Couple Honored on 50th Anniversary A Mass of Thanksgiving was celebrated for Edwin' and Annie Kuehn at 2 p.m. February 12, 1983 at St. John's Catholic Church in Taiton by the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Julius A. Petru.

Timmy Kresta and Keith Kresta served as altar boys.

A special blessing was presented to the honorees during the Mass.

The couple renewed their wedding vows before the altar in front of which was placed a large basket of gold mums and greenery.

Shelly Krpec performed the reading.

Acting as ushers included Alvin, Steven and Charles Schneider, III and Darrell Krpec, grandson of the honorees.

Organist Susan Drapela was accompanied by soloists Mrs. Arnold Kram, May Ann Kucera, Mrs. Albert Gregurek, Mrs. Henry Vaclavick, Mrs. Albert Buxkemper,

who sang Czech selections: "Boze coz racil", Krasna pi. Maria", "Zdravas Maria", "0 Panna Maria" and "Tisickrat pozdravujeme tebe", and one English selection.

Mrs. Kuehn wore a slipper length gown of mauve chiffon featuring an ivory maltes lace bodice. A matching chiffon jacket completed her attire.

She wore an orchid corsage with gold ribbon with a "50" emblem. Mr. Kuehn was dressed in a three-piece navy blue suit and a boutonniere of gold rose buds with a small gold "50' emblem.

The honorees' daughters, granddaughters and members of the houseparty were attired in dresses in the color shades of dusty rose.

The immediate family and special guests were presented with corsages of silk off white daisies and (Continued on Page 12)

From The SL Financial Secretary Dear Members: In accordance with Article 40, Section f of the SPJST By-Laws, I am submitting a report of our society which is extracted from the 1982 Annual Statement.

This report gives you pertinent items of information concerning our Society. All times are entered as found in the Annual Statement which was filed with the State Board of Insurance in February 1983.

Please review this report in detail. I feel that the financial figures will illustrate that the SPJST is extremely very sound. Many thanks to all those that have helped make this achievement possible.

This year marks the fiftieth year of SPJST membership for the. 245 members listed below. As a token of appreciation, each of these members will receive a fifty-year membership pin during 1983.

Much of the early success of our Society can be attributed to the support of our long-time members such as those receiving their 50 year membership pins this year. We sincerely appreciate their many years of support.

In behalf of our entire membership, best wishes for many more years of good health and fellowship are extended to all those attaining their fiftieth year of membership during 1983.

It is possible that some members who exchanged their certificates in the past may have been omitted from this list. This looks very good growthwise, however, when we check the following: Deaths, Maturities, Expirys, Surrenders and Lapses figure we have 2,178 so if we subtract 2,178 from the above 2,412 gain we have an actual 234 certificates gain (as the report shows.)

The results, of course, are very satisfactory and factual—We have a net increase in insurance of $6,400,890.00 and a net gain in operations of $665,911.91.

You will note, from Brother Mikulas' report, that the actual (average) interest rate realized is 8.27 percent even though now the rate of interest loans is 12 percent or so. Remember, there are many very low interest loans on our books, yet, plus certificate loans of 5 and 6 percent. Read the conclusion of the report for a review of Premium Refunds, etc. from 1904 to 1982 and specifically 1969 to 1982. Study reports such as these; they are there for your information. *** Sunday, March 20 we attended the District V meeting at Lodge Rozkvet No. 172 in Pasadena.

Brother J. M. Skrabanek had called and asked if we were coming so we picked him up, also, and really was a pleasurable day among the large attendance.

The meeting was well-conducted

by District V President Tillie Helmcamp, and reports were presented to the attending members. The editor will not dwell on the meeting too much because we are certain that Sister Viola Cox, District V secretary, will have a concise report of it in the near future.

It was enjoyable to listen to the Czech Concert Orchestra of Lodge 88 under the direction of Brother Rudy Dybala, and the Lodge 88 Choral Group under the supervision of Brother Tim Kostom. This type of atmosphere added much enjoyment while eating a delicious meal prepared by the host lodge members.

It was indeed a pleasurable trip for our older son, Terry, and your editor to see so many of the members and friends of many years and we regret we could not see all of you. Our younger son Bubba had to play in the High School band and my wife, Maxine, stayed with him.

Our hats off to you, the members at Lodge 172 Pasadena, and keep up the good work!

Letter to the Editor Dear Mr. Sefcik, I am currently working on my Fall '83 and Spring '84 concert bookings and I thought you would be interested to see this. You will notice the Czech music on this program.

Also, I plan to sing Czech songs for encores.

I will write you more details on this project later. Right now, I have 40 college concert prospects in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma.

From the President's Office Why In The World Purchase SPJST Insurance?

Dear Members: At one of our lodge officers' workshops in 1974 (I believe it was in Taylor) the question came up about what the answer ought to be to someone who has been approached about becoming a member of the SPJST who asks the question: "Ok, you want me to become a member of the SPJST. If I do, what are some of the benefits from becoming a member?" The discussion then centered about the idea of setting down in writing a list of these benefits. This list of benefits was then passed out at the workshops for the next couple of years.

In view of some recent developments, I discussed this with Vice President Gebala and it was decided that we should update the list of benefits from what they were in 1974 and publish them in the Vestnik. While this information should be of primary value to our sales representatives, we feel that the rank and file membership is frequently at a loss in explaining to a prospective member just what advantages and benefits there are from being a member of our Society.

Their answer is probably limited to mentioning the local lodge hall (if there is any) and their Saturday night dances and other social benefits, all of which is certainly true and attractive to a prospective member, but by no means paints the complete picture. We thought this would also be of particular value in talking to a prospect who might counter with the statement that, "So and so's rates are lower." At that point you need to be prepared to answer with, "Yes, but does the parent company offer..." and then list some or all of the following benefits that are derived from SPJST membership.

Chances are that the other company offers very few if any of the benefits that we offer. Yes, it is true that in certain areas our rates could be slightly less IF we dispensed with or modified some of these benefits, most of which are mandated by our delegates to conventions. Other possible counter-arguments to proposals by other companies, especially stock companies domiciled outside the State of Texas, might be questions such as, "Where do you go to participate in social/fraternal activities of your company here in Texas?" and "How will any complaint that I may ever have be forwarded and received by the individuals running your company, and where are they located?"

"Where will the representatives be when I or a member of my family suffers a loss?" "How prompt are their settlements of claims?" "How much do I as an individual have to say about how your company is operated?"

Wile think you know the answer to these questions insofar as the SPJST is concerned. *** The first two items under "A" below are probably not very important because the number of A and B policies on our books is small and decreasing as the years go by, however, it would do no harm to mention this to show that we are concerned about our older members in a humanitarian way.

3. The SPJST, through its many conventions, makes an annual contribution to the Southern District of the American Sokol Organization, a national physical fitness organization.

The Southern District consists of units in Southern Oklahoma and Texas and involves large numbers of young men and women engaging in programs of physical fitness, taking up much of what would otherwise be idle and spare time.

General.

In addition to all of F. the above, every member in every lodge has a right to participate in all activities of that lodge with the entire family, thus providing a major outlet for human social activity.

Every member is also entitled to attend social functions of any other lodge in the Society.

Attending and participating in such activities enhances and strengthens the Family unit against negative aspects in our human society. These activities provide a wholesome, cultural, and appropriate atmosphere to practice the human experiment of interrelationships.

G. Miscellaneous.

1. The SPJST has afforded the physical facilities for the biannual Czech Symposium conducted by Texas A&M University.

2. Our Convention has allocated $8,000 a year for-financial support in the instruction of the Czech language in higher institutions of learning in Texas.

SUMMARY. We urge all of you who feel that you may be some day somewhere challenged or called upon to enumerate some of the benefits of SPJST membership to clip the above information and carry it with you, or at least have it, readily available. You might even consider placing it between two clear pieces of plastic or having it laminated. These ought to once and for all offer you the proper rebut tal or support in promoting the insurance plans offered by the SPJST. We feel we have the best product for the money and if someone is offering you something similar for less, you owe it to yourself to take a long and careful look at what is being proposed to you and be sure you look into the future and not at just today.

April 10th Meeting For Lodge 4, Hallettsville Dear Members: Our lodge met Sunday, March 13, 1983 in the Grant Building.

The meeting was called to order

by Lodge President Frank Zabransky, followed by Pledge to the US flag led by Gary and Chris Chudej.

A resolution of sympathy was read by Gaye Galetka for our departed Brother Joe Rabel.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes of our last meeting; they were approved after minor corrections. There was no correspondence received.

Co-Youth Leader Gaynell Chudej reported on the activities of the youth club.

Treasurer Helen Zabransky gave a report. Following additional business, meeting was adjourned.

Refund checks were not given out because they were not. received Secretary Holy reported.

6/VCSTMK—Wednesday, March 30, 1983 Members then enjoyed playing dominoes and visiting. Refreshments and lunch were served.

Lucky winners of the day were Betty Kahanek, the adult door prize, and Chris Chudej, youth door prize.

Lodge To Present 50-Year Pins To Their Recipients Granger

Lodge 20 in Granger met March 11, 1983 for their regular meeting and quarterly social.

The meeting was called to order at 7:15 by President Vera Roepke, and we were led in the Pledge of Allegiance to our US flag by the youth club.

There being no deaths known, members were seated for roll call of officers. All officers were present, except our Treasurer Raymond Holubec who is recovering from surgery. It is hoped he has a speedy recovery and will be able to join us at, our next meeting.

Minutes of the previous, meeting were read and approved and followed by the reports of the other officers and committee chairmen.

It was indicated that we had received the 50-year pins for three of our members, which will be presented later to Henry Vitek, Edwin B. Janak and Jos. J. Brunner.

A letter was read reminding officers and members about the District II spring meeting, March 27 at Lodge 29 in Taylor; also an invitation was read from Lodge 29, Taylor to attend the annual May Fete to be held May 1, 1983 at 3 p.m. Lodge 20 was invited to send a girl and boy to take part in this Fete.

Youth Leader Rita Marburger reported that the attendance at the last meeting was poor due to illness.

A skating party will be discussed at their next meeting.

After a short discussion a motion was made and seconded to adjourn after which a barbecue meal, with all the trimmings, was enjoyed by the members present.

No. 28, East Bernard Meeting

Lodge

Dear Members: Since April 3, the first Sunday, is Easter Sunday, the local lodge holiday rule resets the meeting date to the second Sunday, the 10th.

There will be more on this meeting in the next communique.

Thi writer wishes to make a comment on a letter in Volume 71, number 9 of the Vestnik dated March 2, 1983. The letter is on page 6 in the 2nd column near the bottom.

To these stalwart brothers and sisters, this writer wishes you well and hope your endeavor works. Also, this writer would like to know, one day, how well it worked. To those of you, who after reading this writer's commeat and Ihet-leltegt,

actionlaken is cruel and unjust, ask yourself these questions: 1) Are you not cruel and unjust when you let a few members hold the lodge's head above water and all you do is take and reap the harvest? 2) Do you like someone else to make decisions for you? If many of you brothers and sisters think that it is not important to attend your local lodge meetings, YOU ARE WRONG, DEAD WRONG! The big boys and main liners are looking everyday for a chink in our armor to destroy our fraternal system of insurance. The local lodge is the mainstay of our system and when this goes the whole works can go.

On the humorous side of reaping the harvest, this writer always thinks of one of our lodge members who only comes to the meeting when the door prizes are going to be good.

This usually takes place if it is known ahead of time what they will be or the 6th sense tells this member that they may be good. Since our lodge has a social every meeting, there is always food on the table.

When this member does come, "Katy Bar The Door!" for all of a sudden all of the food on the table are this member's own and personal property and most if not all will end up in this member's transportation.

Yet this member very seldom brings anything or helps with the preparation. As our Jewish friends would probably say "God forbid that this member should attend more than one meeting a year or best none at all". Sometimes though, it is better to have a member like this present and have a quorum than have no meeting at all.

Back to our organization, what is "Fraternity" anyway? The word "Frater" is from Latin and is the word for "brother" co, our organization is a brotherhood. You have heard the expression "One for all and all for one." this is essentially brotherhood. When a member takes time to attend meetings, help someone out of trouble, work for the lodge (whether pay is received or not) and at the same time doing this all as pleasantly as possible when you would rather be fishing or watch the "Boob tube" is "Fraternalism".

A good example of this form of "Fraternalism" was shown in our last meeting on the 6th; Sister Frances Haverda could not stay for the social hour but she brought something for it, anyway. She is not the only one to do this but at this point in time she is the latest. By attending meetings you help the brotherhood hang in there, you take time to "Fraternize", may even forget your own troubles and even may find solutions to them. Many times this writer thinks "Oh! it is not time for this or that again" but goes on because the need is there.

Lodge 35 Changes Meeting Date Elk

Dear Members: Lodge 35 meeting was called to order by President Henry Breitkretitz.

Pledge of Allegiance was led by Flag Bearer Dawn Pavelka.

We stood and held a moment of silence for our departed Brothers Ed Pavelka from Terrell and Louis Jurecka from Mart. Our sympathy goes to the families.

Secretary Rosemary Banik read the minutes of the February meeting.

Treasurer Eddie Ray Banik then gave his report.

Youth Leader Rosemary Banik reported that the youth picked their king and queen candidates; namely, King Donald Steinke, Duke Timmy Pavelka, Queen Pam Thum, Queen Becky Crockett and Duchess Robin Breitkreutz.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Dawn Pavelka.

Chairpersons gave their reports; namely, Barbara Pavelka for the kitchen, and Gene Edward Pavelka for refreshments and entertainment.

Both of you did a good job!

New members are Bettye Elise Magee and Annatise Magee.

Sister Rosemary Banik gave out the 50-year membership pins to those who received them: Albin Joe Mladenka, Geo. Peter, Wm. P. Barton, Angela Pechacek, Rudolph Vicha, Jr., Annie Peter, Willie Mae Pavelka, A. J. Beralek and Marie Beralek.

We were proud to have Rudolph Vicha, Jr., A. J. Beralek and Marie Beralek at the meeting to accept their pins. Mrs. James Pavelka was there, too, to accept Willie Mae Pavelka's pin; she is in the Terrell Rest Home.

Door prizes were won by Dawn Pavelka—youth and Edna Tepe — adult.

The children had an Easter egg hunt and they also tried to fly their kites, but the wind was so strong only two of the kites were flying.

We had a delicious ham dinner.

Due to the District III spring meeting being on our regular meeting date, our lodge meeting was changed to Friday night, April 15 at 7:30, so mark this date on your calendar and be there.

Good Progress Accomplished at Lodge 40 Dear El Campo-Hillje Members and Vestnik Readers, The March meeting of Lodge 40 was held Wednesday, March 16, 1983 at 7:30 p.m.

The meeting was called to order

by President James Kulcak.

Minutes of the January and February meetings were read by Secretary Linda Rubesh.

President Kulcak received a letter from Temple informing us Augusta Hubenak has had her policy over 50 year3. Congratulations are in order to Sister Hubenak.

President Kulcak was asked about the new banner for the El CampoHillje Lodge. He hopes Temple will send it soon.

Brother Benny Reck, Building Committee chairman, discussed the costs of paving and graveling the parking lot because the cost of both are so high; the choice was made to gravel. Also most of the outer-doors were either repaired or replaced and they look great; come ,by and see the

new cabinet doors installed in the kitchen, they look great even without varnish or paint, thanks to ourcarpenters (brother members).

Treasurer Leona Macha gave a detailed accounting of all bank accounts and reported on all bills paid. She reported a very nice sales tax refund from CP&L. A vote was taken and approved for the renewal of our CD. All members present were informed of the passing away of Brother Allen G. Rainoshek. He will be greatly missed by friends, family and fellow members.

New applicants this month were Jerome and Lucille Michna. We welcome them back, thanks to Brother James Bacak.

The April Clean-up of the hall and dinner had to be re-scheduled for Saturday, May 14th, due to a conflict with fair activities. We are all anxious to see our SPJST Hall look nice, so plan for all members to come out and help with the cleanup.

A discussion was held on future booking and dances. We would certainly all like to see the Vrazels play in our hall if possible.

The possibility of a covered dish supper following the June 15th meeting is being discussed. Meat would be furnished. Details to come later.

Looks like our lodge is really ready to start moving upward to bigger and better times. We hope they will be swinging like in the old days.

Next meeting will be April 20, 1983 and I am counting on you to attend.

Lodge 54 Quarterly Meeting Lodge 54, West, held its first quarterly meeting of 1983 March 13th. The meeting was convened by President Rudy Sefcik at 3 p.m.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led

by President Sefcik after which we paid tribute, with a few moments of silence, for our departed brothers, Jerry Pomykal who died January 21st and Emil Jansky, who died February 8th.

The roll call of officers indicated all were present.

The minutes of the December 12, 1982 meeting were read and approved.

Financial Secretary Maxine Sefcik presented the Insurance Account Report and the Hall Account report as of March 1, 1983, and the Hall Inventory as of March 1, 1983.

Sister Mona Zahirniak, youth leader, reported there have been no youth club meetings this year. It seems our lodge doesn't have enough young people of the right age group who could participate in the youth club activities.

Sister Beanie Kacir gave a report on the Audit Committee. An audit was performed February 17 and another is scheduled for mid-April.

Correspondence received by the lodge was read by Secretary Anne Emery. This included a thank you letter from Sokol Gymnastic Association, Inc. for the use of our hall for their monthly meetings. Wednesday, March 30, 1983—VESTNIK /7 50-year membership pins in 1983.

These members are Mary C. Gerik, Vera Truitt, Andrew Gajdica, Henry F. Grossman, Emil W. Plasek, Edward Klaus, Walter R. Marek and Emil R. Hegar. Br. Emil Jansky, now deceased was also on the list. These members will be notified and will receive their pins at a future meeting.

Our lodge now has 407 active members and 293 paid-up policyholders for a total of 700 members.

Transferees from Lodge 66 are Louis F. Cepak, Evelyn Cepak, Paul, Veronica and Christine Cepak.

We are all reminded that any-time a member marries and changes their name and address, it is most important that we pass this information on to Supreme Lodge. Also address changes for the Vestnik should be made promptly. This information is contained on Page 2 of the Vestnik.

President Sefcik and Vice-President Ted Kocian will appoint a Board of Trustees and committee members in the near future. Also, there will be a clean-up day announced and, hopefully, it will be convenient for the majority of our members to pitch in and help. After all, our lodge can be just as great or small as we members want to make it. Let's all join in this effort and see what we can accomplish.

The door prize was won by Eddie Mikeska.

Our next meeting will be held June 5, 1983 at 3 p.m. Let's see if we can have a very large attendance.

Lodge Makes Charitable Contributions

Waco

SPJST Lodge 66 held their meeting Sunday, March 20th, with President Johnnie Gaidusek conducting the meeting. There was a very good attendance.

Flags were presented by Larry Brem and Chris Owens.

Members recited the Pledge of Allegiance and Lodge Motto.

All lodge officers were present.

Guide Brother George Pauling thanked everyone for their kind thoughts, cards and prayers on the illness and loss of his father.

Sister Bonnie Pruitt read the February minutes and they were approved as read.

In correspondence, Sister Engelke read thank you notes from March of Dimes, the Robert Dobecka family, and the Jim Doherty family for donations made by Lodge 66.

Brother Emil Hanus, Board of Trustees' chairman, had Sister Engelke read the minutes of the Wednesday night, March 2nd board meeting.

Entertainment Committee Report: Sister Dorothy Shilling gave a very good report. Following the meeting sandwiches, chips and cake would be served. She thanked the ladies for the sandwiches, the committee for the chips and Sister Langlotz who purchased the two lovely and delicious sheetcakes.

Sister Shilling had a very interesting report; keep up the good work, Dorothy: you are doing OK!

Sister Barbara Brem gave the youth club report. She reported special plans were for the youth after the meeting. Sister Brem thanked everyone for the paper bags, egg cartons, coffee cans and magazines, also for the coupons and magazineS. The youth had made the bags for the children. They were real cute, made up as a bunny and filled with goodies and prizes.

Health Committee Report: Sister Polly Gaidusek sent get-well cards to Brother Larry Sanchez, Sister Agnes Janek and Debbie Rejcek. We hope all of you are doing OK. We also express our sympathy to Brother George and Sister Sue Pauling on the loss of his father.

Welfare Committee Report: Sister Jeanette Smith read a thank you note from Lodge 6 Cottonwood for our donation to the Scholarship Fund and a $50 donation to the West Youth Center was made as a memorial in memory of Kevin Doherty.

In her report today, there were four names listed for donations: 1) Angela Urban, a 5-year-old child, receiving cancer treatments, $50; 2) Jeffery Warhol, receiving leukemia treatments at MD Anderson Hospital, who is a grandson of Sister Judy Warhol, $50; 3) The son of Angelina Lenart, a cerebal palsy victim, $50; 4) Tano Flores, young gentleman, needing a special wheelchair, $50; a total of donations for month of March, $200.

State Field Manager Brother Silas Smith reported there will be a seminar and dinner at the Sheraton Inn, April 6th for sales representatives and spouses. He also reported on the trip to the Dude Ranch at Bandera with winners from Lodge 66 who were Johnnie Gaidusek and James Pavlicek and their spouses.

President Gaidusek asked Sister Libbie Parma to come to the front where she was presented a lovely plaque as youth leader of Lodge 66 for 21 years. Sister Parma was the first youth leader to get a youth club organized at her home, with her assistants; namely, Sisters Louise Matus and Emilie Kolenovsky. Sister Parma can look back on a lot of memories: Princess Balls, YADs, the many Christmas programs, and the many projects they did for Lodge 66 and Linden Hall. We all congratulate Sister Libbie for the many years and a job well done.

President Gaidusek also had Brother Leslie and Sister Glena Dungan to come forward. They were presented a plaque for their many years of service to Lodge 66. They became members before we ever had a hall. Brother Dungan helped get the crossties used to build the first bridge so you could get to Linden Hall. There are many jobs they have helped on; also they

rented the hall for many years.

Brother and Sister Dungan can also look back to many years of service and I can say it was a pleasure to have worked with them. We all made a lot of steps together and have a lot of great memories to look back on, so to both of you, we are proud of you. We hope to see you all around for many years. Good luck to both of you!

Brother Otto Hanus said the committee had discussed having something for the 77th anniversary for August 16th. They will meet and have some plans at the next lodge meeting.

Sister Darlene Engelke has the new membership passes. You can get them from Sister Darlene at the hall, or you may send her a stampedself-addressed envelope and she will mail them back to you; cards will not be mailed— only when sent for!

Door prize winner was Brother Gene Owens.

Members celebrating birthdays in March were Sisters Anna Vernetti, Jewel Warhol, Dorothy Warren, Maurine Trefny, Jessica Nors, Matilda Hanus (it was great to see Sister Hanus up on the stage), and Brothers Larry Brem, Batt Vernetti, William Warren and Alfred Pankonien. Happy Birthday to each o you! The cake was brought by Karen Shelton.

For a very cute and happy ending, there came the sound of "Here Comes Peter Cottontail," three ladies with a large bunch of balloons and then here came the Easter Bunny (a very cute one) giving candy Easter eggs to everyone in the meeting. "Thank you, Easter Bunny!" Each child then received a balloon and a cute Easter Bunny bag filled with goodies and prizes.

The meeting then ended on a very pleasant event. Congratulations to the youth club for a cute and happy day.

Lodge No. 88 March Meeting Lodge Pokrok Houston #88 held its regular monthly meeting March 21, 1983, at 7:30 p.m.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led

by Flag Bearer Vincent Hegwood, following by a reading of the list of deceased members.

Secretary Malak called the roll of officers and Advisory Group members and noted three absentees.

President Pflughaupt called for the reading of the minutes of the February meeting as well as the correspondence received.

First Vice-President Clara Broz informed the membership that the Committee Books were available for distribution after the meeting.

Financial Secretary Josephine Pflughaupt read her report of insurance collections for the month of February.

Youth Leader Linda Wehring reported on youth activities and crafts, followed by Treasurer Lynn Pflughaupt giving the membership a

detailed financial report for February.

Sister Marie Stayton, reporting for the Hlahol Dramatic Club, reminded those present of the upcoming English play, "Aunt Abby Answers an Ad." The Choral Club, as reported by Evelyn Vornsand, meets on Wednesdays for rehearsals.

Brother James Hutchison mentioned several occasions at which the Czech Concert Orchestra performed recently, as well as future plans to perform, including Albert Thomas Hall on April 24th and the Czech Fest in Rosenberg. He also said that more musicians were needed for the Orchestra and that interested persons should contact them.

Brother Willie Wehring reported that the 18th Anniversary of "Bingo" at the Lodge would be celebrated April 14th.

For the Blue Room, Gene Barcak announced that the tickets for the Blue Room party to be held May 1st would be available in a few days.

Music for the party would be provided by the Ray Jurecka Orchestra.

The Czech classes held by Brother Souchek will be ended in one week.

Brother Souchek again reminded us that for future classes the number of students should be limited. He plans a beginners' class for the Fall and an advanced class for next Spring.

Brother Royal Warnasch explained the activities of the Board of Trustees during the past month.

The cooling tower, approved at the last meeting, has been purchased and installed.

A list of committee assignments to certain areas of the lodge for clean-up purposes and general maintenance was read by Brother Stayton, along with an explanation of how the new system was expected to work. Discussion from the membership pointed out that most of them preferred the usual annual Clean-up Day as we have had in the past, rather than the newly set-up system.

A motion was made by Brother John Broz, seconded by Sister Pearl Hanka to have a Clean-up Day in 1983. The motion passed. Brother 13roz was appointed to be the chairman of the Clean up Day, and April 30th was selected as Clean-up Day. Sister Mary Kosut, as chairman of Benevolence, reported 507 hours of donated time by committee workers during February. Speaking for the History Committee, Sister Frances Olexa reported that the committee had made final corrections to the history which has been written, and it was being typed for the printer.

Sister Margaret Allbritton, chairman of the Audit Committee, made a motion to accept the financial records presented for audit, seconded by Brother Amos Kadlecek. The motion was approved.

District V Director Louis Hanus presented an interesting skit called "What is in the Box?" which was enjoyed by all present.

District V President Tillie Helmcamp reported on the District V meeting which was held March 20th, and thanked the Lodge #88 Publicity Committee and Sister Frances Olexa for their publicity of the meeting. She reported that all officers were reelected with the exception of. District V Youth

Sister Pflughaupt reported that her plans for working with the District Youth had not been prepared as of this time, and that she would need help from parents and other interested workers.

The Premium Refund Committee reported that they had given out 33 checks.

A reading of the new applicants for membership resulted in the acceptance of 24 new members into the lodge.

President Pflughaupt announced that the SPJST was receiving competition from Germania Farm Mutual and encouraged the sales representatives to promote the SPJST. Guide Helen Hegwood read the names of birthday and anniversary celebrants, then drew the winning numbers for the awarding of the usual door prizes.

Donors for our refreshments following the meeting were Brother Tim and Sister Rosalee Kostom.

Lodge No. 88, Houston First of all, I wish to thank our editor for squeezing my letter in to be printed March 16 on the deadline; of course, that extra "7" made the difference, it slipped in, someway.

Our Saturday night dance, with music by the Knights of Dixie Orchestra, turned out very nicely; our guests enjoyed the ballroom tunes produced by the Knights of Dixie. In charge of the evening was Bll McCaskill; his spouse, dressed in a rose-colored gown, helped with seating the guests. Louis Darilek took care of the ticket office; Doris, his spouse, with Agnes Cheney, both dressed in lovely gowns, greeted the guests at the door. In the lobby Millie Manack and Martha Baxter were taking reservations for Al Pierson's dance for Saturday, March 26, looking lovely as usual.

At this dance several celebrations took place; the 79th birthday of Herman Liebscher was a jolly occasion with many of his friends surrounding Herman and wishing him many happy years to come. His spouse, Margereth, and daughter, Carol, prepared delicious finger sandwiches to enjoy during the first intermission. The well-wishers included Board Chairman Royal Warnasch and wife, Laura; board member John Hilsher and wife, Palmae; Karl Hassenbrock and wife,

Ora Nell; Clifford Lyendecker and wife, Jackie; Bob and Margaret All britton; board member Tim Kostom and wife, Rosalee; Carol's husband, J. R. Bruce and his youngest daughter, Elizabeth Bruce who is attending Jersey Village High School and is in the 11th grade (junior). The evening was enjoyed by all including the celebrant, Herman Liebscher.

At another table, two wedding anniversaries and two birthdays were celebrated by loyal friends of the celebrants. Edgar and Edna Ruppert were married 39 years; they pledged their vows March 22, 1944. Their friends, Allen and Bernice Coppeck, celebrated 12 years of their marriage bliss and took their vows March 20, 1971. To top it off two birthdays were included for this special evening: April 4th Edgar Rupport saw the day of his life and Noble Keating, March 22nd. This group of lovely people celebrate their special events among them every year at Lodge 88.

Next to this table, another couple celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary, none other than Lee and Eloise Flores. Both are looking well after their siege of eleven days with pnuemonia in Tomball Community Hospital from January 28th to February 7th, but it was nice they could occupy one room for their duration of illness. Their group always takes from 3 to 6 tables surrounded with mutual friends; this time out-of-town guests included Ray Haley, daughter and son-in-law from Humble, Al and Dell Metz from Rosenberg, Tom and Olga Pesca from Crosby, Tom Hoffman from Crosby, Herb and Gladys Emmons from Pasadena, Victor and Ruth Surovec from Brazoria, plus all others from Houston including my dear friends, Harry and Millie Wheeler. Celebrants Lee and Eloise Flores reared three daughters and one son; Mary Lee married to Rubin River, Katherine married to Ernest Clay, Josephine married to Bill Schaffer and son, Lee and daughterin-law, Linda. They are blessed with 9 grandchildren to keep them busy when they are not dancing.

Happy Anniversaries and Birthdays to all these celebrants of the evening and thank you for letting me enjoy your hospitality at your loaded tables during intermission.

After the Thursday night social a little bit of Ireland was observed in the Blue Room by Brothers and Sisters of Lodge 88; all being in good spirits, after nice cool refreshments prepared by our bartender, Nat, to go with the delicious corned beef sandwiches made by Millie Manack; enjoying this were Bob and Margaret Allbritton, Bill and Pat Neskorik, Willie and Edna Wehring Tim and Rosalee Kostom, Peal Hanka and Martha Baxter, all Iris for one night.

To celebrate her birthday, Sist( Ida Hanka spent the weekend in Houston. Friday morning Pearl Hanka, her daughter-in-law, went to Needville to bring her back and she spent the night at Pearl's home.

Sister Hanka's birthday fell on Sunday, March 20th, so Pearl planned a Birthday Party for her for Saturday, the 19th to celebrate her 86th birthday; by noon, two of her grandsons arrived, Bruce Hanka and wife, Karen, and two of Sister Hanka's great-grandchildren, Erin and Kristen and Brett Hanka, the

youngest of the three grandsons plus Roland Hanka and wife, Becky and Arlene Marshal and husband, Al, with daughter, Susan, and her friend, Larry Seidler, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Marshal and son, Adam, and Tim and Rosalee Kostom. Sister Hanka stayed with her grandson, Bruce, and Sunday drove her back to Needville. Pearl prepared a delicious dinner served buffet-style and, for dessert, hornebaked chocolate and apple pies; and, of course, a birthday cake baked by Erlene with candles and all for Mrs. Hanka to make a wish before blowing them out, plus a "Happy Birthday" song by all present. It was a lovely day to remember; and Mrs. Hanka, for you, many more!

Top sales representatives, Della Kadlecek and husband, Amos, with daughter, Marian spent 3 wonderful fun-days at Mayan Dude Ranch in Bandera, Texas, located on the banks of Medina River. According to the description of the 3 days of leisure and fun, they all must have had a great time. Others from Lodge 88 enjoying this were Helen Hegwood and husband, King, Agnes Pederson with her spouse, Tillie Helmcamp, and District V Director Louis Hanus. They enjoyed the country going horseback riding along the Medina River, and the wonderful and delicious food (no cooking and dish washing)! what a life!

Sunday, March 20th, the District V meeting took place at Pasadena in the beautiful new home of Lodge 172. At 12:30 p.m., the Czech Concert Orchestra entertained the guests and was later joined by the Lodge 88 Choral Club before the meeting. I am always surprised at these meetings by friends I have not seen for years and, at this meeting, I was embarrased not to be able to recall a name which was the case this time. We greeted each other with a hug and kiss, but the name? I had to ask, and when I heard Janie Kovalcik, it came right back to me: Janie in years past, always enjoyed all our stage plays and with her daughter, Stacie, and husband, Alvin Franta, attended every one of them. I met Janie Kovalcik's granddaughter, Shirley Berell, and her husband, Carl, and children, Brandon, age 7 and Phillip, 4. Isn't that nice, a family of four generations present. Congratulations, Janie Kovalcik of Crosby!

Members of Lodge 172 deserve praise for their achievement. They served a delicious barbecue dinner with all the trimmings and had loads of homebaked pastries.

Our regular monthly lodge meeting Monday, March 21st was visited by two guests, Sister Albina Hilsher and Mr. Hegwood, father of our popcornman King Hegwood, on Thursday nights.

Reported on the sick list was Sister Tenneson in the Conroe hospital. I am happy to report that three of our members who each spent over a month in hospitals are all at home now; namely, Elsie Dvorak Kade ra, Ann Svestka and Joseph Koci who had a heart transplant.

Four couples at this meeting announced their wedding anniversaries: Milert and Evelyn Antrich, 41 years; A. J. and Marie Stayton, 39 years; Jimmie and Bernice Wahlberg, 31 years; and Jim and Betty Hutchinson, 25 years.

Refreshments after the meeting were donated by Tim and Rosalee Kostom.

Lodge To Host District VII Meeting Floresville

President Bayer called the meeting of Lodge 107 to order March 6, 1983 at 4:30 p.m.

Amanda Burleson was asked to lead the members in the Pledge to the flag.

All officers answered roll call.

A moment of silence was held for Frank Mazac of Lodge 133, San Antonio, who had passed away early that morning. Mr. Mazac was a cousin of the Pavliska family. Our deepest sympathy to his wife and son and his family.

Minutes were read and corrected.

Treasurer and financial secretary gave their reports.

Correspondence from District VII President Marek was read.

Auditing Committee also reported the books were in order.

President Bayer reported on business mattes he had attended to. He had installed some of the new windows and replaced a faucet. He also stated that he would attend Longhorn Recreation Lab. Bob is a dedicated "labber" and enjoys the many new things being taught each year. A financial report was also read.

Memorials for Sophie Sralla were acknowledged from Robert Bayer family, and Anton Svoboda family.

The Rules and Regulations Committee had several recommendations for changes and additions to our present local rules. These were discussed and voted upon.

Our meeting date will be changed from the first Sunday of each month to the second Sunday. Please, all members, note the change in the date; the time will remain the same for the time being but the date is changed, this will start April 10th because we will meet after the District VII meeting.

At the District VII meeting we will not serve a meal. Pastries, cheeses, crackers, tea, coffee and cold drinks will be available.

A tour of nearby Green Valley Nursery is being planned. Time and weather will be the factors that will determine the success of that project. It should prove interesting to youth and adults alike.

Youth Leader Polly Bayer gave a short report on activities and finances. Plans for the next meeting were given. She also stated that the outing to Chuck E. Cheese was enjoyed by all. The youth were given T-shirts from the establishment; all were ready to go back, again.

Our next meeting will be held April 10th after the conclusion of the District VII spring meeting.

Meeting Date Changed for Lodge 130, Dallas Dear Members: Our next meeting date has been changed to Monday, April 11th; a "Pot Luck" supper will be served beginning at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will follow.

I was fortunate to have attended the sales representatives' trip to Mayan Dude Ranch in Bandera with my husband, Stanley. It began with a nice lunch at Supreme Lodge before we boarded buses to the Dude Ranch. After our arrival we were assigned rooms. Then off to a "Hayride" down by the Medina River for a "Big Steak" dinner. The evening was spent in the lounge listening and singing Czech polkas and waltzes played by several of our sales representatives.

Next morning, Saturday at 6:30 a knock on the door brought coffee and orange juice in preparation for a horseback ride, taking us to a "Ranch Breakfast". The balance of the day was spent horseback riding, hiking, eating with lots of fellowship and dancing at the lounge.

Sunday morning more food and relaxing before the trip home. We enjoyed being with old and new friends and hope to see them again in the near future.

Our monthly meeting was called to order by President Mary Ann Kieschnick at 8 p.m. Friday, March 4, 1983.

We had 26 members who stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

Our Secretary Alice Jochen held roll call of officers and read the minutes from the previous meeting.

All other officers' reports were given.

We are sorry to report several of our members were sick during last month; namely, Leonard Hermis, Elsie Hermis, Wanda Wilson, Dorothy Tumis, Jacob Wishkowski and Joe Cieslewitz. We hope all are feeling better now.

We reported two new members John Edward Castecka and Lindsay A. Powell for the month of February.

Brother Robert and Sister Mary Ann Kieschnick reported on a very nice and informative seminar which they attended at Temple; this was for sales representatives and "Selling SPJST Insurance." We have a very good and strong organization.

Capsule for $50 was drawn for Gregory Lynn Blahuta; sorry he was absent, and we will draw again, April 8th.

Five dollar consolation prize from the register went to Brother Robert Kieschnick.

We also had four other lucky members for door prizes; namely, Gus Florian, Agnes Becker, Joyce Habratsch and Adolf Pavlicek.

Next meeting will be at 8 p.m.

Friendship Club of Fort Worth Dear Members and Friends, Twenty-eight members and two guests enjoyed another day of food, games and fellowship at the March meeting. New members made welcome were Alphonse Tesar, Irene and Harold Green.

The birthday members for March were Homer Johnston, Jo Prochaska, Marie Prill, Vernon Prichard and Carrie Milan.

Instead of preparing a covered dish for the May meeting, the members will have dinner at the Furr's Cafeteria on Hwy. 183.

Afterwards, they will convene at the regular meeting place for a meeting and games. More details will be given at the April 6th meeting for those who were not in attendance in March.

The April hostesses will be Anna Belota and Mary Saldana.

Several of the Friendship Club members, who are delegates to the Dallas Czech Cultural Society, enjoyed a social with food, drinks and fellowship March 7th.

Easter is just around the corner, and the small children are looking forward to the egg hunts. The annual Easter Picnic will be held here on the Tirk-Alholm farm in Colleyville, if the weather permits.

March 3rd we held our meeting with thirty-three members and five guests present. The guests were George Skotak, Bob Zvolanek, Dick Ground, Miro Jurcik . and Julius Podhrasky.

Lydia Dirkx welcomed all of us and, especially, those members who have not been with us for some time.

She then called for the secretary's minutes, given by Alice Roberts, who did a very nice job. (Mary Sebestik was unable to be with us due to her husband having surgery scheduled.) Treasurer Vickie Kohn gave her report and Correspondence Secretary Rose Parma read "Thank You" cards for a pot plant from Joyce Slater, daughter of Leona Polapsky and Ella Bartos for flowers and plaque she received from our Circle.

Committee reports were given as follows: Sunshine Chairman Bessie Kalich sent "Get Well" cards to Susan Kutlik and Geoigia Long.

"Thinking of You" cards to Annabelle Bubak, Lydia Kartous and Mary Stransky. A Sympathy card was sent to Christine Gajda. Sister Kalich thanked Rose Kopecek for her donation of cards. Last month Bessie Reames and Marie Fitz donated money to be used for purchasing cards.

Birthday Card Chairman Millie Noska mailed cards to the following sisters: Mary Sykora, Angelina Ozymy, Mary Sebestik, Adell Vlk, Bertha Paryzkova and Theresa Carper.

Gift Committee Chairman Helen Vrla brought a gift to Georgie Long who was recently hospitalized.

Membership Committee Chairman Alice Roberts was happy to report that nineteen members paid their dues.

Hostess Chairman Rose Bednar acknowledged our hostesses for this month's luncheon as following: Bertha Podhrasky, Vlasta Jurcik, Hattie Ground, Floy Pokladnik,

Marie "Fitz, Helen Parma, Rose Waller and Barbara Regmund.

Dorothy Reznik thanked Alice Roberts for writing the news report last month in her absence.

Sisters who sent their best wishes and greetings to us were Liddie Pavelka, Mary Stransky, Mary Nesuda, Josephine Kankrlik, Martha Malooly, Helen Vrla, Jr. and Mary Sebestik.

Our sympathy goes to Sister Rose Kopecek who recently lost her very dear aunt.

Under old business we briefly discussed some future trips we could go on. There would be more discussion next month on where we would like to go.

The delegates for the Czech Cultural Society for this year are: Ann Zvolanek, Henrietta Schindler, Libbie Elsik and Bessie Reames.

Under new business the following announcements were made: Ann Zvolanek said she had tickets to sell for the annual Kolache Festival the W.F.L.A. will hold Sunday, May 22nd.

Millie Bartek announced that Lodge No. 84 will have a bake sale at Rudolph's Market March 26th and that Sunday, March 20th, Lodge No. 84 will also hold their anniversary dinner, program and social.

Bessie Reames reported the Fraternal Council will have a meeting this month March 17th in Ennis, Texas at the Sokol Hall.

Lunch donation was made by George Skotak. Donation to our Circle in memory of Fred Cinatl was made by Vlasta and Miro Jurcik.

Bessie Kalich made a donation in memory of Robert Gajda.

Frankie S. Noska, 4th grandson of Millie and Frank Noska, was in the calf scramble contest at the Rodeo in Houston, Texas last year and came in first. This year he went back and won first place on his brown Swiss cow, which included a beautiful gold silver with rubies buckle and a check for $85, and a Reserve Champion trophy and best taken care of animal with a check for $25.

Pam Elsik, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin J. Elsik, was married to Chris Todd February 25th. Congratulations to all! We are always happy to receive happy news concerning our members and their families.

My very good friend, Linda Cox, more or less talked me into taking some courses at Richland College.

Together we built up enough courage to go back to school. It is really a good feeling to be back behind a desk gathering up knowledge. It is never too late to pick up on education. We were told in orientation that a 79 year old gentleman received his B.A. Degree after many, many years being out of college.

Our officers table this month was given a touch of Spring look by the beautiful Japanese Magnolias Ann Zvolanek brought.

We can all be looking forward to the first day of Spring and all the many varieties of flowers we will soon be enjoying all over town.

Choral Club News

The cold, wet weather Tuesday night thinned the number of members singing, but did not diminish the quality of the Czech and English songs which were sung by the following members of the Seaton Choral Club: Otto Hanus, Helen and Henry Janacek, Emily Dohnalik, Martha Klusacek, Jerry Urebek, Anne Krcha, Thelma Bartosh, Annie Jakubec, Jerry and Dorothy Pechal, Agnes Schiller, Lillian and Frank Mikulec, Ruby L. Bolton, Dorothy Morris, and Emily Stuteville.

The business meeting, which followed, was conducted by President Dorothy Morris. The minutes were approved as read by Secretary Thelma Bartosh. The club voted to cancel their singing engagement at the Buckholts Senior Citizen Program. Martha Klusacek brought an invitation to all volunteers at the Southland Villa Nursing Home to an appreciation party March 29 at 7 p.m.

The club voted to have a "Spring Party Picnic" May 15 at Lodge #47 Picnic Ground. Further details will follow at later meetings.

We have a membership of 42 members and are planning a lot of fun along with the singing of our beautiful Czech songs. Why not join us? Help us keep the language alive.

Another recommendation was that we hold this year's Statewide Youth Leaders' Retreat at Camp Val Verde May 14th and 15th for all DYCs, assistant DYCs, youth leaders and assistants, including spouses. The training would begin Saturday morning and last through expected that Sundmmon, t

some of those desiring to attend will want to arrive sometime Friday evening or Friday night in order to be ready for the training Saturday morning. This recommendation was approved by the Supreme Lodge.

The Supreme Lodge will pay for the leasing of Camp Val Verde for that period, all meals, and mileage for one car from each lodge. This will probably require some arrangements on car pooling so that we do not have to pay mileage to every individual coming by automobile. As in the case of Longhorn, we are asking that you come prepared to stay for the duration of the training from Saturday morning through Sunday noon. No remuneration for mileage will be paid for those who do not stay for the entire training period, I think the reason for this is obvious. If you do have to go back home Saturday night, we ask that you return again Sunday morning with mileage reimbursement for only one round trip.

We hope you will be making plans to attend this Youth Leaders' Retreat because there is much valuable information to be gained pertaining to all facets of our youth program. If you plan to attend, please send us your name, lodge number, the total number of persons coming with you, and a statement to the effect that you will be present for the entire training session. For purposes of finalizing lodging and meal arrangements, we are asking that you notify us no later than Monday, May 9th.

From the State Youth Director February Vestnik Project Results Dear Readers: The February Vestnik Project required a youth to write an essay in his/her own words on one of three topics.

The essays we received were well written and a delight to read. We would like to share some of these essays with our readers. Since we can not publish all of these we are going to take excerpts from different essays from each district represented so that you may read some of the comments our youth have made about our fraternal organization.

Andy Wuensche, District II, Lodge 29, says: "I am looking forward to camp. I hope I can win my daddy's heart and get him to be a leader; there is so much for a little boy to do at camp. I don't think I'll ride a horse this year, but I know I'll be the first one in the swimming pool."

Marcy Dorotik from District VI, Lodge 30, sums it up with: "I like being in SPJST because it is neat and we do a lot of different activities. I like it when we go to camp.

We get to have parties and court (kangaroo) at night. I really like that.

I like it when we go on tours because we go places and see a lot of neat things. I like the meetings we have each month because we do a lot of things. I enjoy YAD that we have every year. It's really good because you get to enter craft and you can be in talent. I like being in talent because it is fun and you get to perform in front of a lot of people. It gets scary performing in front of a lot of people but I enjoy it!"

March Vestnik Project Dear Youth Club Members: March is the month that we celebrate St. Patrick's Day. In this project we share with you a St. Patrick's Day story followed by a St. Patrick's Day questionnaire. This project is due no later than April 15.

There are many tales surrounding the reasons we celebrate St. Patrick's Day, but the main ones are the coming of Christianity and the expulsion of the Druids and snakes. St. Patrick came to Ireland in early 600 A.D. With him he brought the concept oLChristianity,

It is also said that St. Patrick brought the shamrock (Ireland's national emblem) to Ireland. Shamrocks are usually found with three leaves, which stand for faith, hope, and love. To find a four-leaf clover is especially lucky because the fourth leaf stands for luck.

Who could discuss St. Patrick's Day without bringing up the Blarney Stone? This famous stone is located inside one of the towers in the Castle of Blarney. To the Irish, kissing this stone will bring the power of sweet flattering speech, for which they are so well-known.

We celebrate St. Patrick's Day on March 17th because that is the day St. Patrick died. The Irish celebrate a death because of the life that has been led rather than the loss of a person.

Apparently, some insurance companies assume bigness will be the key to their survival.

In our opinion, that's a faulty assumption.

Witness the dinosaur. Being big didn't save him. In fact, it probably hastened his demise.

For the dinosaur grew too large for his limited brain. As a result, signals took too long to get from one part of the body to another. In the end, he simply couldn't respond quickly enough to change.

The real issue — then and now — is flexibility. Adapting to a changing, often confusing, environment.
