One of the principal speakers at the recently concluded Congress in Temple was State Insurance Board Chairman Lyndon Olson, Jr. Mr. Olson is originally from Waco and has served on the State Board of Insurance since 1978, having twice served as chairman and appointed by then Governor Dolph Briscoe and more recently by Governor Mark White. In 1982 he served as the National president of Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). He is a former member of three State Legislatures, the 63rd, 64th, and 65th, and the Jaycees named him one of the Five Outstanding Texans Upon completion of his talk, Mr. Olson received a handshake from Bro. Morris in 1978. His services as speaker this and applause from TFC President Sid Pokladnik and Section President Walter year were secured by Nick A. Stahmer. Morris, presidentof the SPJST, who introduced him. Mr. Olson's remarks follow. —NAM I'm delighted to have another opportunity to meet with the distinguished leadership and delegates from fraternal benefit societies serving Texas. I guess it has been four years, Nick, (Nick Morris) since you invited me to speak to the Texas Fraternal Congress at New Braunfels. It's particularly good to be with you on familiar Central Texas turf. When I pass the north city limits sign of Austin, I always feel a sense of anticipation -- that I'm heading home to the part of Texas where I was born and have spent most of my life. Czech Day 'Queen'
Sister Christina Zemanek
Sister Christina Zemanek (93) was selected the "Queen" of Czech Day at the State Fair in Dallas. In their beginning years Sister Christina and husband, Joseph Zemanek, (who was a director of both the SPJST and RVOS organizations) lived near the communities of Needville and Guy (over 70 years, ago) where Br. Zemanek was recording secretary of Lodge "Laskavast” for 16 years, and his wife, Christina, was at every meeting or function with some sort kolace or pies, etc. Later they moved to Blessing, Tx. and Br. Zemanek helped tremendously in organizing Lodge Elmaton No. 148. Her daughter, Sister Liddie Pavelka, Dallas, writes: "The lodge meetings and (Continued on page 2)
