Larry Bravenec Receives Ph.D. Larry Bravenec received a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Delaware in December of 1983. In the completed dissertation a molecular model is presented for the viscoelastic (time dependent. mechlinical) properties of polymeric t, solids (for ( xitmple cured resin materials, rubber, plastics). This favorite song is generally sung by a standing audience, often mistaken as the State song of Texas.

Origin of this song is very interesting. William L. Prather who served as president of the University of Texas from 1899 to 1906, often told the students that, the "The eyes of Texas are upon you." He once addressed the student body, telling them that, on one occasion during the Civil War, a body of soldiers from Texas marched up to be reviewed by General Robert E. Lee. The commanding officer was to have given the warning: "Forward, soldiers of Texas, the eyes of General Lee are upon you."

One year a university minstrel show presented a program. In pranking mood, knowing that President Prather would be present, the students sang a song, composed

by John Sinclair, in which the phrase, "The eyes of Texas are upon you," had been used. The words had been adopted to the tune of "I've Been Working on the Railroad." The words and the tune caught and spread like a prairie fire. Soon it was adopted as the University song and is now a popular song on public occasions throughout the state.

District V Spring Meeting is this Sunday, March 11th. Convention Reports Dear Brothers and Sisters, Especially Delegates:

Pursuant to Article 3(d) of our bylaws, it has been decided that the reports referred to in that article will all appear in the Vestnik issue dated April 18, 1984.

Article 3(d) states: (CONVENTION) "Receives and acts on all reports filed individually by every member of the Supreme Lodge, and all committees, which must be published in the organ of the Society two (2) months before the convention. Directors may make one joint report if they so agree." The secretaries and chairpersons of our standing committees — Insurance, By-Law, Finance, and Publication, and members of the Supreme Lodge have been notified to this effect and that these reports need to be sent to Editor Sefcik sometime during the week before (week of April 9th) and as early that week as possible. If any of them have their reports ready earlier than that, the editor would appreciate receiving them.

From the Vice President's Office S.F.M. McBride held dinner/seminars at Brenham and Bryan along with District I Director Ben Trcalek for the active sales representatives in District I. Of the 35 producing sales representatives in District I, 18 were in attendance at these seminars. We appreciate the efforts of these sales representatives and urge those who are not active to come join us aboard the SPJST train. We are moving on to bigger and better things — "Don't be left behind".

It is the lodge's and member's duty to support the sales representatives of your lodge and to help them secure new members in order to keep your lodge alive and growing.

District II Spring Meeting District II President D. I. Bohac has announced the regular District II spring meeting for Sunday. March 25, 1984 at 2 p.m. at the Holland SPJST Lodge 80 Hall.

The spring meeting will include the business of electing new officers and a discussion of the State Convention. This will be a good time for members to offer their viewpoints.

Cash door prizes will he awarded to some of the youth and that prize will be doubled if the youth is participating in the program to he presented.

A -free meal will he served to those who register for the meeting.

Members are asked to bring a salad or dessert.

District II members are especially urged to attend to carry on the business and enjoy the fellowship.

Dear SPJST By-Laws Committee: As a member since 11 June 1911, I come to you with the proposal to change the format of the Official Organ Vestnik (Herald), to the magazine form; it served satisfactorily from 1st of January 1916 to 1 January 1941. With the surplus and solvency, we can afford to have the Vestnik in a magazine form, better quality printing paper and add four pages. The Vestnik is our spokesman and mirror.

The change made in the XXIIIrd State Convention at San Antonio, Texas, in my opinion, it was a step backward.

May I hope to see this proposal taken into consideration in the meeting held February 18, 1984.

Lodge 13, Dime Box February Meeting Results Dear Readers: Lodge 13, Dime Box, had their regularly scheduled meeting.

President Claude. Flippin called the meeting to order at approximately 2:10 p.m.

Flag Bearer Penny Spitzenberger then led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

We had six officers present and seven absent. There were 34 persons present at our February meeting.

Sister Magdelene Iselt read the minutes of our January meeting, due to the absence of our secretary, Sister Dorothy Raeket. Doris Balcar gave the treasurer's report, and Sister Magdelene Iselt gave the financial secretary's report; all of these reports and minutes were approved and accepted as read.

President Claude Flippin read letters from the Supreme Lodge; these letters explained the position and job of the sales representatives.

Lodge 13, Dime Box, is proud to have Sister Mildred Horak as our lodge representative. Sister Mildred Horak, congratulations for a job well done!

In new business Sister Magdelene Iselt has resigned her position as a convention delegate of our lodge; the position will go to the first alternate, Father Isidore Rozicki.

The SPJST Convention is June 1721, 1984 in Corpus Christi.

A discussion was held about the hall the band leases for practice; certain people have been complaining about the hand disturbing the peace.

Brother Frank Balcar made a suggestion, after much discussion on this matter; he said that the lodge should get some legal advice from the lodge's lawyer, before we do anything wrong or illegal.

District I Director Brother Ben Trcalek visited our lodge to explain about the letter that we received from the Supreme Lodge and about the upcoming convention. He also reminded everyone about the District I meeting which will he held April 29, 1984 in Bryan.

Meeting Held For Lodge 18, Elgin February

The February meeting was called to order by President Morris Boutwell.

Brother George Diebel led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Secretary Sister Doris Brian called the roll and one officer was absent.

Minutes of the January meeting were read and approved.

Letter of appreciation for sales representatives was read. We would like to recognize Jeanette Peterson, Jenelle Mogoyne, Evelyn Gustafson and Jerry Haisler for a job well done. A debt of gratitude was expressed by President Morris Boutwell.

All committee reports were given and accepted.

March 3rd we had scheduled a magician "The Great Scott" and a clown show for 1 1/2 hours at 7:30 p.m.; admission for adults at $1.50 and children under 11 for $1.

Sister Bernice Klotz is still recuperating from a fall. We hope to see you out and about soon!

Brother Anton Mogoyne thanked all for the cards, calls and visits during his recovery from a recent accident; glad to see you up and alert!

Our sympathy to Sister Pat Young of the death of her mother.

Auditing Committee reported that all books are in good order.

Lodge No. 80, Holland Seems there is, in every organization, some members who are always outstanding, whatever the situation and the Pajestkas family is just that. No matter what, they are always ready with a helping hand. Never an excuse as you so many times hear when you ask someone to help.

The Pajestkas have been, for years, in charge of the kitchen and they are doing a Fantastic job of it and also of cleaning the hall after whatever activities we have at the lodge. No matter what is needed to be done, they are always on hand.

(That includes BINGO).

There are many members and non-members who have been very Helpful and deserve thanks and praise, but doing such special effort deserves a "Plaque of Appreciation" now, instead of sending flowers saying how we miss you. `God Bless You'!

Lodge 84, Dallas To Observe 74th Anniversary

In the absence of hall rental report, Brother Emil Petr, who was sick with the flu, his wife, Sister Bessie gave the report. We hope Brother Emil is better because we miss him.

Two dates stand out: March 11 — Our 74th anniversary with a dinner and afternoon activities being planned. It's your lodge's birthday!

Doors will open at 11:30 a.m., dinner served at 12:30 p.m.. program at 2 p.m. including "Brother and Sister" award, youth participation, Dallas CzeCh Singers, presenting and pinning 50-year membership pins, not to mention visiting with brothers and sisters that you haven't seen since the 73rd birthday. The dinner will consist of pork roast and country sausage with all the trimmings, plus drink and dessert. Our ladies are asked to please bring pastry for this occasion.

Our lodge monthly meeting is scheduled for March 19th; please come!

Saturday, March 10 we have the John Sullivan Orchestra playing ballroom music, so remember the dress code for this type of dance.

Also, remember, Birthday Club meets Wednesday, March 7 for their social consisting of card party and luncheon at 12 noon; come have lunch with us; also for March 14th, the Birthday Club meeting and lunch. I hope to see you all there.

I got the news that Mrs. Cecelia Klecka is very ill in the Polly Ryon Hospital in Rosenberg. Let's try to remember her in our prayers.

I understand that Mr. and. Mrs. Henry Kite's 50th wedding anniversary was a big success. We had to miss it because we didn't get back in town in time for the occasion. I also understand Rosalee Kostom got to make it. I'm sure it was nice to have you back among us.

Arlene Marshall, Pearl Hanka's only daughter, has come in and she and Pearl went to see Grandma Hanka at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 11 at Needville. Pearl said that.

Grandma was doing fine. (Hi. Grandma Hanka, we miss you at Lodge 88. Keep up the good work and stay fine.) From the sound of Pearl's voice she is enjoying daughter and grandba by's visit.

Now something for the good news: it seems that Helen and King Hegwood will he gaining two sonsin-law, this year; first Vivian got an engagement ring and now, David Hueble has given Vicki Hegwood an engagement ring; hopefully, with a date set for September 16th. That's nice to enlarge your family with two nice young men in one year.

I don't have too much news; I've been under the weather: first from a drug reaction and then a cold so I didn't feel like doing anything, however, I understand that Frances Olexa is doing much better and I think mostly all are doing better. too. Thank God for that!

The Czech Play actors are in full swing rehearsing, so mark your calendar for April 29th and plan to have lunch and see the play. After all, these actors have put in time practicing to entertain you, so let's be there to enjoy it and let them know that we are behind them and support them. LET'S ALL MEET THERE APRIL 29TH! I understand that The Drumettes had a very nice dance for the Cripple and Burn Children's Hospital; I hope you made some money!

Dear Editor, Members and Friends: I have been a member of Lodge 97 since childhood but, I am sorry to say, this is the first time I have written a letter in the Vestnik.

Thanks to the urging of our member, Sister Vlasta Baros, I agreed to try, so bear with me.

We, of Lodge 97, held our regular monthly meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, February 13th. Our meetings are held in the home of Millie Stubbs this year. Last year they were held in my home.

The meeting was called to order by our President Dorothy Elsik.

Minutes were read and approved as read.

We had two very welcomed guests attend our meeting; namely, District VI Director Matt Vanek (a member of Lodge 32), and State Field Manager Mr. Silas Smith. We appreciated their visit to our lodge and wish to thank them for coming and showing such interest in us.

After our meeting was over, Vlasta Baros, Millie Stubbs and I furnished refreshments, and we had a very delightful time of fellowship with the two of them.

In our December meeting we elected our delegate for the upcoming XXIV Convention to be held in Corpus Christi. We elected Mrs. Vlasta Baros as our delegate and Inez Stavarek as our substitute.

Mrs. Baros has gone to the conventions as delegate several times before and has always enjoyed the whole experience and came away with much information.

We have received a 50-year pin from the Supreme Lodge for our longtime member, Marcus Bravenec. We will present it to him in our regular March meeting.

It is so nice for spring to be around the corner, for the greening to begin to show up in nature after the severe winter we have had around Christmas and January.

There are so many plants gone; it should make for an interesting and beautiful spring with all the new planting of fresh plants. am wishing each and everyone of you the best in the coming year.

Dear Members and Friends: Just a reminder of our next meeting Sunday, March 11 at 2 p.m.

We want to wish a speedy recovery to Carrie Ann Cleveland who had knee surgery yesterday from an injury she got while skiing with her parents, Brother Bobby and Sister Carolyn Cleveland. We were sorry to hear Mary Picha is back in the hospital and wish her well. Brother Bill Renfro will have eye surgery and best wishes for a successful operation.

We extend our sincere sympathy to Brother Jack Hattendorf and family on the loss of his brother-inlaw. May he rest in peace.

- We extend our congratulations to a couple of our young members, who competed for Sokol Fort Worth in Abilene: Josh Milan won first place all-around, he is the son of Brother Frankie and Sister Martha Milan and to Kelly Hill who won second allaround. Kelly, also won second allaround last Saturday in a meet at Bedford. She is the granddaughter of Parker and Sister Ella Davis.

Sokol Fort Worth won the Team Trophy at this meet.

172, Pasadena Elects Delegates

At the last lodge meeting we had a good turnout but could have used more attendnace. We had Sister Thelma Hrncir, District VII director, to present a "Child AbuseNeglect" program, which was real good and enlightening; with her were two other ladies, namely, Judy Hay from the Department of Human Resources who spoke on the role of her department; she also showed slides plus responsibilities of citizens. Anyone who knows of child neglect or abuse and doesn't report it is liable for charges brought against them. Sister Thelma Hrncir spoke on the role of SPJST in this program.

Joy Kirby (a foster parent) spoke on what she does for children in the program and how many she cares for and has cared for; also, if any of you would like to he foster parents contact your local Department of Human Resources. We also had District V Director Louis Hanus to speak on the same subject.

We also had election of delegates to the convention. They are Jerry Dressler, Albert Risinger, Joe Krenek, and Vlasta Machann is alternate delegate. If we can acquire more members, we can send one more delegate; so all you sales representatives stay with it!

All you members, don't forget about our barbecue dinner and dance Sunday, March 25, 1984; it's FREE to Lodge 172 members and $5 to others, so bring your friends.

The music for the dance will he by The Texas Brew, a good country/western band. Dinner will be served from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m., and the dance will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. See you there!

While I am writing these lines that north wind is howling and it is getting cooler so winter isn't over with, yet.

Czech Dramatic Club "Hlahol" of Lodge 88.

We invite everyone to come enjoy a Czech comedy at SPJST Lodge 88, Houston. As was previously announced, the Czech Dramatic Club Hlahol will be presenting a hilarious comedy entitled, "Brides For Sale", April 29th.

The title suggests the difficulty in marrying off a daughter or daughters. Many married men, soon after marriage, find themselves in a cage, and the dream of paradise in their marriage often turns into a nightmare. Our main actor, upon finding out that his "beloved darling" is going on a vacation, breathes a sigh of relief, and, immediately thereafter, opens a marriage broker office to attract prospective grooms for his stepdaughters.

To his misfortune, his one customer turns out to be his former girlfriend. She soon recognizes the marriage broker as her former lover, and the one who promised her marriage. On top of all this, the wife returns from her vacation. The end result is that there is chaos in the household.

In order to better enjoy all the details and hilarious action, you must mark your calendars for Sunday, April 29th at 2 p.m. at Lodge 88, Houston. There will be excellent Czech musical entertainment by the Kovanda band before the play and during the intermissions.

Please make arrangements already now by setting aside April 29th. Come to Lodge 88, Houston, meet old friends who will be coming from near and far, and spend the afternoon being entertained by fine music and a delightfully funny play.

We would like to continue this policy at the June convention. The Finance Committee has set a guide for the assistance of judging these cases: 1. The member who needs assistance must submit his/her name to the local lodge officers, who, in turn, will review the case.

2. The letter must explain why he/she needs assistance.

3. The letter must be signed by the local lodge president and secretary.

4. The letter must be mailed to the Finance Committee no later than May 10, 1984. Letters postmarked after May 10th WILL NOT be considered. immumm■■■••• STATEWIDE YOUTH LEADERS' RETREAT (AMENDED) Our Statewide Youth Leaders' Retreat for 1984 is set for Saturday, March 24th, and Sunday, March 25th. We will probably start around 9 a.m. Saturday morning and the retreat will be over after the noon meal Sunday.

The site of this year's retreat is Camp Lone Star near La Grange.

The facilities are very nice and we think that you will be pleased with the surroundings, which should be very conducive to the learning process. All DYC's, Assistant DYC's, Youth Leaders and Assistants, plus anyone else involved in our youth program are welcome to attend; however, this occasion is not to be considered a weekend vacation, but as a period of learning and relating. What you will learn should then be applied in your activities and work with the youth. Spouses involved with and interested in our youth are welcome.

Camp Lone Star is located southeast of La Grange. You will need to follow the sign that is alongside the highway just after you cross the iron bridge across the Colorado River going south out of La Grange on Hwy 77 and before you ascend the bluff.

There will be no meal available Friday, so if you intend to arrive Friday evening, you need to either eat beforehand or bring a light snack. Kitchen facilities will not be open Friday night. The first meal served will be breakfast Saturday morning. If you don't arrive in time for breakfast at either 7:30 or 8 a.m., your first meal will be the noon lunch Saturday.

The Supreme Lodge will pay round trip mileage for (1) car from a lodge, plus camp costs, which include all meals and lodging.

However, no mileage reimbursement will be paid for those who do not arrive in time for the start of Saturday's activities or to those who leave before noon Suday. We plan to start the day's activities at 9 a.m.

SHARP Saturday. Bring note pads and pencils. A full day and a half's activities are being planned, including some evening functions.

PLEASE — no alcoholic beverages on camp premises. This is a learning and relating experience.

Upcoming Youth Activities To All Concerned: Although the dates, places and various announcements on upcoming activities for the spring and summer have appeared in the Vestnik now for some time, I think it appropriate to remind all those concerned — youth leaders, assistants, DYCs, youth and parents — about the events that concern all of us in the Youth Department.

First of all, notice the listing of District Training Classes, Y ADs, and Camps that appears in this section.

In addition, we have the State Youth Leaders' Retreat near La Grange set for Saturday and Sunday, March 24th and 25th, and Longhorn Recreation Lab for the weekend (March 9-11th) or the weeklong session (March 11th-16th).

Then the climax of the youth year is the State YAD which is set for Sunday, August 12th, at Temple High School. This year this will include the royalty competition. The dates and details on all these activities have been appearing for some time. We all know there are many functions and activities that solicit your time, energies and participation, but we ask that you allot a proportionate part of your time to SPJST youth activities. As I have said many times before, we are only part of the "pie" and we realize there are other organizations striving to develop our young people. It takes the combined efforts of a lot of people and organizations to try to fulfill the aspirations of our youth. We are doing what we can and we realize that we cannot do it all.

Check the dates and information and be a part of these events. In many instances there are a lot of nice prizes involved, including monetary prizes. However, aside from the monetary prizes there is always the "prize" of having the experience of competing. It is, in a sense, a learning process.

Remember that a winner never quits and a quitter never wins!

The seven recreational regions of Texas can be described as the East Texas Woodlands, Gulf Coast, North Texas, Central Texas-Hill Country, South Texas-Rio Grande Valley, High Plains and Far West.

The vast East Texas Woodlands' Piney Woods is an area about equal in size to the entire forested area of the New England states. Harvest and manufacture of forest products form a large part of this area's economic base. Within this area are four national forests, four state forests and the Big Thicket National Biological Preserve. More than half of the field-grown rose bushes sold in the U.S. are produced in the vicinity of Tyler, the "Rose Capital of the World". Longview and Kilgore are oil operations centers.

Nacogdoches is one of the state's oldest cities and North Street in that city is believed to be the oldest public thoroughfare in the U.S. There are numerous lakes, museums, and forts in this area.

The Texas Gulf Coast area has many contrasts: Old and new, rural and urban, piney woods and cactus.

Petrochemical plants rise out of cotton fields. Through the port of Galveston, most emigrants to Texas arrived during the first half of the 19th century. The . - Lyndon B.

Johnson Space Center in Houston guided men to their first moon walk.

Houston is the nation's fifth-largest city and the largest in Texas. The Gulf Coast area provides many recreational choices. A few of the attractions are the Sam Houston Park with restored early homes, Museum of Natural Science, planetarium, zoological gardens, San Jacinto Battleground State Park, festive flower trails, and many others. Victoria has a grist mill built of handshaped logs. There are many museums, historic sites and wildlife refuges in this area.

North Texas can be described as a broad band of Texas southward from the Red River to the heart of the state. Three metropolitan areas in North Texas are Dallas-Fort Worth ("Metroplex"), ShermanDenison and Wichita Falls. The Dallas-Fort Worth area is made up of eleven counties. The ShermanDenison area is near Lake Texoma.

The Eisenhower Birthplace historic site is in Denison.

Central Texas-Hill Country is a land of swift, spring-fed streams, bluebonnets and other wildflowers.

Stephen F. Austin settled his first colonies in Washington and Colorado Counties. In time, German, Czech, Polish, Norwegian and other settlers came and built their homes.

This area contains the birthplace and burial site of the late President Lyndon B. Johnson. The University of Texas is located in Austin, as are many state buildings, including the Capitol. Near La Grange is Monument Hill State Park, with the final resting place of men who drew black beans of death following the Mier Expedition against Mexico.

There are many state parks, caverns, scenic drives, museums, and dude ranches, in this region.

From the District Youth Counselors Enjoyable Skating Party Held In District II The District II Skating Party went over real good. We had 146 people to attend and a majority of the leaders were present.

We were happy to have Brother and Sister Guy Hilsabeck and their young son attend. Brother Hilsabeck is the new youth leader at Lodge 187, Round Rock and we were glad that he brought his youth club children. Welcome aboard Guy, and best of luck. We also want to thank all the leaders and assistants for attending and taking time to bring the youth club members from their lodge.

District V DYC Annual Report This last year as DYC has been a most enjoyable and rewarding experience for me. I only wish that time would have allowed me to do more.

From attending meetings, visiting lodges, attending training sessions, planning and holding Youth Achievement Day, helping at State Royalty and attending camp made me more aware of our youth of today. Their needs are still the same as ours were when we were young and we have to adjust to the changing times. What we have to offer the youth is in serious competition with dance lessons, Karate lessons, school functions and Little League to name a few. We are finding ourselves working around schedules and a lot of youth are not getting the most benefit from our Society. This can be discouraging to our youth leaders and their assistants.

I am working toward certain goals to try to help with these problems. I will be discussing suggestions at our District V Meeting at Lodge 142 Houston March 11, 1984.

Finally, I would like to thank my Assistant DYC Lynn Pflughaupt for all his help, and my husband Larry for all his support and encouragement; also, District VII, who we camped with last year, for all their help and direction. This was most appreciated and to all the youth leaders and assistants of District V, thank you.

Just remember, all efforts that each individual puts forth, may it be youth, a youth leader, parent or just an interested party, we are molding the future of the SPJST. The youth will also be holding their district youth meeting that day during the regular meeting. Since we were not able to have a meeting on Family Day last October, because of all the activities, we have a lot to discuss. We will be electing new officers for the coming year.

The youth will be supplying some entertainment during the meeting by putting on a small classroom play. All youth are invited to participate. Anyone who would like to join in the fun, please contact me as soon as possible; we will begin practice, soon. There will be parts for those who will not be able to practice with us.

Following the meeting, a social is planned for all youth who attend the district meeting. Again, come join us.

SCHEDULE OUTLINED FOR LODGE 177, ACADEMY YC

Dear Readers, We have been having a busy winter in Academy. There was no time to write about our activities.

In January we had a good meeting with 18 people attending. We also had a work day in which a few of us helped wash down some walls and worked on scrapbook.

During February we have been to a Leather and Lace Dance and 20 of us went to the District II Skating Party. During our February meeting, we had a Valentine card contest.

For March we plan to have a day during spring break to spend at the hall. We will bake kolache to be sold at the Bingo that night, work on our scrapbook and have a talent contest.

In the future we will have two fund-raising dances featuring Sterling Country.

All members interested in attending our Six Flags' trip will need to help with the cleanup.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 88, Houston, Texas, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy, in behalf of our entire membership, to the family of DENNIS WEHRING, who died Friday, January 27, 1984 in Bellville, Texas nursing home.

He was born June 25, 1917 in Bleiblerville, Texas. He was the son of Theo. and Lillie Wehring. He attended school in Austin County.

He and Bernice were married April 8, 1942 in Salem Lutheran Church.

He had been a building contractor in Houston for 33 years, he was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church of Houston, a member of the Old Timer's Hall of Fame Baseball in Hallettsville, and a member of the SPJST Lodge No. 88 in Houston.

His survivors include his wife, Bernice; one daughter and son-inlaw, Donna and Ron Futch, and four granddaughters, all of Houston.

Funeral services for Brother Wehring were held Sunday, January 29, at Memorial Oaks Chapel in Brenham, Texas with Pastor Bill Derrick officiating.

MEMORIAM

We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 139, Danbury, in behalf of the entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our dear departed sister MRS. CARRIE SEBESTA, who, after a long illness, passed away Sunday, February 5, 1984 at The home of her son, Joe Sebesta.

She would have been 94 years old February 6th. Much beloved by family, neighbors, and friends, she was known to the entire community as "Grandma Sebesta".

Sister Sebesta was born in Gay Hill, Texas February 6, 1890. She was a resident of Danbury for more than 60 years and was the widow of John Sebesta, a prominent rancher and rice farmer in Danbury. She was a member of the Danbury Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, John, and a daughter, Elsie; she is survived by two sons, Eddie Sebesta of Angleton and Joe J. Sebesta of Danbury; six daughters, Mrs. Libby Amason of Brazoria, Mrs. Fannie Cothron of Angleton, Mrs. Milady Spiller of Freeport, Mrs. Lena Vickers of Lake Jackson, and Mrs. Ella Zgarba and Mrs. Olga Zgarba, both of Danbury; 29 grandchildren; 62 great-

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. $8, Houston, Texas, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest and most sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother ARNOLD RICHARD BACA. who passed away February 16, 1984 at M.D. Anderson Hospital.

He was a longtime resident of Galena Park, Texas. Mr. Baca spent most of his life teaching music and was a member of the Texas State Teacher's Association, National Educator's Association, Texas Music Educator's Association, SPJST Lodge No. 88, Local No. 65 AFL Musician's Union and past president of the Texas Bandmaster's Association.

He is survived by his wife, Gladys I. Baca; son, Daniel C. Baca of Pasadena, Teas; also a brother, John Baca of Edna, Texas.

Services were held Friday, February 17, at 4 p.m. in San Jacinto Memorial Chapel. Burial followed at San Jacinto Memorial Park Cemetery.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned Resolution Committee, in behalf of all the members of Lodge 15, Buckholts, wish to express our deepest and heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother GUY TITTLE, who passed away in a Temple hospital February 16, 1984 after a freak accident in his home the day before at the age of 73.

Brother Tittle was born 19 November 1910 in Crockett, Texas; his parents were the late J. R. and Carrie Tittle. The family moved to Milam County where Brother Tittle was a farmer in the Buckholts Community for many years.

He married Suvera White 4 December 1932 in Holland, Texas.

Brother Tittle served on the Board of Equalization for the Buckholts School District, also served on the Bell-Milam-Falls Water Organization Board which he helped organize. He served as a Buckholts constable.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Rogers, Texas, and a member of our Lodge 15, Buckholts for many years.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, February 18 at the First Baptist Church in Rogers, with Rev. Jimmy Hinton and Rev. Greim

Williams officiating. Burial was in the Holland Cemetery. SheffieldGornrnert Funeral Home of Rogers was in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors are his wife, Suvera Tittle of Buckholts; his mother, Mrs. Carrie Tittle of Bartlett; two brothers, Ray Tittle of Huron, Ohio and Billy Tittle of Lewisville; seven sisters, Edna Wells of Coleman, Emma Townsend of Bartlett, Myrtle Young of Little Rock, Arkansas, Olive Tepper of Great Neck, New York, Frances Burns of La Marque, Evelyn Haynen of Terrell and Mary Jo Minnox of College Station.

BESSIE TOBOLA, age 90, of Waco, formerly of West, passed away at 1:15 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 23 at Providence Hospital in Waco.

Mrs. Tobola was born March 29, 1893, in McLennan County. She was a housewife and belonged to SPJST Lodge No. 54 and St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West.

Mrs. Tobola gave a portion of their homeland to West Community Hospital in memory of her husband, Joe Tobola, who died in January of 1970.

She is survived by one son, Ernest Tobola of West; two daughters, Mrs. Frances Moore and Mrs. Mary Rejcek, both of Waco; four brothers, Joe Marek, Alfons Marek and John Marek, all of West, and Ben Marek of Waco; two sisters, Mrs. Lena Svacek of Ft. Worth, and Mrs. Regina Bartosh of West; nine grandchildren; 20 greatgrandchildren and two great-greatgrandchildren.

Rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m.

There are also other morale builders, who may be self-employed and who work long, late hours in their homes to catch up that they couldn't complete while being at the store waiting on customers.

Brothers and Sisters, wait a second. Do you think that all this cannot be bought in a large city? Of course it can, but there are things we have in a small town that cannot be bought anywhere else, and these are the friendly deeds and personal touch that people enjoy and feel when they obtain these services.

When you see friends and/or neighbors come to people with an

open heart to share their sorrows and joys, nothing can take their place. The touch of neighbors and friends, which brings a small town together, exists to a superlative degree in any small town. They come to individuals without hesitation or invitation to help lighten the burden and share joys or sorrows.

BRAVENEC — (Continued from page 1) aerospace and automotive applications. Larry has presented his work at an annual symposium series at the University of Delaware and at the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) 74th Annual Meeting in Los Angeles.

Prior to graduate studies Larry received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering with highest honors from The University of Texas at Austin in May of 1979. While at UT he served as Texas Alpha Chapter President of Tau Beta Pi (Engineering Honor Society) and on the Student Engineering Council. Also, he was recognized as an Engineering Scholar for four years and received the AIChE Annual Chapter Scholarship Award in 1977 and the Jessie H. Jones, Houston Endowment Scholarship in 1975.

Currently, Larry is an Associate Research Engineer at Shell Development Company, Westhollow Research Center in Houston. His research efforts include work to improve fabrication processes of "advanced composite materials" and material properties and performance. Advanced composites are constructed of glass or graphite fibers, which are embedded in a cured epoxy resin. These lightweight, high-strength materials are used in aircraft and spacecraft structures as well as industrial and automotive parts.

Dr. Bravenec is the grandson of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ad. Miculka of Floresville, Texas and the late Mr. and Mrs. John Bravenec of Temple, Texas. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Bravenec of Pasadena, Texas.

Olympic Star Draws Ooohs, Ahs From Local Crowd

Hartung took the situation in stride.

"I had really mixed emotions," the gymnast remembers. I could have cried all day but I knew that wouldn't have changed anything."

Instead of pouting or giving up his amateur status, Hartung set his sights on the '84 games. The United States team, which has traditionally trailed communist block countries in the muscular sport, has made great strides in the past few years and is now better than the Japanese, in Hartung's opinion.

The 1980 Olympic team probably would not have fared too well anyway even though they won a bronze medal at the world champions the year before, he says.

"Four out of the top six teams are Communist so their judges get together and team up. We probably would have gotten creamed as a team but the experience would have been worthwhile."

Although the six-member, 2alternate Olympic team has not been chosen, Hartung, a probable candidate, feels it has a good shot at a bronze medal. But why not shoot for the gold as most athletes do?

"Realistically we don't have a chance," he says. "It's hard for U.S. athletes to compete against the government supported Soviet or Chinese."

At first glance you might have thought the president was visiting the SOKOL Club last Sunday.

Sunday, March 18th. Here along the Texas Gulf Coast, every week the numerous varieties of wildlife are recognized, cared for and enjoyed, especially the endangered, threatened or merely unusual species.

Starting with the famous whooping cranes up at the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, other endangered or threatened species include peregrine falcons, bald eagles, brown pelicans, Kemp's ridley turtles and even a rare specie that shows up occasionally.

All 75 of the whooping cranes survived the severe winter and will be leaving in mid-April for their summer nesting grounds in Canada.

If you can't get here in time to see them at Aransas, tune in Public Television's station near you April 4th. The National Geographic Society will present "Flight of the Whooping Crane" — and you know how fine their TV specials are.

Thousands of tourists to this area come with bags packed with binoculars and field guides. Early Sunday mornings, groups gather at Bluntzer Park, right in the city of Corpus Christi, to count the numerous species of feathered friends on their spring migration.

National news was made when a sandhill crane was found with its legs amputated by a coyote trap.

Peregine falcons use the barrier island at Little Shell Beach for a feeding and resting area. Even bald eagles have been known to winter along the Laguna Madre.

Once almost disappeared from around here as elsewhere, brown pelicans are coming back. There's even a new beautiful book, "The Return of the Brown Pelicans".

Looks as if the bird sanctuary at Pelican Island will be left to the birds, even if a huge industrialresidential complex is built.

It's always a thrill for visiting motorists to drive along SH No. 35 between Aransas Pass and Rockport or on SH No. 361 on the way to the Port A ferry, to he surprised by a flock of beautiful roseate spoonbills fl y ing overhead.

Big news last year was the beaching of pygmy killer whales off Mustang Island, conveniently near

the University of Texas Marine Science Laboratory. One rescued in October was sent two days later to Sea-a-rama in Galveston. Three were beached in early December; two lived for only 48 hours. The other (nicknamed "Sugar" by TV cameramen) lived for eight days.

"We learned a lot about them" say the scientists at UT. Every out-Of-towner on the ferry goes on lookout for the porpoises that cavort in the ship channel.

Czech Ex-Teachers & Students Conference Scheduled The eleventh annual conference of the Czech ex-students and exteachers of Texas will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 24th at the SPJST Lodge No. 29 lodge home located near Taylor, Texas.

A program will be outlined consisting of guest speakers sharing ideas and experiences on a variety of Czech-related topics beginning at 2 p.m.

Other activities scheduled for the evening include a social hour at 5 p.m.; a barbecue meal to be served at 6:30 p.m., and a dance will also be held.

That was the day for gaiety. After six weeks of Lent, the time of sacrifice, came Easter Day (Hod Bai Velikonoeni), as a day of rejoicing because of Christ's Resurrection, but that still was a day full of deep religious meaning — a solemn day.

Adding of another holiday on Monday gave opportunity for more wordly signs of joy. The boys, - from toddlers to young unmarried men, were pursuing girls with gaily decorated whips made of young willow branches. The girls could avoid a "whipping" only by offering the fellows fancily-painted Easter eggs. Some were fresh eggs while the more elaborately painted ones were only shells. They were fine examples of folk art. In the Eastern part of the country, the customs called also for practical jokes like pouring of cold water over an unsuspecting victim, etc. It was not unusual to have a dance on Monday just to give an outlet to the vivacity of the people pinned up during Lent.

Another occasion for a celebration is the Namesdav or the Birthda y . In this country, one's Namesay is rarely celebrated, but in Czechoslovakia, it is put on the same level as the Birthday. On the days of popular patron saints, such as St. Joseph, St. Wenceslaus (Vitclav) or St. Anna, it is not uncommon to have bands of musicians going from one Joseph's house to another and serenading him. Also dances are often organized on the nearest Saturday and named Josefska, Vacla y ska, or Annenska zabava. The word "zabava" stands for entertainment, but is often used also to mean dance. On one's Namesday or Birthday, people are congratulated as follows. vSecko nejlepAi k svatku everything best for your Namesday vAecko nejlapAi k narozeninam everything best for your birthday Acastne a vesele narozeniny happy birthday mnoho Ste. sti, zdravi a spokojenosti good health and much happiness All the above can be preceded by "I wish you" in Czech — "Pfeji yam" or "Pfeji ti". The first is the polite and the latter the familiar form. The word "zdravi" stands for health, "§testi" for happiness, "spokojenost" for satisfaction, "narozeniny" for birthday, and "svatek" for namesday. As you can see, the above English translation of "mnoho Atesti, zdravi a spokojenosti" is not a literal one.

Learn the above phrases and use them in greeting those of your friends who know Czech. They will appreciate it.
