Congressman Bob Poage Visits Home Office

Retired Congressman Bob Poage visited the SPJST Home Office this past week. Mr. Poage has been a member of the SPJST for close to fifty years. Ruth Hanusch of the Home Office staff is pictured returning the certificate to the congessman after she made some necessary changes. Mr. Poage asked that we pass on his warmest regards to his fellow SPJST members.

selimismimms Conventiontime is approaching us rapidly and your editor wishes to emphasize the fact that some of the lodges and/or individuals may seem to think there is ample time left for submitting our advertisements in the Convention Brochure.

In this issue Sister Peggy Tepera from Corpus Christi Lodge 79 and who is also serving on the Convention Committee, is calling your attention to the fact that they (the committee) has extended their deadline to April 10th; hurry, and submit your selected ad along with your monetary donation to them.

Sister Tepera is also calling attention to the "baby-sitting services" during the convention period. If this applies to any of our younger delegates, kindly acknowledge their request, because they need to know in advance in order to make further arrangements with their local staff. ** March 11th was indeed a beautiful day for District V to hold their district spring meeting at Lodge Stefanik No. 142 in Houston. The entire day's program seemed to move swiftly and the large audience seemed to enjoy the lively entertainment performed by Lodge 88 Czech Concert Orchestra and Choral Club.

Some of their numbers from their music library were sung especially from the famous Moravanka Brass Band of Czechoslovakia who toured the United States in 1979-80.

(Perhaps you may be delighted to know that Budvarka Brass Band from Czechoslovakia will be touring some states and they will also appear in Texas at two locations only; September 21st at SPJST Lodge 25 in Ennis and September 22nd at West Auditorium in West.)

The reports from all District V officers indicated that 1983 was another banner year for their district. The over 5 million insurance sales made by their repre sentatives is also well-known that they are the largest group in the state for being the most productive producers to qualify to sell the "annuity" program.

It's always good to hear that there is a waiting list at the S.F'.J.S.T. Rest Homes. When costs continue increasing on management operations at the homes, one cannot complain about it too much, especially when we have good administrators with dedicated staff and domestic help. Those of us who visit and/or entertain the residents at these homes value their continuous care of others. All the rest home district directors are to be commended for keeping S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes in Taylor and Needville in excellent condition.

District V has planned their fall meeting and Family Day for September 23rd; the location shall be announced in the future. From the nine lodge representations, we hope there will be another successful occasion.

Those of you who were involved with the District V meeting and

those who showed so much interest, are complimented for being real "troopers", the socializing portion was also "like in the older days" when District V was organized in the 50s. Our hats off to all of you!

Pertaining to our Society's "Preamble," one of the main purposes is; "to endeavor to keep alive the cherished traditions, customs and language of our forefathers." Among one of the groups in our organization that maintains interest of such purpose is the Dramatic Club at Lodge 88 in Houston.

A group of members at Lodge 88 organized a Dramatic Club in 1908 and named it "Hlahol" (Beautiful song sound) because the Czech people are known for their music, singing, dancing, and drama. It was also the "oldtimers" wish for the younger generations to perpetuate the language; for nearly 76 years their wishes are kept alive and we hope it continues to be so.

The present enthusiastic Drama Club has announced their staged presentation "Brides For Sale" scheduled for April 29th. This production promises the spectators a hilarious comedy, therefore, we suggest you bring your parents or friends, who speak the language, to see it Let's support this Drama Club because it's the only one left in Texas.

It would be nice if some of you could get together and charter a bus to see the live production. We hope you do!

In some instances a member may not fully understand the various forms of insurance certificates now being offered.

Every member is entitled, and should familiarize themselves, as to their rights under the provisions of their membership certificates. This is all the more important with young members who had been transferred from the Juvenile Department at the age, when life insurance is the least interesting subject. Since then they have matured intellectually and emotionally. There is a bit of seriousness which had gotten into the carefree mood of yesteryear, especially since the arrival of Junior.

Your membership certificate, secured for you with little effort on your part, needs to be re-examined.

Not that it`wouldn't be good or legal.

But you, yourself, should know what you have and if it is all you need. In various instances, your certificate is similar to the ones your parents secured for themselves many years ago. Would you say that your requirements are the same as those of your parents? Is your certificate only to provide funds for your last illness and burial expenses?

Reunion ELZNER REUNION The third annual Elmer family reunion will be held 14 July 1984 at the Sokol Hall in Ennis. Texas.

From the Office of the Financial Secretary VESTNIK SURVEY In processing the replies to the current Vestnik survey, we have encountered a number of requests asking that a family member or friend be added to the mailing list. Due to the fact that we need the signature of the member who is requesting the Vestnik, we will not be taking any action to add these members at another members request. THE MEMBER WHO WANTS THE VESTNIK MUST REQUEST IT. We have also received a substantial number of name changes. The names, as they appear on your reply card, are taken from our computer file.

Those name changes that are typographical errors are being changed. If your name was not correct (other than typographical error) it is not correct on your insurance certificate. Rentember it is your responsibility to notify the Home Office officially of a name change. By you changing your name on this survey card does not authorize us to make a certificate change. This is the only way we have to keep your certificate up-dated.

Recommended By-Law Changes To The SPJST By-Law Committee To: By-laws Committee for 1984 Convention From: SPJST Insurance Committee The Insurance Committee of the SPJST respectfully submits the following by-laws changes for your consideration. These changes have all been discussed and they are un-

animously endorsed by this committee.

Helen Hegwood Ben Jarma Chairman, Ins. Com . Sec., Ins. Corn. *** 1. Membership (page 3) delete "enjoy good health" replace with "are insurable"; also delete "who are capable of earning a living in a respectable manner" 2. Article 3(b) delete "through the medium of lodges" and delete "established by the convention" and replace with "that are in effect" 3. Article 4(a) 2. replace with "For each additional 100 members, one additional delegate if the lodge achieves its insurance goal; if goal is not reached, for each additional 150 members, one additional delegate.

Note: A lodge meets its insurance goal when it achieves a 150/0 increase of net premium income for the year of the convention and the two years following the convention (excluding annuities) 4. Article 10(b) delete "former presidents and all former vicepresidents" and replace with "retired officers" 5. Article 23 delete "two (2) times" and replace with "as requested by the vice-president" 6. Article 33(b) After word increase add "or decrease" 7. Article 38(d) delete "nonmedical" and replace with "insurance" and (f) replace "at least once a year" with "as he deems necessary". Peggy J. Tepera Convention Committee Member Bro. Donnie Victorick By-Law Committee Secretary P.O. Box 85 Snook, Texas 77878 To the By-Law Committee: The Finance Committee met March 10 and 11th, and wishes to submit the following recommendations: Add to Article 28: A. Any replacement officer elected by the Convention in a contested election involving the incumbent will assume duties July 1, in the year of his election or as soon as possible thereafter, but in no event, no later than September 1.

(1) Any such incumbent officer being replaced shall be relieved of his duties June 30, and paid for the remainder of his term.

(2) Any replacement officer in the Supreme Lodge shall be paid 80% of scheduled salary until he becomes acquainted and experienced in the duties of his position. The Supreme Lodge will evaluate the progress of the replacement officer and make necessary adjustments to salary as appropriate.

Add to Article 44: (E) All Supreme Lodge Officers, retired Officers, members of a standing committee and candidates who are not delegates shall attend their District Caucus meeting, and shall have the right to deliberate.

Retired Officers, members of a standing committee and candidates may be elected to a committee, but will not have the right to vote.

Effective immediately.

Editor-Add: When the present Editor retires, this office shall be an appointed office. The Supreme Lodge shall hire or appoint the Editor and shall set the salary.

Respectfully Submitted, Rita J. Vanek, Finance Committee, Sec. *** SPJST By-Laws Changes From SPJST Lodge No. 94, Wheelock, Texas Art. 28 — Members elected to the Supreme Lodge assume duties of their respective offices on the 1st day of the month following adjournment of the convention.

Any incumbent member of the Supreme Lodge not re-elected at the convention is dismissed immediately but shall continue receiving amenities of salary, retirement and insurance benefits through contract term of office.

Reason: Prior to acquisition of the computer, soft ware and data bases,

the presence or absence of the defeated incumbent was of no great concern. However a malevolentinclined individual could now in minutes destroy years of computer progress.

New Art. — Members of standing and appointed committees have, on the floor of the convention and in their respective caucus, the right to deliberate, make motions to amend by-laws and are eligible for reelection to committees but do not have the privilege to vote or to nominate members to positions unless they are delegates to the convention.

Reason: Members of committees are to a high degree the backbone of the Society and in all past conventions the non-delegate committee members position has had to be determined by a vote from the floor instigated by the chairman of the convention. This new by-law defines specifically the position of nondelegate committee members.

XXIVth SPJST Quadrennial Convention Set For Corpus Christi In June The XXIVth Quadrennial Convention of the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas, better known by the initials "SPJST", is set for the Bayfront Plaza Convention Center in Corpus Christi to commence Monday morning, June the 18th, 1984. Delegates will start arriving and registering at noon June 17th. A "Howdy Party" is being held for the delegates in the Convention Center Sunday evening, June 17th, and is being hosted by the Convention Planning Committee of the host lodge from SPJST Lodge No. 79, Corpus Christi.

The Convention Planning Committee will also host a Monday night social and dance Monday evening, with music by the popular Leo Majek Orchestra of Corpus Christi.

The Supreme Lodge (governing body between conventions) will sponsor and host the Tuesday evening banquet at the Convention Center, followed by ballroom dancing, with music furnished by the Eddie Galvan Orchestra of Corpus Christi. A number of highachieving youth will be recognized as special guests during the banquet, as well as leading sales

4 /VESTNIK—Wednesday, March 28, 1984 representatives of the SPJST and a number of visiting heads of other Fraternal Societies present that evening.

The SPJST is a Fraternal Benefit Insurance Society, having been founded in La Grange, Texas, July 1, 1897. The organization has grown to over 65,000 members statewide, with assets exceeding $32,000,000.

The members (certificate-holders) are insured with an aggregate of over $150,000,000. The SPJST has consistently been given an A + rating by Best's Insurance Rating Service. The organization consists of 124 local lodges throughout the State of Texas, all affiliated with the Supreme Lodge Headquarters in Temple, Texas.

The purpose of the organization is to encourage individual and group social responsibility; to provide economic security and benevolent assistance to members, their families, and other needy persons; and to encourage and promote American patriotism and the study and retention of the Czech language, traditions, and cultural heritage.

Those persons are eligible for membership who have qualified under the moral, citizenship, health and other requirements of the organization. Contrary to common belief, membership is NOT restricted to persons of Czech descent.

The SPJST offers scholarships, community involvement through a statewide volunteer project in support of protective services for children in cooperation with the Texas Department of Human Resources; constructed and continues to support two ultramodern rest homes for the aged in Taylor and Needville, Texas; supports and promotes youth clubs in local lodges offering various activities of interest to young people. Most importantly, however, the SPJST offers complete fraternal life insurance protection for the entire family available at the lowest possible cost and operates under the laws of the State Board of Insurance, with periodic examination by officials of that Board. In addition to a complete line of life insurance protection, the SPJST recently inaugurated and offers a complete line of annuity products.

The Supreme Lodge consists of five executive officers and seven directors, one from each df the seven districts throughout the state.

This will be the second convention held in Corpus Christi, the previous one having been held in that city in 1944. Approximately 395 delegates are eligible to attend this convention and represent their local units.

VII Fall Meeting and Family Day

District

District VII fall meeting and Family Day was held in San Antonio in Comanche Park No. 3. The meeting was hosted by Lodge 133, San Antonio.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led

by Jennifer Marek of Lodge 117, Robstown and Stacie Bielefeld of Lodge 107, Floresville. A moment of silence was observed in memory of District VII deceased members.

Brother Emil Matula, president of Lodge 133, welcomed the members and guests and he wished all an enjoyable day. He also thanked the committee for doing a good job of setting this up. Lodge 133 furnished the meat and drinks. Guests were introduced by Brother Matula.

The minutes of the last meeting were not read since they were published in the Vestnik; after a minor correction, they were approved.

Sister Maxine Pavliska, DYC, gave the following report: 80% estimate of Camping Fund— $2,903.00; 2% balance of Camp Fund — $652.66. District VII youth clubs will be going to a new camp, "Lone Star Camp" in La Grange. In 1983, District V camped with District VII at Val Verde. District VII YAD will be hosted by Lodge 107, July 8, 1984.

District VII outing will be held July 12, 13, 14 and 15 at HEB Camp near Leakey.

Brother Ernest Jasek, treasurer, gave his report.

District VII Rest Homes Director, Brother Eugene Hrncir, reported that the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes are operating in good condition.

Sister Thelma Hrncir, director of District VII, brought wishes for a successful meeting from the Supreme Lodge. She announced the four winners in the Scholarship Awards of District VII; they are Brother Sralla (Lodge 107), Brother Doug Jasek (185), Sister House (161), and Sister Frances Faye McDonald (117). Congratulations are in order for these recipients. At this time, the sales representatives were introduced. In her report she stated that SL has hired a new actuary, John Agee, and that the Premium Rule Book will be simplified. Loan allocations for each district is $250,000 (Real Estate) at 111/2% next quarter. SPJST is the only Fraternal Society that has a publication published every week. A vote was taken in regard of the Vestnik publication; those present all were in favor that it be published weekly.

Sister Hrncir reported on Child Abuse and Neglect and asked that all lodges support the program. The following are volunteer coordinators: Sister Kathryn Marek (Lodge 117), Sister Maxine Pavliska (107), and Brother Frank Veselka (79).

Brother Monta Foster (Lodge 79, Corpus), chairman of the Convention Committee, gave a report on the convention activities.

A count of members representing lodges were taken; Lodge 133, San Antonio had the highest count; the youngest member, Michelle Popp of Lodge 133; the oldest senior member, Sister Emilie Amburn also of Lodge 133 were each awarded $5

by District VII President Marek.

The meeting adjourned at 2:45 P.m.

Sister Maxine Pavliska planned entertainment and games for all those present; since this Family Day was the 29th and Halloween the 31st, the games played pertained to that occasion. Adults and the children enjoyed playing threelegged race, water balloons, etc.

planning the entertainment for that afternoon. Many of those present had the pleasure of gathering pecans before and after the meeting.

The meeting and Family Day were enjoyed by all and agreed that such an occasion should be repeated.

No. 15 9 Buckholts Meeting Lodge

Dear Members, With the weather beginning to get a little warmer, looks like the flowers and gardens are beginning to grow a little.

Buckholts SPJST meeting was held March 14 with President Ann Balusek opening the meeting by leading all the members in the Pledge of Allegiance after which we remained standing for a few moments of silence in honor of our departed Brother Guy Tittle who passed away February 16. Roll call showed all officers present.

Secretary Charlsie Svetlik read a thank you card from the Guy Tittle family and a letter from the Headquarters office about our five members who are in the club for 50 years. All committee reports were accepted as read. Congratulations to Brother Anton and Sister Debbie Dohnalik on the birth of a sweet baby boy, named Adam Michael born February 25. Much happiness to you all.

The bar is just about finished and it sure does look good and whenever it is finished, we will have a clean-up day so please, all members, be sure and come help clean up. We are getting ready for a reception for our 50-year members sometime in May. Will let you know more about that later. The members voted to make the March donation of $50.00 to the Cancer Fund. Two members, Sister Carrie Svetlik and Brother Louis Svetlik, are on the sick list. Carrie is still in the hospital but Louis is out of the hospital, now.

We had three guests at the meeting — Brother Dan Balusek and Thomas and June Harwell. We were very happy to have you and please come again. After singing 'Happy Birthday' to Brother Warren Hillman, who is 29, again.

The meeting was adjourned and all present enjoyed a delicious Mexican supper prepared by Sisters Pat Hillman and Chailene Kamenicky. Thank you both for it.

Just a reminder our next meeting will be held April 11 at 7 p.m. It would be so nice to see more members come; we do have a lot of fun!

Lodge 24, Cyclone Sets April 11th Meeting Dear Readers: The March meeting of Lodge 24 was called to order by President David Vanicek.

Henry Vitek; we really were glad to see both of you and please feel free to come by whenever you can.

Secretary Pat Vanicek read the minutes of the February meeting which were approved.

Celebrating a birthday in March was David Vanicek. Anniversary celebrants are Ben and Regina Zabcik, Bernice and Joe Sebek, and Lynn and Arleen Tschoerner. We hope each of you had a happy day on your special occasion.

New business discussed was changing one of the rules in the Rules and Regulations. Members discussed changing some prices concerning cleanup after reunions, weddings, and anniversaries. Now, there is a price difference depending on what you are having, such as a reunion is cheaper than an anniversary, etc. to be cleaned after. We would like to amend these prices, so come to the next meeting to vote on the changes.

New members to our lodge are: Chatte and Heide Wilson, Dennis Westerman, Andrew Stuart, Charles, Deanna and Melissa Horn.

Additional policy was taken out by Linda Morgan. Welcome to Lodge 24!

Due to new rules from the state the security officers, we presently hire, will no longer be able to have much power over individuals, therefore, the constable will let us hire "off-duty" deputies for security.

Youth Leader Carol Chervenka gave the youth report. She said the youth members need to get their projects in full swing for the YAD coming up July 8th at Taylor; also the youth club is selling candy bars for 50C for a fund-raising project, so if you see any of the youth club members, buy a candy bar and help them out.

Brother Vitek and Brother Kohutek, both said a few words about the meetings and the upcoming convention.

The chairmen of the picnic rally reported on their duties; we need people for kitchen help and also items for the auction. Please help in any way you can. We will also be needing a cake from each member (two per family). Again, we really need auction items, so, please, get some nice items to the hall whenever you can.

We' will be needing a kitchen chairman for the month of May. If interested let us know at the April meeting.

The "Gathering" will take place after the meeting.

Wednesday, March 28, 1984—YESTNiK/5 Brother Matt S. Vanek, director of District VI and Brother Silas H. Smith, one of the state field managers from the Supreme Lodge attended the March 4th meeting.

The usual number of reports were given and accepted. Brother James Otto was elected as one of the lodge sales representatives. Brothers Vanek and Smith both spoke on the need of sales representatives and other subjects.

Brother Vanek donated a chain bracelet and tie bar as additional door prizes. Sister Julie Janik won the chain bracelet and Brother Albert Lupik won the tie bar. Sister Ann Luquette won the regular door prize and, in turn, donated it to the kitchen special fund.

Sisters Kortis, Haverda, Janik, Srubar, Foytik, Luquette and Nezval donated enough to make the social a success. The lodge furnished the ham sandwiches and some of the liquid refreshments. All who stayed enjoyed themselves.

29, Taylor To Honor 50-Yr. Members

The March 11, 1984 meeting of SPJST Lodge 29 was called to order

by President Edwin Adamek.

Andy Wuensche presented the flag and led the members by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing for a few moments of silence for our departed Brother Edwin Kovar, who was a longtime, active and devoted member and he will be greatly missed.

Roll call of officers was held with all present, except Youth Leader Melvin Steger and Sister Geraldine Steger.

Secretary Michael Kaiser read the minutes of the previous meeting; after a minor correction, they were approved.

The treasurer's report and the Property Committee report were also given.

Correspondence cards were read from the Kevin Kaatz family and from the RVOS letting them hold their meeting at our lodge hall in February.

President Adamek welcomed District II Director Henry Vitek to our meeting, (he spoke a few words to the members) and Dr. Charles E. Kine and his wife.

New applicants received in our lodge are Curtis Ging, Tracie Ging, Megan Elaine Marek and Christopher Leigh Stenholm.

A motion was made that we buy a full page ad in the SPJST Convention Brochure.

Audit Committee consists of Edith Shiller, Donna Pasemann and Dorothy Hirt.

At our April meeting, we will present 50-year membership pins and plaques to fifteen members.

They are: Henry J. Zak, Vlasta Vordenbaum, Ray F. Zak, Wilkins J. Koneschik, Georgia Kincl, Fannie Zak, Robert J. Koneschik, Rudolph Lutonsky, Nelcie B. Wilson, Amelia P. Cuba, Hermina Strimiska, Anna Trcka, Lillie Svrcina and Louis A. Kincl.

Assistant Youth Leader Donna Pasemann reported that they had 25 members present at their meeting.

For their March social, they went bowling in Round Rock. For their April social, they will attend the Ice Capades in Austin. John Wuensche was elected to represent the youth club in our May Fete which will be held Sunday, May 6th.

At our February meeting we had election of May Fete Queen. Elected May Fete Queen is Denise Wuensche, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Wuensche. Elected SPJST Queen is Kimberly Caesar, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Caesar; and our Princess is Natalie Ging, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Ging.

Our May Fete Sunday, May 6th crowning of the queen will start at 3 p.m.; a free dance will be from 6 to 10 , with music by Eddie Ray and the Polka Dots. A barbecue dinner and supper will be served, so mark this date on your calendar.

President Adamek reminded the members of the District II spring meeting, which will be held at Lodge 80, Holland, Sunday, March 25th.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, April '8 at 4 p.m.

Dear Readers: Our March meeting opened with the pledge to the flag. All officers were present.

Secretary Rosemarie Banik read a thank you note from Mary Beralek's family, and informed us of our 50year members who are Libby Mezzles, Willie Mae Holub, Eddie Jurecka and Frank Mach.

Our guests were Tillie Matus, Robert Cunningham, Pamela Cullens and Tammy Robinson. We hope they come visit with us again.

Our youth leader reported that they had five members and two guests present for their meeting.

They plan an outing to "White Water", the first week in June and they are to have a cake walk April 7th.

All chairmen gave their reports and thanked all for their help.

Ruby Pavelka and Dawn Pavelka had birthdays this month.

Under old business, the purchase of new chairs was discussed and approved. The membership gave approval to put up for sale the wooden and metal chairs we now have. There is to be a limit of 10 chairs per member on the metal chairs. Members who wish to buy these chairs should let it be made known to the secretary between now and the April meeting.

Our door prize was won by Gene E. Pavelka and Tommy Pavelka.

Before I close this report, our congratulations go to Mary and Randy Pavelka on the arrival of a baby girl; the proud grandparents are Ruby and Charles Pavelka and Anna Ruth White. We hope they will bring her to visit with us at our next meeting which will be April 8th.

Lodge 79, Corpus Christi March Meeting Our monthly meeting was held at 7 p.m. March 14, 1984 at our lodge home.

The meeting was opened by President Veselka and he led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

Roll call showed all officers present, except our financial secretary. There were fifteen members and two guests present.

The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved, also all other reports were given.

Under old business the final plans for our District VII meeting to be held Sunday, April 1 were discussed.

We will serve sausage wrap-arounds and sauerkraut, dessert and coffee beginning at 11 a.m.

There was no new business.

The Cheer Committee (Milly and Peggy) visited Sister- Agnes Bollom at her home the first part of March and on the 20th at P & S Hospital.

She is doing better and was expected to go home the next day.

Brother Frank Sacky will be reentering the hospital for further surgery April 1st.

Nancy Carter and daughter, Crissy, were visiting at our lodge home the night of our meeting. She is the daughter of Jerry and Jill Sijansky.

Dear Members and Friends: Our regular monthly meeting was held March 13th. Everyone enjoyed a chili supper at 6 p.m. and then the meeting was called to order promptly at 7:30 p.m. by President Charlie Matcek.

The Pledge of Allegiance to our flag was led by Benita Walzel and everyone remained standing for a moment of silence as a tribute to our deceased member, Raymond Mazac.

Our sympathy goes to the family.

All officers answered the roll call.

Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes of the previous meeting and also read a card of thanks for monetary donations to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II, Richmond State School, and the American Red Cross.

Financial Secretary Jo Ann Morgan gave her report.

Treasurer's statement was given by Willie Mae Kuykendal. Special Fund Treasurer Gilbert Walzel gave the schedule of activities at the hall for the coming month and then gave the financial report. All of these reports were accepted as given.

Several members were reported on the sick list. Lillie Vitek, who had been at the Poll ∎ R y an Hospital for several weeks, is now at the Fort Bend Nursing Home at Rosenberg.

Ed Orsak has had hip surgery, but is recuperating at home now. Vlasta Holt has had a heart attack, but is better now. Lester Luedke also has been ill. We were glad to get a favorable report on Stanley Slacalek and we are now looking forward to seeing you at the meetings.

A new policy was issued to Kimberly A. Dujordan, and Sylvester Poncik took out additional insurance.

Our next meeting is scheduled for April 15 at 2 p.M. This Sunday we will honor several 50-year Members.

We will serve a turkey and dressing dinner at 12:15 p.m. Benita Walzel and Winnifred Susan volunIteered to bake the turkey and dressing and the rest of us ladies will bring the trimmings.

The District V meeting held at Lodge 142 was represented by Herbert and Vlasta Nowotny, and Charlie and Mary Matcek from our lodge. Thanks to them. A very good report was given by. Vlasta and Mary as to the wonderful entertainment provided by Lodge 88 before and after the meal. The memorial service and the youth skit and, of course, the meal was excellent. Brother Matcek and Brother Nowotny also added some favorable remarks. Thanks for these wonderful reports.

Sister Nowotny reported mailing get-well cards to the sick members.

Refund checks were handed out and the recipients of the attendance prizes were August Teykl and Lillie Teykl.

There being no further business the meeting adjourned.

Brother Ermis Receives 50-Year Pin

Lydmil Ermis (left) received his 50-year pin from President Lloyd House.

Lydmil has been a member of SPJST for the past 50 years. He and his wife, Mary Kace Ermis, are members of La Parita Lodge No. 161 and so are his two sons, Leroy and Leonard and his three grandchildren. He has lived in Atascosa County for 61 years. He is the son of Joe and Rosie Ermis. His parents were also members of Lodge No. 161. He went to work for the Postal Department Christmas of 1947 and retired in 1974 as Post Master of Jourdanton.

La Parita Lodge Honors Member Lodge La Parita 161 held its regular quarterly meeting on March 11th, 1984 at Three Oaks Restaurant in Pleasanton, Texas.

The meeting was called to order

We had two new members Frances Kovar and Mary Wallace.

There were 15 members and two guests present.

President Lloyd House presented a 50-year pin to Lydmil Ermis. Lawrence Skaloud also was to receive a 50-year pin but was not present.

News On Lodge 183, Mid-Cities

Dear Members: The regular monthly meeting was held at the new lodge building Sunday, March 11th.

All reports were read and approved. There were discussions on completing all of the things at the new hall before announcing a date for Grand Opening.

Two new members Billy Wane Dossey and Darlene Roznovsky were voted on and approved. The lodge welcomes them and we hope they will enjoy the lodge activities.

The lodge wishes to thank the Albert and Inez Greenlees families of Lodge 183, and Louis and Mydelle Grochoske, Marilyn Seely, Lawirie Hunt and Allen Seely, all of Lodge 180 for donating a United States flag to the lodge. It will be on display at all times in the lodge hall; also a thank you to Gracie Kneschk for donating a piano to the lodge and to the Star House for donating a pool table. This is what helps Lodge 183 grow and get new members so tell all of your friends and bring them to lodge activities so the representatives can write them up and keep the lodge growing.

Members a reminder: District III meeting will be held at Cottonwood Lodge 6, April 29th so make your plans and be there.

There also are plans being made to attend the State Convention in Corpus Christi in June; check with President Phill Boyle for more information.

Sorry members, I failed to make the last dance at the lodge March 17th, but I would like to remind you of the next dance when Pinky Purinton's Big Band will be back March 31st and, again, April 21st, so come on out and have a good time at the

new hall and dance to the music of the 1950s.

Three Lodge 183 Representatives Daniel Roznovsky, Inez Greenlees, Norman Kneschk, and Mary Ann Roznovsky and Gracie Kneschk attended the dinner/seminar in Ennis at the Wagon Wheel Restaurant. The meal was delicious and had a very informative talk by Gene McBride. The representatives were told of some of the new changes that will be made in the near future.

Just a few thoughts to think about: Experience: A wonderful thing! It enables you to recognize a mistake when you make one, again.

Achievement: The man who rows the bcat generally doesn't have time to rock it. Success: Seems to be largely a matter of hanging on after others have let go.

186, Caldwell Hosted Benefit Dance Lodge

A benefit dance was held at our lodge hall February 17th for Angie Charanza, a teenager, who was injured in a car accident the end of last year.

Her recovery period is real good, but a lot of medical costs have added up for the family.

The SPJST Lodge 186 in Caldwell in conjunction with Mrs. Ester Bates held a dance and cake auction.

All of Angie's teenage friends came out plus a lot of adults. The family was presented with $3,000 which we were very proud of.

Choral Club News

Seaton

The balmy breeze at Seaton Star Hall carried not only the promise of spring but also the promise of more lovely lilting songs as the Seaton Choral Club met in regular practice session. The happiness of the members at the return of Mrs. Annie Jakubec to her usual station at the podium, leading them in song, was expressed in the fervor of their singing. The following were elected: President Dorothy Morris, VicePresident Helen Janacek; SecretaryTreasurer Emily Stuteville, Assistant Sec-Treasurer Lillian Mikulec, Reporter Thelma Bartosh, Song Leader Annie Jakubec and Accompanist Henry Janacek. The president appointed Martha Klusacek, Lillian Kosarek, and Georgia Sodek as historians of the Club.

The Club is considering going to the Lodge No. 88 Czech Play in Houston April 29th. Anyone interested in going on a bus to see the play is to contact one of the members. "Let's go while there are people who will perform in our beautiful Czech language."

Circle, No. 92, Fort Worth Ladies'

Dear Members and Friends: The weatherman assured us that March 20th was the official arrival of spring. However, they admitted that it was one of the coldest, although the sun was shining brightly, arrivals we have had in several years.

Since Tuesday the 13th, was our Ladies' Circle meeting day, we lined our cars up early out at North East Mall which was the agreed time and place to start our tour to visit Mary Kay's Cosmetics Co. We went in a caravan which included 21 members and 5 visitors with Florence Greer leading us. The visitors were Geraldine Roark, Helen Robinette, Imogene Reaves, Helen Brown and Rosalee Thompson.

We were taken in a shuttle bus over to the manufacturing plant from the main building where we saw how the machines packed the cosmetics, etc. Then some went upstairs to see how the various materials were mixed in huge vats.

After Mary Powers took pictures of the train and Richard Rogers, Mary Kay's son, in his office, and being kissed by Bob Roberts, a guide, and given samples of Hand and Body cream, we were taken back to the main offices.

Here another guide showed us the many offices of different officials of which, Mary Kay's was the most elaborate. Everything was decorated in pink and white. We were delighted when Mary Powers sat down at Mary Kay's desk and had her picture made with our guide. Mary Cihacek also had her picture made seated at the same desk.

Mary Kay's Cosmetics Company had just bought 178 acres of land to build a new plant more elaborate than this one.

Esta Belle Hubenak and Inez Krivanek will leave Friday the 23rd for

Lone Star Camp at LaGrange, Texas, for Leaders' SPJST Youth Clubs. We will hear more about their trip later. They plan to return

by Houston, Texas, and visit Esta Belle's daughter, Kathrine Swinford, on Sunday night.

The Easter egg hunt for SPJST Lodge No. 92 has been postponed until Sunday, April 15th, 1984, so bring your eggs and have fun.

The hostesses for April are Agnes Merlick, Elizabeth Gregory, Evelyn Williams and Mary Hale.

Friendship Club of Fort Worth Dear Members and Friends, The March meeting was called to order by President Marie Tesar with 22 members and eight guests present. We were delighted to have new members, Elma Anderson, Ruth Nisle and Anna Johnson join our club.

The birthday members were Maria Prill, Homer Johnston, Carrie Milan, Vernon Prichard and Jo Prochaska.

Many thanks to Maria Prill and Josephine Bugaj for their generosity for the German chocolate candy and handmade baby quilt donated to the club to be used for a sale. Mollie Walker was winner of the candy and Ailene Kercho of the baby quilt.

In May the club is planning to attend the Omni Theater in the Ft. Worth Museum of Science and History. This excursion will take place after our meeting and luncheon May 2nd. I highly recommend this theater, so if you have any questions you can contact me. Group rates are available for 25 or more, but a two-week notice is required.

Congratulations to Ann Belota, daughter of Joan and Alfred Belota and granddaughter of Annie and Louis Belota, for winning an Ann Brannon Student Recognition Award in Math and a Texas Wesleyan College Book Award.

March 11th, SPJST Lodge No. 84 in Dallas celebrated its 74th anniversary. It was good seeing Tracy and Jesse Hajek from Seymour and Georgia (Becan) Mihelich from Chicago at this celebration. Georgia, her brother, Johnny, and his wife, Geraldine, had just returned from a week's vacation in Hot Springs, Arkansas. We had a good visit with Georgia before she departed from D/FW Airport for Chicago.

We were indeed sorry to hear that Ben Beseda had returned to the Methodist Hospital in Dallas, because of another leg infection. We wish him a speedy recovery.

Since Easter is the 4th Sunday of April this calendar year, most of the schools will have their spring breaks in March. This change will prevent our son, Tony, wife, Kathy, and our three grandsons, Matthew, Daniel and Timothy from being with us at the Annual Easter picnic here on the farm. Instead, they have planned a flight and a 5 day sight seeing trip to Disney World in Florida this week.

We would like to continue this policy at the June convention. The Finance Committee has set a guide for the assistance of judging these cases: 1. The member who needs assistance must submit his/her name to the local lodge officers, who, in turn, will review the case.

2. The letter must explain why he/she needs assistance.

3. The letter must be signed by the local lodge president and secretary.

4. The letter must be mailed to the Finance Committee no later than May 10, 1984. Letters postmarked after May 10th WILL NOT be considered. various announcements on upcoming activities for the spring and summer have appeared in the Vestnik now for some time, I think it appropriate to remind all those concerned - youth leaders, assistants, DYCs, youth and parents - about the events that concern all of us in the Youth Department.

First of all, notice the listing of District Training Classes, YADs, and Camps that appears in this section.

Then the climax of the youth year is the State YAD which is set for Sunday, August 12th, at Temple High School. This year this will include the royalty competition. The dates and details on all these activities have been appearing for some time. We all know there are many functions and activities that solicit your time, energies and participation, but we ask that you allot a proportionate part of your time to SPJST youth activities. As I

Third Quarterly Report Dear Members: Reports for the third youth quarter for the months of December, January, and February have been received and reimbursements sent to the participating clubs. Out of 43 youth clubs 26 sent in a report, 16 are being listed as "No Report", and one youth club sent in a report but did not have enough members attending to qualify.

The deadlines for each quarter appear at the top of your quarterly report sheets, so there should be no question as to the deadline. These funds are intended to help the youth clubs finance whatever activities they choose. A total of 26 checks (19 last quarter). The average monthly attendance was 363.31 (254.99 last quarter). These are modest increases in all three areas.

have said many times before, we are only part of the "pie" and we realize there are other organizations striving to develop our young people. It takes the combined efforts of a lot of people and organizations to try to fulfill the aspirations of our youth. We are doing what we can and we realize that we cannot do it all.

Check the dates and information and be a part of these events. In many instances there are a lot of nice prizes involved, including monetary prizes. However, aside from the monetary prizes there is always the "prize" of having the experience of competing. It is, in a sense, a learning process.

Remember that a winner never quits and a quitter never wins!

There were twenty members and one visitor present.

Under new business, we discussed about going on a summer outing.

Youth Club members are to think about where they and their parents would like to go and when to go. At the next meeting, April 11th, we will decide and vote on where we are going and which certain date.

The youth members are selling candy bars to make money to go on the summer outing. We are selling three kinds of candy: caramel, crunch and almond; they are 50e each.

Birthday celebrants in March are for Christy Marek (March 10th) and

Kristie Waits (March 23rd). Happy Birthday to them!

Lucky winners of the door prizes were Steve Bruggrnan and Kim Schneider.

Brother Prasek was born at MontFEATURES serat in Lavaca County, Texas, 20 July 1893 to the late Frank and Josephine Jurach Prasek. The family moved to the Arnold Community near Hobson, Texas, where Brother Prasek studied blacksmithing in Felix Pustejovsky's blacksmith shop. He opened his own shop in Karnes City in 1912, and, in 1923, moved his business to Poth, Texas, retiring from active business a few years ago.

He was married to Miss Agnes Machicek in St. Boniface Catholic Church, Hobson, Texas, 23 November 1915. To this union two daughters were born. His family remembers the loving care he gave them, and his fellowmen the assistance he offered to those in need. To SPJST he gave long years of service, often acting as an assistant sales representative. He received his 50-year membership pin in 1962, and, though not a charter member of Keisha Grossman Lodge 93, he was one of their first new members.

A Rockdale Works Alcoan recently implemented an idea that won't make burnoffs any more pleasant, but it will make them less costly.

Blacksmith Daniel Marek, a 20year Alcoan, decided there had to be a better way to manufacture the heavy steel tongs used to pull a burnoff from a pot.

The tongs Rockdale has used for years were cut from steel p late and welded together in no less than seven places. Repairs usually involved still more welding. Marek's design involves forming the two parts of the tongs from a solid bar of hot rolled steel. Only two welds are involved in the apparatus. What's more, the entire steel bar is used in the manufacturing process, nothing is wasted.

Marek explained he got the idea after seeing one too many tongs come back for repair. "We've been fixing these things for years and I thought, I can come up with a better design than that, so I did."

The key to his invention is a steel "bending fixture," a mold in the shape of the tong parts, which he developed. It took him about a half a day to come up with the right combination of curves and angles to make the fixture produce tongs that were perfectly suited to a carbon block.

Once the bending fixture had been perfected, he simply had to soften a steel bar in a furnace, twist it around the fixture, and voila! His tongs were in business. It now takes him (or one of the other four smiths in the plant) about two hours to complete the parts for one assembly.

Maintenance supervisors say Marek's innovation results in less scrap and fewer repairs. It all adds up to better use of our resources and significant cost savings for Rockdale Works.

Poll Gives Br. Kubiak 43 to 19 Lead in Congressional Race Bryan, Tx.- Dan Kubiak, Democratic candidate for the 6th Congressional District, today released the results of a poll of likely voters in the district which gave him a commanding 43 to 19 lead over his principle opponent.

"The results of this poll indicate the people of the 6th Congressional District want a Congressman who has a strong record of legislative service, who is concerned about the quality of education of our children and the economic well-being of all the citizens of this district," Kubiak said.

The poll, conducted by Opinion Analysts of Austin, was taken from 601 potential Democratic Primary voters. It was conducted from February 2 through February 10.

production costs in many areas of Texas and other states, according to Dr. Thomas J. Gerik, agronomist for the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station at the Blackland Research Center.

However, crop yields are generally lower when such practices are applied to poorly drained soils.

Crop germination, emergence, and early growth are reduced by lowered temperatures in soils with high moistures.

This is predominately a soil problem, according to Gerik, because established plants will root deeper in response to interdependent soil warming and moisture losses, later in the season.

An associated problem is crop waterlogging from high-intensity rains, especially on areas where surface drainage is poor. Such cold, wet soil problems occur throughout the major silt-and-clay soil cropping areas of the United States, which constitute about two-thirds of Texas and about the same percentage of the U.S. Conservation tillage systems have enough potential benefits to make even skeptics take .a second look, Gerik says. They can not only reduce labor, machinery, investments, and field power requirements, but they can also improve timeliness of operations, reduce seedling diseases, and control runoff and erosion.

"But without all components of a cropping system being mutually beneficial, the system will not be successful," according to Gerik.

"We suggest that conservation tillage systems built around the use of permanent wide beds, may accomplish what others have failed to do and could be the missing key to using conservation tillage in areas where it's not presently practical.

"Our own research in this area with Dr. John E. Morrison, Jr. has led us to conclude that permanent wide beds may be the appropriate technology needed to complete many conservation tillage cropping systems. While not ready to recommend this as a practice for producers, TAES scientists are looking into this approach to enhance productivity and reduce erosion.

"The wide beds we're researching consist of slightly raised cropping strips between widely-spaced furrows. The beds can be either flat topped or slightly crowned.

"Beds are formed across the general slope and nicely fit into parallel terraced field plans. The bedded furrows allow for controlled surface drainage onto grassed water-ways."

Bedded soil surfaces, protected by conservation tillage crop residues, are relatively free from sheet erosion caused by massive movement of water traveling downslope.

This protection prevents surface crop residues, herbicides, and nutrients from being washed away.

Together, conservation tillage and wide beds will enhance the effectiveness of one another to control soil erosion.

Maximum benefits will be derived from the wide bed system if it can be left in place, year after year. The beds may need to be repaired or rebuilt periodically, depending on soil type and tillage procedures.

Exceptions to this, Gerik says, are

areas where furrow irrigation and furrow diking (basin tillage) are practiced. In this situation, furrows may need to be annually cleaned of old crop residue to enhance water flow down the furrows and to have furrow dikes rebuilt to improve entrapment of runoff.

Benefits could be similar to those for ridge-planting systems but with even less soil manipulations and more management flexibility in selection of row spacings and use of maximum soil residues.

Another possible advantage, Gerik says, is that using conservation tillage with wide beds would automatically confine wheel traffic to the furrows. Over time, the furrows will become very compacted while the cropping area stays free of compaction.

This would automatically save energy in at least three ways: 1) tractor rolling resistance is reduced by as much as 44% when running in compacted furrows, as compared to being in tilled soil, 2) the cropping strips are free from compaction and require reduced pull forces for tillage, and 3) the tillage area is reduced about 20% by the presence of untilled furrows.

This means, Gerik says, that the same acreage can be cropped with lower fuel costs and lower-powered tractors than with conventional tillage.

Dual rear tires are not necessary for flotation or traction. If no-till conservation tillage systems are used with wide beds, then reduced draw-bar power is required for pulling only slot planters, grain drills, fertilizer application knives, and bedding machines.

Hence, tractor size becomes more dictated by the adequacy for transporting attached machines and carrying large tanks of fertilizer or herbicides than by drawbar power needs.

Wet weather will not necessarily curtail cultural practices and machine mobility on compacted furrows. Higher soil density in the furrow will allow excess water to drain from compacted furrows, for faster surface drying.

Crops could then be rescued from weed or insect invasions in a more timely manner.

"The construction of wide beds could be done to conform with the individualized needs of each farmer," Gerik says.

"We are using 13.3-footwide planters and 40-footwide sprayers on 80-inch-wide beds. Row spacing has varied from 2 rows per bed, spaced 40 inches apart, to 8 rows per bed, spaced 8 inches apart.

"Normally, we plant either three 27-inch or four 16-inch rows of corn, sorghum, or cotton and eight 8-inch rows of wheat on each bed.

"We think that dryland crop production will be the major user of permanent wide beds. Row crops and possibly solid-seeded crops, such as cereals and beans, are the prime candidates for this system.

"The wide beds would not work for conventional hay production.

The effect of animal grazing on bed shape endurance is unknown.

"As I said earlier, we're not yet ready to recommend this practice for widespread adoption by producers because we don't have all the answers and feel that research is (Continued on Page 15)

"However, on the basis of our ongoing research we must admit that no-tillage crop production on wide beds may be a workable component of a total conservation tillage system for cold, wet, high clay and silt soils.

"It may bring conservation tillage, or even no tillage, to many soils which are presently unacceptable for the practice because flat planting and uncontrolled traffic compaction is being used with unconventional notillage.

"I'll admit that our research and demonstration experience is very limited but the benefits mentioned are of such potential to merit much wider thought and experimentation," Gerik concluded.
