Sunday, January 22, it was also my pleasure to meet with Lodge 187, Round Rock, at their regular monthly meeting. After my explaining the project, the SPJST's involvement in it, and touching on local needs, Sister Sharon Holman' and Sister Sandra Giarrusso volunteered as Project Coordinators for their area and will work with Sharon McDaniel on projects for Lodge 187.

We all should feel proud of the response our lodges are making to the abused and neglected children in Texas. This is another example of true fraternalism in action. Let's all work to answer the cry of "The Hurting Child in 1984".

Coming Program Wednesday, February 22 — at Lodge 172 in Pasadena at 7:30 p.m.

President Albert Risinger will be in charge of local arrangements.

My thoughts are turning more and more toward our SPJST Convention; I am looking forward to going to Corpus Christi.

I believe that .our fraternal order has grown under the leadership of a fine group of officers, and it is my hope that we keep these dedicated leaders.

President Nick A. Morris gives the SPJST dignity wherever he goes. He is a dynamic speaker, speaking both Czech and German fluently. His past experience in teaching and government fields have contributed to his capable leadership, which the SPJST needs!

Vice President Bernard M. Gebala is super as head of the insurance department. Being a sales representative, I know how much he has accomplished for our organization and for us representatives. The changes he has made have helped, not only us, but the SPJST to grow. I think he also is irreplaceable!

February 19th Meeting For Lodge 13, Dime Box Dear Vestnik Readers: Our last monthly meeting was held Sunday, January 15, 1984. President Claude Flippin called the meeting to order at approximately 2:15 p.m.

There was a total of eighteen members present at this month's meeting.

Due to the absence of Flag Bearer Penny Spitzenberger, President Claude Flippin led everyone in the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag.

Sister Dorothy Rackel, Sister Magdelene Iselt and Sister Doris Balcar gave the monthly reports which were all accepted as read. Along, witli Sister Rackel's report, we were notified that a member will be receiving her 50-year membership pin. She will be notified in October of this year.

President Claude Flippin gave the bar report which was accepted as read. In his report, he gave the 1983 year's standings since the year of 1981. After much discussion on the bar report, everyone was updated on the bar situation.

Under old business, the job of the assistant youth leader was discussed.

Mrs. Nellene Spacek is currently our youth leader. The discussion was about why do we need two assistants because of the size of our youth club.

A decision was made that we only have one assistant to help out Mrs. Spacek. Marie Spitzenberger had been the original assistant youth leader, so the lodge appointed her to be the assistant and put it in the minutes so that there wouldn't be any misunderstanding by anyone.

For new business, we welcome new member Mark Beihie. Welcome to our lodge, Mark!

The heat in the lounge had been a big discussion. For the last couple of months, the people who had to work in the bar had to freeze because of the heating system going out. After much discussion, the lodge decided to wait and see if the serviceman could get the part to fix the heater.

President Claude Flippin then adjourned the meeting, with free drinks from the bar.

Youth leader Linda Trojacek reported that the Youth Club plans a Valentine's Party at 7:30 p.m. Monday, February 13, 1984.

Adolf Motal and Michael Ahlstrom are our delegates from Lodge 32 for the SPJST State Convention to be held June 17-20, 1984 in Corpus Christi. Velaria Motal and Ruby Rokyta are the alternates.

The annual Czech Fest will be held Sunday, July 1, 1984, at the Victoria Community Center. The Rudy Kurtz Band was voted on to play for the festival. The festival will be for the afternoon and evening hours.

Ella Arnold appointed an Audit Committee to audit the finances of the lodge. They are Vlasta Svoboda, Lois Ellis, and Sandy Koutny. The committee is to meet along with Katherine Wokaty and Evelyn Horelka.

A report of the trustee's meeting was given by Evelyn Horelka. The land purchase is being finalized and is expected to be signed by midJanuary.

Lodge 28, East Bernard To Host District VI Meeting Dear Members: Lodge Karel Jonas will hold its February 5th meeting in the lodge hall at 2 p.m.

The agenda will include, other than the regular items, items of importance to the lodge. District VI spring meeting will be one of these items.

Also, the Audit Committee may have their report ready.

A social gathering will take place after the meeting.

Sunday, January 8th the lodge meeting was held. All reports were accepted as given. The committees were appointed and several motions were made and passed; the motions related to lodge operations mainly.

Many of the regulars were absent due to weather-related and other ills.

Among these were Sisters Kortis, Sperlik and Sabrsula. Sister Sperlik is recouping in a Therapeutic Hospital out of the country. Sister Sabrsula's condition is unknown at this writing. Sister Kortis was hit by one or more of the cold weather ills and should be up and around soon.

The door prize was won by Sister Nezval who, in turn, donated it to the Kitchen Fund.

The "Kaffee Klatsch" went well with more than enough food for everyone present. Sisters Haverda, Janik, Foytik, Luquette and Nezval added to the items given by the lodge.

All who stayed, helped with the clean-up.

Again, on the District VI spring meeting: as announced in the previous letter, the meeting will be held in the American Legion Hall on State Highway No. 60 (Wharton Highway), Sunday, March 25th. It is planned to open the doors at around 12 noon. The meeting starting time will be set by the District VI president; hopefully this will be

around 1 p.m. and not later than 1:15 p.m.

Lodge 32 Victoria Meeting SPJST

Lodge 32 of SPJST met January 4, 1984, at Citizens National Bank for the regular monthly meeting.

Thelma Hrncir, SPJST State Project Director and District VII Director, presented a slide presentation on Child Abuse. Assisting Mrs. Hrncir with the program was Suzanne De Wolfe from the Department of Human Resources, Amelia Funari from Children Services of Victoria, and Dick Wearden, supervisor of Protective Services here in Victoria.

Children are the future of this country and are the responsibility of everyone of the community, also, love and understanding is needed by everyone but even more so by an abused child. The lodge truly enjoyed this very informative presentation.

Matt Vanek, District VI director, installed this year's slate of officers and trustees. Officers are Ella Arnold — president, Franklin Ellis — vicepresident, Frank Huvar — Secretary, Katherine Wokaty — financial secretary, Evelyn Horelka — treasurer, Sandy Koutny — reporter, Frances Motal and Stephanie Spears — youth leaders.

40, El Campo-Hillje Meeting Report Lodge

Dear Vestnik Readers: The month meeting of the El Campo-Hillje Lodge 40 was held Wednesday, January 18, 1984.

Our meeting began with the Pledge of Allegiance and was followed by a minute of silent prayer for our dear departed members.

President James Kulcak did not receive a communication from the mother lodge, this month, but Brother Bill Goerig did receive a notification that four of our members will be receiving 50-year pins in 1984.

They are Brother George J. Appling, Sister Agnes Hubenak, Sister Marie Jecmenek and Brother Josef Ed Patik. We are so very proud and will be honoring each of them in the future.

Treasurer Leona Macha reported on all accounts and the moneymarket account. After she paid for stamps and office supplies, door prizes and turkeys, telephone, electric and trash services, catering for the Christmas Party, the band, bar supplies and services, hall management and cleaning, new tables, Bingo supplies, repairs to hall and air-conditioning, plus officers' salaries, we are still in great shape.

Now taxes are due to be paid. All in all, our last year was very productive.

Financial Secretary Bill Goerig reported on accounts and reimbursements paid to us from Temple. His report sounded very impressive.

This month's new applicants for membership were Eledia A. Delgoado and Rogelis B. Delgoado.

We welcome these new members.

First Vice President Benny Reck had no report for us at this meeting.

Things are going fine!

Sister Margie Kulcak gave a report on the kitchen since the lodge has taken over running it. She said they have shown a profit each week.

President Kulcak thanked Brother Dutch Kopecky and Sister Dora Lee Kopecky for coming in early on Bingo night and helping set up in the kitchen.

During the November meeting an

addition to the building was discussed. The original maximum to be spent has been voted on and amended and increased to a limit maximum of $50,000. New bids will now be taken on the enlargement.

There was alsoa review of rental fees for hall use so members would be familiar with the policies for the coming year.

President Kulcak says Bingo forms have changed again, so he has asked Treasurer Leona Macha to take over some of the paperwork.

Also security for Bingo nights was discussed and will be continued, rather than put in camera security.

Sister Rita Vanek received information on ads in the souvenir booklet to be printed for the SPJST Convention this year.

The motion was made and carried to purchase a half-page ad. Sister Vanek has consented to compose the ad.

Treasurer Macha asked about officers' salaries for 1984. The issue was voted on and salaries will remain the same.

A hard copy of the lodge history is to be purchased and donated to the Wharton County Library for reference.

All officers were present for the meeting and business moved along briskly.

Cash door prize was won by Sister Laverne Bacak.

Refreshments were served following the meeting.

Meeting For Lodge 58, Hungerford

Annual

The Hungerford SPJST Lodge 58 will hold its next meeting February 14, 1984 at 7 p.m. at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Konvicka in Hungerford.

We will hold the election of officers at this meeting since we didn't get to have the election at the December meeting. We didn't have enough members at that meeting. So, everyone please mark this date on your calendar and come to this meeting to help elect your officers for the coming year.

8th Meeting For Lodge 79, Corpus Christi February

Lodge 79, Corpus Christi held their regular monthly meeting Wednesday, January 11, 1984.

All officers, with the exception of our financial secretary, were present along with seventeen members and two guests.

Under old business it was voted on to purchase the book on Czech immigrants for our library.

Set For Initiation Of New Members For Lodge 84, Dallas Date

Dear Members: At our January 16 meeting, President Ondrusek welcomed all members present, which included our youth members, who came in to recite the pledge to our flag along with us before departing for their own meeting. For once the Conference Room was full and it was great!

Right now, make your plans to attend the next monthly meeting at 3 p.m. February 19th; it's our meeting set to welcome all new members who joined our lodge in the past year and also are guests for dinner following.

Also, you will be introduced to the newly-elected officers who were installed by District III Director Sid Pokladnik during the January 16th meeting. Brother Sid had a "catch" in his neck which was very uncomfortable but was able to install and congratulate them for being chosen to represent SPJST Lodge 84. Our members thank you, Brother Sid Pokladnik!

Helen Bayer is reported back in the hospital. We hope she is home by now.

Minutes were read and corrected, and the treasurer's report was given.

Patricia Nell Svoboda was accepted as a new member.

Bill Norman and Lydia Talamanley, Child Protective service officers, were present at the meeting.

They spoke of the needs of organizations to get involved to help these unfortunate children. Maxine Pavliska, Barbara Burleson, Polly Bayer and Liz Bielefeld were appointed as a committee to organize events for the children. A clothes closet is also needed. Children's clothes, any size are needed because the children vary in size, from infants to 16-yearold ones. These clothes are to be taken to the Department of Human Resources Building on Highway 181.

Bud from Correspondence Lackness was acknowledged.

Youth Leader Polly Bayer reported the clubbers voted to have a Valentine Skating Party; cookies and punch will be served during the party. She also gave a financial report.

Financial Secretary Liz Bielefeld presented the 8%Š refund from the Supreme Lodge.

Repairs on the hall are to be discussed by the newly-appointed Building Committee; these members are Billy Pavliska, Bob Bayer, Henry Sralla and Tony Svoboda.

President Bayer reported he had presented a check for $500 to the Fire Department to help purchase a new fire truck.

Nursing home gifts donated to the Floresville Nursing Home amounted to $160.58. All the residents were thrilled to receive gifts of lotion, powder, shower caps, dominoes, combs, hose, socks and other personal needs.

Lodge 107 is to be commended for taking such an active part in local activities.

Door prize was won by Billy Pavliska. Refreshments were enjoyed by all present.

Houston Dear Members: President Mary Ann Kieschnick called our meeting to order at 2 p.m.

Sunday, January 8, 1984.

We had 38 members present and everyone stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

We had roll call of officers and all officers' reports were given.

Our new bar manager is Brother Howard Kieschnick.

Sister Rosie Tumis, our kitchen manager, will surprise us at our Sunday lodge meetings with a delicious meal each time. We wish to recognize Sister Rosie Tumis and praise her for the fantastic job she has done over the past 10 years as our very lovable Stanfanik Lodge 142, Houston Officers serving for 1984, L to R: Treasurer Sidon and capable bar manager.

James and Carolyn Moreno of Longview announced the arrival of a baby boy, Todd David, who was born Thursday, December 29, 1983 at 4:43 p.m. at the Good Shepherd Hospital.

He weighed 8 pounds, 11 ounces and measured 21 inches. He was welcomed home by two brothers, Adam and Keith, and one sister, Theresa. Grandparents for the 6th time are Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Veselka of Houston and for the 9th time Mr. and Mrs. John Moreno of Eagle Lake Great-grandmother is Mrs. Mary Korenek of Eagle Lake.

Ladies' Circle Lodge 92, Fort Worth Dear Members and Friends: Here's wishing all of you a "Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year"!

Our January meeting opened with Mary Powers, president, presiding.

Secretary Frances Grizzard read the minutes, and Hermina Cihacek gave the financial report.

Two cards from Anne Polk were read, one was "A Novena", for our Ladies' Circle and another one was a Christmas card which was received after our last meeting. (It's really nice to hear from you, Anne. Keep up the correspondence.) A 'Thank You' card from the Taylor S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home acknowledging the $25 sent to them from our Circle, a card from Sunshine Easley, and one from the John Murphy family for the money sent to Lodge 92 in his memory, were also read.

The door prize given by Inez Krivanek was won by Mary Cihacek.

The following new members were welcomed by our Circle: Kristi Gilcrease, Helton Whitaker, Sadi Gorsuch and James Greer. We hope they will enjoy working with us. Our visitor from Euless was Imogene Reaves. We were glad to see Marie Prill who has been in Germany for several weeks. Fortunately, she did not have to be operated on.

Those of you who missed our Christmas Party really should have been there. Florence Greer read a poem called "Mixed-Up" which could have happened to anyone. Esta Belle Hubenak read a poem on "The Joy of Aging". Mary Powers then recognized some of the ones who helped to make her year a success by presenting Christmas Decoration to Esta Belle Hubenak, Maggie Konecny, Elizabeth Gregory, Frances Grizzard, Lillie McMillen, Joyce Tesar, Hermina Cihacek and Flora Koci.

Dona Hubenak and Betty Billingston were absent so they were presented theirs at our January meeting. She also presented all members a set of

butterflies. Then Joe Gregory read the story of "The Wright Family," which was suggested by Florence Greer. A circle was made by the members and during the story gifts were passed either to the right or left as read by Joe, when story ends you get the gift in your hand at that time.

Oh, yes, we also had a wonderful dinner and our hostesses did a wonderful job.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Julia Duesar, Anna Langer, Bennie Hundle, Mary Powers and Joe Gregory. We hope they will have many more.

Esta Belle Hubenak was in North Hill Medical Center Hospital for a short period but was able to attend our meeting. Also, Dona Hubenak entered the Plaza Medical Hospital for an eye implant. We were happy that she could also be at our meeting.

Lillie McMillen read a "Thank You" card from Esta Belle Hubenak.

No other illness was reported at this time.

Florence Greer made a report on making reservations to go to the Mary Kay's Manufacturing Company in March.

Florence Greer will also donate the door prize for our next meeting.

We were sorry to learn of the death of Steve Matusevich who was a dedicated member and worker in the SPJST Lodge No. 92. He and other "ole" timers helped to make our local lodge what it is today. May he rest in eternal peace. We extend our sympathy to his family.

Hostesses for our next meeting are Evelyn Spacek, Bennie Hundle, Minnie Ruzicka and Bennie Bartek.

Head of the Youth Department STATEWIDE YOUTH LEADERS' RETREAT Our Statewide Youth Leaders' Retreat for 1984 is set for Saturday, March 24th, and Sunday, March 25th. We will probably start around 9 a.m. Saturday morning and the retreat will be over after the noon meal Sunday.

The site of this year's retreat is Camp Lone Star near La Grange.

The facilities are very nice and we think that you will be pleased with the surroundings, which should be very conducive to the learning process. All DYC's, Assistant DYC's, Youth Leaders and Assistants, plus anyone else directly involved in our youth program is welcome to attend; however, this occasion is not to be considered a weekend vacation, but as a period of learning and relating. What you will learn should then be applied in your activities and work with the youth.

Spouses directly involved with the youth are welcome. The accommodations are limited so other than the seven DYC's, the selections will have to be based on a need-to-know and eventual-use basis, as well as a first-come-first-served basis, with a deadline of March 5, 1984. Those attending other than as outlined above or as guests will be assessed a charge of $45.90 per person, provided are accomodations available.

Camp Lone Star is located southeast of La Grange. You will need to follow the sign that is alongside the highway just after you cross the iron bridge across the Colorado River going south out of La Grange on Hwy 77 and before you ascend the bluff.

There will be no meal available Friday, so if you intend to arrive Friday evening, you need to either eat beforehand or bring a light snack. Kitchen facilities will not be open Friday night. The first meal served will be breakfast Saturday morning. If you don't arrive in time for breakfast at either 7:30 or 8 a.m., your first meal will be the noon lunch Saturday.

The Supreme Lodge will pay round trip mileage for (1) car from a lodge, plus camp costs, which include all meals and lodging.

However, no mileage reimbursement will be paid for those who do not arrive in time for the start of Saturday's activities or to those who leave before noon Suday. We plan to start the day's activities at 9 a.m.

From the District Youth Counselors Important Information For District II The Valentine Skating Party is scheduled for Sunday, February 19, 1984 from 5 p.m. to 7:15 p.m., at Skate Haven in Temple near Temple . High School.

Door prizes will be given and you may bring a friend. Please ask the friend you bring to join your youth club or join the SPJST and enjoy the summer activities with us.

We are setting dates and making plans for the summer activities, all SPJST youth members of District II are invited; come out and meet your friends.

The District II spring meeting will soon be here. It is scheduled for Sunday, March 25th at Lodge 80 in Holland. The full details are not yet complete, but we plan to have a youth program so I would like to ask the youth leaders to get some volunteers from their youth club who would be willing to show their talents and be able to earn extra points, and be eligible for prizes to be awarded.

The Statewide Leaders' and Assistants' Training Class is scheduled that same weekend so District II leaders may have to leave a little early that Sunday. This training class will be at Camp Lone Star at La Grange and will begin Saturday morning, March 24 but you may arrive Friday night, March 23rd, however, no meal is scheduled that night but sleeping facilities will be available. I am asking each of my leaders/assistants (and this includes your spouses) to plan to attend this weekend training class. At the same time you will be able to view the camp facilities available at Camp Lone Star. You must fill out an application blank from the Vestnik and return it to Brother Nick Morris as specified.

Please make plans to be there.

Full details of all summer activities and dates will be sent to each leader soon, so you can make your plans and set all dates aside.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the members of Lodge No. 68, Nelsonville, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother AUGUST L. ZETTEL, who passed away November 18, 1983, in the Wilford Hall Hospital in San Antonio, following a lengthy illness.

He was retired from the U.S.A.F. He was employed for the last five years as plant manager for Trailer Wheel and Frame in Bellville.

He was a member of the Nelsonville SPJST. Funeral services were held from Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio on November 22, 1983 with full military honors. Interment followed.

Survivors include his wife, Lina B. Zettel of Brenham; daughter, Marita Thompson of Garden Grove, California; sisters, Annie Schmoburg of Bellville, Adella Cook of Navasota; brothers, Ladislav and Alvin of New Ulm and Willie B. Zettel of Freeport; grandchildren, Gary, Terry, Kim and Ted Thompson of California.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Franklin and Jessie Zettel.

Mr. Melcher was born in the Shelby Community July 10, 1913, the son of Herman and Dora Melcher. He was a member of the Nelsonville SPJST, the St. John Lutheran Church, and the Austin County Farm Bureau. Mr. Melcher served as deputy county clerk for Austin County until his retirement.

June 27, 1936, he was married to Miss Lillie Mikeska in ceremonies performed in Nelsonville.

Funeral services were held from the chapel of the Pete E. Etlinger Funeral Home in Bellville January 4, with Rev. William Rotter officiating.

Burial was in the Oak Knoll Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Stanley Wheeless, Charles Sebesta, Alfred Golan, Wayne Alexander, D. W. Meinen, and Thomas Davis.

Survivors include: wife, Mrs. Lillie Melcher of Bellville; daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Jimmy Davis of kingwood; sister, Mrs. M. W. Kurtz of Rosenberg and 2 nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

MARTINETS, who passed away January 7, 1984 at the age of 82 in a Temple hospital.

She was born in Copperas Cove, but had lived in Holland most of her life.

Burial was in the Holland City Cemetery.

Services were held Tuesday, January 17 at 11 a.m. at Mount Olivet Chapel with Monsignor William Botik of Christ The King Church in Dallas, officiating. Interment was in Mount Olivet Cemetery and arrangements were by Mount Olivet Funeral Home.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Spanhel

Temple Couple Honored on 50th Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Frank Spanhel celebrated their 50th anniversary at Lodge 47, Seaton Saturday, November 26, 1983.

The reception began at 3 p.m. and was hosted by their children and their spouses: Frank V. Spanhel, Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Spanhel, Mr. and Mrs. Elton (Patricia) Ramthum and Mr. and Mrs. Dean (Betty) Sitz; also all their nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild attended and helped with the celebration.

Many friends and relatives attended and were treated to a delicious catered barbecue meal with all the trimmings. The wedding cake was a 3-tiered white cake with gold trim. A dance followed at night with music furnished by Wence Shimek.

Mr. and Mrs. Spanhel were married November 29, 1934 at Granger, Texas and farmed in the Meeks' Community for 7 years. They then moved to the Little RiverAcademy Community where they farmed until 1957. He then went into the welding (blacksmith) business.

He is still in the welding business.

Mrs. Spanhel, of course, worked by

his side, raising her family and raises beautiful flowers and always has a vegetable garden going.

Frank and Eleanora, as they are known by all their friends, have been active members of SPJST for many years. Frank is a past president of Lodge 47 and has served on several committees in the past. They were both very active in Sokol when it was active at Seaton.

Frank and Eleanora are fortunate that they have all four of their children living close by in the Academy Community and Eleanora always has grandchildren dropping by after school for grandmother's "snacks". This fine young couple makes dances every Saturday night either at Star Hall or wherever their "tapping toes" want to go plus Sunday dances and a few in between! The saying:"Parents, do you know whre your children are tonight" could very well be reversed for Frank and Eleanora to say, "Children, do you know where your parents are tonight" for this energetic couple is hard to keep up with!

We congratulate this fine young couple and wish them many more years of happiness.

Tepera

James Tepera has been assigned to the Uvalde Soil Conservation Service Field Office, where he will be working as a range conservationist.

Tepera was born and raised in Corpus Christi and is a graduate of Texas A&M University. He received his bachelor of science degree in range science in 1982 and is in the final phase of finishing a master of agriculture degree. He was a distinguished student in agriculture in 1981 and 1982 while attending A &M. Tepera has previously worked for the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station, both in Vernon and College Station as a student technician and for the USDA Forest Service as a range technician.

Tepera says that he is excited about working in Uvalde County because of the diversity of the agricultural practices. "I can't think of a better place to be in order to receive the type of training and experience that I want," he said. While Tepera's main interest is in range management, he is looking forward

to learning all about irrigated cropland and watershed management.

ONCE UPON A WEDDING

Today's songs often speak of love. But in bygone days it was common for young people to choose partners according to the choice of their parents, or for economic reasons. And love? That could come later, if the man was good and the woman was neat and hard-working. And then there were the pious wishes and the acts of magic that were meant to assure newly-weds of happiness, prosperity and contentment.

The wedding lasted almost the whole week, though the days for the most important ceremonies were mostly Tuesday and Wednesday, sometimes Thursday and Friday.

After the final reading of the banns a bride-party was prepared, and the evening before the wedding would be spent by her and the bridesmaids lamenting for their freedom. Songs were sung, and below the window a band would play. Dressing the bride was the duty of the bridesmaids, and it was the task of the matron of honor to ensure the observance of all the supersti tious practises that were meant to guarantee the bride happiness and contentment.

After being dressed, the bride knelt down on a towel and the bridesman thanked her parents in her name for all their care and love. The bridegroom offered his thanks to his parents in the same way and then set

Census Survey Here Seeks Data On Displaced Workers And Occupational Training The U.S. Bureau of the Census will conduct a regular survey on employment and unemployment in this area during the week of January 16-21, 1984, according to John E. Reeder, Jr., Director of the Bureau's Regional Office in Dallas.

In addition to the usual questions on current employment, the January survey will include others concerning displaced workers and occupational training. Displaced workers questions will be asked of persons 20 years of age and older, who have lost or left a job involuntarily in the past five years, in an effort to determine which industries and occupations have been affected the most, and what earnings or benefits losses may have been incurred. The occupational training questions will be asked of persons 14 years of age and older who have attended any occupational training program in the past two years.

Households in this area are part of the sample of 72,000 across the country scientifically selected to represent a cross section of all U.S. households.

The monthly survey is conducted for the U.S. Department of Labor and provides a continuous record of activity in the labor force. The November survey indicated that of the 112.0 million men and women in

the civilian labor force, 102.7 million were employed. The nation's unemployment rate was 8.4 percent, down from the 8.8 percent reported in October.

Information supplied by individuals participating in the survey is kept strictly confidential by law and the results are used only to compile statistical totals.

Weather Fitness Is Important

Cold

Cold, rainy weather can tempt even the most devoted exercisers to skip their daily walk around the block. "When you skip one day, especially if you've been on an exercise program for only a short time it just makes it that much easier to quit altogether," says Dr. Mary Ann Huessner, a health education specialist with the Texas A&M University Agricultural Extension Service.

People with some types of health problems such as angina or other heart conditions should stay out of the cold. But most people who exercise outdoors will find it a benefit, she says. Cold weather is the safest in which to exercise, as long as you dress properly, because it keeps the body from overheating. For cold weather exercise wear loose clothing in layers and a cap of some sort since as much as 30 percent of body heat is lost from the head, advises the specialist.

Outlet Stores

Most outlet clothing stores carry several kinds of merchandise. "Samples" have typically been used by sales representatives or for displays.

Outlet stores feature reduced prices, but shoppers will get real bargains only if they know what they are buying, says Dr. Ann Vanderpoorten, a clothing specialist with the Texas A&M Agricultural Extension Service home economics program.

Some outlets sell clothing from many manufacturers, and others sell from only one. The reduced prices are possible due to low overhead and the type of merchandise carried by the stores. An item sold at a low price in an outlet store is not necessarily a bargain. Check the quality of the garment against its price just as you would when shopping at regular stores, she says. Also make sure you can use and will actually wear the garment, since most outlet stores do not allow refunds.

"Electric cords are necessary for the convenient and efficient use of electricity in our modern world," Clayton says. "But the use of damaged cords, and careless use of any cord, can produce disastrous results in homes. To reduce the hazards to yourself and those around you, remember to be safety conscious when using electrical cords, appliances and tools."

How To Avoid Electric Shock and Fires — Cord Safety In The Home Most of us take electricity for granted. Our homes are filled with electrical appliances and tools which keep us warm, cook our food, light our rooms, and entertain us. But every year, according to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, thousands of people receive hospital emergency room treatment for injuries associated with electrical fires or shocks. Hundreds die in these accidents.

Electrical fires and shocks can be caused by overloaded or broken cords, or poor connections. If too many appliances are plugged into an extension cord or circuit, the electrical load may exceed its rating and the wires may overheat, baking and cracking or melting the rubber or plastic jacket on the cord. The result may be a "short circuit." This occurs when one wire of the cord touches another. The ensuing extremely hot spark can cause a fire. If people touch the exposed wires, they could be severely burned or even electrocuted.

Yet many electrical fires or shocks could be easily prevented by taking a few simple precautions when handling electrical cords, tools and appliances. H. Kennedy Clayton, Engineering Manager at the Cord Products Division of Belden Corporation, offers some suggestions about cord safety....

"The misuse of extension cords —

CONCLUSION? No one is immune to colds. Everyone gets them, and everyone hates them. According to the findings of this article, there isn't a lot you can do to keep from catching one, and there isn't much you or the doctor can do once you've got one. Just endure, and make sure it doesn't develop into something else. Perhaps colds were created to keep us all humble. Who knows?
