Keeping our XXIV Convention in mind, districts, lodges and members are reminded to send your bylaw change recommendation(s) to the Bylaw Committee Secretary Brother Donnie Victorick. His address is on page 2, column 2. Remember, too, that time is fleeting! *** Why do we have conventions? Do we have conventions for banquets, get-togethers, entertainment, etc.?

No, those are only the by-products.

The real value in a convention is the exchange of ideas, to take stock of our progress and to make plans for the future. Periodically conventions draw many delegates together, to attend these American phenomena called "conventions." We say, American phenomena, advisedly because we are told on good authority that nowhere else in the worldin no other country-does the institution or custom, call it what you wish, of the deliberately arranged convocation of delegates exist to any extent worth mentioning. There are certainly none where it is not only customary but one of the objectives of the convention to exchange the fruits of their experience, to discuss their problems and the solutions thereto and in general to make our SPJST Society more valuable to our members.

We no longer wonder what it is that brings delegates to conventions. We have attended enough of them to know they represent one of the best and most admirable demonstrations of this country's dynamic energy and its creative drive toward progress and growth. They illustrate, as nothing else does, the spirit of give and take, and learn and teach, that they have replaced in this country the old world policies of secrecy and the law of the jungle, so to speak. Let us bear this in mind at all times and let us employ to the utmost the advantages and the opportunities that these conventions give us to meet and exchange ideas with those of our fraternal work who, after all, are here also to help and to be helped. *** Remember to read very carefully and review the SPJST Bylaw recommendations, SL Officers/Directors' reports, plus all acting committees' reports (these are very important to our Society), in last week's issue because these changes and/or recommendations will be discussed and acted upon as well as voted on "for" or "against" by your lodge's delegate(s). April 29th was designated in our SPJST for four important events, namely: District I meeting at Lodge 39 (near Bryan) on Highway 21; District III meeting which will be hosted by Lodge 6, Cottonwood (near West); and District IV meeting at the senior Citizens Center in Seymour; Lodge 73 will act as host lodge.

Another activity will be the Czech presentation entitled "Nevesty na prodej" (Brides for Sale) at Lodge 88 in Houston. We hope so, because the actors will be delighted with your presence.) *** Oftentimes we wonder what could we build for a better future. "Human nature", so to speak, is well-known to be responsible for deplorable state affairs, the assumption being that "human nature" is in some way a force which cannot possibly be controlled or improved. It is high time this comfortable pretext was exploded. Men should aspire to be the masters of their fate, rather than the victims of their own "nature." If we presume, as we do, to change and improve everything else in nature, why do we leave ourselves out of the process? Improvement and progress should surely begin at home.

If, then, we discard the facile notion that "human nature" is to blame and that nothing can be done about it, what is the real reason for our inability to shape our affairs as reason and self-interest tell us that they should be shaped? How does it come about that greed, prejudice, envy, fear, misunderstanding and all the other less desirable human characteristics play such a large part in the affairs of the world, so that the common denominator of everyday life is fear and lack of mutual confidence? It is perhaps because we think more of our differences than our opportunities? We are still in a state of mind where the traditional attitudes born of our past wants and conflicts influence us more than the abundant, and so far largely unexploited, opportunities of the hopeful present. This means applying the cash value to purchase the original amount of protection for a specific period of time, as stated in the policy.

At retirement. Here's where someone who owns only term is in for a rude awakening. Not only have the premiums increased far beyond what he'd be paying for the same amount of permanent insurance by now, but he may run out of coverage entirely before long. Term, as we said before, is usually not sold to people over age 60 or 65.

According to insurance industry studies, in fact, very few term policies are ever paid off as death claims. This means that term owners either switch over to permanent plans or else they lose or drop their coverage and remain uninsured.

They outlive their insurance and have nothing to show for it.

With permanent insurance, the protection can remain in force on a premium paying basis during retirement (indeed, some permanent plans become paid up at age 65 or so and the coverage stays in force without another dime in premiums being paid by the insured). Or, one of the choices mentioned above — Surrender for cash or an income for life, Reduced paid-up insurance or Extended term Insurance—may be elected.

The point is, the insured can do whatever makes sense at the time, and this is flexibility which only permanent life insurance can offer.

When Should You Buy Term?

Believe it or not, insurance companies and fraternal societies don't dislike term insurance. After all, virtually all of them offer term and sell rather a lot of it. But they would prefer people to use it as it was designed; namely, for temporary needs or in situations where permanent coverage is called for, but the insured can't afford the premiums.

Let's look at examples of both.

Temporary needs. The classic use of term insurance is to provide short term protection (that's why most term policies are available in 1, 5, 10 or 20 year increments). Certain business insurance needs and loans, including home mortgages, are typical situations where term insurance is widely used. For instance, the decreasing term policy, in which the face amount of insurance is reduced every year to the end of the term, is probably the best and most popular way to provide low-cost mortgage life insurance. Many people also buy term insurance to cover the amount of policy loans made against their permanent life insurance, an ideal way to make sure the death benefit is not reduced by the outstanding loan balance.

Temporary solutions to permanent needs. Young families often use term insurance to provide the kind of protection they need but can't yet afford. The sensible approach, however, is not to rely totally on term. Instead, a base amount of permanent insurance—as much as can be reasonably afforded—should be purchased. The rest of the job can then be done with renewable and convertible term insurance (generally with at least 5 or 10-year renewal dates).

with one or more children and the usual financial responsibilities for example, may easily need $100,000 of life insurance — and might need it for years and years to come. At first, $25,000 of permanent protection may be all their budget can handle.

The remaining $75,000 can be covered with relatively inexpensive 5-year renewable and convertible term insurance.

The conversion feature is important because it guarantees that the term portion can be changed over to a permanent plan at any time, without evidence of insurability. In view of the rising cost of term coverage over the years —and the fact that most people need to provide for some additional retirement income — it's a good bet that all or part of that term insurance should eventually be converted to permanent, cash value protection. That's all part of smart life insurance planning.

When Should You Buy Term and Invest the Difference?

The notion of buying term instead of permanent insurance and then investing the difference between the two premiums has been around for a long while. The idea is to earn more money through one's own investments than the insurance company or fraternal benefit society pays on cash value accumulations in permanent life insurance. The term policy is used to provide the needed insurance protection.

Several things tend to make hash of this approach (which may account for the fact that, although a lot of people talk about doing this, not many successful practicioners of the theory are to be found). Chief among the drawbacks are these: 1) Doing really well with investments in the long run takes a level of financial know-how that a lot of us simply don't have. Even people who know what they're doing can make costly investment mistakes.

2) Cash value accumulation in life insurance is income tax free. This means that whatever side investments are made have to do better— after taxes—than the guaranteed rate paid by the insurer. For instance, someone in the 50% income tax bracket would have to earn 10% on his investment in order to realize a 5% after-tax gain.

3) Assuming annual investments are made comparable to the difference between the term and permanent insurance premiums, the amount of money available to invest each year will be relatively small.

This limits the range of investment possibilities to those offerings with low front end commitments. This type of plan, typically, provides modest yields.

But maybe what's most wrong about the buy term and invest the difference idea is human nature.

Investment plans, like savings accounts, tend to be put-and-take propositions (how many savings accounts have you opened and closed over the years?). Publication Committee Meetings Minutes

Wednesday, April 25, 1984—VESTNiK/5 that the Supreme Lodge members could act on the research of the bylaws in the Supreme October meeting. Passed.

The committee then discussed whether they should meet in the future and all six members present agreed that the committee should meet in the spring of 1983 whether we receive per diem or not. The committee tentatively set a date for the third Saturday in March, 1983.

There was no further business and the committee adjourned their meeting at 1:30 p.m.

Committee Meetings Minutes March 26, 1983 Chairman Angeline Kristinik called the meeting to order at 10:10 a.m. in Temple, Texas in the Supreme Lodge headquarters. All members of the committee were present. Also attending the meeting were Supreme Lodge Secretary, Leonard Mikeska, Legal Advisor, Sidney Kacir and Editor Rudy Sefcik.

The secretary read the minutes of the September 25, 1982 meeting.

Emil Matula moved, seconded by Tommy Lostak that the minutes be accepted as read. Passed.

Legal Advisor Sidney Kacir was present and he discussed the letter that was written by Emil Matula to the Supreme Lodge. Brother Kacir explained that the conflict in the bylaws is an "in house" matter and it is not a legal matter. The proper procedure for the Publication Committee is to submit a change to the by-laws committee and also to submit a request for remuneration to the Finance Committee. Both of these changes are to be acted on by the 1984 Convention.

Sophie Dybala reported that a member in her district suggested that the Vestnik be printed only once a month.

Emil Matula brought a proposed change to Article 104 to the by-laws.

He suggested that Article 104 c be added to Article 104. "The Publication Committee should hold an annual meeting, and a special meeting in exceptional cases when problems cannot be settled by correspondence. The committee is paid according to the pay set for regular committee meetings by the committee on salary and donations." Emil Matula moved, seconded by Albert Banik and Sophie Dybala that the proposed change be presented to the By-Laws Committee. Passed unanimously.

Emil Matula suggested that the contents of the proposed Article 104 c be submitted to the Finance Committee for compensation to the Publication Committee for the meetings held in September 1982, March 1983, September 1983 and the spring meeting 1984. Tommy Lostak moved, seconded by Ruby Bolton that the above be presented to the Finance Committee. Passed.

The committee then discussed a letter from Frances Olexa concerning two letters that she submitted to the Vestnik. Both letters were printed by the editor.

Editor Rudy Sefcik was present and stated that he has no problems.

The Publication Committee set the date for the next meeting for September 24, 1983 at 10 a.m. in the Supreme building in Temple.

There was no further business and Emil Matula moved that the meeting be adjourned.

Committee Meetings Minutes March 3, 1984 Chairman Angeline Kristinik calla the meeting to order at 10:05 a.m. in Temple, Texas in the Supreme Lodge headquarters. All members of the committee were present. Also attending the meeting were VicePresident Bernie Gebala, Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas, Legal Advisor Sidney Kacir and Editor Rudy Sefcik.

Jerry Mikulas, financial secretary, reported that he is in the process of preparing a survey to be mailed out to all the subscribers to the VESTNIK. Each member will receive the survey in about thirty days and then each member will have thirty days to return a card stating whether they are interested in continuing to receive the VESTNIK. Brother Mikulas also stated that the relationship between Editor Sefcik, the publisher and the membership of the Supreme Lodge is excellent.

Bernie Gebala and Sidney Kacir discussed with the committee the events leading to the disagreement between the Publication Committee and the Supreme Lodge concerning their authority to meet and receive per diem. It was decided that an addition to the by-laws would be submitted concerning the authority for the Publication Committee to meet and also a request is to be forwarded to the Finance Committee for the Publication Committee to be paid for the meetings for which they were not paid.

Editor Sefcik talked to the committee about the excellent relationship between the editor and the publisher. The editor also discussed advertising rates and how they effect income as "unrelated business".

Emil Matula moved, seconded by Albert Banik that the editor not take any outside ads. After the motion was discussed, the motion was withdrawn. Emil Matula moved, seconded by Albert Banik that political ads be accepted from members only, and that the income from unrelated business not exceed $1,000.00 Passed unanimously.

The committee discussed the convention issue of the VESTNIK. Emil Matula moved, seconded by Ruby Bolton that the convention issue be left up to the discretion of the editor and the printer as to size and color.

Passed unanimously.

The secretary read the minutes from the March 16, 1983 meeting and they were approved as read.

The chairman reported that the Publication Committee meeting scheduled for September 24, 1983 was not held since there was no business to be attended to.

Uncorrected

Elaine Berkovsky and approved after the correction of a lodge number. This was followed by the reading of 50-year members.

In the treasurer's report given by Anton Kellner, Jr., there was a balance of $334.85 October 1st, 1983 in the Youth Fund. The expenses amounted to $329.00, leaving a balance of $5.85 the first of March.

In the General Expense Fund there was a balance on the 1st of October of $570.54. The expenses were $195.00 leaving a balance March 1 of $375.54. Treasurer Kellner concluded by stating the district king and queen were not paid this past year because of lack of funds in the Youth Fund.

Leona Macha stated that some money should be paid to them from the General Expenses Fund. When asked if we would be allowed to do this, Frank Zabransky made a motion that $25.00 each should be paid from this year's youth fund.

Ardis Bacak seconded and the motion passed.

Youth Counselor Janet Marek arrived from the Leadership Conference at Camp Lone Star and gave her report. She listed the upcoming activities: district leaders' meeting at WCEC May 5th, district camp at Bastrop June 28th, district leaders and older youth at Camp Lone Star June 1st, District YAD at Victoria July 15th, and State YAD at Temple August 12th. She presented the youth program.

Victoria performed to Sneaky Snake, Taiton presented the Art Linkletter Show skit and Lenise Kasper tap-dancing, and El CampoHillje did the chicken dance with the help of some friends from the audience.

Rest Home Director Ervin Holy stated the rest homes were full with a waiting list. Studies had been made and it had been concluded that fraternal or church resthomes give better care. Director Holy said he was going to Needville Tuesday to open bids for a new laundry. He concluded by saying the directors would not ask for anything' new from the convention unless a new vehicle would be needed.

March 25, 1984 The spring meeting of District VI SPJST was held at the American Legion Hall in East Bernard March 25, 1984 with Lodge 28-East Bernard as hosts.

The meeting was called to order at 1:00 p.m. by President Linda Rubesch.

Flagbearer Jason Motal led the pledge to the flag. There was a moment of silence in respect to our deceased members.

Welcomes were extended by District VI Vice President Frank Zabransky and Lodge 28 President Joe Nezval. Ardis Bacak, District VI 2nd vice president, responded.

All district officers answered the roll call with the exception of Youth Counselor Janet Marek who arrived late after a training class. All standing committee members responded to the roll call except Publication Committee member, Sophie Dybala.

Twelve lodges answered to the roll call of lodges.

Minutes from the fall meeting were read by District VI Secretary

Insurance Committee member Jerome Hlavaty stated that two meetings had been held. A discussion had been held at the meetings to eliminate the insurance section from the bylaws so that items don't have to wait for decisions by referendum. He concluded by asking that lodge members help their sales representatives secure insurance. He stated that Supreme Lodge Vice President Gebala would be seeking re-election.

Brother Hlavaty said he would serve on the Insurance Committee if elected.

Bylaw Committee member Leona Macha stated that three meetings had been held in Temple. The April 18th issue of the Vestnik would contain the recommended changes to the Bylaws from the committee. She also would remain on the Bylaw Committee if chosen.

Rita Vanek from the Finance Committee stated that the per diem and recommendations from that committee would be listed in the April 18th issue of the Vestnik. They have recommended that more money be put in the General Expense Fund. She concluded by saying she would also be willing to

The committee discussed printing the names of all seven committee members of all standing committees in the VESTNIK on page two.

Tommy Lostak moved, seconded by Albert Banik that the editor list all seven committee members of all standing committees in the VESTNIK immediately. Passed unanimously.

by Ruby Bolton that the Publication Committee support the recommendation to Article 103c at the convention as submitted by Lodge 130.

The Publication Committee discussed a proposed name change for the official Organ as presented in the By-Laws change to Article 101 as recently printed in the VESTNIK. Ruby Bolton moved, seconded by Tommy Lostak that the name of our Organ remain VESTNIK. Passed unanimously.

The Publication Committee discussed whether the VESTNIK should be printed on a better grade of paper and put together with staples, but the committee feels that the higher cost of printing would be prohibitive to change.

There was no further business.

Minutes Of District VI Spring Meeting

6/VESTNIK—Wednesday, April 25, 1984 continue to serve on the Finance Committee.

There was no report from the Publication Committee or District Auditing Committee.

Director Matt Vanek brought greetings from the Home Office. He stressed to the members the importance of returning the Vestnik card if they wished to continue receiving it. There are now 11,521 Vestnik subscriptions costing $767 per week for postage and $1506 for publication. Loans were being made for 11 1/2% interest to members of at least one year. The Scholarship Fund is in effect with $25,000. A new actuary, from Dallas had been hired.

An annuity plan has been put in effect and the new actuary was working on a new insurance policy; 8% refunds had been given out for a total of $174,230.

Director Vanek then presented checks to District VI Treasurer Kellner. There were 5,887 certificates at $.25 each to make $1,471.75 for the Youth Fund. The General Expense Fund check amounted to $400.00.

Director Vanek said the top thirty sales representatives in the state would be honored at the convention in Corpus Christi, June 17-20. Sales classes had been held in Hallettsville and El Campo.

So far in January and February $254,000 in insurance had been sold in District VI. Jerome Hlavaty, Eddie Vrana, Matt Vanek, Frankie Vanek and Clark Purley had received training for the new annuity program. Statewide in 1983, $21 million worth of insurance was sold with 2460 applicants. Currently there are 56,000 certificates in force for $167 million in insurance. Director Vanek handed out checks to the sales representatives.

He concluded his report by introducing State Field Manager Silas Smith and his wife Jeanette.

Director Vanek added he was running for re-election as district director at the state convention.

Silas Smith, state field manager, spoke a few words to the group. He praised the youth and said it was good for them to perform in front of people. He asked for help in Lodge 8 — Weimar where there was no sales representative. He stated that the sales representatives are responsible for the 8% refunds and for the number of delegates at the convention. No matter how good lodge officers are, the members are the most important. He concluded by saying that if you believe in the SPJST, all you have to do is tell people about it.

There was no old business.

Under new business, there was the report from the nominating committee made up of Leona Macha, William Berkovsky and Eddie Vrana. The slate of officers they gave is as follows: President —Frank Zabransky, 1st Vice President—Ardis Bacak, 2nd Vice President— Albert Olsovsky, Secretary — Elaine Berkovsky; Treasurer — Anton Kellner Jr, Flag Bearer Chris Chudej, Rest Home Director — Ervin Holy and Youth Counselor -- Janet Marek.

Frankie Vanek made a motion to accept this slate with Brother Dusek seconding. The motion passed.

Rita Vanek asked that all lodges send in hardship cases to the Finance Committee before May 10th; none would be accepted at the convention.

The fall meeting of District VI will be held in Taiton. Mary Mrnustik said the date would be set at a later time.

Ervin Holy asked about the possibility of having a central location as the site of each district meeting with the different lodges acting as hosts.

Matt Vanek asked for a committee to study this idea. President Rubesch appointed Ervin Holy to this committee.

Director Matt Vanek installed all the new officers.

Dorothy Hahn (Lodge 148) moved for adjournment with a second from Ardis Bacak. Motion passed and the meeting adjourned.

Snook Lodge No. 9 met for their Tammy Mynar and Stacie Mynar monthly meeting April 4, 1984 at led the membership in the Pledge of 7:30 p.m. The meeting was called to Allegiance. Tammy then led the order by President Richard Vajdak.

We had two members on the sick list; Mary Krause, who had been in the hospital (hope you are feeling better now) and Jo Lee Vaculin who had surgery, but is at home now and doing real fine.

Now, the important part — our club will have a Cleanup Day Saturday, April 28, so please all members come out and help, starting at 8 a.m.; dinner will be furnished by the club. We could use your help.

We are getting ready for a big reception for our 50-year members and their families. The 50-year members are, J. D. Ruzicka, Ann Stickney, Alice Frits, Standy Svetlik and Sidonia Stoebner. The reception will be May 20 at 3 p.m. Then after the reception we will have a free appreciation dance starting at 4 p.m. The dance is free and all members and the public are invited, so please come and join us for a good time because we would like to see you all.

Since no one had a birthday, the meeting was adjourned and we all enjoyed a delicious supper of sauerkraut and sausage prepared by Dan and Ann Balusek; it sure was good and thank you both!

6th Meeting For Lodge 35, Elk May

Reported on the sick list were Emilie Ondrasek, Leah Marek, Anna Chupik (she was able to be at our meeting) and Joe Mikulas. We wish everyne a speedy recovery and may everyone be blessed with good health real soon.

The members were, again, reminded about the hardship cases.

Letters must be sent to Jerry Pechal on or before May 1; these have to be signed by our president and secretary and in the hands of the Finance Committee by May 10th. I have a short letter in this issue that may better explain the requirements, as well as president Pechal's address.

Vallie Zavodny read the board minutes. The next board meeting was set April 17 at 7 p.m.

Frankie Klinkovsky gave a brief report on the District II meeting.

Rosie Craft gave her youth club report. She had 11 members and 20 guests present. This meeting was followed by an Easter egg hunt for all the youth.

Birthdays celebrated in April are: Vallie Chlapek, Bennie Mikeska, Anna Shenkir, Judy Sirney, Anton Vitek and Helen Wiley. Happy birthday to all!

Lodge 74, Lovelady Makes Charitable Donations The monthly lodge meeting was held at 7:30 p.m. April 9, 1984. President Wilcox opened the meeting.

All officers and trustees were present with the exception of Youth Leader Linda Michka who was sick.

We all hope she will be feeling better soon.

All reports were read and approved.

In new business, the members voted to donate $25 to the Crime Stoppers of Houston County.

Lodge 74 made a donation to the Scholarship Fund in memory of J. D. Ivins. Our sympathy is extended to the Ivins' family in the loss of their father and husband, J. D. Ivins.

As usual this time of the year Chester Shmoldas is working hard keeping the flowers and grounds pretty at Lodge 74. The roses look like they will be in full bloom before long.

To all the fishermen, if you like a good fish story, Bill McInnis has a good one to tell; his wife, Mary McInnis verifies it and says so, so it must be true. When you see Bill, be sure and ask him to tell you his fish story.

Our next monthly meeting will be May 14; mark your calendar, and come to the meeting.

81 Honors 50-Year Members Lodge

Lodge Needville met April 15 for its regular monthly meeting, beginning with a noon meal.

Special guests present were our 50-year members and their spouses.

Everyone enjoyed delicious turkey and dressing, ham, and many various covered dishes and desserts. Thanks to Benita Walzel and Winnefred Susan for baking the turkey and dressing and Mary Werner for baking the ham. A delightful hour was spent visiting and reminiscing with our 50-year members.

President Charlie Matcek called the meeting to order promptly at 2 p.m.

Sister Lydia Faler led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag and we remained standing for a few moments of silence as a tribute to our deceased Sister Caroline Uherek. Sister Uherek was a resident at our S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home and had been in ill health for some time. May she rest in peace.

There were eleven eligible candidates for 50-year membership pins. Those present were Victor Werner of Rosenberg, Albin Kovarik of Port Lavaca, Alvin Palat of Freeport, Helen Teykl of Needville and Elsie Sikora of Hungerford.

Each candidate was seated at the front as his or her name was called and was_presented a 50-year pin by President Charlie Matcek and a corsage by Benita Walzel. Brother Willie Vitek accepted the 50-year pin for his wife, Lillian, who was too ill to be present. Thanks to Brother Faler who took pictures of all the activities.

Another welcome and surprise guest was Thelma Hrncir from District VII. Thelma is very active in her role with the "Child Abuse Program". She presented a short but informative talk concerning this subject and about her work with the SPJST in other activities in the past. Her speech was one of the highlights of the afternoon. She was accompanied by her husband, Eugene, and daughter, Angie.

Martha Durham was our guide for the day, standing in for her father, Richard Hubenak; he is recuperating after a week's stay in the St. Joseph Hospital with the flu. Secretary Christine Zich's father, John Slovak, of Dallas was in All Saint's Hospital and will be staying for a while with Christine and family.

Other members recently hospitalized are Tillie Gillis, Lula Ostraka and Liz Howard, but Liz looked hale and happy again at the meeting. Joe and Nancy Paprskar from Dallas were present after missing two meetings, also because of the flu, but Nancy had a bit of good news; she is now grandmother of a new baby grandson, Joe Westly Scott, III, the first grandson on either side of the family after a half dozen or so of granddaughters.

Lillie Matusevitch has gone to San Antonio after her illness to spend some time with her daughter, Helen Oujesky and family. Norma and Bill McClendon are on a trip to Hawaii; it's business for Bill, but pleasure for Norma.

Financial Secretary Evelyn Spacek gave out premium refund checks to grateful recipients and we learned that fourteen birthday cards were sent to members over sixtyfive years of age. "Happy Birthday" was sung to April birthday people present; Sherry Watkins, Martha Durham, Johnny Murphy, Joyce Tesar, Lydia Alholm, Ailene Kercho (in absentia) and, last but not least, little Joseph Tesar who was oneyear-old.

At three thirty-five Al Svacek made a motion to adjourn and all were in agreement, partly due to the aroma of brisket and all the trimmings wafting from the kitchen where Mary and Joyce Tesar had been noiselessly working all afternoon.

Our President Mary Ann Kieschnick called our monthly meeting to order at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 8, 1984.

We had 34 members present who stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag; all members also remained standing for a few moments of silence in memory of our departed Sister Velma Alexander.

Our secretary held roll call of officers and read the minutes from the previous meeting.

All other officers' reports were given.

We were sorry we had to report

names on the sick list, namely, Maggie Cernoch, Herbert Kieschnick and Michael Tumis.

New applicants for the month were Tyson Keith Long, Sr. and Gilberto Acosta. Our sales representative was Sidon Tumis for a total of $100,000 for these two new members.

Our lodge has a birthday during the month of May. We plan to have a little entertainment or refreshments in recognition of the lodge's birthday month.

Capsule drawing for membership attendance; this time $25 went unclaimed by Marvin Kaase, next month the drawing goes for $30; try to be present, you may be the lucky one.

Door prizes went to Elizabeth Hermis, Fred H. Buri, Rita Hermis and Frieda Johlke. The meeting adjourned at 2:30 p.m.

Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting held Sunday was called to order by our president Brother Jerry Milan and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

All the reports were approved as read after a minor change.

Brother Milan read a letter from Sister Thelma Hrncir of District VII in Corpus Christi. She will visit us at our May meeting. We welcome her.

Brother Milan also reminded us this is the last week for the Czech Cinema at the Granada Theater in Dallas.

Brother Don Steinman reported on the Sales Representatives' meeting held at Lodge 84. Sisters Rose Steinman and Jeanie Mason also attended. He also reminded us of the District III meeting for Sunday, April 29 at Lodge 6, Cottonwood and not to forget to set your clock of the time change.

Brother Milan reminded us of the YAD that we will host Sunday, July 1st. More information later.

Sister Steinman read a thank you note from Sister Marie Holasek; glad you are feeling better.

Recently, we have found that some of our members are getting into the Public Eye. Sister Mina Sponberg has been officiating regularly at a polling place during election time. Our Honorary President Sister Lillie Hejl joined a crowd of petitioners who wish to recall our City Council members for not doing their job right in running the City of Austin. We saw her on TV talking to reporters while the Council was in session.

The next regular meeting will be held Sunday, May 6th at 2:30 p.m. at the Prasatiks' home, 3000 Enfield Rd., Ph. 472-1721.

Dear Members and Friends: I failed to get the report from the March meeting because I was absent, however, I do wish to thank Pat Tomastik for taking the report for me but we never made contact so I will try to double up on this letter.

The April 11th meeting was called to order by President Louis Driska.

Everyone stood for the pledge to the flag.

All officers were present, except Vice President Edward Bartek.

At the March meeting President Rae Lisenbe resigned and also Recording Secretary Dorothy Lisenbe. Past President Rae Lisenbe had an unfortunate accident at his home while trimming trees and fell; he was unable to continue his duties as president of the lodge.

We'll miss these two people and wish Rae a speedy recovery so they can again attend the monthly meetings.

Vice President Louis Driska assumed the duties of president.

Edward Bartek was elected vice president and Pat Tomastik was elected recording secretary.

For Old Business: There was $300 donated to the Little RiverAcademy Fire Dept. A clothes dryer was purchased for First House from the Child Abuse Fund; Amos Electric of Temple let us have the dryer at their cost and for this Lodge 177 is grateful.

Walter Jezek has resigned as Bingo chairman and was replaced by Larry Bland. We say "Welcome to Larry and thank you to Walter who kept a good set of expenses."

Correspondence was read from The Temple Telegram on advertisement, March of Dimes, and a thank you note from the United Methodist Church of Little River.

Ernest Bunte, Little River Fire Chief, was present and also thanked the lodge for the donation and then spoke on the different functions of the fire department.

Visitors from Lodge 47 were Willie and Adeline Kohutek, Henry Vitek of Granger, and Gene Hrncir of Corpus Christi. Henry Vitek commended the lodge for all the good work that has come forth from Lodge 177, also presented a commendation to our lodge form the Human Resources Dept. We, the people, are rightly proud of all the many deeds that came from our lodge. Willie Kohutek and Henry Vitek took this time to announce their candidacy for Dist. II Director.

Gene Hrncir then also announced his wife's Thelma for the post.

A report on the bar was given by Co-Chairman Helen Bland. Kitchen Chairman Othen Jezek gave her monthly report and also her quarterly report. The kitchen is doing well.

Ticket Chairperson Frances Love had a good report.

Youth Leader Ann Tomastik gave her monthly report and her social calendar for the coming month. Ann is doing a fine job building up the youth club, but she will take any new members.

Co-Chairman Cecil Lagrange then gave his monthly report and stated since there was so much red tape with the IRS, the help would be on a voluntary basis so anyone who can help feel free to offer your services.

I failed to get the names of the new members for the last two meetings. However, I will try to get them in the next letter.

A report from Treasurer Josie Tomastik was then given.

Under New Business: The members donated $100 from the Bingo Fund to Ident-A-Child Program, also $50 to the Easter Seals, again from the Bingo Fund.

Larry Bland is a new sales representative for Lodge 177. If you need insurance contact Larry at 982-4675 at Little River.

Walter Jezek was added to the Child Abuse Committee and, at this time, I need to resign because I don't seem to have time to help Ann, Othen or Walter who are doing a good job.

All the small tables have been sold.

Board of Trustees' Report: President Louis Driska wanted to hire another CPA to take care of the books monthly, but was decided against since it was felt it would only be a repeat of what is already being done at an added expense.

A motion was made and seconded to adjourn the meeting. After the meeting adjourned at 8:24 p.m., there were refreshments and eats at the lodge for everyone's enjoyment.

President Louis Driska hopes to make this a monthly social, which will serve as a good way to get to know the new members better, so come to the next meeting at Lodge 177 which will be at 7:30 p.m. May 9th.

President Louis Grohoske opened our regular monthly meeting March 20 at 7:30 p.m. with Ben Jack Welch leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

After observing a moment of silence for our departed brothers and sisters, a roll call of officers revealed all present, except Flag Bearer Glenda Young who was ill.

Minutes of the last meeting were approved as read by Cindy Hampton.

All other officers and chairmen made their reports.

Improvements to our lodge are a much needed ticket booth and a new wall in the men's bathroom. Our thanks to Maintenance Chairman Ben Jack Welch for overseeing these projects.

Our next project is to insulate the walls in the well house and the water pipes in the ceiling of our lodge hall. Perhaps we can avert the big mess experience with frozen pipes during last winter's arctic spell.

Pinky Purinton's Big Band will not be playing April 21st, because so many people have told the Entertainment Committee that they would not come to a dance that night because of Easter Sunday and they would be out-of-town that weekend.

There will be a country and western dance held Saturday, April 28 with music by the Blue Grass and Old Style Country Band, so you country fans come on out and have a ball.

On the sick list is Sophia Havern; the lodge's prayers and thoughts are with her. Harry Musid will also be going into the hospital for more corrective surgery and Walter Parsons will be entering the hospital for eye surgery May 9. Our lodge wishes them well and hope their stay will not be long.

The lodge members voted to move the regular lodge meeting to the

third Sunday, May 20th. Remember, mark your calendar and be at the next monthly meeting Sunday, May 20th beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the lodge hall.

There was a very constructive decision at the meeting on things that need to be done on our lodge hall and which ones needed to be done first.

This is the way to get things done and to have more fun at your lodge.

If you haven't been to our meetings or socials since the new hall opened, you need to come and see what your officers and Building Committee have done in the past year; it is also a good way to have a good time and meet your friends.

If you members play bingo, why not come out and play at your lodge hall Sunday afternoons beginning at 2 p.m., also Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7;30 p.m. because you may find your friends there too.

We would like to continue this policy at the June convention. The Finance Committee has set a guide for the assistance of judging these cases: 1. The member who needs assistance must submit his/her name to the local lodge officers, who, in turn, will review the case.

2. The letter must explain why he/she needs assistance.

3. The letter must be signed by the local lodge president and secretary.

April 11, 1984 Vice President Kathy Trefell called the meeting to order, in the absence of President Pearl Hanka, who was out of town.

She read a poem called, "Folks" which everyone enjoyed.

Sister Rosalee Kostom, secretary, read the minutes from the previous meeting and they were approved as read. The correspondence was acknowledged.

Sister Lillie Spies, treasurer, could not give her report because she was ill. (Hope to see you next time.) It was so good to see all the sisters who were ill back. We missed everyone of you. Our sisters who were ill this time were Sisters Elsie Talcott, Emily Bily, Evelyn Mikolas and Stella Bukowski. It was nice to know that Brothers Miroslav Bily and Henry Knapick are at home doing well.

Sister Mary Tilich gave her report on the sale which will be June 3rd (Splash Day). She is still needing gifts for this project.

Hostesses for April were Sisters Agnes Pederson, Martha Sacho, Bessie Lero and Martha Walla.

Martha Sacho cooked for Alverda Wilson.

Dear Members: First thing I wish to say, that I am sorry Vincent Hegwood's name was left out of the list of officers; he was the third one from left to right in the back row.

I came home from Waco in the afternoon April 15 where I attended the State Federation of Porcelain Art Clubs of Texas 26th Annual Convention. (I understand we will be in Fort Worth next year; in fact, I was standing in the Teachers' Exhibit booth talking with some of the other teachers and a lady spoke to me, she and I had alike blouses.

When she came closer I saw her nametag, I asked her if she was a SPJST member and she said her inlaws were members; her name was Frances Kotrla of Temple, so it was so nice to make a new friend.)

I invited them to our Czech play scheduled for April 29th. We also will have a nice lunch starting at 11:30 a.m. and the play will begin at 2 p.m. If you don't have a ticket, we will have them at the door. The cast has been working hard to be ready for everyone.

A little bird told me that Fletcher James had a birthday April 8th. I hope you have many more.

We also had three of our shut-ins for the monthly meeting; our Czech Instructor William Souchek was looking fine and fit; Steve Kelly, one of our board members and, last but not least, Mr. Herbert Huber was his old smiling self. It's good to have these members back among us, again; we missed you fine fellows.

Cleanup Day turned out to bring out 96 members; from those 96 workers, 17 were youth members and they were busy helping. The lodge shone like a new penny when we finished. Of course, as I walked in, Franklin Bravenec was cleaning the pictures in the foyer and I had to tease him to hang them straight. (By the way, it seems I made a mistake; he is not in the nursing home, it's Frank Bravenec who is in the nursing home.)

The Blue Room party is April 27th with eats and a country/western dance.

The Birthday Club is now selling tickets for Splash Day Homecoming; if you have anything to give for it, bring it to Mary Tilich or Kathy Trefell, It seems the pool will open Saturday, May 19th from 1 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m.; Sunday, May 20th, it will open at 1:30 p.m. and stay open until 9 p.m., and will open for the summer June 2nd from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., also from 6 to 9 p.m.

Our Choral Group will be in Rosenberg Saturday, May 5th.

The District V fall meeting will be held September 30th at Lodge 88, and it will be a "Family Day" as we had last year so let's all make plans to be there and support our district.

We older ones have to set a pattern for our younger folks.

Oh! Lodge 88 has two new grandparents; they are none other than Mr. and Mrs. Joe Fusig, Jr.; their daughter and son-in-law Cathy and James Smith of Anderson, Texas had a little girl named Catie Jo; her brothers, Jason and Jimmy welcomed her; her great-grandparents were the late Joe and Mary

Fusig of Houston who we all loved and miss them.

The Shriners' Legion of Honor will have a dance May 25th (Friday) from 8:30 to 12:30, admission $5 per each ticket and the music will be by The Texas Brew playing country/ western music. You may contact Fran George at 686-3615 for your reservations so you can have your favorite table and I am sure you had better not put it off because it is for a good cause.

Dear Members and Friends: The meeting was called to order April 4th with 22 members present and guests Mary Dunlop, Bessie Brizina, and Maria Rambouskova of Karlovy Vary, Czechoslovakia and Mary and Benny Pavey.

The birthday members were Gertrude Johnston, Ailene Kercho, Donald Steinman and I , Lydia Alholm.

Due to the Omni Theater production, "The Great Barrier Reef" being extended to May 20th, it was decided not to plan for an excursion until June. The underwater production will be replaced by the film, "To Fly" May 25th.

Our thanks to Gertrude Johnston for the beautiful handmade Easter basket that she donated to the club to be used for a drawing prize. Annie Belota was the lucky winner for one of her grandchildren.

Once again, after being labeled the "Czech Lady" in Colleyville, my English friends told me of a lady who did not know of any Czech people in this vicinity. Also, her mother, Mrs. Rambouskova came on a seven-week's visit from Karlovy Vary, Czechoslovakia, and whom we escorted to many small Czech social events.

I wish to express many thanks to this club, Lodge No. 92 Ladies' Circle and especially the Dallas Circle of Czech Women who were so hospitable, and to all the courteous men at the "Depression" dance who gave her a whirl on the dance floor. Our friend has now returned to Czechoslovakia with mixed emotions about her trip, but with many pictures to reminisce the good times.

We wish to express sincere sympathy to the family of Mrs. Appa Steinman, mother of Donald Steinman, who passed away in Lebanon, Ohio April 13th. We wish Donald and Rosie a safe return home.

We also wish to express our sincere sympathy to the family of Mrs. Mary Laznovsky of Ennis, who passed away recently. Many of us did not know about her death until several weeks later.

To many of his friends in Dallas where he and his deceased wife had resided for many years, I wish to report that Mr. John Slovak, father of Christine Zich, is now at Francis Convalescent Center, 1000 6th Ave., Ft. Worth, Texas 76104. Your thoughtfulness and consideration of your elders is a tribute that is most rewarding in our everyday lives.

Congratulations to Hazel and Dick Toberny who entertained their good friends and relatives with a party

dance April 14th at the Sokol Athletic Center in Dallas on their 5th Wedding Anniversary. The party brought many friends together which revealed a true bond of fellowship that has existed for many years.

By the time this letter goes to press, the Easter picnic here on the farm will be over, and we do hope it will be a day where warm friendly fellowship is exchanged and the children will have a wonderful time.

The sounds were sweet and melodious as the Seaton Choral Club practiced for their appearance at the Buckholts Senior Citizens Talent Show Friday.

Those present and singing were Annie Jakubec (our song leader), Ann Krcha, Jerry Urubek, Dorothy Morris, Agnes Schiller, Della Psencik, Mary Holick, Jerry and Dorothy Pechal, Lillian and Frank Mikulec, Emily Stuteville, Martha Klusacek, Helen and Henry Janacek (our accompanist).

Club President Dorothy Morris presided at the meeting which followed. Lillian Mikulec, alternate secretary, read the minutes of the previous meeting.

Members were reminded that their dues are due and also that the date of the annual spring picnic is set for May 27 at the Morris's home.

Anyone from any other lodge or just someone interested in going to the Czech play in Houston is to contact Martha Klusacek by Wednesday, April 18 so that she can make arrangements for the bus.

The SPJST 1984 convention is scheduled in the near future, and I annot help but carry my thoughts back to 1962. At the time I served on the Publication Committee, when we, the committee, were told, our editor, Brother L. 0. Hosek, had passed away October 25, 1962. The PC was given instructions to advertise for a replacement for the position of editor. The ad was to run for three weeks.

During the time, without an editor, two members voluntarily stepped forward to help in the crisis, Brother Jos. Holasek, publisher, and Brother Jerome Kopecky offered to take the obligation on themselves, until a replacement could be found.

This offer was graciously accepted.

The ad at the end of three weeks was answered by seven applicants; out of the seven, Brother Nick Morris applied for the position of editor, and was, unanimously, elected by the PC and invited to Temple, Texas November 25, 1962 to meet with SL officers and the PC.

12/VESTNIR—Wednesday, April 25, 1984 We met and were pleasantly surprised to meet a young energetic man who was willing to learn journalistic (Journalism), and at the utmost to fulfill the required obligation, and as editor to prove himself. At this time, Brother Morris was accompanied by his lovely wife, Dorothy, and with their first born child. The members were very much pleased, and confident with the new editor.

Brother Nick Morris spent two years before the 1964 convention, and that year he was elected another four years to 1968. In the Dallas convention in 1968, Brother Nick Morris was elected to the president's chair with 10,960 votes, received a standing overwhelming ovation from the delegates and stated, "It will be hard to fill the shoes of the beloved Brother Edward L. Marek, but, with God's help and yours, I will do my best."

He presented his wife, Dorothy, at his side and children.

Brother Nick Morris was elected to the office of president in 1968, 1972, 1976 and in 1980 with 32,648 votes. During the many years of his accomplishments, it would take many, many pages to cover all wonderful things during his presidency. Brother Nick Morris appreciates to be at the helm of the SPJST with a fine group of experienced directors.

With all the years of experience as president of our SPJST, he has led our Society to many successes which has proven, that Brother Nick Morris has the overall ability to continue to lead our SPJST in the future, to higher goals.

Must Be Postmarked On Or Before May 17, 1984!

Reflections Before SPJST Convention Every four years the SPJST State Convention is held for the purpose of changing the bylaws, electing officers, directors, etc. I remember the days, when womankind was classed lower than mankind. Early in this century arose an organization named "Suffragettes" led by Susan B. Anthony. They never stopped the fight for their rights.

It is known that at the time when the KJT (Catholic Society of Texas) was organized no females were allowed acceptance; this was considered as lowering their status. Some of the progressive women put their heads together and established the KJZT (Catholic Women's Society).

They were very successful. When the KJT made attempts to combine these two organizations later, the answer was: "No, we were not welcome when you organized the KJT, now we don't need you!" But they cooperate, fraternally.

Women are pillars at home, of all existing churches and at some places they conduct the clerical duties as preachers or pastors, etc.

ternal, social and political organizations.

This XXIVth State Convention will open Monday, June 18th, 1984 in Corpus Christi, Texas; from this convention will come some new officers like before. There is no guarantee to anyone to serve his/her whole life in office. It is the democratic way. The Hrncir family is one of the early progressive pioneers residing in Corpus Christi, Texas.

For several years now, I leave my good home vacant and stay, for several weeks, at my dear daughter, Lillie and son-in-law, John Huber's in Austin. Saturday morning at 8:30 31 January 1984, my dear daughter, Ann, and her husband, '\Roy Peal, came to my home to take me to Kennedy, Texas where we met dear Lillie and her husband to take me to their home. We got there at 2 p.m.

My granddaughter Paula and her son, Harrison Huber Nichols, made a lovely visit with me on the same afternoon; granddaughter Nancy came the next week.

The large and small ranches around the cities are taken into the city limits. This happened where the smaller Huber ranch was also taken into the city limits. Their property is located near Round Rock on the west side of Burnet Road, This land, at the present time, is in the hands of speculators, developers and private enterprise.

When Lillie and John graduated from high schools, they attended the higher institutions that Austin offers to students. After World War II, they made Austin their home.

Son Johnny Stasa, for some time, with his family had eyes on Austin; near Manor was a ranch divided into lots. There is a creek supplied with fresh spring water at all times. It was a suitable place for a lake. All of the occupants have free access. It is 20 miles east of Austin. This land is covered with various trees. In Corpus Christi I keep my city utilities, electricity and telephone on and my two dear daughters, Olga with her husband, Emil Mokry, and Annie with her husband, Roy Peal, take care of it.

Saturday morning, April 6th, we visited the "Nasinec," there we met the owner, Mr. Jos. Vrabel. We bought various things. The printing shop is an antique. We ate lunch in a barbecue shop and Kubacak's products.

From the Youth Leaders Lodge 84, Dallas Junior Youth The months in 1984 are swiftly passing by, however, the- junior youth of Lodge 84 have been very active.

In January the children held their monthly meeting. After the meeting the children enjoyed a craft which was planned for them by Lynda Novak and Barbara Wolfe. This was displayed in the mother lodge meeting.

January 29 the children enjoyed a skating party at White Rock Skating Rink, Birthday Party with cup cakes and drinks followed.

The February meeting was held Sunday, the day of our mother lodge initiation. This was followed by a family dinner.

March 12 monthly meeting—Craft

by Linda Coker, ceramic Easter eggs were painted by the youth; each had an egg to show in the mother lodge meeting.

Plans for the future are as follows: April 16 —Monthly meeting and a craft (already in the past) April 21— Easter egg hunt at a public park at Hillcrest, S. Western and Carruth St. This is in University Park; time 10:30 a.m.; lunch at 11:30 a.m.; also games and prizes.

Bring a decorated egg for the contest. Please come and have fun.

May 6 —Field Day at Flag Pole Hill at 2 p.m.; also refreshments, games, contest. Prizes will be awarded. Invite a friend and make plans to attend.

May 21— Monthly meeting and, again, a craft is in store for those who attend the meeting; the craft will be given by Lynda Novak.

June 4 — All point sheets and YAD cards are due. Bessie Petr should have all of these by that date.

A schedule of Beseda rehearsals will be announced in May and June.

June meeting date is pending due to the SPJST Convention. This will be announced as soon as possible. Also an educational trip to the dental office of Dr. Jim Novak; you will also be notified of this date.

July 2 — Camp forms are due; two forms per child are required; a green one, and a white one; camp dates will be: July 23, 24, 25 and 26. Let us all make plans to go to camp this year.

Many things are planned for your enjoyment, so let's make a 100% showing.

July 10 — Water Slide activity. We will notify you of place and time.

It takes time and money to let these things happen. At this time, I want to thank the leaders for their time in planning and carrying out the activities.

92, Ft. Worth Had Successful Egg Hunt

The youth club of Lodge 92 at Fort Worth had their Easter egg hunt Sunday, April 15th. Everyone had a good time. Prizes were found

by Melissa Hubenak and Doug Gilcrease in the smallest group; Kelly Kubala and Carla Watkins were winners in the next group, and in the oldest group both prize eggs were won by Craig Jones.

We also had a hunt for the adults.

If you think everyone doesn't love to hunt just hide cans of beer for the adults and watch them hunt.

There were about 50 people present for the egg hunt and afterwards everyone enjoyed barbecue sandwiches.

We would love to see all of you back for Mother's Day because that will be our next meeting Sunday, May 13 at 1 p.m.

We must sustain that note of hope, which our achievements in many fields so amply justify, until it overpowers the voices of fear, cynicism and reaction. We must gain enough confidence in ourselves and in each other to turn our ideals and our potential into reality.

If we were to ask ourselves: What could we work on together now?, a vast range of fascinating possibilities for enhancing the condition and the quality of life opens up before us.

We have too often, in the past, been forced to regret some aspects of progress, and have been driven to act belatedly to mitigate them. We are now in a position, if, we work together, to foresee and do, to some extent, to, determine the future course of development. We can do this, however, only if we cease to fear and harass each other and if together we accept, welcome and plan the changes that must inevitably come about.

If this really means a change in "Human nature," then it is high time we began work toward such a change. What is certainly required is a change in some human political attitudes and habits. Intelligent selfinterest is reason enough for making this change, already long overdue in this process. ***

Plain Talk About Life Insurance A New Look at Wives and Mothers One person who has a way of getting lost in the shuffle when it comes to life insurance is Mom. She just doesn't seem to get her fair share of the pie, so to speak. Actually, the American Council of Life Insurance has figures on it. While most women have some life insurance, according to a 1976 study, the average amount is less than $8,000 compared to $29,000 for men.* Considering the economic value of your average wife and mother these days, there are plainly some gaps in coverage there.

Let's see what they are and what might be done about them.

Yardsticks Whether they're earning incomes or are full-time homemakers, the nation's wives and mothers make a large and measurable economic contribution to their families. Just how large was the subject of a recent study by a couple of Cornell researchers, William Gauger and Kathryn Walker. They looked at a random sample of some 1,400 families and used 1978 wage rates for a variety of jobs. Their findings: The price tag for things like cooking, cleaning, mending and assorted household chores comes to about $14,000 a year for a family of four.

That's not small potatoes, and most of the work is done by you-knowwho. According to Gauger and Walker, women do the giant's share, even when they have outside jobs. Specifically, in a family of four with children between 12 and 17, a full-time homemaker contributed $10,000 worth of household work a year. Dad kicked in $2,200 and the teens' share was $1,100 each. That totals out to $14,400.

In another family where the mother is employed full-time, her contribution was pared back to $6,300 worth of household work a year. But, lo and behold, the contributions of Dad and the kids stayed right about where they were in the other family.

The study goes on to report that "in no type of family did the average time contributed by husband, teenager or younger child go over three hours a day. On the other hand, in no instance did the wife's average time drop below four hours a day." Putting even a finer point on it, Walker and Gauger add that their findings "do not show that husbands increase their work contribution if their wives are employed."

No wonder those life insurance figures are so skimpy. A lot of families still haven't figured out that household chores aren't just women's work. They would —in a big hurry—if anything were to happen to the chief cook and bottle washer.

Given that unfortunate turn of events, a family without reasonable life insurance coverage would be forced to do one of two things: divide up the work and do it themselves or

use current income to pay someone else to do it. With reasonable life insurance coverage the choices are about the same—except for the current income part. Considering how much money could be involved every year, that's no minor difference.

So, What's Reasonable?

Which brings us around to the matter of reasonable life insurance coverage for Mom. Beyond making sure that final expenses are covered, however, I can't trot out any rule of thumb to go by on this one. There are too many things to consider for that. We can look at some of the factors involved in figuring out what it might be in a given situation, though.

Basically, the more children a family has and the higher the family's income and standard of living, the more life insurance protection they need. One big item, of course, is whether or not the wife has an outside job. If she has, her income is the place to start when deciding how much life insurance she needs. How much of it should be insured depends on how much ordinarily goes to keeping the family's chin above water, financially speaking.

Another thing to consider is how much is used strictly by her. (This all applies to the husband's income too.

We went into the insurance needs of the two-income family in an earlier column.)

One surprise from the Cornell research which should be mentioned here is that "wives who work outside the home generally spend about two hours less a day on household chores than their non-working counterparts." That's not much when you think about it. So in planning reasonable life insurance coverage, the working wife's value as a homemaker should not be too quickly discounted. Again, a lot depends on the individual case.

Some families would be able to close ranks and pitch in better than others.

This becomes even more of an issue, of course, in families where Mom is a full-time homemaker. Planning reasonable coverage, say, in the single-income family of four from the survey, might go something like this.

They'd probably start with base protection of $5,000 or so to cover final expenses. They know that Mom's economic contribution is about $10,000 a year (that's what they'd have to pay someone else to do it). With two children spending a lot of time in school and at other activities, it's decided to provide full protection for the first year and 50% coverage for the second and third years ($5,000 per year). By then, they reason, the oldest child may have left home and the younger

one will be old enough to help out more around the house. How much is reasonable life insurance coverage?

In this case, approximately $25,000.

Premium Priorities For single-income families like this one, protecting the full-time homemaker's economic worth can become largely a matter of premium priorities. Most of their premium dollars should go toward insuring the wage earner. Once this is done, however, other needs —including reasonable coverage for Mom—should be considered. This is less of a problem in two-income families, where premiums can be apportioned out of each income.

A Bigger Slice of the Pie The American Council of Life Insurance statistics and the Cornell study show that something is wrong with the way most people go about insuring wives and mothers. Ample needs, little coverage. Really, they deserve better, don't you think?

Fortunately, there are life insurance plans available these days to fit just about every conceivable situation and need at a modest price.

Our friends can no doubt provide the kind of reasonable protection we're talking about without having to take out a second mortgage. And it can probably work about the same way for you and your family. Funeral Costs Can Be A Shock When making funeral arrangements, most of us are in no shape to rationally seek the best buy.

Yet it's no small expense: In 1984, funeral costs for adults will average $1,500 to $3,000, says the Better Business Bureau.

But that estimate doesn't include vaults, interment receptacles, cemetery or cremeation expenses, a monument, a clergyman, flowers, newspaper notices and transportation charges. ° Generally, funeral home charges include staff services and a casket or other receptacle for the body.

Other types of burial costs: • Outer enclosures. Vaults range from $200 to $1,500; sectional concrete boxes are $95 to $300 and wooden boxes are $60 to $200.

• Cemeteries. The cost of an individual plot ranges from $100 to $1,500, reflecting maintenance fees.

• Mausoleums. Indoor individual crypts are about $700; outdoor crypts start at about $450.

• Cremation. The average cost ranges from $200 to $500.

• Body donation. If accepted by a medical institution, survivors still might have to pay transportation expenses to the institution and any funeral arrangements.
