Pine Tree High School Senior

Saleem Assaf is one of about 850 students in the United States to win the annual National Council of Teachers of English Achievement Award in Writing, according to Roselee Sprouse, PTHS English lead teacher.

Assaf, 17, is the son of Atiyeh and Patricia Assaf, 1806 Swan. He plans to attend Rice University to study psychology and engineering.

should proceed without delay.

Yesterday-Today-Tomorrow — There are two days in every week

about which we should be kept free from fear and apprehension.

One of these days is yesterday with its mistakes and cares, its faults and blunders, its aches and pains. Yesterday has passed forever beyond our control.

All the money in the world cannot bring back yesterday. We cannot undo a single act we performed; we cannot erase a single word we said.

Yesterday is gone.

The other day we should not worry about is tomorrow with its possible adversaries, its burdens, its large promise and poor performance. Tomorrow is also beyond our immediate control.

Tomorrow's sun will rise, either in splendor or behind a mask of clouds — but it will rise. Until it does, we have no stake in tomorrow, for it is as yet unborn.

This leaves only one day — today.

Any man can fight the battles of just one day. It is only when you and I add the burdens of those two awful eternities — yesterday and tomorrow — that we break down.

It is not the experience of today that drives men mad — it is remorse or bitterness for something which happened yesterday and the dread of what tomorrow may bring.

Let us, therefore, live but one day at a time. ***

The trouble with some of us is that we want to accomplish many things, but are not willing to pay the price.

If life were a game in which the rewards were handed out on a silver platter to anyone who happened to ask for them, lots of folks would sleep in rose beds. However, unfortunately, we have to reckon with the thorns.

"He who would climb a tree must grasp its branches — not the blossoms," said Thackeray; this means that we must pull ourselves up over the rough places, and not expect simply to coast downhill all the time.

We get mostly what we go after — if we go after it hard enough.

About the only thing that has ever come into our life without effort is trouble; and much of that can be traced to a desire to take hold of the blossoms instead of grasping the branches.

We believe thorns serve a purpose. They teach us that even in plucking roses, one must go about it with care and skill and practical knowledge — or get stuck! *4.*

MY AMERICAN CREED I do not choose to be a common man. It is my right to be uncommon . . . if I can. I seek opportunity . . . not security. I do not wish to be a kept citizen, humbled and dulled by having the state look after me. I want to take the calculated risk; to dream and to build, to fail and to succeed. SUPREME LODGE

EXCERPTS FROM THE MINUTES OF THE FIRST REGULAR QUARTERLY MEETING OF THE SUPREME LODGE SPJST HELD JANUARY 9-12, 1984, AT THE HOME OFFICE IN TEMPLE, TEXAS. The meeting was called to order at 2 p.m. with all Supreme Lodge Members present: Nick A. Morris, Bernard M. Gebala, Leonard D. Mikeska, Jerry Mikulas, Jr., Sidney Kacir, Ben Trcalek-I, Henry E. Vitek-II, Cyrill Pokladnik-HI, Stanley Broz-IV, Louis Hanus-V, Matt S. Vanek-VI, Thelma Hrncir-VII. EMPLOYEES' SALARIES-The remainder of the audit was postponed for the purpose of considering recommendations for employees' salary adjustments. After due consideration, the recommended adjustments were approved.

Recess was taken at 2:45 p.m. so that the directors could complete their audit. The Supreme Lodge reconvened at 10 a.m. on January 10, 1984.

MINUTES-The minutes of the October 19-21, 1983 Supreme Lodge meeting were considered and accepted as presented on motion duly adopted.

REPORTS-The next item on the agenda was consideration of the Supreme Lodge officers' reports which were acknowledged and filed for record.

OLD BUSINESS RECOGNITION OF SALES REPRESENTATIVES-There was a discussion of the problem of attitude of some of our members concerning local sales representatives. It has been displayed in some areas that there is a lack of appreciation of the importance of sales efforts of local sales representatives. It was decided to prepare a computer listing that would inform each lodge as to the amount of the 8% lodge refund each of their sales representatives has generated. It was felt that this report might enhance the image of our sales force.

SPJST SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM-Report was made that for the 1984-85 school year, 86 Freshmen and 105 Undergraduate applications were received. It was decided to allocate $25,000 for scholarships plus any additional contributions donated to the scholarship fund.

It was agreed to reprint the new scholarship brochure for 1984-85 requiring scholarship applicants to have in force a permanent premiumpaying certificate of a minimum of $5,000.

NFCA SECTION MEETING-It was reported that the SPJST is hosting the NFCA Fraternal and Press and Public Relations Sections meetings in Austin, Texas on April 1, 2, and 3, 1984.

ANNUITY SALES TRAININGVice President Gebala reported on plans for training the sales representatives that will be authorized to sell our annuity products.

CONVENTION SECRETARIESSeveral individuals were nominated to serve as secretaries at the XXIV Convention. Additional time was allowed for nominations and a selection was to be made during the April SL Meeting.

YOUTH DEPARTMENT-Consideration was given to the suggestions and recommendations made by the District Youth Counselors in their meeting of November 19, 1983. The youth rules were approved as amended. The statewide youth leaders' retreat was authorized as recommended.

CALENDAR-A motion was adopted to again have an SPJST calendar f5r 1985.

Recess for the day was taken at 5:35 p.m. until Wednesday, January 11, 1984, at 9 a.m.

CONVENTION-Various items concerning the upcoming convention were discussed. It was agreed to extend invitations to a limited number of dignitaries and heads of other organizations.

VESTNIK-Decision was reached on a survey form that would be mailed to all Vestnik subscribers requiring return of a postage paid card to continue receiving the Vestnik. The proposed form and procedure was approved.

PREMIUM REFUNDS TO MEMBERS-There was a discussion on requesting convention action on setting up a procedure to allow an option for automatic paid up additions of life insurance in lieu of cash premium refunds.

DELINQUENT REAL ESTATE LOANS-The listing of six delinquent loans was considered and recommendations for action were approved.

FOURTH QUARTER INVESTMENTS-The investments as listed in Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska's report were ratified on motion duly passed. The minutes of meetings held concerning investments were approved.

MORTGAGE LOAN APPLICATIONS-The interest rate on new loans and assumptions was set at 11 1/2%. The loan allocation for the quarter was set at $250,000 per district.

LODGE BUILDING LOANSThere was a general discussion concerning lodge loans including a discussion of applicable interest rates.

NEW BUSINESS INCENTIVE TRIP-After discussion, a motion was approved to authorize Vice President Gebala to plan a trip for the 1984 Top Producers.

EDITOR RUDY SEFCIK-Editor Sefcik arrived at 4 p.m. and visited the Supreme Lodge meeting.

He brought up for future consideration the matter of the cover and size of the convention issue of the Vestnik and also discussed other matters pertaining to the Vestnik.

Recess for the day was taken at 5:20 p.m. until Thursday, January 12, 1984 at 9 a.m.

not a very good percentage out of some 128. A couple of issues back we published pictures of what the front cover and the first few pages of the book will look like. That's as close as we can get to the real thing at this time.

The following scale was adopted, effective January 1, 1984: 3% of the current certificate year midterminal reserve on permanent plans only, less $0.35 per premiumpaying certificate and less $1.60 per paid-up certificates. If the resulting refund is not at least $2.25, then no refund is to be paid.

TRANSFER OF FUNDS-The transfer of funds as provided in our By-Laws was authorized.

DIRECTORS' AUDIT-The Directors' Audit Report was given and revealed that all records were in order. The audit confirmed that the 1983 was an outstanding year for the Society in increase in assets, investments and overall progress. The Supreme Lodge officers were complimented for keeping a close watch on operation of the Society. The directors' audit report will be placed on record.

APRIL SUPREME LODGE MEETING-The next regular Supreme Lodge meeting was set to begin Tuesday, April 10, 1984, at 1 p.m.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 12:30 p.m.

John Agee

Meet Our New Actuary In last October's Supreme Lodge meeting, that Body appointed John Agee of Dallas as our new actuary.

John is a graduate of the University of Texas and has done post-graduate work at Northeastern University in Boston. He is a member of the American Academy of Actuaries and is an Associate in the Society of Actuaries.

John and Cynthia Agee have three children. A daughter is still in high school, one of the sons teaches school in Silverton, Texas, and the

John started as an actuary in 1960. He has worked for Occidental Life in California, Fidelity Union Life in Dallas, and became Chief Actuary for Fidelity Union in 1972.

In 1975 he became Chief Actuary at Lone Star Life in Dallas. In 1981 he started in the consulting business and in February of 1983 opened his own firm.

The Supreme Lodge welcomes John aboard the "SPJST Express" and is glad to utilize his expertise in the actuarial field. He has already rendered yeoman service.

"Plain Talk About Life Insurance"

He has served as editor of the Fraternal Monitor since 1965 and also serves as a consultant to fraternal benefit socie ties.

He will from time to time, contribute some timely "Plain Talk About Life Insurance" with his column in the Vestnik to help our members better understand their insurance. The time you spend reading these articles will certainly be to your benefit.

SAVING FOR RETIREMENT WITH AN SPJST IRA ANNUITY The 1981 Economic Recovery Tax Act (ERTA) offers a measure of tax relief for just about every taxpayer.

Heaven knows, we can use it. If you've been wondering how to make the most of this new law, you might consider building a bigger retirement nest egg with an IRA—an Individual Retirement Account.

Under the provisions of ERTA, if you earn an income, you can put up to $2,000 of it each year into an authorized IRA investment and take an immediate income tax deduction for the full amount. If you're married and your spouse doesn't earn an income, the limit is $2,250 (called a "spousal IRA"). If you and your spouse both earn incomes, you both can make the full $2,000 contribution to your own individual IRAs. It's like having your own taxfavored pension plan. The money goes in tax free, it accumulates tax free and, in fact, you pay no tax on it at all until you take it out at retirement.

IRAs aren't new, of course. It's just that, up until the passage of ERTA, they were available only to people who weren't covered by company pensions. That has all changed. Under ERTA, you can have an IRA even if you are a participant in a company-sponsored pension or profit-sharing plan. All workers — some 99 million of us — can now have an IRA. And with the generous contribution rules, just

about everyone who earns an income should take advantage of these incentives to save for retirement.

Consider, for instance, the incentive for non-working spouses to take on some part-time employment.

People who earn modest incomes are invited to put $2,000 of it — tax free — into an IRA. In many sit uations, people are able to earn income, save all of it for retirement, and not move the family's total income into a higher tax bracket.

That used to be a problem in cases where the second income was relatively small — but no more.

The IRA rules also make owning a small business easier than before.

For example, a spouse who has not been earning an income can now be hired to work in family businesses.

He/she must do legitimate work, such as typing, filing or keeping the books, but the income from those jobs can all go toward building a taxfavored retirement income fund.

How attractive is it to save for retirement through an IRA? Well, most middle-income taxpayers who can put $2,000 a year into an IRA will save anywhere from $500 to $1,000 annually on their income taxes (and you don't have to itemize to take the IRA deduction). IRA funds accumulate tax free. None of the interest earned goes to Uncle Sam at tax time; all of it can stay in the IRA, which means that your retirement fund grows much faster than it would in a fully taxed savings plan or investment. For example, someone in his/her mid-thirties who is earning, say, 10% on an IRA can count on having approximately $300,000 by age 65. Double that if a working spouse contributes the full amount to his/her own IRA earning 10% interest for the same period of time. (SPJST is currently yielding 10% %).

That's a tidy sum, don't you think?

And even though the money is taxed as income when it is withdrawn at retirement, the recipient should be in a much lower tax bracket by then, so it's still a most attractive proposition.

It's important to note one thing.

IRAs are a long-term investment.

There is a still 10% penalty on any funds taken out of an IRA before age 59'/2 — in addition to the normal income tax you'd have to pay. So don't put money into an IRA unless you can afford to leave it there until you retire. Also, withdrawals must start by age 70'/z and have to be at a fast enough rate to be completed by the end of your normal life expectancy.

At retirement, money from an IRA can be received as income (the usual method) or in a lump sum.

Most IRA owners arrange things so that their IRA payments begin just after they retire, when their regular earned incomes stop, so that the money is taxed at their newly reduced rates.

IRAs can be set up in a number of different ways. Insurance companies and fraternal benefit societies offer an IRA Flexible Premium Retirement Annuity (IRA Annuity, for short). Banks, savings and loans and credit unions have various types of IRA savings accounts or certificate of deposit arrangements. Mutual funds and other money management firms also have special IRA investment accounts.

It is important to point out that no

single retirement savings plan is best suited to every individual in every situation. Different financial needs and objectives, age and income levels for instance, can call for different approaches to retirement planning. Various factors such as safety of principal, yield, money management experience, administrative fees and the convenience and flexibility of both pay-in and pay-out methods should all be carefully considered in deciding which IRA investment is best for you.

For many people, though, the IRA Annuity earns high marks on all counts. It's a simple approach which gives the owner (annuitant) considerable leeway in deciding how much money to put into an IRA, how often to do it and how to take it out when the time comes. For example, In addition, beyond writing premium checks, the IRA owner has no money management or administrative responsibilities with an IRA Annuity. The Society's investment management and service departments do all that. And, over the years, IRA Annuities interest earnings have performed competitively with other comparable IRA investment vehicles.

But perhaps the most attractive features of an IRA Annuity for most people are the guarantees provided by the Society. There is no risk involved.

Safety of principal is assured, as are a minimum yield and a preretirement death benefit for your named beneficiary (usually the cash value and accumulated interest).

The most important guarantee provided by an IRA Annuity, however, is a specific income which can never be outlived by you or by your beneficiary. After all, creating a guaranteed income is what an annuity is all about and no other IRA investment even comes close.

The 1981 Economic Recovery Tax Act radically changed the area of tax-favored retirement planning.

The message from the government is clear: save for your own retirement; don't depend on Social Security benefits or company pension plans alone to see you through. The program will be presented by Thelma Hrncir, State Project Coordinator, District V Director Louis Hanus, Mrs. Judy Hay, Community Relations Director, and other DHR workers in the Houston area.

Handling local arrangements is Lodge 172 President Albert Risinger.

The SPJST slide presentation, "Other People's Children" will be shown. Local needs will be explained by the DHR staff, and the group will have ample question/answer time.

Recommended By-law Changes To The SPJST By-law Committee Under "PREAMBLE" on p. 2, add the following: To encourage and promote charitable contributions to worthy causes by all levels of the Society, with special attention paid to those causes that various levels of government would otherwise have to fund, namely, city/municipal, county, state and federal.

2. To provide sick benefits and assistance primarily to those members in need, and secondarily, to deserving citizens in the community.

To foster and engage to whatever degree possible the time-honored American concept of volunteerism whenever and wherever possible.

2. Under "MEMBERSHIP" on p.

3, the first sentence should read "Persons can become members .

We have only two sexes so there is no use making any differentiation between the two.

3. In Article 1(k), re-word as follows: "The word 'social member' means a member who cannot be insured at standard rates because of age or health, or who has a prematurely paid-up certificate of less than $500.00 and pays local lodge dues and assessments, if any, annually in advance."

4. At the end of Article 4(e)3, add the following: "... shall be accepted, however, a transferee elected delegate in a former lodge, is not automatically a delegate in the new lodge, but may be duly elected to that position."

5. Article 6(b) is not necessary because it repeats what is already contained in Article 33(a)5 VI. 6. In Article 12(c), change to read as follows: "A list of the names of elected delegates and the number of votes each lodge and delegate is entitled to will be made available to the delegates at the beginning of the convention. (In other words, time does not have to be consumed in reading this long list).

7. Add to Art. 20(e) the words, "upon receipt". This should dispel the question, once and for all, whether the secretary of the ByLaw Committee accumulates proposals and then after a time sends them to the Vestnik, or whether she (he) forwards them to the Vestnik immediately after receiving them.

8. Under Art. 20(b) and 20(d), resolve the time period difference to either 30 days OR 60 days (two months), probably 60 days in both articles. (You still have 20(c) which covers those proposals submitted AFTER 60 days.)

9. Add to Art. 24 the words, "As stipulated in Art. 103(g)". The latter article spells out the exact procedure for dealing with questionable material to the Vestnik.

10. Replace Article 37(j) with the following article: The president's office is responsible for appropriate publicity pertaining to conventions.

11. Delete the last phrase in Art. 39(a) pertaining to the duties of the secretary-treasurer, so that the last sentence reads: "He receives, attends to, and replies to all correspondence, with the exception of

letters written to other officers."

(Delete: "which he delivers to them unopened"). This is a holdover from a previous period when there was some misunderstanding about who opens whose mail.

12. Article 43(a) could be deleted because it's a repeat of that article under "DIRECTORS" on p. 3.

13. Under Art. 43(d) replace the word "demand" with the word "review". This word is also a holdover from a previous period and is no longer "in tune" with present Supreme. Lodge practices.

14. Under Art. 44(d) add a new paragraph as follows: "In the event of the resignation of the president between district meetings, the 1st vice president will automatically assume that office. Any other positions vacated between district meetings shall be filled by a person designated by a majority of the other district officers who will then seek ratification of their appointment at the next district meeting.

15. Somewhere in Article 45 (probably a new (d) under "LOCAL LODGES", insert the following: All lodges owning lodge facilities must secure and maintain Liability and Workmen's Compensation coverage and have the carrier/insuror furnish proof of such coverage to the Supreme Lodge. This includes those lodges who lease a facility for a lodge function.

16. Also under Art. 45 (probably a new e), add the following; Local lodges may not dispose of any property, real or otherwise, or any resources, financial or otherwise, so that any gain or benefit enures to any individual member of that lodge.

17. Make the present article under 46(a) and add new (b) as follows: "A member of a lodge with no local dues is automatically an active member." This should settle the question about the status of those members who are members of lodges with no local lodge dues.

18. In Article 54(f) re-word as follows: Officers and committees are installed in the regular meeting following the annual meeting or at a time deemed most expedient to the lodge, however, failure to do so does not affect any of the positions. Some people still have the mistaken notion that a person holding a position is not legally entitled to function in that position unless they have been installed. The installation ceremonies are merely a ritual that we try to adhere to, but it has no basis insofar as acting in an official capacity is concerned.

19. Add the following phrase to the end of Art. 81: ". . . for membership in that lodge."

20. Delete all of Art. 84(a), because technically speaking, once a certificate is signed by the president and secretary-treasurer of the Society here in the Home Office, that member is automatically covered by SPJST insurance. It should not be necessary to affix the signature of any of the local lodge officers to validate the certificate.

Whether he is acceptable in any particular lodge is still up to the members of the lodge (Art. 83), but the delivery of the certificate to the new member should not be delayed until the signature of two lodge officers are affixed to it. This sometimes involves waiting until the next lodge meeting, which could be a month away, or could be three months away. State authorities

would not look with favor upon the non-delivery or late delivery of a certificate that a member, applied for, paid for, and issued out of the Home Office. Effective immediately.

21. In Article 85, re-word as follows: Initiation of new members may be done at a time and date convenient to the local lodge and the new members, however, failure to do so in no way affects the status of the members. (Ditto the same reason as in No. 18 above.)

Delete all of Article 86 because no pledge exists as stated and mandated in that article. Some of the provisions are contained in either the application for insurance or the certificate itself.

23. Combine and re-word Articles 89(a) and (b) into one article to read as follows: "The amount of insurance retained by the Society shall be determined by the Supreme Lodge, which will cede any amount in excess of that amount." Expl: The Supreme Lodge presently, and has been, determining the amount of insurance retention by the Society, so this needs to be spelled out. If we wish to consult with the Actuary, we will do so, but this does not have to be in the by-laws.

24. Re-word Article 115 as follows: "Neither the Supreme Lodge nor any member of the Supreme Lodge, nor district officer, nor any local lodge or its officers, nor sales representatives, nor any committees, standing or otherwise, no member or group of members at any level, have the power or right to disregard any part of the constitution and by-laws nor claim any authority not conferred by these by-laws. This constitution and by-laws bind all members and beneficiaries of members."

25. Delete Article 119(c) because no statement as mandated and contained in that article exists for the applicant to sign. Similar wording, however, does appear in either the application or the certificate itself.

26. Re-word Article 119(d) as follows: "The application for membership, medical examination, Charter of Incorporation, constitution and by-laws of the Society (as may be amended), and rules and regulations of the local lodge, if any, and as may be amended, and benefit certificate (contract) constitute the agreement between the member and the Society.

27. Add new Article 5(b)4 as follows: Only one (1) reimbursement for mileage per household will be paid. (This is following the practice spelled out by the Finance Committee and followed in the 1980 Convention). Effective immediately.

The above recommendations were forwarded to the secretary of the By-Law Committee the 16th of January.

6, Cottonwood Approves Donations

The regular monthly meeting of Lodge 6 held Sunday, February 5 at 3 p.m. was called to order by President Robert Dobecka.

Shirley Dobecka and Elaine Stuckly led the membership in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Shirley then led the SPJST Pledge.

Secretary Barbara Hykel read the minutes of the previous meeting.

They were approved as read.

Correspondence was read from the Supreme Lodge and Mary Barkley's Aerobic Dance for the American Heart Association.

All other reports were read and approved.

Sister Willie Mae Schuetz gave the youth club report. The club took four cakes to the Rest Home February 1st for their Birthday Party. The Valentine Party will be Friday, February 10 and a Valentine Card contest. The youngsters will be making Easter rabbits for the Rest Home and start practicing on their Easter Program. The youth club picked the King and Queen; they are Darrell Uptmor and Shirley Dobecka. Kevin Dobecka will be duke and Tammie Dobecka will be duchess. Their club donated glass and paper sacks to various organizations. Terry Hykel brought the birthday cake.

Brother Johnny Krizan gave the Board of Trustees' report. They held their election of officers and they are Johnny Krizan, chairman of the Board; George Straten, co-chairman; and Robert Dobecka, secretary/treasurer. The Board set the following dates for painting the inside of the hall; they are each Friday night in February at 7 p.m.; and Saturday February 18th and 25th beginning about 8:30. Items up for recommendations are donations to the Theresa Dobecka Scholarship Fund, American Heart Assocation, and the SPJST Child Abuse Program. They were all approved by the membership.

Two new adult members accepted were Benny Mynar and David Schroeder.

Door prizes drawn were Francis Lehmann—not present, $10 —Larry Lovecky — not present, $10 —Raymond P. Soukup—not present; and the $2 door prize was won

by Terry Hykel.

The next Boara of Trustees' meeting will be Friday, March 2; and the next regular lodge meeting will be Sunday, March 4 at 3 p.m.

Everyone is asked to help in the painting of the hall's interior when they can. The dates are listed above as to when we will be painting; your help will be appreciated deeply. I hope to see you on workdays.

We have much sickness in our community mostly the elder ones; it is sad to see the pioneers leave us. I am sending the obituary of Mrs. Mary Merta who was the mother-inlaw of our Treasurer Annimae Merta and mother of Mrs. Martha Kulcak of the El Campo-Hillje lodge.

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Merta, age 91, were held at 10 a.m.

January 18, 1984 in St. John's Catholic Church at Taiton with Monsignor J. A. Petru officiating. Burial was in St. John's Cemetery under the direction of Triska Funeral Home. A rosary was recited in the Triska Chapel at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Mrs. Merta, a resident of Taiton for the past 77 years, died Monday in El Campo Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness.

She was born in Moravia, Czechoslovakia 26 March 1892, the daughter of the late Anton and Marie (Hofer) Koudela.

Survivors include six daughters, Martha Kuleak, Bettie Priesmeyer and Mary Osina, all of El Campo, Lillie Janek of Floresville, Lucille Mach of Houston and Stella Stewart of Pasadena, Texas; a son, Pete Merta, Jr. of Taiton; two sisters, Antonia Muzik of Lake Jackson and Bertha Riha of El Campo; a brother, Joe Koudela of El Campo; 42 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

Her grandsons served as pallbearers.

May she rest in eternal peace.

Dear Members: They tell me that Rosalee Kostom is home and doing fine. Keep up the good work so you can be among us soon again because you are missed.

It seems that Margaret Liebscher is still in the Spring Branch Hospital. We hope that you will be home and doing better by the time you read this!

The January 28th dance was hosted by Earline Hoffman; she greeted the people and seated them.

She had Gus Urbanovsky selling tickets and had Ann Urbanovsky and Tillie Helmcamp taking the tickets at the door and greeting the folks with a smile.

For the February 4th dance were the Knights of Dixie playing music. I will have to find out who had it and report it later because I was going out of town February 6th, 7th and 8th with Susan and some of her classmates to State Board for RN; they were taking mother to cook for them because they were going to have tests in the mornings for so many hours, out for lunch, and tests again in the afternoon; since it was to be in Galveston we had reserved a condo right on the seawall; I hope it doesn't rain because I don't mind the cold.

Well, Kathy Trefell came home happy as a lark from her trip to Lake Tahoe, Nevada with her son, Dusty Rhodes and his wife and daughter. It seems that her granddaughter kept Kathy busy, but grandma enjoyed every bit of it.

It seems that John Vasula had a bicycle accident last Sunday and ended up in Heights Hospital with a broken hip. Brother John, it looks like your bicycle riding will have to be postponed for a while.

The February 10th dance held Friday with The Rounders playing country/western music was a casual dress affair. Saturday, February 11th with Lee Roy Matocha playing variety music was also a casual dress affair.

Then Sunday, February 12th (our lodge's 19th anniversary which is in the past) was scheduled with a lunch consisting of braised beef, rice with gravy, beans and peach half; a free dance from 5 to 9 p.m. with a casual dress code affair. The Birthday Club Sisters had the pastries for sale, and the Choral Club, also Dramatic Club both had the money-making project fund. All the things donated to these clubs was appreciated very much.

The Czech Dramatic Club Hlahol has scheduled Sunday, April 29th for their presentation of a hilarious Czech comedy. Hlahol has put on many good comedies and musicals in the past, and this new presentation should surpass even those. Hlahol tries to keep the rich Czech language alive, and, we of Czech ancestry, should do our best to support this activity; so, mark your calendars already now and hlep spread the word around to your friends and neighbors to make arrangements to attend 2 p.m.

Sunday, April 29th at SPJST Lodge 88 Pokrok, Houston. In future editions we will be writing more about this Czech comedy.

1111111111111111■11111■11 STATEWIDE YOUTH LEADERS' RETREAT Our Statewide Youth Leaders' Retreat for 1984 is set for Saturday, March 24th, and Sunday, March 25th. We will probably start around 9 a.m. Saturday morning and the retreat will be over after the noon meal Sunday.

The site of this year's retreat is Camp Lone Star near La Grange.

The facilities are very nice and we think that you will be pleased with the surroundings, which should be very conducive to the learning process. All DYC's, Assistant DYC's, Youth Leaders and Assistants, plus anyone else directly involved in our youth program is welcome to attend; however, this occasion is not to be considered a weekend vacation, but as a period of learning and relating. What you will learn should then be applied in your activities and work with the youth.

Spouses directly involved with the youth are welcome. The accommodations are limited so other than the seven DYC's, the selections will

have to be based on a need-to-know and eventual-use basis, as well as a first-come-first-served basis, with a deadline of March 5, 1984. Those attending other than as outlined above or as guests will be assessed a charge of $45.90 per person, provided accomodations are available.

Camp Lone Star is located southeast of La Grange. You will need to follow the sign that is alongside the highway just after you cross the iron bridge across the Colorado River going south out of La Grange on Hwy 77 and before you ascend the bluff.

There will be no meal available Friday, so if you intend to arrive Friday evening, you need to either eat beforehand or bring a light snack. Kitchen facilities will not be open Friday night. The first meal served will be breakfast Saturday morning. If you don't arrive in time for breakfast at either 7:30 or 8 a.m., your first meal will be the noon lunch Saturday.

The Supreme Lodge will pay round trip mileage for (1) car from a lodge, plus camp costs, which include all meals and lodging.

However, no mileage reimbursement will be paid for those who do not arrive in time for the start of Saturday's activities or to those who leave before noon Suday. We plan to start the day's activities at 9 a.m.

SHARP Saturday. Bring note pads and pencils. A full day and a half's activities are being planned, including some evening functions.

PLEASE—no alcoholic beverages on camp premises. This is a learning and relating experience.

The House of Representatives consists of 150 legislative districts, represented by that many members of the House of Representatives.

The State Senate is made up of 31 senators, representing that many senatorial districts. Senators are elected for 4-year terms; the presiding officer of the Senate is the lieutenant governor who is currently William P. Hobby of Houston.

Texas has had four Capitol buildings in Austin. The second Capitol building burned November 9, 1881. The third Capitol building burned September 30, 1899. The cornerstone of the current Capitol building was laid March 2, 1885. The dedication of the new Capitol took place May 18, 1888. It is situated on 25.96 acres of land and is modeled on the same lines as our National Capitol in Washington, D.C. It is 566.5 ft. long, 288 ft. 10 in. wide and"' towers 308 ft. 4 in. from the grade line to the top of the star of the statue. The exterior walls were built with more than 15,000 carloads of red granite, hauled in over 75 miles from the quarries of Burnet County.

The statue at the top of the Capitol is the Goddess of Liberty. It was cast of zinc by the Friedley-Voshardt Company of Chicago.

At the dedication ceremonies one of the speeches was given by the Honorable Temple Houston, who was a State Senator at the time and the illustrious son of an illustrious father, General Sam Houston. He accepted the building on behalf of the people of Texas.

The Capitol grounds contain approximately 500 trees, about 50 varieties being native to Texas. A pecan tree planted in 1945 in soil from the 254 counties of Texas stands on the west side of the north entrance in memory of the heroic Texans who died in World War II. The Governor's Mansion is the oldest of all buildings in the Capitol complex, having been erected in 1856. It occupies the entire block between 10th and 11th Streets and between Colorado and Lavaca Streets and is one block west from the entrance of the Capitol grounds.

The Capitol building ("Capitol Square") is a 4-block area bound by 11th, Colorado, 13th and Brazos Streets, with Congress Avenue intersecting north and south.

HEAD OF THE YOUTH DEPARTMENT Longhorn Recreation Lab Dear Youth Leaders and/or Assistants: Some of you may have heard in years past about Longhorn Recreation Lab located near Brownwood, Texas. This is the Laboratory for Leadership Training and Program Development. Sessions include Recreation in the Arts, Conflict Management, Outdoor Interpretation, Clowning, Song Leadership, Basketry, Games, Party Planning, and Square and Folk Dancing, plus a number of others.

As has been the case in the past few years, the Laboratory is offered in two formats: A weekend session and a week-long session. The weekend session is from March 9th through the 11th, and the week-long

In years past this has proven to be beneficial to our leaders, however, you should not attend with the idea of "getting away from it all" and spending a week there just for a good time. Of course, you should enjoy yourself and meet a lot of new faces, but the PRIMARY reason you are going is to learn some new techniques that you can PUT INTO USE in your local lodge and with your young people. Unless you can do this, the time spent would have been worthless as far as your youth club and the young members under you are concerned. You can come back and say, "I had a great time and met a lot of nice people. It was much fun!" I'm sure that will have been the case, but how did it help you in your youth work?

The Supreme Lodge has approved attendance at this year's Longhorn Recreation Lab (LRL). The tuition involves an advance registration and the balance payable on arrival at the Lab. Both of these fees will be paid out of this office. If you plan to attend the weekend workshop and you plan to eat the evening meal at 6 p.m. that Friday, the extra meal is $4.25.

Please let me know in writing of your intention to attend either of these workshops, and if you intend to attend the weekend workshop, let me know whether you plan to be there by 6 p.m. March 9th so that we can add the cost of the meal to the balance of your tuition. REGISTRATION AND ALL ADVANCE REGISTRATION FEES AND BALANCE OF TUITION FEES WILL BE PAID AND HANDED OUT OF THIS OFFICE. Let me know your intentions NO LATER THAN February 28th. In addition to your name, include your home and business phones, if you have one, plus your complete address. Don't wait until the last minute.

In addition, we will pay your round-trip mileage from your home to the Lab. Let me know soon if you are interested and I will mail you a brochure with complete information.

We are limiting this to two youth leaders from each district, and this will be determined on a first-comefirst-served basis.

I will then ask some of you who have attended LRL to either demonstrate and/or report on what you learned sometime during our Statewide Youth Leaders' Retreat at Camp Lone Star near LaGrange on March 24th and 25th. If two of you are going from the same general area, we would ask that you travel together in order to save on mileage, or if you wish to travel to the other person's house, that will be satisfactory and you would be paid the miles from your house to the other person's house.

From the Youth Members LODGE 6, COTTONWOOD YOUTH CLUB NEWS The youth club held their monthly meeting February 5, 1984.

They brought cakes to the Rest Home February 1st and will be taking cakes again March 7th. They will be delivering Valentines to the residents at the Rest Home during Valentine's Day at 7 p.m.

The club will be making Easter rabbits for the rest home, and they will start practicing on the Easter Program.

At the next meeting, we will have a kite-flying contest.

Birthdays for the month of Feb-

ruary were for Stephanie Mynar and Tammy Mynar.

The club elected their king and queen; they are Darrell Uptmor and Shirley Dobecka. Their duke and duchess will be Kevin Dobecka and Tammi Dobecka.

Sister Annie was born in Bryan, Texas and lived in Bellmead since 1946. She was married to Charlie Soukup, our departed brother, who died in 1979. She was a member of St. Joseph's Church, Catholic Daughters of America and a member of SPJST since June 1955.

Sister Annie is survived by a son, Benny Soukup of Waco; two daughters, Rudie Nowlin and Gracie Soukup of Waco; four grandchilren; and several greatgrandchildren.

Brother Gaydosik served as an officer of Lodge 42 for many years and also served as appraiser for RVOS Lodge 18 for about 20 years.

Saturday, December 31 at the Schmidt Funeral Home in Brookshire with Rev. Thomas Price officiating. Interment was in the Pattison Cemetery.

Brother George was a very active civic member. He helped organize the Beverly Hills Volunteer Fire Department in 1962 and was elected fire chief. He became fire marshall for McLennan County in 1964 and held this office until his death.

Brother Munos was born in Perry, Texas. He served in the Navy during World War II. He took an active part in the Robinson United Methodist Church and was a charter member of Beverly Hills Lions Club. He was a life member of University Junior High School PTA, member of American Legion Post No. 440 and an SPJST member since April 1977.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 47, Seaton, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother WYEMAN LAMB, who passed away in a Temple hospital 13 January 1984, at the age of 62 years.

Brother Lamb was born in Copperas Cove and had lived in Bell County most of his life. A graduate of Temple High School, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He had been an employee of Stewart Paint Company of Temple for the past 20 years.

He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, a 32nd degree Mason, and a member of the Shriners.

Survivors include his widow, Geraldine Lamb of Belton; a sister, Mrs. R. C. Tate of Temple.

Services were held at 3 p.m.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY On behalf of the membership of Lodge 65, I wish to express sympathy to the family of our departed sister HELEN JULIA (KOSTKA) THAMM who passed away January 13, 1984 at the age of 89.

Sister Thamm was born May 22, 1894 in Kladno, Czechoslovakia. After she came to America she married Fred Thamm May 16, 1914.

In 1927 they made their home in the Eastgate community in Liberty County where they operated a dairy and raised cotton.

She is survived by five sons; Ed of Louisiana, Rudolph of Houston, August and Herbert of Channelview, and Hans of Dayton; five daughters, Martha Page of Humble, Helen Ewing of Tenaha, Sylvia Patterson of Bastrop, Mary Love of Conroe and Pauline Simmons of Highlands; two brothers, Joe Kostka of Dickinson and Ed Kostka of Channelview and three sisters, Silvie Kelarek of Houston, Agnes Doskocil of Crosby, and Bessie Vesley of Floral City, Florida; 32 grandchildren; 62 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred, and her first son, Fritz.

Services were January 16, 1984 under the direction of Sterling Funeral Home with Rev. Sam Knight officiating. She was laid to rest in San Jacinto Memorial Park.

Grandsons were pallbearers.

Brother Jochec was born June 6, 1935 in Cameron, Texas. He was a tile layer for Mackey Tile Co., and also served in the military services.

He grew up and attended school in Eola, Texas and moved to San Angelo in 1956.

Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Pete Jochec, of San Angelo; two brothers, Jimmie and Alfonse Jochec both of San Angelo; and a twin sister Rose Mary Lewellen of San Angelo. He is also survived by a special friend Mozelle Sword; five nieces and two nephews.

Pallbearers were James Perkins, Gilbert Kubenka, Henry Henkhaus, John Lewellen, Harvey Jochec, Roy Shiller. Honorary pallbearers were the tile setters at Kilgore Tile and Floor Covering Company.

A 50-year resident of Baytown, Brother Kubala was a retired employee of the School District and a member of the First Baptist Church of Baytown and of the SPJST. They also celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary 18 November 1983.

He was a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church. He retired from Cameron Iron Works after 31 years of service. He was a veteran of World War II, a member of St. Theresa's Men's Club and a social member of SPJST Lodge No. 88, Houston.

Woods, and Janice and Joe Lester; four grandchildren; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John Grizzaffi, Sr. Services were at 10 a.m. Friday, February 3, at St. Theresa Catholic Church, with Rev. Dominic Pistone, celebrant. A Rosary was recited at St. Theresa Catholic Church Thursday night at 8 p.m. Interment was in the Garden of Gethsemani.

NEWSBRIEF V. H. (Vaclav) Batina, 89, passed away in Bastrop Memorial Hospital on February 8, 1984. Funeral services were held from the St. Paul Catholic Church in Smithville on Saturday, February 11th, with burial in the Oak Hill Cemetery near Smithville. The SPJST Supreme Lodge was represented by SL President Nick A. Morris, who spoke in the church and at the cemetery on behalf of the SPJST. Bro. Barina was active most of his adult life in his local lodge, serving many years as president. He served as District I

V. H. (Vaclav) Baiina Organizer in the 50's and 60's (1957 through 1964) under former Vice President Joe B. HejnY. Bro. Barina originally joined Lodge 52 in Bastrop County on September 11, 1921, and that lodge later merged with Lodge 38 near Smithville in June of 1944 to form the present Lodge. 38 Osveta in the Kovar Community.

Bro. Barina is survived by his wife, Amalie ("Mollie") (nee MareA), seven daughters and a host of grandchildren. He was a veteran of World War I, saw combat in Europe and was personally cited for bravery by General Of The Armies John J. Pershing, Commander-in-Chief of the American Expeditionary Forces in Europe. He was an uncle, by marriage, to SL President Morris.

County Czech Workshop To Be Held March 3 Victoria

A Czech workshop will be held Saturday, March 3, 1984 at DoNuts and More located at 1901 Houston

Hiway in Victoria, Texas. The time will be 10 a.m. until Participants are urged to be prepared to spend the day. Motels are located nearby for people who need to spend the night.

The advance registration fee is $8. Registration the day of the workshop will be $10. Your registration fee includes a buffet luncheon and coffee breaks during the day.

All checks for advance registration are to be made payable to Victoria County Czech Workshop and are to be mailed to Mrs. Doris Obsta, 4306 Guy Grant Road, Victoria, Texas 77904. Deadline for advance registration is February 22, 1984. There should be only one name per registration.

Those planning to attend are asked to furnish the chairmen of this workshop with at least five Czech surname on which personal genealogical research is being conducted. Genealogical Workshop

The Historical Society of the Dallas Czech Club is sponsoring what is believed to be the first Czech Genealogical Workshop in the Dallas area. The workshop will be held Sunday March 11, 1984 from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Czech Club, 4930 Military Parkway, Dallas, Texas 75227. This is an opportunity for you to learn about Czech genealogy and history. Topics to be covered include researching census and local records, how to get started in genealogical research, mail order research in Czechoslovakia, maps, ship passenger lists, and the history of the Moravian Valachs. This is an opportunity for beginners and advanced researchers to get together to share experiences and learn from one another.

All those interested in Czech genealogy, history, and culture are

Thoughts from Tyr§ We want to inoculate in the heart and mind of every Sokol member the basic principles of human dignity; to create in each individual a fearless spirit; a determination to contribute to the national welfare; and generally to develop out of the membership physically and morally healthy sons and daughters of the nation. We want to lead our youth to higher goals and to prepare them not only for their responsibilities to the Sokol, but their reponsibilities to their families and the nation. We want the spirit of Sokol brotherhood to prevail among us so that working together, cooperate with our leadership, respect our older members, see to it that every member of a Sokol family is also a Sokol member, and support the Sokol program which helps each man and woman to prepare seriously for his or her place in society.

The true Sokol critic is not interested in personalities as much as he is in issues. Not "who" is involved, but "what." The man derives genuine pleasure from every task well done and does not fail to compliment the doer. He is cheered by every evidence of improvement.

The good of the whole is dearer to him than the glory of the individual and he brings to the Sokol the spirit of real altruism. Such a Sokol critic is a member whom we should highly honor, for he is invaluable ..

A special appeal to you, young men and women, to do penance, to emerge from your clubs and homes of entertainment, to don gymnastic outfits and join the Sokol. Make yourselves strong, sound for your own good and use the energy for the entire nation.. Begin today to recover what you have neglected. Strive for real renaissance of yourselves . . . live a heartier, fuller and finer life . .

A fact that we shall always retain in our minds is that everything does not always have to be arranged as it was done up to now and we knew it to be done in the past . . .

Not one nation, large or small, as many as there have been, died in its full vigor and soundness, but fell when it became decrepit, indolent and frivolous .. .

We should be constantly aware that it is always possible to progress and improve and that everything that has been done could have been done in other ways, perhaps even better ... As a matter of fact, it would be difficult to find anything that is so perfect, that it could not be improved in some way. If a way for improvement does not seem apparent, it would be correct to assume that it was not the fact that perfection had been attained, but that a weakness is human nature that hinders every progress, even in public life, is the sworn hindrance and obstacle. This weakness is called satisfaction. Indeed, satisfaction is that heavy leaden braid that must be cut off immediately, not only that we may move our head freely, but also to think clearly .. .

We know how men like to hide behind a mountain of empty words, rather than think originally, or participate in active work .. .

In a great cause it is proper to constantly plan ahead, rather than repose in a circumscribed self-satisfaction .. .

Regardless how far we have advanced, let it not prevent, us from thinking and looking ahead, to see

• Keep a first aid kit in work areas, on the tractor, in the combine, in the shop.

• Know the basics of first aid, including CPR.

• Keep emergency numbers close to the telephone and teach your children how to use them.

• Learn what to do if someone becomes caught in machinery.

• Prevent accidents and maintain good health habits.

We do not want the spectators to disappear, but to participate, in relays, in the athletic competitions and to develop themselves by years of training .. .

Let us always remember that we have done nothing for our cause, as long as we think only of ourselves and selfishly save everything for our own cause . . .

To whatever dimension the Sokol movement will be extended, this can be achieved only through the enlightened effort of our devoted Sokol instructors and directors. That is, the growth, dynamism and progress of the Sokol movement depends on the ability, knowledge and personal sacrifice of our present and future educational directors and instructors; on the other hand, the lack of courage, knowledge and determination and other personal qualities of these workers positively means the decline of the Sokol movement .. .

Always have courage in your heart, strength in your arms and your country in your mind .. .

If in the young and American-educated generations of Sokol functionaries and officers the sources of new ideas are disappearing and if we begin now to look to and imitate other so-called physical education or gymnastic methods instead of creating our own values around our Sokol standards and goals, then we shall not be able to survive as a Sokol organization ... Sokol stresses physical fitness as a necessity for a SOUND MIND. Only a physically and mentally fit person can be a total asset to his nation. The Sokol movement is based on voluntary discipline, which is the guiding force in training, and not blind obedience to any philosophy or teaching. Sokols believe in group training more than the emphasis on the individual. In the Sokol, all members can find a place in the activities, from the young to the old.

It is rational that now, when young people may have to face problems harder than we faced, we are giving up the study of how the Romans and Greeks prevailed magnificently in the barbaric world; the study, too, of how that triumph ended, how a slackness and softness finally came over them to their ruin? In the end, more than they wanted freedom, they wanted security, a comfortable life, and they lost all . . . security and comfort and freedom.

NATIONAL ANTHEMS National songs are songs of gladness, and they express a deep feeling of love for one's country. Our National Anthem, "The Star Spangled Banner" is such a song, the most important one of all. It was our American Flag flying over Fort McHenry, in Baltimore, during the War of 1812, which inspired Francis Scott Key to write the words, "Oh, say can you see, by the dawn's early light." He was being held prisoner by the British at the time. The music was composed by John Stafford Smith.

One of our most loved patriotic songs, is, "My Country "Tis of Thee." It was written in the same year as our National Anthem by a divinity student, Frances Smith. No one knows where the music came from, but it is believed to have been taken from an old German songbook. The word "My" made it the big hit it became, for it gave one the feeling that it was my country, my very own country and we were all a part of it.

The song is immortal and will never die out. There are

other songs that are revered like, "God' Bless America," by the New York song writer, Irving Berlin.

The National Anthem of Czechoslovakia is made up of two songs, the Czech song, "Kde Domov Mtij" (Where Is My Home?) and the Slovak song, "Nad Tatrou Sa Blyska" (Over The Tatra Mountains Lightning Is Flashing). The Czechs were not under the shadows of the High Tatras. They faced the western world and acquired cosmopolitan ways, had better advantages, more chances to higher education, having their own university in Prague. They, too, like the Slovaks, struggled to hold onto their costumes, language and traditions. The Slovaks being closer to nature, and more isolated because of their high mountains kept their identity, resisting Magyarization. The "Sedlaks" (peasants) were a more westernized, proud dignified people. The native costumes differed according to the various villages in Slovakia and cities of Prague, Brno, and Bratislava. They wore colorful, beautifully handmade, puffy sleeves with lace, white aprons over wide embroidered skirts. A colored kerchief was worn as a headdress. The men wore tight-fitting trousers and embroidered blouses in rich colors, and boots. The National Gallery of Prague contains a collection of Josef Manes's paintings of Moravian and Slovakian Sedlaks in their native costumes.

The Czech and Slovak people have always liked to sing. They sang when they were happy and they sang during their most trying times. Children were taught to sing at school, farmers sang while they were at work in the fields, women sang while they were preparing to bake kolaZe and bread. Young people walking four-abreast along a country road would sing. In former days, many happy hours were spent sitting around a table, singing while stripping feathers to be made into feather beds and pillows.

There were happy songs with promise, "Pfijde Jaro Pfijde, Bude Zase MAL" (Spring is Coming, Coming, It will Again Be May). Nothing will ever compare with these dear Czech songs and their rich melodies. There was the sad song about the "Sirotek" (Orphan) born in Prague, who doesn't know his father, has no mother, is forsaken. Sokol songs, songs about green meadows, love, Christmas, and one's homeland.

According to legends, the music of "Kde Domov Mie was credited to Franti gek Jan §kroup. He was born February 3, 1801, in Pardubice and died in Rotterdam, Holland in 1862. He composed the first Czech opera, "Dratenik," the works written by J. K. Chmelenskeho. Franti gek kroup was bandmaster with Stavovskern Theatre during the years of 1828-1857. He arranged the music of operas, dances, orchestral pieces and church hymns. From the play, "Fidlovaaa" (No Wrath, No Brawling) came the music which Frantigek kroup's b-and played, and the music became the Czechoslovak National Hymn.

There is not a nation in the world that has a more heart-stirring history. It is one that tells of its glory under the Bohemian Kings. In the year of 1346, King Charles IV of Bohemia was crowned King of Germany and Holy Roman Emperor (1347). Under his reign Bohemia prospered. He bought lands and estates from the German nobles, and the Kingdom of Bohemia grew in size, stretching to the Rhineland, and included Luxembourg, the Brandenburg estates, and Silesia.

The reign of Bohemia kings ended and for three centuries the Czechs struggled to survive under Hapsburg domination. The end of the First World War brought freedom to the Czechs and Slovaks, only to be lost once again to the Soviets.

Josef Kajetan Tyl was born February 4, 1808 in Kutna Hora, and died July 1I, 1856. He studied philosophy in Prague, but lost interest in continuing his studies and turned to acting. He was a writer, dramatist, newspaper correspondent and edited periodicals. Tyl's most popular play, "Fidlova6ka" had its premier on December 21, 1834. The words, "Kde Domov were written by Josef Kaietan Tyl. He and his collaborator, Franti gek Jan Skroup, created the Czech National Anthem.

"Dobre rano" is used more in the country, while "dobre jitro" is more common in the cities. "Dobre jitro" is becoming more and more common.

Since "jitro" is a poetic word and not otherwise commonly used, you may run across an abbreviation "dobrktro", which is strictly colloquial.

"Sbohem" has a religious origin.

Literal translation is "with God" and traces apparently to the phrase "Jdi (or Jdete) s Bohem". "Jdi" is singular, while "Jdete" is plural imperative (meaning "Go with God"). 1. The verb to be in the indicative of the present tense:

The personal pronouns ja, ty, etc. are usually not used with the verbs (E. g. Bydlime v Praze. Studuju na univerzite.), unless they express stress or contrast (E. g. Ja pi§u a ty vatiA. Ja rano nesnidam.). Ty as well as the verbal form jsi are used only when speaking to a close friend.

Respect is expressed by using the plural form vy + jste in second person singular. The same rule applies to all verbs.

Recent Migrants Can Aid State's Continued Growth

By Robert L. Haney TAES Science Writer Since 1970, Texas has had nearly 2.25 million people move here from other parts of the nation, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates.

That's more people than the 13 colonies had at the time of the Revolution.

What are these new Texans like?

How do they feel about their new home and do they feel they have benefitted by moving here?

These and similar questions were part of a recent state-wide survey conducted by the Department of Rural Sociology in the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station at Texas A&M University.

"The results of the survey indicate that persons who have migrated to the State in the past 7 years are likely to make major contributions to the State's continued growth," according to Dr. Steve H. Murdock, head of the Department of Rural Sociology.

"Over 89 percent of these migrants were in the most productive ages of 19 to 54, nearly 40 percent were managers, or in other technical occupations, over 20 percent had come to the state to work in the energy or manufacturing industries, over 32 percent were college graduates and nearly 25 percent had incomes over $40,000 per year."

These migrants not only had very positive characteristics but they also are generally happy with their new homes. They rated local governments, schools, health services, job opportunities, housing and recreation more positively than did long-term residents of the state, according to Murdock.

In addition, over 64 percent rated their new communities as above average in terms of overall amenities.

Finally, over 57 percent of the migrants, (compared to 36 percent of long-term residents), felt that they were financially better off in 1983 than in 1982.

Overall, then, the results of the survey indicate that recent migrants to the State have characteristics that will contribute positively to the State's future development and have found the State to be a desirable place to live and work. It appears that most migrants have found that their positive expectations about Texas have been fulfilled, Murdock concluded.
