New Sales Representatives Trained At Home Office

On Saturday, May 21st., new sales representatives were trained during an all day seminar conducted by SFMs Gene McBride and Silas Smith at the Home Office.

This new method of training was devised to allow the new representative an opportunity to visit the Home Office and to view first hand

Insurance Dept. procedures and to meet other new sales representatives who will be representing our Society. The group training method appeared to be successful and will continue on a trial basis for other sales representatives that are newly appointed.

Honor Graduate

Melissa Ann King

A graduation exercise ended the 1982-83 school year for eighth grade students at Pflugerville Middle School, May 26th. Melissa Ann King was presented a certificate for being the highest grade average student in her class of 210.

Melissa is the daughter of C. J. and Irene King of Pflugerville and the granddaughter of Anton and Amelia Pokorny of Taylor and Leslie and Minda Hereford of Austin. Her family is very proud of her achievement.

(Melissa, her parents and Mr. and Mrs. Pokorny are all members of Lodge No. 29.)

Czech Class Activities At Alvin Community College Did you ever wonder how and why so many things can get accomplished?

The answer to this is to ask a busy person for help!

The Czech Club at ACC does not seem to know the meaning of the word 'quit'. Endless time is devoted to perpetuating the study of Czech, in entering into school activities and to accumulate funds for scholarships. Czech pastries, coffee, cakes, books and magazines are sold the entire school year. The funds pay for two $400.00 scholarships each year to be presented during School Awards Day. This year Debby Dwight of Alvin, majoring in math and science and Segrid Regner, of the School of Nursing,

each received such a grant for excellence in their studies.

Another highlight of the school year was the receipt of a $500.00 check given to ACC in support and promotion of Czech studies at our school. Louis Hanus, District V Director of SPJST, presented the check to Dr. Allbright, president.

The final class meeting of the school-year was celebrated with a bounty of various Czech baked goods and coffee.

It is this contagious spirit which seems to prevail among us Czechs at ACC and accounts for our continuing studies which began August, 1973. In our deliberations, let us who are of Czech origin, not forget that the study of our ancestral language needs us to persevere in our efforts, and that the study of that language needs us for its continuance.

Planning to move this summer? It's best to get estimates from three moving companies, advises the Council of Better Business Bureaus. Ask them how long they have been in business, what services they offer and what protection they provide against loss or damage. Business expenses. Keeping good records when claiming business expenses as a tax deduction is vital regardless of what you do for a living. The Tax Court recently denied a trucker deductions for meals and lodging while he was away from home because of lack of proof. Those planning to visit national parks and recreation areas this year may be interested in three passes available from the National Park Service or Forest Service. The Golden Eagle Passport sells for $10 per year and admits permit holders and everyone in their cars to all federal parks, monuments and recreation areas. The Golden Age Passport —for persons age 62 and over—is a free lifetime entrance permit. The Golden Access Passport, also a free lifetime entrance permit, is issued to the blind or , permanently disabled.

The Golden Age and Golden Access passports are good for 50 percent discounts on fees for camping, boat launching and similar activities.

Cleanup Day Scheduled For Lodge Taylor

SPJST Lodge 29 held their regular monthly meeting Sunday, May 8 at 4 p.m.

Vice President Ronnie Rieger called the meeting to order, in the absence of President Adamek.

Denisse Wuensche led the members in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. We remained standing for our deceased Brother John Leshikar.

Roll call of officers was then held.

The secretary's minutes were read and approved, also the treasurer's and Property Committee's reports were given and approved.

Sweet Home Lodge To Honor Members It is time, once again, for the Lodge 63 at Sweet Home annual supper. It will be held on the fourth Sunday, June 26 at the Firemen's Hall in Sweet Home. The meeting will start at 1:30 p.m. with the drawing of door prizes following.

Someone with a birthday in April, May or June will win a birthday cake baked by our June baker, Mildred Bolech.

The Entertainment Committee will provide entertainment following the meeting.

We will also be honoring several 50-year pin recipients and their families. We have received word that a member of the Supreme Lodge may be on hand to present the pins.

Our supper this year will consist of the famous Mount Olivet stew made by Donald Zabransky and Willie Zissa. We are asking members to bring a side dish and/or dessert; all the drinks for the afternoon and supper will be furnished by the lodge, eating utensils and bread will also be furnished.

They finally arrived in Lake Worth at the home of Ann's brother, Dolph Kovar, and his wife, Doris, whom they have not seen for over 5 years and it was quite a reunion for their 35th anniversary, adding Dolph's birthday and topped it off adding Mother's Day. While there, they showed them the town of Lake Worth and Palm Beach and enjoyed the best of restaurants and dancing.

They also toured the orange and grape fruit groves. After 4 days of constant activities, they departed and the next stop was in Kissimmee, Florida and visited the Cypress Gardens, the water-ski show and the next 2 days at the Epcot Center, one day at Disneyland and wishing they had their granddaughter with them.

At Tampa, they toured the Busch Gardens which took all day and after 5 days, they left Kissimmee and headed for Bellingrath Gardens and beautiful homes and viewed the Natural Waterfalls. After 16 days on the go and enjoying every minute, they arrived in Houston with heavy rains and high winds and tornados belting the Houston area; luckily the Urbanovskys had no real damage.

The second Czech Symposium was held Memorial Weekend, May 28th and 29th. I attended the first one last year and I was looking forward to attend again, but it was impossible for me to see it this year.

I know I would have had a chance to see the program with the generosity of my friend, Louis Hanus, because he did go. Louis Hanus, District V director, again drove his Cadillac in company of his sister, Rosalee Kostom, and her spouse, Tim, and I was glad to hear that Tillie Helmcamp, District V president, was in their company to enjoy this special program entitled "Czech Footprints Across The BlueBonnet Fields Of Texas." All four commented on the excellent program and I do hope I will have the privilege to view same some day. Besides seeing the Symposium program, Sister Tillie Helmcamp had her birthday May 27 and from what I heard, her birthday celebration lasted 2 days. "Happy Birthday, Tillie!"

A beautiful family wedding of my granddaughter, Kathleen Theresa Olexa, to a lovely handsome man, John Seldon Steinman, took place Saturday, May 28, 1983 at 1:30 p.m. in St. Anne's Catholic Church in B e au m ont._ T_e_xas— The reception followed at the Ramada Inn Ballroom. Kathleen is the daughter of my younger son, Erwin R. Olexa, and his lovely wife, Doris. John Seldon is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas E. Steinman also of Beaumont, Texas. The ceremony was very heart-warming and touching. This young couple both graduated with honors from the university, made their home in Austin for several years and will continue to live there after their honeymoon.

Kathy Trefell, vice president of the Birthday Club, with husband, Mike, enjoyed two weeks of perfect relaxation visiting with their son, Dusty Rhodes, and daughter-in-law, Michelle, in Tampa, Florida and, of course, their precious granddaughter, Margaret, the apple of their eye.

While taking it easy at their son's beach home at St. Petersburg, they also took in the sights of the famous Disney World.

Ed and Vlasta Zalmanek, with a glowing smile on their faces, were enjoying refreshments in the Blue Room; the reason — their daughter Joan and son-in-law, Fred Gentry, presented them with a grandson named Matthew Gentry, born May 27, 1983. Congratulations!

Alvin and Janet Raymond's grandson, Mike Casew, of San Antonio graduated from Churchill Senior High School and surprised his grandparents arriving and driving his brand new Jeep to take them to his graduation. After graduation, Mike will attend Southwest Texas State at San Marcus. Janet's other grandson, John Sebek, also graduated from Waltrip High. Alvin and Janet think the world of all their talented grandchildren.

Birthday Club Sister Agnes Pederson, after 12 days in Methodist Hospital, is finally coming home after having three by-passes (at first, the doctor thought it will be necessary to have four by-passes).

First, when she had her heart attack, she was taken to Heights Hospital but stayed only few days and was transferred to Methodist Hospital for her surgery. Agnes is ready and glad to come home.

John and Florence Bravenec met with a bad car accident. John was not injured, but Florence received fractured ribs which is very painful.

She stayed 3 days in Heights -Hospital and now is - at —home recuperating until her ribs will heal.

Joseph and Anna Koci were ready to leave the house when Anna slipped and fell cutting her forehead badly. Joseph, her husband, rushed her to the doctor and 6 stitches had to be taken to close the deep cut; otherwise, Ann is alright not breaking any bones.

Sister Sue High, past president of the Birthday Club, entered the Heights Hospital Sunday, May 22 and underwent a very serious surgery Tuesday, May 24th. She was confined for 12 days and now is at home recuperating getting her strength back. Next, Sue will be getting regular treatments for several months. Sue, we all wish you recovery, soon! a full Brother Willie Witovec and his spouse, Bess, are faithful supporters of our Thursday night socials. Willie suffers with, arthritis in both hips

and 6 years ago had surgery, but now underwent another operation to replace both hips; this put him in a wheelchair for a while and now he navigates on two crutches. It is amazing to see these two people, Willie and Bess, at their places on Bingo night, on the dot, enjoying the evening with family and friends.

180 Burleson Hosted Benefit Dance

After the Pledge to the flag, we remained standing for a moment of silence for our departed brothers and sisters.

Those on the sick list, this past month, were Rudy Hrabel, Kitty Rippin's mother, Louis Grochoske; at the last report they were doing better. We, at Lodge 180, want to express our sincere sympathy to Kitty Rippin on the death of her father.

We now have four new sales representatives for our lodge; namely, Kitty Rippin, Joe Hurtik, Martha Iirabel- and- Joy ee-Rus,selL You-maycontact anyone of them or any of the other representatives if you are interested in obtaining insurance.

We, at Lodge 180, hosted a benefit dance June 11th, along with the Texas Department of Human Resources to help in the fight against child abuse. The Heart of Texas Road Gang from Waco-West provided their free time to entertain all of us with country/western music from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. as well as Lodge 180 donated their facilities, with all proceeds from the dance went to the Child Abuse Center Volunteer Program.

I want to thank Mydell Grochoske for writing the last article for the paper for me. I was unable to do so due to the serious illness of my mother who spent 31 days in the hospital in Sherman, Texas. Thanks, Mydell, for a job well done.

News

Dear Members: Our lodge held a dance Saturday, June 11, with the Melody Masters playing good music to all our polka fans who came to support the lodge and enjoy the fun and their favorite polkas and waltzes.

The Building Committee met this past Tuesday and everything is AOK for the completion of the interior of your new lodge building and work has begun. All of you members be ready for July 30th for the Grand Opening. Daniel Roznovsky and Lambert Pustejovsky are in charge of the activities for the day, and they will need some help so let them know what you can do to help them.

Since the last regular membership meeting, I have been informed by Inez Greenlees, that another high school graduate had been sent a $50-graduation gift.

Congratulations to Lorrie Rejcek on her Graduation Day. If there are anymore Lodge 183 members who are graduating this year, please let Inez know so the lodge can send them their gift.

There will be a Conversational Czech language class at U.T.A. in Arlington this summer. If anyone would like to learn basic Czech language, there will be a 5-week course beginning June 14 through July 12; the time will be from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. set for Thursdays, and the fee is $35 and $2 decal ($60 for a couple), located at 205 Trimble Hall.

The instructor will be Jirina Poncarova, MA. The instructor will provide text handouts: songs, short stories, and Czech customs will be included; cassettes will be available for $1 each, and the instructor will also provide Kolache and coffee at the last session. This is a good time for anyone of you who wishes to learn a little Czech to take a short course.

Here is a little reminder of how great things are sometimes accomplished: the willing led by the unknowing did the impossible for the ungrateful; they have done so much for so long, with so little, they are now qualified to do anything with nothing.

Marker Dedication And Unveiling In La Grange "The Birthplace of the SPJST" Unveiling and dedication ceremonies of the historical marker commemorating the founding and organization of the SPJST at the Fayette County Courthouse in 1897 will take place on the Courthouse lawn in La Grange at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 10th. The marker is an official State Historical Marker approved by the Fayette County Historical Commission and the State Historical Commission. Brief remarks will be made by President Morris, former Director John Kubena and son of one of the charter founders of the SPJST, and Walter Freytag, chairman of the Fayette County Historical Commission.

The general public and especially SPJST members across the state are cordially invited to witness the ceremonies. Invitations will also be issued through La Grange area newspapers.

Wednesday, June 15, 1983—V "EST/SU/11 The historical marker commemorates the founding and organization of the SPJST and the First Convention of the SPJST, both held in the second-floor District Courtroom of the Fayette County Courthouse. The first organizational meeting was held December 28, 1896, when 25 Texans of Czech descent met for the purpose of organizing a new benevolent Society in the State of Texas. The First Convention of the new organization was held the following June 20th, 1897. At that convention the delegates selected the date of July 1st as the official date of organization of the SPJST. It is expected that the courthouse and the second-floor District Courtroom will be open for viewing for those who attended the ceremonies July 10th. Those interested should plan now to make the excursion to La Grange and witness this historic occasion — 86 years and 10 days after the SPJST was officially organized.

The District II YAD will be held Sunday, July 17, 1983 at Lodge 24, Cyclone. Let us all be sure to get this date marked on our calendars.

The date has changed from previous years. We hope all of you will make plans to attend the YAD because it is the largest function held in our district during the year. Everyone is invited!

Youth Club members still have time to register for these contests and, if you have not decided yet, please do so because there will be many prizes available for you and someone will get them. Each youth may enter four craft items as long as they are in a different category; namely, individual talent, group talent and royalty. In royalty, you must meet age requirement.

SCHEDULED FOR DISTRICT VI Dear District VI Lodge Members: It is time for camping at the State Park in Bastrop June 27th through June 30th. Please do not arrive before 2 o'clock June 27th.

Things you will need are: a swim suit, beach towel, shoes, casual clothes for 3 days, tennis shoes for sports and hiking, cap or hat, pillow, 2 bed sheets, light blanket, flashlight, insect repellent, personal items, such as soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, comb, brush, etc., towels (2), wash cloth, sun tanning lotion. Please mark your items with your initials or name.

We will have 3 special night parties: Monday, will be a toga party, Tuesday will be a masquerade party, and Wednesday is a surprise planned by the leaders. You will need to bring your costume from home for Monday and Tuesday. It looks like we are going to have a lot of fun.

Snacks will be furnished by the camp cooks at mid-morning, midafternoon and before bedtime.

To make the camp a success, we must come with a good helpful attitude and a big smile on your face; you must be ready to jump in with your group and learn new games, sports, and folk games so you can show your members who were unable to attend.

We will be doing a lot of craft stain-glass, painting, lacing, etc.

DISTRICT VI EDUCATIONAL TOUR WILL BE JULY 6TH The youth of District VI will experience their third annual educational tour to Natural Bridge Caverns, Landa Park in New Braunfels and Aquarena Springs in San Marcos, Texas. July 6 the busses will leave at 6 a.m. from the El Campo Community Center and arrive back between 10 or 11 p.m.

You may bring your drinks and food because there will be enough room for coolers in the busses. Also, you will need to bring your own spending money.

ENJOYS OVERNIGHT PARTY Dear Readers, We had an overnight party May 27th which was a lot of fun. We saw "Annie," "Star Wars," "On Golden Pond," "Popeye," and "Graduation Day." Everyone stayed up all night, except a few who went to sleep about 5 a.m. We were tired but we had lots of fun.

Another thing we did this month was to have Jeanne Champan, a representative of Mary Kay Cosmetics, come to talk about makeup and skin care. We learned a lot about it.

Later this month we are going to Sandy Lake Park; also, we're going to Six Flags in August. We are going to be doing a lot of fun things this summer.

Sister Michalikwas born January 30, 1896 in Williamson County and was a resident of San Angelo since 1938. She married Anton Michalik March 5, 1916 in Taylor. He preceded her in death. She was a member of the Wall Brethren Church. Services were held there

Minulou sobotu nám zase pěkně zapršelo neboť·jsme dostali více jak inč a půl vlahy. To jsme velice potřebovali a nyní dobře poroste.

Jinde měli tornada které nadělaly další škody. Letos těch tornad bylo už velice moc. Také blesk uhodil kousek od Dallas a zapálil stodolu a jinší budovy.

Zprávy nám oznamovali, že 22 tisíc hotelových a motelových pokojů bylo reservováno pro návštěvníky republi­ kánské konvence v 1984, která se bude konat zde v Dallas. Očekávají, že celkem přijede asi 25 tisíc lidí a že asi tři tisíce delegátů se zde sejde v ten čas. Některé ty větší hotely se zavázali, že reservují 90 procent svých pokojů. Tedy asi náš Dallas bude v ten čas opravdu přeplněný, ze ano?

Dallaská busová spolěcnost bude asi muset žádat město o větší přídavek neboť· to co nyní dostávají jim nedostačuje. Již nyní dostávají devět a půl milionů od federální vlády a příštím rokem prý musí dostat 43 milionů dolarů od města a z příjmů za busový dovoz. Také říkajf, že budou muset zvýšit vstupné na bus, jelikož nynější jim nevyhovuje co budou lidé dělat?

Známý most v Brooklyn, Novém Yorku slavil minulý týden své 100 letě výročí, neboťmost byl odevzdán 24. května 1893 a říkají znalci kteří most prohlíželi, že je v dobrém stavu a vydrží prý ještě jednou 100 let.

Most je míli dlouhý a stál tehdy více jak 15 milionů dolarů jej postavit a vzalo to celkem 14 roků jej dokončit.

Oslava tohoto mostu bude trvat prý celé dva měsíce a bude vše stát přes dva miliony dolarů aby oslava dopadla jak si brooklynský most zaslouží. Za ty léta již miliony a miliony aut a lidí přejeli anebo přešli po něm a je to jaksi zvláštnost něco takového mít.

Bylo mě řečeno, že nedělní Sym­ posium konaný v Seaton, Tx., se krásně vydařil neboť· počasí bylo pěkné a návštěvíků velice moc.

Doufám, že vše co si pořadatelé přáli vykonat, se jim podařilo. Také dallaská koncertní orchestra tam vyhrávala asi hodinu á posluchači si libovali. Přeji jim ten úspěch.

Dnes na televizi oznamovali, že v Japonsku měli dva další zemětřesení ale že neudělali takovou škodu jako to před týdnem. Prý ten první byl nejhorší za celých 40 let. Člověk nikdy neví co se kde stane a co lidí přijde o život. A nedá se nic dělat to špatné se vyskytne aniž se člověk byl nadál.

V neděli zdejší buddhisté oslavovali narozeniny svého vůdce který se prý narodil před 25 sty lety. Celkem asi 300 buddhistů bylo přítomno (ponejvíce z Viet namu) v Grand Prairie, Tx., když se konaly zpěvy, modlitby a řeči. Loni tato víra se chystala, že si postaví templ a sice cihly a kameny byli přivezeny ale budova ještě není začatá skrse nedostatek peněz. Byli tam lídě z

Tajemník řádu, bratr Dominik F. Metek, přečetl poděkování od rodiny zesnulé sestry Ann Marčákové, · za projevenou soustrast.

Sestra Marcella M. Kleprlíková oznámila, že za všechny maminky našeho řádu, živé i zesnulé, na její přání v kapli San Antonio State Chest Hospital v San Antoniu byla: sloužena mše svatá v Den matek.

Zároveň oznámila, že sestra Debora Raw v měsíci květnu oslavila páté výročí svého sňatku. Do schůze se však nemohla dostavit, jelikož čeká rodinu. Bylo rozhodnuto, aby korsáž jí byl odevzdán v příští schůzi řádu a kdyby snad nemohla přijít, aby jí byl poslán blahopřejný dopis.

Příští schůze našeho řádu připadá na svátek· otců. O věci bylo debatováno a jelikož schůzi z technických důvodů nelze konat v jinou neděli v červnu, bylo hlasováním rozhodnuto, aby v měsíci červnu schůze řádu konána nebyla.

Příslušný návrh podala sestra Viola Fajkusová, podporovala sestra Jarolyn Poppová. Sestry a bratři, poznamenejte si, prosím, že příští schůze našeho řádu bude se konat v neděli, 17. července!

Předseda řádu, bratr Emil E. Matula připomenul, že okrsková schůze bude se konat u našeho řádu v San Antoniu v neděli, 30. října.

Při losování odměn za přítomnost ve schůzi byla vylosována jména těchto šťastlivců: 1. cenu obdržel bratr Anthony Triliček, 2. cenu sestra Julia Šefčíková, 3. cenu bratr Emil E. Matula a 4. cenu sestra Viola Mazačová.

Ze členů narozených v měsíci květnu byla přítomna pouze sestra Lucile Stryková. Popřáli jsme jí, zazpívali a pak všichni jsme si pochutnávali na připravených dobrotách, které štědře rozdělovaly sestry zábavního výboru, Mary Poppová a Grace Rohanová. Při společenské hře jsme pak pokračovali v přátelském hovoru.

Je neuvěřitelné, jak ten čas letí, léta nám přibývají, stárneme, aniž si to dobře uvědomujeme. Nejlépe je to vidět na dětech jak rostou, jistě každý z Vás sleduje u příbuzných a přátel jaké změny s nimi nastaly za delší dobu kdy jste je viděli naposled.

KDE—KAM These 2 words are probably misused more than any other. We frequently hear, "Kde jede g?" This is wrong. To indicate the physical action of going somewhere, the word KAM is used: Kam jdeg; Kam jedeg?

The word kde indicates a stationary situation, and cannot be used to indicate physical action. Ex.: Kde to je? Kdy bydlfte? Kde je nadratl etc.

And using KAM, we say the following: Kam pojedete veeer? Kam piljdete po divadle? Kam jste sli po zabave etc. All you need to remember is whether you are indicating action or not.

SEM—JSEM We call words like these homonyms; they sound the same but have entirely different meanings. In English, some homonyms are: there, their, they're, bear, bare; and close, clothes.

SEM means "here", or "to here", with ACTION, Ex.: Veera ptijeli sem. Pojd' sem! Dojeli sem gt'a,stne.

All of these involved action in coming or getting here.

JSEM means simply I am, or used with certain verbs, denotes tense, or time something happened.

Ex., Jsem 112 stargi alovek.

In speaking the above two words of sem and jsem, there is practically no recognizable difference: however, in writing it makes all the difference in the world. One means one thing, and the other means something else.

SPRAVA—ZPRAVA Here are 2 tricky words, both written and pronounced exactly the same, but again have 2 entirely different meanings. It is therefore important that we know how to spell the one we wish to use.

SPRA VA—means administration, or SPRAVKA, which is a repair; or SPRAVITI, which means to fix or to repair.
