1983 Texas Fraternal Congress Set For Temple Lyndon Olson To Speak

iclon Oh Ti The 83rd Annual Gun-ention of the Texas Fraternal Congress is set for October 21st-23rd at the Ponderosa Motor Inn in Temple. The Texas Fraternal Congress is comprised of delegates from approximately 23 Fraternal Benefit Societies throughout the State of Texas. Some are domiciled (have their Home Offices) in Texas and others, while doing business in

Texas, have their Home Offices in other states.

The Congress will hold all of its sessions in the Banquet Room of the Ponderosa Motor Inn which will include a number of various informative sessions with speakers and presentations.

The Congress will get under way the with registration and president's reception Friday evening, October 21st, followed by a banquet that same evening and concluding at noon Sunday, October 23rd. Both the reception and the banquet will be held in the Banquet Room of the Ponderosa.

Various reports will be given Saturday morning, including a report from the recently cornn'eted National Fratern,C, Congress in Denver by Louis Enfzeike, president of the Sons of Hermann from San Antonio. The Fraternal Affairs Section will meet at 1:30 p.m.

Saturday at which State Insurance Board ,r.:;,, airman Lyndon Olson will speak. There vv be a Fraternal Insurance Counselors' luncheon, Legislative Committee report, and other information of interest to Fraternal Benefit Societies in Texas. After Mr. Olson's remarks, there will be short reports from representatives of most of the Societies on their activities in Fraternal Affairs.

Out of the 67 sales representatives in District V 39 were in attendance at these seminars along with their spouses. We appreciate the efforts of these sales representatives and urge those not present to

join us in keeping abreast of the changing times of the 80's.

Lodge 66 Recognizes Sales Representatives

Sates representatives in attendance Monday, Sept. 26 at Lodge 88 Houston. Lodges represented were Lodges 65, 88, 91, 142,'172, 176, and 181.

Lodge 66 members, at their regularly scheduled monthly meeting, recognized the SPJST Sales Representatives. Sam Silas Smith, a member of Lodge 66, asked all sales representatives to stand and be recognized for their accomplishments in making Lodge 66 grow.

The general membership of all our lodges would do themselves well to recognize the accomplishments of

the SPJST sales representative, as the growth of the SPJST and cash refunds back to the lodges are directly proportionate to the sales representatives production. The growth of all SPJST programs is dependent upon our insurance sales.

We salute all SPJST Sales Representatives for a job well done and a special tribute to Lodge 66 for recognizing this fact.

DAY Dear Members, Judging by the large attendance and the complimentary remarks, I would say that our first attempt at having a Family Day was quite a success! The dinner was great and special thanks go to all of you who brought all that delicious food and to Lodge 88 members Alvin Raymond, Mike Trefell and Annie Vala and their helpers (Evelyn and Milert Antrich, John Broz, Bennie and Stacy Kocich and Alex Mendoza) for that good baked chicken and the coffee and tea. Thanks go to Louis Hanus for donating the bread and to Annie Vala for donating the coffee, tea and sugar! Many thanks go to Pastry Chairman Lillie Spies and her helpers Evelyn Mikolas, Lillian Finn and Estelle Kelly who took care of all those delicious cakes and pies you brought. Thank you, Janet Raymond, for taking care of the registration.

During the noon hour and between the acts of the program Weinart Grohmann, the Lawrence Welk of our lodge, entertained us with his beautiful accordion music.

Weinart teaches accordion and guitar at his Oak Forest Music Studio and does single engagements for special occasions. Thank you, Weinart, for donating your time and talent for our enjoyment.

Frances Olexa displayed beautiful Czech costumes, including colorful pictures of various Czech costumes.

She showed patterns for the colorful embroidery, the designs being her own original ones. Frances, thank you; many enjoyed your beautiful work and discussion of it.

We all enjoyed this very much and surely appreciate your going to all the trouble of packing and unpacking to give us the chance to see this. Mary Tilich and Pearl Hanka assisted Rosalee.

I think the Quilt and Bed Spread Show was also a big success! I am grateful to Chairman Mary Schenburn and assistants Vlasta Nowotny, Mary Ann Kieschnick, Henrietta Krenek, Delores Prochazka and Evelyn Sefcik. I want to thank judges Elsie Angele, Myrna Denny and Thelma Field; they really had a difficult job. The winners in the quilt show were Marilyn Jaksch (first), Amelia Tolfe (second) and Josephine Bishop (third). The winners in bed spreads were: Estelle Kelly (first), Emma Jarisch (second), and Vlasta Nowotny (third).

The committee and I are grateful to all you ladies who brought the many beautiful quilts and spreads.

The program started at 2 p.m. with District First Vice President Jerry Prochazka giving a warm welcome from the district officers.

The Presentation of Colors was by District Flag Bearer Jeffrey Barcak and Lodge 88 Flag Bearer Vincent Hegwood who also led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Helen Hegwood gave a beautiful rendition of the national anthems and was accompanied by Naomi Spencer.

Lodge 88 President Larry Pflughaupt welcomed the guests warmly.

District President Tillie Helmcamp stated that we had to have a brief meeting to decide the location of the spring meeting. It was decided that Lodge 142 would host the meeting to be held the 2nd Sunday in March. The recognition was given to the lodges represented on this occasion.

The program resumed with District Queen Doris Fabrygel and District King Vincent Hegwood giving the speeches that won them their titles. We are proud of Doris and Vincent for they represent our district well Lodge 88 Beseda dancers, both groups state winners, performed beautifully. Lodge Youth Leader Linda Wehring and assistant Debbie Wehring were given recognition for

teaching the Beseda.

Melissa Fowler, a student at the University of Texas and daughter of Barbara and Mike Fowler and granddaughter of Margaret Bohac and the late Frank Bohac, danced for us and she surely is an accomplished dancer. President Pflughaupt presented her the $1,000 SPJST Scholarship she was awarded recently.

The comical wedding (reported in detail by a "reporter from New York" — Larry Pflughaupt) of Priscilla Pringle (Marie Stayton), who had finally caught her man, and Sam Crabtree (Jan Schroif) who was wishing he were somewhere else, was hilarious. The bride's parents (Millie Manick and Jerry Poston) and the groom's parents (Marcell Malak and Mike Trefell) were as comical as were the bride and groom. Aunt Betsy (Susan Schenburn) who had a terrible experience in the big city, the Parson (Arnold Spencer) who was most forgetful, and the rich uncle (Willie Wehring) from whom a big gift was expected were truly great!

The pianist (Estelle Kelly) and the vocalist (Helen Hegwood), both talented enough to be in opera, were superb!

Then there were the four lovely bridesmaids (Dorothy Pflughaupt, Clara Broz, Juanita Simons, and Carol Bruce), dressed in interesting ways, and their handsome escorts (Gene Barcak, A. J. Stayton, Vernon Hegwood, and Johnny Broz) who acted quite bored with it all The ring bearer (Karl Pflughaupt) was so dressed up and carried a huge pillow for the ring. Let's not forget the bride's grandma (Naomi Spencer), who tried to stop the wedding, and grandpa (Alvin Raymond), who tried to calm her down. The actors and actresses were so good and their costumes so interesting and original that there were several requests for a repeat performance!

District Director Louis Hanus spoke briefly, and I want to thank him for his kind words.

District VII Minutes Of Spring Meeting

Sister Maxine Pavliska, District VII youth counselor, urged the members to support the youth club booths because this could mean an extra clay at camp which will be held July 26th through 30th at Camp Val Verde. District VII YAD will be held July 10th at New Braunfels. Youth Leaders Retreat will be held at Camp Val Verde, May 14th and 15th.

Youth leaders and assistants of District VII and District V met in Flatonia to discuss and make plans for a combined camping.

Brother Bob Bayer reported that he attended the Longhorn Recreation Lab and also that he is serving on the Longhorn Committee. Brother Bayer presented the 50-year membership pins to the following: Brother Henry Belicek of Lodge 147, Sister Carrie Veselka of Lodge 79, and Sister Frances Linholm of Lodge 107.

A discussion was made about the salaries of the officers. The set salaries were voted on. Motion made

by Brother Netek and seconded by Sister Pavelka, passed and carried.

It was accepted by the membership to have a District VII Family Day and a short meeting so that the members have a chance to socialize.

Lodge 133 San Antonio will host this occasion; date to be announced later.

The Nominating Committee chairman, Brother Bob Bayer, presented the following recommendation: President William Marek, 1st Vice President Emil Matula, 2nd Vice President Helen Pavelka, Secretary Betty Jurica, Treasurer Ernest Jasek, Youth Counselor Maxine Pavliska, Assistant Youth Counselor Polly Bayer. Motion by Brother Frank Veselka that all the officers be elected by acclamation; seconded by Sister Tillie Valchar. Motion carried.

The District VII spring meeting was held in Floresville, April 10, 1983 hosted by Lodge 107, Floresville. The meeting was called to order by District VII President William Marek.

Brother Bob Bayer welcomed all of the members and guests.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led

by Amanda Burleson of Lodge 107.

Following the Pledge, a moment of silence was observed in memory of the District VII deceased members.

Roll call of officers revealed all present. Roll call of lodges represented, revealed that eight were represented and they were: Corpus Christi No. 79, Karnes No. 93, Rozkvet Zapadu No. 107, Robstown No. 117, San Antonio No. 133, Taft No. 137, Jourdanton No. 161, and New Braunfels No. 185.

The minutes of the last meeting were read by Secretary Betty Jurica and approved after making one correction. A nursery trip was planned by Lodge 107, but it was cancelled and it was explained that the nurseryman didn't have enough plants to show because it was too early in the spring.

Brother Ernest Jasek, treasurer, gave the following report: General Fund — $529.34; Youth Fund— $23.46. (Expenses for District VII YAD were $504.88).

District VII Director Sister Thelma Hrncir brought wishes for a successful meeting from the Supreme Lodge. She reported that the year 1982 was a good one and that many members cancelled their policies, not because that the insurance isn't good but because of economic conditions. Sister Hrncir said that the Corporate Planning Committee has recommended that the Society promote a project for "Child Abuse and Neglect" through Texas Human Resources Commission. The premium refunds will be 3% this year and loans were at 12°k the last three months.

Dear Members: Our meeting of Lodge 24 was called to order by President David Vanicek.

The flag was presented by Melanie Zavodny and Brandi Gotcher who led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We then remained standing in moment of silence for our deceased members; Sister Rosie Stepan, Brother John Stefka and Brother William B. Marek.

We have Brother Johnnie Svoboda in the hospital who had an accident. We wish him a speedy recovery.

We welcomed our visitors Wesley and Vallie Tupy from Lodge 183, Mid-Cities.

Secretary Pat Vanicek read the correspondence: a letter from Brenda Marek (SPJST Scholarship recipient) thanking for the brief ceremony in presenting her with the check; a letter from the Vrazels and Strmiskas thanking us for the cooperation and helping in their preparations for their wedding which was held at our hall; a card of thanks from Brother Joe L. Coufal family for the flowers, also from the Brother William B. Marek family thanking us for the flowers.

Brother Franklin Martinet thanked the members for giving him the safe.

Alicia M. Engelholm was accepted as a new member.

The Salary Committee presented the proposals of their change in the salaries and they were accepted by the members.

The Rules and Regulations Committee presented their changes in the R&Rs. They will now be posted in the lodge entrance for 30 days for any member who may like to get familiar with the changes. All members, who are interested, come to the next meeting and vote on them. At the next meeting, we will also be electing lodge officers and chairpersons so all members keep these important issues in mind and come do your duty and vote.

We are happy so many people responded and brought things for the Child Abuse Center; this is what SPJST is all about: FRATERNALISM. Thanks, again!

The youth leader gave us a report that there will be a District II Skating Party at Skate Haven Sunday, October 9th. They had planned to attend. Then Sunday, October 30, the youth will sponsor a Halloween Party at 3 p m at the hall and everyone is invited, also the youth suggested that you dress up in Halloween costume; but, if you prefer not to, there will be a fine you will have to pay so come regardless and enjoy having dominoes while the youth go hayriding. They are asking everyone to bring

sandwiches, chips, and sweets for yourself and guests. The youth club also donated $25.00 towards the Child Abuse Center.

Plans were made for our Christmas Party which will be held Sunday, December 11 at 4 p.m. beginning with a program and following will be a turkey and dressing meal which will be furnished by the hall. Members are asked to bring a vegetable, or salad or dessert dish. We also decided to give fruit out to members and Brother E. J. and Sister Laveda Geistman accepted to get the fruit.

Jimmy Mayfield was the only birthday celebrant present, and those having an anniversary and being present included Robert and Barbara Macek.

Door prizes were won by Johnny Chervenka, Barbara Macek, Gary Coots and Tracey Chervenka.

Dear Members and Friends, President Jerry Pechal called our last meeting, Sunday, October 2 to order at 2 p.m.

Flagbearers Daryl Kortis and Tim Wilson led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Everyone remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our departed Brother Jerry Hruska. May he rest in eternal peace.

Special honorees at this meeting were the young ladies who were recipients of the SPJST scholarships. Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas, Jr. presented Gena Odstrcil, Kathleen Odstrcil, Karen Jez and Melissa Simcik their checks.

Dorothy Pechal presented each one with a corsage and seated them at a specially-prepared table. Their parents also attended this meeting.

Congratulations to all of you!

All officers and chairpersons were present and gave 'satisfactory reports. Correspondence consisted of a thank you note from the Jerry Hruska family. Also a thank you note from Thelma Hrncir thanking us for the interest in the "Child Abuse" program; also, Mrs. Albina Rychlik gave a donation in memory of Jerry Hruska.

Reported on the sick list were Ann Hejl (who was able to be at the meeting), William Hejl and William Havlik; also, last month I had omitted Dana Glaser from the sick list. Sorry about this. We wish all of you a very speedy recovery.

Johnny Hruska read the changes the committee had recommended in the Rules and Regulations. They were accepted. Frank Klinkovsky gave a recommendation from the Salary Committee. It was accepted.

Dan Balusek, Dolores Skrabanek and Lillie Mikulas were appointed to a committee to review the prospective delegates eligibility for the last three years.

Lodge 66 Donates $200 To Charities Dear Members: The SPJST Lodge 66 in Waco held their meeting Sunday, October 9th with President Johnnie Gaidusek presiding.

The flags were presented by Chris and Kevin Owens. Chris Owens led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance and the Lodge Motto.

For roll call of officers all were present except Guide George Pauling; Brother Vernetti sat in for Brother Pauling.

Sister Bonnie Pruitt read the minutes of the September meeting.

Following a small correction, they were approved as read.

Under correspondence, a letter from Mrs. Thelma Hrncir explaining that because of a conflicting date, she could not attend our October meeting, also a letter from Brother Jerry Mikulas of the Supreme Lodge advising us about the number of votes and delegates we may elect to the 1984 SPJST Convention.

Sister Engelke read a letter stating our District III dues need to be paid. It was voted these dues be paid.

It was also voted we table the date of having Mrs. Hrecir until in January, 1984 due to elections in our November meeting and other commitments in December.

Engelke read the minutes of their Wednesday, October 5th meeting.

Brother Frank Miller gave a very good detailed third quarterly financial report. Brother Miller was complimented on the excellent job he does on these books. We appreciate his time spent on these reports on lodge and game nights.

Brother Vernetti reported the Auditing Committee had audited all lodge books and they are in excellent order. They will now audit youth club and bingo books.

Sister Barbara Brem gave the youth club report; due to other commitments, the club has scheduled their trip to Six Flags, October 22nd. They also plan to go skating in November. The club has been very busy on many projects. It has been a busy year for them. We are very proud of our youth members.

Sister Dorothy Shilling reported on the Entertainment Committee.

She thanked the ladies for the sandwiches, those on the committee who got the chips and donuts. The meal was very good. Due to the election in November only popcorn and drinks will be served.

Health Committee Report: Sister Polly Gaidusek sent sympathy cards to Brother Daniel Nors Family and Sister Agnes Janek on the loss of their sister. May she rest in peace.

Get-well cards were sent to Brother Bill Cox on his recent stay in the VA Hospital and to Brother Frank Nors.

We hope both of them are OK. It was good, to see Brother Cox at the meeting.

A very nice card was signed by everyone at the meeting to be sent to Brother Ed and Sister Agnes Mazanec. We hope both of them are OK. We really miss these two faithful members and we all send our best wishes.

Welfare Committee Report: Sister Jeanette Smith had received thank you notes from Buddy Seay and the Larry Pankoniens for the donations. No names were turned in so Sister Jeanette said the Klaras Children's Center was in need of funds. It was voted to donate $50.00 to this organization; also Caritas, in honor of their second year of World Food Day, was collecting canned goods. It was voted that we donate $50.00 to this fund. It was then reported that one of our members, Sister Joyce Briggs and family had lost their trailer home in a fire. It was voted we donate $100.00 to the Lancaster family; thus making a grand total of $200.00 for donations in October.

President Gaidusek reminded everyone that Sunday, November 20 we will have election of officers and delegates to the 1984 Convention.

Please attend this meeting; vote for your choice; also take an active part and become one of the individuals of these jobs. We need help and for some of our young people to get on these committees and offices. Yes, it is lots of work, takes time, but it is your lodge, too; help to keep it going.

State Field Manager Silas Smith gave an interesting talk on our sales representatives and also on the forthcoming elections. We are all very proud of our sales

representatives; they help our lodges grow in membership.

October 10, 1983, our regular lodge meeting of Lovelady Lodge was held. All officers and trustees were present with the exception of Jeff Moore, trustee.

All reports were read and approved. The youth club is still active. Youth Leader Linda Michka reported the Beseda Dancers performed for the Tejas Pilgrimage at Weches.

President Wilcox and Vice President Fowler appointed Creola Wilcox, Mary McInnis and Marie Wright to the Nominating Committee.

It's time, once again, to start thinking about electing officers and trustees for our lodge for 1984; also delegates for the 1984 SPJST Convention to be held in Corpus Christi. To be elected officers, trustees or delegates, you have to attend the majority of local lodge meetings each year.

We were glad to have Mr. and Mrs. Russell from Huntington with us Saturday night. We had quite a few visitors from surrounding areas Saturday night, and we hope they come back.

Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Smith were celebrating their anniversary Saturday night, and Jasper Jennings of Texas City celebrated his birthday. We wish them all many more happy occasions.

Brother Adolph Salac wishes to thank the following for the work done September 28th on the dance floor, kitchen and the shrubs; namely, Brother Edwin and Sister Annie Petr, Brother Randy Scott and Sister Rose Scott, Brother Oldrich Horak, Brother Paul Pokladnik, Brother Ron Coker, Brother Adolph and Sister Evelyn Salac. It's always nice to drive up to the lodge and see the front shrubs trimmed so evenly. Thanks to Brother Edwin and Sister Annie Petr for all the times they have done it. This last time Sister Rose and Randy Scott helped them.

In our September lodge meeting, the membership voted and approved to make our parking lot loan payment on time by October 1st; this is why we like to set the Czech Fest before this payment is due each year.

Lodge

Friday night a reception was held at the lodge in the Red Room and the dining room to entertain five out-oftown guests. The hostesses were Rosalee Kostom, treasurer of the Choral Club, and Rose Sicner, secretary of the Czech Concert Orchestra. About seventy-five guests were present to welcome two prominent Czech film actors from Czechoslovakia. Very handsome Josef Abrham and lovely, blond Zdena Studenkova accompanied by Dagmar Pokorna; the three spoke Czech. From New York were Christopher Wood with the International Film Exchange and.

When they arrived introductions were in order and then Brother William Souchek welcomed the honored guests and a very nice and delicious buffet was served with refreshments. The party was here in Houston to promote Czech Films at the Greenway Plaza Theaters for one week with a different film each day from October 28 through November 3, 1983.

The District V meeting called "FAMILY DAY" has come and gone.

It turned out to be a perfect day and enjoyed by 200 guests present. The success of this undertaking was in the hands of District V President Tillie Helmcamp. The guests were very generous in bringing side dishes of food to be served with the delicious baked-chicken furnished by District V and prepared by Sister Annie Vala and Alvin Raymond.

Dinner was served buffet style with coffee and tea and plenty of homebaked pastries.

The three displays held the interest of the visitors. Rosalee Kostom's display held various items of beautiful Czechoslovak cut glass and crystals and numerous figurines and many drressed dolls in different costumes and sizes. It enhanced the beauty of these items with the beautiful handmade tablecloths.

Wednesday, October 19, 1983—VESTMK/7 tablecloths was taken care of by Mary Schenburn. Looking at these it was difficult to choose. Three judges had a time to decide on six winners to be given ribbons.

My booth with several ladies' and mens' vests I made and my costume (61 years old) also held the interest of knowing how to make these; I showed them how I create my designs and each one to be different and original. I made over a hundred and none are alike.

The highlite of the day was the Mock Wedding. The whole arrangement was written by District V President Tillie Helmcamp and it was absolutely delightful; all the participating characters were dressed in high fashion. Their clothes must have been ordered from Fifth Avenue, New York. To sing "0 Promise Me" and other songs, Helen Hegwood was hilarious; she tore the house down. Of course, there was adlibbing by some actors which was not in Tillie's script. The day was delightful and enjoyed by all and closed with refreshments furnished

by District V. For the past few weeks a lot of 88 members made a trip to the promised land of Las Vegas. Few were lucky to come home with the Casino's money, but most invested their cash for the future in hopes to pick it up next time with interest; (I am one of them).

September 14 Joe Miksch and wife, Della, with friends Tom and Clara Jecmenek drove and stayed five days. Joe is always lucky; he knows how to handle those machines. I have not heard about Della and Clara but Tom struck it good; he was hugging 9 one-hundred jack pots he told me, and all in one day.

Ziegie Aurbacher had it all figured out before he left for Las Vegas with his friends, Eugene and Silvia Kalus, but returned very disappointed as nothing would work for them. But they are willing to try again.

Another group of 23 people and the trip arranged by Millie Manack to fly Pan-Am for four days to Las Vegas. It was a delightful trip and enjoyed by all in one way or another.

None came out as millionaires, but few were lucky to manage to bring home some of the Las Vegas loot.

We bunked at the Four Queens in the center of town and had access to several Casinos in the area of one block. The Horseshoe was very popular with our group; besides the playing, the food they served was very good and reasonable. We left Friday and returned Monday and ready for more punishment. On the plane, Pearl Hanka and I always have seats together. This time the plane was filled to capacity and no window seats to be had, so we landed in the middle of the plane, next to a very nice couple, Ray and Betty Claborn of Giddings, Texas. In no time we were engaged in a very friendly conversation and enjoying our cocktails before lunch. After drinking our wine, Roy insisted on having another and, naturally, we both accepted. We expected to come back on the same plane home Monday, but Ray's business must have kept them longer. We both enjoyed their company.

Sister Lillie (Petrovalsky) Urbish informed me about her husband,

George Urbish, being confined in St. Joseph Hospital Room 4442. to have lung surgery; so far I have not heard anything. Hope the operation was successful. George, you have our sincere wishes for a speedy recovery. wLillie and George live in Bay City, Tx. Please take note, the annual Czech Day at Lodge No. 88 will be held October 23, 1983. Come out and enjoy a delicious dinner to be served from 11:30 'till 2 p.m. but food will be available through the day. Lots of entertainment and the famous Costume Parade before the dance. If you own a costume be sure and wear same.

Lodge 142 Schedules Nov. 4th Meeting Our monthly meeting of Lodge 142, Houston, was called to order by President Mary Ann Kieschnick.

There were 32 members present and they all stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

Roll call of officers was held and all were present, except Brother Sidon and Sister Rose Tumis.

All officers' reports were then given.

The Sick Committee reported that Mrs. Kunetka is under the weather and we missed her at this meeting.

Youth Club reported that they are selling tickets for several prizes to be given away at our Christmas Party. The tickets are selling for 5() or 3 for $1.00; the project that this money will go to will be for the youth club, and the prize will be a beautiful handmade quilt, a 32-qt. Igloo cooler, and a $25.00 Savings Bond.

The capsule drawing prize went unclaimed for $50.00. We will draw again for $50.00 in our November meeting.

Sister Frieda Jochlke was the proud recipient of a $5.00 consolation prize.

Door prize winners were Maggie Cernoch, Rudolph Cernoch, Nelson Jochen, and Robert Kieschnick.

Refreshments and sandwiches were enjoyed along with the fine fellowship of our members. The next meeting will be Friday, November 4th at 8 p.m.

We had some fine members of our lodge who had just returned from a vacation trip and reported a nice time. Henry and Rita Hermis, Sr., and Henry and Barbara Hermis, Jr., and little son, toured several states.

It was reported they went through Louisiana, the Carolinas, Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee. While in Tennessee, they attended the Grand Ole Opery in Nashville before returning back to home in Houston, Sunday, October 2nd. Welcome back home and we are glad you had a safe trip!

13 Meeting For Lodge 154, Ft. Worth

Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting yesterday was called to order at 2 p.m. instead of 3 p.m. by our Vice President Brother Don Steinman, in the absence of Brother Jerry Milan. He, along with Brother Emil and Rome Milan, were attending the Coaches' Congress in Washington, D.C. The Pledge of Allegiance followed. All the reports were approved as read after minor changes.

Brother Steinman reported the youth club along with the Sokol gymnasts will have their annual Halloween Party Monday at 7 p.m.

The parents are asked to bring a bag of candy for the bags to be given out and cookies or pastry for a social that will follow. There will be prizes.

He also reported what a good job Sister Carolyn Cleveland was doing.

Carolyn and Brother Bobby are in Hawaii for a week and then a week in Australia.

Brother Steinman also reminded us that, at the next meeting, delegates will be elected for the convention.

A motion was made and carried that our lodge get a hardback book of the lodges' history be ordered.

We want to wish a speedy recovery to Brother George Hallford who had back surgery and is in St. Frances Hospital in Peoria, Illinois. Get well soon, George!

We extend our congratulations tq Brother Carl Johnson who received his Bachelor of Science Degree from East Texas State University.

We also congratulate two of our members Susan Catherine Maldino and David A. Mocio who were wed Saturday, October 8th at All Saints Catholic Church. Rev. Stephen Mocio officiated. Susan is a graduate of North Texas State University and David received his degree from Texas A &M University. They will live in Berkley, Michigan. Susan is the daughter of Sister Aurora Maldino and the late Milton J. Maldino.

David's parents are Brother and Sister Steve J. Mocio. May they have a long and happy life together.

Our meeting adjourned so that we could attend the 45th anniversary of Lodge 92. It was nice to see so many of our members attending and having a wonderful time. It was a great celebration. Our best wishes for many more anniversaries.

News From Lodge 172, Pasadena We want to let our Lodge 172 members know about our social Sunday, October 30th. There will be a barbecue dinner from 1 to 3 p.m.; a dance from 3 to 7 p.m., with music by the Vanek Orchestra of Victoria.

This social will be free to Lodge 172 members only; guests will pay $5, for dinner/dance or $4 for dance only. We will have plenty of cold drinks of all kinds, so all you members come out and bring your friends.

We will have a Christmas Party December 17th, however, we will have more information for you at a later date.

Some of us (eight) from Lodge 172 went to the District V Family Day and I wish more could have been present. The play by Lodge 88 was super, a comedy by Tillie Helmcamp and group was presented; I wish you could have seen it.

Some of our members who don't show up very often should come around to see what your lodge officers and trustees are doing to improve the parking lot, etc. We still have some things that we will do in the future; our roof over the barbecue pit is in place and we need to do more around it and to it.

By the time this is in print we should have asphalt floor in to keep out surface water. We need to stack up our wood and there is a possibility that we will need some good pecan or oak wood next year, so keep your lodge in mind when and if you have some to give away; just call me or one of the other officers or trustees for information.

Don't forget to come to the meetings the second Wednesday of each month; and, if you have anything to discuss with officers, come to the Executive Board meetings the fourth Wednesday of the month; each meeting starts at 7:30 p.m.

SPJST District VII Family Day (Oct. 30, 1983) Dear Brothers and Sisters: Those of you who attended the last District VII meeting in Floresville will, I am sure, recognize that it was the best meeting, the most attended and the most with participants that many remember. I attribute this to each and everyone of you, be it small lodge in membership or large. The interest at the district level is growing and I predict will continue to grow because your voices are heard, action on your suggestions and opinions are discussed.

The results of your interest in one of the subjects brought up in our meetings over the past year is having a District Family Day (social) rather than a full meeting.

The plan is as follows: the event is hosted by Lodge 133 San Antonio; it will be held at Comanche Park No. 3, at 2600 Rigsby Ave. (in case of rain 1505 Gevers St.): the park opens at 10:00 a.m. and dinner will be served at 12:30 p.m. Note: Lodge will furnish the meat and bread.

Members and guests are asked to bring a vegetable and a dessert.

I urge everyone to attend this event and bring your guest if you like; this is also an occasion to show the public what we experience in fraternalism.

Corpus Christi, Texas I have received a newspaper clipping from the American Statesman written by Nat Henderson about Westfest -Labor Day Weekend.

In that article it said: The first Sokol groups were formed in Czechoslovakia in 1865. The West Sokol Gymnastic Association performed at 5 p.m. at Westfest Sunday, September 4th.

Below is a short Sokol history.

The creator of the Sokol idea, Dr. Miroslav Tyrs, was born at Decin, Northern Bohemia 17 September 1832. The revolutionary- year of 1848 made him an ardent patriot.

During his studies at the University of Praha (Prague), Tyrs attended the Gymnastic Institute of Jan Malypetr for three years and

then was instructor in the Gymnastic Institute of Ferd.

Towards the end of 1858 Tyrs became tutor in the home of the manufacturer R. Bartelmus at Novy Jachymov near Beroun. Here he met Jindrich (Henry) Fuegner, a man of high intellectual culture, general manager of the Prague branch of the Trieste Insurance Association, who had his summer resort not far from New Jachymov. This seemingly trifle event had immensely important consequences. Both men soon found that they had many things in common: patriotism with humanitarianism, a strong feeling for art, clear head, world outlook, courage to have and to express their own convictions, pleasure in philosophic meditation, vivid interest in everyday needs of the nation, pure altruism, and all that led to the intimate friendship which was severed only by the death of Fuegner who was 10 years older than Tyrs, and who died in Prague 15 November 1865.

July 27, 1860, Tyrs was proclaimed Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Prague. Inspired by conversations with Fuegner, Tyrs began to realize his great idea: the foundation of an organization which would tend to educate the whole nation by perfect and methodical gymnastic exercises to high national aims, such as valor, fresh strength, physical, intellectual and moral health, etc.

February 16, 1862, the Sokol Association, the parent body of all the Sokol organizations in all parts of the world, was founded in Prague.

Jindrich Fuegner was elected first president, Miroslav Tyrs, vice president, and so began Tyrs' great work which continued for 23 years almost without interruption.

From May 13, 1862 Tyrs was the leader, chief instructor, of the Sokol Association. The founding of the Prague Sokol created a considerable stir in Bohemia and Moravia and, in the same year, 1862, further units arose in ten towns.

The first Czech Sokol in the United States was founded 14 February 1865 in St. Louis, Missouri.

In 1862-63 Tyrs compiled a Czech gymnastic nomenclature; it is considered, to this day, the greatest terminology of gymnastic training in all the world.

January 15, 1871, the first issue of the monthly "Sokol" appeared and Tyrs, who was editor-in-chief of the publication, wrote for the first issue the article "Our Task, Our Direction and Tendency and Our Aim" which represents the basis of the Sokol idea and will remain the evangel of all Sokol units forever.

August 28, 1877 Tyrs married Fuegner's daughter, Renata, who has been the greatest Sokol woman of all times. (She died 22 February 1937, and Miroslav Tyrs died 18 August 1884.) He is buried in Olsany Cemetery in Prague.

Kulhanek Reunion

The eleventh Kulhanek reunion was held Sunday, September 25, 1983, at Sts. Peter and Paul Dining Hall in Frelsburg, Texas. One hundred eighty-five descendants of Antonin and Celestina Kulhanek along with Rev. Werner Buckholt and Rev. Edward Geiser were present.

A Holy Mass for deceased members of the Kulhanek family was held at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church at 10 a.m. with Rev. Buckholt as celebrant. Registration began at 11 a.m. followed by a basket lunch served at 12:30 p.m. A short business meeting was held at 2 p.m. with Mrs. Jo Ann Canik, president of the reunion, presiding.

Deacon Jerry Kulhanek welcomed everyone to the reunion and led the opening prayer. The minutes were read by Mrs. Ruth Ann Wunderlich, secretary. Mrs. Cora Wostarek, treasurer, gave her report.

Mr. Leonard Kulhanek, historian, gave a report on the Kulhanek Family History Book which he has completed. He reported that the book is at the printer. His book will contain photos, family history, Coat of Arms, family tree, letters, and Kulhanek reunion reports. When available, books will be sold for $6 each plus $1.50 for postage and handling. September 30, 1984 is the date set for the twelfth Kulhanek reunion which will be held at the same location. Members of the Kulhanek family will take part in the Liturgy of the Mass at 10 a.m. The slate of officers will remain the same for the next reunion. Descendants of six of Antonin and Celestina Kulhanek's children were recognized by family groups. Also recognized were the oldest relatives present: Mrs. Albina Krenek, 91 years of age, and Mr. Joe Janish, 84 years of age. The longestmarried couple present was Mr. and Mrs. Joe Janish (married 60 years).

The most recently married couple present was Billy and Sandy Vasek (married 121/2 months). The youngest person present was Jesse Kulhanek, 51/2-month-old, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Kulhanek. Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Wilde of San Angelo, Texas traveled the farthest distance to the reunion.

Door prizes were won by Claudia Goerig, Leroy Pavlicek, Kim Kulhanek, James Wunderlich and Kathleen Kulhanek. The meeting closed with a prayer by Deacon Kulhanek.

Relatives spent the remainder of the afternoon playing cards, visiting, making acquaintances and sharing old photographs.

Those attending came from Columbus, Houston, Palacios, El Campo, New Ulm, Austin, La Grange, Fayetteville, Wallis, Orchard, Pasadena, San Angelo, East Bernard, Waller, Bellville, Galena Park, Eagle Lake, Damon, Rosenberg and Brenham.

YOUTH SECTION STATE YAD — 1984 The 1984 State YAD (including Royalty) is set for Sunday, August 12, 1984, to commence at 10:30 a.m., at Temple High School. The noon meal will be catered; resume YAD early in the afternoon. We plan to finish by 5. — NAM. *** STATE YAD — 1984 To All Concerned: I had previously announced that the 1984 State YAD (including Royalty) was tentatively set for Sunday, August 19th.

In a recent communication from the Temple ISD Business Office, we were requested that, if possible, to schedule this event a little earlier next year. The custodial staff was in somewhat of a bind this year because they had to work into the night to get everything cleaned and ready for an all-day in-service training program for the Temple ISD faculty the next morning.

Therefore, to accommodate our good friends at Temple High School, we are scheduling the 1984 State YAD one week earlier — namely, Sunday, August 12th. As I stated previously, we will most likely start the day's activities around 10:30 a.m., take an hour for lunch and resume early in the afternoon.

This might crowd us a little with the end of camps, but we will do the best we can. The earlier date might also be better for our youth who had to start to school the day after our YAD this year. We still plan to finish by 5 p.m. — NAM.

The clubbers donated glass to the West Czech Folk Dancers and also newspaper to the CYO in West, and donated money to other charities.

November 13 —The youth members are having a kitchen shower for the lodge; cup towels, big spoons, bowls, cookie sheets or whatever you wish to bring for the kitchen by our next meeting for November 13th, will be greatly appreciated.

Our club members made Christmas ornaments from dough.

They all had lots of fun. We will be getting our Christmas program together soon. See you all on Fridays!

FUTURE ACTIVITIES FOR LODGE 6 YC Dear Members and Friends: The Youth Club of Cottonwood Lodge held their October meeting October 2nd, and there were many reports made on the past and present activities as listed below.

October 5—Birthday cakes were donated to the West Rest Haven residents.

October 14 —Campbell's labels expiration date.

October 16 — Youth Club held their field trip to Six Flags.

October 28—Bake sale at the Leroy Bank. A Halloween Party and games were planned.

October 29—A hayride is planned and everyone was asked to be at Brother Robert and Sister Lydia Dobecka's house at 7 p.m. After the hayride we are going to have a wiener roast. Each one is also allowed to bring a friend for a fun evening.

October 30—District III meeting at Lodge 35 in Elk. We will be making a poster on activities for the year. I hope all our members can come to the meeting.

Dear Members, Our youth club had a bake and craft sale at Post Oak Mall Saturday, October 8th. The sale was a big success. We appreciate all the donated items.

We discussed our upcoming events and made a pretty craft. I performed a twirling routine for thd lodge.

There was not any old business, so we went to new business in which we discussed the District II Skating Party which was held Sunday, October 9th. Everyone had a real nice time, some of the members brought guests.

For new business, we also discussed having a Halloween Party at the hall; it will be Sunday, October 30 from 3 to 7 p.m. We will play many games. Everyone is asked to bring sandwiches, chips and dips or desserts. Everyone be sure to wear your costume. After we eat, we will have a hayride.

Before the meeting adjourned, we voted on giving the Child Abuse Association $25.

More Westfest Participants In The Cultural Program

ATTENDS FESTIVAL The youth club of Lodge 40 attended the 9th annual Texas Renaissance Festival near Plantersville, October 2nd. The club paid for the members and parents (chaperones) admission. There was good food and great entertainment for everyone.

There were Shakespeare plays and Robinhood plays. There were also games like archery, King of the log and Jacob's ladder. Some of the foods included: turkey legs, love knotts, sausage-on-a-stick, Scotch eggs, and empanadas; most enjoyable was ice cold Dr. Pepper.

Saturday activities will include a Youth Spectacular, which will be held at SPJST Lodge No. 47, Seaton, east of Temple, and which will involve a large number of young people from the various organizations entertaining the delegates. The Youth Spectacular will be held at 4 p.m.

Sunday morning's session will include reports from the several standing committees of the Texas Fraternal Congress and conclude with the election and installation of officers for 1983-84.

Delegates will be representing a combined total of approximately one million Texans who are members of the various fraternal Societies.

Organizations represented are the Aid Association For Lutherans, Knights Of Columbus, SPJST, KJT, KJZT, Western Fraternal Life Association, Grand Court Order Of Calanthe, Order Of The Sons Of Hermann, and Woodmen Of The World.

Sid Pokladnik, director of the SPJST of Dallas, is president of this year's Texas Fraternal Congress, and Walt Mueller of Houston is secretary-treasurer. Norma Andel of the SPJST Home Office Staff is secretary-treasurer of the Youth Section.

While there will be voting and non-voting delegates, the general public is invited to attend any or all of the sessions and especially the Youth Spectacular Saturday.

Henrietta Cervenka is attired in her Agnes Reznicek is dressed in her 100Kyjovsky kroj from the district of year-old kroj from Vlcnov, CzechosloKyjov, Moravia. Her costume was vakia. Her vest is made of wool and obtained in 1972 while visiting her the sleeves and blouse are made of relatives near Kyjov. The costume's flax material. She also has a pair of jeweled cap, embroidered blouse, vest, all leather handmade boots that came with spool heels that have horseshoe are over 75 years Old. caps and they are put together with wooden nails or pegs. A large head scarf is worn with her handmade costume.

Maxine Sefcik proudly wears her authentic Kyjov kroj where her paternal grandmother came from to the United States in 1900. Maxine's grandmother taught her Czech at an early age and she still speaks it fluently. She and her husband portrayed and had Czech/English roles at Lodge 88 "Hlahol" Dramatic Plays. She is one of the Westfest associate directors.

originated from Frydek and Mistek in Moravia. They are the second generation in the United States.

A group of friends, graduates of a secondary technical school, start working after their A-levels in a big industrial plant. From the word go they are disappointed when faced with the stereotype pattern of work at the plant. The boys feel depressed and sometimes rightly so wondering if they should forget their ambitions and whether all the theory and practical knowledge acquired will ever be of any use. All this of course leads to problems, conflicts, disillusions, resignation and chopping and changing jobs — new jobs financially more advantageous but in no way connected with their previous studies. As a result the youngsters concentrate on their personal and emotional problems.

authentic festive kroj, which is worn in the village of Bojanovice, and region called Podluzi, in the Breclav vicinity, near the Southern Moravian border, where folk art, costumes,

songs, dances, and old usages are still cherished.

Natlie Simcik is modeling a Czech costume from the Hluk village. She is also a Sokol West gymnast.

But even these get in the way of their work. Ondrej wants to spend the night with his girlfriend but Helena's parents are against it.

Cinda dreams about a trip to Paris, where his Aunt lives, so he is thrilled that he is released from compulsory army service. Ondrej and Cinda try to provoke the officials at a trade union meeting.

They only want to express their own different opinions concerning things happening around them. Discussions and conjectures arise from all this, especially with Ondra's father who is afraid that his son is going to ruin his career. The twelve months before army service begins are slowly coming to an end and the boy's dreams, too. Cinda's year ends tragically, but Ondrej gets his longed for hour of happiness — the last night before he leaves for the army he spends with Helena.

Walls celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, with their granddaughter, Veronica, all their relatives and friends at the Brethren Church in West at 10 o'clock October 9, 1983 when they renewed their wedding vows. The Rev. Lawrence Junek officiated at the impressive ceremony and he was assisted by Student Minister Danny Husak. A delicious noon meal followed the ceremony at the SPJST Lodge 54 Hall in West, Texas where nearly 300 guests attended the church services and reception. Kickirillo-Vrla Wedding Kelly Darlene Kickirillo and Frank Bob Vrla III were married in a double-ring ceremony at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Dallas.

The parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. Tony Kickirillo of Garland and Mr. and Mrs. Frankie B. Vrla of Dallas.

Accompanied by the organist, the vocalist Betsy Brown sang, The Wedding Song, We've Only Just Begun, You Light Up My Life, Ave Maria and Thee Our Father, during the Nuptial Mass.

The Unity Candle was lit by the mother of the bride escorted by Chris Pollard, son-in-law, and the bridegroom's mother escorted by her son, David.

The bride was given away by her father. She wore an elegant white designer gown made of sheer organza with a Queen Anne neckline, trimmed in crystal pleating, slender sleeves and the bodice of chantilly lace with an empire waistline and the gown had a scalloped overskirt bordered in crystal pleating and chantilly lace, and had an attached court train. Tiny covered buttons were at the closing of the back. Her veil borrowed from her sister Kim Pollard was a semi-crown with seed pearls and lace. A single strand of pearls which she borrowed from her mother was the bride's only jewelry.

The bride carried a bouquet of ivory and white silk roses, centered with an orchid and accented with

greenery. Surrounding the stem was a white linen embroidered handkerchief, a gift from the groom's maternal grandmother.

The groom wore an all white tuxedo with tails, cummerbund, pleated white shirt and white bow tie.

Maid of Honor was Sarah Trizza of Dallas, friend of the bride. Bridesmaids were Pam Vrla of Dallas and Kathy Vrla of Duncanville, both sisters-in-law of the groom. Sharmanyne Krizan, Bonnie Reid and Lynda Bolch, all of Dallas and friends of the bride. Flower girl was France Anna Campagna of Dallas.

She wore an all white gown of chiffon and lace and carried a basket of blue and white flowers.

The attendants wore a blue chiffon floor length dress with a scoop neckline that had a double flounce that gave a capelet effect and a blousion bodice with a catered skirt and a satin blue ribbon sash.

They carried bouquets of white, blue and yellow fresh flowers accented with greenery and ribbons.

Best man was David Vrla, brother of the groom. Groomsmen were Darrell Vrla of Duncanville, brother of the groom, Chris Pollard of Dallas, brother-in-law of the bride, Bill Fidler of Midland, Mike Janney of Houston and Richard Wade of Dallas, all. Texas Aggie friends of the groom. They wore light grey tuxedoes with vest, a white pleated shirt with a grey bow tie and a blue silk rosebud boutonniere. The fathers wore Grey Devin Tails with a cummerbund and white pleated

shirt and grey bow ties. They wore white fresh carnation boutonnieres.

The mother of the bride wore a pale yellow chiffon floor length dress with puffed sleeves and a pleated V-neckline. The bodice was fitted with a pale yellow belt. She wore a white orchid corsage with a yellow center.

The groom's mother wore a bluish hyacinth colored floor length chiffon with a high neckline and the gown had full softly flowing elbow length sleeves. The tiny folds of chiffon encircled the waist giving a cummerbund effect. The top layer of her double chiffon skirt was softly folded upward on both sides of the skirt. She wore a white orchid corsage with a brilliant wine center.

The maternal grandmothers Mary Sagnibene wore a long mint green chiffon and Inez Kickirillo wore a black colored long gown. Both had identical corsages of yellow and white carnations.

David Vrla read readings from the bible, Corinthians Chapter 13 verses 31-8, and Sarah Trizza read Ephesians Chapter 5, verses 2-22-31 before Frank and Kelly recited their wedding vows.

Altar boys were Charles Gordon, cousin of the bride and Stephen Whitley of Dallas.

After the ceremony, the bride presented her mother and the groom's mother with a long stemmed yellow rose. The bridegroom greeted his father and the bride's father with a warm gentle handshake.

The reception and buffet catered

by Bessie Petr was held immediately afterwards at the Sokol Athletic Center with approximately 400 guests attending. The Quintets of Dallas provided the music for dancing.

The 3-tiered bride's cake was

decorated in colors of blue and white. The groom's cake was a chocolate cake decorated with maroon colored icing with the letters from Texas A&M. The cake and punch, champagne, and buffet tables were decorated identical with white chiffon skirts, candelabra and greenery entwined with blue and white carnations.

The groom is a 1983 Texas A&M graduate in Petroleum Engineering.

He is a member of the Bill Kucera Czechmates Band of the surrounding area.

The bride is a 1983 Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader Semi-Finalist.

After a San Marcos honeymoon, the newlyweds are making their home in Garland.

The Vrlas are all members of Lodge 84, Dallas.

Palacky School

The Palacky / pronounced pah LAHTS kee/ School was located about five miles west of Granger, Texas. The school was named for the famous historian Frantisek Palacky, a native of the village of Hodslavice in north-eastern Moravia, a region of modern-day Czechoslovakia. Many Czech Moravian immigrants who settled in the Granger area came from this same area where Frantisek Palacky was born.

The Palacky School opened for the first time in 1908, according to Mrs. Marie /Parma/ Bartosh, was was the first teacher at the school. The pupils were Czech-Moravian, and Miss Parma taught in Czech and in English. The schoolhouse consisted of one room and it was built by Izydor Szyrocki, a farmer and immigrant from the village of Petrovice u Karvine in modern-day

It was at first a private school and was built so that the local children, who were often needed at home on the farm, did not have to travel into Granger to attend school.

There were originally forty-four pupils attending the school, including Henry Zurovetz, Louise Kubala, Rudolf Kubala, Louise Zurovetz, Bertha, Mary, Marcella, and Ed Zrubek, Anton Podraza, Ed Cernoch, Mary Cernoch, Ludmila Zbranek, Emilie, Mary, and Frankie Kaderka, Raymond Stastny, Rosie Tomecek, Hattie Janak, Frank and Sophie Zrubek, and Betty Martinka.

Families living in the area at the time included those of Ferdinand Kaderka, his sons Josef F. and Fred Kaderka, Frank Zurovetz, Louis Zrubek, Mrs. Hermina Janak, John Chovanec, Josef Stastny, Jr., Josef Stastny, Sr., Josef Martinka, Mrs. Kubala /Prcin/,) John Zurovetz, Karel Cernoch, William Cervenka, Josef Tomecek, Frank Naizer, Josef Zbranek, Izydor Szyrocki /Shirocky/, and the Hasak family. Some of the teachers at the Palacky School were Marie Parma, Jan Haisler, Tkac, Skinner, Miss Mikeska, Lydia Jurcak, Christina Svec, Louis Wilks, Lela Marquis, A vanelle Houston, Louise Houston, Ludmilla Slavik, Lura Wilks, Foy Wilks, Josephine Driska, Velma Bucek, Mrs. Alice /Cervenka/ Moore, Mrs. Daniel, Mrs. Beihan, Miss Barton, Mrs. Young, and Mrs. Brewster. The Palacky School was eventually enlarged to two rooms. About sixty students were enrolled in the late 1920s. The school closed in 1950.
