'Editor' COMMENTS

Success . . . Success isn't one big victory that comes all at once. It is daily and weekly achievements, a series of small victories — none of which, in itself, makes us what we want to be. However, adding them up, they accumulate to the result we want.

Any journey starts with the first step — and by step after step, we arrive. Life by the yard is hard. By the inch, it is a cinch. Each of us is as big as we determine we want to be — but as big as we determine we will be.

Isn't it always true that cooperation brings success? We would like to bring to your attention the fact that the sales representatives throughout the.

SPJST have made another successful achievement in our Society's records regarding it as 365 days laden with opportunity and challenge when they yielded certain/amounts of advance in business.

While reminiscing about our forefathers, we realize that almost none of them attended a college or university to be qualified to sell insurance. Yet, in spite of this, shall we say, disadvantage, they left us an inheritance and after many, many years, we today gratefully can reveal the fact that many of our sales representatives are qualified to sell insurance to their prospects.

Perhaps some of our readers wonder how does the SPJST achieve such goals. Well, for one thing, our Insurance Department keeps abreast of the up-to-date insurance industry, recruits and trains members who are interested in selling life insurance to the ones to suit their needs, and helps the local lodges increase their membership.

Numerous of the sales persons traveling a lot are making personal contacts, especially where there are good potentials.

Our hats off to the productive sales representatives and may 1984 bring even better goals in your field work. GOOD LUCK .

Joy in work — the idea of joy in one's work has long been ridiculed, but nevertheless it is fast taking root in the minds of many and proving its value and merit.

Whether you work in an office or in a factory, you can talk cheerfulness, willingness, and eagerness with you.

The day's burdens are lightened, fatigue is kept away and depression is not given a chance to envelop you.

Such an attitude not only makes you good company for yourself, but for others as well. It soot becomes contagious and your associates adopt the idea. It is then that ideal working conditions are brought about.

Dissatisfaction is responsible for most aversion to work. When we drown this dissatisfaction in a determination to make our work pleasant by bringing it into an atmosphere of joy and happiness, then, and only then, can we express to live life as it should be lived. ***

Wouldn't it be nice if we could find other things as easy as we find fault.

Not long ago, a man took stock of himself. For years he had awakened in the morning feeling none too good. He was quite likely to be displeased that it was time to rise.

He would frown because the children were noisy and full of life, He never had much to say to his spouse until he had eaten his breakfast in silence.

Then he began to notice that his days were colored by that first hour.

If that was the case — and he believed that it was — the logical thing was to change the character of the first hour of the day. He thought he would try out that plan.

He made out a definite program.

When he first awakened, he would enumerate all the good things that had occurred the day before. Then he would think of the care of the night, and the opportunities of the day which awaited him. He would think of himself as eager to do a good turn for someone. He would start right then to determine to be good-natured the first hour of the day. He would try to make it pleasant for someone. It might be to write a note, just a cheerful line for two, to some lonesome soul.

Well, the morning of the first day of the new program he went downstairs and remarked cheerfully, "My, but that coffee smells good! There's all the *** difference in the world in coffee, Salesmanship is one of the most and, Jane, you've certainly got the fascinating and rewarding knack of making it."

To the man's surprise, the days occupations there is — IF it is became more interesting, his approached as a profession instead associates became more considerate of a job.

There may be many arguments in and friendly, and his business grew favor of almost any product or surprisingly, even in the face of service, but usually there is at least difficulties. In transportation, followed in the same spirit. for example, speedy is the dominant appeal for the airlines. Comfort is played up by the railroads and economy by the bus companies.

When selecting a dominant appeal, take the feature which is special and cannot be duplicated by a competitor. Playing up the dominant features will also make it difficult for competition to undermine you. ***

While a good number of individuals have indicated interest in purchasing the book, the number of lodges is woefully low — 40 to be exact. That's not a very good percentage out of some 128. A couple of issues back we published pictures of what the front cover and the first few pages of the book will look like. That's as close as we can get to the real thing at this time.

Lodge 47, Seaton "Brother & Sister" Award

Lodge President Jerry Pechal had the privilege of presenting the annual "Brother and Sister" award to Brother Dan and Sister Ann Balusek at the Lodge Christmas Party. The couple was elected for the honor by the Board of Trustees.

Among his numerous former duties were past lodge president, chairman of the Board of Trustees, a delegate to several conventions, a board member for several years, a committee member on several committees as well as the chairperson of some of these in past years, a bar chairperson for a month

when the trustees ran the bar, and chairman of the kitchen for a month every year (with the assistance always of Sister Ann). They also attend the regular lodge meetings each month.

Congratulations and thanks Brother Dan and Sister Ann, for the willingness in helping with lodge activities.

I thought you might like to know how each officer and board member has served you in the past: President James Wilcox — has served 2 years as trustee, 1 year vice president, 3 1/2 years president, 1 year bar chairman, 3 112 years bar co-chairman, 1 year convention delegate, and chairman of numerous committees.

Vice President Andy Fowler — has served 4 years as trustee and 2 years vice president.

Secretary Creola Wilcox — has served 6 1/2 years as recording secretary, 1 year trustee, 1 year historian, 1 year convention delegate, 2 years reporter, 6 years entertainment chair-person and has served on numerous committees.

Lodge 81, Needville Annual Chili Supper Dear Members: Our first meeting of this year was held January 8, beginning with a noon meal at 12:15 p.m. which consisted of delicious fried chicken and all the trimmings brought by the members.

At 2 p.m., President Charlie Matcek called the meeting to order.

Sister Mary Matcek led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag and we remained standing for a few moments in silence as a tribute to our two deceased members, Sister Frances Sitta and Brother Arnold Reichler. May they rest in peace.

All officers answered the roll call.

Minutes of the previous-meeting were read by Secretary Mary Werner and also a card of thanks from the Vlasta Rose family was read.

Financial Secretary Jo Ann Morgan gave her report. Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendall gave a financial statement report. Special Fund Treasurer Gilbert Walzel gave the schedule of activities at the hall and then gave the financial report.

Memorial Fund report was then given by Winnefred Susan. All of these reports were accepted as given.

Reported on the sick list was Sister Vlasta Holt, who is in the Medical Center, and we were all glad to hear that Brother Stanley Slacalek is at home after spending several weeks in the hospital. We hope to see you up and about and back at our meetings again.

The Auditing Committee will meet Monday, January 9 at the Nowotny home.

Brother Herbert Nowotny reported on the repair of the barbecue pit and presented the bill.

Sister Annie Horelica thanked everyone for being concerned about her husband during his stay at the hospital and for the cards, calls and visits.

We will again sponsor our annual chili supper Tuesday, February 14, serving beginning at 5 p.m.

Ladies don't forget to bring your favorite homemade pastry. We will also have plenty of homemade bread, fritos, catsup, hot coffee or tea to go with your chili. Take-home orders will also be accommodated, so keep this date in mind. You may be the lucky person to win Sister Nowotny's beautiful Valentine cake, so be there!

Sister Nowotny was asked to make a monthly report on "GetWell" cards sent to our members.

Brother Nowotny gave a favorable report on the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II. A new hot water heater at the hall has been installed. Our thanks to Brother Walzel for checking on this matter.

Sister Lydia Fahler volunteered to barbecue a brisket for our noon meal in February.

Refund checks were handed out.

Attendance prizes were won by Tillie Mikeska and Lydia Fahler. I apologize for omitting the prize winners in my last month's report; they were Fritz Rogge and Benita Walzel.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned. I'll see you at our next month's meeting February 12th!

Lodge 133, San Antonio Held Christmas Party

Dear Members and Friends: It's hard to believe that the first meeting of the year is already history while there is still a faint sound of sleigh bells in "the corners of your mind".

January 8, at 2 p.m., our meeting opened with all officers present and the first order of business was the installation of same. Joe Paprskar did the honors as he has done for several past years.

Following the ritual the regular order of business was transacted and all reports given were approved. The first report was Gordon Hubenak's for the Youth Club because the young members were anxiously waiting to go bowling, and on their return at the end of the adult meeting, we learned that a good time was had by all.

Next the assembly approved three new members, and all present were pleased to see Mary Kubala and Clara Cohn who don't get to come so often.

Recently there had been some talk of changing our meetings to a dfferent time from the traditional second Sunday, but, after discussions with many of the members during the past month, President Albert Kubala concluded that the general consensus was definitely against such a deviation and we will continue to follow our long-standing custom unless some crisis should occur.

The recent cold and icy weather caused Juanita Johnnie to fall and break her elbow. However, two other members had accidents not related to the weather; Albina Farek fell and broke her hip and Steve Matusevitch fell at home and broke hs wrist. Estabelle Hubenak did not attend Sunday's meeting; instead she entered North Hills Medical Hospital for surgery; also Dona Hubenak was reported to have been in St. Joseph Hospital to secure eye implant for cataract.

Martha Durham told of sending ten birthday cards to members over sixty years of age. Names of donors to the memorial fund for our deceased Brother John Murphy are Rudy and JoDell Wruble, Mike and Jackie Riddle, Millie and Rudolph Wruble, Millie and Mike Crow, Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Pulliam, Rudy and Justine Chaloupka and Alene and Al Kercho.

After adjournment we all enjoyed a change-of-pace meal of sandwiches and cold cuts and the usual "show off' desserts from the ladies.

We expect to see all of you at the February meeting; you will have more time that month with a whole extra day, this being leap year.

6/VESTNfK—Wednesday, January 18, 1984 Our lodge held its regular meeting December 18, 1983 at 1505 S. Gevers Street. Prior to the meeting, a Christmas dinner was served at 12:30 p.m. which the members enjoyed very much. There were 52 members and four guests present.

The Social Committee is commended for their efforts in presenting such a fine meal.

After dinner, President Matula called the regular meeting to order.

He also led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance, and held a moment of silence in memory of our dear departed members. Various reports were given, and a summary of past activities of 1983 were reported by President Matula.

It was a very good year; the attendance at the lodge meetings has increased, the interest in the many activities and the many recommendations by the members, for the betterment of our lodge indicated that we are moving forward. We are encouraged very much by this action, and we hope it continues for a still better year in 1984.

More information on our projected activities will be published at a later date. We wish all the SPJST members a very productive year and may everyone enjoy good health!

154, Ft. Worth Meeting Lodge

Dear Members and Friends: We have a beautiful day after a good rain all day, yesterday. We were told after the freeze we needed to water, so that really helped.

Our meeting Sunday was called to order by our president, Brother Jerry Milan.

The pledge to the flag was recited by all.

The minutes were read and all reports were approved as read.

Correspondence was read from Brother Jerry Mikulas of the Supreme Lodge and a nice letter of thanks from the Child Welfare Department for Child Abuse donation.

Sister Mary Renfro asked to remind you members who are running late on paying your premium to get in touch with her at 237-1500.

Five new members were accepted.

Congratulations to Sister Mary Renfro of Lodge 154 who was the Number One Sales Representative in District III for the month of December, 1983!

Brother Milan extended special thanks to Sister Carolyn Cleveland on the Christmas Program and to our extra special Santa Claus. He brought back many memories of his dear dad. He really lit up a lot of eyes to a large group of children. He distributed over a hundred gifts and then many bags of fruit and candy.

Brother Milan also thanks the sisters for all the goodies.

The youth club members are meeting at Chuck-E-Cheese this week.

Sokol Fort Worth will have their annual Awards Banquet Sunday, January 29 at Bill Martins at 251 University for $6.00 a person at 2:30 p.m. Anyone who would like to attend may contact Sister Milan at 237-4237 for reservations.

Mamula and wife, Annie, now living in Oklahoma City, where he is working on his master's degree and Annie is an ABC newscaster was the main reason for coming south. Since all the family members were together a family photo was made with 90 members present and 3 were missing. We were happy to hear they arrived home safely after a rough trip.

We were happy Sisters Maria Prill and-Eva-Dockery arrived home

of Texas Coach Darrell Royal, Jim and Rhonda Hoops from California as guests of her parents, Brother Don and Sister Margaret Laymance of Austin, and all of their family members; also had a large group from Decateur and seven guests from Lincoln, Nebraska. This was new to them and they were really impressed. A group from Lodge 92, after their celebration, came over to extend their good wishes. Everyone reported a good time. Now, to get on with another year that is already flying by.

A donation of $10.00 was made by Brother Henry and Sister Ann Banfi of Chicago, Illinois in lieu of Christmas cards.

After some obstacles such as the "big freeze" and illness, our regular meeting date was rescheduled for Sunday, January 22nd to be held at the home of Sister Lillie K. Hejl, 2314 Shoalmont Dr. at 2 p.m.

A touch of sadness greeted us for the coming year. We mourn the loss of our charter member, Frank Janecek Grohmann, who died at the age of 80 on Sunday, January 8th.

Funeral services were conducted by the Wilke-Amey-Clay Funeral Home Wednesday 10 a.m. from St. Ignatius Catholic Church, burial at Assumption Cemetery. He was born in Hodonin, Czechoslovakia.

In the earlier years Frank was an active and devoted member up to the time of his ailing wife who preceded him in death a year ago.

Greetings

Dear Members: The New Year's Eve dance is now history and there was a nice crowd at the old hall and the Rejcek Polka Band kept the crowd dancing all night. Phill Boyle cooked a good breakfast for everyone; all members and guests were well-pleased.

The cold spell that hit Texas the last of December stopped all work on the new building and it seems that everyone was busy mending broken pipes and trying to stay warm. I hope you members made it through it OK and didn't have too much damage. Keep in touch with your officers because they will keep you informed as to the progress.

The first monthly meeting of 1984 was held Sunday, January 8th. The officers for 1984 were installed by Brother B. J. Hlvaty. There was about the usual crowd attending the meeting.

All reports were read and approved.

Two members Mary Ann Wainwright and Veda Lena Karnes were voted on and approved. The lodge welcomes them and hopes that their stay with the lodge will be a long and happy one.

On the sick list is Gene Havern's mother who is in the Arlington Community Hospital. Our prayers go out to her and we hope she gets well soon. Also Harry Music, one of our active members, had an auto accident; he received a broken foot and knee cap and is lucky to be alive, but he was able to make it to the meeting Sunday on crutches. Take it easy and get well soon, Harry, because you are missed at the lodge!

January 21 — The Sons of Italy will be having a Las Vegas night at the hall and all you members and friends are invited.

February 11— We will have a country/western dance with the Lone Star Express playing; this is a very good band, so everyone mark your calendar and be there for a lot of fun and dancing.

February 18—There will be a ballroom band playing at the hall, with Pinky Purinton Big Band so all of you, who like ballroom dancing and dressing up, come out and tell your friends. This is something new that the lodge is trying, so come on out and make it a big success.

The following , is a list of donations that Lodge 183 voted on and sent to several worthy projects: S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1 —$1.000, S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 2—$1,000, Star

House —$4,412.20, Unity House — $400, Tarrant County Child Abuse Program — $600, Dallas County Foster Parents' Association — $200, and Martha Stracener —$300. That is a total of $7,912.20 in cash donations and the lodge has been donating the rent of the hall to the Star House for their bingo to help them in their good work of helping people with alcohol and drug problems.

The members did a very good job in 1983 and should pat themselves on the back. The more you help others, the more others will be trying to help you! Keep Smiling!

By Frances Olexa A beautiful, lovely wedding took place Saturday, December 10, 1983 at 12:15 p.m. to join two people in holy matrimony with vows in their own words to bind these two for a long, lasting life.

The bride was Connie Petifils, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe and Sally Fronek and the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe and Mary Barabas, Jr. The groom was Glenn Joe Gooden, son of Mrs. Erna O'Conner. The Rev. Ronald Chupik performed the nuptial ceremony on the beautiful stage at Lodge 88 in the Chandelier Ballroom.

The bride and groom both were dressed in Czech costumes. The maid of honor, Kathy Volpi, and the best man, Bud Bearce, at their side also were dressed in Czech costumes.

Connie and Joe Gooden are cutting the cake.

This lovely couple, Connie and Joe, are members of the Houston Festival Folk Dancers and all the attending guests were dressed according to their nationality. This wedding was one of the most beautiful affairs to witness; about 150 guests were present and all were dressed in colorful costumes.

After the ceremony the receiving line included the bride, Connie, and her husband, Joe Gooden; the bride's parents, Joe and Sally Fronek; the groom's mother, Erna O'Conner, and the couple's children, daughter, Brenda and son, Jefferey.

The Rev. Ronald Chupik offered blessing before the delicious buffet dinner which was catered and served by W. Wehring. The family table was lavishly decorated and

soft, taped music was played throughout the dinner After dinner all music arrangements were announced by Miss Sheila and the first dance "Setja" included only the bride and groom, the second dance was "Snow Ball" waltz, again the newlyweds started dancing and, after one round, they broke to bring in a member of their family and so on until all the family members were dancing and then the guests followed. The third lovely number, the "Mazurka", again was danced by the talented newlyweds, which was a pleasure to watch. After these three numbers, the traditional wedding cake-cutting took place and the first slice was put aside for their first wedding anniversary.

Everyone, with a glass of champagne in their hands, toasted the happy couple over and over, again.

At 2 p.m. the dance music began and number after number was announced by the music director, Miss Sheila, were performed by the jolly Folk Dancers to the delight of the guests. At 4 p.m. the bride tossed her bridal bouquet to the waiting young ladies, and the groom threw the bride's garter to the eligible young men. At 4:30 p.m. the newlyweds departed dodging rice and potpourri on their way to their decorated and painted car with noisy, clanking cans.

Not only was this wedding unique, but the second ever performed on the stage of Lodge 88 (I am proud to say mine was 62 years ago). The 31/2 hours of dancing by the members of the Houston Festival Dancers was something to see. The dance floor wa g like a garden of beautiful flowers with the guests in various national costumes; just beautiful and will be remembered for a long, long time. Congratulations for a longlasting life!

I was glad to find out that Mary Ann Wagner is allright after her fall, of course, she experienced quite a bit of pain but now she is ready to venture out again with husband, Joe and sister, Christene.

The jolly voice of William Souchek sounded real good and to find him in such a good mood, is not really surprising; he always shows his bright side, with Alice (his personal nurse), he just can't help but be the same, and never complains. I think you are great!

Irene Slovacek enjoyed her Christmas holidays with her lovely daughter, Betty Jean Smith, and her son-in-law, Pete, in Chesapeake,

Virginia. When she came home, she was surprised with all the after effects the super-cold weather dealt us here in her absence.

Mary Schenburn, with her daughter, Susan, visited two of Mary's elderly aunts over a week in Eunice, Louisiana. Both ladies are past 90 years of age and were mighty happy to have them stay over a week. Mary said she enjoyed it but the trip tired both her and Susan Good-bye!

Antonio Czech Choral Club News

The Czech Choral Club held their regular practice at the Polish American Center, December 16, 1983.

A short practice was held followed by the Christmas Party.

Gifts were exchanged by the members and afterwards all members and guests joined in singing the beautiful Czech Christmas carols and English songs.

Then the group enjoyed a very special ham dinner with all the trimmings prepared by our coordinators, Sisters Theresa Jasek, Louise Hrncir and Maxine Pavliska.

It was indeed a group with a lot of Christmas spirit.

Members attending this activity were Adolph Popp, Agnes Popp, Maxine and Bill Pavliska, Louise and Manuel Hrncir, Emily and John Havelka, Lupe and Frank Jasek, Theresa and Louis Jasek, Annie and Joe Stryk, Edwin and Ann Jasek, Viola Mazac, Dorothy Crockett, Steve Lyssy, Georgia and Alvin Zidek, and Marie and Dominic Netek.

San Antonio Czech Choral Club was organized in 1970 and will celebrate their 14th year this June.

The practice is held each third Friday of the month at the PolishAmerican Center, 2611 Mission Road. The public is invited to come and listen to our singing.

Czech Classes at Memorial Adult Evening School in Houston Registration for the 1984 spring semester classes in Conversational Czech will take place between 5:30 and 8:30 p.m. January 18 and 19 at Memorial Senior High School, 935 Echo Lane, Houston, Texas 77024.

The beginners class, Czech I will be held Tuesday evenings, starting January 31 and the advanced class, Czech Inter. will be held Thursday evenings starting February 2. All class hours in the 13 week courses will be from 7 to 9 p.m. each evening.

Tuition for each course will be $35.00 plus $5.00 registration fee.

Saturday and being over after the noon meal Sunday. The site of the retreat is Camp Lone Star, a few miles southeast of LaGrange. All DYCs, Assistant DYCs, Youth Leaders and Assistants, plus anyone else directly involved in our youth program are welcome to attend.

Accomodations are limited, so that the final selections will have to be based on a need-to-know and eventual-use basis, as well as a firstcome-first-served basis, with a deadline of March 5, 1984. Please wait for the official form in the Vestnik.

A full day and a half's activities are being planned, including some evening functions. More details in the coming weeks.

The youth and youth leaders, as always, are to make note of the listing and record the number of points earned. From now on, we anticipate having only one set of questions for both juniors and seniors.

A total of 86 youth members participated in the December Project on Christmas. This is just a little bit under the number participating in November, but this can probably be attributed to the hectic days surrounding Christmas and Santa Claus. See last week's Vestnik for details on January Project.

held their monthly meeting January 8 at 2:30 p.m., in the Taiton Community Center.

Our meeting was brought to order

by President Vicki Dorotik. Michelle Srubar led the pledge, and Marcy Lea Dorotik recited a prayer.

For the contest, everyone was asked to draw a picture pertaining to New Year's Day. Contest winners in three categories were. (6-9): 1st —Lenice Kaspar, (10-12): 1st —Marcy Dorotik, 2nd —Landis Dornak; and (13-17): 1st — Michelle Srubar, 2nd —Jean Dorotik.

Thank you notes were read from Youth Leader Georgia Dorotik, Assistant Youth Leader Karen Kaspar, Mrs. Alvin Kahanek, Mrs. J. W. Krutilek and the Hillje Rest Home.

Then we worked on craft and we painted several ceramic pin-ons.

Afterwards, we had refreshments of punch, chocolate cornflake squares, and rice crispy squares.

We scheduled to have our Valentine Party February 10th, April 8th our Easter Program and District III meeting will be held April 29th.

LODGE 39, BRYAN YC NEW Dear Readers, Our monthly meeting was held January 8th. We made plans and discussed activities that will be held at our indoor rodeo the 20th of January, so all you youth club members come out for a night of fun at our lodge home.

We will have a special guest at our next meeting in February which will be the robot from College Station Police Department so this should be a lot of fun; don't forget!

We also planned having a Valentine dance in February with other lodges invited, so keep a watch out in the Vestnik for all of our dates.

The youth members donated cakes to the Rest Home December 7, also presented a program and gave gifts to the residents December 20th.

Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz thanked everyone for the nice ' Christmas gifts they gave her.

The youth will be making Valentine cards for the rest home.

They will also be making Valentine posters for their contest in February.

Birthday in January was for Craig Hromadka.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, February 5, 1984. Terry Hykel will bring the birthday cake for the February meeting.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY I, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 6, Cottonwood in behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest and sincere sympathy to the family of our departed brother ED SMAJSTRLA, of 910 S. Harrison St., West, Texas, who passed away Thursday evening, December 8, 1983 at West Community Hospital at the age of 85.

Brother Smajstrla was born 23 January 1898 in West and had lived in the area all his life. He was a retired farmer and an associate of Smajstrla Enterprises. He married Annie Holecek.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption and of KJT No. 31, SPJST Lodge No. 6, and Knights of Columbus No. 2305 of West.

Survivors include his wife, Annie Smajstrla of West; two sons, George X. Smajstrla of West and Edward H. Smajstrla of Marlin; one daughter, Mrs. Helen Zapalac of West; four grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren.

Brother Sefcik lived in Temple for 13 years and was a retired farmer and was a member of the SPJST for 60 years.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Agnes Sefcik of Temple; one son, Jamie Sefcik of Houston; two sisters, Lenora Pohl and Mrs. Ella Johnson, both of Monroe, Louisiana.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge Novy Tabor, No. 17, in behalf of the entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed sister ANTONIA NOVACEK, who passed away November 4, 1983, at the age of 89 years, 11 months, one day.

Mrs. Novacek was born in the New Tabor Community December 3, 1893, the daughter of Rosie Ondrasek Dubcak and George Dubcak. She was married to Joseph Frank Novacek January 11, 1921, at St. Mary's Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Frank Novacek, October 29, 1974; one son Edwin J. Novacek, and one brother Louis Dubcak.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Saturday, November 5, 1983, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Rev. Emilian Foltyn officiating.

Interment was in the New Tabor Cemetery.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge Karel Havlicek, No. 4, Hallettsville, Texas, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest and sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother, KENNETH RAY SEVCIK, who passed away Monday, January 2, 1984, in the Lavaca Medical Center, after a long battle with cancer at the age of 22 years.

He was born Nov. 27, 1961, to Alton J. and Marlyn Grones Sevcik of Hallettsville.

He was a member of the SPJST Lodge No. 4 and the Vsetin Czech Moravian Brethren Church.

A prayer service was held at 7 p.m., Wednesday, January 4, at the Kubena Funeral Home. The body remained at the funeral home until 8:45 a.m., Thursday, January 5, when it was taken to the CzechMoravian Brethren Church in Vsetin for services at 10 a.m. The Revs.

Henry Beseda, Jesse Skrivanek, and Celestino Say officiated. Burial was in the Vsetin Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Rick Rose, Otto Cervenka, Leon L. Kahanek III, Lester Little, Robert Kahanek, and Roger Sitka.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are two brothers, Ronnie Sevcik of Moravia and Mark Sevcik of Hallettsville; his paternal greatgrandmother, Mrs. Tracy Kovarek; his paternal grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Julius F. Born in Ellinger 28 December 1883, she was the daughter of Jan and Frances (Sebesta) Chupick. She had lived most of her life in La Grange.

She was a member of the Fayetteville Brethren Church.

Last rites were held at 2 p.m.

Tuesday, December 20 at the Chapel of Koenig-Pul Funeral Home, Inc., with the Rev. Newton Cox officiating. Burial was in the La Grange City Cemetery.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Evelyn Vogt of La Grange; one son, Leroy Sulik of Houston; three grandchildren and eight greatgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Emil J. Sulik, and her second husband, Frank Hruska, also several brothers and sisters.

Brother Maruna was born in Bell County, Texas and had lived in the area all his life. He served in the Army during World War II. He worked as a farmer retiring four years ago.

He was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a 50-year SPJST member of Lodge 47, Seaton.

Survivors include one brother, Frank Maruna of Temple; two sisters, Bessie Jez and Mrs. Christene Lugo, both of Temple.

The family requests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, 2202 N. 15th Street, Temple.

The Blind General One of history's greatest military commanders was blind.

While fighting in the service of King Wenceslas IV of Germany and Bohemia, Jan Zizka (1376-1424) lost his left eye. After Wenceslas' death in 1419, King Sigismund of Hungary moved to seize the throne. Zizka — a Bohemian nationalist and follower of the Protestant reformer Jan Hus — organized an armed resistance against Sigismund, who had executed Hus. A brilliant leader and tactician, Zizka pioneered the use of mobile artillery by mounting cannons on wagons. He also was the first field commander to deploy infantry, cavalry and artillery as a single unit.

Zizka's army routed Sigismund at every turn. Then, in 1421, while Zizka was laying siege to the castle of Rabi, an arrow struck him in his remaining eye. Although totally blind, he resumed command of his troops a few months later, winning victory after victory on the strength of data fed to him by his officers.

After his death, the resistance thrived for 12 years — largely because its blind leader had taught his officers so well.

Although this refreshing article printed in Parade section of The Houston Post; Dec. 11th 83, gives its readers a glimpse into rich Czech history, it has unfortunately several flaws because of its condensity. To understand the roles of Wenceslas (Vaclav) IV & Sigismund (Zikmund) in the proper perspective to The Blind General Jan Zizka, one has to take several basic facts into consideration.

Wenceslas and Sigismund were brothers, sons of Charles IV (Father of the Patria), king of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor. Beside the above mentioned brothers, Charles IV had another son named Jan and 3 daughters, Catherine (Katefina), Anna and Margaret (Marketa). Holy Roman Empire was at that time more or less a federation of several dukedoms and principalities in the territory of present West Germany, Austria and parts of northern Italy.

Kingdom of Bohemia under Charles IV consisted of Bohemia proper, Moravia, Silesia, Upper and Lower Lusatia, Upper Palatinate and Brandenburg. In contrast to some other Kingdoms in Europe, such as E. G. England, where the oldest son or daughter inherited the undivided territory, Charles IV has given his oldest son, Wenceslas, Bohemia, Silesia and Lower Lusatia, Sigismund got Brandenburg and Jan, Upper Lusatia. Moravia, where Jan Jindtich, brother of Charles IV, ruled for Charles as margrave, stayed in the hands of Jost and Prokop, sons of Jan Jindtich.

(Daughters of Charles IV were married off to the important members of European nobility; Anna became wife of English King Richard II, Catherine married Rudolf IV, Duke of Austria, and Margaret married Johann Burggrave of Hohenzollern, Nurnberg.)

Wenceslas IV (born 1361), the

first-born son of Charles IV, whom he succeeded in 1378, was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in 1376 — 2 years before death of his father — at Aix-la Chapelle, usual coronation place of Holy Roman Emperors.

Wenceslas' rule in Bohemia was interrupted by the conspiracy of the high nobility against him, by Wenceslas continuous quarrel with Jan of JenAtein, archbishop of Prague, by smouldering of religious unrest and by problems with the foreigners at Charles University.

When Wenceslas IV, in his function as Holy Roman Emperor, started in 1400 to negotiate with the king of France concerning the removal of the rival popes (Benedict VIII in Avignon and Boniface IX in Rome), he aroused such an enemity of the Archbishop of Mainz (the follower of Boniface), that, through his influence, Wenceslas was deposed by the imperial electors and elector Palatine Rupert of Falz was chosen to succeed him.

Wenceslas neither did accept his deposal, nor did he fought the usurper; thus there were technically 2 emperors from 1400 to 1410. After death of Rupert in 1410 the electors became stalemated; one side elected Sigismund, brother of Wenceslas IV as an emperor, the other side elected Jost of Moravia, cousin of Wenceslas IV. Jo g t of Moravia suddenly died and Sigismund was acknowledged, with his brother Wenceslas approval, as a new Holy Roman Emperor in 1411. The religious strife in Bohemia meantime progressively increased. Jan Hus, the main leader of the reformation movement in Bohemia, was summoned to the Council of Constance on the Swiss borders, where he was later — in July 1415 — burned at the stake as an heretic.

His safe-conduct obtained from Emperor Sigismund could not save him because the ecclesiastic authority of the Council was overwhelmingly stronger than any secular power in Europe at that time. Martyrdom of Hus deepened Prague's religious strife, which, in turn, was the cause of King Wenceslas IV death. When informed about the defenestration of the New City Council and its killing by' the mob on 30 of July 1419, Wenceslas IV got a heart attack and died.

Sigismund (born 14 of Feb. 1368), second son of Charles IV, took possession of the margraviate of Brandenburg after the death of his father in 1378. (Charles IV -- as already mentioned in this article — divided Czech crown lands among his sons.) By his marriage to Mary, heir of Louis the Great, king of Poland and Hungary, Sigismund became heir-apparent to the throne of these 2 countries. After the death of Louis in 1383 Poles decided though to have Jadwiga (Hedvika), Louis' younger daughter (married to Ladislas Jagello of Latvia) as their queen and the regency of the Hungarian throne was seized by Charles (Durazzo) of Naples, while Mary was held in captivity.

Sigismund rescued her and, on the murder of Durazzo, was in 1387 crowned King of Hungary. His war against the Turks, though aided by Bohemian, German and French contingents (Jan 2iika fought there, too), resulted in a disastrous defeat in 1396 at Nicopolis, compelling Sigismund to escape to Greece. On

12/VESTMK—Wednesday, January 18, 1984 his return in 1401 to Hungary his wife was dead, Ladislaus of Naples, son of Durazzo, sat on his throne and his brother Wenceslas maintained his throne with difficulty in Bohemia, having been deposed as the Holy Roman Emperor. Although Sigismund was imprisoned, he managed to escape, raised a large force and succeeded, in 1403, in subduing the whole of Hungary and expelling Ladislaus. In 1411 he was elected (with the approval of his brother Wenceslas IV, as mentioned before in this write up) Holy Roman Emperor and officially crowned at Aix-la Chapelle in 1414. During the Council of Constance 1414 -1418 he — according to many historians — allowed Jan Hus to be put to death in 1415 for heresy, an act, which resulted in Hussite Wars. (Perhaps it should be mentioned here, that Constance or Konstanz used to be frequently called in the Middle Ages Kostnitz, in Czech, Kostnice.)

Sigismund's brother Wenceslas IV, King of Bohemia, died in 1419, but in was not until 1431, when Sigismund signed the compact with the Council of Basel, that the followers of Jan Hus, known as Hussites, would permit the acknowledgement of his succession to the Bohemian throne.

To celebrate the end of the religious strife in Bohemia, Sigismund was crowned in 1431 as emperor in northern Italy in Milan and his coronation was repeated in 1433 in Rome. Sigismund officially approved in 1436 in Jihlava, Moravia, the 4 Compacts agreed on by the representatives of the Czech nation and the Council of Basel and was installed — 17 years after death of his brother — as Czech king. He died next year at age 69, on 9th of December 1437 in Znojmo, Moravia.

To add to the well-known and plentiful information about Jan Ziaa and to clarify some points about his life, I quote, in connection with The Parade's article of Houston's Post titled "The Blind General", the well-known Czech Historian Alois Jirasek to state, that 2i2ka lost his left eye in the battle of Tannenberg on 15th of July 1410, where he, and many other volunteers from Bohemia and Moravia, helped Poles to smash German Crusader's Order. — According to several sources including The Encyclopedia Americana, ZHIca fought with English against French at Agincourt on 25th Oct. 1415 and was involved at the turn of 15th century in the battles against Turks in Hungary. — Encyclopedia Americana presents another interesting statement in its write-up about Jan 2i2ka: "City of Prague revolted and refused to recognize 2i2ka's authority. He thoroughly subdued it in 1424." (My comment: Zizkas victory over Prague's troops at MaleS'ov in 1424 is a historical fact.) "In that year, it is said, Sigismund, realizing the impossibility of conquering Bohemia, began negotiations towards a treaty by the terms of which the Hussites were to have full religious liberty and 2fika was to be governor of Bohemia. Such negotiations, if undertaken, were interrupted by 2i'Zkas death at the siege of Pfibyslay."

I hope that the article "The Blind General" with enclosed write-up will enhance, in everyone of us to our, Czech heritage. Our history and

culture, admired and recognized by others, deserves our constant effort to perpetuate the glorious legacy of our fore-fathers.

TOMATO RECIPES Picante Sauce In a large pot combine: 6 qts. peeled, chopped ripe tomatoes 6 Tblsp. salt 1/2 cup vinegar 1/2 cup sugar 1 1/2 to 2 Tblsp. garlic 6 cups bell pepper, chopped 6 cups onions, chopped Fine chopped jalapeno to taste Cook 50 to 60 minutes or until thickness desired; stirring constantly. Pour boiling hot into hot sterilized jars, seal each jar immediately as it is filled.

Home Canned Barbecue Sauce 10 pounds tomatoes peeled and cored; 2 large onions, finely chopped (about 2 cups); 3 cloves garlic, minced; 1 tablespoon crushed red pepper; 1 tablespoon crushed celery seed; 1 1/2 cups brown sugar; 1 cup vinegar; 1/3 cup lemon juice; 1 tablespoon dry mustard; 2 teaspoons salt; 1 1/2 teaspoons ground mace; 1 teaspoon ground ginger; 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon.

Chop peeled and cored tomatoes in a food processor or blender.

Combine chopped tomatoes, chopped onions, minced garlic, red pepper and celery seed in a large (6 to 8 quart) saucepot. Simmer, covered, until vegetables are soft (about 30 minutes). Prepare home canning jars and lids according to the manufacturer's instructions. Put tomato mixture through a food mill and press out liquid and pulp.

Discard seeds. Return tomato mixture to the saucepot; add remaining ingredients. Cook over low heat until mixture thickens (about 30 minutes). Carefully pour hot sauce into hot jars, leaving 1/4 inch head space. Adjust caps.

Process 20 minutes in boiling water bath canner. Yield: about 3 pint jars.

Spicy Tomato Catsup 12 pounds ripe tomatoes, coarsely chopped; 2 large onions, cut into pieces; 1 red bell pepper, seeded and cut into pieces (if not available use green pepper); 1 tablespoon each, mustard seed, whole black peppers, and dry basil; 2 teaspoons whole allspice; 2 small dried hot chili peppers; 1 large bay leaf; 1 whole cinnamon stick; 1 1/2 cups firmly packed brown sugar; 1 tablespoon each, salt and paprika; 1 cup vinegar.

In a blender or food processor, whirl tomatoes, onions, and bell pepper, a small amount at a time, until smooth. Press through a wire strainer and discard pulp. You should have 6 quarts of puree.

In an 8 to 10-quart pot, bring puree to boiling over medium-high heat. Boil gently, uncovered and stirring often, until reduced by about half (about 1 1/2 to 2 hours).

As mixture thickens, stir often and reduce heat to prevent sticking.

Add vinegar during last 10 to 15 minutes of cooking. Discard spice bag.

You can chill the catsup, pour into freezer container, cover, and freeze, if you like. Or prepare 4 pint size canning jars in boiling water bath, filling jars to within 1/4 inch of rim.

Process for 20 minutes. Makes 2 quarts.

Tomato Relish 2 gal. ripe tomatoes, diced 2 pt. vinegar 2'/z cup sugar 2 1/2 tsp. cinnamon 1 or 2 hot peppers 21/2 tsp. cloves 2 1/2 tsp. allspice 2 1/2 tsp. salt 4 onions, cut up 2 bell peppers, cut up Simmer for 4 hours, stirring occasionally. Pour into sterilized pint jars and seal.

Good on vegetables or meat.

Makes 8 pints.

Chili Sauce 1 gallon peeled, chopped ripe tomatoes 2 cups chopped onion 2 cups chopped sweet red pepper 1 small hot pepper, chopped 1 clove garlic, thinly sliced 1 teaspoon whole cloves 2 teaspoons whole allspice 1 cup brown sugar 3 cups vinegar 3 tablespoons salt 2 teaspoons whole cinnamon Combine chopped vegetables. Tie spices in a bag and add to vegetables. Cook vegetables rapidly, stirring often to prevent sticking. When the vegetables have cooked to about half the original amount, add the sugar, vinegar and salt. Boil rapidly for 5 minutes, stirring constantly. Pour into hot jars. Close. Process in boiling water bath 5 minutes. Start to count processing time as soon as water returns to boiling.

DIABETIC CANNING: Tomato Sauce 18 tomatoes 2 medium onions 2 teaspoons salt 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves 2 cups vinegar 2 green peppers 3 tablespoons artificial sweetner, or to taste 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon allspice Peel, core, and chop tomatoes.

Chop peppers and onions fine.

Combine all ingredients. Boil slowly 4 hours or until thick. Fill boiling hot to within 1/2 inch of top of , jar.

Process 10 minutes in Boiling Water Bath.

4 quarts medium cucumbers, sliced 1 1/2 cups small white onions, sliced 1/3 cup salt 2 quarts ice, crushed or cubes 4 1/2 cups sugar 1 1/2 tsp. turmeric 1 1/2 tsp. celery seed 2 Tblsp. mustard seed 3 cups vinegar (4-6 acidity) Wash cucumbers thoroughly, using a vegetable brush, drain on rack.

Slice unpeeled cucumbers into 1/8inch to 1/4-inch slices; discard ends.

Add onions and garlic. Add salt and mix thoroughly; cover with crushed ice or ice cubes; let stand 3 hours.

Drain thoroughly; remove garlic cloves. Combine sugar, spices and vinegar; heat just to boiling. Add drained cucumber and onion slices and heat 5 minutes. Pack hot pickles loosely into clean, hot pint jars and cover with hot liquid to 1/2 inch from

top. Adjust jar lids. Process in boiling water for 5 minutes (start to count processing time as soon as water in canner returns to boiling).

Remove jars and complete seals if necessary. Set jars upright on a wire rack or folded towel to cool. Place them several inches apart. NOTE: Sugar may be reduced to 4 cups if a less sweet pickle is desired.

Ethel Selr s Kosher Dills 1 quart water 1 pint vinegar (4-6 acidity) 1/2 cup salt 3 lbs. small pickling cucumbers Bring water, vinegar and salt to a boil and remove from heat. Pack fresh cucumbers in sterilized jars.

To each quart jar add: 2 large heads dill 2 tsp. mixed pickling spices 2 cloves garlic 2 small red hot pepper pods, seeds removed Pour liquid over slowly, fill jars and seal. Process in boiling-water bath for 20 minutes for quarts.

Pickles are ready in 6 to 8 weeks.

Dill Pickles 4 lbs. or 2 qts. cucumbers 6 Tblsp. salt 2 cups vinegar 3 cups water Dill seed or fresh heads dill weed Mixed pickling spices, if desired Black peppercorns or small red peppers, if desired Wash cucumbers thoroughly. For whole cucumbers, small sizes up to 4 inches are preferred. Larger sizes may be packed whole provided they are processed for a longer time.

Usually with larger cucumbers it is better to slice, quarter or halve lengthwise before pickling. Combine salt, vinegar and water. Heat to boiling. Pack cucumbers into hot, sterilized jars. For each pint jar, add 1 tsp. dill seed or 1 head dill, 1 1/2 tsp. mixed pickling spices and 3 black peppercorns. Fill with boiled vinegar-salt solution to 1/2 inch of top for quarts or 1/4 inch for pints.

Process large whole cucumbers in boiling water allowing 10 minutes for pint jars and 20 minutes for quarts. Process small whole cucumbers, slices, halves, or quarters in boiling water allowing 5 minutes for pint jars and 10 minutes for quarts.

Makes 6 pints.

Letos, v druhe polovine ledna, uplynulo 170 let od narozni jednoho z nejznameAch spisovatelii 'Ceske fra§ky, Frant. Jaromira Rube ge. Tento vlasteneckY spisovatel se narodil 16 ledna 1814 v Cakove u Pelhiimova v Oechach, kde jeho otec byl pivov_arskkm sladkem. Rube§ova rodina se zahy plestehovala do Cerhenic u Kolina a tu, v Polabi, y e Zlatem pruhu zeme Ceske, budouci spisovatel prail sve detstvi. Pro sve neobyeejne nadani byl poslan rodiei na gymnasium v Nemeckem Brode (po prvni svetove \rake nazvanem Havliekiiv Brod) a po absolvovani teto steedni §koly na filosofii do Prahy. Rubes vstoupil v roce 1835 na bohosloveckou fakultu, pozdeji vAak (v letech 1837-40), studoval prava a pak do roku 1847 pusobil v Praze jako soudni neednik.

Wash cucumbers thoroughly; scrub with vegetable brush; drain. Cover with the 5 brine. Let set overnight; drain. Combine vinegar, salt, sugar, water, and mixed pickling spices that are tied in a clean, thin, white cloth; heat to boiling. Pack cucumbers into clean quart jars. Add mustard seed, dill plant or seed, and garlic to each jar; cover with boiling liquid to witin 1/2 inch from top of jar. Adjust jar lids. Process in boiling water for 20 minutes (start to count the processing time as soon as the hot jars are placed in actively boiling water.) Remove jars and complete seals if necessary. Set jars upright on a wire rack or folded towel to cool. Place them several inches apart.
