UT Student Named To The Dean's Honor List

Frances Faye McDonald

Miss McDonald, a 1982 TulosoMidway High School graduate made the Dean's Honor List for the College of Natural Sciences at University of Texas in Austin.

She earned Magna Cum Laude which places her among the upper 2220 percent of the 5,889 students enrolled in the College of Natural Sciences for the fall semester 1982.

Frances Faye is the daughter of Sister Frances McDonald and an exyouth clubber of Robstown Lodge 117.

phone and asked for cakes to be auctioned and we had more beautiful cakes than we had imagined."

"But most of all we would like to thank the buyers, without whom it would not have been possible. Local businesses, bands and even private individuals were buying cakes and then redonating them back to be sold again. And then even donating some of them to the local nursing home."

"We were able to raise in the excess of $3,000 dollars. We would have liked to thank each one individually but the names would have been too numerous," said Faye Gail, manager of SPJST Hall.

March 2nd—Texas Independence Day. If you ask a Texan about the State song of Texas, his answer, nine chances out of ten, will be: "Why, everybody knows 'The Eyes of Texas."

It has become known in all parts of the United States, and our Texas boys, serving in World War II, carried it throughout the world."

So far, as the popularity of the song "The Eyes of Texas" is concerned, the statement may be true. Yet the official song adopted by the resolution of the State Legislature in 1929 is "Texas, Our Texas."

The adopted song of the University of Texas, "The Eyes of Texas," is, however, the favorite song frequently heard at public gatherings and celebrations. It is true that the chorus is known well beyond the Texas boundaries: The eyes of Texas are upon you, All the live-long day.

The eyes of Texas are upon you, You cannot get away, Do not think you can escape them, At night, or early in the morn, The eyes of Texas are upon you, Till Gabriel blows his horn.

The origin of this song is very interesting. William L. Prather, president of the University of Texas in the years 1899-1906, frequently said to the students, "The eyes of Texas are upon you." He once addressed the student body, telling them that on one occasion during the Civil War, a body of soldiers from Texas marched up to be reviewed by General Robert E. Lee. The commanding officer was to have given the warning: "Forward, soldiers of Texas; the eyes of General Lee are upon you."

One year a university minstrel show presented a program. In a pranking mood and knowing that President Prather would be present, the black-faced students sang a song, composed by one John Sinclair, in which the phrase, "the eyes of Texas are upon you," had been used. The words and the tune

Most lenders will try to work out some form of aid for homeowners with good payment records.

Such aid might include temporarily reducing monthly payments or making a new loan secured by the equity built up in the home. *** If you keep electric appliances near water, make sure they are unplugged when not in use, urges the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers and Underwriters Laboratories. Coming into contact with a live electric appliance while you're wet can cause a fatal shock.

An appliance has power in it whenever the plug is in, even if the switch is off. (Do not do as one man did — take a bath in a bathtub with a small radio strapped to his head — gone!) ***

CPC Report Dear Readers: The Corporate Planning Committee (CPC) was established by action of the Supreme Lodge in October, 1981 for the purpose of setting long-range goals and objectives for the SPJST, as reflected in the minutes of the October quarterly meeting.

President Morris and Vice President Gebala conferred and presented the names of two officers and three directors to the Board for their approval. Selected to serve on the committee were Bernie Gebala, Leonard Mikeska, Sid Pokladnik, Ben Trcalek and Thelma Hrncir. The committee has attempted to do its assigned job of setting goals by looking into trends of the economy, social patterns, and problem areas within our Society. It has asked questions, sought solutions, and periodically made recommendations to the Board for their acceptance or rejection. This committee has no power within itself but is only a factfinding, long-range Planning Advisory Committee to the Board.

After meeting during January 10, the committee presented the following recommendations to the Board: 1) The Society would award 14 freshman scholarships and 18 undergraduate scholarships for the fall term of 1983 provided the applicants meet the criterion of the Selection Committee. One freshman and two undergraduate scholarships will be added due to the generous donations

made by individual members, for a total of $26,000. A donation of $1,000 would be made to Mary *HardinBaylor University in appreciation of their handling the selection process.

The 'scholarships will be awarded the recipient at a meeting of their local lodge after their first providing the Supreme Lodge with proof of their enrollment at the college he/she plans to attend. A picture and a news release will be put in the Vestnik and local paper if possible.

2) The Committee recommends that the Czech Language Allocation donations be presented by the director in whose district the college is located, preferably at the Czech class or some appropriate function which will give maximum publicity to the SPJST. The exception will be when the entire SL will present the donation to Temple Junior College.

3) The Society is asked to back a statewide charity project on Child Abuse and Neglect with help from the Department of Human Resources. This would be in addition to any charitable project the local lodges are now supporting. A slide show would be available to the local lodges to tell how we can show our concern for these unfortunate children, as well as posters and brochures. Needs of shelters, foster homes, training for foster parents, food and clothing needs, need for day camps, transportation, school supplies, etc. will be told throughout the State to encourage support from our Society.

4) After the audit held by the Board in January of each year, each officer, other than the president, who submits the report of that office at the year's end, would be encouraged to submit a personal report in the Vestnik to share his reflections of the past year's activities of his department and projected plans for the future. This would help the president's report be more of an overall view of the Society with special attention on the areas which are directly connected with that office.

5) The committee discussed the possibility of building a multipurpose Activity Center to be built in the Temple area, which could be used by our entire membership for large and small meetings, seminars, workshops, youth activities, etc.

This would be further studied by the CPC with subsequent reports being made to the Supreme Lodge.

After much discussion, the Board approved these recommendations and advised the committee to continue supplying pertinent data.

A volunteer from the Board will be asked at the April SL meeting to head the Child Abuse and Neglect project. This volunteer would coordinate the work between the Society and the Texas Department of Human Resources, would be in charge of circulating the film and information to various lodges, and will be available to present ideas to the local lodges on how they can help.

This volunteer would also be responsible for seeing that those outside our Society know about our efforts and success with dealing with this serious problem affecting the lives of thousands of children throughout our State.

Until the April meeting, as secretary of this committee and very concerned with the problem, I have volunteered to head this

project so that the information and resources will be available to our lodges as soon as possible. If any of you readers are already involved in this concern or have a special interest in seeing it launched, please contact Brother Gebala at the Home Office or me and share your ideas and support.

Czech Club at UT

Dear Friends of the Czech Club, The Czech Club at the University of Texas invites you to the Eleventh Annual Conference of Czech Students and Teachers. The conference will be held at SPJST Hall in Taylor, Texas Saturday, April 16, 1983 beginning at 2 p.m. We have found Taylor to be most hospitable for our conferences.

Alief Independent School District is preparing to offer Czech I (Beginning Czech) this summer at its community evening school pending on sufficient interest in the area.

The proposed 9 weeks summer course will be held on Tuesday nights from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. starting June 7th. John J. Karas will be the instructor of this course. Tuition, set by the school district, will be $50. This course will develop basic Czech grammar with simple vocabulary for practical use wherever Czech is spoken.

V Spring Meeting

District

Dear Members, Our spring district meeting will" be Sunday, March 20, 1983, with Pasadena Lodge No. 172 hosting it in their beautiful new lodge home.

A barbecued beef dinner will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Lodge 88 Czech Concert Orchestra and Choral Club will entertain us during this time. Their performance is always a treat you do not want to miss.

After the meeting, which convenes promptly at 1:30 p.m., there will be a free dance from 4 to 8 p.m. for those who bought dinner tickets. The Henry Repka Orchestra will furnish music for your dancing pleasure.

Please mark your calendar for March 20th and come to your District V meeting. Not only will you enjoy the good food and the good entertainment, but you will also have several chances to win nice door prizes if you register by 2 p.m.

Since Valentine's Day was near, Sister Ann Luquette filled a jar with candy hearts so members could guess the amount in the jar. Each member wrote in the amount they guessed next to their name as they signed in. The winner was Sister Annie Foytik with a guess of 321. It was the closest to the actual count of 345.

The "Clan" gathered by the coffee pot for the food and social. Some sandwiches and some of the liquid refreshments were furnished by the lodge. Sisters Sperlik, Haverda, Brdecka, Foytik, Luquette and Nezval furnished enough to fill the table. Everyone present enjoyed themselves.

Lodge Pokrok Houston No. 88 held its regular monthly meeting February 21, 1983 at 7:30 p.m.

Following the Pledge of Allegiance, Secretary Malak read the list of nine deceased members since the last meeting. The members present then stood for a moment of silence in honor and tribute to these deceased members.

The roll call of officers and Advisory Group members indicated two absentees.

The minutes of the meeting of January 17, 1983 were read and approved, followed by the reading of communications received during the month.

President Larry Pflughaupt began the officers reports by making the following announcements: (a) All committees who have Rules & Regulations under which they operate should present copies (in triplicate) to him by the next meeting; (b) All committees who handle money for any reason should record their transactions in a bound book and submit to the Audit Committee monthly; (c) Failure to comply with the foregoing will result in that committee s members being denied invitation to the committee parties; (d) The cost of checking coats and hats at the dances will be increased from $.25 to $.50.

District V President Tillie Helmcamp reminded the members of the District V meeting March 20 at Lodge No. 172, Pasadena. A barbecue dinner will be served and entertainment will include the choral club and orchestra.

The list of new applicants was read by Secretary Malak, followed by initiation of those present.

The flu, here in Houston, is very active and many of our members are victims of this sickness, and it is, in an epidemic stage. Tom and Clara Jecmenek suffered with high fever for two weeks, but, thank goodness, are feeling better now. Mary Kosut, our Sunshine Lady, missed both of our Birthday Club Wednesdays for two weeks, but showed up for last week's social night. (Johnnie must have taken good care of her.) George Pustejovsky, another member of the Choral Club, spent some time in St. Joseph's Hospital and is doing well after his surgery. I was informed by Frances, his wife, that George will be released soon; I hope he is home by now. To all these members we know about and all others, we wish a speedy recovery; we miss you!

With sorrow we parted with Brother Edward John Kadlecek, Sr. who passed away February 15, 1983 at the age of 82. Ed (the name everyone knew him by and called him at Lodge No. 88) was a devoted member from the very first day he transferred to Lodge No. 88. During his membership, Ed took part in everything concerning the lodge's well-being. He served on the Entertainment Committee, on the Board of Trustees, as vice president under several presidents and, finally, as president of Lodge No. 88. Besides holding offices he worked, from the very beginning, on the valuable Social Night Committee Thursday night. Lately his illness kept him from participating but he came around and, only lately, Ed lost interest. Ed was named honorary member of the Board of Trustees and the Social Night Committee.

Members like Ed Kadlecek leave us, but their places cannot be occupied; it is a vacancy that cannot be filled.

Ed will be missed in many ways and our thoughts will be with him always. Surviving Ed Kadlecek are his wife, Louise Kadlecek (who stayed with him day and night to comfort him at home and the last four weeks in the hospital); devoted daughter, Mary Louise and son-inlaw Fletcher Jamar; one son, Edward John and daughter-in-law Marilyn Kadlecek; three grandchildren, Edward J. III, Karen and Nancy Kadlecek, all of New Braunfels, Texas; one sister, Marie Rezek; and two brothers, John and Amos Kadlecek, all of Houston, Texas.

Services were held Thursday at 9 a.m. at Heights Funeral Chapel with Sister Tillie Helmcamp officiating.

Interment was at Forest Park Lawndale Garden of Gethsemani. In Lieu of flowers the family wishes that donations be made to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II in Needville. (This is a very generous gesture.) We members of Lodge No. 88 extend our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our beloved Brother Edward John Kadlecek. Gone, but not forgotten!

A worthwhile project is in the hands of Professor Svatava Jacobson of Austin, Texas. She is sponsored by the Texas Commission on Arts, the Memorial Museum at University of Texas and the Austin Ethnic History Association, which includes Czech national costumes, as made and used here in Texas and focuses on the embroidery decorating these costumes.

Professor Jacobson researches the originality of the embroidery among the Texas Czech population and photographed same, and these will be exhibited in the Memorial Museum for three weeks and finally organized into a traveling exhibit to last about eight months. The program of the exhibit was designed between the representatives of the TCA, MM and the AEHA and Professor Jacobson. The public will be informed when the exhibit will take place to be shown.

6/VESTNiK — Wednesday, March 2, 1983 The two dance dates with Al Pierson's Orchestra held February 18 and 19 were enjoyed by many.

Friday's attendance was fair, but Saturday night the Chandelier Ballroom was overflowing with beautifully-dressed ladies and escorts. The music was great as usual. The dance was in charge of Kathy Trefell, and Mary Schenburn served in the box office. Assisting Kathy were Francis and Marie Spaulding and Dub and Gladys Pulley; the two couples are on the Entertainment Committee for the first time and served at this dance for the first time. The ladies at the door were busy greeting the arriving guests and their spouses helped the guests to their tables. In the lobby, Erma O'Conner and her sister, Irene Slovacek, were taking reservations for future dances.

A lovely baby shower was given to Cindy Wehring Wheeler, daughter of Willie and Edna Wehring, and was held in the lovely home of Wanda Kennedy at 3 p.m.

Sunday afternoon by hostesses Wanda Kennedy, Helen Hegwood and Jodie Bennett. Cindy was assisted by her two sisters, Linda and Debbie. After viewing all the lovely gifts with Ahs 1 and Ohs!, a table of delicious food was served, buffet-style, in the dining room.

Refreshing drinks were served through the time of opening gifts by the beautiful and lovely mother-tobe, very soon. Congratulations!

The monthly lodge meeting held Monday, February 21 had a very nice attendance and it was nice to see Minnie Bravenec with us for the first time after her accident. Mary Johnson reported her brother, Ed Sustala, was having heart surgery in Spring Branch Memorial Hospital.

Rosie Mrosko is also ailing. Tillie Helmcamp reported one of our older members, Sister Vlasta Stasta, being in bad health and her eyesight is failing her. Best wishes for good health to all!

English Play Director Marie Stayton announced an English play will be presented Sunday, May 22 and rehearsals are in progress; more on this later.

After a long spell of inactivity of the Choral Club, Director Tim Kostom announced rehearsals will begin as before, from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday night accompanied by Pianist Naomi Spencer; with the Czech Concert Orchestra every fourth Wednesday directed by Rudy Dybala. Please, members, take note of this!

The Blue Room scheduled a party for Sunday, May 1 in the Chandelier Ballroom, as usual, with cocktails, dinner and dance, admission $10, per person. If you ever attended one, you know it is great. Make your reservations as soon as tickets will be at the lodge office. Sister Josephone Pflughaupt will gladly help you. Remember, May 1, 1983, a Sunday!

Dear Members and Friends: First, I want to thank everyone for all the get-well wishes I received.

It's a good feeling to- be remembered. I had a 9-day hospital stay for another bout with pneumonia and I am still recuperating at home. I heard there were a lot of people sick and do hope they are all doing better.

We were all saddened to hear of the passing away of Sister Mary Hubenak of Lodge 92. She was a good friend to many of us. Brother Richard and all your loved ones, we extend our heartfelt sympathy. May she rest in eternal peace.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, March 13th at 3 p.m.; it will be time to make plans for the Annual Easter Picnic, and for the District III meeting, April 10th.

Our next Country/Western Dance will be Saturday, March 5th with the Centres. Everyone who has heard them says they are real good.

Seaton Choral Club News The Seaton Choral Club came out of winter hibernation with a "whoop and a holler" of joyous Czech singing Tuesday night at Seaton Star Hall.

Inside everything was very cheerful and bright as our manager's wife, Joyce Tesar, had decorated every table with a Valentine Theme.

Mary Powers, president, called our meeting to order. Hermina Cihacek filled in, again, for Mary Ann Krivanek as treasurer and Lillie McMillen filled in for Clara Marchioni as secretary.

Cards were sent to Carl Zich, Al Svacek and Dona Hubenak and three dollars were sent to Bennie Bartek; she was in the hospital.

Mary Pavey thanked everyone who had sent cards to her sister who was in the hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. We missed Mary Cihacek who had fallen and injured her knee.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Bennie Bartek, Clara Cohen, Maggie Konecny and Rose Nieswiodomy.

Visitors were Milady Hejl, Jeanette and John Tesar, and Mary and Benny Pavey.

Members voted that, from now on for the rest of the year, each member is to bring a covered dish.

Hostess Chairman Maggie Konecny will ask for four volunteers each time to serve the food for the lunch and take care of the kitchen afterward. The hostesses who volunteered for our February meeting were Phyllis Cihacek, Tillie Gillis, Frances Grizzard, and Maggie Konecny.

The Rose Zalachek won the door prize donated by Flora Koci. Helen Paprskar will donate the door prize WANTED: for our March meeting.

Head of the Youth Department STATEWIDE YOUTH LEADERS' RETREAT Another recommendation was that we hold this year's Statewide Youth Leaders' Retreat at Camp Val Verde May 14th and 15th for all DYCs, assistant DYCs, youth leaders and assistants, including spouses. The training would begin Saturday morning and last through Sunday noon. It is expected that some of those desiring to attend will want to arrive sometime Friday evening or Friday night in order to be ready for the training Saturday morning. This recommendation was approved by the Supreme Lodge.

The Supreme Lodge will pay for the leasing of Camp Val Verde for that period, all meals, and mileage for one car from each lodge. This will probably require some arrangements on car pooling so that we do not have to pay mileage to every individual coming by automobile. As in the case of Longhorn, we are asking that you come prepared to stay for the duration of the training from Saturday morning through Sunday noon. N^ remuneration for mileage will be paici for those who do not stay for the entire training period. I think he reason for this is obvious. If you do have to go back home Saturday night, we ask that you return again Sunday morning with mileage reimbursement for only one round trip.

We hope you will be making plans to attend this Youth Leaders' Retreat because there is much valuable information to be gained pertaining to all facets of our youth program. If you plan to attend, please send us your name, lodge number, the total number of persons coming with you, and a statement to the effect that you will be present for the entire training session. For purposes of finalizing lodging and meal arrangements, we are asking that you notify us no later than Monday, May 9th.

Imorrom■■ FEBRUARY VESTNIK PROJECT Dear Youth Club Members: The Vestnik project for February is going to be slightly different from the previous projects. We have given you word mazes, puzzles, matching, and questions concerning the SPJST and your Czech heritage.

You have learned many facts about your ancestors and our fraternal organizations.

This month's project is going to be a written composition on one of the following topics: a) What I Enjoy About Being An SPJST Youth Club Member b) Youth — Future Leaders Of The SPJST c) Things I Would Change To Improve The SPJST In The Future All compositions are to be written in the participant's own words. They will be graded on: 1) Contents; originality 2) Good grammar and correct spelling 3) Neatness 4) Juniors must submit 200 words or more 5) Teens must submit 400 words or more You need to show the following information: a) Title of composition b) Name and age of youth and complete address c) Lodge number and youth leader This project is different and based totally on your ideas and feelings concerning the SPJST. We feel it is time to hear from our young people.

You are the potential leaders of the future.

There are no wrong answers in this project. Each youth submitting a composition will earn 20 points for a composition that meets the outlined requirements.

All project are due no later than March 15th.

We had a Valentine Party February 11th. Boxes were made and decorated and we also had games.

Our Easter Party will be March 27th. We also plan to have a kite contest.

The birthday for the month was for Tammy Mynar. Karen Hykel will bring the cake to the next month's meeting. Darrell Uptmor brought the Valentine cake.

Our regular business meeting for Lodge 179 Youth Club was scheduled for February 10 but this was the night of the Beta Club pancake supper _ and bonfire. All three of our teen members namely, Rhonda Eckermann, Kim Gebhard, Sue Lynn Schoenst and our Leader Doris Eckermann, Assistant Jeanette Schoenst and Doris Gebhard were frying pancakes.

At our meeting we served a stew supper.

Friday night was Homecoming at RTC-the game was against Burton.

All of our members were in attendance. Our President Sue Lynn Schoenst was crowned Homecoming Queen for 1983 by another former member Melissa Wickel.

Dear Vestnik Readers, Friday, February 11, 1983 some members of the Taiton SPJST Youth Club visited the Hillje Rest Home and brought the residents valentines that they put on the residents' food trays Valentine's Day. TAITON YC RECEIVES MONEY FROM MOTHER LODGE Dear Vestnik Readers, The SPJST Taiton Lodge 30 Youth Club held their February monthly meeting the 6th at 2:30 p.m.

For our next event we will go see a movie; the date will be decided at our next meeting.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 33, Bleiblerville, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed sister, MRS. TILLIE E. SCHLUENZ, age 89, who passed away in a Temple hospital at 4:30 p.m.

Monday, January 17, 1983. She had been in failing health for the past year and a half.

Sister Schluenz was born 6 December 1893 at Bellville, being the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Buelow. She was reared in Bellville and attended Bellville Public Schools.

She was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church of Bellville, the Ladies Aide of the Church, The Eastern Star of Bellville, SPJST Lodge No. 33, Bellville Barracks, American Legion Auxiliary, and Concordia Singing Society.

The former Miss Tillie Buelow was married to August Schluenz 1 April 1919 in ceremonies performed in Brenham. Mr. Schluenz died 26 October 1951.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Jack Rosinski; son, W. H. Schluenz, all of Bellville; sister, Miss Martina Buelow of Bellville; four grandchildren; and one greatgrandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister and one brother.

Pallbearers were David Peterson, Joe Todd, Donald J. Hanson, Harry Binar, Claude Schluenz and Calvin Waak.

Funeral services were held from the Chapel of the Pete E. Etlinger Funeral Home in Bellville at 2 p.m.

A rosary was recited in the Triska Chapel Thursday at 7 p.m. The body lay-in-state at the funeral home until 9 a.m. Friday, when it was taken to the church for the funeral.

Mrs. Corley was born Sept. 19, 1902 in Jackson County to the late Carl P. and Mary Blaise Michaelsen.

She had lived in El Campo 44 years.

For several years Doris worked in the offices of Wyatts Industries, working in their various departments. When she worked in the Credit Department, she was especially known for her willingness to help all who came to her with problems.

A Story About Sokol Once upon a time, about 100 years ago, there was a group of distinguished young men unusually interested in physical exercise.

They practiced calisthenics, marching, fencing, wrestling (along classic lines), on apparatus and athletics in the gymnasiums of professional instructors. There were no parks with equipment or gymnasiums where they could practice such as we have today. All of these men were educated. They were lawyers, doctors, newspaper editors, government officials, school teachers, successful businessmen, expert workmen in many trades.

They were above all intensely patriotic, and democratic in spirit.

One man in this group of exceptional men was a university instructor, a great art critic, a keen student of history, especially that of ancient Greece. He was also a philosopher, a writer, eloquent speaker, fine organizer and a dreamer. He believed in his fellowman, recognized the force in everyone for good or evil. He knew man must be trained from early childhood to fulfill his role in life to the fullest.

His country was ruled by a monarchy, hostile for 300 years to the yearning of his people for liberty and independence. This young man's name was Dr. Miroslav Tyrs.

All of these men knew and trusted each other. They saw in one another the same longing for freedom, for the chance to develop themselves as free men, to make their country a democracy such as they had read of across the ocean (the United States of America). They had fine minds and great courage. They worked tirelessly, by every honorable means, to try to secure justice for their people. The rulers stubbornly refused to make any concessions.

They still believed in the medieval idea of the divine right of kings.

Dr. Tyrs knew well the hard road and long years of preparation ahead of him, to help his nation gain its independence. He traveled far in the course of his studies and his work as a teacher. Everywhere he went he also studied the people, their government and their reactions to it. When he came home he would study, just as critically, his own people, their physical build, their mental ability, their attitude toward the monarchy and their manifestations of resolute courage.

And he found them to be good, eager to learn and to make great sacrifices to attain their dream - independence.

He decided that a people showing such vitality and progress in the face of obstinate resistance was worthy of becoming a free nation, an honorable member of the family of nations. He felt that his people had much to offer the world and history has proved that he was right. It took all of this to crystalize in his mind a plan of action for the success of his hopes.

Being a university iNtructor of aesthetics, and from his studies of philosophy, he knew that physical, mental, moral and spiritual training

must go hand in hand to create a complete individual. A great mind in a feeble, sick body without moral and spiritual discipline could become the tool of the clever and un principled. Now he began to study with intensity and perception every conceivable type of physical training. Ancient, military, medieval and modern all become grist for his mental mill.

When he was ready he told his friends of his ideas and ideals, and of his plans to make them a reality.

They were kindred spirits with a record of resolute action, true fighters for independence. They immediately grasped the value of his ideas and the purity of his ideals.

They were men of thought and action, capable of achieving their purpose without flinching. In a matter of a few months they drew up a set of rules and by-laws, secured a grudging permission from the authorities, had an organization meeting, election of officers and committees, secured a gymnasium for themselves and on February 16, 1862, in Praha, THE SOKOL WAS BORN. Seventy-four men attended the first meeting. The foundations for an organization with far reaching influence were laid a century ago amid conditions not too different from those of today. We have a cold war, international tension and new nations being formed from colonial empires. The 1850's and 1860's saw the cracking of autocratic rule, wars in many places, civil war in the U.S.A. and general unrest as national groups began preparations for their independence, or had just secured it. Europe, the Americas, Asia and Africa were experiencing the early ferment of social, political and economic changes so drastically speeded up in the last few decades.

Most of today's new nations had independence practically thrust upon them with little or no experience, education or ability in anything except the most primitive forms of life. They have no traditions of their own past accomplishments, no precedents to guide them, a handful of leaders just a little ahead of their primitive fellow citizens.

Compare this with the American Colonies when they secured their independence. "A nation of lawyers," Fox called them. Mostly self-taught, they had brains, experience, tradition, courage and ability of high order. The same applied to the Czech lands. Although just emerging from the subjugation of two centuries of autocratic misrule, they had produced a John Hus, Zizka, George of Podebrad, Comenius and scores of others, men of international stature.

The period of reawakening was guided by men of the same caliber culminating in Havlicek, Palacky, Rieger, Fuegner, Tyrs and the Gregors and hundreds of others.

The nation was highly literate, beginning to make its influence felt internationally in science, the arts, music, literature as well as in commerce and manufacturing. This then became the nation of Masaryk and Benes.

We get a better understanding of the force and tenacity inherent in the Sokol as we check and group the caliber of its founders and early supporters. Twenty percent had Doctor Degrees in Law, Medicine,

12/VESTMK — Wednesday, March 2,1983 etc. Two were editors, 8 lawyers, 1 builder, 6 manufacturers, 14 businessmen, 11 expert technicians, 3 CPA, 2 Doctors of Medicine, 1 banker, 1 gym instructor, 2 wholesalers, 4 officials, 3 millers, 2 printers, 2 large landowners, 2 insurance brokers, 2 professors, 2 engravers. The intellectual, scientific, social, political, business and professional cream of the nation was in the Sokol ranks within a short time.

Names like Palacky, Rieger, Purkyne, Majdl and scores of others were well known internationally in their professions as well as those of artists and sculptors.

The idea of physical fitness and training for a complete all around development was well understood by all of these men. They also appreciated its benefit to the nation both as a preparation for independence and school for responsible citizenship. The ideals of human perfection, physical, mental, moral and spiritual, coupled with an intelligent patriotism and democracy in the Sokol ranks secured their devotion and lifetime adherence.

Such a membership and such high goals were bound to affect the entire nation. As the Sokol grew and by its example of self-discipline, intelligent training and efforts, and devotion to its program and ideals, it became a model for national behavior. The Sokol was a rallying point also for every great project, cultural, artistic, social and educational. It was influenced by them and in return left its own imprint on all phases of life.

blundering in the years of suppression, forbade his use pf the Czech flag. He would not fly the Austrian banner, instead he proudly flew the Star and Stripes.

These men saw and were disgusted with the groveling mannerisms enacted before government officials or any person of means and influence. They knew it was debasing to any individual's character. Therefore they instituted full democracy in the Sokol ranks using the terms brother and sister regardless of the wealth or social standing of any individual. The wealthier helped the poorer, each gave to the Sokol treasury in accordance with his means. No one expected or accepted payment of any kind in spite of their intensive work in the Sokol. This they accepted as a matter of course, considering it as their contribution to the advancement and welfare of the nation. Their only reward was the satisfaction every man feels within himself when he knows he is obeying his conscience.

Even in the gymnasium, every move was analyzed to make certain it obeyed aesthetic rules, eliminating everything crude and suggestive. They were humanists and realists. They knew that no true advance could be made in human progress until all humanity became developed to their ideal of "Physical Perfection Joined With a Noble Mind". They could not persuade the entire world to start on the road simultaneously with them, but they could by their example set a precedent.

These were the raw materials needed for the creation of your Sokol.

Before advancing too far with our narrative let us take a second and more searching look at these early years. Any conscientious architect and builder would do the same.

After all anything built upon shaky foundations would be doomed to a short and disastrous life.

We have read of the caliber and ability of the men who created the Sokol. Let us now examine the mechanics they intended to employ and check some of their immediate precedents. The French Revolution was still a potent force in an idealistic way, but it was the American Revolution and the progress of that nation that had an unquestioned impact upon the founders. Let us remember that they were still governed by the Hapsburgs, a monarchy that never learned anything and had long outlived its purpose. It even alienated great numbers of its own aristocracy who became ardent Czech patriots.

It is the little things that show the course of thinking when a frank avowal of intent would kill an infant project. The founders of Sokol knew their history, not only ancient and medieval but current as well.

Fuegner for instance was a great admirer of Washington and Franklin, but especially of Thomas Jefferson. He knew and admired the American Constitution, Declaration of Independence as well as details of the young nation's problems and their methods of solution. A little incident is enlightening. A long, hard road stretched ahead of them. They had set out upon it fully realizing what lay ahead. Their accomplishments and setbacks and their influence elsewhere, even here in the USA, will be related in subsequent chapters.

It may seem to some that too much time is being spent upon the beginnings of Sokol. But it was exactly this period that set the pace for the future and established precedents just as valid today as when first formulated. Showing the type of people, their chracteristics and accomplishments, their intense patriotism and dedication to the Sokol ideals is of the greatest importance. The Sokols became a reality because of them.

Can anyone think of our own Revolutionary War, and the reality it created without having the visual figures of that historic period immediately crowd into the forefront of his mind? Washington, Jefferson, John and Samuel Adams, John Hancock, Franklin, Madison, Monroe, Tom Paine, Morris, Hamilton are just a few of the Americans. The foreigners included the young, impetuous LaFayette, the Prussian disciplinarian Von Steuben, the fiery Poles Kosciuszko and Pulaski (the latter died fighting in the South). These were men, great men in other phases of life who voluntarily came together, pooling their talents to create an ideal, the United States of America and what it means in this world.

So you see the more we know about the people in great movements the more we value them.

The creation becomes alive, pregnant with inspiration, urging us to do our utmost to emulate them in their efforts. The more we do so, the

greater becomes our understanding for their goals, invariably enriching our lives. Mankind must have freedom to think, plan and carry out its dreams. It must also have selfdiscipline, perseverance and enlightened leadership and training.

Only those who are afraid or know the weaknesses of their own system of government refuse to grant liberty to everyone. But even in the greatest democracies there are elements who feel they know it all and are ordained to impose their thinking and rule upon the masses.

Liberty and freedom at all times requires diligence, watchfullness and intelligence coupled with courage and dedication.

Let us return now to our early Sokol period, the mid 1860's. The gymnastic training was for the men only. No program on a large scale had been worked out as yet for the women and children. Dr. Tyrs with Dr. Musil's help had founded a school for boys in 1865 and secured a fine young woman, Klemena Hanusova, to lead the Prague Women's and Girls' gymnastic club.

It took decades before these were generally accepted. In the meantime future instructors were being trained and through trial and error the work progressed. This long range planning proved itself when the barriers of prejudice were swept aside and a full scale program of training became possible.

Many Sokol units were formed in Bohemia and Moravia in 1862 and 1863. They were all independent as the Austrian government would not permit a central organization. In 1864 the first unit was formed in Slovenia and in 1865 enough had been learned about the Sokol ideals and purpose to enable the founding of the first Sokol unit in. America, at St. Louis, Missouri, on February 14, 1865. It is to be expected that the early methods of training and the apparatus itself were rudimentary.

It was not until 1867 that Dr. Tyrs published his now famous "Fundamental Principles of Physical Culture." This was the basis upon which his talented students and followers built until the structure today has the admiration of the entire world.

So much went into this work. The thinking, experimentation and planning of eminent physiologists, doctors, writers, artists and experts in many other fields were all needed to assure the future of the Sokols.

Dr. Purkyne, world renowned physiologist, visited the gymnasium regularly, lecturing on the construction and function of the entire body and pointing out the exercises that were beneficial and those that could be harmful. Manes, the first truly great Czech painter, designed the Sokol uniform and beautiful Sokol flags as well as stressing the need for inspired beauty in exercise and life as a whole. Jindrich Fuegner was the philanthropist, who built the first Sokol gymnasium, instituted democracy in the organization and set a precedent for every Sokol leader in self-sacrifice and intelligent patriotism.

Dr. Tyrs was the man who made his dreams come true. He saw his brain child grow from its conception to a potent force in the nation.

Creator of the Sokol technical system, organizer, writer, editor,

outstanding speaker, idealist par excellence, teacher, all of this and more composed the man who gave the world a great goal "Physical Perfection Joined With a Noble Mind". There were others, hundreds of them, including Drs. Thomas Cerny, Julius Gregor, Edward Gregor, each bringing to the fledgling organization the wealth of their own minds, varied talents and their unstinted material generosity.

These are qualities we seem to have forgotten in our own relationship to Sokol. It is not enough to belong if one is to feel the vibration of the full significance of everything the Sokol can mean to the individual and the country. One must give himself to it body and soul, then and only then will it become the potent force here that it was in the land of its creation.

For a change of pace let us cross now to our side of the Atlantic Ocean. As had been mentioned, enough was learned about the Sokol, its idea and ideals to see the creation of the first Sokol unit here at St. Louis, Missouri, on February 14, 1865. This was followed the next year by the first unit in Chicago, in 1866; New York, 1867; the second in Chicago, in 1868; Morrissania, New York, 1869; Cleveland, 1875; Omaha, 1877. From this beginning Sokol spread throughout the United States, to big cities and small towns, wherever there were settlements of Czech and Slovak immigrants. The first central organization was the National Union Sokol, (1879), followed by District Fuegner Tyrs, (1897). These united in 1917 to form our present American Sokol Organization. Item of Interest SANITIZING AND REMOVING ODORS FROM REFRIGERATOR AND FREEZER If water has seeped into refrigerator or freezer, sanitize it before using it again. If insulation is wet, the appliance may have to be discarded eventually as it may run continuously, frost up on the outside or develop bad odors. Before cleaning and sanitizing a refrigerator or freezer, be sure motor and freezing unit are in safe working order.

1. Dispose of any spoiled or questionable food as described above.

2. Remove shelves, crispers and ice trays.

Wash them thoroughly with hot water and detergent.

3. Rinse with a disinfectant solution (1 teaspoon chlorine bleach for each gallon of water).

4. Wash the interior of the refrigerator, including the door and door gasket, with hot water and baking soda, vinegar or household ammonia.

5. Rinse with disinfectant solution.

6. Leave the door open for about 15 minutes to allow free air circulation.

7. If odor remains, activated charcoal (available at drugstores) will soak up persistent odors. Spread about 3 ounces of the fine powdered charcoal on a sheet of aluminum foil or in a shallow pan and place on refrigerator or freezer shelf. Foods can be kept in the cleaned refrigerator with the charcoal. After 6 or 8 hours, heat the pan of charcoal in a moderate (350°F) oven to reactivate the charcoal so it can be reused. Put the charcoal back in the refrigerator. Repeat the process until the odor disappears.

8. Even if traces of the odor remain, securely wrapped frozen food will not be affected.

When you take out a package, remove wrappings as soon as possible and dispose of them immediately.

Minult tyrden jsem byli v Ennis, byl tak krasny jarni den a tak jsme se vydali podivat na ptatele a plibuzne a pekne jsme toho vpaili. Tam jsme se dovedeli, ze nedelni sokolska oslava 12 a 13. tinora se pekne jim vydatila.

Navkeva pry byla velice dobra, program pekny a obed moc chutnt.

Ja jsem eekala nav gevu z West a tak jsme nikam nejeli, ale ptejeme jimze Nte se vydatilo. To bylo 75. to vtroei zalokni Sokola v Ennis a to uz je zvlattni vtroei, k ano?

In our opinion, that's a faulty assumption.

Witness the dinosaur. Being big didn't save him. In fact, it probably hastened his demise.

For the dinosaur grew too large for his limited brain. As a result, signals took too long to get from one part of the body to another. In the end, he simply couldn't respond quickly enough to change.
