about a month ago SL Vice President Bernie Gebala came to Br. Otto with some small "Cheerio Oats" rings, (which is a cereal made of oats) and said; "You can grow everything; how about growing me a doughnut TREE; here is some seed from Texas A&M to start you on it." Br. Otto told your editor: "I cut a little oak tree, clipped off some of the leaves, put it in a pot and got a dozen doughnuts (those smallest kind) and stuck them on the limbs and, LO AND BEHOLD, a doughnut tree was placed on his desk. You should have seen his face when he came in. Silas took some pictures and I am enclosing a couple. If you can put them in the VESTNIK, with some humorous short story, we would all appreciate it here, but don't tell, Bernie; we want that as a surprise."

Here you are, Br. Otto and, please, see to it that Br. Gebala waters his "Doughnut Tree" regularly! "A little humor is the Spice of Life." ***

Sokol Zizka 7448 Greenville Ave. Dallas, Texas The following is some information on a Sokol Folk Dance Clinic to which the membership of SPJST is invited. We hope several groups choose to attend since we feel that it will be beneficial to the cause and due to the great expense, not likely to happen again soon.

CZECHOSLOVAKIAN WORKSHOP A Unique Experience Several members of the Sokol Greater Cleveland (Ohio) Czech Folk Dancers will be in Dallas, October 21 and 22 to present their workshop on Czech Songs, Dances, Costumes and Culture. This group, which was formed ten years ago, specializes in authentic Czech Culture. They are active in both teaching and performing. Dance instruction will be by Dolly Baca, Costumes and Costume care by Karen Berg, and Music and Song by Marian Pterka.

The dance group, which is easily one of the most active in the United States, has the philosophy that by combining voice, costumes, and originality with the traditional dance steps one can create a most enjoyable event for the participants as well as the spectators.

The goal of the workshop is to teach the key people of many different lodges (youth leaders, dance leaders, etc.) some new (to us) and creative ideas. In this way we can stimulate the interest in Czech Culture through folk dancing.

The schedule calls for teaching several different short dances and dance steps (no Besedas) and discuss how they can be combined to make an interesting presentation. Included will be the Boubleska Polka, Double Clap Polka, Tsenicka, Ceresnicky, Kalina, Trojak, and other Czech, Moravian, and Slovakian Dances. Most of these dances are done in circles.

Spread throughout the schedule will be discussions about Folk Dance history, costumes and costume care, songs and vocalizations, and a video tape of the Cleveland Dancers in action. The workshop promises to be interesting and not entirely physical.

The schedule is Friday, October 21, 7:30 to 10:30 p.m.: Introduction and ice breaker activities, short social dances, Moravian Dance, video tape. Saturday, October 22, 9:30 to 12:00: Slovak Dance, Folk Dance history, vocalizations and songs. From 1:00 to 6:00: Czech Dance, costume care, Moravian dance, lifts, and creative dance session.

The clinic is being presented through the joint efforts of the Sokol Greater Cleveland Folk Dancers, the Southern District of the American Sokol Organization and Sokol Zizka.

The location is Sokol Zizka, 7448 Greenville Avenue in Dallas. The registration fee will be $7.50 per person for dancers. Spectators are invited and encouraged. Lunch will be available Saturday, or, you may bring a sack lunch if you wish.

At 11:00 a.m. the meeting was called to order by 1st Vice President Robert Dobecka. President Vernon Wood was absent due to recent surgery.

Flag Bearer Shirley Dobecka came forward to lead the Pledge of Allegiance and recite the SPJST Motto.

Brother Jerry Milan, President of Lodge No. 154, extended a warm welcome to all present. He exp r essed his appreciation for the large attendance and the beautiful sunshine. He hoped everyone present would enjoy the meal, hospitality and a safe journey home.

Acting President Dobecka announced the need to appoint three members to audit the books. Sister Rose Uptmor, Brother Jerry Milan 452 and Brother Ben Jarma were 112 173 appointed.

174 Brother Dobecka asked if the 308 73 minutes from the Fall Meeting should be read or would the minutes 102 132 be accepted as published in the 169 Vestnik. Brother Sid Pokladnik 202 stated he would like to have (for the 122 Vestnik,) omitted the paragraph 206 264 pertaining to his report on the 120 computer being used in the home 215 office. A motion was made and 289 seconded to make the correction and 463 65 accept the minutes as published in 76 the Vestnik. Corrected sentence will 20 98 now read: Information can now be compiled much quicker, thus saving 100 '24'4 a considerable amount of money and 254 time.

267 Brother Joe Ondrusek, 2nd vice 326 president, read the list of departed 443 375 members. The membership stood in 386 a moment of silence in tribute to all 4 145 our departed brothers and sisters.

279 Brother Bernard Hlavaty, Sr, 419 secretary, read the correspondence. 172 A letter from Editor Brother Rudy 177 Sefcik expressing his regrets that 247 he could not be present for the 329 403 District III meeting; Brother Rudy 420 also commented on the nearness of 379 the convention and asked the lodges 380 190 to submit their lodge history to date 221 and mail this information to him in 294 3 West, and, if possible, enclose a black and white picture of lodge 101 164 officers. Brother Banik suggested the membership consider dispensing with the Certificate of Deposit being held in the Youth Camp Fund. Since the recent changes in the IRS rulings a certain percent of the interest earned on this Camp Fund Certificate would have to be filed with the IRS. A motion was made and seconded to accept the treasurer's report as read and to defer the discussion of the Camp Fund Certificate until later in the meeting when new business would be discussed.

Sister Bessie Petr, youth counselor, said she came with a long report. Sister Bessie informed the membership that the youth leaders were making plans for a great summer with YAD at Lodge 25, Ennis June 26; Summer Camp at Camp Val Verde, July 23 thru July 26; State YAD, August 21 in Temple at the Temple High School; and State Royalty, September 17 at Lodge 18 in Elgin.

Sister Bessie stated chaperones were needed, both Moms and Dads would be welcomed for the summer camp. She thanked the youth leaders and their assistants for their super job with the youth. New leaders named were: Cindy Russell and Assistant Phylis Smith - Lodge 180 Burleson, Emilie Baile - Lodge 183 Arlington, Rita Crosley and Assistants Glen McCampbell and Viola Kocian - Lodge 178 Longview, Adele Rejcek - Lodge 25 Ennis.

Training for leaders and assistants was held in Dallas at Lodge 84 with 23 persons attending.

Jann Wilson held the meeting. May 14, 15 the youth leaders retreat will be held at Camp Val Verde and is sponsored by the Supreme Lodge.

Make reservations before May 9th.

Sister Petr commented on the death of District III Youth President, Flag Bearer and Queen, Therese Dobecka, who was a very dedicated SPJST supporter and who will be greatly missed. Sympathy was extended to the Robert Dobecka family. Sister Petr asked the youth leaders present to stand and be recognized. This concluded her report.

Vestnik Editor Rudy Sefcik was unable to attend due to a recent cartrain accident. He sent his best wishes for a successful meeting.

Curator Brother Otto Hanus invited the membership to come visit the museum in Temple and see the stamp collection, wood carvings, the replica of a typical pioneer Czech cabin and many other interesting displays.

From the Office of the Financial Secretary

District III Director Sid Pokladnik was called on to give his report. He reported the two rest homes operating at full capacity with waiting lists. Both are in No. 1 condition and have the same administrators. Plans for the new wing at the home in Needville have been delayed for the present time due to some changes in the tax laws.

Brother Sid commented on the recent seminars held for the insurance sales representatives and thanked the representatives for their efforts and encouraged all to keep up the good work. Several nice prizes await salespersons with outstanding sales. Insurance representatives present were asked to stand and be recognized. Several of these representatives received bonus checks for their sales work.

Concerning lodge meetings, Brother Sid stated that, in order to belong to a fraternal society, meetings had to be held. Most lodges hold meetings once a month, but a few hold quarterly meetings.

Quarterly meetings must be approved by the Supreme Lodge. In order for a member to qualify to be a delegate to the convention, he or she must have attended the majority of lodge meetings for three years prior to the convention. If there are any questions concerning lodge meetings contact the Supreme Lodge before making changes.

Brother Sid presented two checks to the District III Youth Fund from the Supreme Lodge. The first in the amount of $2,361.25 for the 9,445 certificates at 25 cents held by members 16 and over as of December 31, 1982. The second check was for $400, an allocation for the General Expense Fund.

Brother Sid reported that Supreme Lodge President Nick Morris had called a special meeting with all 7 District presidents and vice presidents recently. The purpose was to discuss the idea of promoting a Family Day among the districts during their spring or fall meetings. In this way we would be insuring ourselves as a fraternal society. More information pertaining to a Family Day should be appearing in the Vestnik.

stressed by the National Fraternal Congress of America, which includes 100 fraternal societies, is a program for abused children. The home office is working on a program we can all be involved in. Then we will be carrying out the slogan of the President of the National Fraternal Congress of America for this year which is "Communicate Pride in Fraternalism." Brother Sid stressed the importance of all the lodges returning the forms listing all their donations and what has been done in their lodges on volunteer basis. This information is then sent to the National Fraternal Congress of America by Brother Leonard Mikeska.

At this point the meeting was recessed for lunch break by Brother Dobecka.

After lunch the membership was entertained by talented Bobby Cleveland and Dori Swyhart singing a selection of musical numbers. Both are members of Lodge 154.

Director Brother Sid continued his report by asking the membership to support their insurance sales representatives, bigger sales results in a larger 8% refund to their lodge.

He commented on the benefits from being a member of the SPJST, which include the Vestnik, loans for homes and farms, scholarships for high school graduates and youth programs. Brother Sid concluded his report by stating the convention for 1984 should be a good one. If anyone has any good ideas or would like to amend any of the by-laws send this information to John Murphy who is chairman of the By-Laws Committee; his address is listed in the Vestnik.

Brother Bernard Hiavaty, Sr., secretary, was asked to give the roll call of the lodges present. There were 10 lodges represented with a total of 79 members. Lodges represented included Lodge 6 Cottonwood, Lodge 35 Elk, Lodge 66 Waco, Lodge 84 Dallas, Lodge 92 Fort Worth, Lodge 130 Dallas, Lodge 154 Fort Worth, Lodge 178 Longview, Lodge 180 Burleson, and Lodge 183 Arlington.

The secretary then read the names of the 50-year members of District III. There was a total of 96

Wednesday, October 12, 1983—VESTNI.K/7 members named and 2 were present, Louis Kubala and Flora Koci; these were the 50-year members for 1982.

There were no visitors present for the spring meeting.

The meeting continued with Brother Jerry Milan of the Auditing Committee reporting the committee had gone over the treasurer's records and also the youth counselor's records and found all records to be in order.

Under unfinished business Brother Albert Banik stated that the Publications Committee had been meeting twice a year for 20 years or more and had always been paid for the gas mileage, meals and per diem. But somewhere along the line last summer someone discovered the article providing for this in the by-laws had been left out at the 64th Convention. The Publications Committee was advised by the Supreme Lodge that they would not be paid or would not be authorized to meet. Brother Banik stated that they have been meeting on their own in September and again in March and have been paying their own expenses and he wanted to let you know the Publications Committee planned to continue meeting and paying their own expenses.

Brother Sid then came forward to clarify the statement made that the Supreme Lodge told the Publications Committee they would not be allowed to meet. He said this was not true and they have a right to meet anytime, there was no conflict there. But according to the bylaws they could not be paid. Brother Sid agreed this should be brought up at the next convention so something could be worked out. There was no other unfinished business.

Under new business the Certificate of Deposit held by the Youth Club was discussed. Brother Albert Banik explained how under the new tax law regarding interest earned an income 'tax report would have to be filed with IRS and being the certificate was serving no purpose, since there was no intention of purchasing a youth camp, he suggested the amount of the certificate to be distributed to each lodge that has an active youth club. Brother Otto Hanus came forward and recommended the membership give $250 to the Therese Dobecka Memorial Fund and the balance to be distributed between the youth clubs of District III according to the membership of the club. Brother Banik pointed out the fair way would be for each youth leader of the lodges send in the number of active members at their meetings. Brother Hanus asked this to be put as a motion. The motion was seconded and passed.

The Nominating Committee was called on for the choice of officers for the next term. This committee consisted of Brother Henry Breitkreutz, Sister Mary Pavey, Brother Emil Petr, Brother Ben Jarma and Sister Willie Mae Schuetz.

Chairman, Brother Breitkreutz announced the following as officers: Brother Robert Dobecka President, Brother Joe Ondrusek 1st vice president, Brother Bernard Hlavaty, Sr. - 2nd vice president, Brother Daniel Roznovsky - secretary, Brother Albert Banik - treasurer, Sister Bessie Petr - youth Counselor, Sister Shirley Dobecka - flag bearer. Hosting the spring meeting will be Lodge 35 in Elk. Under other comments the family

day was again brought up by Brother Emil Petr and discussed among the membership. A motion was made and seconded to appoint a committee to look into the possibility of having a Family Day outing instead, of the District III meeting.

Appointed were Brother Jerry Milan, Sister Helen Kubala, Sister Rose Uptmor, Brother Arnold Vrla, and Brother Emil Petr.

Sister Bessie Petr gave a report of the youth meeting held today. The youth elected their officers as follows: Shirley Dobecka - president, Darrell Uptmore - vice president, Janice Stanislav - secretary, Darren Banik - treasurer, Donna Stanislav historian, Richard Burney-photographer for the South, and Larry Petter -photographer for the North.

In the youth treasury is $618.08 at the West Bank and $1,189.33 in the District III fund. Brother Eddie Banik was re-elected as assistant youth leader.

The Family Day Committee decided to meet for a brief meeting after the District III meeting.

Since there was no further business, Brother Robert Dobecka, acting as president in the absence of President Vernon Wood, adjourned the meeting.

District VII Family Day (Oct. 30, 1983)

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Those of you who attended the last District VII meeting in Floresvine will, I am sure, recognize that it was the best meeting, the most attended and the most with participants that many remember. I attribute this to each and everyone of you, be it small lodge in membership or large. The interest at the district level is growing and I predict will continue to grow because your voices are heard, action on your suggestions and opinions are discussed.

The results of your interest in one of the subjects brought up in our meetings over the past year is having a District Family Day (social) rather than a full meeting.

The plan is as follows: the event is hosted by Lodge 133 San Antonio; it will be held at Comanche Park No. 3, at 2600 Rigsby Ave. (in case of rain 1505 Gevers St.): the park opens at 10:00 a.m. and dinner will be served at 12:30 p.m. Note: Lodge will furnish the meat and bread.

Members and guests are asked to bring a vegetable and a dessert.

I urge everyone to attend this event and bring your guest if you like; this is also an occasion to show the public what we experience in fraternalism.

I challenge each lodge president in District VII to attend and, in return, you challenge my giving a special treat to the one that has the most members in attendance at the event--Oct. 30, 1983.

After much deliberation and talking with my wife, Polly, we have decided to run again, so, I hereby announce my candidacy for District VII director to be elected at the XXIV SPJST Convention in Corpus Christi, Texas.

I have served District VII before as your director (1977 through 1980).

13th Meeting For Lodge 6

The monthly meeting of SPJST Lodge Cottonwood was held Sunday, October 2, 1983 at 3 p.m.

Terry and Keith Hykel led the Pledge of Allegiance and Terry then led the SPJST Motto. Everyone remained standing for a moment of remembrance of our departed Brother, Anton Pavlas.

All reports were given and approved as read.

Sister Schuetz gave a youth club report. The club donated glass to the West Czech Folk Dancers. They will be collecting glass for them again in January. They donated paper to the St. Mary's CYO paper drive for September 24, and they will take a cake for birthdays in October to the West Rest Home. The club will be going to Six Flags October 16th. The club will be having a bake sale October28th at the Leroy Bank. The youth will be deciding when they are going to have their Halloween Party. They will be donating items to the kitchen. We need all the

Campbell labels everyone can save

by November 5th, Terry Hykel brought the birthday cake.

Brother Johnnie Krizan gave the Board of Trustees' report. The trustees decided we need to go back and finish the work on the outside of the hall. They will be setting some work dates.

The lodge thanks Mary Sumbera for donating her freezer to the hall; we will be using it for Westfest. Sister Sumbera, your thoughtfulness is very much appreciated!

The $10 door prize was drawn by Martha Prnka, not present; $10 door prize drawn was Sandra Barton, not present; $6.00 progressive door prize drawn was Donna Snider, not present; and the $2 door prize was won by Cyril! Srvcek.

The next Board of Trustees meeting will be held Friday, November 11 at 8 p.m. Our next regular meeting will be Sunday, November 13 at 3 p.m.

Lodge 13 To Donate To Local Projects Dear Members: Our last monthly meeting was held Friday, September 16, 1983 at approximately 7 p.m.

President Claude Flippin called the meeting to order. The recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance followed.

There were 12 members, 7 officers present and 6 absent.

Sister Dorothy Rackel then read the secretary's minutes. Magdalene Iselt gave the mortuary report, and Sister Doris Balcar gave the treasurer's report. All of these reports were approved and accepted as read.

A discussion was held whether or not we buy from the church and fire department on their auctions. A motion was made that we should buy from both: the church and fire department. This motion was voted upon and carried.

A motion was also made that the lodge buy 500 more beer tokens for picnics and that the beer cans be thrown in the trailer and be worth 10 cents. This will help out the lodge with the cleaning up of beer or sodawater cans.

Since there was no further business, the door prizes were drawn. Winners were: 1st — Mary Kubena, 2nd — Lucille Leitco, 3rd— Albina Milburn.

A motion was then made that the meeting be adjourned.

Our next monthly meeting will be held at its regular time: 2 p.m.

SPJST Has Membership Picnic Ellinger

The 1983 membership picnic of the Ellinger SPJST lodge held Sunday, Sept. 18, at the Ellinger C. of C. Recreation Center was declared another success.

Approximately 140 members and their families were in attendance and participated in the delicious

Mrs. Erna Girndt, a 40-year-member said the table grace.

Following the meal, Ludwig F. Kocian, president of the Ellinger lodge, called the meeting to order.

The secretary, D. A. Juren read the minutes and continued to give a brief report of the lodge's financial and membership status.

The secretary-treasurer also spoke on the subject of past and present activities of the lodge. He stressed the need and importance of the members' participation in all lodge meetings. "The Ellinger SPJST Lodge No. 51 has 201 members with 219 certificates," Mr. Juren said.

The members unanimously voted to hold another picnic in 1985.

For 8th Lickskillet Told

Activities

Fayetteville's Eighth Annual Lickskillet Day full of food and fun is coming up on Sunday, Oct. 16.

Lickskillet will be held on the square in Fayetteville, beginning at 10:30 a.m. which will be highlighted with the crowning of the queen. An old-fashioned pit barbecue will be served beginning at 11:30 a.m. with beef and pork to go at 10 a.m. Adult plates are $4 while children under 12 are $2.50.

Entertainment will be provided by the Gil Baca Band during the day with contests for beer drinking, hairy legs, kolache eating and a tricycle pull. Additionally there will be food and game booths with an auction at 2 p.m.

This year Steve Smith from Houston's Newscenter 11 will be at the celebration with his wife and two children as guests of the Fayetteville Chamber and the Lickskillet Inn. All proceeds from the day will be used for community activities, further development of community park and restoration of the SPJST Hall located at the park. .

84 Members All Set For State Fair

Dear Members: Flag Bearer Cheri Petr led the members at our last meeting in the Pledge to our flag. We also observed a moment of silence for a departed member, Brother Jerry Houpy, Vice President Ron Cok , gave the entertainment report after which Youth Leader Bessie Petr reported on the youth. She also reported two circles of Beseda danced at the Westfest.

Sister Salac reported the Special Committee will have a bake sale November 19 at Rudolph's.

Brother Ben Jarma was absent so the softball report next month will be a long one.

Brother Emil Petr reported the Czech Culture Society has completed all preparations for the Czech Day at the Fair, October 16th.

Brother Emil also reported on the hall rental scheduled dates.

Our new members for September included Steven, Geraldine, Stephanie and Thomas Reardon. We hope these members come and let all the members get to know them soon.

Important dates to circle on your kitchen calendar are: October 15—Our Saturday Dance before the Sunday, October 16 day at the Fair it's also our harvest dance (you know, that hanging fruit above the dance floor, just waiting for some brave person to pluck it without being caught). Please come and welcome all of the out-of-state folks who have come to the fair and will be attending a "Dallas Dance" here at 2625 Floyd Street. The Czech Mates will be playing music for the dance.

October 30 —Halloween Dance on a Sunday afternoon from 4 to 8 p.m.

Music will be by The Melody Masters. If you come dressed for the occasion (in costume), you will be able to dance 4 hours for one-half price ($2.00) for 17 years and up; of course, our under 17 years group gets in free as usual.

November 5 — The Mikula Band from Ennis, Texas will play for us.

November 19 —It's the Czech Mates playing again for your pleasure.

November 20 — Sunday, the Polka Club has its dance here, with the Texas Dutchmen of Houston playing fine music. If you are a member of the Polka Club, then you know how much fun these dances are.

More news on this Sunday afternoon dance will be coming so circle the date for sure and come dance, dance, dance.

Sunshine Lady Sister Dorothy Prasifka reported the following was sent a get-well card: Nathan Kopecky.

Baby congratulations to Sister Jo Ann and Dennis Buchert; a baby girl. Brother Jerry and Sister Justine Kutil are the grandparents, Baby congratulations (a boy) for Maryann and Charles Dees. Grandparents are Mary and Charles Nemec.

It's a baby girl for the Edward Coopers, Jr. Grandparents are Ed and Louise Cooper.

A congratulations card was also sent to Debbie and Bill Kerr (parents) and Johnnie and Geraldine Becan, grandparents.

Our sympathy goes to our Brother Raymond and Sister Faye Rejcek on the loss of Faye's brother, and to the family of John Houpy. May our loved ones have eternal rest.

Lodge No 88 To Observe Annual Czech Day October 23rd is Lodge 88's annual observance of CZECH DAY and this year promises to be better than ever!

A delicious turkey and dressing dinner with all the trimmings will be served during the noon hours, beginning at 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be booths of taste-tempting foods that can be purchased all during the day. There will be sausage-on-the-stick, sausage-on-abun with or without sauerkraut, stuffed dumplings, pasteries and even a wine booth. There will be lots of cold drinks to be enjoyed too!

There will be music under the Gazebo; the Schultz Family will give you music and song from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Aces, from Fayette County, will be playing Czech and German music for your listening pleasure from 3 to 7 p.m.

There will be a variety of funfilled carnival rides for the young and the adults, too.

Continuous entertainment within the Chandelier Ballroom is to be highlighted by our traditional Parade of Czech Costumes at 5 o'clock. The Lodge 88 Concert Orchestra, under the direction of Mr. Rudy Dybala, and the Lodge Choral Group, under the direction of Mr. Tim Kostom, will sing and play during the noon hour of 11 a.m. to 12 noon. Beginning at 12:30 The Len-K Band will play mixed music for your dancing pleasure until 4 p.m.

The Sokol of Houston Gymnastic group will perform from 4 to 4:30 p.m. in the Chandelier Ballroom.

88 Czech Concert Orch. to Perform at State Fair Lodge

Dear Members and Friends: The time is at hand again to enjoy Czech Day at the Texas State Fair in Dallas, Sunday, October 16, 1983.

The SPJST Lodge 88 Czech Concert Orchestra, the SPJST Choral Group, and Beseda Dancers, a troupe of almost 100, will be there to enjoy the festivities as well as perform for the audience. We will arrive about 11 a.m. by chartered buses, thanks to the Lodge 88 generosity. We hope many, many of you decide to come to the Fair on this special day "Czech Day," set apart in honor of our Czech Heritage.

By the way, we will have our own Czech Day at Lodge 88 the following Sunday, October 23rd. The place is 1435 Beall Street in Houston. All of you are also cordially invited to visit with us and enjoy the Festivities at Lodge 88.

107 Youth Received $500 Scholarship

Our regular meeting was held September 11, 1983 at the lodge hall.

President Bayer called the meeting to order and Stacy Bielefeld led the Pledge.

Helen Bayer was reported on the sick list and Anton Svoboda had a broken ankle. Amanda Burleson also had an ankle injury.

Jeffry Sralla was the recipient of a $500 Scholarship from the SPJST. We, of Lodge 107 are very proud of Jeffry, and are confident that the money will help him achieve his goal in life.

Reports from the secretary, financial secretary and treasurer were read and approved.

Youth Leader Polly Bayer announced that the youth clubbers were making flowers to decorate the queen's float, Amanda Burleson is the District VII Queen and she will ride the float representing Lodge 107 and Distric VII SPJST. All members were reminded to be sure and attend the October meeting because this will be work day in preparation for the Peanut Festival.

President Bayer also reminded the members that November is election month. This year is delegate election time so all members please come choose whomever you want for your delegate. Local officers are also to be elected. Both are vitally important to the benefit of our local lodge. Now, at the election, is the time to voice your approval or disapproval of the government of our lodge.

San Antonio & Victoria Czech Singers Enjoy Party The San Antonio Czech Choral Club and Victoria Czech Singers were guests at the Janak's Gardners' Retreat in Shiner, Texas, September 25th. The groups were invited by Rita and Leo Janak to come out and enjoy themselves at their beautiful lake. The ducks at the beautiful lake, plus the beautiful and completed social building was really something to see.

We arrived at the beautiful grounds at 11 a.m. and, of course, Leo was there to greet us with his hands full of those good suds, which was for the men, and Rita greeted the ladies with smaller cups that tasted real good and was potent. All of us admired the place so much, walking along the lake, watching the ducks, and just having a real good time.

At 1 p.m., we all heard a loud noise that sounded like a big bell, but it was Rita banging on a large pot, letting us know that dinner was being served; the amount of variety food, pastry consisting of so many goodies; it is indescribable. The dinner could not have been made any better. The barbecue cooks (I didn't get all the names, therefore, I will not try to mention any,) the barbecue was the best I have eaten in a long time.

After dinner both singing groups got together and we sang some of the many songs that everyone likes.

After the Czech singers quit singing, I am almost sure, that one of the Janak boys got his accordion and everyone joined in; the singing by all was real good, especially after the second barrel of suds was tapped by Leo who made sure that no one went dry; he made his rounds with the pitcher and cups all afternoon.

On behalf of both singing groups from San Antonio and Victoria, we thank Leo and Rita with all our hearts for the invitation, and we hope that we can, some day, return their pleasant consideratons. Thank you, both!

Leo and Rita are owners of the Janak's Nursery in Shiner, Texas, which is well-known throughout the State of Texas. If you are driving down Highway 90-A, stop by and see the wonderful nursery.

the country or just plain fishing. We didn't have the chance to go to too many places because I was bedridden and under doctor's care.

After Alicia made its vicious appearance in the Houston-Pasadena area, it caused thousands of people to stay around the house to cleanup the debris, etc.

It is also time for me to go back to work after a lengthy time convalescing after my incident at work. My wife, Esther, has to work so hard even with a sledge hammer to tear down our wooden fence to be replaced by a chainlink fence. I helped her with some of the debris.

We wished that it was a weekend like it was when participating in the Deer Park Festival and wearing our Czech costumes. Brother Joseph Machann was nice to furnish his truck in the parade which was viewed by a large crowd. From Lodge 172 there were 6 persons dressed up in their Czech costumes, namely, Joseph Machann, past lodge President Daniel and Margie Berry, Esther and John T. Mikeska, Carla Jo Krenek and Laverne Jackobs. In the parade were also familiar people campaigning for government positions. The parade was 4 1/2 miles long and we enjoyed throwing away 8 lbs. of gum/candy to the children along the sidewalks. Our truck was the most beautiful decorated float, with the United States and Czech flags, plus lots of crepe paper and our lodge's name and location. Those of you who were unable to attend the parade missed many things of interest.

Brothers and Sisters, remember our upcoming social for October 30th with music by the Vanek Band from Victoria. We extend an invitation to all of you, also watch the Vestnik for further details.

Dear Members and Friends: We had to change the time of our last meeting Sunday, October 9th to 2 p.m. instead of 3 p.m. because those who wanted to go to the 45th anniversary at Lodge 92.

We also had a Country/Western Dance with a new band called The Country Junction for Saturday, October 29. Jerry Max Lane will be back October 29th.

Sisters Maria Prill and Eva Dockery and family enjoyed a 3week visit with Mr. Hoffman from Germany. Sunday, Sister Prill with her leg in a cast, departed for Germany with Mr. Hoffman where she will recuperate. The doctor told her it would be 6 months to a year before she can walk; she is going to try and prove them wrong. Good luck!

We have been enjoying a little cooler weather and waiting patiently for some much-needed rain.

Dear Members: The special Mexican Dance held Saturday, October 1 was a success.

The lodge wishes to thank everyone who came (especially the visitors). A group of dancers from Dallas came over to do some special Mexican dances for everyone's enjoyment.

They were Gus Oritz, leader and singer, and Cleveante Navarrete, Pilar New, MaEugenia Aguayo, dancers. The music for everyone's dancing pleasure was by Los Exclusivos (leader was DeRamon Sustaita, (214) 253-7926); anyone interested in a good Mexican band can contact him. The music was different for a Czech with a touch of Irish and Gracie and I were still in our German costume from Octoberfest in downtown Fort Worth) which made for a good time all around.

The lodge wishes to send best wishes to Carla Roznos, daughter of Jeanie and Eugene Roznos, and Steve Maths, son of Raymond Matus of West on their upcoming wedding for October 29th to be held at West; several of Lodge 183 in Mid-Cities' members are planning to be there.

SPJST Lodge 84 Dallas Softball Team Report Dear Brothers and Sisters: Wednesday night, September 14, 1983, we played Duncanville and we won a real good game by the score of 4 to 3. Winning pitcher was Danny Yates who pitched 3 innings allowing 5 hits, 1 run, no walks and 1 strikeout. Don Jarma pitched 2 innings allowing 2 hits, 6 walks and 2 runs.

Leading hitters were Dan Palm with 3 walks, Don Lennox with a double, Al (Bino) Vrana 2 singles, Danny Yates a single and a walk, Tom Stites a double, Darrell Clements a double and Jerry Manak a walk.

We found out Don Lennox could catch, he turned in a fine performance behind home-plate.

Wednesday night, September 21, we almost didn't play because only 8 players showed up and I, so we took the field and managed to get through the game despite the fact I had to play right field. We played the Bandits Team and they beat us by a score of 2 to 1. Lionel Schulz hurled a fine game allowing 7 hits, 2 walks and 3 strikeouts.

Hitters for the game were Dan Palm with a double, Paul Bartos with a single, Don Jarma a single, Danny Yates with a walk, Lionel Schulz with a walk, Jerry Manak with a single and "old" Ben Jarma with a single.

Our last league game was scheduled for September 28 at 8:20 p.m. at the Samuel Grand Diamond No 2, which closed a double season for us.

The weekend of September 30 and October 1 and 2, the team went to Lake Whitney for their annual fishing trip, hopefully to catch some fish.

September 17 and 18, the annual Lodge 84 Czech Fest was held and the Softball Team was again in charge of the pastry booth and cake walk. We would like to express our thanks to all of our lodge members who brought cakes, cookies, pies, buchtas and kolace; we had a very successful day.

Our thanks also to those who worked and helped us in the booth or with the cake walk; it was deeply appreciated.

Frank died a few months after they came to America and is buried at Dubina, where they lived. Tereza remarried she married Rudolf Cadwell and had the following children: Emil, Rudolf and Tereza, Tereza married Frank Simek and had the following children: Frank, August, Eddie, Emila married Frank Jalufka, Albina married Julius Studney and Mary married John Marek.

The noon meal will be catered; resume YAD early in the afternoon. We plan to finish by 5. — NAM. *4.* STATE YAD — 1984 To All Concerned: I had previously announced that the 1984 State YAD (including Royalty) was tentatively set for Sunday, August 19th.

In a recent communication from the Temple ISD Business Office, we were requested that, if possible, to schedule this event a little earlier next year. The custodial staff was in somewhat of a bind this year because they had to work into the night to get everything cleaned and ready for an all-day in-service training program for the Temple ISD faculty the next morning.

Therefore, to accommodate our good friends at Temple High School, we are scheduling the 1984 State YAD one week earlier — namely,

Sunday, August 12th. As I stated previously, we will most likely start the day's activities around 10:30 a.m., take an hour for lunch and resume early in the afternoon.

The Youth club of Cottonwood lodge held their meeting Sunday, October 2, 1983 following the adult meeting.

Our youth club donated to the chapel at the West Rest Home in memory of Rev. Svrcek. They are collecting glass for West Folk Czech Dancers and donated to the West CYO paper drive. Our club will be donating to the Gerald Church Bazaar.

The club will have a hayride and wiener roast Saturday, October 29 at 7 p.m.; the club will furnish the wieners and drinks, trimmings will be furnished by the members.

Youth members are to bring items for the kitchen by the next meeting.

They are getting items together to help replenish the kitchen.

The club donated $25.00 to Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz for all the time and gas spent getting items to Westfest and bringing all the crafts Friday night.

Birthdays in October are for Delton Stuckly, Terry Hykel, Lanette Hykel and Tori Grmela.

Terry Hykel will bring the cake for November. The meeting will be November 13th.

Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club held their monthly meeting October 2 at 2:30 p.m.

President Vicki Dorotik brought the meeting to order. Kristi Korenek led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Jennifer Dluhos said the prayer.

We discussed the District VI meeting which will be held October 23rd in Hillje. We will be having a booth; and, if any members would like to donate something to this project, please get your items to Mrs. Dorotik as soon as possible.

For the contest, everyone was asked to make a Halloween mask.

Winners in 6-9 age group were: 1stCraig Dorotik, 2nd-Stephanie Roye, 3rd-Valerie Roye. In 10-12 were: 1stMarcy Dorotik, 2nd-Michael Milder.

In 13-17 were: 1st-Michelle Srubar, 2nd-Jean Dorotik, 3rd-Vicki Dorotik.

We donated to the Muscular Dystrophy on Labor Day. Birthdays in October are for Jean Dorotik and Michelle Srubar.

After the meeting we played games and made craft.

Mrs. Roye and Mrs. Milder then served refreshments of doughnuts, cookies and punch.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 87, in behalf of the officers and entire membership wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of VIRGIE K. SANTO, who passed away in a Temple Hospital.

She resided at 1213 West Avenue G, Temple, Texas, and was 77 years old.

Services for Mrs. Santo were held at Hewitt Funeral Home Chapel in Temple, with Reverend Theiss Jones officiating.

Mrs. Santo was born in Plainview, Texas and had lived most of her life in Temple. She owned and operated a grocery store and a lounge in Temple before illness forced her retirement.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Temple and of SPJST Lodge No. 87.

She is survived by her son, Johnnie Santo of Temple.

Resolution Committee, Evelyn Salac Linda Coker Joseph Ondrusek

-SPJST EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 88, on behalf of the entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of HUBERT HENRY JAKUBIK 51, who passed away Wednesday, September 7, 1983 in the Burleson County Hospital following a lengthy illness. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and SPJST Lodge No. 88.

Brother Jakubik was born February 11, 1932, in Snook, the son of the late Henry and Christina (Orsak) Jakubik. He grew up in Snook, graduating from Snook High School. He joined the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean War, and was honorably discharged in 1955. He was married to Kathryn Manas in 1955 in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Caldwell. They lived in Bryan and Houston several years, moving back to Caldwell in 1975. He was employed at Nagel Manufacturing and Supply Company.

His survivors are wife, Kathryn Jakubik; son, Karl Hubert Jakubik; daughters, Mrs. Joe (Connie Kathryn) Paul and Sharon Amelia Jakubik; grandson, Jason Christopher Paul, all of Caldwell; brother, Leroy R. A life-time resident of Burleson

County, he grew up in Deanville and attended public school there. He was a farmer and a rancher in the Deanville Community. He was manager of Invader Boat Builders in Deanville and Giddings for several years.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Deanville and had served on the Church Council Board for several years. He was also a member of the Deanville ODHS Lodge and the SPJST Lodge No. 186.

He was married to Annie Privetz June 28, 1928 in the Methodist Parsonage in Caldwell.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Annie Helweg of Deanville; one son, Barry Helweg and daughter-in-law, Martha of Mexia; brother-in-laws: Albert Lehman and Byron Privetz and sister-in-law, Iris Privetz of Mayback; Charley Camphell sister-in-law, Marie Camphell of Austin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Ozella Lehman; and three brothers Henry, Bill and Oswald.

Pallbearers were E. Dee Kristof, Byron Privetz, Leroy Schwartz, Charlie Camphell, Emmitt Wolz, James Privetz and Early Wiederhold.

Your editor recently received the latest Al Grebnick LP record for the American-Czech Hour Program.

The Al Grebnick Orchestra of Schuyler, Nebr. has released their 26th LP, 8 track, and cassette on the Nebraska label. This release celebrates Al Grebnick's over 50 years in the dance business, and over 5,000 dances played by him.

Tunes are Black Gypsy, Linden Tree, Fisherman's Love, The Bird Dance, I Love to Schottische and others.

Apparently, some insurance companies assume bigness will be the key to their survival.

In our opinion, that's a faulty assumption.

Witness the dinosaur. Being big didn't save him. In fact, it probably hastened his demise.

For the dinosaur grew too large for his limited brain. As a result, signals took too long to get from one part of the body to another. In the end, he simply couldn't respond quickly enough to change.

The real issue — then and now — is flexibility. Adapting to a changing, often confusing, environment.
