Aloisie Orsak Kopinitz Outlives Policy Sister Aloisie Orsak Kopinitz, a member of SPJST Lodge No. 88, became the 62nd person in the history of the SPJST to outlive the actuarial table for her life insurance policy with the Society. She celebrated her 96th birthday October 16, 1982. She has been a member of SPJST Lodge No. 88 since 1936.

Sister Kopinitz came to America from Moravia, Czechoslovakia in

1913. She arrived in Baltimore, Maryland and from there made her way to Houston, Texas where she met and married Emmett Orsak.

The young couple lived in Houston and East Bernard and in the early 1920s settled in Sheldon. She and her husband operated a vegetable and livestock farm. For many years, Mr. Orsak sold home-grown vegetables, groceries and freshly slaughtered meat to residents living in the Sheldon and Crosby area.

Aloisie's hobbies were gardening, cultivation of fruit trees and she especially enjoyed having many beautiful flowers in her yard. She was known to be a hard worker all her life.

We thank Sister Josephine Pflughaupt and Sister Ruby Bulanek for the information needed to prepare this article.

The Supreme Lodge, the members of Lodge No. 88 and the entire SPJST membership salute Sister Kopinitz on her 96th Birthday and wish her well.

THE ART OF GIVING The art of giving encompasses many areas. Emerson said it well: "Rings and jewels are not gifts, but apologies for gifts. The only true gift is a portion of thyself."

We give of ourselves when we give gifts of the heart: love, kindness, joy, understanding, sympathy, forgiveness.

We give of ourselves when we give gifts of the mind: ideas, dreams, purposes, ideals, principles, plans, inventions, projects, poetry.

We give of ourselves when we give gifts of the spirit: prayer, beauty, aspiration, faith.

We give of ourselves when we give the gift of time: patience, attention, consideration.

We give of ourselves when we give the gift of words: encouragement, inspiration, guidance.

The finest gift a man can give to his age and time is the gift of a constructive and creative life.

—Wilfred A. Peterson The Vestnik is your paper which brings significant news of the activities in your lodge to the local members. It is the type of news which would stimulate other members and other lodges to a friendly rivalry.

In case you do not have a regular reporter, select or appoint one in your forthcoming meeting. What you need is a volunteer who would reach for a sheet of paper with a feeling of gladness, pride and enthusiasm to tell others of your lodge happenings, to share with others your experiences, and to present some new ideas and some newsy items.

An inexperienced reporter may object that he/she do not know what to write about. Do we avoid meeting people for the fear of not knowing what to talk about? Most of the material sent to your official paper for publication will be informal. It will consist of the unceremonious exchange of news, plans, ideas and/or experiences.

Those who do something in your lodge and do it well are the ones to be mentioned. Today it is necessary to recognize those who are able to give guidance, help and advice, whether it is in a fraternal organization or in business. Your lodge may have several members who have served faithfully for many years in the same official position.

They may be an individual with qualities that should be mentioned.

It is the least that you can do for them by writing a word of appreciation about him or her. Or they may not hold any office in your lodge now, but—wait a second — wasn't he or she the one who was your delegate to the SPJST Convention for several times? Or the oldest member living, etc.?

Another thought to write about would be ideas. Although it is loosely used for any vague conception, supposition or fancy, here, in our publication, it denotes a good or

practical plan, solution or suggestion. Every successful meeting brings forth several ideas or plans to solve certain problems.

The problems of one lodge are similar to the problems of other lodges. Can you share the success of your plan with others? We know you can. What you need is someone to explain the working of your procedure. Again you will enrich your own paper.

Perhaps some of you may have an ideal that may come close to those who are urging changes, amendments, etc., but we can avoid the extreme by stating that an ideal is a standard of excellence, an aim of constant striving for practical improvements. A scientist may say that a perfect circle is an ideal impossible to construct, but we may always strive "to form a more perfect union" in our fraternal circles. *** Our SPJST fraternity is equipped to render complete life insurance service, and is ready and eager to help you in any way possible. This free service is available to you as a member any time you ask for it. You should feel at perfect liberty to call upon any trained sales representative within your area or local lodge officer and/or district director for assistance any time you feel that you need additional life insurance.

One point that we wish to stress strongly from time to time is: Read your membership certificate. Take it out from your file and get acquainted with its provisions and benefits. Be sure that you understand it. Other members have done it in the past so as, to take care of any new insurance or any changes in the certificate. The SPJST certificates are prepared for the benefit of all members, according to the decisions of the members during the regular conventions held every four years.

Brothers and Sisters: Your point of view regarding any improvement in your protection will always be given due consideration.

If the person sitting next to you in a restaurant — or in your home — starts choking on a piece of meat, a simple technique developed by a surgeon, offers a way in which you can help.

THE HEIMLICH MANEUVER is a procedure which was worked out

by Dr. Henry Heimlich, director of surgery at Cincinnati Jewish Hospital, who started research after reading that over 2,000 Americans choked to death in one year on food or other objects. His "maneuver" goes like this: Standing behind the victim, place your arms around his waist, slightly above the belt line. Allow his head, arms and upper torso to hang forward.

Grasping one wrist formed in a fist with the other hand, press into the victim's abdomen rapidly and forcefully repeating several times.

This "reverse bearhug" pushes up on the diaphragm, compresses the air in the lungs and expels the object blocking the breathing passage.

Up to now, choking victims often died unless a doctor was around to cut an air passage into the throat or a special instrument to remove the block was readily available. Reports received by Dr. Heimlich tell of hundreds of lives saved since he described the "maneuver" in a medical journal in 1974.

Notice To Alief and Surrounding Area Alief Independent School District is preparing to offer Czech I (Beginning Czech) this summer at its community evening school pending on sufficient interest in the area.

The proposed 9 weeks summer course will be held on Tuesday nights from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. starting June 7th. John J. Karas will be the instructor of this course. Tuition, set by the school district, will be $50. This course will develop basic Czech grammar with simple vocabulary for practical use wherever Czech is spoken.

Officers and commit tee persons are busily planning for another good year Our attendance is good at our Saturday night socials, although we have had a lot of sickness among our members. Mr. Jake Crouch and Mr. Cloyce Millwee, who work our ticket window, are both sick; filling in for them Saturday night, January 29 were Marie Wright and Creola Wilcox. Mr. Russell of Huntington is sick and in a Houston hospital. Mr. Sam Allbright has been sick. We hope they will be well and with us again, soon.

A couple of years ago, I wrote in my newslet ter about Wayne Stewart, a young member of our lodge, being drafted by the Astros and White Sox, which he declined, in order to continue his education. It is a pleasure to report again that he has now signed with the Philadelphia Phillies..He will be leaving February 25th to go to the Florida Camp.

Wayne is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Paul Stewart of Crockett; his paternal grandmother is Mrs. Sylvia Stewart of Lovelady, and grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Mays of Crockett. We all know and love the Stewart and Leonard May families and enjoy having them all associated with our Lodge No. 74. We will all be following Wayne's baseball career and wishing him the very best.

Dallas Lodge 84 Officers Installed Dear Members: February 20th at 3 p.m. we have our next lodge meeting, afterward new members will be initiated into our lodge and will be guests for the dinner served. It's always a pleasant time to meet new members and make them feel welcome. The menu will consist of spaghetti with meat sauce, salad, garlic bread, dessert and drink; it's for adults at $2 per plate and children, $1. The lodge asks our pastry makers to please bring pastry for this event.

March 20th is our 73rd anniversary celebration so please mark this date on your 1983 calendar, also. The lodge monthly meeting will be March 21st at 7:30 p.m. Watch for details for this 73rd lodge birthday because you will want to come.

The membership is under the leadership of dedicated lodge workers who were installed into office during our Christmas celebration by District III Sid Pokladnik: namely, President-Joseph Ondrusek, Vice President-Ron Coker, Secretary-Evelyn Salac, Treasurer-Carlyn Ondrusek, Finan cial-Secretary-Linda Coker, Sergeant-at-Arms-C. J. Olson, Flag Bearer-Cherri •Petr and Youth Leader-Bessie Petr. We congratulate this fine slate of officers who are keenly aware of the responsibilities these offices hold.

In December 1982-Lodge 84 said goodbye to a dedicated member, Brother Jerome Rejcek who served as its sergeant-at-arms for ever so many years. To the family, who loved him very much, we extend our sympathy; may he rest in peace! We will miss this man who was always willing to lend a hand for the betterment of his fraternal home, which he served so well.

As reported in the last meeting by Youth Leader Bessie Petr, the youth is involved in presenting an anniversary program; she also commented that good reports were given by all who enjoyed the Christmas program performed by the children.

The Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council will be hosted by SPJST Lodge 130 Wednesday, February 23rd at the Sokol Hail, 7448 Greenville Avenue at 7:30 p.m.; you are invited to attend.

Brother Ben Jarma, on behalf of the softball team, presented to our lodge a trophy during the lodge meeting last Monday; he also gave his annual financial report for the team.

Vice President Ron Coker also gave his annual financial report as well as the entertainment report.

Auditor Gilbert Kalich gave a good report on the lodge books and commended Sister Lillie Jarma who did a great job of bookkeeping. We wish to thank Lillie for serving the lodge as financial secretary. She will be missed but she promised to give our new officer, Sister Linda Coker any help needed to groom her as Lodge 84's best bookkeeper.

Lodge No. 88 News Try as you may there will be a mistake made when a lot of names are copied. In my January 26 letter in the Vestnik, I left out two names; I do apologize; it was not intentional (just one of those things). The first name was Sister Vera McCaskill serving on the Entertainment Committee. I reported her husband's name, but overlooked Vera's. Every one of the Entertainment Committee members are essential to our lodge and without them we could not function; they are kept busy throughout the year without any compensation.

The second name I overlooked was Sisteer Ann Urbanovsky serving on the the Social Night. This committee works every Thursday night of the year and all of them are volunteers and love to do it. This unit is very valuable to our lodge just as all the rest elected or appointed committees. The 20 Social Night members are proud to serve the lodge in this valuable capacity.

Vera and Ann, I am sorry, but I cannot guarantee it won't happen again. I do hope you do understand.

The Knights of Dixie played Saturday night, January 22 for a very lovely group of guests. This dance required a dress code and this rule was followed by the attending guests to the satisfaction of the dance committee. The Chandelier Ballroom was filled with lovely, dressed ladies. In char of the night was Gus Urbanovsky and also, in the box office; his wife, Ann, dressed in a black and pink gown, helped George Butcheck and H. Dorn seat the guests; Mary Butcheck, dressed in a black and white gown, and Lill Dorn, dressed in a wine-colored gown, greeted the arriving guests. The three sisters looked very lovely.

The last dance of the month, with

music by the Ellinger Combo playing variety and country-western music, had a very nice following. It was nice to see Henry Kite attending with his wife, Adel, and enjoying the company of friends; it was nice to see you! About 30 guests surrounded three tables to celebrate the 32nd wedding anniversary of Bill and Millie Krause. This party included one daughter, three sisters, nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

Congratulations and many more! At another table, the birthday of Dorothy Bohac was observed by her family and friends. Dorothy wore a most beautiful corsage given to her by her husband, Stanley. Five of their children were present to celebrate their mother's birthday; namely, Janie (Bohac) Camp and husband, Donnie; Larry Bohac and wife, Susie; Jerryl Bohac and wife, Nancy; Dany Bohac and his lovely friend, Dennise Mueck; and daughter, Linda Bohac and friends made up the birthday party. A delicious cake and snacks were brought by Gertrude and Leon Luksa. Happy Birthday, Dorothy! In charge of this dance was Evelyn Zientek; her husband, Ed served in the ticket office while Bob Martinak directed the guests to their reserved places. Sister Ruth Martinak greeted the arriving guests. It was a very good dance with everyone having a good time.

In the Blue Room, Ed and Polly Klessel with Bob and wife, Margaret Allbritton, enjoyed a refreshing drink served by friendly bartender, Nat. We missed Herman and Lucille Reed for quite a while now. Lucille isn't quite over her ordeal; she can walk but cannot put her whole weight down; she uses a walker, but Ed said it won't be long and she will be OK. We miss you.

Brother Tim Kostom is home now after spending some time in the hospital. Rosalee brought him home Friday, the 28th and he doesn't have to go back until in two weeks for a check-up. Take care and stay well!

Brother Ed Kadlecek was taken to Heights Hospital by his wife, Louise, Wednesday, January 26; today is the 29th and I was informed Ed is in the Intensive Care Unit for a few days before being placed in a room. Ed, we all miss you!

Jimmie Kadlecek, son of Amos and Della Kadlecek, was also in the Diagnostic Hospital for one week to have surgery (the 17th) and was released January 24th. Jimmie was located on the 5th floor and Tim Kostom on the 4th floor; while there, both visited quite a bit and exercised by walking in the hospital corridor and visiting other patients.

Henry Olexa winged to Oslo, Norway for a 7-day business trip; leaving Houston Monday (the 17th) and arrived home on the 24th. His wife also was away since January 9th and arrived home the same time from Odessa, Texas where she stayed at their daughter's home while Sandy Segner underwent surgery. For two weeks Della took care of her two granddaughters, Angie, age 9 and Brenda, 6. Of course, the two loved to have grandmother around and the son in law, Pat, didn't mind the convenience. My granddaughter, Sandy, is doing fine and Henry, after his trip, had a time to stabilize his sleeping schedule which is about 7

hours difference; by now their household is regulated.

I was sad to hear that Henry Krampota, member of Lodge No. 162, Iowa Colony, passed away Wednesday, January 26, 1983 in the home of his sister, Vlasta Smith after a lengthly illness. Henry was the brother-in-law of my late brother, Joe Dvorak, and brother to Joe's late wife, Albina (Krampota) Dvorak. Henry was laid to rest Thursday, January 27th in the Manville Cemetery at 2 p.m.

Survivors are: daughter, Helen and her husband, Troy McGee;. son, Richard Krampota and wife, Wanda; five grandchildren; two brothers, Louis and Alfred Krampota of Alvin; and five sisters, Milady Martin and Lydie Broz, both of Houston and Mattie Herring, Vlasta Smith and Delores Norris from Alvin. We extend our sincere sympathy to the surviving family of Henry Krampota.

We were sad to learn Brother Edward W. Florian passed away Wednesday, January 26, 1983.

Rosary was recited Friday at 7:30 and funeral services were held Saturday at 2 p.m., with Francis Monaghan, CSB, University of St. Thomas, officiating. Interment was in Garden of Gethsemani. Survivors include his wife, Hedwig Florian of Tomball, Texas; daughter and sonin-law, Barbara and Turner Moore of.

Texas City; daughter, -Yvonne Florian of Houston; five grandchildren; and brothers, Charlie and Gus Florian, both of Houston, Mike and Bill Florian of Orchard, Texas. Our sincere sympathy to the family of Edward W. Florian.

Thursday night, when you come to play bingo, come early and enjoy a delicious hamburger and French fries prepared by ROZNOVSKY. I wish to thank Bob Allbritton for coming to my aid Saturday night when I was at the lodge. I was ready to leave at 10 p.m., but when I came to my car I noticed my front tire was dangerously low. At first I didn't know what to do, so I took a chance and went back to the Blue Room and asked Bob if he has an air pump (or whatever you call it) and Bob said he did not, but came out with me to look the situation over, and just said: "Go on and drive and I will go with you to the filling station on 18th." But when we got there, no air would filter in the tire and there was only about 12 or 15 pounds in the tire.

Bob said: "Drive slow down to 34th Street, there is a filling station open."

(I was holding my breath all that time); luckily, Bob was able to put enough air in to hold it until morning. He said: "First thing go to your station and have them look at your tire and have it checked."

Believe me, I was there at 8 a.m. and the man took care of it right away and found the valve was leaking.

Everything is all right and, again, I wish to say: "Thank you, Bob Allbritton, for your kindness to the old ladies; by me, you have gained steps closer to heaven. Thank you!"

Dear Members: SPJST Lodge 87 held Their regular meeting Friday evening, January 14, 1983 with President Vlasta Jez presiding.

The meeting was called to order and Flag Bearer Jerry Valchar led the lodge in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. The lodge members remained standing in silent tribute to deceased member, Edwin Shine.

May he rest in eternal peace.

Various reports were given and new and old business was discussed.

The lodge books were audited and reported to be in good shape.

The following new members were accepted into our lodge: Lawrence R. Kneblik, James A. Howell, Sr., Edward Faber, Ima Jean Faber and Donald E. Wolfe, additional insurance. The lodge extends a very warm welcome to these new members.

Ladis and Georgia Navratil and Jerry and Vlasta Valchar were appointed to serve on the Visitation Committee.

The next monthly meeting will be held Friday evening, February 11 at 7 p.m. A chili supper will be served during the social hour; the lodge will furnish the refreshments. I hope to see you then.

Hello to all members and friends of the SPJST! Since the lodge in Pasadena will host the District V spring meeting March 20th, I would like to pass on the information.

There will be a noon meal by Lodge 172 (cost price will be given later in my report) from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. In addition there will be a number of door prizes; such as liquor, wine, etc. I don't have the exact meal participants yet, however, I will also add that in my later report.

The meeting will start at 1:30 p.m. and end at 4 p.m.; dance will start at 4 p.m. and last until 8 p.m. with music by the popular Henry Repka

and Music Kings band; admission will be FREE to members holding dinner tickets or $3 to all not buying dinner tickets. I have had donations of door prizes and I will give the names in my later report.

Our lodge will have sandwiches available after the District V meeting; the bar will be open with a variety of soft drinks, beer, keg beer, etc.

Bebe Hicks is our new youth leader and I would like to ask her to also come to our Executive Board meeting the 4th Wednesday, February 23rd and we would like all our youth members of the lodge contact her about starting up our youth club and getting it in full swing.

The lodge dances are being wellattended and I would like to invite more people, on behalf of the lodge, to attend and socialize for an enjoyable evening. We have plenty of refreshments plus ice, popcorn, nachos and soon will have stoves hooked up and installed so we will be able to serve other foods. I know the economy is bad and let's hope it will improve soon.

A hearty get-well wish to all the people who are sick or under the weather.

We had a nice number of people for our January 22nd dance from our sister lodges and I would like to invite them to come back again. The music was provided by the Heart of Texas Czechs, a real good band that plays variety music.

The dance held January 29th was also well-attended; music that date was furnished by The Legends (country/western style).

Remember, our Lodge 172 Dance Schedule is posted in the Vestnik and on our sign in front of our lodge home.

From Lodge 183 And Dates To Remember!

Dear Members, The lodge was really hopping Saturday night when the Fort Worth German-American and the Mid-Cities German-American clubs had their Annual Fashingsball at the hall. I think it was the largest crowd that has ever been at Lodge 183; it sure kept the SPJST members busy in the kitchen and the bar. With Lambert Pustejovsky, the head cook, serving German sauerkraut and sausage sandwiches with potato salad, helping in the kitchen were Bennie Mae Pustejovsky, Mary Ann Roznovsky, Inez Greenlees, and working the bar were Ray Stracener, Lambert Pustejovsky, Daniel Roznovsky, Bob Betik, and yours truly. It was a busy night and kept everybody working all night.

If you missed this dance you really missed a good time. You men may even had a chance to dance with a real Playboy Bunny, but maybe your wife had something to say about that. There were some great costumes and even one of 183 members won a prize. Good work, Pat Sill, for that Jelly Bean Bag costume, too bad you had to stand up all night.

Remember Saturday, February 12th is the next dance at the lodge hall with music by POLKA PATRIOTS; there will be no cover charge so all you members come on out and bring some friends. Drinks and set-ups are available at the bar so B.Y.O.B. Also remember Sunday, February 13th is meeting day at the hall at 6:30 p.m. All of you members attend the meetings because YOU members are the lodge and, without YOU, at the meetings the officers don't know what YOU would like to have done. Remember when YOU are not at the meetings YOU cannot vote!

If any of you members would like to rent the hall for a party call Lambert Pustejovsky (817) 275-0647 or if you know of a friend that would like to rent the hall, give Lambert a call.

You BINGO players, there is bingo every Tuesday and Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and every Sunday at 2 p.m.

There are a few more names that should have been added to the appreciation awards; Hank Kendall, Kimberly Boyle, Jerry Elleven, Marshall Kuyawa, Richard and Margaret Leshikar, Richard and Eloma Emerick, and we must not forget that Silas Smith trained all of the sales representatives of the lodge and without sales representatives there could not have been a lodge in the first place.

Thanks, again, Brother Silas for a job well done. All of you members support your sales representatives and let's help the lodge grow, and you members with children help Emilie Bailie get the youth movement going, again, because these young people will be running the lodge in the future.

It is always nice to know that someone is reading the articles that you write in newsletters, so I was very happy and surprised when Brother Nick Morris forwarded two letters to me from Bobby Reynolds from Kodiak, Alaska. Bobby wanted to get in touch with Lee Wilder's band that played at our lodge in November. He had read about the band in the Vestnik. I have forwarded the two letters to Mr. Lee Wilder and he called me and said that he was very happy to receive the letters.

Now that the Super Bowl is overwith, everyone can start on new projects, but did you hear about the Barber College that formed a football team? Didn't win a game all season. Seems like every time they got going, somebody'd get a penalty for "clipping".

Karel Havlicek Borovsky, Ennis, Texas Sokol

Dear Brothers and Sisters, February 12th and 13th will mark a very historic occasion in the history of the oldest Sokol unit in Texas. Sokol Karel Havlicek Borovsky will celebrate its 75th anniversary with a weekend of activities.

Saturday, February 12th, a Volleyball Tournament will be held with units of Dallas, Ennis, Ft. Wort h, Houston, and West expected to participate. Games will begin at 9 a.m. Visitors are welcome. Saturday evening there will be a dance beginning at 9 p.m. with music by Jodie Mikula.

Activities Sunday, February 13th, will berm with dinner at 11:30. A t-vmnast ic exhibition will be held at I p.m. A special program has been planned in honor of the anniversary.

A musical prelude will be provided by t he Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra under the direction of Bro. Sid Pokladnik. The orchestra will also provide musical accompaniment for the program. A dance will follow t he exhibition. Music will be provided by the Polka Patriots.

There is no charge for the exhibition and Sunday dance.

FEATURES NEWSBRIEF Clara (Bartek) Hejl, 69, of Rt. 4, Temple, died January 29th in a Temple hospital after a brief illness.

Services were held from the Seaton Brethren Church on Monday morning, January 31st, with burial in the Seaton Cemetery, Sis. Hejl had been retired as a school teacher after having taught in that profession for 41 years in rural Bell County schools. She had also served as youth leader at SPJST Lodge 47 Seaton and also as District Youth Leader of District II (title used at that time). She and her husband, Frank E. Hejl, Jr., have been lifelong active supporters of the SPJST, particularly of the lodge where they belonged, Lodge 47 Seaton. Her husband, Frank had previously served on the SPJST Publication Committee and was a delegate to several conventions. He was also president of Lodge 47 for a number of years. Sis. REUNION Old Adams School Reunion Ex-students of the old Adams country school (south of El Campo) are searching for former teachers who will be guests of honor when the first Adams School Reunion is held Saturday, June 4 at the SPJST Hall in Hillje.

All students who attended the rural school over a span' of two centuries are urged to make plans now to enjoy the homecoming festivities which includes a catered meal (Staff Catering), music by the Happy Home Boys, a slide show of school days pictures, and "lots of reminiscing about the good old days."

HOST FAMILIES SOUGHT FOR INTERNATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS 1. Host Families are being sought for 25 high school students from Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Colombia, Brazil, Canada and Japan for the school year 1983-84, in a program sponsored by the American Intercultural Student Exchange (AISE).

The students, age 15 through 17, will arrive in the United States in August 1983, attend the local high school, and return to their home country in late June 1984. The students, all fluent in English, have been screened by their school representatives in their home countries and have spending money and medical insurance.

2. AISE is also seeking American high school students age 15 through 17, who would like to spend a high school year in Sweden, Norway, Finland, Germany, Spain or France, or participate in a five week host family stay in Sweden, Norway, Finland, Spain or Colombia.

Host Families with small children are welcome to participate in this program. Host Families may deduct $50 per month for Income Tax purposes.

LONGHORN RECREATION LABORATORY TO THOSE CONCERNED: In the recent meeting of the DYCs, the President, and the State Youth Director, it was

recommended'that we seek approval to send persons to the Longhorn Recreation Laboratory in Brownwood this spring. This matter was presented and approved in the recent Supreme Lodge meeting.

Consequently, we will send the DYCs, assistant DYCs, youth leaders or assistant youth leaders to attend the week-long (not just weekend) laboratory for the period March 13th-18th (Monday through Friday). The Supreme Lodge will pay tuition and mileage as in the past. The number of people attending from the SPJST will be limited to a total of ten, so if we have a number applying to go, a representative cross-section will be selected from this office. If you are interested in attending, please send us your name and a statement no later than Monday, February 28th, to the effect that you will stay for the duration of the laboratory. We will then mail in your tuition, which includes all meals while there, from this office. If we do not hear from you by that date, we will be unable to forward your tuition and if you then decide to go you will have to pay your own tuition which is $100 per person. As we have additional information on the laboratory, we will inform those going and they will be sent detailed information on the agenda (topics) that will be covered. ***

STATEWIDE YOUTH LEADERS' RETREAT Another recommendation was that we hold this year's Statewide Youth Leaders' Retreat at Camp Val Verde May 14th and 15th for all DYCs, assistant DYCs, youth leaders and assistants, including spouses. The training would begin Saturday morning and last through Sunday noon. It is expected that some of those desiring to attend will want to arrive sometime Friday evening or Friday night in order to be ready for the training Saturday morning. This recommendation was approved by the Supreme Lodge.

The Supreme Lodge will pay for the leasing of Camp Val Verde for that period, all meals, and mileage for one car from each lodge. This will probably require some arrangements on car pooling so that we do not have to pay mileage to every individual coming by automobile. As in the case of Longhorn, we are asking that you come prepared to stay for the duration of the training from Saturday morning through Sunday noon. No remuneration for mileage will be paid for those who do not stay for the entire training period. I think the reason for this is obvious. If you do have to go back home Saturday night, we ask that you return again Sunday morning with mileage reimbursement for only one round trip.

We hope you will be making plans to attend this Youth Leaders' Retreat because there' is much valuable information to be gained pertaining to all facets of our youth program. If you plan to attend, please send us your name, lodge numbee the total number of persons coming with you, and a statement to the effect that you will be present for the entire training session. For purposes of finalizing lodging and meal arrangements, we are asking

that you notify us no later than Monday, May 9th.

ii.■■■••• From the District Youth Counselors SKATING PARTY FOR DISTRICT II The spring skating party for District II will be held Sunday, February 20, 1983 at Skate Haven in Temple, starting at 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Skate Haven is just North of Temple High School on North 31st Street.

Prizes will be given to all youth club members plus any youth who belong to the SPJST are invited and they may bring a friend. Please ask your friend to join your club. We are looking forward to seeing a large turnout; the youth will again get to meet their camp friends from the other lodges.

District II spring meeting is also just around the corner which will be held March 27, 1983 at Lodge 29 in Taylor. The details have not yet been worked up but, remember, that date and watch for details of the meeting in the Vestnik in a week or so.

We, the Resolution Committee of the Novy Tabor SPJST Lodge No. 17 at Caldwell, Texas, in behalf of our membership, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed brother MELVIN ALBRECHT, who died December 5, 1982 in the Burleson County Hospital following a lengthy illness.

Brother Albrecht was born October 22, 1922 in Burleson County, the son of Emil and Mollie Krueger Albrecht. He lived in Burleson County and Caldwell most of his life. He was employed with A&M University, a feed mill operator in the swine center for 9 years. He was employed by Nagel Wire Corp. since 1979.

He was married to Lillie Mae Neimann October 4, 1952 in Brenham, Texas. He was a member of the Elizabeth Lutheran Church and a member of SPJST Lodge No. 17 in New Tabor.

Funeral services were held December 7 in the Elizabeth Lutheran Chapel with the pastor, Rev. William Hill, officiating. Interment was in the Masonic Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Lillie Mae Albrecht of Caldwell; one son, John Melvin Albrecht; daughters, Mrs. Genevia Ann Flippin and Cindy Gale Albrecht of Caldwell, Mrs. Pamela Marie Forman of Bryan; four grandchildren; and brothers, Walter Albrecht and Alton Albrecht, both of Caldwell. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Albrecht, his parents and one brother.

Sympathy to the loved ones and, to our beloved brother, we wish eternal rest and may his memory be honored unto eternity.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of the Novy Tabor SPJST Lodge No. 17 at Caldwell, Texas, in behalf of our membership, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed brother VALENTINE KRENEK, who passed away suddenly Sunday morning, December 23, 1982 at his home.

Brother Krenek was born October 31, 1907 at Waller, Texas, the son of Joseph and Josephine Maruna Krenek. At the age of six, he moved to Chriesman, Texas with his family.

Brother Krenek was married to Veronica McRea, February 8, 1932, in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Caldwell, Texas. He and his wife lived in the Deanville community where he did farming and worked

for the Southern Pacific Railroad for seventeen years. He also worked for the Caldwell High School for about thirteen years.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the SPJST Lodge No. 17 of New Tabor and RVOS of Deanville.

Funeral mass was held December 26 in St. Mary's Catholic Church with Rev. Emilian Foltyn, officiating. Interment was in St. Mary's Catholic Church cemetery. A Christian Wake Service was held in Phillips-Luckey Chapel preceding the mass.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Veronica Krenek of Caldwell; four sons, Hubert Krenek of Bryan, William Krenek of Detroit, Mich., Daniel Krenek of Austin and Thomas Krenek of Deer Park; one daughter, Mrs. Edward (Dorothy) Matus of Caldwell; 10 grandchildren; six brothers and three sisters.

Brother Hlavaty had been a resident of the Sherwood Health Care Center in Bryan since 1979.

Prior to this he had lived in Caldwell for 37 years. He was a farmer and when he moved into Caldwell he worked for Seibert Store, Stoval and Novosad Motor Company, Harvey Motor Company and Henry Valigura Exxon Service Station.

He was a member of the Caldwell Brethren Church and of this lodge.

He was married to Matilda Hejl November 20, 1927.

Funeral services were held Monday, January 3 in the PhillipsLuckey Chapel with the Rev. Albert Michalik and Rev. Henry E. Beseda officiating. Interment was in the New Tabor Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Matilda Hlavaty of Caldwell; one son, Edwin Hlavaty and daughter-inlaw, Suzie of Bryan; two daughters, Mrs. Hubert (Joyce) Haisler of Caldwell and Mrs. Raymond (Irene) Marek of Cocoa, Florida; four grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren and three sisters, Rosalie Pechal of Temple, Christine Vavra of Bryan and Agnes Piwonka of Fort Worth.

Sister Morris was born October 30, 1895. She was married in 1912 to Alfonse Morris, who died in 1968.

Sister Morris became a member of the SPJST in April of 1916.

Survivors include a son, George Morris of Fort Worth; a daughter, Martha Sandig of Mart; a brother, August Picha of Riesel; two grandchildren; and four greatgrandchildren.

May her soul rest in eternal peace.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of Stefanik Lodge No. 142 in Houston, wish to express our sincere sympathy, in behalf of the entire membership, to the bereaved family of our departed sister ROSALE (LOLA) SOPCJAK, 83, who entered into rest and now is safe in the arms of Jesus.

She was a resident of Houston for 50 years before she passed away January 21, 1983 in a local hospital.

Rosary was recited Sunday at 7 p.m. in the Heights Funeral Chapel and funeral services were held Monday at 9 a.m. from the Heights Funeral Chapel and graveside services and interment were held at 2 p.m. at the National Cemetery, East Bernard, under the direction of Heights Funeral Home, Houston.

Pallbearers were August Vrazel, Henry Linhart, Herman Kusy, Johnny Linhart, Henry Linhart, Jr., and Butch Stein.

Survivors include a son, Edwin Sopcjak of Lafayette, Louisiana; daughters, Lillie Mae Whorton of Houston, Gertrude Stehle of Montgomery, Alabama and Dorothy Nolkamper of La Grange, Texas; brother, Frank Vrazel of Columbus, Texas; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

May she rest in peace; we have lost a dear and sweet member.

Emergency Measures 1. Keep the door closed.

SAFETY OF REFRIGERATED AND FROZEN FOODS AFTER POWER FAILURE

If flood water has entered your freezer or refrigerator, throw away all food not sealed in metal cans.

If power has been interrupted or the refrigerator or freezer is not working properly, keep the door closed as much as possible to keep cold air inside. This will help prevent food from spoiling or thawing.

2. If possible, move food to a locker plant. To move food safely, wrap'it in newspapers or blankets, or place it in insulated containers, such as camping coolers.

3. If you cannot take food to a locker plant, leave it in your freezer and cover freezer with blankets, quilts or crumpled newspapers.

4. If dry ice is available, allow 21/2 to 3Oounds per cubic foot of freezer space. Twentyfive pounds of dry ice should keep the food in a half-full 18-cubic-foot freezer frozen for 2 to 3 days. Wear gloves when handling dry ice to prevent burns. In a chest-type freezer, place boards or heavy cardboard on top f4 the packages and place the dry ice on top of the boards. Place the dry ice on each shelf of an upright freezer.

2. Vegetables.

3. Meat and poultry. Thawed meat or poultry may be unsafe. Examine each package. If odor is poor or questionable, throw the food out. Discard commercially stuffed poultry. Cook immediately any thawed but unspoiled meat or poultry. After thorough cooking, this meat can be refrozen.

4. Fish and shellfish are extremely perishable. Do not refreeze unless ice crystals remain. This food may be spoiled even if it has no bad odor.

5. Ice cream. Do not use any melted ice cream.

Cured meats such as ham or bacon will be safe to eat, even after several days without refrigeration.

2. Eggs can be kept several days in a cool place without refrigeration, depending on the freshness of the eggs.

3. Hard cheese will usually keep well at room temperatures. Other cheeses, such as cream cheese, opened containers of cheese spreads and cottage cheese spoil quickly.

4. Milk spoils quickly without refrigeration. Do not use any milk with a sour smell or taste.

5. Custards, creamed foods or any foods containing mayonnaise spoil quickly and are likely growing places for organisms causing botulism poisoning. Throw out any of these foods if they have been warmed to room temperature. Spoilage often cannot be detected as there may be no bad odor or taste.

6 When in doubt about any food - throw it out.

They may be found in or around homes, barns, outbuildings, driftwood, levees, dikes, dams, stalled automobiles,'Piles of debris, building materials, trash or any type of rubble or shelter.

3. Keep a heavy stick or some other weapon handy.

4. Before beginning any clean-up or rescue operations, search the premises thoroughly for snakes. They may be under or near any type of protective cover.

5 In rescue or dean-up operations, wear heavy, leather or rubber high-topped boots and heavy gloves. Wear trouser legs outside boots. Be extremely careful around debris. Use rakes, pry bars or other long-handled tools when removing debris. Never expose your hands, feet or other parts of your body in a place where a snake might be.

6. After dark, carry a strong light.

7. Explain to children the dangers of snakes under storm or flood conditions and the precautions they should follow. Do not allow children to play around debris.

8. If you kill a poisonous snake, use a stick, rake or other long-handled tool to carry the snake away for disposal. Snakes may bite even after they appear dead.

9. If you realize you are near a snake, avoid any sudden movement which may cause the snake to strike. If you remain still, the snake may leave. If the snake does not move away from you after a few minutes, slowly back away from it.

10. If someone is bitten by a poisonous snake, call a doctor immediately.

Controlling Snakes

One of the most crucial human needs is a supply of safe water. Every person in your family needs at least 2 quarts of water or other liquids daily (more in hot weather). You also need pure water for preparing food, brushing teeth and keeping clean.

Ice cubes and other water stored in your refrigerator are sources of safe water. Soft

To get rid of snakes in buildings and to prevent others from entering: 1. Remove snakes' food supply. Eliminating rats and mice from an area discourages snakes.

2. Remove snakes' hiding places. Get rid of lumber piles, trash piles, high weeds and grasses and debris.

3. Block openings where snakes might enter buildings. Snakes can pass through ex tremely small openings and usually enter near or below ground level. Be sure doors, windows and screens fit tightly. Search walls and floors for holes or crevices. Inspect the masonry of foundations, fireplaces and chimneys; plug or cement cracks. Plug spaces around pipes that go through outside walls. Fasten galvanized screen over drains, ventilators or large areas of loose construction.

Close a valve on the main water line to the housc before actual flooding occur:soon as possible.

To use the water still in the pipes. turn on the faucet located in the highest point in the house. This lets air into the system. Then draw water from the lowest faucet in the house.

Your hot water heater or water pressure tank could supply many gallons of safe water in an emergency. Before using water from the water heater. switch off the gas or electricity that heats the water. Leaving the heating part on while the heater is empty could cause an explosion or burn out the elements. After turning off the gas or electricity. open the drain valve at the bottom of the tank. Do not turn the water heater on again until the water system is back in normal service.

3. Clean mud, dirt and silt from switches, sockets and boxes with .water and a soft-

bristled brush. Check for damage.

4. Allow electrical wires and connectors to dry completely. This may take days depending on how wet the system is and whether heat is available.

5. Use extreme caution in cleaning mud and dirt from the main entrance box. Because the power line enters here, this is the most hazardous. part of the electrical system to' . work on. Assume the power line is hot even if a test light shows power is off. Never hose out this switchbox. Wear rubber gloves and rubber-soled shoes. Do not touch anything wet or stand in water while working on the box. Stand on dry wood plank.

In an emergency, pull the electrical meter from its base to d isconnect the power.

Notify the electric company that you broke the seal.

Check the System for Electrical Shorts 1. While standing on a dry board or ladder and wearing rubber gloves and rubbersoled shoes, check the main switch box to be sure all fuses are removed.

2. Close the main switch and look for sparks or smoking wires at the main switch box.

These indicate shorted switch connections. If you see evidence of such shorts, carefully try to correct the problem. You may need a new main switch.

3. If the main switch is in working order, open the switch and insert a fuse in one branch circuit.

4. Close the switch to check for shorts in that branch circuit.

5. If the fuse does not blow immediately, wait at least 15 minutes to check for slower electrical leaks. Carefully inspect all parts of the branch circuit you are checking. If thre are any signs of sparks, smoking or heating, if the 'fuse blows or the circuit breaker trips, remove all fuses and open the main switch. You may need to do additional cleaning or drying, or you may need to replace circuit parts.

6. Repeat steps 2 to 5 for each of the other circuits, one at a ;ime.

7. After you have checked all the circuits and found them in good condition, once again remove all fUses and open the main switch. Push wires and electrical receptacles, switches and light outlets back into junction boxes. Replace covers. Then, check each branch circuit again, one at a time, by replacing one fuse at a time and closing the main switch.

8. If everything is okay, close the main switch.

9. For 24 hours be careful when using receptacles and switches. There may be slow leaks which could cause shocks. Do not plug in electrical appliances that have been flooded until they have been reconditioned.

10. If some circuits are faulty, use only the undamaged circuits. Do not overload undamaged circuits with too many lights or appliances until normal capacity is .restored.

Some newer homes may have a ground fault circuit interruption system with their circuit breakers. This probably will need to be replaced.

RESTORING \ ELECTRICAL SERVICE

Caution. Wear rubber gloves and rubber-soled boots for all work with electrical circuits.

Rubber is an insulator and will help protect you from shocks.

Observe Health Precautions 1. Use only safe or purified water for cooking.

Boil for 10 minutes.

2. If you are without refrigeration, open only enough food for one meal. Some foods can be kept a short time without refrigeration. Cooked vegetables, meat and meat dishes can be kept unrefrigerated from noon until the evening meal. Do not keep these dishes overnight without refrigeration.

Do not serve foods that spoil easily, such as ground meats, creamed foods, hash, custards, meat pies and any food containing mayonnaise. These are potential sources of botulism poisoning.

3. If necessary, substitute canned and powdered milk for fresh milk. Canned milk will keep safely for a few hours after you open the can. If you are using canned milk to feed a baby, however, open a fresh can for each bottle. Use only boiled or disinfected water to mix powdered milk. Use powdered milk immediately after it is mixed.

If safe water or water disinfecting material is not available, use canned or bottled fruit juices instead of water.

4. Prepare and eat foods in their original containers, if possible. This will help if dishwashing facilities are limited.

After a storm, your electrical system should be thoroughly checked and repaired by an electrician. Do your own repairing only if such service is unavailable and you are experienced enough. Proceed as follows:

Conserve Fuel 1. Consider the amount of cooking time needed for particular foods. If you have limited heat for cooking, choose foods that cook quickly. Prepare casseroles and onedish meals, or serve no-cook foods.

2. Alternative cooking methods include: a. Fireplace. Many foods can be skewered, gritted or wrapped in foil and cooked in the fireplace. b. Electric utensils. If gas is cut off but you still have electricity, use electric skillets, hot plates or coffee makers to heat food. c. Candle warmers and other devices such as fondue pots may be used if no other heat sources are available. Use safety precautions with these devices.

Never use fuel-burning camp stoves or charcoal burners inside your home, even in a fireplace. Fumes from these stoves can be deadly.

Unless flooding was light and there is no danger of bacterial contamination from floodwater, avoid using fruits and vegetables that were ready for harvest at the time of flooding unless they can be disinfected, peeled and thoroughly cooked. Some fruits and vegetables are more susceptible than others to bacterial contamination.

1. Leafy vegetables, such as lettuce, cabbage, mustard, kale, collards, spinach, swiss chard and celery, and fleshy vegetables and berry fruits such as tomatoes, summer squash, strawberries and peppers would be highly susceptible to bacterial contamination. Silt and other contaminants might be imbedded in the leaves, petioles, stems or other natural openings of fleshy structures and could be difficult to remove.

2. Root,. bulb and tuber crops such as beets, carrots, radishes, turnips, onions and potatoes would be less susceptible to bacterial contamination. Disinfect these vegetables, peel and cook them thoroughly before eating.

3. Produce with a protected fruit or impervious outer skin, such as peas, melons, eggplant, sweet corn or winter squash, should be washed and disinfected before the outer shell, skin or husk is removed.

Then shell, peel, or husk the produce, and cook it if possible.

Sometimes it is as "dekuju". Dekuji is more proper and is more often used. Plural is "dekujeme". It is not necessary to add an equivalent of "you", but it could be done and it is often done.

Then, it is "clekuji ti" when we are close to the person addressed, or, "dekuji Vain" if the relation to the person addressed is more formal.

The most common reply to the word "dekuji" is the word "prosfm".

"Radd se stalo" and "neni zae" is used similar to "I was glad to do it", or "don't mention it", in this country. dovolte (prosfm)—with your permission, (please) pardon me, (please) odpust'te (prosfm) —excuse me, (please) prominte (prosim)—I am sorry—pardon me nic se nestalo—it was nothing The word "prosfm" is the most common courtesy word. The original is, "I beg you" and only from the context can you tell whether the word ‘prosfm' means "I beg you" or whether it serves as "please".

The words, "odpusfte" and "promitite" mean practically the same. The informal address would be "promifi and odpust" to be used only with those persons with whom you are on a "thou" basis. The "thou" and "you" basis sounds archaic in English, but there is an important difference in the relation between persons whom we address "thou" — in Czech "ty" — (the verb "tykati si"), and persons, we address "you" — in Czech "vy" — and, therefore, the verb describing the relation is "vykati si".

The English "I am sorry" in Czech means "Je mi lfto". The Czech phrase is used in the same sense as the original meaning of "I am sorry", but generally, we can say that "Je mi -lito" is used much more sparingly than "I am sorry". The latter can often be translated "odpust'te" or "promirite".
