carry the load, take an active part in lodge affairs, assist in lodge projects, encourage participation of the membership, and help recommend in securing new members as well.

These are more than suggestions for a New Year's resolution, they are actually a part of the obligations which each member accepts when he or she becomes a member of our Society. Frankly speaking, these obligations become like a yardstick for the measuring of a member's activity. If they are not being fulfilled, then, indeed, it is time to make a resolution for the New Year.

Most successful enterprises generally move forward by the momentum of large numbers of people. This applies particularly to our Society. Through our local lodges, we must continue to depend upon every individual member to contribute something toward the preservation of our fraternal order.

Fraternalism implies working together for a common cause. This is an exemplification of real democracy and cultivates a family spirit of mutual love and good will. Our Society, which was formed and built on the rock foundation of these ideals and principles, depends upon its individual members to assist in promoting these beautiful traditions and to carry on in the spirit of our founders.

It is quite obvious that each member has a certain responsibility to attend the meeting of his or her lodge. If every member shirked this responsibility, our lodges would cease to exist, the Supreme Lodge would no longer be required to answer to democratically elected delegates. The Society would no longer be entitled to operate under the fraternal insurance laws and we would lose the benefits of low-cost life insurance which we still enjoy as members of the SPJST. *** To the Vestnik Correspondents: It is my, privilege to thank you one and all for the cooperation you have given me during the past year again.

The editor has endeavored to impress you with the fact that the Vestnik (Herald) will be as good as we ourselves will make it and also believe at this time that we did accomplish something and hope that your enthusiasm will again be displayed for the next year and will be increased.

Actually your task as reporter for your mother lodge is a vital one. It is up to you to transfer the beneficial thoughts of your brothers and sisters from their minds into these columns for the benefit and inspiration of all.

It is this collective and cooperative effort that makes our SPJST Vestnik successful and influential.

The Vestnik periodical paper goes also to out-of-state members as well as to other foreign countries. The Vestnik is proud of its correspondents whose reportorial courage is of a high standard; in fact, it is the largest circulation of any Czech society in Texas.

It will be the editor's aim to continue to satisfy the members' wishes for a weekly Vestnik. Also through most of your efforts we can continue making'the Vestnik looked forward to, and helping to make its contents as interesting as possible (Continued on Page 9)

While a good number of individuals has indicated interest in purchasing the book, the number of lodges is woefully low — 40 to be exact. That's not a very good percentage out of some 128.

Before too long, we hope to publish a picture of what the front cover and title page will look like, but of course, we can't show you what the entire book will look like because there isn't one at the present time.

Dear Members and Friends: Our December meeting and Christmas Party was held Sunday, December 11th at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Tommie Surovik with twenty-one members and guests, present.

Various items of interest were discussed and election of officers was held. Those elected for next year are: President—Tom Surovik, Vice

The regular meeting was called to order one week early by President Roy Simank.

Floyd Felfe led the Pledge of Allegiance.

All officers were present, except one.

Secretary Audrey Boutwell read the minutes which were approved.

Delegates elected to the convention at Corpus Christi will be Evelyn Gustafson, Irene Helgren and Floyd and Peggy Felfe. Alternates are Roy Simank, Leslie Gustafson, Dale Kessel and Verda Krause.

We voted to have an ad in the Convention Book for the convention in Corpus Christi.

Taylor will have a workshop on drug abuse January 13th and several plan to attend.

We have five new members: Matthew Wayne Helgren, Jacob Helgren, Jerry, Jason and Sharina Orts.

Mrs. Lambert Peterson is in St. David's Hospital. We wish her a speedy recovery.

Sister Janelle Mogoyne sent a sympathy card to Mrs. Arthur Davis. We held a moment of silence.

A $10 memorial contribution was sent in memory of Brother Arthur Davis. Our thoughts and prayers are with their family.

Brother Roy Simank thanked all who helped with the cleanup of the hall in November. It was a job welldone.

New Year's Eve dance tickets are available in advance for $7.50 per person; tickets at the door will sell for $10 per person. The music will be by the Vrazels.

Sister Adele Simank won the door prize. We then adjourned for refreshments furnished by the ladies.

Our Christmas dance held December 17th was the best ever; the hall was beautifully decorated.

24, Cyclone Makes Contributions Lodge

Dear Members: Our meeting was called to order

by President David Vanicek.

The flag was presented by Christy Marek, Bradley Marek and Jason Harvell who then led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing for the deceased members.

On the sick list are Treasurer E. J. Geistman who was home with the flu and it was mentioned that Sister Gladys Tyroch is still having problems with her finger that she had injured some time ago and spent a lot of time in the hospital; to both of them, we wish a speedy recovery.

Secretary Pat Vanicek read the correspondence: a letter from the Child Abuse Center, asking for donations, a nice Christmas card from the Supreme Lodge, and from Lodge 79 in Corpus Christi hosting the convention asking if we would like to advertise in the Convention Brochure.

The letter from Child Abuse Center was turned over to the Donation Committee and they decided to donate $50. The Donation Committee also acted upon a donation of $50 to Sister Gladys Tyroch who has problems with her finger.

Sister Arleen Tschoener and Sister Louise Zavodny volunteered to get the information together for our ad in the SPJST Convention Brochure.

We had a nice Christmas Party held Sunday, December 11th at the lodge with good eats, a nice program by the youth members, and a surprise visit from Santa Claus. I, again, want to thank the ladies who baked the turkeys and made dressing; I mentioned your names in the last letter. A special thanks to Sister LaVerne Cabla and Sister Louise Zavodny for setting up all the tables, making the tea and overseeing all the work with the meal, plus Youth Leader Carol Chervenka and her Assistant Shirley Waits; thanks for a nice program!

The youth members had the ticket drawings and these were the winners: Willie Mae Vanicek — $35 , Denise Posvar — $25 , Vallie Mae Hrachovy — $10, and Jerry Zavodny -- $5. The youngsters wish to thank everyone who bought tickets for supporting their moneymaking project.

New member, Chad Bruggman, was accepted by the members who was signed up by Sister Laveda Geistman.

Brother Eugene Haisler thanked the members for their support while he served as vice-president and that he enjoyed the job. Financial Secretary Doris Svoboda likewise expressed her thanks, at the November meeting, when she chose not to run again for the office.

Election of Officers Held at Lodge No. 32, Victoria December 4th, we had our annual Christmas Dinner at the Community Center Annex. As usual, our ladies outdid themselves preparing many good things to go with smoked turkey. A good time was had by all who attended.

December 7th, the annual election of officers was held. Elected were: Ella Arnold — president, Franklin Elles— vice-president, Frank A HuVar — secretary, Evelyn Horelka — treasurer, Katherine Wokaty — financial-secretary and Sandra Koutny — reporter.

New members admitted in recent months are: Christopher Scott Springer, William Edward Springer, Ardis Lynn HuVar, Wesley Joel Schmidt and James Edward Koop, Jr. Transferees from Houston Lodge No. 88 were: Joseph Sykora, Mary Sykora and their daughter, Rosalie.

Also, elected December 7th, were members of the Board of Trustees Michael Ahlstrom, Julius Koutny and John Motal.

I want to congratulate Darla Elles Buccigrossi, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Elles. She received a Master of Education Degree from Angelo State University in San Angelo at summer commencement exercises August 19. Mrs. Buccigrossi is a 1977 graduate of Stroman High School in Victoria, Texas.

-- Mr. Sefcik spoke of nostalgia in his column in the December 14th issue of Vestnik. Since this will probably be my last letter as reporter, I would like to put down a few things about Christmas. When I was a child and my beloved grandparents were both still alive, Christmas always was special. Christmas Eve my, cousin, Edna Hoek, and I always hung our long cotton stockings on the wall behind the wood heater in grandmother's dining room. In the morning they were filled with fruit and cookies. Christmas morning we would finish polishing and shining the house: that is after we were old enough to do so!

Then we would help ,set the table for the expected 35 or more people who came, for dinner. After the dishes were washed and put away everyone would gather in the room where the Christmas tree stood with all the presents under it. We did not get things like the children do nowadays, but I would be willing to bet that our simple family Christmas would stack up against any of the present day celebrations.

I want to take this opportunity to wish my friends and relatives in Dallas, Waco, Austin, Kenedy and Rowena a very blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year.

To all other lodges and members, may your holidays be filled with love and affection and your New Year bring health and happiness!

Lodge No. 47, Seaton Meeting Dear Members and Friends, Our December meeting was called to order promptly at 2 p.m. by President Jerry Pechal. Woodrow Marek and J. D. Chlapek, were flagbearers and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Roll call of officers and chairpersons showed all present and all gave satisfactory reports. Willie Kohutek reported that the Insurance Committee had met at Headquarters and if anyone had anything to bring up to the Insurance Committee, to send it in writing to be considered.

Correspondence consisted of a thank you note from Evelyn Johnson thanking the lodge for the memorial made to her mother, Anna Hruska; also a thank you note from Will Junek for being remembered when he was ill; a Thank you note from Leah Marek for being remembered when she was in the hospital; also Tim Wilson sent a Thank you note for being remembered when he cut his hand.

A special thanks to Martha and Alfred Klusacek for helping decorate the hall in November.

There was a report on the progress of the child abuse project

by Dolores Skrabanek. It was decided to donate $50. every three months to the project plus any toys, groceries or clothes that anyone would wish to donate. These items can be given to either of these four ladies: Dolores Skrabanek, Ann Hejl, Helen Janacek or Emily Stuteville or may be taken to Bernie Gebala at Supreme Lodge. They will see to it that these items will get to the proper place.

New bar chairpersons for 1984 will be Henry and Helen Janacek.

Entertainment chairpersons — Jerry and Dorothy Pechal; ticket chairperson — Dorothy Pechal; Czech Reporter — Anna Jakubec; English Reporter — Adeline Kohutek.

This is also the time of year that we should especially remember those less fortunate than we are with our prayers and visits. Of course, we should remember them all year and should all resolve to do this. Special greetings to our loved ones in nursing homes and shut-ins.

Lodge 92, Fort Worth, Texas SPJST

Dear Readers: December 18, 1983, found us here in Fort Worth with temperatures in the 20s and a wind-chill factor of -5 degrees. Rental of the hall on our regular meeting date of the second Sunday of the month pushed us into this crowded day of fun and business, but the weather certainly wasn't going to stop a dedicated group of willing workers to make an eventful day.

Starting at 8 a.m. Sunday morning, as the hall was being cleaned by our great managers — Frankie and Joyce Tesar, members began arriving to decorate the hall and to fill the Christmas bags for our traditional Christmas party later in the afternoon. Christmas cheer was aplenty, I heard, and then Marie Tesar brought her famous Chicken Noodle Soup and all had a brunch accented with Joyce Tesar's Christmas punch.

Mid-morning found Helen Kubala and Liz Howard busy in the kitchen fixing turkey and dressing, giblet gravy, yams, and pea salad to serve later for members who began arriving for the meeting that started at 1 p.m.

President Albert Kubala led us in silent prayer for our departed Treasurer and Reporter John Murphy, who passed away December 11, 1983, after a short illness. We express our deepest sympathy and love to all of John's family; he will be missed greatly for he truly loved his lodge and lodge friends and we hope that he knew how much we loved him and respected his judgment and skill in handling our affairs. John and Victoria Murphy have been faithful workers in this lodge for many, many years — including being managers of the hall in its early years.

All officers and committee reports were given and approved. Sunshine Committee Chairman Martha Durham reported get-well wishes were sent the following members who were ill and in the hospital during the past month — Jaromir Becan, Alice Lindsey, and Mr. Zubb Alene Kercho's father.

Sophie Newton had surgery for leg amputation. A new baby boy at the home of Debbie and Phil Dvorak

made Joe Lynn and Billie Joyce KriVanek grandparents again — Inez Krivanek is the mud greatgrandmother.

It was nice to have Albert and Helen Kubala's newest son-in-law and family in the meeting with us: Mike and Sherri Watkins and Carla.

Cute Kim Kubala was there, too.

Members are being asked to consider and let their wishes be known in the next few meetings as to whether night meetings during the week would be preferable rather than having lodge meetings the second Sunday of each month. Lodge rentals, especially during the holiday season and during wedding months, are forcing conflicts.

However, lodge members should always feel free to express what priorities rentals should have over members' desires and use of the lodge hall, and this is exactly what your opinion should reflect when discussing this with lodge officers and By-law Committee members.

Your opinion is important and we urge all to consider what is best for their particular situation and vote accordingly.

The managers reminded us to make reservations for the New Year's Eve dance to be held Saturday, December 31, from 9 to 1 a.m. Tickets are $7.50 per person; $15 per couple. A free keg of beer, donated by the band -- the Bill Kucera Czechmates — will help start the festivities. Call 624-1361 for reservations -- it's filling up fast!

President Albert Kubala adjourned the meeting until the second Sunday of January at 2 p.m.

Members then enjoyed a lovely holiday meal of turkey and dressing prepared by Helen Kubala and Liz Howard and pastries brought by the ladies of our lodge. Thanks to all of you for a delicious meal!

At 5 p.m. lodge doors opened for our annual Lodge No. 92 Christmas Party with program by the children under the guidance of Youth Leader and Assistant Youth Leader Gordon and Cheryl Hubenak. We were proud that so many little children and youth braved the cold weather to participate in our program --their songs, recitations, and greetings cheered all of us and you missed a treat if you weren't here to watch their eyes looking for Santa coming down Santa Claus Lane.

Santa did arrive and had many special items packed away for each of them. He even let them sit on his knee, individually, at the end of the program so that proud Mommys and Daddys could take pictures as a momento to take home. Bags of fruit and candy and nuts were given each person who attended and refreshments from Lodge No 92 and the ladies who made cookies were enjoyed by all To end this special evening, Bunny Tesar's beautiful

gingerbread house was auctioned off for the benefit of the Youth Club.

by Mrs. Tom Valek and Mrs. Evelyn Novotny, will benefit abused and neglected children in Ellis County.

In addition to the prize give-away and the donations, lodge members held three stew suppers to benefit these special children in Ellis County. All in all, the lodge raised over $1,300 to help these children who must rely on their community for assistance. The money will be used to provide medical and dental care, Christmas and birthday gifts, school clothes, school supplies, toys, band uniforms and instruments and other special activities.

Results of Lodge 177, Academy Annual Meeting The December 14th meeting of Lodge 177 at Academy was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by President Jerry Tomastik.

Member Frankie Oujesky is in the VA Hospital and Helen Bland's mother is also. We wish these two a speedy recovery.

A thank you card was read from Walter Jezek who had gotten out of the hospital Wednesday after having surgery. We are glad to have you back, Walter. Also a thank you card was read from Gene Reed (who was at our lodge with his daughter, Youth Leader Ann Tomastik) for the flowers.

All officers were present and all chairpersons reports were given.

Youth Leader Ann Tomastik reported the First House needed dishes, bedspreads and cannister set and would be purchased from the "Child Abuse" account, also the committee decided to give the house parents gift certificates for Christmas.

Fourteen new members were accepted: they are Heath M. Green, Charles R. Green, Jackson B. Stevenson, Darrell R. Stevenson, Robert W. Stevenson, William E. Keis, Clarence Barron, Sherry L. No old business was brought up for discussion so we went into new business. We got right into our election of officers and delegates.

December 16, 1983 our lodge was ten years old. Faithful members who were here when we first opened up remember what a rough struggle we had starting out and looking around at our monthly meetings; you can still see this handful of people still carrying on always working for our lodge; there have been a few dropped out but these same 8 or so faithful members are still here working for the betterment of the lodge. We are eternally grateful for these people; you few know who I am speaking of and bouquets to you because you deserve it.

Delegates elected were Ray and Dorthy Lisenbe, Louis Driska, Jerry Tomastik, Libby Bartek. Alternates will be Jean Driska and Walter Jezek.

Supreme Lodge Vice President Bernie Gebala of Temple installed the new officers.

There was a disparaging comment

made when our "Child Abuse" report was given and I sincerely think it was demeaning to this person, because we, at the lodge are trying to help these abused children and one has to give with an openheart or a closed mouth.

Mr. Jezek and I delivered the food, gifts and usable articles to First House Saturday morning.

Donors, please do not give men's and women's clothing because these items cannot be used at First Place; to all of you who brought usable gifts: we THANK YOU! To the family who gave a sack of shoes, Tshirts, brief socks and Velour shirts that was heaven sent; whoever you were, you deserve a pat on the back because these were all wellreceived.

Phil Weadock, Willie Dusek, Louis Driska and Louise Cox were on the Tabulating Committee.

All those 90 people who turned out for election: do try to return to help the ones you voted for to serve the lodge in the new year.

Notice to Alief and Surrounding Area.

Alief Independent School District is again offering Czech I (beginning Czech or continuation of previous fall course, pending on the enrollment) at its community evening school in January (Spring Semester 1984).

Czech lessons will be taught Tuesday night; 7 to 9 p.m. for 14 weeks, starting Jan. 10th '84. John J. Karas will be again the instructor of this course. Tuition, set by the school district, will be $50.

This course will develop basic Czech grammar with simple vocabulary for practical use wherever Czech is spoken.

Lodge 186, Caldwell Hosted Two Charity Events Our lodge here in Caldwell hosted two charitable events during the month of November.

November 26th, our usual Saturday night entertainment was held with the proceeds going to a fund for Kevin Baassen who was badly hurt in an automobile accident and is in Scott and White Hospital in Temple.

November 27th, the Future Homemakers Club from the high school used our facilities to sponsor a Skate-a-Thon for Cystic Fibrosis.

Dear Members and Friends, The December meeting was attended by twenty-one members and guests, Mary and Benny Pavey, Lisa Hopkins, Dan Lundein of Oklahoma City and Master Bobby Holford.

The birthday members were Janie Allen, John Zubb, Mary Kubala and Marie Tesar. Mr. Zubb is still at Harris Hospital after undergoing surgery in November. We do hope that he is on the way to a full recovery soon.

Donald Steinman and my spouse, Roy, missed all the festivity since they took a two-week trip to visit friends and relatives in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. Roy visited our son, Tony, his wife, Kathy, and three grandsons in Chicago. A pleasant Sunday afternoon visit with the Benedicine Sisters in Lisle, Illinois that had taught school in Ft. Worth,

I wish to report that Mrs. Vlasta Dolkos has been moved to the Jackson Square Nursing Center.

Lodge No. 191, Lufkin

Lodge 191 was chartered July 24, 1983. Some short term goals were set and it is a pleasure to report that most have been accomplished in the established time frame. Our objectives were to have 200 members, $225,000 insurance in force and an interim lodge building furnished with tables, chairs and a music system, organized events and an active youth group. With the aid and assistance of some hard-working members, we are there. Eight families plus Louis Hanus and his lovely bride have donated a table and seven chairs (cost of $100).

Louis met with us at the December business meeting and presented the Charter to our Lodge 191 on which were listed the names of Charter members. It was pleasing to have an "official" member visit and share thoughts with our "family".

The youth group, though small in numbers, is large in effort. The group had a float in the Lufkin Christmas Parade.

Besides the obvious meaning of SPJST in the Piney woods, it also stands for Special People Joyfully Striving Together. Over the years many of our members have visited with other lodges. Persimmons Galore in East Bell County

Lodge 88, Houston Birthday Club Report Wednesday, December 14, 1983, President Pearl Hanka called the meeting to order. She read a prayer entitled, "Almighty God," which everyone always enjoys her readings of poems.

Sister Rosalee Kostom, secretary, read the minutes from the previous meeting and they were approved as read. Correspondence was acknowledged and also read.

Sister Lillie Spies, treasurer, gave her report and, like always, it was a good one Sunshine Reporter Sister Mary Kosut gave her report. She sent`two get-well cards to Sister Cecelia Klecka and Sister. Sylvia Melia and birthday cards to the sisters who had a birthday in December.

Sister Rita Alexander did not make the meeting, she was ill at home. Sister Della Kadlecek will enter the hospital this Friday to have repair work done on her eye.

Brother Homer Alexander entered the hospital Wednesday to have surgery on one of his eyes.

Although the weather outside was frightful, the company inside was delightful, as the Seaton Choral Club celebrated Christmas Sunday afternoon at Seaton Star Hall. The afternoon was spent in conversation, domino games, exchanging gifts, and eating'delicious barbeque and all the trimmings, topped off with sinfully rich sweets.

STATEWIDE YOUTH LEADERS' RETREAT The Statewide Youth Leaders' Retreat in 1984 will be held Saturday and Sunday, March 24th and 25th, the retreat starting at 9 a.m.

Saturday and being over after the noon meal Sunday. The site of the retreat is Camp Lone Star, a few miles southeast of LaGrange. All DYCs, Assistant DYCs, Youth Leaders and Assistants, plus anyone else directly involved in our youth program are welcome to attend.

Accomodations are limited, so that the final selections will have to be based on a need-to-know and eventual-use basis, as well as a firstcome-first-served basis, with a deadline of March 5, 1984. Please wait for the official form in the Vestnik.

A full day and a half's activities are being planned, including some evening functions. More details in the coming weeks.

When the Finance Committee and the Convention start looking at this reimbursement, they may conclude that, since so many didn't report, that the remuneration can be dropped. A total of 19 checks (25 last quarter) are going out in the aggregate amount of $382.50 ($507.50 last quarter). The average monthly attendance was 254.99 (344.84 last quarter). These are sizable decreases in all three areas.

Let's hope that the next quarter is an improvement. I don't think there was a decrease in activities, but simply a failure to report them. It's nothing but money ...

Second Quarterly Report Dear Members: Reports for the second youth quarter for the mo. the of September, October, and November have been received and reimbursements sent to the participating clubs. Perhaps it was the holiday season, but the reports for this quarter constitute one of the lowest of the year. Out of 43 youth clubs only 20 sent in a report (73 and 77 make one report), and 23 are being listed as "No Report".

Dear Readers, Sunday, December 11, we had our Our monthly meeting of Lodge 24 Youth Club was held December 14, monthly meeting. After the meeting we went caroling to a rest home and 1983 at 7:30 p.m.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the members of Lodge No. 49, Rowena, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother FRANK J. DOROTIK, who passed away March 13, 1983 in League City, Texas, at the age of 82 years.

Brother Dorotik was born in Bell County, Texas. He married Martha Sliva 29 December 1926 in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Rowena.

He was a farmer all his life and was a school bus driver for Ballinger, Texas schools for 20 years.

Brother Dorotik was a member of Lodge 49, Rowena.

Survivors include his widow, Martha Dorotik of Rowena; two daughters, Mrs. Mildred Polasek of League City, and Mrs. Mary Ann Cain of Seabrook; five grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Mary Marecek of Rowena, Mrs. Tony Marecek of San Angelo, and Mrs. Caroline Kvapil of Mereta; and one brother, Simon Dorotik of Rowena.

Rosary was recited at 8 p.m.

Wednesday in St. Joseph's Church at Rowena. Mass was held at 10 a.m.

Thursday in St. Joseph's Church, with Father Zientek officiating; burial was in St. Joseph's Cemetery under the direction of Rain-Seale Funeral Home, Ballinger, Texas.

KUCERA, who passed away November 16, 1983, at the age of 87 at a Victoria nursing home after a long illness.

Sister Kucera was a member of Lodge No. 32 since 1935. She was born December 18, 1895, in Tivoli, Texas to Louis and Mary JaeIt DuAek. She was a long-time resident of Victoria and was a member of First English Lutheran Church.

Services were held at 11 a.m.

Saturday, November 19, at Colonial Funeral Home, with the Rev. Harold Pearson officiating. Burial was in the Colonial Gardens Cemetery.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Betty Jo Janecek of Kansas City, Mo.; three sons, Robert Kucera of Victoria; George Kucera of Palo Alto, Calif.; and Joe Kucera of Corpus Christi; eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Joseph W. Kucera. who died in 1973.

Mrs. Jankowiak passed away Thursday afternoon, November 24 at Gulf Coast Medical Center in Wharton, following a brief illness.

Survivors include: 3 sons, Wallace M. Jankowiak of Granbury, Texas, Dennis A. Jankowiak of Stafford, and Mike Jankowiak of Rosenberg; 14 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Mrs. Walter (Vlasta) Ludwig, and Mrs. D. C. (Mary) Tidlacka; 3 brothers, Frank Brandt of Hungerford, Edwin Brandi of Houston, and Edmund Brandt of East Bernard.

She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.

Brother Dobias died Monday, November 28, 1983, being involved in a train accident. He was born August 21, 1898, in Fayette County, Texas to Charlie and Barbara (Orsak) Dobias. He had been a resident of East Bernard for the past 80 years and was the foreman of Wharton County Precinct No. 2 for 38 years before his retirement in 1967.

He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard and a member of S.P.J.S.T. He married Bessie Hranicky September 7, 1925, in East Bernard.

Rosary was recited Tuesday, November 29, 1983 at 7:30 p.m. in the chapel of the Wharton Funeral Home with Father Henry Rachunek officiating. A funeral mass was offered Wednesday, November 30, at 10 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard with Father Joe Vrana, Father Henry Rachunek, and Monsignor John Kukral officiating. Entombment followed in Holy Cross Mausoleum in East Bernard.

Survivors include his wife, Bessie Dobias of East Bernard; two daughters, Mrs. E. G. (Helen Marie) Matula of Wharton and Mrs. V. J.

(Delores) Vacek of Victoria; three sisters, Mrs. Annie Borak and Mrs. Albina Kozelsky, both of East Bernard, and Mrs. Frances Brod of Wharton; two brothers, John Dobias and Robert Dobias, both of East Bernard; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Daryl Elles, 15, center, is beginning his seventh year as a 4-H member, and his third at Guadalupe 4-H Club. The family is rich in 4-H tradition. His mother, Mrs. Lois Elles, right, was a 4-H member for nine years ending in 1956, and was a member of a County-Wide Girls Club. She recently received recognition for 15 years as an adult leader. Daryl's grandmother, left, Mrs. Leola Kahlich, was a 4-H member in Victoria County in 1926-30. Daryl has two sisters, Darla and Allison, who were also 4-11 members.

Mr. & Mrs. Franklin Elles and their three children are also members of Lodge No. 32. Franklin was elected vice-president at the December 7 meeting. Mrs. Kahlich's parents, Jos. F. Lala and his wife, Annie Shiller Lala, were members of Lodge No. 32 for many years. He - 42 years and Mrs. Lala - 62 years. Their daughter, Ella Lala Arnold, was elected to the office of president of Lodge No. 32 also December 7. Mrs. Arnold has been a member since 1937.

Blackeyed Peas Are A New Year's Tradition Texans traditionally eat blackeyed peas on New Year's Day to insure prosperity and good luck for the coming year. This tradition will be observed once again in 1984 when we get out the kettle or new crock pot to cook the blackeyed peas.

"The peas should be soaked before cooking to reduce required cooking time This can be accomplished quickly by boiling them in water for two minutes, removing from the heat and soaking for one hour. They are then ready to cook. If you prefer to soak the peas overnight, it is still a good idea to start with the two minute boil, because you will have fewer hard skins and the brief boil will keep them from souring," she explained.

Season with one teaspoon salt for each cup of dry peas. Salt pork and bacon are old standbys for seasoning, but chopped ham or smoked turkey left over from the Christmas celebration are great also Pepper, garlic and oregano can be added in small amounts, onefourth teaspoon per pound of dry peas, to enhance the flavor.

In the slow cooker, soak the peas overnight, then cook them in water on high for two to two and one-half hours. Reduce control setting to low, add seasonings and meat and cook on low for eight to ten hours. If you prefer less watery peas, use less water.

Serve your peas with hot cornbread, butter and lots of fresh, crisp onions, the specialist suggested.

Hunter Safety Means Your Safety You must always be watchful dealing with firearms and hunting.

There are certain times when you must be doubly alert. Those times include: When you've had just enough experience to think you know all the answers. There can be carelessness in the field even if, you do know how to handle a gun safely. Are your reflexes fast enough to avoid an accident?

When you're carrying a gun over rough country or obstacles. Be especially careful handling guns around home, camp or near the car.

When you're plinking. It's fine to have fun and burn some ammo. But, beware the temptation to "horse around." Never allow yourself or your friends to cause a tragedy.

When you are tired. Toward the end of a long day's hunt, reflexes may become dulled and gun carrying relaxed. Watch for carelessness and try to avoid it.

When you first spot game. Boiling with excitement, it's easy to rush into a careless shot. This eagerness cannot be felt in a class or on the training range. It comes naturally when spotting game. Right away,

when, you first see a shot, double your caution. Be sure to carefully identify your target. ., When hunting buddies forget or ignore the safety rules. Tell them immediately. They may be close friends, but anyone careless with a gun is caTeless with your life. That's a deadly insult. If they can't improve, be friends someplace other than around firearms.

Ten Commandments 1) Treat every gun with the respect due a loaded gun.

2) Watch that muzzle! Be able to control the direction of the muzzle even if you should stumble.

3) Be sure the barrel and action are clear of obstructions and that you have only ammunition of the proper size for the gun you are carrying.

4) Be sure of your target before you pull the trigger; know identifying features of the game you hunt.

5) Unload guns when not in use.

Take down or have actions open; guns should be carried in cases to the shooting area.

6) Never point a gun at anything you do not want to shoot; avoid all horseplay with a firearm.

7) Never climb a fence or tree or jump a ditch with a loaded gun; never pull a gun toward you by the muzzle.

8) Never shoot a bullet at a flat, hard surface or water at target practice be sure your backstop is adequate.

9) Store guns and ammunition separately beyond the reach of children and careless adults.

10) Avoid alcoholic beverages and other drugs before and during shooting.

Central Texas Cow-Calf Clinic Is Jan. 9 College Station—This year's Cen tral Texas Cow-Calf Clinic will focus on key management practices that can mean more dollars in a beef cattle operation.

The clinic will be Jan. 9 in Georgetown at the Livestock Commission Co. Sale Barn, with registration from 8 to 9 a.m.

"The entire program is aimed at helping cattlemen through these tough economic times by providing them with information for making key management decisions," points out Dr. Larry Boleman, Livestock specialist with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, Texas A&M University System.

Practices that lead to an increased weaned calf crop and increased weaning weights and improving the market value of calves have the greatest impact on boosting income, notes Boleman.

Master of ceremonies for the clinic will be Dr. O.D. Butler, associate deputy chancellor for agriculture, Texas A&M University System.

A highlight of the clinic will be a discussion of the newly launched South Central Texas Beef Herd Improvement Program by Chester P. Fehlis, district Extension director.

The program is designed to increase overall efficiency and profitability from beef cattle production and is keyed to intensive result demonstrations based on producers' individual needs, says Boleman.

Overall beef cattle management and economic alternatives for cattlemen will be discussed by Dr. John Beverly, Extension animal reproduction specialist.

Discussions on weed and brush management and on forage management will be presented by Dr. Tommy Welch and Dr. George Alston, Extension range brush and wed control specialist and Extension agronomist, respectively.

The clinic also will feature discusions of various beef cattle management practices that can be incorporated into a herd management calendar plus a discussion on preparing cattle for market — steps to increase their value. Boleman will moderate the discussion, which will include actual demonstrations on cattle branding, castrating, dehorning and tipping, implanting, worming, controlling grubs, ear tagging and tattooing.

Cattlemen from throughout the Central Texas area are invited to attend the annual Cow-Calf Clinic, says Boleman, to get current information that can help them improve their economic situation.

College Station—Agricultural software (programs for computers) is not one of the hottest selling items these days, and folks in that business are wondering why.

It may be a case of not knowing what farmers, ranchers and agribusinesses need, or of knowing but not doing a good job of merchandising.

So those involved in developing and selling agricultural software will want to take special note of an Agricultural Software Developers and Vendors Conference, Jan. 24-25, at the Emerald Beach Holiday Inn in Corpus Christi. The conference will focus on opportunities available to agricultural microcomputer software developers, programmers and vendors.

"Merchandising of agricultural software is currently a big 'question mark', " says Dr. Forrest Stegelin, economist with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, Texas A&M University System. "In the past little has been done to improve the marketability of a software package."

Farmers, ranchers and agribusinesses have had some recent input regarding their needs and uses of microcomputers by virtue of a nationwide survey conducted by Stegelin and Dr. James Novak, an Extension economist at Corpus Christ. They will discuss survey results at the upcoming conference.

Dr. Robert Strain of the University of Florida will summarize software developed by and available from universities and the public sector.

Dr. Craig Dobbins of Purdue University will discuss what private software developers have done to make agricultural software available to producers and agribusinesses.

Another speaker, Dr. Al Tinsley of Clemson University, will point out voids and needs for software yet to be met for the agricultural industry.

Dr. David Bressler, Texas A&M

University, will conduct a session for programmers and developers on "Incorporating Risk for Realism" into microcomputer software.

The conference will also feature Gary Vincent, editor of "Farm Computer News" published by "Successful Farming" magazine.

Vincent will give his observations of the top 20 computer subscription or access services available to agribusinessmen and farmers.

A futuristic look at the agricultural software industry will be provided by Dr. Stephen Harsh of Michigan State University.

Two other Extension Service economists at Texas A&M, Dr. James McGrann and Dr. Richard Edwards, will round out the two-day conference.

McGrann will discuss opportunities for cooperative ventures between public and private sectors as they relate to universities and computerized agriculture, with particular reference to a "Computerized Farm 2000" project being launched in Texas.

Edwards will offer merchandising suggestions to help agricultural software vendors boost sales and profits.

The conference will also feature a host of exhibits and demonstrations and will provide participants an opportunity to view a sampling of microcomputer software and hardware currently available for agricultural producers and agribusinesses.

Serve Mincemeat Tarts This Holiday Season

Walnut-Carrot Party Salad

Celebrate the holiday season with a festive dessert.

These Mincemeat Tarts with Brandied Hard Sauce add a creative new touch to mincemeat pie. They are inexpensive, easy to prepare and require no last minute preparation, leaving you free to relax and entertain your guests.

The individual tarts are created by crimping pastry lined heavy duty aluminum foil circles, filling them with prepared mincemeat, and baking in a moderate oven.

To serve, place the tarts on doily lined serving ,plates and top with hard sauce. An aromatic cup of fresh ground coffee or an after dinner liqueur is always a pleasing accompaniment.

Mincemeat Party Tarts With Brandied 1-lard Sauce Pastry for 9-inch two-crust pie 1 jar (28 oz.) ready-to-use mincemeat or 1 package (9 oz.) condensed mincemeat, prepared 1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened 2 cups confectioners' sugar 1 tablespoon hot water 2 teaspoons brandy or rum extract 1 teaspoon vanilla Make 10 heavy duty aluminum foil Tart Shells*. Do not prick. Place tart shells

on cookie sheet; fill each with 3 tablespoons mincemeat. Bake in 350°F. oven 40 to 45 minutes, To make Brandied Hard Sauce, cream butter and sugar together until smooth. Stir in water, brandy or rum extract and vanilla. Chill. To serve, top each tart with a dollop of sauce.

Makes: Ten 2-1/2-inch tarts.

*To make heavy duty aluminum foil Tart Shells, cut ten 4-1/2-inch circles of Heavy Duty Reynolds Wrap, using a saucer as a guide. Cut matching circles of pastry rolled 1/8-inch thick. Place pastry circles on top of foil circles.

With thumb and forefinger, turn up edges of both foil and pastry 1-inch all around; pinch together at intervals to hold edge up.

1 6-ounce package

cup sliced pimientolemon flavor gelatin stuffed green olives 3-1/2 cups hot water cups chopped toasted 3 tablespoons lemon Diamond Walnuts juice 3-ounce packages 1/4 teaspoon salt cream cheese, 2 cups grated carrots softened Dissolve gelatin in hot water; stir in lemon juice and salt.

Chill until mixture thickens slightly. Fold in carrots, olives and walnuts; halfway fill a 6 1/2-cup mold and set mold in a bowl of ice water. Beat cream cheese well and gradually blend in remaining gelatin mixture. Spoon over the clear layer to fill mold. Chill for several hours or overnight before unmolding.

Turkey Crepes Mole—Leftovers Ole!

With the holidays fast approaching, the time has come to get out those treasured silver gifts and heirlooms, representing happy memories from generations past, and to get them looking their best.

Our attraction to silver lies not only in its value and scarcity — its beauty is the foremost reason for its desirability. This beauty is accented by memories of those same silver pieces on holiday tables of our parents and grandparents.

Silver, old or new, appreciates being looked after. If polished and cared for properly, antique silver should have a bluish cast — a "patina" developed through years of loving care. The effect is highly prized for the warmth that it gives to the object.

New silver is whiter, but over years of use and care will develop the same rich beauty.

Silver's sole disadvantage is the fact that it will tarnish, either gradually or rapidly, because of impurities in the air or through contact with certain foods.

Tarnishing is usually the result of the silver reacting with sulphur, either in the air or in food, forming sulphur sulfide, which develops into a dark film unless removed.

Although the silversmith's art has flourished since the 1400's, silver care, at least up until the past few genera

tions, was a messy and timeconsuming job, involving the use of mercury-based cleaning compounds that removed a layer of silver with the tarnish.

Modern silver care products, however, have made the job easier, more gentle for the silver, and give better results and protection. These products include detarnishers, cleaner/polishes, and polishes which offer long-term protection from tarnish.

A few simple steps will also prevent "staining" (really only fast-acting tarnish) often seen on silver. For instance, salt, vinegar, lemon juice and eggs should never be allowed to sit on silver for any length of time. Their sulphur content causes rapid tarnishing, or "staining."

Silver items should not be stored or wrapped in printed paper (contains sulphur) and should be kept away from coal, gas or wood-burning appliances, since all produce sulphur gasses. A rubber band, if used to wrap silver, can cause tarnish even through several layers of cloth.

Proper attention and care, then, can assure that your cherished silver pieces will be attractive when they are passed on to the next generations.

And, on the subject of practicality, note that you can make Turkey Crepes Mole ahead. Just fix the crepes and filling the day before, refrigerate, then assemble and bake right before you serve.

Turkey Crepes Mole

Crepes:

1 cup milk 2/3 cup all-purpose flour 2 eggs 1/3 cup enriched corn meal 1/8 teaspoon salt

Filling:

2 cups chopped cooked turkey or chicken 2 tablespoons vegetable oil One 16-oz. can whole tomatoes, drained One 10-3/4-oz. can condensed chicken broth 1/2 cup chopped onion One 4-oz. can green chilies, drained 4 teaspoons unsweetened cocoa 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon Dairy sour cream

For crepes: Combine all ingredients; beat until smooth.

For each crepe, pour about 2 tablespoons batter into hot, lightly greased crepe pan or small skillet. Immediately tilt pan to coat bottom evenly with thin layer of batter. Cook 45 seconds or until top looks dry ; turn.

Cook about 20 seconds. Stack crepes between sheets of wax paper. * For filling: In large skillet, cook and stir turkey in oil until golderihamown. In blender or food processor, combine remaining ingredients. Blend just until nearly smooth. Pour over turkey; simmer 25 to 30

minutes, stirring occasionally.

(Filling will be thin consistency at this point.)

To assemble crepes: In baking dish, spoon 1/3 cup filling down center of one crepe. Roll up; place seam side down in ungreased 13x9-inch baking pan. Repeat with remaining crepes. Cover with aluminum foil; bake 20 to 25 minutes. Serve with sour cream. Makes 12 crepes. *Note: Crepes and filling

may be made one day in advance and stored in refrigerator. Proceed as recipe directs, baking for 25 minutes or until heated through.
