West Takes First in Corpus Christi Parade

Best Band in AAA .

West Trojan band members found Corpus Christi to their liking as they captured first place in Class AAA at the Buccaneer Days Parade April 30th.

Being the smallest in their nine school class did not stop the Trojans from taking top honors at Corpus Christi. Along with being the smallest school, West also had other obstacles to cross along the way to winning.

Halfway through the four mile parade, West Band Director Jack Felts explained, a parade official came up to him and said the band was behind and would have to hurry up or it would be disqualified from the parade competition.

The band then ran two blocks, so they would not be disqualified, Felts said. Following the parade, he said, the band members "just conked out and went to the bus.

The band director said when word got back to them about their winning, the members "came alive" and started yelling and celebrating.

"Just fantastic" were the words Felts used to describe their trip. "I was proud of the way they represented the city (West) and school."

Felts also was impressed with the band members conduct during the three day trip. All the sponsors

agreed, he said, that the kids (band members) are the greatest in the world.

Along with their winning in Corpus Christi, the band was well received at a concert at Elgin High School. The band had a "great concert" and got a standing ovation from the Elgin students, he added.

Lodge 183 "Mid-Cities", Arlington The officers and members of Lodge 183 "mid-Cities", Arlington plan to hold an open house and dedication of their newly-acquired building in their city Saturday, September 24th. All members of the SPJST in neighboring and distant lodges are invited to attend. There will be additional details in the coming weeks.

Pay no attention to the manufacturer's suggested list price, since it may have no relationship at all to the actual selling price. On a voluntary basis, postal carriers in many towns are helping keep a friendly eye on elderly and handicapped customers on their routes. As a part of a program called Carrier Alert, carriers are watching the mailboxes of senior citizens and handicapped people who seek the service. If mail begins to accumulate in a box, the carrier notifies a local organization — such as the American Red Cross or United Way — which then investigates. One way to hold down the cost of auto insurance, advises the New York State Consumer Protection Board, is to raise the amount of deductible costs you are willing to pay before the insurance company assumes financial responsibility.

That can lower monthly premiums without injuring the basic purpose of auto insurance — to cover losses you can't afford to-absorb.-

Fraternal Affairs Dear Readers: Good things are happening, and bighearted SPJST members are opening their hearts to the needs of Texas abused and neglected children, as is evidenced by the following act, which was brought to my attention by Ms. Harolyn Moreau, of the McLennan County Children's Protective Services and Vice President Bernie Gebala.

Ms. Moreau needed immediate help to set-up a "Food Closet" similar to the one in Bell County and other areas throughout the state. This supply of food would be available to help children on weekends, who come to her needing food and shelter when the DHR workers were off work. She needed unperishable food such as canned meat, vegetables and other staples.

Our Society's new Child Abuse and Neglect project had not been taken to that area's lodges, but the need was urgent.

Ms. Moreau contacted Brother Gebala who suggested she contact Sister Jeanette Smith of Lodge 66. Sister Smith responded immediately by calling her friends, Sister Anna Vernetti, Sister Annie Hanus and Sister Bonnie Pruitt. They agreed to donate canned foods they had and cash to buy extra items. A large box of food was delivered to the shelter, and Sister Smith reported that the people there were very appreciative and surprised at how much they had given on such short notice. These generous sisters have pledged their help and support in the future.

Sister Smith wrote, "I was very happy, as were the others, to have been able to help such a worthy cause, to help those persons less fortunate than most of us."

Thank you, dear ladies from the Waco area, for responding to the needs of these children and their families. It is the hope of the entire Supreme Lodge that this is just the beginning of the response our membership will give to the new Child Abuse and Neglect project.

Sister Willie Mae Schuetz gave the youth club report. She said several youth members went to District III YAD and received several first, second and third places. We are very proud of all of you. Good luck to the ones who will be going to State. Everyone is getting ready for the picnic. The youngsters will be selling tickets for an ice cream freezer to be given away at the picnic. Kevin Dobecka brought the birthday cake.

The Board of Trustees report was given by Brother Aubrey Uptmor.

The sewer lines have been repaired.

We want to thank the members who worked on the lines for the hardwork they did. The membership asks everyone's help in any way they can at the annual picnic. The Therese Dobecka Scholarship Fund was discussed. The membership voted to make a contribution to the Therese Dobecka Scholarship Fund; the amount will be decided at a later date.

The $10 door prize drawn was Louise McKinney, second $10 prize drawn was Mary Pavlas, $3 progressive door prize was for Doris Haberal, and the $2 door prize was won by Willie Mae Schuetz.

The next Board of Trustees meeting will be Friday, July 29 at 8 p.m. and the regular meeting will be Friday, August 5, 1983 at 8 p.m.

I want to thank my mother-in-law, Lydia Dobecka for writing my report for the June meeting because I was in Dallas attending the Southern District Slet of Sokol.

Please remember our picnic is Sunday, July 17, 1983. We will be working at the hall Friday and Saturday before the picnic. Anyone who can help at the picnic is welcome. Everyone try to come out and make this event a very successful picnic. I hope to see everyone there.

Dear Readers: Our last monthly meeting was held June 19, 1983 in Dime Box. President Claude Flippin called the meeting to order at approximately 2:10 p.m.

The recitation of the Pledge of July Allegiance followed, led by Flagbearer Penny Spitzenberger.

The Lodge No. 13 in Dime Box was offered an oil lease agreement

by Brother Riney Spacek. A discussion was held and it was decided that the land be leased to the Bar-S Corporation at $100 an acre with 20 percent of the royalties for 2 years.

A discussion was then held on the bar being open at private affairs.

After much discussion a conclusion was made that: during a private party if the bar is open NO more beer will be allowed into the hall; all drinks must be bought from the bar.

Youth Leader Marlene Strong invited everyone to come to the Youth Achievement Day in Caldwell for June 26th, 1983. Our youth members did a Beseda Dance and they will advance to the State competition in August, 1983. The youth did very well in the district competition. There will be a few of the members who will advance to the State competition, also. We want to wish the youth members the best of luck!

We also had two youth members and their duke and duchess representing us in Royalty competition; namely, King Barry Gold with Duke Richard Spacek, Queen Pam Spitzenberger, along with her Duchess Monica Spitzenberger.

Both Barry and Pam did very well in this competition. Pam and her duchess, Monica Spitzenberger will advance to the State competition September 17, 1983 in Elgin, Texas.

To help these youth members out with expenses, the lodge gave the Royalty candidates $25 and their duke and duchess $10; this money was greatly appreciated by all four members, to know that they were being supported by their mother lodge.

The youth club was reimbursed $75 for the cleaning of the hall after their annual youth club dance. The reimbursement was because the youth were also helping us earn money so why should the youth club have to pay for something that has helped us out, too.

Being that there was no further business, the drawing was held for door prizes; winners were: 1st-Mary A. Tisdel, 2nd-Nellene Spacek, 3rdPam Spitzenberger.

The meeting was then adjourned

40 Had Successful Meeting/ Fellowship Lodge

Dear Vestnik Readers and Friends: The monthly meeting of the El Campo-Hillje Lodge 40, was held Wednesday, June 15, 1983 at 6:30 p.m. at the Kutac Kamp and thanks to the generosity of Martha and Al Kutac. (Thanks to both of you for your kindness.) It was an enjoyable evening of fellowship and fun for all.

A short meeting was called and we welcomed four new members.

The youth group also held a meeting and discussed their upcoming trip, YAD and summer camp.

A covered dish supper with fried chicken catered by Staff's was served following the meetings.

It was so good to see a great turnout by members and their families.

We hope to have more family days in the future.

Remember members, we are now having Bingo Monday nights; come out and bring a friend.

Meeting Set For Lodge 66

Dear Members: Lodge 66 will hold the monthly meeting at Linden Hall at 2:30 p.m.

July 17th and the youth club will meet at 1:30 p.m.

Afterwards, the lodge will serve drinks and ice-cream and the ladies of our lodge are asked to bring cookies or cake.

74 Celebrated 10th Anniversary

Lodge

Once again the members and guests enjoyed another fun-filled day at Lovelady Lodge 74. Our 10th anniversary and Fourth of July was enjoyed by everyone who attended.

As usual, our Youth Leader Linda Michka and helpers did an outstanding job with the youth program. All past officers and trustees were recognized and remembered for their work in Lodge 74. Also, all the present officers, along with the trustees, were recognized and appreciation was shown for their work in Lodge 74.

We enjoyed the Beseda dancers; namely, Jennifer West, Scott Listiak, Kathy Listiak, Toby Roberts, Sherry Michka, Eric Driskell, Diana Fairchild and Jody Roberts. Their Czech costumes were beautiful. All the youth members displayed much talent which was enjoyed by all attending our celebration; the program ended with the grand march. The youth club had a display of their crafts which showed us they have really been working.

We will have pictures soon of our activities.

In attendance we were pleased to have Ruth and Louis Kohutek from Seaton Lodge 47 visit with us and wish us well on our 10th anniversary; other well-wishers who couldn't be with us were Charlie and Pearl Landrum of Lake Palestine who called to say "Happy Anniversary"! The Landrums donated our water fountain when our lodge was first built. Because of poor health, they cannot participate anymore, however, we haven't forgotten them.

Alice and Rudy Hafner sent a beautiful pot plant in remembrance of our 10th anniversary; as nearly everyone knows, Mr. Hafner was our first lodge president. He also built our lodge and he and Chester Shmoldas were responsible for the reactivation of Lodge 74.

Other presidents serving our lodge in the past include W. G. (Johnny) Johnston, Ralph Smith and presently, Lodge 74 President

James Wilcox who is serving his 4th term as president.

It was also noted, in the recognition of officers, that Treasurer Mary McInnis and Recording Secretary Creola Wilcox have both served in their respective offices for 6 consecutive terms.

We enjoyed the music by the Lone Riders and the Silver Dollar Band, also our delicious barbecue dinner which was catered from Smitty's Barbecue.

This letter wouldn't be complete if I didn't say "thank you" to the following members and friends who worked at one job or another during this day's activities; namely, Jake Crouch, W. C. Millwee, Mildred Shmoldas, Jackie Douthit, Irene Ball, Joan Ray, Jeff and Hazel Moore, Mary and Bill McInnis, Melvin Douthit, J. D. and Fern McCoullough, George and Peggy Tarver, Jasper Jennings and Tinnsee, Bill and Jane Frazier, Emma Maples, Hazel Millwee, Jerry Michka, also James and Creola Wilcox. 84 Czech Fest September 17-18 Lodge

Dear Members: All the Lodge 84 officers in Dallas extend a big welcome to all our members and friends to come to the Czech Fest that starts Saturday night, September 17 and ends Sunday, September 18 after the dance. Harold Strand will play from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and the Czech Harvesters will play Saturday night.

This may sound like a broken record, but it's true we are hoping to make another nice payment on the parking lot debt this year. This means we need everyone's full support. Right now is when we all can start preparing a lot of things for our booths. We plan to have a greenhouse that Sister Rose Scott will manage. The gift/canning booth will be manned by Evelyn Salac. The ceramics will be made and sold by Sisters Betty Olson and Wanda Petr; so why not give them your orders now, if you have anything special you want? There will also be a country store, so save some can goods for that and other booths.

I know many of you have green thumbs, so do grow some nice donations for the greenhouse. Since I am running the gift and canning booth, I have been busy canning pickles, peppers and dilled cabbage; all the little gardens are producing now, so please keep my booth in mind and can a few extras. Any handmade items will be appreciated very much.

My next request is: If any members have some quart or pint jars to spare or don't use, I sure do need some. Last week I had to buy a dozen quart jars and they were expensive; you can bring them to the lodge any time and leave them in the kitchen or Conference Room.

While I am writing this letter, I also want to mention the Teen Club Princess Dance for July 16th. We hope a lot of you can come and help support our youth. The Czech Harvesters will play.

Lodge 84 Dallas Softball Team Report

Dear Brothers and Sisters: It is about time I submit some results of our team's games that have been played starting with our game dating back to April 26th.

We played Campbell Insurance at Samuel's Diamond No. 1 and we won by a score of 9 to 5. Jim Dedmon was the winning pitcher allowing 4 hits, 4 strikeouts and 6 walks. Lionel Schulz also pitched the last 3 innings allowing 2 hits, no walks and 3 strikeouts.

Leading hitters were Tim Hays with a homerun, a triple and a single; Don Lennox made two doubles; Jerry Zabojnik earned a single and a walk; Ton Stites with 2 singles; Dan Palm, and Darrell Clements with singles; and Danny Yates had a walk.

Our next game wasn't played until May 24th because we had a whole month that our games were rained out. We played the Ice Machines Team and we won by a score of 8 to 0. Winning pitcher was Lionel Schulz who allowed 1 hit, no walks and 10 strikeouts.

Leading hitters were Don Jarma with a triple, a single and a walk; Danny Yates with a double, and a single; Randy Christian with 2 singles; Tim Hays with a homerun; Kerry Goad, Paul Bartos, Dan Palm and Darrell Clements with singles, and Mark Vrana with base-on-balls.

June 11th weekend, we played in the Fort Worth Tournament and we won two games and lost two for an enjoyable tournament. We played our first game that morning at 9 o'clock against Denton Auto Club.

We played for 11 innings before we finally won the game by a score of 6 to 5. Winning pitcher was Lionel Schulz who allowed 2 hits, 3 walks and 3 strikeouts, and received flawless support from the team afield.

Leading hitters in this game were Danny Yates with 2 doubles, and a single; Tom Stites with a triple, and a double; Randy Christian with a double, a single and a sacrifice; Tim Hays and Kerry Goad with doubles; Don Jarma with a single, and a walk; and Paul Bartos with a single.

We played our second game against McGregors of Wichita Falls and this was our time to win because we beat them by a score of 5 to 1.

Lionel Schulz hurled another fine game allowing 2 hits, 3 walks and 3 strikeouts.

Wednesday, July 13, 1983—VESTNiK/9 and a sacrifice, Tom Stites and Randy Christian with walks.

Game No. 3 was against the very strong Spring Creek Barbecue of Fort Worth and throughout the first 5 innings, we were leading them by a score of 2 to 1; and, then the roof caved in and we lost our first game in the tournament by a score of 10 to 1. Losing pitcher was Jim Dedmon, even though he deserved a better fate.

Our hitters were Jerry Zabojnik, Albin Vrana, Randy Christian, Danny Yates, Tom Stites and Tim Hays, all with single safeties.

After the game all of the players along with their wives went out to eat together which was a lot of fun.

We played our fourth and final game at 10:30 p.m. against TransCon of Dallas. Before the game even started, the umpire we had was lousy, he threw out one of our players for something he didn't even say; matter of fact, he never said a word, and the umpire was tired and grouchy, and throwing out our shortstop hurt our team's chance and team's morale.

We lost the game by a lopsided score of 14 to 3, but it was the principle of the whole matter because he wouldn't listen and made several bad calls throughout the game, the worst I have ever experienced in my 30 years with the team. I am not saying that we would have won, we didn't play too well, but such calls took all the fun out of the game.

We returned home to Dallas after midnight and our tournament play was ended. In my next report I have reports from the Waco Tournament and games from our League Play.

May I remind our readers and members to please attend the Teen Princess Ball for July 16th weekend, with the Czech Harvesters playing good music; you'll come!

John Sullivan's Orchestra entertained our lovely guests Saturday, July 2nd; this was the Fourth of July weekend and the attendance was not, as usual, overflowing when John Sullivan stars on our stage, but fair. The ladies came beautifully dressed as this was a dress-code dance. In charge of the evening was Rita Alexander, dressed in a becoming black gown; her husband, Entertainment Chairman Homer Alexander was at her side. Irene Slovacek, in a lemon-yellow gown occupied the box office and her sister, Erna O'Connor, at the door, in black lace, greeted the guests. It was a nice dance and the music was wonderful.

In the Blue Room I met a very nice couple for the first time; namely, Roger and Jo Ann Kerr, who were celebrating their 27th wedding anniversary that day. They took their wedding vows July 2, 1956 and have two children to be proud of: one daughter, Terri; and son, Wayne.

Nat, our bartender, went out of the way to mix special drinks for this lovely couple. Congratulations and many more! (In the conversation some of us questioned Nat about his name and wanted to know what it

really stands for; we call him "Net," "Nate," "Nath" and so on, so we finally found out it is spelled "NATIVIDAD" in short "NAT" and we all are satisfied and wonder no more; being with us so many years: 16, 17 or 18, he knows his customers and knows what they like.)

The nice couple, Henry and Adele Kite, have four children; three daughters and one son and several grandchildren, but this miracle the last grandson born May 4, 1983 and weighing 9 lbs. and 15 ozs. was a gift to their daughter, Sharon, and sonin-law, Tonny Grabarkwitz, after being married 15 years to welcome their first born named Branch Grabarkwitz. Special congratulations to the blessed parents and grandparents Henry and Adele Kite. At this dance Adele celebrated her birthday among her friends wishing her many more.

Lately, Annie Green had many out-of-town weekend guests, David Krischke with wife, Pam; and son, Taylor Sachary of Lubbock, Texas Tech; and, now expecting Pat and Herbert Krischke and son, Mike. If I am not mistaken they all had a wonderful Fourth of July weekend.

Grandparents, George and Elsie Kadera, were blessed with their third grandson, Jordon, born June 27, 1983 weighing 9 lbs. and 12 ozs. to their daughter, Frances and sonin-law, Travis Waugh of Sulphur Springs, Texas. (With three sons, the oldest Justin, the middle one Jason and now Jordan, mother Frances will have her hands full.)

Congratulations to the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents, Frank and Frances Dvorak.

Fourth of July, the 207th year of our Independence was celebrated in many different ways around the country. At our lodge a group of loyal members gathered on our beautiful picnic grounds surrounding the olympic-size swimming pool with youngsters cooling off diving and swimming while others milled around relaxing in our beautiful gazebo with comfortable seating and plenty of delicious food. It was a very hot day, but the huge shady trees with branches over the gazebo made it nice and cool to enjoy the afternoon.

If you weren't there, you don't know what you missed. It was a friendly relaxed atmosphere to enjoy. Be sure and make it next year.

Sister Ida Hanka, residing in the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Needville, Texas, spent the Fourth of July weekend with her grandson here in Houston.

Jan Garber orchestra will be with us Saturday, July 23rd; reservations are available in the lodge office or at Saturday night dances. This is a dress-code dance.

Parita, Members Meet La

Lodge 161 of Jourdanton held their regular meeting June 12, 1983

at the Three Oaks Cafe in Pleasanton, Texas.

The minutes of the past meeting were read and approved as read.

There was no old or new business to discuss, so the meeting was then adjourned and all of us enjoyed a good meal. There were 17 members present.

Round Rock Lodge 187 Monthly Meeting June 19, 1983 The meeting was called to order by 1st Vice President Albert Lange in the absence of President Oman who was on vacation.

Arnold Leschber read a letter from Lodge 185 inviting everyone to a festival to be held in New Braunfels. Brother Leschber also read a letter from Norris Lawrence tendering his resignation for business and personal reasons.

Motion was made by Brother Leschber to accept his resignation, seconded by Bill Holman. Motion carried.

Leila Gainer made a motion to accept two new members, Kenneth Cox and Monica Marie Cox, seconded by Allene Leschber.

Motion carried. Welcome to both new members!

The youth club had all fathers present put their name in the hat for a $25 Father's Day gift from the youth club. Fred Kaus was our lucky father of the day.

We will have about 15 to 20 people riding in the Georgetown Sheriffs Posse Parade, June 23rd.

All members who have helped at the hall were invited to ride in the Round Rock Frontier Day Parade, July 9th. We will be taking two trailers that day and everyone should meet at the Old Settlers Park about 3 p.m.

The Sundowner Lounge has been closed after a vote by the membership to do so. It will now be used as a Private Party Room.

Sharon Holman presented the youth club report. July 20th the youth club will have a swim party at the home of Bill and Sharon Holman and in August a trip to Astroworld is planned. The youth are also planning to attend YAD activities July 17 at Cyclone.

Nominations were opened for the two vacancies created on the board.

Nominees were as follows: Lyman Larson, Ed Volek, Henry Wobus and Larry Rohlack. Ed Volek and Henry Wobus were elected.

Lillie Mae Richter's name was drawn for the door prize but was not present to win. Allene Leschber won the two courtesy tickets.

Next general meeting will be July 24 instead of July 17 due to YAD being held that day. A covered dish supper will follow the 4 p.m. meeting.

It was' brought to everyone's attention that Brother Albert Schroeder had recently been inathe hospital for bypass. Our prayers for a speedy recovery are with him and Nadine.

The meeting was adjourned and a delicious supper was enjoyed by all.

Teacher Wins "Teacher of the Year" Award It is always a pleasure to report the accomplishments of any SPJST member. In this instance it is about a very nice relative of mine, Mrs. Venus Marek Sharp of Placedo Lodge No. 97. She received the 1983 Athene "Teacher of the Year" award and a bouquet of roses, that was presented by Mrs. Valeria A. Cook, committee chairman, at the Annual Athene Presidential Dinner held at Leo's Feedlot Restaurant in Victoria.

Mrs. Sharp has retired after being a teacher for 28 years. Her career started at William Wood School in the Wood-Hi Community of Victoria County. The rest of her teaching years were spent at the Placed() Elementary School, Placedo, Texas.

She and her husband, M. L. Sharp, have three children; Marsha Sharp of Austin; Mark Sharp of Victoria and John Sharp, also of Victoria.

Mrs. Sharp, Marsha and John are members of Placedo Lodge No. 97.

(The Kubala family is known to me since 1939 when her father Allan's sister, Vlasta, married her boyfriend John Majek, who farmed with his parents and four brothers in the Pettibone community and in the ginning season he worked for me at that gin in 1939.

Our family, as good friends, attended the wedding; it was in the Kubala's home on the farm near Corn Hill and Leo Majek, Sr. furnished the music with his sons.)

Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz congratulated everyone for doing so well at YAD. Darrell Uptmor is Teen of the Year at District III level and Kevin Dobecka is Junior of the Year also on District III level. Karen Hykel placed first runner-up as District III Queen and Terry Hykel scored third as King of District III. In addition there were several first place winners in craft division.

We held a card contest for Fourth of July and they were all interesting and well prepared.

We need everyone's help at our annual picnic to work in the games' stands.

Melissa Mynar has a birthday in July. Kevin Dobecka brought the cake and Tammi Dobecka will bring the next month's birthday cake.

LODGE 186, CALDWELL YC NEWS Our youth club held its meeting June 12. It was called to order by Secretary Vicki Brinkman.

There were 6 members and 2 guests present.

Vicki Brinkman led the Pledge of Allegiance.

At the meeting we discussed things for Youth Achievement Day. Vicki Brinkman is the only participant this year. But next year we plan to have more.

The Social for this month was going to Astroworld. We took 2 adults. (Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Brinkman) and 5 members and 3 visitors. We would also like to thank Mr. and Mrs. E. D. Perry for the use of their van to get us to and from Houston. We really appreciate our lodge members who stand behind the Youth Club.

MEMBERS WIN MANY AWARDS Dear Readers, District III YAD was held June 26th at Lodge 25 in Ennis. Lodge 84 submitted many entries and were delighted by their many winnings.

Both our Junior and Teen Beseda circles will be going to State YAD, which will be Sunday, August 21 at Temple High School.

Other first place winners from the Teen group were: Lisa Reznik in Hobby Kits in (13-14), Sally Manak in Home Arts in (15-17).

We had five winners for the highest points; namely, Vicki Gerlich — 1st; Richard Andreason — 2nd, Larry Petr — 3rd, Paul Manak4th; Lisa Reznik, 5th.

Richard Andreason and Michelle Connor represented our lodge as king and queen contestants. Richard received first runner-up and Michelle received second runner-up. Congratulations to both of you!

Everyone had an enjoyable time and I, like many, cannot wait until camp July 23rd through July 26th. I hope to see many familiar faces there.

NEW TABOR YC ATTENDS DISTRICT I YAD Dear Readers, We had our YAD June 26th at Lodge 186 and it was a lot of fun, also at YAD they had two groups performing the Beseda dance; the Junior and Senior groups performed in front of the audience because they didn't compete in the contest, however, they will compete and try to win at State level.

There were a lot of contestants competing for individual and group talents and I could see the judges had a tough time deciding for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places.

In Royalty there were 3 kings competing and John Rychlik, president of Lodge 17 Youth Club won, with his Duke Chris Beasley; and out of four queens, Penny Spitzenberger was selected ,Distriet

JIM WESLEY MATLOCK who passed away May 3, 1983 at the age of 82 in St. Joseph Hospital Houston.

Brother Matlock was a retired farmer from Beasley, and was a recent resident of Blalock Nursing Home in Pasadena. He was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Beasley.

Funeral services were held Thursday, May 5, 1983, at 10 a.m. at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Beasley with Father Henry Rachunek officiating. Burial in the West Gethesemane Cemetery in Rosenberg.

Survivors include five daughters, Mrs. William G. (Frances) Denton of Houston, Mrs. Norma E. (Amelia) Tofte of Pasadena, Mrs. Rosie Rejesk of Fresno, Mrs. Stanley (Annie Mae) Rejesk of East Bernard, Mrs. Johnnie (Helen) Heimann of Rosenberg; two sons, James Matlock of Rosenberg and Ernest J. Matlock of Dime Box; one sister, Mrs. Antonia Abschnider of Beasley; 21 grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren.

Kovarna byla na spadnutf, tak jsem ji zboural o postavil novou. M po pristehovanf jsem vyna.gel jakou velkou chybu jsem udinil. Ten obchod, kterY mel Sebesta se prestehoval k Mikulatikovi v tu dobu guvernerem byl Jim Ferguson, ktery nechal zbudovat novou silnici, mezi Temple a Rosebud, jen vedla pies osady obydlene naginci a Nemci, Seaton, Zabeikville a Cyclone.

Toto efslo 47., ktere postupne bylo zanaseno do spolkovych knih Hlavnf dradovny a to jmeno jako zakladatele si dali do gtitu. Cinf sve poslanf sin je zvetgena o zrnodernisovana.". My si zabrali prazdne mist° u prazdneho stolu, kde jsem dal dovezeny vynalez cassette, nahravat jednacf program.

Tam byl muj prvni tanec v Americe. gefeici a Poborile byli peibuzna vzdalenejgf rodina. nos privitat jeden po druhem dva broth', ktere jsem neznal; Albert (71 rokri) a Mathers Cabla (73 rokri) v Temple. To jsou synove po Janu Cablovi z druheho manielstvf. Jan Cabla vdovec se pfistehoval z Moravy do Temple, Texas v roku 1906 se

svYmi syny Josefem (14 roku), Jaroslav (12 roku} a dcera Josefa (116 roku) v Kalifornii). Nejstar gi syn Jindrich uti byl tady v Texasu. Otec techto dal se otienil podruhe, kdyi rodina (6 Mend) Svobodovd se pristehovala z Moravy, nekdy okolo roku 1907 nebo 1908. child abuse money was reduced from $22.9 million to $16.2 million. Congressional appropriations have maintained fiscal 1983 funding at the 1982 level.

For fiscal 1984 the Administration wants to cut funding for the federal child abuse program to $6 7 million - a 41 percent reduction in funding.

Funds for Title XX, the major federal program of support to states for social services, were cut by 23%, from $2.9 billion, in fiscal 1982. In the current 1983 fiscal year $2.45 billion has been appropriated. Assistance under Title XX goes to the core services needed to help families under pressure: protection for abused children, and daycare and homemaker services that can prevent child abuse.

State and Local Child Abuse Services Cuts in federal and state funds for child abuse prevention and treatment services have been felt first at the administrative level, resulting in layoffs in staff in order to keep service programs, but state and local governments have been forced to prioritize services to be able to continue funding protective services for children. As a result, daycare and other child abuse preventive services have often taken the largest cuts.

In many states that face reductions in staff and increases in reporting of abuse, attention to children is prioritized based on the severity of abuse. Smaller numbers of staff cannot handle the increased reports of child abuse if all cases were seen as before. In some states neglected children are given little or no attention. Others are considering redefining, in response to reduced budgets, the types of reported child abuse that would be attended to. For example, children of school age or children over age 12 would not generally be considered endangered.

Increased Reports of Child Abuse Between 1976 and 1981 reports of child abuse nationwide have increased by 106%. At the same time that states are experiencing increases in reports of child abuse in some places children are being abused more severely than in the past and increased reports of deaths related to child abuse have been noted.

A telephone survey of all fifty states conducted in the fall of 1982 by the National Committee for Prevention of Child Abuse showed that the numbers of abused children in 45 states had increased over the past year. Thirty-three of the fifty states said that they were seeing more serious cases of abuse and slightly more states reported an increase in sexual abuse. One-fourth of the states nationally identified an increase in child abuse-related deaths.

Texas Texas reports an increase in 1982 in more serious forms of abuse to children. The average number of monthly cases in the first four months of 1982 compared with the Child Abuse Fact Sheet monthly average in 1981 went up by National Child Abuse 3.6 percent, while the number of -Coalition children in the most severe category Federal Child Abuse Effort of abuse - those whose lives were In FY (Fiscal Year) 1982 federal-- endangered - rose over 10 percent.

Apparently, sohte insurance companies assume bigness will be the key to their survival.

In our opinion, that's a faulty assumption.

Witness the dinosaur. Being big didn't save him. In fact, it probably hastened his demise.

For the dinosaur grew too large for his limited brain. As a result, signals took too long to get from one part of the body to another. In the end, he simply couldn't respond quickly enough to change.

The real issue — then and now — is flexibility. Adapting to a changing, often confusing, environment.
