It is that time of the year when you think of the members who are special to you.

For us, there are countless special individuals. And we would like to salute each of you.

So I am departing from the usual weekly, editorial format this time to say "Thank You." To the SPJST members who have been our backbone before many of us were born.

To the members who took time to extend appreciation for their past deadline letters and/or reports.

To those of you who scold us for things that somtimes happen behind the scenes.

To members who enjoy reading the Vestnik.

To those who don't.

To the members who never have missed a bill payment and always pay on time.

To the members who praised the new Vestnik format for a job well done.

To the silent majority of our members who may appreciate our service, even when they think it is not perfect.

BEST WISHES FOR A JOYOUS HOLIDAY SEASON! ***

The spirit of Christmas is composed of so many things. Despite the commercialization of the season, we can still experience the true meaning of Christmas all around us.

It is receiving .a greeting from someone thousands of miles away ... just a card, but a warm reminder

that friendship is one of the most precious gifts of all.

It is young voices raised in song at a convalescent home for the aged ... with those wrinkled smiles and moist eyes conveying more than words ever could, how appreciative the listeners are.

It is baskets of food and toys for the less fortunate of the community, lovingly put together by those eager to share of their abundance.

It is the newspaper boy's delight when an appreciative patron includes a holiday tip for faithful service through the past year.

It is being surprised by a neighbor with a batch of her homemade goodies.

It is the hours spent looking for that special gift for someone on your list — not an expensive gift, but just what he or she has always wanted.

It is receiving a handmade sweater or scarf, reflecting the hours of love and time spent in its creation.

It is the face of a child, listening wide-eyed to Mom or Dad reading a favorite Christmas story.

It is the gratitude in a shut-in's eyes, when visitors come to call during the holiday season.

It is the cheery "Merry Christmas!" called out by the busy service station attendant or grocery clerk.

It is the spectacular display of lights on homes on the block, placed for neighbors and passers-by to enjoy.

Christmas is sharing ... caring ... giving. It is, simply, the spirit of love. ***

Some people have a year-round Christmas. There are five towns or villages in the USA that are named "Christmas." They are located in Arizona, Florida, Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee.

There is also a Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean, south of Java, Singapore the to attached settlement, under Australian administration, and the British have two Christmas Islands: one of the Line Islands in the center of the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii and another in Nova Scotia on the Atlantic Ocean.

The United States "Christmas" towns are apparently swamped with Christmas mail because many people want a Christmas postmark on their cards, letters, and packages and each year, several million pieces of mail are sent to post offices in those places named "Christmas."

In Christmas, Florida, population approximately over 300, handles an average of half-million pieces of mail during the rushed holiday season.

Christmas located near Orlando, Florida, began as a fort that was completed Christmas Day in 1835, one hundred and forty-eight years ago.

SUPREME LODGE

From The President's Office Our Christmas And New Year's Message The Supreme Lodge's traditional Christmas and New Year's greeting appears again on the front page of this issue. This is a long-standing tradition. As has been the case in recent years, we are omitting the practice of sending out greetings from every department in the Home Office to lodge officers and persons in their respective administrative areas. We have sent Christmas greetings to individual lodges.

These were sent within the last couple of weeks, but perhaps not in time for some of the lodge meetings.

We hope those lodges will accept our greeting on this week's cover in that spirit.

The President's Annual New Year's Message and Report will be in the Vestnik issue of January 4th, 1984.

From the Vice President's Office Thanks Texas Czechs This past week (December 8-11) Pavel Pechacek who is a radio broadcaster for - the Voice of America in Washington D.C. visited the Temple-Dallas-Houston areas.

Pavel was actually given an assignment, by VOA, in Houston to cover the 50th Anniversary of Bishop Morkovsky's ordination, but his impressions of Temple were still in his mind from the Czech Symposium held here in 1978. He called me from Washington and asked that Calvin Chervenka and I put together a group of interesting Czech people so he might interview them for broadcast over Voice of America. What he wanted was human interest stories.

The response Calvin and I received from the Czech communities of the Temple-Dallas area was simply great. The SPJST Lodge 47 Seaton Choral Club scheduled a special songfest so they could be recorded.

Two families who recently moved to this area from Czechoslovakia were interviewed as was Alfred Vrazel who spoke about farming and music in Texas.

At the SPJST Home Office, Pavel was amazed at the amount of artifacts that had been accumulated.

Otto Hanus gave him a very extensive tour of the museum, archives and library. Pechacek praised Hanus for his displays.

In Mildred and Calvin Chervenka insured that Pavel got to see "Big D" and was intrbduced to many Czech folks in that area. He also visited SPJST Lodge 130 in Dallas and Sid Pokladnik's meat market where he received a tour and some sample sausages.

While in Temple, Mr. Pechacek was scheduled for two media interviews. One was a fifteen minute talk show on Stations KTEM and KPLE and he was interviewed by Mary Ann Slaughter of the Temple Telegram. In both interviews, Pechacek was very complimentary of the Czech communities of Texas.

To those of you who helped make this event such a success, I want to publicly thank you. You made our State and especially our Society a showcase. Thanks!

Texas Department of Human Resources Commissioner Marlin W. Johnston Mrs. Thelma Hrncir Supreme Lodge, SPJST P.O. Box 100 Temple, Texas 76503 Dear Thelma: I wanted to give you an update on what is happening in Ennis with the TDHR-SPJST child welfare project.

We are overwhelmed by the donations we have received, from SPJST Lodge No. 135. Adell Valek and Evelyn Novotny spearheaded two projects that resulted in a donation of over $1,300. The lodge held three stew suppers preceding their Friday night bingo. They also held a prize chance sale to benefit abused and neglected children. Mrs. Valek and Mrs. Novotny contacted local merchants and businesses who donated a total of 12 gifts to be sold.

They had the tickets printed and then sold them.

I very much enjoyed working with these two ladies and other members of the lodge. The $1,300 donation is the largest donation we have ever received from any one group.

Lodge No. 25 is also working on the project. November 12, 1983, they held a garage sale at the lodge, and I believe they have other activties planned.

I wanted to let you know these things because I don't think the lodges are giving themselves credit in the Vestnik — and I feel they deserve some recognition. We have also had publicity in the newspaper.

If you have any questions, please let me know. We feel that the SPJST-DHR teamwork has been very successful in Ennis.

Merry Christmas District VII Dear Brothers and Sisters; 'Tis the season to be Jolly! and I am going to use this means of wishing all of you Christmas Joy and a Happy New Year.

It is in my mind the best of all seasons for more reasons than one might mention in this Christmas note to all of you. One reason is quite evident and that is; "How many times do you hear I can't do this or that from the children," Well, some, but it is interesting to note that even the adults respond with a "I will or I can." It started as early as our District Fall meeting, hosted by Lodge 133 in San Antonio, Texas.

What the meeting could have been with a few more in attendance was only surpassed by the spirit of "I will or I can" mentioned above. I assure you, it was .a complete success with the fun and games that, even the adults joining in, made it a memorable event.

As president of District VII, I can say, without reservation, that all of you are the best of Fraternalists one could ever expect to serve. I will be asking you to join me in some endeavors for next year very soon.

From Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje News

Dear Vestnik Readers and Friends, The annual Christmas party and monthly meeting of El Campo-Hillje Lodge 4.0 was held Sunday, December 11th. It began with a happy hour and a gathering of members, friends and families.

Music was by the Happy Home Boys — Al Kutac, Frankie Vanek, Ed Hrncir, Cap Kovar and Mark Sablatura. It was wonderful waltz and polka music, with many of the old Czech songs. Thanks boys!

The youth club exchanged presents and Santa Claus made an early appearance from the North Pole to talk to the youngsters. It was good to see Santa again and the children promised to be good.

President James Kulcak said a thanks to all the volunteers who have been helping on bingo night..

Without your help it would be impossible to have the bingo games.

Also thanks to his "left hand man" Brother Benny Reck who is in charge of the hall. To his "right hand man" — Sister Rita Vanek, who he couldn't keep things straight without. To Secretary, Linda Rubesh for all her help. To Treasurer, Leona Macha and her "tight fist. To Financial Secretary, Bill Goerig who is in charge of some very heavy books. To Youth Leader, Margie Kulcak for all the time and energy put in with the youth club.

(Margie also works the kitchen every Bingo night while James mans the mike at the games). Thanks to the trustees, Albert Kresta, Sr., Frankie Vanek, and Al Kutac for their support. Thanks also to Allen Naiser for letting James off from work with pay for three days so he could get the Bingo license red tape straightened out. Though James

jokes and kids he really means his thanks sincerely.

Then a special welcome to SPJST President, Nick Morris who came all the way from Temple for the installation of officers and the 50 year ceremony.

The meeting began with a pledge of allegiance.

Applications for membership were voted on and the newest members are Marilyn Adamicek, Cynthia Adamcik and Elizabeth Adamcik. Welcome new members.

This was a special meeting as we were honored to have Sister Augustina Hubenak with us. Sister Hubenak was honored with a 50 year pin which she was due to receive last March. She was attended by her family, Mr. and Mrs. J. V. Hubenak.

Brother Nick Morris presided at the installation of officers. The new officers are President — James Kulcak, First Vice President — Benny Reck; Second Vice President — Rita Vanak, Financial Secretary — Bill Goerig, Treasurer — Leona Macha, Secretary — Laverne Bacak, Youth Leader — Viasta Bartosh and Trustees — Albert Kresta Sr., Frankie Vanek, and Al Kutac. Brother Morris congratulated us for having the largest lodge in District VI. He did say he would like to see some of our members who speak the Czech language to teach the language to others who would like to learn.

Sounds like a good project for the future. He then congratulated all the new officers and trustees and wished them a successful year.

President Kulcak then told about the progress being made for the addition of the storage-room. Many of the members felt it would be better to make the addition to the building larger now rather than in the future. Financing is available through the Mother Lodge and the matter is being looked into. Though it looks like a lot of money to be spending, it is for a good cause. Our little Hillje hall is back on the map and the improvements need to be done now!

Our other special guests were Mr. and Mrs. Matt Vanek of Victoria. We were pleased to welcome them to our Christmas celebration. Brother Vanek provided the bracelet and tie clasp for our oldest members. Our oldest lady was Bessie Bacak, age 81 and our oldest "man member was Jerry Polasek, age 80. Both members were looking great and we all wish to congratulate them.

A big, super, special thanks goes to Edwin Steinocher. Thanks for making a bunch of kids happy!

The Christmas dinner was a huge success. Catered by Staff's Catering the turkey, dressing and trimmings were delicious. Thanks also to the members' who provided desserts, vegetables and salads to compliment the dinner. We consider the dinner a success as over 200 members and guests were served.

It was a pleasant evening with good food, good friends and good music. It was also wonderful to see the members pitch in at the end and cleanup the hall. You are to be. congratulated.

Thanks to Sister Rita and Brother Frankie Vanek for organizing the dinner and doing a lot of running.

Lodge 25 Donated To Charity Ennis

Lodge 25 held their regular monthly meeting Thursday, December 8, 1983 at 8 p.m. President Raymond Zapletal called the meeting to order.

The attendance book was passed around for signatures.

Sergeant-at-Arms Garry D. Mizell led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Reported on the sick list were Sister Jane Dixon, Brother Joe Novak and Bro . Wesley Trojacek.

Minutes of November 10th regular monthly meeting were read

by Recording Secretary Kay Lynn Kovar, and approved as read.

Sister Pat Zapletal reported on the November 12th garage sale. Our lodge earned $150, which will be donated toward the "Child Abuse Program" along with clothing remaining from garage sale and canned goods donated by members at the Christmas Party.

Youth Leader Adell Rejcek presented a youth club report. The youth did a wonderful job decorating the hall for Christmas. The next youth club meeting will be Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. December 13th, 1983.

Mr. and Mrs. SPJST for 1983 are: Mr. and Mrs. Frank Gurecky.

The following outgoing 1983 officers were presented plaques: 1st Vice President-Winnie Whitfill, 2nd Vice President-Bob Trojacek, Treasurer-Joe Trojacek, Youth Leader-Adell Rejcek.

1st Vice President installed the officers for 1984; - namely, President-Raymond Zapletal, Vice President-Bob Trojacek, TreasurerEmma Trojacek, Recording Secretary-Kay Lynn Kovar, Financial Secretary-Margaret Kra.jca, Youth Leader-Linda Trojacek.

New members are: Derek Joshua McBride, Kathleen Dianne Pouzar and Laure Ann Krajica.

The meeting closed with 32 members present.

Lodge 80, Holland Donated To Charities The annual lodge meeting of our lodge was held Sunday, December 4, 1983.

The meeting was called to order

by President Bohac at 2 p.m., with all officers being present.

All members present recited the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag and were asked to remain standing for a few moments in respect to our deceased members.

Minutes of the November meeting were read by Secretary Latham and after a minor correction, they were approved.

For correspondence a thank you card from the Holland High School for the use of the hall and a nice Christmas card from the Supreme Lodge were acknowledged.

President Bohac thanked everyone for what they are doing for the lodge.

Secretary Latham read a list of donations that our lodge gave to the following: To the Senior Citizens of Holland-$256.80, To the Bell County Child Welfare Board-$25.00, To the Arts/Crafts Fair of SS Cyril & Methodius Catholic School of Granger-$75.00.

All the other chairmen of the various departments also gave good reports for the month of November.

The night of December 22nd, our regular bingo night, the Bingo Committee stated they will give away 15 turkeys. All those who buy bingo cards will get a ticket for the turkey drawing, so come out you may get a free turkey for Christmas.

The next order of business was the election of officers for the year 1984. All the present officers were re-elected. They are: President - D. I. Bohac, Vice President — Terry Bertrand, Financial Secretary — Glenda Liles, Secretary-Treasurer — Glen Latham and Joe Barabas, Jr., reporter.

Delegates to the State Convention are: Glenda Liles, D. I. Bohac, Glen Latham, Frankie Pajestka, Jr., and Joe Barabas, Jr., alternate.

Door prize winners were Jim Kopecky, Terry Bertrand, Louise Ivicic and Jo Ann Benner.

The meeting adjourned at 3:30 p.m. to meet again January 8 at 2 p.m.

Lodge 74 has the Christmas spirit with all the lovely Christmas decorations. The youth club and leaders once again did an outstanding job of decorating the lodge hall.

The youth club float won third place in the Christmas Parade held in Crockett.

New but old officers were reelected for 1984 at our lodge meeting Monday night. We were glad to see Hughie Lodge Smith up and about even though he is still on crutches. Hughie had an accident; a power saw cut his foot and he spent several days in the hospital.

The newly-elected officers for 1984 were installed by Sister Vlasta Nowotny.

Pledge of Allegiance to our flag was led by Willie Mae Kuykendal and we remained standing in silence as a tribute to our deceased Sister Vlasta Rose. May she rest in peace.

President Charlie Matcek wished everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and asked for the roll call of officers. All officers were present.

Minutes were read by Secretary Mary Werner and were accepted after a minor correction. She also read a thank you card from the Paul Wenzel family for the memorial and a holiday greeting from District V Director Louis Hanus.

Financial Secretary Jo Ann Morgan gave her report. Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendal gave her financial statement. Gilbert Walzel, our Special Fund treasurer, gave a very good report. All of these reports were accepted as given.

We were sorry to hear that Brother Stanley Slacalek is still in the hospital. Everyone present signed a get-well card for him. Home from the hospital are Brother Charlie Horelica and Tina Fojtik; they are reported doing better. Mildred Vecera is reported to be in Memorial Hospital. We wish all of you a speedy recovery.

President Charlie Matcek asked everyone present to come forward to the beautifully-decorated Christmas tree as Willie Mae Kuykendal led us in singing a few carols. Santa appeared at the close of the singing of Jingle Bells and handed out bags of goodies to all present and wished everyone a Merry Christmas.

Gifts for residents at S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II were wrapped December 12 at the Gilbert Walzel home and will be distributed December 23rd by the Committee; namely, Benita Walzel, Vlasta Nowotny and Lillie Teykl.

Thanks again to Sister Matcek for decorating the Christmas tree and to Willie Mae for baking the turkey and dressing.

Sunday, December 11th, beginning at 10:00 a.m., the members met for the December monthly meeting and heard reports of the various officers and committees activities for the month of November. These reports were brief in anticipation of the annual meeting. At approximately 11:10 a.m. the annual meeting was convened by President Larry Pflughaupt.

After dispensing with the reading of the minutes of the previous annual meeting, Brother Harry Rice presented the suggested Rules & Regulations changes, all of which were approved. The one change

After considerable deliberations, remunerations were granted to the president and treasurer for 1983 services, and salary was set for the financial secretary for 1984.

Immediately after lunch, a beautiful memorial service was conducted in memory of the 61 deceased members since the last annual meeting.

Officers and committee chairmen reported on their activities during the year.

Balloting for the 71 delegate positions was held so the counting of the ballots could begin. Upon completion by the Balloting Committee of the delegate vote, the names of the 71 delegates and 10 alternates were announced. The first meeting of these delegates is set for January 10th at 7:30 p.m.

Annual Meeting of Lodge 88, Houston At 10 a.m. Sunday, December 11th, President Larry Pflughaupt opened the December monthly meeting with 185 members present.

Monthly reports were given by the officers and committees for the past month and, at the close of the monthly meeting, "Happy Birthday" song rang out to all the December birthday members.

Wedding anniversaries were acknowledged as follows: H. J. Jarisch and Emma Jarisch celebrated their 54th, H. C. and Gazela Huber (53 years): Tim and Rosalee Kostom (16 years), Victor and Evelyn Janak (33 years), Pappy and Marie Spaulding (51 years), and Dean and Fay Evetts (42 years).

Dear Members: The festivities of the holiday season are really, keeping us all busy, and Lodge Jaro No. 130 is no exception. December 11, after the lodge meeting, a delightful Christmas Party was held. Gifts were exchanged and a delicious dinner was served consisting of smoked turkey, ham and all the trimmings; later Jake Kans played his accordion for our listening and dancing pleasure.

Lodge 142, Houston Annual Meeting Results Our annual meeting was called to order by President Mary Ann Kieschnick, Sunday, December 4, 1983 at 1 p.m.

We had 65 members and visitors who stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag and remained standing for a few moments of silence in memory of our departed Brother Joe Cieslewitz.

Roll call of officers and all officers' reports were read.

We were sorry to report sick members, Butch Stein, Michael Tumis, Frank Tumis, July Kazmir and Velma Alexander.

Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting yesterday was called to order by our president, Brother Jerry Milan.

Oliver Shannon and for a longtime good friend to everyone, Brother John Murphy of Lodge 92. He will be missed. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to their families. May they rest in eternal peace.

Sister Carolyn Cleveland reported that the youth club made a $25 donation to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1 in Taylor, and $25 to the Child Abuse Program. Our lodge donated $150 to the Child Abuse.

Sister Pavey reported on the Metroplex Lodges' Christmas Party hosted by Lodge 180. We had a delicious dinner and the hospitality was enjoyed by all present. It is sad that more members don't attend.

You missed a good time. Lodge 154 will be the host Sunday, December 2, 1984. We hope we can have a good turnout. Thank you Lodge 180, you were gracious hosts.

We extend our congratulations to some of our young members; Patti Williams who was elected to Who's Who in American High Schools. She is Senior Class President of Castleberry High School, Editor of the school yearbook, Varsity Cheerleader, plays volleyball for Sokol Fort Worth and Castleberry's girls' volleyball team which was a state semi-finalist in November.

Patti is our member and the daughter of Brother Darrell and Sister Gaye Williams. Kirk Stoeppelman made All Tournament Basketball Team of Boswell and Azle High Schools. Kirk is the son of Brother Johnnie and Sister Mary Jean Stoeppelman. We are proud of you! Also to the Sokol Fort Worth Volleyball Teams that won 3 trophies in the Southern District Tournament.

Sister Mary Hale returned home safely after a nice visit with her daughter and husband, Sister Mary Katherine and Harold Garrison in Creve Cover, Illinois and her grandson, Brother George Hallford, his wife, Patti, and 2 sons of Peoria, Illinois. She was snowed in for a couple of days.

Brother Don Steinman and Brother Roy Alholm also arrived home safely last Thursday. Brother Don left Roy with his son, Tony and family in Glen Ellen, Illinois and he went on to Lebanon, Ohio to visit his mother, sister, brother and family.

He drove through some blizzard weather and came home to beautiful sunshine.

Sister Maria Prill sends her best wishes to everyone from Germany.

Sister Eva Dockery will be leaving December 22nd to join her mother and be home after New Year. We pray, for them, a safe return home.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Jerry Milan, Anne Johnson and Patti Gage.

We also extend our sympathy to C. L. and Patti Gage on the loss of his grandfather, Joseph Gage, in Wichita Falls at the age of 101 years.

The meeting adjourned to a lot of goodies and watched the Cowboys lose.

Czech Club of Lodge 172, Pasadena Forty-five people gathered at Lodge 172 in Pasadena, Texas December 4, 1983 for a Czech Club Social.

The blessing was given by Steve Kotal as the group lined up for a covered dish dinner. Food was

terrific and the members exchanged brief family histories during the meal.

A short business meeting was conducted by the officers; namely, Raymond Skrabanek, president; Mrs. Bobby Michalsky, the North San Jacinto College vice president; and Victor Peter, vice president of Central Campus of San Jacinto College; Barbara Moseley, the club's secretary; and Steve Kotal, treasurer.

The meeting centered around increasing the Czech language instruction by Instructors Bernard Orsak at the San Jacinto College, Mrs. Bobby Michalsky at the C. E. King School or in Crosby and Bernard Pivonka for Rosenberg.

Interest was aimed at securing some Czech films for the next social of the Czech Club. Mrs. Lillian Pivonka inherited the job of arranging for the films.

A sing-a-long followed with Bernard Orsak, Victor Peter, Bernard Pivonka, and Julius Zella leading the exchange of different Czech songs.

Officers, with spouses from Lodge 172, who attended the Czech Club Social were the J. Dresslers, J. Machanns and J. Zellas.

179, Warrenton Meeting Lodge

Dear Members and Readers: A fine group of members and guests gathered in Round Top Rifle Association Hall Saturday evening, December 10 for a joyous Christmas Party and delicious meal consisting of smoked turkey, dressing and a great variety of side dishes and delicious desserts.

The merry-making began with a happy hour. Soon Santa arrived with bags of goodies for the children, which created a jolly Christmas spirit.

There was not a business session, but there were a few items that were disposed of. The president appointed a Serving Committee for January, February and March; namely, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Albers, Mr. and Mrs. Delephine Bergmann, Harold Bergmann and Garda Siptak.

President Bergmann thanked all who brought food, prepared the turkey and dressing, brought the yuletide tree and decorated it, served the meal and cleaned up, plus anyone who helped in any way to have made this a happy event.

Soon after the delectable meal, gift exchange was enjoyed.

The remainder of the evening was spent in playing games or just good old fellowship.

President Bergmann wished all a very Merry Christmas and Prosperous New Year.

Our next regular lodge meeting will be January 12 at 7 p.m. again in the Warrenton Store Guest Room.

The lodge will furnish turkey and members are asked to bring a side dish or dessert.

Late News From Lodge 180, Burleson The meeting was called to order

by Vice President Joe Hurtik, with six officers present.

Minutes from the previous meeting were approved as read by Secretary Frances Simmank.

We held a benefit dance for the Child Abuse Program in November with all the money going to this program, to be divided between Johnson and Tarrant Counties. We want to thank the bands (Wayne Martin, Country Junction, Ramblin' Rhythm, and Rhythm Reunion) for being so kind to donate their time for such a worthy cause. Thanks also to the members who donated their time. It was all appreciated.

The Christmas dinner was held at Lodge 180 December 4th for Lodges 92, 154, 180 and 183, with music by the Rejcek Band providing 3-hour dancing period for those who were in the mood; everyone seemed to have a very nice time with all they wanted to eat and old friends to sit with and catch up on all the news.

We want to welcome Gene Conway Wheat as a new member; come on out, Gene, and get acquainted with everyone.

The next meeting was planned for December 20th. This meeting was scheduled for election of officers, with everyone casting votes for their favorite candidate.

Door prize was won by Estelle Hurtik. The meeting adjourned at 8:45 p.m.

Mid-Cities Lodge 183 Year-End Events Dear Members: The joint Christmas Party is now history, and it was a great party with Lodge 180 serving a very delicious meal. There were 18 members from Lodge 183 present and they want to thank all of you members from Lodge 180 for all the hard work you put into making it a great success. The Rejcek Polka Band played for the dancing pleasure after the meal and everyone enjoyed themselves. If you missed this one, you missed a great time and you will have to wait until next year for another party like it; it will be at Lodge 154, Fort Worth.

Lodge 183 is still having its problems getting the new building ready but here is something to think about: difficulties need not be disastrous; defeats need not be fatal; failures need not be final. I hope all of you who asked about the building don't give up; everything is being done that can be done; it will be a great lodge when it is finished.

187, Round Rock Held Elections Lodge

Dear Members: The November general meeting of Lodge 187 was opened by President Oman who also led us in the pledge.

Minutes of the last meeting were read and approved.

The minutes of the board meeting were read and a recommendation from the board to go ahead with laying floor tile in the kitchen and bar areas was brought to the general membership; also this has been discussed in our October meeting, membership voted to go ahead.

Discussion regarding attendance at meetings was brought forward.

After several suggestions, it was decided by vote to change the time of our meetings to 6 p.m. on the 4th Sunday of the month effective with our January meeting. Everyone agreed that moving the time would enable everyone to spend more time with their families Sunday afternoons. Please make a note of this change on your calendars starting in January.

Notice

Alief Independent School District is offering Czech I (Beginning Czech or continuation of previous course in Fall, pending on the enrollment) at its community evening school in January (Spring Semester 1984).

Czech lessons will be taught for 14 weeks from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday nights starting Jan. 10, 1984. John J. Karas will be the instructor of this course. Tuition, set by the school district, will be $50. This course will develop basic Czech grammar with simple vocabulary for practical use wherever Czech is spoken.

The knowledge of the other languages is a well-known advantage in the public or private life. The studies & knowledge of Czech would make it easier to study other Slavic languages. The study of Czech language is also important for the perpetuation of our national heritage because through these studies and obtained knowledge every Czech-American student becomes more aware of his or her ethnic origin.

Please inform your relatives, friends and acquaintances about this Czech lanuage course starting January 10, 1984 in Alief.

YOUTH SECTION John Murphy, 68, passed away in a Ft. Worth hospital on Sunday, December 11th, after a brief confinement. Funeral services were held from Shannon Funeral Home in Ft. Worth on Tuesday, December 13th, with District Director Sid Pokladnik representing the SPJST and Ft. Worth Fire Department Chaplain Ed Stauffer. Interment was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Ft. Worth. Bro. Murphy was a member of Lodge 92, Ft. Worth and had served his lodge for many years as treasurer and more recently as reporter. He was also currently serving as chairman of the SPJST By-Law Committee. He was affiliated with the SVPS and served as secretary of the Ft. Worth Chapter. Bro. Murphy was a retired Ft. Worth Fire Department Captain after having served in that capacity for 36 years. He was also a Mason.

Voice of America At Seaton Star Hall The Voice of America is the official radio station of the United States, beaming truth in 42 languages to all parts of the world.

Pavel Pechacek, the Czech broad caster for the Voice of America, visited with the Seaton Choral Club and other Czech friends and neighbors in an informal gathering at Seaton Star Hall December 8. He taped the songs and interviews of the participants to be broadcast to Czechoslovakia, where the citizens are intrigued by the continuation of Czech traditions, songs and language by third and fourth generation;descendants of Czech emigrants.

STATEWIDE YOUTH LEADERS' RETREAT The Statewide Youth Leaders' Retreat in 1984 will be held Saturday and Sunday, March 24th and 25th, the retreat starting at 9 a.m.

Saturday and being over after the noon meal Sunday. The site of the retreat is Camp Lone Star, a few miles southeast of LaGrange. All DYCs, Assistant DYCs, Youth Leaders and Assistants, plus anyone else directly involved in our youth program are welcome to attend.

Accomodations are limited, so that the final selections will have to be based on a need-to-know and eventual-use basis, as well as a firstcome-first-served basis, with a deadline of March 5, 1984. Please wait for the official form in the Vestnik.

A full day and a half s activities are being planned, including some evening functions. More details in the coming weeks.

Emphasis has been laid on heavy industry and also on engineering and chemical production since 1948. The post-war years changed the formerly agrarian Slovakia to a highly industrialized country with a good standard of living.

Czechoslovakia is far from being self-sufficient in raw materials. For nearly all of its oil, 80 per cent of its iron ore, 50 per cent of its cotton and 70 per cent of its non-ferrous metals, it depends on Russia. International

8/VESTMK—Wednesday, December 21, 1983 economic relations are based on trade and cooperation with the Soviet Union and other members of the Council of Mutual Economic Assistance (Comecon) orgnized in 1949. Czechoslovakia is also actively seeking further expansion of trade and economic cooperation with the West, especially with Western Europe.

INDUSTRY Inspection of the Czechoslovak economy would show industry as the dominant factor, employing some 34 per cent of all workers and accounting for nearly 65 per cent of national income.

Czechoslovakia is comparatively rich in one raw material, coal. There is abundant brown (lignite) and black coal, particularly coal of the cooking variety. Coal mining grew very quickly and coal became the major source of power after World War II. In recent years, however, this situation was beginning to change as an ever-growing amount of oil was imported. Coal output meanwhile has been stabilized, with Czechoslovakia's share in world production standing about 3 per cent. Production of oil and natural gas is negligible. Since the mining deposits are considerable, prospects for the future are good for using uranium as a source of power.

Czechoslovakia is poor in metal ores. Iron ore is found in large quantities, but its metal content is small. On the other hand, Czechoslovakia is rather rich in non metallic minerals-glass sand, kaolin, ceramic clays, and magnesite. They are of very good quality and have helped make Moser crystal and Jablonec costume jewelry famous throughout the world.

The basic products of the Czechoslovak industry are pig iron and steel. Czechoslovakia's share of world steel production is 1.9 per cent-excellent for a nation that has just 0.43 per cent of the world's population. Also, produced, though not on a large scale, are aluminum and aluminum products and semifinished products from other nonferrous metals.

EXPORTS Czechoslovak equipment and products are shipped to many countries. Some of the major trademarks are Skoda, Javva, Pilsner Urquell, and Bohemian Moser, 'Bijoux de Boheme, and Poldi Antiorro. Many are famous throughout the world.

Czechoslovakia ranks 12th among all nations in industrial production.

Czechoslovak foreign trade is therefore extensive. The country holds a 1.5 per cent share of total world exports. Czechoslovakia ranks 15th in the world.

SOCIALISTS OWNERSHIP Since 1948 Czechoslovakia has had an economic system in which the means of production are socialized that is, no individual, or group individuals may own them. The entire economy is determined by over-all planning by governmentsponsored agencies.

AGRICULTURE Czechoslovakia has a heavy dependence on imports because it is too small to provide for all of its food needs. It does use as much as possible of its arable land. It uses it so much that it stands among the

leading countries of the world in percentage of area used • for agriculture. More than 70 per cent of the nation's land is in use.

Czechoslovakia produces maize, sugar beets, potatoes, fodder, and - a particular treasure - hops.

Czechoslovakia beer, "pivo" in the Czech language, is rated the best in the world. The wines of Slovakia and southern Moravia are not as prominent as Czech beer but they have a wide range of types.

Rapidly growing is the importance of livestock, but it still lags behind the level in other advanced countries. Only in hog-raising does the livestock production compare well with other nations. There is also a poultry industry, and beekeeping and fish-breeding are likewise coming in for added attention.

TOURISM Many tourists visit Czechoslovakia. What attracts the foreign tourists most are its historical monuments, especially in Prague and other ancient cities, the beautiful landscape, old castles, museums, famous Czechoslovak spas, cultural, social, and sports events, hunting, winter sports facilities and many other things.

Our Christmas Party was held December 18th.

Tickets were sold on a popcorn popper and other items.

We planned to present our Christmas Program December 20th at the rest home.

Birthday celebrants for this month are: Kevin Mach, Raymond Joe Hromadka and Becky Mynar. Keith Hykel will bring the cake for next month's meeting.

YC NEWS Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club held their monthly meeting December 4th at 2:30 p.m., in the Taiton Community Center.

President Vicki Dorotik brought the meeting to order. Marcy Dorotik led the pledge and Jennifer Dluhos said the prayer.

For the contest in ages 6 through 9, the youngsters were asked to make a Christmas tree. The winners were: 1st-Craig Dorotik, 2nd-Valerie Roye, 3rd-Stephanie Roye. In the 1012 division they were asked to make an angel. The winners were: 1st-

Landis Dornak, 2nd-Marcy Dorotik.

In the 13-17 category, they were asked to make a Santa Claus. The winners were: 1st-Michelle Srubar, 2nd-Janna Dornak, 3rd-Jean Dorotik.

We discussed our Christmas Party for December 12th at 5 p.m., in the Taiton Community Center.

We also had planned visiting the rest home some time before Christmas.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned Resolution Committee regretfully report the death of our member and faithful supporter brother CHARLES SCHILLER, who died in Polly Ryan Hospital November 21st.

Interment was November 23 in Greenlawn Cemetery, with Rev. Tommy Tallas of the Brethren Church officiating.

Brother Schiller is survived by a daughter, Evelyn Joyce Schiller of Rosenberg; a son, Charles H. Schiller of Richmond; five grandchildren; one sister; two brothers and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of GarmanyCalders Funeral Home of Rosenberg.

Brother Dlabaj was born August 1, 1923 in the Telico Community, the son of Frank and Mary Valek Dlabaj.

He was reared in the Telico Community. In January of 1943, he entered the US Army and served in the European Theater of War. He was discharged in 1945. January 15, 1946, he married Miss Martha Mach of the Creechville Community. After their marriage, they lived in the Telico Community where Brother Dlabaj was engaged in farming. He retired in April of 1983. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, the SPJST Lodge No. 25, and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He is survived by his wife, of Telico; two sons, Larry and Donny, both of Telico; three daughters, Mrs. Linda Corvart of Irving, Mrs. Martha Neighbors and Miss Tammy

Dlabaj, both of Telico; five grandchildren; three brothers, Charlie of Crisp; Stanley of Bristol, and Albin of Garrett; four sisters, Mrs. Annie Kovar of Lancaster, Mrs. Mary Sladecek of Ennis, Mrs. Mildred Wickliffe of Ennis, and Mrs. Elsie Rackley of Monte Vista, Colorado; his father, Frank Dlabaj of Ennis and several nieces and nephews.

OLIVER SHANNON, who died Tuesday, December 6, 1983 in a Fort Worth nursing home at the age of 84 years.

Brother Shannon was Chairman of the Board for Shannon Funeral Chapels and Shannon's Life Insurance Company.

He was a champion for the Northside, where he lived most of his life. He was a great Civic leader and wherever he went he greeted friends and was known to be able to call everyone by name. He contributed countless hours to community positions through the years.

He was a member of Masonic Lodge No 942 and was a York and Scottish Rite Mason. He served as both president and captain of the Moslah Temple Shrine Patrol, the only person to ever have held both positions.

He was a member of the Fort Worth Kiwanis Club.

During World War II, he served on the Tarrant County Draft Board.

He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church and helped in the formation of St. Anne's Episcopal Church in his home.

Both he and his wife, Thelma Shannon, who died in December, 1981, were honored as outstanding Senior Citizens two years ago.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 154 for 42 years.

Surviving are two sons, Jack 0.

Shannon Jr. and George W. Shannon; two daughters, Alice Marie Lewis and 011ie Stewart, all of Fort Worth; 21 grandchildren, and 16 great-grand-children.

Services were held at 1 p.m.

Wednesday in Shannon's North Chapel, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Josef Nesvadba /1926/, the internationally known Czech author of science-fiction, is a psychiatrist by profession. His professional experience is directly evident in his latest works "The Parents' Driving License" /1979/ and "Minehava for the Second Time" /1981/.

When I later travelled in the world, I used my experience for my "imaginary books of travels", for instance, "The Dialogue with Doctor Dong" /1964/ and my thus far biggest work, the novel "A Secret Report from Prague" /1978/. I think I touched in these books upon a chain of timely and political issues which attracted me - whether the morale of the revolution, attitude to one's own native country, and others. My work "The Errors of Erik N." /1974/ does not want only to be an "antiDaniken" book.

The book "I Am Seeking a Man to Be My Husband", which I am just finishing, deals with futurology. It ends a series of literary works inspired by psychology and psychiatry. I write in it not only about epidemics and conflicts which can threaten the world, but also about love in the years ahead. I write about the future because I think it is what matters most at present, because it is part of the present."

Literature and arts on the whole have now, when mankind is menaced by a number of catastrophes, a very important, but also difficult mission. Can you say something on this point?

"An American writer told me recently about a television serial which described in a very drastic way the remnants of life on the Earth after World War III. The response of the public to the serial was peculiar - a number of people, instead of feeling aversion and fear of the possibility of war, were capable of accepting a future war as something that cannot be avoided, and the serial as an instruction how to behave after the war.

Indifference is the worst evil in the world. Many people, confronted with the problems of the contemporary world - whether the danger of war or the possibility of an ecological catastrophe, etc. - take ostrichlike attitudes, want to enjoy themselves as much as possible; their egoism does not allow them to think of the future.

It is difficult for an artist to talk to such people, but he must redouble his efforts. Czech science-fiction has the great advantage that it-can draw upon great humanistic traditions.

And it is real humanism which we must strive for most at present."

His books are known in the USSR, Hungary, Bulgaria, Poland, Romania, the GDR, the FRB, the Netherlands, Sweden, France, and the USA. A selection was published also in Esperanto. Psychiatrist Josef Nesvadba cures his patients with the help of calm environment, but writer Josef Nesvadba does not evoke calm in his books. He even cannot. He would not be telling the truth. He is interested in specific problems of a specific period. But the right diagnosis itself can have therapeutic effects.

— Can your triptych of short stories "Minehava for the Second Time" be characterized as a warning against seemingly simple prescriptions for happiness presented to mankind by the current development of science and technology?

"This is a question of interpretation. The fact is that in my profession I meet unhappy people and that I have to ask not only as a physician, but also as a writer, why it is so.

I would say that two main lines exist in the development of sciencefiction - literature which "invents", seeks further roads of development of science and technology/the classical representative is Jules Verne!, and literature vThich "uses imagination", regardless whether the author's fantasy is scientifically based or probable - its goal is not to picture a possible future, but the present. Classics of this genre are H. G. Wells and Karel Capek.

I belong to the second line. I have always tried in my books to reflect our present, to seek solutions to the present day problems of which there are more than enough."

— Does this mean that your books are inspired by specific experience?

"Yes, it does. My first volumes of science-fiction short stories /"The Death of Tarzan", "The Einstein Brain" and "An Expedition in the Opposite Direction"! were published at the turn of the 1950's and 1960's.

Three of our greatest carols were written by Americans. "It Came Upon A Midnight Clear" was written by Edmund H. Sears, a Massachusetts Unitarian minister, in 1849. Dr. John Henry Hopkins, Jr., Episcopal rector from Williamsport, Pennsylvania, composed the words and music for "We Three Kings of Orient Are." Author of "0 Little Town of Bethlehem" was Phillip Brooks, a young Episcopal minister who later became bishop of Massachusetts. He was inspired to write the poem after a trip to the Holy Land.

Although non-religious, the rollicking "Jingle Bells" also came from the pen of a churchman, John Pierpoint, almost a century ago.

People ran out of money buying presents for each other, and they got so tired of giving presents that they just threw them over the fence or through the window.

Meanwhile, the little girl had so many dolls, she would sit on them and she got so that she couldn't stand the sight of presents anymore.

The little girl felt so badly about all this that she began to talk in her sleep and it was discovered that she was responsible for all the Christmases! Everyone was very angry with her and none of her playmates would play with her anymore.

So, at last she wrote to the Christmas Fairy to put an end to all the Christmases, but she got no answer. And, when she went to the Christmas Fairy's house, no one was there.

At last, the real Christmas Eve arrived. And, the next morning there was no Christmas! The little girl was very relieved and so was everyone else. She went to thank the Christmas Fairy and together they decided that it would be best after all, to have Christmas come just once a year.

Colonial Christmas Although the earliest American Christmases were rather grim due to the fact that the Pilgrims disapproved of celebrating the holiday, Christmas in the colonies in time was generally pretty festive.

There were no Christmas trees, as the German custom was not introduced into this country until the 1880s, but in other ways, Americans made merry.

In Williamsburg, Virginia, for instance, the celebrating began a week before Christmas and lasted until Twelfth Night, or January 5th.

Festivities included caroling, dancing and much feasting.

The holiday season was ushered in with a huge bonfire and candles were lit in every window, while fiddlers and singers filled the air with music.

Balls, fox-hunts, and visits between neighbors and family set the tone for the social season in colonial Virginia during the holidays.

The Dutch who settled on Manhattan Island brought over their Christmas customs from Holland, including the legend of Sante Klaas. So intent were the Dutch on celebrating Christmas that all Council meetings were called off from December 14 to three weeks after Christmas.

In Maryland, the many Catholic settlers brought holiday customs from their native England to keep a merry Christmas, too.

Food, of course, was an important element in all, colonial celebrations, although it varied in ethnicity. The Dutch, for instance, favored doughnuts, sweet cakes, short cakes and ginger cakes, fruit pies, preserves, fried shad, roasted chicken and bowls of milk and cream.

Virginians feasted on roast turkey with grapes, kumquats, roast beef, cranberry mold, spiced crab apples and glazed sweet potato slices.

Christmas Day itself always centered around church services, ranging from morning worship to midnight mass, with churches festively decorated and voices raised in praise of the season.

Because colonial settlers were often widely scattered, greetings at Christmastime were likely to be sent by way of musket fire. This custom of firing muskets, as a matter of fact, has evolved into setting off firecrackers in some parts of the south today.

Although the colonial Christmas did not have Santa as we know him, or the tree, or gift-giving to the extent of modern times, it was a time of joy.

A poem published in the Virginia Almanack during Colonial times expressed it best: "Christmas is come, hang on the pot, Let spits turn round, and oven be hot; Beef, pork, and poultry, now provide To feast thy neighbours at this tide; Then wash all down with good wine and beer And so with mirth conclude the year."

Colorful cards are easy to make.

Use a pale color of construction paper and fold it twice.

Then dip a Q-tips cotton swab in bright poster paint and draw snowflakes. Or, you may want to paint stars, candles or other holiday symbols.

Holiday Popcorn Balls

3/4 cup maple flavored 8 cups popped corn table syrup (remove unpopped 1/4 cup firmly packed kernels) brown sugar 112 cup chopped peanuts 1/4 cup butter or margarine 1/2 cup raisins In large bowl, combine popped corn, peanuts and raisins.

In heavy small saucepan, combine syrup and sugar. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring constantly. Continue cooking over medium heat until mixture reaches hard ball stage (260°F.) or until small amount of mixture dropped into very cold water forms a hard, but pliable, ball. Remove from heat; immediately stir in butter, mixing just until melted.

Immediately pour-Syrup mixture over popped corn mixture, mixing until well coated; let stand 10 minutes. Butter palms of hands. Using about 1 cup mixture for each, shape to form 8 balls. Place on wax paper; cool thoroughly. Wrap securely in plastic wrap. Makes 8 popcorn balls.

Cleanup is quick and easy because the interior of the frypan is DuPont SilverStone and the exterior is porcelainized in the popular new almond color or in harvest gold.

Baking the coffee cake in a frypan uses about 60% less energy than baking it in an oven .. and it's simple to do!

Make the coffee cake from this easy recipe: Prepare yellow packaged cake mix, according to instructions, adding 1 tablespoon grated orange rind. Preheat well-oiled frypan to 280° and bake for 35 minutes, with cover vent open for last 5 minutes.

Topping 172 cup brown sugar, 1(2 cup coarsely chopped packed nuts 4 tablespoons fine graham 2 tablespoons cracker crumbs melted butter 1 tablespoon grated or margarine orange rind 1 112 teaspoons cinnamon Combine topping ingredients in small Mixmaster mixer bowl. Beat on low speed until blended. Nuts may be sprinkled on top.

When baked, uncover, quickly sprinkle topping evenly over cake. Cover, turn dial to "off." Let stand 10 minutes longer before cutting. This sets the topping.

Uncover, cut into squares and serve right from frypan.

Cutting and serving with nonmetal utensils is recommended.
