Brenda is the daughter of Johnny and Betty Marek of Temple; Johnny works at First Federal Savings & Loan, and Betty works at Book Of Life Book Store. Brenda graduated from Temple High School and is attending Baylor University as an Accounting major. She has a brother, Gary, who is a Junior in Temple High, and her grandparents are Emil and Frances Hejl of Rt. 4, Temple.

Janine Veselka

Member Wins ''Miss Williamson County". Crown Janine Veselka was crowned Miss Williamson County July 2, 1983; she is the daugher of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Veselka of Taylor.

Janine is a senior at Taylor High School this year and is involved in several school activities such as Drama, Latin Club, Student Council, The Silks (Flag Corps), and National Honor Society.

She has been named in Who's Who among American High School Students for the 1982-83school year.

Janine is also involved in the National Federation of Catholic Youth Ministry (CYO). In the local club and for the Diocese of Austin, she is vice-president and on the Deanery level she holds the office of president.

Janine is a member of Lodge 187 of Round Rock, where she has held the offices of secretary and president and has been involved with various activities throughout her years in the youth program. This past spring she was Princess of Lodge No. 187's annual May Fete.

Being an active seventeen-year­ old, Janine enjoys the outdoors, cooking, sewing and meeting people.

Her future plans, after graduation from High School, are to attend McLennan Community College for two years and then transfer to Baylor University or The University of Texas where she will major in Marketing and Purchasing.

· Scene of the XXIVth SPJST Convention

From tne " President's Office Preliminary XXIVth Convention News The XXIVth Convention of the SPJST will convene Monday morning, June 18th, 1984 in the Banquet Hall of the Bayfront Plaza Convention Center in Corpus Christi, Texas.

We can disclose some convention information, which is more or less tentative. A more definite schedule of events should be forthcoming in about a month. Some of you have already inquired about the sequence of convention events and that is understandable, inasmuch as many of you want to make plans as far in advanceas possible.

Registration of delegates will start in the lobby of the Convention Center at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 17th.

There are over 1,000 free parking spaces at, near, or around the Convention Center on Shoreline Drive, including 192 spaces in the basement of the Center. These 192 spaces rent for 50¢per entry. All of these should more than adequately accommodateour delegates.

The two principal hotels for. delegates are the Holiday Inn at 1102South Shoreline Blvd. and the La Quinta Royale Motor Inn, 601 North Water Street. Both streets feed into the Convention Complex, although Water Street is over one blockfrom Shoreline. Shorelineruns along the bay. The Holiday Inn is about two miles from the Conven­ tion Center and the La Quinta Royale is about one-half mile; both óffer very nice accommodations.A block of 275 rooms at the Holiday Inn and a block of 175 at the La Quinta Royale have been reserved and confirmedfor our delegates. Six months before the Convention, the Corpus Christi Convention Tourist Bureau will contact both hotels and secure prices for June. They will then send us a form with that infor­ mation and the necessary reserva-

tion cards will be sent out from the Supreme Lodge.

We know that probably the biggest complaint is going to be getting from the hotels to the Convention Center, but with the ease of parking and the streets leading directly between the two, this should really not pose a problem. In addition, shuttle buses will be provided at no charge to our delegates and these will shuttle back and forth between the Conven­ tion Center and the two hotels.

The convention sessions them­ selves will be held in the Banquet Hall which is the second largest single area in the Center. Arrange­ ments have been made for plenty of microphones to be placed strategically throughout the Hall.

Delegates will sit on one side of the tables facing the chairman and presiding officers. There should be no crowding because ample space is availableand we willuse it.

In that same area a banquet will be held, sponsored by the Supreme Lodge. Shortly after the last conven­ tion, it was decided that there will be no Miss SPJST Competition at this convention and no Youth Spec­ tacular. Instead, the reigning State King and Queen, State Scholarship Winner, and leading Sales Repre­ sen ta ti ve will be invited and introduced at the banquet. An orchestra is being hired to play for a dance followingthe banquet. · Committee rooms have been assigned for the various committees and these will be prominently displayed. District caucus rooms have also been designated and these willbe prominently identified.

There is a possibility that there will be a caterer to provide either hot meals or snacks at the Conven­ tion Center for those delegates who do not wish to leave the Convention Center to go eat, but it is generally felt that the big majority of dele­ gates will most likely want to "shop around" and pick their ownplaces to eat. A list of eating places will be made available in plenty of time before the convention. Because of the distances involved,lunch breaks will probably be two hours long.

This will be announced by the conventionchairman.

Representatives from Lodge 79 have met with President Morris and Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska on at least two occasions. We have also met with Mr. John Meyer, Conven­ tion Center Building Manager, and he has been most helpful. There are always a number of things involving footwork and checking out things that have to be done locally.

The possibility of having a picture of the convention delegates is being looked into and if . these plans materialize the picture will be taken prior to convening the convention first thing Mondaymorning.

No one can predict when the convention will actually be finished; that depends on a number of factors, some of them beyond the control of the people in charge. It is hoped, however, that the delegates will be mindful of the cost involved and endeavor to work toward a Wednesday afternoon or late afternoon adjournment.

Our delegates know that we are fine­ tuning and streamlining the procedures of our conventions and getting through a little earlier each time, so it just could happen in Corpus Christi in 1984. A sister fraternal in the Midwest recently completed their convention in just a little over a day and a half.They had approximately 360 delegates. With everyone's cooperation, the SPJST ought to be able to accomplish something similar in Corpus Christi.

The election of delegates at local lodges will take place in November and December of this year, or in the nearest succeeding meeting. The question that inevitably comes up before each conventionconcerns one of the eligibility requirements of -delegates. Under Art. 4 of our bylaws, only that member may be elected a delegate or substitute delegate who has attended a majority of the· regular meetings during each of the three years preceding the election of delegates to the convention.Noticethat it says "preceding the election... " which means that you don't count the meeting in which the election is held. If your lodge has held monthly meetings and you hold your annual meeting in November, then you count the lodge meetings only

through October, which means that the member must have attended a majority of the ten meetings, which would have to be six. If your lodge holds the election of delegates in December, then the delegate must have attended a majority of the meetings through November, which wouldalso have to be six. A majority · is one more than half. It depends which month you hold your election of delegates. For those lodges that hold their annual meeting in January, the delegate must have attended a majority of the meetings through 1983,whichwouldbe a total of twenty-one meetings - seven meetings for the three years 1981, 1982, 1983. If your lodge holds regular monthly meetings but didn't have a meeting during one or two of the months, for whatever reason, during the three years mentioned above, you obviously cannot count that meeting in·. determining eligibility because you can't count a meeting that wasn't held. Also, if your lodge holds quarterly meetings (foura year), the member must have attended three each year to be eligible for the position of delegate.

Personally, I don't see how a delegate from a lodge that holds only one or two meetings a year can qualify as a delegate to the conven­ tion, but that will be decided by the entire convention body on a case-by­ case basis under Art. 2(a) of our by­ laws.

Ironically, how many lodge meetings a member attends after the election of delegates and before the convening of_the convention has nothing to do with delegate eligibility, just as attendance at lodge meetings the six months followingthe convention. This time around, unless the by-law is changed, you won't be counting attendance at lodge meetings for the next convention until January 1985.

These might be termed "dead periods".

These last few months of the year willbe the time that locallodges will be electing delegates and this period also brings numerous ínquiríes. I believe that at least part of these inquiries stem from the fact that some of our members do not become too concerned with the by-lawsuntil

the election of delegates rolls around and then they discover that the by-laws prescribe a little more than they can meet. Then, some of the members try to start "adjusting" or reading into the by­ laws something that is not there so that they might be eligible to be elected as a delegate. They are especially unhappy when they become very close to qualifying. It therefore behooves all members to re-read and become familiar, generally speaking, with Articles 4 through 12.

Members are reminded of Article 20 of our by-laws, which sets forth the procedure for the By-Law Com­ mittee to meet and consider proposed amendments to the by­ laws. That committee is to convene no later than January 1984 for the purpose of deliberating and deciding on recommendations for amending the by-laws. They may meet earlier if they choose. They may also present their own recommenda­ tions, so if you haven't been giving it any thought you need to do so in the. coming few months. You may think that June 1984 is a long way off, but it will be here before you know it. I have been re-reading some of my comments and recommendations to the By-Law Committee that appeared in the February 6, 1980 issue of the Vestnik. As I re-read these almost four years later, I still see some merit in the recommenda­ tions.

I firmly believe in what I stated at that time and that is that it is well and good the delegates seek the input and opinions of their lodge members, however, it is really not fair to commit the delegates to any particular position because there will be facts and reports presented in the convention that will cast an áltogether different light on a matter from what the members perceive in the local lodge. It is the responsibility of a delegate to listen and make up their mind based on information and facts presented to them and be free to exercise their own free will and judgment.

It is anticipated that some lodges may have a little difficulty having enough members eligible and qualified to be delegates under the present by-laws, as was the case in a few instances before the last convention. I am still not completely persuaded that our present criteria for delegate eligibility are the best.

There have been, anď still are, various schools of thought on this.

At any rate, since you can't elect members who are not eligible under the by-laws, you have only one alternative and that is to elect only those eligible, with the number of votes accorded your lodge in the convention to be divided among those who are eligible and elected. A lodge does not forfeit any of its voting strength by not electing the

full total of delegates allotted to it.

Also,a lodge is not obligatedto elect a member as delegate just because they are eligible. In other words, lodges should select delegates who are both eligible and who they feel will act and vote in the best interests of the Society (not necessarily their lodge) during conventiondeliberations.

A lodge organized during the convention year may elect its dele­ gates and substitutes any time before the convention convenes.

Dear Readers: It was a real pleasure for me to attend the monthly meeting of Lodge 133 Sunday, September 18 at their lodge meeting place on Gevers Street. Forty-three members met to handle lodge business and enjoy an afternoon of fellowshiptogether.

President Emil Matula conducted the meeting efficiently and reminded members Lodge 133 will host the District VII fall social Sunday, October 30th at Comanche Park No. 3. The park opens at 10 a.m, and lunch will be served at -SPJST12:30p.m.

Troy Doug Staton was presented the Scholarship Certificate from the SPJST Supreme Lodge by Brother Roy Simank. Troy's parents were present for this occasion.

Jim Mogoyne presented a check on behalf of Albina Mogoyne for recycled cans.

The youth had a table of all their entries for District II YAD. They were arts, crafts, and lots of baked goods. They also presented their talent numbers: dancing, twirling and recitation. Two of them made State YAD, namely, Joeli McCullough and Melinda Harkins went to State with their talent and Dawn Peterson went to State with Foods. Congratulations to all of you.

Lodge 24 Changes Meeting Date Dear Members: Our meeting was called to order

The flag was presented to Kristie Waits and Christy Marek led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing in memory of our deceased member, Brother Joe Lee Coufal.

On the sick list, it was brought to our attention that we have Sister Rosie Stepan, however, before I got this letter into the Vestnik, Sister Rosiepassed away.

We were honored to have a young lady, Brenda Marek, a $500 SPJST Scholarship recipient; with her were her parents, Johnny and Betty

Marek, also her grandparents, Emil and Frances Hejl. President David Vanicek presented her with a check.

Our congratulations to you, Brendal She is attending Baylor University where she is majoring in Accounting.

Secretary Pat Vanicek read the correspondence; a thank you note from the Brother Charlie Stepan familyfor the flowers.

We have a large floor safe that we have no use for it anymore and it was brought up as to what can be done with it and it was decided to be given to one of our members who was financial secretary, Brother Franklin Martinec, for many years in the past and had made use of it then.

President David Vanicek was absent at our last meeting due to attending another meeting which is a project that SPJST willbe involved in (DHR).There are many ways we can help these abused children and we chose to help by collecting food and clothing and bringing it to our next meeting and our representa­ tives, Brother E. J. Geistman and Sister Laveda Geistman, will deliver them to the proper places, so please help and bring food for babies up to teens; clothes for babies to 5 years old is especially needed but up to age 13 willbe taken.

Brother Charlie- Waits got additional insurance which he wrote up for himself who also became a sales representative.

Assistant Youth Leader Shirley Waits gave us a report and mentioned two youth members who went to State YAD and won were Craig Waits in Constructed Items (13-14) and Kim Schneider in Foods (13-14). We congratulate them! Plans weren't decided on what kind of social they will be having this month. It will be announcedlater.

Health Committee Report: Sister Polly Gaidusek reported Brother Bill Cox is in a Temple hospital. We wish him good luck. We missed you at the meeting and we hope you will be home soon. A sympathy card was sent to Sister Frances Moore on the loss of her brother. A thank you note from the Willie Supak family was read.

Sister Jeanette Smith, on behalf of Sister Otho Morrow, said she wished to thank everyone for their kindness and for the donation made to the Libbie Parma Trust Fund and the SPJST Scholarship Fund. Sister Morrow is in a nursing home in Waco. We all wish her good health and good luck.

Welfare Committee Report: Sister Smith read a thank you note from Ella Myer, sister of Helen Shelton, for the donation to her; also a thank you note from Buddy Seay for the donation; also from the Schaeper family for the donation made to their daughter, Darla.

A letter was then read from the State School at Mexia on their Christmas project.

It was voted we donate $50 to Buddy Seay, $50 to Darla Schaeper, $100 to Muscular Dystrophy, for a total of $200. For the State School at Mexia, it was voted to take up donations on the floor; Brothers Emil Hanus, Bennie Engelke and Ira Niswanger took up collections, $74.40 was collected. Thanks to all of you for your generous donations, which made a total of $274.40for the month of September.

It was discussed that we have Mrs. Thelma Hrncir come to the Oct­ ober meeting to present her program on "Child Abuse and Neg­ lected " children program. It was voted due to Czech Day at the State Fair in Dallas, we have our meeting the second Sunday in October at 2 p.m. promptly. Please note this change.

Sister Libbie Parma reported on the Trust Fund. She said there would be a presentation made later in the meeting.

Lodge 177 Donates $500 To Charities

Good Attendance AtLodge.133 Meeting Lodge 133, San Antonio held their regular monthly meeting September 18, 1983 at 2 p.m. at 1505 S. Gevers Street. The attendance was very good, with 38 members attending.

We also had a surprise visit by District VII Director Sister Thelma Hrncir and her husband, Eugene, and daughter.

The meeting was opened by President Emil Matula at 2 p.m. leading the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Many topics of interest were discussed. The president reminded all that our lodge will host the District VII social October 30th.

This will be held at Comanche Park, the park will be open at 10 a.m. and dinner will be served at 12:30 p.m.

The meat and bread will be furnished by the local lodge, but it is requested that everyone bring a covered dish of vegetables and a dish of pastry. We will try to make it as pleasant as possible and, in case of rain, we will have the social at the hall located at 1505S. Gevers Street.

We hope that members in our district will circle that date on their calendar, and make every effort to attend.

President Jerry Tomastik called the September 14 meeting to order at 8 p.m. and then led the members present in the Pledge to our flag.

A thank you letter was read from Edward Bartek, president of the Academy Alumni, for the use of the lodge grounds, for their barbecue.

Discussion was held on the new Rules and Regulations, there are some changes to be made.

Ann Tomastik, Othene Jezek and Jackie Beck will be the coordinators for the lodge's involvement in the Child Abuse Program.

Dorothy Massey, our lodge bingo chairman, is vice president of the Cedar Ridge Campfire Girls. She requested a donation from our lodge, for this organization. Cecil La Grange made the motion to donate $300.00 to the Campfire Girls.

President Tomastik requested a vote on this matter. Members all voted to donate the $300.00.

Bruce Tomastik brought it to the members' attention of the Academy School Carnival to be held soon. He requested the lodge buy an ad in the school paper for the carnival and the members all voted to buy a full page ad.

President Tomastik asked the members if December 16th would be suitable to have our Lodge 177 Christmas Party, also to have Al's Barbecue to cater our meal.

Bruce Tomastik made the motion to have our Christmas Party December 16th and to be catered by Al's Barbecue. This motion was seconded by Dwayne Sefcik and all members agreed. · President Tomastik requested a vote on our meetings to start at 7:30 p.m. beginning with our October meeting, so members please make a note of this.

The dance will most likely be at the old lodge on Arkansas Lane; so keep in touch with your officers and plan to be there, have a good time and help CAN Program at the same time; this is the first time that Lodge 183, Mid-Cities has tried something of this type, so let's help make this a big success.

On the sick list is Lambert Pustejovsky; he is going into Arlington Memorial Hospital for surgery, so let's wish him a speedy recovery because he has been one of the hard-working members and has been at the lodge working most of the time and has helped to keep the lodge going.

The Building Committee is working with the builder and working out the problems with the new building; they will keep you · informed of the progress being made and when the building will be completed.

Remember, the saying that is as old as our nation, "United we stand, divided we fall." With all you lodge members working together great things can. be accomplished; as one member, very little can be done.

Some people complain about the thorns that grow on roses while others are glad that beautiful flowers grow on thorny bushes., Now, that all school children are back in school reminds me of the teacher who sent a note home with all the children first day of school: "If you promise not to believe all your child says happens at school, I'll promise not to believe everything he says happens at home."

Joyce Tesar r~ported that SPJST Lodge No. 92 will celebrate its 45th Anniversary October 9th. There will be a battle dance beginning at 3 p.m, and ending at 9 p.m, The two bands to play will be Eriz Honza, who I understand played for the opening dance 45 years ago, and the Ennis Country Boys. The admission ·for the dance will be $1.45 and a cup of beverage will only cost 45e. As you note, both figures end with a 45.

There will be no dinner served, but the kitchen will be open for sandwiches, kolaehe, etc. Everyone is invited to come and help the lodge celebrate its anniversary and just have a Sunday afternoon of fun and dancing.

To add to my long list of experiences was a recent meeting with three Czech men who had arrived at the DFW airport from Czechoslovakia and knew little English. It was most interesting to act as a Czech interpreter, because the Lutheren pastor in charge of the men was at a loss in knowing about their welfare, personal needs, etc. I wasted no time in seeing that the men were introduced to the Texas style Czech culture and also to the fact that, in Texas, we have so many Czechs that they rank 3rd in the state's population.

I wish to express many thank~ to Mydell Grochaske and her committee for the hospitality given to the men at the 5th Anniversary celebration of Lodge No. 180 in Burleson August 28th. To many of you who have been concerned about the men, especially, Brother and Vice-President Bernard Gebala, I wish to state that the men are attending English classes at North Texas State University in Denton and have also found employment. I have also been instrumental in locating a relative in Dallas to one of the men.

The 8th annual Westfest parade had about 85 entries, but not all were floats to be judged; so, being a parade judge along with Rose

Steinman and Margie Harrington, was a pleasure. It was a delight to see Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Kubala· involved in the Girl Scouts float. I might add that they did have a winning float; the girls worked hard to win and to be able to display 2nd place. It took many months of hard work by many people for a town the size of West to organize two days of festivity that included dances, entertainment, exhibits and activities within the festival grounds. I am sure a much-needed rest is on the agenda before it is time to get started on the 9th Westfest.

The Czech Cultural Society also extends an invitation to all of you to attend the Czech Day celebration Sunday, October 16th at the State Fair in Dallas.

Through organization, cooperation and dedication the Czech Fest at Lodge No. 84 in Dallas made the worthwhile festivity enjoyable for all in attendance.

Almost everyone who participated in the activities carried a winning item home. The various articles in the shopping booths were sold at bargain prices, and the selections were good. Likewise, the pastries, canned goods, cake mixes, etc. to be sold or won at gaming tables were of excellent quality. From Ben and Lillian Jarma's cake walk and pastry shop, I came home a winner with three cakes, from Rose Scott's plant shop, a lovely plant and from Bessie Petr's country store, a long summer sausage, plus other grocery store items.

Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Harold Strand for becoming grandparents for the first time.

Their daughter and son-in-lawlive in Ft. Worth.

To all of you in Ft. Worth who have lost account of Joe and Stella Baleja, I wish to state that they are both in the Apple Tree Nursing Center in Dallas. They would enjoy hearing from you.

Thursday, September 1st, we held our meeting with 31 members and the following guests present: Miro Jurcik, Bob Zvolanek, Joe Vrla, Gilbert Kalich, George Skotak, Arnold Vrla, John Trojacek and Tom Roberts.

A moment of silence was held for our deceased members Carrie Kebrle and Martha Dujka, Minnie Simcik (sister of Lillian Graeser) and Mary Smetak (sister-in-law of Mary Kubacak).

After the secretary and treasurer reports were made, Mary Sebestik read correspondence from: Boy's Ranch, "Thank You" card from the Dujka family, and "Thank You" from Frank Sebestik. There were also several donations read, which I will list under donations.

Adelle Vlk gave the treasurer report in the absence of our Vickie Kohn.

Committee reports given as follows: "Sunshine" "Get Well" card to Frank Sebestik. "Sympathy" to Dujka Family, Lillian Graeser, Frances McClure and Zdenka Skotak. Mary Sykova donated cards for our circle.

We discussed whether a member could ask to be excused from serving as hostess. According to our By­ laws, we are obligated to serve when we are called upon and we will con­ tinue abiding by this.

We have not received our check from the 4th of July Picnic Committee.

Under new business Anne Zvolanek welcomed our new member Anne Oates who was visit­ ing from Ohio.

We will donate a check to the An­ tonio Sedlacek family. Their son, Toni, was involved in a tragic car ac­ cident and the family has enourmous medical costs.

Esther Cunningham and husband, Robert, went to Belfort, France to attend the wedding of Robert's daughter, Gabrielle, to Yvan Py July 16th. They also enjoyed sight-seeing in Switzerland, Germany and the Franchecomte and Alsace districts of France. Esther's husband is on a two-week tour of duty with the Air National Guard at Torrejon Air Base, Madrid, Spain. Esther and some of her friends will soon be leaving for Baltimore, Maryland; Boston, Mass., and Chicago, Ill. They plan to stay on Nantucket Island for a few days.

August 27th Esther attended her 40th class reunion at her high school in Caldwell, Texas. She visited with her mother, Ella Fojt, who sends her love and greetings to all of the Krouzek members.

WHY I AM PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN

By Shana Patterson I'm proud to live in a country that I can truly call my home- a country that has its faults, and has been through a lot of hard times, but has always stayed strong- not only because of the people, but because of the love the people have for this beautiful and free nation.

So many times we forget just how lucky we are to live in America and truly be able to call ourselves Americans. How lucky we are to be able to go to our own church, with the freedom to be able to pick our own·religion, and usually.to eat what we want when we want it, while in other countries thousands are dying because of malnutrition. You see, just things like that we seem to ignore and forget, and we forget just how hard our ancestors had to fight for them.

I am proud we have so many freedoms, but I also know that those freedoms may not always be there for us to enjoy. · It seems to me that as the years go by, instead of pulling closer toget­ her we've been drifting apart. The love that was once so strong is start­ ing to fade and the pride is dis­ appearing. We've got to pull together and stand up for what is good and right instead of fighting among ourselves.

I am proud because of the beauty that stands within America- not only the land, but the people also; not only the beauty that lies on the outside, but the inner beauty as well. In 1776, a small group of men came together in agreement that every man should be allowed to have a decision about his own life. These men formulated a document called the "Declaration of Independence", which stated that all men were created equal and therefore had the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

To me, one of the greatest contri­ butions our country offers is an education of our choice. We are given the privilege of a free education regardless of intelligence or handicap. What better way to build a strong nation than through the development of the mind?

Whatever greatness this country holds, it is due to the minds of the individuals.

We have the right of religious freedom. Each person may decide which denomination .of faith best suits their opinions, convictions and conscience.

Whatever race, color, or creed, what is in store for this country will be determined by the generations to come, but if the past and present are any indications, the greatest nation of all will remain the United States of America.

One of the greatest men of all times was the 35th president of the United States, John F. Kennedy. He believed in what was important to our forefathers and gave his life in service for our great nation. He had no way of knowing that his words would forever be a shining star to mankind, as he stood and took his oath as president. His words reflect what every man who has given of himself for our country would feel.

He said, "Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country ."

Yes, I am proud to be an American and I want my country to be proud ofme.

As we enter the fall and holiday season (Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.), don't forget to plan some of your activities around these holidays. School will be out during part of the time, which should give our youth clubs a chance to fill that void.

FIRST QUARTERLY REPORT Dear Members: Reports for the first youth quarter for the months of June, July and August have been received and reimbursements are being sent to the participating clubs. As you can see, there are still a few lodges that do not submit a report, even though they may be qualififed for some re­ imbursement. We realize there are many things that an active youth leader has to do, but they should also fit into their schedule a little bit of time to make out these reports every three months. This first quar­ terly report was due September 15th. A few got in just "under the wire". Others wrote that they were "....so busy that I forgot the deadline". These funds are intended to help the youth club fjnance what­ ever activities they may want. The lateness or lack of reports can be partially attributed to the start of school and related activities. We are now entering a quarter which is tra­ ditionally a slow one for the Youth Department on the district and state levels, but certainly not on the lodge level.

LODGE 188YC REACTIVATED Dear Vestnik Readers, The SPJST Lodge 188 of Center­ ville had a meeting Sunday, September 11, 1983 and we discussed the rules and elected officers. We had the meeting because we .are trying to increase the program and to know a little more about the SPJST lodge.

Mr. Zettel was born in the Nelson­ ville Community January 26, 1926.

He was the son of William and Louisa (Shupak) Zettel.

He was a member of the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Bellville and the Nelsonville SPJST Lodge No. 68. Mr. Zettel was a carpenter by profession.

He married Miss Bernice Noska in Ellinger, October 24, 1954.

Funeral services were held from the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church June 29, at 10 a.m. with Father Sylvester Fuchs officiating.

Burial was in the Bellville Pilgrim's Rest Cemetery.

Survivors include: wife, Mrs. Bernice Zettel of Bellville; daughters, Deborah and Darlene Zettel of Bellville; sisters and brothers-in-law, Adella and Lloyd Cook of Navasota, Annie and Oscar Schomburg of Bellville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Alvin and Helen Zettel of New Ulm, Willie and Tommie Zettel of Freeport, August and Lena Zettel of New Ulm, and Ladislav Zettel of Nelsonville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Franklin, and an infant sister.

Dnes bych chtěla něco napsat co

možná bude zajímat ětenáře. Týká se to rodiny Bairdové zde v Dallas, která prodává chleba pod jménem Mrs. Baird's Bread. Paní Bairdová zaěala péci chleba před lety pro rodinu a své přátelé, ale pak když manžel onemocněl na cukrovku a nemohl pracovat, tak ona musela živit rodinu. To bylo v roce 1908 a koupen byl vůz s koněm a chleba se rozvážel po městě. Během let pak synové zaěali pracovat v té pekárně a pak se obchod zvýšil, budova se přistavovala a předělávala a vše šlo pak lépe a lépe. Paní Bairdová zemřela v 1961 a nyní již pátá generace se stará o pekárnu. Mají pekárny v mnoha jiných městech v Texasu a jejich chleba jde i do jiných států. Slyšela jsem, že v Ennis, Tx., budou zase Machovských vyuěovat tančení po 5 týdnů počínaje 21. září pro ty· kteří jsou zaěátníci. To bude vždy od 7 do 8. hodin veěer. Pak ještě jeden kurs bude podáván a sice ve středu 21. září od 8:30 do 9:30 veěer. Zde manžele Machovských a syn budou hledět každého naučit těm tancům. Pro mladé lidi to bude dobré a pro ty starší zase je trochu poveselit a sejít se s lidmi. Ceny za kursy budou $18.00 za jednoho člověka a $32.00 za dvojice. Znám Machovskou rodinu dobře a přeji jim mnoho úspěchu v tomto počínání.

Ačkoliv máme již hodně hotelů zde i poblíže Dallasu, přece stále se hotely staví. Nyní bude zase se snad stavit hotel Granada který bude míti děvet poschodí a 344 světnic poblíže Irving, Tx. Myslím, že každý se chce připravit na tu republikánskou konvenci v 1984 - ale až bude po konvenci tak jestli pak jim to bude vynášet? Vždyť říkají, že peněz není nazbyt a přece stavby stojí hodně peněz,že?

Tak je pořád něco nového. Jistá špolecnost vynalézla stroj který je 10 stop vysoký a váží ětyři tisíce liber, do kterého se dá aluminiová plechovka od piva. Tato plechovka je pak smačknutá, zvážená a puštěná dolů do schránky. Stroj vyplatí peníze tomu kdo tam plechovku hodil a vše je pěkně odbyté. Stroj se jmenuje "CanBank" a už je v mnoha státech použivany. Tedy kdo nechce se zlobit s plechovkami tak nyní bude bez starosti a bez práce. Úředníci od Naturalizaění služby si mysleli, že když pochytají ty nezakonité Mexičany, tak že je pěkně na husu dovezou zpět domů do Mexika až vnitřku té země, že pak tito zůstanou už ve své zemi. Ale zklamali se neboť mexikánské lidi nechtí jíti domů, kde na ně čeká chudoba a starost. Oni raději chtí se najít v Americe práci a pomoci si finančně a své rodině v Mexiku také.

Někteří již jeli třikráte domů a jak měli příležitost tak ujeli sem k nám zase. Je tu už velice moc těch nezakonitých cizinců a práce pro všecky také není, tak je to zlé. ·<·~~
