Presenting the program will be Thelma Hrncir, SPJST * project coordinator, along with Charles Jenkins, program director, and other supervisors from the Children's Program Services of the Texas Dept. of Human Resources, and Ben * Trcalek, District I director.

All interested SPJST members and community residents * * are invited to the meeting, with a special invitation being ex-* * tended to the Caldwell, Dime Box, Snook, New Tabor, Bryan * * and Warrenton lodges.

Following an explanation of the SPJST's involvement in * * * the project, the Society's film, "Other People's Children" will * be shown. DHR workers will tell of local needs and problems * * and offer various ways interested lodges can become * * * involved in the new project. * A refreshment hour will follow to allow an exchange of * * ideas with the workers. Local arrangements are being * * handled by Faye Gail, Vicki Wine and President Clint Luksa.

Stephen Chudej received his Bachelor of Arts Degree at the Summer Exercises in advertising art, speech and drama Radio/TV Film.

A 1980 graduate from St. John's High School, Mark attended Navarro College transferring, in his sophomore year, to North Texas State University where he served as treasurer of Alpha Epsilon Rho in his Junior year and President in his Senior year. He was the recipient of the Outstanding Cooperative Education Student award and the Outstanding Undergraduate Student in Radio/TV Film award.

Fraternal Societies Adopt New Model Code A new Model Fraternal Code which will be presented before various state legislatures for approval in future years was adopted by representatives of various fraternal benefit insurance societies Wednesday, October 12th at the Denver Hilton Hotel in Denver, Colorado.

The action took place at the 97th Annual Meeting of the National Fraternal Congress of America which began on Sunday October 9th and concluded on the 12th with the election of new NFCA officials including President V.E. "Jean" Farmer, Supreme President of the North American Benefit Association of Port Huron, Michigan, and Vice President Peter Daly, Executive Vice President of the Independent Order of Foresters in Ontario, Canada.

Major provisions in the Code would give fraternals needed flexibility, such as authority to own subsidiary corporations, and to set up separate accounts for offering variable life insurance and variable annuities, according to outgoing NFCA President Edgar J. Martel, National President of Union SaintJean-Baptiste based in Woonsocket, Rhode Island.

The revised Code, however, would maintain key fraternal characteristics including the lodge system, representative form of government and membership as well as elements such as ritual and recognition of part-time agents.

Martel explained that the action was necessary in order for the fraternal organizations to meet the needs of their members for modern insurance products.

The previous Fraternal Code, last revised in 1962, did not clearly permit the establishment of other corporations or provide for variable products which are comparatively new on the market, Martel said.

The NFCA is comprised of 97 fraternal benefit societies which provide life and health insurance to some 11 million North Americans.

These societies have a combined insurance-in-force, as of December 31st, of $68 billion.

Fraternal benefit societies also undertake a wide range of charitable, social, cultural, religious and patriotic activities. Last year alone, $181 million was expended by these societies on various fraternal programs.

Accordirttg to Willtiam Heprinap,

Chairman of the NFCA Law Committee which drafted the Code, "In preparing the new Model Code for fraternals, we were motivated by the needs of our members to have insurance products and other services that meet today's demands.

This Code, when enacted, will provide fraternals with the flexibility to keep up with the rapidly changing financial environment which affects their members as it does all other consumers."

Keynote address at the 97th Annual Meeting was delivered by U.S. Representative Fernand J. St. Germain (D.RI), Chairman of the Banking, Finance, and Urban Affairs Committee.

"Fraternal organizations, with their non-profit, volunteer character of service are part of the true strength of this nation . . . the fiber which holds this country together," he said.

"The millions who freely join these fraternal organizations — "professional volunteers" as Edgar J. Martel describes them — are part of the special strength which lifts this nation high in the world," he added.

"It is a strength which frustrates our enemies who may match us missile for missile in the arms race, but who fall far behind in the race to capture the hearts and minds of the free people of the world," he added.

In making the President's report, Martel, whose 1982-1983 theme has been "Communicate Pride in Fraternalism," said, "As I travelled, I not only spread the good news of fraternalism - I also listened.

"I heard the pride in your voices, as you spoke about the fraternal movement. I heard, too, the concern you have for the system. The fact that you are concerned proves that there is a bright tomorrow and proves also, the need for the National Fraternal Congress of America. Our association of societies may have diverse backgrounds but we speak as one voice."

During the Annual Meeting, the Fraternal Family Life Award was presented to Deloris Kanten, former editor for Lutheran Brotherhood.

She was given the award for her 16 years of promoting honest family values through BOND Magazine.

A large portion of the program which began Monday afternoon, dealt with the conservation of members and insurance. General Session I chairman who led the discussion, was Charles De Vries, Vice President of Communications for Lutheran Brotherhood. General Session I included seven presentors and four panelists. The panelists were: Charles D. Anderson, State Manager, South Carolina, Member of the Board of Directors, Woodmen of the World Life Insurance Society; Tom E. Dyer, Inforce Marketing Officer, Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company; Bartley L. Munson, Vice President and Actuary, Aid Association for Lutherans; and Bruce Piltingsrud, Assistant Vice President — Policy Service, Lutheran Brotherhood.

The presentors included: William B. Foster, President, Modern Woodmen of America; Dolores M. Johnson, National President, National Catholic Society of Foresters; Elmer F. Karasek, President, Western Fraternal Life (Continued on PagA14)1=

Sobania, National Recorder, Loyal Christian Benefit Association; and Joseph Stefka, Supreme President, National Slovak Society.

In his opening remarks, De Vries said, "Loss of members and in-force insurance is plaguing large segments of the fraternal benefit system. These "back door losses" are being addressed in various ways

by NFCA member-societies. The problem of insurance surrenders is also felt throughout the insurance industry. These concerns are especially relevant now as economic and social changes require concerted efforts to conserve insurance and members."

De Vries alluded to a NATIONAL UNDERWRITER article, "How to Cope With Replacement" which outlined six reasons for increased replacements. The reasons were: The policyholder desires more coverage; economic pressures on the policyholder create a need for cash; the policyholder is drawn to new products featuring current interest rates, more flexibility, reduced mortality charges (especially in the case of non-smokers term insurance) and lower expenses charges; economic pressures on the agent lead to increased replacement activity; policyholders become conscious of existing unneeded or uneconomic policies; the initial sale was of poor quality.

De Vries complimented the presentors and panelists as well as the 56 societies participating in the program saying that fraternal societies are on the right track in handling the increase replacement problem.

General Session II highlighted reports from Maury Harris, Senior Vice President, Paine, Webber, Jackson & Curtis, Inc., New York, New York and Christopher Economos, Partner, Ernst & Whinney, Denver, Colorado.

"We in the fraternal insurance field, are uniquely situated to be leaders in the conversion to a different form of management. We are capable of adopting the correct attitude and accompanying management practices. As we do, we will be contributing not only to our wellbeing but to the revitalization of the American business community and to American economic leadership in the world."

Rounding out General Session III was a film on "Love and the Human Potential" by Leo Buscaglia, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Education, University of Southern California, San Diego, California.

Because of Dr. Buscaglia's awareness of life, his basic theory is that love is learned and that it should be shared to develop one's greatest human potential. The film was presented by the Catholic Knights Insurance Society in behalf of Dr. Buscaglia.

Subjects presented at the various section luncheons were as diverse as they were interesting. They ranged from "Telling Your Story Through the Media" presented by Charles De Vries during the Press and Public Relations Luncheon, to the "Role of the President" presented by V.E. "Jean" Farmer, during the President's Luncheon.

Other topics included "Plain Talk Pitfalls" presented by Charles Robison, Consulting Counsel, National Fraternal Congress of America and Lutheran Brotherhood, "Cost Effective Medical Underwriting" by Roger Bush, M.D., Vice President and Medical Director, Security Life of Denver, Denver, Colorado, and "Dynamic Interest Rates Legislation and How it will affect Fraternals" by Robert E. Bruce, Consulting Actuary, Bruce and Bruce Company, Chicago, Illinois during the Field Managers Luncheon.

Newly-elected to the NFCA Board of Directors were Frank Dick, President and Secretary, Gleaner Life Insurance Society; William Heerman, Senior Vice President, Secretary and General Counsel, Aid Association for Lutherans; and Daniel Zornan, President, United Lutheran Society.

During her acceptance speech, V.E. "Jean" Farmer unveiled the 1983-1984 theme "Service Through Fraternalism".

She told the gathering that one of the primary goals of fraternalism is to help our fellow man. The key feature of fraternal societies has always been service, she concluded.

Harris spoke on "Investments and the Economy" and projected short range trends for the near future. He said that typical economy slows in the second year of a recovery such as the United States is now experiencing and that over-all inflation does not accelerate.

Economos gave several helpful hints on personal financial planning and stated that now is the time for a well-developed investment plan without spur-of-the-moment decisions.

Daniel Steininger, President, Catholic Knights Insurance Society, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was the speaker during the General Session III Tuesday morning. His topic was "Adopting a Participative Management Philosophy for a Fraternal Benefit Society".

Steininger said, "The real transformation going on is how we "Be Proud Of It." manage our enterprises, how we treat our people, how we define our PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE values — a total remaking of the American management philosophy embedded since the 19th century.

The SPJST Child Abuse program was presented to Lodge 25 at its last monthly meeting.

The following members volunteered to coordinate lodge activities that would be held for the benefit of this program: Dorothy J. Kudrna, Winnie Whitfill, Pat Zapletal, Kay Kovar and Margaret Krajca. These members will also be the lodge's contact with the Ellis County Child Welfare Department, a division of the Texas Department of Human Resources.

For their first project, Lodge 25 will hold a garage sale Saturday, November 12 at the lodge hall.

Members are asked to bring salable items to the next lodge meeting, Thursday, November 10, or call any of the above members.

Proceeds will benefit the abused and neglected children of Ellis County.

Nov. 6 Meeting

Lodge 4 Announces Nov. 13th Meeting Dear Members: Our lodge met Sunday, October 9, 1983 in the Grant Building at Hallettsville, with Lodge President Frank Zabransky presiding.

Chris and Gary Chudej led the members in the Pledge to the flag.

A Resolution of Sympathy was read for our deceased member, Gladys Ann Matejek.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes form the July and August meetings which were approved after minor corrections.

Correspondence was also read.

President Frank Zabransky recognized Laurie Chudej of our lodge for being awarded an SPJST Scholarship; Laurie's mother, Gaynell Chudej, accepted the $500 check in her behalf. Congratulations to Laurie!

Co-Youth Leader Evelyn- Holy gave a report on the youth club.

Treasurer Helen Zabransky gave a report followed by comments and reports on Family Day which was a success.

Linda Mikush announced that October, November and December birthdays will be honored at the November meeting, also election of officers will be held.

Refund checks were given out and the meeting was adjourned. Games were played. Refreshments and lunch were served.

For Lodge 28, East Bernard Dear Members: It is the season of the year for the time to be changed from Daylight Savings Time to Standard Time. The November meeting for Lodge Karel Jonas, will start at 2 p.m. Central Standard Time in the lodge hall, November 6th. On the agenda, besides the regular reports and business, will be a report on the District VI meeting.

The "Gathering" will be held after the meeting.

The October lodge meeting was held October 2nd. All reports were accepted as given. Plans were made to attend the District VI meeting for the 23rd of October. Brother Lupik, the lodge secretary, urged all who could, should attend. With all this the meeting lasted less than an hour.

There were several door prizes given besides the usual prize given by the lodge. Sister Luquette filled a jar, donated by and lid decorated by Sister Nezval, with candy corn. The members were asked to guess the number of candy corns in the jar as they signed in. Sister Brdecka won the jar of candy with a guess of 326.

The actual count was 327. Sister Nezval donated two jars of plum jelly and a baby rose plant. The jelly was won by Sister Valigura and Brother Anton Kelner, Jr. The baby rose was first won by Brother Lupik, but he declined it and then Sister Sperlik's name was pulled out. The lodge door prize was won by Sister Nezval who, in turn, donated it to theaitehen SpekitillFund.,

Dear Members: October 9th, the meeting of Lodge 35 Elk was called to order by Presi­ dent Henry Breitkreutz. Our meetings are getting smaller. We al­ ways welcome visitors.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to .Mary Beralek and Eddie Banik. The birthday cake was brought by Timmy Pavelka.

Those who had birthdays in September were Rosemarie Banik, Randy Pavelka and Martha Mladenka.

The chairpersons made their re­ ports, namely, Mary Pavelka for the kitchen, Randy Pavelka-refresh­ ments, Randy Pavelka and Steve Dulock- entertainment. Thanks to everyone who helped them. These young people are doing a fine job.

On the sick list was Truman An­ derson who was in the hospital.

Helen Dulock and Mary Beralek are both in Hillcrest Hospital. They will have surgery this week. We hope both of you will recover soon.

October 30th was the District III meeting. I would like to thank every­ one who helped.

Successful Ann. For Lodge 80, Holland Dear Members and Friends of the SPJST: President Bohac called our meeting to order at 2 p.m, Sunday, October 2, 1983.

The members present were asked to stand and recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag. After the pledge the members were asked to remain standing for a moment of silent tribute to our departed members from our lodge.

Roll call of officers showed all present, except Brother Latham who was absent.

Sister Glenda Liles, our financial secretary, read the minutes of the September meeting since Brother Glen Latham, our secretary, was absent. The minutes were accepted as read.

They voted to have regular money bingo at our 20th anniversary celebration, also to have homecooked barbecue beef.

The celebration is now history and it was a success in every way.

The free dance was enjoyed by everyone. We were highly honored to have with us that afternoon the Hrncir family from the Corpus Christi area; Mrs. Hrncir is the District VII director and her husband, Eugene Hrncir is the District VII S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes director. Mrs. Hrncir made a very interesting talk that we all enjoyed listening to, so, I must say our 20th anniversary was enjoyed by all the fine people who came out to be with us Sunday, October 23rd.

For yours truly, it was.especially a memorable evening because the Lodge 80 officers and members presented me with a beautiful plaque that reads; "Presented to Joe Barabas, Jr. in appreciation for many years, a loyal, and dedicated Service. Presented by SPJST Lodge No. 80 - October 1983."

It was with heartfelt gratitude that I accepted this beautiful plaque.

Once, again, I want to thank the officers and members for this nice token and the honor that you bestowed upon me. I will cherish this the rest of my life.

Lodge No. 88, Houston Dear Brothers and Sisters: The October monthly meeting was called to order by President Larry Pflughaupt at 7:30 p.m.

October 17, 1983. Brother Vincent Hegwood presented the colors and led the members in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

The members stood in respect for the following departed brothers and sisters: Albert Lindsey Brown, Emil Frank Filipp, Donald M. Franks, Hubert Henry Jakubik, Marie Koci and Earl R. McSpadden, Sr. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.

Correspondence was read and acknowledged.

Youth Leader Linda Wehring reported on past and upcoming youth activities.

Favorable financial reports were presented on behalf of the various committees.

Sister Evelyn Vornsand reported for the Choral Club and thanked all who participated in their performance at the State Fair in Dallas. She thanked the membership for allowing the group to attend this function. The Choral Club will perform Czech Day October 23.

Brother James Hutchinson reported on behalf of the Concert Orchestra and announced their upcoming performances, including Czech Day. Sister Pearl Hanka reported on behalf of the Birthday Club Sisters and presented a brief history of their group.

Entertainment Committee Chairman Homer Alexander reported on upcoming activities and asked that members interested in attending the New Year's Eve dance to make their reservations by the end of November.

Brother Ed Miculka reported for the Men's Club and stated that the group had worked on cleaning the debris left by Hurricane Alicia, repairing casters on chairs and working on the floor in the dining area and halls. He thanked· Sister Estelle Kelly for working on the flower beds.

Brother Willie Wehring announced that the Blue Room Christmas Party will be held December 4. tickets will be on sale for $10per person.

Brother A. J. Stayton reported on recent actions taken by the Board of Trustees during September.

Brother Harry Rice announced that the Rules & Regulations Committee will meet October 26 at 7:30 p.m. Additional changes to the R&R's have been submitted for consideration at the annual meeting.

Brother Tim Kostom reported for the History Committee and stated that the books are being bound.

Sister Mary Kosut reported on the amount of charity work performed by lodge members during the months of August and September.

District V President Tillie Helmcamp reported on the successful District Family Day and thanked the members who attended and appreciated the help of the members who took part.

Members reported on the sick list were Betty Bravenec, Frank Tymel and Judy Ehler.

The list of new applicants and social members was read. A motion was made and seconded to accept the new applicants and social members. Such motion passed.

President Pflughaupt announced that initiation of new members would take place in the November meeting.

The following members were elected by acclamation to serve on the screening committee for the election of delegates: Ellen Miculka, Doris Knapick and Millie Manaek.

Sister Mary Tilich read the list of birthday celebrants and anniversaries. Door prize winners were Millie Manack, Victor Janak and Agnes Pederson. The Liberty Savings door prize winner was Geraldine Hlozek. Refreshment donors were Janet and Alvin Raymond, Mary and Johnny Kosut and Mike and Kathy Trefell.

Annual Meeting For Lodge 133 San Antonio Lodge 133 held its monthly meeting October 16 at 1505 S. Gevers Street. President Matula opened the meeting at 2 p.m. There were thirty-one members present.

The minutes of the previous month were read and the treasurer's report was also given; there were no corrections and the reports were accepted.

Gevers Street. All members of Dis­ trict VII were reminded to bring two covered dishes; the rest of the food was to be furnished by Lodge 133. We had wished for a good turn out. The fall meeting was planned to be a social gathering.

President Emil Matula of Lodge 133 is checking his records for the many activities planned for the lodge in the future.

Lodge 133 members voted to have a Thanksgiving Dinner which will be served at our regular meeting for November 20th; serving begins at 12:30 p.m., followed by our regular meeting. The Social Committee requested that members bring a covered dish.

The November meeting is one of the most important meetings because we will be electing dele­ gates to the convention and also have election of new officers for the next year. It could be that your idea may not sound too important, but when you place it with someone else's idea, it could develop into a very important matter.

Lodge 154, Ft. Worth Meets Nov. 13 Dear Members and Friends: Czech Day at the State Fair is behind us and I hear it was a great day; nothing but praise. I was sorry to have missed it because Benny wasn't up to par.

We are enjoying some beautiful weather and finally got a nice rain.

We are happy Brother Bobby and Sister Carolyn Cleveland arrived home safely Saturday from their trip to Hawaii and Australia; a bit weary, but they enjoyed it.

Brother Bill and Sister Mary Renfro left yesterday for a few days in San Antonio.

We extend our get-well wishes to some of our young members, Chris Peaton who just got out of the hospital with a bout of pneumonia, and Christina and David Harrison.

Our heartfelt sympathy to the families of Sister Agnes Hejl who died Saturday, October 15, and our Sisters: Georgia Mihelich of Chicago, Illinois, and Marry Elizabeth Phillips of Houston, Texas and Brother Johnnie Becan of Lodge 84, Dallas on the loss of their mother, Sophie Becan. May they rest in eternal peace.

We all extend our congratulations to Brother Al and Sister Alene Kercho of Lodge 92 who will be celebrating their silver anniversary, Sunday.

I hope we have nice weather for the District III meeting Sunday and then try and get back in time for the anniversary celebration.

Mollie was too ill to be with us so Brother Schiller lead us in a prayer for her intention with hope that she will recover from this recent affliction as she has done in the recent past months.

Mollie is now back home and husband, Brother Harvey, is caring for her physical needs. Get well quickly Mollie! We love you!

Benefit Dance At Lodge 180, Burleson The meeting was called to order

by Vice President Joe Hurtik.

After roll call of officers, the minutes from the previous meeting were read by Secretary Francis Simmank. The minutes were approved as read.

Well, with a successful 5th anniversary behind us, we are busy getting on with the preparations for our Christmas dinner; this affair will be held December 4, with sister Lodges 92, 154 and 183 to be held at Lodge 180. More about this event next time.

We are having a Benefit Dance November 13 for the SPJST DHR. We would like to see a big turnout for this occasion. The money from this dance will be spent in Johnson and Tarrant Counties for neglected and abused children. Each member who works that day will be donating his or her time the bands are also donating their time, also the guards.

The bands who will be performing are: Wayne Martin from 5 to 6 p.m., Rambin' Rhythm from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m., The Country Junction from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., and Rhythm Reunion from 8:45 to 10 p.m. The doors will open at 4 p.m.; the admission will be $6 per person. The kitchen will be open for short orders. Bring your own bottle or beer; the ice, coke and sprite will be free, so come on out and spend an evening with friends and at the same time help some neglected or abused child.

On the sick list for September was Rick Smajstrla. We heard that he is up and feeling better. I saw Earney Cathy at the dance October 1st and he told this reporter that he had knee surgery a couple of months ago, then poor Earney broke his collarbone; he is having to take it easy for a while.

It was good to see some old familiar faces at the October 1st dance, along with some new faces.

Everyone seemed to have been having a good time, so come on out and see how many faces you can recognize in the ocean of faces.

The Lodge 180 members wish to extend their Congratulations to Delenda Durbin and Daniel W. Holmes who became Mr. and Mrs., October 22nd. May they have a long and happy life together and may all their problems be small ones.

The next Saturday night dance will be with the Country Junction Band. Let's see a lot more new faces along with the old familiar ones; the admission will be $6 per person; children under 12 years of age will be admitted free.

A "Child and Abuse/Neglect" Program will be presented at the SPJST Lodge 186 at Caldwell on Highway 36 South.

The usual meeting will start at 1 p.m. instead of 2 p.m. because Sister Thelma Hrncir, District VII director, who is the SPJST's State coordinator for this program will be present to discuss various important topics pertaining to the child abuse program, therefore, we suggest all the District I lodge representatives try to make an effort to attend this serious undertaking Sunday, November 13 at 1 p.m. Let's have a large turnout from all our lodges.

Lodge 88 News Our annual Czech Day held Sunday, October 23 was a successful event being an all-day affair with a beautiful day of sunny skies to enjoy the activities on our beautiful picnic grounds, spotted with all kinds of booths, people milling around, and music from the Gazebo floating through the air.

The tasty menu of turkey with dressing and all the trimmings was prepared by many willing members under the guidance of our Kitchen Chef, John Hilsher. All the guests enjoyed a most delicious Sunday dinner from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Birthday Club Sisters, as usual., attended to the heavy, loaded,

donated pastry table in the dining room. Many thanks to our faithful pastry donors, you really were generous! Thanks.

The Ballroom program began with the Czech Concert Orchestra and the Choral Club Singers, both of Lodge 88; then, the Houston Sokol unit performed, followed by the Youth Club Beseda Dancers and, at 5 p.m., the famous Parade of Czech costumes was a beautiful sight to see; about 200 took part, and, after that, the Vrazel Band led the guests in dancing until 9 p.m. to a packed house.

Gus and Ann Urbanovsky enjoyed a wonderful 13-day tour of the New England Fall Foliage Tour. During their trip they experienced wonderful and unforgettable moments seeing the picturesque scenery. The highlight of their tour was the "Honeymooner's Paradise," the Niagara Falls. After dinner at the Parasonic Tower, they proceeded to the top of the Skyline Tower to view the spectacular falls from the American and the Canadian side under colored floodlights; the thundering falls will be a wonderful memory. They saw the Waltzing Water Show and, at the Great Island, the raging rapids and the Adirondack Mountains with the beautiful countryside with foliage in vivid colors. The ferry took them across the lake to spend the night in In Massachusetts.

Burlington, Boston, Massachusetts all interesting places were pointed out to them by a local guide and in New York, again, visited all the interesting places pointed out by their guide. Their trip took them over 4,519 miles. Gus was one of the winners on the trip to guess the mileage made on this tour.

I was surprised and sorry to hear that Sister Anna Hruska passed away Wednesday, October 12, 1983 and was laid to rest Thursday, October 13 at 10:30 a.m. in the Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery in Conroe, Texas, with the Rev. James Long officiating. (Sister Anna Hruska, before she left Houston, was one of our devoted Birthday Club Sisters for many years. Anna transferred her membership from Lodge 88 to Lodge 47, Temple to live with her daughter Evelyn Johnson.

Later they moved to Conroe where Anna passed away.) Survivors include daughters, Evelyn H. Johnson of Conroe, Loraine Kunz of Willis, and Ann Savage of Troy; a brother and sister in Czechoslovakia; and grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. Sincere sympathy to the family of Anna Hruska, Mr. Lee Hegwood, father of our (popcornman) King Hegwood, was in the Beaumont Hospital for surgery.

Helen, his daughter-in-law, spent several days to comfort him.

Johnnie Kopenitz also was confined to undergo surgery and we missed him at our regular Thursday night socials for three times, but he is back in his regular place accompanied by his lovely wife; it's good to see you back!

To enjoy the Hawaiian Islands, Herbert and Emma Jarisch, took a vacation leaving October 15 and returned October 22nd. From here they flew to Dallas and boarded the American-line and had to land in Los Angeles fore repairs which took 9 hours, arrived in Hawaii'and boarded the S.S. Independence Ship to

6/VESTNiK—Wednesday, November 2,1983 cruise the five islands. On the plane they made friends with Helen Wood who is also a Lodge 88 member and knows many of Herbert's and Emma's friends. They are home now and catching up on their sleep.

The Men's Club of Lodge 88 is functioning successfully for the benefit of our lodge, which is appreciated. They meet once a month and extend their helping hand wherever needed. They have their breakfast and meeting and, if time, they enjoy the get-together.

Sisters Skotak and Nesuda will furnish our spirits as they have been so graciously doing before.

If you plan on bringing any guests, please let the Vrla family know so that they can prepare for any extras.

New Business — Anne Zvolanek had programs on the Czech Day at the State Fair. Bessie Reames announced the Fraternal Council meeting which will be sponsored by the W.O.W. Suzanne Novak spoke to us about the Czech costumes of our people here and in Czechoslovakia.

Anne Zvolanek showed films taken on their visit in Czechoslovakia; very interesting and beautiful scenes were viewed.

She explained the various places shown. Thank you, Anne, for a nice presentation.

Sister Skotak brought remnants for us to purchase.

Tom and Elline O'Brien (daughter of Sister Libby Slovak) left for Germany Monday, October 3rd where they will buy a new car (Mercedes). They will stay three weeks and travel on to Switzerland, Monte Carlo, Monico, Venice, Italy and Austria and then back to Germany and returning home October 21st.

Bertha Malik recently toured the Orient visiting South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong and the Philipines.

Jerry and Vickie Kohn went to Grand Junction, Colorado to attend the Army Reunion thirty-eight years after Jerry's discharge from the 2nd Armored Signal Battalion, Co. "B". They plan to attend another reunion in Houston, Texas next year.

Celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary September 11th, Alice and Tom Roberts were honored with

a reception at their home by their children. They also visited South Texas and visited their son, Sam, in San Antonio.

Dorothy and George Reznik celebrated their 33rd wedding anniversary by going out to dinner at the Bohemian Restaurant. While there they were treated to two bottles of champagne by Sister Floy Pokladnik and husband, Joe, who were also dining at the restaurant with their family.

It was an unexpected treat indeed! It was nice to see Sister Pokladnik out enjoying herself after being under the weather recently.

Georgia Johnson, daughter of Dorothy Reznik, was honored with a Baby Shower Sunday, October 23rd.

If you didn't come out to the Czech Day at the Fair this year you really missed out on a lot of fun! Many outof-state visitors were in attendance this year, including my aunts from San Francisco, California and several nice folks from Nebraska; I had the pleasure of visiting with them. This year the Czech Day was dedicated to the late John Bubak who was indeed a person very deserving of this honor. John loved working with the Czech people and did it not for recognition but because he truly enjoyed the gathering of Czechs from all over the various communities to promote their Czech culture.

Our next meeting will be November 3rd. Until then, do enjoy the beautiful harvest season and start planning that Thanksgiving Dinner!

SVPS Chapter 9 To Meet Dear Members: This is a reminder to urge all of you to attend the next meeting of the Salvonic Mutual Fire Insurance Association Chapter No. 9 of Fort Worth, which will be held Sunday, November 6 at 2 p.m. at the Sokol Hall, 6500 Boat Club Road.

The officers and committees will give their reports of the business which has been transacted since the last meeting.

There will be election of officers and committees for the coming year so it is important that all of you try to be there.

The ladies are asked to please bring pastries to go with the meal which is provided by the local chapter.

It was nice to see so many of our friends at the 45th anniversary of the Opening of the hall at SPJST Lodge 92. All the lodges from the surrounding area were represented as well as persons from as far away as Seymour. Everyone had a good time. The officers and members of Lodge 92 thank you for helping them celebrate their anniversary.

I am hoping to see you at the meeting November 6th. Carl and I were unable to attend the last meeting because of previous plans but we hope to make this one.

To All Fraternal Brothers & Sisters Of This Order Since the General Election date is November 8th for this off year, many members do not take the time to use their right to vote. This year, though, there are eleven proposed changes to the Texas Constitution.

Several are being pushed through that will cause a lot of problems to the Senior Citizens and their families. This writer urges all members who are registered voters to go to their polling place and VOTE!! DO NOT let your vote be flushed into oblivion. DO NOT let your freedom to be legislated away.

This writer has some points to bring out on four (4) of these proposals.

First off, I recommend that all vote FOR the 8th proposition. This could help many of our lodges for laws could be passed to exempt Veteran and Fraternal organizations from state Ad Valorem Taxation (Property Tax).

This writer knows of one fraternal in two counties that enjoys this privilege. Who knows they may get the same privilege in many other counties. Remember the old saying "What is good for the goose, is good for the gander."

Second, Proposition No. 2 limits the size and value of an urban homestead. It would allow a value of only $10,000 and standard lot size only. This would hurt many of our Senior Citizens who are on a fixed income. When property values would go up, the citizen would pay more tax. This writer suggests: VOTE AGAINST THIS ONE! Third, Proposition No. 6: A Garnishment Law to enforce court ordered child support. This proposition is not written clear enough and could set a precedent for other garnishment laws. Besides those who this law is designed to make pay usually DO NOT work for a company at a regular job and many get lost into oblivion by moving around. Vote AGAINST this one, too!

Fourth, Proposition No. 10: This proposition would allow a city or town to place a lien against one's property when new sanitation sewers would be put in. This proposition is so fouled up, the devil himself would go "nuts." The person who wrote this up and got the legislators to pass it, is making it very easy for some city or town to steal someone's home. The people who support this are mostly in Real Estate and make it sound that this would help the Senior Citizen. The way it is written, it WILL NOT! It is, as this writer said before, a license to steal. I suggest: Vote AGAINST this one, also!

This writer suggests that those other propositions be read and if not understood: VOTE AGAINST THEM! This will give our representatives a message to write them more clearly.

Seaton Choral Club News

Seaton Choral Club Singers at Czech Day at State Fair in Dallas.

October 16th was Czech Day at the State Fair of Texas and the Seaton Choral Club sang in the Band Shell. Those singing were: Dorothy Morris, Lillian and Frank Mikulec, Otto Hanus, Martha Klusacek, Dorothy Pechal, Frank and Eleonora Spanhel, Vallie and Leon Zavodny, Ann Krcha, Jerry Urubek, Della Psencik, Annie Jakubec, song leader, and Ralph Milek, accompanist. They were joined in singing by Gladys Kovar, Pauline Kopecky, Della Fojtasek, Libbie Jansky, Mary and Bill Hegar.

The Choral Club was joined in making the bus trip by Sara Wilson, Carol Marek, Eugene and Ann Hejl, Vallie and J. D. Chlapek, Evelyn and Robert Heese, Irene and Preston Pagel, Helen and Tom Merka, Frances and Arnold Pechal, Michael and Cynthia Pechal, Joe Zvolanek, Binnie and Raymond Mikeska,

Rosemarie and Jerome Orsag, Evelyn Puckett, Betty Peck, Marguarete and Tom Gibson, Tommy and Laura Gibson, and Lillian and Wilson Malcik. More money was collected from the passengers than was required for the fare, therefore, the passengers voted to donate the $66.48 to the Choral Club in appreciation for arranging the bus trip. They all appreciated the safe driving of Lloyd Boettcher that allowed them to enjoy the beautiful Czech singing, good fellowship and refreshments.

Otto Hanus, long-time faithful member of the Club, was selected King of the Czechs and was presented with a beautiful trophy.

He, also, was the one who made the song books and the signs which were used to decorate the bus.

Conversational Czech Classes At ACC

SPJST Members Tour Czechoslovakia

The Conversational Czech class at Alvin Community College has been in progress since September 12 with Mr. John Karas as the instructor.

The class will conclude November 7.

Mr. Karas is most thorough and is certainly a very conscientious instructor, therefore, the class is understandably appreciative of his earnest efforts.

The class will participate in the Hallo'ween Carnival held every year at the college. In their booth they have various Czech pastries including the ever favorite kola-ee.

The proceeds from this booth are used for scholarships for deserving students attending Alvin Community College.

At the conclusion of this semester, the students agree it has been a most fruitful one and are eagerly awaiting to continue their studies of the Czech language January 23rd.

Mary and Charlie Stehno of Louise and Emma Waligura of Garwood have returned from a tour of Czechoslovakia. They were met at the airport by three cousins who were their special guides.

They visited the beautiful Baroque and Gothic Cathedrals, Infant Prague, St. Vita, St. Barbora, walked up to Kutna Hora, Konopiste Castle, Hradcany, Strahov, Monastery, and the Bohemian Arts Museum is unrivaled.

The Gilded spires, steeples created a dazzling backdrop for this brilliant Baroque Capital interspersed with Romansque and Gothic monuments. We also viewed the Charles Bridge, passed old Town Hall, Wenceslaus Square, National Museum, clock on the old Town Hall which each hour presents Christ and the twelve Apostles.

Jaroslava Jansava, popular soprana and second cousin, performed several nights at the Convention Center that evening and she sang American pop songs.

Saturday, October 29, our lodge planned a Fall Festival or Halloween Party.There were game booths, such as, a haunted house, ring toss, fortune teller, face painting and a jail planned which started at 5 p.m.; a supper, that ended at 8:30 p.m., was included. We also had a dance afterwards from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m., with music by the Moods. Many people came out to enjoy the fun and who weren't scared. Good-bye for now!

HALLOWEEN ACTIVITIES ENJOYED BY LODGE 79 YC Dear Vestnik Readers, Lodge 79 Youth Club in Corpus Christi had its meeting Friday, October 14, 1983.

We had ten members and one guest present. The guest was Michele Morris who was brought by Tammy Rambo.

During the meeting we talked about learning the Beseda dance for our Christmas Program. We will have practice every Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the SPJST — Sokol Hall.

Mrs. Majek encouraged the kids to do this month's Vestnik project for extra points.

The door prize was drawn and won by Trey Rambo.

After the meeting we had a Halloween Party that was so much fun. We were blind-folded and had to draw a pumpkin. The best one was drawn by Michele Morris. We also guessed jelly beans in a jar and that was won by Cheryl Majek. We then played a bat game and bobbed for apples. After the games we had delicious snacks.

Our next meeting will be held on the second Friday of the month; so we hope to see you there. Next month we will have a Skating Party and we will let you know the date.

SEATON YOUTH CLUB NEWS The October meeting of Lodge 47 Youth Club was called to order October 2nd at 2 p.m. by President Shana Patterson.

The Pledge of Allegiance and Club Motto were led by James Billeck.

There were nine members and three guests present at the meeting.

Our youth club congratulated Shana Patterson for winning SPJST State Queen, and we are very proud of her.

The social for this month was going to Prarie Dell Lake Amusement Park, October 23rd. We were asked to meet there at 1 p.m. and stay until 5 p.m. We also used the District II Skating Party for a social.

There were two birthdays this month; they were for Daryl Kortis and Billy Joe Billeck.

Door prizes were won by Daryl Kortis—junior and Shana Patterson, teen; each of them received a $2.00 door prize.

Dear Vestnik Readers, Lodge 188 of Centerville had a meeting October 16, 1983 at 2:30 p.m. There were twenty-five people present at the meeting.

Susan Skrabanek, the District I youth counselor, came and explained the rules, the point system, and a lot of other things.

There were also two other visitors.

The scavenger hunt was a lot of fun too, but the team I was on lost.

Our next meeting will be in November. We had refreshments after the scavenger hunt.

Brother Kubitza was born in Elk, Texas and had farmed there many years. He was active in the lodge during this time. He later moved to Waco where he was employed with Owens-Illinois until he retired.

He married Mary Pavelka 24 December 1921.

Pallbearers were Fred Kubitza, Jr., A. J. (Tony) Pavelka, Charlie Pavelka, Eldon Pavelka, Eldon Pavelka, Jr., and Calvin Thompson.

Lange-Westerberg Wedding Sandra Leigh Lange and Thomas Edwin Westerberg were married Friday evening, October 7, 1983 at the First Methodist Church in Salado.

A reception was held the following day at SPJST Lodge 80 in Holland, Texas.

Parents of the bride and groom are Mr. and Mrs. Clarence C. Lange (members of Lodge 80), and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas H. Westerberg, all of Salado, Texas.

The groom is also a graduate of Salado High School and is attending Texas A&M University.

The bride is the granddaughter of Henry G. Balusek of Holland who is also a member of Lodge 80.

Finally, mother consented to let me go to Houston and take up sewing and live with their childless friends Mr. and Mrs. Svacina in Gottage Grove. Frances went the same time and we both roomed together. She was employed by the Telephone Co. when the riot broke out in the fifth ward. I was at the dance at Lodge 88 on Studewood and she was supposed to meet me to go home with, but she was detained to operate the switchboard and could not get off until the danger was over. I had no date, but a friend was kind and saw me safely home on the streetcar. Frank also came to Houston and was employed, with the recommendation of Mr. Frank Rachac, at the exclusive furniture store of "STOWERS" on Fannin Street. Frank and Frances got married in June 1921 and still live here in Houston. They reared a son, Dr. Henry Dvorak, and daughter, Elsie Kadera, a talented singer and now teaching piano. They are endowed with eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is a fine artist and painted many beautiful pictures in his life including a wall-size mural of "HRADCANY", the Czechoslovak President's Castle in Prague. This he painted as a gift for the opening of the new home of Pokrok SPJST Lodge No. 88 built in 1965. Besides the mural, two large-framed pictures of famous castles in Czechoslovakia adorn the walls of the barroom. Even now, once in a while, he loves to brush the paint on canvas and create his dreams. In his life, he did many good deeds.

Employed for 42 years by the exclusive Stowers Furniture Store here in Houston, first as a repair and finisher and later promoted to manager of the finishing department and held this position until his retirement in 1963. Being retired, he built a work shop where he repaired, built new furniture and frames for his pictures and did all the finishing.

Frank and his wife, Frances, both were active in the Choral Club and Frank portrayed many characters on our stage with the Hlahol Dramatic Club through the years.

They are still interested, but only from the sideline. Frank reached the age of 86 in October 1983.

Vlada, the oldest a talented musician, composed music and played all instruments, organized his band and directed one until his death. His favorite records were by the famous Sousa Band; he loved marches. Soon after the war in 1918 he took off to roam the United States working his way to a place he would like and that was Oregon. He settled in Albany and married Salbina Kukacka and reared one daughter, Dorothy. Vlada never came back to Texas to live. With his wife he came for a visit (the second time when our father died in 1940).

He was ,employed as a lumberjack and later promoted to foreman in the lumber mill and died in that capacity. All through his lift he loved music and with his band

played at.dances almost to the end of his life. His second hobby was creating wooden inlaid pictures of different wood, for these he held many prizes and ribbons at shows and fairs. Each one of us received one of these beautiful inlaid pictures. Frank and I are the only ones to have these pictures in our possession yet and treasure them and will keep them to our last breath. Vlada was 61 years old when he died of cancer in 1955.

John was the only one who never was much interested in playing an instrument, much less in the band.

In 1913 he was employed by Mrs. Johana Polak (Dvorak) as a farm hand and fell in love with her daughter, Janie, and later courting her by driving a bugboard and riding a horse from Rosenberg to East Bernard. This always upset father when there was work to be done in the field and John would come home in the early hours of the morning and go to the field, yawning. In 1919 they were married and lived in Rosenberg where John was employed by Mr. Robinowtz in his General Merchandise Store for two years. They were blessed with a son named, Stanley, who died at the age of two here in Houston. Here in Houston, John was employed as a clerk by Mr. Louis Rulik in his famous delicatessen located in the old City Hall Market. After a few years he changed to carpenter work and became a skilled cabinet maker.

They reared two daughters, Helen Champion and Irene Graham. John developed leukemia and was under the doctor's care for two years when he succumbed to this treacherous disease in 1954 at the age of 59.

Janie, his wife, is still living, residing in our S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II in Needville, Tx. Joe is the only one who stayed with our parents on the farm, even when they finally bought a fortyacre farm in Iowa Colony, Tx. in 1928. Joe also was a musician and, at one time, had a band and Rudy the youngest played with him at dances around the country. Joe devoted his life to farming and married Albina Krampota; they reared a son, Joe, Jr. and one daughter, Janette. Joe passed away at the age of 74 in 1977.

His wife is also deceased; she died in 1979.

Rudolf the baby, grew up to be a fine musician and, at one time, ventured on a cross-country tour with a band hoping to come back, famous and rich, with huge diamonds in his cuff links, but those were only dreams that did burst like a bubble. I was married then and had two boys when he came back about after one year on the road, carrying his battered suitcase, broke and a very disillusioned young man.

To come home, he rode the rails and slept in box cars. He finally buried his dreams and slowly recuperated.

Our two boys just idolized him and loved to have him around. He turned to painting and paper-hanging jobs and became a good reliable painting and paper-hanging contractor. He married Angelina Planka of Iowa Colony, Tx. and they had three children, a son, Tommy, and two daughters, Carol and Angie. He became seriously ill with cancer.

While ill he never gave up-, always saying: "I know I will get well and will be all right." While he was

getting thinner and thinner by the day and, at the end, before your eyes lay a skeleton, and we agreed with him and he would smile and a treacherous spell would cease him and we felt that was the last. Those were hard times to take, knowing three children will be here without a father. Angie never married and reared her children by herself. Rudy died at the age of 53 in 1958.

I was the only girl among five brothers and I assure you, not spoiled.

At that time I was taught to cook, wash, iron, patch worn clothing and the most hated by me, to pick up after my brothers and they all were pretty bad, and I was reminded that this is women's work. (Believe me, when I raised my boys they knew better; nobody had to pick up after theml) I was not quite fifteen when mother was rushed to Houston to have an emergency operation in St. Joseph Hospital and was gone for two weeks. During that time I had to take the household over and when mother was well, again, she would rather go to the field and leave the household to me to clean and cook sometimes for ten or more people to be fed at noon, (which meant at noon and not later!) They came at noon, ate and rested an hour and went back to the field, again. In the

morning when all went to work, I would wash the dishes, make the beds and sweep the floors, bring in the firewoodand boil water to dress the chickens to be cookedfor dinner, including the vegetables and have everything ready for the workers to sit down and eat. The only satisfaction I had was I was not expected in the field only an hour or two in the afternoon (what a breakl) No matter how busy the field work was, mother always wanted the house clean and I was the one to do it because mother much rather worked in the field and then do housework. And this routine was my daily job. I wanted to learn so much, but my schooling was very poor; a five mile walk to schoolin Richmond after milking five cows wouldn't have been so bad, but missing out a week or two in horrible winter weather, and then trying to catch up with the rest of the class? I might say I am a fair cookand a good seam­ stress and, for this, I came to Houston and took sewing with one of the nicest ladies I ever knew. I stayed with her over two years and learned how to make patterns and finishing and stitching. During that time I stayed with Mr. and Mrs. Svacina; they were like my parents, always helpful. If it would be today I am sure my life would have turned out different, but I have no regrets.

The first time I was on the stage at Lodge 88 was for a NEW YEAR'S EVE midnight scene in 1919 and ever since I performed in many Clech stage plays. And one thing is sure: Frank and I were the first and the last ever to get married on our Lodge 88 stage with three hundred guests present. Before the wedding it rained the whole solid week and the Saturday of the wedding scheduled for 5 p.m., the water was everywhere. Louis Hanus, ten years old, could tell some stories; he was very important in helping the guests through the rain. The weather was terrible and it still rained late in the afternoon March 25, 1922,but, like a miracle, all of a sudden it stopped and when Frank was placing the

ring on my finger the sunshine of the setting sun crossed the stage when Judge Campbell pronounced us man and wife. This, I will never forget as long as I live. I was married to Frank 48 years when he passed away at the age of70 January 13,1970.

Now,I have my two devoted sons, Structural Engineer, Henry F. Olexa, married to Della Little and reared two daughters, Sharon Ains­ worth and Angie Stegner; younger son, Architect Erwin R. Olexa, married Doris Kuhn; they reared one daughter, Katy Steinman, and five sons, William, Michael, Frank, Robert and Jeffrey. I am proud of my eight lovely great-grandchil­ dren. After all these years, I am devoted to my Lodge No. 88 and will be to my dying day. I love my family, my many friends and treasure them with all my heart.

Mother was thirty-six years old when they arrived in America; she had a sensitive nature and under­ standing; she worked very hard all her life. When all of us children were gone and married, she and father would look forward to Sundays for some of us to come and spend the day with them. Later when mother got older, we girls would not let her cook; we would take over the kitchen and made her rest. Of course, she would have pans of kolachein the pantry that she baked Saturday and the grandchildren (eight of them) had a ball and still remember those days out in the country at grandmas! On week nights, by lamplight, father would read out loud to mother while she crocheted bedspreads, tablecloths, doilies and windowcurtains. Mother never had bought curtains for their house; they always were handmade.

I still have, on my windows, glass

curtains she made; that was the last item she made before she died and they are still like new; I get a lot of compliments from neighbors and friends and they are twenty-five years old.

When father died she stayed on the farm in a small house Joe had built for her. A few years later she came to Houston to live with son, Frank, and daughter-in-law, Frances, in her own one-room and kitchen that Frank and John added on to their home. Mother lived there several years and, finally, wanted to go to Hillje, Tx. to live in the nursing home. She was there only two weeks when she got ill and had to be placed in the El Campo Hospital where she passed away after one week at the age of 86 in 1961.

Father was forty-three years old when they arrived in America. He was the happy type; if he had any worries he would not show it, only a sign of grey hair appeared on his temples. To this day, I am sure if father would have chosen city life and used his skill in shoe-makingand repairing, the future of the Dvorak family would have been successful, but father was tired of city life and was longingfor freedom and country life, and farming was a struggle for him, but he loved farm life and tried hard to gain knowledge by experience which took time and he never showed disappointment.

When mother would get in a bad mood, he never would argue with her; he would take his cap and out he went to the field or to the corn crib · to shuck corn. On rainy days he would say: "Come on Fando (my nick name) let's play cards," and, of course, I was very willing to drop everything and shuffle cards, which

made mother furious and accuse father that he was ruining me. He never complained and he loved company and was a perfect host and loved to sing. On warm nights we would all be on the porch and the whole family would sing with the neighbors listening. The only time my parents would leave the farm when we had a Czech play here in Houston at Lodge No. 88. These outings were their only outside recreation and they always were looking forward to these plays and the dance afterwards. Mother did not dance much but father just loved it and he was a great dancer, tall and handsome, too!When I think back he reminded me ofbrother, Frank.

Father really never was seriously sick, only the seven or eight months before his death, he started to complain about indigestion; visits to the doctor came more frequent and finally the pains became unbearable and an operation was scheduled. When surgery was performed it showed the liver was all eaten up by cancer. I will never forget the last night in the hospital; we all surrounded his hospital bed not knowing that was the last time we would see him alive. Father was so cheerful and, that night, at 2 a.m. we were notified by the hospital that father passed away. Later his doctor told us that father knew that he will not be with us, anymore, but he made him promise not to tell us, that he knew. Father was 73 when he died in 1940. .The other two couples who immigrated to America with us the same time stayed in East Bernard just a short time and decided for Houston, Tx. where they established their homes.

44 Apparently, some insurance companies assume bigness will be the key to their survival.

In our opinion, that's a faulty assumption.

Witness the dinosaur. Being big didn't save him. In fact, it probably hastened his demise.

For the dinosaur grew too large for his limited brain. As a result, signals took too long to get from one part of the body to another. In the end, he simply couldn't respond quickly enough to change.

The real issue — then and now — is flexibility. Adapting to a changing, often confusing, environment.
