He joins 57 board members chosen primarily from the Central Texas area.

Gebala is a retired recruiter for the U.S. Air Force. He was in charge of recruiting for Bell, Coryell and Lampasas counties.

He is a member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Luke's Catholic Church in Temple and the Temple Junior College Advisory Board. He also has served as a member of the Temple Centennial Commission and the Czech Heritage Day Commission.

Gebala formerly was announcer for KTEM-Radio's "Czech Melody Hour."

Chartering of New East Texas Lodge No. 191 Change In Date

Because of a scheduling conflict, the newly-organized East Texas Lodge No. 191 will hold their chartering ceremonies Sunday, July 24th, at 2 p.m. The lodge was officially organized (election and installation of officers) in Lufkin April 11th. The chartering had previously been scheduled for July 17th. The ceremonies will be held in the Lufkin Civic Center. SPJST members, their friends, and interested persons are cordially invited to attend.— NAM

CHARCOAL GRILLS. If it rains on your picnic, don't be tempted to move your charcoal grill indoors, warns the American Council on Science and Health. Burning charcoal releases substantial amounts of carbon monoxide, a colorless and tasteless gas that can be extremely deadly in enclosed spaces such as campers, tents or poorly ventilated rooms. ***

ARTIFICIAL HAIR IMPLANTS. Contrary to advertised claims, the expensive practice of implanting artificial hair fibers into bald heads is dangerous and ineffective, the Food and Drug Administration has ruled. It has banned sale of such fibers for scalp implants. The FDA has had more than 300 complaints that the implants caused infection, facial swelling, severe pain, scarring and permanent loss of remaining real hair. The ban also applies to some natural materials, such as human hair processed for implantation on another's head. ***

AIRLINE FIRES. It is .worth noting that the 23 passengers and crew members who survived the fire on board the Air Canada plane that made the emergency landing in Cincinnati on June 2 took two safety steps: They all held some kind of wet cloth or paper — supplied by the stewardesses — over their faces, and they all leaned over and put their heads between their legs.

These actions helped protect against deadly inhalation of smoke and superhot air. It's not known yet what actions were taken by the 23 passengers who died in the fire.

For example, cyclists should drive with the flow of traffic — not against it — to give both motorist and - cyclist more time to take evasive action in case of a sudden hazard. ***

Dear Members: The July meeting will not be held the first Sunday. The holiday rule, on meetings, applies since Fourth of July falls on the first Monday making it a holiday weekend. The meeting will be held the second Sunday, July 10th.

The dance will begin at 6 p.m. and we will have the Vanek Polka Band and Plain Country. General admission will be $2 for all over 12.

We will have a country store, cake walk, kolache booth, beer garden, auction and the youth club will have a wheel-of-fortune and face painting.

We will have something different this year; all the officers and the various chairmen will wear red vests that are trimmed with blue and will have the SPJST emblem on the left side. These are being made by yours truly and think that they will add greatly to our festival.

Today, June 20th, I did an enjoyable thing, I called up my cousin, Joseph Charles Esterak of Smithville and wished him a happy 100th birthday. Cousin Joe may you have many more. He is a member of the Kovar SPJST Lodge.

Our next regular meeting will be held at Citizens National Bank at 8 p.m. The Youth Club Meets at 7:30 p.m.

Festival To Be Held July 10 By Victoria Lodge No. 32

Our last regular meeting was held June 1 at the Victoria County Electric Co-op Building.

Little Aaron Spears led the Pledge of Allegiance to the. Flag, which was followed by a moment of silence for our departed members.

President Mike Ahlstrorn called the meeting to order. All the officers were present.

The minutes of the last meeting were read by Secretary Adele fkmalson and the treasurer's report was read by Treasurer Evelyn Horelka. Both were approved as read.

After a very short business meeting, the meeting was turned over to General Chairman Ella Arnold. Our Czech Festival is to be held July 10 at the Victoria Community Center. The Festival Will be open to the public at 2 p.m. Supper will be served from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. This will consist of barbecue brisket with all the trimmings. We will have the Victoria Czech Singers, the South Texas Heritage Czech Singers from Corpus Christi and the

Dear Members and Friends, President Jerry Pechal presided at our regular monthly meeting Sunday, June 5 at what may have been the shortest meeting that he had ever conducted. The delicious food smells, coming from the kitchen, had something to do with it such as sausage, kraut and potatoes cooking by Woodrow and Gladys Marek and their numerous helpers for lunch was more than the average appetite could stand. It certainly all was very delicious.

Flagbearers Timothy Wilson and Daryl Kortis led us in the Pledge of Allegiance after which we all stood for a moment of silence in memory of our departed brother, Ed Reznicek.

May he rest in peace.

Visitors at this meeting included Marie Operman, Melissa Moore, granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Chupik, Reuben Richter and Freddie Schroeder.

All officers were present and gave their respective reports, as well as all chairpersons.

Correspondence consisted of a thank you note from the Ed Reznicek family; also, thank you notes from graduates David Pechal and Elden Zavodny for gifts received and a thank you note from Dorothy Bedrich for being remembered when she was in the hospital.

Dear Members: SPJST Lodge 66 held their meeting Sunday, June 19th, with Vice President Ray Orsag conducting the meeting.

The flags were presented by James Yates and Chris Owens.

Jimmie Warren led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance and Lodge Motto.

Visitors were Gladys and James Yates and Mrs. Linnie Johnson of Breckenridge. We were glad to have you and we hope you will come again!

For roll call, all officers were present, except President Gaidusek.

The May minutes were read by Sister Bonnie Pruitt which stood approved as read.

Sister Engelke, for correspondence, read a card from the Johnnie Gaiduseks who are visiting their daughter and family in Germany.

Sister Pruitt read a letter from Hill Country SPJST Lodge 185 about their Hill Country Polka Festival.

Board chairman, Brother Emil Hanus, had Sister Engelke read the minutes of the Wednesday night, June 1st Board of Trustees' meeting.

Entertainment Committee Chairman, Sister Shilling gave her report. For the social today, there will be sausage, cheese, crackers, chips, desserts and drinks will be served, also there will be a drawing for fathers after the meeting. She also read a thank you note from

exhibits there are to see, you just have to go there to really enjoy it.

There was a discussion on the condition of the dance floor. Brother Emil Hanus said there would be a special meeting of the Board of Trustees, after the meeting, to discuss it and decide what to do.

Sister Barbara Brem gave the youth club report. The club did very good on their Saturday night cake walk. The club donated $50 to the Libbie Parma Trust Fund. Sister Brem said one of the youth members, Karen Shelton, had graduated from La Vega High School with top honors also she was the valedictorian of her class.

Congratulations, Karen, we are all proud of you. The club would also have a drawing for fathers after the meeting.

Sister Jeanette Smith, chairman of the Welfare Committee, read thank you notes from Jeff Warhol, Light House for the Blind and Larry and Beverly Pankonien for donations sent to them. She also read names of those to receive donations for this month: 1. Young son of the Willie Rejceks with dental problems; 2. Rev. Theodore Greese very ill with cancer; 3. The Ben Nors family on the tragic loss of their 3-year-old son; 4. Brother Ray Talsma ill with cancer and also on the loss of his home in a fire.

It was voted to give each $50; for a total of $200 for the month of June.

The Caritas also need food donations, especially vegetables; if you have a lot and cannot use them all, they would appreciate getting the vegetables.

We are sorry to report that Sister Pauline Graberkavitz has been very sick and also William Kocurek.

Sister Tillie Mikeska had been in Polly Ryon Hospital at Richmond for several days, but is at home doing quite well. May all of you soon be on the road to recovery.

A new policy was issued to David Zwahr. We welcome you!

Refund checks were handed out and drawing for the attendance prizes took place next. Recipients were Sister Winnifred Susan and Sister Vlasta Nowotny.

We were happy to have with us Brother Louis Hanus, District V director, who commented on our beautiful and well-kept hall and to keep up the good work. Thanks again for your visit and come back to see us, again.

84 Prepares For Czech Fest

Dear Members: President Joe Ondrusek called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m., May 16th.

Secretary Salac gave the report of the last meeting, which was approved.

Reports were made by Vice President Ron Coker for entertainment and Youth Leader Bessie Petr for the youth club.

Brother Ben Jarma for the softball team thanked all for the dance support and invited all to attend a game or two during this season.

Brother Adolph Salac, House Committee Chairman, asked for help to clean the lodge yard as well as parking area for Wednesday, June 1st.

Special Committee report was made by Sister Evelyn Salac who thanked all for donations of baked items for the sale and also thanked Brother Sid and Sister Justine Pokladnik for the use of their space to sell all the goodies.

Brother Emil Petr reported on hall rental as well as on the Czech Culture Society, which is in full swing of plans for State Fair and Czech Day October 16,1983.

Sister Carlyn Ondrusek for the Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council reported that a covered dish dinner and meeting will be hosted by WOW to be held at Lodge 84, June 16th.

Our members who come should bring a dessert for this meal.

During the last two months many things have been happening and I failed to report them; some brought joy to our members, and some brought sadness into our midst.

In April our Sunshine Committee sent get well cards to Sister Donna Edmondson, Brother Jimmy Janousek, Brother Jim Durbin, Brother Larry Sadecky and Brother Emil Petr.

It was reported that Sister Bozena Vodecka passed away in a Chicago nursing home and was buried Saturday, April 23rd. Our sympathies are extended to the family.

In May sympathy cards were sent to Brother Raymond Dlabaj on the loss of his father; to Brother Bill and Sister Mary Sill on the loss of Bill's mother, Anna; to Brother and Sister John Bickle on the loss of John's brother, Chase Bickle. September 18th our Lodge 84 in Dallas will hold its Czech Fest. As usual, we will have an old-fashioned Czech dinner, many booths (donations are really needed for this once-a-year fund raiser). You will have three months to make or bake something. Our booths will be open during our Saturday, September 17th dance, with music by Czech Harvesters, so you might want to bring friends to enjoy the music as well as enjoy the various booths consisting of country store, gift shop, greenhouse, cake walk, ceramics, fish pond, and other interesting things and fun booths can be your enjoyment.

September 17th and 18th—Pastry will be needed for the dinner and cake walk, so please bear this in mind.

Sunday, September 18th — Harold Strand will play for an afternoon of dancing pleasure from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and, of course, during the afternoon enjoy company of many friends; support of this Czech Fest is a way of saying: "You are proud to be a part of this organization, there are so many of us who are!"

Circle these dates on your calendar: July 3rd—Dinner/Entertainment at Sokol Hall (Athletic Center) starting at 12 noon, with dinner being served.

July 16th—Czech Harvesters play for the Princess Ball at our lodge starting at 8:30 p.m.

August 6th—The Country Boys will play at 8:30 p.m. for dancing entertainment.

Special Committee: Sister Salac reported on the kitchen work done on rentals.

Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council enjoyed a successful meal and gettogether last Thursday. There will be NO meetings until September.

Brother Jarma reported for the Czech Culture Society; stating the Fair Day entertainment was getting top priority during their last meeting. He also reported on the ball club and asks members to share an evening of winning or losing whichever is the case.

Sunshine Committee is Dorothy Prasifka and Sister Lillie Jarma reported the following sympathy cards to Sister Annabelle Bubak who lost her husband, Brother John Bubak; to Brother Don and Sister Debby Jarma on the loss of Sister Debby's brother, John; to Brother Charlie Adamcik and family on the loss of brother, Edwin Adamcik; to Brother Monty and Sister Cindy Olson on the loss of Sister Olson's father, Edwin Adamcik; to the Mandak family on the loss of brother /father, Brother Johnnie Mandak.

September 18th it's the Czech Fest. President Ondrusek hopes everyone is prepared to come and also donations are so important.

He also announced the next lodge meeting will be July 18th at 7:30 p.m. He is so prompt because it's embarrassing to arrive during the committees' reports, also, he reminded all to attend the July 3rd dinner and dance at Sokol Hall on Greenville Avenue; all societies will be represented at this get-together.

Lodge No. 88 Monthly Meeting Held June 20, 1983

by the reading of the names of seven deceased members since the last meeting. The membership stood in a moment of silence as a memorial and tribute to these brothers and sisters.

Secretary Malak read the minutes of the May meeting and the communications received. Officers and committee chairmen gave their reports of activities during the past month.

Items of interest from these reports included such information as the Youth Club serving 98 guests at their Parents' Appreciation Dinner, the availability of tickets for the Jan Garber dance July 23rd, a Committee party to be held July 17th, Czech classes to begin Sept.

26th, and progress of the ceramic classes.

The Blue Room will feature a Happy Hour each Friday from 7:30 to 9:30. There will be a special "drink of the month", and all bar drinks will be served for $0.50 less during the Happy Hour. Let's all get together and enjoy these bargains and spend time visiting with our friends.

Our special events coordinator, Millie Manick has arranged for another trip to Vinton to the races, and a 4-day trip to Las Vegas in early September. If you are interested, be sure to contact her.

The District Youth Achievement Day for District V will be held at Lodge No. 88 July 10th. It is always interesting to see the beautiful crafts and watch the talents of our youth. Won't you try to attend?

A beautiful cake, decorated in honor of 10 of our members who have been apart of our Lodge for 50 years was served after the meeting.

The members who were honored, (each received a pin from President Pflughaupt) were Christine Kubena, Jerry Sebek, Lydia S. Jamail, Marie Kahanek, Helen Valcik, Louise Matela, H. W. Berger, Elizabeth Schiller, Frank Slovak, Willie Mae Powell. Congratulations to these wonderful members and their families.

Reported on the sick list were Jerry Ermis, Susan Schenbern, Lad Bily, Mary Faltesek, Shirley High, Annie Skavara and Agnes Pederson.

Also, Mr. Frank Siller was reported in Parkway Hospital and in need of at least three units of blood. Here is a way for us to show true brotherhood.

The list of new members for our Lodge for this month totalled 75, plus 3 social members and 7 members transferred in from other lodges.

Beverages served after the meeting were provided by Willie and Edna Wehring and Helen and King Hegwood, in honor of their anniversaries.

The regular monthly meeting of Lodge No. 88 was called to order at A lovely dance was held Saturday approximately 7:30 p.m. by night, June 18 with music by the President Larry Pflughaupt. Open- well-liked The Knights of Dixie ing item on the agenda was the orchestra to entertain the Saturday Pledge of Allegiance led by Flag night guests. It was, and usually is Bearer Vincent Hegwood, followed (with the Knights of Dixie), a dress

code dance, and the guests as usual, followed the rule of the house. In charge of this dance was Rosalee Kostom, with Ellen Miculka and Evelyn Vornsand at the door greeting the guests. Ed Miculka served in the box office while Bill Vornsand, with Tim Kostom, seated the guests. The ladies on the committee also complied and were dressed according to the rule of the house and, as usual, looked lovely.

At this dance Annie Green entertained her sister, Mary Doran, visiting from Denver, Colorado and she was expecting her other sister, Julia Herman, of Kansas City and Annie's daughter, Dorothy Herman, to spend a week to enjoy each other's company; they have plans to meet at Annie's ranch at Lovelady, Texas where they will meet with other members of the family and especially her last and only brother, Adolph Krenek, and his wife, Ladie.

Harry and Millie Wheeler, with Lee and Elois Flores, occupied their regular table and entertained newcomers, Dennis and Margie Banbach of Crosby, Texas, also Harry's and Millie's daughter, Sandra and son-inlaw, Harvey Michna of Schulenburg, Texas; hope you enjoyed the evening and come, again.

In the Blue Room (the twins) Irene Slovacek and Erna O'Conner had the pleasure to enjoy the company of their brother-in-law, Travis Rich of Austin, Texas here for the weekend.

Tim Kostom and I had the pleasure to meet Travis. I hope you enjoyed our Blue Room atmosphere and come, again.

Jimmie Kadlecek, son of Amos and Della Kadlecek, has been named president of the Jim Kadlecek Advertising, Inc. Congratulations, Jimmie!

Susan Schenburn, on crutches now after her car accident, wishes to thank everyone for their prayers, phone calls, get-well cards; she appreciates everyone's concern.

Gus and Ann Gerlich are home from a several-day trip, visiting with their granddaughter, Marion Eckstrom, and her husband, James, in Los Angeles, California. They also made a trip to Santa Maria, California, visiting relatives and continuing Gus's family tree research which he finds very interesting. Gus and Ann enjoyed this trip and family.

A family of five including Harry and his lovely wife, Mickey Rice, her brother, Roy and spouse, Vera Bucek, and sister, Olga Kurtz, winged for 5 days, to the heavenly surroundings of Hawaii, leaving May 16th and returning to Houston May 21st.

Our monthly meeting Monday, June 20th had a very nice attendance. Our 50-year members were honored with 50-year pins. Present were Jerry Sebek, Louise Matela, Elizabeth Schiller, Willie Mae Powell, and not present were Christine Kubena, Lydia Jamail, Marie Kahanek, Helen Valcik, H. W. Berger and Frank Slovak. President Larry Pflughaupt did the honors to pin the 50-year pins on them.

Besides the 50-year pins, flowers were presented to the sisters. After the meeting, a beautifully decorated cake, for this occasion, was served including the regular snacks served after each meeting.

A true fraternalist, Karla (Ctvrtnik) Kraft, age 90, passed away Friday, June 17, 1983. Services were held at 10 a.m. Monday in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Crosby, Texas, with Rev. Anthony G. Stredny officiating. She was laid to rest Monday at 10:30 a.m. in the Woodlawn Garden of Memories.

Surviving her are daughter, Helen Tepera and four grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, two brothers and four sisters. Karla (Ctvrtnik) Kraft, in her younger days, was well-known as a fraternalist and very active member at Lodge Stefanik No. 142. My sincere sympathy to the family.

From Lodge 92 Ft. Worth

Our regular monthly meeting was held June 12, 1983 with a very good attendance. Committee chairpersons gave their reports.

Birthday cards were sent to members attaining 65 or older during month of May. Get well cards were sent to members confined in hospitals and at home. Sympathy cards were sent to families of our departed members and friends.

Members reported being in hospitals recently: Brothers, J. C. Waters, John (Rusty) Kratky, Ben Cooper, Toliver Hausey and Sisters Margaret Kratky. We wish them a speedy recovery.

Congratulations to parents, Christie and Jimmie Gilcrease, on birth of son, Dustin Thomas. Proud grandparents are Mike and Helen Paprskar, also to Billy Koci and wife, on birth of son, Matthew Joseph.

Norma and B. J. McClendon, along with their 13-yr.-old son, were reported enjoying themselves in Germany on business and holiday trip.

107 Meeting & Meal At Bill Pavliska's Farm Lodge

Fun, food, games and more fun are in store for Lodge 107 members and youth club members plus their parents for July 3, 1983.

The lodge will hold their July 3rd meeting at the William Pavliska's river farm. We will move to the SPJST Hall in case the weather does not cooperate.

Maxine Pavliska and Polly Bayer are the Entertainment Committee so I know a good time is in store for everyone.

A covered dish meal will be served around 5 p.m. The party will

start at 2 p.m. The games are being kept a secret but everyone is guaranteed a good time.

Billy and Maxine are asking that besides the food, all are asked to bring lawn chairs and some card tables in case some lazy-bone may want to engage in some domino or card game.

Don't forget the date July 3rd; time-2 p.m. at the Pavliska's farm, signs will mark the road. See you at the river!

142, Houston Sets July 1st Meeting

Our monthly meeting was called to order Sunday, June 5 at 2 p.m. by Secretary Alice Jochen, and then the members stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

President Mary Ann Kieschnick was out of town and the members appointed Brother Sidon Tumis as temporary chairman to conduct the remainder of the meeting.

Roll call of officers and officers' reports were given.

We are sorry to report sick members, Maggie Cernoeh, Louis Masaryk and Julia Cosmair.

We regret that Marvin A. Kaase was absent to claim the $50 attendance prize, however, we did give a $5 consolation prize to Sister Libby Kovar. Door prizes went to David Kunkel, Sidon Tumis, Frieda Johlke and Mike Wilson.

The meeting adjourned at 3 p.m.

A delicious meal of barbecued brisket and trimmings was served to the members who were present; this was conducted by our Board Member Dennis Hermis.

Before I conclude my report, one can tell that summer has arrived at Lodge 142 because we have more of our members who have returned from exotic vacations; namely, Sister Rosie Tumis and her daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Bob Schleider and friends, Mary Jenkins and Marie Coffield just returned from a 10-day vacation to Hawaii; while there, they visited four islands: Oahu, Kauai, Maui and the big island Hawaii. Sister Rosie said that their trip consisted of many interesting tours, dinner shows and shopping sprees. Their highlight of the trip was a helicopter ride over Waimea Canyon and the spectacular view of the Na Pali Coast. We welcome them back home and we all know they have many happy memories.

Dear Members and Friends: It looks as if summertime has caught up with us.

Benny and I plan on leaving for a vacation Wednesday, so I thought I would put a reminder of our next meeting July 10 in the paper.

Brother Jerry and Sister Henrietta Milan arrived home safely late Saturday night from their vacation; they visited the Alvin

Polasek Foundation, Sculpture Gallery in Winter Park, Florida for two days. Alvin was a well-known Czechoslovak sculpture artist. On this trip Jerry and Hank learned that he hand-carved the altar at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Chicago, the church they were married in.

Their friends, Joe and Carol Kus from Chicago, joined them in Puerto Rico and they had a wonderful week there.

Dear Members: Our lodge met Sunday, June 12, 1983 in the Grant Building, with Vice President Linda Mikush presiding due to the absence of President Frank Zabransky, my dad, who had surgery in Citizens Memorial Hospital in Victoria and is still under doctor's care as an outpatient there.

Pledge to the U.S. Flag was led by Melissa and Tommy Holy, youth club members.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes to the last meeting which were approved after a minor correction. There was no correspondence received by Brother Holy.

Helen Zabransky read a letter about the Special Olympics on sponsoring a youth from the Lavaca Work Activity Center. The members voted to again be a sponsor to this worthy event.

Treasurer Helen Zabransky gave her report followed by Assistant YL Evelyn Holy and her report. She informed the members of the District VI Youth Club field trip to be held in July.

Gaye Galetka gave the report for her husband, Hilmer Galetka, financial secretary, who had surgery in Lavaca Medical Center and is now resting at home.

Under unfinished business our annual Family Day in August was discussed. Vice President Linda Mikush will check into the cost of friend chicken and stew meat and report back at the July meeting.

Erwin Holy will check into a bingo permit.

Refund checks were handed out and the meeting adjourned. Refreshments and lunch were served.

Winners of the day were: Special Father's Day door prize went to Leonard Holy of Texarkana, Arkansas, adult door prize—Evelyn Holy, youth door prize— Thomas Holy.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, July 10 in the Grant Bldg., beginning at 2 p.m. Plans will be finalized for Family Day. Also July, August and September birthday celebrants will be honored. Refreshments and lunch as usual. Members are encouraged to attend.

July 8th Meeting For Lodge 87, Temple

Dear Members and Friends: We are proud of Lodge 172 and proud to know what it's all about.

Many of us come to lodge meetings and socials even though some of u. have to travel about 20 miles.

At our June 8th meeting, we had a special guest, District V Director Louis Hanus who visited with us.

Brother Hanus, your attendance was appreciated; come, again.

Brother John Ordener told us about his wife, Sister Renea's health after her dreadful surgery at St. Joseph's Hospital in Houston. He mentioned that she will be residing at the Autumn Hills Nursing Home.

All of us from Lodge 172 are wishing her a quick recovery.

Brother Winefred Appelt's mother passed away recently and we wish to extend our sympathies.

May she rest in peace.

We were also told that Sister Mary Huser's daughter's house burned. Brothers and Sisters, if anyone of you have footwear or clothing to donate, please call Sister Vicki Dressier or Sister Leona Zella.

Sister Huser's daughter will also appreciate any bedding, clothing or whatever will certainly be appreciated by her family.

Since summer has arrived many people are rushing to the lakes and other favorite resort places, while the handful of dedicated ones attend functions all the time at Lodge 172, especially when the Heart of Texas Czechs (H.O.T.) played delightful music June 11th. During this dance hosts at the door were Brother Willie and Sister Esther Kowalski and Brother Joseph and Sister Henrietta Krenek, while 1st Vice President Jerry Dressler served as bartender, and Sisters Vicki Dressler and Cecilia Klechka did a tremendous job in the kitchen.

In Around And About Lodge 183 Mid-Cities Dear Members: I will have to apologize to you members for one of my letters not being printed in the Vestnik because it seems I addressed the envelope incorrectly and it took the Post Office one month to return it to me.

The one thing it contained was the fact that should have been printed is that one of our young members: Gary Roznovsky, received his $50 gift for graduating from high school.

The lodge says "Congratulations and best wishes" to all of our members because they are the future leaders of the lodge. (I just remembered: a student friend wrote the following on his pre-Christmas examination paper: "God only knows the answer to this question. Merry Christmas!" The professor returned the paper with the following notation: "God gets an 'A'; you get an 'F'. Happy New Year!"

Remember, members that soon there will be a new lodge hall and, if everything goes as planned, for all of the future socials and activities. The

next dance, with music by "Last Call Country/Western Band," may be in the new building if everything is complete, but call one of the officers before planning to go to the new hall. The new hall is located at 3100 PLEASANT VALLEY LANE for all of you who received the calendar that the lodge sends every three months; there is a map on the back to show you where the new hall is located.

We are trying to get the mailing list up-to-date; if any member did not receive the last news calendar mailed the last of May, please call me: Norman Kneschk at (817) 4788366 and I will get one to you. I hope we haven't missed anyone in the past; if we did, we apologize.

Our table was fully occupied most of the time during the June 11th dance, we also had Brother Albin and Sister Stasie Kocich of Houston enjoying themselves; come back, again!

Everyone also seemed to enjoy the nice and slick floor which was cleaned up by Brothers Joe Krenek, Tommy Wallace, James Lyman, Jerry Dressler and Willie Kowalski who did a splendid job. Even John T. make an effort to dance with his wife, Esther and Sister Kocich.

Remember to keep in mind another dance scheduled for June 25th when we will have the Music Kings providing variety music.

July 2nd, we will have a musical group called "Eddie Marshall and His Deputies" playing country/ western tunes; this group was specially selected to entertain for us in 1983, so get your large group together and come to Lodge 172 in Pasadena to hear them perform.

June 11th, on a pretty sunny day, we had a wiener roast and picnic party that had been postponed because of rain. Attendance was very good. I counted 48 grown ups and there must have been about one and -a half dozen kids. We ate hot dogs, cokes and marshmallows and played games. Door prizes were baseball caps with the SPJST insignia. Altogether it was a lot of fun. Yea, there were a few mosquitos, but not too bad. (Pictures of the party with this report.)

At our meeting June 2nd thirtysix members and ten guests attended. Guests were: Suzanne Novak, George Skotak, Miro Jurcik, Dick Grounds, Bob Zvolanek, Victor Nemec, Norma Nemec, Al Blake, Doug Thomas and little Kenneth Meyers.

President Lydia Dirkx asked for a moment of silence in memory of John Bubak (husband of Annabelle), and Susan Kutlik.

Gift Committee: Helen Vrla, Jr. sent flowers to Susan Kutlik, Membership Committee: Alice Roberts reported several members paid their dues and that Sister Marie Stransky also made a donation to our circle. Birthday Card Committee: Greetings sent to Ella Bartos, Dianne Oates, Lillie Drzewicki and Frances Konakovsky.

Picnic at the Sokol Zizka Hall, Dallas, Texas July 3rd. This day will be filled with fun and games and even a free dance. Do mark this event on your calendar or you will miss out on a lot of fun! Sokol Slet to be held June 3, 4 and 5th.

Under Old Business Rose Parma made a report regarding the River Boat "Queen Maria" and the trip we planned to take to Jefferson, Texas.

We will again discuss this trip in August.

Czech School classes will be held at the Catholic Czech Club in Dallas June 13th and 20th, July 11th, 18th and 25th and August 1st.

Several of our members had to leave early to attend funeral services for John Bubak. We kept our meeting short because of this.

Donations made to our Circle this month were made by the following: Lillian Calder, Dorothy Reznik, Marie Stransky, George Skotak, Hattie Grounds, Doug Thomas, Rose Urban, Lydia Kartous (in memory of her parents and brother), Rose Kopecek and Mare Fitz (in memory of Susan Kutlik) and (in memory of John Bubak).

Flowers brought this month for our tables were furnished by Anne Zvolanek and Lillian Calder.

Hostesses for our lunch were: Mary Sebestik, Anne Zvolanek, Alice Roberts, Lillian Graeser, Rose Urban, Libbie Slovak, Mildred Chervenka and Henrietta Schindler.

Dear Members and Friends, This is a reminder of our July 6th meeting. For the summer months, the meal will be a cold covered dish luncheon and the hostesses will be Louise Oujesky and Josephine Prochaska.

A handmade patch quilt was donated to the club by Mrs. Mollie Walker and a granny (center piece) doll was donated by Mrs. Marie Tesar for a drawing that will take place November 2, 1983 at our family night dinner. The proceeds will be donated to the St. Thomas building fund, where the membership will have new facilities for future meetings.

Due to my attending a bridal shower luncheon at the Ridglea Country Club for Janice Rosenthal, the day of the June meeting, my club news is limited. Janice will be married to Thomas Pospichal, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Pospichal of Ft. Worth August 7, 1983. The entire Pospichal family are SPJST members of Lodge No. 49 in Rowena, Texas. My acquaintance with this fine family has been through the Ft. Worth Public School System, since Margaret was a teacher and Arnold was a maintenance administrator. They are both now enjoying well-earned retirement.

We extend our congratulations to William (Bill) and Elsie Krivanek

who celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary with the renewal of their marriage vows at St. Patrick Cathedral in Ft. Worth June 11, 1983. A pleasant reception and dance at the Knights of Columbus Hall was held, afterwards. It was a most enjoyable evening and we wish them many more anniversaries.

Mary and Benny Pavey will journey to St. Louis and Roy and I will attend his All-Class reunion in Minnesota, therefore, we will not be at the next Friendship Club meeting.

Chapter 9, Ft. Worth To Meet SVPS

Dear Members: The Slavonic Mutual Fire Insurance Association of Chapter No. 9 will have a meeting July 3rd at the National Hall, 3316 Roberts CutOff Road beginning at 2 p.m.

For those of you who would like to pay your assessments before the meeting, the secretary, Brother John Murphy will be at the hall at 12:30 p.m.

The officers will give their reports of the business which has been transacted since the last meeting.

We were sorry to hear that Brother Roy Alholm had the misfortune of breaking his elbow in a fall recently. We hope before long, it will be healed and as good as new.

BULLETIN BOARD CHARTER CEREMONIES FOR LUFKIN LODGE Newly-organized East. Texas Lodge No. 191 will hold their chartering ceremonies, tentatively set for Sunday, July 24th. MARKER DEDICATION AND UNVEILING IN LA GRANGE Unveiling and dedication ceremonies of the historical marker commemorating the founding and organization of the SPJST will take place on the courthouse grounds in La Grange at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 10th.

The general public and especially SPJST members across the state are cordially invited. This occasion will commemorate the founding and organization of the SPJST and the First Convention, both held in the second-floor District Courtroom of the Fayette County Courthouse, the first organizational meeting being held there December 28, 1896, and

25TH ANNIVERSARY OF S.P.J.S.T. TAYLOR REST HOME Observance of the 25th Anniversary of the opening of the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Taylor will take place at the Rest Home Sunday, July 31st.

From the Youth Leaders NEWS FROM LODGE 88, HOUSTON The youth club of Lodge 88 held their youth meeting May 5, 1983 and had a good attendance with 26 youth members and one guest present. We also had a cake sale on the same night.

May 19, we had another cake sale and set up for PAD (Parents' Appreciation Day). The youth members made vegetable carving center pieces for PAD. May 20 was a big PAD night; the PAD was held in the lodge's Red Room and Dining Room; this was very well-attended, with 98 guests present. Among our guests were our District V officers, Lodge 88 officers and Lodge 88 Board of Trustees, and the parents of the youth.

The menu consisted of turkey, dressing, corn, different salads and desserts with dinner rolls. The juniors brought desserts and the teens brought salads.

Afterwards, due to the dance being cancelled, we moved the juke box to the ballroom and held our social for a "May" dance, from 9 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.; everyone had a good time.

The youth club meeting was June 5 at 3 p.m. and we had 26 youngsters attending the meeting. This was also Splash Day, the youth sold sausageon-a-stick, snowcones, and watermelons. All camp information was given out at this meeting.

June 9, we had a cake sale and thanks to the youth who brought cakes.

June 11, the youth had a busy day washing cars and held a cake sale, from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. This was very well-attended by the youth members and supported greatly by Lodge 88 members and other guests.

Thanks for supporting the youth of the lodge.

After the car wash, we returned home and rested, then we returned to Lodge 88 at 7:30 p.m. for our "June" social which was a Hawaiian Party; the youth club went swimming until 10 p.m., the party was outside at the gazebo until 11 p.m. We had chips/dips, punch and

poorboy sandwiches. The youth members enjoyed the party.

July 7 is our next meeting at 7:30 p.m. and all camp forms must be in.

If the parents have any questions, please come to this meeting.

July 10 is District V Youth Achievement Day at Lodge 88; the program begins at 1 p.m. Camp is July 27th through 30th.

We talked about having a hayride and a slumber party Friday, July 1st; meet at the hall at 7 p.m., invite friends.

We will have five cakes auctioned off at the St. Joseph's Bazaar/Picnic Sunday, July 31st. We will also have a donation booth.

The meeting was then adjourned.

The El Campo-Hillje Lodge 40 youth members, met June 15 at Kutac's camp in El Campo.

Before eating the youth members had a short meeting. We discussed the educational trip being taken July 6th to Natural Bridge Caverns.

We also discussed camp briefly.

Mrs. Marek explained everything about the trip and the schedule we will follow.

We had 13 members and 5 guests present. Our guests were Alan Tindle, Dorothy Morris, Mary Tepera and Brands Lynn.

Social for the month will be swimming at Lions Park June 7th, from 2 to 5 p.m.

The youth club voted to sponsor Lisa Tepera in The Miss Texas USA Pageant by giving her $100. Good luck Lisa, we'll be cheering for you.

We discussed the District II YAD and also camp for this year, let's all participate in this members because we need to be well-represented.

Drawing was won by Mark Tepera and James Paul "Billeck.

We got a new member in June; her name is Deanna Culp. Welcome Deanna, hope you can make all of the eetings.

LODGE 117 ROBSTOWN YC ENJOYS TRIP Dear Readers, June 18 was a great day for me and our club members. We went on a trip to the beach and had a terrific time. There were eleven members ranging in ages from 7 to 16 years olds, while some were in the water others were building castles and some were looking for shells.

Everybody had a great time even though we were all very tired and sunburned.

REUNIONS SKRABANEK-MAREK REUNION The Skrabanek-Marek Reunion which has been held in June for several years was changed at the last reunion. It was voted on, by the ones present, to hold it at Flag Hall, Cyclone on the 12th of August, 1984.

Cynthia Ann VrazelThomas Robert Strmiska Wed Saints Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Marak was the setting for the marriage of Cynthia Ann Vrazel of l3uckholts and Thomas Robert Strmiska of Granger, Saturday, June 25th.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Alfred Vrazel of Buckholts. The bridegroom's parents are Mr. and Mrs. George Strmiska of Granger.

Reverend Harry Bilski of Temple and Reverend Walter Matus of Granger officiated at the doublering ceremony held at 2 p.m.

Wedding music was provided by Maurina Corley, organist, and Lisa Riola, soloist, both of Cameron. Prewedding music was provided by Patrick and Velvet Strmiska of Whitney, guitarists and vocalists.

The bride, given in marriage by her father, was attired in an original candlelight designer bridal gown by Milady made of organza with a Queen Anne neckline, full organza sleeves and fitted bodice. The full skirt swept into a cathedral train.

The gown was accented with imported French lace which was heavily pearled and sequined.

Her bridal veil of silk illusion was held by a small lace hat with Lily-ofthe-Valley flower ringlets and was edged with Brussell's lace.

The bride wore a pearl necklace which was a gift from the groom and carried a handkerchief that belonged to her great-grandmother.

She carried a cascade bouquet of ivory and lavender silk roses

centered with an orchid and accented with columbine.

Maid-of-Honor was Virginia Vaculin of Cameron. Matron-ofHonor was Debra Vansa, aunt of the bride, also of Cameron.

Bridesmaids were Elizabeth Vrazel and Debbie Vrazel, cousins of the bride, both of Buckholts; Debbie Vansa, cousin of the bride and Jolene Boothe, both of Cameron; Cynthia Strmiska of Taylor; Therese Strmiska, sister of the groom and Catherine Milder, both of Granger.

Cynthia Knapek of Taylor, cousin of the groom was flower girl.

The attendants wore lavender wrap look sundresses with a natural waistline. The dress had a paint-desprit jacket with a lace edged ruffle and elbow-length sleeves and a ribbon sashed the waist. They carried cascade bouquets of ivory and lavender silk roses accented with gypsophilia.

Best man was Patrick Strmiska of Whitney, brother of the groom.

Groomsmen were Robert Vansa of Cameron, uncle of the bride; Steve Strmiska, brother of the groom and Alan Hinze, cousin of the groom, both of Taylor; George Strmiska Jr., Joey Strmiska and James Strrniska, brothers of the groom, all of Granger; Anthony Knapek, cousin of the groom and Bobby Jezisek, both of Granger.

Ring Bearer was Chris Gaines of Cameron, cousin of the bride.

Ushers were Adolph Vansa, David Gaines and Milton Hubnik, all of Cameron, and uncles of the bride; Greg Michalik and Wayne Michalik of Granger, and Dennis Martinka of Bartlett.

Altar boys were David Vansa of Cameron, cousin of the bride, Bernard Strmiska of Granger, brother of the groom, Jerome Drozd of Temple, Wesley Knapek, George Knapek and Joe Knapek, cousins of the groom, all of Taylor.

A reception was held at Flag hall in Cyclone followed by a dinner and dance with music provided by the Jodie Mikula Band of Ennis, Texas.

The bride's table held an ivory tiered wedding cake with a fountain and stairway which covered an area of 4' x 4'; an ivory laced ruffle skirt finished the table.

The groom's table held a German Chocolate cake in the shape of a set of drums. Appointments of silver were used on both the bride's and groom's table.

Dana Mondrik of Cameron registered the guests.

Other houseparty members included Dorothy Vansa and Patsy Gaines, aunts of the bride, both of Cameron, Theresa Knapek of Granger, cousin of the groom, Theresa Mekush, Sherry Mueck and Lisa Hanel all of Cameron, Lisa Beran of Thrall, Melanie Wright of Seguin, Lisa Vansa of Cameron, cousin of the bride and Alesia Miller of College Station.

Following a wedding trip to Acapulco, Mexico, the couple will make their home in Granger.

The bride is a 1981 graduate of C. H. Yoe High School, Cameron and is employed as a legal secretary with Barkley & Cutcher, attorneys in Taylor. The bridegroom is a 1977 graduate of Granger High School, Granger and is employed by Commercial Contractors of Rockdale, and is a drummer with the Vrazels' Polka Band.

The bridegroom's parents were hosts for the rehearsal dinner at the Ponderosa Restaurant in Cameron.

Marker Dedication And Unveiling In La Grange "The Birthplace of the SPJST" Unveiling and dedication ceremonies of the historical marker commemorating the founding and organization of the SPJST at the Fayette County Courthouse in 1897 will take place on the Courthouse lawn in La Grange at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 10th. The marker is an official State Historical Marker approved by the Fayette County Historical Commission and the State Historical Commission. Brief remarks will be made by President Morris, former Director John Kubena and son of one of the charter founders of the SPJST, and Walter Freytag, chairman of the Fayette County Historical Commission.

The general public and especially SPJST members across the state are cordially invited to witness the ceremonies. Invitations will also be issued through La Grange area newspapers.

The historical marker commemorates the founding and organization of the SPJST and the First Convention of the SPJST, both held in the second-floor District Courtroom of the Fayette County Courthouse. The first organizational meeting was held December 28, 1896, when 25 Texans of Czech descent met for the purpose of organizing a new benevolent Society in the State of Texas. The First Convention of the new organization was held the following June 20th, 1897. At that convention the delegates selected the date of July 1st as the official date of organization of the SPJST. It is expected that the courthouse and the second-floor District Courtroom will be open for viewing for those who attended the ceremonies July 10th. Those interested should plan now to make the excursion to La Grange and witness this historic occasion — 86 years and 10 days after the SPJST was officially organized.

Yvonne has participated in choir, UIL, spelling and shorthand, Science Club, National Honor Society and Future Teachers of America during her high school years.

She has also been involved with the Catholic Youth Organization in Taiton and the SPJST Lodge No. 30.

Miss Kresta delivered the farewell address at graduation exercises Friday, May 27 in Ricebird Stadium.

Honor Graduate Named Top students in the 1983 graduating class of El Campo High School have been announced by Leonel M. Garza, principal.

More than 370 persons met at the El Campo-Hillje Lodge 40 SPJST Hall Saturday, June 4 for :,the "firstever" Adams School Reunion.

They had such a good time swapping stories and recalling "the good old days" that the schoolmates and teachers present voted to get together again in five years to renew childhood friendships made at the little country school Ikhich closed its doors in 1948 after teaching two generations of El Campo-Louise area farm children.

Hundreds of SPJST members began their primary education at Adams. The typically rural American two-room schoolhouse was the only formal training place for many before they headed out into the -world to seek their fortune or quit school to work fulltime on their parents' farms.

For example, 82 year old Anton J. Kocurek, father of Lodge 40 member Joann Schwartzkopf of El Campo, only went to the third grade at Adams but the good basic education he received in arithmetic has impressed more than one formally "well-educated person" . . . es-

Sister Joann fulfilled a long-time desire to again see her first grade instructor, Mrs. Albina (Cervenka) Townsend who presently lives in Georgetown, Texas. Mrs. Townsend is a native of Granger where she is a life-time member of the SPJST. She taught at Adams from 1938 until 1948 when it closed due to consolidation with the Louise School District.

Like a majority of her schoolmates, Sister Joann spoke only Czech when she enrolled in 1938 in first grade. She will be forever grateful to "Miss Cervenka" for her expertise and patience in teaching Joann to speak English.

"Miss Cervenka" modestly reminisced at the reunion that she "did not know much about bilingual education" but her students think she worked wonders at Adams.

Sister Joann states, "When we children would get together at recess time and start talking to each other in Czech, Miss Cervenka would firmly but in a kind manner caution us to speak only in English."

The dedicated country school teacher was an early advocate of visual aid learning techniques. She made her own flash cards cutting out pictures of subjects to be identified or drew them on pieces of cardboard.

Sister Joann recalled, "On the first day of school I wanted to be smart like the other kids so I remember quickly answering "zajic" in Czech when it was, my time to respond to a picture of a "rabbit."

Her patient instructor took her aside privately explaining in Czech, "In Adams School we must talk only in English and cannot say anything in Czech." "If you don't know it in English just say so and I'll tell you so that you can repeat it and learn."

It worked and they were speaking English in no time at all.

Mrs. Townsend said the accomp lishment was just another reason why she particularly enjoyed teaching her beloved first graders.

"In the other grades, the children already know something, but when they come into the first grade they don't know anything. So, you start from scratch."

Teacher pay at Adams and all country schools was modest but the real remuneration for "Miss Cervenka", and teachers like her, was observing how much the children would learn on their, way to becoming responsible grownups and good citizens.

Brother Musil was born 6 April 1914 in Chicago, Illinois. He moved to New Port Richey from Grand-

He married the former Sister Angeline Siros, 22 October, 1934 in Chicago, Illinois.

He was a retired self-employed upholsterer, a Roman Catholic, a World War II Marine Corps veteran, and a member of our lodge for 19 years.

Survivors include his wife, Angeline of New Port Richey, Florida; a son, James Joseph Musil of Houston, Texas; two grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren, all of Houston, Texas.

Arrangements were by Thompson Funeral Home, New Port Richey, Florida. Brother Musil was cremated.
