Congressman Leath Receives Leadership Award

(

Congressman Marvin Leath has been presented the 1984 Leadership Award from the United States Congressional Advisory Board of the Coalition for Peace Through Strength in recognition of the leading role he has taken on a variety of national security issues before the US Congress.

The award was presented to Congressman Leath by Helen Adams, National Vice President, American Legion Auxiliary, at an award reception in Washington. Many of Leath's colleagues and 850 members of the US Congressional Advisory Board from across the country were present at the reception.

(Brother Leath is a member of Lodge No 47, Seaton—Editor).

Sunday, April 8, 1984 was our unable to attend. The outstanding Brother and Sister for 1983 awards were presented during the lodge's 74th anniversary celebration held March 11th.

The "Brother" award was received by Brother Adolph Salac, very much to his surprise. This is the very first at Lodge 84, for a brother to receive the award for a second time. He is very proud and thankful for this recognition.

Brother Salac is the House Committee chairman now and also the past several years, plus a past president and vice president. Congratulations are in order for Brother Salac!

The "Sister" award went to Sister Timpy Ondrusek. She is the substitute youth leader and is very involved with our youth program.

Sister Timpy is the wife of our president, Brother Joseph Ondrusek, so she also gets quite involved with lodge activities. Congratulations to

In this issue of the Vestnik are two letters sent in by Brother Nick Morris which were sent to our Supreme Lodge by officers of other fraternal organizations after attending the NFC (National Fraternal Congress) Public Relations meeting held in Austin in early April.

These letters are the result of hard behind-the-scenes work of District III Director Cyrill (Sid) Pokladnik. Most of you will remember that this year Brother Pokladnik was the President of the TFC (Texas Fraternal Congress) and since TFC and SPJST were hosting the NFC he decided that TFC and SPJST would "put their best foot forward." He enlisted the help of SL Vice President Gebala to accomplish this.

When your editor discussed his plans with Brother Pokladnik earlier this year, he mentioned his thoughts of showing the NFC the Central Texas area, the hospitality of Texans and, especially, the fraternalism of our people.

The trip from Austin to Temple via buses to a Quarter-horse ranch, to our Supreme Lodge Headquarters and, finally, to a "Texas-type meal" and evening at SPJST Lodge "Hvezda Texasu" (Star of Texas) No. 47 at Seaton (commonly known as "Star Hall.")

This editor is certain that the SL personnel and the membership at Lodge 47 definitely showed the NFC group "fraternalism in action."

Nearly every Friday I take various things that have to be handled from the Supreme Lodge to the printing company in Temple to avoid long distance telephone calls and have found the employees at the Home Office very efficient and congenial and I do not have to bother the officers who are generally busy otherwise, and, I might add, they have the answers immediately in most cases and, if not, they answer in a few minutes with the correct information. * **

What is a festival without a parade? Buc Days has TWO. The popular Junior Parade is set for Saturday, April 28th, along Shoreline Drive, from Belden street to the Coliseum. Theme of "Children of the World" is sure to bring out many varieties of costumes. Floats and bands, too.

Young ladies of the city and surrounding areas are now preparing for the Coronation Pageant at the Bayfront Plaza Convention Center on Thursday, May 3rd, at 8:30 p.m.

"The Court of Majestic Cities" is the theme for their gorgeous, extravagant costumes. Spectator seats are $5.00.

The nationally famous Buccaneer Days Illuminated Night Parade will begin with a show at Buc stadium at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 5th. The parade route is down Leopard street to William, to the Bayfront to disband just past the Coliseum.

Dozens of beautiful floats, many bands. A city-wide treat with visitors welcomed.

Come join the fun at whatever events strike your fancy. Admission to most is free — some small charges as noted.

Meanwhile, the carnival next to Memorial Coliseum will open daily, weekdays, 6 p.m., Saturdays, 10 a.m.

From the President's Office National Fraternal Leaders Have High Praise for the SPJST (Dear Bro. Sefcik: The following two letters were recently received and although they are addressed to me, I would like to share them with our membership because they reflect not only on the leadership here but on the members and leadership in the various lodges concerned.

Needless to say, we were highly flattered at all the comments made by these various leaders of other fraternal Societies, including that of Mrs. Jean Farmer who is currently serving as president of the National Fraternal Congress for 1983-84. Some of us had met these individuals at other previous national meetings and feel very close to them. Their remarks attest to the favorable reputation that our Home Office leadership (Supreme Lodge) and our Society in general enjoy on the national level.

May 13th Meeting Set For Lodge 4

The annual meeting of the Press & Public Relations and Fraternal Sections was a great success and much of the credit must be given to the gracious hospitality that you and your colleagues extended to all of us.

The day we spent with you visiting your lodges and Home Office was most impressive.

You folks at SPJST can be very proud of the fraternal work that you are doing and for the tremendous progress the organization has made under your leadership. On behalf of all of us at National Mutual Benefit, I want you to know that we appreciate what you have done to bring credit to the fraternal benefit system.

We missed you at the mid-year meeting of the Presidents' Section in Florida. Sorry you could not attend. It was a good meeting.

Dear Members: Our lodge met Sunday, April 8, 1984 in the Grant Bldg. at Hallettsville with local lodge President Frank Zabransky presiding over the meeting.

Gary and Chris Chudej led the members in the pledge to the flag Gaye Galetka of the Resolution Committee read a resolution of sympathy for our departed Sister Agnes Woytek.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes to the last meeting.

Treasurer Helen Zabransky gave her report and Co-Youth Leader Gaynell Chudej reported on the youth club activities.

A report was given on the District VI meeting that was held in East Bernard in March. From our lodge, Frank Zabransky was elected District VI president, Erwin Holy was reelected to serve as S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes director, and Youth Club Member Chris Chudej was elected flagbearer.

It was announced that April, May and June birthdays will be honored at the May meeting.

Financial Secretary Homer Galetka gave his report followed by the refund checks and then adjournment of the meeting. The afternoon was spent visiting and playing games. Refreshments and lunch were served.

A jelly, bean guessing game by the youth club was won by Linda Mikush. The adult door prize was won by Albert Kahanek and the youth door prize went to Tramer Woytek; each received a solid milk chocolate bunny Members are reminded that our next meeting will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 13 at the Grant Bldg; also April, May and June birthdays will be recognized with a birthday cake to be given away. Refreshments and lunch to be served as usual. I hope to see you there!

President Brother Morris Boutwell called our April meeting to order.

Brother Floyd Felfe led the Pledge of Allegiance to the assembly. All officers were present.

Greetings were received from Thelma Hrncir of District VII and where the Convention will be hosted at Corpus Christi in June.

President Brother Morris Boutwell reported on the District II spring meeting held in Holland; he was elected secretary of District II. All committees' reports were given and accepted.

4/VESTN1K—Wednesday, May 2, 1984 Sister Pat Young reported that the youth members were busy planning the May Fete which will be held May 5th beginning at 6 p.m.; supper will be served at 7 p.m.; there will be special entertainment and then a dance at 9 p.m. by the Debonaires providing music.

Brother Leslie Gustafson thanked all the members for the many cards, visits and calls during his recent illness. We were glad to see him back with us.

Sister Pat Young then thanked all for the sympathy cards and calls during the death of her mother.

Sister Jenelle Mogoyne sent a sympathy card to Dale and Linda Mogoyne.

Sister Jenelle Mogoyne gave $89.10 for recycled cans on behalf of Sister Albina Mogoyne.

Door prize was won by Sister Evelyn Mogoyne.

28, East Bernard Meeting Lodge

Dear Members: The May meeting of Lodge Karel Jonas will be held on the 6th. Due to the change to Daylight Savings ' Time, the meeting will start at 2:30 p.m. The agenda will include a final cost report on the District VI meeting, some convention items and the usual items of business.

The "Gathering of the Clan" for the food and conversation will take place after the meeting.

The April meeting, on the 1st, came on the heels of the District VI meeting the 25th of March. All operational reports were aceepted as given. The committee, formed to handle the planning for the District VI meeting, gave its report and, with exception of two major food bills, all bills were paid. An approximate cost was given but the final cost will be reported when all bills are paid. The committee extended its thanks and appreciation to all members who donated pastry and the like to supplement the "kolacky." The committee also extended its thanks and appreciation to the members and nonmembers who worked in the kitchen and also stayed to clean up. At this point, this writer extends his own thanks to the members of the committee for the maximum effort given in the planning, acquiring of needed supplies and coordinating everything to make the meeting and lunch a success. At this point a letter of appreciation from Director Matt Vanek was read. The meeting continued with attention being called to the many changes in the bylaws being brought forward and the Vestniks they were in. There were several motions made and passed to take care of lodge business.

The Bedrich Smetana Lodge No. 39 will hold our May meeting the first Sunday because of a rental on the regular day.

We are thankful that our President Lucille Koehler escaped serious injury in a car wreck this week. She narrowly missed death when another driver pulled in front of her. She is well on her way to recovery.

Dear Vestnik Readers, The monthly meeting of El Campo-Hillje Lodge 40, was called to order at 7:45 April 18, 1984. President James Kulcak started the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and a minute of silent prayer for our departed members.

Youth Leader Vlasta Bartosh told about the success of the skit presented by the youth club at the District VI meeting in East Bernard.

The youth group will be having a graduation party for Lori Hendersen and other graduates at 6:30 May 3rd.

Secretary Laverne Bacak called the roll for the officers. Brother Bill Goerig was absent. The reading of the minutes was approved as read.

Treasurer Leona Macha reported on all accounts and read the list of expenses paid. Finances were as usual, in tip-top shape. A check has been sent to the scholarship fund in memory of Frank Lutringer.

Sister Margie Kulcak reported that the kitchen is still showing a profit, but she needs volunteers to work Monday Night bingo. Also do nations of food, especially Czech pastries, would be a big help to her and greatly welcomed. Anyone interested in helping, please contact Margie or Dora Lee. President Kulcak received a letter from Moostach Joe from Fremont, Nebraska. He will be in our area on tour in 1985; here is a chance for some good Czech and German music.

We mourn the loss of our oldest lady member, Bessie Bacak, since our last meeting. . First Vice President Benny Reck reported on the addition to the building. Treybig Construction will get the contract. Hopefully, by next Monday, representatives from Houston and Victoria will be down to sign papers. The new addition will be of metal construction as the cost is lower.

We were approached about the sale of land to the east of the hall.

The one acre along with the present acreage would be used as a parking area and would have to be cleaned, graveled and have lighting installed.

Smoke eliminators are on order and to be installed by Treybig Construction as soon as possible. That should take care of the terrible smoke problem we are now having.

The meeting then adjourned.

Lodge 133 Holds Regular Meeting A belated HAPPY EASTER to all our sisters and brothers in the SPJST is our wish. In celebrating Easter, the birth of Christ is a privilege that we in AMERICA have, and where so many people in the World do not have this privilege.

San Antonio Lodge 133 held their regular meeting at the hall located at 1505 S. Gevers St. Pres. Matula opened the meeting by leading the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance, also remembering our departed by a moment of silence.

The minutes were read by Secretary Netek and the treasurer's report was read by Sister Viola Mazac; both reports were accepted as read.

Bro. Anthony Tricilek, chairman of the Entertainment Committee, gave a report which was very encouraging.

Social Committee Sister Mary Popp gave the report on the refreshments for the day, stating that there was more than enough for everyone.

Sister Kleprlik gave a report on the wedding anniversaries.

June 10th Meeting For Lodge 189 Dear Members: The quarterly meeting of Lodge 189, Bryan-College Station was held at 3:30 p.m. at the K.C. Hall.

After the reading of the minutes and officers' reports, two committee chairmen were appointed, namely; Dorothy Vytopil —Refreshment Committee and Claudia Novosad — Audit Committee.

Guests present were then introduced to everyone. Those present were Ben Trcalek, David Barron, Jim Kaboviak, John M. Barron, Ms. Iola Wilcox and John T. Junek.

Ben Trcalek presented a 50-year pin to Joe Novosad, Jr. He then spoke to the members about the continued growth of SPJST. A reminder was given about the District I meeting to be held April 29 at Lodge 39.

After our business meeting we had two:local attorneys speak: David Barron and Jim Kaboviak.

Our next quarterly meeting will be held at 3:30 p.m. June 10 at the K.C. Hall.

Bleiblerville's Annual Fish Fry The spring fish fry will be held May 20, 1984 at the SPJST Lodge 33 Hall located on Farm Road 2502 at Bleiblerville. There will be fried fish sold to go from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.; serving will begin at 11:30 a.m. The meal will consist of fish, catsup, bread, chips and slaw, all you want to eat for the price of $4.50 per adult and $2.25 per child. There will also be plenty refreshments and pastries available for your pleasure.

In addition to the day's festivities, a dance will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. with music by The Blue Czechs; admission to the hall will be $2. Dance ticketholders may win 20, 15, 10 or 5 pounds of hamburger meat, prizes will be given away at 4 p.m.; you must be present to win.

We hope to see a great crowd for everyone's enjoyment, eating a delicious meal and listening to some fine music, also come to see the remodeled Bleiblerville SPJST Hall.

Convention Thoughts

Dear Members, I know there are many of us looking forward to attending our convention. I, like many of you, hope so much that this convention, as pre. vious conventions, will further our progress.

To me, President Nick Morris spells progress! His background of higher education, government service here and in Germany, and his teaching experience contributes to his being qualified to be the great leader our society needs. He gets along with his fellow officers, and together they have helped our SPJST grow immensely.

President Morris is a dynamic speaker: when he speaks, people listen for he does not "ramble on" and what he says is worth listening to!

That he can speak both Czech and German fluently is another big asset for our society. He represents us with dignity, and wherever he goes everyone gets a most favorable impression of the SPJST. On one occasion after President Morris had spoken at Lodge 88, a group of members from the Houston Historical Society asked me, "Where did you all find a president like that? — He's superb!" I firmly support President Morris and all the officers of the Supreme Lodge for reelection. With their fine leadership, we will continue to grow.

Of course, I also support Editor Rudy Sefcik, who is doing a great job too, and District Director Louis Hanus, who has proved to be a most dedicated and capable director for all of the lodges in our district.

Officers and members of the Czech Ex-students Association of Texas (OESAT) will hold their annual meeting Saturday, May 19, 1984 at 1 p.m. in the Moravia Parish Hall, Moravia, Texas. All Members of ESAT are urged to attend this meeting which will include nomination and election of officers for the 1984-1985 term and discussion of various programs and activities planned for the current year.

In conjunction with this meeting the Texas Council for Higher Education (Texaska Matice Vy§§fho Vzdelani) will also convene to resolve various problems pertaining to student loans and tax exemption for the organization.

The Czech Ex-Students Association of Texas (CESAT) is a group dedicated to the encouragement of higher education among Texans of Czech ancestry. By focusing on the study of their ancestral language, literature, arts and music, the organization strives to preserve the Czech culture throughout the state.

While most members are present and former students of the Czech language, membership is open to anyone interested in its purposes.

Ladies' Circle No. 92, Fort Worth

The Sunshine Committee reported "Get Well" cards sent to Tillie Gillis and Sadie Garsuch. We were glad to know that they are feeling better and we will be glad when they can attend the meetings, again.

We missed them! A sympathy card was sent to the family of Albina Farek.

Thank You cards were acknowledged from Sadie Garsuch, Dona Hubenak and Lillian Skrasek.

"Happy Brithday" was sung to members with birthdays in March and April. They were Mary Botik, Rose Jaworski, Inez Krivanek, Marie Prill, Josephine Prochaska, Minnie Ruzicka, Catherine Smith, Joyce Tesar and Sadie Garsuch.

Congratulations to John Tesar for his First Place in Mathematics Recognition Award. He is a student of South West High School and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Tesar and the grandson of Frank and Marie Tesar.

Ann Belota, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Belota, was honored with the Ann Brannon Student Recognition Award in Mathematics. She is a member of the National. Honor Society and Latin Club. Ann is a student at Amon Carter Riverside High School. She is the granddaughter of Mrs. and Mrs. Belota.

Florence Greer told us of her trip to Tennessee with her husband and sister-in-law, Flora Koci. In Memphis, they visited the Schlitz-Stroh Brewery and went on a 1-mile tour of the brewery. The hospitality room that could seat 300 people was beautiful. It is located under one roof on 24 acres of land. Six kinds of beer are bottled and capped there, (cans and bottles), some going to Hawaii and Saudi Arabia. Some asked, "Did you get any Samples?"

Answer, "Is New York Big? Yes, three glasses to a person, Hic!" In Memphis, the -tour of Graceland, Elvis Presley's home and his Garden of Meditation was worthwhile. If you get a chance, go to see it.

In Nashville, a visit with Flora's son, Bill, and family was very enjoyable. They have a nice home there. Jimmy and I attended the "Grand Ole Opera". It was very entertaining, but it's always good to be back home, again.

Esta Belle Hubenak reported that the Lodge 92 Easter egg hunt will be Sunday, April 15th, and that there will be a YAD activity July 1st at the Sokol Hall on Boat Club Road. • There were thirty-five members, 5 visitors, and 5 men present at our meeting.

Hostesses for May will be Esta Belle Hubenak, Inez Krivanek, Clara Cohen, Ann Langer, Dona Hubenak and Betty Billingsley.

Our visitor, Mrs. Maria Ramborskova, spoke to us in Czech. She thanked us for being so nice to her and that she had a good time among us. We have to thank Lydia Alholm for bringing her to our meeting.

Even though she was not a relative, Lydia tried to show her a good time here. It it had not been for Lydia, she probably would have gone back to Czechoslovakia without knowing that there are also good people of Czech descent in America.

Dallas Circle Of Czech Women Must have been the beautiful weather, but, whatever the reason, it was wonderful seeing so many sisters at our April 5th meeting.

Lydia Dirkx opened the meeting promptly at 10:30 a.m. with the pledge to our flag and welcomed our guests and the sisters who have not been with us for some time.

Welcome back to our meeting Sisters Mildred Voss, Linda Kartous, Marie Kowal, Millie Bartek, Agnes Janecka and Mildred Chervenka. Guests were: Mrs. Tirk, Lydia and Roy Alholm, Marie Romboskova from Czechoslovakia, George Skotak and Bob Zvolanek.

After the secretary's and treasurer's reports were given, our Membership Chairman Alice Roberts gave this report: Frances Sparks sent a money donation, Evelyn Salac contributed stamps, Evelyn Cechan sent money donation and Millie Noska sent stamps. Alice stated that we have 68 regular paying members, 16 honorary members, 9 resigned, 4 new members and there have been 8 deaths. Since the year 1935 we have lost 72 sisters in death.

Mary Sebestik read correspondence as follows: Note from Millie Noska thanking us for our well wishes. A letter was received from Sokol Athletic Center Board of Director Chairman Robert Podhrasky thanking us for our donation.

Rose Kopecek read a note from Sister Ella Bartos. Ella sent our Circle a money donation. Sisters Frances Konakovsky, Frankie Curry and Martha Malooly sent greetings to all of us.

The new officers were seated and before taking over the business on hand for April, Anne Zvolanek presented a plaque to Lydia Dirkx for her service to our Krouzek as president . . . Lydia thanked all the other officers and committee chairmen for their loyal support and expressed her willingness to give her support to the newly-elected officers.

Anne Zvolanek thanked everyone for electing her president. She then announced her chairmen of various committees as: Hostess-Mary Sebestik, Reporter-Dorothy Reznik, Sunshine-Adel Vlk, Gifts to SickAdel Vlk, and Libbie ElAik for Oak Cliff area. Telephone Committee: Rose Kopecek, Albina Hucek, Lillian Graeser and Agnes Mach. Hattie Grounds will be an alternate.

We can now happily say you will be receiving your birthday cards after all. Sister Bertha Kalich will be the new chairman with Lydia Dirkx assisting her. A special thank you to Sister Mildred Voss for donating birthday cards and postage. Bessie Kalich reported on the membership book printing costs. It was decided that we have books printed.

After a short discussion, it was also decided by majority vote that

we send cards to our confined sisters at Christmas and Easter instead of plants. This will enable us to send everyone in nursing homes and those sisters who are confined by illness in their homes, a greeting. It was reported that many times pot plants are neglected in nursing homes and this would be the best solution to our remembering our dear shut-ins.

Mildred Chervenka gave a report on the Czech Cultural Society. She also reminded everyone of the Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council meeting at the Czech Club, April 12th with hosts KJT No. 111 and KJZT No. 108.

Bessie Reames announced the Polka-Waltz Festival, April 28th and 29th at the Czech Club.

Anne Zvolanek announced the date of the Ennis Polka Festival May 5th and 6th. She had tickets for sale. Houseshoes, made by Mrs. Hbffman, were brought by Anne for sale.

A letter from Adela Lesikar was read by Zdenka Skotak. Adela sent us a money donation.

Please be informed that Sister Anna Belle Bubak is now in the Holiday Hill Nursing Home.

Bertha Podhrasky stressed to the sisters how enjoyable the Czech Films were at the Granada Theater and urged all to make a special effort to attend these movies and show our appreciation to the management of Granada for making the film available to our local Czech people.

Suzanne Novak had a Czech costume for sale, or individual pieces of costume.

Sister Skotak asked if it is still our wish to sing a song or two at our meetings and whether we would like to purchase song books. It was decided to give it a try and see how the singing session goes over with the members.

Thanks to Sister Skotak for, once again, bringing her material samples for us to purchase.

Our books need to be audited and President Zvolanek asked for someone to volunteer to do this.

Helen Vrla read a letter from the Southern District Slet Board of Directors and we all decided to put a half page advertisement in their Souvenir Book.

Bertha Malik recently visited friends in Portland, Oregon and Tacoma, Washington.

My husband, son Jon, and I took off during the Spring break and enjoyed touring Florida (Disney World, Epcot Center, Sea-World, Kennedy Space Center). Visited sights in Mississippi and took our son to see the Army Camp where his father was stationed in Dothan, Alabama. Ran across the college kids at Daytona rushing for the beaches. Finished our trip by stopping off in New Orleans, La. The month our tables were adorned with ceramic bunnies brought by Ann Skrabanek. A tasty lunch was served by the following hostesses: Lillian Spain, Albina Hucek, Libbie Smith, Rose Kopecek, Ann Skrabanek, Josephine Kankrlik and Libby Slovak.

Ennis Sewing Circle The

April 12, 1984 our meeting was called to order by Chairman Sadie Kubin. Thirty members and 2 guests were welcomed by our chairman.

The guests were Elizka Baronova of Moravia, Czechoslovakia and Bobbie Bibble, daughter of one of our members. Ann Zabojnik and Stazie Jurcik were back after not attending in a long time.

Minutes were read with one correction and approved. All thank you correspondence received was acknowledged. A thought for today was read on "How Come Dollar Left" by Ella Zmolek. The secretary suggested if any members find any thoughtful writeups both in Czech and English to bring them to the meeting, it may enlighten the members and add to the meeting.

A treasurer's report was made by Georgia Zabojnik. Our Chairman Sadie Kubin thanked for gifts by members for Clubs Polka Festival table.

Rosie Zazvorka donated two boxes of cards which were get-well and thank you notes. A quilt is scheduled for May 10th for Millie Bartek, our next meeting.

Ann Zvolanek passed out flyers on Czech Cinema held at Granada Theatre in Dallas; some of these films were poorly attended by us descended Czechs. So, I am going for sure, it's the last one! Also when these Czech films come up, folks, let's attend.

Birthdays for April were for Stazie Trojacek, Verlie Lipscomb, Alice Andrews, Rosie Bednar and Helen Oates and none attended, so, if you attend next time birthday wishes are still opened for May meeting.

Two beautiful quilts made by the Sewing Circle are being given away.

One quilt is for The Polka Festival and the other is for Junior Sokol.

Tickets are being sold. Tickets for the Sewing Circle Polka Festival quilt are $1 donation each and the Junior Sokol quilt are 3 tickets for $1 donation; someone will be a lucky winner.

A moment of prayer was made for our deceased Sisters Annie Hejny and Mary R. Laznovsky.

Lodge 84 Dallas Softball Team Report

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Our annual team benefit dance held April 7 at our lodge hall was a tremendous success. I guess our plea for help and support was heard because the response was very good and deeply appreciated by the team.

We would like to thank everyone who attended our dance and everyone who participated in the fund-raising and the food at the dance. We feel that everyone who attended had a great time and the orchestra, the Czech Harvesters,

really did play music to everyone's delight which was a fun dance and our thanks to the orchestra for their fine music.

Our thanks also to everyone who donated gifts for the team's project; to Don Jarma and Don Lennox for their special bar giveaway plus the chocolate cake. We wish to acknowledge the ball players' wives who brought cakes and goodies to the kitchen, all the players who gave gifts and all the others as gift donors. Your generosity will always be cherished by the team of 1984.

Many thanks to the ex-ball players who attended, we missed all of those who didn't attend; we hope you will make a special effort next year. It was good to see Bob Spoon, one of our exes and past team manager, also Raymond Smith, Bill Gaiser, Jody Rejcek, Paul Valenta, Joe Ondrusek, Don Schmidt and Bobby Dryden. I believe I named them all; if I overlooked someone, please forgive me. It was fun to see these guys at our dance. We enjoyed your presence. By having a successful dance means we will be able to finish this season in the black.

Our thanks also to the mother lodge for the use of the hall for our annual dance, it was Number 31 and who knows, we may even try for No. 32 next season. Thanks, again to everyone who helped, gave and attended, we are all very grateful for your help and assistance.

(ALL GAMES ARE PLAYED AT SAMUEL GRAND DIAMOND No. 2) There are a total of nine teams in our league. You, our members and also friends of the team, are invited to our games. I hope you can attend some of them and root for the team, it helps when you have fans rooting for the team, so do come when you can.

We had planned a tournament for the weekend of April 26 through 28 in Denton, Texas and a tournament Saturday, April 14 in Dallas and we are to play a total of 4 games. Lionel Schulz, our pitcher, can really twirl them all because we have only one pitcher this season, but a darn good one.

The results of these games will be given in my next report and also the result of our first league game for April 17 at 6:45 p.m. against Raintree.

Our most sincere thanks to everyone who helped in any way towards the success of our annual dance. May God bless you all for your help.

We played our first league game Tuesday night, April 17 at 6:45 p.m.

I would like to remind all youth members to start planning their

crafts and talent/royalty speeches as soon as possible. If you start now, you will be better prepared when the time comes. Good luck to you at YAD! The cold winter sure did its share of damage to our shrubs, trees and the. St. Augustine grass in our yards and the draught that has been around since last summer sure is not helping either. We need rain for the water supply in our stock tanks and also for our crops and vegetation plus trees, so I hope it's raining while you are reading this letter.

LODGE 6, COTTONWOOD DONATES TO CHARITIES Dear Members and Readers, The youth club of Lodge 6 held their meeting at 2:15 p.m. April 8 with a good attendance. After the mother lodge meeting, the club members had their Easter program and the teenage group presented "The Lord's Prayer"; the junior group performed to the music of Hokey Pokey, also the Abbott High School freshmen girls danced to the music of "Beat It." They all gave an enjoyable presentation.

Afterwards, we had Easter egg hunt for all the children. Prizes were given to the groups in ages 1 to 5: Jim Hromadka— lst, Elaine Stuckly — 2nd, Ryan Straten — 3rd.

In ages 6 to 8 were Robert Lenert1st, William Straten-2nd, Christe Mach-3rd. In group 9 to 12 included Marvin Mynar —1st and 3rd, Keith Hykel-2nd. I wish to thank all the helpers who assisted with the egg hunt, also all the members and friends who donated eggs for the egg hunt.

The clubbers sold tickets on a roaster and for a bunny rabbit plus other nice gifts that were donated to the club. Many thanks to all of you for also helping sell tickets.

A delicious supper was served at 5 p.m. with barbecue beef being furnished by Lodge 6 and everyone else brought covered dishes and pastries.

Our club members had planned to bring Easter gifts to the West Rest Haven, April 18th. They had planned a bake sale April 20 at the Leroy Bank.

April 6 they colored boiled eggs and April 13 they painted plastic items. An enjoyable time was had during both activities.

April 27th, we had many youth club members to participate in the rehearsal for our program at the Dist. III meeting on April 29th.

DALLAS TEEN CLUB The Teen Club of Lodge 84 has also been active. Besides attending their regular monthly meeting, they have gone to special activities.

January 29 they went bowling at Don Carter's East; fun was had by all.

February 12 Mrs. Petr and I drove nine teens to the Omni Theater to see "The Great Barrier Reef." We were treated to a Mexican dinner at Casa Bonita afterwards.

In March, at the lodge's 74th anniversary, Vicki Gerlich gave a very nice speech about the SPJST's history and our lodge's history. She also served as the mistress of ceremonies for the youth part of the program. "Thank you, Vicki."

April 21, the teens participated. with the juniors in games and fun at the Easter Party.

May 6 is Field Day at Flag Pole Hill, it will start at 2 p.m.; see you there.

AT LODGE 6, COTTONWOOD

The youth club held their monthly Dear Readers, We had 15 members and 4 visitors meeting Sunday, April. 8, 1984 at 2:15 p.m. at our April meeting.

Correspondence was read from April 6th, we held a fund-raising dance with Sterling Country. We Pat Waschmann.

The club donated to the Easter sold 105 tickets; so, we will have to have a few more fund raisers to go Seal, CYO paper drive and to West Fraternal anniversary.. They also to Six Flags.

NEWS FROM LODGE 24, CYCLONE YOUTH CLUB Dear Readers, The monthly meeting of Lodge 24 was held April 11, 1984 at 7:30 p.m.

There were 25 members, 5 adults and 4 visitors present.

Before our meeting we had an Easter hunt for the smaller kids.

They had a very fun time hunting the eggs. Afterwards everyone had refreshments.

After the meeting was called to order, roll was called.

We were still thinking about our summer outing. We still are undecided.

We also discussed about having a fish pond and a ring-a-coke at the mother lodge's picnic, which was planned for April 29th. Our youth leader will let us know more later on.

LODGE 30 TO ELECT YOUTH CLUB OFFICERS Dear Vestnik Readers, The SPJST Youth Club in Taiton held their monthly meeting at 2:30 p.m. April 1st at the home of Mrs. Jerome Dorotik.

The meeting was called to order

by President Vicki Dorotik. Amy Kresta led the Pledge of Allegiance, and the prayer was led by Linda Treumer.

We discussed the District VI meeting which was held March 25th in East Bernard. We thanked the members who donated to the booth and participated in the program.

In May, we will have the election of officers. The Election Committee is Amy Kresta and Marcy Dorotik.

For the contest, everyone was asked to decorate an Easter egg.

Winners in the various age groups were (6-9) 1st— Craig Dorotik, 2nd —

We then held an Easter egg hunt which followed the meeting. Prize eggs were found by Curtis Dorotik and Crystal Roye. These winners were each given a ceramic bunny.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee in behalf of all the members of Lodge No. 155, Austin, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed brother

T'ODON CHARLES LESHIKAR, age 69, who died February 18, 1984 in Dallas. He was a member of our lodge for 31 years and a retired bursar of the University of Texas Accounting Office 42 years.

Survivors are his wife, Angel

Services were conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, February 23 at the Czech-Moravian Brethren Church in Vsetin.

The body remained at Kubena Funeral Home until 8:45 a.m. Thursday, when it was taken to the church for services at which the Rev. Henry Beseda officiated. Burial was in Bila Hora Cemetery.

Born 17 October 1885 in Czechoslovakia to Henry and Annie Tulcek, she was a member of the CzechMoravian Brethren Church and the SPJST Society.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Lois Sevcik and Mrs. Hermina Balusek of Hallettsville; a son, Albin Kovarek of Port Lavaca; eight grandchildren, 25 greatgrandchildren and 8 great-greatgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John in January 1957; two brothers, two sisters, a grandchild and a greatgrandchild.

Carrie was born January 5, 1893 to parents, John and Veronica (Barnbuck) Kopecky in Fayette County community named Roznov, near La Grange, Texas. She was a housewife and a good neighbor.

Brother Cosgrove was born January 2, 1906 in Crawford, Texas, the son of Francis J. and Sarah White Cosgrove. He was reared in Crawford and graduated from Crawford High School.

In 1925 he moved to Ennis and worked for Schoep's Grocery Store.

He later became manager of A&P Grocery Store. He was married to Mrs. Johnie Long on May 5, 1940.

After their marriage, they lived in Ennis.

In 1942 he entered the US Army and served in the Pacific Theater of War. He was discharged in 1945.

After his discharge from the service, he returned to Ennis and was employed by Ennis State Bank. He retired as vice-president in 1977.

September 19, 1976, he was married to Mrs. Callie Sue Bower of Jefferson. After their marriage, they lived in Ennis. Mrs. Cosgrove died October 25, 1980.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Lakeside Country Club, the Methodist Men's Sunday School Class and a member of SPJST Lodge 25.

He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Letha Crouch of Crawford; two nieces, Mrs. Gene Bennett of Duncanville and Mrs. Martha Louise Garrett of Galveston; and three nephews, Bill Crouch of Fort Worth, Joe Street of Dallas and Robert Street of Texarkana. 째 May our departed brother rest in eternal peace.

Sister Kaiser was born in Austria August 10, 1888, the daughter of the late Vaclav Ba,klik and Frances Hejtmancik I3aklik. Sister Kaiser came to the United States with her parents in 1892. She grew up, and lived most of her life in Dime Box. In January of 1906, she was married to Gus George Kaiser who preceded her in death in 1948.

Sister Kaiser had been a resident of the Leisure Lodge Nursing Center in Caldwell since 1973. She was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dime Box, an honorary member of the KJZT, and SPJSTthe last Charter Member of the SPJST Lodge No. 13. The bride graduated magna cum laude from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science degree in wildlife science. She is the manager at Whole Earth Provisions Company in Bryan.

A Texas A&M major in Architectual Design, the groom is employed at Riley Engineering, also in Bryan.

The groom's parents hosted the wedding party with a dinner at the Captain's Table near Belton.

San Antonio Czech Choral Club Sings At Fort Bend Festival The Czech singers from San Antonio will be performing at the Fort Bend County Czech Fest May 5th at the Praha Hall at 2:15 p.m.

The group has been enthused about going to Rosenberg. This is one of the few places that this group hasn't performed before. We are all looking forward to singing there and seeing many of our friends there from Houston and other areas.

The group will be performing at two golden weddings in the month of June, and also at the Folklore Festival in San Antonio, August 4th.

Our group has their singing practice at the Polish-American Center every third Friday of the month.

Leo Netek's first wife, Mary Kranavek Netek (mother of his 10 child-

ren), died at the age of 39 after giving birth to Christine 20 December 1926. Mr. Netek was left with 10 children, the oldest being 29 years old.

In 1929 he remarried and married Anna Svatek Netek from Shiner, Texas. They had two children, Frances and Emil.

Leo Netek came to America in 1903 and settled in the Corn Hill area, worked at the country store and also farmed there.

In 1906 he married and, in 1914, he moved his family to Corpus Christi, where he farmed throughout his life.

He was 19 years old when he left his hometown, Svebohov, Czechoslovakia (in northern Moravia). He returned to Czechoslovakia for a visit when he was 84 years old. His relatives from Czechoslovakia correspond with the families in America.

A common error made by many Czechs in this area is that when they use the formal Vy, VAL Vam, they use a PLURAL verb, although they are addressing only one person. WRONG: Vy, (1 person) jste veera jeli do mesta.

RIGHT. Vy jste jel do mesta. DO NOT USE A PLURAL VERB UNLESS YOU ARE SPEAKING TO MORE THAN ONE PERSON. The pronoun ja is not capitalized; neither do we capitalize adjectives and adverbs indicating nationality.

One big difference in English and Czech punctuation has to do with the use of commas.

Commas are used before and after a relative clause: Ztratil jsem knihu, kterou mi dal.

—before and after a noun clause: Je dobfe, 2e tomu rozumg.

— before and after an adjective clause; V§echen cukr, vkchna kava.

— before and after an adverbial clause: Jakmile me uvidel, sel prye.

Finally, quotation marks are always preceded by a colon. Ex.: Otec fekl synovi: "Pokraeuj a lie se!" (In Czech, the first quotation marks are on the line, not inverted, and ARE inverted at the end of the quotation. Our machines here do not print the double inverted quotation marks. The trend here in the U.S. is to use the standard English quotation marks —" ".
