Douglas Jasek A 1982 Samuel Clemens High School graduate, Douglas Jasek, received the Texas A&M University Dean's Honor Award for outstanding academic achievement in the College of Engineering for the fall semester of 1982.

Many of the 4,000 lives and billions of dollars in property lost each year to residential fires could be saved — if householders would take precautions.

Whether you live in a single-family home or an apartment building, you can take some basic steps to insure your family's safety. Here are some tips from the Insurance Information Institute: Eliminate hazards. Keep trash in covered containers and dispose of it regularly. Store paints, thinners and other flammable materials in their original containers — away from fire sources. Don't overload electric circuits or use frayed electric cords.

Never run a cord under rugs or behind curtains.

Install smoke detectors. Place one detector near the bedrooms. You may wish to put others on each additional level of the house. If the detectors are battery powered, check often to see that the batteries are fresh.

Develop escape plan. Make sure each household member is familiar with the layout of each floor, including location of windows, doors, and stairways. Work out two escape routes from each room, and hold frequent fire drills— with some at night —so that everybody can act quickly in an emergency. Assign someone to be responsible for the elderly or the very young. Designate a meeting place outside the home for everyone to gather after escaping.

Once outside, count heads, stay together, and don't go back into the house for belongings.

If fire occurs. Stay calm — it will increase your chances of survival.

Remember that smoke rises. It also kills. Thus, it's best to crawl to safety. Before opening an inside door, feel the knob with the back of your hand; the fire may be just outside. If the knob is hot, open only with extreme caution.

Apartment fires. If you live in a high-rise building, don't use the elevator. It could stall because of heat or loss of power. Before entering stairwells, check for smoke. If you must remain in your apartment, close all vents and air ducts. Stuff wet towels and sheets around the doors. Open a window slightly to let smoke escape. Don't break the window because you may need to close it again. Don't jump—you may not survive the fall. *** How do you know how much money you've paid into Social Security? You can get a computer printout of your Social Security earnings record for free from the Social Security Administration. All you need to do is get a, postcard from the nearest Social Security office and mail it in *** If you got a lump-sum distribution last year from a Keogh retirement plan and want to use 10-year income averaging to cut the tax bite, don't be misled by a mistake in the Internal Revenue Service's instruction booklet for Form 1040.

The booklet erroneously says that the 10-year averaging technique can't be used for distributions from either Keoghs or individual retirement accounts. In fact, the ban applies to IRA's — not to Keoghs. ***

SFM Smith held dinner/seminar at Bryan and Brenham along with District I Director Ben Trcalek.

Out of the 56 sales representatives in Dist. I, 18 were in attendance at these seminars, along with their spouses. We appreciate the efforts of these sales representatives and urge those not present to join us in keeping abreast of the changing times of the 80s.

District V Meeting This Sunday, Lodge 172 Pasadena Dear Members, Lodge 172 officers and members and we, District V officers, hope to see you this Sunday at the district meeting at Lodge 172, 3609 Preston, Pasadena. They are working hard to make it a most pleasant day for you and your family.

A delicious barbecue beef dinner with the trimmings and coffee or tea will be served from 11:00 to 1:00 p.m.

Director Tim Kostom and the Lodge 88 Choral Club and Director Rudy Dybala and the Czech Concert Orchestra will entertain during the noon hour. All you good cooks, the lodge will surely appreciate any pastry donations.

Beautification Plans In Store For Lodge Cottonwood The monthly meeting of the SPJST Lodge No. 6 was called to order by President Robert Dobecka at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 6, 1983.

President Dobecka asked Terry Hykel and Keith Hykel to lead the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance. Terry then recited the SPJST Pledge. Everyone remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of Brother Ed Hykel and Brother Louis Snokhous.

Roll call of officers was called by Secretary Barbara Hykel with all officers being present. There were 23 members present.

Secretary Barbara Hykel read the minutes from the previous meeting.

They were approved as read. All other reports were in order.

Correspondence was read from the Ed Hykel family and Louis Snokhous family.

Sister Willie Mae Schuetz gave the youth club report. The youth members went to the Rest Home February 9 and they gave the residents their Valentines and candy. They will be going to the rest home March 9th. February 11 the club had their Valentine Party.

Everyone had a good time. February 22 the membership made sauerkraut for Westfest. Some of the youth club members helped in this project. The youth club has started making Easter baskets and small -toy boxes.

4/VESTNIK — Wednesday, March 16, 1983 They have also started working on their scrapbook. The youth will be selling tickets for the drawing to be held at the Easter Party. There will be several items to be drawn for.

Lodge No. 66 (Linden Hall) donated $100 to the Therese Dobecka Scholarship Fund. The youth club leaders and family of Therese wishes to thank Lodge No. 66 for the generous donation towards the memorial scholarship fund set-up in her memory. The youth members are looking forward to seeing everyone come out for the Easter Party.

Brother Johnny Krizan gave the Board of Trustees' report. The Board recommends that the lodge put masonite on the wall behind the bar, tile on the part of the kitchen floor that is not covered, to plant 2 to 4 trees on the premises and to increase the monetary amount on memorial wreaths. The annual picnic will be July 17, 1983.

Everyone remember March 27 is our Easter party, program, Easter egg hunt and fried chicken supper!

Each member is asked to bring a covered dish to go with the chicken.

New adult members accepted into the membership were Ronnie Kroll, Elaine Halamik, Thelma Huseby and William Powell.

The $10 door prize drawn was for Delores Dobecka (not present); $9.00 progressive door prize, Anton Kaluza (not present); and the $2 door prize was won by Fred Monthei.

The next Board of Trustees' meeting will be Friday, March 25, 1983 at 8 p.m. The next Youth Club meeting will be March 27 at 2 p.m.

Next regular lodge monthly meeting will be Sunday, March 27 at 3 p.m., with the Youth Club program and Easter egg hunt following. At 5 p.m. supper will be served. We are looking forward to everyone coming out for the Easter Party.

6/VESTNiK — Wednesday, March 16, 1983 The first rehearsal was held Wednesday with the Czech Concert Orchestra with Rudy Dybala director. Tuesdays we have Naomi Spencer on the piano. We almost had a 100% attendance. We were happy to have George Pustejovsky with us again to take his place in the Chorus with Frances, his spouse; also Elsie Post came with her husband, Melvin, after her siege in the hospital; she comes with Melvin and claims she cannot sing but loves to listen. Our next performance will be in Pasadena at Lodge 172 for the District V meeting.

Lodge 88 Youth Leader Linda Wehring extends an invitation to all the youth from age 6 to 17 to come and join the Lodge No. 88 Youth Club and participate in youth activities offered to them. Please, parents, encourage your children to join and enjoy the program.

Seaton Choral Club News Spirits were high; conversation and laughter were light and gay as the Seaton Choral Club met to sing Tuesday night • 11 at the Seaton Star Hall. Everyone was happy to see Henry Janacek among us and to have him accompany us on his accordion. President Dorothy Morris presided at the business meeting; Lillian Mikulec, assistant sec'y.treasurer, read the minutes of the previous meeting. Thelma Bartosh sec'y.-treasurer gave the treasurer's report and, also reported that 39 members had paid their dues. On behalf of the club, Dorothy Morris and Martha Klusacek presented a plaque of appreciation to Helen and Henry Janacek for the years Henry has served as the accordion accompanist for the Seaton Choral Club. To celebrate the event, Martha Klusacek made and donated a large cake which was decorated by Shirley Franklin and inscribed "Helen and Henry, our thanks, Seaton Choral Club". We are happy to announce that Henry Janacek has consented to be our accompanist for the coming year.

The club voted to participate in the Buckholts Senior Citizen Program to be presented March 25.

Czech Heritage Society of Texas

The Czech Heritage Society of Texas will hold a genealogy workshop in Lavaca County April 10, 1983. The workshop, which will be held in the St. Mary's parish hall on farm road 340 west of Hallettsville, will start Sunday afternoon at 1 and last until 4. Registration fee will be $1.

The workshop is intended to help Texas Czechs and Moravians research their family history. It will feature a panel of specialists in the field of Texas Czech genealogical research. Topics of discussion will include county records, church records, tombstone inscriptions, United States census records, villages or origin, ship passenger lists, publications and research in Czechoslovakia.

Following the panel discussion a Lavaca County chapter of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas will be organized and officers will be elected.

The workshop will end with a genealogy swap session. Texas Czechs and Mora vians are

encouraged to bring their own research and family records so they can make contacts with other family historians and exchange information.

Patek Orchestra Retires The End of an Era ...

The Final Song Hundreds of folks crowded around the stage in the American Legion Hall shortly after midnight, New Year's Day, to witness the End of an Era as the Joe Patek Orchestra played their final song ever. The Patek Band has been part of this community since 1920, when Joe's father, John Patek, Sr., started the group. The final song the band played was the orchestra's theme song ... The Shiner Song.

Although the weather was miserable — cold and wet — it didn't stop hundreds of folks from packing the American Legion Hall in Shiner last Friday to witness the end of an era.

Joe Patek and his orchestra were on the stage for their final performance ever, and people from as far away as Corpus Christi and Houston joined a multitude of Shiner folks to leave standing room only at the annual Firemen's New Year's Eve Dance.

You could tell there was something special about the evening, besides the arrival of a New Year. Hundreds of flashes went off before the dance ever started as people watched the Patek Orchestra set the stage and tune up for the last time. The flashes continued throughout the night.

Charles Veit, Sr., an original member of the Patek band who was hospitalized earlier last week, was even behind the drums as the band warmed up. Other members of the Patek Orchestra during the final performance included Daniel Malik, Robert Werner, Leonard A. Darilek, his son Paul Darilek and, of course, Joseph Patek, Sr. Shortly after 8 p.m., a roar of approval filled the air when the Patek Orchestra kicked off the evening with their theme song — "The Shiner Song."

It was followed by hours of smooth enjoyable, entertaining music which filled the dance floor song after song. You almost wondered if the Patek band sounded this good when it just started over 60 years ago.

Joe's father, John Patek, Sr., started the Patek Orchestra back in 1920. Year after year, song after song, folks in south Texas enjoyed the music of the Patek Orchestra at hundreds of different dance halls across the state.

But several months ago, Mr. Joe decided it was time to quit, and Friday's New Year's Eve dance was the last in the book.

"It's just time to quit, that's all there is to it," says Patek, who turned 75 last September. He says he hopes to spend more time with his family now, and that could spread "Mr. Joe" pretty thin. He has seven children, all grown, and 28 grandchildren.

"If I wanted to go out somewhere on the weekend with the kids, I never could on account of the music," says Patek. "Things will be different now."

When the band cranked up the music to "Auld Lang Syne" at midnight last week, the hugs, kisses and wishes for a happy new year stole the show momentarily.

But everyone turned their attention back to the stage to watch and listen as the songs of the Patek band became numbered.

Hundreds of folks gathered around the stage shortly after 12:30 a.m. to witness the final few songs.

And there were tears in the eyes of many as the Joe Patek Orchestra played "The Shiner Song" in closing an era of music.

The handshakes, hugs and congratulations that followed were all well deserved for a band that had become part of Shiner's history.

The orchestra ceased to exist as of Jan. 1, 1983, and was honored recently at Taiton Community Center where they played for the last time.

A petition signed by five hundred (500) community citizens and dancers from that area was presented by George Fucik, president of the community center and dance club there.

The petition presented to the Patek Band at Taiton, read as follows: "To Mr. Joe Patek and his Orchestra members: The Taiton Community, the various clubs, organizations, and dance groups, wish to THANK YOU and your orchestra members for the many years of entertainment that you have provided for them down thru the years. Anyone who could not dance to your music just could not dance. We all wish you and the members of the orchestra a MOST HAPPY RETIREMENT. We will all miss you and your music."

Accepting the petition, MR. JOE expressed his regrets to the large audience concerning retirement and disbanding; he also stated that he felt that the end must come some time, and it was appropriate that the end came among so many wonderful people. Tears flowed down Mr. Patek's cheeks as he spoke.

CESAT thus promotes Czech language instructions and helps to establish the Czech language classes anywhere in Texas to perpetuate our Czech heritage. To achieve this goal, CESAT helps the university students of our background with low interest loans to accomplish their education, providing these students are enrolled (or plan to do so) in Czech language courses and are actively participating in Czech ethnic matters. CESAT seeks and welcomes financial contributions or gifts from any citizens or organizations to support its ethnic activities. This association sets from time to time grants for worthy Czech ethnic causes and the scholastic contests in Czech with monetary awards for the high school level students dedicated to our heritage.

Head of the Youth Department STATEWIDE YOUTH LEADERS' RETREAT Another recommendation was that we hold this year's Statewide Youth Leaders' Retreat at Camp Val Verde May 14th and 15th for all DYCs, assistant DYCs, youth leaders and assistants, including spouses. The training would begin Saturday morning and last through Sunday noon. It is expected that some of those desiring to attend will want to arrive sometime Friday evening or Friday night in order to be ready for the training Saturday morning. This recommendation was approved by the Supreme Lodge.

The Supreme Lodge will pay for the leasing of Camp Val Verde for that period, all meals, and mileage for one

8/VRSTNfK — Wednesday, March 16, 1983 car from each lodge. This will probably require some arrangements on car pooling so that we do not have to pay mileage to every individual coming by automobile. As in the case of Longhorn, we are asking that you come prepared to stay for the duration of the training from Saturday morning through Sunday noon. No remuneration for mileage will be paid for those who do not stay for the entire training period. I think the reason for this is obvious. If you do have to go back home Saturday night, we ask that you return again Sunday morning with mileage reimbursement for only one round trip.

We hope you will be making plans to attend this Youth Leaders' Retreat because there is much valuable information to be gained pertaining to all facets of our youth program. If you plan to attend, please send us your name, lodge number, the total number of persons coming with you, and a statement to the effect that you will be present for the entire training session. For purposes of finalizing lodging and meal arrangements, we are asking that you notify us no later than Monday, May 9th.

DISTRICT II EXPECTS HUGE TURNOUT AT LODGE 29, TAYLOR Our next District II activity will be the District II spring meeting held March 27th at Lodge 29, Taylor beginning at 2 p.m. Please read Judy Prinz's letter in the February 23rd issue for details. The program will consist of any talent that any person, persons or groups (also youth clubs) who wish to perform regardless of age and also a craft or hobby'exhibit and you will have the privilege to tell your friends about it. Let us keep this in mind and we certainly hope we will have at least one or more talents from each lodge.

ENNIS YC NEWS The youth club held a short meeting January 20th in which we discussed some ways to earn some money. We decided to have a "sale" to be held the Sunday of Polka Festival. We also decided to go see "Savannah Smiles" which was a very enjoyable movie.

Our next meeting was held February 15th, 1983 at 7 p.m. We had a very warm and generous response concerning our prizes.

Raymond Lewis of COLORTYME in Ennis presented a portable stereo with a 4" T.V. to the youth club as

the main prize. Ennis merchants have been very genevous in donating to our "Sale": prizes to, be given away in May are: 1. COLORTYME -- portable stereo with a 4" TV 2. Raymond Zapletal —bunk beds 3. These merchants have showed how much they care for the youth of Ennis and the youth club hopes everyone shows their appreciation to them. The tickets will be sold at 50 cents each and they will be available from every youth club member. We are hoping that we will have a good response to these chances.

The next activity the youth club is planning is a trip to Dallas to Chuckie Cheese which will be March 13th. All club members are to meet at the SPJST parking lot at the time discussed. Any member may bring a guest, but that guest will have to pay his own way which will be $4 each. If anyone has any questions, they can contact me at 875-9245 after 6 p.m.

Some of the other activities to be held will be a ice skating trip to Dallas, swimming party during the summer months, bowling, and miniature golf. The money from the raffle will be for one big thing, but what has not yet been decided.

We have two new members in our youth club, Michelle Zapletal and Andrew Zapletal, daughter and son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Zapletal.

We would like to welcome them into our youth club and we hope they will enjoy what'we have planned.

It was a story about a little girl who felt as if her parents did not care for her so she ran away and lived with two complete strangers who showed her a lot of love even though they had just broken out of jail. It was sad but very good. Everyone in the movie theater was crying.

The lodge had a clean-up and only a few youth club members helped.

Those were Lisa Rejcek, Kathleen Rejcek, and Sharon Rejcek. Michelle Zapletal and Andrew Zapletal helped also. We had a lot of fun helping the adults and at times had to laugh at what everyone was doing. After we cleaned up the hall, we enjoyed chicken, potato salad, beans, homemade bread, and strudel.

We hope that we will be able to have a few new members in our lodge soon. We have a new Youth Leader, Adell Rejcek.

Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club sold sandwiches at a Battle Dance February 20, at the Taiton Community Center.

Our youth club made $66.00 on this project. We would like to thank everyone who donated towards this project and I would also like to thank Mrs. J. W. Krutilek and Miss Mary Mrnustik who are always willing to help us in the kitchen.

The next youth club meeting will be April 10 at 2:30 p.m. in the Community Center. For the contest everyone is asked to make an Easter Bunny and the theme on the program will be on Easter.

CAROLE CUMMINGS GAVE EXCELLENT DEMONSTRATION AT SPJST YC Carole L. Cummings, owner of the newly-established business of Carole & Co., Inc. gave a very informative and interesting talk to the youth of SPJST here in Ennis.

Mrs. Cummings first began on the basics of good skin care. She informed the youth of the importance of proper skin care. Mrs. Cummings gave some tips on makeup, clothes, and hair styles. She pointed out to each youth the best color that person could wear and they thoroughly enjoyed her help.

She informed the teenagers and the younger children how important it is to take care of your body at a young age, and that many of the suggestions her mother gave her when she was a teenager are, in fact, very true.

The Youth Club presented Mrs. Cummings with a small gift of appreciation and they truly enjoyed her. If you have not heard Mrs. Cummings and how to improve your wardrobe and yourself, you have missed a very interesting and informative experience.

The Youth Club would like to say "thank you" to Mrs. Cummings for coming to their meeting.

We had a guest at this meeting, Michelle Zapletal. We discussed old business of the movie, and decided to go to Dallas for pizza in March.

The Pledge was led by Linda Treumer and the prayer was said by Amy Kresta.

Roll call, minutes and treasurer's report were read.

Old business and new business were then discussed.

The youth club made a donation of $25.00 towards a coffee pot for the Community Center. We also made a donation towards the Heart Association.

The meeting was then adjourned and we played games and had refreshments.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 88, Houston, on behalf of the entire membership, wish to express our sympathy to the bereaved family of

EDWARD JOHN KADLECEK, SR. 82, who died February 15, 1983, in a Houston hospital. He was a member of Lodge No. 88, the Lodge Choral Club and the Hlahol Dramatic Club.

Brother Kadlecek was born September 24, 1900, in Waller County, Texas, where he grew up.

He came to Houston and was employed by Mobil Oil Company, where he worked for 32 years. In 1929 he married Louise Jakubec in Dallas. In 1979 they celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary.

For many years, Brother Kadlecek was a very active member of Lodge 88 serving as first and second vice president and also serving on various committees. In 1969 he was elected president and then he served on the Board of Trustees until his health began to fail. In 1971, he and his wife received a plaque for their dedicated service to our lodge. In 1980 Brother Kadlecek was made an honorary member of the Board of Trustees and of the Social Night Committee; on both of these he had worked faith-

fully for years. He will be remembered for his kindness, his loyalty, and his witticism.

His survivors are: his wife, Louise Kadlecek; daughter and son-in-law, Mary Louise and Fletcher Jamar, all of Houston; son and daughter-in-law, Edward John, Jr. and Marilyn Kadlecek; grandchildren, Edward John III, Karen and Nancy Kadlecek, all of New Braunfels, Texas; sister, Marie Rezek and brothers, John and F. F. (Amos) Kadlecek of Houston, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Thursday, February 17, 1983, at 9 a.m. at the Heights Funeral Chapel with Father Joe Szymczak of All Saints Catholic Church and Tillie Helmcamp of Lodge No. 88 officiating there and at the graveside services at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery, Garden of Gethsemani.

Brother Snokhous was born August 19, 1893, near Aquilla Creek.

He lived all his life in the Aquilla Creek-West area, where he was a farmer and rancher and owned Snokhous Blacksmith Shop for 62 years.

He was a World War I veteran and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the American Legion, Knights of Columbus No. 2305 and SPJST Lodge No. 6.

Brother Snokhous was married to Sidonia Dvorsky in 1917.

Survivors include his wife, Sidonia Dvorsky Snokhous; two sons, James A. Snokhous of Guatemala and Raymond J. Snokhous of Houston; two daughters, Mrs. Charlie (Angeline) Sulak of Waco and Mrs. Ernest J. (Evelyn) Urbanovsky of West; two sisters, Mrs. August Pustejovsky and Mrs. Ann Mason, both of West; nine grandchildren; and 11 greatgrandchildren.

Memorials were designated for West Rest Haven Chapel.

Pallbearers were David Urbanovsky, Mark Snokhous, Ray Sulak, Billy Dvorsky, Charles Sulak and Jimmy Snokhous.

Honorary pallbearers were Lawrence Girard, Mike Daniels, Jodie Hannes and Dean Nunnley.

10/VESTNiK - Wednesday, March 16, 1983 Brother Pertl was born May 1, 1894, in Burleson County, the son of Vincent and Emilie Hejl Pertl.

He was a lifetime resident of Burleson County; a farmer and rancher in the Deanville Community.

He was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Caldwell and a member of the SPJST Lodge of Caldwell.

He was a veteran of World War I serving with the U.S. Army with the 143rd Inf., 36th Division, enlisting in 1917. He served overseas Champayne Front from July 17, 1918, to May, 1919. Brother Pertl was married to Annie Sebesta November 22, 1922 in the Sebesta home.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Annie Pert! of Caldwell; three sons, Clarence Pertl of Pasadena, Melvin Pertl of Houston, and Joe Pertl of Deanville; two daughters, Mrs. Naomi Rathjen of Lyons and Mrs. Joyce Thatcher of Bryan; 15 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Millie Zelenka of Caldwell.

Brother Pertl was preceded in death by one son, Stanley Dennis Pertl; his parents; two brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 2, with Rev. Bill Pulscher officiating and (St. James Lutheran Church) burial was in the Ganado City Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Raymond and Carl Zajicek, Glen Schoenfeld, Calvin Schomburg, Alvin Quebe and Willford Swank.

Honorary pallbearers were Ed Ottis, Anton Hlavaty, Ed Wiese and Mike Martin.

Brother Zajicek served as city councilman 7 years and 2 years as mayor. He was a retired mechanic having worked for the Mauritz Company for many years and opened his own business "Adolph's Magneto Service," which he operated until 1974.

Survivors include his wife, Elsie Schomburg Zajicek; twin daughters, Peggy Glaze of Ganado and Patsy Kubala of Edna; a son, Adolph Zajicek, Jr., of Ganado; a sister, Emily Krajcik of Victoria; three brothers, Robert, Willie and Johnny Zajicek of Ganado; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Brother Walters was born at Kinkier, Texas, 14 April 1909 to William and Frances (Pustejovsky) Walters. He received his primary education in Lavaca and Colorado County Schools and attended Draughan Business College in Houston, majoring in bookkeeping and accounting. He married Miss Vlasta Zaruba 17 June 1938 in Houston.

Brother Walters was an active, astute and friendly person. He maintained his own business as an insurance and real estate agent and income tax accountant. In public life he was an advisory director of First State Bank of Yoakum, member and past president of Yoakum School Board, member City Council, and at one time coach of Little League Baseball.

He was also a member of the SPJST, Lions Club, and Kiwanis Club of which he was a past president.

Brother Walters received his 50year SPJST membership pin in 1982.

He was introduced to hunting and fishing as a young boy in the woods and along the streams of Lavaca County. There he developed a knowledge and love of nature that he never forgot, and imparted to his children and grandchildren.

Brother Walters is survived by his wife, Vlasta (Zubie) Walters; a son, Robert Wayne (Buzzy) Walters, both of Yoakum; a daughter, Mrs. Jack (Robbie) Borchers of New Braunfels; a brother, William M. Walters; sisters, Mrs. Ed. (Lillie) Schindler, Mrs. Emil (Ella) Fojt, all of Hallettsville, Mrs. Raymond (Clara) Shafer of Victoria and seven grandchildren.

Burial services were conducted by Rev. Dol Bolton, pastor of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, at Buffington Funeral Home and at the graveside. Interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery in Yoakum.

Czechs In Texas Lose A Good Man The young gentleman who is the subject of this article is unknown to most of our membership. Those who have been in any way involved in the research and compilation of facts about Czechs in Texas will recognize the name of Phil Hewitt. I have been involved in many projects with Phil since I came to office in January 1969 and I know of no other individual who possesses the extensive knowledge that Phil does about the Czechs and all they stand for in Texas.

Phil Hewitt was one of the first five people hired by the Institute of Texas Cultures back when he started his work in June of 1967. He was first a Research Assistant, then Research Associate, then made Exhibits Director in 1978. His first assignment was researching the Jewish, Italian, and AngloAmericans of Texas. In 1969 after Hemisfair was created during the administration of former Governor John Connally, the Institute was made a part of the University of Texas, Phil was assigned research on the Czechs, Norwegians, and Swedes of Texas, at the same time continued working on the Italian and Jewish elements. He has, in effect, been researching the Czechs in Texas since 1969. Phil and I had collaborated closely on producing the booklet "The Czech Texans" and the film strip "Texane ceskeho puvodu", which is used extensively throughout the state. He has been in charge of the Czech Exhibit at Hemisfair for a number of years, and has worked closely with us in the loan and exhibit of SPJST artifacts as a part of that exhibit. A year or so ago Phil completed his doctoral dissertation (Ph.D.) on "The Czechs in Texas: A Study Of The Immigration And The Development Of Czech Ethnicity, 1850-1920". The research on his dissertation was so extensive that it involves over 100 pages for the bibliography. I was proud to proofread the Czech in Phil's dissertation for the correct spelling and placing of Czech diacritics. He is making available a copy of that dissertation for our library here and researchers are free to use it, provided they accord

the appropriate credit for the information used. Quotes can be taken from it but wholesale reproduction will not be permitted because it is copyrighted. One interesting feature of Phil's dissertation is that he deals with the littleknown role played by the Czechs in the Civil War. In a recent phone call, Phil recalled that when he got well into the researching of the Czechs, the part that intrigued him the most was how the Czech element in Texas was able to overcome the many adversities that faced them and were still able to maintain their ethnic identity down through these many years. "That is certainly commendable and to be respected", said Phil.

Phil also helped us arrange for microfilming the first editions of Svoboda, dating back to 1895, and the Hospodarsky Obzor, and Obzor, all three containing information about the SPJST at the time. That microfilm now is available in our library, along with a microfilm reader. He and his associates have also microfilmed issues of the Hospodar, Texasky Rolnik, and soon will commence microfilming the vast store of past issues of the newspaper previously printed in West, Cechoslovak.

February 15th was Phil's last day at the Institute. He will be taking a position as Executive Director of the Center For Transportation & Commerce in Galveston. The Center has a 7-million dollar museum pertaining to all forms of transportation and commerce. In his most recent letter to me, among other things, Phil states: The news paper project and the other projects that we have been working on together with you and your museum will be directed by someone else. As of now we certainly do want to retain the items we have on loan from the SPJST Museum and hope that we will be able to maintain excellent contact with you and the SPJST. Debby Large will be in touch with you soon concerning the pick up and return of the newspaper collection that we will be photographing at the Barker Texas History Center in Austin. I certainly hope that you will give her all the cooperation and help that you have been so generous with for me. It has been one of the high points of my job here at the Institute to work with you and Otto and the members of the SPJST over the last 15 years.

Although Phil was not of Czech ancestry and could not read nor write the Czech language, he has a keen and meticulous appreciation for the facts, which is a prime requisite for any researcher. He knew as much or more about the Czechs in Texas than some of us Czechs. He had traversed and visited virtually every Czech community in the State of Texas during the course of his research and compilation of data. He is an unusually talented young man and it was my pleasure and privilege to know and be associated with him in a number of projects. He has our best wishes in his new endeavor, and please, "Doctor", don't forget us Czechs, and whenever you ever compile a sequel and updated version of your dissertation, we

Thadious is a member of SPJST Lodge No. 103 in Flatonia and currently serves as president of that lodge. Several Czech organizations such as the SPJST and KJT have helped out the program.

One-third of the students in the school have. Czech surnames and at least one-half of them have a Czech ancestor.

"Czech is the third most spoken language in Texas," he explained.

The languages are English, Spanish and Czech.

Besides serving as the Czech teacher, Polasek also teaches senior English, is the school's librarian and the UYL literature sponsor. This is his sixth year to teach. And while other opportunities are available to him he said, "I'd like to stay in the classroom, I enjoy teaching, and this is a good community to work in.

There is good contact with the parents."

The classes, which are offered to the 7th and 8th grades and in high school, introduce basic Czech and include some history about Czechoslovakia and its people as well as the Czech settlements in Texas.

Thadious Polasek, a member of Ascension of Our Lord Mission in Moravia, is a person who is happy and enthusiastic. He is a person dedicated to helping young people to learn and to become all they can be.

He is the kind of person we like to hear about during Christmas season.

Seeks OK To Halt Service To 58 Texas Towns

Thadious Polasek Flatonia Thadious Polasek is a native of Moravia, Texas. He grew up speaking Czech and now he is doing something to make sure that future generations of young people will also be able to speak Czech.

Polasek is a teacher at the Flatonia High School where he teaches several classes in Czech. He says there are several schools in Texas teaching Czech.

A young man of great charm, Polasek graduated from Texas University in Austin with a degree in Czech and Russian and a minor in English. He is working on a masters degree in Library Science.

He also spent three summers in Prague, Czechoslovakia, studying the ValaSsk3-r dialect which is spoken in Northern Moravia. He said, "I had no problem communicating with the Czechs who speak standard Czech."

He encourages his students to learn and to use the dialect spoken by their families.

Finding a text book has been a problem for the school since there is no state adopted book. However, he did obtain a colorful and interesting book in Czechoslovakia which he bought and uses with the students.

The community reaction has been very favorable. "Now some families can communicate for the first time," he said. "We had one grandmother who always wanted to talk to her grandchildren. They took theikclass and were able to talk with her before she died."

The growl of the Greyhound could be gone soon from some Texas towns.

Officials of Greyhound Lines, Inc. are seeking state approval to cancel bus service to 58 Texas towns located along 10 of the company's routes, the Railroad Commission said Friday.

Included in the request for service cancellation are two Harris County towns, Sheldon and Crosby.

The Transportation Division of the commission heard the application from the firm Thursday and recessed the hearing. A spokesman said additional hearings will be held prior to state action.

Cities that would lose service under the proposal are Melissa, Anna, Van Alstyne, Howe, Glen Rio, Anthony, Canutillo, Kingsbury, Harwood, Belmont, Gonzales, Waelder, Flatonia, Engle, Weimar, Glidden, Alleyton, Eagle Lake and East Bernard.
