ACC Promotes Czech Language And Culture Keeping the Czech heritage alive in the community is one of the important things Alvin Community College, with its noncredit Czech program, makes every effort to do.

A large group of people from Alvin and the surrounding areas, of Czech descent, enjoy the activities of the ACC Czech Club and the Conversational Czech classes. The group is,

however, not limited to persons of Czech descent, as many others enjoy and love the study of the language and the enrichment the Czech heritage brings to their lives. The Czech classes are instructed by William Souchek, who frequently visits Czechoslovakia and keeps Czech Club members and students (Continued on Page 4)

Father's Day celebrated officially for the first time in 1910, which was inspired by a Mrs. John Bruce Dodd of Spokane, Washington. She wished to honor her father for his love and devotion in raising several motherless children. This natural expression of gratitude and filial recognition of Father's place in the home has since grown into a day of remembrance that is observed nationwide.

By Presidential recommendation, Father's Day is always celebrated in June each year on the third Sunday of the month, which is June 19th this year.

To all the fathers we extend "Happy Father's Day!" *** When speaking of ability to listen, there are many qualities that are the mark of a good fraternal leader.

Certainly one of them is the ability to listen. Most of us think we are pretty good listeners. However, if we stand back and take another look, we soon realize that listening is not something that comes naturally; it is an acquired art.

For many of us, listening, whether at a social gathering or at a meeting of our Society or district, is just a pause we feel obliged to grant a speaker until we again have an opportunity to air our own opinions.

This is not real listening.

Listening is not just a passive effort, during which we let our own thoughts intrude upon what someone else is saying. To listen to another person requires willpower, concentration, and a great deal of

mental effort. Its rewards are great, because only then do we really learn something about the other person, his feelings, his ambitions, his hopes, his gripes and his needs.

And, only when we get to know an individual, can we achieve leadership ourselves. Our success as a fraternal leader, whether it is to be a lodge president or committee chairman, depends on our ability to get things done through people. So, if you are not a good listener, now is a good time to begin. It pays to listen! Have any of you observed how poor listeners always "butt into" a conversation? Dallas Summer Czech Class "Czech Folk Music Appreciation (or "Learning Czech Through Music")" is the name of a summer Czech class which will be taught in Dallas starting at 8:00 p.m. on Monday, June 13, 1983.

The class will meet for six 2-hour sessions at the Czech Club at 4930 Military Parkway. The course is offered free by the Czech Club and is open to interested persons of all ages.

Persons may enroll at the first session. Instructor for the course is Calvin C. Chervenka,

Newsbriefs Frank Bob Vrla III recently graduated from Texas A&M University of College Station, Texas with a BS in Petroleum Engineering. He is the son of Frankie and Wilma Vrla of Dallas; they are all members of Lodge 84, Dallas. *** John and Darlene Tumis of Tomball became the proud parents of a baby boy born A pril 8, 1983 at St. Luke's Hospital in Houston. They tagged him Phillip John and he weighed in at 10 lbs., 13 ozs. Phillip is welcomed by big brother Daniel.

Grandparents of the new arrival are Sidon and Rosie Tumis of Houston and Dilmas and Mary Smith of Nashville, Tennessee. Brother Sidon Tumis is a sales representative for Lodge 142 in Houston. *** Tim and Shirley Dybala are proud to announce the birth of their first child, a boy, named Ryan Matthew.

He was born April 22 at 5:44 p.m. at Spring Branch Memorial Hospital, weighing 8 pounds, 15 ounces and measuring 21 inches long.

The National Fraternal Congress of America wiZZ observe the period

WHEREAS, the fraternal benefit societies of America for many years have sponsored Fraternal Week as a means of informing the American people of the contributions to their heritage made by fraternal benefit societies; and WHEREAS, cultural and spiritual values long have been recognized by fraternalists as worth preserving and fostering in contemporary society; and WHEREAS, fraternalists have demonstrated their deep commitment to improving and enriching family life in America; and

The local lodges and branches of the fraternal associations conduct many activities beneficial to the citizens of our State. These include scholarships, youth activities, aid to the needy, assistance to widows and orphans, help to the handicapped, care for the aged and infirm, and involvement in projects designed for the betterment of the community, including

President Reagan, Speaker O'Neill, Governor White and NFCA President Martel All Support Observance of Fraternal Week President Ronald Reagan and Speaker of the House Thomas P. O'Neill Jr. have commended the fraternal movement in the United States in connection with the national observance of Fraternal Week, June 8-14.

In his tribute to fraternalists President Reagan said that "no organizational superstructure, not even government, can serve people as humanely or, as effectively as they can serve each other through mutual help." He noted that the hundreds of fraternal associations in the United States "have an outstanding history

of service — not only to their own members but to the public as well."

The president pointed out that during the last recorded year the 99 fraternal groups affiliated with the National Fraternal Congress of America distributed funds and goods in excess of $160 million and at the same time donated more than 25 million hours of volunteer service. "This is a remarkable record, one certainly worthy of emulation," he added.

President Reagan also noted that the final day of Fraternal Week, June 14, is observed as Flag Day. He stated this is appropriate because the fraternal movement traditionally "has shown a strong commitment to patriotism."

"Love of country, love of God, love of family, and love of neighbor form the solid foundation upon which fraternalism rests," the president said. "Nancy joins me in extending every wish for a most successful and meaningful observance of Fraternal Week."

Speaker O'Neill's tribute to the fraternal societies emphasized that "it has been their spirit of helping

one another, of strong family life and of special compassion of those in need which has contributed greatly to the vigor of America."

"In paying tribute to these virtues which will be given special emphasis during national Fraternal Week," the speaker said, "we actually hold up to all citizens the traditional and fundamental values which must continue if this country is to continue on the road of greatness."

The observance of Fraternal Week and the celebration of Flag Day receive special support from 99 fraternal benefit societies affiliated with the National Fraternal Congress of America, including the local units of the SPJST• Some 10 million members of these societies will celebrate the birthday of the flag and encourage others to join in the event. Current international problems and crises demonstrate anew the need for loyalty and patriotism as paramount values in a free society. Fraternal groups throughout the United States will sponsor patriotic ceremonies honoring the flag. They also will call public attention to the importance of fraternalism and the many civic and community services it offers.

The latest annual survey conducted by the fraternal societies in the U.S. reveals that their members contributed more than $44 million in money and goods for various benevolent and charitable causes in 1981 and donated more than 25 million hours of volunteer service their in various communities. Their total contributions to a variety of good causes were in excess of $160 million and included almost $6 million for health and recreation, about $9.25 million for education and some $7.5 million for religious purposes.

Many governors, mayors and heads of other municipalities have

issued proclamations calling on citizens to honor National Flag Day and Fraternal Week.

The meaning and origin of Flag Day is described succinctly in a historical marker before an old stone schoolhouse in Fredonia, Wis. It reads: BIRTHPLACE OF FLAG DAY

Here at Stony Hill School, Bernard J. Cigrand, 19-year-old teacher and his students held the first recognized observance of "Flag Birth Day" on June 14, 1885, with a flag ten inches high, carrying 38 stars, standing in a bottle on the teacher's desk. After 31 years of crusading by Dr. Cigrand, President Woodrow. Wilson on June 14, 1916, proclaimed the national observance of Flag Day. In the first Flag Day message in 1917, President Woodrow Wilson said: "This flag which we honor and under which we serve, is the emblem of our unity, our power, our thought and purpose as a nation. It has no other character than that which we give it from generation to generation. The choices are ours."

For many years members of the National Fraternal Congress of America and of the National Fraternal Flag Day Foundation have continued to foster the cause taken up by Dr. Cigrand and to respond to the challenge of President Wilson.

Each year a seven-day period, ending on Flag Day, has been observed as "Fraternal Week."

The National Fraternal Flag Day Foundation has made a national shrine of the Stony Hill Schoolhouse.

Foundation members conduct a flagraising ceremony each year in the schoolyard to help make the American Flag and the lessons it represents more meaningful to all Americans.

SPJST Member Celebrates 25 Years As Priest Father Harry Bilski, Catholic Chaplain of the Temple Veterans Hospital celebrated his silver anniversary in the priesthood at Sunday services at the VA on May 22, 1983.Father Bilski is a member of SPJST Lodge No. 177, Academy and the Chaplain for Council No. 3444KofC.

The 18-inch high trophy and plaque for outstanding peace officer in East Bell County were donated by First National Bank of Temple.

Hunter said he did not expect to receive either award.

"I was totally surprised by them," Hunter said. "It's really an unbeliev­ able feeling to win them."

Hunter, who was named "Rookie of the Year" by the Temple Police Department in 1977, is certified by his department as an investigator and a deputy. He received an associate degree from Temple Junior College, a bachelor's degree in criminology from Central Texas College and a master's degree from American TechnologicalUniversity.

He has taken advanced classes at Southwest Texas State University and Baylor University.

During 1982, Hunter cleared 187 of the 334 cases he was assigned. He conducted special classes in criminal education for the prevention of rape and theft.

Guest speaker was Temple Mayor John F. Sammons,Jr. "Law enforcement officers have a complicated and multifaceted job," Sammons told the group of about 250 persons. "Today's officer has to have diverse qualities to cope with many problems. They have to have a particular insight into things and a belief in policein a free society.

"I think you (law enforcement officers) do great things," Sammons said. "I'm proud, as the citizens of the area are. I'm exceedingly proud that we have you."

The youth club then presented a short Mother's Day program consisting of poems by Tommy Holy, Chris and Gary Chudej. A flower was given to each mother present by Janell Chudej and Melissa Holy. A special Mother's Day door prize was won by Linda Mikush, and a candy guessing game was won by Helen Zabransky.

Birthdays in April, May and June were honored with Helen Zabransky winning the cake.

The afternoon was spent playing games and visiting; refreshments and lunch were served.

Adult door prize went to Gaynelle Chudej and the youth door prize to Melissa Holy.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, June 12 at the Grant Building beginning at 2 p.m. as usual.

Dear Members: Our last monthly meeting held at Dime Box was Sunday, May 15, 1983.

President Claude Flippin called the meeting to order at approximately 2:05 p.m.

Flagbearer Penny Spitzenberger then led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Sister Dorothy Rackel called the roll of officers and there were six present and seven absent.

Sister Rackel also read the minutes which were accepted as read.

Following Sister Rackel's reading of the minutes, Sister Madelene Iselt gave the treasurer's report which was also accepted as read.

Due to the absence of our financial secretary, Sister Kim Abshire, there was no report.

A committee report was then given by Mrs. Nellene Spacek of the Entertainment Committee suggesting that there be a polka band to play at the hall in February, 1984 by the name of Mootash Joe from Dodge City, Nebraska. A motion was made and seconded that we have this band to play for us; for more information, contact Mrs. Nellene Spacek.

There had been a request that the dance tickets go up to $3.50 per person. The motion was made and seconded. This will go in effect June 1, 1983.

A reminder to our members on how important it is to have someone checking ID's at the door. A person is needed for every dance and is to stay at the door and check everyone's ID's before they purchase a ticket. If;you have no ID then forget it because you will automatically receive a minor's ticket.

There had been a discussion that our lodge needed a new CPA because of such a slow process it takes for the reports to get finished.

Sister Madelene Iselt will be in charge of seeing that we find someone; several suggestions were made.

Also, in new business there was a discussion that we make a new dress code or enforce the one we have, this is because of some of the indecency in the way some people come dressed which makes our lodge look bad.

Lodge Holds Successful May Fete Elgin

The regular meeting of Lodge 18 was called to order by President Roy Simank.

Brother Jim Mogonye led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Roll call of officers by Secretary Audrey Boutwell revealed several were absent.

Minutes were also read by Secretary Audrey Boutwell.

Appreciation letter of thanks from the Swedish Association, for the use of our facilities, was read.

All committee reports were given and accepted.

Brother Emil Mogonyne presented the aluminum cans refund money of $59.85 in behalf of Sister Albina Mogonye.

Sympathy card was sent to Brother Bo Beran whose mother passed away recently.

President Roy Simank thanked all who helped make the May Fete a big success. Special thanks went to Youth Leaders Pat and Curtis Young for their outstanding efforts with our youth members.

We gained one new member, Dotia Dee Traweek.

The door prize was won by Sister Adele Simank.

Lodge 20 held its monthly meeting May 13, 1983 which was called to order by President Vera Ropke who asked those present to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance to the US flag and to remain standing for a moment of silence for our departed Brother Henry A. Labaj who died Friday, April 29, 1983.

Secretary Vitek called the roll and noted two officials absent.

The minutes were read, discussed and approved as read.

Correspondence pertained to a letter from Round Rock lodge inviting Lodge 20 to have a girl and boy taking part in their May Fete, Youth Leader Rita Marburger was notified.

The reports from the officers were read, discussed and approved.

A discussion of the Homecoming

was held and was noted that a large number of youngsters marched in the band during the parade.

Campo-Hillje Lodge Meets

Secretary Linda Rubesh read the minutes from the last meeting. Four officers were present.

Treasurer Leona Macha has had a busy month with all the extra bills due to hall repairs and remodeling.

President Kulcak gave us a brief description of all the red tape involved in purchasing Bingo equipment and getting a license. We were not able to purchase St. Roberts Bingo set-up so new equipment had to be found. We wish to thank James for all the work he had to do in order to get Monday night Bingo started.

Thanks also to Sister Rita Vanek for the wonderful and informative newsletter she put together and hope she can do it again later in the year.

Sister Margie Kulcak, youth leader, gave a report on the kitchen proceeds and said it shows great promise. She wishes to thank all members who donated food or helped in the kitchen. All the money goes to the youth club fund which they plan for a special project.

We now have a P.A. system installed, thanks to Brother Kulcak.

A special thanks to Rita and Frankie Vanek for the donation of a deep freeze for the bar. That was a most generous gift for Lodge 40.

If you are able to work any Monday night during Bingo please come by and volunteer. Your time will be greatly appreciated.

Remember this is your lodge and we do want it to be a success.

Mark your calendars for June 15th, 6:30 p.m. for a covered dish supper at Kutac's Camp. Meat, bread, drinks and eating utensils will be furnished.

Lodge Pokrok No. 88 Holds Monthly Meeting May 16th the membership of Lodge No. 88 held their regular monthly meeting. The usual reports of activities of the previous month were given by the officers and committee chairmen, and following are some of the highlights of these reports.

President Larry Pflughaupt presented information regarding the Czech Symposium to be held May 28th and 29th. Youth Leader Linda Wehring announced that Friday, May 20th, will be Parents' Appreciation Day at Lodge No. 88, and that the Youth Club plans a car wash June 11th.

Reminding all of us about the English play was Marie Stayton of the Hlahol Dramatic Club. Brother Hutchison, reporting for the Czech Concert Orchestra, told us of the orchestra's performance at the Czech Fest in Rosenberg and mentioned that the improved facilities there made it an enjoyable day for all who participated.

The Birthday Club plans a pastry booth for Sunday, May 22nd, the day of the play, and June 5th, Splash Day. All the ladies are requested to bring cakes or other pastries on those days, so we can enjoy those delicious tidbits. Also, the Birthday Club's drawing to be held on Splash Day, has a large array of prizes to be won by some lucky persons.

Entertainment Chairman Homer Alexander reported on some of the events planned, including the big bands such as Al Pierson, Leo Heinrich and Jan Garber. The dance schedules for the last six months of 1983 are being printed and will be available in about a week.

Brother A. J. Stayton said that the swimming pool will be ready for the scheduled opening May 21st.

The ceramic classes are scheduled to begin, the first Tuesday of June, beginning at 10 a.m., under the direction of Sister Bobby Orr, as reported by President Pflughaupt.

the phone, so it was a complete surprise for Buddy, also.

Before moving to Brenham, Buddy and Ida Mae lived in Houston and were very active at Lodge 88; for 12 years, Buddy served on the Social Night Committee but had to give it up on account of his health, but now he just looks great, it must be the lovely surroundings they live in: a two-acre plot with lovely trees surrounding the lovely threebedroom house they built 5 years ago, which sits on a slight slope with the sunset view through the picture window of their cozy-furnished combination living room and den. On the wall hangs the plaque that Buddy received from his Social Night Committee members in appreciation of his devotion for so many years. We enjoyed the delicious home-baked apple coffee cake and hot doughnuts and coffee.

After Louis had his coffee he departed to attend to his business, while Millie, Pearl and I enjoyed the Henskes' hospitality for a couple of hours until Louis came back to pick us up. This lovely couple reared two daughters and one son and now are blessed with three grandchildren, but that does not keep them at home; they are on the go with the many friends around them, dancing, playing cards and visiting; they enjoy life and don't have a dull moment; more power to both of you!

We all wish to thank you for a wonderful surprise visit.

Leaving the lovely people and their cozy home, we arrived in Temple with rain still coming down without a break. We checked in the motel and out again to have a leisurely dinner before retiring. We three girls shared a nice cozy room and our protector lodged across the hall. Millie was scheduled to check in at 8 a.m. at the Supreme Lodge for her insurance classes so we all got up real early to have an early breakfast and we arrived at the Supreme Lodge right on the button, and found other future insurance representatives present to spend the day in learning about our SPJST insurance. They all were new at this and the lectured information in selling by our two State Field Managers Silas H. Smith and Gene McBride was eagerly absorbed by the class of future sales representatives including our every-happy Millie Manack.

We had a brief visit with Vice President Bernard M. Gebala and a nice tour through our beautiful museum with Brother Otto Hanus and his Assistant Thelma Bartosh.

Pearl and I enjoyed the day because it was something different than our daily routine; couple of times we listened to the lecture and, before we realized, we were on our way back to Houston, with sunny skies, but here at home they still experienced rain and strong winds and spotted tornados. When we arrived about 6 p.m., the worst was over. Many people were homeless and lost everything, not the first time but for the second, third and some for the fourth time and were financially ruined.

I am very sorry to have missed this special occasion for May 5, 1983 concerning my friend and my doctor, Dr. John D. Jerabeck. Dedication of the Jerabeck Activity Center was held on the University of St. Thomas campus, May 5th. The' invocation and prayer were given by Bishop

John L. Morkovsky of the Galveston-Houston Diocese. President of the University, Fath‘r William Young, made remarks concerning the major contribution that this facility will play in the life of St. Thomas University. The ribbon was cut by 4Dr. John D. Jerabeck and a beautiful reception was held in the gym. (Many of you remember when Dr. Jerabeck practiced with his uncles, the late Dr. Henry R. Maresh and the late Dr. Rudolph E. Maresh on Fannin Street). Dr. Henry was our family doctor until his untimely death. Then we turned to Dr. Jerabeck and he is my physician to this day as long as he will practice; Dr. Jerabeck is our member and so were both of his uncles. We are proud and congratulate you, Dr. Jerabeck, for such a wonderful contribution to the University of St. Thomas.

Our Splash Day is scheduled for June 5th with a dance and music by Lee Roy Matocha; there will be dinner and all kinds of activities for you young people.

Our Annual Hawaiian dance will take place Saturday, June 11th with music by the Hawaiian Echoes and Hula Dancers. Come dressed Hawaiian or casual.

Minutes of the last meeting were read and accepted; the treasurer's report was given by Sister Viola Mazac.

We had 30 members present at the meeting; if past records are true, when summer comes the attendance at the meetings always drops. We all wish that it would not drop, but we all have to face the facts because children are out of school, it's vacation time, and then there are so many church and city activities that the members do scatter throughout the city. We expect everyone to be on board when September arrives.

In the meantime, we wish all of you a very happy summer, and don't forget to put the life jacket on the children when riding in a boat.

Our membership voted to dispense with the June meeting, so our next meeting will be Sunday, July 17 at 2 p.m. at 1505 S. Gevers St. Remember, if you are going through Temple, Texas, do stop by at the SPJST Building and visit with Brother Otto Hanus at the museum because there have been many additions displayed for everyone's interest, and he will be glad to give you a tour of the museum.

San Antonio Lodge Holds Regular Meeting Lodge 133 held their regular monthly meeting Sunday, May 15, 1983 at the hall located on 1505 S. Gevers Street in San Antonio.

President Emil Matula led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance and also we observed a silent moment for all of our loved ones who have since departed.

Lodge No. 117, Robstown, will hold its next quarterly meeting on Sunday, May 26, at the Jackson Woods Swim Clubhouse located on Peachtree St., off Leopard in Corpus Christi. The meeting will begin at 3 and members and interested guests are cordially invited to attend.

Anyone desiring directions may call the president, Bro. Kenneth Foester, at 241-7821. Refreshments, as usual, will follow the meeting. A program on Child Abuse and Neglect will be presented.

Lodge No. 117 met for their last meeting at the same location on March 6, with a good number attending. One new member, Tammy Cano, was accepted into membership.

The youth leader, Sis. Betty Jurica, gave an interesting and informative report. During the past quarter, the youth club has attended the Nutcracker Ballet, had a bake sale, planned and enjoyed a Christmas social, went to a movie, toured the CC Museum, and saw three movies at the new nearby

city library, along with other activities. The club plans a tour of historical sights in San Antonio on June 2nd. She displayed small Easter baskets made for residents at a local nursing home.

A letter from Dist. VII President, Bro. William J. Marek, was read concerning the idea of having a Family Day at a future district meeting. He asked for the members' support and participation.

Thelma Hrncir, Dist. VII Director, gave a brief talk on the Society's new Child Abuse and Neglect project and told of plans for its implementation across the state.

She spoke of the Society's College Scholarship Fund and the value of making donations to it.

The resignation of Vice President Frances McDonald was accepted with regrets, and her replacement is Bro. Eugene Hrncir.

An invitation from Bro. John Hranicky inviting Lodge 117 to meet in Orange Grove for its annual meeting and Christmas Social was extended. The group voted to meet at the Orange Crate in Orange Grove on Dec. 11 at 3 p.m.

Games followed the meeting and were enjoyed by the adults and children alike.

Members are urged to mark their calendars for the June 26th meeting and to make a real effort to attend.

The State Volunteer Coordinator for the Child Abuse Project will present the program on "Other People's Children" and anyone in the area who is interested is cordially invited to atttend.

154 Ft. Worth Sets June 12th Meeting

Dear Members and Friends: We were very lucky that the storm bypassed us. We were thankful for the rain and hope all our brothers and sisters and families in Houston came out safely.

This is a reminder of our next meeting for Sunday, June 12 and there will be no game night Friday, June 3, due to the Southern District Slet that will be held in Dallas that weekend.

Sister Maria Prill and family have been enjoying a nice visit with her sister, Annie Lindloff of Germany.

They took a week's trip to Kansas City to visit Eva and Virgil Dockery's daughter Debra and family for Mother's Day and then spent a few days at Medina Lake and sightseeing in San Antonio, Texas. Annie has fallen in love with Texas. Marie will be joining Annie back to Germany and plans to be back August 1st.

We wish a speedy recovery to Sister Clara Ann Wruble who was in the hospital with pneumonia and tests and now is home recuperating.

Get well soon! We were happy to hear that Brother Slim Waters of Lodge 92 did so well after having a pacemaker operation.

Dear Members: Our lodge meeting was held at 7:30 p.m. May 11 with a good number of attendance, except John and Esther Mikeska were absent because of Brother John's illness, but he is presently recovering nicely.

With deep sorrow we report the passing away of Lawrence Svec of Rosenberg, brother of our 2nd vice president's wife, Sister Leona Zella.

Also, with deep sorrow, we report the death of Sister Emelia Tafte's father and brother of Needville.

Lodge 172 brothers and sisters wish to extend their heartfelt sympathy to their bereaved families, and may their departed loved ones rest in peace.

We received some news from Sister Renea Ordener of Alvin, Texas that she had her left leg amputated in the St. Joseph's Hospital. Brothers and sisters let's not forget Sister Renea because she never forgets to send a "cheery" greeting to the ones she knows about during their sickness. Let's also remember her in our prayers.

She has a lot of friends in the Houston-Pasadena area. We also don't want to forget our other members who may be ailing.

Brother Bob and Sister Pauline Roark were sick. Our past lodge president, Brother Victor Peter, is feeling much better, even Sister Cecelia Klechka is feeling better.

Recently, Rev. Tom Sheely, our parish priest, visited me on a Sunday afternoon while being on his way to visit Sister Marie Ann Zwahr who had major surgery in the Medical Center. First Vice President Jerry Dressler made a short visit at our home to pick up some things for a garage sale at his residence in Pasadena during Friday and Saturday. I hope the sale was successful.

At the May 7 dance we had a lovely couple, Mr. and Mrs. James Bainer of Bellaire, Texas who had an enjoyable time, and we appreciated their courtesy for taking us to the dance at the lodge to hear the Dixie Kings perform.

During the rainy weather held around the city, our May 14 dance was well-attended. Everyone had a good time except John and Esther Mikeska (because of my lefthand being slightly crippled after my

stroke a few weeks ago.) The country/western music was furnished by Neal Hart. Brother and Sister Hrabina of Baytown were hosts at one of our dances. Our thanks to both of them for their help. The Vanek's band from Victoria was scheduled to play for May 29th. We will have the Dixie Kings ballroom music playing for our June 4 dance; so we suggest that you come and enjoy yourself and you may BYOB, the bar and kitchen will be open for your convenience.

Seaton Choral Club News Two accordions playing the lovely lilting Czech songs for the Seaton Choral Club practice for the 2nd Czech Symposium made it hard to keep from dancing, but, with great concentration, the members of the club sang to the directions of Annie Jakubec and Calvin Chervenka.

Those singing were: Otto Hanus, Marie Zvolanek, Agnes Schiller, Albina Mikeska, Dorothy Morris, Lillian and Frank Mikulec, Della Psencik, Mathu and Elsie Cabla, Jerry and Dorothy Pechal, Martha Klusacek, Georgia Sodek, Mary and Bob Vasicek, Ruby L. Bolton, Emily Stuteville, Calvin Chervenka, Helen Janecek, Thelma Bartosh and Annie Jakubec, our song leader; our accompanists were Henry Janicek and Ralph Milek.

President Dorothy Morris presided at the business meeting which followed the singing practice.

After the secretaries, Thelma Bartosh and Lillian Mikulec, read the minutes of the two previous meetings, Calvin Chervenka gave a report on the finalized plans for the 2nd Czech Symposium.

Everyone present reported a successful fun-filled spring picnic at the Lodge No. 47 backyard with a covered dish luncheon, games, songs, dancing and refreshments.

Martha Klusacek and Helen Janacek donated a special cake for the May birthdays of Alfred Klusacek, Mary Vasicek and Bill Kosarek. The Club appreciated the liquid refreshments, plates and napkins donated by Jerry and Dorothy Pechal and Alfred and Martha Klusacek. Also, a special thank you to Henry Janacek and Ralph Milek for the accordion music.

Special guests were Ralph and Cathy Milek, Jennifer and David, Mrs. Pauline Kopecky, and Wayne and Rosie Howlett from Kansas.

Lodge 186 of Caldwell hosted a Chamber of Commerce Banquet April 28th. The lodge facilities that seat 750 people with central air were comfortably enjoyed by all for a good time. Our thanks to the lodge members for helping with all the arrangements for the occasion and then supplying the members with a fried chicken meal. Lynn Ashby of The Houston Post was the Chamber's guest speaker who should be on top of everyone's list. It's nice when all organizations can work together for the benefit of our community.

Ladies' Circle, Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth

Esta Belle Hubenak, substituting for her son, Gordon Lee, youth club leader of Lodge No. 92, and Inez Krivanek have just returned after spending a weekend at Camp Val Verde located about 25 miles from Waco. This was a state-wide Retreat for Youth Club Leaders.

Hostesses for the June 14th meeting will be Helen Paprskar, Rose Jaworski, Lillie McMillen and Mary Cihacek.

After the luncheon, we returned to the hall and played our favorite game.

Dear Members and Friends: The old adage "Time Flies" is certainly true. It is hard to realize that school bells will cease to ring this weekend and will not be heard again until next fall. As history repeats itself, we find frantic mothers torn between how to meet the needs of the children for the endless school activities traditional with most school closing and the husband's demands to know — where and when vacation plans will be completed for the family.

In spite of the threatening weather, forty-two members arrived at the National Hall for a short FEATURES meeting before going to Fufr's Cafeteria for a group luncheon.

4.1■01 Marker Dedication And Unveiling. In La Grange "The Birthplace of the SPJST"

Wednesday, June 1, 1983—VESTNI1/9 The historical marker commemorates the founding and organization of the SPJST and the First Convention of the SPJST, both held in the second-floor District Courtroom of the Fayette County Courthouse. The first organizational meeting was held December 28, 1896, when 25 Texans of Czech descent met for the purpose of organizing a new benevolent Society in the State of Texas. The First Convention of the new organization was held the following June 20th, 1897. At that convention the delegates selected the date of July 1st as the official date of organization of the SPJST. It is expected that the courthouse and the second-floor District Courtroom will be open for viewing for those who attended the ceremonies July 10th. Those interested should plan now to make the excursion to La Grange and witness this historic occasion — 86 years and 10 days after the SPJST was officially organized.

Laurie was nominated by her school sponsor to represent Flour Bluff High School for 1983.

Ford, Mason, Juren Are Elected To Board of Tesoro

A Distinguished Graduate Eighteen-year-old Laurie graduated from Flour Bluff High School May 24, 1983.

She is planning to attend the University of Texas at Arlington in the fall to study accounting in the Business Administration field.

She graduated 10th in her Senior Class of 248 students with a final grade average of 95.238 for the four years of high school.

The awards and offices that Laurie has achieved include: • "A" Honor Roll in 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grades • Freshman Tennis Team in 9th grade (2nd in district for doubles team) • Outstanding Biology I Student in 10th grade • Drill Team in 10th grade (also in Sokol for 10 years) • Sophomore Class vice president • Yearbook Staff in 10th and 11th grades • Junior Class vice president • National Honor Society in 11th and 12th grades • Senior Class vice president • Who's Who Among American High School Students in 12th grade • The Society of Distinguished American High School Students in 12th grade

Three new members were elected to the Board of Directors of Tesoro Petroleum Corporation of San Antonio, at the annual meeting.

They are Gerald R. Ford, former President of the United States, Raymond K. Mason, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of the Charter Company, and Dennis F. Juren, President of Tesoro Petroleum Corporation.

President Ford and Mr. Mason will assume the seats on Tesoro's Board which were formerly held by Irving Kristol and Adm. Elmo R. Zumwalt, Jr. USN (Ret.) who decided not to seek re-election. They will serve for terms of three years.

Mr. Juren, who was elected president of the company in September 1982, was elected for a two-year term. His position on the Board is a new one, and it increases the number of Board members to twelve.

The nominations of President Ford and Mr. Mason were made under an agreement between Tesoro and two Charter Security Life Insurance Companies, subsidiaries of The Charter Company.

Mr. Juren, a native of Ellinger, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Juren of Ellinger. He is a 1963 graduate of the La Grange High School, and received his BA and MBA degrees at the University of Houston. He is a member of SPJST Lodge No. 51, at Ellinger.

From the State Youth. Director YOUTH LEADERS' RETREAT A BIG SUCCESS A total of forty-six persons attended the weekend Youth Leaders' Retreat at Camp Val Verde the weekend of 13-15 May. I staid to be corrected, but I believe this was a record attendance at these statewide retreats.

Although the weather was humid and rather warm, Saturday night saw a cool front come in from the north with a temperature drop of about 15-20 degrees. Luckily, everybody had brought blankets and the necessary bedcovers. The entire retreat went rather well and judging from the written comments by those in attendance, there was overwhelming approval of the schedule of events and the selection of Val Verde as the site of the retreat. The film, "Teens", was seen by those in attendance, plus a slide and oral presentation on Saturday night by District VII Director Thelma Hrncir, State Coordinator for the Child Abuse Program. The speaker on Sunday morning, I. William Cox ("Billy Bob"), was also excellent and made a number of points with a liberal application of humor in the form of some good "stories". The food was enjoyed by all, including the Friday night chili supper prepared and served by yours truly and SYD Wilson. (The amount prepared came out just right with very little left over).

About fifty-two people had told us they were coming so there were about six name tags left over for people who apparently had changed their mind since they told us they were coming. 10/VESTNN—Wednesday, June 1, 1983 wish to make additional comments in the Vestnik that would certainly be appreciated and appropriate so as to encourage still others to attend next year's retreat, if one is held, and I'm sure it will be. It goes without saying that all of you who attended should make a report in your local lodges about this retreat and boost it for next year. The idea and purpose behind these retreats is to impart information and knowledge, and more importantly, to pass on that information and knowledge to the young people and concerned adults back in the local lodges. If the latter is not done, the retreat will really not have served its full purpose. "Togetherness" and enjoying each other's company is great, but unless most or all of the information is not carried back to the local unit and applied, complete results will not have been achieved.

Although figures are not 100% complete at this time, it appears that the TOTAL cost of this year's retreat will be somewhere between $3,000 and $4,000.

"Facility needs to be cleaned; more electrical plugs installed; overall good camp ... Need fans for summer. (You may bring yours) . . .

As for the camp excellent; needs a little improvement. I think it will be great to have another retreat next year ... Pretty good overall but we need more campers. (Camp is held in August.) This was a fun retreat .. .

The retreat was enjoyable.

Facilities were clean and the atmosphere was nice. We look forward to coming next year . . . I really enjoyed the retreat but have a little less snoring. (I agree; let's bring ear plugs next time) . First time ever to a retreat camp but really enjoyed sharing ideas and exeeriences with other youth leaders ... We enjoy coming to SYR. It's' a time we can visit with other leaders learning about their clubs.

We like it here at Val Verde because we can be like one big family . . particularly enjoyed the dances we learned. We had a good time with such a congenial group and this would be a good place for next year's retreat . . . Very good fellowship.

Learned new dance. Enjoyed square dances. Val Verde in 1984. . . Same place, same station, but a little earlier in year. A-OK. (We wanted it earlier, but Val Verde was not available.). . . This is my first time and I sure did enjoy it. Thanks ... This is the best retreat I have attended. is my fifth time to attend a State Retreat. . . Everything was real nice . . . I think this is just the nicest place. Keep having retreat here ... This place is nice; enjoyed it real well, except the noise after hours. (They should have been in bed asleep.) . . . This place is great; enjoyed every minute of it. Too many rocks. (I don't like 'em either!) . . . The food was delicious and I prefer Val Verde. The closeness is good . . . Thank you for letting me come, and to Mrs. J. Marek for asking me. I have really enjoyed it and haye learned a lot. This place is super. Thank you, SPJST! D. Srubar . . . I enjoyed this retreat and learned some things that I can use in our meetings. . .This youth leaders' retreat was great! This was my first year and I thought everything was wonderful. This shows the rest of the group at the State Youth Leaders' Retreat. A good time was had by all and the retreat was a success. (Photo by SYD Wilson) there was too much dancing. For some of us who have two left feet and cannot take this back to our kids (or had no partner) this time was wasted and could have been used more productively by having other things to learn. Would like more sharing of ideas, things done, fundraising, some of things used by other leaders with their groups. (I think you probably missed our frank and open discussion first thing Saturday morning, which was revealing and certainly informative. Everyone had a chance to "tell it like it is".) ... We need to take tapes or records or instructions (written) back to our lodges. More exchange of ideas on crafts or lodge activities . . . The dance section needs the advice of the DYCs. I always enjoy the speakers you choose ... Learned a lot of new dances and songs. Wish to have tapes of all these and possibly the words to all and how-to-do instructions. Speaker excellent. Enjoyed everything he had to say. Let us know if we can bring LITs next time.

We are happy and pleased that all of you came. We trust that you did gain and will carry back some useful knowledge. You were a good group.

We were also glad to have the young LITs from Lodge 88 in Houston attend. I'm sure that all of you could have been doing something else that weekend and we are pleased that you took time off to attend the retreat. I don't believe you will regret it. You were also good about no one leaving before the entire retreat was concluded. We will have the same rule next time. Now you need to all concentrate on your District YADs and we will be coordinating everything here for the State YAD and State Royalty. Jann also did a good job and she will be available to assist in any way that she can at your District YADs. Remember that the rules are in place for this year. Any changes should be forwarded to your District Youth Counselor and we will then discuss these changes this fall for 1984.

Lodge No. 47 Youth Club held its monthly meeting on Sunday, May 1, 1983 at 2 p.m. Meeting was called to order by Lisa Tepera, President.

Pledge of Allegiance was led by Darryl Kortis. We had 5 Visitors and 15 members present.

New officers were elected for the 1983-84 year. They are: PresidentShana Patterson, Vice-PresidentKim Craft, Secretary-TreasurerKathy Billeck, Reporter-Tammy Kortis, Sgt. At Arms-Michael Morris, Flag Bearers-Daryl Kortis and Tim Wilson.

We also honored the Graduating Seniors with a gift and after the meeting supper. They were Lisa Tepera, Rogers High School, Scott Sodek, Academy High School, Elden Zavodny, Rogers High School, Gene Skrabanek, Rogers High School, David Pechal, Rogers High School and Tammy Schiller, Rogers High School. We wish them all the luck and really have enjoyed them in the Youth Club and hope they will be back to see us soon.

Birthdays for May were Michelle Skrabanek, Happy Birthday Michelle.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned members of Pinewood Heritage Lodge 178, Longview, in behalf of the entire membership, express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother PAUL KNOX HOWARD, who died Thursday, March 24, 1983 at the age of 68 years in Good Shepherd Hospital, Longview.

Brother Howard was born July 15, 1914 in Waco, Texas. He moved to Navasota, Texas with his parents and resided there for the early part of his life. He also resided in Houston 20 years and in Longview 17 years.

Brother Howard was a mechanical superintendent of the North East Texas district of Exxon Pipeline. He retired in 1979 after 43 years of loyal and dedicated service.

He was active in, and was a supporter of community activities.

He acquired some marvelous achievements during his lifetime. As a hobbiest and inventor he repaired grandfather clocks, was a self-accomplished organist and earned his private pilot license at age 63; flying was a family pleasure.

He invented a yard trimmer and was in the process of inventing an extremely sensitive internal plug for oil pipe-lines which is now being pursued by a member of the family.

Wednesday, June 1, 1983—VESTNfK/11 A memorial for Brother Howard was held at the family home in Longview by his family and friends Sunday, March 27th.

Survivors include his wife, Mary of Longview; a son, Gary , of College Station, Texas; two daughters, Joan Hazelwood of College Station and Lisa Ramos of Mineola, Texas; two stepsons, Gary W. Shepherd of Missouri City and Alan Shepherd of Irving, Texas and three grandsons.

Brother Paul was a proud member of the lodge who promoted benevolence, the SPJST Society and its purpose. No words can express our sympathy and sense of loss at the passing of Brother Paul, let us all remember him in our prayers.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 33 of Bleiblerville of which he was past president for 15 years, and had served on the Nelsonville Brethren Church Council five times.

Survivors include his wife, Annie Schovajsa of Bleiblerville; son and daughter-in-law, Willie and Danita Schovajsa of Bleiblerville; sister, Mrs. Alvin Chaloupka of Bellville; brothers, Frank Schovajsa of Nelsonville, Ben Schovajsa of Bleiblerville and Ladgie Schovajsa of Bleiblerville; two grandchildren, Candy and Tara Schovajsa and a number of nieces and nephews.

Brother Vincik was born 25 August 1902 in Poth, Texas, son of the late Jacob and Mary (Welfel) Vincik. He lived all of his life in Wilson County in Poth until 1938 when he moved to Floresville. April 15, 1929, in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, he was married to Miss Mary Pulkrabek by Father Zarb. He was a barber by trade.

Brother Vincik was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Floresville, and a member of the SPJST Lodge.

Brother Frysak was born September 21, 1921 in Moulton, Texas. He married Jerline Debus, December 25, 1947 in Wall. He was a farmer and rancher in the San Angelo area before moving to St. Lawrence in 1958. He was the first pioneer of irrigation in the St. Lawrence Community. He was a veteran of World War II and was awarded GCM, Victory, AT, AP ribbons and 2 bronze stars before being discharged in 1946. At the time of his death, Brother Frysak was serving as chairman of the North Concho Soil and Water Conservation. He also was active in St. Lawrence Catholic Church.

A rosary and funeral Mass was said at St. Lawrence Catholic Church with Father Russell Schultz officiating. Burial was in St. Lawrence Cemetery.

Brother Labaj was a member of the SPJST Lodge 20 of Granger for many years.

Henry's work in the unity and dedication to the church and to every soul will not be forgotten. He held office in the Mutual Aid and the Cemetery Committee and was the Board chairman at the time of his death.

Robert was born August 5, 1959.

He graduated from Tomball High School in 1977 and then attended Southwest State Teachers' College at San Marcos. At the time of his death he was working as Dispatcher for Package Express Company. His friendly personality and his courteous ways endeared him to many as proved by the large attendance at the services.

The survivors are his parents, Royce and Marilyn Jaksch; brothers and sisters-in-law, Joe and Anita Jaksch, Carl and Marsha Jacksh; niece, Jodi Jaksch and maternal grandparents, Herbert and Emma Jarisch.

The Knights of Columbus and the Catholic Daughters recited the Rosary Sunday evening at the Klein Funeral Chapel at Tomball. Interment was at Forest Park Cemetery at Houston.

SCASTA REUNION The Scasta family reunion will be held the second Sunday, June 12, 1983 in the Wheelock Community Center. An invitation is extended to all relatives and friends. Dinner will be served at noon so bring enough food for your family and friends.

Make plans to come; we know that our relatives live in every direction of the United States, but transportation is much easier now than it was in the older days. It will be a pleasure to see your relatives and friends. All children of our grandpa and the grandchildren are gone. All seven of us are in retired age and three grandchildren are still living.

The seven of us are still living in the community and/or surrounding area, which is a pleasant memory to us.

The homestead is still owned by our generation. Yes, a tremendous progress was made in life, so let's be proud of our pioneers because they are our foundation and, from their foundation, a great progress is made in every occupation; now we live in luxury, and push buttons.
