Arrived at the Mayan Ranch after a 3' , 2 hour trip. Here we are being assigned Next morning we were off to a Cowboy breakfast (it was delicious) by horse our rooms by Kelli Hicks, a real gracious hostess. back.

Riding down the trail (please note t y‘ o ladies looking the wrong way ) we even have back seat drivers on a trail ride.

Happy Hour at the Ranch House.

If you wanted to ride the hay wagon to breakfast, that was also available.

We all got to know each other a little better and enjoy ed some super Finally (after about an hour) we arrived at breakfast and it was good!! fellowship.

From the Vice President's Office Attention Scholarship Applicants If you will be entering your freshman year of college this fall and have applied for an SPJST Scholarship, this is to remind you that all required data that you were to submit must be at the home office in Temple by March 31, 1983.

In addition to the data you must submit, you are also reminded that you must be a "Premium Paying" member of the SPJST and your certificate must be active for the period of the scholarship to be considered eligible.

If all of the above prerequisites are not met, you will not be considered for a scholarship.

Lodges of the SPJST Dear Members of the SPJST: All members of our fraternal organization should be aware that our SPJST society has been a member of the NATIONAL FRATERNAL CONGRESS OF AMERICA for many years. The NFCA has been in existence for over 96 years. The NFCA is an organization of fraternal benefit societies and is the unified agency of the fraternal benefit system which monitors and strives to protect all member fraternals against adverse legislation and works with State insurance departments and public interest groups whenever there are attacks on the fraternal benefit

system. The NFCA requires each fraternal society member, which includes our SPJST, to conduct a fraternal activities survey each year. The NFCA will then provide information from a consolidated report to legislators, public interest groups and insurance departments. It is, therefore, essential and important that all SPJST lodges participate in order that the NFCA may present a complete and comprehensive story of all activities of the fraternal benefit system.

Submission of annual fraternal activities in our SPJST is the final responsibility of Leonard Mikeska, Secretary-Treasurer of the home office, who gathers this vital information from each local lodge and forwards the same on a consolidated questionnaire to the NFCA headquarters as pertinent information in compliance with the various laws applicable to fraternal organizations.

The presidents of all local SPJST lodges must understand that the annual report of their fraternal activities submitted to the Supreme Lodge is of paramount importance because it justifies our tax-exempt status as a fraternal benefit organization. The survey also reflects the local lodge's community involvement and their work in charitable areas which places our SPJST in a position to prove that as a fraternal society we are, in fact, performing valuable benevolent services.

Recently, I enjoyed a friendly visit with a dedicated member from Lodge 88 named Mary Angel Kosut, who has the monthly responsibility of compiling the fraternal activities of some 25 committees functioning as a part of Lodge 88. Mary Kosut is very conscientious about the importance of correctly compiling these monthly fraternal activities of Lodge 88 members. She travels some 40 miles to and from Lodge 88 several times a month, works long hours on her reports, always smiles and is honestly proud and honored to perform this benevolent work freely as a fraternalist for Lodge 88. She states that for the past two years she has kept records of time and money spent doing charity work, including volunteer work for hospitals, nursing homes, teaching and assisting senior citizens (amen, I will need this help in a few years), working with children at hospitals and orphan homes and assisting patients with therapy as needed.

Mary keeps a record of the money spent by members for transportation costs while performing these charitable acts of Humanity. A few years ago (in 1980) I was privileged to assist Mary Kosut in designing a simple reporting form (Lodge 88-100 form) which is presently being given monthly to each committee chairman who lists the names of his or her committee members and the hours worked without compensation, and the money spent for the costs of transportation, supplies and other events and acts involving fraternalism by Lodge 88 committee members.

In 1981, our SPJST society expended over $1 million on fraternal activities and our local lodge members donated 121,271 hours of free benevolent work, held 5,045 events and performed 32,803 acts of brotherly love as true

fraternalists. During 1982, Lodge 88 contributed 1,961 hours of charity work at the total cost of $2,060 and the various committees contributed a total of 15,612 working hours without compensation for a grand total of 17,573 hours for the year.

May I congratulate Lodge 88 for the benevolent efforts in compiling these fraternal activities for our home office in Temple, Texas, as well as the other lodges in District V and other districts of our SPJST society — A job well done with pride and devotion.

Uncorrected Minutes Of The Fall Meeting Of District III October 24, 1982 Host Lodge Jaro No. 130 Dallas Promptly at 11:00 a.m. the meeting was called to order by President Vernon Wood. Flag Bearer, Sister Therese Dobecka, came forward to lead the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance; she also recited the SPJST Motto.

Sister Rose Parma, president of Lodge 130, extended a warm welcome to all attending the meeting. She used a phrase the Spanish often use, "Our Home is your Home."

In response to Sister Parma's welcome, 1st Vice President Robert Dobecka thanked Lodge 130 for hosting the Fall meeting. He expressed hope for a successful meeting. He remarked about the small attendance and was hopeful more members would come after lunch.

President Wood announced the need to appoint three persons to audit the books. John Murphy, Albert Kubala and Lydia Dobecka were named to serve on the Auditing Committee.

President Wood asked if the minutes from the Spring meeting needed to be read or would the minutes be accepted as printed in the Vestnik. A motion was made by Brother John Murphy to accept the minutes as printed in the Vestnik.

Brother Otto Hanus seconded the motion. The motion carried.

Brother Joe Ondrusek, 2nd vice president, read the list of departed members. The membership stood in a moment of silence in tribute to our departed brothers and sisters.

Brother Bernard Hlavaty, Sr., secretary of District III, stated there was no correspondence since the last meeting.

President Wood began with reports from District III officers and standing committees.

Brother John Murphy, chairman of the By-Laws Committee had nothing new to report.

Chairman of the Insurance Committee, Brother Ben Jarma, had nothing new to report.

For the Publication Committee, Brother Albert Banik, regretted Brother Ed Mazanec had retired from the committee. He stated Brother Mazenec had done a good job and was a dedicated person.

Brother Banik, as the new member for District III of the Publication Committee, expressed his willingness to work with and support the committee.

Chairman of the Finance Committee, Brother Arnold Vrla, stated the Finance Committee met with the Supreme Lodge to recommend to reduce the rate paid from gasoline allotment to 35C a mile for those driving on official SPJST business.

This rate would remain in effect until the next convention. This was done by secret ballots by all the delegates to the last convention.

Brother Vrla stated the Retirement Fund Plan was coming along nicely.'

President Wood then called on District III Director Sid Pokladnik for his report. Brother Sid welcomed everyone to the meeting and invited members to move up since there were several vacant chairs up front.

He promised no collection would be taken up.

October 11 and 12 a historic meeting of the SPJST was held in La Grange, Texas at the Court House in the Judge's Chamber. In 1897 in this same location the SPJST was born. Although it was a very rainy day, an impressive meeting was held with several prominent City Officials in attendance.

Brother Sid emphasized the importance of the By-Laws and the need for members to read and study them; the convention is not far off. If anyone has any suggestions or new ideas, he or she needs to get in touch with the By-Laws Committee so they can be brought up and discussed during the convention in 1984.

He also commented on the 8 percent increase in refunds to the local lodges this year. He advised members to assist the sales representatives in securing new memberships so their lodges can continue to grow. Also, the cash value of the premium refund has been increased this year from 2 percent to 3 percent effective on the anniversary date of the policy.

Brother Sid had high praise for the computer being used in the home office, and also for the office personnel who are in charge of its operation. Information for the Vestnik can now be compiled much quicker, thus saving a considerable amount of money and time.

The benefits derived from Supreme Lodge officers and directors attending the National Fraternal Congress of America was termed as an asset. Much information and many changes are discussed among the 100 Fraternal Societies attending this convention. When any of these changes can benefit SPJST, these changes are put into our system.

High School Graduates were urged to take advantage of the $25,000.00 Scholarship funds being set aside for college education.

Application is available through insurance membership.

Brother Sid commented briefly on the Youth Programs since Sister Bessie Petr would be giving a detailed report later. He thanked Youth Counselor, Sister Petr, and her helpers. He urged the youth to take advantage of the summer camp.

He welcomed Brother Albert Banik as a new member of the Publication Committee.

Brother Sid stated local lodges need to become more involved in charitable works in their communities. He emphasized the importance of keeping good records of these charitable works and donations. He also stated the need for good records to be kept for tax purposes as several of the lodges have been audited recently.

Money is now available for loans.

The interest rate is 13 percent. To be eligible for a loan application, a one-year membership and a $25,000.00 Insurance Coverage with SPJST is required.

Brother Sid stated there are 430 sales representatives in District III and 188 of these had no sales yet this year. Several nice prizes are being offered to the 30 top sales representatives this year. He asked the sales people present to stand up and be recognized. He urged all to take advantage of the nice prizes being offered and to be proud of the SPJST lodges they represent.

In his report on the two Rest Homes, Brother Sid reported both homes had waiting lists and both were operating nicely. A committee is looking into the cost of adding a new wing to the home in Needville.

Anyone desiring to make a donation or memorial to either the Rest Home in Taylor or Needville please specify on the check: Charitable Fund.

Brother Sid had high praise for the administrators of both homes who are responsible for keeping things running smoothly. With the conclusion of Brother Sid's report, President Wood recessed the meeting for a lunch break.

After lunch, Youth Counselor Sister Bessie Petr welcomed the ladies, gentlemen, and all the youngsters. Since the last District III meeting, a lot of activity has been going on with our youth.

Y.A.D. at Lodge 84, Dallas, State Youth Activity - Temple, Summer Camp - Camp Val Verde, State Royalty - Academy.

Sister Bessie stated it took lots of help and she had a lot of super help.

She would have liked to name each and everyone who helped, but stated that would be impossible. She thanked all the youth leaders and all the parents. Sister Bessie stated: "If you encouraged your child in talent, YAD, crafts and contests, then I want to thank you. No one person can do it alone. The camp was great.

The twelve Chaperones were super.

The camp staff was wonderful. No injuries were reported at camp this year. Brother Sid Pokladnik spent a couple of days with them at camp.

He knows what kind of meals they have and he always brings a couple of bags of hot dogs and they all love him for it." Sister Bessie thanked the Supreme Lodge for providing money and whatever they do for our youth. There were 70 who attended camp this year. Money allotted for camp was $5,518.18. Money spent was $4,109.34. An excess amount of $1,408.94 is being returned to the Supreme Lodge. Camp rental, food,

staff and activities amounted to $2,868.22. Gas mileage allowance for chaperones, supplies and equipment cost $1,241.12. If possible, camp will be held earlier next year in hopes more youth will get a chance to participate. In August most youth have band and other school related activities started.

"We have a poster contest that will be judged this afternoon. I have asked three ladies, Sisters Breitkreutz, Hlavaty and Mason to be the judges. Winners will be announced later.

The youth leader of Lodge 130, Sister Kathy Pottkotter has prepared a program for us. We hope you will enjoy it. After the program we will have the District III youth meeting downstairs."

Sister Bessie stated she had saved the best until last by announcing the new King and Duke of District III. Named as King is Darrin Banik and Duke Tommy Pavelka. Sister Bessie had a check for each as a token of appreciation. King Darrin Banik could not be present to accept his because of his job commitment.

Youth Leader, Sister Kathy Pottkotter, was emcee for the Youth Program. Youngsters who sang and danced "The Red Handkerchief" included Chris Coker, Kelli Kopecky, Christopher Novak, Amber Ondrusek, Richard Kopecky, Leslie Conner, Aaron Kopecky and Meribeth Novak all of Lodge 84. Christopher Novak sang a cute song.

Leanne Parma of Lodge 130 performed a gymnastic number.

Chris Coker of Lodge 84 danced and sang an Indian song. Stephanie Becan of Lodge 84 displayed her talents by singing two selections, "Where is Love?" and also, "Tommorrow" from the musical "Annie."

Stephanie also performed at the Texas Fraternal Congress Convention in Kerrville. Laura Pottkotter of Lodge 130 did a recitation "Things About My Sister Susy."

Amber Ondrusek of Lodge 84 entertained by singing a song and twirling her baton. The program was well-presented and the highlight of the afternoon. All the youngsters performed exceptionally well. Sister Petr treated all the youth to refreshments.

Editor Brother Rudy Sefcik had a good report concerning the Vestnik.

He stated things were going great and he had a good relationship with the Publication Committee. He conveyed the best wishes of Brother and Sister Mazanec who could not be present for the meeting.

Those of you who are not receiving the Vestnik on time need to get in touch with your local postmaster. The Vestniks are sent as second class mail and should follow the first class. Brother Sefcik said sometimes the post office sets the Vestniks aside and ships them as third class mail, this may be causing some of the delay. Please check with your post office if you continue to have this problem.

Brother Sefcik concluded his report by commenting on the beautiful building of Sokol Lodge 130. He expressed the need for one just like it to be located in West.

Curator Brother Otto Hanus invited everyone to come visit the museum in Temple and see the latest addition, a collection of 183 pieces of wood carvings from an ordinary hand shovel to a replica of a

6/VESTNIt —Wednesday, March 23, 1983 cotton gin with moving parts. He says new things are donated and added to the museum nearly every day. Tourists from out-of-state continue to make it a point to visit the SPJST Museum in Temple.

There was no deferred or unfinished business from the previous meeting. Under new business, Brother Albert Banik asked for an increase in the payment for gas mileage allotment for the District III officers attending the meetings prior to the regular meeting which is two a year. No money is allowed for gas mileage to attend the regular spring and fall meetings. A motion was made by Sister Maxine Sefcik to increase the allotment to 35C a mile.

Mary Pavey seconded the motion.

The motion carried.

Report of the Auditing Committee was made by Brother John Murphy. The books were found to be in order and he moved they be accepted as read. Brother Sid Pokladnik seconded the motion. The motion carried.

Appointed to serve on the Nominating Committee are Brother Henry Breitkreutz, Sister Mary Pavey, Brother Emil Petr, Sister Willie Mae Schuetz, and Brother Ben Jarma.

The spring meeting will be held in Fort Worth and hosted by Lodge 154.

President Wood then asked the members to stand and sing "Happy Birthday" to Brother Sid Pokladnik on the 70th birthday. Brother Sid responded with, "Thank you for the nice surprise."

Winners in the Youth Club Poster Contest were Lodge 84 Dallas first place and Cottonwood Lodge 6 second place. Winners received a check from the District III Youth Fund.

Since there was no further business, President Vernon Wood adjourned the meeting.

Cottonwood Members All Set For Easter Activities Dear Members: In behalf of all the -officers of Lodge No. 6, I want to invite all our members and their families to our Lodge 6 meeting for Sunday, March 27 at 3 p.m.

Good Reports Given At Lodge Elgin Meeting The regular meeting of Lodge No. 18 was calle'd to order by Brother Gilbert Kubicek, treasurer.

President Brother Roy Simank had surgery last week and was absent, and Vice President Brother Morris Bontwell was out of town.

Brother Bo Brian led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Sister Audrey Bontwell called the roll and read the minutes of the last meeting, which were approved.

All committee reports were given and accepted. Brother Emil Mogonye presented $56.56 on behalf of the Aluminum Can Refund. A very good report was given by Dale Kessel on the kitchen; business is picking up.

We welcomed four new members, Mary Katherine Wilson, David Wayne Meyer, Elizabeth Irene Lindemann and Joseph D. Scaff.

Thanks to Brother George Diebel for cutting the grass.

Sister Janelle Mogonye sent a sympathy card to Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Klotz, and get-well cards to Roy Simank, Irene Helgren, Jim Mainer, Arthur Davis, and Robert Nelson. We wish all a speedy recovery.

A reminder is hereby given to everyone of our District II spring meeting to be held March 27 at Taylor; registration at 1 p.m.

Lodge Approves $200 For Donations Cylcone

Dear Members: Our meeting of Lodge 24 was called to order by President David Vanicek.

The flag was presented by Kristie Waits and Christy Marek who led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing in memory of our deceased members.

On the sick list we have Evelyn Jakubik who had surgery.

We welcomed our visitors Jimmy and Vonda Mayfield and their daughters, Latanya, Beba, Shauna and Dorothy Haisler also a visitor.

After reading the minutes by Secretary Pat Vanicek, the chairmen's reports and the board report by Billy Smetanka were given; we then went into old business.

The plans were completed for the 50-year pin occasion to be held Sunday, April 10 at 4 p.m. starting with the program and a covered dish meal following. All members are encouraged to come out and join us on this day; you are asked to bring a covered dish.

The Donation Committee reported to us their decision on donations to: SPJST Scholarship

Fund — $100, March of Dimes — $50, American Heart Fund — $25, and Muscular Dystrophy — $25.

The Audit Committee was appointed; namely, Marvin Wilde, Nancy Posvar, and Ben Tyroch.

New members who were accepted were Marisa Wilde (signed up by Sales Representative Laveda Geistman), Tonya Spanhel (signed up by SR Milton Zavodny), and Gary Marek (signed up by sales representative from another lodge), and transferred into our lodge was Derrick Yezak.

We want to thank Arlene Tschoener and Laverne Cabla for planting shrubs. Brought up and discussed was the mowing of the grounds for this year. After some discussion Brother Ray Coots said he would, again, take the job.

Youth Leader gave us a report; first she mentioned that the District II Skating Party was enjoyed by many and that some of our youth members won a prize. She also reminded everyone to buy their tickets for the youth barbecue which was planned for Sunday, March 20th. They also planned a country store. Tuesday, March 29 they will have a work day at the lodge; later on an Easter egg hunt followed by a meal.

Members voted to have a chili supper Friday, March 25 at 7:30 p.m.

This will be a social so you may play dominoes or other games, this is for members and their families.

President David Vanicek is having a birthday this month and those present having anniversaries were Brother Ben and Sister Regina Zabcik, and Brother Joe and Sister Bernice Sebek. To them and all others celebrating these occasions, Best Wishes!

Door prizes were won by Terry Coots, Dorothy Haisler, Sonia Castillo, and Jeffrey Posvar.

No. 47, Seaton Meeting Lodge

Dear Members and Friends: Our monthly meeting was called to order Sunday, March 6, 1983 by President. Jerry Pechal.

Timothy Wilson and Michael Kortis, flagbearers, led us in the Pledge of Allegiance after which everyone remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our deceased members, Julia Dubcak, Gilbert Green, Joe Blazek and Jerry Divis. May our departed members rest in peace and their memory live among us forever.

(Brother Joe Blazek was to receive his 50-year pin this year. The pin was taken to the funeral home by Jerry and Dorothy Pechal.)

Ann Balusek was our only visitor at this meeting.

Roll call of officers showed all present and each gave their satisfac-. tory report as did the chairpersons.

A special thanks from Evelyn Heese for the help behind the bar; also thanks from Vallie Zavodny, kitchen chairperson, for February for cakes brought to the lunch after the meeting.

Correspondence consisted of thank-you notes from the Frances Vanicek family, Jerry Divis family, Clara Hejl family and Julia Dubcak family for floral sprays, thank-you note from the Gilbert Green family for a donation of money to their favorite charity in lieu of flowers, and thank-you note from Joe Marinik for get-well card while he was in the hospital. The ASC Committee thanked the lodge for letting them use the hall to explain the PIK Program to local farmers.

Ann Koon also read a letter from the March of Dimes asking for a donation. The members voted to donate $100 to this worthy cause.

Lodge 29, Taylor had sent an invitation to our lodge asking for participants to their annual May Fete to be held May 1.

A letter was read from D. I. Bohac, District II president, pertaining to the District II meeting March 27 at Taylor Lodge 29 at 2 p.m.

New members accepted into our lodge were: Donna Jane Mikulas, Ty Allen Horton, Monica Renee Guenat, Natalie Nannette Morris, Jason Dent Morris, Paul Wayne Sutter and Shirley Ruth Thompson. We welcome all of these members and hope you can come to our meetings and other activities.

Reported on the sick list were: Joe Marinik, Kitty Sodek, Hulon Ross, Jerry Sefcik, Vlasta Havlik, Ernest Johnson, John Jakubec, Sara Kohutek and Edgar Lorenz. We wish all of you a speedy recovery.

Special Entertainment Set At Lodge 74, Lovelady Dear Members and Guests: The regular monthly meeting was held at Lovelady Lodge 74 Monday, at 7:30 p.m.

President James Wilcox opened the meeting and Vice President Andy Fowler led the assembly in the Pledge of Allegiance.

All officers were present except Youth Leader Linda Michka, also all trustees were present, except Severn Rodgers and Hughie Smith.

All reports were read and approved. Chester Shmoldas, our ground chairman, reported he had planted flowers and worked on the general landscaping of the grounds; since this will be our 10th anniversary, he wants our lodge to be exceptionally pretty.

Our youth club participated in the Lovefest held at Lovelady. They had a food booth to make money and the square dancers danced to everyone's enjoyment.

I would like to remind our members, their families and guests of an important date, which is April 23rd. We will have Kelly Schoppa and the Amarillo Band playing for us. Kelly is known for "Amarillo By Morning" and "How Do You Mend A Broken Heart?" For this night only, our dance will be from 8:30 until 1:30 a.m.; you will note that is one hour of extra dancing, and admission for this night will be $3 per member and $4 per guest. We invite you all to come hear this upcoming recording artist.

Chester and Mildred Shmoldas reported they had a wonderful time this past weekend at the Mayan Dude Ranch in Bandera, Texas.

I would like to boast, once again, that Chester Shmoldas, our sales representative, was Number I in sales for District II this past year.

One of our youngest members (if not the youngest member) will be having a birthday this next week who will be one-year-old. Happy Birthday, Adam Melson!

1984 Convention Committee Meets ...

The

Lodge 79 in Corpus Christi held its monthly meeting March 9, 1983 at 7 p.m.

The meeting was called to order

by President Veselka and the roll call showed all officers and fourteen members present, including Honorary President John Stasa.

Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved followed by the reports of the other officers and committee chairmen.

It was indicated that we have not received the 50-year pins, but that they should be here in time for presentation at our April meeting; also two members Carrie Veselka and Joseph Sijansky were previously overlooked as also receiving their 50-year pins this year.

Two new members Christopher and Kimberly Brezina were

announced by Financial Secretary Millie Elzner. The policies were sold

by Brother Jerry Elzner.

Monta Foster, Convention Committee Chairman, called for a meeting of the committee for Wednesday, March 16th at 7:30 p.m.

This committee consists of Monta Foster, Frank Veselka, Peggy Tepera and Mack Munson.

It was voted by the members to discontinue the monthly door prize after this month and try to come up with another idea of drawing members to our meeting. This month's door prize was won by Roy Peal.

The youth club report was given

by Assistant Youth Leader Virginia Rebecek who indicated that the group made Valentines for grandparents in February and gave prizes for the best judged. Their next meeting was to be held March 11th and they were going to make kites. Sister Rebecek also announced that there will be an Easter egg hunt and party for the juniors March 25th, so all you interested juniors plans on attending.

The Sick Committee reported visiting several members in the hospital the past two months. It seems we've finally gotten most of our members back on the road to recovery. Brother Sacky is recuperating at home and is due to re-enter the hospital for additional surgery soon. It was indicated that Joe Fey is still at Spohn Hospital.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:40 p.m.

Additional Lodge 79 News There hasn't been much activity in Lodge 79, but, again, it won't be long before things will have to start moving towards preparations for the convention.

The Convention Committee is having its first meeting March 16th and should have something to report at our next meeting. We'd still like to see more members at our meetings so let's come out and get involved.

College spring break is upon us and here in Corpus Christi, the beach always beckons the young people; some of our young people are home for spring break are James Tepera, Timothy Elzner, Wendy Pesek and Michelle Pesek from Texas A&M University. A guest of Michelle's was Bill Koehnen of Dallas. We hope all our students enjoyed their break and will have a successful school year.

Lodge Receives American Flag Needville

SPJST Lodge No. 81 met for its regular monthly meeting March 13, with President Charlie Matcek presiding.

The meeting was called to order at 2 p.m. and Sister Benita Waizel led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag. Everyone remained standing in silence as a tribute to our deceased member, Brother LeRoy Kamas. Brother Kamas was a devoted lodge member, having served as our sales representative

for many years. We express our heartfelt sympathy to his wife and family. May he rest in peace.

All officers answered the roll call.

Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes of the previous meeting.

Thank you cards were read from the Richmond State School and the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II in Needville for our monetary contribution.

Financial Secretary Jo Ann Morgan gave her report. Willie Mae Kuykendall gave the treasurer's report. Special Fund Treasurer Gilbert Walzel gave the financial report and also reported on the activities scheduled at the hall for the coming month All of these reports were accepted as given.

Reported on the sick list were Vlasta Holt and Lydia Sabrsula.

Sister Frances Sitta is at home after a two-week stay at the hospital and is recuperating nicely. Willie Kocurek and Henry Hurta are in the hospital. May all of you be on the road to recovery.

We were all glad to have Sister Stefanie Waizel with us at the luncheon and at the meeting. Sister Waizel is a resident at our Rest Home here, and loves to come out when her health permits.

President Matcek urged the members to attend the District V meeting at Lodge 172 in Pasadena held March 20th.

We thank Waizel Jeep for the donation of American flags to the Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts and Lodge No. 81.

• We have two members receiving the 50-year membership pins, Sister Lydia Spurney was not able to be present, but Brother Bill Zemanek received his in person from President Charlie Matcek. We were glad to have Brother Bill's family present; do come back, again.

We will have one more day meeting and again we will have a luncheon prior to our meeting.

Refund checks were handed out and the attendance prizes were won

by President Matcek and Sister Tillie Mikeska.

Everyone enjoyed the fried chicken luncheon and all the delicious side dishes served at 12:30 p.m. brought by the ladies.

The Saturday night dance, with music by John Sullivan, turned out to be a very nice affair. The ballroom sparkled with lovely-dressed ladies escorted by handsome men. The 13member orchestra, dressed in black tuxedos, looked elegant against the red velvet-draped stage. The dance was not a sellout, but a nice attendance was enjoying the ballroom music.

The dance was in charge of Gus Urbanovsky, who also attended to the box office. His spouse, Ann, dressed in a long-pleated, white skirt topped with a beautiful, red blouse, helped by Leeland Hensley, was seating the guests. His spouse, Dorothy, dressed in a beaded, black gown, greeted the arriving guests at the door. Earline Hoffman, dressed in a heaven-blue-chiffon gown attended the cloakroom. In the lobby Erna O'Conner with her sister, Irene Slovacek, were busy taking reservations for the Al Pierson Big Band USA dance for Saturday, March 26; both were dressed in lovely gowns to blend in with t he occasion. If you wish to make reservations for this dance, please call 869-5767; our secretaries will help you.

The Choral Club resumed rehearsals which are, as usual, Tuesday from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. accompanied by Naomi Spencer on t he piano. Every fourth Wednesday in the month, we rehearse with our Czech Concert Orchestra under the direction of Rudy Dybala. If you love to sing, why don't you come out, and join us?

At this dance March 12th, six couples surrounded one table to celebrate the 40th wedding anniversary of Harry and Mickey Rice. They pledged their wedding vows March 13, 1943. After t he dance, Harry and Mickey invited their guests to enjoy a delicious breakfast in our lodge dining room, served by Annie Vala.

Many of our sick members are still in the hospital at the time I am writing these lines. Elsie (Dvorak) Kadera is still confined in the hospital at Dallas, feeling slightly improved after her therapy treatments, but no sign of being released.

Joseph Koci also is still in Memorial City Hospital which is three weeks now, better one day and a setback next day. Anna Koci, his wife, is very much concerned. Anna Svestka is still confined in Bellaire General Hospital over a month now; she was supposed to be released to go home last week, but had a setback and more tests are to be taken this week.

To all these we wish a speedy recovery including those unknown

sick.

With sorrow in our hearts we bid farewell to our member, Jarrtes E. Chernosky, who died in McAllen, Arizona 6 March 1983 at the age of 54. Survivors are one sister, Joyce Rayward of Leusanna, Switzerland; one sister-in-law, Norma Chernosky; two nephews and two nieces.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 8 at 2 p.m. in the Central Presbyterian Church.

James, as I knew him, was a happy and lovely person, and the younger son of our well-known, the late Judge C. H. Chernosky who served as Judge in Fort Bend County for many years and as president of our great Order SPJST for 20 years. I remember James' mother, the late Vlasta Chernosky, when we lived in Rosenberg, Texas, she would walk to town holding the hand of her firstborn, Charles, age five, (now also deceased); she was a gracious lady taking part in many city activities, especially on national holidays, (as Fourth of July) she organized programs and rehearsed the national anthem with a group of young people (of which I was one).

The streets were not paved, just plain dirt streets and programs were conducted from flat-bed wagons and she would accompany the singers on her piano. Vlasta Chernosky also belonged to our Birthday Club and contributed her share. I have memories of a gracious lady. Charles, the older, was a fine outstanding person and his brother, James, a loveable individual with love in his heart for everyone. May he rest in peace.

We bow our heads with sorrow in our hearts in the passing away of Mrs. Rosie Kosut; she died March 8, 1983 at the age of 94 years. Her husband preceded her in death 19 November 1972. Funeral services were held Thursday, March 10 in the Heights Funeral Chapel, with Father Joseph Szymczak officiating.

She was laid to rest in the Brookside Cemetery. Survivors are three sons, Joseph Jr., Frank and John Kosut, all of Houston; seven grandsons; and three great-grandchildren. The grandsons served their grandmother for the last time as pallbearers.

I remember Mrs. Rosie Kosut when she and her late husband, Joseph Kosut, would attend all functions at the lodge, especially the Czech plays when their son, Frank, had a part in them. Later she was not seen so often after her husband passed away. She lived with her oldest son, Joseph, and was really active to the very end; she still worked out in the garden, in the house and enjoyed sports, knew all the names of celebrities and, on Sundays, read her Czech Bible; she lived a full life to the very end. May she rest in peace.

The three sons are living monument of the Kosut family; Joseph Jr., is the living image of his deceased father; Frank, with three handsome sons and three grandchildren, the youngest, Johnnie, with his spouse, Mary, are very active in Lodge No. 88 and reared four handsome sons. The Kosut family, with seven young men, will perpetuate the Kosut name forever.

A sincere heartfelt sympathy to the family of Rosie Kosut.

News From Lodge No. 92, Ft. Worth Our regular monthly meeting was held March 13, 1983 with a good attendance. Committee chairpersons gave their reports.

Birthday cards were sent to members reaching 65 or older during month of February. Get well cards were sent to members confined in hospitals and at home.

Sympathy cards were sent to families of our departed members.

Visitors and members, who have not been present recently, were introduced and welcomed.

Lodge 154 Ft. Worth To Host District III Meeting Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting yesterday was called to order by our vice president, Brother Don Steinman.

All officers were present, except our president, Brother Jerry Milan; he had to be at the Airport at that time and our youth leader, Sister Carolyn Cleveland was out-of-town.

The youth club will have their meeting this week.

Brother Steinman made welcome our longtime members, Brother Joe and Sister Agnes Merlick. We enjoyed having you, come back soon!

All the reports were approved as read.

Thank you notes were read from the family of Sister Angeline Slovak, Brother Carl Zich and Sister Mary Pavey.

A new candidate accepted was Julie Woolsey. We welcome you!

Brother Steinman reported on the sales representatives' seminar that was held at the Supreme Lodge.

Everyone was reminded of the District III meeting for April 10th.

We would like to invite the Supreme Lodge officers (we know they are busy, but if you have the time, we welcome you) and also our Editor Rudy Sefcik and Sister Maxine Sefcik. (Directions to the meeting location are at the end of my writeup.)

We ask the sisters to bring pastries for the dinner.

Our Easter Picnic along with Sokol Fort Worth was discussed and will be Easter Sunday, April 3rd at Tirk's Farm same as in the previous years. It will be as in the past: you bring your food, refreshments, a dozen colored eggs, your folding chairs and card tables; arriving time is after 10 a.m.

Directions for those who have never attended are: Go out old Highway 121 to Colleyville, to Pleasant Run Road (Bank on the left, Burris Grocery on the right), turn left (at bank) and go to 6805 Pleasant Run, R. L. Alholm's name will be on the mailbox and it's the first house on your right after you cross the railroad tracks. Games and egg hunt will begin about 2 p.m. We hope the weather permits.

We want to wish a speedy recovery to Sister Nancy Krupka and Brother Albert Wruble. They were both just released from the hospital after having surgery.

Trey Steinman is on a 6-week tour with the Texas Boys Choir and they performed Saturday night in Carnegie Hall. He called home and was quite excited. Get home safely, Trey!

We extend our congratulations to Brother Jeff and Sister Natalie Maly on their 10th wedding anniversary, March 20th.

Everyone enjoyed "The Gentres" at our last dance, so we will have them back Saturday, April 2nd.

Brother Benny Pavey was our door prize winner.

The meeting adjourned to goodies and refreshments and a social and domino games were enjoyed by all.

Reports Heard At Lodge 177 Academy

Good

President Jerry Tomastik called our March 9 lodge meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. He then led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

Lodge Secretary Dorothy Lisenbe read the minutes from our February 9 meeting. They were approved as read.

Josie Tomastik, our lodge financial secretary, gave an excellent report. Our lodge is doing great financially, of which our members are very happy and proud.

The reports from the committee chairpersons were great!

Dorothy Massey, Bingo chairman, reported that Bingo every Tuesday night is doing real well. She reports that she has plenty help and appreciates those who do come and help.

Kitchen Chairman Juanita Ramm's report also shows that kitchen is doing very good. Juanita has been chairman several times and she really knows how to run it smooth/y. She and Assistant Kitchen Chairman Libby Bartek turnout some mighty good food and we do appreciate you two very much!

Reports from the bar by Chairman Wilbert Ramm were also excellent. The bar is doing great financially and has a good supply on hand in the store room. (We missed you at the meeting, Wilbert and do hope you are feeling better very soon. Your wife, Juanita, did a great job of giving your report for you.)

President Tomastik then read the three letters he had received.

One was from the pastor of the Little River United Methodist Church, conveying their thanks and appreciation for the use of our lodge, for their Lay meeting that was held Thursday, March 3rd.

Another was from the March of Dimes, requesting a contribution from our lodge. President Tomastik made a motion to contribute $25 to them. The motion passed and carried and all agreed to the contribution.

He then read the third letter from District II President D. I. Bohac, inviting the youth of Lodge 177 to participate in the talent program to be held at Taylor Lodge 29 on March 27th.

Brother Louis Driska read a thank you note from his wife, Sister Jean Driska, for all the get-well cards and visits she has received during her illness. Sister Driska, we do miss you and we pray you will soon be well.

Our Lodge Vice President Walter Jezek gave his report on the Trustees' meeting.

Brother Bruce Tomastik made the suggestion to have our lodge emblem painted on the wall. It was voted on and approved to have it on the wall by the bar.

President Tomastik said he would contact the man he knows, to have this done as soon as possible.

Brother Bruce Tomastik also gave a report on the FFA at Academy School and requested the use of our lodge hall for a dance as a moneymaking project for April 1st. A motion was made and carried to let them use the hall on April 1st.

An Easter Telethon will be held at our lodge Sunday, March 13th.

It was reported that Sister Gladys Odjeska (Frankie) is in the hospital.

Members of Lodge 177 wish you also a very speedy recovery.

We have a new member in our lodge; namely, Jeanne Kay Coufal.

The members of Lodge 177 welcome you, so please come to our next lodge meeting which will be held the second Wednesday, April 13th.

179 Warrenton Makes Charitable Donation Lodge

Dear Members and Friends: Thursday night, March 10 at 7:30 p.m. President Harold Bergmann called the regular monthly meeting to order with the Executive Board present and also a nice group of members.

The president led the assembly in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Then he requested members to remain standing for a moment of silence in tribute to the loss of our devoted charter member, Brother Alfred Siptak. May he rest in peace.

Our sympathy is extended to the bereaved family.

Jeanette Schoenst read the minutes of the previous meeting.

Brother Lee Leonhardt gave the treasurer's report; both were accepted as given.

Brother Arnold Peters read the financial standing. Refund checks were then distributed.

The Activity Committee stated game cards will be here by the next meeting.

Our lodge voted to contribute to the Junior Livestock Show to be held in March.

The Food Committee stated there will be a "Pot Luck" supper; that is members bring a single dish of their choice consisting of meat, vegetable or dessert for the April 14th meeting; youth club meets at 7 p.m., adults at 7:30 p.m. At this meeting the youth club will entertain the group with party games.

There was no further business and meeting adjourned. Immediately afterwards all enjoyed cold cuts and a great variety of delicious cakes, pies, cookies and refreshments.

Latest from Lodge 183, Mid-Cities

Dear Members: Saturday, March 12th the monthly dance was at the lodge and there was a large crowd in attendance, t everyone had a good time.

The dance floor was crowded all night and the music Ay the Shamrocks was good: they were wearing green vests and sang a few Irish songs, along with a lot of good

country and western songs that everyone liked.

The Decorating Committee did a swell job of decorating the hall for St. Patrick's Day. A little color makes a lot of difference.

Also, a member in a little green hat brought a large pot of Irish stew to be given away to anyone present who wanted some. It was very good!

Nothing like having Irish stew, a country and western band, and a group of Czechs to enjoy it all.

Thanks again, Phill Boyle, it was very thoughtful of you to bring the stew.

Sunday was meeting day again and a small group attended the meeting; all reports were read and approved. Several motions were approved. One to buy an airconditioner for the kitchen, to repair the central unit over the dance floor, also, a filing cabinet for the lodge to keep all of the lodge's books and papers in, also to buy a camera for the lodge because there have been several requests to have more pictures in the Vestnik plus a motion to give a $50 gift to any high school student member of the lodge who graduates from high school.

Inez Greenlees was appointed to serve on the Building Committee to fill the place that B. J. Hlavaty vacated when he resigned.

Due to so many members and officers being on vacations during the summer, the members voted to cancel lodge meetings during June, July, and August this year.

Phill reported that he and the builder would be going to Temple to talk to the Supreme Lodge officers Monday, March 14th about the plans for the new building for the lodge; let's wish him well and hope that soon all of you members can start planning the new building.

On the sick list we have Pat Sill and Eugene Havran; let's hope they get out of the hospital and get well soon: hope we haven't missed anyone.

Voted on and approved this month was James Carroll as a new member; welcome to Lodge 183, James!

Phill reported that the soccer team that the lodge is sponsoring is doing great with three wins and only one loss, so you members need to get behind them and show that you really care about them and support the team.

Well, maybe, I have spoiled you members already because some of you members have told me that you are disappointed when there is no letter for Lodge 183 in the Vestnik each week, so I will try to do better in the future and have something for you. Remember everything is changing. You can't rely on nothing any more. Remember when they used to say "Dirt Cheap"? Go out and buy top soil sometime!

Stamps of the world is another outstanding display which contains stamps from 161 countries of the world no two alike. Countries unheard of in today's fast-moving world like AZADHIND, ANDORRA, ASCENSION BAHAWALPUR, EPIRUS, ERITREA SAYCHELLES, TRAVANCOR, TOUVA, TOGO, and 151 more; this famous collection was collected by Josef Pestal of Billings, Montana.

Our genealogy section, in the library, has been quite active of late, many members and friends are trying to put together their family history and we have a rich source of genealogical information. We ship many books to readers all over the USA and quite a few to Canada. We loan our books on these terms: If you come after them and return them in person, there is NO CHARGE; if we have to pack and mail them, you pay postage both ways. We loan our books on a sixty-day basis but, should you be unable to finish on time, all you need to do is drop us a -SPJSTcard or letter and we will extend Library, your time. We will be happy to send you a list of our books on your request.

It has been some time since I have Fraternally yours, been able to give you a report on our Otto Hanus, CuratorLAM department and the progress Librarian we have made in the past three Thelma Bartos, assistant months.

It is a musical my mother, who had been ill for album that should be in every home and we will be happy to mail you one about two and a half years, passed for $5 postpaid or you may pick up away February 5th.

My family and I would like to one while seeing the museum for thank all of our friends for the many only $4.50.

We would also like for someone to expressions of friendship and love, donate an old violin and guitar; even the get-well, and sympathy cards though our musical display is plus memorial offerings.

Looking forward to seeing you all complete, these are two instruments we do not have and they do not have March 27th!

Sister Mary Kosut, our sunshine reporter, was not at the meeting because of the loss of her mother-inlaw, Mrs. Rosie Kosut. Our sincere sympathy is expressed to the Kosut family.

Sister Kathy Trefel reminded the sisters to help with the sale in June.

Sister Willie Mae Stang is still recovering from the flu.

Sister Ima Lero donated a pillow to the Birthday Club and it was won

by Sister Elizabeth Bily.

Sister Pearl Hanka donated an Easter egg and it was won by Sister Evelyn Mikolas.

Head of the Youth Department STATEWIDE YOUTH LEADERS' RETREAT Another recommendation was that we hold this year's Statewide Youth Leaders' Retreat at Camp Val Verde May 14th and 15th for all DYCs, assistant DYCs, youth leaders and assistants, including spouses. The training would begin

Saturday morning and last through Sunday noon. It is expected that some of those desiring to attend will want to arrive sometime Friday evening or Friday night in order to be ready for the training Saturday morning. This recommendation was approved by the Supreme Lodge.

The Supreme Lodge will pay for the leasing of Camp Val Verde for that period, all meals, and mileage for one car from each lodge. This will probably require some arrangements on car pooling so that we do not have to pay, mileage to every individual coming by automobile. As in the case of Longhorn, we are asking that you come prepared to stay for the duration of the training from Saturday morning through Sunday noon. No remuneration for mileage will be paid for those who do not stay for the entire training period. I think the reason for this is obvious. If you do have to go back home Saturday night, we ask that you return again Sunday morning with mileage reimbursement for only one round trip.

We hope you will be making plans to attend this Youth Leaders' Retreat because there is much valuable information to be gained pertaining to all facets of our youth program. If you plan to attend, please send us your name, lodge number, the total number of persons coming with you, and a statement to the effect that you will be present for the entire training session. For purposes of finalizing lodging and meal arrangements, we are asking that you notify us no later than Monday, May 9th.

The District IV Training Class was changed from March 12th to April 9th. This meeting will start at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday at my home.

Jann Wilson will meet with us and we plan to review all the rules for our youth program. This meeting is open to anyone who is interested in our SPJST Youth Program in District IV. It is my desire to see some new faces at this meeting.

We will have a covered dish luncheon at noon, so this should save some time and we can be through earlier.

Our District IV meeting will be April 24 at Wall, Texas, so the youth will have the same contests as other years.

1)Each youth club may have a skit or number on the program, or any youth members from any of the other lodges may do the same.

2) A booth of items for sale or anything that they think will sell.

Each booth keeps their proceeds.

YAD will be held Sunday, June 12 at Seymour, at the Senior Recreation Center. Youth members, be thinking of entering all you can so we can have a big YAD this year.

March 6th they had a kite-flying contest. It was a pretty day for flying kites. The kites were judged in the following order: prettiestTerry Hykel, oddest-Karen Hykel, smallest-Tammi Dobecka, best homemade-Shirley Dobecka, highest flying-Kevin Dobecka. All the kites were so pretty in the sky. I want to thank Brother and Sister Ray Perez for judging the kites.

March 8th the youth members enjoyed skating at the Skateworld and the adults enjoyed watching them.

March 9th a youth program was presented by them at the West Rest Haven.

Youth Club members are working on Easter baskets; little toy boxes from milk cartons, also started on our scrapbook.

Our next meeting will be March 27 with the Youth Club meeting at 2 p.m. and lodge meeting at 3 p.m. A youth program will be held right after the meeting, Easter egg hunt, and fried chicken supper will follow.

Everyone is asked to bring a covered dish enough for all the members who plan to come and bring their family and a friend.

The Youth Club will be selling tickets on Tupperware items, Easter basket, Easter rabbit plus some other things.

Our club members will have a bake sale April 1st at the Leroy Bank from 5 p.m. until 6 p.m., so everyone please try to bring some goodies.

Three new members were welcomed to our club; namely, Michelle and Andrew Zapletal and Brandi Collard.

Two members Joyce Trojacek and Vicki Martinek were present whom we haven't seen in a long time. We hope to see you more often.

Plans were made to have an Easter egg hunt Sunday, March 27 at 2 p.m. Each person is asked to bring six eggs.

We have been busy selling tickets for our fund-raising project. Our Youth Leader Aden Rejcek said that YAD is not that far away and we should begin working on our entries now.

After the meeting was-adjourned, we drove to Dallas to Chuck-ECheese's Pizza Time Theatre to enjoy an afternoon of delicious pizza and exciting games. The grownups had as much (or maybe more) fun as the kids.

Born 4 August 1892, Sister Hejtmancik was the daughter of the late John and Frances (Dusek) Jurcak. She was married to Rudolph Hejtmancik who preceded her in death.

Survivors include two sons, Dr. Milton Hejtmancik of Beaumont, Texas and Dr Jame Harold Hejtmancik of Waco; one daughter, Grace Ward of Grand Junction, Colorado; one sister, Mrs. Lidie Mae Kruppa of Houston; and 12 grandchildren.

Mrs. Vanicek was born in Seaton and was married to Otto V. Vanicek in 1917. They resided in the Doubleheader community until the late 1940's when they moved to Temple.

She had devoted her life to her family and church and always had a kind word and a helping hand for her many, many friends. She was a member of Temple Brethren Church.

Her husband died in 1973.

Survivors are four sons: Leroy Vanicek of Carrollton, Johnie Vanicek, Otto Vanicek, Jr., and Bill Vanicek, all of Temple; a daughter, Mrs. Eugene (Betty) Engbrock of Temple; three sisters, Rosie Strnad, Annie Kristinek and Julia Chlapek, all of Temple; a brother, Lewis Jez, Sr. of Temple; 18 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Letter ZIPS To Wrong Address COTOPAXI, Colo. (AP) - A letter mailed from Tokyo to China ended up in this southern Colorado town, and it stumped the postmaster the address was in Japanese.

Postmaster John Young can't read Japanese, so he began looking for someone who could. He ended up at the Yakata Restaurant in Canon City, a Japanese restaurant where one owner was born in Japan.

The letter turned out to be a personal letter written to a Japanese living in Peking. The street address in Peking was 81223, written in Arabic numerals, which are sometimes used in Japan.

Cotopaxi's ZIP code is 81223. Why the letter crossed the Pacific Ocean is a mystery, Young said. He suspects it was put in the wrong overseas bag.

The Heart of Texas Association of Life Underwriters vigorously objects to certain sales approaches to sell "deposit term" insurance to replace whole life insurance when those approaches are inaccurate, incomplete or otherwise mislead the public.

If you now hold a permanent, cash-value life insurance policy (whole life) and are approached about replacing it with a "Deposit Term" (also known as Modified Premium Renewable Term), you should demand a written statement outlining what guarantees are involved with the "Deposit Term" policy. You should then call your own life insurance agent or your life insurance company and ask for a comparison statement between your present whole life policy and the offered "Deposit Teen" policy. Then make your decision on replacing — after you have ALL THE FACTS.
