Those in the Class of '83 who financed their college educations with federal student loans soon must begin repaying those loans. But there is a way to cut the monthly payment.

Ordinarily, repayment of government-backed student loans starts six months after you leave school, and the loans must be paid off within 10 years.

But under a plan called Options, offered by the federally chartered Student Loan Marketing Association — or Sallie Mae, as it is called — loans can be extended to as long as 20 years, slicing monthly payments by as much as 50 percent.

Kinds of loans. Only three kinds of federal student aid are eligible for the Options program: Guaranteed Student Loans and Federally Insured Student Loans, which are made by financial institutions, and National Direct Student Loans, which are offered by colleges. Any other kinds of student loans or regular consumer loans do not meet the test.

Eligibility. To qualify for this program, you must: Owe one or more lenders more than $7,500, owe two or more lenders more than $5,000 or owe a lending institution and a college more than $5,000.

How it works. Once you're accepted in the program, Sallie Mae pays off all of your existing student loans and creates one new loan. If you choose, you can take up to 20 years to repay the Sallie Mae loan, thus cutting the size of the monthly payment. You'll pay interest on the loan for the entire period. But the rate is a low 7 percent at least until November 1 — and interest is tax-deductible.

Salaried employees are getting increases averaging 6.8 percent this year, according to a survey by Sibson & Company, a compensation consulting firm based in Princeton, N.J. That amounts to a "real" earnings gain of 3.3 percent, when adjusted for inflation.

Waxing your car. The finishes on new cars are more durable today than they used to be, but they still need some care, says the Automotive Information Council. Its recommendation: Wax most cars at least twice a year and more frequently if the car is exposed to salt air or road salt, driven or parked in an industrial area or on dirt roads, or parked outside. If water doesn't bead up on a car's surface after a rain, the finish is in need of waxing.

The approach of football season means thousands will be hurt on the playing field, with many suffering serious head and neck injuries. Many of these injuries could be prevented if players, coaches and officials would do their parts, says the National Safety.

Council. Players should be sure to exercise their neck and head muscles, coaches should teach proper blocking and tackling procedures, and officials should strictly enforce rules against spearing with headgear. In addition, competent first aid should be available at all times. *** Blocking heart attacks. Taking a single aspirin each day can reduce the risk of a heart attack for people suffering from unstable angina — the severe chest pains that precede heart attacks — according to a report in the "New England Journal of Medicine."

When 625 angina patients at 12 Veterans Administration hospitals around the country were given aspirin daily for 12 weeks, they suffered just under half as many heart attacks as a group that took no aspirin. Alka-Seltzer was used in the test, since unbuffered aspirin sometimes causes gastrointestinal problems. *** If you get behind in mortgage payments, act quickly to avoid losing your home, urges the Department of Housing and Urban Development. To learn what must be done to stay out of trouble, get a free copy of the HUD pamphlet, "Avoiding Mortgage Default." Send your name and address on a postcard to the Consumer Information Center, Department 596L, Pueblo, Colo. 81009. *** Working women's rights. Whether a woman is looking for a job, settled into one, or retired, she may be able to use the updated version of the 54-page booklet, "A Working Woman's Guide to Her Job Rights," from the Women's Bureau of the Labor Department. 81009. *** Surviving spouses of veterans can get a certificate of preference in consideration of civil-service jobs from any regional office of the Veterans Administration, the agency says.

Such certificates can be presented to federal personnel offices for use in determining the applicants' eligibility for employment. ** Lap-size computers. Don't be surprised if you are asked not to use your new lap-size portable computer on an airliner. Some scientists, reports "Infoworld," a weekly computer-industry publication, believe the machines give off enough radiation to foul up the onboard computers that help control modern jetliner& At least one major airline, Eastern, already has decided not to allow use of portable computers on its flights. Some commuter airliners have adopted the same policy. *** Infant swimming lessons. Parents who are teaching their infants to swim should make sure baby doesn't swallow too much water, urges a report in "Pediatrics," the journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Even though the infant may not show any symptoms while in the pool, it can develop water intoxication and seizures. The report advises parents to avoid swimming programs that encourage submerging infants in water and to stop any lesson if the child swallows large amounts of water.

From the Vice President's Office 1983-84 SPJST Scholarship Winners Announced The SPJST is extremely proud of the following members who have been awarded a college scholarship leading to a four-year degree.

Checks have been sent to the presidents of the lodges of these announced recipients.

There are 2 groups of winners.

Freshmen who were awarded $1000 scholarships and undergraduates who were awarded $500 scholarships. The Supreme Lodge will award all categories $500 scholarships in 1984-85.

University of Mary Hardin-Baylor President Bobby Parker was chairman of the selection committee.

Dr. Parker complimented all applicants on their scholastic ability and said the selection process was extremely competitive and all entrants should feel proud of their achievements.

Additional winners who have been personally notified will be announced by the Supreme Lodge in the Vestnik upon receipt of photo/ biographical sketches and proof of enrollment. At that time scholarship checks will be forwarded to the applicable winner's lodge.

All those (whether a previous recipient or not) are eligible to apply again for the 1984-85 school year Applications will be printed on the back page of the Vestnik.

Fraternal Affairs Myths/Facts About Abuse In The Family

So that everyone may gain a better understanding of abuse in the family, listed below are four familiar myths followed by the facts concerning abuse: Myth: Motherly and fatherly love are instinctual.

Fact: In the majority of cases, parents who were not properly mothered in infancy are incapable of adequately parenting. If bonding doesn't happen, parent may have to "learn" to care for the child.

Myth: A battered child must deserve what it gets.

Fact: Usually a very minor disagreement or action triggers the violent action of the parent. The child is the unwilling target for the parents' rage.

The abused child is often picked as the target of abuse for one of the following reasons: *resembles a spouse who deserted the family *reminds parent of him/her self as a child *reminds parent of a cruel mother or father *is physically unattractive, sickly, scrawny, hyperactive *is an "unplanned" child Myth: Abuse happens mostly in families in poverty areas.

Fact: Abuse occurs everywhere; in suburbs, rural areas, inner city neighborhoods and among families of all backgrounds, religions, income.

Myth: The abuser must be insane to do these things.

Facts: Most abusers are 'normal' people. Relatively few are seriously mentally ill, but they do have hidden emotional disturbances. Most abusers want to be helped, and they can be.

There can be a strong love between abuser and child.

We will have a "Quilt and Spread Show". These will be judged, and first, second and third place ribbons will be given in each category. Bring your favorite quilt and spread. Mary Schenburn is chairman of this committee; and I will name her assistants in my next letter.

We have asked Rosalee Kostom to have a Czechoslovakia booth and display crystal, dolls and other articles from Czechoslovakia.

Another interesting display will be of Czech costumes by Frances Olexa, who will be glad to answer questions about the costumes.

A program, starting at 2 p.m., will include a comical wedding by adults, skits, dances and musical numbers.

Anyone, regardless of age, can participate in this program.

I am asking the presidents of the lodges to serve on an Executive Committee. Each of you have received a letter about this special day, and I hope you will have it read and discussed in your meeting.

28 East Bernard Meeting

Lodge 25 held its regular monthly meeting Thursday, August 11, 1983 at 3 p.m. The meeting was called to order by 1st Vice President Winnie Whitfill.

Sergeant-at-Arms Garry Mizell led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Among correspondence read, there was a letter from the Supreme Lodge (Mrs. Eugene Hrncir) asking for permission to present a "Child Abuse Program" at our lodge for the Ennis-Dallas area lodges.

Lodge 40 To Host • • District VI Meeting Dear Vestnik Readers and Friends: I missed you very much last meeting, but I was on vacation; so glad to be back.

The regular monthly meeting of the El Campo-Hillje Lodge 40 was held Wednesday, August 24, 1983 at 7:30 p.m.

President James Kulcak called the meeting to order. Following the Pledge of Allegiance we honored our dearly departed with a minute of silent prayer.

Due to a work conflict our Secretary Linda Rubesh was unable to attend the meeting and Sister Laverne Bacak sat in for her by reading the minutes of the last meeting. They were approved as read.

A nice thank you was received from Sister Patsy Reck during her time of illness.

President Kulcak explained the new basic rules and regulations regarding. bingo. They appear to be very complicated. Material was received from the Texas Bingo Operators Association lobbying to make the rules easier to read. Membership was $100, but feeling was we are unable to join at this time due to finances.

Treasurer Leona Macha gave a report on the checking accountant bills paid. Special account with bingo proceeds added looked impressive; then she paid some bills. After expenses for lot spraying, airconditioning repair, bingo expenses, supplies for bar and bookkeeping supplies and plumbing expenses we are back to square one. The bar account is in good shape.

The question about the $1.80 membership dues was explained.

We heard a great report on the bingo proceeds and we are required to set up a special account for it.

Treasurer Leona Macha has to start the ball rolling. Also, the CD is soon coming into maturity. Notes and expenses are to be paid out and we will go into the money market.

Mr. Marek will check out the gravel situation and potholes are to be filled.

New members are the Tuggle family, thanks to Salesperson Cynthia Goerig.

Members are reminded that the big District VI meeting will be held October 23rd at 1 p.m. here in Hillje.

A vote was taken at the last meeting and all members are to bring refreshments. Ganado will join us in hosting the meeting.

Beginning at the next monthly meeting door prizes are to be given away. Many suggestions were given for types of prizes. The suggestions were great! So come out and bring the family, you will have more chances to win.

November 21st, our Monday Bingo night, a turkey will be given as a prize; sounds like someone will have a great Thanksgiving!

A special thanks is to be sent to Miori Svatek Distributing for the two beer sign and clocks for over the bar and kitchen. They are nice additions to our hail. They also rotated our bar stock. Many thanks!

The "Little Fishermen" polka band played at Lodge 88 for the first time and entertained the guests with waltzes, leandlers and mostly polkas; the dress was casual. In charge of the dance was lovely Juan-. ita Simmons with Orvile, her husband, at her side; Vic Gallo served in the box office and his wife, Joy, with Jackie Stephens smilingly greeting the guests. Ken Stephens with Orvile Simmons directed the guests to their tables.

Two wedding anniversaries took place at this dance: two tables were occupied by celebrants of 20 years of happy life, namely, Mr. and Mrs. Bill and Ellen Wills and their guests; and another group of 20 guests celebrated the 30th wedding anniversary of Berry and Bernadine Syzdek. Two birthdays were included in this group, namely, Danila and Betty, with birthdays Saturday, August 27, 1983.

At another table a birthday was celebrated by Emil (Sly) Slanina; his friends surrounded him to wish him well and many more. To all these celebrants, Saturday the 27th, all kinds of goodies were served and the specially decorated cakes were also on the spot. Congratulations and best wishes to all these celebrants of August 27th.

Tim and Rosalee Kostom, after four weeks of touring Europe, arrived home Friday. We are glad to have you with us, again; welcome home!

My son, Henry Olexa, and his spouse, Della, winged to Las Vegas for a few days and accidently met Naomi Spencer; she and Helen Schnell also were at the Sands Hotel on the strip. They chatted with Naomi but did not get a chance to see. Helen at all; that's Las Vegas, you just get lost among the onearmed bandits. Henry and Della enjoyed the few days without any results.

Mickey Rice flew to San Francisco August 16 to attend a press release luncheon at Stanford University in Palo Alto the 17th, which was in connection with the foundation she is associated with. She returned to Houston at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 17 just before storm Alicia got vicious. Mickey was so exhausted, from all the activities in San Francisco, that she slept through

the storm and woke up next morning at 10:30. That is what I call a sound sleeper!

Again, we bow our heads in sorrow in the loss of our Brother John W. (Bill) Wallace who passed away August 23, 1983 at the age of 69 after a lengthy illness in Heights Hospital. Funeral services were held Thursday, August 25 at 1:30 p.m. in the Heights Funeral Chapel with Rev. Charles B. Fraser officiating.

He was laid to rest in Brookside Cemetery. Survivors are wife, Wilma J. Wallace; sister, Faydeli Brenner; brother, Jim F. Wallace; nieces and newphews. We express our sincere heartfelt sympathy to the surviving family.

Congratulations to our song bird, Helen Hegwood, for your spendid performance at the Astrodome Saturday, August 27 at 7:30 p.m. to an audience of 43,000 on cable, but not on television. Bob and Margaret Allbritton saw Helen and heard her sing and they were all excited when they came to the Blue Room telling us about it. Congratulations, Helen!

Circle Lodge No. 92, Ft. Worth Ladies

Dear Members and Friends: The meeting came to order with Mary Powers, president, presiding.

Frances Grizzard read the minutes which were approved and Hermina Cihacek gave the treasurer's report.

Esta Belle Hubenak reported on new Bingo cards and Rose Jaworski made a motion to buy two hundred cards with the cage. Motion carried.

Flora Koci made a motion to give $60 to Lodge No. 92 to help pay for a new popcorn machine which was bought by the lodge.

Corina Tesar became our new member. We are happy she decided to join us.

Bennie Hundle donated the door prize which was won by Ida Mayer.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Mary Hale and Bunny Tesar.

Lillie and Mac McMillen have returned from a 4,000 mile trip across the states. They went to-Lincoln, Nebraska, to the Polka Festival then to Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania to visit Anne Polk who said to tell everyone in Ft. Worth, "Hi!" Then on to Alexandria, Virginia to visit their granddaughter and greatgrandbaby and last to Charlotte, South Carolina to visit their grandson who is in the Navy.

Congratulations to Julia and Ernie Duesar on winning a paid plane trip to Bangor, Maine, where they will visit friends.

We have had several of our members in various hospitals this month.

They are: Millie Waters who was in H.E.B., Mary Palachek in Ft. Worth Osteopathic, Mrs. Charlie Kratky in All Saints and Kathryne Swinford, Esta Bell Hubenak's daughter, in Houston Hospital. Esta Belle flew down to Houston to visit her over the weekend. We were happy to hear they have all returned home and are doing fine.

We sincerely hope Frances Jaworski will soon be able to return home from St. Joseph's Hospital.

We wish to extend our congratulations to Roger Albert Kubala and Susan Marie White on their recent wedding in Christ King Church in Dallas with Msgr. William Botik officiating.

Mr. and Mrs. Bob D. White are parents of the bride and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Kubala are parents of the bridegroom. The happy couple will make their home in Azle, Texas.

Floresville Lodge Prepares For Peanut Festival Lodge 107 was called to order by President Bayer August 14 at 6 p.m.

The Pledge was led by Trey Bielefeld.

Frances Lindholm and Mike Baumann were reported on the sick list.

At this time the meeting was turned over to District VII Director Thelma Hrncir. After a brief message to the members she introduced Donna Garrett. Donna is with Children's Protective Services and serves Bexar and several surrounding counties. Bill Norman is Wilson County's service officer. He is stationed in the DHR offices in Floresville. A very interesting film was shown by Ms. Garrett followed by a question-and-answer session.

Lodge 107 was given some points to ponder and decide how the lodge wanted to get involved.

New and additional insurance policies were issued to Lee Wayne Talomantey, Leigh Denise Talomantey, Jonathan Svoboda, Jason Svoboda, Janelle Svoboda, Melvin Lynnette Sralla, Lenard Sralla, Ray Joseph Altman and Pauline Bayer, John Bayer, Roxanne Bayer and Wendy Bayer. Laurie Vaclavik was issued a paid-up certificate.

Correspondence from Mike Baumann and the Walter Richter family was read.

Jeffry A. Sralla was notified that he was a tentative recipient of a $500 SPJST Scholarship upon his return to school.

Youth leader report stated brief reports of camp and District YAD. Amanda Burleson is our District VII Queen and will represent Lodge 107 at the Peanut Festival Coronation and Parade. Clubbers, Jackie Burleson, Rusty Condra and Tommy McDermett will attend State YAD. Liz Bielefeld will serve on the Tabulating Committee.

Members please note that the October meeting will be held the first Sunday, October 2nd. This change was made so that the youth club could work with packaging peanuts and also we will start making peanut brittle this Sunday; depending on how much is accomplished, we will work several nights of the week. We need to make more than we made in the past. The cooperation of the entire lodge is needed because this is the only project the lodge has for the year.

Annual Dinner For Lodge 135, Ennis SPJST Lodge No. 135 in Ennis will be hosting their annual dinner Sunday, September 11th at 12:30 p.m. at the Sokol Gymnastic Center.

154 Ft. Worth Meeting Lodge

Dear Members and Friends: Hurricana Alicia gave us a good rain, but the heat continues.

We are happy to report Sister Jeanie Mason is home after a 2-week hospital stay. She is now recuperating and, hope it won't be long before she is back in circulation. Everyone misses her.

We want to wish a speedy recovery to Brother Charles Prill who had to have foot surgery, after the excitement of bowling a perfect game: 300!

Also, a speedy recovery to Sister Elizabeth Dodson who was in the hospital, and Brother Billy Sanders. We are glad he is now doing OK. We extend our sincere sympathy to Sister Gertrude Dawson and family on the loss of her husband, and to Sisters Cassie Bartlett and Linda Waldon and family on the loss of their father Amon W. Stalcup.

We congratulate Brother David and Sister Julie Milan on the arrival of a son, William Jordon August 25th, weighing 7 lbs., 7 ozs. This is their first child and the proud grandparents are Brother Emil and Sister Sally Milan.

Sister Mary Hale just had her 82nd birthday and Sister Rose Svojger her 85th. May you have many, more!

Several of our members attended the 5th anniversary celebration of Lodge 180 in Burleson yesterday. The food was delicious, Brother Sid Pokladnik and his Czech Concert Orchestra played beautifully. We also enjoyed Mrs. Tankersley's accordion music during dinner.

Congratulations to the youngsters from Lodge 84 in Dallas dancing the Beseda so well and the group from West were fantastic. A beautiful group!

Lodge 180: We wish you many more years of success.

Vera Matustikova really enjoyed the day. We will all hate to see her leave Wednesday.

Brothers Rome and Jerry Milan and Sister Henrietta arrived from their few days in Los Angeles, California, where they were working 4i with

the USGF. They got to stop by Lodge 180 for a short while to say "hello".

Congratulations to 'Roger and Susan Kubala who were wed Saturday; sorry I had to miss the wedding, but had to be at the hall. I heard how beautiful everything was and all the deliciots food. We hope you have a long and happy life together.

Friday, September 16th, a super dance band, Al Pierson and Big Band USA for the first time in Pasadena.

Saturday, September 17 we will have the ever-popular, Lee Roy Matocha playing your favorite old time and modern music, so make plans to attend.

A free social for members is scheduled for the last Sunday in October, (the 30th) and we will be celebrating an anniversary soon, more information later.

We are fortunate to book the Original River Road Boys for Friday, September 23rd. This is the only appearance at our ballroom this year by a very good country/western band so make plans to dance and listen to some good music.

Dear Members and Friends: Hello again to all of you from us in Pasadena!

Harvestime is here but not much to be gathered, at least in our area near the Gulf Coast, because the very dangerous hurricane Alicia has damaged and scattered crops and debris along its wide path. There are still much debris to be cleared up after the furious winds that accompanied Alicia. Telephone and electricity also has to be restored in some areas. Many beautiful trees, fruit trees, pecan trees, shrubbery and fences were destroyed.

Once more you are reminded of our September 11th big family-type social beginning at 1 p.m. with a barbecue beef brisket with trimmings dinner to be served until 3 p.m. for $5 per person which also will enable you to dance from 3 to 7 p.m. to the Texas Brew country/western music; otherwise it will cost you $4 per person for the dance. An invitation is extended to everyone, so please start making plans to bring a earful to Lodge 172 in Pasadena.

Our sympathy is expressed to the surviving family of Mrs. Mary Ann Zwahr who passed away recently.

Also my wife, Esther Mikeska's uncle, Johnnie Pullin, 90 years old of Nixson, who died and was buried at 10:30 Friday in Nixson cemetery. Mrs. Kasik, an old-time neighbor of ours, passed away, too, and was buried in a Wallis cemetery.

Among the sick still listed include Sophie Baker, Sylvia Hugo, Victor Peter, John Hausler, Renea Ordener and Mary Holton.

John Hausler was among us during the August 27th dance enjoying the variety music to the Heart of Texas Czechs from Round Rock, Texas.

Regardless of the countless damage done by Alicia, we can brag on the crowds that attended our dance.

Brother Dan and Sister Margie Berry were hosts at the door. Bartenders Julius Zella, Jerry Dressier and Louis Hrabina were busy in the refreshments area while Sister Leona Zella had the whole kitchen to herself; later she was joined by Sister Margie Hrabina who assisted her during the rush hours. Thanks to everyone who helped.

President Albert and Sister Tommie Risinger were out-of-town, perhaps gathering debris at their summer home near Austin.

September 3rd we had Neal Hart playing country/western music to everyone's delight. He has played at our ballroom many times and each time he returns he always draws a good crowd.

Attention District II Youth Leaders The Temple Dragway will again host the annual car racing activities Sunday, September 11th to approximately 150 race car drivers from the Southwest.

Gates will open at 8 a.m. and races start at 12:45 p.m.

Youth Club members, chaperoned by their youth leader, will be admitted free; only adults will pay admission.

There will be four Texas top alcohol-firing race cars running four times. This spectacular is alivays open to our SPJST members as well as the general public.

Urbis Concert To Have Czech Music Richard Urbis, concert pianist, will give a concert at First United Methodist Church September 25 at 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon at Three Rivers, Texas. The public is invited.

There will be selections by Bach, Beethoven, Chopin and Lizst plus popular, jazz and country music along with Urbis compositions. Also featured will be "Na Svate Hore" by Dvorak, "Na Brehu Morskem" by Smetana, and an American work by Ned Rorem. Urbis celebrates his heritage as an American of Czech ancestry with these selections. A list of concert dates for November will be listed in a later issue. ***

He also earned Department of Philosophy honors, an award bestowed on those who complete a program of under­ graduate and graduate courses with top marks. He is a member of the Zeta Psi Fraternity.

Bickle · was granted a fellowship stipend from the Regents of the Uni­ versity and received a teaching ap­ pointment at .the University's Irvine campus, located about 60 miles south of Los Angeles. There, he plans to pursue his studies in Phil­ osophy leading to the PhD degree and looks forward to a career in teaching at the college level.

LODGE 179 FIELD TRIP TO TEXAS SAFARI It took three carloads to take the youth members of Warrenton lodge to Clifton for a field trip through Texas Safari July 28, 1983. Feeding all the animals was a real treat because they came to put their heads into your car; at observation point, we discovered they could be hand fed.

We had a picnic for dinner and then everyone enjoyed the petting zoos, pony rides, camel rides, stage­ coach rides and the Baboon show.

We tried the paddle boats and then after souvenir shopping did some real shopping at Wall Discount.

We made a quick excursion · around Waco and then spent some extra time at Lott at the Fair.

Lodge_47Youth Club met Sunday, August 7, 1983 at 2 p.m. with Shana Patterson, president, calling the meeting to order. Daryll Kortis led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and the Club Motto. Visitors were Clay Marshall of Keller, Texas and Mary Tepera. We had 9 members and 2 guests present. Birthdays for the month of August were James Paul Billeck who was 7 on the day of our meeting. LODGE 30 HAD MANY STATE YAD ENTRANTS Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club will hold its monthly meeting September 4th at 2:30 p.m. at the Taiton Community Center.

The contest for next month is to draw a picture about school.

Mrs. Bobby Roye and Mrs. Louis Milder will serve refreshments next month.

At State YAD we had many entries and the winners in crafts from Lodge 30 were: Lenise Kasper (2nd place in 6-9), Rebecca Sellers (3rd in 10-12), Jean Dorotik (3rd in 13-14), and Michelle Srubar (1st and 3rd also in 13-14).

In Group Talent Marcy Dorotik, Kristi Korenek, Jennifer Dluhos, and Stephanie Roye won 2nd in the 6-12 category.

YOUTH CLUB NEWS Dear Members, Our youth club went to Camp Val Verde August 8th through 11th. We went swimming both day and night and walked to the river where we went canoeing.

It rained on our cookout. The electricity went out for a long time.

We walked to the two-story cabin which was scary, our cabin got raided once.

While at camp we also went horseback riding up and down steep hills.

While we were there, the horses got loose and went everywhere, they even came to our cabin and got in the trash can.

Tuesday morning several of us were table hoppers at breakfasttime.

Wednesday we had a big dance before we left for home and everyone liked it.

On the last day of camp we had to cleanup; Diane swept and I mopped.

STATE WINNERS Dear Readers, State YAD began with registration at 11:30 a.m. then later lunch was served and we began preparing for our Beseda. There were 3 Junior groups and 4 Senior groups. New Tabor placed second in Junior Beseda group.

Next, Individual Talent, which New Tabor walked away with 5 first places; two of the 5 belong to Nicole Alford, then Group Talent of New Tabor placed 3rd.

Everyone from other lodges were very talented which made competition tough.

It was fun and I am looking forward to seeing all of you next year.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge 79, Corpus Christi, Texas in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our most sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge sister LOUISE P. SLADEK, age 90, who passed away 21 March 1983 in a local nursing home. She was a homemaker and lived in Corpus Christi since 1928.

Sister Repka was born 17 November 1889, the daughter of John and Anna (Danck) Stasny. She was married to Frank Repka 10 January 1910.

She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church of Hempstead.

Funeral services were held 2 April 1983 at the McWilliams Funeral Home and she was laid to rest in the Hempstead Cemetery.

Sister Repka is survived by one daughter, Mathilda Hitt.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Anna Stasny; and her husband, Frank Repka.

Pallbearers were Victor Stasny, Alvin Stasny, Reisel Stasny, Roland Stasny, Aretas Krienke and Delphine Kasper.

He was a member of the New Tabor Brethren Church and the SPJST Lodge No. 17 in New Tabor.

He was married to Albina Skrabanek June 23, 1942 in the Caldwell Brethren Church parsonage by the Rev. Henry E. Beseda, Sr. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, April 1, in the New Tabor Brethren Church with the pastor Rev. Albert Michalik and Rev. Henry E. Beseda, pastor of the Snook Brethren Church, officiating.

Interment was in the New Tabor Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Albina Urban of Caldwell; and one sister, Mrs. Delphine West of Houston.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Henry, Arnold and Fred Urban.

Pallbeares were his nephews, Edward Skrabanek, Paul M. Skrabanek, James D. Skrabanek, Melvin H. Skrabanek, Clarence A. West, Robert Ashley, Robert J. Urban and Henry J. Skrabanek.

JOE A. KOCUREK, 85, a resident of Pierce, Texas, died at his home 19 April 1983 after a short illness.

Brother Kucurek was born in Ellinger, Texas 14 May 1897 to the late Frank and Anna (Dirba) Kocurek. He was a retired farmer.

Brother Kocurek was a member of the SPJST, Catholic Workmen and St. Philip's Catholic Church.

A rosary was recited by Rev. James Brunner 19 April at the Triska Chapel at 7 p.m.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. April 20 at St. Philip's Catholic Church with Rev. James Brunner and Msgr. J. A. Petru officiating.

Interment was at Holy Cross Cemetery under the direction of Triska Funeral Home of El Campo.

Brother Kocurek is survived by his wife, Anna Kocurek of Pierce; one son, Joseph of Pierce; three daughters, Mrs. Anton (Rita) Zdansky of Lyford, Mrs. Alvin (Anna) Bartos and Mrs. Bennie (Vlasta) Bartos, all of El Campo; four sisters, Mrs. Betty Goodlett of Brenham, Mrs. Annie Regmund of Corpus Christi, Mrs. Agnes Miller of Robstown, Mrs. Amelia Manngen of Corpus Christi; three brothers, Louis of Bay City, Frank and Willie of Corpus Christi; 13 Grandchildren; 2 stepbrothers and one stepsister.

MRS. CHARLES MASSEY (JO ELLEN MIKA) of San Angelo, who passed away May 26, 1983 at John Sealy Hospital in Galveston at the age of 29.

Mrs. Massey was born April 19, 1954 and lived in Miles until her marriage to Charles Massey in 1973.

She was a 1972 graduate of Miles High School and a member of the Mereta Baptist Church. In 1970 she was a member of the Lodge 160 Youth Club.

Services were held May 29 at Johnson's Funeral Chapel with the Rev. N. T. Gault and the Rev. Durward Rutland officiating. Burial followed in Miles Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Charles Massey; two daughters, Jana Lee and Amanda Jo of the home; her parents, Bernie and Lucy Mika of Miles; two sisters, Mrs. Bruce (Janice) Smith and Lee Ann Mika of Miles; and her grandmother, Mrs. Betty Mika, of San Angelo.

He was a retired farmer and had reached the age of 74 years, 5 months and 10 days.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 29 at the Praha Catholic Church, with interment in the church cemetery. Officiating were Rev. Joseph Hamala of Cistern and Rev. Benton Thurmond of St. John's Church. SchwenkeBaumgarten Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Rosary was recited Saturday, May 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the SchwenkeBaumgarten Funeral Chapel in Schulenberg.

Lodge Brother Julius Petter was born 17 December 1908 in Fayette County, Texas, the son of Frank and Emalia Petter. He and Anita Staha were united in marriage at the Moravia Catholic Church 14 October 1930.

Brother Petter was a lifelong resident of the Schulenburg area, a member of the Praha Catholic Church and a faithful SPJST member of Lodge Velehrad No. 19 for over 50 years. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Irene and Erwin Mendel of St. John; two sisters, Mrs. Charles (Annie) Horelica of Needville, and Mrs. Louis (Evelyn) Krolczyk of Houston; seven brothers, Henry Petter of Schulenburg, Eugene Petter of Schulenburg, Anton Petter of El

Campo, Jerry Petter of West Columbia, Alfonse Petter of Houston, Alfred Petter of Houston and Albert Petter of Pearland; three grandchildren, Mrs. Daniel (Loretta) Henneke of Houston, Gary Mendel of Schulenburg and Gregory Mendel also of Schulenburg; and one greatgrandchild, Scott Henneke of Houston.

We, the Resolution Committee of Bryan-College Station Lodge 189, on behalf of the entire membership, wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the entire family of our departed brother, JERRY WESLEY VYTOPIL who passed away Wednesday, June 8, 1983, at the age of 61 years, 10 days, while a patient in Humana Hospital, Bryan, Texas. He had been in ill health for about two years.

Brother Vyptopil was born in Wheelock, Robertson County, May 29, 1922, the son of Frank and Albina (Cech) Vytopil. He was married to Miss Dorothy Lillie Matejka November 9, 1946 at the Cooks Point Brethren Church. Brother Vyptopil was a veteran who served his country faithfully during World War II. He served in Northern France and the Rhine of Germany as a member of Company "K," 415 Infantry Regiment of the 104th ("Timberwolf") Infantry Division.

There he spent five months in combat and was cited for bravery and leadership as he led his squad through heavy enemy fire, receiving the Bronze Star Medal for his efforts. He was severely wounded in fighting near Duren, Germany, and received the Purple Heart Medal.

His heroic efforts remind us that the freedoms we enjoy here in America today, and often take for granted, were purchased in our behalf through a tremendous price of suffering, pain, and bloodshed on the part of our soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen. He was employed with International Furniture Company (The Schnadig Corporation) for 37 years, where he became supervisor and held that position until failing health forced his retirement two years ago.

Brother Vytopil was a member of Hope Evangelical Free Church, American Legion Post No. 159, Veteran of Foreign Wars Post No. 4962, and Bryan-College Station SPJST Lodge 189, where he served in a number of different offices.

Funeral services were held June 10, 1983 at 2:00 p.m. at Hillier Funeral Home with the Rev. John Gant of Hope Evangelical Free Church officiating. Burial was at Restever Memorial Park.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 17, Novy Tabor, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother OTTO PRIEVE, JR., who died June 25, 1983, in Veterans Hospital in Temple, Texas following a lengthy illness.

Brother Prieve was born June 1, 1916 at Cooks Point, the son of Otto Prieve, Sr. and Mary (Lehde) Prieve.

He was a lifetime resident of Burleson County. He was retired, after working for Texas A&M University in the Mess Hall and was with the State Highway Department for over 20 years. He was recognized for 20 years of meritorious service with a certificate of appreciation with the Texas Highway Department upon his retirement.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army with Company E, 143rd Infantry. He served in Infantry Regiment overseas in the European theater of operations. He was wounded in action prior to capture at Salerno, Italy. He received the Purple Heart medal, combat infantryman's badge, European campaign medal with one.

Bronze Star, and the American defense service medal. He was captured by German forces in 1943, held prisoner of war and liberated

by British forces in 1945. He was honorably discharged September 29, 1945.

He was married to Adele Helms Montague March 19, 1960 in Burleson County. He was a member of the Lutheran Church in Caldwell, the SPJST Lodge No. 17 of New Tabor and the Sons of Hermann Lodge of Deanville.

Funeral services were held June 28th in Phillips-Luckey Chapel in Caldwell with the Rev. William Hill, pastor of the Elizabeth Lutheran Church officiating. Interment was in the Elizabeth Lutheran Church Cemetery.

A prayer service was held June 27th, led by Rev. Hill in the Chapel of Phillips-Luckey.

Survivors include his wife, Adele Prieve of Caldwell; one son, Larry Prieve of Milano; two step-sons, Billy Montague and Edward Montague, both of Kurten; one daughter, Linda Prieve of Caldwell; nine grandchildren; one brother, Joe Prieve of College Station; and four sisters, Mrs.Ella Loehr, Mrs. Mary Maresh, Mrs. Irene Schumacher and -Mrs. Ruby Vavra, all of Caldwell.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 18 at 11 a.m. at the Temple Brethren Church with Rev. Mark Labaj and Chaplain James Parks officiating. Burial was in Bellwood Memorial Park. Sheffield Funeral Home of Temple was in charge of arrangements.

Brother Kamas was born in Bell County and .was the son of the late Josef and Anna (Hruska) Kamas. He lived in the Seaton area before moving to the Hortick Bluff Community Temple.

Brother Karnas was a lifelong farmer, an elder in Temple Brethren Church, and a member of the SPJST lodge.

Survivors include his son, James W. Kamas of Austin; two daughters, Mrs. Martha Ann Daniel of Temple and Mrs. Margie Bennett of Hortick Bluff Community Temple, and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Albina Teresa 4 June 1983 and four sisters, Mrs. Frances Mikulas, Mrs. Emilie Chupik, Mrs. Rosa Hunka and Mrs. Albina Kostohryz.

The family requested that memorials be made to Girling Health Care or to the Temple Brethren Church Memorial Fund.

The Rev. Donald R. Ruppert solemnized the couple's wedding pledges.

Parents of the couple are Mr. & Mrs. Robert C. Moreau of Inez and Mr. & Mrs. James E. Koop, Sr. of Edna.

The celebration, which was given to Mr. and Mrs. Prasatik by their children and grandchildren, was held from 1:30 to 6:30.

The Prasatiks_ received a written blessing from Pope John Paul II and a letter of congratulations from President Ronald Reagan. They also received many gifts from their family and friends.

Refreshments were served throughout the afternoon, including

a beautiful wedding cake, groom's cake and various other snacks.

The "Fabulous Six" band p4ayed a combination of country and polka music until 4:00 for those who wanted to dance. The grand march started off the dancing. A delicious catered meal of barbecue was served at 4:30.

The celebration was wonderful and was enjoyed by everyone. We all wish Mr. and Mrs. Prasatik many more happy years together.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Adamek of Granger.

Her grandparents are Mrs. Beulah Nelson of Caddo Mills and John Adamek of Taylor.

The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Jezisek Jr. of Granger. His grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Tim Havelka of Jarrell.

Among the Junior receptionists were Tina Wilhelm and Melissa Blaha. They were attired in formal dresses of lavender and white floral print and white hats trimmed with lavender ribbons.

Church decorations consisted of aisle candelabras accented with white satin bows and English ivy.

The family pews were marked with satin bows, wisteria and English ivy.

At each side of the altar were a pair of standing brass candlelabra.s with greenery and satin bows. An arrangement of white gladioli and white and lavender roses centered with a unity, candle in a brass container was placed on the altar.

Usher duties were performed by Dennis Repa, Donald Repa, Bruce Pavel and Harold Kadera, all of Granger.

Ringbearer was Michael Wentrcek. Jeffery Jarosek and Clinton Jarosek served as candlelighters.

The bride adorned in a white chiffon and bridal satin attire, entered with her parents. Her fitted bodice had a sheer yoke of English net trimmed with silk schiffli embroidery and Venise lace highlighted with sequins and pearls.

Beaded Venise lace formed the high collar.

A deep flounce of Wedgewood lace enhanced the V-portrait neckline and closed in the back with pearl buttons. The skirt of chiffon and satin flowed from a natural waistline to form a cathedral train detailed with schiffli embroidery and Venise lace appliques. The hemline was encircled with a deep flounce of Wedgewood lace.

The bride also wore a gold coin dukette on a chain around her neck, which was a gift of Czech heritage from her uncle in Vienna, Austria three years ago.

A derby hat trimmed in beaded lace with an attached veil of silk illusion accented with Venise lace appliques, completed the bride's formal attire.

The bride's bouquet, which was designed by Mary Henry, was- a cascade of white and lavender roses, stephanotis, orchids and greenery.

A dinner and dance reception was held at the SPJST Hall in Taylor.

Dance music was provided by Basic Country. The grand march was led

by Mr. and Mrs. Jessie Pospisil.

The hall was decorated with lavender and white crepe paper streamers, white and lavender bells with bows and ribbons. Tables were decorated with white hurricane

The attendants wore matching floor-length gowns of lavender crepe back satin designed with a sweetheart neckline and puffed sleeves. The natural waistline was accented with a cummerbund. They also wore a derby hat and carried a nosegay of white and lavender roses.

Misty Jezisek and Carol Jezisek, nieces of the bridegroom, and Allison Jarosek, were flower girls.

Their dresses were identical slipperlength of white organza over taffeta, trimmed with lavender ribbon. Each flower girl carried a basket of white and lavender roses. Their hats were white, trimmed with lavender ribbons.

The bridgesmaids' dresses were designed by the bride and Lillian Frerichs, and the flower girls' dresses were designed by the bride but made by Dollie Hajda.

Serving as best man was Dennis Pavel. Groomsmen consisted of Kenneth Jezisek, Robert Jezisek, Patrick Jezisek, brothers of the Mr. & Mrs. Johnny Kabela of groom, James Cervenka, Scott Victoria celebrated their 25th Krueger; Kenny Cervenka r David,- wedding anniversary July 2 with a

A graduate of Granger High School, the bride is employed at State Farm Insurance Company in Austin.

The bridegroom is also a graduate of Granger High School and he is employed at Repa Plumbing Company in Granger.

Upon returning from their honeymoon trip to Mexico, the newlyweds will be residing at 724 Fox Street in Granger.

Cotropia and Trampota Wed Miss Lisa Ann Cotropia became the bride of Mr. Jerry Daniel Trampota in a double ring ceremony Saturday, June 25, 1983, held in St. Mary's Catholic Church in College Station.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Catropia of Hearne, and the groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Trampota of Temple.

For her wedding, the bride donned a cathedral-length gown designed by the House of Bianchi.

The empire bodice, covered with reembroidered Alencon lace and seed pearls, featured a batteau neckline and cap sleeves. The skirt was sprinkled with handmade silk organza roses, she topped her ensemble with a flowing illusion veil gathered into a juliet cap.

The bride's accessories included a diamond pendant, a gift from the groom, and diamond earrings. She carried a cascading bouquet of white roses, stephanotis and lilies of the valley with ribbon streamers.

Miss Cotropia's matron of honor was Ms. Karrie A. Oertli of San Antonio, and her bridesmaid was Mrs. Rosanne Ely of Hearne, a cousin. The ladies dressed in floorlength gowns of pink silk organza, and each carried an American Beauty rose and baby's breath.

For the formal wedding of their son and daughter, Mrs. Cotropia wore a rose-colored evening gown, and Mrs. Trampota wore a blue crepe gown. The floor-length ensembles were accessorized with rose corsages.

Rev. A. A. Palermo, pastor of St. Mary's Church, officiated at the ceremony. The altar was decorated with two large arrangements of flowers and greenery, and music was, provided by Scott Fredericksen, violinist; Diane Steelman, pianist and organist; and Mrs. Karl Kapchinski, soloist. use of mechanical means to provide dramatic effect.

The Black Theatre in Prague, is an exciting combination of lighting techniques, sound and pantomime.

They are perfectly understandable in any language. The Laterna Magika (Magic Lantern) widely acclaimed during its presentation at Montreal's world fair, "Expo 67," provides a thrilling mixture of film and live action. Theater-goers might be surprised by the force of the spontaneous enthusiastic audience response - cheers or boos - of Czechoslovaks who take their theater experiences to heart.

The theater artists are not all found on the spectacular stages of Prague. Many small theaters across Czechoslovakia are run by young people with new ideas and new ways of putting them across. Nor though, are all the plays performed of native derivation.

CINEMA The film industry is another dynamic force in Czechoslovak culture. First recognized by the Western World in 1966, Czechoslovak films soared to popularity when the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences gave its coveted "Oscar" to director Jan Kadar and Elmer Klos for their `Shop on Main Street." Film goers and movie makers all over the world recognize such names as Milos Forman, Jiri Menzel and Jiri Nemec.

Puppetry is a theater art less popular. Jiri Trnka is one of the world's leading puppeteers, delighting, chiding, and enchanting audiences of all ages.

The people of Czechoslovakia reflect the often changing currents of their national history. In appearance, they bear resemblance to Germanic and Hungarian, as well as to Slavic ancestors: in music, literature, theater, and indeed in their daily customs, they show the influences of a varied cultural background. The Czechs number 10,500,000 and the Slovaks 4,200,000.

LITERATURE AND LANGUAGE Czech and Slovak are Slavik languages very close in nature and both can be understood by anyone who speaks one or the other.

Unfortunately, neither is wellknown in the Western World and the great body of Czechoslovak literature is, therefore, lost to us except through translation and only a few Czech and Slovak authors have been widely translated.

Unquestionably, the Czechoslovak writers best-known in English speaking countries are Franz Kafka (who wrote in German), Jaroslav Hasek, and Karel Capek.

Kafka was a brooding genius who created books of great, imaginative horror. Some of his works are Metamorphosis, The Trial, and The Castle.

Hasek was perhaps the author closest to understanding the popular Czechoslovak character. In his book, Good Soldier Schweik, still unfinished and unpublished at the time of his death in 1923, he gave the nation a picaresque folk hero who is still represented by hundreds of figurines and drawings in Prague shop windows.

Karel Capek, best known in the West for sophisticated, satiric works such as R.U.R. and War with the Newts, is revered in his own land as a writer of children's stories.

THEATER Czechoslovak theater belongs traditionally to the life of the people, and has always played a vital part, socially and politically, as well as culturally. It is not surprising, therefore, that today the country has 65 professional theaters with 98 permanent drama, opera, operetta and ballet companies, and a total of 14,000 employees. Because theaters are nationalized and subsidized by the government, admission is inexpensive.

The Czechoslovak theater is a world-recognized innovator of new techniques. Though repertoiNs are varied, including all classical and contemporary authors, the most outstap g achieaTmerkts,,

ART Czechoslovakia's best-loved painters have achieved but little fame away from home. Joseph Manes and Mikulas Ales and the portrait master, Max Svabinsky, are perhaps the most renowned.

But it is not in painting or sculpture, but in architecture that Czechoslovak arts excels. One of the most beautiful cities in the world is Prague, built on five hills on both banks of the Vltava (Moldau) River.

The face of the city was formed mainly during two periods of intense and inspired building activity: the Romanesque - Gothic (900 - 1500) and the Renaissance - Baroque (15001800). Among the most outstanding structures of the Romanesque style are St. George's Basilica (at Prague's Castle), St. Martin's Rotunda (on Vylehrad Hill), the Rotunda of the Holy Rood and St. Longinus Rotunda in the New Town.

Czechoslovakia has developed a rich culture in literature, language, theater, cinema and art.

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM following the announcement of the scholarship award. They must attend college on a full-time basis and carry a normal academic load without interruption and in accordance with the college calendar. They must maintain academic and personal standards satisfactory to the college and to the Committee.

College Entrance Examination Board. Arrangements to take the S.A.T. or A.C.T. test should be made with their local high school.

Criteria for selecting scholarship winners from among high school seniors include: • Results of the S.A.T. and/or A .0 .T. • High school records • References and recommendations • The Committee's judgment of the applicant's potential • SPJST involvement

SCHOLARSHIP Program For SPJST Members The Slavonic Benevolent Order of The State of Texas established a Scholarship Fund in 1982 to encourage young members to further their education and to help them achieve career goals. Funded by the SPJST and voluntary contributions by SPJST members, the Scholarship Program is administered by the SPJST Supreme Lodge as an investment in youth and in our economic and •social progress.

MILITARY SERVICE AND ILLNESS If a scholarship recipient enters military service, the scholarship will be held in reserve for a period of up to six (6) months after the date of his/her release from service. Illness or injury that causes a delay in acceptance or continuance of a scholarship will also be considered good cause for holding an award in reserve.

Applicants who are college undergraduates must submit official transcripts of past college work with their application.

Exact due dates and requirements for both the freshman and undergraduate programs will be furnished the member after they have sent in the initial application prior to December 31.

TYPE OF SCHOLARSHIP Four-year programs leading to a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE

ADMINISTRATION The SPJST Supreme Lodge has full authority to establish the rules and regulations governing the Scholarship Program or to amend them at any time as it deems necessary. Administration and financing, of the programs are the exclusive responsibility of the SPJST.

The Committee's decisions will be announced before the beginning of the fall semester.

Applicants must be qualified members of the SPJST. Qualified members are those having an active SPJST insurance certificate in force. It must remain in force during the tenure of the scholarship.

SELECTION OF ACCREDITED COLLEGE AND DEGREE

The Committee has exclusive jurisdiction in selecting scholarship winners. It acts in an advisory capacity to the SPJST Supreme Lodge.

The SPJST assumes no responsibility for the conduct, personal affairs, or debts of scholarship winners or scholarship applicants and will not be liable therefore in any manner.

Scholarship winners may attend any college in the United States of America accredited by a recognized accrediting body. Negotiations for admission must be conducted entirely by the scholarship applicant.

Application may be made during the high school senior year. Scholarships will be awarded only to recipients who have graduated from high school, or its equivalent.

College undergraduates may apply for a scholarship for the next school year.

Each year a member may apply whether they have been a previous recipient or not.

SELECTION Scholarships are awarded by a Committee selected by the Supreme Lodge of the SPJST. .The Committee consists of persons who have a recognized standing in the field of education and who are not associated in any other way with the SPJST or the SPJST Scholarship Fund.

Applicants who are high school seniors must take either the Scholastic Aptitude Test (S.A.T.) or the American College Test (A.C.T.) given by the

The SPJST annually awards $500 first year scholarships for high school graduates and $500 scholarships for college undergraduates.

ALL APPLICANTS MUST: 1. Be an SPJST insurance certificate holder in good standing (premium paying for duration of scholarship).

2. Return the application below by December 31 of this year. By sending in this application we then will send you the forms needed to apply along with appropriate instruction.

3. Accept the decision of our highly qualified Committee Members as final.

The SPJST Supreme Lodge has absolutely no influence in these decisions.
