Letter to the Editor Czech Films Festival In Houston To All Friends and Moviegoers in Houston and the Surrounding Areas: The first Czechoslovak Film Festival will be in Houston from October 28th through November 3, 1983.

There will be fourteen different movies in Czech with English subtitles. Two different films will be shown each day starting at 4:30 p.m. during the week and Saturday and Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Admission is $2.50 for afternoons and $4.50 for evenings. There is plenty of freevalidated parking next to the theater at Greenway 3 located at Highway 59 and Buffalo Speedway in Houston, next to the Summit.

You will be entertained and will have a good time at every one of these films. Czechoslovak art is world renowned and at many film festivals Czechoslovakia won first prizes.

Inform your friends and avail yourselves of this opportunity. Ex-

THE MYSTERIOUS CASTLE IN THE CARPATHIANS (Tajemstvi hradu v Karpatech) A former opera singer, Count Teleke, decides to go on a trip to the Carpathian Kingdom hoping to be able to forget his beloved fiancee --Salsa Verde, the beautiful singer who has been kidnapped. She disappeared suddenly after her last performance under very strange circumstances. The Count finds a wounded man, the forester, Vilja Deczi, in the woods and has him carried down to the village. In the local pub he overhears stories about a terryfying castle, the home of Baron Gore. Teleke takes careful note of this Gore had pursued Salsa, appearing at every performance she gave and was the cause of her heartattack on the very day when he kidnapped her. Teleke and Vilja set out for the castle and they meet with a strange welcome. Professor Orfanik's inventions enable Gorc to check on Teleke's investitions and on every step he takes. Gore imprisons Teleke and Vilia and with great enjoyment watches their reactions to all the investitions which surround them. Gorc agrees to let the count see Salsa while resting, but Teleke is not allowed- to say a single word to her. Teleke and Vilja have of course no idea that the Baron aided by Orfanik has an ingenious plan for destroying the castle. The new explosive has to be tested. Gore is astounded by the power of the test-explosion. But when the Count finds out that the pressure has broken Salsa's glass (Continued on_Page 101_

[131VVII'6 )(( District VII Director's Report Dear Readers: Delegates and representatives of over eighty fraternal benefit societies attended the National Fraternal Congress held at the Denver Hilton Inn, October 9th through 12th, 1983.

The representation covered twenty states, the District of Columbia, and one Canadian Province and has in excess of 90% of the total insurance in force and membership of the entire Fraternal Benefit System.

Our SPJST, even though one of the smaller ones in amount of insurance in force and members, was well-represented by three officers and four directors; namely, Vice President Gebala, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Legal Advisor Kacir and Directors Trcalek, F'okladnik, Broz, and Hrncir. They showed everyone in attendance, about 700 total number, that they are concerned dedicated board members who are ever-watchful over the interests of the SPJST and supportive of its involvement in larger groups such as the NFCA. The theme of the Congress was "Communicate Pride In Fraternalism" and was the 97th such annual meeting of the body.

The sessions were held in a business-like fashion with even the noon luncheons being used as a time of exchanging ideas and learning of new developments in the fraternal

benefit business. Those attending were allowed to choose various luncheon meetings chosen to one's interest or job in the local societies.

Outstanding speakers, specialists from various professions, spoke on such topics as Investments and the Economy, Conservation of members and insurance, Personal Financial Planning, Adopting a Participative Management Philosophy For a Fraternal Benefit Society , and Love and The Human Potential.

At the final session, the guest speaker was the Honorable Fernand J. St. Germain of Rhode Island, chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Banking. At one of the evening socials, the Air Force Academy Band presented the "Moods In Blue" with a musical program which was both entertaining and patriotic.

Our Society is well-represented on the National Fraternal Congress of America by two of our Supreme Lodge members who serve as officers in various sections; namely, Brother Pokladnik, who served as president of the Texas Fraternal Congress and was also this group's representative at the meeting, was elected an officer on the Press and Public Relations Committee. He was also the guest speaker at the State Fraternal Congresses luncheon and spoke on "Youth Activities in Texas." Brother Gebala was elected Secretary/Treasurer of the Fraternal Section.

With much gratitude, I thank the members of our Society for allowing me this opportunity to attend this National Fraternal Congress and feel confident the experience will help me serve you members better as a member of the Supreme Lodge.

SPJST District VII Family Day (Oct. 30, 1983) Dear Brothers and Sisters: Those of you who attended the last District VII meeting in Floresville will, I am sure, recognize that it was the best meeting, the most attended and the most with participants that many remember. I attribute this to each and everyone of you, be it small lodge in membership or large. The interest at the district level is growing and I predict will continue to grow because your voices are heard, action on your suggestions and opinions are discussed.

The results of your interest in one of the subjects brought up in our meetings over the past year is having a District Family Day (social) rather than a full meeting.

The plan is as follows: the event is hosted by Lodge 133 San Antonio; it will be held at Comanche Park No. 3, at 2600 Rigsby Ave. (in case of rain 1505 Gevers St.): the park opens at 10:00 a.m. and dinner will be served at 12:30 p.m. Note: Lodge will furnish the meat and bread.

Members and guests are asked to bring a vegetable and a dessert.

I urge everyone to attend this event and bring your guest if you like; this is also an occasion to show the public what we experience in fraternalism.

I challenge each lodge president in District VII to attend and, in return, you challenge my giving a special treat to the one that has the most members in attendance at the event---Oct. 30, 1983.

Lodge 13 Elects New Youth Leader Dear Members: Our last monthly meeting was held at approximately 2 p.m.

October 16, 1983. Vice President Patti Tylacka called the meeting to order due to the absence of President Claude Flippen.

The recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag was then held. Following the pledge we had the roll call of officers with 7 present and 6 absent Sister Dorothy Rackel read the secretary's minutes and the treasurer's report due to the absence of Treasurer Sister Doris Baker. Both reports were accepted as read.

For old business a discussion was held on electing a new youth club leader. Mrs. Marlene Strong had to resign due to job complications that required more of her time. A motion was made that Mrs. Nellene Spacek take over as the youth club leader.

She has been the former youth club leader three years ago and she did such an outstanding job with the youth club that everyone thought she would be the perfect choice.

After much discussion, Mrs. Nellene Spacek decided to accept the position of youth leader with Mrs. Marie Spitzenberger and Mrs. Monica Spacek being her assistants.

Under new business, we had Mrs. Carole Dismukes and Mrs. Jenny Gold to come and ask permission for the hall. This would be for the Homecoming Celebration Dance that is annually a street dance in downtown Dime Box. But after many complaints from people the Homecoming Committee decided, if it were possible, to use the hall. There would be certain requirements for the usage and they were also reminded about the possible problems that could take place. After much discussion between Mrs. Dismukes, Mrs. Gold, and the members of Lodge No. 13 Dime Box, a decision was made that the lodge leave it up to the Board of Trustees to make the final decision and that we would let Mrs. Gold and Mrs. Dismukes know at a later date.

After all old and new business topics were discussed, the door prizes were drawn: 1st — Patti Tylacka, 2nd — Lee Flippen, 3rd — Lucille Leitko.

Vice President Patti Tylacka then adjourned the meeting.

The next monthly meeting will be the third Sunday, November 20, 1983; this monthly meeting of the lodge will elect new officers for the new year, and the meeting will start at 1 p.m. I hope to see you all there.

Lodge 176 Annual Meeting Dear Brothers and Sisters: As your president of Lodge 176 of Houston Northwest, I would like to invite all of you members to our annual lodge meeting which will be held Wednesday, November 9, 1983 at 7 p.m., at my home on 10126 Moorberry Lane in Houston.

We will serve a meal and all we ask of you to please bring a covered vegetable or salad dish.

The meetings are a necessary part of any organization and I would encourage your attendance at this meeting, because we need your ideas, talents and participation to keep our lodge active; an active lodge requires an active membership, passing the word around about SPJST insurance and its benefits.

Lodge 177 Plans Christmas Party President Tomastik called our October 12, 1983 meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. and then led the members present in the Pledge to our flag.

Secretary Dorothy Lisenbe read the minutes from our September 14, 1983 meeting and they were approved as read. She also read a list of new members who we want to welcome to our lodge.

The Cedar Ridge Campfire Council sent a thank you letter for the donation our lodge made to them and extended an invitation for members of our lodge to use their facilities. Along with this letter, a thank you note from Texas Bank was also read. Secretary Dorothy Lisenbe read a letter from the Supreme Lodge advising us to elect a delegate for the convention.

Reports from chairpersons were all excellent.

Vice President Walter Jezek gave the trustees' report. His report was indeed a shock to most members. To say the very least: two of our very hard-working people, since about one year or so after the lodge was opened, the Board of Trustees decided were no longer needed in their capacity as bar and kitchen chairmen. Wilbert Ramm (bar chairman) and Juanita Ramm (kitchen chairman) were released from their chairmanship while Wilbert Ramm was in the hospital.

Brother Bill Hutka certainly gave a very nice tribute to these very fine people for all the hard work they have done and their devotion to the lodge. If at anytime they could not be there, they always made sure there was plenty of help and someone in charge.

We, as members of Lodge 177 at Academy, owe them a great big thank you for all they have contributed in every aspect of the smooth running of the bar and kitchen; it will be very, very hard indeed to replace them.

Youth Leader Ann Tomastik gave a report on the Child Abuse Program. She and Sister Othene Jezek went to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Miller who are in charge of the program. All members are concerned for these abused children and decided to invite them to our lodge Christmas Party. With this decided upon, all members are asked to bring a gift (gift wrapped to our Christmas Party).

December 23, the Pecos Band of Waco will play at our lodge. The band is great, so come on down!

Nov. Meeting/Supper Set For Lodge 179 Dear Members and Guests: A fine group was present to enjoy the delectable chicken stew and a great variety of delicious desserts Thursday night, October 13 when the lodge held its regular monthly meeting.

President Harold Bergmann opened the business session by leading the group in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

Jeanette Schoenst read the minutes of the previous meeting, correspondence, and handed out the refund checks. Lee Leonhardt gave the treasurer's report. Both readings were accepted as given.

The mortuary report was read by Arnold Peters.

A transfer was given to Brother Wayne Walthers to Rowena Lodge 49.

There was a brief discussion concerning a tour to some place of interest to majority of members.

The tour is tabled until the spring.

Election was held to elect a delegate and substitute for the XXIV SPJST Convention in June 18-20 at Corpus Christi. Arnold Peters is the delegate, Lydia Peters is the first alternate and Edith Pfeiffer is second alternate.

President Bergmann reminded members that November is election of officers of our lodge for 1984.

He also thanked the stew Cooking Committee composed of El Gene Eckermann, Harold Bergmann and Garda Siptak, and any others who assisted for a job well done.

The November 10th regular meeting will also include the Thanksgiving supper consisting of turkey and dressing furnished by our lodge, and members to bring a side dish or dessert to help complete the menu. It will be held in the former Warrenton Hall Kitchen at 7 p.m.

The meeting was adjourned; then members enjoyed good fellowship, refreshments and food.

Up-To-Date News From Lodge 183, Mid-Cities Dear Members: A reminder to all members that the District III meeting will be held October 30th at Elk with Lodge 35 hosting the meeting; all of you wishing to attend make your plans early. Several Lodge 183 members are planning to attend the wedding of Carla Roznos and Steven Ray Matush at West on the 29th and spend the night in a motel and go to the District III meeting Sunday.

Gracie and I are looking to a great weekend of fun and fraternalism, and would like to take this time to say congratulations and best wishes to the bride and groom.

Sunday, October 9th four members of Lodge 183 attended the 45th anniversary of Lodge 92. Those attending were Inez Greenlees, Juanita Cote, Gracie and Norman Kneschk. We met with so many of our friends from Lodges 92, 154, and 180; the music was great and I even won one of the door prizes. Lodge 183 would like to thank all of the hard-working people who made the great event possible.

Just an early reminder that our next dance will be November 12th with the Shamrocks (country/western) band playing; please call one of the officers before coming to see if the new lodge is ready. Perhaps we can succeed if all of the material arrives and the City of Arlington approves the work, Success. If you have tried to do something and failed, you are vastly better off than if you have tried to do nothing and succeeded, so keep in touch for the next dance.

One item that will be seen on stage when the new lodge opens will be an old upright piano donated to the lodge by Gracie Kneschk. The piano has been in Gracie's family for many years and Gracie felt that it would be the best place to keep the piano for your enjoyment.

Sunday, November 13th at 6:30 p.m. will be the next regular lodge meeting of Lodge 183. Remember, members, this is the month that an election committee will be elected to help select the officers for the year 1984. If you wish a change in leadership, you need to be present at the next two meetings because in the December meeting the new officers will be elected. This is the one time of the year you can voice your opinion as to whom you wish to lead the lodge activities for the coming year, but you have to be there to vote. Let's have a large crowd for the next two meetings; by being there you can achieve great things. Achievement: The man who rows the boat generally doesn't have time to rock it.

Remember, also, December 4th is the upcoming second annual Christmas Party for Lodges 92, 154, 180 and 183 that will be held this year at Lodge 180 in Burleson.

Everyone plan to attend this one and make it even greater than the one that was held last year at Lodge 92. Goodwill is the one and only asset that competition cannot undersell or destroy.

Lodge 187 Schedules Ann. Celebration The regularly scheduled meeting for Lodge 187 at Round Rock was held Sunday, October 16th. Everyone was in for a real treat because the youth club sponsored a "Sock Hop." Members of other District II youth clubs were in attendance.

The monthly meeting was called to order by President Oman at 4 p.m.

After the Pledge to the flag everyone was asked to sign in on our attendance list.

President Oman recognized two vistors from our sister lodge in Elgin, namely, Mrs. DePew and Mrs. Young.

Roll call of officers showed all present, except Wilbert Nelson, Leila Gainer and Ed Volek.

Minutes of the last monthly meeting were read and approved as were the minutes of the Board meeting.

Discussion was held regarding putting floor covering in the kitchen area.

The Nominating Committee made its report to the membership. We encourage all members to attend our November meeting to meet the candidates for officers, board and committees; this will be our election of officers and board, also; so please make it a point to be there Sunday, November 20, 1983 at 4 p.m. A covered dish meal will be enjoyed after the meeting.

Saturday, November 5 will be our general Cleanup Day. We want to get our lodge really spiffed up for the holidays. We plan on starting at 8 a.m.; come, bring your cleaning rags and happy spirit! See you on the 5th at 8 a.m.!

Sunday, November 13, we are planning our annual anniversary celebration. We will commence with a meal at 12:30 p.m. with the lodge providing turkey and dressing with gravy. Members are asked to bring vegetables, salad and/or dessert.

After the meal, a social time where we can play dominoes, cards, etc., will be enjoyed followed by a dance at 3 p.m. Mark your calendar for Sunday, November 13 at 12:30 p.m.

Seaton Choral Club News The songs were mellow and sweet as the Seaton Choral Club met in practice session in preparation for their appearance at the Czech Day at the State Fair of Texas. In the absence of Henry Janacek, Ralph Milek (a former member) accompanied the club singers. Those singing were Lillian and Frank Mikulec, Otto Hanus, Dorothy Pechal, Thelma Batosh, Dorothy Morris, Eleanora Spanhel, Anne Krcha, Jerry Urubek, Mary Holick, Della Psencik, Martha Klusacek, Frank V. Spanhel, Leon and Vallie Zavodny and Annie Jakubec, our song leader. Gladys Kovar, a former member, sang with us. Anne Krch's guests were Mr. and Mrs. Joe Simek of Houston. Evelyn Hesse often sings with us and always enjoys our singing.

The business meeting, which followed, was conducted by Dorothy Morris, president, and concerned details for the bus trip to Dallas.

Birthday cards were sent to Sisters Frances Olexa, Mildred Holeman, Mary Kosut and Doris Knapick. Sisters who were on the sick list were Virginia Hale who had eye surgery, Florena Taake who had foot surgery and Elsie Colcott was ill; also Brother Kadera was ill.

The sisters who donated food were Mary Kosut (meat), Mary Johnson (pickles), and Geraldine Hlozek (potatoes and chips). Thanks go to Brother Mike Trefell who helped these ladies in the kitchen.

Dear Members and Friends, This is a reminder of our family night Thanksgiving dinner Thursday, November 3rd., instead of Wednesday, November 2nd. Due to conflicting activities in the, new St. Thomas parish hall, the evening dinner had to be changed to a Thursday. A turkey dinner and all its trimmings will be served at 5:30 p.m. Non-members are invited, but there will be a nominal charge of $2.50 for adults and $1.25 for children up to 12 years of age.

Some lucky person or persons will be winners of a patch quilt and a napkin grandma doll; the drawing of the tickets will be held at this dinner.

We wish to express our congratulations to Al and Alene Kercho, who will celebrate their silver wedding anniversary with their family and friends, October 30, 1983.

Several of our members helped in some capacity to make the 43rd American-Czech Day at the State Fair in Dallas yesterday (Oct. 16th.) another success.

Mrs. Christina Zernanek, mother of Mrs. Libbie Pavelka of Dallas, age 91 years and 10 months was Czech Queen of the Day. She was presented a lovely trophy and corsage for being the oldest lady present.

The Czech King of the day was Brother Otto Hanus, curator of the Library, Archives and Museum in Temple, Texas; he is 83 years of age, and he, too, was presented a trophy.

Mr. and Mrs. Tom Adamek of Dallas, SPJST No. 24, members of Cyclone, Texas, had the honor of being the longest-married couple, 52 years. They also were presented a lovely trophy.

Our members who took part in the Dallas State Fair Ciech Day are members of SPJST, SOKOL, KJT, KJZT, RVOS and SMFIA. The choral groups from Lincoln, Nebraska, Seaton Star Hall and Lodge No. 88 Houston gave excellent performances. The Dallas Czech Orchestra and the Houston Czech Concert Orchestra performed magnificently. The various programs presented are an undivided effort to perpetuate our Czech heritage and customs. All those who participated and others who contributed by volunteering their labor or who just made the effort to be part of the audience are to be congratulated. Needless to say, everyone gained by being present at the pleasant warm, sunny day at the Fair.

The 1984 State YAD (including Royalty) is set for Sunday, August 12, 1984, to commence at 10:30 a.m., at Temple High School. The noon meal will be catered; resume YAD early in the afternoon. We plan to finish by 5. — NAM. *** ' STATE YAD — 1984 To All Concerned: I had previously announced that the 1984 State YAD (including Royalty) was tentatively set for Sunday, August 19th.

In a recent communication from the Temple ISD Business Office, we were requested that, if possible, to schedule this event a little earlier next year. The custodial staff was in somewhat of a bind this year because they had to work into the night to get everything cleaned and ready for an all-day in-service training program for the Temple ISD faculty the next morning.

Therefore, to accommodate our good friends at Temple High School, we are scheduling the 1984 State YAD one week earlier — namely, Sunday, August 12th. As I stated previously, we will most likely start the day's activities around 10:30

a.m., take an hour for lunch and resume early in the afternoon.

This might crowd us a little with the end of camps, but we will do the best we can. The earlier date might also be better for our youth who had to start to school the day after our YAD this year. We still plan to finish by 5 p.m. — NAM. ***

From the District Youth Counselors SUCCESSFUL DISTRICT II SKATING PARTY The results of our skating party were great but the attendance was down. We had 98 skaters and about 20 leaders and parents. LODGE 39 BRYAN YOUTH CLUB ENJOYS ACTIVITIES Dear Readers: We are now well into the youth year and time is rapidly passing us by. Our youth club has been kept busy by many activities and projects. The month of July marked our bowling party at Pooh's Park and rehearsals for State YAD. The highlight of August was a swimming party at the Texas A&M Annex. The day proved loads of fun with outdoor games, water relays, and pie-eating contests, concluding with a potluck supper. Our charity project for the month was donating toilet articles to the Women's Shelter at the Twin City Mission in Bryan. We collected 67 items in all, which were deeply appreciated by the shelter.

At State YAD in Temple, August 22nd, three of our youth entered craft and talent. Congratulations to Jennifer Kubin and Brian Faust for winning first place on their dance to "Pink Shoe Laces", to Jennifer for winning second place on Foods, and to Denise Holubec for winning in Hobby Kits at district and being able to represent our district at State. We are privileged to have such talents in our club.

September 17th, we went on an Educational Tour of Feathercrest Farms in Kurten. Along with some interesting insights came a terrible odor! However, the day was fun ending with a treat at the Dairy Queen. For our September charity project, we donated money to the Jerry Lewis Labor Day Muscular Dystrophy Telethon.

October 8th, our youth held a bake & craft sale at the Post Oak Mall in College Station. We profit $340.20.

A terrific example of everyone

Eight. Bryan youth members took an educational tour of Feathercrest Farms in Kurten, September 17th. working together! A BIG thank-you to all who so generously donated both craft and baked goods, and to all youth who so willingly worked selling and handing out brochures.

We couldn't have had a big success without you. THANKS, AGAIN! Our October charity project was a donation to the National Arthritis Foundation.

October 30th, from 3-5 p.m., our club will have their Halloween Carnival at the lodge home. All District I is invited to attend.

Admission and booths, and the spookhouse will be free of charge.

We will have a 250 cake and prize walk for those wishing to win some cakes and larger prizes. Last year's carnival turned out great and we are hoping for the same this year so

young or old — come one, come all and have a great time with us! Wear your costume -- we will have a costume contest! All ladies from our lodge are asked to donate cakes for our cake walk. Thanks!

At our October 9th meeting, the youth planned a wiener roast and hayride for November 5th beginning at 2:30 p.m. All youth will meet at Diane Luza's house on Elaine Drive in Bryan and hayride out to the country where we will enjoy a camp fire, camp songs, games, and contests; it sure sounds like fun so plan to be there.

I have generally outlined our upcoming events and activities for several months: October 30th-3 to 5 p.m.

Halloween Carnival for District I to be held at our lodge home on Hwy. 21 West November 5th-2:30 p.m.

Wiener Roast and Hayride November 13th-2:30 p.m.

Regular Meeting, Craft, and Charity Project (to be announced later) December 10th Lodge Christmas Party. Youth will have a program, exchange gifts, and receive perfect attendance trophies.

The youth club of Lodge 117 Robstown held their monthly meeting Saturday, October 15, 1983 from 2 to 3 p.m., followed by a bowling trip to Ayers Bowling Lanes.

The meeting was called to order

by President Edwin McDonald and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all.

Reports were made of the past activities such as the Bayfest '83 Bowling and Shriner's Circus.

There was a good attendance at the meeting; a birthday party was held after the meeting. The honorees were Kathryn Marek, assistant youth leader, Edwin McDonald and Joe Landin. A bowling trip is always exciting because there is a bowling contest held. The winners were Laura Landin, Joe Landin, Angie Hrncir and Donald Marek.

By the time this is published our Halloween Party and Costume Contest probably will be in the past.

The youth clubbers will visit Haunted Houses in the area. Several youth clubbers are planning to attend the District VII meeting and Family Day, October 30th.

The Newletter Committee met October 16th and these are some of the activities planned: November 5—Bake sale at Model Market, proceeds will be used for a trip to Astroworld.

November 12 —Meeting and Christmas tree ornaments will be made and donated to the Corpus Christi State School; also food items will be collected and given to the Department of Human Resources; collecting Campbell labels for Dos Mundos Day School Inc. November 26 —Movie trip, also gaily wrapped gifts to be given to the S.P.J.S.T. We had 21 members and Brother Ben Trcalek present at the meeting.

Under old business we had everyone stand and tell what they got at the County Fair.

We are planning to have a dance at the hall October 28th, from 8 to 11 p.m. Everyone is invited to come, bring along your friends and parents. We suggest that you wear your costume if you wish.

Dear Members: Our last monthly meeting was held Sunday, October 16, 1983 at 4:30 p.m. President Pam Spitzenberger called the meeting to order.

Flag Bearer Jennifer Gold led the youth club in the Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag.

For roll call we had approximately 26 members present at our meeting, with three of these being visitors.

We had a large majority of adults present at the meeting to help prepare for our October meeting activity.

Secretary Tami Krenek read the minutes of the September meeting.

With no corrections or additions, her minutes were approved and accepted as read.

Lisa Langham, treasurer, read the treasurer's report of bills paid during the previous months. The

report was also approved and accepted as read.

Under old business the Dance Committee composed of Pam Spitzenberger, Lisa Langharn and Barry Gold have decided to postpone the dance originally discussed to have in October or November until the beginning of 1984.

For new business the youth club discussed about our December meeting at which we will have a Christmas Program and Buffet-Style Meal for the public on the third Sunday in December. The youth club will have a program consisting of a nativity scene, and a play; the play will be decided at the committee meeting, consisting of all teenagers from 15 to 18 years of age and the youth club leaders.

The youth club gave a special thanks to those who had donated items or certificates to the youth club. They are Mr. and Mrs. Claude Flippin, Mr. and Mrs. Ronnie Langham, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Gold and Dougie Abshire for helping out the youth club.

The door prize winners were Russell Spacek, Curtis Siptek and Sebrina Mikulen.

After the meeting the youth club and visitors had a great time on a hayride and wiener roast which was a great success.

Our next monthly meeting will be at 3 p.m. November 20th. The month's activity will be a movie entitled "Downtown Saturday Night." I hope to see you all there!

We discussed our plans for the Halloween Carnival which will be October 30, at 3 p.m. We also hope to see everyone out from all the other clubs.

Our craft for the day was making terrariums out of baby food jars.

Our Youth Leader Renea Macik congratulated us for doing a great job at our bazaar booth which we had in the Post Oak Mall this past Saturday. We sold almost everything that was donated to us and made a lot of money for our youth club. We want to say thankyou to everyone who donated something to us.

At our next meeting we will be collecting food basket items to be donated to the Twin City Mission for

Thanksgiving, so don't forget to bring something to the next meeting.

We talked about going to the Shrine Circus as a group and also about doing a project for either the Nursing Home or Children's Hospital.

Mrs. Kay Majek then told us all how many points we had so far.

We then talked about the drawing we will have at our Christmas Program.

The door prize was then drawn and won by Stephen Rebecek.

COSTUME PARTY SET FOR LODGE 177 YC Dear Readers, The Academy SPJST Youth Club met October 12, 1983. We had twenty-two people present.

We planned a costume party for October 30th. There will be prizes given for several different costumes; each member is asked to bring a bag of candy. We will call the First House to see if some of the children may come.

We turned in our orders from our fund raising book and only one order was turned in.

Ten members went to the District II Skating Party.

September 25th we had a Taco and Nacho Party and thirty-two people came to have a lot of fun.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge Karnes No. 93 of Hobson, Texas in behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge sister JESUSA V. QUINTERO, of Karnes City, Texas, who died 8 September 1983 in Karnes City Hospital, Karnes City, Texas at the age of 78 years, 6 months and 2 days.

Sister Quintero was born in Kenedy, Texas 6 March 1905 where she attended schools and lived until she married Felipe Quintero, Sr. in 1921. To this union seven children were born. After their marriage, she and her husband lived near Helena, Texas, where they had been engaged in farming. In 1945 they moved to Barnes City, Texas, where Mr. Quintero died five years later.

Sister Quintero was a devoted mother and grandmother who dedicated her life to her family and her church. She worked long hours as a domestic to enable her children to complete high school, and in later

years took care of their children to help free their parents for better employment.

Sister Quintero was a member of the SPJST and Guadalupanas.

Survivors include three sons, Jesus Quintero of Dilley, Felipe Quintero, Jr. of Karnes City and Noe Quintero of Gregory; two daughters, Mrs. Consuela Valdez of Corpus Christi and Mrs. Mary Helen Garcia of Karnes City; 21 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at St. Cornelius Church in Karnes City September 11th at 2 p.m., with Rev. Lambert Bily officiating. Interment was in Karnes City Cemetery under the direction and arrangement of Rhodes Funeral Home.

Resolution Committee: L. F. Pustejovsky Dorothy Pustejovsky Marcellus Kotara -SPJSTEXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 88, on behalf of the entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of E. F. FILIPP 75, who died Saturday, October 8, 1983, in a local nursing home. He was a member of Houston Brethren Church, the Sheet Metal Workers International Association Local No. 54, Western Faternal Life Association, Sokol Houston, SPJST Lodge No. 88, and R.V.O.S. Mr. Filipp had been a Houston resident for 50 years and was retired from the Houston Independent School District.

His survivors are: daughter, Carolyn Francine Filipp of Houston; sister, Emilie Entricht of El Campo; several nieces and nephews, greatnieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services were held at 12 noon Tuesday, October 11, 1983, at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Chapel with Rev. Roland Chupik and Rev. Henry Beseda officiating.

Interment was at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery.

Tillie Helmcamp Gladys Havemann Florena Taake -SPJST EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned officers, in behalf of all the members of Lodge No. 32, Victoria, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of FANNY F. HOLY, who passed away September 17, 1983 at a local hospital following a long illness.

Sister Holy was born November 26, 1899, in Victoria County to Czech pioneers, Tomas and Anna Vitek Janota. She was a member of the Baptist church. She was a member of Lodge No. 32 for 55 years as was her husband, Louis, who passed away September 25, 1967.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday September 19, at the Colonial Funeral Home with the Rev. J. V. Helms officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery in Victoria, Texas. Two of her grandsons, Duane and Bobby Hox-

worth, sang three of her favorite songs at the service.

Survivors include two daughters, Leona Drozd of Rockport and Bernice Aiken of West Columbia; two sons, Edwin Holy and Leonard Holy, both of Victoria; a sister, Annie Smejkal of Victoria; a brother, Henry Janota of Victoria; 11 grandchildren ard 10 greatgrandchildren.

Pallbearers were Ray Meyer, Michael Meyer, Terry Holy, Robin Holy, Duane Hoxworth and Bobby Hoxworth.

Brother Srubar was born 7 May 1914 in Massey and had lived in Abbott area most of his life. He was a farmer. He married Elfie Mikeska 12 April 1948.

Brother Srubar was a member of SPJST Lodge 54, and of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Abbott.

Survivors include his widow: Elfie of Abbott; one son, Albert Srubar, Jr. of Denton; four daughters, Mrs. Albert (Barbara) Olsovsky of West, Mrs. Edward (Helen) Kubala of West and Irene Srubar and Anna Mae Srubar both of Abbott; two granddaughters; four brothers, John Srubar and Joe Srubar both of Abbott, Frank Srubar of Dallas and Roman Srubar of West; one sister, Ms. Mary Srubar of Dallas; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers included Patrick Srubar, James Srubar, Frankie Kucera, Albin Kucera, Jerry Wayne Brezina and Thomas Surovik.

Mr. Stefka had lived in Temple since 1924. He was in the grocery business for more than 40 years and was a member of First Lutheran Church. He married the former Cecilia Janota, June 10, 1929.

Brother Pavlas was born June 2, 1895 in Fayette County, Texas and was a resident of the West-Abbott area for 66 years. He was a farmer, carpenter, butcher and a cattle buyer. His wife, Lillian preceded him in death in 1967.

Brother Pavlas was a member of SPJST Lodge 6 Cottonwood.

Survivors include a son, Alfred Pavlas of West; four daughters, Mrs. Edwin Vrana and Mrs. Joe Zahirniak both of West, Mrs. R. E. Sharp, Jr. of Bellmead and Mrs. Herbert Bonge of Indianapolis; three brothers, Victor Pavlas of Abbott, Frank Pavlas of West and Joe Pavlas of Wichita Falls; two sisters, Mollie Kocian of West; 14 grandchildren, and 15 greatgrandchildren.

The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore a formal gown designed by Biljoy of New York. It featured full bishop sleeves of chiffonette appliqued with Chantilly lace. Chantilly lace covered the fitted bodice which was dotted with seed pearls and accented with a

wedding band collar. The skirt of chiffonette had a panel of Chantilly inset on the front skirt and was bordered by Chantilly at the hem. A small bow of chiffonette topped the chapel length train. The bride carried a bouquet of gardenias, white roses, and babies' breath.

For her daughter's wedding, Mrs. Rosenthal chose a formal mauve chiffon. Mrs. Pospichal was wearing a blue pleated chiffon formal.

Before the ceremony, the bride and groom sang "You Make Me Feel Brand New" accompanied by Joe Felix.

The bride attended Texas Christian University. She is a musician and has played the piano and sang professionally since she was ten years old. She has performed in Ted Mack's Amateur Hour, Fort Worth, New Orleans, Houston, and Las Vegas. The groom attended North Texas State University, TCJC, and is currently attending the University of Texas in Arlington. He formerly performed in an Air Force Band for four years.

They are residing in Fort Worth where both are currently providing entertainment at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.

He tells his wife he is going to make a bit of extra money playing his fiddle in different bars. And he starts his rounds of wine-cellars and taverns. The game is to appear smartly at the side of the person who is ready to pay his bill, pocket the money and vanish. The dailies soon carry reports on the unknown phantom frequenting Prague restaurants, adding warnings to restaurant personnel and diners out.

But Dalibor is never caught, in fact he is beginning to do well in other towns. And yet, the Phantoms days are numbered. Mrs. Douchova, Dalibor's assistant, suspects the boss she adores is the man wanted by the,police. She, begs him to give up trafficking in, crime. But it is too late. An envious neighbor, Pal. izek sets the police on Dalibor's trail.

Vrana has to serve time -- in prison there will be time to think things over and even learn to play that violin, while realizing that when he comes out he must earn an honest living.

ONDRA LYSOHORSKY, BARD OF SILESIA

Born in Frydek on the Ostravica, I pick among the branChes of our galaxy the fruit of ultimate human knowledge: respect for life.

Appalled I watch how throughout human history the one-day tyrants' reply • to the poet-rebels who understand the meaning of that fruit has been the gag, sneers, calumny, prison bars and death.

But for all time to come the poets will never cease to reach out for this most precious of all fruits and bear it before them like a monstrance: the heart, the meaning of the universe.

AUTOBIOGRAPHY AND UNIVERSE, 1965 Located between the regions of Moravia and Silesia in modern-day Czechoslovakia are the Beskyd Mountains. The highest peak of the Beskyds is Lysa, Hora, the Bald Mountain. Lysa flora is a symbol of the cruel natural environment and stark poverty of the region. It was from the summit of Lysa Hora that Ondra§, the 18th century Silesian Robin Hood and folk hero conducted his battles with the authorities. In the early decades of the twentieth century a young poet named Ervin Goy created the pen-name Ondra Lysohorsky from the names of these two regional symbols, Ondra§ and Lysa", Hora. Ondra Lysohorsky grew to become the most eloquent voice of his native region of Lasko and at the same time evolved into a literary figure of world importance.

Ondra Lysohorsky was born in Frydek in 1905, the ninth son of an impoverished miner. He grew up in poverty. At an early age Lysohorsky was aware of the sense of isolation and oppression which the people of his region:felt. La§sko, located in the barren Beskyd Mountains far from Prague, Warsaw, and Vienna, was virtually unknown to the world until coal began to be mined there in the early 19th century. The coal mines were a mixed blessing for the region, bringing the common citizen more misery than prosperity.

Lysohorsky entered a local German school when he reached school-age.

Although Czechs formed a majority of the population, in the year 1913 no Czech school existed in the area.

Lysohorsky excelled in his studies, received a scholarship, and went on to study in Prague, Paris, and Rome.

He received his doctorate in 1928.

From 1930 until the Nazi occupation he taught in Slovakia. In 1938 he was dismissed from his post in Bratislava for refusing to collaborate with the pro-German authorities. He fled to Poland in 1939, where he joined the Czechoslovak forces which were shortly thereafter interned by the occupying Soviet Army. After nine months Lysohorsky was released by the Soviets and he went on to Moscow, where he obtained a teaching post.

Lysohorsky created a sensation in Czechoslovakia in 1934 with the publication of his volume of verse SPJEWAJUCO PIA (THE SINGING FIST). This work and the following volume HLOS HRUDY (THE VOICE OF THE NATIVE SOIL) were written entirely in Lysohorsky's native Lachian dialect.

Lysohorsky, in his love for his homeland and its speech, created a literary language which corresponds to the speech of La§sko. The Silesian poet Petr Bezrue had achieved popularity in Czechoslovakia at the turn of the century with his book SLEZSKE PISNE (SILESIAN SONGS). Bezrue wrote in standard literary Czech and employed a sprinkling of words from Silesian dialect. Lysohorsky on the other hand chose to write entirely in his native dialect and he elevated this speech to the status of a literary language.

The tiny region of La§sko, located in north-central Czechoslovakia, is found at a crossroads where the Czech, Polish, and Slovak languages meet. During the period of Austrian rule, which lasted until the end of the First World War, the government forced the German language and culture upon the native population. In order for an individual to receive an education and advance in society it was necessary for him to adopt the German language. Many German words and expressions found their way into the dialect of the region.

Although Silesian dialect is spoken by a relatively small group of people, linguists argue that it is actually a language separate from both Czech and Polish. The differences between Silesian dialect and both Czech and Polish developed at the same point in history when Czech, Polish, and the other Western Slavic languages are evolving as separate languages.

Using this criterion, linguists state that Silesian dialect is an offshoot of neither Czech nor Polish. Interestingly enough Czech and Slovak, recognized commonly as two separate languages, separated from

each other at a more recent point in history than did Czech and Silesian and are more similar to each other than Czech and Silesian.

Lasko had for centuries been politically associated with Bohemia. The people of La§sko, however, did not identify themselves as Czechs. Living at a political and national crossroads, the people of Lasko had never developed a strong national identity.

Until recent times a native of the region would refer to himself as a Slonzak (Silesian) or a Moravec (Moravian). And these names referred more to geography than to ethnic identity. Matters of national allegiance and ethnic identity were further complicated by an influx of Polish settlers from Galicia who came in the 19th century to work the coal mines. Recognizing the similarities between Lachian dialect and the Polish language, these Polish immigrants insisted that Lasko was a part of the Polish nation and Lachian a dialect of the Polish language.

By the outbreak of the First World War Lasko had developed into a strategic industrial center. After the war the region was quickly claimed by both Czechoslovakia and Poland.

Despite Polish protests Lasko was awarded to Czechoslovakia. The Prague government however failed in many respects to nurture a deeplyfelt Czech national identity among the people of the region. The people of Lasko retained their long-felt feelings of alienation and isolation.

Czech politicians were deeply concerned about the possible political consequences of a Silesian separatist movement. These feelings were intensified after 1939, when Poland occupied, a portion of Czech Silesia.

Lysohorsky's insistence on writing in his native dialect had from the start created difficulties for him. This angered certain Czech politicians who felt that Czech political sovereignty in Silesia was threatened by the development of a Silesian national consciousness. Silesian writers in the past had been content to use either literary Czech or Polish.

Lysohorsky however would continue to write his poetry in Lachian dialect even when this act met with strong disapproval. Zdenek Nejedly, at the time an important Communist party official and later Minister of Education in the post-war Czech Community government, in 1943 asked Lysohorsky to stop writing in Lachian dialect. Nejedly and the Czech Communists felt that Lysohorsky's efforts were obstructing the development of a Czech national awareness in Silesia.

Lysohorsky ironically had at the start of his literary career received a stamp of approval from the Czech Communists. Much of Lysohorsky's early poetry deals with social issues.

Lysohorsky sought to draw attention to the plight of the exploited miners and other poor of his region. Following his move to Russia, Lysohorsky became quite popular there and was befriended by important Russian Communists. Zdenek Nejedly and other Czech Communists also had influence in Moscow, hoWever, and their complaints against Lysohorsky began to be voiced there. As a result Lyshorsky suddenly found himself out of favor with editors and publishirk houses. He was expelled from the Czechoslovak section of the Moscow All-Slav Committee.11€ was accused of aiding Hitler's war effort.

As the campaign of defamation against him intensified, Lysohorsky decided to appeal directly to Stalin.

This resulted in Lysohorsky's vindication. He was rehabilitated and he received permission to continue to write in Lachian. Stalin's decree did nothing to sooth relations between Lysohorsky and the Communist party in his native country, however.

Nejedly and the Czech Communists bitterly resented Lysohorsky's stubborn refusal to buckle to their demands and his appeal to Stalin.

Following Lysohorsky's return to Czechoslovakia after the war, the campaign of defamation against him was renewed. The name fascist was repeatedly hurled at him. His poetry was banned and volumes of his older works were confiscated from publishers. In 1961 a senior official of the Czechoslovak Communist Party's Central Commitee decreed: "It is forbidden to publish Ondra Lysohorsky's poems in the original Lachian . If from time to time some texts appear, then these must be in translation." Lysohorsky cared too deeply for his fellow man and he refused blind obedience to the communist party, two sins for which he could never be forgiven.

Lysohorsky's work in translation has become increasingly popular throughout the world in recent years.

From the publication of his first volume of verse, his work has found its way into translation. Volumes of his work have appeared in Russian, English, French, German, Hungarian, and other languages.

Several translations by W. H. Auden have appeared in English.

Lysohorsky's translator Ewald Osers posed the question whether it is a piece of good fortune for Silesian dialect or a misfortune for world literature that Lysohorsky's native tongue is Lachian dialect. As Osers points out, Lysohorsky would have been an important poet in any language. The importance of Lysohorsky the poet cannot be obscured by his efforts to raise Lachian dialect to the status of a literary language. It is chiefly for his poetry that the world will ultimately remember Ondra Lysohorsky. It is to be noted that Lysohorsky's outlook is universal. Despite the criticism directed at him as a stubborn and eccentric regionalist poet, we must recognize in his work the idealized Slavic virtue of peaceful co-existence and love for humanity. Few writers show such love for humanity. Only a very few modern writers share Lysohorsky's view of our human responsibility to our fellow man and the relative unimportance of our own ego. It is a great misfortune that the inaccessability of Lysohorsky's native speech and the political oppression visited upon him by the communist party of his native land have denied him the recognition he deserves.
