TEMPLE — The Czech program at Temple Junior college has received a $1,000 donation from the SPJST Supreme Lodge to be used for scholarships and enrichment of the program. Dr. Walter H. Paul, Jr., vice president for instructional services, and Calvin Chervenka, coordinator of the Czech program, accepted the contribution from Henry Vitek of Granger, SPJST District II director, in a brief ceremony;held in conjunc tion with the quarterly state SPJST directors' meeting. SPJST has been making contributions to TJC as well as to other high schools, colleges and univer sities with Czech programs for more than 50 years. TJC has offered Czech on a regular basis since 1966. The TJC Czech program includes a study of the language as well as Czech cultural heritage. TJC was the first
junior college in the state to offer Czech as a foreign language and now offers both credit and non-credit classes, Chervenka said. In accepting the contribution, Dr. Paul expressed appreciation to the SPJST for their continued support of the Czech program. "We recognize a long association between the SPJST and TJC and are very appreciative of your past efforts and continued support of our Czech program," Dr. Paul said. "This contribution will be used to continue to encourage students to enroll in Czech language courses that also deal with their roots and cultural heritage." Chervenka, speaking both in Czech and English, also thanked the organization for their support. The money will be used for scholarships, instructional supplies, and enrichment programs, he said.
