It's amazingly easy to move ahead in any form of selling — if you just think about the human side of your selling job. Ask yourself today, "What would I do, how would I work at my selling job, if I were the boss?"

Let your answer guide you to greater success in selling, whether you work in a retail establishment or

sell for a wholesaler or manufacturer. Many of the men who achieved fame and fortune in business owe their rapid rise to the fact that they went all out to help build their employer's business, doing everything they could no matter how menial or how big.

This boss is human, too. His own success depends on your success.

Think about his objectives, go all out in helping him by doing far more than he expects of you, and you're sure to be a success.

From the Vice President's Office SPJST Annuity Sales Team Ready The final Annuity Seminar was conducted by SFM Gene McBride this past Saturday, February 11th.

The four sessions of training allowed us to qualify eighty-three sales representatives to counsel our membership on SPJST annuities.

District V Meeting - March 11 Dear Members, We district officers met with Lodge No. 142 officers and some special guests to make plans for our district meeting. The meeting will be held the second Sunday in March at Lodge Stefanik, No. 142, 5508 Nolda, Houston. Judging by the enthusiasm shown by all present, I think it will be an enjoyable day for you and your family.

Registration starts at 11 a.m. A barbecue brisket dinner with the trimmings will be served from 11 to 1. All you good cooks, Lodge 142 will appreciate donations of pastry!

We are fortunate again to have Lodge No. 88 Czech Concert Orchestra, directed by Rudy Dybala, and Lodge No. 88 Choral Club, directed

by Tim Kostom, to perform for us during the noon hour. You have heard them, so you know this will be some fine entertainment!

The meeting will start at 1:30 p.m.

We will have a memorial service, an interesting youth program, few brief reports by officers, and election of officers. The youth club will also elect officers. Agenda for the meeting will be given in my next letter. There will be no long speeches, so I can promise you that the meeting will not be too long.

At least seven door prizes of $5 each will be given just before the meeting is adjourned. You must be present to win.

There will be a social following the meeting for all the members attending the meeting. The refreshments will be furnished by the district. This will give you a chance to visit with members from other lodges or, if you wish, dance to good music.

President Mary Ann Kieschnick and officers of Lodge No. 142 and we district officers extend a special invitation to you and your family to come and enjoy a day of fellowship.

15, Buckholts Meeting

Dear Members, In spite of the foggy and cold weather, we still had a nice turnout for our regular monthly meeting February 8.

In the absence of President Ann Balusek, who is on vacation, the meeting was opened by Vice President Ed Svoboda by leading the members in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

Roll call showed all the rest of the officers present.

Brother Ed welcomed our guest, Tillie Tomascik, and one member, Leona Turner, who came for a visit all the way from Kerrville. We sure were glad to see you both. Please come again!

The minutes, all officers' and committees' reports were approved as read.

One member, little Anna Marie Zelisko, had eye surgery. We hope you are feeling a lot better by now.

The bar remodeling is coming along real nice. The men are doing a mighty fine job.

We will have five members who belonged to our club for fifty years this year, so, at the next meeting, we will plan a party for them to happen later on this year.

"Happy Birthday" was wished to Sister Charlsie Svetlik and Brother Milton Shiller.

The meeting was adjourned and everyone enjoyed a delicious homemade chicken noodle soup supper prepared by Sister Sidonia Svoboda.

Our next meeting will be March 14 at 7 p.m. Please come!

17 Sets Date For Annual Barbecue/Fun Day

Dear Vestnik Readers, Lodge No. 17 at New Tabor held their regular monthly meeting Sunday, February 5, 1984 at 2 p.m.

After attending to the regular order of business, discussion was held about setting the date of our annual Barbeque and Fun Day. It was unanimously agreed that the date be set for April 15, 1984.

So-o-o! Mark your calendar and watch the Vestnik for the "Rest of the Story," because we have really got ,a day planned for you!! We are excited about the various activities we have organized for your enjoyment.

The February meeting was called to order by President David Vanicek.

Pledge of Allegiance was recited and a moment of silence was observed for deceased members.

Flagbearers were Christie Waits and Melanie Zavodny.

Penny Mayfield was a visitor at the meeting.

Walter Kosel is in the hospital, we wish him a speedy recovery.

Secretary Pat Vanicek read the minutes of the January meeting and they were approved by the members.

Those celebrating birthdays in February are Jeffery Posvar, Tracie Chervenka, Craig Waits, Zacharey Schneider and Billy Smetanka. We wish you all a happy birthday!

Johnny and Carol Chervenka are celebrating their wedding anniversary this month; we wish them a happy anniversary.

New members accepted at the meeting were Donna Andel, Dorothy Haisler, Sterling Sebek, and Maxie Morgan; these new policyholders were written up by Sales Representatives Eugene Haisler, Carol Chervenka and Franklin Martinek.

The hall will be having another sponsored dance March 17th, it will be a St. Patrick's dance, with music

We are planning on having a picnic and political rally here at the hall April 29th. All members of Lodge 24 are asked to participate and help in any way they can. This has to be a group effort to make it successful. Members will be contacted to bring something for the auction and a cake for the meal.

We will also be needing as many persons as we can find to help that day. You may contact the following chairmen: Auction-Marvin Wilde, Bar-Raymond Coots, Project Tickets-Louise Zavodny, KitchenLaVerne Cabla, Barbecue CooksJohnny Chervenka, Political RallyCharlie Wailes and Arleen Tschoerner. The meal will be $3.50 per plate. Later I will let you know exactly what will be served. The project tickets will be $1 each, for a 12-inch black/white TV, and a .22 automatic rifle.

As I said before, if everyone helps out it will be a success and, of course, the more people, the more fun.

It was announced that February 19th, District II will be having their annual Skating Party at Skate Haven from 5 to 7 p.m. All youth club members from District II are invited to attend; everyone is asked to bring a friend. Family members are invited, also.

Youth Leader Carol Chervenka reminded the youth that YAD is really just around the corner, and that it wouldn't be a bad idea to start planning on your entries.

The youth club was asked to be in charge of the fish pond and the ringa-coke at our picnic April 29th. Each member of the club is asked to help out, so get in touch with Mrs. Chervenka as to what you can do to help and when.

We need to start remembering to bring snacks to our meetings. I know it's hard to do when we all work, but let's try anyway; the youth will enjoy it.

Lodge 74, Lovelady Donates $400 To Their Youth Club Our regular monthly lodge meeting was held at 7:30 p.m.

February 12th.

All officers were present and all board of trustees members were present, except Faye Fowler.

All reports were read and approved.

The mother lodge gave the youth club $400 for dance lessons. They have already had four lessons and show great promise in the art of clogging.

The youth club decorated our lodge for Valentine's Day; it looked real pretty, and we thank them because they always do a terrific job.

The assembly voted in the January meeting to donate to the

Scholarship Fund in lieu of flowers at a member's death.

Members and guests enjoyed a covered dish supper at the lodge February 12th. We really have some great cooks in our lodge. The food was delicious!

Chester Shmoldas has been busy working in the flower beds. They really look nice.

We would like to thank Andy Fowler for doing some plaster work on the wall. We are always having members donating their time for something or some little job that needs to be done. We all appreciate it if we do forget to say "Thank you," sometimes. A special thanks to Ben Erwin for getting our big SPJST sign by the highway working again.

Marie Wright and James Wilcox had birthdays in January. "Happy Birthday" to them!

J. D. and Fern McCullough, George and Edith Charanza, and Mr. and Mrs. Sam Allbright all have had anniversary celebrations. We hope all of them have many more happy occasions to celebrate.

Some of our members are already enjoying vacations; Jackie and Red Douthit have gone to Las Vegas for a week. We wish them a good time and good luck.

Eddie and Becky Wilcox spent the weekend in Florida, scuba diving.

They reported a great time.

After our monthly meeting, everyone enjoyed chips and dips served by Sherry Michka on behalf of the youth club. To all the youth club, we really enjoyed it.

Lodge 81 met February 12 for its regular monthly meeting at 12:15 p.m., beginning with a noon meal.

Everyone enjoyed a delicious, barbecued brisket and all the various side dishes and desserts brought by the ladies. A hearty thanks to Brother Edward Faler for a job well-done on the barbecuing.

Following the noon meal, several groups enjoyed playing "42" and "Mexican" dominoes until time for the meeting.

President Charlie Matcek called the meeting to order promptly at 2 p.m. and Sister Lillie Teykl led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

All officers answered the roll call.

Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes and also thank you cards from the Frances Sitta and Arnold Reichle families.

The report on auditing the books was given by Brother Nowotny; all books were found in order.

We were happy to have Brother Louis Hanus with us. He explained to the delegates, who will be representing us at the convention this summer, the proper way to fill their reservation blanks and urged them to turn them in to our secretary, who will send them in as soon as possible.

The following donations will be sent in: Needville Fire Depart.-$150, S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home II-$150, State School-$50, and March of Dimes-$50.

Our March meeting will be conflicting with the District V meeting at Lodge 142, March 11th, so we will hold our meeting Tuesday, March 13 at 7 p.m.; please mark this change on the calendar.

Brother Nowotny expressed thanks to Lodge 81 in behalf of the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home II for all the donations we have given them.

Refund checks were handed out and Brother Hanus drew the names for the attendance prizes, which were won by Brother Edward Faler and Sister Benita Walzel.

February 13th, beginning at 7:30 p.m., Lodge 88 held its monthly meeting. Following the usual opening procedures such as the Pledge of Allegiance, the reading of the names of deceased members, the reading of the minutes and correspondence, President Ermis began the reports of officers.

Brother Roger Akey was asked to explain to us about a special presen-

Justine and Rudy Chaloupka announced that their daughter and son-in-law Norma and Bill McLendon are to celebrate their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary March 4 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Brookside Recreation Center at 1244 Brookside Drive in Hurst, Texas and invited members and friends to attend and share in their happiness.

We express our sympathy to Al and Alene Kercho on the death of her father, John Zubb, on January 15th. Likewise so many of us mourn the passing away of longtime member Steve Matusevitch who was so constant in his attendance in earlier years and who spent many working hours for the benefit of our organization. My own family was also saddened by the loss of our dear sister and sister-in-law Victoria Jaworski Gholdston who died January 25th.

Correspondence was read from Brother Bernie Gebala, and the Czech Culture Society.

Brother Milan reported they are still working on plans for the Family Day. He also received a call from Sister Bessie Petr on the YAD; there is a possibility our lodge will host it.

We had a discussion to start working on plans for our 10th anni versary that will be held the last week in July 1985.

Brother Steinman reminded us to watch for the details on the District III meeting which will be hosted by Lodge 6, Cottonwood.

Sister Carolyn Cleveland reported the youth club members are meeting for a pizza dinner.

Sister Pavey reported on the getwell and sympathy cards sent to various ones.

Program Scheduled At Lodge 172, Padadena "CA/N"

Wednesday evening, February 22, 1984 a program on "Child Abuse and Neglect" will be presented at Lodge Rozkvet Pasadena No. 172.

The program will follow the regular monthly meeting which starts at 7:30 p.m. State Project Coordinator for the SPJST, Sister Thelma Hrncir of Corpus Christi, who also is District VII director will be in charge of this important subject. She will be assisted by Ms. Judy Hay with the Texas Depart ment of Human Resources.

Our lodge is located at 3609 Preston in Pasadena, and everyone is invited to attend.

A special ballroom dance will be held February 24 at 9 p.m. with music by Manny Green and his popular band.

Two of our good members, Sylvia and Hans Hugo, who moved to New Braunfels last year, attended our two dances at the lodge Friday and Saturday nights. The River Road Boys played to a large crowd Friday, and Rudy Kurtz played variety music Saturday night. It was nice to

see the Hugos this past weekend and we hope they return soon.

We were all glad to see Esther Mikeska back at our lodge meetings and dances after eye surgery. Also, it was nice to see Sister Rena Ordner attending our dances.

Although she is not ready to begin dancing, again; her faithful husband, John, makes sure she is one of the faithful ones to attend.

Saturday, February 25 we have Donnie Wavra Band, and his music usually draws a good number of people. My good wife, Vicki, and I will be in charge that night and we hope to see a full house. You all come and enjoy that good Pasadena hospitality.

The February 8th meeting was called to order by Vice President Louis Driska in the absence of President Rae Lisenbe.

All other officers were present and the Pledge of Allegiance was then recited.

On the sick list and in the hospital were Walter Jezek and Juanita Reyna. A speedy recovery was wished by the members.

A sympathy card was sent to Margie Kohring on the death of her mother.

The minutes from the last meeting were read and approved.

We had one transferee, James Howell from Lodge 87, Temple.

Eleven new members joined our lodge, namely, K. Hargrove, Dianna J. Loyd, Timothy L. Hargrove, Betty Kunze, George A. Whitehead, Louis S. Halbert, James R. Lynch and Margie E. Whitehead. All new members were voted on and approved. Our lodge wants these new members to feel free to come to our meetings the second Wednesday of every month.

The treasurer's report was given

by Josie Tomastik. Bar Chairperson Pat Tomastik had a good report.

Kitchen Co-Chairman Libbie Bartek gave the report in the absence of Brother Jezek. Ticket Chairperson Frances Love was also absent, so no report was made. Co-Chairman Cecil LaGrange gave the bingo report.

Youth Leader Ann Tomastik had a good turnout.

Libbie Bartek reported that she had sent get-well cards to Joe Smith {youth) and Billy J. Moore, Juanita Reyna, Walter Jezek (and a plant to Brother Jezek), also a card to Charles Justice.

Board of Trustees' report was given by Bruce Tomastik.

Emergency lights have been fixed, prices are being checked for individual mikes for the bingo floor walkers. No glass bottles to be sold behind the bar.

We decided to donate $150 to the Livestock Show in Temple and upgraded the insurance on the hall.

The youth club is to have two money-making dances for April 6th and June 8th.

We decided to replace the small tables with wider tables.

The Rules and Regulations Committee did not meet before the meeting. Frances Love is also on the

R&R Committee and since there was a mix-up in a name in my last letter, I apologize to Ebbie Lisenbe.

A thank you note was received from Wilbert Ramm.

There was no old business.

Under new business 20 new tables have been bought and 19 older-wider tables will be put back in use. The lodge has the narrow tables for sale; and, if they cannot be traded in, the cost will be $25 each to members and $30 to non-members.

On behalf of the Academy FFA Alumni, Edward Bartek thanked the lodge for donating the use of the hall for the fund-raising dance held there February 3rd; the Alumni made $992 from the ticket sales and $571 on the auction. As a member of the Alumni, I would like to add a word of praise to all the kitchen help consisting of Bessie Moore and others, the bar help composed of Otis Beck, Raymond Chudez, Gracie Chudez, Bruce Tomastik, Edward Bartek, Aubrey Quinn, and the ever-helpful ladies, Pat Tomastik and Helen Bland; also the ticket helpers, Nita Bartek, Alta May Quinn, plus to all the other people who helped sell tickets and cleaned up. Academy SPJST lodge has been a great help to the Alumni; thank you for your loyal support!

Dear Members and Friends: A large group was present to enjoy the delectable chicken stew and a great variety of delicious desserts Thursday night, February 9 at the 7 p.m. regular lodge meeting.

President Harold Bergmann opened the meeting by leading the assembly in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Reports were given and correspondence were read by respective officers.

President Bergmann appointed an Auditing Committee consisting of Ricky Wegand, Jeanette Schoenst and Ora Lee Wickel.

He also expressed thanks to the Stew Committee, and the Serving Committee for a job well done. Furthermore, in behalf of the members, thanked Arnold and Lydia Peters for furnishing all the ,refreshments in the January meeting; it was in honor of their birthdays.

The Food Committee stated the lodge will furnish chili sandwiches for the March 8 meeting at 7 p.m.

There was no further business so the meeting was adjourned. Prior to the meal, this reporter's birthday was revealed when Staci Schoenst presented the celebrant with a beautifully decorated cake topped with candles. While the candles were burning, all those present sang "Happy Birthday". Thanks for everything! The remainder, of the evening was spent in good fellowship.

SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas Softball Team Report Dear Brothers and Sisters: Believe it or not, this is our 31st season to field a softball team at Lodge 84 in the Dallas DSMA Softball Amateur League, fast pitch; spring is near and the team members held their first meeting last week to make plans for the 1984 season.

We are contacting team sponsors, making plans for the first team workout, making plans for our annual team benefit dance. Our fund-

raising dance will be early this year: Saturday, April 7 at Lodge 84. The Czech Harvesters' Orchestra will furnish music for our dance consisting of polkas, waltzes and country/ western numbers, so kindly mark your calendar now and come out and support the team because our finances have become more difficult with rising costs, so the only way we can make it is with your support.

Also, if there are any prospective and interested candidates for the team, come out and see if you can make the team; we will have some open spots; that is for a fast-pitch team. As is the case each year, there are always two or three guys retiring and we need new and young replacements to keep the team going.

February 8, 1984 President Pearl Hanka called the meeting to order.

She read another one of her beautiful poems called "There's Sunshine In a Smile." There is a lot of sunshine in a smile!

Sister Kathy Trefell read the minutes in the absence of Sister Rosalee Kostom who was at home recovering from knee surgery. The minutes were approved as read.

Sister Lillie Spies gave the treasurer's report and it was approved as read.

Sister Mary Kosut, sunshine reporter, sent get-well cards to Sisters Rosalee Kostom, Frances Olexa, Inez Jeanes and Cecilia Klecka. Frances Olexa is in the Northwest Hospital. Get-well cards were sent to Brothers Johnny Kosut and John Vasula who is in the Heights Hospital with a broken hip.

He is supposed to return home this weekend. "Hello" cards were sent to Sisters Frances Dvorak and Gereine Nitchman. Sister Doris Knapick thanked everyone for the calls, cards and flowers she received while she was in the hospital and after she returned home. It's good to have her back with us.

The Birthday Club Sisters welcomed a new member, Delores Condon; it's good to have you!

Sister Mary Johnson donated pickles for the dinner and Sister Anna Hoffman donated the meat.

The reason for doing this was for the occasions of her birthday, her husband's birthday and their anniversary.

Sister Kathy Trefell reminded the sisters that on Splash Day, which is in June, we will have a sale table.

We don't want to forget it!

Hostesses for February were Sisters Della Kadlecek, Josephine Burl, Bessie Dewer and Tillie Bily.

Martha Sacho helped the second Wednesday in the absence of Tillie Bily. Thanks to these ladies.

Hlahol Dramatic Club-Lodge 88 The Czech Dramatic Club Hlahol has scheduled Sunday, April 29th for their presentation of a hilarious Czech comedy. Hlahol has put on many good comedies and musicals in the past, and this new presentation should surpass even those. Hlahol tries to keep the rich Czech language alive, and, we of Czech ancestry, should do our best to support this activity; so, mark your calendars already now and hlep spread the word around to your friends and neighbors to make arrangements to attend 2 p.m.

Our meeting was held Thursday, February 2nd with 25 members and the following guests attending: George Skotak, Alvin Elsik, Bob Zvolanek, Dick Grounds, Arnold Vrla, Julius Podhrasky, and Mr. and Mrs. Hoffman from Czechoslovakia.

The meeting was called to order

by President Lydia Dirkx. She then asked that all guests be introduced.

Secretary and treasurer reports were made without corrections.

Correspondence secretary read the following: The Dispute Mediation Service sent a letter explaining their services, the Buckner Baptist Home for Children sent a "Thank you" for our donation, Ella Bartos sent her greetings to all of us, also, in the greetings read, the following sisters sent notes: Rose Novak (Utah), Vallie Tupy, Adela Lesikar, Millie Noska, Suzanne Novak and Bertha Paryzkova (Czechoslovakia), Ann Skrabanek sent "Thank you" for the fruit basket, and the Salvation Army sent "Thank you" for our donation.

Membership chairman reported several more members paying their dues and that Betty Jean Bell donated money for stamps.

Sunshine and Birthday Card reports were made by Ann Zvolanek in the absence of Bessie Kalich and Millie Noska. Birthday Cards were sent in January to Frances Baleja, Betty Jean Bell, Libbie Elsik, Marie Fitz, Georgia Long, Liddie Pavelka, Kathy Pottkotter, Mary Stransky, Helen Vrla, Jr. and Ester Cunningham.

In February cards were sent to Millie Bartek, Mary Dusek, Irene Halouzka, Evelyn Trojacek, Martha Malooly, Millie Noska, Rose Novak, Alice Roberts and Rose Waller.

Wednesday, February 22, 1984—NESTNIK/9 cussion was held as to what to do about the continuation of mailing birthday greeting cards. It was agreed that we discontinue mailing cards. It was also agreed that we increase the amount spent for gifts for our hospitalized-members.

Mary Sebestik talked on the subject of lunches for our Krouzek meetings. After discussing several different ideas, it was finally agreed that we continue to have our monthly lunches with six hostesses and one pay girl. Different ideas will be brought into the planning of these meals so that it would not be the same each month. This will be easier for the hostesses in that they can deviate from the way we have been doing.

Lydia Dirkx presented plaques to Sisters Rose Kopecek and Frances Konakovsky for their many years of service as presidents of our Krouzek.

Zdenka Skotak brought photos of yester-years with many of the Krouzek members in these photos.

The Nominating Committee for this year are: Ann Zvolanek, Alice Roberts and Liddie Pavelka. Adelle Vlk is alternate.

Zdenka Skotak asked whether we would like to purchase song books for our sing-a-long sessions. We will decide next month.

Members also agreed to contribute to the Sokol the same as we have before.

Bessie Reames reported the Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council will hold their meeting February 22nd at the Sokol Hall, hosted by Lodge 130, Dallas.

Sharon Kohn, daughter of Jimmy and Vickie Kohn, graduated from SMU December 12, 1983 receiving a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. Sharon is employed by Mostex Corporation in Carrollton, Texas as an Associate Facilities Engineer. the is Cechan Evelyn grandmother of twin boys.

I am very proud also to announce the arrival of a very beautiful grandson, Brian David.

With all these boys, it should help out in what used to be referred to as the male shortage.

Let me not forget that Libbie Slovak has her 15th greatgrandbaby.

Congratulations to all these proud grannies!

Lillian Graeser has a new grandson, Jason. He weighed 10 lbs., 11 oz.

Head of the Youth Department STATEWIDE YOUTH LEADERS' RETREAT (AMENDED) Our Statewide Youth Leaders' Retreat for 1984 is set for Saturday, March 24th, and Sunday, March 25th. We will probably start around 9 a.m. Saturday morning and the retreat will be over after the noon meal Sunday.

The site of this year's retreat is Camp Lone Star near La Grange.

The facilities are very nice and we think that you will be pleased with the surroundings, which should be very conducive to the learning process. All DYC's, Assistant DYC's, Youth Leaders and Assistants, plus anyone else involved in our youth program are welcome to attend; however, this occasion is not to be considered a weekend vacation, but as a period of learning and relating. What you will learn should then be applied in your activities and work with the youth. Spouses involved with and interested in our youth are welcome. The accommodations are limited so other than the seven DYC's, the selections will

have to be based on a need-to-know and eventual-use basis, as well as a first-come-first-served basis, with a deadline of March 5, 1984.

Camp Lone Star is located southeast of La Grange. You will need to follow the sign that is alongside the highway just after you cross the iron bridge across the Colorado River going south out of La Grange on Hwy 77 and before you ascend the bluff.

There will be no meal available Friday, so if you intend to arrive Friday evening, you need to either eat beforehand or bring a light snack. Kitchen facilities will not be open Friday night. The first meal served will be breakfast Saturday morning. If you don't arrive in time for breakfast at either 7:30 or 8 a.m., your first meal will be the noon lunch Saturday.

The Supreme Lodge will pay round trip mileage for (1) car from a lodge, plus camp costs, which include all meals and lodging.

However, no mileage reimbursement will be paid for those who do not arrive in time for the start of Saturday's activities or to those who leave before noon Suday. We plan to start the day's activities at 9 a.m.

SHARP Saturday. Bring note pads and pencils. A full day and a half's activities are being planned, including some evening functions.

PLEASE no alcoholic beverages on camp premises. This is a learning and relating experience.

If at all possible, each person attending the Retreat should send in a separate form. This will avoid, confusion and allow us to have a more accurate count. Longhorn Recreation Lab Dear Youth Leaders and/or Assistants: Some of you may have heard in years past about Longhorn Recreation Lab located near Brownwood, Texas. This is the Laboratory for Leadership Training and Program Development. Sessions include Recreation in the Arts, Conflict Management, Outdoor Interpreta-

tion, Clowning, Song Leadership, Basketry, Games, Party Planning, and Square and Folk Dancing, plus a number of others.

As has been the case in the past few years, the Laboratory is offered in two formats: A weekend session and a week-long session. The weekend session is from March 9th through the 11th, and the week-long session is from March 11th through the 16th.

In years past this has proven to be beneficial to our leaders, however, you should not attend with the idea of "getting away from it all" and spending a week there just for a good time. Of course, you should enjoy yourself and meet a lot of new faces, but the PRIMARY reason you are going is to learn some new techniques that you can PUT INTO USE in your local lodge and with your young people. Unless you can do this, the time spent would have been worthless as far as your youth club and the young members under you are concerned. You can come back and say, "I had a great time and met a lot of nice people. It was much fun!" I'm sure that will have been the case, but how did it help you in your youth work?

The Supreme Lodge has approved attendance at this year's Longhorn Recreation Lab (LRL). The tuition involves an advance registration and the balance payable on arrival at the Lab. Both of these fees will be paid out of this office. If you plan to attend the weekend workshop and you plan to eat the evening meal at 6 p.m. that Friday, the extra meal is $4.25.

Please let me know in writing of your intention to attend either of these workshops, and if you intend to attend the weekend workshop, let me know whether you plan to be there by 6 p.m. March 9th so that we can add the cost of the meal to the balance of your tuition. REGISTRATION AND ALL ADVANCE REGISTRATION FEES AND BALANCE OF TUITION FEES WILL BE PAID AND HANDED OUT OF THIS OFFICE. Let me know your intentions NO LATER THAN February 28th. In addition to your name, include your home and business phones, if you have one, plus your complete address. Don't wait until the last minute.

Our next youth club meeting will be held March 4th. They also planned a kite-flying contest, which will be judged on the prettiest, oddest, smallest, most homemade and most high-flying. Remember, that all kites must be flying in order to be judged in the contest, so come and join us in the fun.

We started on our Easter project and also are practicing on our Easter Program.

Dear Readers, Lodge 24 held its regular monthly meeting at 7:30 p.m. February 8, 1984. There were 25 members and 2 visitors present.

After the meeting was called to order, the roll was called and the minutes were read by the secretary.

Under new business we discussed having a chili supper to be held February 11th from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the lodge. Afterwards, games were planned. Proceeds from this youth project will be used for the purchase of a video recorder.

We also discussed the District II Valentine's Skating Party to be held at the Skate Haven in Temple, February 19th. Everyone was urged to attend and bring a friend Our youth leader informed us of the upcoming dates for camp and YAD. After the meeting was adjourned, refreshments were served.

Birthdays for the month of February were for Craig Waits and Tracy Chervenka.

Lucky winners of the door prizes were Kim Schneider and Michael Harvell.

Dear Readers, The monthly meeting of the Lodge 39 Youth Club held its monthly meeting Sunday, February 12th.

We exchanged Valentines with each other and we set a date to go skating on the 25th of February.

After our meeting we were treated to a visit by "Freddie" the robot from the College Station Police Department. This was a time that was enjoyed by the youth and adults. To close out the day, we shared a potluck meal with the adults.

February 10 our youth club attended a dance at the New Tabor Lodge. It was enjoyed by everyone.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 88, on behalf of the entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of REINHOLD C. FEDERWISCH, SR., 64, of Houston, who died November 24, 1983, in Pasadena General Hospital. He was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 88 and Bethel United Church of Christ.

Brother Federwisch was born May 8, 1919 at Mart, Texas. His parents were Alvin and Annie Federwisch. He lived at Riesel, Texas, where he married Elda Fenske, February 12, 1941. He was in the motel business for twenty years and had also worked for Frizzell Pontiac, retiring May, 1982.

His survivors are wife, Elda Federwisch; two sons, Cecil H. and Reinhold Federwisch, Jr. and two daughters, Carolyn Schiller and Janice Federwisch, all of Houston.

The funeral service was held at Littlepage Funeral Home at Mart, Texas, with Rev. Barney Federwisch officiating. Interment was at the Riesel Cemetery.

JURICA, who passed away Thursday, January 12, 1984, at John Sealy Hospital in Galveston after being in

the hospital at Victoria and then transferred to Galveston, and who had nine operations within 4 1/2 month's time. He reached the age of 47 years, 6 months and 15 days.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, January 14 at 2 p.m. in the Moravia Catholic Church, with Rev. Benton A. Thurmond officiating.

Interment took place in the Moravia Catholic Cemetery.

Rosary was recited Friday, January 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the Schwenke-Baumgarten Funeral Chapel; it was led by Rev. Benton Thurmond.

Brother Eugene J. Jurica was born 27 June 1936 in Moravia Community to Ben Jurica, Sr. and Olga (Krause) Jurica. He attended school in Schulenburg. February 20, 1955 he married Almeda Ivy in Cistern.

In addition to Moravia, he resided in Schulenburg and Houston. A used car dealer, he was the owneroperator of Jurica's Used Cars in Schulenburg.

Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Jurica, Sr.; his wife, Almeda Jurica; a daughter, Deborah and son-in-law, Clarence Harabis of Shiner; a brother and sister-in-law, Ben and Electa Jurica, Jr. of Houston and one nephew.

Pallbearers were Otto Kocian, Jr., Edwin Earl Orsak, Jr., Ben Smolik, Jerome Hermis, M. B. Farris and John Matula.

Alan Zatopek, Jimmy Brosch, Ray Jurecka and Anton Orsak served as honorary pallbearers.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters, and SPJST Lodge No. 4.

The body lay in state at the Kubena Funeral Home until 9 a.m., Tuesday, January 17, when it was taken to the Sacred Heart Church for funeral services at 10 a.m. Burial was in the Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Frank J. Zabransky, who is president of Lodge 4, Hallettsville; three daughters, Miss Patricia Ann Zabransky and Miss Helen Agnes Zabransky, both of Hallettsville, and Mrs. Annie Marie Vahalik of Victoria; a sister, Mrs. Annie Zrzavy of Hallettsville; and two brothers, Henry Wagner of Sweet Home and Willie Wagner of Hallettsville.

Corpus Christi -The Texas Riviera

JUDGE ALEXANDER ROYCE STOUT who passed away Monday, January 16, 1984, in Waxahachie after an illness of several weeks.

Brother Stout was born February 27, 1900, in Boyce, Texas, the son of Benjamin F. and Annie Nesmith Stout. He graduated from Ennis High School in 1917 and then from the University of Texas Law School in 1923. He had a long and distinguished career as an attorney in a private practice in Ennis and Houston before he was elected to the position of County Judge of Ellis County. He also served two terms as State Representative in the 1920's.

He was appointed District Judge of Ellis County in 1938 and served for 31 years in that post. He served as City Attorney of Ennis before he was elected to any office.

He was one of Texas' most able and distinguished lawyers and was so recognized by his peers. He won two landmark cases, one in the 40th District Court of Ellis County and one before the United States Supreme Court. He was one of the two assistants to the then Attorney General of Texas Governor James Allred.

In 1940, he married Erma Newton of Waxahachie. Mrs. Stout preceded him in death in 1979.

In the 1950's he updated the Branch's Code of Criminal Procedure which was published in 1905. The two large volumes were bought by most criminal prosecutors and judges in Texas.

He was honored by the Waxahachie Lions Club for his half century in Lionism. In 1967 he was honored at a dinner party by 416 Waxahachians and many State Officials. He was lauded for his ability and great service to his hometown of Ennis, to Ellis County and the State of Texas.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 25.

His 44 years of public service are unparallelled in the history of Ellis County. He retired as District Judge of the 40th Judicial District in 1969, but continued to serve periodically for several years.

Judge Stout is survived by his son, LTC Anthony N. Stout (U.S. Army-Retired) of Cape Coral, Florida; his grandchildren, SP-4 Mark S. Stout of Fort Bragg, N.C., Terri L. Stout of Cape Coral, Fla. and Lon R. and Tonya L. Stout, both of Houston; four sisters, Mrs. Exa Moseley and Miss Annie Frank Stout of Ennis; Mrs. Mae Dunagan of Waxahachie (formerly of Midland) and Mrs. Elizabeth Heaton of Dallas, and several nieces and nephews.

A sparkling bayfront and endless beaches are what Corpus Christi, on the Texas Riviera, has to offer vacationers in a state that is generally known for its cowboys and cactus!

Downtown Corpus Christi boasts a glistening marina where businessmen can dock their sailboats, so that it's just a short hop from the office to the calming waters of the Bay. Picturesque sailboats, gliding through the blue waters, are a yearround sight since the average temperature is 72 degrees.

The downtown yacht basin is also home for numerous excursion boats.

For sightseeing, you can board either the Flagship, a 3-decked paddle-wheeler, or the Gulf Clipper for a morning, afternoon or evening cruise of the Bay and the harbor. For fishermen, there are a number of 4hour trips aboard the Captain Clark or the Star Trek, but, if you don't come back with enough for supper, you can buy shrimp right off the boats docked nearby or you can feast on seafood at a floating barge restaurant.

The marina rests at the foot of Corpus Christi's unique seawall, designed by the sculptor of Mount Rushmore, Gutzon Borglum; on the 14-foot high seawall, with steps right into the water, you can join the locals who eat their brown-bag lunches and feed the seagulls, or you can just stare out, mesmerized by the clanging of lines against masts, at the colorful sailboats that are available for rent. If you are more landlubber than sailor, "Surreys By The Sea" can fix you up with a pedalpowered surrey "with the fringe on top" for traveling to and fro along the seawall with the breeze blowing through your hair.

At the north end of the seawall is the Bayfront Arts and Sciences Park, anchored by the strikingly white and classy Art Museum of South Texas, which was designed by the renowned architect Phillip Johnson of New York. Right next door is the Corpus Christi Museum which, unlike any other in the world, caters to children with its touch tables, color-coded exhibit aisles and participation-in-history events. In addition to the Bayfront Plaza Convention Center which is home for the Corpus Christi Symphony and road show performances, the Harbor Playhouse has regularly scheduled plays, the most popular being the summer melodramas where playgoers actively participate by hissing and boo-ing and throwing popcorn at the villains.

Although Corpus Christi — in centuries past — was periodically wiped clean by hurricanes, the city points with pride to its Old Irishtown district featuring recently restored turn-ef-the-century homes.

At the south end of the seawall is the beginning of the lovely palmlined Ocean Drive, a curving boulevard near the water's edge which features palatial homes and mansions with perfectly manicured lawns.

Endless beaches are just minutes away from downtown Corpus Christi. In fact, the city is the gateway to Padre Island which has more than 110 miles of untouched beaches, the vast majority of which comprise a national seashore; as a result, the traveler to the Texas Riviera can spend hours upon hours swimming, sunbathing, beachcombing, picnicing or capturing on film the picture-perfect dunes blanketed with sea oats and beach morning glories.

When the sun and surf force visitors into a change of pace, a nice day's outing is a trip to the neighboring towns across Corpus Christi Bay. Driving down Mustang Island from Padre Island, the first stop is Port Aransas. This resort town claims to be the most diversified deepsea fishing headquarters in the northern hemisphere. The options include day-long fishing trips into the Gulf of Mexico for marlin, sailfish and king, or fishing from the jetties or the new Horace Caldwell Pier. Catches of the day — right from the boats — make Port Aransas' casual dining a seafpod lover's paradise.

Leaving Port Aransas, the trip on the ferry, with dolphins frolicking in the ship channel, provides visitors with an interlude of no-cost entertainment. The next stop on the circle around Corpus Christi Bay is Aransas Pass, "shrimp capital of the world." The trawlers at Conn Brown Harbor comprise the largest fleet on the Gulf of Mexico, and as a result shrimp lovers never miss the Shrimporee festival every October.

From Aransas Pass, it is only ten miles to Rockport, home of a thriving art colony and famous for picturesque wind-swept oak trees.

Birders from all over the world regularly travel to this seaside resort which is the home of the nearextinct whooping crane and hundreds of other species of, waterfowl and birds.

Heading back to Corpus Christi, the traveler encounters a most breathtaking sight. From atop the

The Czechoslovak Folk Ballet, Luenica, appeared in Temple about seven years ago and was well received. It is one of the performances sponsored by the Temple Community Concert Association, which earlier in the year sponsored the appearance of the Roger Wagner Chorale and the Russ Morgan Orchestra.

The Luenica performance will be held at Temple High School at 8 p.m.

March 29th. Tickets will be available to persons purchasing the 1984-85 Concert Series, and the Luenica Folk Ballet will be a "bonus" concert preceding the regular fall series and that series includes a dance and music company from the Scandinavian Countries (Scandia Festival '84), a brass ensemble (Empire Brass), and several other artists.

The total cost for the series of five concerts is $18 for adults and $10 for students. The entire family, no matter how large, can purchase the series for $36. Naturally, the Concert Association would like to sell as many season tickets as possible, but is making tickets available to the Luenica performance for those living outside a 50mile radius of Temple at a cost of $10 per ticket. These tickets can be purchased only at the door the night of the performance, as well as the season tickets.

This is an unique opportunity to see one of the finest European dance companies. The reviews from those cities where they have appeared have been excellent — Miami, Houston, Rome, Munich, and Sao Paulo in Brazil. The Houston Post, for example, called the performance "Fresh, exuberant, youthful and beautifully costumed".

This should be an excellent opportunity for everyone in the Czech

community throughout Central Texas and beyond to join, first of all, a fine concert series available within easy driving distance, and secondly, a wonderful opportunity to see the company of about 40 young Czech dancers. Here is an item of interest regarding the appearance of this group in Temple: The Supreme Lodge TENTATIVELY plans, pending the approval of the Series Management in New York City, to host the entire dance group at a late evening post-performance reception in the Supreme Lodge Building in Temple, complete with snacks and refreshments. If this does not materialize, we will let you know through the Vestnik, hopefully, well ahead of time.

It would be a fine opportunity to mingle with these performers, especially for those of you who speak Czech, although I'm sure that some of the young people speak English. Incidentally, the reception will have to take place around 11 p.m. after the performance and after all costumes and baggage have been packed.

It would be nice to see a nice representation of our people because we have received some criticism of not supporting those things directly linked to our Czech culture and heritage.

Cake Mixes Vary In Cost And Calories COLLEGE STATION - Not all cake mixes are created equal either in cost or calories, says a Texas A&1VI University Agricultural Extension Service foods and nutrition specialist.

Some packaged cake mixes can be economical and actually cost less than similar cakes baked from scratch, says Mary K. Sweeten. But "better quality" cake mixes can cost three times as much as simpler mixes and still require the addition of costly ingredients at home.

For example, a "butter" cake mix requires the addition of one-quarter pound of butter and three eggs, which would add about 75 cents to the cost of the cake. The shortening used in the cake mix is usually soy oil, so the only butter in the butter cake is added by the cook. yet the butter cake may cost up to 50 percent more than a competitive yellow cake mix, notes the specialist.

Research conducted by Cornell University Extension home economists compared "pudding mix" cakes with their plainer counterparts in the same product line and found that the richer texture of these cakes was due primarily to the cook's additions, says Sweeten.

They also found that nutritive value of the dry mixes are identical for protein, calories and fat, with the pudding mixes providing two extra grams of carbohydrate. But the finished pudding cake has twice as much fat, and 25 percent more calories than the plain layer cake.

The addition of extra eggs and oil to the pudding mix increases the calories as well as the cost of the cake, she says.

Sweeten suggests that consumers make it a habit to read the labels on mixes, since nutritional differences among cakes are surprisingly large.

The fat content of various cake mixes ranges from four to fourteen grams for one twelfth of the cake; the calories from 180 to 300 per slice; and the sodium from 270 to 375 milligrams per slice.

In general, angel food cake and white cake mixes, made without egg yolks, are low in fat and calories, and cake mixes that require additional oil or shortening are high, says Sweeten.

The good news for chocolate lovers is that chocolate cake mixes are not significantly higher in fat or calories than other flavors, adds the specialist.
