Insurance Seminar Held At Home Office

Twenty-eight SPJST sales representatives attended a two-day insurance seminar Saturday and Sunday, February 26th and 27th at the Home Office in Temple.

In addition to the entire Insurance Department being involved in this seminar, Dick Smith, a Fraternal Insurance Consultant with Kinder Brothers and Associates, lectured the group.

Very rarely do you get something for nothing and that is as true in the life insurance business as it is in every other business.

BEWARE of gimmickry and the "smooth talk-quick fix-and ours is better" pitch from someone trying to sell you a once-in-a-lifetime "deal". He's getting his bucks up front and you'll be the loser in the long term.

In summary, some of these new companies do not sell cash-value life insurance and most of their business involves the REPLACEMENT of existing cash-value life insurance policies. The approach is usually based upon the "buy term and invest the difference" approach. It is also known as pyramid-type massmerchandising of deposit-term life insurance. Thousands of part-time agents are involved. Over 6,000 applications for temporary licenses have flooded the licensing division;of the State Board of Insurance— more than have ever been received from one company. That ought to tell you something. The Better Business Bureaus around the country have been interested in such activities, as have the various State Boards of Insurance, and State Attorneys General. The sales organization is essentially a pyramid, with emphasis being on recruitment of new sales people whose commissions are shared by those who recruit them and by others in management right on up to the top.

Camp Fund Allocation. The advance camp fund allocation to each district is being computed and will soon be distributed to the District Youth Counselors by this office. This is the fund received by the District Youth Counselors, is controlled by them and disbursed by them. This year, as in years past, this fund is derived from the annual net percentage gain on the Society's investments, which amounted to 8.27 in 1982. This was computed on $450,000, per action of the last convention and will amount to $37,215 in 1983. This compares to $35,550 in 1982. A district audit committee is to audit this fund and report to the membership at least once a year. We will probably have the advance amount ready for the Youth Leaders' Retreat at Camp Val Verde on May 14th and 15th.

stood at 11,422 as of January 5, 1983.

This was roughly an increase of 200 Vestniks being sent over last year at this time. About $735 a week is being used in postage in mailing our house organ and publishing costs are at approximately $1,390 per week. It behooves all members to read the Vestnik carefully each week for important information relating to t he lodges, districts, and the Society in general.

The Executive Vice President of the National Fraternal Congress of America, our good friend Raymond Klee, is on our mailing list for the Vestnik and recently wrote me the following: "When I can, I do review your publication. One outstanding feature of the Vestnik is the amount of coverage it gives to lodge activities. I believe this is very important because the lodge is the backbone and grass roots of every Society. Without the lodge and the good works of its members, fraternal benefit Societies would not enjoy their privileged position in the insurance community."

Charitable Contributions/Projects/ Work. I am gratified to hear and read of what I am convinced is an increase in charitable contributions and donations to worthwhile community causes by our lodges throughout the Society. I notice that recently a lodge raised over $3,000 to benefit a needy family. Another lodge reported almost 2,000 hours of charity work and over 15,000 hours of work by members without compensation. This is very good and commendable. Other lodges have staged similar charitable efforts to help not only members, but deserving members of the

community. I ask only that we not sit back and rest on our laurels but that we continue such efforts. Only through such projects and expenditures can we justify our special status and that is by funding those projects or needs in the community that the city, municipality, county, state, and federal levels would have to otherwise fund. Please continue these good works.

District Family Days. You will be hearing more about the District Family Days in the weeks and months to come. Please cooperate with your district officers in staging this event by your active support and your PERSONAL PARTICIPATION. The district officers and, members are, for the most part, the architects and planners of this event. I am encouraged by the enthusiasm on the part of the district officers. One of the districts is going to incorporate the idea that those bringing objects for exhibit may also sell them, although the profit motive is not one of the objectives of this event. I see no harm in it, however.

The Shiner Gazette recently carried a large article and picture of what they are terming their "Art And Hobby Show". Their publicity states: "There will be something of interest for folks of all ages at the American Legion Hall this Sunday (it was held Feb. 27th), when exhibitors from all over the state (in our case the districts) haul in their crafts to take part in the 8th Annual Art And Hobby Show sponsored by the Shiner Rotary Club. The exhibit is open to the public. The show seems to get a little bigger and better every year. Exhibitors are allowed to sell their wares."

The executive vice president of the National Fraternal Congress, in a recent letter to me, states: "I read about your fine Family Day program. I look forward to reading future issues and following the progress of this program.- So, officials of the National Fraternal Congress are watching us to see how this particular event will be handled and how successful it will be.

Although the American Family looks different than in the past, some researchers state that it still thrives and will survive. With some attention to that noble institution on the part of all of us, it will survive.

There are changes, however, that do not bode so well toward that end.

Still, modern man cannot survive without that "human-bonding" unit we call the Family. The real secret is not structure but the quality of the relationships of the people who live together. No question about iteconomic strife and the stress of the economic crunch is a prime problem within families of whatever structure they may be. Structural change comes from many factors-the change of moral attitudes, the changing role of women, and the whole upheaval within the value structure that we see in society, but what seems to be at the root of the problem is a sense of frustration of this decade from the economic crunch.

Our Family Day activities are not going to solve all of our inner-family problems, and no claim to that effect is being made. It is difficult to buck what appears to be a national trend, but by golly, we can give it our best shot and try. Then and only then can we say, "We gave it our best."

Originality And Independence Of Thought. We are a nation of

originals. Driven by the belief in ourselves and our ideals, fueled by our independence of thought and worth of the individual, our possibilities are limited only by our dreams. We are Americans . . We must learn from the past and strengthen our ties to it in order to bring about the best in our future.

On Being Youthful. When he was 75 years old in 1969, General Douglas MacArthur made a speech which contains much wisdom. I ran across it in a recent publication. I'm not sure of its name.

YOUTH Youth is not entirely a time of life it is a state of mind. It is not wholly a matter of ripe cheeks, red lips or supple knees. It is a temper of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions, a freshness of the deep springs of life. It means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity, of an appetite for adventure over love of ease.

Nobody grows old by merely living a number of years. People grow old only by deserting their ideals. Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up interest wrinkles the soul. Worry, doubt, self-distrust, fear and despair-these are the long, long years that bow the head and turn the growing spirit back to dust. Whatever your years there is in every being's heart the love of wonder, the undaunted challenge of events, the unfailing child-like appetite for what next, and the joy and the game of life.

You are as young as your faith, as old as your doubt; as young as your self-confidence, as old as your fear; as young as your hope, as old as your despair. In the central place of every heart there is a recording chamber; so long as it receives messages of

Convention 1984. Our XXIVth Convention will convene in Corpus Christi on Monday, 18 June, and go to Thursday, 21 June. Wouldn't it be something if we concluded the convention by mid-day or at the end of Wednesday, the 20th?!!

If the Texas flag is displayed against• a wall, the blue field should be at the flag's own right (observer's left). The Texas flag should be displayed on all state memorial days; it should fly at every school on every regular school day.

The Texas flag should be on the marching left in a procession in which the flag of the United States is carried; its staff should be behind the staff of the flag of the United States when the two are displayed with crossed staffs. The Texas flag should be underneath the national flag when the two are flown from the same halyard. When flown from separate, adjacent flagpoles, the United States flag and the Texas flag should be of approximately the same size and on flagpoles of equal length, and the United States flag should be on "the flag's own right," i.e., to the observer's left. The Texas flag should never be used for any utilitarian or strictly decorative purpose. No advertising should be placed upon the flag or flagstaff, and no picture of the flag be used in an advertisement. When the Texas flag is in such condition that it is no longer a suitable emblem for display, it should be destroyed, preferably by burning, "with the spirit of respect and reverence which all Texans owe the emblem."

Acts of the Legislature of 1917 provide a penalty for disfiguring the Texas flag in any way, using it for advertising or commercial purposes by printing on it, or the flagpole, or otherwise.

Texas Flag Pledge A pledge to the Texas flag also was adopted by the Forty-third Legislature and from 1933 until 1965 that pledge was used. It contained a phrase, "Flag of 1836," which was historically incorrect, as Texas did not have a flag in 1836. On April 3, 1965, Gov. John Connally signed an act of the Fifty-ninth Legislature officially designating the pledge to the Texas flag as follows: "Honor the Texas Flag.

I pledge allegiance to thee, Texas, one and indivisible."

Other Symbols State Seal. —The seal of the State

of Texas consists of "a star of five points, encircled by olive and live oak branches, and the words, 'The State of Texas'."

(State Constitution, Art. IV, Sec. 19.) The state seal is a slight modification of the Gieat Seal of the Republic of Texas, adopted by the Congress of the Republic, Dec. 10, 1836, and readopted with modifications in 1839.

State Citizenship Designation. — The people of Texas usually call themselves Texans. However, Texian was generally used in the early period of history.

State Motto. —The state motto of Texas is "Friendship." The word, Texas, or Tejas, was the Spanish pronunciation of a Caddo Indian word meanin g "friends" or "allies."

State Tree. —The pecan is the state tree of Texas. The sentiment that led to its official adoption probably grew out of the request of Gov. James Stephen Hogg that a pecan tree be planted at his grave.

State Stone. —Palmwood.

State Flower. —The state flower of Texas is the bluebonnet, also called buffalo clover, wolf flower, "el conejo" (the rabbit). The bluebonnet was adopted as the State Flower, on request of the Society of Colonial Dames in Texas, by the Twentyseventh Legislature, 1901. The original resolution designated Lupinus subcarnosus as the state flower, but a resolution (HCR 44) signed March 8, 1971, by Gov. Preston Smith provided legal status as the state flower of Texas for "Lupinus Texensis and any other variety of bluebonnet."

State Bird. —The Mockingbird (Mimus Polyglottos) is the state bird of Texas, adopted by the Legislature at the request of the Texas Federation of Women's Clubs.

There has been no official adoption by the state of any animal other than the mockingbird.

However, the Longhorn, adopted by University of Texas; the Mustang, adopted by Southern Methodist University; the Horned Frog, adopted by Texas Christian University, are rather widely recognized as specifically "Texan," and as being common property of all Texans. The chaparral bird, also known as the roadrunner and Paisano (Spanish for "countryman") is a favorite and was the adopted bird of the Centennial Exposition of 1936.

State Dish. —Chili proclaimed Texas state dish by Texas Legislature in 1977.

State Gem. —Topaz is the official Texas gem, found in Llano uplift area, especially west to northwest of Mason.

State Grass. —Sideoats grama, a native grass found on many different soils, was designated by the Legislature as the state grass of Texas.

State Holidays. —Texas has two state holidays and several special observance days. The two holidays are Texas Independence Day, March 2, and San Jacinto Day. April 21.

State Song. —The state song of Texas is "Texas, Our Texas." The music was written by the late William J. Marsh (who died Feb. 1, 1971, in Fort Worth at age 90), and the words by Marsh and Gladys Yoakum Wright, both of Fort Worth. It was adopted as the result of an award offered by the Legislature. Its text follows:

The adopted song of the University of Texas, "The Eyes of Texas," is also frequently sung at public gatherings. It is usually sung by a standing audience and has a measure of recognition as a state song. Origin of this song is as follows: William Lamdin Prather, president of the University of Texas, 1899-1906, frequently said to the students, "The eyes of Texas are upon you." A university minstrel, as a prank when President Prather was present, sang a song, using this phrase, which had been written by a student, John Lang Sinclair, to the tune of "I've Been Working on the Railroad (Levee)." Gradually it became the adopted song of the University and is popular throughout Texas.

U.S. Flag The colors in the flags of both the United States and Texas mean the following: Courage (red), purity and liberty (white) and loyalty (blue).

The committee, headed by Oliver Jones, which in 1839 wrote the recommendations for the present Lone Star Flag of Texas, specified that the meanings should be peace (white), war (red) and friendship (blue). However, this part of the recommendation was not adopted by the Texas Congress, and the meanings of the colors in the national and state flags are commonly accepted as being identical.

Salute to U.S. Flag The flag should be saluted when passing in parade by the civilian removing hat and placing at left shoulder while standing at attention. Women salute by standing at attention and placing right hand over heart.

Pledge to Flag of United States With right hand over heart: "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the

United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands. One Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

(From the Texas Almanac—Ed.) *** Rumors about jobs in other parts of the country — often the sun belt — have sent many unemployed workers off in their cars without much planning. This frequently leads to problems as bad as unemployment.

When reports of available jobs prove to be untrue, job seekers and their families may find themselves stranded in unfamiliar places, with little money and few friends or contacts. To avoid this, the Travelers Aid Association of America suggests a few precautions: One day's drive. If you can't find work where you live, look within one day's drive from home. That way, you can investigate a large area without giving up the benefits of home. If you find work in that area, you may not have to move at all — or at least not as far.

Long distance. If you look outside your region, conduct a long-range search before you travel. Check advertisements in out-of-town newspapers at a public library, and write or call potential employers. It's cheaper to call long distance than to travel to a distant city.

Employment services. Investigate the out-of-town listings at your nearest state-employment-service office or contact the employment service in the cities where you want to relocate. Your local library may also have out-of-town telephone directories to help you find correct phone numbers and addresses.

Verify job offers. If you're offered a job, make sure it's valid before moving. Ask for a letter assuring your employment and giving the starting date, salary and pay period.

Seek references about the employer from the local Chamber of Commerce, Better Business Bureau or local trade union.

Advance planning. Determine beforehand all costs of the trip, including motel rooms en route and at your destination, as well as food and fuel to last until your first paycheck. Remember that many nonreimbursed moving costs will be tax-deductible. Take money for emergencies — or to return home if things don't work out. Use traveler's checks, since carrying a lot of cash can be risky, and it may be difficult to cash a personal check in a strange city. *** Travelers carrying prescription drugs when they return from abroad can run into trouble with U.S. Customs if they don't take some precautions. For example: Take along only as much medicine as you need for the length of the trip. Keep the medicine in its original containers. Make sure each bottle is properly labeled to show its U.S. origin, and carry a copy of your doctor's prescription along with you. *** One way to cut auto-insurance costs is to increase your deductible.

Deductibles—the amount you agree to pay if you have a loss—range from $50 to $500. Insurance firms can charge less when the deductible is higher. They don't have to handle as many small claims, which can cost as much to investigate as large ones. *** Don't leave alcoholic beverages

Something quite new has been added for your enjoyment. A talent show and craft exhibit will be a part of the day's activities. Any member may participate. Several "acts" have been lined up already. We are calling this Family Day Talent and Exhibits. Please encourage all of your lodge members who would like to share their special talent with us to do so. Any kind of craft (painting, handwork, etc.), hobby, or gift (singing, instrumentals, etc.) are excellent examples of what we would like to have you share with us.

V Spring Meeting

Dear Members, Our spring district meeting will

be Sunday, March 20, 1983, with Pasadena Lodge No 172 hosting it in their beautiful new lodge home.

A barbecued beef dinner will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Lodge 88 Czech Concert Orchestra and Choral Club will entertain us during this time. Their performance is always a treat you do not want to miss.

After the meeting, which convenes promptly at 1:30 p.m., there will be a free dance from 4 to 8 p.m. for those who bought dinner tickets. The Henry Repka Orchestra will furnish music for your dancing pleasure.

Please mark your calendar for March 20th and come to your District V meeting. Not only will you enjoy the good food and the good entertainment, but you will also have several chances to win nice door prizes if you register by 2 p.m.

4 Sets March 13th Monthly Meeting Lodge

Dear Members: Our lodge met Sunday, February 13, 1983 in the Grant Building at Hallettsville, with President Frank Zabransky presiding.

The Preamble of SPJST was read followed by Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy reading the minutes of our last meeting.

Correspondence was read by President Zabransky.

Co-Youth Leader Gaynelle Chudej reported on the Youth Club, activities.

Treasurer Helen Zabransky read her report. She also read the audit report that was compiled by Elizabeth Janak. It was well-done and the lodge thanks Mrs. Janak for the wonderful job done.

Several of our members are in the hospital; those named were Charles Holy, August Holub, Julius Holy, Emmanuel Vasek and Steve Konarik.

It was announced that the District VI spring meeting will be held Sunday, April 24th.

Financial-Secretary Hilmer Galetka gave a report.

Following other business the meeting adjourned. Refund checks were given out, games were played, and refreshments and lunch were also served.

Birthdays of members in January, February and March were honored: namely, Gaynelle Chudej, Ida Neubauer, Melissa Holy, Alex Galetka, Philip Vahalik, Alfons Holy and Thomas Holy. Winner of the birthday cake was Thomas Holy.

Other winners of the day were: Adult Door Prize-Gaye Anne Galetka, Youth Door Prize-Chris Chudej, Box Valentine Candy-Mrs. Anton Bollom.

The next meeting will be Sunday, March 13th in the Grant Building, beginning at 2 p.m. Refreshments and lunch will be served as usual. I hope to see you there!

Lodge No. 15, Buckholts Makes Donations President Ann Balusek called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. after everyone present enjoyed a supper of sausage, kraut and sweets.

The flags were presented by Dean and John Hillman and the members recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

In roll call of officers, all were present, except the reporter.

The minutes, financial reports and all committee reports were approved with a minor correction of the minutes.

Our visitor was faithful Dan Balusek; we feel like he is one of us; we always welcome you, Dan, keep coming.

Robin Turner took out additional insurance.

Our donations this month were to the American Heart Association and our Scholarship Fund.

Alma Seibert and Bennie Janes were on the sick list; wishing you a speedy recovery.

Our new business was to panel and repair our hall.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to February celebrants, Milton S hiller and Charlsie Svetlik.

Our next meeting will be March 9th at 7 p.m. A social will be held before the meeting. Members bring a covered dish and a sweet. Come join us, we work and also have a lot of fun together. Try us!

Lodge To Honor 50-Year Recipients

Lodge 29 met for their regular monthly meeting Sunday, February 13 at 4 p.m., with President Edwin Adamek presiding.

Members stood and recited the Pledge of Allegiance which .was led

by Andrew Wuensche and all of us remained standing for a few moments of silence in memory of our deceased Sister Teresa Holly.

Roll call of officers showed all present, except Youth Leader Melvin Steger.

Minutes of the previous meeting were read by Secretary Mike Kaiser

and a correction was made in the minutes that Mariane Paulsen is a princess in the May Fete.

Property Committee and treasurer's reports were also given.

We have three new members who joined our lodge: namely, Bill Moore, Wendy Vrana and Julie Schmidt.

We have a new sales representative and she is Diane Naivar. A motion was made and seconded that we accept her as a sales representative and we wish her the best of luck in the future.

Six of our members will receive 50-year membership pins and plaques, also we will try to have them present -at our April meeting to present theSe 'plaques to them: namely, Mary Boudny, Libby E. Kutter, Ed Strmiska, Angeline Zrubek, Frances Reveile and John Pokorny.

A discussion was brought up about what to serve for the May Fete. A motion was made to serve the same as last year: barbecue, barbecue sandwiches and kolache.

Our May Fete will be held on the first Sunday, May 8th. It was also brought up whether we are going to have a dance at our Christmas Party. A motion was made to rather have a free dance at our May Fete instead of at our Christmas Party.

Youth Report: There were 29 members present and that Kim Caesar and Clint Krhovjak will represent the Youth Club at our May Fete.

Door prizes were won by Andy Wuensche, Paula Wuensche and Raymond Naivar.

Our next meeting will be held Sunday, April 10 at 4 p.m.; we are hoping to see you all there.

84, Dallas Holds Initiation

Dear Members: Despite the bad weather Lodge 84 had a good crowd for its monthly meeting last Sunday.

District III Director Sid Pokladnik initiated, into our lodge, all who joined the Society during 1982; our congratulations to them and our appreciation to Brother Sid is expressed, the dinner served afterwards was superb and thanks to all the pastry makers; also those who helped prepare the dinner.

A moment of silence was observed for two of our members, Brother Jerry Slovacek and Sister Angeline Slovak; to the families, we express our sincere sympathy. May our departed members have eternal rest.

The various committees gave their report, which were cut short due to the initiation and dinner, however, Youth Leader Bessie Petr did make a special report on the progress the youth was making in the program to be presented on our 73rd Anniversary for Sunday, March 20th. Our doors will open at 1 p.m. and from 11 a.m. until 12 o'clock enjoy a happy hour with your friends; free beer by the cup, soft drinks or coffee can be enjoyed as you socialize; stay to enjoy the dinner, program and guest speaker, also our 50-year members will receive their pins and meeting the "Brother and Sister" of our lodge.

The Country Boys of Ennis are playing here March 19th from 8:30 p.m. until 12:30 a.m., and our lodge monthly meeting will be March 21st.

Antonio Lodge No. 133 Holds Regular Meeting

Lodge No. 133 held their regular meeting at 1505 S. Gevers St. February 20, 1983 President Matula opened the meeting at 2 p.m. Secretary Mark Netek reported that all officers were present. The minutes of the last meeting were read, and were accepted without any corrections, also the treasurer's report which was given by Sister Viola Mazac was accepted as read.

Reports from Entertainment Chairman Bro. Anthony Trilicek was given; also the chairman of the Auditing Committee Bro. Jaroslav Kleprlik reported. Both reports were very well reported. The Auditing Committee complimented Sister Viola Mazac for the fine and excellent condition that she keeps her records. We do have some members on the sick list, Sister Stella Mares and Bro. Hugo Wollert who is in the hospital. Bro. Frank Mazac who was also just recently released from the hospital, but is doing fine. Bro. Wollert has been in the hospital for some time; we ask the members to visit him at the Southeast Baptist Hospital. We wish all a speedy recovery.

Discussion was held on the forthcoming organizational day which will be March 20th. It was recommended that we have a catered dinner. After some discussion, the members elected to have a catered barbeque dinner with all the trimmings, and also the pastry. We want to give the ladies a break, so no one has to be confronted with what to bring or do. All we want the members to do is to bring themselves, so, remember, dinner will be served at 12:30 p.m. followed by our regular meeting; also we will have other entertainment. I have mentioned before that our attendance has increased the past year, and we are looking forward to do better this year. The last meeting there were 38 members present. It's wonderful to see our sisters and brothers attending our meetings; it makes the work of any officer of the lodge more pleasant. It is somewhat the same as when an orchestra is playing at a dance. If the people on the floor see that the members of

We want to remind the members of the District Spring Meeting. Keep your ear tuned to the Vestnik; further information will be available.

In reading the Vestnik, 1 noticed that many of the schools throughout the state of Texas are teaching the Czech language, or, in some cases, the language is being taught on a private basis. We, here in San Antonio, would welcome such a treat. There wouldn't be any problem to secure people to attend such a school just to learn or for many just to brush up on the finer teachings of the Czech language. We will cooperate with anyone who is interested in setting up some of the Czech courses.

The San Antonio Czech Choral Club will entertain the residents at the Shady Oak Nursing Home and also the Oak Manor Nursing Home in Flatonia, Tex. The program in Moulton begins at 2 p.m. and in Flatonia at 4 p.m. The group has been organized for the past thirteen years and has performed in many areas in Texas. They only sing in the Czech language and are most familiar with songs that were popular with our parents and grandparents, but are also up-to-date with many of the current popular Czech songs that are now being sung in Czechoslovakia. They are very proud that they were the first group to introduce the song CERNY CIKAN UZ KAMARADI which is being played by the many Texas bands.

Important Information For Lodge 172, Pasadena Members Very

Dear Members: This is to let all of you know that work is going on at the hall all the time. Things are really shaping up.

Right now, we could use a few more workers during the week; come by the hall or call to find out what needs to be done, all help is appreciated.

The weather is better for outdoor work. If any of you have shrubs, trees or other plants to donate, please make a list of what you have so that an overall plan for landscaping the grounds can be worked out. The day for bringing the plants and planting them will be announced. Let us know first if and what you have to donate.

We are in the process of collecting your 1982 list of Fraternal Service Activities, which is very important to the SPJST Society and the National Fraternal Congress. They will use this information for the benefit of our SPJST. If you misplaced the form please ask for another one and do the best you can with it or you may make your list (without a form) and list such things as visiting the sick, care of elderly and needy. Put down your number of hours and dollars spent in these activities. Think of community service: Red Cross, March of Dimes, Blood Donor and Youth Activities, attending classes in Safety, First Aid or teaching a class; don't forget meetings, seminars and socials such as dances and dinners at your lodge, hours it took for planning and also the work that you do through your church: educational and religious activities such as lectures and special services are to be counted.

I promise to write more about our lodge meetings soon. Everything is doing just fine. I wish to thank everyone for supporting our lodge.

We try our best to keep making improvements to make everyone as comfortable as possible when they come to our lodge. I hope all of you are well and hope to see you around soon.

Congratulations are in order for one of our Sales Representatives, "Mydell Grochoske", who won a trip to Mayan Dude Ranch at Bandera, Texas. She was one of the thirty representatives who sold the most insurance last year. Mydell, we are very proud of you so keep up the good work. Hope you enjoy all of the rest you will be getting while you are gone. You have earned a vacation, you too, Louis.

Congratulations to Joe and Estelle Hurtik on the arrival of a new grandson. He put in his appearance about five weeks ago, and weighed 7 pounds and 4 ounces, was 21 1/2 inches long, and was named Forest Paul. We don't want to forget the proud parents, Robby and Claudette Cooper, as this is their first bundle of joy.

We want to welcome one member to Lodge 180, Duane Rosenauer.

Hope to see him at our meetings.

On the sick list this month (February) were a lot of people I am sure I don't know about. The ones that I know were Jan Cox and Estell Hurtik. That old flu sure can get you down.

Here and There Around Lodge 183, Arlington Dear Members: Just to remind all the members and friends of the Saturday night dance for March 12th; the Shamrocks will be playing for us again so all of you, who were there last time, bring all your friends and let's have a ball! Letter to the Editor Editor R. J. Sefcik P.O. Box 85 West, TX 76691 Dear Brother Sefcik: I am enclosing letters and photocopies sent to me by our good friend and SPJST member Henry Peck with reference to a celebrated musician, Jerry Mazanec, King of the Czech Polkas.

Henry Peck received his degree from the University of Texas where he studied all Czech courses under Dr. Micek and was an active member of the Czech Club. He had a small group of musicians organized to play for local Clubs emphasizing Czech music and began the collection of Czech recorded music. Henry speaks Czech fluently, better than some of us who were born with it. I was informed by his brother's wife of Dr. Charles Peck, a prominent dentist here, that he learned a lot from mingling with Czech people but that he also took additional courses at an Eastern College.

Last year, hearing about our annual Czech Ex-Students meeting in Taylor sponsored by the U.T. Czech Club, he drove non-stop to join in the celebration by sitting with Patek's Bank to play his trombone just like he later did with Jerry Mazanec. He carries his trombone everywhere.

Brother Sefcik, I don't know how acceptable the articles will be to the readership of the Vestnik but it will be interesting to music-lovers like yourself who I know thrive on polkas. May I just leave it all to your own judgement, omit some, revise some, etc.

Head of the Youth Department STATEWIDE YOUTH LEADERS' RETREAT Another recommendation was that we hold this year's Statewide Youth Leaders' Retreat at Camp Val Verde May 14th and 15th for all DYCs, assistant DYCs, youth leaders and assistants, including spouses. The training would begin Saturday morning and last through Sunday noon. It is expected that some of those desiring to attend will want to arrive sometime Friday evening or Friday night in order to be ready for the training Saturday morning: This recommendation was approved by the Supreme Lodge.

The Supreme Lodge will pay'fot the leasing of Camp Val Verde for that period, all meals, and mileage for one

car from each lodge. This will probably require some arrangements on car pooling so that we do not have to pay mileage to every individual coming by automobile. As in the case of Longhorn, we are asking that you come prepared to stay for the duration of the training from Saturday morning through Sunday noon. remuneration for mileage will be paid _for those who do not stay for the entire training period. I think t he reason for this is obvious. If you do have to go back home Saturday night, we ask that you return again Sunday morning with mileage reimbursement for only one round trip.

We hope you will be, making plans to attend this Youth Leaders' Retreat because there is much valuable information to be gained pertaining to all facets of our youth program. If you plan to attend, please send us your name, lodge number, the total number of persons coming with you, and a statement to the effect that you will be present for the entire training session. For purposes of finalizing lodging and meal arrangements, we are asking that you notify us no later than Monday, May 9th.

iies■mmann■i DISTRICT II EXPECTS HUGE TURNOUT AT LODGE 29, TAYLOR The rainy day Skating Party for District II was well-attended. We had 145 members on the skating floor and about 30 more parents/ leaders so we were all happy at the turnout.

From the Youth Leaders ROBSTOWN LODGE 117 APPOINTS ASSISTANT YL Dear Readers, I would like to take this opportunity to say that I have been selected as the assistant youth leader of Robstown Lodge No. 117 Youth Club. I am looking forward to the many new and exciting events that have been planned for the remainder of this year.

For the first. time I will be attending the District Training Class which is to be held in Flatonia and the Statewide Youth Leaders' Retreat to he held in Val Verde.

I would like to encourage all Youth Club members to attend the meetings and events which were planned by the Youth Leader, Assistant Youth Leader and Club President Todd Ellzey. We have several exciting things planned and if you don't attend the meetings you will miss all the fun: also, since there have been some changes in the new Youth Rule Book concerning the "SPJST Youth Club By-laws, craft and talent YAD rules", all members need to at tend the monthly meetings in order to be better informed as to what is expected of them and required in order to part icipate in YAD and attend camp.

I would also like to encourage all members to attend t he DiStrict VII meet ing which will he held in Floresv We April 10, 1983. There will be a lot of new and interesting ideas discussed at this meeting which concern all members of District VII. In order for our Society to grow and flourish, we need the younger members to become more involved in SPJST Activities, so let's all come out tot he district meetings and local lodge meetings and find out what is happening and become a part of t he planning and decision making.

Those planning on participating from our club are Lee Ann Pope, Melissa David and Mandy Richter.

With no further business to discuss, we adjourned and went to Temple for the District II Skating Party. After skating we ate at McDonald's with our friends from Elgin The fall and spring parties are planned by Frank Klinkovsky, and are a youth activity we all look forward to. The SPJST El Campo-Hilije Lodge 40 Youth Club held their meeting at the Hillje SPJST Hall, 14 February 1983.

We sang "Happy Birthday" to Martha Lynn Bartos and Teresa Kulcak.

Door prize was won by Michel Marek in the teen group.

We each made a Valentine and brought it, to the meeting to be judged. Those who made one and did not win, received 50 cents.

We also played games and then refreshments were served by the mot-hers and the club paid for the refreshments.

Joe M. Machu Brother Joe M. Machu, 93, of Granger, died Friday, January 21, 1983 in Johns Community Hospital in Taylor.

Family watch was held Saturday night, January 22 in Condra Funeral Home in Taylor and Sunday, January 23. in Granger Condra Funeral Home.

Services were held Monday, January 24 at 2 p.m. in the Granger Brethren Church with Rev. Henry Beseda, Rev. Gordon Hejl and Rev. Gary Lester officiating. Burial was in the Machu Cemetery.

Brother Machu was a member of SPJST Lodge 20, and Mutual Aid Society of the Unity of the Brethren Local No. I. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Frank (Hattie) Kollaja of Granger, Mrs. Willie (Syble) Stojanik of Austin, Mrs. Edward (Mildred) Townsend of Round Rock, Mrs. Edwin (Alice) Stojanik of Thrall; a son, Albin E. Machu of Granger; a sister, Mrs. Bertha Kopecky of Bay City; two brothers, Antone Machu and Raymond Machu of Granger; 23 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; one greatgreat-grandchild; one step-granddaughter and three great-stepgrandchildren.
