Ilubenak Received Award The enciuseu piLidie shows Katherine Wokaty of Lodge No. 32, Victoria, Texas, presenting her great grandfather's music box to Mr. Otto Hanus May 28, 1983. This box belonged to Josef H. Shiller who was also the father of the late, beloved Dr. John J. Shiller of Rowena. The box was given to Mrs. Wokaty's mother when Josef H. Shiller broke up his household after the death of his wife. The box is around 140 years old.

Meet The Square Dancers From the Newest Lodge 191 in Lufkin

Paul Hubenak, 20, served as a staff photographer last fall and spring. A 1981 graduate of Arling ton Heights High School, he plans to transfer as a computer science major to UT A next fall.

He was awarded second place in feature photos by the Texas Community Press Association and an honorable mention in news photos by the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association at a journalism convention held in Dallas this spring.

Also an art enthusiast, he has received several awards for his works, including being accepted into the 1982 TCJC "Works on Paper" exhibit.

Paul, in his fifth semester at the Northwest campus, says he is really looking forward to working as photo editor.

Miss Burleson Selected Festival Representative Miss Amanda Suzanne Burleson has been selected by SPJST Lodge 107, Floresville to be their representative in the annual Floresville Peanut Festival in Floresville, Texas. Amanda is the 1983 District VII Queen for SPJST and selected as the first runner-up for Queen at the State competition in Elgin in September.

Amanda is a senior at Floresville High School and is involved in many activities. She is on the Varsity Volleyball team, a member of the Speech and Drama Club, OEA Club, and the Computer Club. She is a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and taught second grade during Bible School this past summer.

Amanda is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Burleson, Sr. who are both members of the adult lodge.

Amanda's duchess for SPJST is Miss Jacqueline Marie Burleson, her sister, who attends Floresville Elementary School.

Amanda would like to thank the SPJST for selecting her as their representative.

ATTENTION TO OUR CORRESPONDENTS!

Too much of our mail has been arriving Friday morning. This delays us very much and we will have to delay your letters for one week. We have tried to rush them in, however, it causes problems at the printshop. MAIL EARLIER! *** October 16th will be the 43rd annual Czech Day at the State Fair in Dallas and it promises to be another eventful occasion.

Those of you who plan to attend will have an opportunity to witness National folk dancing, instrumental numbers by the live music of the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra under the direction of Brother Sid Pokladnik; there will also be the Lodge 88 Concert Orchestra with Rudy Dybala conducting and accompanying the Choral Club of Houston, plus a large variety of Southern District Sokol Exhibitions will be seen elsewhere on the fairgrounds.

We understand that there will be singers from Nebraska performing also.

Many of you may be interested to know that Brother Roszypal of WFLA from Cedar Rapids, Iowa will be the principal speaker. *** It is so true that membership in a fraternal benefit society is more than just the keeping in force of a life insurance certificate. Membership can be more meaningful and more valuable to you only when you, yourself, contribute, to some extent, to the success of functions planned for the participation of the membership. As members, you are important things to the successful conduct of the activities undertaken within the organization for the benefit of its members; you must assure its continued process and growth, so, in turn, the SPJST Society may be better able to support its goals. The mere keeping of your premium account in good order does not fulfill the obligation or responsibilities of membership in your lodge and your Order.

The below poem reminds the editor of some of the frequent places he attended during his many travels within our past decade or so: "The Always Faithful Few".

What would be the fate of lodges That have so much to do?

They surely would go under But for the faithful few. *** Handgun and firearm involvement in U.S. homicide are at their lowest levels in 16 years, and gun-related crime continued to drop in 1982, according to figures released Sept. 11 in the 1982 FBI Uniform Crime Reports.

The number of serious crimes reported to police dropped 3 percent last year, while the overall crime rate dropped 4 percent, the largest decline since 1977. The gun-related crime rate fell 7 percent. Federal authorities in general credited the drops to citizen crime prevention programs and the courts getting tougher with criminals.

According to the FBI data, there were 8,474 reported handgunrelated homicides last year, compared to almost 9,200 in 1981 and more than 10,000 in 1980. The FBI reported last year that handguns were involved in approximately 50 percent of the U.S. homicides; this year the reported figure was less than 44 percent.

Firearm involvement in robbery fell to the lowest level ever measured by the FBI, which started keeping track in this category in 1974, and there were 7 percent fewer gun-related robberies in 1982 than 1981.

The FBI also reported that firearm involvement in aggravated assault has not been lower since 1967, and firearm involvement in overall violent crime continued a downward drop that began in 1974.

According to data compiled by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, per capita handgun ownership in the U.S. has increased 32 percent between 1974 and 1982; the FBI Uniform Crime Reports showed that the domestic homicide rate — family members killing family members — actually fell 32 percent during the same time period.

National Rifle Association officials said the drops, which generally have continued in recent years without the enactment of additional federal gun laws, show that more gun laws are not needed in the U.S. and that increased gun ownership by law-abiding citizens acts as a deterrent to crime. ***

SEBESTA REUNION The Sebesta reunion will be held Sunday, October 16, 1983 at the SPJST Hall at Snook, Texas. A covered dish meal will be served at 12:15 p.m. and every family is asked to bring enough food for their family; the forks, knives, plates, tea and coffee will be furnished. If you are in any way connected with the Paul Sebesta family, come out and meet your relatives and enjoy a day of fellowship.

SPJST Bowling Team :Are Champions

Dear Members: This is to inform you of the approaching XXIV SPJST Convention to be held in Corpus Christi, Texas on June 18-20,1984.

The By-laws direct me to notify each lodge as to the number of qual ified votes so they may elect the proper number of delegates to the convention. I will be forwarding this information to each local lodge secretary during the first week of October. Leonard Mikeska (Secre tary-Treasurer) will also forward the required forms in reporting the qualified delegates to the Home Office.

Indications are that the number of delegates will be the largest ever.

My computations show that the lodges will be entitled to a total representation of 390 delegates as compared to 375 delegates at our last convention.

By Thelma Hrncir About twenty-eight members of Lodge 79, Corpus Christi attended the "Child Abuse and Neglect" program following their monthly meeting September 14 at the lodge home. The program was presented

by Thelma Hrncir, State Project Coordinator, and Ms. Rita Lake, and Beto Martinez, both workers with the Children's Protective Services, DHR of Region 8. The SPJST filmstrip was presented and a discussion period followed, during which the workers explained the needs of Nueces County and the area.

Monday, September 19, Lodge 88 in Houston, hosted the program presented by Director Hrncir, Mrs. Judy Hay, Charles Ternes, and three other workers from Region II. Helping with local arrangements were District V Director Louis Hanus, and Lodge 88 President Larry Pflughaupt.

Both lodges are scheduled to select a Fraternal Affairs Director at their next meeting to coordinate the projects needed by the Children's Protective Services and of special interest to the individual lodges.

Several members and lodges have expressed interest in the new SPJST Child Abuse and Neglect Project. If members would like to know of local needs, suggested projects, or just general information before the SPJST filmstrip and program are presented to their lodges, I am listing the contact people for each district. Please feel free to call these people, offer your services, or get answers to your questions. They stand ready to help you in any way.

News About District V Family Day

Dear Members: It is this Sunday that we have the District Family Day at Lodge No. 88, 1435 Beall Street, Houston. Lodge No. 88 is cooperating and helping to make it an enjoyable occasion. The Board of Trustees have lowered the prices on soda water and beer; thank you, board members!

The covered dish dinner starts at 12:30. The district furnishes the meat and you bring a covered dish—salad, vegetable, or casserole.

As I have stated before, if it is easier for you members of distant lodges to bring a cake or pastry, please do so.

You ladies, I hope you bring those beautiful quilts and hand-made spreads for us to enjoy! There will also be a booth having beautiful articles from Czechoslovakia and another booth having Czech costumes, and I think we all will enjoy those very much.

I was hoping that some of you tal ented members of other lodges would plan to be on our program.

Remember that anyone of any age can participate: this is a get-together for the entire family, so if you can sing, dance, recite or play an instrument, you should be on the program, and it's never too late to get on it—even if you don't tell me 'til Sunday!

The program will start at 2 p.m. and will include various numbers besides a comical wedding by adults.

Weinart Grohmann will entertain us with his fine accordion music.

So do plan to come and help us have a great family day!

Our regular monthly meeting was held September 11. Our president Lil Matejka and her husband, Rudolph, had their entire family at the Vrazel's dance the night before. They celebrated their 40th anniversary.

President Matejka announced that she will not be an officer of the lodge next year. She has been a consistent worker for many years and at the present time is both president and co-hall manager. We wish her well in her "rest" where she simply becomes an active member. We will have to elect a new hall manager at the next meeting, October 9.

19 Meeting For Lodge 40

Dear Friends and Vestnik Readers: The regular monthly meeting of the El Campo-Hillje Lodge 40 was held Wednesday, September 21, 1983 at 7:30 p.m.

The meeting was called to order

by President James Kulcak. The Pledge of Allegiance was followed by a minute of silence for our dear, departed members.

We received a nice thank you note from Sister Dora Lee Kopecky for flowers when she was ill. We are glad to see she has made a speedy recovery. (Sister Kopecky and her husband are two of our ever-faithful workers for Monday night Bingo.)

Thanks to Sister Margie Kulcak who runs the kitchen and also Sister Rita and Brother Fra,nkie Vanek. We do appreciate all the work you all put in to making our Bingo a success.

President Kulcak received more communications from Bob Bullock (more rules and regulations and a handbook on Bingo). Many thanks go to President Kulcak, who works hard to keep us straight with our Bingo. James, we've heard nice compliments on the way you operate things!

We've had some discussion about being unable to send flowers upon the death of some of our members. A vote was taken and we will now be sending a cash gift to the Scholarship Program in memory of our deceased members. You will then later see their names in the Vestnik.

Roll call by Secretary Linda Rubesh showed all officers were present. There was a minor revision to the minutes of last month's meeting. I failed to report there will be a cash door prize given monthly at all but the December meeting. It will vary in amount by the number of members present. The more members present, the bigger the cash prize! The winner of this month's door prize was Sister Dora Lee Kopecky.

Treasurer Leona Macha gave detailed reports on all our bank accounts Bills were paid for trash hauling, carpentry supplies and repairs, postage expense, bar supplies, cleaning services and various bingo expenses; also, the CD will mature this month and the bank note is to be paid. Sister Macha is keeping all accounts up-to-date and paid promptly.

Brother Benny Reck, our Building Committee Chairman, said two airconditioning units were acting up and needed repair. He had Mr. Marek put gravel in the potholes in the driveway. Also, he is checking into the prices of ventilator fans to draw the smoke out of the building.

This should make the people who use the hall more comfortable, so be

sure' to let Brother Reck know how much we appreciate all the work!

Financial Secretary Bill Goerig said all accounts were up-to-date and looking fine.

There will be a special meeting Wednesday, October 5 at 7:30 p.m. with all officers, trustees, Bingo Committee members, and bar help asked to be present. All books will be audited at that time.

A vote was taken to pay the person who will serve in the secretarial capacity when Secretary Linda Rubesh must be absent. Also chairs and tables are not available for use outside our hall, due to the high cost to replace damaged equipment.

Our next monthly meeting will be held October 19th. All the last minute plans for the 23rd will be discussed so please attend.

Remember, the District VI meeting will be Sunday, October 23rd here in Hillje at 1:30 p.m. We welcome refreshments from all El Campo-Hillje and Ganado lodge members. Brother Frankie Vanek and Brother Al Kutac have volunteered to cook the sausage that day.

Also, mark Wednesday, November 16 for a monthly meeting.

We will have the election of officers.

The annual Christmas Party will be December 13 at 3 p.m. with a catered meal to be served.

Lodge No. 51 Picnic Report

Dear members: Let me just say: (I told you so).

Yes, it's true, you don't know what you missed, if you missed the lodge picnic we held Sunday, September 18th.

There were approximately 140 members and their families participating in the delicious chicken and beef barbecue dinner, with all of the trimmings. Sister Erna Girndt, wife of Milton Girndt, and a 40 year mem ber of Lodge 51, said the table grace.

The tasty meal served by Curtis Guentert's processing plant of Schulenburg wasn't the only enjoyable feature of the day. The important feature was the visitation of members who get together only once every two years or longer. You met your fellow members whom you haven't seen for several years.

Believe-it-or-Not, I have served as your •secretary-treasurer for 44 years already, and sorry to say, I did not recognize some of our own members.

Following the meal, President Ludwig F. Kocian called the meeting to order, and Secretary D. A. Juren read the minutes of the previous meeting, which were approved as read. Your secretary then continued to give a report on the lodge's financial and membership status, and con tinned to speak on the lodge activities, comparing the interest taken by members forty years ago and, today. Comparing the attendances at meetings then and now, stressing the importance and need of the member's participation in all lodge meetings and other activities.

I am the one who mentioned, during the report I gave, that we need as many of you to remain after

the meeting and help in the "cleanup" process. Those of you who re mained and worked to clean-up were many. I personally and, on behalf of the lodge, would like to express thanks for your willingness and your work. It just goes to show that if we want to, we can work together and do great things. There were so many workers after the meeting broke up, that by the time I had all of my records, books, etc. folded up, the cleaning process was almost done.

And now let me remind you that we will have our next quarterly meeting the second Wednesday in December, which will be the 14th, and that will be the "ANNUAL" meeting. Check it off on your calendar and maybe you can come, who knows?

News

The third quarterly meeting was called to order by President Rudy Sefcik at 3 p.m. September 11. All members present stood and recited the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag and remained standing for a few moments of silence in memory of all departed brothers and sisters and for Bro. Joe F. Tobola, Jr. who passed away August 21, 1983. May they all rest in peace.

Secretary Anne Emery held roll call of the officers. Two officers were not present at this meeting.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read by Sec. Emery and were approved as read. Correspondence was also read.

Lodge Treasurer and Financial Secretary Maxine Sefcik gave the financial reports. All reports were approved. A new member, Valerie C. Massirer has joined our lodge. JT policies were converted on Tammy M. Gerik and Mark A. Hutyra. Nona and Marvin Gerik have transferred to our lodge from Lodge 66.

Get well wishes were expressed to Sister Ella Mae Chupik.

President Sefcik reported on numerous improvements and repairs that have been made in the hall. A discussion was held regarding a few more items that are to be repaired.

Lodge members certainly appreciate the help that Bro. John Sulak, Bro. Edwin Sulak and Bro. Robert Sulak have given working the bar at various functions held in the hall. Many thanks also to Sister Cepak, Sister Vaculik and Sister Sefcik for the clean-up work done in the hall.

The hall has been booked continuously through this year with 18 bookings for 1984 and 1 for 1985 as of this date.

Pres. Sefcik urged all members to take note of the survey order form in the Vestnik for the SPJST History Book. These forms should be completed and mailed in as soon as possible.

Pres. Sefcik reminded everyone of the next district meeting to be held at Lodge 35, Elk October 30 and Czech Day at the State Fair which will be held Sunday, October 16.

Our next meeting will be held December 4 at 3 p.m. This will be a very important meeting as election of officers and election of delegates

for the coming year will be held.

This is one of our favorite meetings and it will also be our Christmas Party which is always enjoyed by all.

We will have a delicious meal and also a visit from Santa Claus. Let us all remember to mark our calendar for Dec. 4 and make plans to attend.

The name for the Door Prize winner was drawn by Karen Mynar.

October Meeting For Lodge 183 No

Dear Members: Just a reminder that there will be NO monthly dance, October 8 due to the low turnout at the last dance and the construction problems at the new hall location.

The Building Committee is sorry that it could not be completed sooner, however, it will be great when lodge activities can take place at the new hall.

Due to so many members who would like to help Lodge 92 celebrate their 45th anniversary Sunday, October 9, it has been decided to CANCEL the regular monthly lodge meeting for October and give everyone a chance who wants to go to attend the activities at Lodge 92 in Fort Worth. There will be a Battle Dance after a short meeting, so all of you polka dancers can go and have a good time. It is wonderful when fraternalism can last 45 years and still go strong as it is at Lodge 92.

I heard that Lambert Pustejovsky is now home from the hospital after surgery and is doing fine. The lodge sends him their best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Oct. 20th Meeting At Lodge 185 Our September monthly meeting was held in beautiful Landa Park.

Everyone had an enjoyable time even though it was interrupted by heavy rain; the rain was badly needed so nobody complained about it.

In our August meeting a resolution was passed whereby our lodge donates $20.00 in memory of a deceased member to the SPJST Scholarship Fund. We believe this is a very worthy cause and more lasting than flowers.

Our lodge was pleasantly surprised when we were informed

by Supreme Lodge Vice President Bernie Gebala that one of our young members, Douglas Jasek, was awarded a $500 scholarship. Doug is a sophomore attending Texas A&M University; he was present at the last meeting and was thereby presented the $500 in person. He thanked everybody and we wish him well in the future.

Our next regular monthly meeting will be October 20th at Eagles Hall; the meeting will start one hour early at 7 p.m. because after the meeting, the youth members and adult members will have a Halloween Party. Everyone try to attend because this should be a fun-evening.

The Seaton Choral Club practiced for their Czech Day performance at the Dallas Fair by singing of the "Black Gypsy" and "Black Crow", the "Little Fish", the "Olive Tree", the "Brook in the Meadow", and about the "Lovers Meeting in the Forest."

Those singing were: Mary Holick, Della Psencik, Albina Mikeska, Agnes Schiller, Dorothy Morris, Martha Klusacek, Jerry Urubek, Anne Krcha, Otto Hanus, Dorothy and Jerry Pechal, Mathu and Elsie Cabla, Frank and Eleonora Spanhel, Lillian and Frank Mikulec, Emily Dohnalik, Thelma Bartosh, Leon and Vallie Zavodny, Helen and Henry Janacek, our accompanist, and Annie Jakubec, our song leader.

President Dorothy Morris presided over the business meeting which followed. The minutes were accepted as presented.

Martha Klusacek stated that October 4 is the deadline for Choral Club members to reserve seats on the bus going to Dallas. The money for the tickets will be due October 11th.

The meeting then adjourned for fellowship.

I would like to start off by saying a big thank you to Mr. Morris and his staff in behalf of all 191 Lodge members for a superb writeup of our Charter ceremonies July 24, 1983, and for bailing me out of an embarrassing situation with a bunch of badly focused pictures. Again, I thank you.

We held our SPJST August 9th meeting at the Chambers Park Community Center. I hate to say this but our attendance was not too good. I would like to urge everyone of Lodge 191 members to attend our meetings so everyone can get involved in decisions and suggestions on future Lodge Projects. "HELP!" Our SPJST dance was held at the Noble Club. We had a good crowd and danced to taped music of all varieties. Many thanks goes to the PINE SQUARE square dancers who gave us a real nice square dance show. The ladies wore real pretty dresses. Square dancers are: Bob and Betty Horton, Jim and Kay Sikes, John and Helen Anderson and Shorty and Carolyn Denman. We thank Ken and Betty Thornton and Jerry and Gloria Sizemore for all arrangements for the dance.

We also held our SPJST youth meeting at the Community Park Center September 13th. Ken Carter had some projects going and our youth officers were elected. Sheri Carter was elected president, Jessica Bowers vice-president, Tom Phillips treasurer and Kelly Bowers secretary. Other projects were

Well, us kids had our swimming party at Old Orchard Swimming Pool in Diboll, Texas. It was fun and the water was just right.

The weekend of September 10th, one of our players, Randy Christian, became a married ballplayer; he and Tina Oliver were married and spent their honeymoon in sunny Florida, our best wishes from the team and all!

News Of Lodge No. 88

The Big Band USA of Al Pierson with their Ballroom music entertained a fair house, and this being a dress-code dance, the Ballroom, with all the ladies in beautiful gowns, was a nice sight to see. In charge of the dance was Mary Schenburn wearing a light blue chiffon gown. Chuck Custard was in the ticket office and his wife, Jane, dressed in a white gown helped Mary to seat the guests. At the door Pappy Spaulding with his dear wife, Marie, dressed in aqua chiffon greeted the guests as they arrived. Most of the guests had reservations in advance. In the lobby, as usual before a big dance, reservations were taken by Irene Slovacek and Erna O'Conner looking beautiful seated at the beautiful antique table; this table was donated to the lodge by Mrs. Thelma Maresh for the opening of our lodge in 1965.

They were taking reservations for the Jan Garber dance Saturday, October 8, 1983.

At table six, in midst of friends, was a newly-wed couple. The bridegroom, Mr. Thomas Huffman, and his bride now, Mrs. Olga Huffman, to celebrate their wedding which took place this morning (September 24) at 8 a.m. in Crosby, Texas. The bride wore a beautiful white dress. Congratulations for a happy future.

A wedding anniversary of 34 years was also observed by two of our loyal members, Harley and Viola Cox. Viola also wore a becoming white gown. Harley is our past entertainment chairman and Viola past secretary of our lodge. Wishing you many, many more!

Two full tables of friends surrounded Karl Hassenbrock to cheer him up for his 39th? birthday which will take place Monday, September 26. Karl and his wife, Arnele, hosted their friends with a delicious breakfast after the dance, which they all enjoyed, I am sure.

Thanks for the invite; I took a rain check. Karl promised to bring me one of his specialties. HOMEBAKED BREAD; at this, he is a first-class expert; I am waiting.

On the left side of the stage there are always three or four tables surrounded with the same couples, but at this dance, I missed them, namely, Harry and Millie Wheeler, Lee and Elelois Flores, Edgar and Edna Ruppert, Noble and Katy Keating, Allen and Bernice Coppock and Don and Audrey Jeter. You have missed a very nice evening; will be looking for you next time.

At the social night Thursday we missed the Wagners for the third week and it worried Lena Vasek, Alma Crosswel and, of course, me; we all sit together and the question is always there if one or the other does not show up. Mary Schenburn finally had news that Mary Ann is in Twelve Oaks Hospital for the third week and is in Room 550B. I called her Monday and Mary Ann said she will have to stay one week longer.

We miss you.

A group of 79 people including four of our Lodge 88 members, Louis and Doris Darilek and Bill and Vera McCaskell joined the Astro Booster Club for the trip to Montreal July 21, 1983 and had a chance to attend the four baseball games in the beautiful Olympic Stadium. The

grosp took a tour of Montreal, visited the beautiful Notre Dame Church, the Mount Royal, the old town of Montreal and the new underground shopping center, and to top it off at Hyatt Regency Hotel enjoyed a delicious brunch, plus a dinner at the Regency Dinner Theater. All present on this trip were very much pleased with the visit and hospitality shown them by the people in Montreal. They are at home now, tired, but pleased and happy.

With sorrow in our hearts we part with our Sister Marie Koci, age 72.

She passed away, in her sleep Thursday, September 22, 1983 at her home. Marie was a happy person and always had something nice to say about others. She was not ill, just fell asleep. Her husband, Joseph Koci found her in the morning and could not wake her. Services were held Saturday, September 24, 1983 at 12 noon at the Woodlawn Chapel of Memories. Rev. Roland Chupick officiated; interment in Woodlawn Gardens of Memories. Surviving Marie Koci are her husband, Joseph Koci; one daughter, Annie (Koci) Schindler and husband Robert Schindler; one grandson, Joey, all of Houston. We express our sincere sympathy to the surviving family of our deceased Sister Annie Koci.

May she rest in peace.

Saturday, September 17, at the Vrazel dance, a happy group of people celebrated a special day for Connie Petitfils for her birthday at Table 45, given by the host Joe Gooden, son of our lovely Edna O'Conner. The table was surrounded

by Irene Slovacek, Edna O'Conner, Travis Rich of Austin, Tex. Joe Gooden with his lovely date Connie Petitfils, Bud Bearce, Peggy Murphy, Tam Ruzicka, Robert Dehne. It is interesting to know that Connie is a member of SPJST Lodge No. 80, Holland. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Joe Franek and her grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Joe Barabas, Jr. and it is noteworthy to know that Connie's grandfather, Joe Barabas, Jr., served twelve years as president for Lodge 80, Holland, and now proclaimed honorary president.

Most of these guests were at our lodge for the first time and we do hope not the last time. Sister O'Conner already extended her Czech Day invitation to these lovely people which will be held October 23, 1983. The highlights of the day is the parade of costumes; if you have one, be sure and wear same.

Enjoyed talking to Edgar and Edna Ruppert and Don and Audrey Jeter, and I was surprised to find them in the Blue Room instead of the Ballroom. A trio of friends were discussing their planned trip to Las Vegas next week for four days.

Ziegie AURBACKER has it all figured out, of course, Eugene Kalus and his wife, Silvia, are not so sure. I wish them good luck.

Touring part of Europe was enjoyed for a full two weeks by three couples from Lodge No. 88: Franklin and Almeda Bravenec, Kewin and Louise Jacob, and Enos and Bernice Wessels. They flew from New York with the TWA lines and landed in Frankfurt, Germany and, from there, to Heidelburg. Then marveled over the beautiful sights in Switzerland with cottages sitting in the mountains with colorful flowers in window boxes —

Lucerne, Geneva and a small town in the mountains called Zeramtt, there were no cars, you either walked or rode a bicycle, from Zeramtt on to St. Moritz, Innsbrook, in Austria was next, then Saltzburg where the famous Sound of Music was filmed, from there to Vienna where they toured 1440 rooms in the Sshoinbrun Palace and many other historic places, then to Munich through Rothenburg where they roamed through the all year round Christmas Store and where they saw the largest Nut Cracker in the world. Next day they went to Frankfurt and boarded the plane for New York and back home to Houston where it took them a week to get over their Jet-Lag. Just to let you know that our lodge history is in print now and will be out in the near future. The threemember committee, Tim Kostom, Naomi Spencer and I viewed the work last week and we are very pleased with Mr. Jones' work.

Sunday, October 8 will be our District Five Family Day at Lodge No. 88. As I reminded you before, dinner will be served free to all who will bring a side dish to go with the meat supplied by District V. Bring enough to serve your family of 2- 34- or five, etc. You will enjoy all the exhibits with other entertainment!

Texane 'V" Return From Lincoln

Ninety polka lovers from the North Texas area recently returned from a five-day, two-bus trip to the , Pla-Mor Czech Days festival in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Most members of the group were tired from the trip but had many pleasant memories of much brass music, much polka and waltz dancing, much singing, and many renewals and new friendships made.

Although many were "alumni" of the previous four Texane trips, for several persons this was the first trip to the conservative, breadbasket region of the USA. Texane is a Czech word meaning Texans and is pronounced TEX-AH-NEH. The Texane consisted of SPJST members from Dallas, Fort Worth, Seymour, Pilot Point, Burleson, Ennis, and Seaton; also included were persons who are members of the Sokol, KroUtek Cesk3'rch Zen, KJT, KJZT, WFLA, CSA, RVOS, and SVPS. Celebrities in the group were Queen Vickie Gerlich of the Dallas SPJST Lodge 84, "Bo" Janca of Fort Worth who served as Mascot for the trip, and accordion accompanists Norbert Blazek and Jimmie Ocenasek. Jimmie and Walter Brown had come to Dallas from Foreman, Arkansas to travel with the group.

8/VES'rN1K-Wednesday, October 5, 1983 have learned that Texas audiences are most appreciative of their music, and many Nebraska bands are looking forward to playing in Texas, soon.

Although the Grebnick, Kucera, and Hansen orchestras have played in Texas frequently over the years, the Math Sladky and Jim Bochnicek orchestras have started coming to Texas only recently.

The Capital City Choraliers of Lincoln, Nebraska will be performing at the Czech Day at the State Fair in Dallas, Sunday, October 16.

Also, many mid-westerners have moved to Texas as a part of the "Sun Belt" population shift. So now many others are coming to Texas frequently to visit relatives, attend college and professional football games, and attend our Czech festivals.

NE WSBRIEFS Henry P. Kucera, 86, passed away in a Dallas hospital on Sunday morning, September 25th. Funeral services were held from SparkmanHillcrest Funeral Home in Dallas Tuesday, September 27th. Bro. Kucera had been a member of the

SPJST since 1928 and was currently a member of SPJST Lodge No. 130 in Dallas. Bro. Kucera was a lative of Ellinger, south of La Grange, and was a retired longtime Dallas City Attorney. Bro. Kucera was a dedicated public servant and a competent and highly respected practitioner of municipal law. He helped guide the City of Dallas through one of its greatest growth and development periods. He was highly recognized by his peers as a very competent legal mind and city attorney. He was a friend of fraternal Societies in general and never forgot his humble beginnings in Ellinger. In a recent communication from the Temple ISD Business Office, we were requested that, if possible, to schedule this event a little earlier next year. The custodial staff was in somewhat of a bind this year because they had to work into the night to get everything cleaned and ready for an all-day in-service training program for the Temple ISD faculty the next morning.

Therefore, to accommodate our good friends at Temple High School, we are scheduling the 1984 State YAD one week earlier — namely, Sunday, August 12th. As I stated previously, we will most likely start the day's activities around 10:30 a.m., take an hour for lunch and resume early in the afternoon.

This might crowd us a little with the end of camps, but we will do the best we can. The earlier date might also be better for our youth who had to start to school the day after our YAD this year. We still plan to finish by 5 p.m. — NAM.

OCTOBER VESTNIK PROJECT Dear Youth Members: Our October Vestnik Project concerns a popular (certainly for young people) holiday — Hallowe'en. In doing this project, it is intended to be educational as well as entertaining.

I am assigning a value of 20 points to this project, provided all answers are correct; if not, points will be taken off. After the results are published, it will be up to the youth and leader concerned to record their points.

Morris President *** HALLOWE'EN Witches, Ghosts & Goblins The mystic rites and ceremonies with which Hallowe'en was originally observed had their origin among the Druids centuries before the dawn of the Christian era in their celebration on the eve of the festival of Samhain. (The Druids were an order of priests or ministers of religion among the ancient Celts of Gaul (France), Britain, and Ireland.) In the course of time there was added to them some of the rites peculiar to the Roman festival of Pomona who presided over the harvests. The early Christian church adopted the eve and the day following and gave new names to them, as it did with many other nonChristian observances. Many of the ancient rites were brought to this country from Europe but they no longer have any mystic significance save among the credulous, and are observed only in a sportive spirit by young people who wish to spend a frolicsome evening. The name is of Christian origin and refers to the eve of All Hallows or All Saints' Day, which falls on November 1.

In the eighth century Pope Gregory III moved the church festival of All Hallows, or All Saints' Day, to November 1; in the following century Pope Gregory IV decreed that the day was to be a universal church observance. It was in honor of all the saints who had died with or without official church recognition of their sanctity. The eve of All Saints' Day — All Hallows E'en — became known during the Middle Ages as the time favored by witches and sorcerers.

Since Hallowe'en is not a particularly English or Protestant holiday, it was not widely observed during the first two hundred years of American settlement. There were small Irish Catholic settlements in which it was celebrated, but the great impetus was provided by the terrible potato famine in Ireland in the 1840s which sent thousands of Irishmen across the Atlantic.

Hallowe'en is completely separated now from any relation it might once have had with All Saints' Day. The children of America have taken over the holiday, making it a fun-filled occasion to dress in outlandish costumes, carve jacko'lanterns, go "trick-or-treating" for sweets and fruits, and listen to ghost stories. Many of these customs, however, do have their origins in various ancient Hallowe'en-New Year festivals; some come to us from more recent times.

The modern custom of going from door to door begging candy, nuts, apples, and pennies while masked and dressed in a grotesque or outlandish costume goes back ultimately to the pagan New Year feast. The ghosts that were thought to throng about the houses of the living were greeted with a banquetladen table. At the end of the feast, masked and costumed villagers representing the souls of the dead paraded to the outskirts of town

leading the ghosts away.

With the advent of Christianity, various explanations were forthcoming to give a more Christian rationale for the practice. The masking precedents have thus been found in the costumed parades of children who went around on the eve of All Souls' Day (the day following All Saints' Day) offering to fast for the departed souls in return for money or an offering.

Another explanation is that the costuming stems from the medieval practice of displaying the relics of saints on All Hallows. The poorer churches could not afford relics and so instituted a procession with the parishioners dressed as the patron saints; the extras dressed as angels or devils and everyone paraded around the churchyard.

As for the "trick" part of the trickor-treat custom, it stems from the many years in this country when the night before Hallowe'en was known as "Mischief Night". In some places the antics of this night were carried out on Hallowe'en. Gates were unhinged and hidden, ropes stretched across roads in the dark, outhouses toppled, doorbells rung, bags of powder spilled on porches, and in general whatever mischief could be thought of was done.

The basis for Mischief Night is the old belief in ghosts and fairies who roamed the roads on Hallowe'en night curdling milk and riding people's horses to exhaustion. Any practical joke could thus be blamed on these little creatures over whom no one had any control.

In a custom that antedates our hollowed-out pumpkin lanterns, Irish children carved out the centers of large rutabagas, turnips, and potatoes. Faces were picked out on the surface and candles set inside.

These grinning and leering jack-o'lanterns served to light Hallowe'en gatherings.

There is an old tale connected with the name "jack-o'-lanterns." It concerns a stingy drunkard of an Irishman, Jack by name, who tricked the Devil into climbing an apple tree to get one of the juicy pieces of fruit, then quickly cut the sign of the cross into the trunk of the tree preventing the Devil from coming down. Jack made the Devil swear that he wouldn't ever come after Jack's soul again or claim it in any way. This did not stop Jack from dying, however, and when he went to the gates of heaven he was turned away because all his life he had been so tight-fisted and mean and excessively thirsty.

There was only one place to go, so Jack went down to the Devil's abode. But even in hell he was not accepted, for the Devil had promised never to take him. "But where can I go?" asked Jack. "Back where you came from," replied the Devil. The way back was windy and dark and as a final gesture the Devil threw a live coal to Jack straight from the fire of hell. Jack had been eating a turnip and he put the coal inside it. Ever since then he has been traveling over the face of the earth with his "jack-o'-lantern", searching for a place of rest. That, so the tale says, is the origin of those globe-faced emblems of Hallowe'en that decorate the porches and windows and fenceposts of America.

of Massachusetts, Connecticut and Virginia. Through the influence of Cotton Mather there were many executions of so-called witches in Salem, Mass., toward the end of that century. The panic was so great about this time that, according to a tradition, a woman who had made an apple dumpling was charged with witchcraft. Her accusers insisted that she could not have got the apple inside the dumpling without the exercise of unholy magic. She proved her innocence by making a dumpling in court and was acquitted. The last trial for witchcraft in England was in 1712, but the accused was not executed.

Belief in witchcraft was once common in America. The witches were charged with making waxen images of their victims and causing their illness by sticking pins in the image or making them waste away by melting the images before the fire. This is an old superstition entertained by the savages of Africa, by the American Indians, as well as by other peoples of widely varying civilizations and localities.

It was believed that iron was a protection against the power of the witches and that it was especially potent if in the shape of a horseshoe.

And those who believe in the power of the sign of the cross believed that if it were made in the presence of a witch she would become impotent.

The belief in witches survives in the most surprising regions.

German farmers in eastern Pennsylvania paint magic signs on their barns to warn the witches away, although in recent years some of them have insisted that the signs were merely ornamental. But there have been murders in that region by men who insisted that they had been bewitched and that they could be freed from the enchantment only by the death of the person responsible.

There are numerous cat superstitions connected with the time. If a cat sits quietly beside a person, that means peace and prosperity. If the cat rubs herself against one, that means good luck and greater good luck if the cat jumps into one's lap. If the cat yawns that means an opportunity awaits which must not be neglected.

And if a cat runs from one that means that the person has a secret which will be disclosed within a week.

A Pennsylvania belief is that if one goes out of the front door backward, picks up grass or dust and wraps it in paper and puts it under the pillow one will dream with certainty of what the future holds.

In Maryland the girls put an egg on the stove to fry and open wide the doors and windows. Then the man they are to marry will come in and turn the egg. At supper the girls stand behind the chairs confident that their future husband will come and sit in front of them.

When families from the Old World came to America they brought their Hallowe'en customs with them.

Many of the customs have survived, with variations, but belief in the virtue of the rites has become tenuous and the Hallowe'en parties common in all parts of the country are gatherings of young people for a frolic, even as they were in part in Scotland at the time when Burns wrote his poem describing one of them.

••■■••••••■ COTTONWOOD YC PLANS TRIP TO SIX FLAGS Dear Readers, Our monthly meeting was held September 21st. The meeting was called to order by the President Terry Hykel.

The roll call was read, the minutes were also read and approved. The treasurer's report was also given.

Correspondence included thank you notes from: Mary Krizan, Lisa Uptmore, Jann, Mike, Phillip, and Kathy Brem, Tammie Dobecka, Annie Uptmor family, Henrietta Mach, Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Mynar and Rose Uptmor.

We were to bring four cakes to the West Rest Home, October 5th.

From our lodge Darrell Uptmor won first place and Shirley Dobecka received 3rd place in Constructed Items. Kevin Dobecka placed second in Hobby Kits and Keith Hykel won 3rd place in Handicraft; Terry Hykel was the recipient of the $1,000 Scholarship, and Darrell Uptmor was named 'Teenager of the Year', while Kevin Dobecka was named `Junior of the Year' at State YAD. Willie Mae Schuetz thanked everyone for working and dancing at the Westfest. She also thanked Robert, Lydia and Shirley Dobecka for donating the truck for the Parade.

Ten dollars were donated to the Telethon from the Lodge 6 Youth Club. Cup towels were also donated to the kitchen.

We will go to Six Flags October 16 and there will also be a Bake Sale October 28th at Leroy Bank.

Terry Hykel will bring the cake to the next meeting.

Their attendants were Mrs. Adele Bartosh Simecek, Mrs. Octavia Prasatik Baca, Mrs. Alice Chovanec Tlucek, Louis Psencik, Harry Wychopen and Roma Bartosh.

William Bartosh, Sr. and Charles Janak were witnesses. Mrs. Elsie Janak was the organist.

A wedding breakfast, reception and dinner was held in the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Wychopen in Hilije.

The couple drove to Carlsbad Caverns for their honeymoon, without a spare tire, in an old Model "A" Ford.

Their car was stalled on their return trip to Hillje during a severe thunderstorm within seeing distance of the church in which they were married and. Alice was baptized in as an infant.

Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Wychopen celebrated their "50th" anniversary in 1959. Mr. and Mrs. Prasatik used the same decoration on their "50th"

anniversary cake. Raymond wore his father's golden wedding ring and Alice wore the same gold "Faith, Hope and Chrity" charm around her neck as she did on her wedding day.

The gold chain was a gift from her husband.

The children of Raymond and Alice Prasatik and the honorees want to thank sincerely all the guests who were able to attend and for the hundreds of congratulatory messages they received on this, the most memorable occasion.

(Both are members of SPJST Lodge 155 at Austin and Raymond is the first existing financial secretary and recording secretary for 48 years when Lodge 155 was organized in 1935; he is among the charter members who helped organize the lodge. In addition to his loyal fraternal services, Brother Prasatik has also served as delegate to several SPJST conventions. On behalf of the Society, best wishes to both of them — Editor.)

Honored On Golden Anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Paul Prasatik of 3000 Enfield Road in Austin were honored by their children on their 50th wedding anniversary Sunday, August 21, 1983 with a lovely reception, dance and dinner from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at St. Louis Activity Center, 7601 Burnet Road.

Marriage vows were renewed with Monsignor Edward Matocha officiating.

A surprise was the presentation of a special Apostolic Blessing imparted by His Holiness John Paul II on the occasion of the couple's "50th" wedding anniversary. The presentation by their eldest daughter Virginia Rae in its entirety reads, "In loving tribute, appreciation and dedication for rearing your family in the Catholic Czech traditions . . . we, your children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren honor you, Raymond and Alice Prasatik, on the occasion of your 50th wedding anniversary celebration, with this papal blessing from Rome ... Congratulations!"

The jubilant couple exchanged heartfelt warmest sentiments with their many lifelong friends and relatives present.

All of the six children, their spouses and thirteen grandchildren attended the special event. Another granddaughter, Cynthia Stockton of Houston was unable to attend; the birth of her second daughter, Alicia, was just announced making this two

great-grandchildren the Prasatiks are proud of.

The Prasatik's children are Virginia Dornoff of Houston, Mary Anne Brown of Carrollton, Sylvia Ethridge of Fort Collins, Colorado, Margrette Billingsley of Arlington, Robert Prasatik of Austin, and Sherilynn Cole of Lafayette, Ind. A grand march, led by Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Vrabel, was danced and witnessed by many for the first time.

A video tape was shown taken at the First Texas Czech Symposium in Temple of the Texas University Czech singers singing the traditional old Czech wedding song and was acted out by Sherilynn Prasatik, then, as the bride. This was a surprise first time viewing of the film by her.

On a special table photographs of their wedding performed by Rev. Edward Jansky in Hilije and the framed wedding "memorial" certificate was displayed. Also included was a ceramic rectangular covered dish top which held a preserved, arrangement of candied flowers from their 25th wedding anniversary cake. There were also special messages from President Ronald and Nancy Reagan, Senator Lloyd Doggett, and a personal call from U.S. Congressman Mr. Jake Pickle.

Betty Pavlas, Philip Orler Are Married Betty Jean Pavlas became the bride of Philip N. Orler in a noon ceremony Saturday, August 6 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in West.

The Rev. B. J. Zientek officiated at the double-ring ceremony.

Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. Alvin F. Pavlas of West and Mrs. Irene Orler of Corsicana.

Susan Mynarcik served as maid of honor. Bridesmaids were Annette Ashley, Sissy Mynarcik, Cathy Svacina, Missy Kaska, Sharon Russell, Antoinette Moore, Nelly Mynarcik, Sherri Hugo, Dainnia Baker, Alisa Jares and Cindy Dodge.

The bride chose rainbow colors for the bridal party. Each bridesmaid had a parasol and wreath to match the color of her dress.

Groomsmen wore white tuxedos.

Junior bridesmaids were Tammy Ashley and Theresa Mynar. Tara Harrison was flower girl.

Best man was Ricky Baker.

Groomsmen were Eldon Ashley, Louis Mynarcik, Jr., Bernie Svacina, Danny Pavlas, Buster Russell, Steven Adams, Michael Mynarcik, Albert Kaska, Mark Byruns, Richard Kaska, and Larry Dodge.

Robert Rieger and Chris Ashley were junior groomsmen. Ringbearer was Keith Ashley.

Witnesses were Laddie Kaska and Henry Urban, Jr. Readings in church were by Mike Mynarcik and Sissy Mynarcik.

Usher duties were performed by Bobby Kaska, Eugene Dudik and Harry Dudik.

The House Party included Marcia Kaska, Terri Hugo, Debbie Atkins and Debbie Laubert.

The bride carried a rosary in her bouquet that her late grandfather, Joe Kaska, gave to his bride, the late Mary Kaska, on their wedding day,

Wednesday, October 5, 1983-VESTNfK/11 about 60 years ago. The rosary was then given to the Kaska's daughter, Mary Pavlas, mother of the bride, on the day of her wedding, and Mrs. Pavlas in turn, gave it to her daughter.

As a special sentiment, the bride carried a ring that her maid of honor, Susan Mynarcik, had exchanged with her in the fourth grade. The two had pledged to give the ring back on each other's wedding day.

Theresa Nors was organist and soloists were Sunny Rogers and Theresa Nors.

Following the ceremony, a reception and dance honored the couple at the SPJST Hall in West. It was hosted by the bride's parents.

The bride, a 1982 graduate of West High School, is a former "Miss Westfest." The groom is employed

by Thomas Enterprise in Silver City.

After a honeymoon to San Antonio, the couple is making their home in Corsicana.

V nedeli 25. zati jsem s bratry jela se podfvat do sine KJT kde Cesky klub potadal vYroenf oslavu "Klobasovy Festival". Poeasi bylo velice pane a nav§teva Napted byla M§e, kterou sloutiil Rev. Botfk a pevecky sbor moc pekne zazpfval nekolik pisnf pod vedenim p.

Bob Li§lcy. Pak byl podavan velmi dobry °bed a to tada byla hodne dlouho stale pina. Pozdeji byl prihrod krojd venku a tee harmonikovy kontest na poeest zesnuleho p. Jerry Petra. Bylo to v§e moc pekne a v sini vyhralvala hudba Czech Mates a Czech Harvesters a hezky se to poslouchalo.

Se§li jsme se po del§1 dobe zas s p •ateli a poznali nove. Byli tam dye dvojice — jedna se jmenovala' Zubfkova a druha Pustkova, a pekne jsme se pohovotili vespolek. Myslim, tie oboji byli z Bryan, Tx., a pak je§te jedna byla z Caldwell, Tx. Take jsme se seznamili s dvema mladiky kteti pry jsou to u nas jen par dni. Letos, v druhe polovine srpna, bylo tomu 130 let, kdy se narodil patriarcha narodniho obrozeni a nejvetgi &sky* osvicenecky vedee Josef Dobrovsky. (Osvicenstvi-filosoficky smer v druhe polovine 18 stoleti).

Tento genialni zakladatel slavistiky, tvriree vedecke 'Ceske mluvnice, eeskeho slovniku a eeske literarni historie se narodil 17 srpna 1753 v D'armotech u Raabu v Mad'arsku, kde jeho otec Jakub byl vojenskym strdimistrem. AC rodne jmeno znelo Doubra ysky, po kttu bylo dftèti — budoucimu Odci svetoveho jmena — napsano do matriky zkomolene jmeno Josef Dobrovsky; rodina proti tomuto omylu neprotestovala a nadanS student Josef, pozdeji vynikajici ueenee, Si sve nove ptijmeni tak oblibil, ie se k privodnimu rodinnemu jmenu nevratil. Brzy po jeho narozenf se

rodina odstehovala do Horgova TYna v janich Oechach, jelika jeho otec byl dan do vystaby. Pak misto vysveceni na kneze prisobil jako soukromy ueitel v hrabeci rodine Nostitzri. AC pouze nekolik rokri starg 20 let, Dobrovskyji tehdy na sebe upozornil vybornou znalosti orientalnich jazykri, pkedev gim v biblicke textove kritice. Usilim Vaclava Fortunata Durycha, profesora praske teologicke fakulty a Dobrovskeho ptatel se mlady vedec brzy zametil te2 na studia starosloven gtiny. V roce 1779 zaeal pak vydavat Casopis Ceska literatura, jeho nazev byl v ptigtim roce zmenen na Cesky a moraysky literarni magazfn. V tomto Casopisu Dobrovsky rozvfjf svrij zajem o slovanskou historii, slovanske jazyky, a ptedevgim o Ceskou tee. Z rdznych jeho pracovnich studii eeskeho jazyka jsou smerodatna, tato dila: Zaklady a vvin slovanskych jazykri, zejmena eegtiny z roku 1791, Dejiny eeske keel a literatury z roku 1792 a nove vydani stejneho dila v roce 1818, Slovo Slavenicum z roku 1792, eeska encyklopedie z roku 1799, Sbirka eeskych ptislovi z roku 1804 a Dejepisny soupis ueebnich metod eeske teei z roku 1809.
