Minutes of the Fall, District II, SPJST 1983 Meeting Round Rock, Texas Fraternal Affairs

By Thelma Hrncir Lodge 25, Ennis, hosted a "Child Abuse and Neglect" program for area lodges Friday night, September 2nd, at its lodge home.

The film and program was presented by District III Director Sid Pokladnik of Dallas and Ms. Mary Ann Jennings, Region 5 Child Protective Service worker. Brother Raymond Zapletal, president of Lodge 25, coordinated local arrangements.

Sunday, September 11th, Lodge 160, San Angelo, was host to Director Thelma Hrncir, SPJST Project Coordinator and Mr. Manny Maldonado, Region 4 Protective Service worker, who presented the Child Abuse and Neglect program following their quarterly meeting held at the Wall Firemen's Hall.

President Laddie Socha was in charge of local arrangements.

Participating lodges are encouraged to select their Fraternal Affairs' Directors and send their names to Sister Hrncir. DHR contact workers will supply lists of needs for the lodges' selection.

The call to order for the fall meeting of District II was made by D. I. Bohac, District II President.

The colors were presented by the Flag Bearers Shawn Young of Elgin and Mark Steger of Taylor. The audience recited the Pledge of Allegiance and stood for a silent moment in honor of the deceased members.

The audience was welcomed by Lodge No. 187, Round Rock, President Ohlman.

The roll call of officers indicated all were present. The roll call of lodges showed Beyersville-10, Elgin20, Academy-9, Round Rock-41, Taylor-48, Holland-3, Temple-6, Seaton-9 and Granger-6.

The minutes of the Spring meeting were read by Secretary Judith Prinz, and approved as read.

There was no correspondence.

The District II officers reported as follows: District II Director Henry Vitek noted that the SPJST history will be in print soon after the first of the year and indicated that orders need to be placed early so that the number printed will be sufficient.

He also reminded the assembly that any changes in the By-laws must be submitted to the By-laws committee early so that they can be researched and publicized as necessary. He closed by extending best wishes from the Home Office.

Youth Leader Frank Klinkovsky reported that a good summer camp with 115 juniors and 56 teenagers was held. He recognized the chaperones and youth leaders. After introducing the newly-elected District King Joe Giarrusso, he explained that the youth would bowl from 3-5 and then return for the evening's activities.

Treasurer Willie Kohutek gave the balances of $1,196.37 in the Youth Account and $469.82 in the General Account.

Supreme Lodge President and District II member Nick Morris made several informational inserts.

He mentioned that the report of the Convention schedule will appear in the Vestnik and asked that delegates and membership make plans so that the schedule can be adhered to He spoke briefly about St ate YAD to be held in Temple High School. He recognized the sales representatives and encouraged everyone to advise them of any prospective members since the local lodge gets 8%.

Brother Leshikar was present and expressed thanks to all for the help with the Rest Home Program and especially to those who helped with the 25th anniversary celebration.

Lodge 80, Holland, invited the District II to meet at their lodge home for the Spring, 1984, meeting.

The meeting adjourned to an a iternoon of fellowship, food, and tun. Brother Morris presented his musical group for the enjoyment of all. The evening meal was free to all who, had registered for the meeting as well as the dance which followed the afternoon's entertainment.

V Family Day District

Dear Members: Plans are being made for a great "District V Family Day" on the second Sunday in October (Oct. 9th) at. Lodge No. 88, 1435 Beall Street, Houston. We hope you are making plans to attend this special event.

A "Covered Dish Dinner" starts at 12:30. Each family is asked to bring a dish — vegetable, casserole or salad — and the district will furnish the meat. Registration starts at 11:30.

We will have a "Quilt and Bed Spread Show", and first, second, and third place ribbons will be given in each category. The following members are on this committee: Chairman Mary Schenburn, Vlasta Nowotny, Mary Ann Kieschnik, Henrietta Krenek, Delores Prochazka and Evelyn Sefcik.

Rosalee Kostom will be in charge of a beautiful display of articles from Czechoslovakia — crystal, dolls, etc.

Another interesting display will be of Czech costumes by Frances Olexa who will be glad to explain anything you wish to know about the costumes.

The program, which starts at 2 p.m., will include a comical wedding, skits, dances and musical numbers.

Anyone of any age can participate in this program.

We are fortunate to have a member who is a very talented accordionist, Weinart Grohmann,

who will entertain us with his accordion. As most of you know, Weinart plays with the "Knights of Dixie", teaches accordion and guitar playing at his "Oak Forest Music Studio", and does single work accordion playing at various functions. I know you will enjoy his polkas and waltzes.

The presidents of the lodges in our district make up the Executive Committee; we hope you will discuss this fully in your meetings. Please don't forget to mail the postal card

by September 21st so we get a good idea of how many members of your lodge plan to come. This is very important so we know how much meat to prepare.

With your help and cooperation, this will be a great day for our district!

A delicious fried chicken dinner with trimmings and with side dishes and desserts brought by members was served at noon. The dinner prayer was by Annie Vahalik.

Following dinner a short meeting was held with Lodge President Frank Zabransky presiding. He welcomed everyone and introduced District VI Director Matt Vanek and wife, Henrietta, of Victoria. Director Vanek gave an informative talk to the members on the progress of SPJST. Resolutions of sympathy were read by Gaye Galetka for our deceased members, Frank J. Konvicka, Charles Holly and Joe E. Bialek. Brother Charles Holly was corresponding secretary and sales representative for our lodge for over 35 years. He was a loyal member and took a keen interest in the progress of our lodge and SPJST. Co-Youth Leader Gaynelle Chudej recognized Janelle and Gary Chudej for their achievements at the District VI YAD held in July; Janelle placed third in Pictorial Arts in ages 13-14; Gary received second in Science/Educational Exhibit in 10 12 and third in Pictorial Arts, ages 10-12.

It was announced by President Zabransky that he was notified by SL Vice President Bernard M. t-xl ebala that Laurie Chudej has been tentatively selected for an SPJST College Undergraduate scholarship.

Laurie is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alton Chudej.

Drawings for prizes were then held. The youth club money-making project winners were: Henrietta Vanek, Alfonse Holy, Sandy Voskamp, A. C. Rabel and Henry Muenster.

Door prizes of SPJST items donated by Director Matt Vanek were won by Alvin Mikush, Delores Holly, Amos Ilosek, Frankie Woytek, Henry Muenster, Albina Spanihel and Victor Woytek.

Lodge door prize winners were Evelyn Holy, A. C. Rabel and Ida Neubauer.

Daryl Kortis and Woodrow Marek, flagbearers, led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. The members remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of two departed members: Dorman Jones and Emma

Psencik. May their souls rest in eternal peace.

Visitors at this meeting were Ann Balusek, Gertrude Kahlig, Eugene, Thelma and Angie Hrncir from Corpus Christi, and Mr. and Mrs. Tupy.

All officers and chairpersons were present and gave satisfactory reports.

Correspondence consisted of thank you notes from the Emma Psencik family, Frank Chupik family, and Dorman Jones family for wreaths; also, a thank you note from Albina Mikeska for being remembered when she was in the hospital.

New members accepted into our membership were: Calvert G. Helms, Ellen Kay Jez, Jennifer Kay Jez, Edmond Ray McCoslin, Freida Popelka, Billie Marie Janeway and Adrian J. Jez. We welcome all these new members.

Johnny Chupik, Frances Richardson, Clarence Sodek and Albin (Butch) Sodek were reported on the sick list. Since our meeting Anna Hejl was also in the hospital. We wish all of you a very speedy recovery.

A special thanks to Woodrow Marek for spraying grass around the buildings.

Board minutes were read by Vallie Zavodny. The next board meeting will be Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 7:30 p.m.

Rules and Regulations were passed out with changes for the members to review. These will be acted on in our October meeting.

The recipients of the special SPJST scholarship awards will be honored in our October meeting.

They are Karen Jez, Gena Odstrcil, Kathy Odstrcil and Melissa Simcik.

Mary Ann Billeck gave her youth club report. She stated that James Billeck won a 1st place in State YAD and Kim Craft placed 2nd. We are proud of these members.

Thelma Hrncir gave a brief report on the "Child Abuse" program which SPJST is promoting. She suggested the lodge have volunteer workers to see what the needs of the child abuse shelter actually are.

Appointed to the Salary Committee are: Frankie Klinkovsky, Daniel Wiley and Lucy Mihatsch.

There will also be an audit of all books Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 7:30 p.m.

Birthdays celebrated in September are Frances Hejl, Emil Hejl, Elsie Sodek and Anna Jakubec.

Happy anniversary to J. D. and Vallie Chlapek, Calvin and Dolores Skrabanek, and Leo and Gertrude Kahlig.

Our regular monthly meeting was held September 12th at 7:30 p.m.

President James Wilcox opened the meeting and Jerry Michka led the assembly in the Pledge of Allegiance.

We are happy to have all these new members in our lodge.

Youth Leader Linda Michka was surprised when she was given a check for $50 for the youth club, at our meeting, from the Rudy Hafner Family of El Campo, Texas. Rudy Hafner was the first president of Lodge 74 and his wife, Alice, was the first youth leader who was a wonderful youth leader; she gave so much of her time to the young people. They all remember her and love her. All the officers and trustee members appreciate the donation from the Hafners to the youth club.

Our youth club has really been busy, they have performed three times the past month, namely, at State Youth Achievement Day, the Westfest, and at the local Benefit Variety Show held in Crockett.

Jerry and Linda Michka danced at the Variety Show, also.

The youth club scrapbook won first place in State Competition in Temple. Lodge 74 members are really proud of our youth leaders and youth club.

Mrs. Slivena Michka is still sick, however, we hope she feels better real soon. We miss seeing her at our Saturday night socials.

Our regular monthly meeting was held September 11, 1983 with a very good attendance.

Committee chairpersons gave their reports. Birthday cards were sent to members reaching 65 years or older during the month of August.

Get well cards were sent to members confined in hospitals (7 at home). Sympathy cards were sent to families of our departed members and friends. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Rick Hubenak of Conroe, Texas on the arrival of a baby girl, Heather Ann. Proud grandmother is Mrs. Peggy Hubenak and proud great-grandfather is Richard Hubenak. Also congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Matt Russell of Alexandria, Virginia, parents of son, Christopher. The proud grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Bobby McMillen and proud great-grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. W. H. McMillen.

Congratulations to Paul Hubenak on being named Photo Editor of School Paper, Northwest Passage of Tarrant Junior College, Northwest Campus. Paul is the son of Brother and Sister Joe Paul Hubenak of Lodge 92.

Sharon Jungman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Jungman is visiting her parents after a lengthy tour of Eastern part of the United States.

Sharon has been a member of the Ice Capades since 1982; while performing in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, she has the opportunity to spend some time with her parents.

Sharon says it is a lifetime dream of hers to skate with the Ice Capades.

Lodge 92 will be celebrating its 45th anniversary of their present lodge building Sunday, October 9, 1983. We are planning a Battle Dance after a short meeting. Oct. 2nd Meeting For Lodge 142

Our monthly meeting was called to order at 8 p.m. by President Mary Ann Kieschnick.

The 32 members present stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag. They remained standing for a few moments of silence in memory of our departed Brother Theodore (Pete) Zahn and our departed Sister Olga Drisga. May their souls rest in peace.

The minutes from the previous meeting were read by Secretary Alice Jochen, after she held roll call of officers. All officers were present at this meeting.

All officers' reports were given; bar and board reports were also given.

We were glad to report three new members with Brother Sidon Tumis being the sales representative, namely, Glendon H. Roemer, Tonya K. Lyons and Ludivina S. Cardenas.

We had a capsule attendance prize drawing for $50; sorry, Eugene W. Stepanek was absent.

The consolation prize of $5 went to Mary Ann Kieschnick, and door prizes were won by Rita Hermis, Velma Alexander, Eugene Veselka and E. F. Stein.

Second Sunday, October 9th will be Family Day for District V at Lodge 88, so please bring a covered dish enough for your family; the meat will be furnished by District V. This event is in place of our District V fall meeting. See you all there!

Lodge 154 Ft. Worth Sets Oct. 9th Meeting

Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting yesterday was called

to order by our vice president, Brother Don Steinman, in the absence of our president, Bfother Jerry Milan, who was out-of-town.

The members stood for a moment of silence for our deceased Brother Dr. Richard McKee. Brother Hamilton was made welcome after a long absence.

All the reports were approved after a minor change.

Sister Carolyn Cleveland reported the youth club will have their meeting Thursday night.

Several of the members could not attend yesterday due to prior commitments. They will discuss their plans for the Halloween Party because Carolyn will be in Hawaii, the next meeting date.

New members accepted were Allison Crider and William Jordan Milan.

Brother Steinman reported on the District III Sales Representatives' meeting we hosted and said how much everyone enjoyed the dinner Sister Mary Renfro prepared. We enjoyed having it.

He also reminded everyone of Czech Day at the Fair Sunday, October 16th, and District III meeting for October 30th at Lodge 35, Elk. Congratulations go to Brothers and Sisters Joe and Carrie Milan on their 39th anniversary and Jerry and Henrietta Milan on their 26th.

News From Lodge 172, Pasadena

Dear Members and Friends: With Labor Day weekend retreat (at the Hus Encampment) behind us, we are trying to catch up at home.

For about 20 years a group of us (about 50) from Pasadena gettogether to plan a Labor Day Retreat weekend from Friday p.m. through Monday morning. The Hus Encampment is owned and operated by the Unity of the Brethren Church (previously known as the CzechMoravian Church). It is located about 5 miles from Caldwell in a wooded area, less than one mile from the New Tabor SPJST Lodge No.

17. The two dormitories, two duplex cottages and kitchen are all airconditioned. There is a large recreation room and plenty of space outdoors for all kinds of activities.

At night the stars are bright and in the morning the cool outdoor air is so fresh, everything is calm and quiet and beautiful. If you happen to go by there, stop and look around.

The caretakers are very nice. There is a summer program for groups of young people every year and much more.

Our August regular lodge meeting was well-attended. All reports were given and were good.

We are busy at this time with many activities coming up. The September 11th dinner/dance will have taken place before this reaches the Vestnik and so will our September 16th Al Pierson and Big Band USA dance. I do hope that all of you always read the advertisements on the SPJST Calendar page in the Vestnik. It is usually on the inside of the last page. I have a habit of always looking there first.

Several recent improvements were made at our hall. The stage was extended, shelves were built in back of the kitchen area so that all boxes with paper goods would be off the floor, a cover over the barbecue pit was built. All labor on all this work was donated. The following members did this work and much more, namely, Brothers Albert Risinger, Joe Krenek, Jerry Dressler, Tommy Wallace, Julius Zella, Willie Walla and Joe Tanecka.

I hope I didn't skip somebody. The lodge appreciates your work. Many people have said, "You have such wonderful members at your lodge."

Yes, we sure have. Please tell them how much their work is appreciated.

The lodge needs workers and maybe you would like to do something.

Don't be bashful to come and ask. I believe there will be some work on the parking and driveway areas coming up soon. There is always work of some type going on around here.

The October 9th Family Festival will be held in the mall at Pasadena Town Square from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

We will have an SPJST booth and we will be selling whole cakes and kolache by the dozen. This will call for the ladies to bake, bake, bake.

Please do because some of the ladies will double and triple doing the work for those who can't do it. We love you for it. This project is a good one and many of us are looking forward to it. There will be lots of people attending this. The only way we can make lots of money is to have lots of cakes and kolache to sell. Don't forget October 9th is the date!

Only one more thing and I will stop; that is to tell you to help us start a Czech class at our hall; it would meet once a week, probably on Thursday night; young/old are welcome and you are never too old to learn.

the minutes of the July meeting were read by Secretary Frances Simmank. They were approved as read.

Well, the 5th anniversary has come and gone. Thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make this a successful and happy anniversary; to each one of you, I take my hat off to you and say "thanks"; also everyone had enough to eat. They also relaxed and enjoyed the entertainment that was presented. I, as reporter, want to thank each of the performers: Marie Tankersley for the music playing during dinner, Brother Sid Pokladnik for the beautiful dance music (some of the audience couldn't resist and hit the dance floor), the Beseda and Folk dancers for their beautiful dancers and their costumes were so colorful; each one had on a different color.

We were all surprised when Dennis Barabas called all the way from Saudi Arabia; some of the workers got to talk to him. He said to tell everyone "hello" and that he missed everyone. Gee, Dennis, you don't know what you missed! We hope he will be home in time for the Christmas dinner.

On the sick list this month was Rudy Hrabal who had another heart attack. He spent some time in the St. Joseph Hospital, then a few days in Harris hospital. I talked to him tonight and he said that he was feeling better. We were sorry to hear that he was ill. Take care, Rudy, everyone is thinking about you and everyone's prayers are for a full recovery.

I had hoped to see more of our members at the August meeting.

Remember, this is your lodge, so come on out and get involved and support it. I hope to see more members at our September 20th meeting at 7:30 p.m.

Just a reminder that we have a country/western band each Saturday night; the admission is $6 per person, children 12 years of age and under are admitted free. The dance dates are booked as follows: Saturday, September 22-Gentres, Saturday, October 1st-Country Junction (this is a new band from Crowley, next door to Burleson).

Come out and enjoy their dance music. If you don't dance just come out and meet new friends and have a good time. We have off-duty guards from the Johnson County Sheriffs department. Remember, everyone is welcome! Be sure and bring your own bottle; setups at the bar are free; kitchen will be open for short orders, juices, etc.

The Saturday, September 10th dance was small but those present had a good time; it seems the crowd is waiting for the new building.

The regular monthly meeting was held at the lodge hall with all loyal members attending. All reports were read and accepted.

There was a moment of silence for our departed member, Brother Ray Stracener.

One new member was accepted and the lodge welcomes her and we hope that she will enjoy the fellowship fraternalism of SPJST. A fund-raising project special dance is being planned in the future for the lodge's "Child Abuse and Neglect" project so keep in touch with the officers of the lodge.

October will be a busy month in the Metro-plex; there will be Oktoberfest in Fort Worth Convention Center, Czech Day in Texas at the Dallas Fair in Dallas, and Oktoberfest at Trader's Village in Grand Prairie for any of you who like to do something different.

Three sales representatives, Daniel Roznovsky, Inez Greenlees and I, plus two visitors, Gracie Kneschk and Juanita Cote, attended the sales seminar/dinner in Ennis August 29 and enjoyed the dinner and fellowship of the SPJST members from around Ennis and had a very informative message from SFM Gene McBride.

Seaton Choral Club News Although the clouds looked threatening and might have dampened the spirits of some members, the Seaton Choral Club members were in fine tune — practicing for their October 16th engagement at the State Fair of Texas Czech Day. Those present and singing lustily were Dorothy Morris, Lillian Mikulec, Frank Mikulec, Martha Klusacek, Dorothy Pechal, Anne Krcha, Jerry Urubek, Agnes Schiller, Otto Hanus, Ruby L. Bolton, Eleanora and Frank V. Spanhel, Emily Stuteville, Thelma Bartosh, Helen and Henry Janacek, our accompanist.

A "Happy Birthday" was sung to Dorothy Morris.

Dorothy Morris, president, presided at the business meeting; mintues of the two previous meetings were read and approved. The bus trip to Dallas was discussed ... Oct. 4th is the final date for Choral Club members to notify Martha Klusacek if they plan to go to Dallas on the bus; also all members are urged to attend at least one of the two remaining rehearsals so that they can learn the new songs which the club plans to sing.

The dance Saturday night, September 10, with the famous KNIGHTS OF DIXIE Orchestra, was very nicely attended with guests braving the nasty weather. All day Saturday, the day was just beautiful with sunny skies, but, around five o'clock, a blanket of black clouds covered the sky and it was like night time when the lightning zig-zagged and thunder claps roared one after another, followed by a downpour of rain resembling a cloud burst. It rained about over an hour flooding the streets and overflowing sewers; when it finally stopped, the skies were still dark. I arrived at the lodge at 8 p.m., and there was no one there but the faithful committee members.

But, lo and behold, by 9 and 9:30 hardly any of the reservations were cancelled and many came, as usual, without reservations and it turned out to a very nice evening of dancing A fifth SPJST generation was added June 29, 1983 to the Sodek Family with our favorite orchestra "The Tree. Pulley; at the door Kathy Trefel greeted the guests; both sisters were dressed in lovely evening gowns. Dub Pulley (husband of Gladys) with Mike Trefel (husband of Kathy) were busy seating the guests. The "TWINS" as I call them, again wore identical white gowns, namely, Irene Slovacek in the ticket office, and Erna O'Conner in the lobby took care of reservations for the AL PIERSON dance scheduled for this coming Saturday, September 24.

At this dance, even if trying to forget the terrible hurricane, ALICIA, the conversation in many groups just came up again and again.

The damages to our members and guests were huge and hard to wipe out of their minds. This was one time I have been glad I live in an apartment.

A 25th wedding anniversary was observed for Mr. and Mrs. James Hoepfl with a group of their friends to make it a special event. The happy bride, Patsy, in a lovely gown and a beautiful corsage is our Lodge No. 88 member.

The other day I had a surprise; when I was ready to drive out, two lovely young people on bicycles drove through our circular driveway and waved at me and called "Hello Olexa" and, before I knew it, they were on Memorial Drive. Two days later the same thing happened, again, and I was puzzled who it could be. I tried to catch up with them but the street lights changed and I had to move with a question on my mind.

Today the puzzle was solved: Stacy Kocich called and told me it was her son, Dennis, and his friend, Debbie. I do know them but don't see them too often and it was such fleeting moments when they drove by, that it just did not register in my mind and it worried me. Now it's clear and thanks for the surprise; next time I will know you.

Again, we parted with one of our elderly members who had a hand in building our Lodge 88 from the early beginning; Sister Emily Anna Bednar, age 91, passed away September 6, 1983. Rosary was recited Wednesday, September 7, at 7:30 p.m. in the Heights Funeral Chapel. Funeral services were held Thursday at 11 a.m. September 8, at ALL SAINTS CATHOLIC CHURCH with Father Joe Szyniczak officiating. Entombment was in Holy Cross Mausoleum. She is survived by two sons, Charles V. Bednar and Emil J. Bednar and four grandchildren, all of Houston. We express our sincere sympathy to the surviving family.

The Czech Heritage Society of South Texas held its meeting at 2:30 p.m. August 28, 1983 in the SPJSTSokol Hall.

After the regular quarterly meeting, there was a program presented by the Corpus Christi Czech Singers.

The attendants were entertained by the fifteen singers who sang 12 songs; among them were "The Star Spangled Banner" and "Kde domov muj?"; all were recorded on my cassette.

The large applause was a reward to the singers; you may see from this picture that this group of singers is in the need of more younger personnel.

Afterwards supper was served at 5 p.m. and dance started from 6 p.m. and was held until 10 p.m.

Regrettably, the attendance at the meeting has dropped somewhat.

Descendants' Search Mary Stavinoha Lichnosky descendants needed for Stavinoha Family Tree.

Born in Czechoslovakia and coming to Texas in 1860 she settled in Fayette County with her parents, Andreas and Marianna Stavinoha; a sister, Theresa; two brothers, Ignac and Frank.

She married Frank Lichnosky in 1876. She lived in El Campo, Texas (Wharton County) for about 45 years and died there in December 1940 and was buried in the 0.D.H.S. Cemetery in El Campo.

August 16 Lodge 179, Warrenton Youth Club took 26 members and leaders to enjoy a cruise around Lake Buchanan to the mouth of the Colorado River. We floated on the waterways once used by the Apache Indians, through a wilderness incredibly old, beautiful and scenic, with waterfalls, springs, towering cliffs and wild game. We then had a picnic for dinner on an island in Lake Buchanan.

For our homeward journey we toured the lake areas, including Lake LBJ, and the mountain terrain toward Taylor the long way home.

We had supper at Taylor and then proceeded homeward.

Dear Readers, August 28, 1983 at 4 p.m., the youth club had its volleyball tournament with the big lodge members.

The best two out of three games won; the first game was won by the youth members, the second by the adults, and the third by the youth members. Many youth members and adults attended this function.

Youth members who attended were Lisa Rejcek, Kathleen Rejcek, Sharon Rejcek, Melissa Macalik, Amy Macalik, Kimberly Macalik, Gail Macalik, Karen Honza, Michael Honza, Robert Honza, Arlene Honza, Vicki Martinek, Melanie Kudrna, Kevin Kudrna, Michell Zapletal, and Andrew Zapletal. The adults who represented the big lodge included Dorothy and Louis Kudrna, Glenn Kudrna, Betty Macalik, Margaret Krajca, Laurie Krajca, Raymond Zapletal and Marlene Timms.

Guests were Joey Valek, Judy Kudrna and Michael Chapman. We also had cheerleaders who were Adell Rejcek, youth leader, Annette Honza, Miranda Timms and Erin Kudrna.

After the volleyball game we had refreshments of watermelon, cold drinks and sundaes.

We are also planning to go to Six Flags.

There were 17 members and 2 guests present at the meeting; the guests were Sharon Borak and Jared Dybala.

The guests who came along included Adell Rejcek (youth leader), Raymond Zapletal, Pat Zapletal, Danny Zapletal and Judy, Glenn and Erin Kudrna.

We had only one member who placed; Michelle Zapletal won second place playing the piano in Individual Talent.

Life of the Dvorak Family 1910-1983

By Frances Olexa (Continued from Previous Issue) The first farm my parents rented was from Mr. Levridge in East Bernard where we stayed three years. This box house was our first and real home here in America. Two large rooms and a long room all across the length of the house called the "backroom". Before we moved in the whole family was busy cleaning the premises and especially the inside of the living quarters (called our castle) which were infested with bedbugs. Out in the yard, with a fire under a heavy black kettle to boil water, this was used to spray the inside walls and the crevices to get rid of the nasty insects. With my mother's determination this was finally accomplished and the inside of this humble home was so clean, food could have been served off the floor. After that every blessed Saturday mother and I, on our knees, would scrub the wooden floors and my part was always inspected by mother for approval.

On this farm we lived three years with the nicest neighbors on one side, namely, Mr. and Mrs. John Vacek with a large family of nine or ten chi/dren. Through the three years, we became very close friends.

My father, a Free-Thinker, and Mr. Vacek, a devout Catholic, carried on discussions about religion, politics and everyday problems, but never argued. Many interesting and some comical incidents stayed in my mind of these two wonderful men; when debating about controversial problems, it was a pleasure to watch them. Mr. Vacek was helpful to father with farming problems, advising him because he had no knowledge of farming whatsoever.

(At that time Mr. Vacek told father about the worthless planter I earned for six months of service), my first earnings in America! Father never forgot the valuable help he got from our friendly neighbor, Mr. John Vacek. Angelina, their oldest daughter, and I became good friends through the years we lived there. On Sundays, I very seldom missed going to church with them and I think of it many times.

On the other side, we had German neighbors, Milcsh and Senger, also very nice and friendly. Down the road lived the Kubala family; three boys and one girl, Angelina, Lawrence, the oldest and twins, Method and Cyril. About fifteen years later, we met again in Houston at Lodge No. 88 and saw each other frequently. Faith plays unexplainable tricks in our lives. When I sold my home and moved to this apartment, I found out the manager of the apartment complex of seven hundred units is Dorothy Blackwood, daughter of Cyril Kubala, now deceased. East Bernard at that time, just as now, was a Czech settlement and names like Polak, Zapalac, Janik, Genzer, Marik, Prazak,

Survivors include four daughters, Pauline Zidek of Floresville, Genevierie Kiolbassa of San Antonio, Betty Jean Manak of Poth and Margaret Ann Moore of San Antonio; and one brother, Anton Richter of Floresville.

May our departed lodge brother rest in eternal peace and may his memory live among us forever.

During the three years Rudy, Joe and I attended the Middle Bernard School and, at that time, our teacher was Miss Parma and for a short time Miss Frances Dvorak (Chalupnik), half-sister of my sister-in-law, Janie Dvorak (Polak). Brother John loved to break horses and was quite successful at it, and broke several.

For some time he worked as a farm hand for Mrs. Johana Polak and there he fell in love with her daughter, Janie.

From East Bernard we moved, for one year, to Richmond where father rented a farm on the banks of the Brazos River. The boys just loved it, any spare time they would spend on the river in a small rowboat. Fishing was good and we enjoyed the fresh catfish at many of our family meals.

Mother was always worried when the boys went swimming and diving, we all knew there were dangerous deep places and lucky nothing dramatic ever happened.

After one year we moved about five miles out of Rosenberg where father rented a farm from Judge C. H. Chernosky in 1914 and the following year 1915 was our first experience to live through a tropical storm. The cotton was all open and ready to be picked. Our whole family, from daybreak to nightfall, were in the field to harvest as much as possible. That year a lot of the cotton was ruined. The windmill had to be anchored down but the storm tore it up anyway. The roof on the house was leaking like a strainer and it kept mother and me busy all night to mop the water off the floor. At midnight the wind quieted down and we were happy it was over. We did not know we were in the middle of the storm's eye and the worst was yet to come. Of course with the storm the crop did not yield very much, but the following five years were fair, but still not good enough for father to try and buy some land on time. He always thought they will save enough to buy outright for cash; this of course was wishful thinking. To buy anything would have been the right time while all of us were at home. The years followed and we children, one by one, were leaving the family nest •and struck out on our own and the family was getting smaller and smaller.

The six years on this farm we made many friends: Spaceks were our closest neighbors, Vivial, Nemec, Janca, Tobola, Wiesner and Podlipny (he owned the Jewelry Store in Rosenberg and married one of the Tobola girls.) There were about 40 young people in the vicinity and together we always had a wonderful time at our parties; I think of the young people now; they have no idea what can be enjoyed without a car or a lot of money. Most of the time we would walk in groups for a mile or two to our neighbor's party, and when it was farther we would share a buggy or hack and no one complained. During that time we even put on a stage play and held programs in the Czech language.

Brother Frank painted the stage curtain his first painting in Rosenberg.

The stage was in an abandoned old building. When the war broke out there were many patriotic celebrations. Mrs. Vlasta Chernosky, wife of the late Judge C. H. Chernosky, was always the leader in these patriotic projects. She would use her own piano when she accompanied us young people in Czech and English patriotic and folk songs. She did not mind climbing a truck on which a flat top was placed for her piano and the chorus. Many a time the Fourth of July celebration would be rained on and the streets of Rosenberg turned into nice black mud, but that did not stop the festivity and the show went on.

Many a straw hat (and new) worn the first time or a new outfit would get sopping wet, but nobody minded at all. Mrs. Vlasta Chernosky was a great lady.

With all the war's enthusiasm, brother Frank, at the age of eighteen enlisted in the Czech Legion without consulting our parents; he felt it was his duty to help defend our new home, United States, as the two older brothers

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 88, on behalf of the entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of JOHN LOMICA 86, who died July 4, 1984, at the Pasadena Care Center. He was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 88.

Brother Lomica was born on May 7, 1897 in Czechoslovakia. He came here in 1903 and lived most of his life in Houston and Pasadena.

His survivors are: two sisters, Anna Hlavaty and Rose Sebesta of Pasadena. His parents and two brothers preceded him in death.

The funeral service was held July 6, 1983, at Wheeler Funeral Chapel at El Campo with Rev. Havalah officiating. Interment was at ODHF Cemetery.

May Honor be given his memory now and forever.

Vlada and John not being citizens could not enlist in the U.S. Army.

Frank was shipped out immediately with other volunteers from Houston; they were shipped to France and placed as Czech Legionairres with the French troops. He was lucky and came home without any ill effects.

After the Armistice their troops landed in Czechoslovakia and he was determined to locate our relatives; he was lucky and found uncles and cousins and, while visiting, he was informed there was a small interitance for our mother and was held by authorities in trust for the family.

Frank collected the meager amount, enough to have a new uniform made to fit a general. Frank always was a snappy dresser. When he arrived home in Rosenberg he was a handsome man and did not lose any time to claim his sweetheart, Frances Nemec.

During the war years, Frances Nemec and I became very close friends, especially while Frank was overseas.

RICHTER, a former resident of Floresville, who passed away at 6:20 p.m. Saturday, July 16, 1983 in the Normandy Terrace Rest Home in San Antonio, Texas at the age of 74 years, 10 months and 9 days.

Monday, July 18 in the Vinyard Funeral Home Chapel in Floresville.

Funeral services were held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 19 in the Vinyard Funeral Home Chapel followed by a mass at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Floresville, with Father Jeremiah Murphy officiating. Interment was in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.

Pallbearers were John W. Chunda, Jeffery Kiolbassa, Michael Zidek, Karel Zidek, Emil Juranek and Mick Hudek.

Brother Richter was born September 7, 1908 in Floresville (Wilson County), Texas, the son of Chris and Agnes Richter. He married Miss Hattie Chunda 24 November 1931 in Loire. She preceded him in death 27 May 1971.

He did farming all his life in Floresville, except the last 10 years.

Brother Vecera moved to Burleson in September 1974 where he was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church.

Funeral services were held at St. Ann's with burial at Laurel Land Memorial Park.

Brother Jones was born in Bell County, the son of the late John L. and Minnie (Martin) Jones, early Bell County settlers. He lived his entire life in the Little RiverAcademy area. He served in the National Guard during World War I. He retired from Montgomery Ward and worked for a number of years for Temple Hardware.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Little River-Academy where he served as deacon.

1921, in West and had lived in the area most of his life. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He worked for Youngblood Inc. in Waco for 20 years, later working for the City of West for P12 years.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 54 since 15 March 1946, a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4819, both in West.

He also was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Bessie Tobola of Waco; a son, Joe F. Tobola, Jr. of Waco; a daughter, Cindy Klepper of Waco; a brother, Ernest Tobola of West, 2 sisters, Mrs. Frances Moore and Mrs. Mary Rejcek, both of Waco; and 3 grandchildren.
