JOSHUA STUDENT HONORED AT MS PROMOTION

Member Chosen Miss Rogers

Several eighth graders won top academic honors at the end of the school closing held May 27th at the Joshua Middle School promotion ceremonies.

Brad Janek, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Janek, was second in the class of 228 students and therefore, gave the salutatory address. During his 3 years at Middle School, he earned a 97.20 average.

Besides being the second highest from his graduating class, he received several awards in Drama, lettered in Football and Basketball and also received a certificate for perfect attendance for the 1982-83 year period.

Brad and his parents are all members of Lodge 180 in Burleson.

Lisa Tepera has been selected to represent Rogers in the MISS TEXAS USA Pageant to be held in San Antonio, Texas, July 23 through August 1. The pageant finale will be televised at 8 p.m. August 1 from Sar Antonio. Selection was made after recent interviews at Dillard's Department Store in Temple.

Lisa, age 18, is a recent honor graduate of Rogers High School.

Lisa was a member of the Rogers Junior High and High School Honor Society, serving as vice president during 1982-83. Lisa also served as Senior Class secretary-treasurer.

She was Sophomore Homecoming Queen candidate. Lisa was also a Junior High and High School twirler.

Lisa has also been a member of Jeannie Adams' All Stars Twirling (Continued on Page 8)

A good employment agency can help you find a job in today's tough market, but it is important to know what you're getting into before hiring one.

Many employment . services are legitimate and useful, but a few charge large fees and misrepresent their services. To help you make a good choice, the Federal Trade Commission presents these tips: Types of firms. Don't judge an employment business by its name.

Whether it's called an "employment agency," an "executive-search firm," a "personnel-placement service" or an "executive-counseling service," the main thing to find out is what services it offers and how much it charges. Essentially, there are two kinds of outfits — employment agencies and executive-search firms.

Services. Employment agencies usually try to fill specific positions available within companies. Executive-search firms provide assistance with more general job-hunting skills, such as self-evaluation and resume preparation. They may or may not know of specific job openings.

Fees. Employment agencies usually require payment after a job is secured. The fee may be a percentage of your annual salary, or the employer may pay a flat fee. Executive-search firms often require payment in advance. In both cases, fees can range from several hundred to more than $1,000.

Regulation. Employment agencies are usually licensed by the state in which they operate. Executivesearch firms are licensed in only a few states.

Selecting an agency. Consider carefully: What kind of assistance do you really want? Take time to check out the agency before signing a contract Ask for names and phone numbers of other clients who can verify the agency's claims. See if local consumer-protection agencies have received complaints. And most important: Read the contract carefully before signing. What's in the contract counts — not verbal promises. *5*

Under a recent change in federal law, independent tire dealers and distributors are no longer required to register tires for you. They are only required to give you a registration form containing the tire-identification number from the sidewall of the tire. Travelers returning from abroad at Kennedy International Airport are encountering a new customs procedure that is said to be 50 percent faster and more effective against drug smugglers. The system uses two lines — red for travelers with items to be declared and green for those with nothing to declare.

Luggage on both lines is subject only to spot checks. Previously, all bags had to be inspected. In addition, roving customs agents check low-risk travelers at the baggage-claim area so they don't have to wait in line. *5*

One way to finance a homeimprovement project, college tuition or vacation is to use the appreciated market value of your home as collateral. If you bought a house several years ago, its value almost surely has risen substantially. To find out how large a loan your house might support, multiply its current market value by 75 percent. From that total, subtract the amount left on the balance of your mortgage.

The result is approximately the amount you can expect to borrow.

Such loans are available at about 14 percent interest. *5*

From the President's Office We Need Your Help!

SPJST History Project The final installment of the History of the SPJST has been turned over to the publisher after being examined by a special subcommittee of two directors, the Supreme Lodge President and the SL Legal Adviser.

There are still a number of details to work out and decisions to be made, but it is anticipated that the planned publication date of the book is sometime in early 1984. It is tentatively titled A HISTORY OF THE SPJST: A Texas Chronicle 1897-1980. It is anticipated that the book will contain approximately 350 pages, including pictures. It is expected that the pictures will make up about 40% of the book. There are pictures of convention sites, lodge buildings, lodge officers, historical places, and pictures of individuals. I was able to research and complete the history over a period of, four years — July 1977 to July 1981. The book also contains a complete index.

The Table Of Contents appearing below gives you a good idea of the subject material covered and the scope of the information.

Here is where we need your help: Before we place an order for the number of copies we need to know the potential demand for the book and you can help us in this regard by completing the accompanying form and returning it to the Supreme Lodge at your earliest convenience.

The Vestnik goes only to those persons on the Vestnik mailing list (11,500) and we are confident that there are those outside this list who might be interested in this book, plus even people outside the SPJST. Naturally, a book covering the timeframe that it does has to include hundreds and hundreds of names — names that will be instantly recognizable and have personal meaning to so many, including those who are currently active on various levels of the SPJST. The index will reveal this.

The most important thing that we want you to help us determine at this time is the demand for either soft or hardback covers. In either case, the cost will depend on the quantity printed and the more that are ordered, the less each book will cost.

It is anticipated that the softback edition will cost in the range from $8 to $10 and the hardback from $15 to $20, BASED ON AN ORDER OF 500 BOOKS, plus a nominal additional charge for postage and handling.

After we receive a number of these forms we will then be in a better positiop, 4 to a4§4s4" the

demand. It is expected (and we hope) that our lodges will want to have a copy of this book a*s well as individuals. A copy will also be sent to the Library of Congress.

Please take the time to complete the accompanying form, either as an individtal, or appropriate persons representing their individual lodges.

We are using this means of the Vestnik to conduct the survey rather than individual letters, cards, or mailouts. After this week, this announcement and form will appear in another part of the Vestnik for several weeks. Please look for it.

I will no doubt have more comments on the book itself later this year, certainly before it is made available for distribution. In the meantime, we welcome any inquiries about the book. We think that anyone interested in the SPJST will certainly want to have a copy for their personal possession or at least access to a copy. This is something that had been talked about for several decades and even attempted but never achieved. Now, see the Table Of Contents below.

Youth Club report was given by Sister Mary Ann Kieschnick. She reported that new officers are: President-Betty Stein, Vice President-Keith Kieschnick, Secretary-Cheryl Schilhab, Treasurer-Curtis Kieschnick, Sergeant-atArms-Alan Cerny, Flag BearerDebbie Beyer, and Sunshine Committee is William Janik. July 10th was the date for District V YAD at Lodge 88 and we hoped that many of our members would be present.

We are sorry to report sick members: Frank Tumis, Elizabeth Hermis, Maggie Cernoch, Jeanette Yancheck.

New applicants are: Mary R. Herman, Carol A. Herman, Nancy Perez (additional insurance) and Leonard M. Hermis (additional insurance), all acquired by Sales Representative Sidon Tumis.

Capsule prize drawing was for Grace Marie Birdwell who was absent. We will draw again for $50 at the next meeting August 7th.

Door prizes went to Howard Kieschnick, Frank Tumis, Henrietta Veselka, Terry Kieschnick.

Refreshment tickets were given as the meeting adjourned at 8:50 p.m., until the next meeting for Sunday, August 7th at 2 p.m.

One of our members, Karen Jochen is vacationing at Pensacola, Florida. She is gone for 13 days to stay on the island on the beach.

Karen reports there is a most beautiful beach where the water is green and blue with white pure sand. She also went deep sea fishing and sightseeing in Florida. She is vacationing with her friends and neighbors, the Schoenstein family.

We will be glad to have her back home and hope she is not too sunburned.

Sister Mason reported that December 4th has been set by Lodge 180 for the Metropolex Lodges' Christmas Party.

Sister Mary Pavey reported sending sympathy cards to Sisters Mary Elizabeth Phillips and family on the loss of her stepmother, Sister Lillie Becan and Angie Polasek on the loss of her sister, Mrs. Kutej. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the families and may they rest in eternal peace.

Get-well cards were sent to Sisters Agnes Hejl of our lodge and Sister Anna Davis of Lodge 92.

(Benny and I had gone to the hospital to see Sister Davis and she passed away 30 minutes before our arrival.)

Brother Steinman reported the District III meeting will be held October 30, 1983 at Lodge 35, Elk. Brother Milan reported on a special meeting to be held at Lodge 180 in Burleson at 7:30 p.m. July 20th; a film on Child Abuse will be shown.

He also reported on his and Sister Milan's visit to the Alvin Polasek Gallery in Orlando, Florida; it was very interesting.

Brother Rome Milan arrived home safely from Canada where he was a photographer of the World Universities' Games for the USGF. Brother Jerry and Sister Paula Merlick and children arrived home safely from a 10-day vacation in East Lyne, Connecticut. They visited Paula's mother and then covered the surrounding territory. We were sorry to hear their daughter Maria broke her arm on the trip. Get-well soon!

Benny and I spent 6 wonderful days in the lovely home of our niece, Sister Mary Harrison and family in St. Louis, Missouri. My sister, Mickey Ban since her illness has been making her home there. I am happy to report she is doing a lot better. We also visited my brother, Dungan and wife, Alma, and nephew, Brother Joseph Ban. Enroute home we spent some time in Oklahoma City visiting our friends and ex-neighbors, which was most enjoyable.

While we were away we heard Brother Bill and Sister Mary Renfro were surprised with a dinner at the hall for their 45th anniversary.

We extend our congratulations to Debra Spann who won Junior Miss Jamboree. Debra is the daughter of Sister Rose Ann Spann.

A card was received from Sister Prill in Germany and sends her hello to all. She said that she is having a good time. We were sorry to hear that, right after Sister Prill left, her daughter, Sister Eva Dockery broke her foot. Get-well soon, Eva! Our meeting adjourned with Sister Rose Steinman the door prize recipient, refreshments, games and social.

Dear Members, The regular monthly meeting Sunday started with a very sad note, with a moment of silence for Edwin Adamcik, one of Lodge 183's charter members, due to a tragic accident.

He will be missed by his family and all of the organizations that he belonged to. Lodge 183 wishes to send their sympathy to the family and friends.

Our meeting was well-attended and all reports were read and accepted as read.

The Building Committee has to inform Lodge 183 members and all of you SPJST members around the state that there will be a delay in the Grand Opening of the new lodge building because of a shortage of East Texas Lodge 191 held their sheetrock, the builder informed us first dance June 25, 1983 at the KC that he was having to order it from Hall in Lufkin, Texas. Dear Readers: The 1983-1984 youth year is in full swing. Numerous activities are taking place throughout the state.

District YADs are giving the youth an opportunity to participate in crafts and talent and compete for the title of district king and queen.

All first place District YAD winners will compete at the State YAD on August 21st at Temple High School.

Youth Club Members, remember everyone cannot be a winner; if that were so there would be no need for any type of competition. You are all winners! You have had the courage to participate and compete with your, peers. This not only gives you confidence but builds your character and prepares you for becoming a leader in life.

Young people, you are our future.

We are proud of each of you and will support you in the tasks you undertake. The Youth Department wishes you the best of luck at your District YADs and we continue to cheer you on at State YAD. District king and queen contestants will compete at State Royalty September 17, 1983 at Lodge 18, Elgin.

To All Leaders, Chaperones and Campers Attending District II Camp: Camp will start Sunday, July 31st for the Junior group ages 6 through 11. This group of children and their chaperones are to arrive at camp between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. Sunday, July 31st. This Junior group will go home Wednesday after the noon meal at 2 p.m. or 3 p.m.

The Teen group of children ages 12 through 15 will arrive at Camp Val Verde between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Wednesday, August 3rd and this Teen group is scheduled to go home Saturday, August 6th at 2 p.m.

The activities for the Junior group will start at 5 p.m. Sunday and will continue until Wednesday after the noon meal at which time the camp will be over for the Junior group and the Teens will arrive. The Junior group has more entries and more adult leaders and chaperones.

In the Teen age group we have less entries and less leaders and chaperones so they are not divided too equally. If any 12-year-old youth members wish to go with the Teens, they may do so because this will be suggested for the future, so as to equalize the groups better.

The morning break which includes cookies, punch and Gaterade will be furnished by the camp, but the afternoon break is soda pop and the children must buy their own so they should have money for these drinks, also some SPJST caps and T-shirts available.

If you have any questions ask your leader or feel free to call me at any time.

Hat or cap (for hiking and archery) 11. Change of clothes for each day and large grocery bag or garbage bag for dirty clothes 12. Comfortable shoes (2 pair are desirable) because you will walk and play quite a bit.

Our schedule includes swimming, canoeing, horseback riding, crafts, some hiking, outdoor and indoorgames of many varieties.

Parties are planned for each night.

Table grace will also be given by the youth at each meal.

The shortest way to get to Camp Val Verde is to take Hwy. 36 West out of Temple, go about 6 miles, take Hwy. 317 to the right, toward Moody and go straight through Moody and to McGregor, go to the 2nd red light in McGregor and turn right; this will be Hwy. 84 heading east toward Waco, go about 8 miles to the Val Verde exit to the left, follow that road and when you come to a "T" turn right and then take the 2nd road to the left and that takes you into camp. Stop at the flag pole for further instructions.

It seems that I am running out of time this year trying to get this in the Vestnik so I hope you will come to camp and see what else was planned this last week.

The schedule planned for this year will be similar to last year's for the junior category since we will have to divide them into five groups and plan to give them a little time to rest during noon. If it will be too hot we may have to slow down our activities.

We certainly hope all of you who sent in applications will be able to attend because we are having a place reserved for you in your group and your cabin and we have plans to have a great camp.

Let's all remember our fall district meeting and bowling for the youth August 14th at Lodge 187 in Round Rock. More on this next week. Hoping to see you at camp!

Dear Vestnik Readers, Lodge 30 members attended District VI SPJST camp at Bastrop State Park from June 27 to June 30.

We left our meeting place at 11:00 a.m. and arrived at camp at about 2.

At camp, we went swimming twice a day and did activities such as craft, sports, games, folk dancing, and went on hikes. We also had parties every night which were planned by the Junior leaders. The theme of the first night was a "toga party", the second night was a "masquerade party", and the third night was on "Hawaii". Everyone really had a good time.

I would like to thank the SPJST for making it possible for us to go to camp.

District III YAD Held At Lodge 25, Ennis June 26, 1983

LODGE 84 DALLAS TEEN CLUB HAPPENINGS IN JUNE June 6th the Teen Club of Lodge 84 Dallas had a meeting to discuss District III YAD and elect officers.

The new officers for 1983 are: President —Richard Andreason, Vice President—Viki Gerlich, Secretary — Lisa Reznik, Treasurer — Paul Manak.

District III YAD was very successful and we took several places in the competition. Our Junior and Senior groups won Beseda, also our Junior Group Talent. In Royalty competition, our King Richard Andreason, did very well and he received 1st runner-up. Our Queen Michelle Conner 2nd runner-up.

July 16th we will have our Princess Dance in which we select the King and Queen for next year's YAD. The ones who sell the most dance and sale tickets are king and queen. The money raised goes toward a trip for the teens, so come out and support your favorite candidate!

DISTRICT VI ENJOYS EDUCATIONAL TOUR Dear Vestnik Readers, Lodge 30 members and adults went on a District VI tour July 6, 1983 to New Braunfels. We left for the tour at 6 a.m. from where we met at the Taiton Community Center.

First of all, we toured the Natural Bridge Caverns where we learned about many natural formations that take years and years to form. Then, we went to Landa Park where we ate our lunch and went on various different rides throughout the park.

Then, the last place we went to was a tour to Schbtterbahn, there we went on different slides, tube shoots, and on the paddle boats.

Afterwards, we ate supper there and went home.

Dear Readers, We had cur monthly meeting July 7th, with 15 members present. We discussed our last month's activities which were Sandy Lake Park and YAD. YAD was at our lodge this year. It was fun. I entered two things but next year I plan to enter in everything. Everybody from our lodge won something to take home.

Everyone going to camp signed up. A swimming party is planned for July 19th and August 1st at 6:30 at Sokol Pool.

A home for battered wives and abused children is coming to our town. This will be one of our charity projects, either to send money to help build it or send canned goods to help feed them.

A volleyball tournament is in the making. Our youth will be playing against our adult lodge. This will be fun. If you would like to participate contact our youth leader, Adell Rejcek. We need cheerleaders too, Ya'll come.

SEATON YOUTH CLUB NAMES COMMITTEES Lodge 47 Youth Club met Tuesday night, July 5, 1983 at 7:30 p.m. with Shana Patterson, president, calling the meeting to order.

Pledge of Allegiance and club motto was led by Nora Skrabanek.

We had 14 members present and 3 guests; guests present were Martha Culp, Emily Hutka and Patrick Hutka.

Plans were discussed for District YAD, which by the time this appears in the paper, will be over with. I hope some of our kids won.

We also discussed Camp and appointed some members to a couple of committees. They were Telephone Committee-Kim Craft, Kathy Billeck and Deanna Culp.

Reflections On The Dedication Of The Chapel Of Our Lady Of Hostyn In Washington D.C. The weekend of June 24th through 26th shall be recorded as one of the most memorable events in the history of Czech-America and for two groups of Texas-Czech Moravian pilgrims it will be remembered as a time to never be for gotten as they gathered in our nation's capital city to celebrate the dedication of the Czech people's gift to our nation, the Chapel of Our Lady of Hostyn.

Friday, June 24th, two groups gathered at the Houston Intercontinental airport for the flight to D.C. One group was led by Bishop Morkovsky, the acknowledged spiritual leader of American-Czech Catholics and the other was a tour of 22 members from Klub Kontinental under the direction of Alden Blanar Smith, president of St. Charles KJT, Abbott, Texas. Upon arrival at Washington National Airport, the Klub Kontinental group was escorted to the Washington Hilton Hotel by a representative of the Bell-line Limo Service; the

Cooking, Pictorial Art and Sewing competition.

Lisa is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Tepera, Jr. of Rogers.

She plans to attend Temple Junior College and the University of Texas majoring in Computer Sciences. She is employed by Boise Cascade Corporation in Temple, Texas.

Lisa and her family and grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Tepera, Sr., are members of Lodge 47, Seaton. Lisa has been a member of SPJST since 1965. remainder of the day was spent in leisure; many met their fellow Texans, met new friends, or visited the many stores and speciality shops in the area. In the late afternoon, many of the groups went to the Shrine for the Holy Hour and transfer of the relic of St. John Nepomucene Neumann to the Czech Chapel. Before an overflow crowd, John Cardinal Kral of Philadelphia conducted the impressive rites: homilies were delivered by Abbott Valentine Sklazacek CSB of St. Procopius, Lisle, Illinois and Bishop Andrew Grutka of Gary, Indiana.

The remainder of the evening was spent around the pool and cabana with much visiting, swimming, and refreshments to cope with the Washington humidity. Surrounded by ethnic restaurants, many had a difficult time in choosing a dining spot but most of the Klub Kon tinental found the "Anna Maria" Italian Restaurant as their favorite and enjoyed the services of a young Italian-American waiter by the name of "Jack."

The morning of Saturday, June 25th had been designated for the consecration of the altar by Archbishop James Hickey so the group was up bright and early for the trip to the Shrine of the Immaculate (Continued on Page 11)

Letter To The Editor Vestnik Bro. Rudy Sefcik, Editor P.O. Box 85 West, Texas Dear Brother Rudy, June 9th, Henrietta and I left for a wonderful vacation to Florida, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Needless to say, it was great swimming, sunning and snorkeling at the beach and pool, playing tennis, fishing, the Casino, sightseeing and shopping and all the typical vacation activities. We also visited Walt Disney's new Epcot Center and World Showplace which was very educational . . . but our most memorable experience was at Winter Park, Fla. In 1980, while visiting in my mother's hometown, Kunovice, Uherske Hradiste, Czechoslovakia, we met a lady with several beautiful sculptures in her home. They were by a relative of hers, who immigrated to the U.S. and become a great artist and sculptor, Albin Polasek. On our return home we inquired about him and found his home and gallery were in Winter Park, Florida just outside of Orlando.

We had wanted to visit and found time only this June.

Polasek passed away in 1965 and left his Gallery Home for the public to visit. The Foundation has been managed by his wife, Emily.

Emily is one of the most precious and entertaining people anyone could hope to meet. Our visit with this charming lady, her stories and generosity along with the marvelous work of Albin Polasek, a Czech immigrant who loved his mother country and cherished his freedom and opportunities in this great United States, will always hold a special memory to us.

I encourage anyone traveling to that area of the U.S. to make it a top priority to visit the Polasek Gallery in Winter Park, Florida and with a little luck you may be fortunate to meet the wonderful lady, Emily.

I am enclosing a brief synopsis of Albin Polasek. I know the readers of the Vestnik will enjoy.

Albin Polasek 1879-1965 Czech-American Sculptor All classical music lovers enjoy symphonies and chamber music of the renowned Czech composer, Antonin Dvorak, but how many of us know of another great Czech-American classical artist in an allied art?

This is the portrait story of Czech-American sculptor Albin Polasek, a monumental wizard, who literally carved his own destiny. Carving His Own Destiny is the book written about him by Ruth Sherwood, and the Albin Polasek Foundation, Inc. in Winter Park, Florida contains much of his art, and includes a studio, two galleries, a chapel with fourteen stations of the cross, and

3-acre outside gardens, all open to visitors and tourists without charge.

Albin's widow, Emily Polasek, President of the Foundation, is utterly dedicated to the sculptor's art, so that it has a timeless life in the art world.

She is one of a minority in America who is not class or money conscious. Virtue, common sense, humor and taste are her attributes. She is irresistibly entertaining, yet serious, and has a deep insight into the moral nature of men and women.

The story of Albin Polasek's life is truly the story of America as a land of Opportunity, and represents the gratitude so many talented men and women expressed for this land, which became their new home when they came as immigrants.

Albin Polasek was born on Saint Valentine's Day in 1879 in Frenstat, Moravia, the seventh son of Josef and Petronila Polasek. At age 15, he began his long art career as a woodcarver apprentice in Vienna. Even at that young age he carved a work of The Nativity in wood while on vacation at home.

The only model he used was the family cow, and he ground pigment himself to color the figures. This first art creation is immediately recognized.

When Albin was 22 in 1901, and already an expert wood carver, he immigrated to America in the steerage class on a German ship. In those days, these evil smelling quarters were tolerable to only the strongest stomachs. There were no dining tables, passengers had to carry dishes to the kitchen for food, and even had to wash their own dishes.

Albin's brother, Robert, who had come to America earlier, was a revered priest in Veseli, Minnesota, and another brother, Emil, was the parish priest in Lamberton, Minnesota. In Veseli, the young artist found some work in wood carving, but learned very little English as everyone spoke Czech in this transplanted Czech village. A relief of the Virgin and Child with St. Dominic still hangs in the church in Veseli, a prized art work of Polasek's. So, a few months later, Albin started work in an altar factory in Dubuque, Iowa, carving life-size religious figures. Then he was asked by the owner of a much larger factory in La Crosse, Wisconsin to work as a figure carver. During his first two years in the United States, Albin saved enough money, and was accepted as a student of sculpture in the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia.

Incidentally, Albin already had naturalization papers at this time to become a citizen of the United States. He also did some painting in his second year at the Academy, although he had never had any formal instructions. During the summers Albin earned money by working in the La Crosse Hackner Altar Factory. He carved a marble archangel and a life-sized statue of Jan Hus, and was awarded the Cresson Foreign Traveling scholarship to study in Europe for the next three summers.

In 1909 Albin obtained his final citizenship papers, and his statue The Eternal Moment, now in the Paul Schultze Collection in Chicago, was highly praised and publicized. "The Eternal Moment" is a remarkable sculpture by Albin Polasek, student in the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and has been adjudged so far beyond the scope of ordinary student achievement that the annual prizes of the Academy have been awarded to more student-like competitors, and the faculty will bestow upon the young sculptor a reward more in accord with his pre-eminent artistic ability. Eternal Moment is a standing pair of a man and woman, at the exquisite moment of first love, when it is still spiritual and tender.

In 1910 Albin won the country's highest art award, a fellowship to the American Academy in Rome, for his sculpture Faith, Hope and Charity.

Featured in that monument were figures of a man, woman, and child. Polasek worked and studied in Rome three years.

Evoking Memories is the Hitt large relief sculptured in Rome, and the profound talent of the artist is evident in the ease of design, solidity of figures, and the difficult problem of tense fingers showing through the strings of a harp.

Maiden of the Roman Campagna was accepted by the Academy in Rome at this time, and in 1912 he made a bronze bust of Francis D. Millet, a mural painter of distinction and founder of the American Academy of Art in Rome. In April of that same year, Millet perished in the Titanic sea disaster, and nine bronze replicas were ordered for different cities in America. When J. Pierpont Morgan died, Polasek made a bust of him, which was placed first in the Morgan Library, then it went to the Metropolitan Museum for many years. Its permanent setting is now in the American Academy in Rome.

One of the most famous of all Polasek works is The Sower made in Rome. In 1916 the Chicago Art Institute ordered the bronze Sower to be placed on the front steps of the building facing Michigan Avenue. Many years later, in 1963, the MacNeal Memorial Hospital Association of Illinois used the Sower as a model of human anatomy in their annual report with this explanation: Our search for art led us through Michelangelo, DaVinci, and we were delighted with our choice by the great artist Polasek."

Following studies in Rome and Greece, Albin Polasek started his own studio in New York City, where he was immediately confronted with the need to keep a roof over his head, and of earning his bread and butter. He was asked to do a portrait of Louis Tiffany, famous as the inventor of the irridiscent glass that bears his name, but decided not as Tiffany was highly nervous and always occupied with artistic glass projects. Instead, Albin made a portrait of Tiffany's daughter.

Albin's Aspiration figure is in the collection of Samuel Fleisher in Philadelphia, a seated female figure holding in her right hand musical pipes.

Her left arm, raised, encircles loosely a little cherub head. This figure won the Widener Gold Medal from the Pennsylvania Academy.

In 1916 Albin Polasek was asked by the Chicago Art Institute to be head of the Department of Sculpture. From the start he was popular with his classes. One of the students was Ruth Sherwood, who wrote the book about him. One can easily deduce from her book that she was deeply in love with the sculptor many years. As is many times true with great artists, Polasek's greatest passion was his work. He did marry Ruth Sherwood when he was 72, and she died some eighteen months later following surgery for cancer of the throat.

At the Chicago Art Institute, Polasek's method of teaching was simple and forceful, and he insisted on construction based on the true structure of nature. In his words: "When every part moves into every other part, as it does in life, then the portrait is finished." It is this movement which makes the difference between a living work and something inanimate. He made special effort to instill architectural scale. Sculpture was originally the hand maiden of architecture, and just as important as it was in the classical times of Egypt or Greece.

For many years, Albin Polasek was known as the "Chicago" artist as he created many of his sculptures here. During World War One he produced a Victory medal for the Czechoslovakian cause an upright figure of a fierce-eyed youth clad in the dress of his own mountains, holding in one hand a drawn sword, while with the other he protects the little green shoot that springs from the roots of the dead stump of a Linden tree at his feet. Around that stump coils the enemy dragon, which has destroyed it and which he has slain.

The inscription carved around the medal reads "Svoboda zivot Naroda" (Liberty is the life of a nation). The, Linden tree shoot bore five of the decorative heart-shaped leaves, one for each of the five Czech provinces that were fighting for freedom — Bohemia, Moravia, Slovakia, Silesia, Rusinia.

In 1921 Man Carving His Own Destiny won the Logan Medal. Recently the Inland Steel Company had a page on this statue — "The figure of a man is represented as chiseling himself from a bloc* of marble. The trunk, head, arms have already been fashioned; a mallet held in the right hand is driving a chisel, which is held in the left

10/V ✓STNiK—Wednesday, July 20, 1983 hand as it cuts away marble to fashion the Yeet and legs. The man's face is set so one could almost hear him say: 'I'll show them. I'll finish myself. I'll make something of myself. I won't go through life with a mass of rock about my feet.

I'm going to get somewhere.' This statue in a tonand-a-half stone edition stands at the entrance to the patio of Polasek's Winter Park Home. It would not be a bad idea to display the statue where it could be easily seen by all the complaining, whining people, by all the weak, flabby muscled, dyspeptic and anemic, by all the lame, who wait day by day expecting to be helped over the stile."

In 1924, Polasek created the Forest Idyll — a mischievous wood nymph carries a fawn in her arms, while the mother deer stares anxiously at her baby. This statue is in the Brookgreen Gardens in South Carolina. In 1965, when the new City Hall in Winter Park was completed, Albin Polasek presented the city with a bronze edition, which graces the entrance to the building.

Polasek's statue of Daniel Boone is in the Hall of Fame in New York City, and in 1927 the artist was honored with the invitation to become a member of the National Academy of Design.

When he was asked for an oil painting of himself, he presented a self portrait in one of his Moravian embroidered shirts. Polasek was also presented with an honorary degree of Master of Fine Arts.

In 1926 Albin Polasek received a commission from the Czechs in America for a memorial statue of President Wilson to be placed opposite the Wilson Station in Prague. The statue was enthusiastically received by the people, but in 1938 when the Germans invaded Czechoslovakia, the beautiful Wilson statue was one of their first targets. The statue fell, headfirst, but landed in the upright position, so the Czechs felt that the spirit of Wilson would prevail.

The Pilgrim Mother is a life-sized figure stand ing in the Bohemian National Cemetery in Chicago, and was commissioned in 1927. Another stat ue here is his mother and son figure, a memorial statue for a family whose son served in the Army and never returned. In viewing this work of art, one can feel the reluctance with which the young son leaves the protection of his mother. A baby in the arms of the mother represents the youngest child at home. Another cemetery monument is Pilgrim At The Eternal Gate in Cleveland, Ohio.

The sculptor designed a doorway of granite, before which stands the bronze figure of a man.

He is reaching for the knocker, but is looking back over his shoulder for one last glimpse of his past life before he enters forever the secret portals.

A few years earlier, Albin Polasek met opera singer, Boza Oumiroff and his pianist wife, known professionally as Ella Spravka, both Czech and well known in Europe. Polasek had a resonant, spirited voice, and became Oumiroff's enthusiastic pupil. His voice had the flexibility of a baritone, but he could sing with ease deep notes of the basso profundo. The two sang duets for professional and social programs for the next eight years, until Oumiroff died in 1929. One of the most difficult numbers Polasek sang was the part of Kecal in Bedrich Smetana's Bartered Bride.

During this period, Polasek created for the Cathedral of Se. Paul in Minnesota a group eight feet high of Saints Cyril and Methodius.

July 4, 1927 marked the unveiling of the Wilson Statue, and the event was attended by many notables — composer Rudolph Friml, author Karel Capek, among them. In 1928 during the tenth anniversary of Czechoslovak independence, Polasek was awarded the Order of the White Lion. At that

time only one other American had received this distinction — Mary MacDolkell, who served immigrants at the University of Chicago settlement. This medal is a beautifully designed white lion on a crimson field. On the other side are seals of the five provinces of Czechoslovakia.

In 1929, while renting a studio in Prague, Polasek realized his dream of creating Radigast, the pagan god, in clay. It was built on a colossal scale, nine feet or more, and is his conception of the pagan god. The body is that of a man, with head and claws of a lion, and horned head. Looking into Radigast's grim face, one can imagine him devouring the pine trees and rocks of his own mountains. Another statue is a group of two.

Christian missionaries, Saints Cyril and Methodius, who overthrew the pagan cult. Both statues were laboriously moved up Mt. Radhost above Frenstat at his own expense. Someone asked: "Why do you go to such trouble and expense?

People won't appreciate these statues." He answered, "I have made them for the future.

When you and I are gone, they will still be there.

And, if one wanderer out of a hundred comes along who understands their message, I shall rest content."

Another of his statues, Primeval Struggle of a wolf and man is in a courtyard in Frenstat, Czechoslovakia, facing the school he attended as a child.

In 1930 Polasek accepted an offer to be a professor during the school year in the American Academy in Rome. During the winter of 1933 he was promoted to full Academician in the National Academy of Design, and then during the depression, he returned to the United States to work. In Vicennes, Indiana is his statue of the revolutionary priest Father Pierre Gibault, part of the George Rohers Clark Memorial.

Czech and eat Czech foods. Among his many friends was retired Dr. William Kubat and his wife, Emily, whom the sculptor met thirty years earlier in Chicago. Dr. Kubat was a third generation American of Czech ancestry, who loved art and music, so a deep friendship grew between them. Emily Kubat was the daughter of Josef and Teresa Muska, who had come to America from Prague. The Kubats and Albin were friends several years, and Dr. Kubat encouraged Albin to remove the braces from his crippled left hand and leg. These braces apparently caused a mental block that prevented full coordination in his right hand.

At this time, the Hungarian Revolution occurred and Albin created his first important work with his one good hand since he had become paralyzed — Victor of Moral Law, which was awarded best sculpture of the year by the Woodmere Art Gallery in Philadelphia.

Dr. Kubat died following surgery in February, 1960, and his widow, Emily, married the sculptor in 1961 to help him continue with his work and adjust to his physical handicap. Albin Polasek wanted to keep his statues all in one place, so Emily joined him in establishing on their estate in Winter Park a home for his "children." A nonprofit corporation was organized, and trusts were established to care for Emily and his relatives in Moravia. So, the Albin Polasek Foundation was born.

When Hitler invaded Czechoslovakia, Polasek cancelled his plans to live in Czechoslovakia. For the next nine years, Albin produced some of his finest work for St. Cecelia Cathedral in Omaha, Nebraska, including nine large carved wooden candlesticks for an altar; Victorius Christ crucifix, six saints in white mahogany for the pulpit, a white marble madonna, and fourteen stations of the cross in bronze.

Emily Polasek In 1942, during World War II, he created the famous Mother Crying Over the World, which is in the Hall of Fame in New York City.

Polasek's monumental statue of the Blanik Knight on horseback was created at the University of Chicago. His original idea was to portray President Masaryk's achievements as liberator of Czechoslovakia, and a great believer in truth, liberty, and democracy. There is an old legend about knights sleeping at Mount Blanik, until such a time arises when the country is in great danger and the mountain will open up to allow King Wenceslaus, the patron Saint of Old Bohemia, to ride out of the mountain with his army of knights to drive out the enemy. The sculptor was commissioned by a group of Chicago Czechs to make this memorial in 1941. Because of World War II, and the monstrous size of this monument, actually the sculptor donated this work of art in 1949.

Albin Polasek intended to return to his homeland, but realized this was no longer possible. He began to think about Florida, as he had visited Winter Park several times. He built a home and studio there in 1950 on Lake Osceola, following plans he designed himself. Shortly afterward, at age 72, he suffered a stroke, which left him paralyzed on his left side, and he was destined to spend the rest of his life in a wheel chair. He married Ruth Sherwood, December 14, 1950, who died eighteen months later. Albin had many friends and servants to care for his needs, but he was a lonely man. He =needed' to' talk`

Short of stature, with a slight limp since childhood, when Albin was dropped as a babe by a worker in his parent's inn, with no money, no knowledge of English, he overcompensated with endless energy and a passionate talent for creating. He was a classical realist, who delighted in bringing life's fire to his creations, and was four years behind is his commissions through most of his fifty working years. The "starving" artist symbol did not apply to Polasek. His financial success was enormous. A banker friend, rummaging for a pencil, once found $14,000 worth of uncashed checks many months old. From then on, the banker took over Polasek's financial planning. At age 80, with the use of only one-half his body, and helped by Emily Polasek, he completed sixteen art works, which illustrate his courage and intense desire to portray greatness in art.

One of the most unusual statues in Winter Park is of Emily playing the harp in the patio pool. The strings of the harp are flowing water.

Albin Polasek died May 19, 1965 and left a legacy of culture as the Foundation and gardens hold some 200 sculptures and paintings. There are more than 400 of his art works in the world for many generations to enjoy.

Upon arrival, and the various shrines of the major ethnic groups: Croats, Slovenes, Poles, Ikranians, Irish, and the Byzantinerite Catholics. An hour before the actual ceremony, the K.K. Group gathered at the chapel and what an inspiring emotional sight it was to view the chapel for the first time.

The entrance is stained glass depicting scenes from the life of St. John Neumann. Upon entering, one's eyes go to the area above the altar where there is a replica of the Statue of Our Lady of Hostyn and the Child Jesus. Above the altar is a large cross of Czech crystal while on the walls are two mosiacs depicting the Infant of Prague and St. Wenseclaus. On the four columns within the chapel are bronze statues of the twelve Czech Saints and this has been described as the "Czech Heaven." Because of his devotion to the Sacrament of Penance and Holy Communion, the relic of St. John Neumann has been placed near the confessionals and Our Lady's chapel is the official chapel of reconciliation for the Shrine.

The dedication began at 11 a.m. with music provided by the Cecilia Chorus Choir and a brass wind ensemble. The music was in English, Czech and Latin and included the ever-popular "Tisickrat pozdravujeme tebe." Homilies for the consecretion were given by Msgr. Peter Lekavy of Cavalier, North Dakota and Bishop Daniel Kucera of Salina, Kansas.

Following visits to the gift, shop, cafeteria, and the upper church, the group then left for a tour of the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land, located near the campus of Catholic University. The monastery is an exact replica of the Sacred places in the Holy Land and is built to represent the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. While at the altar of Transfiguration, the priest-guide requested we sing a hymn in Czech and we responded with "Zdravas Maria." Many of the visitors remarked on the beauty of the hymn and how it resounded throughout the great church. Also of interest were the Stations of the Cross, in the various languages of the world, which surround the cloister and the very beautiful, wellmanicured gardens of the monastery.

One of the highlights of the trip occurred Saturday evening, as over 1,000 people gathered for the testimonial dinner in honor of Frantisek Cardinal Tomasek, primate of Bohemia. (Unfortunately, he was unable to be present in the U.S.) Mr. Ralph Perk, former mayor of Cleveland served as Master of Ceremonies and did his best to keep the program moving as "rapidly" as possible. Many notables spoke but the highlight of the evening was an address given by the Honorable Jean Kirkpatrick, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, a true friend to all Slavic people, Mrs. Kirkpatrick received several standing ovations.

The first St. John Neumann Award was given to President Reagan, (since he was not present, the plaque shall be given to him later at a ceremony in the White House). The evening concluded with a number of musical and vocal seleqiops f-rce,

our great composers, Smetana and Dvorak.

Sunday was the day of the official celebration and Czechs from throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Australia gathered to make this an event never to forget.

Upon arriving at the Shrine, the Klub Kontinental group gathered at the Chapel of the Byzantine rite to recite the rosary for many intentions which included prayers for the church and the people of Czechoslovakia. An inspirational "Mini" homily was given to us by our own Father Alois Lezak, pastor of Visitation parish in Westphalia.

At 11:45 a.m., the great bells began to ring from the Knights of Columbus bell tower while the many official groups gathered to march in procession into the church. Led by Carol David of East Bernard, dressed in a Kjvov "kroj," the group followed Alden Smith into the church. Alden carried a processional banner featuring the Byzantine cross of Sts. Cyril and Methodius and an outline of the State of Texas with a bluebonnet and it proclaimed "Czechs and Moravians of Texas" and asked for Mary's help for the group.

Following the banner was Henry Gerlich carrying the flag of the State of Texas and he was flanked

by Agnes Reznicek and Anna King in original Moravian and Slovak kroji. It was estimated that over 800 people were in the official procession of the laity; most in krojs.

With the church overflowing (8500 can be seated), it is the 7th largest church in the world, the procession of clergy began, in attendance were 150 priests, 2 abbotts, and 6 bishops.

Bishop Morkovsky was principal celebrant for the day. Among the offertory bearers was Amos Pavlik, State KJT president, and music was again provided by the Lyme, Connecticut choir and the amassed congregation. Following the mass, the procession returned to the chapel for the closing rites of the 3day celebration.

LEROY FRANK KAMAS LeRoy Frank Kamas, 69 years old, died Saturday, March 5, 1983, at Southwest Memorial Hospital in Houston. Services were held at Davis Funeral Chapel in Rosenberg March 7, with Father Ladd Danek and Father Rachunek officiating. Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery.

LeRoy was born September 16, 1913, in Nelsonville, Texas, and was the son of William and Frances Kamas. He received his bachelor's degree from Sam Houston State and his master's degree from the University of Houston. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy.

During LeRoy's early career he taught at Central School near Wallis and at Orchard. Later he worked as an accountant in Houston and Lake Jackson and then returned to teaching in Needville. LeRoy also worked as a ln accouritant

income tax, was a farmer, real estate agent, and a sales representative for SPJST Lodge 81. He was a member of American Legion Post 271 of Rosenberg.

Survivors include his widow, Mildred Sebesta Kamas of Needville, Texas; a son, Larry Kamas, of Rosenberg, Texas; a daughter, Loretta Goldsmith, of Katy, Texas; two grandchildren, Amanda Goldsmith and James Goldsmith, Jr. of Katy, Texas; and one sister, Margaret Pollock of Rosenberg.

Graveside services for Mr. Zook were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 29 at Moffat Cemetery, west of Temple, with full military honors, with Chaplain Price and Col. Bill Byrd officiating. Scott's Funeral Home in Gatesville was in charge.

Mr. Zook was born in El Paso, the son of Herbert D. and Patricia Zook.

He married Carolyn McCutcheon on April 19, 1966 in Belton.

Mr. Zook resided in Bell County from 1957 to 1978 when he moved to Fort Gates. He served in Vietnam from 1966 to 1967 and from 1968 to 1969. He received the Navy Commendation Medal with a Combat Victory Medal for Meritorious service. He served in the National Guard as a member of the 949th Maintenance Battalim, 49th Armored Division.

Mr. Zook was a life member of the National Guard Association of Texas. He was an instructor for the NCO Academy of the State of Texas and the U.S. Army Reserve. He was also employed by the mobilization and training equipment site near Gatesville.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Belton.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Zook of Fort Gates; one son, Todd Zook; two daughters, Suzanne Zook and Debbie Zook, all of Fort Gates; one brother, Dwight Zook of Belton; one sister, Pat Zook of Atlanta, Ga.; and his father, Herbert Zook of Las Vegas, Nevada.

He was born Nov. 17, 1912, in Burleson County, the son of Charles and Alice Theuber Wotipka.

Bro. Wotipka was a farmer and rancher and had lived in Burleson County in the San Antonio Prairie Community all his life. He attended the Caldwell Brethren Church and was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 186 of Caldwell.

He was married to Lillie Polasek Kramer January 27, 1951, in the Caldwell Brethren Church Parsonage by the late Rev. H. E. Beseda Sr. Survivors include his wife, Lillie Wotipka of Caldwell; four sons, Johnny Krammer and daughter-inlaw Grace of Caldwell, Alvin Joe Wotipka and daughter-in-law Brenda of Caldwell, Edward Charles Wotipka and daughter-in-law Anna of Caldwell, and Ray Wildon Wotipka of Caldwell; and one sister, Mrs. Mildred Farmer of Caldwell.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers.

Mr. Plasek was born February 5, 1900, in Washington County and was the son of John and Anna Stepan Plasek.

Brother Plasek was a World War II veteran, a farmer at Porter's Chapel Community in Burleson County until he became a resident of the Hennesey Nursing Home in the last three years of his life. He joined the SPJST at the age of sixteen; therefore, he has been a member for 67 years.

Funeral Services for Mr. Plasek were held Sunday, June 5, 1983, at the Phillips & Luckey Funeral Chapel in Giddings and he was buried at Porter's Chapel Community Cemetery in Burleson County.

Officiating at the services was Rev. Fred Mgebroff of the Martin Luther Lutheran Church of Giddings.

Brother Plasek was preceded in death by his parents, stepmother, two brothers and two sisters.

He is survived by three sisters, Miss Florence Plasek of Dallas, Mrs. Joe (Tonie) Matejcek of Giddings, Mrs. Alice Thompson of Dallas and two brothers, Edward Plasek of Houston and Robert Plasek of San Antonio.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, and had lived in Victoria for 15 years. He transferred from Lodge No. 93, Hobson on February 28, 1979.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lillie (Shortner) Schramek of Victoria; a daughter, Shirley Swenson of Pearland; a son, Robert Schramek of Victoria; a sister, Lillie Rab of West Columbia; and four grandchildren.

Sis. Laznovsky was born August 25, 1910 in Scurry, Texas, the daughter of Frank and Frances (Kubin) Kohn. November 22, 1932 she was married to Frank Bob Laznovsky of Creechville. After their marriage they lived in the Bardwell Community. Bro. Laznovsky preceded her in death November 21, 1980. She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church.

She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Ronald Dent and Mrs. Dan Svehlak of Ennis and Mrs. Doris Brock of Mesquite; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; one brother, Jerry Kohn of Dallas; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Bouska of Ennis and Mrs. Velma Allison of Dallas; several nieces and nephews.

A case is the form which shows, the function of a noun, adjective, or pronoun, in the sentence, and its relation to other words in the sentence. There are seven such cases in the Czech language.

14/VESTNIK-20. cervence 1983 1. NOMINATIVE, or subject case: prvni pad — answers the questions: KDO — who? (is the doer of, or subjected to, some action?); CO -what? (lifeless object or event is something said about?)

Ex: KDO tam chodi? Karel tam jde.

Here Karel is in the nom. case. Co se tam deje? Schime se tam kona. Here schfize is in the nom. case.

GENITIVE Case — druhy pad, has a function similar to the English possessive case, (my friend's house, or the house of my friend). The genitive has acquired a wide range of meaning besides the basic sense of BELONGING. It answers the questions: aeho? of what?, af? whose?

Ex.: Z eeho je to vyrabene litiny. a z Zeleza Ze Cf je to pueik? Je to pueik meho otce. (Otce, here is in the gen. case).

3. DATIVE Case — ti-eti pad, is primarily a case of direction marking end or result towards which an act proceeds. It is therefore used after the verbs GIVING, SENDING, SAYING, or WRITING something to someone. It answers the questions KOMU?, to whom?, and CEMU?, to what?

Ex: Komu piles? PIS‘u domu tatinkovi. (Tatikovi here is in the dative case). Cemu poslouchaS Posloucham vysilaci stanici. (Stanici is in the dative case).

4. ACCUSATIVE, Or Direct object case — etvrty pad; marks the receiver of the action or the thing acted upon by the subject. It answers the questions: KOHO? whom?, and CO what?

Ex.: Koho's tam videl? Vidal jsem tam metro pfitele. (pfitele is in the acc. case).

(Continued from Page 11) assembled pilgrims in front of the Shrine's entrance. A procession of the folklore groups then proceeded to the lawn on the eastern side of the Shrine for the afternoon activities.

Throughout the afternoon, the visitors were entertained by the following groups with song and dance: Greater Cleveland Sokol Dancers, Club Moravan (Endicott, New York); "Club Domov" (Chicago); Moravian "Omladina" (Chicago); and "Limbora" Slovak, Dancers (New York). During the intermission, the thousands enjoyed the music of the Pilsner Brass Band from New York.

Near the "Wallachain Booth," the "Moravia Micro Band" played for singing and dancing throughout the afternoon - it, along with the "pivo wagon," was the hit of the Texas group as we joined many from Pennsylvania, New York, and Chicago singing the old-traditional folk-songs of the motherland. It was indeed a very tired but happy group of Texans who returned to the hotel that night.

Monday, the Klub Kontinental group gathered early to begin a tour of Washington before the afternoon flight home. Among the sights seen were following: Embassy Row, the White House, Ford's Theatre, Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, Washington Monument, a guided tour of the U.S. Capitol, Arlington Cemetery, and the Iwo Jima Memorial of World War II. Enjoyed by all was the luncheon break at the Crystal City Underground Mall which featured 15 restaurants clustered around an outdoor garden. As the group departed for their home destinations San Antonio, Dallas or Houston, we realized that indeed close friendship had been made and there was a spirit of comradeship among the group. It was evident to all who had participated, that we had been part of a one-time event which we can never forget and indeed we had the privilege of glimpsing into "Czech Heaven!"

Among the large number of Texans attending the 3-day event, SPJST was well-represented by members of the following lodges: West, Waco, Victoria, San Antonio, Dallas, Fort Worth, East Bernard, Hallettsville, Austin and Houston.
