Throughout the years the association has made contributions for colleges, universities, homes for the aged and other charitable and patriotic purposes. The association also has supported the Czech National Council for Higher Education which has popularized higher education among Americans of Czech descent and offers scholarships for that purpose. TJC, the University of Texas at Austin and universities in Nebraska and Wisconsin are recipients of contributions by WFLA recently.

Czech scholarships are granted to students who have continued and successfully completed Czech courses of study at TJC. Since the program began more than 400 students have enrolled in some 50 Czech courses at TJC. ***

Czech Ex-Teachers & Students Conference Scheduled The eleventh annual conference of the Czech ex-students and exteachers of Texas will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 24th at the SPJST Lodge No. 29 lodge home located near Taylor, Texas.

A program will be outlined consisting of guest speakers sharing ideas and experiences on a variety of Czech-related topics beginning at 2 p.m.

Other activities scheduled for the evening include a social hour at 5 p.m.; a barbecue meal to be served at 6:30 p.m., and a dance will also be held.

Tickets for the conference, sponsored by the Czech Club of the University of Texas, may be purchased during registration.

Below are the directions to Lodge Praha No. 29: From Austin take 1-35 north, turn off at Hwy. 79 to Taylor, passing through Round Rock and Hutto, and following Hwy. 79 to signs all the way through Taylor.

by Lodge 28, East Bernard. *** Each year, millions of Americans move across country. For those with children, a successful relocation depends on finding good schools.

GRADING SCHOOLS. For many families, the quality of schools can be more important than commuting distance or the availability of shopping and recreational facilities.

But finding good schools is not an easy task.

Test scores. You can ask local administrators about standardized test results. But most are reluctant to release scores to the public.

Ask around. Seek the advice of friends, business associates, real estate agents, anyone who knows the community. Then visit some schools in the areas they recommend. The National Committee for Citizens in Education suggests these guidelines: Staff. Does the school staff set high and realistic academic goals for the students? Is the principal a strong leader?

Instruction. Is emphasis placed on instruction? Effective schools use a variety of ways to insure that all •children learn.

Discipline. Is appropriate discipline maintained? In good schools, proper behavior is expected and enforced - firmly and fairly.

Attitude. Do teachers seem to like their students and appreciate parents help? Do staff and students seem proud of the school?

Facilities. Are school facilities well lit and pleasant? Are hallways and playgrounds clean and safe? Are there separate facilities for art, music and physical education? Are there enough textbooks and other supplies? Is there a well-stocked library or multimedia learning center?

TELEPHONE WIRING. Do you need insurance on the telephone wiring inside your home? Phone companies in at least 23 states and the District of Columbia now allow customers to opt out of a monthly fee - from 21 cents to as much as 80 cents -- for maintaining the inside wiring between where it enters the home and the phone jack. But users must respond to a notice from the company to avoid the fee. If you say no and something goes wrong with the wiring, you pay the repairman.

Inside wiring accounts for just 8 percent of all problems, says one phone company.

The meaning of March brings many thoughts to a person's mind; first such as March, the first month of the Gregorian year, according to our current calendar, was considered as the first month of the year in England until the change of style some time along the way about in 1752, the regal year was reckoned from March 25th.

Another meaning of March, in music, we have a type of composition originally which was designed to stimulate and organize the marching of large groups, particularly soldiers. The rhythmic beat, therefore, has always been most important and strongly marked in all marches. The march was developed in the 17th and 18th centuries as a distinct musical form, composed in sections of four to sixteen bars, and containing a subsidiary, subdued section which alternates with the main part. In the 19th century the marches were further developed by famous composers known as Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Schubert and Wagner. At the end of the 19th century the march was popularized in the United States by John Phillip *** Sousa as a piece for concert bands.

Sousa wrote over 100 marches, MY AMERICAN CREED... including "Semper Fidelis", "The Stars and Stripes Forever", and I do not choose to be a common "Hands Across The Sea." man. Dear Brothers and Sisters: In the past the convention has provided assistance to members of the SPJST Society who were judged as hardship cases. We would like to continue this policy at the June convention. The Finance Committee has set a guide for the assistance of judging these cases: 1. The member who needs assistance must submit his/her name to the local lodge officers, who, in turn, will review the case.

2. The letter must explain why he/she needs assistance.

3. The letter must be signed by the local lodge president and secretary.

4. The letter must be mailed to the Finance Committee no later than May 10, 1984. Letters postmarked after May 10th WILL NOT be considered. The host lodge will serve a barbecue brisket dinner with all the trimmings from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Lodge 88 Choral Club and Concert Orchestra will entertain during dinner. Their performance is always most enjoyable.

The meeting will start promptly at 1:30. At least 7 cash prizes of $5 each will be given to the lucky members. Election of officers is on the agenda.

After the meeting there will be a social with the district furnishing refreshments, mixed drinks, beer, and soft drinks. District Youth Counsel or Dorothy Pflughaupt has something special for the youth - a pizza party.

It was reported by the Audit Committee that the sisters, of the lodge, donated food, coffee, tea and supplies for the kitchen and socials valued in excess of 4 times the amount spent by the lodge in 1983.

To our brothers and sisters of the lodges in District VI — The official opening of the doors at the District VI meeting will be 12 NOON but those of you who may arrive early will be welcome to come in and visit.

The location of the American Legion Hall is south of the East Bernard "City Limits" sign on State Highway 60 (Wharton Highway) and north of the "T" junction of S.H. 60 and Farm-to-Market 2919. If you are driving in from the south look for it on your right. If you are driving in from the north look for it on your left.

In recent times this writer has heard just about every excuse on the "Why" someone cannot and/or will not attend the lodge meetings.

The other day, this writer heard that a member could not come to the meeting because Sunday is the only day that this person has off and that there are more important things that need to be done than go to a meeting. This may be true — but once a month? If the meeting time and/or date do not meet your off time and/or time you would like have a meeting, start attending the meetings regularly and try to get it changed when the next annual meeting is held. With this, don't just come in to change the meeting time and/or date and then stop attending for it would be a slap in the face to those who attend regularly at the present time. They, too, have equal rights as do all members of the lodge. They make the effort to attend at the time and date set and unlike an organization that our main lodge donates money to, there are NO uniformed Police at the door keeping the opposition out. ALL MEMBERS ARE WELCOME!! As to the meetings being dull, those held by our lodge are either too short or too full of activity to be classified as dull. If a meeting is allowed to become dull then the presiding officer is at fault for not controlling things and keeping the meeting moving. Some of our meetings are quiet and some become explosive within inches of having battle lines and swords drawn. In his opinion, this writer believes there were no meetings in recent times (within the last six years) that were dull. The business portion of the meeting is taken care of as quick as possible and the socializing, after, seems to be

4/VESTNIK—Wednesday, February 29, 1984 enjoyed by all who partake. Being able to communicate with one's fellows, in both English and Czech, on just about any subject in the universe does not seem, to this writer, as a waste of one's time.

Those members who choose NOT to stay may go when they wish with no one holding anything against them.

To those of our membership still having an excuse, other than the ills of many of the older members, who, in truth, make every effort to attend but are unable to navigate the stairs, this writer wishes to borrow a line or two from the Bard, himself, Shakespeare. In Act I, Scene III of Hamlet close to the end of Polonius' oration to Laertes, "This above all, To thine ownself be true and it must follow, as the night the day, etc."

35, Elk To Meet March 11th

Dear Readers: Our February meeting was called to order by President Henry Breitkreutz, and Dawn Pavelka led us in our pledge to the flag. We then stood in a moment of silence for our departed Sister Mary Beralek. May she rest in peace, she will be greatly missed.

Secretary Rosemary Banik read the minutes of our previous meeting, which were approved. She then read notes from Helen Dulock, The March of DiMes, and a letter from Bernard Gebala.

Treasurer Eddie Banik gave a good report so did the entertainment, bar and building chairmen.

Youth Leader Rosemary Banik reported that 10 youth members were present for their meeting, and that they discussed the coming YAD, also stated that a cake walk is to be held Saturday, March 3rd.

The lodge books have been audited and are in good standing; also an inventory had been taken and all checked out good.

The purchase of new chairs for the hall was discussed. Samples are to be brought to our next meeting, at which time, chairs are to be purchased.

Our membership gave approval to have work done on our ceiling and roof of the hall.

Louise Burney is to be our new sales representative, with the approval of the Supreme Lodge; so, we will be looking forward to some new members, Louise.

Converted to adult policies were Melissa Steinke and Cynthia Schiller.

Adult door prize was won by Johnny Stuchly, and child's prize by Melissa Burney.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Ernest Banik, Marilyn Sykora, Melissa Burney.

A drawing was held for two beautiful Valentine pots of flowers; they were won by Richard Lee Burney and Erwin Dieterich. They each now had posies to give loved ones for Valentine's Day. After the meeting, all had a

chance to play a game for boxes of Valentine candy, and there were quite a few happy winners.

Those of you who were not present, for our meeting, sure missed out on a delicious stew, which had been prepared by Sister Rosemary Banik for supper.

I can vouch, that we always have great "vittles" at our meetings.

Before I close this report I'd like to say "Hi" to Joe George, who I'm told always looks forward to reading the Vestnik, and to see if there is anything from Lodge No. 35.

40 Approves Donation To Many Scholarship Funds

Dear Vestnik Readers and Friends, The monthly meeting of the El Campo-Hillje Lodge 40 was held Wednesday, February 15, 1984, at 7:30 p.m.

The meeting was called to order

by President James Kulcak, who then lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a minute of silent prayer for all our dear departed members.

All officers were present for the roll call. Secretary Laverne Bacak read the minutes of the previous meeting which needed some minor revision.

President Kulcak read a note of thanks from the Country Dance Club for the donation of a lounge lawn chair for their November raffle.

They have since disbanded and will not be using the hall. There was also a letter from Supreme Lodge President Nick Morris. He enjoyed his visit with us at the Christmas party and installation of officers.

New applicant for membership was Lariet Weston Girndt. Welcome Lariet!

Treasurer Leona Macha reported on all bank and money market accounts. After all expenses and taxes were paid, we are still financially sound.

First Vice President Benny Reck had some response on the bids for the new addition, but they needed floor plans before bidding on the work. Home Lumber is presently drawing and setting bids.

Some of the profits from the weekly bingo games will be given to the scholarship funds of the Louise and El Campo schools. Five scholarships of $200 each will go to each of the schools.

Donation will also be given to the Louise and El Campo Fire Departments of $100 each.

Sister Rita Vanek brought up the need for fire extinguishers. The purchase of two 10 lb., one 5 lb. and one 10 unit first aid kit is planned for as soon as possible.

Sister Rita Vanek, on the XXIV Convention Finance Committee, reminded delegates who have received their credentials to get their hotel reservations in as soon as possible to be insured of a place to stay while in Corpus Christi. Also if there are any recommendations regarding finances members would like to have presented please contact her. Any member who wishes

to submit the name of a member in need of assistance can also contact her. Delegates will have to wait for an article in the Vestnik after April 1st to find out what they will be paid.

Sister Leona Macha, on the Bylaw Committee, says all recommendations will be published in the Vestnik before convention time, so be on the lookout for any changes.

We were so pleased to welcome Director. Brother Matt Vanek District VI and State Field Manager, Brother Silas Smith. Brother Smith will be in our area for about two months and invites any insurance representative, who needs assistance, to contact him. He will be glad to help in any way. He reminded us that the lodge is as good as its sales representatives, and we do have some good ones!

Christi Lodge 79 February Meeting Corpus

The meeting was called to order

by President Veselka, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag and a moment of silence in memory of our departed Sister Elsik.

Roll call of officers showed all present except Honorary President Bro. Stasa who has been in the hospital. Our guests included Helen Pavelka, and Bill Marek, our District VII president from Robstown.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.

Secretary Munson also read a letter from the Home Office stating that we have several members receiving their 50-year pins this year. They are Ted Stasney, Ruby Kucera, Annie Mary Sacky, Frank Sijansky, Olga Mokry and Venuse Kucera.

Our treasurer reported our balance and also that a separate convention account has been set up.

Financial Secretary Milly Elzner gave her report on the mortuary account and stated that we had one new member and two add-ons of existing policies. Our new member is Malise Anne Tepera, daughter of Gary and Janet Tepera of Denver, Colorado, and granddaughter of Peggy Tepera. The policy was written by Br. Jerry Elzner. The agent for the add-ons was Bro. Frank C. Sacky.

In other committee reports Audit Chairman Judy Majek indicated the audit has been brought up-to-date and is in order. The next audit is set for July.

Youth Club Leader Kay Majek reported that they are meeting regularly with a fairly good attendance at each meeting. She reported that at their last meeting they made Smile-O-Grams for their sick and shutin. She also reported that the tickets for the quilt that

would be given away the week of the convention will be ready this week.

Convention Committee Chairman Monta Foster reported that the committee is working hard and meeting regularly and answered any questions from the members in attendance about some of the plans and schedules.

Under new business it was voted that Lodge 79 host the spring District VII meeting and the date was set for April 1st. We will present the 50-year pins at that time.

The meeting was adjourned at 8 p.m. Our next meeting will be March 14th.

80, Holland To Host District II Meeting

Dear Members and Friends of SPJST: Our regular monthly meeting was held Sunday, February 5th. The meeting was called to order at 2 p.m.

by President D. I. Bohac.

The pledge to our flag was recited by the members present. Our lodge president then asked the members to remain standing for a moment of silence to our deceased members.

The president welcomed all the members present at our meeting.

Roll call of officers showed all present.

Minutes from our January meeting were approved as read by Secretary Latham.

Reports from our kitchen, bar, dance floor and bingo were real good.

The Building Committee reported that a new roof was installed on the south part of the hall, which was beginning to leak.

On the sick list from our lodge, we had Brother Glen Latham, our secretary-treasurer, who was hospitalized for nearly 2 weeks. I was informed he has returned to his home, and is doing well. We, the members of Lodge 80, wish you a lasting recovery, Glen.

Mrs. Marvin Kropp, also of our lodge has been in a Temple hospital recently; we wish for her a speedy recovery.

I would like to mention, that we, at Lodge 80, are hosting the District II meeting at our lodge Sunday, March 25th. I don't have the exact time, however, I imagine around 1:30 or 2 p.m. The president of the district is our local president, Brother D. I. Bohac. He and the members of Lodge 80 cordially invite all the members of District II to come and spend an enjoyable evening. A meal will be served after the meeting. I am also taking this opportunity to invite the Supreme Lodge officers to come.

There was no further business, so the meeting adjourned at 3 p.m. to meet again Sunday, March 4th at 2 p.m. when 50-year membership pins will be awarded to Brother Joe Zajicek and Sister Rudy Grossman at our March meeting.

Lodge 88, Houston News Dear Members: Our Lodge 88's 19th anniversary was a nice one once the rain stopped and the sun came out. I think everyone present had a nice time.

We had 35 fine folks who donated nice things to the wheel booth that the Dramatic Club and Choral Club had. Here are the donors' names: Mary and Susan Schenburn, Mary Tilich, Annie and Robert Grissom, Frank and Emilia Sebek, Helen Kubick, Helen and King Hegwood, Melvin and Elsie Post, Mr. Les Simpson (Krogers Store), Mr. and Mrs. Larry Green, Bernice Wahlberg, Naomi and Arnold Spencer, Elsie Rozner, the bar, Erma O'Conner, Edna Wehring, Frank L. Tilich, Irene Slovacek, Konander, Louis and Oleta Hanus, Pearl Hanka, Stacie and Bennie Kocich, Marie Stayton, Agnes Pederson, Agnes Cheyney, Millie Manack, Margaret and Fred Miko, Della Kadlecek, Evelyn Vornsand, Ernest and Margie Anders, Birdie Pech, Frank Seller; and last, but not least, Vincent Hegwood who fixed us a very nice sign. Thanks, again, to all you nice people!

It looks like one of our members, Mr. Joe and Mrs. Delores Fenndell will increase their family; their daughter, Cindy, will marry Gregg Cicchetti in June. It seems that Delores and Joe will have an anniversary February 24th and they will have daughters, Linda Janny, Debra Fitzhenry and Cindy and Karen Fenndell helping them. I hope you have a nice anniversary.

Poor Mary Johnson had her car stolen while she was working in her garden; someone broke in and stole her watch and some jewelry, but thank God that her arm is out of the cast.

Well, here's the sad news; it seems we have a lot of sick folks: Georgia Zaludek called and told me her son-in-law, Jerry Forbis, was in the hospital who had back surgery February 6th at St. Luke's Hospital.

He is ready to go home to his wife, Georgia (Tunie), and children, Daniel and Jeri Lynn, but the doctor said that Jerry has to wait a little longer.

At the meeting, it was announced that Mr. Baca was to be in M. D. Anderson Hospital. Mr. William Souchek is back on our sick list, also Florena Taake was on the sick list.

Mary Kosut was reported on the sick list. Lillian Finn, Rosalee Kostom, Margaret Liebscher are reported to be on the mending list at home out of the hospital. Louis Roznovsky was in Spring Branch Hospital but is supposed to be home by now; I hope so, anyway. Also, Bessie Majek was in the hospital for tests but is home, now. Franklin Bravenec is in Golden Age Nursing Home on Long Point Road.

Members, let's try to remember our sick and shut-ins!

Let's not forget our District V meeting at Lodge 142 which will be held March 11th; a dinner from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. will be served.

Lodge 142 members would love to have pastry donations if anyone can bring them. The meeting will start at 1 p.m., and there will be a social after the meeting; the district will serve set-ups until 6 p.m.

Well, for good news, our Choral Club has been invited to New

Orleans, Louisiana for the Fair; isn't that nice?

The Al Pierson Big Band Sound at Lodge 88 held February 18th and the Dutchmasters playing polkas and waltzes (also country/western) February 25th, will be in the past when this is printed.

Tim Kostom has the Lodge 88 History Books for sale at $10 per book. There are some things in it to get your attention; Susan was reading it and when she read that the first stove cost $10 she couldn't get over it.

The Entertainment Committee has adopted "Courtesy" as their theme for 1984 and courtesy is contagious.

Attention Lodge 88 Officers: There will also be picture taking, again, before our next meeting; this time in color to hang in the hall, so -let's all come looking our best.

I understand that Steve Kelly will be in the hospital; he will enter February 29th for knee surgery. He will be at the Northwest Memorial Hospital on Ella Blvd. and Loop 610.

Good luck, Steve, also Frances Olexa is better and beginning to talk, again; it shouldn't be long now that she will be herself again.

133, San Antonio To Celebrate 67th Anniversary

Lodge

Our Lodge 133 in San Antonio held their regular meeting February 19th. There were 35 members and two guests present.

President Matula convened the meeting at 2 p.m. and led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance and also we held a moment of silence remembering our loved ones who have departed from us.

Minutes of the last meeting were read by Secretary Netek, also the treasurer's report was then given by Sister Viola Mazac; both reports were approved as read.

Reports from various chairmen followed which were very satisfactory.

On the sick list we have Sister Stella Mares, Alfred Kalmus, Alvin Schmicek and August Blanar. The memberS wish them all a speedy recovery and we hope to see them at our next meeting, March 18th.

Two new applications were received for Leora Uribe and a new policy by Brother Joe Stryk. The

members accepted them. Serving on the Investigating Committee were Chairman Anthony Tricilek, Charles Kurtz and George Schultz.

Brother Kleprlik gave the annual report as chairman of the Auditing Committee; the report was positive and complimented the treasurer for a fine job well done.

The lodge will celebrate its 67th anniversary at the March meeting; dinner will be served at 12:30 p.m., followed by our regular meeting.

Members are asked to bring only pastry because the lodge will take care of all the other food. We urge all our members to attend this celebration.

Brother Netek gave a report on the forthcoming project that will be sponsored by Lodge 133. This is recommended by the officers, to sponsor a Czech Song and Dance Festival, September 16, 1984; all proceeds to go to charity. More details on this subject will be available at a later date.

The convention is just around the corner and we are looking forward to it!

142, Houston To Host District V Meeting

Lodge

President Mary Ann Kieschnick called our meeting to order Sunday, February 12, 1984 at 2 p.m.

The forty-nine members present stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

Roll call of officers was held by Secretary Alice Jochen and all officers were present.

The secretary also read the minutes from our previous meeting.

All officers' reports were then read.

Sick members were Elsie Hermis, Michael Tumis, Edwin Brazda, Barbara Hermis, who had a baby boy, Brian Robert, who was welcomed home by his brother, Kevin. Congratulations to Barbara and Henry Hermis, Jr., at this happy occasion. Congratulations, also to Rita and Henry Hermis, Sr., for becoming grandparents for the 5th time; they are proud to boast of 3 grandsons and 2 granddaughters.

New applicants for the month are Raymond Cernota, Barbara J. Frederick, Jeffrey Burleson, all signed up by Sales Representative Sidon Tumis.

The District V spring meeting will be hosted by Lodge 142, Sunday, March 11th. Registration begins at 11 a.m., and a barbecued brisket with all the trimmings lunch will be served from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. The meeting will begin at 1:30 p.m., and social hour will follow the meeting.

Refreshments will be served. We are looking forward to a big turnout, so come out and we will welcome you!

Capsule drawing from our capsule jar for $15 was Rodney M. Lange who was absent; sorry. Next month our capsule prize goes to $20, so come to this meeting for you may be the lucky one. Other door prizes went to Mary Ann Kieschnick, Maggie Cernoch, Velma Alexander and Gus Molnosky.

The meeting adjourned at 2:30 p.m. Our next meeting will be Sunday, March 18 at 2 p.m.

Directions to new Lodge 183, Mid-Cities

Dear Members, The new hall is finally open and operating. The first dance is now history! Pinky Purinton's Big Band had some very good music with sounds of the 50s that everyone enjoyed, and, without telling our age, were the songs that we heard when we were young.

In spite of some of the things that were not done, it was a great success. At 2 o'clock in the afternoon Saturday it looked as if the place would not be ready by 8:30 for the dance to start but a few hardworking members stayed and worked until dance time and made it work. All of you hard-working members can now pat yourselves on the back.

Now the planning starts for the grand opening that will be announced soon; anyone wishing to help for the grand opening please call one of the officers and get in on the bandwagon so to speak.

The lodge should be easy to find for you people coming from Dallas or Ft. Worth along 1-20 because you will be able to see the large water tower that the City of Arlington is building between Cooper St. and Matlock St. The Tower is in the same business park as the new lodge hall. When coming in North on Cooper St., turn right on Mayfield to Pleasant Valley Lane and turn left and go to the next to the last building on the left and you are there, when coming in north on Matlock Road, left on Mayfield to Pleasant Valley Lane and then right on Pleasant Valley Lane. You will pass the big water tower on the way to the lodge.

For all of you who missed the first big dance, the next one is March 17th with the country and western band 'LAST CALL' make your plans now and be there; so, if you haven't been there yet, this will give you a chance to see what your officers and Building Committee have been trying to get completed these last few months by attending all of those meetings and working with the builder and the city.

I would like to pass along part of a poem that my pastor wrote not long ago: "Meetings are like humans and humans are like meetings — sometimes they work, and sometimes they don't; sometimes they're quick, and sometimes they're slow; sometimes they do things, and sometimes they don't!"

But all I can add to that is — when they work it really makes you feel good inside and tell everyone what you did.

For all of you who think that the new building was a big joke, come to the next event at the lodge. The

regular meeting is March 11, Sunday, 6:30 p.m. at the new hall, and the next dance Saturday, March 17th.

The lodge was honored to have our District II Director Sid Pokladnik and wife, Justine, at our first event. We welcome them and hope they come back often in the future.

For all of you members and friends who have been waiting to see the building, come on out any time.

Friendship Club of Fort Worth Dear Members and Friends: The meeting was called to order on a beautiful February day. There were no signs of it being a wintry month. Our new member made welcome was Joe Milan, and guests Mary and Benny Pavey. Our thanks to Mary Pavey for taking the place of hostess Gertrude Johnston who was hospitalized at St. Joseph's Hospital. She is now at home and feeling much better.

Several other members were reported on the sick list, recuperating at home. We express get well wishes to Mrs. Emma Bartak of Grandview who had spent several days at North Hills Medical Center and to Vice-President Rosie Steinman, who fell after slipping on a wet porch and breaking her right wrist.

Extending her Christmas vacation for about six weeks, Rose Million enjoyed visiting family and grandchildren in New York and California. Her gracious attributes were missed, but we are glad she had a safe trip and is in our midst once again We extend our congratulations to Cecilia Nemec and Mark Gutowski of Houston, Texas, who were wed Saturday, January 28th at the St. Peter's Catholic Church in Blessing, Texas.

Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. Charles Nemec of Blessing, Texas and Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Gutowski of Houston, Texas. Mrs. Charles Nemec is the former Agnes Seviek, who moved from this area after World War II. She was a neighbor to me and has been a longtime friend.

The reception with dinner and dance at the American Legion Hall in El Campo, done the South Texas style, was most delightful. Roy and I wish to thank many of you in the Vestnik reading range for the warm reception given to us at this special wedding party. The names are too numerous to mention; you were just like long-time friends, but we were meeting for the first time.

We had a delightful visit with three Czech families from Czechoslovakia at the home of Henry and Phyllis Seviek in Richland Hills recently. Two of the families have been in the states a short period of time. They are Ilona and Vaclav Zelenka and daughter, Jana of Ostrava; Marcela and Miroslav Kubec and daughter, Renata of Nymburk. The third family, Yarmila and Vojtech Tkadlec and daughter, Martina, and son, Tomas were exposed to the Texas hospitality here on the farm last Easter Sunday, which they anticipate attending this Easter to meet more of their country's ancestors.

Many of the members will have a toe-tapping time in Ennis and West, dancing to the music of Moostash Joe and Ernie Kucera of Nebraska after my report goes to press. Polka music is being promoted this year by several disc jockeys.

The March hostesses for the March 7th meeting will be Louise Oujesky and Josephine Bugaj.

"Happy Birthday" was expressed through song for Mollie Walker, Rosemary Gribble and Roy Alholm.

May we also wish happy birthdays to Lisa Hopkins, Gordon Hubenak, Martha Kocian, R. L. Alholm and Danny Alholm.

San Antonio Czech

Choral Club News The San Antonio Czech Choral Club had their practice at the PolishAmerican Center, February 17th.

It is encouraging that so much interest has developed in our club.

We have new members, Dorothy Crockett, Steve Lyssy and Charlie Kurtz. We are happy to have them with us.

Other members present were Joe and Annie Stryk, John and Emily Havelka, Adolph and Agnes Popp, Alvin and Georgia Zidek, Manuel Hrncir, Louis and Theresa Jasek, Frank and Lupe Jasek, Edwin and Ann Jasek, Don and Marie Netek, Steve Lyssy, Dorothy Crockett, Viola Mazac and Charlie Kurtz.

We now have 70 songs that we sing and we try to alternate them at the practice sessions; some of the songs have been arranged so that the ladies have a solo, as well as the men.

Our organizational status is that each member pays monthly dues and we also have money-making projects at the Polish Festivals as well as the annual Czech Festival. The money made on these projects help us buy our necessary items that are much needed in our club such as our accordionist Emily Havelka will no longer play the accordion; we

bought a small organ that is easier to transport and it is much easier for her to manage.

We have many commitments for 1984 and all the members are enthused about going places. We enjoy singing some of the old Czech songs that our parents have sung for so many years, but we also enjoy the newer songs that are now popular in Czechoslovakia.

Gay Galetka read resolutions of sympathy for our departed members, Mrs. Andela Zabransky, Jaro Konvicka, Joseph Waytek and Frances Kahanek President Zabransky recognized our visitors as District VI Director Matt Vanek and State Field Manager Silas Smith of the Supreme Lodge.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes to the previous meeting which were approved. Correspondence was read.

Gaynell Chudej, co-youth leader, gave a report followed by treasurer Helen Zabransky and Financial Secretary Hilmer Galetka giving reports.

Elsie Mascheck of the Audit Committee reported that they met and found the books to be in good order. The other committee members were Alfons Holy and Patsy Zabransky.

Director Vanek gave a short talk to the members followed by State Field Manager Silas Smith who spoke on the need and importance of more sale representatives for our lodge and asked the cooperation of members to help secure more members. Brother Smith will be staying in Victoria for 6 to 8 weeks to assist District VI and will be happy to answer any questions about being a sales representative or about joining SPJST. Our lodge enjoyed their visit and the information they gave us.

Refund checks were given out and the meeting adjourned.

A Happy Valentine Greeting to all SPJST members. We certainly had a nice Valentine dance February 11th. Don Sessum's Band played for us plus we had our biggest attendance. I, personally, missed very few dances that night.

Everyone had a great time in the beautifully decorated hall.

January 21st, we had our first FUN AND GAMES night. It turned out quite successfully in spite of the severely cold weather. Most everyone played forty-two and I can tell you we've got some very good if not expert players at this game.

Maybe later on we can make up some forty-two teams and get together with other lodges and compete — Maybe? We are having a FUN AND GAMES night February 18th and I'll report on that later.

Our dance lessons program is also a huge success thanks to Mary Lea and Richard Bivins and all helpers participating in this project showing 25 couples to improve or learn how to dance.

Our garage sales program is also doing well. We are holding garage sales on the 1st Saturday of each month. We again ask all you nice people to bring any items that you might have to donate to the next garage sale you visit or the next time you visit the SPJST Lodge.

We held our monthly meeting February 13th. Mr. John Anderson called the meeting to order. The progress report seems to get better and better, thanks to some determined people.

MARCH 24TH, 1984 — Keep this date open on your calendar. We are having a St. Patrick's Day Bar-B-que and dance. We will definitely have a LIVE band (Don Sessum's Band with Jimmy Bryan singing). Tickets will be available at coming dances and gatherings. Contact Kennet Thornton for more information.

Dramatic Club-Lodge 88

Hlahol

The Czech Dramatic Club Hlahol has scheduled Sunday, April 29th for their presentation of a hilarious Czech comedy. Hlahol has put on many good comedies and musicals in the past, and this new presentation should surpass even those. Hlahol tries to keep the rich Czech language alive, and, we of Czech ancestry, should do our best to support this activity; so, mark your calendars already now and hlep spread the word around to your friends and neighbors to make arrangements to attend 2 p.m.

By-law Changes To The SPJST By-law Committee Article 9 to read as follows: a. All by-laws must be enacted by two thirds of the authorized votes of the delegates present. All other matters are decided by a majority. b. Supreme Lodge Board of Officers has the authority to amend or repeal any by-laws that conflict with the State Board of Insurance between conventions. c. Any by-laws left out or amended erroneously or purposely by the printer or the by-law committee, shall remain an active by-law as adopted by the convention delegates and the convention procedures will rule over the printed by-law in error until repealed or amended by a delegate referendum or a future convention. d. Voting in the convention is conducted in compliance with the wishes of the delegates in following manner: (a)Raising of hands (b)Rising (c) Calling names of the delegates and recording the vote "for" or "against" (d)Secret vote by ballot (e)Voice vote Article 104 and the following Article 104 c The Publication Committee should hold an annual meeting, and a special meeting in exceptional cases when problems cannot be settled by correspondence. The committee is paid according to the pay set for regular committee meetings by the Committee on Salary and Donations.

The above changes are submitted by the Publication Committee to the By-Law Committee for consideration by the 1984 SPJST Convention delegates.

He must have knowledge of both Czech and English languages, and must have previous business experience in the Fraternal Insurance Field.

(Delete - And The Head Of all Departments) Article 44 (H) Each district will receive an allocation of $450.00 per year from the Supreme Lodge to be placed in the district's General Expense Fund. This sum is to be used by the district to pay the lodge hosting the district meeting not less than $100.00 per meeting with the balance being used to defray the expenses to the district. Effective immediately.

Add new (1) To Article 44 (1) The lodge in each district hosting a District Youth Achievement Day or other districtwide youth activity, will receive an allocation of $100.00 per activity from the Supreme Lodge. This will be placed in the district's Expense Fund, to be used to defray the expenses of the lodge hosting that activity. Effective immediately.

In regard to: (1) Lodges are becoming reluctant to hosting a YAD because of the expense involved and an allocation would encourage more lodges to host a YAD. Lodges are reluctant to hosting a district meeting because $75.00 does not cover the expense when rental is necessary.

NEWSBRIEFS Edwin A. Kovar, 88, died in a Taylor hospital on February 22nd.

Funeral services were held from St. Mary's Catholic Church in Taylor on February 24th, with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery. Bro. Kovar was a longtime member of Lodge 29 of Taylor where he had served on the Property Committee. He had also served on the Building Committee of S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. I in Taylor and also had previously served as a director of the rest home.

Our Statewide Youth Leaders' Retreat for 1984 is set for Saturday, March 24th, and Sunday, March 25th. We will probably start around 9 a.m. Saturday morning and the retreat will be over after the noon meal Sunday.

The site of this year's retreat is Camp Lone Star near La Grange.

The facilities are very nice and we think that you will be pleased with the surroundings, which should be very conducive to the learning process. All DYC's, Assistant DYC's, Youth Leaders and Assistants, plus anyone else involved in our youth program are welcome to attend; however, this occasion is not to be considered a weekend vacation, but as a period of learning and relating. What you will learn should then be applied in your activities and work with the youth. Spouses involved with and interested in our youth are welcome. The accommodations are limited so other than the seven DYC's, the selections will have to be based on a need-to-know and eventual-use basis, as well as a first-come-first-served basis, with a deadline of March 5, 1984.

Camp Lone Star is located southeast of La Grange. You will need to follow the sign that is alongside the highway just after you cross the iron bridge across the Colorado River going south out of La Grange on Hwy 77 and before you ascend the bluff.

There will be no meal available Friday, so if you intend to arrive Friday evening, you need to either eat beforehand or bring a light snack. Kitchen facilities will not be open Friday night. The first meal served will be breakfast Saturday morning. If you don't arrive in time for breakfast at either 7:30 or 8 a.m., your first meal will be the noon lunch Saturday.

The Supreme Lodge will pay round trip mileage for (1) car from a lodge, plus camp costs, which include all meals and lodging.

However, no mileage reimbursement will be paid for those who do not arrive in time for the start of Saturday's activities or to those who leave before noon Suday. We plan to start the day's activities at 9 a.m.

SHARP Saturday. Bring note pads and pencils. A full day and a half's activities are being planned, including some evening functions.

PLEASE — no alcoholic beverages on camp premises. This is a learning and relating experience.

If at all possible, each person attending the Retreat should send in a separate form. This will avoid confusion and allow us to have a more accurate count. Longhorn Recreation Lab Dear Youth Leaders and/or Assistants: Some of you may have heard in years past about Longhorn Recreation Lab located near Brownwood, Texas. This is the Laboratory for Leadership Training and Program Development. Sessions include Recreation in the Arts, Conflict Management, Outdoor Interpretation, Clowning, Song Leadership, Basketry, Games, Party Planning, and Square and Folk Dancing, plus a number of others.

As has been the case in the past few years, the Laboratory is offered in two formats: A weekend session and a week-long session. The weekend session is from March 9th through the 11th, and the week-long session is from March 11th through the 16th.

In years past this has proven to be beneficial to our leaders, however, you should not attend with the idea of "getting away from it all" and spending a week there just for a good time. Of course, you should enjoy yourself and meet a lot of new faces, but the PRIMARY reason you are going is to learn some new techniques that you can PUT INTO USE in your local lodge and with your young people. Unless you can do this, the time spent would have been worthless as far as your youth club and the young members under you are concerned. You can come back

and say, "I had a great time and met a lot of nice people. It was much fun!" I'm sure that will have been the case, but how did it help you in your youth work?

The Supreme Lodge has approved attendance at this year's Longhorn Recreation Lab (LRL). The tuition involves an advance registration and the balance payable on arrival at the Lab. Both of these fees will be paid out of this office. If you plan to attend the weekend workshop and you plan to eat the evening meal at 6 p.m. that Friday, the extra meal is $4.25.

Please let me know in writing of your intention to attend either of these workshops, and if you intend to attend the weekend workshop, let me know whether you plan to be there by 6 p.m. March 9th so that we can add the cost of the meal to the balance of your tuition. REGISTRATION AND ALL ADVANCE REGISTRATION FEES AND BALANCE OF TUITION FEES WILL BE PAID AND HANDED OUT OF THIS OFFICE. Let me know your intentions NO LATER THAN February 28th. In addition to your name, include your home and business phones, if you have one, plus your complete address. Don't wait until the last minute.

In addition, we will pay your round-trip mileage from your home to the Lab. Let me know soon if you are interested and I will mail you a brochure with complete information.

We are limiting this to two youth leaders from each district, and this will be determined on a first-comefirst-served basis.

I will then ask some of you who have attended LRL to either demonstrate and/or report on what you learned sometime during our Statewide Youth Leaders' Retreat at Camp Lone Star near LaGrange on March 24th and 25th. If two of you are going from the same general area, we would ask that you travel together in order to save on mileage, or if you wish to travel to the other person's house, that will be satisfactory and you would be paid the miles from your house to the other person's house.

Its size and lack of seaports have not lessened the country's beauty to its visitors.

It has 49,381 square miles and is surrounded by six nations: West Germany, East Germany, Hungary, Soviet Union, Austria, and Poland.

An unusual feature about Czechoslovakia is its shape. It is shoe-shaped, the toe of the shoe kicking toward the east.

Czechoslovakia is divided into three sections — Bohemia, Moravia, and Slovakia. Bohemia and Moravia are the original homelands of the Czechs; Slovakia is the home of the Slovaks. Their histories have often been different, but they still share a common state and government.

TOPOGRAPHY For the most part Czechoslovakia is a fertile land of green fields, dense forests and rolling hills.

Czechoslovakia also contains numerous urban industrial sites and two major mountain ranges. Tatra mountains of Slovakia dominate the northern edge of the nation. The highest peak of Czechoslovakia is located in this mountain range. Mt. Gerlavk has a height of 8,737 feet.

The second mountain range is the Sumava. It forms a densely wooded wall between Bavaria, in Germany, and the southern part of Bohemia.

Czechoslovakia's major rivers are the Vltava, the Elbe, and the Danube. The Vltava and the Elbe flow through Bohemia to Germany.

Czechoslovakia's southern border, which is marked by the Danube River, separates Slovakia from Hungary. Slovakia had been a part of Hungary for a thousand years, but then in 1918, it joined the modern nation of Czechoslovakia.

CLIMATE Czechoslovakia has a mixed climate. Bohemia and Moravia have much milder winters than Slovakia.

The Danubian lowlands are the warmest places in Czechoslovakia.

The annual temperature is 50 degrees F. The mountains along the border from the Sumava to the Krkonse (Giant) ridge, and in the Tatras are the coolest places in Czechoslovakia. The lowest temperature, as might be expected, is on Mt. Lomnicky which is nearly 8,700 feet high. The average reading on the thermometer averages 25.7 degrees F. In June, July, and August is when the rainfall is the greatest, particularly the mountain regions.

Snowfall is nothing new in Czechoslovakia. Winter sports are enjoyed throughout the winter.

FLORA AND FAUNA One third of Czechoslovakia is covered by forests. The forests are a very important raw material. They are an adornment as well. The timberland is protected by government limits on cutting. The yearly output is approximately 43,000,000 solid cubic yards of lumber. Of the total yield, eighty per cent of the lumber is coniferous timber and the other twenty per cent is broadleaf timber.

Wildlife is abundant throughout the country and for hunters some kind of game is in season 12 months a year. Big game is consisted of several kinds of deer, years, the chamois (a type of European antelope), the wild boar and the moufflon, which is a wild mountain sheep characterized by huge, curved horns. Small game includes pheasant, wild duck, and hare.

AGRICULTURE The best farmland lies along the river valleys of north central Bohemia, central Moravia and Southern Slovakia. Barley, corn, rye, sugar, beets, and wheat are the most important items produced in these areas. Farmers also raise beef and dairy cattle, hogs, poultry, and sheep. Livestock products account for slightly more than half the value of Czechoslovakia's agricultural production.

State and collective farms occupy 90 per cent of Czechoslovakia's farmland. The other ten percent is owned by individual farmers.

Collective farms average about 1,500 acres. The farm workers are paid a part of the farm's earnings.

State farms average 10,500 acres.

The government owns and operates the farms.

ACTIVITIES HELD BY LODGE 6, COTTONWOOD YOUTH CLUB Dear Readers, Our monthly meeting was held February 5th. Cakes were brought to the Rest Home and Valentine cards were also passed out.

Friday, February 10, we held our Valentine Party. The youth club donated glass and paperbacks to many charities.

For our next meeting, we will have a kite-flying contest.

Birthdays for the month of February are: Stephanie Mynar and Tammy Mynar.

Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth club held its monthly meeting February 12th. The meeting was called to order by President Vicki Dorotik.

Stephanie Roye led us in the pledge and Marcy Dorotik recited a prayer.

Poems were recited by Stephanie Roye, Jean Dorotik, Lenice Kasper and Michelle Srubar.

Door prizes were won by Michelle Srubar, Keith Kresta, Landis and Janna Dornak, Vicki Dorotik and Jennifer Dluhos.

Contest winners in age groups were (6-9): 1st -Lenice Kasper, 2nd -Kristy Vacek, Srd- Craig Dorotik; (10-12): 1st - Marcy Dorotik, 2nd-Landis Dornak; (1317): 1st -Jean Dorotik, 2nd - Michelle Srubar, 3rd - Craig Dornak.

39, BRYAN YC PLANS INDOOR RODEO LODGE

Dear Members: We held a very interesting meeting Sunday, February 12, 1984.

A robot named "Freddy" came to the lodge to present a program; he sure was smart and knew a lot about us.

We also exchanged Valentines. I got a lot of nice ones.

We planned a Skating Party for February 25th at Pooh's Park. We

also rescheduled our Indoor Rodeo for March 9th.

Adam Macik and Jennifer Kubin won door prizes; they got colored marking pens.

LODGE 188, CENTERVILLE YC MET RECENTLY Dear Vestnik Readers, Lodge 188 held their youth club meeting from 2 to 4 p.m. February 13, 1984 at Centerville.

We discussed the next month's activities and we took gifts to the nursing home for Valentine's Day. We got our SPJST T-shirts to wear. We skated and had refreshments at the meeting. There were fourteen people and one visitor at the meeting. At our "Child Abuse" program there were ten persons present.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the members of Lodge Bila Hora No. 16, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother VICTOR H. FOJT, who passed away 28 November, 1983 at the age of 72 in San Antonio, Texas.

Brother Fojt was a member of Lodge Bila Hora No. 16 and was a retired clerk of a department store in San Antonio.

He was buried December 1st at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.

Zdrubek, No. 112, Guy, Texas, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our most sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge sister PAULINE SITTA MIKESKA, age 92, who passed away January 21, 1984, in the Polly Ryon Hospital.

Sister Mikeska was born in Lavaca County, near Hallettsville, Texas, in 1891, to Mr. and Mrs. John Sitta. In 1902, the family came to Fort Bend County, settling in the Needville-Guy area, where she lived until her death. Her husband, Joe H. Mikeska, preceded her in death in 1965. She was a charter member of Lodge No. 112.

She is survived by four daughters, Dorothy Eversole of Hitchcock, Leona Wilhite of Austin, Vlasta Surovec of Damon and Viola Spalding of Portola Valley, California; two sons, Joe E. Mikeska of Guy and

Calvin Mikeska of Houston; fourteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday morning at the GarmanyCardin Chapel in Needville with Rev. Richard Avery officiating.

Burial followed at Guy Public Cemetery. Her grandsons served as pallbearers. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Garmany-Cardin Funeral Home of Needville.

Olga Mikeska Adeline Bacica -SPJSTEXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge Karel Havlicek, No. 4, Hallettsville, Tx., in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother JARO KONVICKA, who passed away suddenly of a heart attack in The Brazos Valley Hospital in Sealy, at 1:45 p.m., January 28, 1984 at the age of 78 years.

He was born at Moravia, Texas, Lavaca County, October 20, 1905.

October 22, 1930, he married Miss Emma Rose Olsovsky in Hallettsville. He was an Exxon Company employee where he worked in production for 26 years.

He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Sealy, the KJT and the SPJST Lodge 4 of Hallettsville.

Services were held at the Immaculate Conception Church, Monday, January 30, at 10 a.m., with Msgr.

Tom McNulty officiating. Burial was in the Sealy Catholic Cemetery.

Surviving are his wife, Emma Rose Olsovsky Konvicka of Sealy; 2 daughters, Mrs. Patricia J. Sekinger of Lake Jackson and Mrs. Riley Ondruch of Sealy; one son, Leon A. Konvicka of Sealy; sisters, Mrs. Lydia Holub of Schulenburg, Mrs. Sylvia Melnar of Hallettsville and Mrs. Cecelie Sisak of Smithville; 6 grandchildren.

He was a member of the Czech Moravian Brethren Church, and a member of the SPJST Society, RVOS Insurance and Vsetin Cemetery Association.

He was born in Lavaca County July 4, 1898, the son of Joseph and Mary Hurta Woytek. He married Stella Bocek October 4, 1922, in Hallettsville. He was a retired farmer.

The body lay-in-state at the Kubena Funeral Home until 8:45

a.m., Thursday, February 2, when it was taken to the Czech Moravian Brethren Church in Vsetin for services at 10 a.m. The Rev. Henry Beseda and the Rev. Mark Labaj officiated. Burial was in the Vsetin Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Stella Woytek of Hallettsville; a son, Leslie J. Woytek of Reno, Nevada; a daughter, Mrs. Vivian M. Adams of Hallettsville; a brother, Leonard Woytek of Hallettsville; two sisters, Mrs. Emilie Trlica and Mrs. Albina Zak of Hallettsville; 10 grandchildren; and 13 greatgrandchildren.

Sister Mary was born in Limestone County, Texas, 31 October 1909. She was married to Adolph Joe Beralek in 1929. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church.

Sister Mary Beralek became a member of Lodge 35, Elk, 26 September 1933. Sister Mary was elected as the lodge's first youth leader in 1960 and remained very active in our lodge until her health failed.

Sister Mary will long be remembered for her ever-present smile and charming personality.

Sis. Hejny was born Anna Martinek, July 25, 1888 in Bohemia, subject of Austria. In 1889 she came to the United States with her parents and settled east of Ennis.

She was reared there and attended school at Mott. In 1906 she was married to Frank L. Hejny of Crisp.

After their marriage they lived in Crisp. Mr. Hejny preceded her in death in 1961. In 1963 she moved to Ennis.

She was a member of SPJST Lodge 135 and the St. John's Catholic Church.

Sister Hejny is survived by two sons, Frank W. Hejny and Jerry C. Hejny, both of Ennis; two daughters, Mrs. Libbie Janousek and Mrs. Alic Kriska of Dallas; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren, 8 greatgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. One daughter, Anna, and two sons, Charlie and Joe B. Hejny, former vice president of the SPJST Supreme Lodge, preceded her in death.

Texas immunization activities have produced a 93 percent reduction in vaccine preventable diseases and an 89 percent reduction in mortality in the past 15 years, thanks to the success of immunization activities in the state.

Euel A. Smith, director of the Immunization Division of the Texas Department of Health, said the Division was established in 1967 and "has provided and distributed vaccines and promoted immunizations throughout the state."

Remarkable accomplishments in reducing the threat of immunizable diseases are evident when comparing the two 15-year periods (1952-66, and 1967-81).

After the TDH Immunization Division was established in 1967, statistics show a 93 percent reduction in morbidity and a 89 percent reduction in deaths from five vaccine-preventable diseases. These diseases are diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, polio and measles.

Rubella and mumps were not reported in Texas until 1966 and 1968, respectively.
