Local Couple Makes A Huge Donation To Lodge 74, Lovelady After the editorial written by Brother Rudy Sefcik about Lodge 74 and complimenting our top sales representative, Brother Chester Smoldas, there's not much left to say about him as a sales representative, except all of us at Lodge 74 are real proud of Chester.

However, there is something left to say about Chester and Mildred Shmoldas's dedication and support to our home lodge in Lovelady. (As shown in the picture) Chester and Mildred Shmoldas are presenting President Wilcox a check in the amount of $1,200 which President Wilcox is accepting on behalf of Lodge 74 for the purchase of a new riding lawnmower; this is just one of the many things that Chester does.

His additional activities include serving as chairman for the Grounds Committee because the weather never gets too hot or cold for him to mow or pick up litter from the premises. He is always available to help you with your insurance or any of the other many jobs that need to be done, Chester is always on hand.

SPJST Scholarship Fund Receives $500 Donation This past week the SPJST received a $500 donation from Slavonic Mutual Fire Insurance Association (S.V.P.S.) Chapter No. 30, Corpus Christi, Tx. S.V.P.S. No. 30 has approximately two hundred members in the Corpus Christi area.

Betty Jurica, the secretary of this Chapter made the motion to donate to the fund and the idea met with immediate approval of the members in attendance at their recent meeting. The response to the SPJST Scholarship Fund has been outstanding. Donations from lodges, chapters and individuals have been very generous and will be used to help talented young people further their education.

Millions of our young people, who are emerging from high schools, colleges and universities, are thinking of their future — whether in terms of the ultimate or merely wondering: "What comes next?"

They will receive a great deal of advice but none more valuable than that from a once-penniless, immigrant boy, from a foreign country, who had become one of the most dynamic leaders of the motion picture industry.

The foreigner's advice was: Every individual must follow his own road of achievement. The important thing is no luck, wealth, accidents of birth, or superior education, is necessary to travel that road well. From personal experience, he had learned that one can always do better. You have a chance to make your life today brighter than yesterday's and tomorrow's brighter than today's.

Each individual should not be interested in past successes but only in future opportunities.

You, no doubt, wish to know the name of this penniless immigrant; his name: Samuel Goldwyn. *** An executive from an out-of-state college once revealed the following story: When he was ten years old, he started to walk to -a county activity a good distance from his father's farm, on a blistering fall day. Halfway, he sat under a tree, ready to give up; some man then came along and asked him if he needed a ride.

After they arrived at the entrance gate, the young man climbed out of the automobile and thanked the stranger; he added that some day he would do something in return for the man. The stranger replied "More than likely, you cannot because you may never meet me again; however, if you think I have done you a favor, I suggest you pass it along to someone else."

The young man never forgot that statement; as he grew older, he began to think of acts of kindness, while things were loaned — not given to him; these things were to be passed.on. „

Have you ever been in an automobile accident when several people, you never saw before, rushed to your aid? Perhaps you were stranded or took the wrong road, and strangers helped you. At any rate, these unknown strangers touched your life at this point.

A kind word or an expression of appreciation, often from a total stranger, heartens most individuals.

Chances are slim in that we never see that person again. The only way we can pay back the debt is to pass the kindness along. A kind act is like money — it is made for circulation.

PASS IT ON! *** Usually, the strength of any fraternal society can be measured accurately by checking the caliber of those who support it. Age is a state of mind; those who are able to strike a balance between the old and the new, taking from each those things which have the best opportunities, are usually the true leaders.

Frankly speaking, leadership is a precious commodity which is more precious than silver and gold, and it is more beautiful to behold than diamonds, for it shines more brilliantly. It also has a warmth and a glow unmatched by any of these.

We have been very fortunate in having had so many leaders to whom we looked for guidance throughout our lifetime. Many of them are now old in years, and some have gone to their eternal rest. Those who are still among us are still young at heart. The list of past officers of our local lodges could be summed up in "Who's Who of the SPJST" and their loyalty to the good cause of brotherhood.

The younger individuals, who are presently assuming places in leadership, will be eternally indebted to those men and women of vision who have charted the way for them and for others. ***

While speaking of leadership, a thoughtful gesture was planned and staged at Lodge 183 Mid-Cities, in Arlington, a few weeks ago. Its lodge honored their past officers and dedicated working members who maintained interest for the continued progress and growth of its affiliation.

In this issue, Brother Norman Kneschk has a report on the event held January 22nd, and regrettably, the editor and his spouse were unable to attend due to another commitment; however, we appreciated the lodge's invitation.

All members of Lodge 183 should be commended for the faithful services and concern displayed within their four years of existence.

They accomplished numerous goals by having weekly activities, holding their regular meetings, making charitable contributions, as well as donating monetary gifts to several needy and worthwhile organizations; such as the latest ones which were $500 to each S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home (in Taylor and Needville).

Hallettsville Lodge Appoints Committees Dear Members: Our Lodge No. 4 met Sunday, January 9, 1983 in the Grant Building, with lodge President Frank Zabransky presiding.

The youth club led the members in the Pledge to the flag.

A resolution of sympathy was read for our departed Brother Louis E. Rehak by Gaye Galetka.

Assistant Youth Leader Gaynelle Chudej reported on the activities.

Reports were also given by Treasurer Helen Zabransky and Financial Secretary Hilmer Galetka.

Dear Members: The next meeting of Lodge Karel Jonas will be the first Sunday in February, the 6th. It will start at the winter time of 2 p.m. On the agenda, besides the monthly reports and business needing attention, will be some special reports; also, it is the hope of the Audit Committee that their report will be ready in time for the meeting. After the meeting the "Clan will gather".

The January meeting, the second Sunday, (the 9th), started on the chiming of 2 p.m. The minutes of the December meeting were accepted after one correction. All other reports were accepted as given. A progress report on the window repairs was given. An estimated time of completion was given as the approximate middle of the month or a few days after, the weather being the prime factor. Several motions were made and passed regarding money appropriations and their handling. A list of members, making 7 or more meetings, per year, in the years 1981 and 1982, was placed on the black board. This allowed everyone to see how they stand on the attendance roll. If a name did not appear, the member made less than 7 meetings in either or both years.

Sister Cecelia Valigura won the door prize. She, in turn, donated it to the kitchen fund.

Enjoyment was shared by all who stayed for the social. Sisters Sabrsula, Sperlik, Haverda, Schank, Brdecka, Foytik, Luquette and Nezval brought enough to fill the table. The lodge furnished some of the sandwiches and liquid refreshments.

On a sad note, it was learned that a former member of the youth club passed away December 27th. She was Karen Marie Buxkemper who would have been 18 January 18th.

Death was due to natural causes.

Dear Vestnik Readers, The monthly meeting of the El Campo-Hillje Lodge No. 40 was held Wednesday, January 19, 1983.

Due to rain and cold weather the attendance was small. Hope we have a larger attendance in the future so President James Kulcak won't get discouraged. We were glad to see all the officers present and ready to work.

After the reading of the minutes of the November meeting by Secretary Linda Rubesh, it was brought to the attention of the membership that the minutes needed to be revised in order for all members to be eligible to vote. All members including those of 62t and

Milly Elzner and I, being on the Cheer Committee for this month, paid a visit to Agnes Bollom at her home and had a nice visit over a cup of coffee. Agnes is under a doctor's care but doing very well.

We then went to Spohn Hospital where we saw Frank C. Sacky and Mary Ramirez. Brother Frank is recuperating from surgery at this time. When we saw him he was in very good spirits. Sister Ramirez was having tests run and was happy to announce all tame out, well. f 1,, )1

4/V g STNili — Wednesday, February 2, 1983 We learned that Joe Fey had been released from the hospital just the day before; also, Brother John Stasa is recuperating at home after his release from the hospital and doing well I'm told.

Sister Agnes Elzner Bren has also been under the weather lately but is still in real good spirits.

I'm sure all of these members would appreciate a visit from their friends and we hope all are up and about real soon.

Our next meeting will be Wednesday, February 9th; there will also be a dance at SPJST Lodge 79 and Sokol Hall, Saturday, February 5th with the Leo Majek Orchestra playing so let's all come out and have a good time.

Holds Installation of Officers

Here we are in a brand new year of 1983. I hope the resolutions you made for the new year are not broken. I think if we all would abide by those resolutions that we make at the start of a new year, this world would really be a nice place to live in. Any way let's all try to do our best in 1983.

We, at Lodge 80, held our meeting Sunday, January 9th which was called to order at 2:15 p.m. by President Bohac.

After the Pledge of Allegiance the first order of business was to install the officers for Lodge 80 who were elected for 1983.

Honorary President Joe Barabas, Jr. of Lodge 80 had the honor to install the following officers: President — DJ. Bohac, Vice President-Terry Bertrand, Secretary/Treasurer-Glen Latham, Financial Secretary-Glenda Liles, and Reporter Joe Barabas, Jr. After the installation ceremonies, the president and vice president appointed various committees for the bar, kitchen, entertainment and building.

Secretary Glen Latham gave a good report financially for our lodge at the meeting for the past year 1982.

Our lodge president brought up a good suggestion for the members.

His idea was that a box or basket be set up at the podium and the members would be asked to write questions or ideas, and drop them in the box or basket which would be read at the meeting; some come on members, let's give it a try.

On the sick list at the time of our meeting, we had Felix Beels, Billy Latham and Arbie Bermer. They were all sent get well cards by our Financial Secretary Glenda Liles. At this writing they are all back from the hospital doing well.

Door prize winners were D. I. Bohac, Isabella Kunz, John Barabas and Ligie Ivicic.

The meeting adjourned at 3:30 p.m. and a happy hour followed with a delicious meal served to all present.

Lodge No. 88, Houston Lodge Pokrok No. 88 held its monthly meeting January 17, 1983.

This was the first meeting under the new schedule under which meetings are to be held the 3rd Monday of the month rather than the 2nd Monday.

The meeting began promptly at 7:30 p.m. Following the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag, led by Flag Bearer Vincent Hegwood, Secretary Marceil Malak read the list of deceased members since the prior meeting. President Larry Pflughaupt introduced the officers and committee members who have been elected and/or appointed to serve for the coming year.

Two members were elected to serve on the Remunerations Committee, namely Mickey Rice and Amos Kadlecek.

Secretary Malak read the minutes of the previous meeting and they were approved.

The various committees reported financial information for December as well as annual.

The Board of Trustees report, given by Chairman Royal Warnasch, contained such information of activities as: (a) Donations to Harris County Emergency Corp, (b) approval to sponsor a Little League team, (c) approval of dance schedules, and (d) repairs to equipment. The Board announced its decision to hold no Clean-up Day this year, but, instead, to assign a room or area to each committee to maintain during the cntire year.

Brother 1 r,Ink Pajestka, Sr., a faithful worker, was appointed kitchen chairman.

Recognition was given to Financial Secretary Josephine Pflughaupt for her diligent efforts in connection with the rental of the lodge facilities, resulting in a significant increase in rental income. Past President Mildred Holeman was given credit, along with the entire Board of Trustees, for the increase in interest income as a result of the changes in the lodge's investments.

District V Director Louis Hanus named the lucky winners from District V of the Bandera trip District V President Tillie Helmcamp reported that the Spring meeting date was changed to March 20, to be held at Lodge 172 in Pasadena.

Guide Helen Hegwood reported 145 members present. Happy Birthday was sung for all those who have birthday in January. Door prize winners were Estelle Kelly, Bill Vornsand, Mary Anders and Jerry Ermis. Refreshments were furnished after the meeting by the Joe Paul Wright Insurance Agency.

The meeting was adjourned at approximately 9:20 p.m.

I would like to call to your attention that an English Play called "Abbey Answers An Ad" is planned for May 22nd. Rehearsals are underway. Please keep that date open so you will be free to enjoy this comedy to be presented by the Hlohol Dramatic Club. More details will be available soon.

Saturday, January 22nd, I had the pleasure to be invited by Sister Tillie Helmcamp, president of District V, to enjoy a delicious lunch in company with youth leaders and officers of Lodges 88, 142 and 172 in her lovely home.

Present were president of Lodge 142 Mary Ann Kieschnick, (she also serves as youth leader for her lodge) and she was accompanied by her Assistant Youth Leader Henrietta Veselka, President of Lodge 88 Larry Pflughaupt with spouse, Dorothy, District V Director Louis Hanus, District V Youth Counselor Joyce Mynar and husband, Malcolm, and her Assistant Betty Dobesh, newly-elected youth leader of Lodge 88 Linda Wehring, also Dan and Margie Berry of Lodge 172.

Sister Tillie Helmcamp called this group for the sole purpose of finding a solution to build the youth program for 1983. A very lively discussion took place with various ideas on how to alert parents of our youth in District V, to take part in the activities and enjoy the generous awards offered by our Supreme Lodge. It is unbelievable that, out of 18 lodges in District V, only three Lodges 88, 142 and 172 sponsor youth clubs.

During the meeting ideas were exchanged and, finally, agreed, to contact parents with children by mail and individually invite the children and parents, requesting a reply on the enclosed card by a certain date. There is no expense involved only few minutes of time to fill in the lines and mail the card back as soon as possible.

According to the decision made in the meeting, the planned day will be a fun-day and "JUST FOR YOU" children and parents. Much is done and offered to the participating youth by our Supreme Lodge and the youth are not taking advantage of it and are losing out on many worthwhile activities.

Again, I wish to call your attention to the letter you will receive very soon in your mail; don't just lay it aside, read it carefully and answer promptly because, IT IS FOR YOU! Susan Schenburn will be going to the TEXAS STUDENTS' NURSES ASSOCIATION CONVENTION to be held in Fort Worth February 23 through 27. Susan was elected as a delegate from her nursing class of San Jacinto College. Susan is a hardworking girl and the four days of leisure certainly will be enjoyed by her. Have a good time.

Besides going to the convention, her mother, Mary Schenburn, is taking her to Walt Disney World in Florida for three days to really have fun, this is her graduation present when she completes her RN Training in August of this year. Her mother was lucky to win this trip for two through a promotional company; both are looking forward to August 1983.

The Czech classes on Mondays, conducted by Professor William Souchek, have a large attendance of 40 enthusiastic students from age 12 to ?? and they are all eager to learn; this pleases the professor to no end.

The classes are from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

President Albert Kubala and John Murphy, along with our wives were privileged to be guests of Lodge No. 183, Mid-Cities at their first annual awards banquet held January 22nd.

Everyone enjoyed a delicious Italian dinner and dancing after the program.

We were glad to hear Brothers Carl Zich and Al Svacek are both out of hospitals and doing fine.

Please mark your calendars for the youth-sponsored dance February 12th, with music by Bill Kucera.

Antonio Lodge Holds Monthly Meeting

Lodge 133, San Antonio held their regular monthly meeting January 16, 1983, with 42 members present.

All officers were on deck and many interesting subjects were discussed. There is nothing that makes a meeting more interesting than when members will speak up on items that are good for the organization.

In the past year our attendance at our regular meetings has increased and we hope that the year 1983 will be even better. Members who have been attending our meetings have enjoyed the true fraternalism that exists in our lodge, and we want to extend our most welcome to all other members to come to the meetings and see for yourself what you are missing.

Lodge 133 will be planning our organizational party in the February meeting. The party will be held in March. This is always a special occasion, remembering our charter

Well, how are all of you through. out our beautiful Texas, especially in Houston, Pasadena and surrounding areas?

Thank God, the weather here in our pelt of South Texas is nice and warm with comfortable tempera. ture, not as it was in West and Northwest Texas.

Seems like sickness is everywhere, as usual, it comes from across our countryside or cities. My dear sister Marie Ann Hanzelka is at home now, doing fine, our friend James Baines is at home doing very well and is in good shape, also our brother-in-law, Ellmo Braune, of my dear wife, Esther Mikeska, is home and his own time is a serious one without hope.

It is no new news to many of us to see our older members enjoying themselves as if nothing happened before who seemed to be enjoying life better than the younger ones.

The older ones are happy to come among us to enjoy life during their retirement at Lodge 172; and to the others who haven't been at our lodge yet, make an effort to join in the fun and be happy to belong to a highly-honored and respected fraternal organization known as the SPJST in Texas. By joining our fraternal order, you will be proud that you are in such a fine society composed of good family-type people in our beautiful State of Texas.

Probably by now you may know that, we at Lodge 172, are ready for you and yours because we have sales

representatives all over our baby "dome", known as Rozkvet Lodge 172.

Saturday, January 22nd we were entertained by our delightful musicians known as the H.O.T. (Heart of Texas) Czechs from Round Rock who played wonderful music to our gracious members and guests.

We are looking forward to having this band come back again, which everyone really enjoyed these fine talented musicians.

We, at Lodge 172, have several new bands or orchestras scheduled for your entertainment in 1983, so don't forget to pick up our year's dance schedules and we are also going to have reservations later on for you.

Going back to our January 22nd dance, we had good things going at our lodge when a group of fine Polka Club dancers showed up for their rehearsal for some real old-time dancing which started one hour before our regular dance, it was a big gathering even John and Esther Mikeska joined in because we, too, belong to a good old Polka Club of Texas. The teachers of the dance club at the Saturday's rehearsal were four good Minnesota persons teaching different types of old-time dancing which we loved and enjoyed very much. During this dance everyone seemed to have a wonderful time dancing on the 80 by 90 oak dance floor which is slick as glass. At this dance Brother Joseph Herbie Kimmons celebrated his 34th birthday and, for enjoyment, a young lady danced some Greek exotic numbers to the birthday celebrant. We wish him the very best and many more in the future. God bless you, Herbie!

On the same day (January 22nd) our gracious and good members, Brother Joseph and Sister Vlasta Machann's daughter Donna got married in the Czech-Moravian Church at 7:30 p.m., and the Mikeska family was invited but we missed the occasion; we apologize for not being present, so sorry. But thanks for the invitation. God bless the fine young couple and may they have much happiness.

Sunday morning we are going to Corpus Christi with friends Eddie and Marie Pazderny in their big comfortable motorhome to a homecoming at the Moravian Hall of the Pazderny Estate. We hope to have fun and enjoy eating the Czech homemade barbecue, sausage, chicken and beef brisket with all the trimmings plus dancing to a real Czech old-time music that we like.

January is almost over as of this weekend, our February is looking in and March is in hopes as February has only 28 days and March is looking over its shoulders to keep on moving fast. In our cities the days are much shorter than in our country days, everyone worked for a little or nothing and the days seemed two in one. Now, in the cities most of us punch clocks before and after working hours which still leaves enough time for an evening of enjoyment, and doing good deeds for others, so why don't you all help others and in due course your time and good deeds will show up what you have done for others.

To those who are sick in homes or hospitals, we wish all of them a speedy recovery and much happiness. Also to those who have it

gone to their resting place, we wish them eternal peace and we love them.

of Annual Awards Dinner At Lodge 183 Report

Dear Members: Saturday, January 22nd, Lodge 183 of Mid-Cities had its first annual awards dinner and dance which was a huge success.

The lodge was honored to have our SL President Nick Morris attending our-dinner, along with his lovely wife, Dorothy and their son, Michael, also our District III Director Sid Pokladnik with his lovely wife, Justine, and there were some members from Lodge 130 in Dallas, some from Lodge 92 in Fort Worth and some from Lodge 154 also in Fort Worth. We welcomed them and hope they will be able to come to more of our activities in the future. We welcomed all of the visitors who attended the dance following the dinner.

Our new President Phill Boyle presented the awards for the founders of lodge who bought bonds and started the lodge on the road to success. They were Claud and Rose Breakenridge, Robert and Pat Sill, B. J. and Betty Hlavaty, Daniel and Mary Ann Roznovsky, Albert and Inez Greenlees, Rozetta Tary and yours truly, Norman Kneschk.

Thanks to all of them because without their help the lodge could not have had accomplished all of the things that they have done so far, and have a home where we can have dances and socials.

B. J. Hlavaty gave out the awards for the many people who worked so hard to keep the lodge activities going since the doors were opened.

They are Ray and Martha Stracener, Daniel and Mary Ann Roznovsky, Lambert and Bennie Mae Pustejovsky, Thomas Pustejovsky, Bernadette Pustejovsky, Jeanie Roznos, Inez Greenlees, Edd Karl, Tony Sanchez, Walter Parsons, and yours truly, Norman Kneschk; all received a nice round of applause from the members and friends for their work that they did over the past four years that the lodge has been struggling. If I have missed anyone who I should have named I will include them in my next newsletter.

There have been a lot of good times in the past and the lodge is now well on its way to better and bigger things in the future.

President Phill Boyle introduced our new youth leader to the Supreme Lodge officers and to all of those present and told us that the lodge will be sponsoring a soccer team in Arlington this year. This will not be a Lodge 183 team this year because the youth club is not organized well enough yet, but all of you members who have children who love to play soccer, get together and have them enrolled in Lodge 183's Youth Club and next year we will have a Lodge 183 soccer team playing in Arlington. These young people will be the ones who run the lodge in the future.

6/VESTNIK — Wednesday, February 2, 1983 president's award. B. J. was the first president of Lodge 183 and has served four years and he received a standing ovation from the members and friends present.

Honored also was one of the Arlington's police officers, Hank Wilson, for outstanding work in the City of Arlington, Texas.

We must not forget the two checks that the lodge gave to our District III Director Sid Pokladnik for $500 each to be sent to each of our S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes, one to the home in Taylor and the other one to the home in Needville. The members know that this money will be put to good use in these two homes.

I cannot forget the good meal that was prepared by Shane Boyle and Marge Freeman. The lasagne, spaghetti and meat sauce, salad, and rolls were very good and everyone had plenty to eat and seemed to enjoy it very much. Thanks, again, for your hard work in preparing the meal.

The lodge is also grateful for all of the help that members of the Star House gave and for volunteering to work the bar and serving the meal so all of the members of Lodge 183 could sit down to enjoy the meal and program without anyone having to work. The Star House is one of the charity projects of Lodge 183 and, in return, they are always willing to help when we need help. Many thanks, again! The lodge's project this year is buying them a new van that they can use in their good work in rehabilitating alcoholics and drug addicts.

Last, but not least, the SHAMROCKS (country/western) band was a very good band and kept the crowd moving all night. We hope the lodge will be able to hire them, again, in the near future for more of the same good music.

There will be pictures as soon as they are developed; hope we get some good ones.

If this letter sounds a little mixed up you can blame it on love, most of you members are doing it, already.

88 Houston Birthday Club News Lodge

President Pearl Hanka called the first meeting of this year to order at 11:20 a.m. Wednesday, January 12, 1982.

Sister Rosalee Kostom, secretary, read the minutes from the December, 1982 meeting, and they were approved as read.

Treasurer's report was read by Sister Lillie Spies who gave the yearly report and the December report, which was a good report. We all hope that the 1983 year will be a better one than 1982.

Sunshine Reporter Sister Mary Kosut gave her report from December and she sent get-well cards to: Sisters Rosalee Kostom, Elsie Talcott, Albina Drawe, Leddie Kadera and Brothers Miroslav Bily, Fred Lero and Tim Kostom (who is in the Diagnostic Hospital, hoping to be home in a few days). February 6th will be Anniversary Day at Lodge 88 and the Birthday Club Sisters will have the pastry table again, so let's all bring our goodies.

Ladies' Circle, Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth Dear Members and Friends: We had a beautiful day for our meeting. We do hope it will continue for the next two weeks as our Annual Southwestern Exposition and Fat Stock Show plus the rodeo with all the famous bronco riders and followers will be in town. The scheduled events from Wednesday, January 26 through Sunday, February 6th is very-crowded according to the list in our Fort Worth Star Telegram. We hope some of you will be able to attend.

However, I must warn you that, as a general rule, our weather regardless of the time set, early or late in the winter, just seems to wait for The Stock Show to come to town to turn real cold.

Our Ladies Circle meeting opened with Mary Powers, president, presiding, Vice-President Hermina Cihacek, filling in again as treasurer for Mary Ann Krivanek and Clara Marchioni, secretary.

Clara Marchioni read a Thank You card from S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home for money sent for Christmas. Lillie McMillen read Thank You cards from Esta Belle Hubenak and family on .the passing of Mr. Alex Bunker and one from Sunshine Easley.

Maggie Konecny was appointed the new hostess chairman for the coming year.

The door prize, donated by Mary Powers, was won by Marie Prill.

Flora Koci will donate the door prize for the next meeting.

Esta Belle Hubenak announced that the Youth Club will have a Valentine Dance, February 12, 1983.

Czech Mates will play from 9 until 1 a.m.

Mary Powers expressed her appreciation to all committees and to members for all the work done during the past year by them.

Happy Birthday was sung to Julia Dueser, Mary Hubenak, Bennie Hundle, Anna Langer and Mary Powers.

Several families went on trips during the Christmas holidays.

Some of them were Ernie and Julia Dueser who went to Charlottesville, Virginia for a three weeks visit with their son, Dr. Raymond D. Dueser.

Catherine Smith visited in California and Flora Koci, Mary Palachek, Inez Krivanek and Brenda Lackey went with Adams Tours to Natchitoches, Louisiana to see the Christmas Lights Festival.

Bennie Bartek was operated on at Boulevard Hospital but we are happy to hear that she is home now and doing nicely. Carl Zich is also home from All Saints Hospital, and we hope he will soon be able to be up and around again.

We hope that Mary Hubenak will soon be able to return from Saint Joseph's Hospital where she has been very ill. We also heard that Dona Hubenak will go into the Johnson Memorial Hospital in Cleburne, Texas for an operation this week. We also heard that Mary Pavey's sister, Mickey Ban, is in the hospital in St. Louis, Missouri for an operation. We hope they will all be able to come home soon.

Our next meeting will be February 8, 1983 if the weather permits. Bring a covered dish and have fun.

Dear Editor and Readers: I wish to let you know that December 19, 1982 I attended and enjoyed the Christmas Party performed in the SPJST and Sokol Hall.

December 25th, I attended a Christmas Party in the home of my dear son, Johnny Stasa, and his lovely wife, Elsie. The attendance consisted of persons from age one to 92 years. It was interesting to observe those who are just learning how to walk and talk.

December 29th, my dear daughter, Lillie Huber from Austin, arrived to celebrate my 92nd birthday with us, December 31st.

We planned to attend the New Year's Eve Dance, December 31st in the SPJST-Sokol Hall with music by Majek's Orchestra. This plan was changed unexpectedly when my health condition had fallen in a few days.

Monday, January 3, 1983, the family's doctor since 1955, D. C. Bernwanger, was notified at 2 p.m. and my dear daughters, Lillie and Olga took me to the Memorial Medical Central Hospital at 3 p.m. where X-rays were made and my sickness was pneumonia. Later there were more medications and more X-rays taken. Two times a day I was under oxygen to make my lungs clear and breath easier. My roommate was a middle-sized Mexican; his weight was 105 pounds

and he coughed all the time when he wasn't asleep. Breakfast was served at 7:15 a.m., lunch at 11:45 a.m. and dinner at 4:45 p.m. The food and service were satisfactory, nursing was also good. My Room No. was 814-A. The best time for sleeping was from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. I stayed there from January 3rd through January 17th.

My dear son Johnny, and his dear wife, Elsie, took me to my lovely home. Olga opened the door for us. It was a great pleasure to be back at home, with better health.

While I was in the hospital Olga and Ann became ill. Olga with the flu and Ann had the shingles. The doctor's prescriptions are valuable; both are now recovered.

My sincere thanks to all who had telephoned me, also on radio, and in letters expressed their personal friendly wishes. Also thanks to my dear children who took care of my lovely home until I was released from the hospital and was at my home. I received a phone call from my dear friend and active fraternalist, Brother Frank C. Sacky, that he is the Spohn Hospital. My sincere wishes for you are to be well again and be back again at your home, soon.

New-sbriefs Emilie Rosa Junek, 76, died in a Rosenberg nursing home on Monday, January 24th. Services were held from the Rosenberg Brethren Church, with interment in the Seaton National Cemetery east of Temple. She and her husband John are former residents of the Seaton community where he was financial secretary at Lodge 47, Seaton in the late 40s and early 50s.

Two of her brothers are Frank and Emil HO, both of East Bell County.

Her sisters are Della (Henry) Mares and Lillie Mikulas, mother of Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas, Jr. Sis. Junek and her husband retained their membership at Lodge 47, Seaton. —NAM ***

Dorothy Oltman, 53, died as a result of a one-car accident in the Warrenton area late Sunday, January 23rd. Funeral services were on Thursday, January 27th, from St. John's Lutheran Church in Warrenton, with interment following in the Florida Chapel Cemetery east of Warrenton. Sis. Oltman was the financial secretary of Lodge 179, Warrenton, having served in that capacity since that lodge was organized on 3 September 1975. She also represented her lodge as a delegate in the 1980 convention.

Current news out of Czechoslovakia is very scarce in our news media. A recent article in Time is revealing and might be of interest to some of our members-readers. It is written by Time's Bonn Correspondent John Moody as he recently travelled through that country. It appears on pages 34 and 39 of the issue of January 10, 1983.

The cover design remains unchanged, except for the notation at the top: PORTIONS REVISED JANUARY 1983, so that if you do not have a Rule Book with this notation at the top, you do not have the latest version. The changes incorporated in the latest edition encompass all those changes recommended and approved in the January Supreme Lodge meeting.

After you receive your copy, please discard all other and previous copies of the Rule Book to avoid confusion.

We plan to make these new Rule Books available to you at your District Training Classes and at the Statewide Youth Leaders' Retreat at Camp Val Verde. (See below). If, however, you feel that you need these books before then, please make your request to SYD Ja,nn Wilson here at the Home Office. It goes without saying that after you receive your copy, please read it carefully for the changes. These changes appear on the inside of the cover, pages 1, 9, 10, and the addition of a new page 10-a.

From the State Youth Director THE GOAL OF 100+ IS REACHED! Dear Readers: Earlier this youth year we had set a goal of 100 + for our Vestnik projects. I am very pleased to say we have reached that goal with our December project! A total of 126 youth from 26 lodges participated in this project. This is the largest response to a Vestnik project since the activity began in June of 1982.

Many youth leaders have worked with their youth clubs so that their youth club members could earn additional points. Also many parents have taken the time and interest to see that their youngsters take part in this monthly activity.

With this type of interest and encouragement shown our youth it not only boosts their morale but gives them the initiative to make that extra effort of getting involved.

Besides that, we feel it enhances their knowledge of the SPJST. The following is a list of youth who participated in the December project, the amount of points earned, and the names of the youth leaders. While reading this list ask yourself, "Why isn't my name there?" Your name can be there in the next Vestnik project if you will only take the time to have some fun, learn more of the Czech heritage and earn additional points, all at the same time.

Dear Youth Club Members: The following is a story of actual facts of how the SPJST began. Read it and answer the following questions and earn additional points.

On December 28, 1896, 25 CzechTexans gathered in the court house in La Grange in Fayette County for the purpose of establishing a separate and new fraternal benefit insurance society. The only public notice about this meeting appeared in "Svoboda," one of the few, if not only, Czech publications of that day and time, and published by Augustin Haidusek, who was also a great backer of the idea. The minutes taken at this first meeting were written in the usual brief and concise style of J.R. Kubena, who was later to become secretary of the new society and serve in that capacity for 40 years. The minutes read as follows: "On December 28, 1896, 25 Czechoslovaks met in La Grange, Texas, for the purpose of organizing a new benevolent society in the State of Texas. After some discussion, a 3-member committee was elected to draw up a set of bylaws for the new organization. The committee elected consisted of J. R. Kubena, A. Haidusek, and F. Cihal.

Mr. Haidusek later gave up the job and L. V. Vanek was named to this committee. The committee drew up a set of by-laws and called for a convention of delegates from all lodges interested in joining the new organization to meet in La Grange on June 20, 1897."

In March of 1897, the Supreme Lodge of the CSPS in Cleveland, Ohio, was notified of the action taken, and being taken, by the Texas lodges.

The first convention was held in La Grange, as planned, on June 20, 1897. Delegates present represented 22 lodges (Although Lodges No. 23, 24 and 25 were not represented at this first convention, they did join the Order by July 1st, and they are considered charter lodges of the SPJST).

The first convention was opened

by Engelbert Pollach of the New Tabor lodge. As first permanent chairman, they elected I. J. Gallia, and J. R. Kubena as secretary. Jan Michal was elected vice chairman.

One of the first items discussed was that July 1st of that year (1897) be agreed upon as the date the new organization started doing business.

An effort to make it July 15th was defeated.

In electing officers of the main lodge (Supreme Lodge) the first convention elected I. J. Gallia as the first president for the next two years, Fred Breska as vice-president and J. R. Kubena as secretarytreasurer. Jan Michal, Josef Kopecky, Josef Hodanek and Frank Dusek were elected to the auditing

committee. The only paid officer was the secretary-treasurer whose salary was set at $300.00 per year; his bond at $1,000.00. A motion to hold open meetings was defeated.

I. J. Gallia, J. R. Kubena, and L. V. Vanek were designated to draw up a charter for the new organization.

Here it is interesting to note, for the first time, the appearance of the name of the new organization "Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas" — (SPJST) — Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas. It appears as Article I of the charter drawn up by these three men. Who actually thought up the name is not known, and there is no written record as to just how the name was conceived.

The charter was drawn up and submitted to then Secretary of State J. W. Madden on July 10, 1897. It was approved by him on August 12, 1897.

It should also be noted that July 1st, 1897, the membership in the new SPJST consisted of 507 men and 375 women, a total of 882 charter members. The idea of a separate and independent Texasbased fraternal order had really caught fire and most Texas Czechs were eager to join.

15. The by-law committee thought of the name Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas (SPJST) for the organization.

Isms■o■Now DIME BOX LODGE 13 YOUTH CLUB NEWS Dear Members, We held our last monthly meeting January 16, 1983. The meeting was called to order by President Pam Spitzenberger.

Trudy Krenek led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Secretary Penny Spitzenberger called the roll and there were nineteen members present.

The secretary's minutes were read and they were accepted as read.

Marlene Iselt gave the treasurer's report which was also accepted as read.

All the members of Lodge No. 13 would like to welcome Marlene Strong as our new youth leader. We discussed the District I meeting, which will be held at New Tabor April 24th and YAD will be in Caldwell June 26th.

We have gotten together ten members of our youth club to perform a Beseda dance; they are: Tami Krenek, Penny Spitzenberger, Pam Spitzenberger, Sharla Nimtz, Dougie Abshire, Robert Spacek, Greg Schumann, Russell Spacek and alternates are: Marlene Iselt, and Keith Spitzenberger. Our practice will be February 13, for the dance.

We will have a Valentine Party at our February meeting. Everyone is to make a Valentine, there will be prizes for the prettiest, and the most original Valentine.

For the surprise at the meeting, Marlene Strong had threw boys to dress up as ladies. The winner was Dougie Abshire, 1st; 2nd place went to Robert Spacek and 3rd went to Russell Spacek. It was a lot of fun and laughs.

Dear Vestnik Readers, Our first youth club meeting for Lodge 79 was held January 14, 1983 at 7:30 p.m. It was called to order by Youth Leader Mrs. Kay Majek.

ALVIN MELNAR, 61, a resident of Houston for 40 years, who passed away December 15, 1982.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, December 17, with Father Rodney Poythress officiating. Interment was in Woodlawn Garden of Memories in Houston.

A parish rosary was recited Thursday, December 16 at 7:30 p.m., followed by a rosary by Knights of Columbus Council 2917 at 8 p.m. in Woodlawn Chapel of Memories in Houston.

Brother Melnar was a member of the St. Theresa Catholic Church in Houston, the Knights of Columbus Council No. 2917, the Men's Club of St. Theresa, past president of District V, and past president and chairman of the board of SPJST Lodge No. 142.

Survivors include his wife, Lillie Melnar of Houston; two daughters, Lillie M. James and Pamela Petrucha, both of Houston; a son, Roy Gene Melnar of Houston; five sisters, Mrs. Oscar (Elsie) Dusek of Hallettsville, Mrs. Elo (Evelyn) Sklar of Hallettsville, Mrs. Freddie (Stella) Blaha of Hallettsville, Mrs. Wallace (Irene) Vornsand of Schulenburg and Lucy Melnar of Houston; a half-sister, Mrs. Emanuel (Hermina) Vasek of Hallettsville; a brother, Albert Melnar of Sealy; and three grandchildren, Roy Gene Melnar, Jr., Chad James and Crystal Petrucha, all of Houston.

Pallbearers were Sidon Tumis, Henry Hermis, Sr., Henry Linhart, Eric Stein, Denny Vornsand and Leonard Sklar.

Bro. Brtis was born in Buckholts April 6, 1904, he was the son of the late Stephen and Karoline Brtis.

April 10, 1904 he was baptized into the Buckholts Brethren Church.

September 5, 1934 he was united in marriage to Hilda Kuzel; they lived and farmed in the Seaton Community until 1938, then moving to Buckholts to reside for 44 years to the time of his death in the Corinth Community.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 11, 1982 at Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home with Rev. Ernest Helsey officiating. He was laid to rest in the Corinth Cemetery near his home.

Survivors are his wife, Hilda Brtis of Buckholts; two daughters, Mary Irene Brtis of Denton, Marguerite Brtis of Dallas; two sons-in-law, Brantley M. Weatherford of Denton, Peter Vogel of Dallas; grandson John Paul Brtis Vogel; two brothers, Steve Brtis of Buckholts and Bill Brtis of Temple, four sisters, Teresa Hyer of Buckholts, Mildred Brtis of Cameron, Mary Schweihs of San Antonio and Minnie Hlavaty of Vernon.

FRANK JOSEPH KASMIR, age 76, of Beasley, Texas, who was born May 13, 1906 in Hallettsville,

Texas, the son of Frank and Veronica (Bitala) Kasmir. Mr. Frank J. Kasmir was a retired farmer, a member of Friedens United Church of Christ in Beasley, Texas and also a devoted member of Lodge Karel Jonas No. 28, East Bernard, Texas.

Mr. Frank J. Kasmir passed away in the Villa Nursing Home of Bay City, December 16, 1982.

Services were conducted by Peter Nichols of Friedens United Church of Christ of Beasley at the Garmany and Carden Chapel, Rosenberg December 18, 1892 at 2 p.m. Burial was in the Greenlawn Memorial Park, Rosenberg.

He is survived by his wife, Sophie; two daughters, Billye Faye Harlan and Shirley Raye Holub, both of Beasley; four brothers, John Kasmir of Freeport, Leonard Kasmir of Needville, Jerry Kasmir of East Bernard, and Peter Kasmir of San Antonio; two sisters, Mary Vangler, Edna and Emilie Boone, Beasley; five grandchildren and one greatgrandchild. Two sisters preceded him in death, Lillie Pribyl and Julia Ondras. Also his parents, Frank and Veronica (Bitala) Kasmir.

Richard Joe Milburn was born November 14, 1909, in Giddings and was the son of Richard and Mary Elizabeth (Durrenberger) Milburn.

September 22, 1935, Brother Joe was united in marriage to Miss Albina Ovcarik at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Dime Box. Bro. Joe was an active member of our lodge for forty-seven years, having attended the monthly meeting Sunday, December 17, a day prior to his death.

For 25 years, Bro. Milburn managed the Dime Box Mutual Lumber Company, was the Precinct No. 1 Justice of Peace for 13 years and also continued to operate his farm.

Funeral services for Bro. Milburn were held Wednesday, December 22, at 2:30 p.m. at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church of Dime Box with Father Isidore Rozycki officiating.

Burial was at the St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Albina Milburn; two sons, Clifton of

Cloudcraft, New Mexico, and Don of Dime Box; one daughter, Joyce Hoffman of Cedar Creek; and six grandchildren; also, eight sisters and two brothers survive his passing.

Brother Beck was the son of Frank and Mary (Kubos) Beck, born 30 September 1908 at High Hill, Texas. He and Gertrude Schwegmann were married 25 November 1935 in Weimar. He spent his entire life in this area and was a member of the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, and a faithful member of our SPJST Lodge No. 19. He was a retired truck driver who resided at 1122 Baumgarten Street in Schulenburg.

Survivors include his wife, Gertrude Beck; a daughter, Mrs. Billy J. (Dorothy) Doehring of South Houston; a son, Charles F. Beck of Ventura, California; two brothers, August Beck of Schulenburg and Frank Beck of Houston; and four grandchildren.

Brother Mazoch was born 24 May 1907 in Weimar, the son of the late Jim and Helena Mazoch. September 22, 1930, he and Martha T. Schrader were united in marriage at High Hill, Texas.

He was a member of the St. Rose Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was a retired city worker.

Brother Mazoch was also a member of SPJST Lodge No. 67 and served as treasurer of the lodge at the time of his death.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Mazoch; a son, James V. Mazoch of San Antonio; a brother, Laddie W. Mazoch of Weimar; and a grandson, Stephen Mazoch of San Antonio.

Sister Milberger was boin in the Steep Hollow community but later moved to the Wheelock area where she resided the remainder of her life. She had been a member of SPJST Lodge No. 94 since 1921.

Survivors include two sons, Raymond Milberger and James Milberger, both of Wheelock; a brother, John R. Scasta of Wheelock; a sister, Mrs. Vlasta Blazek of Bryan; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

He was an Army veteran of World War I. Brother Pomykal was married to Lydia Hejl in 1940 in Hillsboro.

Adams School Reunion Old

Ex-students of the old Adams country school (south of El Campo) are searching for former teachers who will be guests of honor when the first Adams School Reunion is held Saturday, June 4 at the SPJST Hall in Hillje.

By Anne Keegan Chicago Tribune CHICAGO—Time magazine has made its choice. It has ordained its hero of the year.

The hero has no heart and no soul, no muscles, sinews and bone like mortal men. It gets no bouts of depression to slow it up, no surges of hope to spur it on. It suffers no losses and wins no victories. It feels no pain and makes no decisions.

It is never torn between right and wrong. It never gets hungry and never grows tired. It cannot love and never cries. It isn't afraid of death or of growing old. It is simply a machine that, when not broken down, does what it was built to do.

This hero — this Man of the Year — is a computer.

Time magazine has made its choice. I have made mine.

The cold of last autumn had just set in, early morning frost glazing the front yard grass, when I first heard of him.

"Early this morning, over by the L, there was a man bending down picking up old tin cans," said a boy in the neighborhood. "He was putting them in two bags -- he had a bag on each end of a long pole, and he carried the pole over his shoulder like you see in pictures of Vietnam. I just thought you'd like to know."

"He must be poor," I said, "to be out so early picking up tin cans to sell. You've got to respect that man — he's out there working, even if it is for pennies."

"You sure do," the boy said, "because that man doesn't have any hands."

Throughout the fall, as the weather got colder, the kids in the neighborhood would see him over near the Ravenswood elevated train platform picking up other people's discards from the night before. He'd obviously been up for hours. By 7:30 a.m. his two bags were already beginning to bulge. He was a small Oriental man wearing an old parka with no hands protruding from the sleeves.

I often wondered about him, but whenever I looked, he was not there.

I was sitting on my front steps with my family Christmas morning, when we saw a figure coming along the street. There was no one on the sidewalks at the moment except this small man, bent forward under the weight of two bags he was carrying.

He was moving swiftly, as if there were work to be done.

He crossed the street and started to head west. "Merry Christmas," one of us shouted. The man stopped and looked at us but did not smile as if he understood.

My husband went over and tried to talk to him in English. Then in French. The man could barely understand either. He was from Laos, he said. He lived two blocks up the street. And his hands? How*did he lose them? "Communists" was all he could say.

On orders, my son came out of the house with a basket of fruit giftwrapped in yellow cellophane. He opened one of the bags filled high inside with empty cans and put the basket in. The man bowed his head in gratitude and since there was nothing more he could say to us in English, began to slowly walk back to his mar-fling's work.

I did not see him again until the first day of the new year. The streets were quiet, the sidewalks empty, the houses dark that early in the morning. But outside my kitchen window, trotting along my back alley, came this little man, busy at work.

When he passed the house, I waved. I think he looked up and saw me, but he could not wave back. He moved on down the alley and disappeared.

I found out his name later. It is Kom Vongphachahn. He is 44. He is indeed from Laos. He lost his hands 21 years ago when he was a young soldier with the Laotian army. The hands, and parts of his chest, were blown away by a communist landmine. An American doctor treated him after he was wounded, and somehow the man has learned to use his arms to do just about 'anything he needs to.

He can eat, drink and dress himself. He can smoke a cigarette using his arms. He taught himself how to do it all, with no rehabilitation training and no prostheses. He did it by himself, in the jungle.

He now manages quite well in picking up the aluminum cans, which is not surprising. For in 1979, without any hands, he swam across the Mekong River to escape to freedom. He sat in a refugee camp in Thailand for three years. His family — his wife, his daughter, her husband and their two babies — crossed the Mekong by boat after him. Before they ever got the chance to come to America, his daughter died. She woke up one morning in the camp with a headache. Two days later she was dead.

He and his wife now help care for their two grandchildren. They live in a third-floor rear apartment not far from me. Every morning he trots out of his building at 6:30 a.m. to begin collecting cans. He walks 23 miles a day to find them. He thinks that's a pretty good deal.

He has been in this country only three months. He cannot speak English yet, but he is trying. He has no hands, but he is working. He is poor. His life is simple. He is far from famous. But he is doing the best he can right now.

Like all of us, he has a heart and a soul. He's very much made of muscle and sinew and bone. He is mortal. He has been slowed by depression. But hope has always spurred him on. He has suffered terrible losses. But he also has tasted victory.

He's felt pain, gone hungry, grown tired. He's been faced with death, fought a war, lost his hands, left his country, found freedom but knows he is growing older. He cries, he laughs and he loves. He is struggling. He is human.

Time magazine has made its choice for hero of the year. It is a machine.

"Dobry den" has replaced also quite a few overly polite greetings such as "poklona, ma tict a, rukulfbam, etc." Good riddance. *** "Doha', rano" is used more in the country, while "dobre jitro" is more common in the cities. "Dobre jitro" is becoming more and more common.

Since "jitro" is a poetic word and not otherwise commonly used, you may run across an abbreviation "dobrytro", which is strictly colloquial.

"Sbohem" has a religious origin.

Literal translation is "with God" and traces apparently to the phrase "Jdi (or ,Wte) s Bohm". "Jdi" is singular, while "Jdete" is plural imperative (meaning "Go with God").

The religious meaning has been slowly lost in the common usage, therefore, it is written now as one word, "sbohem", instead of Bohm".

The religious meaning has been largely preserved with the longer form of the same greeting "s Panem Bohem", and, therefore, it is usually written as three separate words with capital letters. Literal translation would he "with Lord God." Occasionally, you may see it written as one word, "spanem bohem".

Dobry ‘Wer" and "dobrou sere", is used similarly as in- this country. The same is true of "na shledanou". ***

"Nazdar" was made popular by the

Sokols, and in this country it was regarded as a special Sokol greeting.

This is no longer so. "Nazdar" is very common, and no longer connected with Sokol use exclusively. When you meet someone who is older or whom you do not know closely, then the greeting of "dobry den" would come to your lips, while a close friend or contemporary you would greet with "nazdar". From the point of an English-speaking person, the usage of "nazdar" is peculiar in the sense that it could and actually is commonly used, not only when meeting a person like the American "hello", but also in parting, instead of "na shledanou" or `sbohem".

Apparently, some insurance companies assume bigness will be the key to their survival.

In our opinion, that's a faulty assumption.

Witness the dinosaur. Being big didn't save him. In fact, it probably hastened his demise.

For the dinosaur grew too large for his limited brain. As a result, signals took too long to get from one part of the body to another. In the end, he simply couldn't respond quickly enough to change.

The real issue — then and now — is flexibility. Adapting to a changing, often confusing, environment..
