Symposium 1983 (Second Czech Symposium) This is another advance warning for everyone interested in the Czech heritage of Texas to mark their calendars and make their plans for a Memorial Weekend trip to Temple, Texas. The Second Czech Symposium will be held on Saturday and Sunday, May 28 and 29, 1983, at the Cultural Activities Center in Temple and the SPJST Lodge 47 Star Hall at nearby Seaton. The Czech Ex-Students Association of Texas (CESAT) through its Texas Council of Higher Education (MATICE) is the prime sponsor for the event. All Czech-founded fraternals, mutuals, and other organizations, as well as individuals, are invited to join in that sponsorship and support. This in effect will be "Temple Symposium Re-Visited" for many of the people who attended the First Czech Symposium which was staged in Temple five years ago. Many of these people long have been inquiring when and where the next symposium would be held. This is it. About the only complaint heard about the 1978 Symposium was that there often were too many topics (as many as five) being discussed at the same time and a person could not attend all of the interesting presentations. Since the most popular topic in 1978 was and still is genealogy, this

We promise to thoroughly confuse you, as well as highly entertain you May 22nd when "Aunt Abby Answers an Ad" is performed at 2 p.m. Enjoy a lunch in the lodge kitchen from 11 a.m. til ? and then sit back in your chair in the Chandelier Ballroom and watch Aunt Abby order her mail order husband from Strawberry Center. Horace Harkwell, portrayed by Arnold Spencer, is very confused when he arrives and promptly insulted by Abby. Will he stay or return home without his "bride"? You will have to wait for the answer to that one! Tickets are now on sale for only $2.00 per person. See you there! Publicity Committee symposium will feature mainly Czech genealogy with a backdrop of World, USA, and Texas history. Symposium '83 will focus on the Pioneer Czech Families of Texas, from the start of group immigration in 1850 to the peak reached prior to World War I. Five years ago, there was practically no new information about the early immigration history of the Czechs in Texas. Everyone thought that all such records had been washed away by the Galveston hurricane in 1900 or a fire in the National Archives in Washington, D.C. Such was not the case. Through the efforts and inspiration of Albert J. Blaha, Sr., a retired Brown and Root Engineer, a tremendous amount of new information has been found in the Czechoslovak Archives, county courthouses of Texas, passenger lists, census and church records, cemetery, and other records. There now are many experts on these various aspects of Czech history and genealogy and they will be talking about their findings and their experiences in gaining that expertise. In Sunday's Genealogical

SPJST Youth Performs For WOW Convention

Stephanie Becan Recently Stephanie Becan from Lodge No. 84 Youth Club of Dallas, was asked to perform for the Woodmen of the World Convention held in the Crystal Ballroom at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Fort Worth, Texas. Stephanie sang two selections, "Maybe" and "Tomorrow" from the Broadway Musical "Annie". Mr. Chuck Holbrook, chairman, having seen her at the past Texas Fraternal Congress held in Kerrville, Texas, was very impressed and extended his personal invitation to perform for his fraternal organization. It was an honor for Stephanie because it was one of the largest audiences for which she's ever performed. (Editor's Note: Information and photo courtesy Stephanie's sister, Jackie Kenney.) Fair at Seaton Star Hall, these experts will be making much of their information available to the public. Also there will be out-of-state historian-genealogists and a look into the future of the Czech Heritage in Texas. Detailed information concerning the program, registration, and accommodations will be released soon. Calvin C. Chervenka, Tres. Second Czech Symposium.
