'political-type' letters written and printed in our Vestnik boosting certain candidates or individuals for office. One 80-year old caller said: "You have disappointed me, somewhat by publishing these letters because that's what we had in 1968 but we had another editor at that time; in 1969 you became editor and we had none of this political stuff since until this year, and it's mostly the same people; it is not fair and good for our Vestnik. I hope you can stop it. I wish you would mention it in your editorial; I'll be glad to verify what I'm telling you."

In life, this editor has learned that you have to take criticism along with praise or do as Pres. Truman used to say: "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen!"

Speaking of witness probably, you may never have cause to appear in a courtroom other than as a curious spectator, but there is a pretty good chance that you will. In the next 24 hours an automobile accident may take place before your very eyes.

You may well be the only disinterested witness present.

If you are one of those very bad

citizens who walk rapidly in the opposite direction from an auto accident, you will avoid appearing in a courtroom as a witness. But failing to step forward may cost someone serious financial hardship. You, of course, are not such a selfish person.

You are a good citizen, and presently you will receive a subpoena to appear in court. What are you going to do when you get there?

Tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, you will say, but that isn't enough. Your deportment in court may have a material affect on the credibility given your testimony, and it may have an even more important effect on your self-esteem.

Theoretically, the attorney for the party who subpoenaed you will instruct you in the rudiments of courtroom deportment. But practically he may forget such instruction. The trouble with lawyers is that they assume that you know the trivial details of the courtroom that are routine to them. They may throw you to the legal lions and later shake their heads sadly over your errors.

So, a court is in session and a jury is selected. If you think, as a witness, that you are going to watch the trial, you are mistaken. One party or the other will call for separation of the witnesses. The motion is always granted, and you will be escorted outside where you may neither hear nor see the trial.

The purpose of this is to keep you from consciously or unconsciously patterning your testimony to fit someone else's.

Finally, you are called into the courtroom. If you have not been sworn in before the trial, you will now be sworn in. You will then proceed to the witness stand.

When you get there, you may have the worst case of stage fright anyone has ever had. The whole room looks different - it seems that everyone is staring at you, ready to burst into peals of laughter at the first sound of your voice. You may stand there like a ninny waiting for someone to tell you to sit down.

Don't wait. Sit down, and when the lawyer who called you as a witness asks you what your name is, don't jump to your feet like a grade-school pupil.

This may seem silly to write anything so obvious as all this, but there are witnesses who want to pop to their feet every time a question is asked them, and many become so frightened that they cannot speak above a whisper.

The effect of such a hushed voice is that the jury may assume you have a guilty conscience about what you are saying. They may conclude that you are afraid for them to hear you because you know that your testimony is a pack of stories. The worst kind of whisperer is the one who fixes his gaze on a spot on the floor and cannot look anywhere else during the whole course of his testimony.

But assuming that you look frankly at the jury while you answer, you may also remember to wait a split second before you answer each question. This is especially true if you are being examined on cross-examination that is, by the attorney adverse to (Continued on Page 10)

It's a noble cause that the Supreme Lodge has adopted and the recognition actually belongs to those out in the field who have taken the time to make material and monetary donations to the Child Abuse Program in their communities. It's a program that definitely needs the support of the general public because who in our society is more helpless to help themselves than children, especially the very small ones. Opening remarks were made by Vice President Gebala, who then turned the program over to Jerry Haisler who then made appropriate remarks, introduced various individuals, and explained the overall objective of the Child Abuse/Neglect Program and how the SPJST has been instrumental in supporting this effort. All seven district directors were given certificates of appreciation for their efforts in promoting this program in their respective areas.

You've got a beautiful building, and I was glad to have the opportunity to learn more about SPJST programs.

I'm proud of your organization for joining the Texas Department of Human Resources in the Child Protective Program. This is a most worthy effort and much more effective through this special partnership.

Mr. Bernard M. Gebala In your trying to name at least one Scholarship recipient in each of the 7 districts, the applicant is put in an unfair position. According to the rules for Scholarship applicants there would be a selection of the top 28 out of the 86 applicants who would be judged on the letterreasons for wanting a scholarship, grades and so on. There is a 50% chance of winning a Scholarship in district 7 while only a 30% chance in district 3. Also by making an effort to name a scholarship recipient in each district you may have failed to name recipients according to rules of application. You may consider your selection of scholarship recipients more fair in the future by selecting the top % based on your application rules.

Yours truly, S.P.J.S.T. Insurance Policyholder Reply: The University of Mary HardinBaylor has assisted the SPJST in selecting scholarship winners. They have been asked to pick the most talented people. The District the applicant resides in has absolutely no bearing on the selection process.

The brochure telling about the SPJST Scholarship Program and its selection process is correct in every aspect. No member of the Supreme Lodge has any input as to the actual

4/VESTNiK-Wednesday, May 16, 1984 selection of winners and certainly UMHB has no interest in what district an applicant lives in.

Looking at this incident from a positive side, I hope we can all learn from this. It is evident that this member (?) does not read his Vestnik. It is also evident that this member does not realize that the SPJST is an organization that belongs to its members. Everyone should feel free to question a procedure and expect an answer, but it is also the member's duty to get all the facts before the criticism starts, because that can be very harmful and demoralizing to other members (and how sad it is when you later find out your accusation is not correct).

The SPJST Scholarship Program is a great thing for our young members. It is being administered fairly and impartially by my depart, ment and the actual selection is being done by very prestigious educators completely divorced of SPJST influence. I am really saddened to receive a negative letter such as the above, but I felt by making it public and responding it would make us all "better informed" members.

Johnnie Krizan To Members and Delegates District III; With the XXIV SPJST Convention fast approaching, I wish to take this opportunity to announce my candidacy as District III Substitute Director.

I am 36 years of age, a graduate of Baylor University holding a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree with majors in accounting and management, and presently selfemployed as an accountant specializing in tax • preparation and property management. Previous work experience as an accountant involved service for a construction company for four years, a real estate and land development company for five years, and two and one-half years with a public accounting firm.

During the last 25 years, I have been very active in the SPJST by having participated in the youth program, served the rotation of District HI officers, convention secretary to two conventions, delegate to three conventions, served my local lodge as president, secretary, and on the board of trustees and currently active as a sales representative.

As our Society races forward through the decade of the eighties and nineties, I offer my youth and business experience for your consideration. If elected, I will strive to represent every member of District III to the best of my ability regardless of geographic location. In addition, I pledge my support and loyalty to your current District III Director, Brother Sid Pokladnik, and will favor his re-election at the upcoming convention.

The SPJST has a glorious past with great promises for the future and I am proud to be a part of it. I wholeheartedly endorse the current Supreme Lodge Administration and will look forward to working with each of them in the coming years.

180 To Sponsor Benefit Battle Dance Lodge

A benefit battle dance for City of Joshua injured fireman in line of duty will be held Friday, May 18th from 8 to 12 p.m. at Lodge 180 at Burleson. The doors will open at 7 p.m.

Music for the evening will be provided by The Rainbow Valley Boys, and Ramblin' Rhythm.

One fireman had died and all proceeds from this benefit dance will be used to defray expenses.

Invitation To Interesting Lecture An

We would like to invite all members of our Lodge 54 in West to attend an interesting lecture given at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 19, 1984 at Lodge 54 in West, Texas.

This lecture and slides will acquaint our public with iridology which is a method to find the physical condition of human body and which organs suffer illness.

Dear Members: Lodge 66 will honor the mothers and fathers at the meeting May 20th at Linden Hall.

Lodge 66, April 15 Meeting The lodge meeting was called to order by our President Johnny Gaidusek at precisely 2:30 p.m.

Larry Yates and Bill Warren were the flag bearers with Larry Brem leading everyone in the pledge.

The roll call of officers showed that our youth leader and vice president were absent.

Guests present were Joyce Bantle of La Crosse, Wisconsin and Brother Rudy Zalman.

There were four new members and one with additional insurance.

They are Kaylee Pruitt, David Gaskamp, Kristopher Puryear, Karla Puryear and Debbie Galler (additional insurance).

Minutes of our previous meeting were read by our Secretary Bonnie Pruitt. They were approved as read.

She also read a letter from the main office of SPJST concerning the eligibility of one more delegate for our lodge.

Our Financial Secretary Darlene Engelke read the minutes of the board meeting. Then Brother Frank Miller gave the first quarterly report of the lodge's receipts. Also all charitable donations. Thank you for a job well done, Brother Miller.

The Entertainment Committee report was given by Brother George Shilling in the absence of his wife, Dorothy. Although Brother Shilling gave a good report, we all missed Sister Shilling's joviality and refreshing way of telling it like it really is. There will be a drawing for some flowers for Mother's Day. Ladies are asked to bring desserts to the next meeting for May 20th.

Our Cheer Committee reported sending cards to the Jimmy Motis family, Mrs. Ruth Goldsmith, Mr. and Mrs. George Pauling, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Shelton and Mr. and Mrs. Gene Owen. Get-well cards were sent to little Edward Mazanec IV, Steven Pankonien and Sister Glina Dungan.

Sister Jeanette Smith gave the Welfare Committee report. She read thank yous from Patty Cowen and family and the Mary Veselka family.

She brought up three requests for help they were: Waco Lighthouse for the Blind, Blanch Lewis and Timothy and Linda Grahams (baby sick at Scott & White).

Sister Yates gave the youth leader report for Sister Owens who was absent due to a death in the family. The youth were to keep collecting the same items as in the past and were to go roller skating.

There was one new member present at our meeting, Sister Nell Roberts. Welcome to Lodge 66 and hope we see you often at the meetings.

Under new business the members voted to hold the June meeting June 10 due to the convention; also it was agreed to leave the stage as is and not put up any curtains; only the cornace would be repainted and lights fixed.

Sister Annie Hanus said that the lodge needs to turn in its history for the convention to Brother Rudy Sefcik, Vestnik editor. Brother Otto Hanus said that he would compile it and send it in.

The lodge will have a clean up day May 12 beginning at 8:30 in the morning. Everyone who can is asked to come out and help.

Members were also asked to try and attend the District III meeting at Cottonwood Lodge 6, April 29th.

Field Manager Silas Smith reported on his trip to Victoria. He said if a person doesn't have any insurance, they don't have any benefits. He also asked that everyone give special recognition to Brother Otto Hanus for being such a faithful and loyal worker for the SPJST. Anyone wishing to send a card or visit Sister Agnes Mazanec, she is in West Rest Haven.

President Gaidusek presented 50year pins to Mr. and Mrs. Steve Andrle. They first purchased SPJST insurance in January and April of 1934. Congratulations to both of you!

Sister Parma was presented with a check for the Libbie Parma Trust Fund. She announced that Vikki Nors was the recipient of the scholarship.

Our door prize winner was Sister Irene Mueller.

Bleiblerville' s Annual Fish Fry The spring fish fry will be held May 20, 1984 at the SPJST Lodge 33 Hall located on Farm Road 2502 at Bleiblerville. There will be fried fish sold to go from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.; serving will begin at 11:30 a.m. The meal will consist of fish, catsup, bread, chips and slaw, all you want to eat for the price of $4.50 per adult and $2.25 per child. There will also be plenty refreshments and pastries available for your pleasure.

In addition to the day's festivities, a dance will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. with music by The Blue Czechs; admission to the hall will be $2. Dance ticketholders may win 20, 15, 10 or 5 pounds of hamburger meat, prizes will be given away at 4 p.m.; you must be present to win.

We hope to see a great crowd for everyone's enjoyment, eating a delicious meal and listening to some fine music, also come to see the remodeled Bleiblerville SPJST Hall.

Dear Members: Sister Reznik of the Teen Club led the members present in the pledge to our flag and, immediately afterward, the juniors and teens left the conference room to hold their meetings.

President Ondrusek welcomed and introduced our guests, Brother and Sister Eugene Hrncir of Robstown.

Secretary Salac read the minutes of the last meeting and also read the sunshine report, which was prepared by Sister Jarma and Sister Prasifka.

Brother Salac reported all fans have been installed and they are really doing a good job cooling off.

May 16th, the Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council are to meet at our lodge, hosted by WOW; everyone was invited to attend.

Youth Leader Bessie Petr reported on the Easter egg hunt enjoyed by the youth clubs, also practices for the dances are being held by those who are going to participate in the Ennis Polka Festival. The Princess Ball will be held July 21st, so make plans to attend.

Our PA system needs improvement, so Brother Paul Pokladnik is in charge of this chore.

It's not too early to mention our Czechfest being held September 16th; devote some thought and effort to his project which will benefit your lodge, something made by your own hands and donated to the event will certainly be a work of art for some lucky person to take home; think about it! Of course, a lot of things are being planned for that day, but this is a start especially, now that since school will be out and no more carpooling and you will be looking for things to do.

Between now and September, attend our regular dances: May 19 — Music by Czech Harvesters, and June 2 —the Jodie Mikulas of Ennis.

The regular meeting of Lodge 187, Round Rock, was held Sunday, April 29 with a covered dish following.

We were delighted to have as our guest Brother Vitek and his lovely wife. Bringing to our membership several advances that have come about within SPJST during the last four years, Brother Vitek spoke very encouragingly of SPJST's progress. He also shared the recognition given SPJST by the Department of Human Resources for our involvement in the Child Abuse Program.

We elected a new trustee to replace Logan Bartz who had to resign his remaining term. Neal Boydston will serve the balance of Logan's term. We wish to express our thanks to Logan and look forward to his serving with us in the near future. Welcome aboard, to Neal. We know you will serve Lodge 187 well.

Another important topic for the evening was our Mayfete which is set for Sunday, May 20 with the crowning of our queen at 3:00 p.m.

Brother Red Oman is chairman of our Project Committee and will gladly accept any and all donations for this activity. We encourage all our members to volunteer a donation to help the cause. Monies from the proceeds go, toward

Brother Nick Morris has made us a fine president. He is a good speaker and is a good mixer with all nationalities, for he can speak several languages. He has the college education and the experience needed for this position.

esat Annual Meeting In Moravia May 26, 1984 Officers and members of the Czech Ex-students Association of Texas (CESAT) will hold their annual meeting Saturday, May 26, 1984 at 1 p.m. in the Moravia Parish Hall, Moravia, Texas. All Members of CESAT are urged to attend this meeting which will include nomination and election of officers for the 1984-1985 term and discussion of various programs and activities planned for the current year.

In conjunction with this meeting the Texas Council for Higher Education (Texaska Matice Vy§§fho Vzdelani) will also convene to resolve various problems pertaining to student loans and tax exemption for the organization.

The Czech Ex-Students Association of Texas (CESAT) is a group dedicated to the encouragement of higher education among Texans of Czech ancestry. Josef Lidumil Lesikar Historical Marker This is to notify all direct descendants of Mr. Laikar and the descendants of all the Czech people that came to Texas in 1853 on the "Suwa" under the leadership of Josef Lidumil LeAikar that there is a drive underway to erect a historical marker on Mr. LeAikar's gravesite in the New Ulm Cemetery, New Ulm, Austin County, Texas.

The 12" x 16" bronze marker will cost $183.75 of which $173.00 has been collected. The granite base to which the marker is to be attached will cost $225.00 plus $25.00 for a concrete base.

Funeral services were held Saturday morning from St. Luke's Catholic Church in Waco, with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery in West. Sharon was the daughter of Bennie and Darlene Engelke of Waco, and the entire family are members of Lodge 66, Waco. Seaton School Reunion The bi-annual reunion of all former teachers and students of Seaton School will be held Sunday, May 27, in the school cafeteria.

The school was established as early as 1885 and was first known as "Fair View". It was the last Bell County rural school to be annexed to the Rogers district in August 1975.

Registration will begin at 10 a.m. after which lunch will be served at noon. All attending should bring enough food for their families.

Plates, napkins, bread, drinks and all other necessary items will be furnished.

Martha Lynn Bartos

An Energetic Jumper First grader, Martha Bartos, should be quite proud of the trophy she received at Hutchins Elementary School for raising $513 in the Jump-a-Thon for the American Heart Association.

Martha, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Bartos of El Campo, was one of several children who took part in the fund-raiser. First, second and third graders at Hutchins School raised over $8,000, an increase over last year.

Martha is a member of SPJST El Campo-Hillje Lodge 40 and of the Youth Club.

Our last meeting was held at 6 p.m. April 29, 1984, in the Youth Room of Round Rock.

At our last meeting we discussed YAD, Camp and Royalty. We discussed who was eligible to go to camp and see how many people are going to participate in YAD. There are four young men and young ladies who will participate in royalty. They are Valorie Giarrusso, Lori Nelson, Stephen Keltgen and Eddie Giarrusso. Good luck!

We also discussed the activities for May. Sunday, May 20th, the SPJST Round Rock Mayfete will be held. There will be a dance afterwards.

Sunday, May 27th, we will go to Friday Mountain Camp. We will leave at 8 a.m. and come back at 9 p.m. You will need to bring a sack lunch and swim suit. We will also have a wiener roast and have our May meeting there.

We also discussed having a membership drive. We decided that the members who like to attend the activities must come to the meetings to find out what we will do for the next month. We will no longer write the activities up in the Vestnik.

Our next monthly meeting will be May 27, 1984 at 6 p.m. in the Youth Room in Round Rock.

NEWS FROM LODGE 39, BRYAN YOUTH CLUB Dear Members: Our lodge held the District I meeting Sunday, April 29th and several lodges were there.

We presented a short skit along with the Centerville lodge. We dressed up as monsters and did the "Monster Mash."

We also saw slides of Camp Lone Star. I am looking forward to going to camp there.

During the social, after the meeting, some of us kids picked dew berries around the lodge.

LEROY HAMPTON. who passed away April 11, 1984 at the age of 62 in a Ft. Worth hospital after a sudden illness.

Brother Hampton was a native of Stephenville. He served in WW II in the 36th Division. He was a member of Knights of Columbus, a past Grand Knight of Council 759 in Ft. Worth, and was one of the organizers of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Burleson.

Brother Hampton was an active member of SPJST Lodge 180, serving in various capacities. He was one of the instrumental members in organizing and getting SPJST Lodge 180 started in the early stages. At the time of his death he was chairman of the Board of Trustees, and a sales representative.

Rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m.

Friday, April 13 at St. Ann's Catholic Church. Funeral Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Ann's Catholic Church. Burial was in the Prairie Springs Cemetery, Burleson.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Hampton; three. daughters, Jean Dupew, Donna Looney, and Teresa Hampton; one son, Roy Hampton; and ten grandchildren of Burleson; also three sisters, Sylvia Bruce, Gladys Williams and Tommie Buchanan, all of Stephenville, Texas.

May our departed brother rest in eternal peace.

Resolution Committee: Frances Simmank Mydell Grochoske Kitty Rippin -SPJSTEXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 24, wish to express our deepest sympathy, on behalf of our officers and entire membership, to the bereaved family of JOSEPH H. KAMAS, age 95, who passed away April 18, 1984, in a Temple nursing home after a lengthy illness.

Mr. Kamas was born in Austin County. He was the son of Joe and

Rogina Vanek Kamas, early settlers of the area. He was reared in Austin County.

He was married to Miss Frances Ann Pechal in 1912. She preceded him in death in 1971. They moved to the Seaton-Zabcikville area in 1914, where he lived and farmed until his retirement 10 years ago, when he moved to Temple.

He was a member of the Temple Brethren Church and SPJST Lodge No. 24.

Survivors are two sons, Henry Kamas of Temple and Edwin W. Kamas of Dallas; one daughter, Mrs. Henry M. (Georgia Ann) Eberhardt of Waco; one sister, Mrs. Antone (Rosie) Pechal of Temple; one brother, Tom M. Kamas of Nelsonville, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

Visitation was held at the Sheffield Funeral Home in Temple from 6 to 8 p.m. April 19. Graveside services were held at 10:30 a.m.

April 20 at the Hilicrest Cemetery with the Rev. Mark Labaj officiating.

The "Yes" is responsive, but you were not asked whether the defendant's reputation was good or bad. A foundation for such testimony must be laid before you are permitted to give it. It must be shown that you actually have means for knowing about the defendant's reputation.

Ordinarily leading questions are not permitted in direct examination.

A leading question is one that suggests the answer desired. For example, a lawyer, on direct examination cannot ask: "Did my client have the green light when he entered the intersection?"

The latter question does not suggest an answer; you are simply asked for information.

But let us assume that the ordeal of direct examination is over. Don't pop out of your chair and rush for the exit. The lawyer on the other side will probably want to crossexamine you, and of course, he has a right to His questions may be leading, and most of the technical "shackles" are off. Obviously, he must have discussed the case, and the damage of his lie that he has not discussed it may be very great, for he has demonstrated to the jury that he is capable of lying when he thinks his side needs protection.

Of course, all witnesses are not timid. Some are the "arrogant" type who want to prove to the judge, jury, and lawyers that they know the ropes. Such a witness is the worst type of all. The jury, being composed of normal citizens, resents (Continued on Page 15)

Survey Here Seeks Data On Adult Education Census

The U.S. Bureau of the Census will conduct its regular survey on employment and unemployment in this area during the week of May 1419, 1984, according to John E. Reeder, Jr., Director of the Bureau's Regional Office in Dallas.

In addition to the usual questions on employment and unemployment the May survey will have questions on adult education.

The survey is conducted for the U.S. Department of Labor in scientifically designed sample of approximately 71,000 households throughout the United States.

Employment and unemployment statistics based on results of this survey are used to provide a continuing measure of the economic health of the nation.

For example, in March 1984 the survey indicated that of the 112.9 million men and women in the civilian labor force, 104.1 million were employed. The nation's unemployment rate remained at 7.8 percent.

Information supplied by individuals participating in the survey is kept strictly confidential by law and the results are used only to compile statistical totals.

Towns and Villages of Czechoslovakia

Last week, 4 May 1984, was the 65th anniversary of the tragic death of General Milan R. Stefanik, after whom one of our SPJST Lodges, No. 142 in Houston, was named.

General Stefanik was the first minister of war in the early Czechoslovak state and helped to form and organize the independent Czechoslovak Army in World War I. Along with Benes and Masaryk, he was one of the outstanding leaders in the Czechoslovak movement for independence.

Stefanik came to the United States in June 1917 to gain Czech and Slovak recruits in this country for the Czechoslovak Legion which was then being formed in France.

His success in these efforts was not marked but he did a tremendous amount of good in securing the cooperation of the Czechs and Slovaks in the Czechoslovak movement. The American Slovaks agreed to cooperate in this movement on the basis of a program of the Slovak League of America. This was Stefanik's greatest success in the United States.

Milan Stefanik, a true Slovak patriot, was killed in an airplane crash 4 May 1919. This day is celebrated everywhere by Czechoslovaks as Stefanik Day in honor of their beloved war hero. His death is especially tragic in view of the fact that he was so able to achieve Czechosiovak cooperation, while never losing sight of the true interests of his own Slovaks.

Persons researching a family history which has its roots in Eastern Europe are often faced with a multitude of obstacles. Language can present a major problem. The shifting political borders can be confusing. Research dealing, with this part of the world can be compared to tackling an incredibly complicated jigsaw puzzle.

History has created formidable problems for genealogical researchers. During the last century political developments have wreaked havoc on the map of Eastern Europe, not to mention the emotional scars left on the population. In the case of Moravian immigrants in Texas, it is necessary to realize that in so many ways the Moravia which they left a century ago is not the Moravia of modernday Czechoslovakia that we know.

A century ago the historical Czech lands of Bohemia, Moravia, and a portion of Silesia were a part of the Austrian Empire. A very few Czech villages belonged to the Prussian Empire. Slovakia and Ruthenia were technically a part of the Austrian Empire, but were totally under Hungarian administration. In official documents the names of Czech towns and villages, until the end of World War One, were referred to by German names. The following are Czech and German names for the same town: TeAin-Teschen, PfiborFreiberg, Istebnik-Stiebnig, LipinaKarlshiitte, Haj-Freiheitsau. In many cases the German name was only a transliteration of the original Czech name. In such a case the

Czech name can be easily enough determined. In Slovakia and Ruthenia towns and villages were officially referred to by a Hungarian name. Unfortunately for researchers, the Hungarian names for Slovak and Ruthenian towns do not so often resemble each other as do the German and Czech names for villages. The following are names of Slovak and Ruthenian villages along with Hungarian versions of the same name: PreAov-Eperjes, UihorodUngvar, Levoea-Locse.

It is interesting to note how the quirks of Eastern European politics have dictated a change of name for certain towns of Czechoslovakia. The modern-day city of CeskY TeAin is one example. In 1920 the city of Te§in was divided between Czechoslovakia and Poland. Poland received the historical section and Czechoslovakia was awarded the newer industrialized suburbs. The Polish section retained the name Cieszyn, but the Czech portion was rechristened eskY TeAin /Czech Tain/ to distinguish it from the Polish section and to assert the Czech claim of ownership to the city.

Another example is the modernday industrial city of Ostrava. In the 13th century the towns of Morayska Ostrava and Polska Ostrava were founded at the junction of the Oder, Ostravice, and Opava Rivers. The Ostravice forms the border between Moravia and Silesia. Morayska Ostrava was located on the left bank of the Ostravice, and Polska Ostrava was located on the right bank. After World War One Poland claimed Polska Ostrava, but the town was awarded to Czechoslovakia. To dampen Polish claims to Polska Ostrava, the town was renamed Slerska Ostrava. Then in 1920 both towns were incorporated as Ostrava, as the whole metropolitan area is known today. In another case, the adjective "nemecke" /German/ was dropped from the names of all towns and villages in Czechoslovakia, due to Czech disillusionment with treatment at the hands of the Germans and a desire to erase German claims to Czech territory. In ancient times German colonists had been invited by the Czech monarchy to settle in Czech territory, thus villages with a name prefixed by "nemecke" had arisen. All such names have been changed today.

The political borders in Eastern Europe, altered so frequently throughout history, present a problem to researchers in America.

Prior to 1918 locations in Bohemia, Moravia, and Silesia were referred to as Austria, Germany, or Prussia.

Locations in Slovakia and Ruthenia were referred to as Hungary. In 1918 the nation of Czechoslovakia was created from Bohemia, Moravia, Slovakia, and parts of Silesia and Ruthenia. Unfortunately these borders were not permanent. The whole map of Eastern Europe was to be redrawn. In 1939 Germany seized the so-called Sudetenland of Bohemia and other portions of Czechoslovakia that bordered Germany and Austria. In the same year Poland seized the long coveted 'reAin region of Silesia from Czechoslovakia, and Hungary took Ruthenia and parts of Slovakia.

Slovakia, somewhat reduced in size, declared itself an independent nation. Following World War Two and the Yalta Conference,

Czechoslovakia pre-1939 borders were restored, except in the east.

There Soviet Russia seized Ruthenia and attached it to the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic.

Researchers who must begin genealogical research with information passed on by word of mouth that a family emigrated from "Germany" or "Hungary" may be looking for a town or village located in any one of a half dozen nations of modern Eastern Europe.

Further changes on modern maps have been brought about by economic development. In the past century certain towns of Czechoslovakia have become highly industrialized and experienced enormous growth. Some of these towns have absorbed neighboring villages, and the name of the annexed village has usually disappeared in official use. Still other towns have not grown significantly in a century. Even though a village may have been an important center of .19th century emigration and may be a name encountered frequently by American genealogists, it is possible that the location may have been absorbed by a more dynamic neighbor or has remained so small that it is not listed on modern maps.

As an example, thirty-one families from the village of Provodov in Moravian Vala§sko settled in Ennis, Texas. Modern maps do not show Provodov, however. A researcher usually must content himself knowing that Provodov lies near Vizovice, which is shown on maps.

Another example is the town of FrYAtat. A century ago Karvina was a small suburb of FrSrAtat, but Karvina has grown tremendously and has absorbed FrVAtat and surrounding villages. The old name FrY§tat is no longer used officially.

In 1945 the city of Ostrava incorporated many neighboring villages, some of which are frequently sought by Texan genealogists: Vitkovice, Hrabova, Hrabilvka, Michalkovice, Poruba, Ref manice, Zabfeh, and others.

It should be noted that the population of Eastern Europe is quite dense, much more so than in America. For an American visitor it is today often difficult to distinguish where one village ends and another begins. It may be more practical today for adjoining villages to combine rather than function separately. Genealogical researchers should also consider the antiquity of settlements in Eastern Europe. Localities have uncountable years of history behind them, which is often reflected in names. The Czechs have not only applied names to their towns and villages, but also to seemingly every geographical nook and cranny. Local history is also reflected in these. The following are the names of areas of fields and woods surrounding the town of FrenAtat, along with the official numbering of the holding. /A century ago houses and fields in Czech towns were numbered/.

It is therefore important to realize that history is reflected in the names of localities, whether they be towns, villages, or a hillside. There exists in Eastern Europe a rich depository of names of localities, which modern history can draw from. These names will surface or recede from common usage, as politics and social developments dictate.

Genealogical researchers are frequently faced with the problem of tracking down a village which has a common name. In Bohemia, for example, there are over three hundred villages which have the name Lhota or Lhotka. Moravia has duplicate Bohuslavices, Domaiovs, Jindfichovs, Lomnices, Oiechovs, Veselis and Zab •ehs, just to mention a few. Some of these over the centuries have been distinguished by adding a descriptive adjective to the name. There exist an Upper Lhota, Lower Lhota, Red Lhota, Silver Lhota, etc. In the past century the names of some towns have been modified. Sometimes a preposition followed by the name of a town or mountain has been added to a name. The Silesian town of Naysi is officially called Na ysi u Jablunkova. Jablunkov is a town near Na ysi. The name translates as "Naysi near Jablunkov." The towns of Fren§tat and Ranov are today known as Fren§tat pod Radho§tem and Ranov pod Radho§tem.

Radho§t' is a mountain in northeastern Moravia and "pod Radhatem" means "beneath Radho§f." (Actually means at the foot of Radho§f —Ed.) Zelechovice is today called 2elechovice nad Dfevnici /Zelechovice above Dievnice/.

Genealogical researchers will certainly encounter misspellings or variations of Czech names. Under Austrian rule variations of some Czech town names were used. The following are names of Moravian and Silesian towns along with frequently encountered variations of the name Vratimov - Ratimov Mni§i - My§i Doubrava Dombrava Pettvald - Petvald Komorni Lhotka - Kameralna Lhotka Karvina - Karvin Vleovice - Veleovice.

Many villages along the CzechPolish border near Ostrava and Ceskk Tain had both a Czech and a Polish name. Both the Czech and the Polish names were officially spelled to conform to proper Czech or Polish orthography. In some cases such spellings did not correspond to the local pronounciation of the name. The following are Czech and Polish names for towns of Czechoslovakian Silesia: Bludovice - Bledowice Komorni Lhotka - Ligotka Kameralna Lazy - Lazy Poruba - Poreba Tiinec - Trzyniec Bohumin - Bogumin.

The modern-day administrative centers of Czechoslovakia do not strictly correspond to the administrative centers of the Austrian Empire. This can present a problem in tracing records. Some problems have been encountered in tracing records of the Catholic Church, especially in Silesia, where the modern-day Czech-Polish border does not conform to former diocesan boundaries. Many villages of modern-day Czechoslovakian Silesia were, during German rule, within the jurisdiction of the diocese of Vratislav /modern-day Wroclaw, Poland/. To exaggerate, it might be said that the Czechoslovak Republic was a nation composed chiefly of minorities with a miniscule population of Czechoslovaks. The nation of Czechoslovakia had never before existed in history until 1918, and its creation caught by surprise some of the population, who accepted German and Hungarian rule as a way of life and who had only vague knowledge of the past glories of Czechoslovak history.

A majority of immigrants in HostSrn /Fayette County/ and Tours /McLennan County/ came from Fren§tat in Moravia. Immigrants from Vsetin, Polanka, Lana, and Pozdechov predominated in Taylor !Williamson County/ and those from Hovezi u Vsetina formed a majority in Plum /Fayette County!, Texas.

There are certain advantages to the complexity of Eastern European geography and the changes it has undergone in the past centuries, even though these are not always readily evident to a genealogical researcher. Because of the name changes which towns and villages have undergone, it may be possible to fix a period of time according to the form of a village name which is used. The variation of a village name passed down by word of mouth or encountered in records may indicate an approximate date of birth or period of immigration. The creation of the Republic of Czechoslovakia offers a fixed date for those researching more recent waves of immigration. Czechoslovakia, of course, did not exist prior to 1918 and any reference to Czechoslovakia fixes a date at later than 1918.

Another advantage to knowledge of Eastern European geography is the knowledge of history which is imparted. It is impossible to acquaint oneself with geography and not to learn something of history, and history, of course, is the substance of genealogy.

A study of geography and history may be the only means for a person to research family history, particularly in those cases where only a village name has been passed down. It should be stressed that, despite seemingly insurmountable obstacles, with an investment of time and research it is possible to locate almost any village of origin in modern-day Czechoslovakia.

The Nominative and Accusative Cases: In Czech the nouns are declined according to their grammatical functions in the sentence. The nouns that have been listed in the vocabulary have been in the nominative case. The nominative is the case of the subject of the sentence or of the predicate nominative (after the verb "to be"). The nominative is also the case of a noun standing alone (unless in direct address, or understood as a part of an incomplete sentence).

The accusative case is the case of the, direct object of transitive verbs.

It tells what person or object is directly affected by the action of the verb. It answers the, questions: Whom? What?

The masculine inanimate and neuter hard nouns have the same form in the accusative as in the nominative. The feminine nouns change the ending "a" to "u": Ex.: Ex.: Masc. Inanimate Fern.

Vafenik kvetak v be§amelove ornaece 1 kvetak (800 g), sul, 4 vejce, 2 cibule, 150 g uzene slaniny, 30 g hladke mouky, 1/2 I vyvaru (i z kostky), 2 Iiice hofoice, napf. Bona, Delico apod., mletY pepf, 1 !Mica cukru, 1 svazek paiitky. Kvetak o6istime, opereme a v osolene vode asi 20 minut do mekka uvailme. Nechame stat v tepte. Vejce uvafime na tvrdo (asi 8 minut), cibuli oloupeme a nasekame na drobne kostiaky. V kastrolu rozpustime slaninu, nakrajenou na nudli6ky, pridame cibuli a nechame ji zpenit.

Zasypeme moukou, promichame a zalijeme vYvarem. Na mirnern ohni 10-15 minut vafime a °boas zamichame. Okofenime hofeici, soli, pepfem a cukrem.

Uvafena vejce ve studene vode zchtadime, pak je ,oloupeme a nakrajime na otvrtky. Do jednotlivYch talifu nalijeme porci omaoky, do ni vloiime otvrtku kvetaku, nakrajena vejce a vae zasypeme nadrobno nasekanou paiitkou. Podavame s novYmi vafenYmi brambory.

Another great evil of the witness is that he may delude a lawyer into thinking he has valuable testimony when all he has is a ham actor's yen to appear in the center of the stage.

Notwithstanding the existence of showoff witness, the bulk of the people called to testify in courts are but lambs led to the slaughter. They change their personalities - yes, even their souls -- when they sit in the witness chair. In all good faith they will tell a story entirely different from the one they have told before.

There is no witness who must be liked by everybody. As soon as the adverse counsel cross-examines him, he has to modify his story in order to ingratiate himself with the adverse counsel.

So far little has been said about the simple matter of telling the truth when you get on that witness stand. It takes a lot of native intelligence and a perfect memory to "lie" in a courtroom. Most people are fools to try it. However, the cleverest "storyteller" is often concealed behind a stupid face.

Take two witnesses - one a smartly dressed chap, the other a fellow in baggy overalls. Which is the more apt to be believed? The latter, of course. He blinks his eyes, scratches his head carefully before each answer, and you just know he is telling the truth. But that nattily dressed chap, you want to look out for his glib replies - he is clever.

I remember a trial in which a simple farm laborer kept addressing the lawyers as well as the court as "Your Honor." It was both flattering and touching, but a subtler liar never lived.

You have one consolation as an amateur in the courtroom and it is this: in the courtroom the worst of all possible witnesses is a person who is considering all the angles of the admissibility of evidence. Sometimes the delay convinces the jurors that this type of person is dreaming up a clever answer; moreover he is inclined to stare into space and this indicates he is afraid to look the jurors in the eye.

Of course, 100 percent truth from any witness is unattainable, for there is nothing more fallible than human memory. But it adds up to this: if you are called as a witness, behave, be yourself, and be careful! ***
