REMARKS MADE AT THE CHARTERING CEREMONIES OF EAST TEXAS LODGE NO. 191 IN THE CIVIC CENTER 'IN LUFKIN, TEXAS ON SUNDAY, JULY 24, 1983 Supreme Lodge President Nick A. Morris: Inasmuch as a short history of how Lodge 191 had its beginnings and came into existence appear in the program brochure that you were handed as you came into the building, I will not dwell on that and repeat any of that information, but I will include it in the coverage of this event to be published in the Vestnik for a permanent record of the events of this day. In mid-1979 Bro. Chester Shmoldas, active sales representative in Lodge 74 Lovelady (Crockett), wrote Supreme Lodge President Morris a note asking him for the assistance of State Field Manager Silas Smith in organizing a new SPJST lodge in Lufkin in Angelina County. Silas Smith traveled to Lufkin and he and Chester Shmoldas met with approximately 45 prospective members and brought back 4 applications-3 for the new lodge and 1 for 7 4 Lovelady- not an overwhelming response, but a modest beginning, nonetheless. The occasion was an instruction night in polka dancing. About the same time, contact was made in the Home Office about Jerry Sizemore becoming a sales representative in the new Lodge 191. SFM McBride went out and

trained Jerry as a sales representative and he has written the big majority of new members into this lodge, with some assist ance in the very beginning by Chester Shmoldas. By April 11, 1983 Bro. Sizemore had written approximately 24 members and those members were present when SFMs Smith and McBride traveled to Lufkin and organized the lodge, that is, elected officers and installed them. Since that time, the membership has increased considerably and today there are 130 certificate holders/members in Lodge 191 and these will be the charter members. Besides Jerry Sizemore, there are two other sales representatives who are currently writing members into the lodge. These two are Mary Bevin and John Barret. For right now, however, I'd like to introduce Bro. Chester Shmoldas of Crockett and Lodge 74, who was helpful and instrumental in getting Lodge 191 started in this area. I would like to dwell for a few moments on the organization that you are becoming a part of today. Let me say, first of all, that you are joining a large fraternity of many brothers and sisters across this great State of Texas - some 56,000 .or 57,000 such members. The color brochures that we brought with us today (and we hope you all take one) graphically relate the story of who and what we are. The SPJST goes back to the years 1896 and 1897 to Fayette County where we had our humble beginnings. Just two weeks ago today, members of the Supreme

Lodge and approximately 100 people gathered on the courthouse lawn in La Grange to unveil and dedicate a marker in tribute to the historic meetings that took place in the second floor District Courtroom of that courthouse in 1896 and 1897. You will see pictures and read about that occasion in next week's Vestnik. One of the points that I made at that dedication was that the SPJST was founded and organized almost exclusively by Czech immigrants who had come to these shores and this state before the turn of the Century and who, having belonged

to another Fraternal Benefit Society with headquarters in the North, decided that they wanted an independent Fraternal Benefit Society based and operating in Texas. These were two basic reasons for this development: One was that these immigrants who found themselves in a new and strange land naturally sought out others in their communities who spoke the same language, had the same habits and customs, and had common and mutual social interests, that is, there was a longing and desire on the part of those people to (continued on page 6)

District VI Royalty - Duchess Leniee Kaspar, Queen l\fkheHe Srubar (both of Taiton Lodge 30); and King Michael Marek, and Danny Borak, Jr. (both of Lodge El Campo-HillieNo. ,H)), The new District VI Queen and King will also compete for the State Royalty titles Saturday, September 17th at Lodge 18 in Elgin.
