Historical Event at La Grange Birthplace of SPJST

REMARKS MADE AT THE DEDICATION AND UNVEILING OF THE HISTORICAL MARKER COMMEMORATING THE ORGANIZATION AND FOUNDING OF THE SPJST ON THE FAYETTE COUNTY COURTHOUSE GROUNDS, LA GRANGE, TEXAS SUNDAY, JULY 10th, 1983

Supreme Lodge President Nick Morris: Greetings to all of you! We · are honored and pleased that you here today took the time and made the effort to attend this brief but historic occasion. President Abraham Lincoln stood near the site where this great republic was born in Independence Hall, Philadelphia, a hundred years previous and during a flag-raising ceremony made a statement which I have borrowed (and changed just a little) and which I would like to para phrase: I am filled with emotion at finding myself standing near the place where collected together the wisdom, farsightedness, and devotion to principles, from which sprang the institution known today as the SPJST. Before I proceed with my other remarks, I would like to recognize some special guests here today: My wife Dorothy and son Michael Vice President Bernard Gebala and wife Evelyn Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska and wife Dorothy Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas and wife Betty Legal Adviser Sidney Kacir and wife Dorothy Director Ben Trcalek and wife Martha from Caldwell Director Sid Pokladník from Dallas Director Stanley Broz and wife Martha from near San Angelo Director Louis Hanus from Houston All of the above individuals are affiliated with the Supreme Lodge of the SPJST. The Honorable Oliver S. Kitzman, Judge of 155th Judicial District, and Mrs. Kitzman Walter Freytag, Chairman of Fayette County Historical Commis sion, and wife, Julia. You'll be hearing from Walter in a few minutes.

You'll be hearing from John in a few minutes. We wish to extend our special appreciation to County Judge Dan Beck and members of the Commis sioners' Court for having approved the erection and location of this marker on county property. Judge Beck was not able to be present today due to the serious illness of his

father, but we acknowledge the presence of his wife, Nancy Beck, and ask that she convey our words of gratitude to Judge Beck. Commissioner Arno L. Ruether, Pct. No. 1, and Mrs. Ruether Commissioner Jack Littlejohn, Pct. No. 2, and Mrs. Littlejohn Commissioner Wilbert J. Gross, Pct. No. 3, and wife Ruby We are sorry Commissioner Royce Brauner, Pct. No. 4, could not be present.

La Grange Mayor Charlie J ungmichel and Mrs. J ungmichel State Treasurer Ben Janda of the State Headquarters of the KJT located here in La Grange. We are also grateful for those members of the various news media who have taken time to record this event. As noted on the marker itself that we will be unveiling in just a few moments, the first historic meeting concerning the SPJST took place in this courthouse in the second story in what is now the District Court Room December 28th, 1896 · almost 87 years ago. At that time, 25 Czech· Texans, almost all of them immi grants from Europe, gathered in that court room to establish a new fraternal benefit Society known as the Slovanská Podporující Jednota Státu Texas, known to this day throughout the state as the SPJST. Eighty-six years ago, almost to the day on June 20, 1897, the First Convention of the SPJST met in the same District Courtroom and during that convention agreed that the date of July 1st of that year would be the date that the new organization officially started doing business in Texas. The State Charter was approved and issued by the Secretary of State on August 12th of that year. I. J. Gallia was the first president and J. R. Kubena was the first secretary. By July 1st of that year the membership in the new organization consisted of 507 men and 375 women, for a total of 882 charter members. Why and what led to the establishment of such an organization by a group of Texas immigrants? It has always been a constant pattern of immigration that those of a particular ethnic/ nationality group, after emigrating from their native land, seek out those who speak a common language, have common ideas, and share common customs. It was most natural then that this group of immigrants sought out the company and association of those of similar stations in life, plus the overwhelm ing desire to provide for their widows and orphans in the event of their death. The organization of the SPJST fulfilled a dual purpose: One of socializing and associating with your own kind, and the practical (Continued on Page 3)
