From the President's Office More On Delegate Eligibility And Their Election To Whom It May Concern: In last week's Vestnik, Bro. Kacir and I covered a brief review of the eligibility of delegates. We stated that the meeting attendance requirements set out in our by-laws cannot be deviated from or waived for any individual. Some may think that the requirements are too stringent, but they were passed by the delegates in the last convention and if anyone feels they need changing then that ought to be addressed in the coming Convention. We have to deal with the by-laws as they presently exist, however.

Example: A person or persons are officers of a lodge and are good officers and very active in lodge activities - however, they have been members of the SPJST less than three years. Their lodge has been in existence for a number of years. Can they be elected delegates?

The answer has to be "no" because of Art. 4(e)3, which reads as follows: Only that member may be delegate or substitute delegate who attended a majority of the regular meetings during each of the three years preceding the election of delegates to convention Since they have been members less than three years, there is no way they could meet the requirements of this article.

These questions may arise: What do you do in case of a tie in the vote for delegates? What if two or more people receive the same amount of votes?

This is not covered in the by-laws, but there would be a problem if it concerns votes for the delegate receiving, the highest number of votes or the one receiving the lowest amount of votes in the number of delegates that lodge will be sending to the Convention.

The position of the delegate receiving the highest number of votes must be determined because of Art. 4(g)4, to wit: ". . . Odd vote or votes are taken by the delegate receiving the largest number of votes when elected." The "ranking" of the other delegates does not matter; they are full-fledged delegates. If there is a tie vote for the last position, that also has to be determined because after that is decided, the others who tied for that position will automatically fall into the list of substitute delegates.

The final choices in both instances should be determined by whatever method a majority of the members chooses.

If there is a tie in the vote for substitute delegates, it doesn't matter, EXCEPT in the case of a tie for the highest number of votes, because of Art. 4(g)3, to wit: ". .4f,e; **4

lodge is entitled to an additional delegate . . ., or if anyone of the elected delegates cannot go to the convention, for whatever reason, the substitute with the highest number of votes fills the first vacancy . . ."

The method of determining this should also be up to the majority of the members.

The form appears in this issue of the Vestnik. While a good number of individuals has indicated interest in purchasing the book, the number of lodges is woefully low 40 to be exact. That's not a very good percentage out of some 128.

Before too long, we hope to publish a picture of what the front cover and title page will look like, but of course, we can't show you what the entire book will look like because there isn't one at the present time.

From the Vice President's Office State Field Managers To Be Directly Involved In Sales

At the recent Supreme Lodge Meeting a new sales procedure was instituted to insure that all SPJST insurance business is acted upon in a timely fashion by our sales representatives.

Effective immediately, all SPJST insurance certificates that require renewing or converting will be closely monitored by the Home Office. The SPJST sales representative will be notified, as in the past, but if no action is taken by the applicable sales representative to convert or renew the member's certificate, the state field managers will be notified to conserve this business.

This change in procedure will in no way effect what the conscientious SPJST sales representative is now doing. The change will however allow the SPJST to retain members we have lost in the past by the sales representatives who are not servicing their clients.

In order for the SPJST to maintain our present enviable poSition, it is necessary that we give all members prompt, efficient service. This change in procedure will insure that all members and future members receive the services that the SPJST is so proud to render.

`Youth Activities in the TFC and Their Value."

First . . . I would like to tell you a little about our Texas Fraternal Congress. It IS composed of twenty-

(Cyrill (Sid) Pokladnik, SPJST Director (District III), was another one of the speakers at the recently concluded Texas Fraternal Congress in Temple.

The following remarks are those that Bro. Pokladnik delivered to the State Fraternal Congress Section meeting of the National Fraternal Congress which recently met in Denver, Colorado. There will be more pictures from the TFC and related activities in coming issues.—NAM) seven (27) fraternal societies, with four of the societies being Texas fraternals, with 23 being from other parts of the country.

Each Member-Society is represented in the Congress by from three to fifteen delegates to the annual congress meetings. In attendance at our 1982 Congress we had 106 qualified delegates and 75 visitors.

The officers of the Congress are elected by rotation of the MemberSocieties. By this plan all Societies have equal participation.

To be eligible a Society must have had delegates present for at least three consecutive years and be current in its dues to the Congress.

The president of the Congress chooses the city for his or her annual meeting. The Annual Meetings start Friday with delegate registration and an evening meeting prior to a "Get-Acquainted" banquet. The Congress closes at noon Sunday .. . so as to give everyone time to get back home for work Monday.

At our annual banquets . . . we have the usual ceremonies plus a special speaker chosen for his knowledge of the Fraternal System.

4/VESTNIK—Wednesday, November 16, 1983 the agenda starts with a general business meeting . . . then section meetings covering FIC Section, Fraternal Affairs Section, Youth Section and Youth Program, and then Sunday, a Memorial Service and a final brief business meeting.

In our Congress the Youth have always been sponsored and encouraged. We know that the future of Fraternalism depends upon interested youth, and anything we can do to encourage that interest is given priority.

The youth participate in the Youth Section of the Congress either as a panel member or as a speaker. Their topic is generally why they are interested in their Society and what it means to them to belong to a Fraternal Society.

After the Youth Section business meeting, a Youth Program is presented to the Congress and friends.

In the Youth Programs we have as many as 75 youth participating.

Their ages range from 8 to 21; both boys and girls participate and the program lasts for about one and onehalf hours.

Each Society chooses and selects the youth to participate and each Society pays the expenses of their Youth.

The youth are very appreciative of their part in the Congress.

Although the format is basically the same year after year, the participants largely change year by year so there is not a lessening of interest.

There are numerous other reasons for the youth to be an important part of the Congress; among those reasons are it: 1. Provides an enjoyable prograni for a session of the State Congress.

2. Creates a happy time of fellowship between performers, parents, delegates and visitors.

3. Helps bridge "generation gap" between youth and the more mature delegates.

4. Provides a showcase for exceptional talent which could lend encouragement for further excellence.

5. Lets youth feel they are providing a service to the State Congress, which is always characterbuilding.

6. Publicizes the State Fraternal Congress throughout the circle of family, friends, school, etc., of the youth participants which helps others know of the Congress. This could lead to further interest and support!

7. Provides a special honor to a youth who is chosen to represent his/her Society which generates some competition between the youth of that Society.

8. Thus helping make them true fraternalists and future leaders.

In closing, let me say ... I am glad to be part of a Congress that encourages our youth in characterbuilding activities and emphasizes patriotism.

Toward the end of the Congress Sunday morning, the usual Certificate of Appreciation from the TFC was presented to Bro. Pokladnik by TFC Secretary-Treasurer Walt Mueller, Jr. of Houston.

The principal speaker at the Friday night banquet of the TFC was Vestnik publisher and president of Gresham's Inc., Larry Ingram. The subject of his presentation was "The View From The Ivory Tower" which was a humorous and still serious treatment of the editing and publishing business. He was introduced by TFC President Sid Pokladnik, and seated to his right is Sis. Justine Pokladnik. (All TFC Photos by Tom Farley of the Sons of Hermann, San Antonio.)

October 23, 1983, the members of Lodge 80, Holland proudly celebrated their 20th Anniversary of their present lodge hall.

Lodge 80 President D. I. Bohac (I f 1, presenting a plaque to lifetime Honor ary President Joe Barabas, Jr. Holland Lodge 80 celebrated their 20th anniversay of the present lodge building, October 23rd. At that occasion, the officers and all the members of Lodge 80 surprised and presented Brother Joe Barabas, Jr. with a beautiful plaque for his many, many years of service and loyalty, to the lodge and this also goes to his sweet wife, Mary, for all her untiring support.

There are many more members and also non-members who have attributed to the success of our lodge, but there seems to be in every case, someone who has to take the LEAD and Brother Joe Barabas, Jr. just fits this position.

From us to you, Brother Joe and Sister Mary Barabas, the entire Lodge 80 and the whole community: We wish to say May God Bless You and reward you with many, many more years of Happy Life!

Television sets will be available for watching the Cowboys defeat the Chiefs.

Dear Members: Remember, November 20th it's the Ennis Polka Dance Club having a dance in Dallas at Lodge 84. The Texas Dutchmen will be playing on stage.

The door will open at 1:30 p.m. and dancing will be from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m.

The regular monthly meeting of the membership of Lodge 88 is scheduled for November 21st, at 7:30 p.m. It is important that you, as a member, attend this meeting so that you are up-to-date on lodge 88 events and can be informed to properly vote at the upcoming Annual Meeting in December. You have a vote in the future of our lodge! Please attend this November meeting and also the annual meeting in December!

The "11.0.T . Czechs" played for the last dance of this month October 29, with the dress code being casual or a Halloween costume. The music was good but no costumes showed up; just the same, the guests enjoyed a very nice evening dancing. Hosting this dance were Evelyn Zientek (in charge of the evening) with husband, Ed, serving in the ticket office. Karl Lindemann escorted the guests to their tables while Lorina, his wife, greeted the arriving guests.

I came early and watched the happy dancers in the Chandelier Ballroom for a while and then, with Rita, wife of our Entertainment Chairman Homer Alexander, explored the Blue Room where we joined Bob and Margaret Allbritton, Erna O'Conner and Irene Slovacek and enjoyed favorite our refreshments prepared by our faithful Nat, the bartender and exchanged greetings with Ed Zalmanek and, his lovely wife, Vlasta, who arrived with friends.

The Blue Room is always a pleasant corner to meet your friends and meet new ones; try it sometimes.

Czech Day I was pleasantly surprised to chat a while with our dear Harriette Allison who came in company with her close friend, Vlasta Mattice, to enjoy the day's activities. Harriette was always a valuable part of our lodge. She directed many Czech and English plays to the delight of our appreciative audiences and, to this day, she still serves on the Memorial Fund Committee.

Just back from their two-month honeymoon, spent in Belgium and some in Czechoslovakia, were Vladimir Maudr with his lovely wife and sister, Draza Pokorny. They

came to enjoy the Czech Day activities all through the day including a delicious turkey dinner.

The three stayed all day enjoying everything, the parade of costumes and later the potato pancakes outside by the Gazebo with music and delicious wine and finished their day with a farewell drink in our Blue Room.

Dr. John Jerabeck also came in company of his nephew, Harlan Maresh, to enjoy the day including dinner and the day's program. Dr. Jerabeck was greeted by many friends and most were his patients; he is now semi-retired and I am glad he still practices part-time; he is my doctor and I would hate to go and change at this late date.

Sister Sue High also came to be part of our celebration all dressed up in her Czech costume to take part in the day's activities. Sue, now for quite a while, was on the sick list, but she looked very good. Sue is a member of the Birthday Club and served as president for one year in 1979. There might have been many others who we don't see very often but the crowd was so dense that it was a miracle if you found someone you were looking for; it was impossible to contact all; don't wait until next year, come out any time and enjoy your lodge.

Sister Ann Bunch, back from her two weeks vacation in London and Paris with her daughter, Sheral Parker, made several side trips in London and, of course, shopped at "Harrods" and the highlight of their trip was a visit to Buckingham Palace where they enjoyed lunch and tea. How come I just learned Ann's son-in-law, Sheral's husband, is a chauffeur to the Queen. What a surprise! In Paris they visited the Eiffel Tower, Arch of Triumph, the Louvre, Notre Dame, Montmarte (the artists square). In both countries the flowers were still in full bloom and the weather was beautiful and no rain.

A four-bypass surgery was performed on John Shelander who is 50 years old and the results were very successful; the surgery took place in the Southwest Hospital here in Houston. His sister, Annie Skyvara, underwent knee surgery in Memorial General Hospital and both are doing fine. Judy Ehlert, sister of Lillie Spies, is looking well after her recent hip surgery in Heights Hospital. Lillie Spies' sister-in-law, Adele Gerlich of Victoria, passed away in Victoria Hospital and was laid to rest Monday, November 7th in Hallettsville, Texas. Sincere sympathy to the surviving family of Adele Gerlich.

We are sad in the passing away of our Brother Jaroslav B. Pokorny who died at his residence here in Houston, October 27, 1983, at the age of 83. He was born in Czechoslovakia and came to America in 1950. He was a member of the Sokol here in Houston and retired for several years. Mass was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 5 in Christ The King Catholic Church. Survivors are son, Radomir and daughter, Jarmila, both of Czechoslovakia. We extend our sincere sympathy to his son and daughter.

We bow our heads in sorrow in the passing away of our Brother Henry J. Studney who passed away after a lengthy illness Thursday,

November 3, 1983, at the age of 75.

Henry, in his life, traveled and lived in many countries. He spoke and wrote 6 different languages. He was a member of the Navy Retired Officers' Association, Lt. Commander U.S. Navy in World War II. Graveside services and interment were Saturday, November 5 in Brookside Memorial Park. Survivors are sister, Harriette Allison; half-sister, Vlasta Mattice; niece, Cathy Studney, all of Houston and niece, Marilyn Sikora of Crosby. Our sincere sympathy to the surviving family of Henry J. Studney.

Thanksgiving The following article and questions deal with the holiday of Thanksgiving, a holiday that is uniquely American. As in the preceding contest, the questions follow the article very closely. I'm again assigning a value of 20 points to the project, provided all questions are answered correctly. The deadline for your answers to be received here is Friday, December 2nd. There will be another project for the month of December.

Incidentally, each individual has to fill out a separate form, that is, two individuals cannot get credit for only one set of answers submitted.

The Pilgrims, who in 1621 observed our initial Thanksgiving holiday, were not a people especially enthusiastic about the celebration of festivals. In fact, these austere and religious settlers of America would have been dismayed had they known of the long and popular history of harvest festivals, of which their Thanksgiving was only the latest. It seems that wherever man has tilled the soil and urged his crops into fruition, he has paid homage to the heavenly being who has permitted him such good fortune. And he has taken care by means of sacrifices to ensure the continued beneficence of the Supreme Power.

The harvest festival, with its attendant rites, seems to have spread out from a relatively small area of land, from Egypt and Syria and Mesopotamia.

The Jews celebrate two harvest festivals: Shavuot, the Feast of Weeks in the spring, and Sukkot, the Feast of Booths, which is in the fall.

The most telling stroke of luck the Pilgrims had was in the person of an Indian, Squanto, who introduced himself to them soon after their landing. He never left them until the day of his death, in 1622, and was so won over to the ways of his white friends that, according to Bradford's account, he besought "ye Governour to pray for him, that he might goe to ye Englishmen's God in heaven."

Without him the Pilgrims might never have survived their first winter.

The bitter winter months and inadequate diet took their toll of lives. Forty-seven members of the tiny community were buried in unmarked graves to prevent hostile Indians from knowing the number of dead. A combination of scurvy and pneumonia is thought to have

served as death's scythe in this foreign land. In April, the first governor, John Carver, died at fiftynine years of age. He was succeeded by thirty-two year-old William Bradford who was to continue in that office, with only an occasional break, for more than thirty years.

By most standards, the first harvest was very mediocre. But the only meaningful standard in Plymouth was whether there was enough to survive on. The twenty acres of corn had produced nicely enough, although the six or seven acres planted witi- , English wheat, barley, and peas were a failure. The weekly individual food ration, however, was doubled by an increase of a peck of corn to the previous peck of meal. A holiday was decided upon in the small town.

This first Thanksgiving lasted for three days. Captain Myles Standish paraded his group of soldiers in a series of maneuvers; all except Governor Bradford and Elder William Brewster marched. Blank volleys were fired and bugles sounded. Stool ball, a kind of croquet game, was played. Massasoit, chief of the Wampanoags, was invited and came with ninety braves who competed against the settlers in racing and jumping games. The Indians showed their bow and arrow marksmanship, and the white men exhibited their skill with firearms.

The celebrants are even reputed to have played games of chance.

The menu was extensive and the food abundant. The Indian braves had added five deer to the store of meat already brought in by a fourman shooting party. They had venison, duck, goose, seafood, eels, white bread, corn bread, leeks, watercress, and a variety of greens.

Wild plums and dried berries were served for dessert. The very sweet and strong wine they drank was made from wild grapes. Those other favorites of the modern Thanksgiving, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie, were certainly available in their raw state, but were not listed as part of the meal.

Although turkeys were plentiful, there is no record that they were eaten on this first Thanksgiving holiday. The turkey, according to one doubtful source, is said to have gotten its name from the doctor on Columbus' first voyage, Luis de Torres, who exclaimed "Tukkil" on seeing the unusual fowl for the first time. This is Hebrew for "big bird".

The word "turkey" was familiar to the Pilgrims from their days in England where it meant a guinea fowl. This bird was imported into England by way of Turkey and acquired the name of the country.

The resemblance between the guinea fowl and our native bird caused the latter to be called "turkey".

Benjamin Franklin thought the turkey a better symbol of America than the bald eagle: "The Turkey is a much more respectable Bird, and withal a true original Native of America."

While Thanksgiving Day got off to a glorious start, it could easily have been a one-time celebration. For it was two years before the Pilgrims held aribther. The winte r of 1622-23 did not see such wholesale death as the first one, but a tv ■TOAnonth drought, from mid-May to mid-July, destroyed the meager crops. A day

of fasting and prayer was set and for nine hours the people prayed for relief. Rain fell the next morning.

Shortly after this, Myles Standish, laden with supplies, brought news that the ship Anne was nearing port, carrying as passengers many of the Saints who had returned to Holland from England when the Speedwell proved unseaworthy. For the blessings of supplies and rain and of their friends, the arrival Governor Bradford issued a proclamation naming July 30, 1623, as a day of thanksgiving and prayer.

Records of following Thanksgiving celebrations are rather sporadic. The inhabitants of the Bay Colony in Boston publicly held a day of Thanksgiving on February 22, 1930, when they were replenished with provisions and friends from Europe. The practice of an annual harvest Thanksgiving was adopted locally, and the date, as in ancient societies, was probably dependent on when the crops could be brought in.

From 1644 the New Amsterdam Dutch observed "Thank Days". The first of these was in gratitude for the safe return of their soldiers from a battle with Connecticut Indians.

There are records to the effect that in 1665 in Connecticut the last Wednesday in October was appointed as a Thanksgiving Day "for the blessing of the fruits of the earth and the general health of the plantations".

During the Revolutionary War, when there was greater cohesion between the colonies, the Continental Congress recommended days of Thanksgiving. The return of peace was the object of a day decreed in 1784.

The first national Thanksgiving proclamation was issued by George Washington in 1789, the year of his inauguration. He called for another Thanksgiving Day in 1795, the same year that John Jay, governor of New York, endeavored to have the day observed throughout his state. The ancient problem of co-ordinating the season of the herdsman with the season of the farmer made it difficult for various communities to accept a common date.

Even the men in the presidential office were not of one accord as to the worth of the day. Some merely did not care. President Thomas Jefferson actively condemned it during his two terms. In 1815 President James Madison asked the nation to observe a day of Thanksgiving and peace in remembrance of the War of 1812.

New York, with its substratum of the lively and holiday-conscious Dutch, and with a recent influx of New Englanders, officially adopted the day in 1817. In other states the day continued to be celebrated according to regional preferences. It was still largely a religious observance, and in the early nineteenth century some governors considered it an example of state interference with religion and so avoided it.

On October 3, 1863, President Lincoln issued his Thanksgiving Proclamation, after which Thanksgiving became a national holiday observed on the last Thursday of November.

Officially, each President has, by proclamation, set the Thanksgiving Day date each year, and, with two

10/VPSTNiK—Wednesday, November 16, 1983 exceptions, the last Thursday in November (or the fourth Thursday when there happen to be five in the month) has always been selected.

November 23, the third Thursday, was celebrated as Thanksgiving in 1939 by order of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The reason given for the change was that the store owners wanted to extend the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas to better prepare for and take advantage of the Christmas shopping rush. The following year the third Thursday was also set as Thanksgiving.

The people of the country were not about to let a long-standing custom slip by so easily and the protests were vehement. The fourth Thursday saw as many gobblers roasted as did the third.

A Congressional Joint Resolution in 1941 finally settled the dispute and now Thanksgiving Day is always the fourth Thursday in November. EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 17, Novy Tabor, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed brother WILLIE MUCHA, who died Sunday evening April 10, 1983 in the Burleson County Hospital.

Brother Mucha was born June 30, 1912, in Burleson County, in the New Tabor Community, (the son of John and Julia Macat Mucha). He was a life-time resident of Burleson County. He was a farmer and had worked for John Mrnustik for 20 years on a poultry farm. He later worked for Polansky Super Market in Caldwell for 15 years until his retirement. He made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Willie Hejl until he entered the Leisure Lodge Nursing Home in December 1972.

Brother Mucha was a member of the New Tabor Brethren Church and the SPJST Lodge No. 17 of New Tabor.

Mr. Stavinoha was born in Temple on January 22, 1912, and was a lifelong resident of Temple.

His family was involved in the business community in Temple since 1907. He operated the Stavinoha Hardware Store for 30 years, joining the family business in 1932 after attending St. Edward's University in Austin.

Mr. Stavinoha served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and flew a glider in the Market Garden operation. He was a member of the World War II Glider Pilots Association, the Elks Club, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Knights of Columbus. He was also a past commander and financial officer of American Legion Post 133, and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Mr. Stavinoha was preceded in death by his wife, Rose, in May. He is survived by one son, Robert James Stavinoha of Fort Worth; one daughter, Kathy S. Rives of Temple; two sisters, Martha Wolfe of Dayton, Ohio, and Jonie Byars of Tucson, Arizona, and two grandchildren.

Services were held at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Monsignor Arthur Michalka officiating. Burial was held in Bellwood Memorial Park.

Harper-Talasek Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

The family requested that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society or St. Mary's Catholic Church or School.

Mr. Stavinoha was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 87.

The Travails of a Republic The days of 28th and 30th of October 1918 are of special significance in the history of Czechoslovakia and its people, the Czechs and Slovaks. On October 28th, 1918 an independent Republic Czechoslovak was proclaimed in Praha, while on the 30th of October 1918 the representatives of the Slovak nation meeting on Tureiansky sv. Martin declared for Czechoslovak national unity in the Proclamation.

Based on, above historical events the Paris Conference (Trianon) adjudged and approved on historical rights the boundaries of the Czechoslovak national state.

Subcarpathian Russia voluntarily joined this formation.

The territorial boundaries were not a gift. Over them heavy fighting occurred especially in Southern Slovakia and Subcarpathian Russia.

The Magyars (Hungarians) would not under any circumstances, give up their claim for Southern Slovakia and Subcarpathian Russia. Whether through the regular army, volunteer corps or the bolshevik hordes of Bela Kuhn they staged armed incursions and raids into the land despite the fact that the Peace conference had already fixed the boundaries of the Czechoslovak state. In facing this terror the Slovak soldier stood shoulder to shoulder with his Czech brother, and together with the Sokols, Legionnaires and volunteers defended the historic rights of Slovaks to a territory which for centuries already had been inhabited by their ancestors before the Huns invaded the Danubian basin.

These forerunners of the Hungarians came from Asia and for a thousand years were able through brutal and reckless methods to suppress every Slovak desire for freedom. The First World War offered an opportunity to three outstanding patriots, Masaryk, Stefanik and Bene§, to find a way out of Austro-Hungarian captivity. It was in the last days of October 1918 that the people of Czechoslovakia at long last began to breathe freely.

Gratitude for this attainment of freedom belong primarily to a great American President, Woodrow Wilson.

In Slovakia, after liberation it was necessary to create and build from the foundations up. Czech help was needed. The Hungarian regime neglected and denied the Slovaks

even -In elementary education in their mother tongue. A school system had to be created from elementary grades to universities.

Hundreds of kilometers of roads and railroads were built. Factories, power plants, public and private buildings" were constructed. The Slovaks began to participate in the highest levels in public and government life. But the most precious product of Czechoslovak statehood was freedom and democracy for the guidance of the country. One of the outstanding Slovak politicians, Dr. J. Lettrich appraised the first twenty years of the Czechoslovak Republic in these words: "Slovakia developed from a land which was backward, underdeveloped, culturally and economically suppressed, into a modern highly developed country.

The twenty years of the Czechoslovak Republic are the greatest period in Slovak history."

In 1938 the radicals of Hlinka's Slovak Popular Party (HSLS) following the death of Hlinka and aided by Germans and Hungarians took advantage of Munich and helped in the dissolution of Czechoslovakia. Slovakia lost its most fertile regions. The Slovaks in these regions were persecuted and exiled. Asiatic brutality again surfaced especially when Premier Csaky declared: "A Hungarian which would government participate in attacking Czechoslovakia would face oblivion, and everyone who would hesitate to act would be executed." In the book

by Borsodi there is a declaration: "There will never be a Hungarian government which would acknowledge the Treaty of Trianon boundaries." These are warnings which the Slovaks especially must keep in mind.

After 1938 the Germans in Slovakia systematically were enlarging their sphere of influence.

Overnight hundreds of German schools were opened. Citizens of German origin were demanding special privileges. Against these excessive and foreign made demands a resistance movement arose in the spirit of Masaryk and Stefanik. This movement found its culmination in the Slovak National uprising. Up to 70,000 soldiers and 7,000 partisans, organized mostly in the two Stefanik Slovak brigades, stood up against the Nazi occupants who were invited into the country

by Dr. Tiso and Gen. Catlos to defend the bankrupt politics of the Slovak state.

It was a similarly traitorous force which in the past on its volition or through foreign aid destroyed the Great Moravian Empire. It was a similar force which for a thousand years was trying to eliminate the Slovaks from the face of the earth.

Were it not for the enemy's depravity, and the extermination of people during the Second World War some men would hardly realize how important it, is to preserve the unity between the Czechs and Slovaks. A unity which became of vital importance to both nations after their disastrous experience.

The political and military leaders of the Slovak National Uprising in their Proclamation to the Slovak Nation on September 1, 1944 based the existence of a future relationship between the Slovak and

Czechs on equality, of both in a common state.

The Slovaks in their valiant struggle for a real Czechoslovakia demonstrated their determination and will. And a firm will is more than any pact or promise. With this newer arrangement Czechoslovak unity was not the least disturbed. To the contrary it was fortified into a viable force. This unity will last as long as Hungarian, German and Soviet imperialists remain Czechoslovakia's neighbors.

It is regrettable that today in America, the America which was the godfather of the Czechoslovak Republic a Senator appears among the politicians who play into the hand of Hungarian irredentists and propagates in the Congressional Record a revision of the Treaty of Trianon, without first ascertaining the history of Slovaks and other nationals and their sufferings under Hungarian dominance. How can America expect that Democratic Czechs and Slovaks in today's Czechoslovakia continue resistance against the communists when an American Senator and former candidate for the vice-presidency sponsors such statements to the detriment of Czechoslovakia and peace in the Danubian basin.

It will depend on all Slovaks and Czechs to whatever political party they may belong to get together and create a united front against all such snares and devious methods against the existence of a Republic created by men like Masaryk and Stefanik, or a situation will arise in which our kin will find themselves in a position similar to pre-1918, or post-1938. It is an explicit warning. History beginning with Great Moravia teaches us that Czechs and Slovaks must stand shoulder to shoulder against all such intrigues and destructive plans and realize that unity is the very essence to their continued existence.

during the next five to six weeks will take blood and feather samples, hopefully, from about 200 birds. The research team set up a similar operation last spring when the falcons were on their return flight north.

Some of the birds will be equipped with radio transmitters that will assist airplane pilots in charting the falcon's flight. All of the captured birds will be tagged before' being released.

Because the falcon is at the top of a food chain, living off smaller birds of prey, it is an excellent specimen for studying levels of certain hazardous materials in the environment, including metals and pesticides such as DDT. The head of the team is "especially interested" in the peregrine because of cancer research. He is Dr. Kenton E. Riddle of the University of Texas Systems Cancer Center.

The population of the peregrine falcon — no longer considered an endangered species — has increased possibly as much as 70,000, said Riddle. It had once dwindled to less than 20,000.

Samples now being taken on Padre Island indicate the birds are nearly free of pesticides and other cancer-causing agents as they make their fall migration to the south.

In April, the peregrine falcon will again stop at Padre Island during its return flight to the natural habitats in Alaska, Greenland, Canada and farther into the arctic regions.

But on the return flights, the falcons will likely show greater traces of harmful pesticides, including DDT, which is banned in this hemisphere only in Canada and the United States.

Riddle said there currently is "no concerted effort" among the southern nations to do away with the deadly pesticide. And that bothers him, but he says he guesses it is because "of their economic conditions."

Team member Dr. Evzen Burian — of Czechoslovakia said there is a similar parallel for the peregrine in the eastern hemisphere where DDT has been banned only in Great Britain.

RESEARCH EXAMINES ENVIRONMENT SCIENTISTS AWAIT FALCON ON PADRE ISLAND

He said the birds flying out of the Soviet Union show greater traces of harmful pesticides than those in western Europe.

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — Using inflatable rafts, an Army helicopter and special-drive vehicles to move equipment over the sand flats and across the passes that split Padre Island, the scientists arrived.

The peregrine falcon is a global bird, which migrates thousands of miles in both hemispheres. Riddle said some of the birds will fly from the far reaches of North America to the southernmost countries of South America, and some from northern Europe into Africa.

Then the research team slowly began setting up base camp in a remote spot near Mansfield Inlet on the north side of the barrier island, between the Gulf of Mexico and Laguna Madre.

He said the peregrine probably has chosen Padre Island as its staging ground in the western hemisphere because of its location — about halfway from one point to the other — and because of its • isolation.

They had chosen what is known to be the only staging ground for the peregrine falcon in its migratory flight from the arctic regions of North America into Central and South America.

Elderly persons and those with chronic diseases are at high risk from influenza and should contact their private physicians for recommendations on taking influenza vaccinations in advance of the approaching flu season.

While fall and winter pose a flu threat to everyone, those hardest hit are the elderly and persons of any age who are chronically ill, reports the Texas Department of Health.

Considered at risk are all persons with: heart disease; chronic pulmonary disorders; chronic renal disease, diabetes or other metabolic diseases that increase the risk of infection; chronic, severe anemia such as sickle cell disease; and conditions which compromise the immune mechanism, including certain malignancies and immunosuppressive therapy.

Influenza epidemics are frequently associated with deaths in excess of the number normally expected.

More than 200,000 excess deaths are estimated to have occurred in association with influenza epidemics in the United States during the 1968-1982 period. Last year almost 1,100 Texans ages 65 and over died of pneumonia and influenza. Total deaths in the state for all ages from the two diseases totalled 2,685 persons.

Efforts to reduce the impact of influenza in the United States are aimed at protecting persons at greatest risk of serious illness or death through annual vaccination.

Influenza virus infections occur every year in the United States. The three dominant strains anticipated during the approaching flu season are A/Brazil/78, A/Philippines/82, and B/Singapore/79 viruses. Antigens in this year's vaccine reduce the likelihood of infection to these strains and the severity of disease if a vaccinated individual contracts influenza. Vaccines used in recent years have generally been associated with only a few reactions.

During the 1 9 8 2-8 3 winter, influenza activity occurred at moderate levels in this country. Excess mortality was slightly elevated during the epidemic period starting in January 1983. The viruses implicated as the major cause of nationwide epidemic activity were influenza A (H3N2) strains, which caused nearly all outbreaks in nursing home or hospital settings for which laboratory diagnosis was obtained,:
