COMMENTS ATTENTION LODGE MEMBERS: The editor will be needing your lodge's history from June 1980 through December 1983 for the convention special issue as soon as possible because all of this information has required for publication: 1. If you have a new lodge building that was build and dedication within that period, etc.

2. Appoximately how many members does you lodge have.

3. How many 50-year members and give names, if possible.

4. Any members who outlived their insurance policy by attaining age 96, include name(s).

5. Approximate amount of charitable donations.

6. Do you have a member of members in your lodge who serve in the State and/or Federal heads of office?

7. How many times has your lodge hosted an SPJST Convention?

8. Submit a black/white picture (Preferably) of your officers for 1984 only 9. Be sure to double space whether typing or in handwriting.

10. Include sufficient postage for returning pictures.

April 29th was designated in our SPJST for four important events, namely: District I meeting at Lodge 39 (near Bryan) on Highway2l; District III meeting which will be hosted by Lodge 6, Cottonwood (near West); and District IV meeting at the senior Citizens Center in Seymour; Lodge 73 will act as host lodge.

Another activity will be the Czech presentation entitled "Nevesty na prodej" (Brides for Sale) at Lodge 88 in Houston. Prior to the 2 p.m. staged play by the "Hlahol" Dramatic Club, the Kovanda Band promises to entertain you. (We understand many people are anticipating to attend the 3-act comedy from various parts of the state. We hope so, because the actors will be delighted with your presence.) *** Tornado Season. This is the season for tornadoes which usually last through June or so and, of course, no portion of the continent is immune to them. Little can be done to take care of your personal' belongings, however, deaths and injuries can be limited with planning ahead.

It is wise to keep a battery-type radio, flashlight and fresh batteries on hand. It is also wise to be alert of the safety shelters (if you work in a city or town where on can be used).

It is advisable to make an inventory of your household furnishings and other personal possessions, and maintain it in a safe location away from the premises.

Plan to make certain that the entire household members know what to do when tornado warning is given. If a tornado warning is issued in your area, never get away in your

automobile because no vehicle can match the seift, or erratic movement of a tornado. In fact, we suggest that you head for the nearest shelter or preferable a ditch; if you have to. If you are in the house, hide in the bathroom, closet or hallway, if possible.

After the storm passes, be alert of broken electrical devices, shattered glass, splintered wood plus other sharp objects. *** The National Safety Council warns that a person should never mow up and down a hill with a walk-behind mower. LIf you slip, your foot could go under the mower. It is better to mow across the face of a hill. On a ridingmower, you should mow up and down the hill to avoid tipping over.

Reducing Risk of Cancer. While doctors debate the risk of X-Ray danger, they agree that excessive Xrays may cause harmful changes in body cells, possibly increasing the risk of cancer and birth defects. The American Red Cross advises: Never ask for an X-ray, and when your doctor orders one, find out if it is important. It is wise to keep a record of previous X-rays, and tell your physian about them. When receiving an X-ray, ask for a gonadal shield.

Women sould be sure to tell them if they are pregnant. *

Did you know that you can get the most accurate time check in the world from Master Clock in the United States? Yes, it's now available for public use The master clock time is set by the Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C.; by dialing (1-900) 410-TIME, callers will hear a recorded announcement of the time.

Callers will be charged 50e for the first minute and 35C for each additional minute.

The editor does not work for the IRS, however, it is wise to check and see if you qualify for one of the most popular ways to avoid a penalty for not having enough tax withheld or for failing to make large enough estimated payments. If your tax payments during a year are short of the minimum due, you are not penalized, provided they are at least equal to your prior year's liability on a quarter-by-quarter basis. Internal Revenue Service computers, starting with returns filed for 1983 income, will check for that exemption. IRS says that filing Form 2210 is no longer required.

How long to keep tax records?

Since the IRS will disallow any deductions that you cannot prove, Deloitte Ilaskings & Sells recommends that all tax records, such as W-2 Forms, Forms 1099, receipts, paid checks, be kept as long as the return is open to review. This usually is for three years.

Seymour Will Host District IV Meeting Lodge 73 held their regular monthly meeting April 1st at the Senior Citizens Center with a good attendance. We had our Easter dinner which consisted of fried chicken, and the ladies brought their finest cooking.

Our Lodge 73 will host the District IV meeting April 29 at the Senior Citizens Center on 500 Belknap in Seymour beginning at 1:30 p.m.

We cordially invite all Supreme Lodge officers and their wives, the editor and his wife, all members of the SPJST of District IV, and the other six districts to our District IV meeting.

We will serve lunch (consisting of sandwiches and pastries). The members of Lodge 73 are to bring two pies, cake or kolache and two items for door prizes, such as pot plants, food or craft.

Come to the meeting and see your friends and enjoy a day of fellowship.

District V Spring Meeting President Tillie Helmcamp called the meeting to order at 1:30 p.m.

March 11, 1984. Stefanik Lodge 142 hosted the meeting.

Colors were presented by District Flag Bearer Jeffrey Barcak and Lodge 142 Flag Bearer Kieth Kieschnick who led in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. Sister Helen Hegwood and Brother Tim Kostom, accompanied by the Concert Orchestra of 88, led the membership in the "Star Spangled Banner" and "Kde Domov Muj".

Lodge 142 President Mary Ann Kieschnick welcomed the guests, saying she was happy to see all and hoped they enjoyed the meal. She was thankful for the good crowd.

1st Vice President Jerry Prochazka responded, saying it is always a pleasure to come together for a district gathering with folks having a common interest. Stating that the dinner and music by the orchestra and choral club were good, he thanked Lodge 142 for hosting the meeting.

President Kieschnick of the host lodge led the memorial service for departed members. As Jason Hermis lighted the candles, she read a passage from the Bible. The members were then asked to rise in a moment of silent tribute to those departed.

District Youth Counselor Dorothy Pflughaupt stated that is has been a busy year and that she has many new ideas for the future. She then presented the program, a classroom scene, which was enjoyed by all. The youth adjourned for their meeting.

Secretary Viola Cox called the roll of lodges with nine represented.

President Helmcamp recognized the lodge presidents. Vice President Prochazka recognized the 50-year members. Those present were asked to stand. The secretary read the minutes, which were approved as read, and the correspondence.

Members appointed to the Auditing Committee were Arnold Spencer (88), Julius Zella (172) and Alvin Franta (91). Those appointed to the Balloting Committee were Bennie Kocich (88), Charlie Matcek (81), Robert Kieschnick (142), John Mikeska (172) and Evelyn Mikeska (176).

Treasurer Tommie Lostak gave the district financial report showing a balance of $1,679.28 in the youth fund and $2,962.81 in the district general expense fund. Director Louis Hanus presented checks from the Supreme Lodge of $3,122.50 to the youth and $400.00 to the district.

President Helmcamp expressed thanks for the spendid cooperation she had received. The Fall Family Day was great. Because this meeting was well-advertised, she extended special thanks to those who publicized it. She thanked Lodge 142 for the good dinner and the Concert Orchestra and Choral Club of Lodge 88 for the spendid entertainment.

She then presented checks from the district to Director Tim Kostom of the Choral Club and President James Hutchison of the Orchestra.

Rest Homes Director Herbert Nowotny stated that the Needville Home is filled to capacity with a waiting list. There has been discussion of an expansion, however, nothing definite as yet. Brother Nowotny expressed the opinion that expansion is needed due to the wonderful man in charge and also to the help at the home.

District V Director Louis Hanus, reporting for the Supreme Lodge stated that once again, District V had a banner year, with all lodges cooperating fully.

He reported that our Society had a 6.82 0/0 increase in assets in 1983, making it the biggest one year gain over the past 10 years.

District V received a total of $49,584 refund of the $620,000 in premiums submitted to the home office.

This represents 27% of the total, indicating that we contribute more than any other district. Our district met their quota of $3,000,000 for 1983 with 807 members signed up.

Director Hanus spoke of the new Annuity and IRA plans which are now available. He very cleverly used little Paul Pflughaupt in presenting this method of saving.

He announced that a new scholarship brochure for 1984-85 was being printed. Applicants will be required to have a minimum of $5,000 in insurance.

Brother Hanus thanked everyone for doing a good job. He then presented checks, awards for 1983, to the Sales Representatives.

President Helmcamp asked all convention delegates to stand and invited delegates from other lodges to the Lodge 88 delegate meeting.

Editor Rudy Sefcik thanked Lodge 142 for their hospitality and

the Concert Orchestra and Choral Club for their entertainment. He discussed the convention issue of the Vestnik, asking everyone to send anything from the past four years not included in the hostory. The Publication Committee decided to leave the decision as to size and color to the editor and publisher.

District VII Director Thelma Hrncir brought greetings from her district and especially Lodge 79, which is hosting the convention.

President Helmcamp introduced the following members of standing committees: By Laws —Mildred Holeman, Publication — Tommie Lostak, Finance —Jerry Prochazka and insurance—Helen Hegwood.

There was no old business. Under new business, President Helmcamp relinquished the chair to Vice President Prochazka. Stating that we have the wrong date for the fall meeting with too many other activities, she made a motion that we set aside the third. Sunday in September for this meeting. After a second by Mary Ann Kieschnick, it was amended to the fourth Sunday, accepted, and passed. Sister Mary Schenburn made a motion that we have Family Day instead of a regular meeting, seconded by Jerry Prochazka, and passed.

Julius Zella, reporting for the Auditing Committee, said the books are in order and moved that they be accepted. Motion was seconded by Amos Kadlecek and passed.

DYC Dorothy Pflughaupt announced that the youth had elected the following officers: President Jeff Barcak, Vice President Lee Pflughaupt, Secretary-Treasurer Eddie Stnakrer, Reporter Doris Fabrigel, Sgt. at Arms Kieth Kieschnick. She stated that she has enjoyed working with the youth with her husband, Larry, helping and Lynn Pflughaupt assisting.

Sister Mary Ann Kieschnick, saying that she cannot find a youth leader, made a motion that we have a districtwide youth club meeting on a quarterly basis. Motion was seconded by Larry Pflughaupt. After a discussion of the advantages of this idea, the motion carried.

The election of officers was next on the agenda. Elected by acclamation were President Tillie Helmcamp, 1st Vice President Jerry Prochazka, 2nd Vice President Sidon Tumis, Secretary Viola Cox, Treasurer Tommie Lostak, Youth Counselor Dorothy Pflughaupt, Assistant Youth Counselor Lynn Pflughaupt and Flag Bearer Jeffrey Barcak.

Selection of the site for Family Day was next. Brother Charlie Matcek made a motion, seconded by Amos Kadlecek, to let the district officers decide on the site. Motion passed.

Sister Rose Sicner announced the Czech Play at Lodge 88 on Sunday, April 29. Vice President Prochazka made other announcements. He invited everyone to the social immediately after the meeting, with the district furnishing refreshments.

President Helmcamp stated that Sister Frances Olexa and Brother Herbert Huber are home from the hospital. Both of them have always attended our meetings and are missed very much. She recognized Prof. William Souchek who spoke briefly.

Director Louis Hanus installed

FRATERNAL AFFAIRS SECTION Dear Readers: Lodge 185, Hill Country, will host a Child Abuse and Neglect Program Thursday, April 12, at the Eagles Lodge in New Braunfels. The program, which will be presented by Ms. Phyllis Moore, DHR supervisor, will follow the regular monthly business meeting which begins at 8 p.m.

All interested SPJST members and friends are invited to attend the program which will include slide presentation "Other People's Children" and a discussion of the needs in the Hill Country area.

Snook Lodge 9 Holds Monthly Meeting The March 7, 1984 meeting was called to order by Vice President James Schoenemann.

Secretary Lyndon Jakubik read the minutes of our February meeting, and they were approved as read.

The Property Committee report was then given by Ruthe Kovar.

Betty Schoenemann gave the following youth report: Activities for the youth include State Tournament, Lions Club Supper and Dance for the Youth Members.

Correspondence: Letter on taxpayer's number and beer license.

Old business covered our annual chicken-dumpling supper set for April 14, 1984 at 6 p.m. All are encouraged to come out for good food and a good time. At this time we will also make presentation of our 50year pins.

Our special guest for the evening was Brother Ben Trcalek.

Lodge 13, Dime Box Cancels Monthly Meeting Dear Members: Lodge 13 in Dime Box had their monthly meeting Sunday, March 19, 1984. President Claude Flippin called the meeting to order at approximately 2:07 p.m.

Flag Bearer Penny Spitzenberger led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance to our American flag.

There were approximately twenty-five members present.

Secretary Dorothy Rackel read the secretary's minutes. Sister Magdelene Iselt gave a financial report, and Sister Doris Balcar gave the treasurer's report; all of these reports were approved and accepted as read.

In new business we discussed the usage of the hall for "Frankie Riske Day" for June 9, 1984; if the weather would not be suitable for the originally scheduled date, then a street dance will be at downtown Dime Box. The members of Lodge 13 made a decision, after much discussion, to allow the dance to take place, but only if the weather was unsuitable.

The dance would take place as a regular dance with tickets being sold at the door and the admission going to the hall; the decision was made due to the fact that the hall made a commitment to never let the hall be rented out for dances, unless it is for a church or voluntary-orientated occasion; so, in case, if the dance is held at the hall an admission would be paid at the door to enter.

We would like to welcome two new members, Chelli Fritz and her brother, Eric Fritz. We would also like to mention that Sister Albina Milburn has an additional policy.

There was a moment of silent prayer to a deceased member, Anna Kiser; she became an active member in 1897. She was also the 13th member to be given an insurance policy to the lodge of No. 13, Dime Box. Sister Anna Kiser was the last original charter member of our lodge.

The annual Balcar family reunion will be held June 16, 1984. They asked permission for the use of the bar at their reunion. They agreed to pay for the workers behind the bar who will be approved by our bar Chairman Dorothy Rackel.

A motion was made that the lodge would donate $50 toward the cause of "Frankie Riske Day." Door prize winners were: 1st — Tobin Iselt, 2nd—Albin Horak, 3rd — Frances Greenwood.

President Claude Flippin then adjourned the meeting. He also invited everyone to stay and listen to the special program on drugs that immediately followed the meeting.

The next meeting is cancelled due to it being Palm Sunday.

15 Meeting For Lodge 66, Waco April

President Johnnie Gaidusek called the March 18 meeting to order at 2:30 p.m.

Flag Bearers were Bill Warrenand Kevin Owen. Kevin also led the Pledge of Allegiance.

All officers were present for the meeting. Our guide, Brother George Pauling, thanked Brother Emil Hanus for stepping in and helping in his absence.

Everyone was asked to bow their heads in a moment of silent prayer for our departed Brother Bob Mills.

We had three new members, they are Nell C. Robert, Michael Thomas Rose and David Kofnovec. Welcome and, hope to see you in attendance at our meetings.

We had one visitor, Brother Rudy Zalman of Lodge 35, Elk. Thank you for coming.

Our secretary then read the minutes, of our previous meeting.

They were approved as read.

Sister Engelke reported that the board of trustees met at their regular meeting, March 6th. A Clean-up Day will be scheduled in the near future. It was also brought up that the meeting date be changed to Wednesday, as in the past.

Youth Leader Kay Owen reported that the youth club is still collecting sacks, soup labels, cans and glass. At the next meeting each child was to decorate two hard boiled eggs for a contest. The youth leader asked the mother lodge for $100 to help buy the candy for an Easter egg hunt.

Michelle Shelton brought the birthday cake.

President Gaidusek then asked for a motion to give the money for the egg hunt to the youth club. A motion was made and everyone agreed that they should have it.

Sister Dorothy Shilling gave the Entertainment Committee report.

She is always such a joy to listen to.

Everyone brought sandwiches and the lodge furnished chips and doughnuts. For the April meeting, the ladies are asked to bring a casserole.

The lodge will furnish the other things. Lunch will be served at 1 p.m. For the lodge's annual Christmas party, Jimmie Nemec will play.

Sympathy cards were sent to Mr. Bill Nors (mother passed away); Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Pratka (her mother); Sister Dorothy Moore (loss of a cousin); Mrs. Bob Mills (loss of her husband); Mr. and Mrs. Tim Urbanek (his mother); Sister Libbie Parma (loss of relative); and Mrs. Goldsmith. Get well cards were sent to Brothers Joe Kozlovsky and William Bounds, Sr. Sister Irene Mueller gave the Welfare Committee report in the absence of Sister Jeanette Smith. She read "thank you's" from Mr. and

Mrs. Robert Pruitt, Lena Wilkins and the family of Mary Veselka.

Sister Engelke then read the Expression of Sympathy for Brother Robert E. Mills.

Under new business Sister Ruby Orsag reported that the lodge needed a new refrigerator and could use a tea service for use at weddings, etc. A motion was made on this and carried.

Sister Dungan said that the lodge should purchase some new curtains; this would be discussed later.

President Gaidusek presented a check, from the lodge, to the Libbie Parma Trust Fund.

Sister Barbara Brem read a letter from District III Treasurer Albert Banik and presented the youth club with a check for the summer camp.

Sister Engelke asked all members present to applaud Larry Brem, youth club member; his entry at the Stock Show earned him a trophy and $1500. We are very proud of your accomplishment.

District III sales representatives' meeting in Waco was successful. Sister Engelke won the door prize.

Refund checks were then handed out to those present.

Birthdays for the month of March were: Mrs. Matilda Hanus, Jewell Worhal, M. Trefny, Anna Vernetti, Batt Vernetti, Dorothy Warren, Bill Warren and Kathy Warren.

The door prize winner was Dorothy Moore. Our meeting adjourned at 3:10 p.m.

87, Temple To Honor 50-Yr. Members

SPJST Lodge 87 will honor the fifty-year member recipients at the regular meeting Friday evening, April 13 at 7 p.m.

Miscellaneous News From Lodge 88, Houston Dear Members, Wednesday night, March 28 was picture-taking time for the Board of Trustees, Choral Club (in their Czech costumes), and the Czech Concert Orchestra.

Florena Taak is still in Hillsboro, Texas enjoying the clean country air.

I understand that Henry Knapick is in the Methodist Hospital where he had heart surgery, March 28th.

We wish you the best of luck and get well soon so you can be with us, again!

Oh, I got ahead of myself; Frances Olexa is doing real good because she was at the lodge Wednesday night for picture-taking looking good as usual. Steve Kelly was also there looking fine; in fact, he is walking real good after his knee surgery.

I have some sad news; our Brother Frank Tymel passed away Sunday, April 1st. Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Heights Chapel and interment was at Woodlawn Cemetery. Brother Frank Tymel served on different committees and we will miss him around Lodge 88. We have lost Frank and his sister, Cecelia Klecka (if I'm correct) in about one month. I feel for the family. May our prayers be with them.

I wasn't here this weekend because we went to the lake to see about our place; it was so peaceful and quiet while we rested, slept and ate.

Let us not forget April 29th, the day of our "Hlahol" dramatic club that will have a Czech play at Lodge 88 where you will be with old friends and enjoy a nice meal during a nice day.

Let us not forget also our monthly lodge meeting Monday, April 9th.

We were proud to have District V Youth Counselor Dorothy Pflughaupt and her husband, Larry, in our midst.

Secretary Alice Jochen held roll call of officers and all were present.

The secretary then read the minutes from the previous meeting which stood approved as read.

All officers' reports were given.

We had eight new applicants for the month, namely, Sara Martha Sicola, Stephanie M. Saulnier, Shawn M. Saulnier, Donald R. Saulnier, Evelyn Geisler, Cathy Chaloupka and David Chaloupka; Brother Sidon Tumis was the sales representative for these eight members.

Brother Henry Hermis made a motion to accept the new members, and it was seconded by Brother Dennis Hermis.

Our President May Ann Kieschnick gave a report of District V meeting at our Lodge 142 and barbecue brisket dinner and "Happy Hour" furnished by District V, which followed. This was thoroughly enjoyed by all and surely an event to be remembered for a long time.

Our Sick Committee reported that Dorothy Tumis is under the weather and in the hospital, but she is home now and taking some therapy for her back. Sister Dorothy, keep doing well and we hope to see you at our next meeting. We missed you!

Mark your calendars: September 23 will be Family Day for District V. The youth will again put on a youth spectacular, along with other fun items.

Capsule drawing for $20 went unclaimed because Vincent Battaglia was absent; come to the next meeting, and you could be the winner of $25 then.

Choral Club News

While the wind howled and blew the dust outside, inside the sounds were harmonious as the Seaton Choral Club met in regualr practice session preparing for their appearance at the Buckholts Senior Citizens Talent Contest April 13.

Those present and singing were Dorothy Morris, Helen Janacek, Agnes Schiller, Martha Klusacek, Thelma Bartosh, Lillian and Frank Mikulec, Mary Holick, Della Psencik, Dorothy Pechal, Mathu and Elsie Cabla, Emily Dohnalik, and Annie Jakubec.

May 27th was set as the date for the annual spring picnic to be held at the Morris home. The Morris' plan to furnish the meat for the barbecue while the other members are to bring complementing dishes and sweets. Further details will be published later.

Anyone wanting to go by bus to the Czech play, to be given at Lodge 88 in Houston April 29, is asked to get in touch with Martha Klusacek.

This is a golden opportunity to hear our lovely Czech language.

Czech Language School At Charles University In Prague - July 1984 Plans are being developed with the Czechoslovak Foreign Institute (CSUZ) for a group of American students of the Czech language to attend a summer school at Charles University in Prague, Czechoslovakia during the three-week period June 28 to July 19, 1984.

This three-week summer course will consist of two weeks of lectures and study in the Czech language and the third week of sight-seeing tours of Prague and other regions of Czechoslovakia. During the three weeks there will also be visits to museums, theatres and concerts.

All expenses for housing, meals, tours and entertainment will be covered by the Czechoslovak Foreign Institute: however, the students will have to pay their own air fare costs from their U.S. destinations to Prague and return.

Travel to Prague will be from N.Y. Kennedy Airport on Czechoslovak Air Line leaving New York Thursday, June 28 at 7:10 p.m. and arriving Prague Ruzne Airport Friday, June 29 at 9:30 a.m. Departure from Prague will be Thursday, July 19 at 1:30 p.m. and arriving N.Y. Kennedy at 5 p.m.

usimummorilm■ STATEWIDE YOUTH LEADERS' RETREAT A RESOUNDING SUCCESS Forty-one persons gathered at Camp Lone Star near La Grange the weekend of 24-25 March for our annual Statewide Youth Leaders' Retreat. Judging from the written comments of many of those who attended, the entire retreat was a big success.

The presenters/speakers were unusually good and well qualified in the areas on which they spoke, Clarence Schulze of the Fayette County Ambulance Emergency Medical Services gave an excellent presentation and demonstration on the Heimlich Maneuver which is essentially the technique used to prevent a person from choking to death on food. He pointed out that one never knows when he might be in a place where a person is in dire trouble because of inability to swallow food. He showed the proper technique and method of expelling the food from the mouth, thereby saving the person's life. He also covered briefly the basics in administering CPR aid (CardioPulmonary Resuscitation).

The other speaker was the principal of La Grange High School, Erwin Sladek. Mr. Sladek was very knowledgeable in many areas, broadly speaking, that of youthful behavior why young people do the things they do, discipline, general behavior patterns, why parents behave the way they do and their relation to their offspring, and also how the use of drugs is affecting the performance of our young people, both in school and in life in general. His presentation was liberally sprinkled with stories of personal experiences and this made his talk even more meaningful. He also used humor in a most effective manner. He held his audience's rapt attention for almost 21/2 hours and when he asked if they wanted a break, they unanimously intoned, "Keep on going!"

The entire Youth Rule Book was gone over by President Morris and the seven DYCs and a number of questions and areas were addressed.

An exchange of information was held and there were periods of general communication. The entire Retreat was held in an informal relaxed atmosphere and the pleasant and comfortable surroundings of the Retreat Center at Camp Lone Star were certainly conducive to the learning process. There were no distracting elements, such as passing automobiles, sirens, and other human distractions. The accommodations and meals were excellent and all of this served to en-

hance and boost the morale of an already enthusiastic group. You can see this on the faces in the accompanying picture.

The young LITS from Houston attending issued a challenge to the other districts for next year to attend the Retreat and this is certainly commendable. We are urging that LITs and anyone who is a potential leader and/or interested in our youth program and youth in general to make plans for the next year's Retreat. The date is tentatively set for the weekend of March 23rd and 24th.

As always, there were a number of persons who had previously indicated that they would attend by sending in the coupon in the Vestnik, but who, for one reason or another were unable to attend.

Fourteen persons fell into this category. If they had all attended, we would have had a total of 56 attending the Retreat. We missed them and we are sorry that they did not get to come, but they obviously had good reasons for not coming and we do not fault them for this.

The meeting started at 9:30 a.m. and all morning was spent planning the Youth Achievement Day, which will be held June 24 at the Senior Citizens Center in Seymour, Texas.

We had a covered dish dinner which we all enjoyed, and we didn't lose much time going to town to eat as before!

After dinner I had a 'scrambled word game prepared for the leaders which consisted of words pertaining to youth activities that took quite some time to figure out; no one was perfect. Thank you all for coming.

I attended Lone Star Camp at La Grange where the youth leaders' retreat was held March 23rd, 24th and 25th. I want to thank the Supreme Lodge for making it possible for me to attend this retreat to gain so much knowledge and to meet so many new people from the other districts. I enjoyed it so much.

LODGE 6, COTTONWOOD PREPARES FOR EASTER ACTIVITIES Dear Readers, Spring is here and time for a lot of outdoor activities.

Our club had a kite-flying contest and several charity projects for the month of March.

We are working on Easter items and plan to visit the residents at the West Rest Haven.

Our Easter program and egg hunt are being planned for April. We will also have prizes.

The District III meeting will be held April 29 at our lodge, and we hope to have a good attendance.

Longview Student Attends Valley Forge Program Shelley Newell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Newell, and president of the Longview High School Anchor Club, was selected by the Longview Pilot Club to attend the Annual Valley Forge Freedoms Foundation Program for students in satellite organizations of Pilot International.

Miss Newell attended the fourday program with girls from over the nation.

Miss Newell is active in all phases of school life including Student Council, National Honor Society, Thespians, Musical Comedy Company and is a member of the Longview Bank and Trust Student Board of Directors. In addition, she is in Pan Am Club, Jets Club and Christ on Campus.

She is a senior and plans to enroll at Baylor University in the fall and major in education.

Shelley is a member of SPJST Lodge 178, Longview-Kilgore.

Sheriff Bobby Weaver Monday was presented the distinguished service award by the Reserve Law Officers Association of America for the successful use of reserve officers in the Gregg County Sheriff's Department.

The award was presented to Weaver by Otto Vehle of San Antonio, national director of the association.

Weaver said the national association was recognizing the tenure of the reserve officers and also the expanded use of reserves.

"In some places, reserves are used only for security at ball games and riding in rodeos," Weaver said.

"Here, the reserves do anything a regular deputy does."

The reserves, who are trained volunteers, have authority to act only when so authorized by the sheriff. Weaver uses the reserves to supplement the regular officers, thus allowing them to do other tasks.

Reserves must pass a course taught at a police academy, and must pay not only for their training but also for their uniforms and equipment.

In 1983, the reserves contributed more than 10,000 hours of volunteer time working for the sheriff's department, Weaver said.

Lawrence was born 10 August 1917 at George West, Texas. Before he was 15 he was a born radio operator, and builder of custom guns, from target handguns to the super accurate bench rest rifles. He designed and made his own hunting fire arms, also built his own rifle barrel drilling and rifling machines.

He left school in the 10th grade to ride the cattle trains of the state during the depression, worked as a welder on Boulder Dam, joined the Navy when he became old enough spending time learning more about mechanical engineering, and steam engineering, also machine ship (tool and die making). Lawrence, a sailor in the Navy through World War II, started with the sinking of the Bismark in the Atlantic, picking up survivors of the USS Ruben James in October 1941, and repairing the USS Kearney in early November 1941 in Ireland. He served from Alaska to Australia and the Korean War. Lawrence retired from the Navy about a quarter century ago, then worked for an aircraft plant; aircraft engineering repairs, tool and die, electric shop, diesel design and repairs, and now he is a production advisor for a couple of shops; he gets paid for his experience.

He got to hunt and fish on five continents at one time or another, in Japan he used to shoot Mallard ducks at night while they flew across the moon, he said try it sometime; it's fun.

His other hobbies are racing cars, boats, airplanes and motorcycles.

Lawrence thanked for the very lovely 50-year membership pin; it is in very good taste, he commented.

Our Lady of Victory Cathedral was the setting Saturday morning for the vows uniting Claudia Ellen McCarty and Warren Ray Milberger, both of Victoria, in marriage.

The bride was escorted to the altar and given in marriage by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert S. McCarty. The groom is the son of Mrs. Thelma Milberger of Victoria and the late Roy Milberger.

The bride wore a formal gown fashioned of candlelight silk organza over peau de soie. The fitted bodice held a high cameo neckline, overlaid with Alencon lace and seed pearls.

The long full sleeves of silk organza

were accented at the fitted cuffs with Alencon lace appliques. The princess style flowing skirt fell into a chapel length train and was encircled by a wide band of Alencon lace at the hemline.

A triple-strand halo of twisted seed pearls, fashioned by the bride, caught her formal length veil of silk illusion, edged with matching lace.

The bride wore pearl earrings and a diamond solitaire ring, both gifts from the groom.

Miss McCarty carried a small cascade of fringed ivory mums, jonquils, phlox and violets, accented with English ivy and satin streamers.

Mrs. John Ramos of Chandler, Ariz., attended her sister as matron of honor. Bridesmaids included D'ette Milberger and Becky Milberger, both sisters of the groom.

Mrs. Tommy Kallus of Raleigh, N.C., sister of the groom, read the second reading.

The attendants wore tea length dresses fashioned of deep raspberry chiffon over taffeta. Ivory lace shaped the rounded collars, tailored bodices and short, puffed sleeves.

The attendants carried handmade bouquets of rocaille and seed pearl flowers with assorted stems, accented with pussywillow and baby's breath.

Michael Milberger served his brother as best man. Groomsmen included Robby Milberger, brother of the groom, and Bruce Milberger, cousin of the groom.

The altar boy was Andrew McCarty, brother of the bride.

A reception was held at the Victoria Women's Clubhouse following the wedding. Louise Moore and Teresa Smith assisted in serving.

Rita Milberger presided over the bride's book.

Following wedding travel to Phoenix, Ariz., the couple will reside in Victoria.

Lekce Thiruictci — Lesson No. 13 Accent (stress) and Intonation In this lesson, we will discuss some rules and guides to speaking correct Czech, and using stress and intonation.

In Czech, the accent is invariably on the first syllable: — PRA-ce, SKA-kat, 2. In the case of 3 or more syllables, there is a secondary accent on the 3rd syllable: PRA-co-VA-ti, VZDE-la-VAsi, ZA-patio-VA-ti.

3. One syllable prepositions form one single unit with the word following, and are always accented: Do Prahy (doprahy), po \Take (povalce).

4. If the preposition consists of only one consonant, v, z, s, k — it must be joined in a single sound with the word following k yam kvam — (not ke yam): V Novem Yorku (not ve Novem Yorku).

5. Before other groups of consonants these prepositions are said in full and accented: VE stfedu, KE mne, SE mnou, ZEAkoly.

6. Prepositions are pronounced in full if the word following begins with

the same sound: VE Vidni, KE kostelu, SE sestrou, ZE zeme. The reason for this is because double consonants are pronounced as single consonants in Czech: (Anna, cennY). A double vv or double kk are not pronounceable. However, in a word like nejjemnejAi, the two j's are separated because nej is a superlative prefix.

7. Although the accent is always on the first syllable, it does not lengthen a short vowel following it, and we must not yield to the temptation to STRESS long vowels outside the first syllable. The length or shortness of a vowel has no bearing on the stress.

8. Stress is not as strongly marked in Czech as in English, German, or Russian. The intonation (melody of the speech — its "musicalness"), that is, the rise and fall in the pitch of the voice, is not made up from as many tunes and patterns as in the above 3 languages. The voice does not rise to as high a pitch, nor does it fall low as readily as in the above languages. In these respects, the Czech language, may be said to be rather "flat" and monotone in character.

9. The outstanding feature of Czech speech is the contrast between long and short vowels, alternating in succession, giving it a rather staccato character.

10. Finally, this rule should probably be observed: if you're not sure which syllable is to accented, don't accent any; this will be better than stressing the wrong one Don't worry too much about stresses and intonation at this point, but make it a part of each lesson as we move along.
