**•****************** ******************** Fraternal Affairs SFM Elected Texas Section Fraternal Congress Officer ******************** ******************** Lodge No. 186, Caldwell, hosted a Child Abuse and Neglect program for area lodges Sunday, November 13 at its lodge home following its regular monthly meeting.

Presenting the program were Thelma Hrncir, SPJST project co-ordinator, District Director Ben Trcalik, assisted by Charles Jenkins, Region 6 Program director, and five supervisors from the Texas DRH. An interested group made up of representatives from Snook, New Tabor, and Caldwell attended the presentation and participated in the discussion which followed Any area lodges which were unable to attend are invited to contact Mr. Charles Jenkins at Phone No 409-823-0921 (Bryan), who will supply information, needs, and has agreed to meet with local lodges to explain how they can become involved in this statewide project.

A nice refreshment hour was prepared by the ladies of Lodge 186. Local arrangements were handled by Sister Faye Gail and President Clint Luksa.

PLEASE READ THIS This is especially written for our correspondents and others who send in articles, calendar dates, ads, etc. to be printed in our Vestnik.

Remember that our post office department recognizes five (5) official holidays and, on those days there is NO delivery of mail even between post offices. The five days are Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's and July 4, therefore, your mail is delayed a day. That is happening this Thanksgiving because it is always on a Thursday and some of your letters will certainly reach us Saturday or Monday when the Vestnik is already compiled Friday.

Keep in mind that, with the Christmas rush of mail, cards, etc. mail will be slow through the first of the year. — Mail Early!! *** I am sure most of our readers have read the speech presented by Mr. Lyndon Olson made at the TFC. In the first column on page three of last week's issue he mentioned Amendment 8 to our Constitution of Texas which would have exempted fraternal and veterans' organizations from property taxes.

This editor felt sure that this amendment would surely be passed by a vote of our voters. Quite frankly, I can not understand our voting public; the majority voted FOR most of the others (some detrimental), and AGAINST No. 8!

What were they thinking? Yet, who does more to help those in need than Veterans' Fraternal and Organizations?

Just notice what some of our SPJST lodges are doing to help the state and national governments in relieving the financial load in helping the needy!

Safety Corner

Fire Protection Preventing fires on the farm should be a high safety priority. If a fire strikes be ready to act fast.

It may take fire fighters a while to get help to you.

• Equip your home, farm buildings, tractors, trucks and combine with fire extinguishers.

• Install smoke alarms and develop a home fire escape plan, including rescue of the very young and infirm. Establish escape routes and an outside meeting place.

• Make sure all family members, especially young children know how to get help. Teach children how to call the telephone operator for help.

13, Dime Box Elects Officers

Lodge

Dear Readers, The lodge of Dime Box No. 13 held its monthly meeting Sunday, November 20, 1983. President Claude Flippin called the meeting to order at approximately 1:10 p.m.

Flag Bearer Penny Spitzenberger led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

In roll call of officers we had eleven present and two absent.

There was a total of 28 present at our monthly meeting.

Sister Dorothy Rackel read the minutes which were accepted as read. Sister Magdelene Iselt gave the financial secretary's report and Sister Doris Balcar gave the treasurer's report; all these reports were approved and accepted as read.

Our meeting was then opened for discussion on old business. The Board of Trustees of Lodge 13, Dime Box got together to discuss the Homecoming Committee's suggestion upon the use of the hall for the annual Dime Box Homecoming Celebration. The board reported, that, after much discussion, the lodge would not rent the hall out to the public for these occasions. This had also been brought up in our meetings before we had stated in previous meetings that the lodge would not rent out to the public, except for church-related organizations or volunteer organizations.

Lodge 13, Dime Box will be sponsoring polka dances starting January 8th; this is a free dance open to the public. The lodge decided to have these dances to entertain the older group of people for a change.

Workers at dances was a discussion under new business. The members discussed limiting the workers in the bar and in the kitchen to 3 people instead of four.

This is for crowds under 300 people.

We decided to keep the same amount of workers at the door in order to keep minors from exchanging tickets at the door.

The main order of business was to elect new officers for the 1984 year.

Christmas

Dear Members of Lodge 39: Be advised that our Christmas Party will be held December 10th this year.

The social hour begins at 5 p.m. and we will eat dinner at 6 p.m.

Santa will appear after dinner and time for the youth program. Dance will start at 8 p.m.

The social hour and dinner will be for members and living-in-home relatives; the dance will be free for all; you may invite anyone you please. Everyone is invited and welcome to our dance.

Ladies are asked to bring desserts; all of the rest of the meal will be provided by our lodge.

Since I will be giving up the president's and hall manager's offices, I want to thank all of you who cooperated and worked so had during my time as your president. I wish all the best of everything for you and our Lodge 39 in the future.

Dear Vestnik Readers and Friends: The monthly meeting of the El Campo-Hillje Lodge 40 was Wednesday, November 16th at 7:30 p.m.

President James Kulcak called for the meeting to order. Following the Pledge of Allegiance, there was a minute of silent tribute for our dear departed members, Sisters Mary Konarik, Mary A. Chaka, Mary Wishert and Brother Ben Liska, Sr. We were sad to hear of their passing.

Secretary Linda Rubesh read the minutes from the last meeting. They stood approved as read.

Treasurer Leona Macha gave her usual thorough report on all bank accounts. After paying all the bills it seems the accounts are in great shape.

Many thanks to Ganado and Taiton for the help with the last District VI meeting. The donations were greatly appreciated, and the food was great.

We had a new application for membership on Jason Scott Fiala.

Welcome to Lodge 40, Jason.

For unfinished business, bids were discussed for the new brick storage addition to the building.

There were two bids from local contractors. Bids were temporarily tabled until the Building Committee can meet with Bennie and James. A vote was taken about the amount of money to be spent. The committee is not to exceed $19,500.00, so they want to be very sure of their facts and specifications.

The old wooden storage building also must be moved. It is in bad repair and only holds junk now. It is more a hazard than a help.

The Kitchen/Bingo Committee had discussed the need for a nacho machine. The lodge has now purchased a machine and will be serving nachos at dances and bingo.

We need to remember to give Brother Dutch Kopecky a hand for all the work he has done selling punchout cards. Thanks, Dutch!

Financial Secretary Bill Goerig reminds all members that all who have not paid the $1.80 lodge membership dues have until December. 1st to get it in. All who haven't will be charged as a guest at the Christmas Party.

Excitement is building because turkeys are to be given away at Monday night bingo (November 21) and again for Christmas, December 19th. We expect the hall to be crowded. It's nice to see Hilije back on the map!

It was nice to see such a good turnout for election time. All the officers have put in a lot of time and planning to help organize the newlymerged lodge. We wish to thank them and all the committeemen for the wonderful job they have done.

Board of Trustee members were also elected; namely, Frankie Vanek for a 3-year term, Brother Al Kutac for a 2-year term, and Brother Albert Kresta, Sr. for a 1-year term.

Sister Rita Vanek has been busy organizing the Christmas Party set for Sunday, December 11th, beginning at 3 p.m. Free drinks for happy hour and Al Kutac and his band. Come and enjoy the fellowship with other members. Supper will be served at 5:30 p.m. by Staff's Catering, it will be turkey and dressing with the trimmings. All members are asked to bring a sweet or salad of their choice. Guests will

be charged $4 each for either child or adult. Sister Vanek will be mailing invitations soon.

A tree for the stage is planned and any ornaments will be welcomed.

You can give them to a youth club member or Sister Vanek or leave them at the hall. Even homemade ornaments are welcomed.

Youth Club members will be making ornaments and table decorations this next meeting. The youth club will be asked to furnish cheese and crackers for the Christmas Party.

Scholarships were discussed, again, and the decision was made to donate to local scholarship funds for the present.

Invitations are extended to Brother Nick Morris and Brother Matt Vanek for the installation of officers. We hope schedules will permit their attendance.

Delegates were elected for the State Convention to be held in registration Corpus Christi, beginning June 17th and Convention, June 18th. The eight delegates to represent our lodge are: James Bacak, Bill Goerig, Dora and Laddie Kopecky, Margie and James Kulcak, Bennie Reck and Frankie Vanek. Alternate delegates are Laverne Bacak, Ardis Bacak, Georgia Henderson and Rita Vanek.

Following the meeting delicious refreshments were served.

Lodge No. 54, West Members!

The annual meeting of Lodge No. 54, West will be held Sunday, December 4th at 1 p.m. at the lodge hall.

Waco Lodge Donates

$2,675 To Various Causes Dear Members and Friends: Lodge No. 66 held its meeting Sunday, November 20, 1983.

President Johnnie Gaidusek conducted the meeting. There was a very good attendance.

The flags were presented by James Yates and Chris Owens.

James Yates led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance and the Lodge Motto.

Visitors were Greg McNalley and Brother Rudy Zalman of Lodge 35, Elk. For roll call of officers revealed all were present.

Sister Bonnie Pruitt read the

minutes of the October meeting.

They were approved as read.

Brother Emil Hanus had Sister Engelke read the minutes of the Wednesday, November 2nd Board of Trustees' meeting.

Correspondence: A thank you note was read from Diane Pavlicek for the $500 Scholarship she received; a notice from the Supreme Lodge that members please send in their correct address so their mailing addresses can be brought up to date. A letter was read from the Knights of Columbus of a purchase of an ad in the brochure of their convention issue; a thank you note from Brother Ed and Sister Agnes Mazanec for the card sent to them signed by members at the last meeting. It was voted that we purchase a one-half page ad for $75 in the Knights of Columbus brochure.

Sister Shilling gave the Entertainment Committee report.

She gave the menu for the Christmas dinner. There will be fried chicken, dressing, gravy, slaw, green beans and drinks. The ladies are to bring a dessert of their choice.

The committee has purchased a new Christmas tree and decorations; also New Year's Eve favors have been ordered. The committee will set up the tree and decorate the hall Wednesday night, December 7th; come early and lend a helping hand.

The committee asked for funds for the party and dance. It was voted to give them $1500. Sister Shilling always has a very good report.

Health Committee Report: Sister Polly Gaidusek reported that sympathy cards were sent to the Albert Jaskas, Joe Jaskas on the loss of their sister, to the Richard Snapka family on the loss of husband and father, also the Willie Adamciks, to the Eddie Mazanecs (loss of Sister Mazanec's mother), and to the Raymond Sheltons on loss of her sister. May these loved ones rest in peace. A thank you note was read from the Harris family Get well cards were sent to Brother Otto Hanus on injury to his hand, Brother Henry Slovak who has been in the hospital (we hope he is doing OK), to Larrie Herring, injured in a school bus accident, to Sister Betty Urbanovsky (hand injury), and to Brother Frank Nors at the West nursing home. It was reported that Sister Frank Miller is ill. We all wish her a speedy recovery.

Sister Jeanette Smith for the Welfare Committee reported a thank you note was read from Jan and Donnie Lancaster for donation on the loss of their trailer home. It was voted we donate to: Mary Dighy (who is very ill) — $100, Ella Myer — $100, Larry Sanchez — $100, Buddy Seay — $100. (These are additional gifts to patients that we have donated to before. The totals for November were $200 and for December the total was $400; to Betty Denton for the Mexia School Christmas Fund, $200 added to the $75 donated by members; total of $275.

Other donations were made to: Reicher High School — $500, St. Mary's — $500, Child Abuse Association — $500, Caritas — $250, and Inter-City Ministries — $250; (a total of $2,000 to these organizations for all donations at this meeting today). A total of $2,675 was made to donations.

Sister Barbara Brem gave the youth club report. The club has donated to Christmas Seals, Salvation Army and S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1 in Taylor. the club will prepare bags of goodies for Santa. It was voted to give the club $150 to prepare these bags. The club will have their meeting December 22nd, then go caroling to a Bellmead rest home and then have a party and games at the hall. The club will donate cup towels to the lodge kitchen, and will collect canned items for a basket. Sister Brem said she had the youth club for two years; she is stepping out to let someone else take over. She said she enjoyed working with the youth members and it was an enjoyable experience.

Sister Brem did an excellent job with the youth; we will miss her and we are proud of her work with the club. She will be there to help with the youth; good luck for years ahead!

It was nice having Mr. and Mrs. Queener attending the meeting; they are new members, also.

President Gaidusek held a silent prayer for Sister Julia Guenat who passed away recently. Sister Engelke read a resolution of sympathy for Sister Guenat, a member for 53 years. May she rest in peace.

President Gaidusek then presented a check for $150 from the lodge to the Sister Libbie Parma Trust Fund.

President Gaidusek also congratulated Brother Otto Hanus who received a trophy for being the eldest member present at the State Fair in Dallas at Czech Day. It was voted we have bingo on New Year's Day night at 7 p.m. It was also voted we have no meeting in December due to other commitments and activities.

Sister Bonnie Pruitt made a motion we give a standing ovation to Sister Barbara Brem for her two years as a youth leader.

For elections of officers, committees and delegates for 1984, Brothers Louis Hykel, Emil Pustejovsky and Raymond Weinberger were asked to pass out the ballots, collect them and also count the votes. Sister Bonnie Pruitt wrote the names on the board, loaned by Brother Silas Smith.

There were 92 eligible to vote.

I wish to thank Brother Rudy and Sister Maxine Sefcik for their help in the years I have been English reporter. It is now time to step aside and let someone else have the job. I have enjoyed it; it has been fun and very educational. I met a lot of nice people. I am retiring, but I still plan to work with the lodge, however, I think we need some of our younger members to become involved. I wish Sister Dorothy Warren a very successful year ahead. I will look forward to reading her letters.

Reports Heard At Lodge 79 Meeting Good

The regular monthly meeting of Lodge 79, Corpus Christi was held Wednesday, November 9, 1983 at 7:30 p.m. at the SPJST Home on Kostoryz.

The meeting was called to order

by President Veselka. All officers were present, except Financial Secretary Milly Elzner who was down with the flu. There were ten members and one guest in attendance.

After the reading and approval of last month's minutes and other officers' reports, Convention Committee Chairman Monta Foster gave a lengthly report on our progress thus far. The Convention Committee met at the home of Monta and Mildred Foster November 2nd; our District VII Director Thelma Hrncir and her husband and daughter, Angie, also attended. An agreement was reached on the prices of our ads for the Convention Booklet and our activities for the convention. Due to the Supreme Lodge not approving of us having a function Tuesday instead, of Monday, we will not be able to have the fish fry and dance at our Lodge Home as we had originally intended. However, we do intend to have a superb Howdy Party to show our Corpus Christi hospitality. Plans for Monday night are incomplete at this time. Monta stressed that we will need a lot of help and will probably be appointing additional chairmen soon. The next meeting of the committee will be held Wednesday (the 16th) at our Lodge Home.

After this report two new members were approved. They are Lynsey Huff and Lonnie Allen Brown. Brother Frank Sacky wrote the policies.

President Veselka also asked for approval of our participation with SVPS No. 130 and Sokol Corpus Christi for putting on the Christmas Party. The membership approved it.

It was reported that the Juniors met in October and are still practicing the Beseda. They also had a Halloween Party with bobbing for apples and all. They are planning a project to raise funds for their group.

On the sick list we have Gene Lenhart, president of Sokol Corpus Christi, and Brother Joe Sijansky.

President Veselka reminded everyone that next month we will have election of officers and delegates and urged everyone to attend.

The meeting was adjourned at 8 p.m. The door prize donated by Sister Judy Majek was won by Sister Sacky.

Needville Annual Meeting Results

Lodge

Lodge No. 81 met November 13 at 12 noon for meal. Sister Benita Walzel baked a delicious beef roast and also a pot of gravy was included.

Everyone else brought various casseroles, salads, and an assortment of delicious desserts.

Promptly at 1 p.m., President Charlie Matcek opened the meeting and Sister Mary Werner led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

As a tribute to our deceased members, Brother Paul Wenzel, the audience stood in silence for a few moments. Our sympathy goes to the family. May he rest in peace.

All officers answered the roll call.

Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes.

Jo Ann Morgan gave the financial report. Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendal gave her report. Special Fund Treasurer Gilbert Walzel gave a good report. All of these reports were accepted as given.

We were sorry to hear Brother Stanley Slacalek was admitted to the Methodist Hospital for tests. We hope to see you at our next meeting.

Brother Nowotny reported on the repair of our barbecue pit at the hall; as of now, it isn't repaired but he is working on it.

The reflectors have been placed at the entrances to the hall grounds.

Sisters Benita Walzel, Vlasta Nowotny and Lillie Teykl were appointed to purchase Christmas gifts for the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 11 residents.

As the usual thing, there will be a Christmas tree at the December meeting and Santa will be on the scene to distribute bags of goodies to the children.

Also prior to the December meeting, we will have a noon meal to be served at 12:15 p.m. Willie Mae Kuykendal volunteered to bake the turkey and dressing and the rest of us must see to it that we have some other dishes and desserts to go with that.

Dear Members: The regular SPJST Lodge 87 meeting was held Friday evening, November 11th at 7 p.m., with President Vlasta Jez presiding.

With all this nice weather lately several of our lodge members have been out traveling again. Harvey and Rita Tumis just returned from Acapulco. They spent several days sight-seeing and just soaking up the sun.

John and Darlene Tumis just made a cross-country trip. They drove to Atlanta, Georgia to visit relatives, then jetted to Los Angeles, California. Some of their stops were Hollywood, the San Diego Zoo, Disneyland and finally, Las Vegas; from Las Vegas, they jetted back to Nashville (to pick up their two sons) and then drove back home to Tomball, Texas.

Bob and Pat Schleider made a weekend trip to Orlando, Florida.

They visited the Epcot Center. They said their trip was very fast and included a lot of walking.

All of our travelers agreed on one thing; it is good to get away, but it is always better to get back home.

Annual Meeting For Lodge 172, Pasadena Dear Members: A little news from Lodge Rozkvet Pasadena No. 172. This is a reminder about the election of officers; trustees and various chairpersons will be named by the lodge president and vice-president at the Wednesday, December 14th annual meeting.

The Nominating Committee has some names for officers and trustees, however, right now, I don't know who they are. We would like to see a large turnout for that day.

On the same night there will also be time for nominations off the floor and those members who would like to serve as officers or trustees, have someone to nominate you, please feel free and come by and let yourself be heard. The meeting will start at 7:30 p.m.

Some of the things that have gone on here at the lodge haven't had a very good turnout from our members, such as the October social which was free to all Lodge 172 members; only the guests had to pay.

There will be a Christmas Party for members Saturday, December 17 at 6:30 p.m., with a covered dish affair. We ask you to bring enough food for your family and guests; any you will bring may participate. There will be a dance after the party.

Lodge 175, Fort Bend To Hold Elections The annual meeting of Fort Bend Lodge 175 will be held December 12 at 7 p.m. in the Civic Center at Rosenberg in the Ceramic Room.

Since a large number of our members do not receive the Vestnik, it is difficult to notify all members of this very important meeting to decide the future of the lodge.

There will also be election of officers and delegates to the convention in Corpus Christi for 1984.

Events At Mid-Cities Lodge 183 Coming

Dear Members: The next monthly dance will be held Saturday, December 10, hopefully, at the new hall on Pleasant Valley Lane. The music will be by Bill Kucera and the Czechmates, so let's make this dance a great success. If anyone would like to be in an office of your lodge for the coming year, please get in contact with the committee or, if you know of someone who you would want the committee to ask to run, please let the committee know, but, most of all, be at the December meeting which will be Sunday, December 11th at 6:30 p.m. This is the one time of the year that you can vote on the members who you want to run your lodge for the year 1984; also you will be voting for a delegate for the 1984, Convention; be there; every vote is important; the leadership in the lodge is what keeps the lodge moving and growing and, as a member, you can make it happen. Wednesday, November 9, 1983, President Pearl Hanka called the meeting to order. She read another of her great poems; this was a "Thanksgiving Prayer", count your blessings.

Sister Rosalee Kostom, secretary, read the minutes from the previous meeting and they were approved as read. Correspondence was also read and acknowledged.

Sister Lillie Spies, treasurer, gave her report and it was a good one.

Sunshine Reporter Mary Kosut gave her report; she sent get well cards to Sisters: Virginia Hale, Elsie Talcott, Florena Taake and Willie Mae Stang. Sympathy card was sent to Sister Mary Johnson and birthday cards to the sisters who had a birthday in November.

It was good to see two of our Sisters Shirley Sue High and Willie Mae Stang back at the meeting.

The Birthday Club Sisters want to thank Brother George Hosek who donated the pot plants for Czech Day to be given away. We did not have a money-making project so this Wednesday, at our meeting, three names were drawn and the flowers went to Sisters Bessie Vasula, Willie Mae Stang and Agnes Pederson.

Our Thanksgiving Family Night

Dinner, Nbvember 3rd was wellattended, and we welcomed thirtysix guests; too numerous to mention by name. The birthday members were Genevieve Earle and Merle Kovar. The lucky winner of the patch quilt, donated by Mrs. Mollie Walker, was' won by Carrie Ann Cleveland and the grandma doll, donated by President Marie Tesar was won by Mrs. Flora Koci. Our thanks to many of you who helped to make our club project a success.

Those of us who are members of SPJST Lodges 92, 154, and 180 are looking forward to a pleasurable early Christmas party Sunday, Dec. 4th at Lodge 180 in Burleson, sponsored by the four local SPJST lodges. Knowing Mydell Grochaske, she and her committee will make welcome all the members and friends who will attend this party.

We extend our congratulations to Donald and Rosie Steinman who celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary November 11th. A pleasant surprise party with family and close friends was held at the Sokol Hall. We wish them many more anniversaries.

Also congratulations to Donna Rose (Steinman) Parker who was promoted to Group Vice-president, in charge of marketing and administration, for the Ft. Worth Chamber of Commerce. I, personally, take pride in the accomplishments Donna Rose continues to make, because, in 1962 when a senior in high school, she was the recipient of the Delta Psi Kappa Alumnae Chapter scholarship upon my recommendation. She went on to college at North Texas State, and has been climbing the ladder into higher positions ever since completing her schooling. Now her own teenage daughter, Jill Parker, is following her mother's footsteps with honors by being elected the student of the year at Azle Jr. High School and also being president of the student body.

Another young girl, Lisa Hopkins, granddaughter of Jeanie Mason, has been given a scholarship for her scholastic achievements for the next semester by the TCJC northwest campus in Ft. Worth. We congratulate Lisa and Jill for their honors.

Finally, congratulations to our son, R. L. Alholm, math teacher and Jr. girls varsity volleyball coach for winning the Ft. Worth Public Schools City volleyball championship. This meant another trophy in the schools trophy case.

As I prepare my report, his school, Trimble Tech, is celebrating by winning its football game last evening and is now getting in high gear for the 5A high school playoffs.

We wish them much good luck.

We extend get-well wishes and a full recovery after surgery to Mr. John Zubb, father of Ailene Kercho and to Ben Beseda of Dallas. Mr. Zubb is in Medical Plaza in Ft. Worth and will undergo an operation after Thanksgiving. Ben Beseda is in the. Methodist Hospital in Dallas and is undergoing a 3 bypass heart surgery as I prepare this report.

This being the season for Thanksgiving, I am sure many of us can count our blessings one by one.

Seaton Choral Club News The Seaton Choral Club met Tuesday night to practice their Christmas carols and make plans for the busy Holiday season. They will meet to sing Thursday, December 8 at Seaton Star Hall, December 11 at the Lodge No. 47 Christmas party and December 13 to meet at Parkview Grocery at 6:30 p.m. to go caroling to the homes of shut-ins.

December 18, they will have their club Christmas Party which will start at 2 p.m., with the meal to be served at 5 p.m. The menu has been changed from smoked turkey to barbecued beef and pork to be made

by Frank Mikulec. The ladies are asked to bring a vegetable dish and a sweet. Gifts of $3 are to be exchanged; the women to bring women's gifts; the men, men's gifts.

DECEMBER PROJECT CHRISTMAS, OR THE FEAST OF THE NATIVITY This is the most important feast in the whole Christian year, the anniversary of the birth of Jesus.

The story of the birth is told in the Gospel of. St. Luke.

Although December 25 is observed as the anniversary of the birth of Jesus the exact date of the birth is not known. January 6 was observed by the Christians in Palestine as the date of both the birth and the baptism of Jesus as early as the fourth century. But there was doubt in the mind of the Bishop of Jerusalem over the correctness of the date. He wrote to the Bishop of Rome asking him to consult the archives in that city to discover if possible the real date of the birth. The Bishop of Rome made an investigation and replied that Jesus was born on December 25. But modern scholars are of the opinion that this date was fixed arbitrarily.

Egyptian theologians had fixed the date as May 20. Others had put it on April 19 or 20 and still others on January 6. In fact, there is no month in which reputable scholars have not fixed the date of the birth.

The earliest record of any celebration comes from Clement of Alexandria who lived in the latter part of the second century and the early part of the third. The name for the day in English dates from the eleventh century when it was called Cristes Maesse. In Dutch it is known as Kerst-rnisse, and in Latin as Dies Natalis. Noel, the French name for this day is derived from the Latin word "natalis", meaning birthday.

It was not used in Massachusetts, however, until 1860 when John C. Bushmann, a German, join the Moravians at what is now Zinzendorf. Lighted candles are set up a tree in Westfield, and Bethlehem, Pa. On Christmas day distributed to those present and the the Count holding a lighted candle congregation sings "Christ Whose invited the people to see it. and singing a German hymn, led the Glory Fills the Skies". It was the One of the early German settlers into a stable attached to the Christmas revels of the Hessians in celebrations in America was first house built by them. The old English custom of welcoming Christmas on the preceding eve by singing carols was introduced early in America, especially in those parts of the country in which the rigid simplicities of Puritanism were not insisted upon. The celebration of Christmas was forbidden in Massachusetts for a time but when the observance of the festival became general the occupants of the houses on Beacon Hill in Boston placed candles in the front windows on Christmas eve, and the waits going about the city singing carols would pause before these houses and sing their merry songs.

The Boston custom of placing lights in the windows on Christmas eve spread to other cities. With the growing use of electricity, wreaths with electric lights in them took the place of candles.

The use of fireworks on Christmas is common in Italy, France and Spain. The French settlers in Louisiana introduced this custom in America and it spread to many other Southern states so that while fireworks are associated with the Fourth of July in the North they are regarded in the South as an indispensable accompaniment of Christmas. The day was observed in the South much earlier than in the North.

The belief in Santa Claus as the giver of Christmas presents comes to us through the Germans. It derives from the legend of St. Nicholas — Santa Claus is a German corruption of the name — who lived in the fourth century. St. Nicholas learned that three young women had no suitors as their father was too poor to provide them with a dowry. So one night he filled three bags with gold and threw them into the windows of the rooms occupied by the young women and they soon were happily married. Unexpected gifts were thereafter said to come from St. Nicholas. His feast day occurs on December 6, and in Germany in the course of time he came to be described as the giver of Christmas presents. The children put their shoes and stockings beside the fireplace on Christmas eve in the hope that he would fill them with goodies. The myth that Santa Claus descends the chimney to find the stockings comes from the Norsemen.

The legend is that at the winter solstice the goddess Hertha appeared in the fireplaces in their great halls and brought with her happiness and good fortune.

The custom of sending Christmas cards to one's friends originated in England in 1846. It was suggested

by Sir Henry Cole to Joseph Cundall, a London artist who had a drawing made by J. C. Horsley, R. A., and lithographed in black and white and colored by hand. About a thousand copies of it were sold.

Christmas cards were introduced in the United States in the late 1870's

by Marcus Ward & Company of London who had a monopoly of the market for a time.

LODGE 6 CHRISTMAS DINNER/PROGRAM ALL SET Dear Members and Friends: The youth club meeting was held after the mother lodge meeting of Lodge 6 at Cottonwood. The attendance was good; we have 8 new members and 3 social members who joined our youth club. We are glad to have you and attend all our activities because we have something to do for all of you.

October 16, the youth club and their parents went to Six Flags on a pretty day and everyone had a lot of fun.

The bake sale at Leroy Bank was very good October 28th. I want to thank each of you who donated to the bake sale and helped in any way.

October 29, the club had a hayride and wiener roast at Brother Robert and Sister Lydia Dobecka's home.

We wish to thank them for the use of their trailer and for the use of their home to hold the wiener roast.

The youth clubbers had a Halloween costume contest.

Winners were: prettiest - Kevin Mach, ugliest - Mechelle Mach, best dressed - Tammi Dobecka, funniest - Kevin Dobecka. Our thanks to the judges for judging the contest for us, also for our Thanksgiving contest and Halloween mask contest.

October 30, a few of our members and youth members attended the District III fall meeting at Elk. The food was good and everyone was real nice at the lodge.

November 15, the clubbers and their parents had supper at Long John Silvers and all of us enjoyed the evening very much.

The club held a kitchen shower; also donated to a few charities.

We want to thank Libbie Bayer for the Campbell labels which helped out very much.

November birthday celebrants are: Darrell Uptmor, Marvin Mynar, Christi Mach, Mechelle Mach. Terry Hykel brought the cake. Thank you, Terry! Keith Hykel will bring the cake to our December meeting.

The youth members are making wreaths for the rest home and will also bring cakes for their Birthday Party, December 7th.

Lodge 6 will hold its Christmas Party December 18, starting at 3 p.m. We will have a program, exchange of gifts; Santa Claus will visit us too, and supper will be served. The members are asked to bring a covered dish and pastry; come and have fun with us!

Friday, we will make Christmas ornaments, so come out.

Survivors include one son, Joe of El Campo; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

He graduated from Ennis High School in 1941. December 10, 1942 he entered the U.S. Navy and served in the Asiatic and Pacific Theaters of War. He received the Good Conduct Medal, American Area Campaign and World War II Victory Medals. He was discharged April 26, 1946. April 13, 1947, he was married to Miss Joan Toals of Ennis.

November 9, 1953, he was employed

by Ennis Business Forms. At the time of his death, he was marketing manager of Ennis Business Forms.

He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council 1353 in Ennis, and 4th Degree Member of Father Abram J. Ryan Assembly of Dallas, past-president of St. John's Booster Club, past financial secretary of SPJST No. 25, member of Wood Redistribution Committee for the City of Ennis, and chairman of the Usher Committee of St. John's Church.

He is survived by his wife, Joan of Ennis; one son, Albert W. Jr. of Ennis; two daughters, Mrs. Ronnie (Neicylene) Vitovsky of Ennis and Mrs. David (Regina) Rounsavall of Ennis; two grandsons, Bryan Vitovsky and Michael Rounsavall and three granddaughters, Julie and Vickie Vitovsky, and Gretchen Rounsavall all of Ennis; three sisters, Mrs. Wesley Knize of Ennis, Mrs. Olin Bowers of Corsicana and Miss Carolyn Haskovec of Ennis and his mother-in-law Mrs. Neicy Toals of Ennis.

Mr. Liska, a resident of El Campo for the past 65 years, died Tuesday in a local nursing home after an extended illness.

He was born in New Ulm October 25, 1898, the son of the late Frank and Anna Schredick Liska.

Survivors include: two daughters, Jane Barnard of Victoria and Annie Drastata of El Campo, one son, Ben Liska, Jr., of Hillje; one sister, Antonia Daumruck of El Campo; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Grandsons served as pallbearers.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY The officers and members of Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje wish to express its heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge sister, MARY A. CHAKA. Funeral services for Mary A. Chaka, 80, were held at 2 p.m.

Thursday in St. Philip's Catholic Church with the Rev. James Brunner officiating.

Burial was in the Garden of Memories under the direction of Triska Funeral Home. A rosary was recited in the Triska Chapel at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday., Mrs. Chaka, a resident of El Campo for the past 55 years, died Tuesday in a Victoria hospital after an extended illness.

She was born in Hallettsville July 13, 1903.

She was a member of SPJST Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje.

Survivors include: four daughters, Annie Bilicek, Mary Fucik and Frances Chaka, all of El Campo and Helen Brown of North Carolina; four sons, Ernest and Joe, both of El Campo, Adolph of Pasadena, and Charlie of Port Lavaca; one sister, Martha Rutledge of Trinity; one brother, Gus Matulla of Hallettsville; 25 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A Holy Mass by Rt. Rev. Msgr.

Julius A. Petru was held at 9 a.m. followed by an all-day gathering of relatives and friends.

The families gathered and introduced their children and all lined up for a march with Grandpa Svatek lined up first to dance with his daughters and on down the line to the last grand and greatgranddaughter. Afterward, the guests joined in and danced the rest of the afternoon wishing Mr. Svatek many more happy birthdays. He is making his home with his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Adamik of Taiton.

Mr. Svatek always helps out with various chores at the Taiton Community Center and we value his help.

Mr. J. W. (Lottie) Krutilek The children of Mrs. J. W. Krutilek honored their mother on her 80th birthday at the Taiton Community Center, October 22nd.

The party started at 10 a.m. and lasted until 3 p.m. At noon a meal consisting of turkey and dressing and other trimmings was served after Rt. Rev. Msgr. Julius A. Petru led Grace.

Numerous guests came to celebrate from Houston, Hockley, Spring, Needville, New Gulf, Wharton, New Braunfels, La Salle, Kingwood, Garwood, Beaumont, Fort Stockton, Waco, Louise, El Campo and Rosenberg. Her sons, John came from Washington and Eugene from Fort Stockton.

Mrs. Krutilek opened many gifts and the cake was served after a

September 10, 1983 Mr. and Mrs. Oldrich Horak celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary at Lodge No. 84, Dallas.

Beulah and Oldrich were married September 11, 1943 in Pilot Point, Texas. They lived in Tioga, Texas prior to moving to Dallas in 1948.

Beulah has worked at Taylor Publishing Company since 1965.

Oldrich was employed with SargentWelch Scientific for 28 years and retired in 1979. They have one daughter, Cindy, married to Paul Pokladnik and one grandchild, Jordan.

The reception began at 3:00 in the afternoon with a cheese table and drinks. Beulah greeted the guests and wore a beautiful, full length mauve chiffon dress with a white bead and rhinestone spray design.

She carried a clutch purse with a white butterfly orchid attached. Her daughter, Cindy, wore a red taffeta dress at mid-calf with a white gardenia corsage. Oldrich and his son-in-law, Paul, wore their own tuxedoes with red rose boutonnieres. Even baby Jordan (14 mos.) had a small rose boutonniere.

The cakes were cut at 5:00. Beulah chose a beautiful 3-tiered all white cake with cupids. Natural fall flowers accented each layer with a bouquet covering the top. Oldrich preferred a round, double-layered dark chocolate cake with frosty fruit for decoration.

At 6:00 we were served a meal of ham and klobase with all the trimmings. We were even treated to green beans, pickles and peppers from Oldrich's garden.

Those helping in the house party were Amelia Chambers, Dottie Hagar, Alisa Jarred, Barbara Jones, Joyce Moore, Cheri Petr, Wanda Petr, Betty Pokladnik, Nikki Pokladnik, Carol Rejcek, Kim Rejcek and Vicki Sims.

The dance began at 7:00 with music furnished by the Country Boys. The Grand March was led by good friends, Adolph & Evelyn Salac. The dancing went on until 11:00.

Everyone enjoyed the celebration and we wish Beulah and Oldrich 40 more years!

Use of capital letters: There is a difference in the usage of capital letters in Czech and English. Ex.: Yesterday was Wednesday, July 14, 1968.

Capitals are not used for emphasis or for news headlines in Czech. On the whole, the use of capital letters is rather restricted in Czech.

Here are other important points in spelling: Pronouns and possessive adjectives of the POLITE — FORMAL usage are capitalized, as are those of the FAMILIAR — INFORMAL usage: Vy, Yam, Va,S; Ty, Tvilj, Tobe. The latter are ALWAYS in caps; the polite form is capitalized only when referring to one person. If you are referring to a group [plural], then the pronouns are not capitalized.

A common error made by many Czechs in this area is that when they use the formal Vy, Vas, Vam, they use a PLURAL VERB, ALTHOUGH THEY ARE ADDRESSING ONLY ONE PERSON. WRONG Vy, [1 person] jste veera jell do mesta. Do
